Refs Miss Commonsense, Nutty Catalans & Don’t Expect Any New Signings

It’s Too Late To Say You’re Sorry

So Arsene is to receive an apology from Keith Hackett for his sending off. Perchance that may carry some weight within the smoke-filled corridors of the Football Association where the butcher, baker and candlestick maker decide the fates of players and managers alike. And according to reports. it will carry such weight which is more than I expect from UEFA tomorrow.

The incident was symptomatic of the poor decision making by the referee at Old Trafford. On the TV replays, the fourth official, Lee Probert, quite clearly says to Wenger, “Kicking that bottle was totally unacceptable”. The only way in which I can describe his body language was that of a six year old child, stomping off after an argument to tell a parent that someone will not do as they want and is ruining the game.

Did Wenger merit a dismissal? No, not under any circumstances. If the official was so incensed, he needs to question whether or not he has the mental acumen to be officiate since he was too emotional. It is apparent he feels no empathy with managers and more to the point, it brings into severe question his man-management abilities. If genuinely concerned about the atmosphere, Probert should have quietly walked over to Wenger to suggest that the Frenchman reassesses his behaviour.

My question to Probert is, why? Wenger accepted the offside decision but was utterly frustrated to be denied a thoroughly deserved point. More to the point, it begs the question as to what we want from our managers. Even the most implaccable is under tremendous scrutiny from the media, with nowhere to hide. Emotions are bound to run high, especially in a big game such as Saturday’s. To keep them bottled up would, I feel, inevitably exacerbate health issues. The stress that all of them feel is incredible and it is not hard to see why they snap in the heat of the moment.

Instead, remonstrating and calling over the referee merely served to intensify the pressure of the situation. Ordering Wenger to the stands subjected the manager to abuse and gloating from the Manchester United supporters. Standing atop the dugout was not perhaps the best place to be especially in light of events at Upton Park in the week. One push and whoops, there goes a season for the manager.

Prior to the match, Keith Hackett had spoken of the need to monitor the behaviour of managers. Perhaps a better idea for his organisation would be to monitor more closely the actions of the fourth officials. Even so, nothing will come of this situation. Probert will still be officiating in the next round of Premier League matches. Dean and co will still be officiating with the whole incident swept under the refereeing carpet.

The Curdled Journey

Making an issue of tapping up is for the most part, entirely pointless and totally futile. All clubs do it, in the spirit of football law, since the media constantly ask managers about specific players. As soon as the question is answered with anything other than, “We do not talk about other players since they are contracted to another club“, tapping up essentially occurs. There is little that can be done about a one-off scenario.

The Spanish clubs have this off to a fine art. Using their pet media outlets as the driving forces, they merely respond to the questions posed, even if they were planted in the first place. Take Cesc for example. Barcelona continually talk about him, Laporta did so once more, with the temerity to speak of his respect for Arsene Wenger in the same breath.

Let’s be clear. Barcelona has no respect for Arsenal or Wenger. I am not even convinced that they really want Fabregas other than to salvage their affronted pride at the way in which he left them. Not so long ago, Berguistain told the world that the player was not wanted by the Catalans as he had left and would need to almost beg to return. Laporta contradicts that constantly but always refers to the manner of his departure. This is a face-saving exercise on his part to play politics, one that the English media is only too willing to participate in.

Last Days Of Summer

Closing the transfer window is perhaps a cause of celebration. It ought to put a stop to the continual flood of ill-informed guesswork that permeates the back pages, airwaves and electronic media. Over the next two or three months that will be case, ready for the winter window warm-up in December.

Of course the flipside is that continual moaning about how we have not signed a world-class goalkeeper, another centre back, a defensive midfielder or a new striker. Add into that the tiresome whinging about how the board has not given Wenger any funds and it all becomes incredibly wearing and tiresome. Do I think Wenger will sign anyone this time? No to the extent that if he does, I will be entirely amazed. He has a good squad of players and it takes an exceptional talent to improve it. There are plenty of those players out there but few who their current employers want to sell at a good price for Arsenal. We shall see.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Lets now draw a line under saturdays game. The reaction by Wenger reminds me of the way he reacted after the 50th game in 2004.That effected the team and we never recovered for the rest of the season

Yes we we wronged but lets move on

  2. Oh shut up, TA6. Get behind your manager.

  3. YW

We have a good squad of players but we are still weak in back up CH’s and all 3 keepers we have are average
Can see Chamakh signing for us with Vela being loaned out for the season

  4. Thought you wanted to move on, TA 6. Why spout the same old rubbish being bandied about for the last two months?

  5. Frank

I do support our manager. But Its over now However much we rant and rave we are not going to change the result its gone now.And what about the shocking Eboue dive.

  6. Nice article YW, totally agree about transfers . I don’t actually think we need anyone, just our injured players to come back.

  7. TA6

Eboue is no worse than Rooney.

  8. You seem to not want to discuss AWs conclusions from a day or two ago, but are prepared to spout the same old press, media and fans nonsense about transfers though, TA6. AW is tight, the referee bootled that game royally. His own action standing proud amongst the podgy, spotty, foul-mouthed scum and detritus we have come to call manc fans, was courageous and imperious. If he is going to take on the football establishment, I am full square beside him. This next two weeks are going to be a dull as dishwater…I an rather glas that AW is stirring the pond a bit whilst out injured players heal.

…I will go with any transfers that AW conjures up and happy if he buys no-one.

Shame about McGready…tssssss…Celtic and the SFA will be parahs…and UEFA just look ridiculous.

  9. TA,
No there is no need to move on. There is now a two week window where the various football associations of the world are allowed to take our players and injure them without financial cost to themselves, before they come back and are not available for selection for the next match. Getting at a biased media and incompetent FA and Premier League officials is exactly what we need to do in the intervening period. After all, there’ll be no one to train at London Colney for the next fortnight so who will it be putting off?

  10. haha….AW is ‘tight’ and the ref ‘bootled’ the game…great stuff.

  11. I think we need a goalkeeper and an experienced midfielder. Maybe a centre-half.

What on earth is happening with Senderos by the way?

  12. Why is that, OG. Goalkepper makes a mistake so we sack him and get another one? Which one would you buy? And which centre-half are you tasking AW and IG to buy?

  13. I think we should sell Senderos for Β£79m and buy Messi for a Β£10 postal order plus a bag of chips from my local takeaway.
Maybe on second thoughts, I’m playing too much Championship Manager.
    How about you, Ole Gunner?

  14. Frank,

I ABSOLUTELY stand by Almunia. He’s as good as any keeper in the league today. I’d have said Cech was better, but not on current form.

I think we need a keeper to push and not to replace Fabianski and Almunia. I’ve thought so for months.

  15. OG – while I think Almunia made a mistake by rushing out to face Rooney, bearing in mind what a diving cheat he is, all goalkeepers make mistakes, you just hope they keep them to the minimum over the course of a season. He can and will play better. Fabianski will be back soon to step in if Almunia needs a break. If Senderos stays, which looks increasingly likely, why do we need another centre back? What we need is our injured players back and if Arsene surprises us with a late transfer that would be a bonus.

  16. I agree with Passenal.

  17. Frank,

Centre half is not an issue. I’m happy with Senderos. I don’t think we need to buy if we don’t sell him.

We do however need an experienced midfielder. Either as competition for Cesc or as competition for Song, Diaby & Denilson. Mostly it’s because we need more experience in central midfield where the oldest person is Diaby 23, Cesc 22, Song 21, Denilson 21, Ramsey 18, Merida 19.

  18. Almunia is not good enough.A top class keeper is worth 10-12 pts a season.Lehmann was dropped after two mistakes in a row 2 seasons ago in games we didnt lose.Almunia has made 2 mistakes in two games.Double standards????

  19. On another note, it looks like the friendship with SAF is fading, thank goodness. I did not enjoy seeing Arsene being pally with that scumbag.

  20. Passenal,

I don’t even condemn Almunia for the Rooney dive. I am 100% behind Almunia, I am just talking about where we need more bodies.

Imagine Almunia broke his hand, we’ll have to rely on Mannone till Fabianski comes back. Mannone will be a good keeper, but he’s 19, never been first choice keeper playing under pressure week-in, week-out. He’s not already good enough to man the posts for us for 5 games.

We need another keeper at the level of Fabianski.

  21. I am a little surprised that many have taken the Sky Sports line and blamed Almunia for Abou’s own goal. Abou just needed to head the ball clear.
Almunia ‘Iz everybaddie maruking a player zis moment?, Orkay, orkay iz orkay. Ah oo iz maruking, Abou…I say oo is maruking Abou…ah no…nobody iz marukin im…ee scorrrra’

  22. The Wonder of You

If Almunia is not good enough, no keeper in the premiership is either.

He makes fewer mistakes than most.

  23. The Wonder of You,

Almunia kept us in several key games last season. He’s a very competent keeper. He got duped by Rooney, but same could happen to any keeper.

  24. Ole

I agree, 1 experienced sub keeper wouldnt be bad idea. Get Lehmann back to abuse Almunia from the bench!

  25. So if we include Tomas and Samir when they return and we know that Jack and AA can play central midfield as can Djourou. You reckon that with 12 possible players we are a bit light in that position, OG?

  26. What fucking twat calls himself after that awful song?

  27. Is that it with the keepers then guys? Lehmann is the suggestion?

  28. Rooney dived before contact

Arshavin gets clattered – no penalty, no card

6 bookings for Arsenal, most being for very petty offences

3 bookings for United, committing more fouls along the way

    Fletcher stayed on the pitch?!

    ___________________________

All adds up to a very biassed referee who couldn’t handle the pressure from the Manc supporters

    Bottled it completely.

  29. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Liverpool, Chelsea, City and even some Utd supporters coming up for us ons Sky’s debate section: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11979_5525954,00.html#yourviewcomments

  30. Does anyone else find it a bit offensive that our manager is still being called a pedofile!???!!

I think its unacceptable and we should put something together to get the Mancs a hefty fine, and docked points. That shit is being broadcasted to millions of people worldwide, including kids.

What you think YW, you should make a post against it, its bloody awful.

  31. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

I cant access SkySports here, what they saying exactly?

  32. Malaysiangunner

    YW excellent review.

No we do not need to buy anyone if Sendy stays. If Sendy goes we need a CB better than Silvestre.

While we say in this part of the world ‘Sorry no cure’ in our own unique manner , it actually is a moral victory, politically speaking. The Referees Association need to show respect in order to be shown respect that they so crave. They internally should also review Mike Deans performance in the OT match and quietly shunt him to Championship games for a few months, before he does any damage to the association.

Mistakes happens to the best of us, we move on. MA and Diaby will be valuable players for us this season and they will make amends. THey need to keep their confidence high.
This siege mentality that is building a head of steam surrounding the Arsenal is perfect. Come you Gunners no one will do us any favour let show them!!!
No Fear!!! We Are The Arsenal!!!

  33. Flint McCullough

    Good points, YW.

Your image of Proberts is so amusingly but sadly accurate. He should be sent to the Blue Square for a couple or 10 seasons to get a bit of the expected composure that is a must for a referee.

A game that we paid back with interest any good fortune that we had in previous games.

To take the game to Mu like that on their patch deserves credit for the whole team that played.

I fully agree with Ole & Framk about Manuel. Perhaps a poor decision for the penalty, but that error is very rare from him, & he would have every right to expect Diaby to deal with that, Seaman certainly would not have come for it.

However Manuel has, I feel, been in a bit of a dip in form to start the season. It happens to ALL players & it looks like he is not at his sharpest yet or he is carrying an injury?

If the latter is the case then we may see a stop gap ‘keeper come in as cover, considering Fabianski is still a few weeks away too.

Over the last 2 seasons I would not swap Almunia for anyone in the PL. He is not the greatest ‘keeper we have ever had but from what I have seen he certainly does not make any more goal costing mistakes than the Van de Sars or Cechs of recent times.

  34. Frank,

To be fair, I wasn’t thinking of Rosicky and Nasri as central midfielders. In a 4-3-3 you are exactly right. That’s where they’d fit into the team.

I am still stuck in a 4-4-2 mentality.

That would make Rosicky the experienced head in central midfield. It could pass.

