Nasri Signs Apparently, RvP & Contracts, Other Stuff

A quick addendum at the beginning for today’s post with The Telegraph reporting that Arsenal have completed the signing of Samir Nasri for £12.5m. Nothing on the official site as I type so you do wonder if the boys in their newsroom have jumped the gun slightly. We shall see. Anyway, on with the rest of today’s post as it was going to be…

And I realized then that the wages of sin
Was two bucks an hour and working weekends

– The Wages Of Sin, The Rainmakers

OK so it is a tad out of context in terms of the post but it was the first song that sprang to mind when reading the comments made by Robin van Persie. The wage demands of the players are guaranteed to provoke strong reactions amongst fans and the media know this, phrasing their reports with emotive language. The Dutchman’s comments are a thinly veiled criticism of the Board’s wage structure, in particular they are aimed at the departure of Mathieu Flamini and the same fate presumed of Alexandr Hleb, and nothing at all to do with the rumoured contract negotiations he is undertaking, if indeed he is,

Arsenal have a policy in which they will not go over a specific amount of money when agreeing the salary of a player. They won’t pay enormous amounts of money. I think that they should go to a higher level of salary. If you want to keep the group together, you have to keep them happy. If you are 27 or 28, I can understand that you would make the decision to go elsewhere if you can earn three or four times as much. If that sort of money was also paid here, I’m sure that person would stay. It is the principle. It is very important that Arsenal keep these guys. This group is unique. If a number of them leave, it will be different. I think of myself as an Arsenal man but Arsenal should also try to make sure that we all grow together

If one takes van Persie at his word, he displays the naïveté of youth. At best it is ignorance of the ‘real world’. Indeed, he raises fundamental questions about the operation of the club. There is little doubt that there is more money flowing into the game as a whole and Arsenal benefit greatly from this. However, there is a new stadium to be paid for and only one club is this world has a seemingly limitless pot of cash upon which to call. The rest of football operates on a carefully constructed budget – either well designed or fundamentally flawed with most clubs falling into the latter category. Wages in football are extortionately high yet subject to the same supply and demand patterns of other industries. It just so happens that the gene pool for employers to call upon is more limited than most.

Looking at the specifics of the current squad and Mathieu Flamini, the offer from AC Milan that he has accepted seems baffling. This is a man that has not even been called upon by his country to participate at Euro2008. He is not going to sell large volumes of shirts so – if the reported salary is correct – how do Milan make the money to contribute to the drain on their finances that he will cause. Obviously not having to pay anything other than rent on their ground is a massive boost yet with Italian attendances dwindling on a seasonal basis and the lucre of the Champions League missing, they are heavily reliant on their broadcast revenues to survive; some might argue dangerously so.

Van Persie uses the logic of ‘if they can do it, so should we’ but life is not like that and he needs to appreciate this. He is rightly concerned that the wage structure might allow others to leave but our erstwhile Dutch forward needs to recall the clubs recent history. It has form in paying high salaries from Campbell through to Henry and Ljungberg; it so happens that those deals turned out to be bad due to the poor returns received after the ink was dry on the contracts. The message is ‘we will pay if we deem it worthwhile’.

The number of core members of the squad that must be held onto is very small indeed. The majority of the squad are good players but at this moment in time, I would suggest that the ones who should not be allowed to leave are Sagna, Clichy, Fabregas and Adebayor. The remainder contribute greatly to the whole but those four individuals are a solid basis upon which to build. RvP could join that group but the past two seasons have shown him to be physically unreliable; Rosicky is in the same boat. Walcott potentially could be the same in the moving into the essential players category. The rest? Replaceable. That is not to say that I want them to go – far from it – but highlighting the essentials and the rest.

That said, the squad as a whole works astonishingly well and has a sense of unity – Bendtner and Adebayor’s spat aside. Part of the reason is that there is no large disparity in wages. If Danny Fiszman is correct and the Arsenal wage bill is similar to that of United and Liverpool, the squad are largely well rewarded for their roles. The four singled out above perhaps more than others deserve more because they are delivering on a consistent basis. The rest need to work on their game in varying forms before they can beat down Arsene’s door.

On which subject, the vapid imaginations of the media are stirring up a hornet’s nest over Cesc’s contract negotiations. His representative is a Dein – aha, they cry. The Board will not like that! Except the Board are very likely being led by Ken Friar crooning, “War, huh? Good God y’all, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing”, wondering what the hell all the fuss is about given they have been supposedly thinking about giving him a new deal anyway. As for the assertion that Dein Jr. is more of a pain than Diaz was simply on the basis of whom Daddy is, well that I find hard to believe. Let no-one forget how Diaz was constantly touting his client around via various media outlets – will Dein do any different? No, so where is the worsening of the situation?

Just when you thought you had got to the end of the post with no substantive mention of Alexandr Hleb, up pops his little Byelorussian head to say, “Hi, Hugs, I might stay after all”. I doubt he will and more likely that the Spanish media will be right in presuming he is en route to the Camp Nou. This is starting to look like “Reyes II – The Return” in the manner of the departure with lots of claims and counter-claims coming out. Tellingly though, nothing yet on the official site, not that one expects any comment on a transfer that is being played out in the media. Still he will find friendly faces in Barcelona with Henry already there, soon to be joined by Emmanuel Adebayor. Talking of old rumours, Miguel Veloso has flitted into the limelight again with a transfer fee on his head that is spookily like that mentioned for Hleb – I wonder if they could be related? Running onto The Emirates pitch next season might not be Gary Lewin with the FA wanting him to join the national squad on a full-time basis, his replacement seems to be one Neal Reynolds so welcome to Arsenal young man whilst Gilles Grimandi is going to keep ‘em peeled for Arsene having rebuffed the seductive advances of Paris St Germain.

Right I’m off to start the repairs now that the weather has broken which has a very real possibility of degenerating into a startling accurate remake of ‘The Plank’. ‘til Tomorrow.

  1. If we should sell Hleb I think we should try to get a world class player as an exchange….

  2. after hleb’s comments yesterday, it’s doubtful he’ll leave. it’s just all media crap to be honest. so let’s see. don’t think he’ll leave though. nasri -99% sounds good.still in need of 2 more signings minimum imho.

  3. 3 more:
defender, striker and defensive midfielder doesnt matter if hleb leaves or stays..

he he… i think more of it has to do with how things are unfolding on flamini’s front after leaving arsenal….
hleb is already paranoid of shooting… and after watching flamini’s fate unfold in the last few days… he is now paranoid of leaving arsenal.

    its a story… but a good one.

  4. Hleb’s new hankie-at-the-eyes speech about loyalty is so outrageous I broke out laughing.
After three weeks of scorched earth pronouncements by his agent, Gelato boy comes back with this sincerity claptrap? I was a big fan of this guy even in the dark days, but now reckon he behaves as badly as he dresses.
Must feel that he has made it too easy for Barca and is hoping he can prise some extra toppings by pleading separation anxiety.
    Hope he gets pimples.

