New Kit Is Cesc-y & Quick Transfer Fixes

The new home kit has been unveiled and the much-suggested retro look has emerged into the sunshine. Emminently better than the Charlton copy that we has been foisted upon us for the past couple of seasons. Now to get the blue back into the trim on the away kit. Theo Walcott had some positive words about the environmentally-friendly (shame about the carbon footprint in getting the kits around the world, eh lads) outfit:

The colours are very traditional, it feels nice and it’s made from recycled plastic bottles so what more can you ask for?

Think how much money could have been saved if the sponsors were Coca-Cola. No point reprocessing the lids of the bottles, just get them glued together. I suppose a less facetious answer to Walcott’s question would be to have the Premier League trophy hoisted by the Arsenal captain next May with the team having put The Invincibles to shame?

Arsene was surprised by how impatient England were at the World Cup. It should have come as no surprise since he must be used to it with Arsenal supporters by now. We are all guilty to varying degrees; I want the manager to sign his new players before pre-season training, just on the off-chance that the month together before the new season starts actually proves beneficial.

However, if it means waiting to sign the right players so be it. Surely it is better to get the right player than simply fill a hole in the squad? This summer’s market is slowed by the World Cup but it craves our indulgences, able to watch for a match at least those whom we read about all of the time. That most have flunked their auditions is neither here nor there, the scouting will have been done long before now and (hopefully) not be based on a poor night’s work on international duty.

It is an impatience that is fed and watered by the media. With Manchester City flashing the cash, their desires for movement in the transfer market are being sated but the closing stages of the World Cup means the charge for action has begun. Laurent Koscielny’s deal is expected to be announced – and may have been so declared by the time you read this – today with others needed.

Continued involvement in South Africa allows stories about Ozil to Barcelona and Mertesacker to continue unabated in the absence of anything to contrary emerging from the players or Arsenal. Ozil’s arrival in Barcelona is imminent (English media) or next year (Catalan media) highlights their financial priorites.

Cesc has been speaking in vaguely direct terms that look to have been crafted by Vieira and Henry before him:

I haven’t said that I will definitely leave Arsenal. Everything is possible. Now I have my head and my focus on the World Cup. I am very pride to be captain of Arsenal and I love the club and have respect for them. It gave me such pride to be made captain.

Unsurprisingly that little gem did not make the Barcelona media outlets this morning since it does not fit in with Guardiola’s apparent desire to have Cesc iron his shirts and sort out his dry-cleaning whilst he waits for his opportunity. It offers a ray of hope that should brighten the days for a while. Until Rosell opens his mouth and spouts the same claptrap his predecessor did but in a more polite and respectful way.

The reasons for the possible departure of Eduardo – shurely shome mishtake in talk of Villa, Stoke, Bolton or Birmingham, although the Croat may feel that if he plays for them none will kick him – with Wenger reportedly about to ‘do battle‘ over Eduardo, the Portuguese national team goalkeeper. Can’t have two players with the same name can we now?

Of course that is all tosh and piffle since Mark Schwarzer is joining as the new Number 1 and is to be tempted by a coaching role at Arsenal. Apparently this is the deal-clincher which is somewhat baffling as at the end of a long career, this would be his pinnacle. Joe Cole meanwhile is AC Milan bound for £3m a year which will see off Arsenal and any other English suitors. Except it seems to be about £30k per week less than the reported salary offered by English suitors…

’til Tomorrow.

  1. first.. sorry I always have nothing to add 😦

  2. Well, technically you were second as there was a spam trackback which got caught.

So a B- this morning with big red writing across your work saying, Must do better

    😎

  3. It may just be wishful thinking but I’ve been wondering for a few weeks now if Cesc actually wants a move to Barca this summer. His lack of a statement to the effect of “bugger off I not moving” might be down to a fear of a backlash form Barca, whom he no doubt wants to join one day. He might be happy to stay for another season (or 2!) and let the media and Barca fans believe it was all Arsenal’s fault he couldn’t leave.

  4. 1 loose cannon

So Barcelona fancy someone else now. according to rumours the new kid on the block Ozil is on their list and Fabregas has confirmed that he has never said he definitely wants to leave and still loves Arsenal. We told him we love him more and he will finally realise that. I just hope the rubbish that has gone on from the Catalans does not affect his form.
Arsenal fans will be paying £45 for 8 plastic bottles, and they have to wear them too. I like the new shirt very simple traditional look and made up of recycled bottles.