  35. I think what has become very clear to all us supporters is we face a battle against everyone this season.

Not only are we playing a game of football, we are playing a game of politics, we are playing against the media, and against all the neutrals who love to watch Arsenal play. There is such a fascination around our team like with the huge money spending club of Citeh right now we have to deal with them.

I cannot say how proud I was of Wenger to stand up to the lot of them at Old Trafford. They have called him a pedofile and all sorts, they have written us off, abused and discriminated our players, but we will come good in the end.

Unlucky Diaby, unlucky Almunia, but someway or another the ref was determined to hand the game to United anyway.

  36. i thought, we had a world class goalkeeper. Last season Almunia improved a lot. But the main problem is , Arsenal players make mistake regularly. I can’t understand, why one goalkeeper came out and block a striker running with a defender. Almunia ran a long to block rooney.
We have a very strong squad now. But lack of experianse to play against strong teams and making mistakes are again a big problem for arsenal.

  37. Does anyone else find it a bit offensive that our manager is still being called a Pedophile !?

  38. Correction: Mannone is actually 21.

  39. CG,

I call Ferguson worse names. It’s football.

  40. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

@ChrisGoona, just finding a lot of other fans (and some Mancs) being surprisingly supportive and even picking up on the fact that Arsenal is being victimised by the media.

  41. O/G – I agree with Frank. Light in midfield? Cesc is out short term. Rosicky and Nasri are only a few weeks away. Please.

Re Midfielders: Diaby was a monster on Saturday. He absolutely destroyed every ManUSA player in his one-to-one match-ups. Compared to last year, it is like night and day. Instead of easily being dispossessed Abou is the one swatting the opponents out of the way. All that physical work over the summer is paying off. Where the hell is AW going to play him?

PS: We need to despatch the trolls and squeamish, wobbly supporters who come on board to undermine our team. No true supporter can use one mistake in the heat of battle to judge a player. If that is the case then we should bench Diaby and Almunia for a single error in a high profile game.

  42. I’ve totally enjoyed how the media hacks and punditry are looking for excuses for McGready’s dive during the Celtic Hibbs match suggesting that he was not near the penalty area so it’s not as bad or he was avoiding contact so he doesn’t get hurt….

Hypocritical bastards. Pandora’s box is wide open and I love the poetic justice.

With regards to transfers, my sense is that Wenger should only sign someone if they are capable of adding significant value (they are markedly better than who we have), or just for cover and not to replace the current crop of players, who are doing a magnificent job. There’s room for improvement and rather than see a new signing as the solution, this team needs to be given the space and the right encouragement to fill in the gaps. If he doesn’t sign someone, we still have a good squad, in my view, a very strong squad. I’d rather he spends energy rebuilding Senderos’ confidence, than sign a center half for the sake of pleasing the fans, if only for the reason that Senderos is already very familiar with Wengerball.

The truth is that the so called quality players fans and pundits are clammering for don’t grow on trees and it’s one thing saying we need to buy, and another to actually identify someone and pull the deal off.

The most important thing is not to pick up major injuries during this international break, and for the team to get back on the pitch at Eastlands and get back what is rightfully their’s, a good mauling of Abu Dhabi City.

  43. cheers Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Ole – difference being thousands are singing that crap on live television to one of the fineset managers around who is trying to do a job.

Would you like me singing your name calling you a mug or a cu*t while your trying to work?

  44. Remember when Fergie was accused of that rape thing in SA?

I think it should be sang back to him at the Emirates. he will know how a library sounds like

  45. ey YW

am in moderation for the R – word!

its against Rednose, they sing pedophile over Wenger so why can we do them back with that for Fergie?

  46. Come on Arsene, sell Cesc for the maximum that you can get. How can you build a team around someone who is always going to be a destabilizing effect. He should either shut up or state clearly whether he wants to go to Barcelona or not.

  47. Pedophile taunt is not as bad as Mourinho calling Wenger a voyeur. I can’t remember if he apologised.

Thing about Senderos is he’s in the last year of his contract. If he’s not good enough to be offered a new contract, then he should be sold to recoup a few million pounds. TV had made all the difference, whereas Senderos had disappointed. He had not even made it to our substitute bench.

  48. All the lads done very well on saturday, I thought we gave the ball away a bit too much though in midfield. Its something we havn’t done in our previous games, but in such a high intesity game we were excellent. Like Wenger said, there was only a few moments that let us down, or as you say ‘a few rushes of blood’.

To go to Old Trafford and dominate the game like we did was great, 2 silly mistakes changes the whole perception of that for some. To me it only justifies our last 4 games and this defeat cannot dictate where our quality will stand come end of the season.

  49. Great Post Yogi as usual.

It is absolutely clear we have come out of the United game with far more positives than United.

As for the 3 points, we have a whole season to recapture these, in that, they will not be accountable for any failings when the trophies are handed out.

Players in? Who cares, if we do, we do, if we don’t, we don’t.

This team shorn of so many looked more than comfortable on the big stage, that from the final games of last season is an indication of growing maturity and a readiness to believe in our own abilities.

Much maligned trio Diaby, Song and Denilson have riled against the growing resentment of pundits and fans alike and guess what….turns out as the gaffer said, these lads are up to it.

We may have to battle against hard luck, as one can only assume, looking at recent history, that we will have to overcome this, rather than waiting for it to change, but satyrday’s fixture has told me, Wenger’s team has ran the cycle of change and will be able to battle on the biggest of stages.

  50. TV and Gallas had an excellent game once again, Man U never had any clear cut chances throughout the whole game.

  51. This article courtersy of Asenal-mania is excellent. I’ts been sent round to media houses and the FA, it’ll be very interesting to see what reaction or inaction happens.

The media and the FA: Have you got your priorities right?

  52. @ flint
I seem to recall reading somewhere, maybe here, that Almunia’s wife’s mom had passed away and that it has quite an effect on him. I might be misinformed though!

  53. We lost big games last season, because defensively we were uneasy and unorganised, we lost this one because of two individual unique errors, the kind that might not be repeated this season.

Simple. The loss was not quite like losing to Michael Owen in the F.A. Cup final but not too far away.

No trophy, but an absolute certainty that we support the better side with the greater opportunity for future victories.

  54. The truth is at 1-0 Im never confident we can close the game out. And its not our defense entirely because Vermy and Gallas have been outstanding. Its our propensity to loose concentration at key times. Lack of defensive discipline. So far this season we’ve conceded against Utd, Celtic, Atletico, everton and pompey.

That said, we’re much better than last year!

Then at 2-1 we lacked that little bit of savy and composure to calm things down, re-build and carve out a result. Instead of retaining possession we reduced ourselves to long balls and gave away possession all too easily. The team is experienced now and physically aggressive. But we don’t have any experience on the field as to how to win big games. Utd were the poorer team, played destructive football, but they still knew how to win!

We’re a much different team than last year and its great to see it. But I still think we need a little leadership and guidance. We’re missing that.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see Vieira come back. Of course he’s not the player he once was and he won’t be a threat to the players coming through but I think his experience will be important and his presence will have a galvanising effect in the dressingroom and with the fans.

  55. Joe.

Get over Vieira. Rosicky the little mozart is very experienced and capable of providing that calmness and leadership.

  56. Excellent article, YW. Spot on again.

Great posts today as well – stand up Chrisgoona, Malaysiangunner and Darius Stone, amongst others.

    *****
And it was good to hear a couple of journalists attesting to the fact that they had seen footage from a different angle which showed conclusively that contact was made by Boruc on Eduardo. So perhaps those who insisted that Eduardo must be lying and Arsene must be spinning, will think again. And be more humble in future.

Darius Stone, I too am enjoying the squirming over Rooney’s dive and Fletcher’s foul! Not to mention McGeady’s effort.

From a PR point of view, Arsene has a played a blinder so far and I think the tide of public opinion on Eduardo is turning in our favour since Saturday. And the media will of course follow. Hilariously, we will soon see the same hacks and pundits who shrieked outrage about Eduardo, turning their fire on UEFA and the world’s sorest losers, Celtic and the SFA.

I do hope Senderos stays, as now seems likely. I’ve got a soft spot for the big lug. And he and Djourou would be the natural pairing for the CC.

  57. Joe,

I understand how you feel, last season and a few before have worn us a little thin.

But the lack of defensive discipline you speak of was no longer evident on Saturday. Song and the introduction of Vermaelen have looked to resolve these issues.

It did not seem to me, a lack of concentration but simply an individual misjudgement on the part of Almunia and similarly a miscue on the part of Diaby.

The concession of goals in big games last season was an inevitable pain, with teams attacking and exposing our vulnerabilities, that was simply not the case on Saturday.

    Take heart!

  58. In short Saturday’s game could be replayed a hundred times and we may not concede those same goals.

  59. Replace Almunia phpafff! You idiots. He’s a great keeper in a great team. The slightest error in judgement and he’s now ‘the one who has to go’.

Normally, he would have had that ball, but Rooney is fast so it was a slight misjudgement.

Vieira would, sorry to say, be an embarrassment in this stellar team, his glory days are gone. We have everything we need, except enough loyal and true fans who support thick and thin.

  60. ChrisGoon, what a great post @ 11.23, classic.

  61. george e graham

Almunia is so good he has never ever been called up by Spain.

Beaten twice from 40 yards last season by Bentley and Ronaldo.Had a shocker at Stoke both goals down to him.Pompey home and again on saturday.Dont tell me he doesnt make mistakes.

  62. Numerous times Almunia has come out and gotten to similar balls. The moment he came out you could even see Gallas lessen his pace – he knew Almunia would get it. So did I. So did all the other pub mates. Nine out of ten time he always gets the ball when one on one. Almunia is very good in one on one situations – he is not so good with reflexes, but one of the best when one on one.

This was a one chance out of ten.

In relation to Diaby, i have no idea what was going through his mind. I call it a OMG moment. Probably we need to speak to some of his pals, to understand what the fuck really was going through his head. it ranks among the most commical own goals that i have ever seen.

The plus points is that we get to get rid of this howlers early in the season.

But Arsenal need to cultivate some street savvyness. We seem to have it when Cesc is around, but the moment he is not there its like everyone is in panic mode and cant keep the ball.

  63. Joe

United played “Destructive football”… that has got to be the quote of the day!!

The ref was pretty destructive and Arsenal’s scintillating play.. not United mate. We gave them the game with 2 errors, and a little bit of help from the ref.

How on earth we came out of the game with more yellows is beyond me also!

  64. Flint McCullough

    Struggling to find them though, g e g ?

  65. @george e graham

Do you appear only when times are not good? Where will you go when we wallop wigan six nil?? to wigans site to WUM them?

  66. george e graham

    Fungunner

Cant agree that Arsene has played a blinder since the Eduardo incident. They is no way what happensd with Eduardo didnt have an effect on saturday.explain how the AA penatly wasnt given?.Arsene should have come out and said the ref made a mistake in the Celtic game. And the matter would have ended. The Eduardo incident is now going to effect us over the rest of the season even the most blatant penalty wont be given to us

Also i would fine Eboue for his dive. How f**king stupid is he to dive after what happend with Eduardo

  67. California Gooner

Good to see folks defending Almunia. I had noticed the flack Almunia was receiving around the web and was going to post on it last night (GMT +9) but figured it was too late for anyone to read it. What gets me is that Almunia has one bad game (I will agree with that) and already those who believe he is not good enough are back at it.
My own strong suspicion is that he will use the international break, comeback re-focused, and be a monster for the rest of the year.

However, I am concerned about cover. I might be the only one, but Fabianski makes me very nervous. He also happens to be injured. So, I would be re-assured to see another quality keeper brought in as cover. To me, Szczesny looks like the man of the future, but perhaps not yet.

  68. Almunia is so good he has never ever been called up by Spain.

neither has Wenger ever been called by the French. Strange world this… i wonder why?

  69. Chris

Two wrongs don’t make a right. Taunting Ferguson about unproven and frankly malicious allegations does not counter the scumbag chanting about paedophilia. With United, there is always a charge of hyprocrisy that they cannot defend themselves about.