  5. do u know no think that kolo fits into the core of the team?

  6. Maybe someone sud start collecting the clubs our wages are similar and whenever a ‘question’ arise then they can show them to prove what Danny F says is the truth or……………?

  7. we were 3 million below man and 10million ahead of liverpool when it comes to wages it was on sky sports

  8. now why does kolo keeps popping up here at ACLF, he is the one player we never would wanna lose.

  9. you seem to forget that flamini was out of contract. that means that there are no transfer money so for a clubs finance the total player cost – transfer+wage is far less than if flamini had to be bought. Milan has got them self a bargain, while Arsenal maybe have to spend a lot of tranfer money. In total much more than if they had given flamini some more money. I understand the arguments for Arsenals wage structure but it can sometimes be more expensive. The problem is last year, where flamini took a chance and stayed on which has has payed of for him, while Arsenal never could have forseen the way he developed, maybe the club should have acted faster regard his extension on his contract.

  10. I am deeply disapointed after learning that Gallas is the top earner at the club. 1 season with not so stellar contribution to the team, he had no right to surpass Cesc, Clichy, Gilberto, Kolo, Van Persie, Rosicky, and even Hleb. No wonder some players appear unsettled.

Give the captaincy back to Gilberto or Kolo, and if Gallas can’t leave with it, sell him, but by no means give it to Cesc. He is my best player in the team, followed by RVP,DUDU,ROSICKY,SAGNA,CLICHY,THEO, but the captaincy has a way of corrupting our best players(creative, Viera an exception). Just make him the top earner.

  11. fargunner, yes it would have been financialy cheaper to retain Flamini with more money, but extremely expensive in terms of team morale and the precedent it would have set. Players would simply not sign extensions knowing there would be a raise when they are free, and that is a situation you always HAVE to avoid. All this in based on the assumption that we need to replace him, which in my opinion we don’t.

By December most fans would aggree that we didn’t need Flamini afterall, especially if Hleb also leaves.

  12. well even if nasri is in, we will still need to bring a replacement for flamini, nasri is not the answer to that.

I cannot look at next season optimistally until we have brought in a good strong centre-back!

I cannot blame RVP for his comments even if its a bit veiled, I still love him, he always makes sensible and positive points in his press statements (unlike a lot of arsenal players) you never doubt his commitment to the club.

By the way can any of the arsenal fans residing in london poison SENDEROS’ groceries next season, your services will be appreciated!!!!!

  13. How did the clown get into the ‘Essential catagory?

  14. Malaysiangunner

    HI YW

You are alive and that can only be a good thing.

I for one am glad that Hleb is staying if nothing else it is a stability issue but I would ask him to sign for longer periods though. Otherwise we will have repeats of what just happened and that is not welcomed at all. If he was to repeat this next season then he should leave quickly. I am not sure if he is trying to do a flamoney on us ie run down his contract and leave for free at higher wages.

YW , I think Kolo has done enough and is good enough given a proper pairing to be the core of the team. He was part of the Invincibles.

I am surprise that our wage structure is 10 mio pounds ahead of Liverpool and only 3 mio below Manu. What year is that statistic, did it include Henry/Lunjberg/Pires/Campbell ?

Nasri joining is good , at last we have a natural left footer in the midfield other than RVP and Dudu , who are not midfielders naturally. We need pace and stamina and speed to play that position.

    Up The Arse!!!

  15. Taygoo, i agree with you, but from AC Milans view it is a extremly good deal and from the player they are taking a big chance if they let their contract run out concerning injuries etc. Flamini took a chance wich payd off. Its a gamble for both the club and player, this time we lost.

  16. The same way the clown was allowed to post here….

  17. Why people keep saying we lost? We lost nothing on Flamini, we got him for free and he left for free. Nothing more, nothing less. All the best of luck for him…it’s over now. Couple of months and probably no one will ever hear about Flamini again until he comes along to play Everton in the UEFA Cup.

How many years do you need to move on?

  18. The salary structure is very important in any organisation. Personally as a fan of Arsenal, i’ll like the bord of arsenal to re-structure the salary of players in order to keep the player motivated.

  19. gunner4ever, take it easy, i was talking about yogis post, nothing else. As a gamble we lost, not as a club, we move on and replace him but of course at a price, if we dont have one already, which i actually think we do. Please comment your post in context with the other arcuments. Hopefully we are all adults.

  20. Really good article this morn. I am afraid I have to agree with Yogi’s essentials list despite King Kolo’s omission. He has slipped from his pedestal somewhat and was nowhere near his consistent self this season. Failings in his centre partnership may be to blame but there is no hiding that his performances have been not nearly as robust as previously. I am a big fan but when we needed the old Rock, he along with Gallas wobbled just too much. I am sure he can return to that essential list, but for now!

  21. Gunner 4 Life;

We lost on all that opportunity we gave him…if we would given that much of playing time to someone else we would have had better option..cost is not all money…

  22. ClockEndRider

RVP makes me laugh. This prick has been sitting on his arse picking up enormous wages for the last two seasons at our expense. It’s a bit rich to hear him talking about our wage structure. How about a little quid pro quo here? We pay you a shed load. But only on a pay-per-play basis….

  23. Wages;

I am very surprised if you tell me we are paying as much as manu or even liverpool..just cant digest..they have so many star names who wud be getting more than most of our guys..rooney..tevez..ronaldo..rio..scholes..i thk only gallas and cesc wud match these not others..

  24. On RVP comment;

I think there is lot of truth in what he says..we didnt pay edu and pires what they wanted therefore they left..cashley ofcourse left cause we didnt may him as much..now hleb and flamini..there is definitely some fire to that smoke

  25. I don’t know why, but I think Hleb will stay.

  26. I was amazed to see that we pay virtually the same wage bill as Man Utd – then how did we get the reputation of being poor payers, it doesn’t add up.
As for Van Persie’s remarks, I think he should consider making a refund to the club of the wages he has hardly earned over the last two seasons.
These Cashley-type remarks like he nearly drove off the road when he was only offered £55,000 per week are very hard to take by the fans who mostly earn nothing like that in a year but still stump up what is a huge percentage of the earnings to buy match tickets and keep their idols in the fashion to which they have become accustomed

  27. Wise words, Yogi.

  28. crafty bison

clockendjim – because we pay our youngsters extortionate amounts. It’s an open secret that Traore and Denilson are on £15,000 a week. And whilst the youngsters sign their first pro contracts at, say, Liverpool for £500 a week, we pay them more than five times that.

  29. Ole Gunner;

I too wish hleb wud stay but i dont think he will…

what happened to a signings from premier league itself ..which arsene promised..who is that?

  30. shawn wright phillips;

i heard he is out for sale..i like the guy so does arsene..unfortunately chelsea ruined his career..so did his step dad by suggesting him to join chelsea instead of arsenal…

if hleb goes i dont mind replacing him with swp..