  5. would like to see one announcement per working day for the next 4 days with new signings, the goalkeeper one c/half, as the other is in a still at world cup for germany…..

let eduardo go he will never be the same whilst with us
assume wenger has a signing up his sleve we will not expect, nut has anyone noticed the “linked with us” part on official website has gone quiet recently!!!!!!!!

  6. Eduardo needs to go for his own good. He’s going to have a tough time with Arsene’s emphasis on height and power at the forward position. If we can get 5-7M for him, that’d be decent return. Hopefully to less physical league…

  7. I hope Eduardo stays, in a 4-3-3 we could do with the options up top.

Eduardo (like someone said yesterday) did setup a few goals playing there dribbling in from the left, although he can also do the business if playing alongside Bendtner or Chamakh in a 4-4-2. His finishing as we all know is top notch if he gets his confidence back.

I think Arshavin could be deployed on either wing, or even centrally at times next season, leaving a shot for Eduardo and Vela to get some first team action down the left or as a left striker so to speak in our 4-3-3. Vela is one I can’t wait to see get a proper run in the team. Along with the re-emergence of Ramsey, Djourou, and progress of Wilshire in a bit part role throughout the season.

I just hope our French players come back with some confidence!! Suppose its a good thing we didn’t have any English players at the World Cup too. 🙂

  8. Chris

Just thought I’d pop in and say, “Hi, Hugs and What about Robin van Persie, who seems to have been omitted from your calculations?

    YW

  9. Sol would have done us a bigger favour if he had occasionally stopped the opposition from scoring.

  10. YW

No need for me to state Robin.. he is our main striker. Was simply going over other options for when hes injured (as always!!) .

I just think Eduardo could be used next season, especially alongside another striker, even Robin YW! Van Persie is the complete package, and suits our 4-3-3 perfectly. Just makes you wonder with having Bendtner and Chamakh, will we stick to 4-3-3 all the time if Van Persie is absent, or even when certain strikers are not getting enough action…

I cannot see Bendtner and Chamakh taking a bench role for much of the season if RvP stays fit for the whole campaign. Bendtner’s advantage is he can be used on the right. With what I have seen of Chamakh he looks like a very direct CF, we will have to wait and see, but it does look like he will play second choice initially to RvP if it stays 4-3-3, as we have Arshavin who is most likely a certain starter on the left, and Walcott/Nasri/Bendtner on the right.

  11. @ YW

I like the new kit…but I also really like the red-and-white one. Sorry.

    @ Lagoner
“I don’t think Sol did us a favour. I do think there were equal rewards on both sides, and that’s why I can understand him signing somewhere else for two years instead of with us for one.”
I don’t think you understood. I did say him being available when we needed an experienced CB was serendipity!
The reason that I think he owes us is because he let us down in the past and AW not only didn’t hold it against him, but also gave him the chance to resurrect his career. He’s only getting these other offers now because he had playing time with us. I expect he’d get quite a lot of playing time at Arsenal, but he probably wants to be first choice and to get two years guaranteed. And good luck to him.
But it would be nice if all players were like DB10.

    @ G4E
Rosicky? Eduardo? Huh? Can you explain what you meant? I don’t see the connection with Sol’s situation.

  12. I thought £3m per annum (57.6k per wk) was quite low for Cole unless it’s tax free which will make it £115k gross for English clubs.

Anyone know who good is that Eduardo guy for his club, he’s been excellent for Portugal but I don’t trust tournament performances.

  13. YW – Just want to acknowledge your action re that lowlife Goonerpower.
Kenyan Gunner – Being anti-racist is one thing, wanting to censor bloggers who are willing to speak their minds is another. The two are not mutually exclusive.

  14. wengerball

If anyone offered him 115k a week they gotta be seriously stupid. I won’t put it past Spurs actually.

If Arsenal even offered him more than 60k I would be dissapointed.

  15. Wengerball

I suspect the tax regime makes it almost as financially attractive but it is not going to be tax-free. We shall see.

Personally, I would rather see another centre back in – let’s take Koscielny as read for all intents and purposes – and another goalkeeper.