Constantly complaining about the sickening taunts regarding Munich whilst indulging in equally sickening taunts themselves. In each case the minority numbers shout loudest and condemn the club that they support.

    YW

  70. @george e graham

So you only decide to turn up twice a year when Almunia makes a mistake!! hahahaha

    nice one arsenalkabisa

Danny.. very true, we got beaten by our own mistakes. Im pretty sure we can eradicate those on the training ground….

Show Almunia how Boruc held his hands back to Eduardo’s burst into the penalty area = Almunia becomes 100% guranteed to not conceding another goal EVER. Then all we need to do is hand a Diaby a sort of compass before each game that indicates which goal he must score in!!

  71. Also i would fine Eboue for his dive. How f**king stupid is he to dive after what happend with Eduardo

    Are you demented?

What if he had gotten a free kick in a dangerous area and gotten that “boy” sent off. Would it have been well played for doing Evre’ back on his game?

Dives are not the only foul plays that go on in a football field. Shirts are tugged, noses are Elbow hit etc etc. Its the dark side of football.

Its not right, but its done by even some of the greates players. maradona has his hand of God!

you must be demented, A Man U Supporter, Or a Spud.

  72. george e graham

That still doesnt mean it has affected our performances you mug. So you agree that the refs and the media are against us then, what is your excuse?

  73. California Gooner

BTW, whatever the Man U fans might chant, in my own experience every single one of them have expressed huge admiration for Arsene. I often hear the ribbing about his supposed blindness to Arsenal mistakes or that he is a ‘bit of a sore loser’, but mostly it is thinly veiled or even outright admiration. So, however distasteful the chants, I don’t think anyone takes it seriously; it is just a mob behaving badly and enjoying it.

  74. george e graham

    arsenalkabisa

It just does my head in when fans say Almunia makes less errors than the other top 4 keepers.

On the Diaby goal did Almunia give him a shout?

  75. George E Graham.

Alvez the Barcelona keeper isn’t the Spain goalkeeper. What’s your point.

As far as I can remember, Seaman and Lehmann both regularly had howlers capable of making their wives file for divorce on the grounds of embarrasment and bringing shame to the family name.

  76. @YW a la Chris

    I disagree.

    Fight fire with Fire.

have the chants against Wenger been proven then?

  77. Yogi’s Warrior

I aint saying taunt them back, I just think there is no place for that in football. That is a personal attack on Wenger, and I can’t understand why he doesn’t make a formal complaint about it.

There are millions of viewers listening to this crap, why should our children be asking us “Dad, what is a paedophile!?” It’s something that we shouldn’t have to hear on the tv from thousands of fans screaming it. IT IS WRONG what ever way we look at it.

They should be fined and warned regarding this behaviour, it has gone on long enough.

Why are we always the ones under attack

  78. I always wonder why there is a ‘comments section’, YW covers everything brilliantly and concisely.

There really is no need to comment except to say: fantastic.

    Fantastic.

  79. Oh well if it is just a mob behaving badly, CG, that is OK then. Abuse the guy and his family all you want if you are just a mob behaving badly. Don’t you go tripping over in the penalty area though or kicking an empty bottle becuase that is appalling behaviour.

  80. George E Graham

Peter Cech made 4 crucial mistakes in the space of a few weeks for Chelsea end of last season. I think Almunia is alot more reliable than Cech by a long way, what exactly is your agenda against Almunia?

  81. Arsenalkabisa

They haven’t and yet you give them credibility with your view.

    YW

  82. Referees, FA, SFA, UEFA, FIFA, Mancs and Celtic all look like the complete arseholes they truly are after the last weeks events.

  83. @Frank

Get some points deducted and those cheap shots will shut up

  84. FG – the reason we were screwed by Dean on Saturday was precisely because of the poor way we handled the PR on Eduardo.

The establishment always finds a way to exact retribution.

Of course, Dean being Dean, went so overboard to the extent that we’re now getting apologies from the FA and winning sympathy from certain elements of the, very fickle, media.

Arsene handled the PR on Saturday surperbly. But he made a dogs bollox of Eduardo debacle.!

    And what has happened since?

We’ve lost our unbeaten run and shipped 3 points to the mancs in a game where we were the better team.! Of course, if thats what you call a result…………

    Danny,

Not convinced about the defensive discipline being eradicated. We’ve still conceded against Celtic, Atletico, Everton, Pompey, Manu……..

And its something that’s been happening for a number of years now.

  85. @ george e graham

ITV and the rest of the media’s coverage, and referee himself are responsible for the shocking officiating on Saturday. AW did not create the media storm. He didn’t referee the match either.

His strong defence of his player and his inescapable logic, combined with new video evidence – some of it kindly supplied by various other players, is, I feel, turning the tide. If it doesn’t, more fool everyone else. It makes no difference to us – people were biased against us anyway, so what’s new.

The main point for me is that justice should be done. AW shouldn’t let UEFA get away with this, and he shouldn’t apologise for something he does not believe his player has done. It would not appease the baying mob, it would not be convincing and it would be betraying Eduardo.

    ****
    @ California Gooner

A crowd behaving badly? Hmmm – that’s how Spanish crowds justify their racist taunts. There are certain taunts which are unjustifiable. I think the Wenger one falls into that category.

  86. @ YW

not picking an Argument, just saying that what is source for the Goose should be for the Gander.

We have been giving the other cheek for too long. I want some Pitza on Rednose’ face.

We get fined while we were the better team, the team with less fouls…

    it doesn’t make sense.

We are talking on the football pitch. now we need to talk away from it too.

  87. You are a very weak man, Joe. If I may say so. Very weak indeed. It didn’t matter how Arsenal handled the situation, Celtic and the SFA wanted retribution and have political aims and the English press and media were happy to hang Eduardo out to dry becuase he is playing gainst their little darlings next week. I know you don’t understand this but in life you need to stand up for your own through thick and thin. The way through this is to develop a seige mentality not to capitulate. AW knows this very well indeed.

    …Arsenal….

  88. @ Joe

“the reason we were screwed by Dean on Saturday was precisely because of the poor way we handled the PR on Eduardo.

The establishment always finds a way to exact retribution.”

And if he had taken a conciliatory line and apologised as you suggested, Dean would have felt justified because Arsene had “admitted” that we are cheats. They just don’t like us and are out to screw us either way. This way, he has called their bluff and they will rue the day.

  89. @Trace

    are you Dean in Disguise?

  90. Trace.

I guess the ref having a good game depends on which side of the bread he’s bbuttering. So indeed, you are factually correct. He had a good game for Man Utd.

  91. Joe is a Manc scum

  92. @Joe

and why should he apologize when it wasn’t a dive?

  93. Does anyone agree with the often repeated statement that “United always find a way to win whereas once Arsenal goes down their heads drop” in other words does Arsenal lack bottle?

  94. Ref was man of the match for United… almost slipped Fergies tongue in the interview!

  95. @ wengerball

    No.
Unless by “finding a way to win” you mean “having the officials in your pocket”?

  96. wengerball

United always find a referee to help them win you mean?

  97. I heard man utd’s second goal was caused by poor communication between Diaby and Almunia. Diaby was waiting for a shout from Almunia to tell him whether to head the ball out of the penalty area or into his own goal. Either the shout never came or was not loud enough, and Diaby chose the wrong option.

  98. Football is such a strange place.

Three Arsenal matches after this one, and we will be the second coming of the Messiah.

    Fickle. Just Fickle.

  99. wengerball;

    Nope.

  100. Pz

    lol

  101. @CG and FunGunner

Why buy a player when you can buy a match?

  102. I don’t agree with the statement either, but I hear it from many “Arsenal” fans, It’s another example of now the media shape our opinions.

  103. One day Abou will laugh about that OG. Us too.

He’s already made telling contributions this season, and I expect this to be his breakthrough season. I love his high-risk, high-reward style.

Almunia has a significant number of MOTM performances in the last 2 seasons. George E Graham, on the other hand, has been given a free transfer over to Man Citeh as supporter-in-chief. He will have his own sealed box so no toxins can escape. I know this because I personally handled the terms of the transfer.

Bye bye George, so long … keep crowing, kraak, kraak.

  104. arsenalkabisa

    lol
I can’t believe Arsene hasn’t thought of that! Sack him!

  105. Im very much looking forward to Man City (a) in a couple weeks.

They aint exactly media darlings like ourselves so you would expect a rather neutral view from the referee of the game.

  106. arsenalkabisa

Maybe thats what we have been saving up for!!

  107. I think Diaby’s own goal was just bad timing on the header. He was going for power on the clearance but got his timing late, and hit the ball while bring his head back. That’s my theory.

  108. I blame Abou’s hair cut

  109. I distinctly heard Almunia shout “OK, si, si, no, no … a little more to my right” which Abou took to be ‘his’ right as of he was facing the goal.

Abou does not make mistakes, never has, never will; just a simple case of ‘my right or your left’.

  110. @CG

Toure is the Man C captain.

That game I want to see!! i have a feeling we will run out as riot winners. the media will read how Man C has not yet jelled, and how Lescot has distabilized the team by coming in…

  111. @Tracey

    This is football. Not Netball.

  112. IMHO I think AW has indicated that he does not have the faith in Almunia that he should have.

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/-we-were-the-better-team-and-lost-the-game-

“Football is unpredictable. I believe in this team we lack some calmness, maturity and experience when we were in moments where we were not under panic at all …”

  113. Trace, you need to change your name, serious fella, it does not become you. But on Diaby you obviously don’t know enough. Are you quite young? If not, give up this football malarkey. If you are, no problem, wise heads will help you.

  114. arsenalkabisa

I have the same feeling matey, not very often a Man Utd team gets battered on their own pitch. City will not see it coming also, they think they have learnt to play football over night.

They are a bit like Spurs right now, once they get that 1st defeat, they will drop down the table to where they belong.

  115. Trace;

I find your posts refreshing and insightful and not at all complete and utter bollocks.

  116. On another note – CC home draw again. Yay!!!
    I looooove that competition.

  117. Spike, you are a riot!

  118. earflow

he said that in reference to the whole team, Gallas should have screamed to Almunia that he had Rooney covered. Rooney was not going anywhere.

Diaby panicked, thinking he had enough power to loop the ball over the post.

Calmness was not just refereed to Almunia, but to the team as a whole. They should have started to close shop while we were 1 – 0 up.

Posses the ball and let them chase.

  119. arsenalkabisa

Leaving the individual errors aside we did close shop quite well. United didnt really have any clear cut chances. We had the best of the chances = Arshavin shot narrowly missing the top corner, Van Persie forcing the save from Foster, Van Persie hitting bar…

Just a shame we gave them the points, we had complete control over the game. Its what makes it worse as they didnt deserve to win.

Its very encouraging on our part for the season though. We could have found ourselves very easily 3-0 up at Old Trafford. What would the media have said then if fortune was with us?

  120. Joe,

Camera evidence has now confirmed that Celtic keeper Boruc did indeed make contact with Eduardo. I’ll send you the link to the articles which confirm this later today.

Please move on from the misconception that Eduardo dived, that Arsenal and Arsene could have handled the PR better and other tosh.

Your view does not stand up to scrutiny because the English media being what it is would have written and said what it did anyway. They do not let facts come in the way of a good story or a good agenda.

  121. Trace,

Your comments can be traced back to your buttocks am afraid.

  122. Alex

Well said, it is just pure fabrication and Arsenal bashing. I find it hard to believe that they were all devastated by Eduardo’s fall, when Rooney showed he can do it in much better style. Gerrard has perfected it, so too has Drogba. We just get found out because our players don’t know how to cheat. Maybe we should teach them properly!! haha

I think they were just shocked on the ease of Dudu’s fall where they aint use to seeing Arsenal players dive like that. Eboue is an exception of course till Saturday cleaned up his act alot!

  123. @CG

i agree. Almost like the moments of madness that Milan had against Liverpool those many years ago.

Some times maybe it just not your day. Even my Man U workmates are attributing it to Luck.

  124. Trace, when you say we, who are you referring to? The sorry spuds?

  125. @Tracey

you getting it in the ass too?

  126. Trace,

If you did watch last Saturday’s match with any degree of care, you would notice that any pissing if it did happen was from us on United’s bogus credentials as champions of England.