  31. now tht nasri deal is almost done… i see no kranjcar or zarate coming…. i think only a defender would come from one of the premier league teams… micah richards is a probability…. or might be even wheater.. who knows..

  32. fargunner has a great point above. Great point about Flamini having taken a chance. That’s what was a bit more despicable about what he did….he strang Arsenal along, saying he was going to sign.

  33. SWP is too similar to Walcott for me.. we dont really need him coming in and taking playing time from Theo, Also Theo is far more effective in my eyes and will blossom next year.

We dont need cover for Flamini.. just look at who we got…. Diaby, Denilson, Gilberto, Song who can all play that role.. but for me Diaby should be given the chance there, he has the most ability out of all of them, and is ideal to partner cesc if we can work on his defensive side.

I still reckon Hleb will stay, all this crap comin out in the media hasnt come from his mouth its his agent. But i would be pissed personally if my agent was sayin stuff like this without my consent?!! just doesnt make sense, there must be some truth in the storys.

  34. Chris goona;

we are not in business of developing talent..and i dont know why most guys are so gung ho about theo..the fact is he wont be making starts but will remain impact player..just like last year..arsene prefers to play eboue ahead of him all the time…we shud look at someone like swp for eboue place..incase someone gets injured..

Also we do have options in midfield but are they good options…gilberto..lets not forget arsene placed him behind flamini and even diara..and for most part he was average?

diaby and denilson…they are more attacking types..not defensive type which we need..else our fragile defence will be more exposed…

song i can agree..but again arsene sees him in CB position..but i wont be surprised if song makes DM as his own..cud happen..

  35. On Hleb..

even the real chairman put him in his list of targets after ronaldo..so wud be very surprised if arsene manages to keep hold of him..but real interest is good for us..may be we will get few more bucks with competition..

drogba leaving chelsea and ronaldo leaving manu cud just give us the title cosnidering they are thier most effective players…not best way of winning it..but why not..

  36. I think Arsene prefers to play Hleb ahead of Walcott. Both Eboue and Walcott are competing with Hleb.

  37. Humble_Gun, I think Arsenal will make a point with Hleb. If he’ll go it’ll be at top price or for a swap. I am not sure how much Real are ready to pay for him. But I think they’ll have to pay through their nose to get him.

  38. ole gunner

agree with u on that..but we need better back up..than eboue and theo..more proven back up..who cud make starts and perform with consistency..eboue is make shift and theo is still underdeveloped..there is where we miss out..we dont have quality replacements to our best 11..

  39. On The RVP comments,

It’s got to be said following his contribution as unlucky as it was, these are not wise words.

But in the lad’s defense, he makes some valid points, the key one being, that while we acknowledgge that this a special group of young players coming through, for the main objective to be acheived, they must be kept together.

That main objective being to win trophies for the club.

He is simply stating that the fact that being such a special bunch players will count for nothing if their collective potential is not reached and they are kept together. Flamini was a loss, a big blow considering his impact this season, may be the squad can bear more of these than Van Persie or we realise but you can understand his concerns.

  40. RVP, here’s an idea. win some trophies and this will invoke the very generous bonus system built into your contract.

Or stay sat on the bench enjoying your pityful £35k a week, but please keep it shut whilst you are doing so.

  41. YW, thanks for resuming full service & (almost)brining Nasri along. Gud luck with ur rebuilding.

    hkm 🙂

About the signing from EPL, didn’t AW also indicate that bring an english player would be expensive, so didn’t he mean it was going to be an foreigner with EPL experience?

  42. Hey Danny!

I completely agree with you on RVP. He is a fine player and injuries are not his fault. You can see that RVPs statements are always more sensible than the likes of gallas and lehmann give out.

His comments are out of genuine concern for the state of the club and NOT a suggestion for his own payrise.

I still believe in him, the guys commitment to our club is beyond doubt!!!

  43. The figures relate to 2006-07 when we had TH (£15m) and Freddie (£80k a week) on the pay role. In addition Dein was on a large salary. As was Edelman.

Wenger’s budget includes salary and transfer fees

Spanish (and Italian?) clubs benefit from more favouable tax laws allowing players to keep more of the earnings

  44. Humble_Gun

Diarra was not placed ahead of Gilberto in the pecking order, Wenger had to try and please all the players by giving playing time, and Gilberto suffered the most as he is the most professional out of all of them. I have to disagree with you on Walcott as ive seen enough talent and contribution that he can give to us to merit a starting spot. 90% of all our fans will tell you that as well, forget what you might think Wenger is thinking.

This leaves us with Hleb & Walcott as RM’s.. Eboue dropping to cover for Sagna. Nasri, Vela, Rosicky covering left and probably several otha posistions. So to say we lack quality in cover in midfield is wrong, but i still think one one more quality player like ‘Barry’ will give us that extra cover to challenge on more than 2 fronts.

  45. Malaysiangunner

    Danny

I agree with you and moreover he sees what he sees, Flamini , amongst Arsenal’s most effective player last season was lost due to salary issues. This salary structure no matter is not written in stone. We overcame that with Sol Campbell, TH 14 and etc. Sol was sign in for free so Aw could have justified it but the same logic can apply to Flamini as he is going to leave for free and any effective replacement would cost at least 8 mio pounds. The issue has been that AW did not sign him on long term 2 years earlier because he did not rate him and may still not rate not rate him as he is allowing him to leave for free.
Only time will tell if AW decision not to keep Flamini no matter what is a good one.

    Up The Arse!!!

  46. How come clubs like spurs newcastle and west ham spend so much year after year?

howdo they manage to afford it?

  47. Malaysiangunner

Thanks Vivb for clearing that up. We now do not have any one at 100,000 per week players compared to the Manures and Pools. This spin of us having one of the highest salary is what it is – a spin. I as a business man can understand what is needed to keep the cost low but sometimes we need to spend money to make money. I just heard over the radio that teh Bundesliga has over taken the EPL as the most profitable league as EPL Clubs spent too high of the percentage of their income on players salaries and transfers. But on the same go none of these Bundesliga clubs are in the CL semi finals.

May be the EPL clubs need to relook at their business plan. I am sure the advent of a certain Russian in the scene has made it expensive for every one in the EPL. The UEFA is finally doing someting right in putting the amount that the club can borrow from third parties and debts it can take on to qualify for the CL. The Manures and even Chel$ki will need t relook at their books.

    Up The Arse!!!

  48. i read somewhere henry was paid as high as 200k pounds per week in his last year of stay here….
..and signing on bonus was given at the start in one go rather than spread out over four years of his contract that he signed.

It is imperative that cesc, sagna and clichy are paid higher than the rest….. i mean in no world of imagination should rosicky and RVP be paid anywhere near to 60k…. Gallas being paid 80k is also baffling but prolly it will be stepped down since i dont think he will be the captain coming season.

