Fabianski Shines As Chamakh Double Gives Arsenal Victory

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0 – 2 Arsenal

0 – 1 Chamakh (1)
0 – 2 Chamakh (90)

Two Marouane Chamakh goals, a minute into the game and a minute before the end, gave Arsenal victory but it was an outstanding goalkeeping display by Lukasz Fabianski which provided the foundation. The much-maligned Pole shook off the criticism from the weekend to continue his improved form this season but the headlines have been stolen by a poorly-timed Cesc Fabregas tackle late in the second half.

The Spaniard and Arsene Wenger apologised to Stephen Ward post-match whilst Mick McCarthy showed the bizarre nature of his personal life, commenting,

Today was like a throwback to when your mate broke your nose and then bought you a pint

It is indeed, grim up North.

The victory was much-needed to close the gap on second place but more importantly give self-belief following defeats and poor displays against Shakhtar and Newcastle. The match could have gone either way; for all that Arsenal might have extended their lead in the opening thirty minutes, for the remainder of the match Wolves provided evidence that with some luck, they might well haul themselves clear of the relegation battle.

Before the match Arsene would have told his men to weather the early storm and nick something on the counter-attack. Instead, they put Wolves onto the back foot for the rest of this encounter. Thomas Rosicky, recalled ahead of Theo Walcott, picked the ball up midway in his own half and skated gracefully across the turf deep into the home side’s territory, feeding Alex Song on the right. The Cameroon international sent in the perfect cross, eliciting the deserved response from the head of Chamakh, leaving Hahnemann no chance. Forty seconds on the clock, advantage Arsenal.

Five minutes later and the American gained some redemption. Arshavin having robbed Macienne, raced into the Wolves penalty area, Hahnemann raced to meet him and created a large enough barrier to win this duel. Rosicky went close as Arsenal pressed forward and the American goalkeeper once more came to his side’s rescue as Fabregas shot through a forest of legs, the ball rebounding to safety off the goalkeeper.

Arsenal began to cede their early initiative. Wolves began fighting for the ball in midfield, the first warning of the swing in fortunes came when Doyle narrowly headed over the bar from Hunt’s free kick. The hosts would come even closer just before the interval. Squillaci deflected a cross and it seemed the looped end-product would find Hunt lurking at the far post; the hand of Fabianski clawed the ball to safety before the equaliser could be claimed.

If Arsene hoped to regroup his charges at half-time, they were immediately on the defensive following the restart. Jack Wilshere had a largely ineffective game, slipped in the area as he sought to clear the ball, the cross seemed destined to find one of two Wolverhampton predators in the area before Bacary Sagna put in a goalsaving and technically outstanding tackle to block.

Arsenal countered and should have sealed the match with a sucker punch. Capitalising on a defensive slip, Rosicky fed Fabregas on the edge of the area. The Spaniard’s effort skewed wide as his frustration with himself grew. Wenger noted post-match that the Arsenal captain is still not back to full fitness, a target which needs to be achieved sooner or later before an enforced rest occurs, his testiness on Sunday continued into this fixture.

Having threatened in the first half, Wolves began to exert more pressure. As the hour approached, Doyle span on the edge of the area, his effort bound for the top corner before Fabianski turned the ball to safety. From the resultant corner, Stearman found space but could only nudge the ball towards the goal, Rosicky clearing the ball off the line to prevent the equaliser. Within minutes, Foley would guide a header onto the roof of the net from a free kick, the Arsenal defence on the ropes but refusing to buckle.

When pressing so much, the gaps appear for counter-attacks. Arshavin brought memories of that night at Anfield as he sprinted towards the goal, twisting the defenders on a mazy run before unleashing an effort that hit the foot of the post before careering to safety. This warning for the hosts was ultimately unheeded.

As the game entered the final quarter, Arsenal reassumed some control. Djourou perservered from a corner kick and found Squillaci, who got into a tangle and flicked the ball to his central defensive partner. The Swiss fired his effort goalwards only a Wolves defensive knee to send it to safety.