  127. Joe,

From a limited point of agreement your extra sanctimony has created a huge gulf in how you see it and how I do.

Eduardo dived. That’s how it seemed to me on Wednesday night. I agree with that. Denilson dived in the same game. I think diving is part of the game, and I think Eduardo will be singled out as he actually has.

That you can use that to justify a magnus opus in incompetent refereeing from Mike Dean is amazing to me.

Eduardo dived so Fletcher & Carrick foul at will and don’t get booked. A penalty as clear as any is not given. A manager is sent off for a brief act of frustration. Rooney’s dive is tolerated.

    Absolute bollocks.

  128. Haven’t read the comments as yet, but I just wanted to nip in and say how utterly funny Sixstay’s comments are.

    ‘Think outside the box’ hahahaha

I love the little riddles he/she keeps throwing in like he is really giving us an education. It is so funny.

I am surprised that many haven’t gone along with it.

Right, back to have a read. Have a great day Gooners.

  129. You know you must be doing something right when you limit the defending champions to three shots on goal, one of those being an own goal from your player.

You know you are doing something right when the Defending champions starts to hoof the ball forward to no one in particular.

You know you are doing something right when the defending champions require the ref to bail them out of a match.

you know you are doing something right when the defending champions can have any clear cut opportunities.

You know you are doing something right when a player who was bought for 200k out marks a 16M purchase.

You know you are doing something right when your player is fouled in the box, picks himself up and scores with his next kick

  130. Joe,

Fair enough Joe, as you say it has been happening for a number of years, so it will be harder for some to be convinced.

The difference as I see it, is they way our team looks more solid not shipping chance after chance for opposition teams.

As for the games you speak of, token goals conceded at the end of thorough beatings handed out are not the ones that have bothered us over the last couple of season.

Our inabilty to keep ourselves from being swarmed upon in the bigger games having often opened the scoring are.

The result on saturday is on thing, but the manner Manchester United acheived this, through essentially to freak instances and not sustained attacking that has blighted us in the past, gives me the belief we are where we need to be.

We will still lose big games and still concede goals. All teams do, even the trophy winning ones, but I do not see us doing this regularly now.

  131. Ole

The degree of diving is accpeted differently at certain clubs. Ive never known a diver being accpeted at Arsenal, Pires was a clever player that went down cleverly. The Mancs can argue the same for Ronaldo. They were just too smart on the ball for the opposition to gain possession off them. Theres only so many players you can go past before your legs give way.

Those trying to single out Eduardo still are just hilarious when they will admit to their own players diving for many years. Its a part of the game, the refs dont give a foul most the time if you dont go down. So what choice do the players have.

If Rooney hurdled Almunia and stayed on his feet instead of DIVING (yes it was a dive) then would there have been a penalty … NO

Rooney had no choice but to dive. So did Eduardo. The difference is Eduardo felt a clip on his right foot. You can even say Rooneys dive is worse as he went down before contact, he had no reason to go down in FACT.

  132. Danny

    Completely agree mate

We were the same team that beat Everton and Celtic, we put in a similar peformance, and United couldnt asnwer to it.

I actually thought we didnt play our best, and with a couple cooler heads in our team who can hold the ball (currently out injured) we would have had even more control on the game! Its just remarkable to have dominated a game so much against United, and I can see much more room for improvement. It shows how good our lads ARE right now, the team must be severely dissapointed right now, which is a good thing.

On another day we would have been 3-0 up. Arshavin narrowly missed shot, the penalty decision, Van Persie close range shot. … Even when he hit the bar!!

  133. ChrisGoona,

I agree completely. Unfortunately, even if contact wasn’t made he still wouldn’t have been called for diving. They’d have said he slipped.

  134. ZimPaul are you Zimbabwean?

  135. This diving business is a load of fuss about nothing. Poor refereeing is far more damaging to the game than ‘diving’. Trouble is UEFA and the SFA in their wisdom have just totally undermined the referee. Boruc goes out to simulate clattering into a player…Eduardo may or may not have dived in order to win a pen as a result…a game of brinkmanship. Referee can call it either way. Makes his decision. The result of the match is a fair one.

  136. @ Ole Gunner

I have to disagree with you – Eduardo has not been singled out because of the “dive”. He has been subsequently singled out because ITV, Celtic and the SFA made a big deal about the supposed dive. The fuss that has been made, combined with the latent hostility towards the club, is what has resulted in the scapegoating of our Crozilian.

The media tried to whip up a storm of controversy over the Arshavin transfer. That failed. Balked of that, they tried it again over Spitgate and ultimately failed after some initial success. This time they have succeeded.

Out of interest, what do you class as a dive? If there is contact, from a defender, however minimal, or if the player has to change direction or jump to avoid contact, surely that’s not a dive and could be a penalty, depending on whether the referee thinks the player would have had a good shot on, had it not been for the obstruction? Soft penalties are infuriating, but the rule as explained by Darius does at least mean that the referee doesn’t have to finely judge the exact degree of contact which constitutes a penalty, but can concentrate on the relative positions of the players and who is in control of the ball, etc – which he can judge far more reliably. What I call a dive is a Morten Gamst Pedersen. Or a McGeady. No one interfering with the player in any way, and he goes down deliberately.

  137. Smol – yes I yam. You?

  138. Born, bread and buttered as we say.

  139. So what was the refs excuse with the Fletcher clattering on Arshavin.

    * he didnt touch the ball
    * ohh wait he actually handled the ball
    * he went straight through AA
    * AA went down screaming in agony
    * Fletcher gets up surprised as shit

    …. ref … PLAY ON…!!!

fucking disgraceful how a ref can miss that, its not even excusable for the ref to say he didnt see it.. what is his excuse i wonder???

  140. FunGunner,

Good question. A dive is when you project yourself towards the ground, whether you were touched or not. My standard is whether you could have remained on your feet.

That Rooney incident, if it had occured in his own penalty area would have seen Rooney remain on his feet. Same way I see the Eduardo incident. He went down easily.

The worst diver in football is probably Steven Gerrard. Even more than Ronaldo the shemale impersonator. I am willing to take the likes of Ronaldo or Eboue going down. When you run at people at the pace those two do, a light touch can knock you down, plus from experience I know that players who run at people get kicked a lot.

Stevie G’s dives are the most cynical. Remember his dive against Atletico Madrid or Standard Liege last season. Liverpool were losing the game. Stevie G dived and they got a result where they never should have had one.

  141. I agree Fun. Darius’ definition is very helpful to the ‘debate’.

It doesn’t matter though. Eddy has already been declared guilty and the morons will be on his back for ever.

However, as an Arsenal player, he must be used to it.

We are on our own. We will do it for ourselves.
    We are The Arsenal.

  142. Ole,

You should know me well enough by this stage to at least afford me the respect of reading my contributions with a modicum of clarity for you have misrepresented what I said:

I do not, for one moment even begin to condone the disgraceful refereeing of Mike Dean. It was outrageous. The blatant AA penalty, Rooney’s simulation, the 5 yellow cards and the red card given to Arsene – were very difficult to take and devoid of rational explanation.

But do not tell me that the poverty of trying to excuse Eduardo’s blatant dive on his previous injury and the fact that Celtic were not even in the tie did anything at all to assuage the level of public discord over the issue.

In circumstances like this, you get no favours from the establishment. I said, in advance of the match, that if Eduardo was through one on one with the goalkeeper and he gets hauled down – what are the odds he’ll get a penalty?

But what Mike Dean did was unbelievable!

  143. We need a rules change. A dive should really get points, like in diving. The lesser ronaldo has some stunning dives, 9.5 stuff. Drogba too, quite outstanding on his day, falls like a sawn tree. Roon’s dives are flatter and less embroidered, but not bad for an oik.

  144. ChrisGoona,

One of the most ridiculous ideas that pundits and commentators have foistered on the public is that if you get a touch on the ball it’s not a foul.

The Fletcher foul on Fabregas at the Emirates last April was a penalty. There was absolutely no way Fletcher could get to the ball without clattering Fabregas who was in on goal. IT WAS A STONE COLD PENALTY.

It’s one thing, if you got the ball, and then knocked the man. But if you get the man to get the ball, that’s a foul. And even if you got ball and then man, it could still be a foul if you used excessive force.

  145. trace is just chase a skunk by any other name

  146. Th art of the dive is in timing and being ‘in control’ of the ball before falling. Some players with mor than a little justification will say “if you try to injure me, I will trick you”.

In general, the English game and refereeing standards are extemely poor and reward the ‘hard man’ attitude. Hence the controversy.

  147. ChrisGoona,

Agree wholeheartedly. The difference is at 1 nil up I was convinced we would score again to clinch the game, such was our superiority. it is still a bit of a surprise to me, that we didn’t.

Last season, in the big games you could feel the goals conceded coming as wave after wave led to more and more desperate defending.

United created very little and did not look like scoring till we were 2-1 down and chasing the game with the clock ticking.

If it were not for Gallas being marginally offside we would have got a richly deserved equaliser and yet still you would have felt United were lucky and got off lightly.

Overall, they won the game and took 3 points and fair enough. I felt other than the failure to award a penalty for the foul on Arshavin, the key match moments and referee decisions were about right.

So here we are, they have the 3 points but I am convinced what I have seen, is a team that will this season go and challenge the other contenders and do what previous great Wenger sides have done, which is through their superior technical ability, boss the game.

  148. ZimPaul –
    Yeah, living in sa now!

  149. Dissappointed with the result on Saturday but thought the performance was on the whole good. ManU could not cope with us and we were missing several creative players. Providing we can keep focused I think the outlook for the rest of the season is very good.

  150. Naah. That is absolute bloody nonsense again, Joe. You don’t win this by courting establishment opinion. The SFA and UEFA have very complex political and personal agendas. No point playing to the press and media either.

OG, I think your definition of a ‘dive’ is far too simple. It is not illegal for a player to go to ground. It is certainly not illegal for a player to go to ground whilst being tackled. A ‘dive’ is a deliberate attempt to fool the referee by feigning a foul. It is not possible to tell whether Eduardo was doing that or not. But it is possible to show that Boruc threw himself at the player deliberately intending to make him believe that he was either going to get hurt ot fouled. The referee got it right.

Which brings me to my last point…all of this is just about the quality of refereeing. Drive up the the quality of referees and all of this talk of retrospective action, video technology, extra officials disappears.

  151. “No one interfering with the player in any way, and he goes down deliberately.”

I agree that is a dive, however, going down under minimal contact what clever forward players do – pushing the boundaries, but not breaking the rules. Everybody hates it when it goes against them but they are glad to take the advantage when it goes for them.

  152. I agree with Marc

  153. I cannot see how UEFA can prove Eduardo simulated in an attempt to con the referee? It is impossible and already, one hack has bucked the ITV and Sky led trend in saying that there was contact. Therefore it aint a dive, case closed, bag shut.

  154. Damning stat: Last three meetings at Old Trafford Man Utd 48 fouls 5 yellow cards, Arsenal 44 fouls 17 yellow cards.

Says it all. Just says it all.

  155. “A dive is when you project yourself towards the ground, whether you were touched or not. My standard is whether you could have remained on your feet.”

I can see why you say that, but I think the reason why the rule is NOT framed like that, is, as I said, because it requires the referee to make a more difficult decision than the decision about whether the defender or keeper was obstructing the player while the player was in control of the ball. I don’t like players to go down too easily, either, but if the penalty decision isn’t based (as it would appear) on whether someone could have stayed on his feet or not, perhaps it’s not all that important. And if it’s clever to draw a foul and get a free kick outside the box like Denilson does, it’s clever to do it in the box – genuine fouls, of course.

  156. Courtesy Aphiss on Twitter.

  157. @ Spike at 2:30pm

Absolutely correct. Only one of the reasons why they will live to regret trying to single out Eduardo for special punishment.

  158. I think that the referees were correct in the Rooney incident and correct in the Eduardo one. Dean was also correct in the Eboue incident. The FAs are following their own agendas and I doubt it has anything to do with’diving’ at all. I would not be at all surprised to see Eduardo escape without sanction.

  159. @ Frank

I would not be at all surprised to see Eduardo escape without sanction.