    YW

  16. Chris

The £60k is a basic wage but he’ll be offered something akin to the Sol deal where his signing on fee is wrapped in to make it more like £90k per week. If, of course, Arsenal want him.

    YW

  17. Memo to KG: Actually, if you are truly a free-thinker and democrat, they are mutually exclusive.

  18. YW

If, of course, Arsenal want him.

That is something I have not been entirely convinced about. We shall see, I personally doubt we will sign anybody in midfield, maybe perhaps a defender who can play midfield. Wenger does like his versatile players.

  19. I had to laugh, loudly.
Poor old Geoff, that every day man of the people who loves rubbing elbows with the rich and the famous, is leading a rebellion against the club for upgrading the offerings at club level at the Emirates and charging more for it. Duh!
Our pseudo populist’s slogan is spend money on the players, leave my box seats alone.
    You couldn’t make this up.
    Ha, Ha, Hah!

  20. Love the new kit but why are they only keeping it for one season before they introduce another bloody commemorative kit?
This new kit IS Arsenal and we should keep it.
Red shirt with white sleeves (and no collars) is the way to go. I believe that if a team looks the part then they will act the part and I can see them lifting trophies in this kit. Never going to win anything dressed like Charlton. And I agree….get the blue back in the away kit too.

  21. is anyone fantastically impressed with the idea of schwarzer being our number 1? i’m not.

he’s basically a older and equally unaccomplished replica of almunia.

question: does almunia count as home-grown? isn’t he eligible for a uk passport? isn’t he also eligible to play for england?

  22. gunner17

Yes Almunia can play for England if he chooses to, and if he is called up. He is a better option than Green for one.

  23. i hope wenger stops playing arshavin down the left. he’s balls there.

he should be the second striker, and it should be either him or van persie in there.

leave the left to nasri and vela.

  24. It’s so funny how elmundodeportivo completely ignored cesc’s comment it just show how subjective they are. They should be called Barca’s official propaganda service.

I like the new kit it looks really nice and I know it is more a commercial statement from Nike that the shirt is environmentaly friendly but it is still a good thing to do this. When you thinking of all the kits from all the clubs and all the national team that will be sold it is a good thing.

I really hope Eduardo stays as I believe this year he could come back to his pre injury form and if we keep playing the 4-3-3 we do need all the strikers we have so we can play a competitive team on all four fronts.

Can’t wait for all the signings to be done and the season to kick in. In my opinion this season will be make or brake. If we get some trophies to reward the beautiful football we have been playing, the important players like cesc will stay knowing the team will only get stronger every year and therefore could be on top of european and english football for the next decade.

  25. I don’t want Schwarzer!! This guy is average at best and won’t bring anything.

We should keep Almunia as number 1, loan Fabianski for a year so he can get his confidence back and have Mannone and Sczenzny as back up.

  26. gunnerluc

    Agree regarding the goalkeepers.

Almunia is a good keeper, plus we will have too many defensive changes for next season already. We need to keep a bit of consistency at least, so sticking with Almunia is better than buying one of these over rated players everyone links us to. Fabianski going on loan will do him a world of good, he will come back a very good goalkeeper, all he needs is a run of games. He has the talent, his confidence just seemed to take a massive knock after being chucked in at the deep end when not quite ready.

  27. Before a goalkeeper had to be old and experienced to be good but all this has changed now, the young keepers are really well trained and can cope with the pressure.

Look at Casillas he started at a really woung age, Lloris and Mandanda are both under 25. If Wenger thinks his young keeper are good enough we should give them their chances and not take a guy that could be their dad as a quick fix replacement.

  28. gunnerluc

We can’t afford to with all the changes at the back, could prove costly with a young keeper behind a very much changed defence.

  29. Almunia is not a good keeper. His catalogue of errors over the last two years prove that.

Fabianski is just the worst Arsenal keeper i have seen in over 40 years

  30. Hark must be going for the worst Arsenal supporter award – your doing great. 40 years hahaaha good one

  31. Shotta-gunna I hope you believe what you’re saying. I live it!

  32. ChrisGoona I understand your point, but if Wenger, as he said many times before see Scznezny as the future number 1 we should not block his development.

I think that the few years waiting on the wing is what has been detrimental to Fabianski’s confidence. When we bought him he was just voted the best goalkeeper in the polish league and look know how people don’t rate him.