  49. Chris Goona

Why would wenger please flamini when he was suppose to leave after a year…he didnt even please diara over flamini though he was his replacement…wenger plays players only on merit..he has displeased many in past including gilberto if he feels they aint good enough..

i am ok with nasri.rosicky…but if hleb goes we shud replace him..also last season when theo was given chance to start ..just like bendtner..he wasnt that effective..lets not forget bendtner got himself red carded when given a start and all theos best performance were as impact players..he didnt do much when given start..he is not yet finished product lets not jump gun on him..

  50. @Naga Gunner:

    Poison Senderos?

Get a fucking life cunt. Poison your mom.

  51. Everyone’s purplexed about the Arsenal wage bill. Without having any in-depth knowledge of the Arsenal accounts, perhaps it’s not just that we keep all our squad well paid, but that we generally have more staff within our infrastructure than other clubs? We seem to have so many fingers in so many pies at a youth and scouting level, we seem to have a scout in each country, plus entire academies such as that going on in Indonesia. I’m not saying that clubs such as United don’t, but I’d venture to suggest that we’ve probably got the most extensive / expensive youth and scouting network of any club in this country.

I’m pleased to see Hleb’s comments, and I believe that backs up what I’ve personally been saying over the last couple of days, he hasn’t behaved badly, the only thing it was lacking was a personal declaration of his content, which he has now made. I’m sure Arsene was disappointed in Alex after ice-cream-gate, but he knows where his bread is buttered, and if there’s any chance of convincing Alex to say at Arsenal, I’m sure Arsene will grasp that tightly. Lets pay the man the wage he deserves (ie. the equal of Gallas at least), and add to the talent pot with the likes of Nasri. I want one step forward, not two steps back.

  52. confidentgoner

HG, They have not built a huge stadium plus they are more willing to take on debt. We are less willing. There are several ways to look at it but I guess we cannot resolve it on this thread.

Chris Gonna, I feel we still need a strong midfielder plus 2 CBs. Watch our games and you will notice that we were often out-muscled in the central areas, even with Flamini.

Theo’s development should not be compromised by exposing him too soon. We will only end up with a broken player and disappointment. I think he needs more cameo roles at least for the first part of next season.

  53. Mr. Wenger is proving that the club is doing well in term of revenue but there is a sensible reason as to why players are complaining; and its got to be addressed.
    1) They are playing at a top four club and its natural they will compare themselves to the other three.
    2) Some senior players feel they need a reward of their position at the club e.g Silva must be the saddest man at the Emirates
    3) Why will a club make profits by making money on each match day when they earn peanut bonuses and earn penny wages a week?

  54. Gunner4life..

You need to understand that wages are paid not on yearly performances but by what the player supposedly offers to team…u cannot plan on injuries and performances when you fix pay..

On Gallads; he was world class defender with chelsea and world cup finalist..if we wudnt have paid him that high why wud he have come to us? and we desperately needed CB then to replace sol ..thats the reason we didnt take substantial cash from chelsea for cashley..

    Rosicky/RVP vs Clichy/Sagna

If at start of last season u wud have said sagna deserves more than rvp people wud have laughed…rvp was highest scorer for us sagna was rookie who many though was not needed..how wud club have paid rvp less and sagna more at that point of time….same with rosicky ..who is captain of croatia while clichy isnt even in france squad..we have to look into circumstances of salary fixation ..not what each deserve..

  55. Can any team really challenge seriously on more than 2 fronts now?

I’d say the Top 4 are so strong that by default they can be sure of at least a semi-final berth in the two domestic cups. But with the kind of money involved in football now, only two competitions really matter. League, Champions League. No team can compete on 4 fronts.

    What does competing even mean?

It’s clear that there’s a better than even chance that one of the big four will fail to win one of the big two. So the benchmark for competing is NOT winning. The benchmark is having a real chance of winning.

If that’s the definition I think Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United can compete on all fronts while Liverpool can’t.

  56. Are our players poorly paid? Do we know they are?

  57. rosicky captain of craotia????

anyways… i am not saying how to decide who is paid higher or lesser…

I guess the way we build our play with the whole team as the central theme rather than few individuals… directly translates to the lesser separation between the highest and lowest paid players here.

but it has to change if we r to hold on to the players that we have… and we can only delay the change in wage structure its inevitable that we follow the leading teams in the wage structure….

just like a takeover is imminent however we might deny that we need it.

  58. ole gunner
agree perfectly with r statement tht no team from now on can compete on all 4 fronts except mayb manu coz of the no. of star players they have and the depth in their squad..

Really I dont think cesc, sagna, clichy, RVP, Ade, would be playing even a single match in CC and FA cup even if its a semifinal… Arsene himself admitted he was wrong to play some of the players in the FA cup debacle against Manu.

CC and FA from now on are a play in the field for the junior ranks for every team except the bottom 16
    😀

  59. Humble_Gun

I agree.. i dont want to jump the gun on Walcott, but hes been with us for some time now, hes settled and wants more time on the pitch, and i think he deserves it in front of a so called Eboue anyway. Impact player yes.. but he has alot more to give i reckon.

Flamini was in the team initially because Gilberto (our best performer last season) was away, and he played so well that Gilberto had no chance of displacing him. But Wenger gave alot of games to Flamini because he deserved it and in the back of his mind do you think Wenger wanted Flamini to leave? Giving him more playing time and sacrificing the morale of Gilberto & Diarra didnt pay off.. so i think if Wenger could rewind the season Flamini wouldnt get so many games. That is my point.

  60. Well I think the team that has a very strong and deep squad (whatever that means) is Chelsea. They actually did compete on 3 fronts this season before losing to Barnsley. But they’ve been competitive in 4 competitions in the last 3-4 years. United hasn’t always been. Not this year for sure. Just like last year they were out of the CC at first ask.

  61. Ole Gunner

totally agree on chelsea squad depth and quality as well…inspite of playing very average football…they cud have won both trophies..they almost did..

and we lost only cause we didnt have squad depth..we just didnt have good back up for rosicky..we cudnt rest flamini..hleb..cesc…and unfortunately eduardo our back up for rvp got injured badly…

did we have options..no…for me that was the reason we lost trophies…

  62. Sensible words on RVP.

Interesting news out this morning, firstly AFC say Nasri has not yet been signed, although the deal is close, we’ve seen collapse at this stage before.

Deloitte have reported on the incomes and salaries in the Premiership, incomes are going up but not as fast as salaries, while debt is climbing at quite an alarming rate.

In this context Arsenal would be foolish to start breaking their wage structure, as some other clubs are playing a very dangerous game, the word unsustainable springs to mind.

  63. rosicky captain of czech.. well croatia keeps lingering in mind..may be cause missing england in euro..

  64. HG,

I think we have a strong enough squad to win the league. I’d have liked to have seen how Man U would have coped to long-term losses of say Rooney & Tevez.