Yes – they will wait till the furore has died down and then try to quietly drop it.

  160. I agree with Frank re. Scuba Dudu.

And I think we’ll win the league.

Truly AFC, Denilson didn’t turn up? I thought quietly effective, gave the ball away a few times, but anyway, am about to rewatch the game, thanks to this blessed new highlights option, so I’ll have another look.

Agree with OG that a Mart Poom type signing would do no harm at all, not to replace Almunia, but to keep him on his toes. Though I don’t think it’ll be long before Wojeck Sczechneyan makes the grade.

Shame about the points but nice to see us totally outplay the mancs.

  161. The FAs would do better to quietly set about improving refereeing standards. Ensuring that referees are well equipped to handle big matches. Referees should be approriately remunerated because good referees are worth their weight in gold. The SFA and UEFA have done a lot to undermine that process over the last few days and so there must have been a strong political motive.

  162. Frank,

Again, your comment leaves me chastised. I agree that even the threat of a foul can, to all intents and purposes, be a foul. Diving in my path when you have no chance of getting the ball can be a foul. I completely agree.

However, I still think it’s not right to go down when you can remain on your feet. That’s something you don’t see in Rugby or in American football, sorry to annoy you with the comparison.

But there’s a real point there. The laws of football or the interpretation of them might well have given players incentives to go down easily.

I felt Evra did the same thing Eboue did. The difference was that Gallas didn’t pull his leg back in fast enough which is what he was clearly trying to do.

  163. Danny

The referee missed a very very clear penalty, he got the Rooney DIVE/PENALTY spot on, I agree that was the correct decision.

But playing oblivious to many little fouls over the course of the game, booking more Arsenal players outstandling in the process!!?? We physically bossed the game once again, but we was not dirty in our tackling. I remember Denilson being booked for the slightest of pushes into Fletcher.

Some of their players were conceding 4 or 5 similar fould without warranting a booking, where as all we needed was 1 or 2.

On top of all them little decisions we had the big Arshavin decision, which for me could easily have gained a RED for Fletcher and he could have no complaints if he did and should have got. It was a cynical and dangerous challenge which could have done damage to Arshavin.

This is funny, but i bet if it was outside the box it would have been a freekick and a possible red card!!!!

  164. Ole

I agree with the Evra dive.

  165. There must be a minimum of 10 dives/play acting incidents per game in the average premiership game.

  166. Arsene, how did you see the penalty?

    AW: “Old Trafford-ish”

  167. I think we need a substitute left back. Eboue, defensively, is rather poor! Maybe wenger would get some youngster with good defensive ability, similiar to Gibbs?

  168. I agree wholeheartedly about improving the standard of officiating.

This has a been a timely reminder of the limits of video replays – multiple cameras give the illusion of panoramic vision, but people forget that cameras only record what they are pointed at, at any given time. It is possible to show conclusively that something did happen, but not that something didn’t happen – only that it didn’t happen from that camera’s POV, at the time it was recording.

I do think goal-line technology is needed, though. None of those reservations would apply to that.

  169. I think the job of referees has been made so much harder by the clueless ex-footballer pundits who do not know the rules and who pick and choose which incidents they decide to make into big deals.

They go on about consistency of ref’s decisions one minute, then say a player should’ve not been red carded and the ref’s should use common sense, as of that is a measurable yardstick for them to follow!

They are clueless, lazy and agenda driven, they all have personal favourites; teams and players and conversely teams they love to slate.

Yet they seen as authorities on the game, yet do not feel compelled to learn the basic rules of the game, or look in more depth than your average tabloid reading halfwit.

No wonder we end up with inept performances as we saw from Dean on Saturday.

  170. ChrisGoona,

Not disagreeing particularly. Thought Mike Dean’s performance was abysmal and that the opportunity to be the media darling and punish “cheating”, “foreign” Arsenal was something the little attention seeker could not pass up.

What I would say, is he is not why we lost the game, simply because two freak instances went against us.

Not a problem for myself though, as I was utterly delighted we had returned to being a team that can dominate these big games. Points will follow.

For this young team though, the feeling of ill-fortune and injustice having bossed one of these games rather than last season when they seemed positively chastised by the experience of playing bigger teams, can be the springboard to a convincing title challenge. They will take confidence and gain a little ruthlessness from the game. Those are the huge positives. I do not often feel this good in defeat, well never in fact.

  171. chrisgoona;

At least that amount. I am still waiting for UEFA to charge Ashley Young after Thursday night’s dives!

  172. Very true, Spike.

Examples are the “daylight” myth about offside decisions. Or the “intent” myth about reckless or dangerous tackles. People should read the rulebooks.

  173. FunGunner,

I agree that “if the penalty decision isn’t based (as it would appear) on whether someone could have stayed on his feet or not, perhaps it’s not all that important”.

I think players shouldn’t have to dive to get penalties. By the same token, a dive doesn’t mean it wasn’t a penalty.

I also think also that perhaps penalties shouldn’t be given if the attacker is going away from goal or has no hope of reaching the ball.

Vidic is the master of fouls in the box that are never awarded as penalties. One example is when he presses into his marker and holds on to them to prevent them from jumping well and having a good header. That is technically a penalty. It’s a foul.

@ Spike 2.30 PM. I was at the stadium on Wednesday night. Everyone around me (upper tier behind the goal where the incident happened) thought it was a dive. Didn’t stop us from joining in with the chants of E-dua-rdo, E-dua-rdo.

  174. sixtay;

You mean right back? I think Eboue is more than adequate cover there.

  175. Sixtay, Eboue is a perfectly good substitute leftback, as well as a being a talented midfielder.

Gavin Hoyte is the ‘some youngster’ you call for. A perfectly good subtitute, substitute leftback, who promises to be a fine player.

He is also quick as f*ck

  176. Sorry, OG, that was not my intention.

The ‘staying on your feet’ issue is an interesting one. There is no rule in football about going to ground…a player can roll about the floor giggling at an opponents ineptitude if they so wish and it is not illegal. This is not just about going to ground when tackled, there has also been much talk of tackles being fouls because the tacker went to ground lately as well.

I think all of this is a red herring. Managers don’t like players going to ground because it effectively renders them inactive and gives the oppsition an advantage.

At the moment we are suffering from rule overload. Every time a fuss is made about a particular element of play, then a new rule is imposed. Through this means we see that players are no longer allowed to slide tackle, or touch a player in the box, or tackle from behind or pass back to the keeper etc etc. This must stop. We don’t need new rules and we don’t need new technology. Football is beginning to lose its most precious asset…fluidity.

FAs around the world…Stop making new rules, stop pontificating, stop prevaricating and just train the fucking referees properly, please.

  177. I mean rightback.

    Sixtay, you’ve got me confused

  178. Let’s quite crying over spilled milk. Someone here said “Onwards and Upwards”, after the match! Why are we still discussing Man U??

    City awaits!

Personally I can see B52 taking advantage of Kolo’s obvious arial deficiency. Or Ireland being hassled off possession time and again!

Don’t know how we’ll fare against in form adebayor though. Has city been utilizing his arial ability, or are they being naive thinking they’ll become barca overnight?

  179. @ OG

We can certainly agree about Vidic!

  180. Ah! gavin…completely forgot him. But is he completely ready? With the complex movement our team employs nowadays, do you think he’ll hold his own? Not entirely convinced

  181. LimparAssist

Sixtay is like one of those swirling concentric line designs much favoured by 1960s big screen villains. Don’t spend too long staring at it or you just may find yourself strapped to a slicing machine in some rascal’s undersea lair.

  182. Nowadays it seems refereesdecide whether matches won or lost. The recent example of the Crystal palace incident and the latest where Ashvin was denied a penalty
shd make the FA sit up.No more relegating these guys.
Hit them where it hurts :in the pockets. Guidedlines shd be drawn up and a graded scale of punishement for errors be made known. Oh the good performers shd be rewarded with a bonus. Then we will see improvement in the referees.

  183. Fungunner;

    Hahaha!

  184. Some people are still fighting last season’s fights. Eboue is crap. etc. The game has moved on and left you behind. Even Arseblog is getting off Eboue’s back. Find another scapegoat. Start hating on a spud player…that might help.

  185. Hey Smol are you from ‘skies’ or bamba zonke Harare? I am up and down to SA (who isn’t).
I am from Vumba originally – like the misty rain.

Oh yes, Africa loves Arsenal – yes they do!

  186. He’s just misunderstood here.

  187. FunGunner, message received. Proceeding with caution.

Sixtay, No reason why Hoyte jr. can’t ‘do a Gibbs’. He has to mentally get over the City game last season, where he didn’t take his opportunity.

The complex movement of our team is nothing new, and echoes down through the reserves and beyond. There’s only so much complexity you can allow yourself as a rightback anyway, even at Arsenal, unless you’re Eboue…

We also have Kerrea Gilbert competing there too.

  188. I like that OG – adopt a spud player to hate! Or Manu, Chelsea etc … I have adopted Ballack. I hate the sod. He can’t play for crap. He’s thick. He has boils on his bum.

  189. “A dive is when you project yourself towards the ground.”

In that case, there are no dives. Either a player’s feet are off the ground, and he cannot project himself at all, or his feet are on the ground, and he can project himself in any direction except towards the ground.

  190. A ‘dive’ is australian for ‘Dave’ …

  191. Almunia had a shocking game on saturday, beginning to end.

The fletcher chance first half he should have dealt with earlier, but was timid coming off his line. He needlessly committed himself for the penalty, just made it easy for Rooney – had he stayed on his feet the striker would have had to do something useful which had been beyond him all game. The Diaby header was a farce, only he knows how he managed something so poor, but again the keeper had the deer-in-the-headlights look.

Almunia has moments of real quality, but seeing a guy who was captain on wednesday turn in such an insipid performance on that stage is worrying. Not leadership material on that proof.

We cannot afford our senior players losing their heads, or entering the pitch looking utterly unprepared for the task, not in a team this young.

The dive thing is all nonsense, as Frank said, high quality referees are the only way to get a fairer game. Just look at Dean, incompetent on his own and spoilt the occasion, so to his 4th official. Uefa have no interest in eradicating it, impossible anyway, and not worth the hassle.

Big game now against City, but of we win there all this furore will seem a long time ago. In the best possible scenario, we will look back on it as tempering the side mentally, just as the game with the Keown monkey-chop did to the invincibles. Lord knows we need our keeper to find some fight sharpish.

  192. Part of maturing as a young team is understanding that when you play at places like OT the calls aren’t going to go your way. Almunia should know better than to go sliding into Rooney like that. Arshavin should have gotten the call because that was blatant, but even then…you’ve got to know that the only way is to put the game out of the reach of the refs. As far as Diaby, well that’s what you get for trying to be bit too clever. That’s growing up…he won’t do that again.

We let ourselves get a little wrapped up in wanting the ref to come right. We should have focused a bit more and put our chances away. We dominated every facet of the game. It should have been 2-0 at the half and RvP should have scored but for a brilliant bit of luck for Foster. Stop looking for the refs to play fair, the game should have been well out of reach by the time Rooney went to ground.

    ****Bragging Rights Claim Helpline****

At Bragging Rights Ltd, we understand that it can be hard to get back to your normal life after a defeat to one of your biggest rivals. On top of points lost for your team, you may also have suffered loss-of-face at work or in your social life, and may even be down a few pounds.

Despite all the glitz of the Sky-era, football isn’t scripted entertainment. Things don’t always go to plan. People make mistakes, referees get it wrong and Wayne Rooney is a multi-millionaire.

It’s times like this that you wonder if you’re looking for fulfilment in the wrong places…

This isn’t the case, of course. You just need someone to blame.

This is why we have been working since November 2004 to help people like you claim the compensation you need to get back on your feet.

We are the most experienced vicarious emotional injury specialists in the UK and have helped hundreds of armchair managers by putting them in touch with our network of football pundits and experienced journalists who work hard and fast to discern just who is to blame for the defeat.

You don’t pay a penny for this service. This is because our specialists work on a NO SIN, NO FEE basis. If you find your scapegoat, you should receive 100% emotional compensation, and it will be left to the team you support to pick up the pieces.