Football has changed and the goalkeeping position has changed also. The young keepers are ready much earlier now because they are much better trained technically, tactically and psycologically.

What is your solution then? As the only other way is to take in a reserve goalkeeper a la Schwarzer, have Mannone as third and loan both Fabianski and Sznenzy.

  33. gunnerluc

I think we should get somebody else in who is experienced, I am not opposed to bringing someone like Schwarzer in to compete with Almunia for the number 1 spot. It can only enhance our team over the season by not relying on 1 goalkeeper, and putting pressure on our bright young goalkeepers to perform in high pressure champions league and Premiership games.

Fabianski could play 3rd choice and Carling Cup , but I think it will be beneficial to Fabianski to take a 6 month loan and come back with some top level or Championship playing time under his belt. Mannone could stay as 3rd choice.

That would be the best solution for me..

  34. ChrisGoona

True it could be a good solution but just to let Fabianski and Sczenzy to continue their progression.

For Fabianski I would prefer a loan outside of England so he can get back his confidence quietly and without the constant fouling he was subjected on every cross and corner.

  35. Silver Gunner

Fabianski needs to be number 1 for whole season in a team like blackpool where the expectations are not so high he will relax and then we can see if he is a good keeper or one prone to high profile errors.

Did anyone see the pics of the england players puffing away at cigars and drinking beers post england game it made me sick to the stomach and glad walcott was not there to be associated withany of it phew.

    http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3035277/England-teams-booze-up-after-World-Cup-thrashing.html

  36. F*ck Ghana and Africa! Cyprus aren’t celebrating the fact that Germany are representing Europe in the remaining rounds! They couldn’t give a rat’s! Same with me and this africa bilge….

  37. Silver Gunner

btw i love our new kit.

  38. gunnerluc

I think that would be best for him, and I think he will come back stronger for the loan spell. It could be what he needs to push on and really have a go at the number 1 spot.

  39. Silver Gunner

Harv what have you against Ghana?

  40. Totally agree.

1 year loan in Germany, France or Spain so he can get is confidence back and then come back to show why Wenger bought him and gave him his faith.

  41. Silver Gunner

gunnerluc away from the prem for fabiansky is not ideal imo as he will have to face the same bombardment and physical pressures when he returns he needs to toughen up here without the pressures he has now.

  42. A loan at a Championship, or lower Premiership team could be better for Fabianski to get some playing time and much needed confidence.

  43. Silver gunner
I see your point about the physical pressure as it is true that the EPL is the league where the goalkeepers are the less protected by the referees.
But if he stays in England he will have the same pressure and it won’t help building his confidence back. The players will apply the same tactic they used against him last year, namely fouling him at every cross in order to prevent him to collect the ball.
Last year I was furious the referees did not protect him against these dirty tactics. The player in front of him did not play once the cross just tried to block him which is for me a disgrace that they dd not give a foul.
If the player challenge the goalkeeper for the ball, it is not a foul but if does not try to get the ball it should be a foul every time.

  44. On the goalkeeping thread, gunnerluc where you said:

“…..but if Wenger, as he said many times before see Scznezny as the future number 1 we should not block his development.

I think that the few years waiting on the wing is what has been detrimental to Fabianski’s confidence…….etc”

I too, am sure Sczezny will be our number 1 in the future. But perhaps that being public knowledge and the accepted wisdom, (with Arsene saying it himself,) might also be detrimental to Fabainki’s confidence.

I don’t know what I would do… stick with Almunia I suppose, for consistency and stability’s sake, which was ChrisGooner’s good point. What with our new central defence.

  45. Fabianski’s confidence is shot to pieces and the only way he’s going to get it back is by going out on loan and playing regularly (even in Div 1).

Almunia has done a job while we’ve been skint but he just isn’t good enough. If we are serious about challenging for honours next season he must be replaced.

  46. Italics would be useful. How do you do them, again?

  47. Hark

No, he is on a par with Lukic and no worse than George Wood or Jimmy Rimmer were during their spells at the club. And a hell of a lot better than Shabaan and Richard Wright.

    YW

  48. A curious post from Harv, considering he is in Africa…

  49. italics

    text goes here

    obviously without the spaces

  50. Blimey George Wood …..Now he was awful!

  51. Chris

    And there is the problem.