As the final whistle beckoned, Berra struck a shot from the edge of the area into Fabianski’s arms. Everyone waited for him to kill time; the Pole had other ideas, swiftly releasing the ball which eventually found Fabregas. His pass sent Chamakh clear, this time the Moroccan succeeded in beating Hahnemann.

The win puts Arsenal in good stead before the trip to Goodison Park on Sunday. Fabianski had a good match, answering his critics and providing more evidence that he can be the replacement for Almunia whilst apparently keeping the shirt warm for Szczesny, whom has apparently signed a new contract although this has yet to be officially confirmed. Sagna and Clichy dealt with Wolves flanks more confidently than they have in other recent fixtures whilst Djourou and Squillaci had rocky moments but found Doyle dropping deeper than they would normally expect, having to pick up midfield runners instead.

Equally Arshavin was livelier than he has been for a while and justified his manager’s comments about being dangerous having drifted out of the game for a spell. Rosicky had a similar impact on the game although he was more involved in closing Wolves down than the Russian. Chamakh will have drawn confidence from his first goals for Arsenal away from home in the Premier League.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. my god mick mccarthy is a prat!

  2. You are right Gadget. The media seems full of stories this morning saying the same thing. ‘Yes it was an OK tackle, Wenger usually moans about these things, just make sure that tackling doesn’t go out of the game, it’s a man’s game, Arsenal are cheating softies…blah, blah.’

It has now become ‘accepted wisdom’ that Wenger was wrong to complain about tackling, events have proved this, ergo Cesc, and a couple of other Arsenal incidents, we can now get back to normal and carry on kicking people. Referees please note.

I despise ‘accepted wisdom’ and the sloppy lazy thinking that it implies.

  3. Why no mention of Karl Henry’s legbreaker on Arshavin and Fletcher’s on Song. Yogi? Watching too much Match of the Day!

At least I think it was Fletcher, I was too busy shouting to be sure.

  4. Fabianski I applaud you!

  5. Is it true that Ward gave Wenger the finger after being strechted off?

And Wolves fans singing “you dirty Spanish bastard” at Cesc?

  6. I must say the ref in the second half was flpping shocking!! He was acting like he had sent one of the home sides players off early on. And needed to even things up, every single decision was going their way corners, free kicks, throw in etc!

Did anyone else notice the massive run upwards Fabby made when Chamack scored the second goal, he most of been on such a massive high saving a goal bound shot then setting up the second goal, must have been crazy. Also loved the way the defence lead by Sebby created a living hundle at the end, it was beautiful with Fabian smiling….

  7. Fabianski turned from match-loser to match-winner last night, for sure. A great display, and one worthy of plaudits this morning.

Cesc was lucky with his tackle, but no more so than Karl Henry who was unpunished for his studs-up slide on Arshavin. I quite liked McCarthy’s reaction in the end – he said Cesc had apologised to Ward after the game, and they were happy to leave it at that. Can you imagine what Allardyce would have said?!?

Overall, a hard-fought win, with lots of great battling performances – almost unrecognisable from the team who failed to press the ball against Newcastle. More of the same required at Everton on Sunday!

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2010/11/11/fabianski-pretty-in-pink-as-chamakh-goals-bookend-arsenal-win/

  8. Well played Woocash who put Newcastle behind him in fine style. He was my MOTM.

I really do believe that he is the answer. Techically he is excellent – he gets the ball to stick, gets down quickly, has great reflexes and agility. He just needed a run of games..

  9. notlager

That was the tweet from John Cross last night. His source Radio 5live so hardly reliable!

    YW

  10. btw just to say that berra shot didnt quite go into fabianski’s arms, but rather made him produce the outstanding save of the match..gd post as usual YW 🙂

  11. YW – A bit harsh to descibe Fabianski’s last minute save as “a shot into his arms” I think. It was an outstanding save,

  12. Excellent YW.

We are on the up. Chamakh was sick last week, which explains lacklustre display against Newcastle. Cesc is getting stronger. Nasri, Walcott, Bendtner and Arshavin will all hit form. VP will start making appearances and Ramsey will come back.