Come on give us a call, so you can get off your backside and back in your armchair.

  194. While our constant refusal to ‘clear our lines’, and instead to pass out of trouble, often has me shouting ‘get rid!’ like a Sunday league Goalkeeper, I think when we tote up the goals conceded directly from a stubborn reluctance to hoof, and goals we score with the possession retained using the same policy – it’s a hugely profitable one.

I can’t think of another team (past or present) quite so devoted to playing in this revolutionary way. Arsene Wenger’s pure footballing ideals make me consistently proud to be a Gooner.

In 4-5 years time we will be as iconic as Brazil. This team has become, like Brazil, synonymous with fun, skill, beauty, enjoyment, teamwork and entertainment. Soon we will add ‘success’ to that list.

By winning and winning in the right way, we are set to become, with Brazil, the most popular team around the world. These qualities are universally attractive.

    Unlike Wayne Rooney.

Who was simply buoyant on Saturday. And Team Anti-Football (read Anti-Fun), who consistently indulge themselves in playing the villain.

They’re the team in black from Mighty Ducks. And we was robbed.

  195. My favourite dive is the one where the player rolls 9 times over and over writhing in agony frothing at the mouth and looking for all the world as if an instant epilepsy has struck or perhaps if a painful nerve has been severed, and then after the foul has been given and card issued trots away like the breath of spring joy.

  196. hollis, you aren’t seriously suggesting Almunia was at fault for Diaby’s own goal…are you?

  197. I’ve been reflecting on the events of the last week or so, in the context of the Arsenal journey over the last few years. I support the theory here that the answer to some of the matters we’re debating is better training and support for competency in good refereeing.

The crux of the issue of the events of the last week or so is that by arbitrary charging Eduardo with deception, UEFA have yanked the age old assurance that the decision of the referee is final. The finality of refereeing decisions is the basis of the fairness of any game, football or not, and it works on certain assumptions, the most obvious being that the referee is a competent individual.

Naturally, there will be decisions that aggrieve one party, but we hope that goodwill and sportsmanship will allow us to accept that the nature of the game is such. This also means that as fans, we have to accept that decisions like the many on Saturday, will go against us, but poetic justice will come our way soon enough.

However, by UEFA charging eduardo – fuelled by the bitterness of Celtic and SFA political masters, and driven shamelessly by the English media to support their own tabloid filling and air time drama agenda – it has blatently brought to light several things.

    1. The incompetence of UEFA officials in not following the due process of giving the match referee the benefit of the doubt. After the Celtic match, the ref confirmed that he did see the incident, and believed it was an infringement and therefore gave the penalty. Eduardo diving or simulating a dive (fill in the blank here with your preferred option) is incidental to the referee’s ability to look at the individual case, make a judgement and call for the penalty – and that should have been final.

    2. UEFA have opened a can of worms by allowing for the possibility of every single cheating offence that appears to deceive a referee and gives the perpetrator an advantage, to be brought to question. This isn’t only about simulation. If two opposing players go for a 50-50 at the touch line and a player who blatently knows that the ball went out of play off his body, yet raises his hand and shouts “ball ours” – is deceiving the referee and if the decision goes their way, the crime is no worse than what Eduardo is charged with. Take your pick about other incidents of pushing and shoving, shirt pulling, professional fouls to intentionally disrupt an attacking move, etc…all these are cheating by definition of deceiving another party, including fans of the game who have paid to watch a fair and in our case, a mostly beautiful game.

    3. Charging Eduardo arbitrarily with deception so as to appear to do something because the media demands that you do is a stupid move that has been executed with spectacular and breath-taking incompetence. It’s clear that there’s an element of politics in here, and latching on to such an incident for the political masters trying to make hay from it is just plain stupid. The referee’s account of the incident will have to be taken into account, so is the impossible task of proving intent on the part of Eduardo, and both of these will at the least- make it difficult for the charge to stand, let alone the fact that there was contact between Boric and Eduardo (as proven by recently available footage).

    4. The events of the last week, I believe are a watershed moment for Arsenal football club and the realisation of the long awaited maturity of this squad – essentially turning potential into champions. This is the proverbial trigger to help cement that very elusive team spirit and togetherness within the squad, able to give them the maturity to take advantage of the seige mentality and anti-arsenalism to show the world that the faith put in them is not misguided. The talent in this team is unquestionable, we only await it’s revelation in it’s true glory.

Arsenal will only benefit from the furore of the last week or so, and the game at Old Trafford will only serve the purpose of reminding the team about the nature of the adversity they face when they have to take over the mantle of champions. Nobody, let alone Man Utd, will easily give up the mantle of champions and it has to be taken away from them, kicking and screaming.

As much as we’re frustrated about the result and the indifferent refereeing decisions that turned the game against us, we can learn from Saturday and accept that we were good enough, but to be champions, we always have to fight against adversity, whether its the opposing supporters, the biased referees, or a team hell bent on kicking us out of the park. Champions know how to adapt and overcome such adversity. As Sean Connery famously said in the movie The Rock – “Losers whine about doing their best, winners go home and fuck the prom queen”.

Finally, food for thought for Arsenal supporters around the world. There have been ups and downs over the last 5 years as Wenger has built this team. Some fans still don’t understand that by building a new stadium, we have shackled ourselves with financial commitments that mean that this youth development policy or project is the only viable option we have for competing now and in the future, and success comes with patience.

Granted, we all get frustrated when things seem to be going wrong, and this is exacerbated by the misguided notion that a sugar daddy with a limitless amount of money is our answer. It might buy us a quick trophy, but its not sustainable.

Many of us have wondered whether this youth development project will ever work or come to fruition, and whether we should cut our losses by shipping Wenger out and getting in a sugar daddy with enough money to buy a galactico team. Inevitably, many people have wondered when exactly, this team will mature and start taking their place as champions elect and eventually worthy champions at the end of the season.

A certain former CEO (whom I will not mention by name here as it might dilute the point) once famously said when asked “When you say that you want your company to be the greatest and most powerful company in the world, how will we know when you’ve achieved that”. His answer was as revealing as it was breathtaking as he responded “It’s like pornography, you’ll know it when you see it”.

We’re seeing this team mature into champions right in front of our eyes, but some of us are too busy fighting the battle against Wenger’s youth policy, we don’t even know what success looks like any more.

The time for this team is now, they know it, and we should too. They’ll do their part on the pitch, that is not in question based on the evidence so far. It’s time for us as fans and supporters around the world to do the same by doing our part and start behaving like we support champions.

Kudos to the away fans, never disappointing, and for those attending match days at the Emirates, let’s continue to show the boys that we know they’ve arrived. Let’s be the voice and inspiration that pushes them over the line.

  198. Come on Pz, you know what I was trying to say. If you project yourself off the ground, you’re going to fall back on the ground. Like they do in that olympic sport.

  199. The Man U match and the outcome is the kind you would hope to follow with another home game against Pompey. Hopefully the team’s able to recover better than I have, as we can’t afford to be sleepwalking at City after having the breath punched from our guts this weekend.

What’s hilarious (and by hilarious I mean angering me to the point of murderous rage) is that I still see more Eduardo stories today than I see anything negative about other factors lending a hand in the result of our Saturday match. I guess this is akin to the way it is here in the Midwest; for sports coverage, whatever happens in New York and Boston is the only thing that matters, and any place else will be given a headline if they do something not to the East Coast’s liking.

Well, hopefully two weeks is enough time to find a therapist.

  200. Fletcher should be retrospectively banned for being such a f*cking thug.

Just me or is Arshavin looking a bit fat? Until the goal he really wasn’t playing well either.

  201. No gris-gris, the diaby own goal was probably the worst i have ever seen, completely unfathomable. However, there was no call, it was a ball almunia easily could have taken himself – it was what you would expect from mannone, or some youth, not an experienced head, sometime captain, who is in theory a leader on a young team. Bad display all game, that is all, and whilst he cant be blamed a keeper having a good game would have taken charge of the situation.

  202. Lol, Zp.

  203. Either he can be blamed or he can’t be blamed.

  205. If Almunia had known Diaby was going to put the ball in his own net, I’m sure he would have been more eager to claim it. He probably expected a professional footballer to be able to direct a header with a tolerance of significantly less than 180 degrees.

  206. I will have to disagree arsenehollis. You won’t see many keepers coming out to claim a ball that is going into an area with only their own players standing around and no opposition. It’s a routine header and clear 99.9% of the time for the defense and a situation every keeper would love. Diaby just had a brain cramp. I would expect Cech, Van der Saar, Given, Casillas, Buffon, and just about every other keeper in the world to let that one go. I can understand a little bit your argument that a keeper who was feeling imperious would have taken it but you’re guilty of judging the past through the prism of the present.

  207. California Gooner

Frank and Fungunner, I fell asleep after posting the comment on Man U fans actually admiring Wenger… but your points are well-taken.

It seems that what you all are saying on the issue of diving is that it is difficult because, as the current interpretation has it, if the player can some how sucker the defender into contact it usually isn’t considered a dive. I’m reading you right, Frank, if I think you believe this to be incorrect and that a dive should be called a dive regardless of whether contact is made?

  208. Polizano, he had a bad game start to finish. Watching the ball float into his own goal didn’t look out of place, even if it wasn’t directly his fault. The guy was shambolic on the day, not projecting it any further than that, but it is a fair assessment.

Playing Eboue was a gutless move, half-hearted. They were there to be beaten and we should have gone to win the game.

  209. Gris-gris – maybe you are right, perhaps that is harsh, still had a shit game and looked scared throughout though.

  210. arsenehollis

What the fuck are you chatting about? Playing Eboue was a gutless move???

    What does that mean?

  211. Bragging Rights Ltd

Yeah, how half-hearted to play Eboue after his motm performance against Celtic.

  212. Bragging Rights Ltd

Lost a post YW. It’s probably because it resembles spam – which shows that not everything’s good in moderation.

  213. Hahahaha @ “He probably expected a professional footballer to be able to direct a header with a tolerance of significantly less than 180 degrees.”

  214. Bragging Rights Ltd

Why can’t people put this match in the “sh*t happens” column?! Team selection and performances were absolutely fine, it’s just that chance… happendeth.

  215. You’re right BRL, but when it comes to Arsenal and alleged Arsenal fans, they will not rest until they find someone to blame. We lost, player X (select your favourite scapegoat) must be at fault.

  216. Where the hell is Yogi when you want him to unmoderate you?

  217. You can’t fault Wenger for starting Eboue. You have to be extremely disappointed in Eboue’s dive, though, particularly given that this was the first match following Eduardo-gate. It obviously played no role in the outcome, but it just doesn’t give me confidence in Eboue’s self-awareness.

No scapegoats on Arsenal from this fan. Bad luck, of course, and not unlike the kind of bad luck with the Gibbs slip and the Ronaldo dive/freekick goal in last year’s second leg CL Manure matchup.

  218. @ bragging rights

is niklas a better winger or eboue
and what if we were leading 1-0 on 80th minute
we wud had no defensive substitutions left

imo arsene shud have played nb or edu instead of eboue nad left eboue for defensive cove( injury /substitution)..

  219. ah ah Arshavin Arsenals greatest goal machine

I couldnt believe the decision to play Eboue instead of NB52.Eboue brings nothing to the table.A good performance at home to a very poor Celtic side does not compare to playing the champions at OT
Just look at eboue’s miss at the far post when we were 1-0 up.NB52 would have buried it.The selection of Eboue was a backward step.

  220. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Sorry, in a rush…

Exactly, Passenal. That’s precisely what I wanted to say in my lost post. Of course, the media obliges, pinpoints the scapegoats and the knives come out. Football isn’t scripted entertainment… there doesn’t always have to be a villain, and things don’t always go to plan.

As for Eboue, I read this in a comments section somewhere: In the games since the Eduardo incident we’ve seen that most professional footballers are divers (see Evra go towards Gallas to get contaxct on Saturday), but Eboue’s just terrible at it, which is actually kind of charming.

  221. Bragging Rights Ltd

Oh, and f*ck off, PSB. Everyone’s on to you.