    Mingus

You need to use the “less than” symbol with an “i” in the middle, followed by the “greater than” symbol. To close the italics, it is the same order with “/’i” in the middle.

    YW

  52. mingus

    didnt quite work, use…

i in between the … then add your text, and close at the end with /i in between the

    does this make sense?

  53. yes didn’t work again 😦

    I tried!

  54. I quite liked Taylor, shame he didn’t really make it

  55. like this?

  56. Also being from Africa I can understand Harv’s comment, just because we are Africans does not make us favor Gana any more than an englishman would Germany.

  57. Has anybody else heard about all the England in-camp fighting between terry and gerrard?

Supposedly Gerrard got that 16 year old pregnant then gagged the story (old news, im sure people have heard this). This angered Terry when Gerrard didn’t lose the captaincy as he did and that was the alleged reason behind his press conference to raise issues to the Coach. I don’t know any more than that and it doesn’t make a whole load of sense but it’s supposed to hit the papers in the next couple of days. I’m told.

  58. 😉 you mastered it

  59. els.. it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if it was true. Don’t matter how much money you give some people, you can’t buy class.

  60. That’s what I thought Chris.

Just great timing for it to happen eh!

Still probably wouldn’t have helped them being more ‘together’ they still can play one touch football.

  61. Arsenalkabisa

    @ chris

do this put phrase in here remove the dots..

  62. These South Amercan teams are extraordinary. Uruquay with a population of 6 million progressing to the final eight has been well deserved. Wenger should send his scouts in that direction!

I would love to volunteer the time of the French and English teams to go down to the Gulf and clean up the fuggen mess created by British Petroleum. And, its getting fuggen worse. The CEO of BP has been out sailing and he wants his useless fuggen life back the twat! He is truly loved by the American people.

  63. Im an African and im supporting Holland(RVP) now. i could care less what Ghana do. if its not Nigeria then i dont care.

you keep hearing the world cup pundits saying all of africa hopes on ghana. Load of rubbish. I bet you most of africa doesnt care. Not really. You think that if Ghana won they would share their success with Africa or rub it in our noses?

would the british be hoping that Germany win if they were the only european team left. its condescending.

  64. As I’m now an expert Arsenalkabisa…. allow me!

Whatever you want to put in italics, start the sentence with the

    then the sentence

and then close the sentence with

    Easy really.

  65. Aaaaaagh!

  66. very easy mingus!

  67. haha, I had the same issues

  68. start with , end with

    try above without the quotes.

    i did it. 🙂

  69. no i didn’t lets try agian

    start with , end with

    remove the 8s above

  70. start with , end with

    replace x by i

    third time?

  71. goonerwife

I see your point of view… as I am part of rest of the world! I think it will be good for an African team to do well in the tournament. That is most people’s point of view outside of Africa, and to keep the host continent involved really, even if it is not the host nation. I know its not the same, and its pretty stupid for us to think like this, especially if other African nations could care less. Maybe this is us being narrow minded, I apologise if it is wrong for us to wish a team well.

You can compare it to a bit like when neutral English fans are rooting for English clubs in the Champions league and European competition. I personally like to see them certain English teams go out (Chelsea, Man Utd, Spurs, City), but it is nice to see some English teams do well in Europe.. eg Fulham.

  72. V funny! That’s put me in the right mood to have another look at Eboue and the N Korean coach clip from yesterday! Brilliiant.

  73. Silver Gunner

I am second gen nigerian lived in Enugu for 8 years and would love Ghana to win the world cup not the usual south americans or western europeans, just my take.

  74. I just want a team that plays good football to win.. or Van Persie 🙂

I would love Ghana to win as well because they are probably expected to go out, and would be good for an African team to win it for a change.

So Ghana or Holland for me.. both would be their 1st time. Realistically speaking, if they can’t do it I would like Brazil to win if they knock Holland and Ghana out.

Germany vs Brazil is my prediction for the final. Spain with an embrassing exit to Paraguay, Germany narrowly knocking Argentina out in a high scoring game.

  75. Better get the U.S. players off to the Gulf as well, Two Owls, since 39% of BP is owned by Americans.

  76. New kit is real nice, i only think the red boader on the short sleeves are a little too think. Overall though, NICE!

How is it that Eduardo is going to have a hard time in Wengers style of football? Didnt Wenger Buy him and was it not because he is a deadly striker?