No matter how strong or big your squad is, you only need to have so many injuries before that seriously affects you. Denilson could have come in for Fabregas in some games. He was injured most of 2008. Diaby ditto. Song as well. Rosicky. RVP. Eduardo.

Chelsea did have a lot of injuries and really did cope with them, but Chelsea have a squad much bigger than United’s or Arsenal and they’re the only big club in Europe with a squad that big.

  65. Ole Gunner – the point is that we have far less wage inequality than other clubs. Manchester United’s top stars can earn £80k a week, their hot prospects less than £2k, whereas our top stars earn £40k but our Denilsons and so on get £15k. It’s to some degree more egalitarian a philosophy.

  66. everybody is missing the point….

in comparison to Spurs, Chelsea and Man U we are nowhere…

    why ?

    no trophies

each of the clubs pursue agressive policys to sign ENGLISH players… french players don’t know what trophys look like… especially in England

look at the world class english talent on display at Spurs – Robinson, Jenas, Dawson, Huddlestone, Bent, O’hara – All WINNERS

there should be a clear out of all the french LOSERS… otherwise we face mid table obsucurity

  67. gunner4life..

takeover looks inevitable i agree..lets pray the club goes to someone who maintains the discipline and incorporate wengerism in way of functioning..while helps us to retain players we want..

  68. Malaysiangunner

    Ole Gunner

Quite rightly so as far as unable to compete in all fronts but I believe that even in two fronts we had difficulty last season because our best players RVP/Ross was consistently injure thru out the season and one of our best defenders Kolo had to go to the ACN. Chel$ki hardly felt it and in fact when their squad thin down they played better as there were less personality clashes when their African players were gone for the ACN. Kolo came back much disillussion with hims performance and the drop in form subsequently.
All the above said even our squad could not take an ACN and 2 fronts,CL/EPL, so the need for reinforcements is crucial. Nasri is a good first step then we need a CB and some one to either step ( Diaby/Denilson/Bert/Song) to replace Flamini and now that Hleb is not leaving we are OK on the right wing with Theo and Hleb.
How confident are we that Diaby/Denilson/Bert/Song can replace Flamini? that is the 64 million dollar question.
Once Dudu and RVP is back our strike force can match the best.

    Up The Arse!!!

  69. Is an egalitarian policy bad in a team without superstars?

  70. Malaysian Gunner

    totally agree there

  71. Malaysia Gunner,

What does competing mean? In the league we could- and I’d say we should, have won it. We finished 4 points off the pace. In the Champions League we got to the 1/4 final. CC the 1/2 final. I’d say we had a real chance to win 3 titles last season.

I guess it’s almost impossible to define what we mean by challenge, right? I think you challenged if you had a realistic chance of winning it. You were one of the real contenders.

What does competing mean to you?

  72. May be we ‘ve got too many registered players who make up the wage bill so high despite only few are first team players. Don’t forget, from the academy to reserve, we have probably more players than any team from ‘big four’.

  73. lc,

You might have a point there. We do have a whole lot of players, and many of our young players are very well paid.

  74. Muppet;

France is world cup finalist while england didnt qualify for even euro…

  75. Bent and Robinson worldclass..sorry i didnt understand that you were being sarcastic

  76. Malaysiangunner

    Ole

Competing means winning at least one of the few things you are going for. If we had reached the CL final and then loss on account of one off game yes. We mentally lost the EPL title about 5 games before the end( if mermories serve me correctly) we looked like catching up only because the Manures had a few slip ups toward the home stretch. Clichy, Cecs and Hleb looked fatigue and drop form before that. Had the squad been less fatigue physically after the Birmingham game we could have usee Dudu’s injury as a catalyst instead of a dampener.

We did compete but not well enough. Chelsea competed and almost nicked it. Much more depth quality and maturity wise

    Fair enough

    Up The Arse!!!

  77. why dont we sign Dean Windarse!

  78. Malaysiangunner

    Ole

That said I am not advocating Chel$ki type modus operandi. But we do need to spend some more serious monies.( Nasri 12.5 mio for a 20 year old a case in point) Unless the market is full of Dudus and Sagnas ripe for AW easy pickings?

    Up The Arse!!!

  79. Well I am left wondering what you mean. First you say competing means winning, and then you say Chelsea competed but still won nothing.

Come on mate, we looked like catching up because Man U slipped up? So? Is slipping up not part of the competition? Didn’t Chelsea get back in it because we slipped up?

So does competing mean winning to you or not? I’d have said being competitive is one thing, winning is another. But that’s your definition and you’re entitled to it.

  80. Malaysiangunner

Diarra was another one but he was too impatient. But we can trust AW to do the right thing. Like he said they do not need to be big in price , they just need to be big player. Need more maturity in the CB than Willy.

  81. Malaysiangunner

    Ole

Competing means havinga realistc cahnce of winning despite injuries , fatigue bad refereing and etc etc. In both CL and EPL when the going was tough we could not cope in the most important stretch , the business end of the season. It may look like we could have won it but in reality we did not have the depth in quality and maturity. We were also rans.

    Up The Arse!!!

  82. Hey,
heres a question, lets rule out injuries next season, dont u thnk our first team is significantly better then the other top 3? With the likes of rosicsky, Rvp, eduardo included…..and despite the injuries to em dis season we ended up 5 points behid

  83. Hey you Muppet i do hope you are joking

“each of the clubs pursue agressive policys to sign ENGLISH players… french players don’t know what trophys look like… especially in England” – trophies the frenchies do know the look of – The World Cup – The Euro Cup

“look at the world class english talent on display at Spurs – Robinson, Jenas, Dawson, Huddlestone, Bent, O’hara – All WINNERS” – it hurts im laughing so much

“there should be a clear out of all the french LOSERS… otherwise we face mid table obsucurity” – what mid table like the spurs ‘winnners’ you mention above ?

    You great big giant TIT

  84. And personaly i do thnk, dat diby and da likes filled da void left by rosicsky, rvp n eduard, i mean it wsnt like we had stopped scoring:s where we did lose out ws da defence, i still havnt understood y wenger played kolo as RB when eboue cudve dne dat…

  85. MG,

You’re making it all up. Competing means having a very good chance of winning. Which we did. 4 points off the pace proves that. You’re making all the rest up.

I might as well say Chelsea were not competitive in the League this year because they didn’t get 100 points. That would be just as arbitrary as your claim.

It seems very clear to me that we could-and should, have won it. The bad refereeing decisions were not inevitable. Take away the Birmingham penalty, add the Boro goal, and we win the league. It was that simple.

Your claims are self-fulfillling. First you declare we don’t have the squad depth, and then use it to explain everything that happens even when there are more compelling reasons.

It is not certain that we had to have all those injuries. United and Chelsea had their full squads for the run-in, and we didn’t. Even after we’d left the race, we were still constrained to field weaker teams.