  222. Almunia is the weaker link in our current defensive set up. Arsene’s confidence in this average GK is really amazing. He was not a regular GK anywhere he played. Celta Vigo, Recreativo etc. He came to a top European club and his medoicrity has been showing season after season. Reina, Freidel, Given, Cech, Van de Saar are all better GK’s than him.

He hasn’t played for Spain and may never do that in his footballing career. Take Almunia out and replace him with Boruc or Jensen of Burnley and we have a title winning team.

We had top GK’s before, Seaman, Jens, Jennings and now Almunia? Fabianski, Mannone, Szceczesny will never learn anything from him.

  223. Manchester Utd have won 4 penalties in Arsenal’s last 7 visits to Old Trafford….from Opta on Twitter.

  224. Apologies to those that have already seen/read this. You really couldn’t make this stuff up:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/aug/30/hibernian-celtic-mcgeady-red-card

    It’s Eduardo’s fault. Brilliant.

  225. Maturks

That is hilarious. You were joking right?

    Fatty Boruc??? Jensen???

VDS of United is possibly the worst keeper United have had since Taibi, Friedel is average and ancient, Given is a decent shot stopper and cech has been error prone for some time now.

But its usual for fair weather, simple minds to slate your own and elevate the talents of opposition temas’ players.

    Ususal, nut still complete bollocks.

Desist or fuck off, your choice

  226. Apologies for the typos.

  227. Maturks, just the fact that you’re comparing Alumunia to Given, Cech, Reina, and Van der Saar tells me what you think of his quality, even if you can’t bring yourself to say it!

You try getting playing time behind Casillas (in my opinion the best in the world at the moment) and Reina. How much playing time does Fabregas get? Does that mean he is the weaker link in our lineup too? How about Clichy? He doesn’t get much time with the French national side, that must mean he has been the weak link in our back line.

  228. Spike, I actually rate Boruc and Given quite highly. Cech is clearly past his prime I think and Van der Saar is getting close.

  229. Ok, everyone time to wrap it up, and move on.

    Please state your conclusions,

    Did Eduardo dive?

And is bragging rights, right about putting the OT game, in the “Sh*t Happens” column?

  230. I’m telling you Ole G, the Manc v Arsenal kick off at Old Trafford should start with a penalty kick for them…make it easy on every one.

I’m not sure why this unprecedented hatred against a club (Arsenal) from all sides? Is there anything in our long history to make the FA, Referees, Media, Pundits…hate Arsenal this much?

What is it? I really want to know

  231. Yes.

  232. I was talking to Ateeb.

They can’t stand class. That’s for you G4E.

Did you know that someone else uses your name over on Untold Arsenal by the way?

I knew it wasn’t you as he couldn’t actually write a proper sentence.

  233. Spike are you happy with Almunia? Yes he did well in the CL semi at Old Trafford and then what?

Ronaldo’s 41 yards free kick amazingly beat him.

Bentyley’s 40 yards speculative long ball beat him.

    The Aaron lennon’s tap in.

Portsmouth cheap goal scored by Kanoul.

Celtic goal due to poor positioning.

Allowing Rooney to justify his dive.

He was a contributing factor to the 37 goals we conceded last season and was also at fault with many of the goals we conceded in 2007/8 season, when we were trying to win the championship.

I have my doubts if he’s capable of doing what Seaman and Jens did for us.

Will Spain ever pick him? I doubt because both Reina and the Real’s GK are better and younger, so no chance.

He’s better than Fabianski though but as Arsenal don’t we deserve better?

  234. Gris Gris;

I think Given is a decent keeper, but Boruc has made some comically bad mistakes and for me, is very ropey.

Even the mighty Casillas has made huge errors. Happens to EVERY keeper.

  235. Hi CBob, thanks for the info. I wish I can register the name, but I can’t. πŸ™‚ I will check him/her out though.

    Off to untold arsenal….

  236. Maturks…your comments leave me speechless. I am in awe.

    Ateeb: Yes

This week’s sign the apocalypse is upon us: while attending my local MLS “soccer” match yesterday I noticed that of the four mascots the team has (don’t ask, this is America) has the name “Marco Van Bison” and is a person dressed in a bison costume.

  237. Arsenal deserves better than shite supporters like you mate.

Scapegoaters are incredibly sad, immature, piis poor human beings. Waiting for an excuse to crawl out the wood work and slate players thay they simply hate and try and find evidence to make it seem, they are using logic, when all it ever is, is bile and hatred.

You only goin back 2 seasons? Why not more? I am sure you can find a few more examples.

  238. Spike, agree. And that is the essence of being a keeper. When you make a mistake the result is usually a goal against. That is why I think it is folly to go down the path that Maturks has chosen.

  239. “I will check him/her out though.”

That sounded like a threat. What’re you planning?

Good we can all agree with big Al then. F*** it.

Adebayor and Kolo next up. That would be interesting. And offcourse, Sixtays suggestions for the next game would be welcome. He’s been excited about it for a while now.

  240. Check out the comments on ‘Hounding the Arsenal’, G4E. Near the top.

  241. But he/she is GE4….Gunner ever 4? I can see now why you said can’t put a sentence together CBob πŸ™‚

No threats Ateeb, just checking out…that’s all.

  242. Maturks is another of Howard’s disguises. I remember that avatar well. Howard used that when he came on here as Patrick.

Even if the avatar was not recognisable, the language and same old point about Almunia not being an international gives Howard away.

  243. A few days ago, QoS made a few typing errors and blamed it on her nails. Since then, other contributors – usually accurate typists – have started to make mistakes. Has QoS alerted the gentle folk of ACLF to a new fashion?

  244. ah ah arsehole

What about Clichy? He made a few fuck ups too last season. Maybe we should ditch him too? Then there’s Gallas, he wasnt up to it last season early doors, vermeallen? Thats not fair, he’s only been here 5 minutes, how am I expected to find something to slate him for? I will have to go thru some old Ajax games to find some errors from him.

  245. How come some of our fans can’t take pride in a great performance at Old Trafford despite the defeat and everything else that went against us?

Your manager stood bravely in the middle of 75,000 strong Mancs despicable mob in defiance and would not surrender to everything that went against us in this game.

    Why can’t you learn?

So what if Almunia maybe made a mistake…the Ref also made a huge mistake by giving a fake penalty and not giving a clear one at the other end.

I’m proud of the team & manager in this game, and very proud of a 22-23 years old midfield who controlled the game and were unfortunate not to crown their performance with a win. I’ve never felt at peace with myself after a defeat – especially to the Mancs – but this one, I know we played very well while understaffed and without Fabregas.

So, I’m proud of you Arsene and Arsenal..I’m behind you all the way and hope your defiance against our enemies will stand at the end of the season but with the title in your hands…this time you’ll be surrounded by thousands who love you and love Arsenal.

  246. My excuse is that I am getting used to my new keyboard, which borrowed from a footpainter friend of mine. Each key is three inches square, the keyboard lies on the floor and you operate the keys with your toes. Not going badly but I keep fucking up when I have to press the shift key and a character key simultaneously.

    Yes, Ateeb.

  247. It is sad that even the usual suspects in the football press are more positive and upbeat about Arsenal than some of the so-called fans.

  248. Wish we didnt have these boring international breaks to deal with! here to hoping on players come back safe and sound.

We have a wonderful team, no additions needed as long as we can stay healthy and I believe this year we will.

We are head and shoulders above the rest of the teams, believe it, and its just the tip of the ice berg. Many will be astonished at how good we will be by the end of the season. I truly believe we are better than Barca and RM even with their big money signings.

This will be a season to remember for us!

Keep the faith and be supportive of our team.

    God bless!!

  249. Looks like Tomas Rosicky will be playing for the Czech Republic before he does for us this season.

Fingers and everything else, crossed then.

  250. No signings no title.

  251. poor dan!

  252. Darius

Down the pub, enjoying the Bank Holiday sunshine. You’ve been unmoderated now.

    YW

  253. LOL Paul N..Another poor character of Les MisΓ©rables.

  254. dan – on your birthday card?

  255. Will people please lay off Manuel ? Ofcourse he has made a few mistakes.. am getting sick of certain people adding up his ‘mistakes’.

Remember all the amazing saves, the excellent distribution ? No..exactly.

Fact is, he didn’t actually let a goal in at all. Shrek dived, and Abou went weird – am weary of this (as Passenal said earlier) need to blame X –
    SUPPORT!!!!

Also, Tony Mowbray – good man, typically taken out of context in that Guardian article. He’s actually been a defender of Eddy, in his way (treading a delicate line between alienating the hoops and being his usual honest self) he was talking about the media hype, ffs!

  256. “This is Newcastle 2001; this is van Nistelroy 2003; this is Agincourt, goddamit.

From the neo-Marxist control freaks at UEFA to the xenophobic fat-heads across this island, an undeniable truth still emanates:

    THEY FRICKIN’ HATE US

They hate our squad’s unnationalistic meritocracy, they hate our bargain-hunting, our absolute refusal to budge from the top echelons of European football in spite of spending sweet FA on players year in year out.

And moreover, they hate the designer, the architect of all this – Wenger.

Which is good, because I fucking love Wenger.

So they can fuck right off.”

    From Gingers For Limpar

  257. G4E. Whats happened to your monicker?

Excellent post at 6.28 by the way.

    Bank Holiday sunshine?

We haven’t seen the sun In Devon since June. I exagerate not.

  258. Are you a ginger then Limpar?

Never mind. You said it very well. I love the man too.

    God Bless You, Arsene.

  259. Come here to AZ CBob…we will give you some sun…it was like 115 over the weekend.

  260. 115? geez, do you go oustide?

Its was in the low 100’s a few weeks back in houston, madness!!

  261. We played an excellent game. No argument can be made there. Almunia…well he forgot he was at OT for a sceond there, and Abou…well I don’t know what happened there, but else we were great.

  262. We have bearly touched the seventies this summer and the rain!

  263. I don’t go out Paul N…from the house, to the car, to work and back πŸ™‚

It’s been so hot this year here in AZ

  264. why oh why did we have to crack, i was so happy

  265. You know, I’m glad this happened now truthfully.

Young players…call it lesson learned about winning (especially away from home.)

Our lads have learned the game, passing, tactics, movement and it’s all starting to click now. The only thing standing between them and trophies; the last part to learn is the game within the game. The things that make you a wily old professional.

Abou: Safety first…no need to be cute or clever.

Almunia (and to the whole team): You know the refs aren’t going to be on your side…extra careful, extra precise, no risks.

Strikers: Be Clinical! Put the game beyond the refs influence.

Follow Arshavin’s example: Don’t let injustices get in your head…bury your chances. Expect to be hard done by. We know they don’t want us to win.

[I feel truly for RvP…between Evra, Foster, and the woodwork RvP was denied a hat-trick!]

  266. Some jokers on Wikipedia have posted the following entry on Marouane Chamakh’s page:

“It has been concluded that a deal worth in the region of Β£7.8 million has been made by Arsenal F.C. The player has agreed personal terms and will sign a 3-year contract with Arsenal F.C. Chamakh will wear the number 25 shirt”

  267. Muppet,

Being a registered editor of Wiki on Football, cricket and tennis, I have just changed the 7.8 million bid into a 78 million bid. There, now the entry is more realistic.

  268. Excellent ! Change his height to 6ft 10 as well.

  269. Just did. Actually I just rounded it off to 7 ft to give Crouch a complex. Now all the fans who said we were a team of midgets cant complain anymore.

  270. 1 loose cannon

Alex did you write this quote as well apparently from Chamakh. its bull:
l ‘I would love to join Arsenal, I need them and they definitely need me. Apart from Arshavin they are lacking in players of my ability’

  271. Yes. 1 loose cannon, somebody is obviously having a laugh.

  272. Ha ha, no 1 loose cannon unfortunately I cant take credit for that little gem of a quote.

  273. Wikipedia is a joke. Somebody has inserted the words under the Blaise Matuidi page:

    “Cats like tuna”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaise_Matuidi

    Under the paragraph Troyes.

    wtf !?

  274. 1 loose cannon

Ha ha Blaise Matuidi’s cuerrent club it says Arsenal. Check it out.