He may leave but that doesnt make sense leftpinky.

  77. I used to know the late Chief Nwankwo (a published) from Enugu, Silver.

I support Ghana, very strongly. It’s a fantastic team in many ways. I’m not sure I would say the same for Cote D’Ivoire if thay had gotten through; but I used to love Cameroon. Both are a let down, not that they didn’t get through, but something about the absence of ‘team spirit’.

I’ve been disappointed too many times by Nigeria and long given up the ghost of supporting, and its hard to support SA or various reasons. I far prefer Algeria anyway.

Should Africans support Ghana? No, why? I also support Holland, USA and Paraguay for some strange reason I forget.

On the other when someone says f*ck Ghana and Africa, like Harv, I smell a Seth Efriken mzungu because it’s what they say. No self-respecting African would say this on a blog site or even in their heart. So Harv, go sit on something sharp.

  78. Eduardo can hold his own when fit.

  79. I am South African and I am fully behind Ghana as our last African representative in the cup.

I certainly don’t demand that every other African-based supporter support Ghana, but almost every South African Footie fan I know is supporting Ghana, and that goes across all races.

  80. “…but almost every South African Footie fan I know is supporting Ghana, and that goes across all races.”

    Thats a great things MikeSA!

  81. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, I am a white South African.

  82. A person from Ghana is not OBLIGATED to support Ghana but that comment from Marv is vicious and unecessary. JO it doesnt make you look good to say you understand him. All he has to say is I dont support Ghana even though I am from Africa, done!

  83. Well I’m African and I’ll be supporting Ghana against Uruguay but that’s as far as I’ll go. Unless somebody knocks out Brazil – then I’ll go native and it will be Ghana all the way.

  84. Thank you MikeSA. I really appreciate your post, and I believe it to be true. I over-reacted. It’s the language of Harv that got my goat, language I’ve been on the receiving end of one too many times.

  85. MikeSA interesting view. I thought the Dutch would have significant support among the Boer community for historical reasons?

  86. Zimpaul, don’t feel bad about your reaction, it’s more than understandable after that tripe.

I do understand that it pushes anyone, no matter how calm or decent, over the edge.

  87. KG, I am 3rd generation South African, but if I go back in my ancestry I am descended from 3/4 Irish stock and 1/4 German stock, although the German stock does apparently have some smattering of Dutch blood much earlier somewhere.

I have always like Holland since watching the 78 final live as my first WC live experience (we only got TV in 76, so I watched the 74 cup final in black and white at the movie house), but I will support Ghana for as far as they go (hopefully into the final!), then there are any number of teams I will just enjoy watching rather than supporting in any manner.

  88. Silver Gunner

Good to know that some African’s are behind them!!! 🙂

  89. ChrisGoona

Oh i have no problem with you guys or anyone else supporting Ghana. i think its nice. im just saying, that the whole of africa is not behind them in that sense like the pundits like to say.

I dont wish Ghana bad, if they win it good on them, i just dont really care either way.

By the way, i love reading your posts cos they are so positive. You sound exactly like my husband. So very positive.

  90. I am not from Africa and its Ghana all the way for me.

KenGun, I am hoping that someone will knock out Brazil, even more so now so that you can go native. hee hee!

  91. Since the USA (i am american born) and nigeria (my heritage and partly raised there).

I expect nothing from nigeria but i still find i feel dissapointed when they go out.

Other than that i support arsenal boys wherever they are

  92. YW I’d like you to know that I love the aclf family. You’ve created something special.

  93. I was expecting a new signing today…but I guess it was not meant to be!
    ===

I feel the sound of “Frustration & Warning” in Fabregas’ comments, “I don’t like to sit on the bench” well son, you know where your name will always be first on the team sheet, so think twice.
    ===

I’m actually disappointed in the African teams this WC, this was a big big chance for them to show real progress and on their own home ground “Africa”. It would be great if Ghana make it to the next round.

I like how Gilberto still has it.

    We feel the love.

  95. From the remaining teams, Its Holland vs Germany for finals and Ghana to pir spain to 3rd place…. how feasible is that?