We could have a team of 28 Peles, if 10 of them were injured at crucial periods we still wouldn’t win.

Even Chelsea dropped behind when they had all those injuries.

  86. So how do you see Chelsea’s Alex? He has the height and the build and is faster than Terry and Senderos. His aerial ability is solid, has had one year premiership experience under his belt and at 25, there is a lot in him waiting to happen. He has a killer shot and is a dead ball specialist. He’s also dangerous during in set pieces.

I’m not sure he’s happy playing second to Terry and Calvaho at CHelsea. He can find home here playing alongside Gilberto and Denilson.

He will be great playing with Toure and Senderos can learn from him. He’ll be a monster playing for us.

If we approach him we will be successful as he will prefer playing in first XI than being on the bench. HE might cost anything between 7/9 and a wages of 50/60k

YW and all; what do you think of this guy Alex. I’ve watched him play a number of occassions including our two encounters with PSV and I like him.

  87. Malaysiangunner

    Ateeb

Lets look at the comparison position for position

Ade versus Drogba Drogba by a small margin ( I think that much of Ade inspite of popular opinion)

RVP versus Torres about even skill wise but different type of player but Torres for consistency.

Dudu versus Kalou/Anelka I think Dudu hands down again different type but strikers all of them – still Dudu

Ross vs Gerard/Lampard/Ballack/Ronaldo – Ronaldo ahead of all of them

Flamini vs Essien/Makele/- Essien in the longer term ahead. Flamster effective

Cecs vs Gerard/Lampard/Ballack Cecs ahead in most areas- passing, dictating play etc

Clichy vs Evra/Cashley/Wayne bridge Evra and Clichy about even Clichy better defensively but Evra ahead on attacking and crossing.

    Hleb vs Gerard/Scholes/Xabi Alonso

Gerard in effectiveness more goals more passes

Sagna – ahead of every one including Brown( who had a good season)

Willy and Kolo behind Terry/Cavalho and Vidic/Rio- look at the number of golas conceded

GK- Cech ahead of every one hands down

But we are only 4 points behind but those nine points tells the story that we punched above our weigh significantly as a team as collectively our first eleven competed( Ole note) but as a squad of 22 players no we did not compete.

    Hence we need strenghtening.

    Up The Arse!!!

  88. This whole squad in depth thing is bunk really. United won the league last year without the three players they acquired this season. That must mean they lacked depth 1 year before. But they still won. They were notoriously lucky with injuries that year.

We won the the invincibles season with a rather weak second string. Here’s our squad list for that season.

Listen, don’t get me wrong. It sure helps to have a squad like Chelsea’s. But it’s about consistency. It’s about luck. it’s about having some 5-10 top performers, another 10-15 who are above average.

I keep arguing this issue because I think it’s wrong to say the Arsenal squad is weak. It’s quite strong. We’ve won trophies with less quality squads.

It will be criminal not to recognise the quality of our players.

  89. Good point Ole Gunner.. completely agree

We had a very capable squad at the start of the season where players were continuously moaning about 1st team chances… Diaby.. Diarra.. Gilberto etc… then a few injuries hit us.. then a few more.. and suddenly we have a small squad. Absolute crap and excuses for the weaker supporters.. we were simply unlucky on injuries so to all those sayin we should have bought this player and that player in Janurary thats why ur not manager of AFC.. Wenger prepares for every season to each precise detail and makes sure every position has sufficient cover and quality.

Even Left Mid… we had Hleb, Rosicky, Diaby who were comfortable there.. Right Mid we had Walcott, Hleb, Eboue… RB we had Hoyte, Sagna, Eboue.. and its like this in every position.. if you look through Wengers squads he covers each position at least 2-3 times. So let the manager do the managing ppl from now on.

  90. Malaysiangunner

    Ole

I could tell you that if we had more maturity and depth we would have won the game against Boro as Clichy would not so fatigued to make that mistake. With more maturity we could have won against Birmigham yes , we could have won the EPL. Had we more depth than Sendy, he would have stop that crucial header by that Liverpool striker( I forget who). and we could have been in the final in the CL.
The bad refereeing and the injuries would not have mattered. We would have won one competition and be in at least the Semi Final in the other.

    Up The Arse!!!

  91. Malaysiangunner

    Ole

Yes we had won with much weaker teams and this team in relative to teams in the past it is a very skillful team. But we are not competing with ghost of Manures/Liverpool/Chel$ki of the pass. We are competing with teams acquired with a lot more monies since the advent of Roman. Yes we are doing very well for the dough that we had dished out. All credit to AW and the board. Now we need to take the next step. Chel$ki is spending another 100 mio pounds and the Manures is spending another 50 mio pounds. So are the Spuds etc etc.

Let get real Ole et al money surely does make a difference at this level which you try to deny.

    Up The Arse!!!

  92. MG,

Clichy was so fatigued with 12 games to go in the season that he went ahead and played excellently and energetically in the remaining 12.

You say; we could have won Birmingham with more maturity. Blimey. Our Carling Cup team of teenagers could have beaten Birmingham. Ditto Boro. It could all have gone very easily differently.

You’ve convinced yourself and you won’t allow any facts to sway you.

Senderos: Listen, in the first leg at the Emirates against ‘pool Bendtner stopped a clear goal on the line. The ref didnt give a stone-cold penalty. We had the squad depth to have those clear opportunities. All Bendtner had to do was jump, and we’d have gone to Anfield with the advantage already.

  93. I see Muppet’s on a roll again. 🙂

DeiseGooner and HumbleGun, stop taking Muppet seriously. He’s hilarious.

Someone else pointed this out but I wanted to emphasize it. In the recent interview with Fiszman in which he made it clear that our wage bill is only slightly behind MU’s and ahead of Liverpool’s, he differentiated us from those other clubs by saying that Arsenal have a policy of keeping players’ salaries as equal as possible — i.e., preventing large wage gaps between the top tier and the lower tier of players. Obviously there have been exceptions to this.

What strikes me about this entire discussion in the media is that it has long been well documented that Arsenal have the 3rd highest wage bill in the PL, this is not news. For years now, when new figures come out about PL finances, Arsenal is always reported as being just behind MU in wages. Yet they keep perpetuating this myth that we’re stingy employers.

I’m not at all surprised that Gallas is the highest paid player, he wouldn’t have agreed to come to Arsenal without making certain his Chelsea salary came with him. He’s a two-time PL title winner and world cup finalist.

The Telegraph reported a few weeks ago that Arsenal doubled the wages for Cesc, Clichy, Sagna and Ade.