  275. Does the transfer window slam shut today?

  276. 1 loose cannon

    “Current club”

  277. Chamakh, Matuidi……You working on the transfers Muppet?:P

What’s Arsene upto, any inside information you’d like to share with us? I knew that whole scouting network was a hoax. They Wiki it on transfer day deadline.

  278. Dont say that Ateeb, I am a former scout of Arsene for Asia Pacific. I was entrusted with finding the Sachin Tendulkar of football or the Wasim Akram of football but came up empty handed. I am now a wiki editor.

  279. Nothing to do with me Ateeb !

I’m just intrigued. Sky are probably running some hysterical countdown of the transfer window, and I too am becoming needlessly hysterical by looking up what is going on. As it stands, Arsene is probably reading the newspaper and catching up on some match in La Liga or the Bundesliga.

  280. You’d wonder if it was still possible to improve our team signing wise without harming the awesome team chemistry now. Maybe another youngster!

  281. I agree with Sixtay though he is being sarcastic.

  282. Fair enough, muppet πŸ™‚

Transfer countdown, would be surprised if Chamakh didn’t move anywhere or didn’t sign an extention. One of the two, is likely to happen.

Alex, we’ve got the Wasim Akram of football, Carlos Vela!! Sadly injured for now. Big season for him.

  283. Vela is like rocisky innit, weak boned and feeble, we cannot rely on him innit

  284. Is there anyone out there called marcus who isnt a cunt?

  285. Oops, slip of the erm, finger there.

  286. No problem Spike. Its the freudian slips I’m wary of.

  287. Uefa tells Arsenal there can be no plea for mercy over Eduardo

    http://www.myfootballnews.co.uk/news_jump.html?team_id=1&story=15064

  288. Alex,

I’m not being sarcastic. A jack of all trade attacking player. Someone similiar to Kalou, but FAR less popular, would do the trick for me. Maybe some super-hardworking player like tevez or kuyt but awful on the ball, yet brilliant of it, for those games away against the buildup merchants like barca, recently Chelsea, and maybe roma.

  289. So much for hoping, Alex.

I’d stick with players who are brilliant on and off the ball, Sixtay.

  290. we need chamakh innit. He’s a good player and will strengthen us innit. He maybe shite but its worth the risk innit

  291. 1 loose cannon

    nah, innit ?

  292. That’s okay Kitchen Sink, we’re not looking for mercy, we’re looking for justice!

  293. 1 loose cannon

yeah but yeah but we don’t need him , Innit?

  294. Sixtay,

Someone who is spectacularly unpopular and awful on the ball but super hard working. Hmmm.. I think you mean Robbie Savage innit?

  295. “I’d stick with players who are brilliant on and off the ball, Sixtay.”

Yeah, but we often see strengths and weakness balance out. The truth is focussing on technique frequently results in a disregard for the physical and mental side of the game. We have no insanely athletic player ATM. For the sake of more options, when defending is of greater importance, can’t we strengthen in that department. Before Man U most people said we only played well because our opposition were shite. Truth is, WE MADE THEM play shite by Destroying their gameplay. Think of it as the flipside to creativity. I’ll coin it, DESTRUCTIVITY!
We need an “Attacking” player adept in Destroying opponents play, he can just support the better technical players when we have possession!

  296. we do need him though innit, if arshavin gets injured we could use the cover innit, chamakh could be shite but could be good innit

  297. Marcus, you are one of the more freqeunt callers on Talk shite innit?

  298. And sorry for posting late again…My side of the planet really!

Also, the kind of player I described usually cost pennies because ppl tend to focus on goal scoring, dribbling attackers. If only Robbie savage was as fast as theo and as clean on the tackle as denilson. ‘t be marvelous really.

  299. I call dem sometimes innit, to talk about chamakh and arshavin innit

  300. Marcus, am sending you an invoice for my future medical expenses.

  301. Marcus -don’t go out you will get a “booz asbo” its the new law.

  302. yeah, but no, but yeah, but no, but yeah, but no…innit

  303. But the problem is does such a player exist?

  304. send dat to me innit, i’ll sort dat out for you and rosicky innit

  305. on a more serious note. I am fully expecting uefa to suspend Eduardo for two matches. It will be insane but then again uefa is insane and belongs in lockup. words can’t express how disgusted I am with the governing bodies of the game I love. The whole lot of them should be shipped off to the MLS and made to parade around in mascot costumes hugging small children and doing silly dances at halftime.

  306. Marcus, I’m sure they’re a lot of websites more accepting of ur talents. I’d hate to see it all go to waste. That’ll be just unfortunate innit?

  307. I think Marcus has something “in-it” that’s bothering him.

  308. sixtay what you mean innit?

  309. G4ever- ha ha ha, it needs taking out soon

  310. I agree with Gris Gris…those freaking idiots are ruining the game.

What’s sad is, it feels like footballers don’t really know how to do anything beside playing football, so when they retire they can’t even run the game in a proper way…I think we need people from outside the game to run it fairly and properly.

  311. Diaby is good in the air innit

  312. Why take it out…let it be, he will eventually run out of air and suffocate.

  313. Sixtay,

Can you please name some websites more accepting of Marcus’s undoubted talent? We need a solution to this pronto. My heart may not last long at this rate innit.

  314. Ade wont score for city innit

  315. G4E,

That is a good point about footballers. The better manager’s, administrators and executives all seem to come with minimal or not notable football experience.

Hearing the opinions of even footballing greats like Pele, Platini and Maradona seems to confirm this. Exceptions like Cruyff and Beckenbauer exist but seem to be in a minority.

  316. Alex yeah but yeah but Marcus, will suffocate soon innit?

  317. Does anyone know when the transfer window closes? Tonight midnight or tomorrow 5pm?

  318. WHY WON’T WE LET THE EDUARDO, MAN UTD ISSUES GO! Is it really worth our while? Would arsene wenger be the world class coach he is if he dwelled on the past instead of learning from it and focussing on avoiding it in the future?

Are we really home and dry as regards the premiership? Some here seem to thing we are. Is there really NO positive addition that can be made to improve the teams chances?

Is our injury crisis fate, or a direct result of something we’re doing wrong?

Is our lack of composure when going down 1-0 REALLY down to inexperience, or are we poor at overloading a deep defense, something liverpool seem to excel at?

If we meet barca in the UCL, will we be guilty of showing too much respect like we did man u?

Will diaby be better off because of his own goal, or will he run into his shell and die like Big phil?

We need to consider these first as they seem more important than referees and what not!

  319. Exactly Alex, footballers who can contribute to the game after their playing days are none existent these days.

I thought it will be 5pm tomorrow Mean Lean.

  320. Good to see that AFC have submitted a strong defense of Eduardo to UEFA. It may not make a difference to those mugs though.

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/aug/31/eduardo-arsenal-celtic-diving-allegation-uefa

  321. Plus why is S. Platter has been the FIFA president for 500 years? Is there nobody else better than him? Where is the democracy?

No one ever, anywhere or in any position should hold it for more than two terms. Give a change to other people with new ideas.

  322. For marcus, I’d sy fml (f*ck my life). Seem’s he needs a bit of picking up. Or shut ur computer and go to a titty bar or something. Now that’s adequate use of ur talent right there.

We see ppl like you all the time on ACLF, incapable of adding constructively to the discussion, yet wanting to be noticed. Wellm u’ve got ur wish, we’ve noticed ur acting rather immature…you’re better than that!

  323. – change
    +chance

  324. Arsene got lost on the stands innit

  325. Does anyone think that the attacks on eduardo are all smokescreens to real issues?

Is eduardo a subset of the bigger picture?

Is it possible the targets are really Arsenal and Croatia?

Luka Modric just got his leg broken recently. Coincidence?

  326. Well Marcus now I’m just plain impressed. I haven’t actually seen a more persistent character.

    almost typed “innit” myself! lol

  327. *Rewind button.. play button*

Does anyone know when the transfer window closes?

    *stop*

  328. the constant refreshing is getting to me? how can I set it to refresh itself periodically

  329. Now I know Mean Lean doesn’t read my comments πŸ™‚

  330. I believe the transfer window shuts at 17:00 tomorrow. Which is good, no wasting my time sitting up ’til midnight this year.

  331. “THE summer transfer window is well underway with some huge transfers already completed.
And you can follow every team’s moves with our club-by-club guide below.

So keep coming back to this page to check out all the transfers before the September deadline day.”

The above is a quote from the Sun….not sure if they made that up or not.

  332. I said does anyone know when……. πŸ˜€

    Thanks G4E,

That will teach me to rush through the posts, my mutitasking skills are not too great.

I just thought I heard something about transfers outside of the Prem being midnight and prem transfers tomorrow at 5pm

I didn’t quite hear it as I had my little Son having a tantrum at the time.

  333. G4ever- that thing has not suffocated yet.
Sixtay- errors will creep up from time to time and that is normal I can assure you Diaby is not going to score an own goal every game. The errors we made in the manure game were down to the players really want to do well and not down to weaknesses . Diaby decided to flick the ball to Almunia because the Manure players were around the box like hyenas waiting for that loose ball he just wanted to be safe but unfortunately it did not work out. It wasn’t What we call bread and butter defending which is kicking the ball as far away as possible from the goal, I’m glad this has happened early in the league and not in a CL final or a crucial game so we have the time to rectify it .

  334. it will…just be patient 1LC

  335. hey G4E that new U really suites you..

    sixtay 10:54

there is only the illusion of coincidence..

  336. Thanks KS…I like me too πŸ™‚

  337. This is Wrighty’s article title in the gutter press “SO a few weeks into the new season and the secret to beating Arsenal is out”
It is a shamful article from a man played for Arsenal he sounds just like Alan Hansen. He really does not like Wenger or simply want to sound like Alan Hansen to make few quids. he suggests in his article that the answer is to bully the Arsenal players he also suggest for Wenger to buy Gattuso. Anyone saw Gattusso playing lately would laugh at the suggestion Gattusso is getting on a bit and can’t run he’ll be lost with pace of the premiership. What is wrong with Song? Anyway its sad when the world is against you and you would expect one of your own to stand up for you but no they do the opposite.

  338. To Wrighty’s credit, he talked some sense (quite rarely does he) here:

As referee Mike Dean and his team showed at Old Trafford, it is no good relying on officials.

UEFA boss Michel Platini announced last week he is bringing in five referees at every game to improve football.

If he wants to improve the product, he does not need more officials – he needs to take one away.

Namely, the fellow who does nothing except hold up an electronic board and tell tales.

Yes, the time has come to get rid of the fourth official. He is a complete waste of space, as Lee Probert showed at Old Trafford.

All he did was snitch on Arsene Wenger to ref Dean, getting the Arsenal manager sent off. Referees hark on about respect but where was the respect for Wenger?”

  339. luke- that bit about the ref is irrelevant in my opinion its a ploy to try and balance his article with something positive. here is the other stuff:

“SO a few weeks into the new season and the secret to beating Arsenal is out.

Not that it is that much of a secret.

It is exactly the same way teams beat them last season, the season before and the one before that. By bullying them.

Arsene Wenger accused Manchester United of trying to kick his team off the pitch in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

There is no point complaining about it. He needs to address the issue by bringing in someone who will stand up to the bullies.

If he does not, the manager’s five-year wait for a trophy might go on even longer.

When I played for Arsenal, we never let ourselves to be bullied.

The likes of Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira would stand toe-to-toe with opponents and say: Have some of that!

Then, once we had won the physical battle, we could press ahead with the football. That is what the current team need to do.

Wenger’s emerging team have no trouble with the footballing side of the game. The trouble is, they have no one who can have a scrap”

Oh please tell me something new, who is he kidding? we outplayed, otfought them in every department how do we need to scrap and fight to avoid an own goal, to me there was nothing wrong with the way we played it was one of those unfortunate things that happen. Out of the 2 mangers I think Fergie need to be concerned about his team because they were shite.

  340. I think Marcus is really NYMarcus don’t ya think?

  341. 1 loose Cannon – ‘scrapping’ is all very well, but when the rules are applied differently to us it’s difficult. If Darren Fletcher was an Arsenal player and cheated as much as he did on Saturday, we know exactly what would have happened. Wrighty can take his crap and shove it back where it came from.