  96. I must say to you chaps who are talking about the African teams. In my humble opinion, I think they have advanced in quality from the last World Cup. But, it would only be fair to say that the Asians have also advanced in quality. I would be remiss if I did not comment about the South American teams who have also progressed quite decidedly really. North America has two participants with the US and Mexico who gave a good account of themselves. However, Argentina and Brazil continue to show the world how football is played when people really care!

  97. This is when the tension begins. You “know” that your team is going to win but your opponent is lethal. The opponents striker plays for your favourite club. On his day he is devastating. Having been injured most of the season he has a point to prove. Your favourite coach says he is as good as Messi and Rooney. You relax thinking that with fellows like Dirk Kuyt and Nigel de Jong backing him he’ll loose. And that other danger man named after the fearless robin is recovering from injury and is too selfish. So now you are confident again. Brazil will win. But at the back of your mind you say – but she may loose. Only twenty and one half hours to go. And you think – Paul N will laugh at me if we lose! You relax again and say “we’ll win!” The long wait has began. The samba boys versus total football. May the best team win. Obviously …. We’ll win as long as don’t lose!

  98. How to do italics:

    <i>your sentence</i>

for bold just change the -i- to a -b-

  99. anyone able to post a link with next season’s kit?nigerian president apparently suspended the national team from competing for two years.just wonder where african soccer is going.

  100. When a president starts interfering in football, I’d be more concerned about where his country is going.

  101. @keysersoze, yes there’s been some good stuff on youngguns recently. That disbanding the reserves thread is a good read. Less of the nonsense that sometimes crops up there. I’m not sure sending so many players out on-loan, to so many different teams, would be such a good idea. Mainly because they might lose the team-spirit that has been built up over the years. It would be good to keep them competitive and together as much as possible.

  102. poliziano, agree with you.i said african soccer generally because its becoming a norm (political interference) i.e nigeria and not long ago togo.hope you see my point.

  103. Paul N seriously go get bent, I dont agree with the whole fuck Africa and fuck Ghana,, I said I understand that we dont have to support them just because they are african. People on ths blog love putting words in others mouths. Fucking twat! I really dont care how good you think I look.

  104. YW,locating Harv (was it?) to sending his posting from somewhere in Africa makes me wonder…..how local can you trace someone just from their i.p. address?

  105. There’s no doubt that top African teams are now technically almost on par with all but the top 2 or 3 European and South American teams. It’s an astonishing progress and story, since Zaire was humiliated by (was it Germany?) at the world cup 30 or so years ago. The trend is clear, and soon an African team really will win the world cup.

Individually, Africa-Europe-South America players are level, there is no difference. The difference in results at a world cup is simply that all top African players ply their trade abroad, not at home, and this undermines the national side in every case – how could it be otherwise? Imagine if every one of the English or German or Spanish top 20 players played in other continents outside Europe.

The reason Ghana is performing is that many of the team have played a lot of football together at youth level (how quickly people forget Ghana WON the u-20 world cup last year beating Brazil if I recall in the finals). This is same underlying reason that SA beat France, Algeria held England, while Nigeria couldn’t beat anybody. We know Nigerian top players are exceptional.

I don’t know about their president banning international matches for 2 years, and it is strictly against FIFA rules. But I bet it is not exactly what it seems and there are underlying reasons. I would not judge too fast until these become clear.

  106. Poliziano at 8:33 p.m. You’ve hit the nail on the head!

9 hours to the big game.

  107. JO, I rather like being straight.

You agree with an idiotic comment and then you get mad with me. funny.

  108. just trying italics… sorry

  109. Thanks Dups

  110. Being an African myself I am behind Ghana, not because they are the only African team left in the tournament but because since i started watching this tournament they have played really well.

I was also for Cameroon but only coz Song was in that team, no matter how hard i tried i couldnt bring myself to support S.Africa against Mexico and Vela had alot to do with it.

I dont particularly like Nigeria (they are way overrated) but also because i have a grudge against them having played them at Nairobi in the last qualifiers match. As much as I love Ebuoe I couldn’t support Ivory Coast coz i cant stand them.

I love Brazil and always have supported them but since they will be playing Netherlands(Van Persie) for the first time i will be cheering their opposition.

  111. RVP and Holland all the way for me. Although I will always thank Germany for the humiliation of Terry, Cole, Rooney and co, & therefore support them against Argentina.

  112. steww hear hear