I think I mentioned in yesterday’s discussion that UEFA have held a mtg in Manchester to discuss the growing influence in European competitions of clubs with massive debts. They feel that MU and Chelsea in particular benefit disproportionately in competitions due to their practice of buying players for enormous sums and racking up massive debts in the process. Apparently they plan on coming out with some kind of policy to discourage this.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to keep Hleb anymore because I don’t believe he’s committed to the club. I can understand if he feels like he has only a short time left to win trophies and that he may feel that he won’t win one at Arsenal. If he feels that way, then he should go. I’d rather have a player who sees his purpose at the club as working hard to get Arsenal a trophy rather than Arsenal giving him a trophy.

  94. One interesting thing that Myles Palmer said, according to his supposed “inside sources”:

“Hleb doesn’t want his transfer to become a test case. But Arsene does, so that saga could run and run.”

I have no idea if that’s true or not but if it is, it does explain the long delay in public comments from Hleb, and now his rather contradictory, noncommittal commens.

  95. NYmarcus,

    Well articulated post.

The last point about Hleb – I hope that Wenger feels exactly the same way. He is 27, not yet past his prime, but he will not be approaching his peak again, and one wonders now about his motivation for the cause. He is a good player, class, there is no doubt about that, but his ability to shoot at goal is always questionable.

With respect to the issue of debt, I hope that this issue can be addressed without it looking like a case of sour grapes. Investment has always been there in football, right from when Nottingham Forest invested in Trevor Francis, the 1st million pound player. And it’s always been the case that mega millions doesn’t necessarily bring success, Blackburns success was short lived, Newcastle finished high up the table but failed to secure the premiership.

The chavs are morally repugnant though. Trophies are nothing more to Abramovich than his latest ferrari. I don’t begrudge the success of the mancs as much as I do the chavs.

  96. i think the fact that gallas is on something like 80k a week should make some people who are obsessed with experienced players maybe understand arsenal’s reluctance to sign them.

i also dont understand this misconception that many arsenal fans have about how far away from winning things we were this season. somebody said if manu hadn’t slipped up, then we would be even further behind them than 4 points.
but why is their slipping up and dropping points any different to ours?

  97. robgib – exactly – media hype – the likes of the bbc pundit team and the love in hacks on sky sports

    Ole

I am a great admirer of our squad as they have played with a lot of heart the whole of last season but if you honestly think that luck and bad refereeing was our undoing and not some inherent weakness you are blind sided by your support for The Arsenal. Our CB pair very clearly is not as good as Chel$ki’s and Manures. Head to head our goals from mid field is not sufficient compared to those above us.

These are not only because of injuries only, just look at the players objectively. The basic ingredients as YW have pointed out is there but he did not include our 2 CBs as indispensible.
A very important part of a potential winning team spine is missing.

You have also forgot to address the issue that our competition is not standing still , they are beefing up their areas of weakness and we should do like wise.

    Up The Arse!!!

  100. i am under no illusions that we need to strengthen, but i just dont think that manu and chelsea were that far ahead this season or will be next season.

  101. Blackstock at work

All this talk of “competing” and “needing to strengthen”, people are forgetting that you can still actually do these things without adding any new players at all. Obviously bringing in new players does help and is a key part in it, but it’s not everything. Simply trying to bring up the level of what you’ve already got can also be just as “strengthening” as bringing in 10 new players. Realistically what is bringing in 10 new players really going to do anyway? Add clutter and confusion to your squad. We need 4 or 5 new players, no more than that. We need sufficient back up for our first team, but just as importantly we need continual development and progression of our existing player’s talents. Competing is doing both of those things well and getting the balance between them right.

  102. Blackstock at work

Basically, examples such as Flamini establishing himself in defensive midfield (albeit no longer relevent), or Song’s sudden drastic improvement after the ACN, or Clichy’s prodigal performance throughout the season, or Walcott’s sudden spurt of development towards the end, are all surely just as important elements of “competing” as spending loads of money on big names during the summer?

And remember it’s not always just the players themselves who are responsible, but the training, patience and development which Wenger and the coaching staff put into the squad. If the coaching staff just said “right sod Diaby and Senderos, they’re obviously not good enough, let’s buy some replacements”, then we risk 1) The huge possibility of big names flopping (Schevchenko for example) and not recouping what they were once worth, 2) Unbalanced wage structure, and 3) Destabilisation to the current squad. Is that competing? You could end up with lots of dead weight going nowhere. However if Wenger and the club can invest more in the likes of Diaby and Djourou, then those player’s eventual improvement will be just as much a sign of competing with Man U and Chelsea as buying a 25m wonderkid, right? If it’s worked before with Fabregas, Walcott, Sagna, Clichy, Toure, Adebayor, Flamini etc, then why can’t it work again with Denilson, Diaby, Djourou, Traore, Vela, Merida and so on?

  103. Money doesn’t make the difference. Quality is the difference. In our case, we buy quality for less money.

We strengthen every season. That’s such an obvious statement that so many people are getting all excited about.

Wenger will buy new players. He does almost every season. And chances are, they’ll be great buys as usual.

Last season, I think it was luck and bad refereeing that did us in. No doubt about it for me. Saying that’s not to say we’re the best team in the world. I just know that, taking aside that 10 game run in Feb-March, we were the best team this year.

    My opinion.

  104. Lets suppose we had beaten manu, and were in da title race, and also reached da CL final…by dat time our 1st squad ws cmpletely missing, flamini, sagna, hleb baned, and da rest we all know abt eduardo, rosicsky,i dun thnk we wudve won nethng without em

  105. And lets suppose fabregas gets injured next season….whose gna fill his position as a creative midfielder, so instead ov getin a replacment fr flamini, which diaby sng, denilson cn fill, we shud get a gud creative midfielder….nope?:s

  106. Big ups to Ole Gunner, Blackstock at Work & Robgib! very insightful reasoning.

I have started to wonder if there is a disparity in age as far as those who think we are just as good or better than Man U and Chelsea and those who think we need to get an investor to buy a whole other team of world class players?

I dont understand, how can a team that was first for almost the whole season and loose by for four points need all these additions, someone please answer me?

MG, injuries have played a part in our demise, i mean even Fergie said he felt for Arsenal because you cannot sustain and win without your very best players. The squad debth reasoning is non existant if we do not have this problem. Not only did we loose players but how about loosing two of your best strikers (RVP & Eduardo). Are you telling me that Chelsea or Man U would have been as good if this had happened to them? there is not that amount of squad depth in the world.

Referee decisions did not affect us, huh? When you speak you always have to put the shoe on the other foot. In other words you cannot just say that it was our defensive frailties but you have to say how would Man U and Chelsea done if these same things happened to them. All teams have defensive let downs that just human but to use that and say that injuries and Refs calls have not affetcted the team just doesnt add up to me. The sum of these parts equal the outcome of our season and if you take out one then we have a warped view. One more point about you saying that it was our defense not injuries, well do you think we would have scored more goals if RVP and Eduardo werent INJURED!! who knows what would have happened but my view is we could have won the league and CL with these two.

RVP is out of order! and some of you are defending him because of the fact you believe Arsenal should break the bank. Some argue that this is why Flamini left but he says he didnt leave for Money, didnt he? so why the hell are we using him to justify RVP’s claim? These players should fall down on their knees daily and thank the LORD for being so blessed to “PLAY” a game. I just moved and i am struggling to get a job that pays $30,000/yr! they need a reality check, their are children in this world that go to the Garbage dump to find their meals and they are talking this crap. They signed a contract and i would almost put my life on it that a gun to the head was not involved, GET REAL RVP!!!

    God Bless anyway!!!

  107. Ateeb – Nasri can easily play Cesc position

  108. I couldnt agree more with your comments Ole n Blackstock I think some gooners are just looking to far to think players brought in are going to bring the club success because every season without a doubt one of those same players we r asking to be sold….Djorou, Gallas, Bendtner, Eboue….. will turn out the performance of the season…Senderos scoring the winning goal in the Champions League final anyone!!!Now that would be something wouldnt it. People singing Swiss Tonys name forever!!!

Anyway hav any of you bloggers seen the new Arsenal 2008-9 strip. I goggled it and ugly aint the word for it.Lets see how many of us will be brave enuff to wear it.Doesnt inspire much confidence

  109. Yeh G4L, they look wack for real. Damn, this is the best they could come up with in a year or there abouts. geez!

  110. DeiseGooner – Nasri in cesc’s position – is that right ? have you seen him play in CM for Marseille ?

  111. Yeah Phil he plays in a more central position for Marseille. They play a narrowish 4-2-3-1 with Nasri playing in the attacking 3. He plays all across the pitch, left , right & centre. Drops deep to receive the ball, can dribble well and find a killer pass. Hes not afraid to shoot either. For the national team he has been used in the wide positions and can play either left or right. So he will easily fill Cesc position when he needs a rest.

  112. DeiseGooner – thanks for the info

    Ole et al

Money in this REAL world begets quality. Chel$ki would not have won the title back to back without money. Neither would Blackburn. AW is trying to do it another way and I am full of admiration and even awe of what he has managed to achieve so far with very little net money spent in comparison with our competitors.
Plse gentlemen and maybe ladies reading I am not advocating us doing a Manure or Chel$ki strategy but I am also not asking AW to hold on to the 50 mio pound he has and making do with what we have now and still believe we can compete effectively. Yes maybe Diaby or Song or Bendtner or Willy or Hoyte or even Sendy will step up a few notches just like Flamster. I will be celebrating just like all of us. But what are the chances of that happening from the evidence we have seen the last 2 seasons?? I have been supporting Arsenal for many years now and I was contented with mid table mediocrity and sometimes very boring football. But AW has changed that and I am happy in I am fact estatic. But now that we are at this level do we want to fall back and be contented? We have a very good core in Cesc , Sagna, Clichy, and even Ade. We are in a brand new world of world wide TV deals and Russian oil money spendings. You are either the top few or you struggle to stay in the EPL. The gulf between the top 4 then the other 3 or four and the rest will be widening because of money. You may want to be romantic which is possible in cup games but in the EPL over 38 games you neeed depth to produce consistent performance.

Yes we could have won it with luck but do you want to depend on luck to win it?

This Nasri from your report looks like exactly the type of player AW is now signing or prefers from his players- multiple roles but if he is comfortable on the left there is where he is needed most at this juncture.
I am excited but is the deal really done?

    Up The Arse!!!

  115. First of all, the salary figures quoted were for 07 and included some 15 million paid out to Henry in his final year, including bonuses which were paid upfront.

Subtract 10 million from that figure and we are about on par with Liverpool and substantially behind Manu which is way below Chelsea.

Notwithstanding the above, Arsenal does pay well but try to lessen the gap between the have’s and the have nots. In essence, their base players make a lot more than most other teams but their stars make somewhat less than the other large EPL, Serie A and La Liga clubs.

The differences are not that great and by holding their wage structure at reasonable levels this increase morale throughout the overall team and also attract a lot of younger players who would be making less elsewhere. Arsenal also goes the extra step by providing Tutors, housing, dietary counseling and other perks to all of their players rather than just the chosen few.

This is a sensible and rational approach to team development by applying a corporate wage scale such as most successful private organizations do and Arsenal have made exceptions to their scale in the past for the Bergkamp’s and Henry’s of the world.

  116. Malaysiangunner, Chelsea is only able to offers wages of such level because they have been sponsored by Abramovich to the tune of 750 million. Manu and Liverpool have done this by piling up debt in excess of 1 billion and will have to to sell part or all their shares in order to avoid bankruptcy within the next 2 to 3 years.

Manu is not even able to cover their debt service at this point which means that their operating losses increase every year. Arsenal on the other hand creates the 3rd largest income based on the current revenue stream and is the only profitable large football club in the world today.

It is very easy to say spend money when it’s not yours, but Arsenal is doing the right thing and I will have the supreme enjoyment of seeing them remain at the top for many years to come.

By the way, Nasri is predominantly right footed and is equally at ease on both wings. With Vela, Rosicky and Traore all comfortable on the left I think we will see Nasri feature more on the right and also be used to spell Fab as needed. One of his talents not frequently espoused is his aggressiveness on defense and willingness to track back and bring the ball upfield from deep positions. He is 5′ 10″ and a solid 175lbs.

  117. Cabrikid, very nice post on 5:54am

I can truly and literally use your model on the company that I work for. Although it is one of the top medical facilities, it pays less than similar facilities, but they balance that with other benefits not matched by the higher paying ones. I guess it’s really up to the “Employee” to decide, do they want more money and no benefits, or the whole package. Don’t forget that Arsenal played CL football (If I’m not mistaken) every year in the last 11. Probably also we were and are the number one team giving chance to young player in this competition. So there are perks for working for Arsenal. I wish I had the chance….

Although, I agree that your point of view is now shared by many. If every one is buying their way through, why can’t we do the same? Only thing is, in the past 11 years I have yet to see anything Wenger does that’s all about the money. That’s why since then Arsenal is always referred to as “Unique” because the model is not followed nearly by no one. We trade only in players who wanted to leave us, Overmars, Anelka, etc. We don’t buy and sell players as a business, we don’t buy players as toys and when we get bored, get rid of them. We provide the whole package, education, good environment to grow, a chance of playing at the highest levels, reasonable salaries, reasonable buying prices, reasonable expectations, and solid foundation for the future.

    What’s your choice?

  118. Van persie should shut his china doll yap.

On the subject of eboure, no way will he be used in a dm position, he is natural winger and would not be comfortable sitting in a deep role . He and wallcott will compete f the r wing spot while nasri ,vela and rosicky9when fit) the left. Interesting will be the dm position will aw buy one or use diaby’song or even maybe djourour or dennilson. I wouldnt be surprsed if alonso is a possibility hence the interst for barry to force the hand of liverpool to sellup.I reckon a big deadline signing will come maybe archavin is a remote chance with barcelone getting hleb