And how good was Fabianski ? If he cost us 3 points on Sunday, I think he won us all 3 points last night. Squillachi and Djourou looked good and Sagna was exceptional.

If we can hit form and start winning at home, we will close the gap on Chelsea.

  13. Why is this parasite still aorund? Some people just don’t know when to quit!

  14. One of the best bits from last night was when a Wolves player got a completely free header at goal from a scorner; Fabianski gave one of the defenders a right verbal blast (and rightly so).

  15. ” If he cost us 3 points on Sunday, I think he won us all 3 points last night. ”

Two max and we nearly always concede defence is hardly our strength, personally I don’t think he should shoulder the blame for the defeat this weekend. Alone anyway.

    Better than Seaman

  16. Better than Seaman? heh.

  17. For Cesc, such tackles are a rarity. For Karl Henry, he does it week in, week out. His nasty tackles are bread and butter to him.

  18. Yep and Taylor..lol

  19. Great response from Fabianski last night he made some stunning save and showed that he can be the great goalkeeper so many people thought we were lacking. Chamakh decisive again which shows that Wenger still has the eye to find the gems. Arshavin looked really lively, seems his bad patch is over, I’m just gutted he did not score when he stole the ball from the Chelsea reject.

Fucking Hansen is twat, when it is any other player he will say those tackle are part of the game and that Arsene is just a whinging frenchman but when it is fabregas he acts all offended and say it is bad refering and that fabregas should have been sent off!

  20. Maria – Taylor I will give you. Manninger?

  21. Interesting Avatar yogi and good post as usual.
Tough and rough game. Fabianski has a great game and so did the wolves keeper. Chamakh’s relief came quite late – that’s relief to my nerves. Listening to the game in Arabic. Don’t understand a word – expect the few related to Kiswahili. The commentator loved Chamakh saying words such as arabiya and maghreb. Meaning Arab from the west I presume. Anyone know the meaning of the arabic word walcott – anyway sounded like walcott and he wasn’t refering to him. More like walikot or something!

  22. I thought that the ref was extemely poor last night also.

  23. And the media are just lapping it up Consol, painting Wenger as some sort of incompetant pantomine villain with their infantile brush strokes. Frell ’em I say. If Wenger did a Ferguon and stopped talking, how these muppets would beg for a snippet of his gospel. Mind you, we’d have to put up with all the spoilt insults firsts. Bunch of rectums which guess is truely apt since the only thing they produce is poo.

The thing that I think has gone largely unnoticed though is that Cesc’s tackle was utterly avoidable. The ref is to blame for this. All night Cesc was getting more and more wound up by the ineptitude of the idiot and his ilk. You could make a highlight reel alone of Cesc just blasting the referee – if I weren’t so incensed I would have found the whole thing hilarious. Every ‘foul’ they did seemed to go unpunished, so Cesc’s frustration more than anything compelled such a challenge.

Dare I say (I think I shall), with a more observant and impartial ref that tackle would probably never have occured (& Wolves would probably never have had so much possession).

Anyway, people, do you see my glow? This is the glow of vindication – of my faith in our keeper! I shall say no more, just strut around smugly!

  24. I was really impressed by Arhsavin his work rate was excellent, especially in the second half. Also his final third play was great, he really deserved a goal yesterday.

  25. I see you – Gadget!

  26. “The thing that I think has gone largely unnoticed though is that Cesc’s tackle was utterly avoidable. The ref is to blame for this. Excellent points. Agree 100% To think that idiot on ArsenalTV tired to have a go at Cesc after the game claiming his attitude hasn’t been right the past couple of games. AAAAArrggh nearly called in!!

  27. The great goalkeeping performance yesterday stood out above a pretty average one overal, as I do feel that this is a team with an awful lot more to offer. Alan Hansen confirmed his hatred for all things Arsenal on MOTD last night and he is draggig Dixon further and further down with him, it’s really time for the Scot to be replaced as he has never quite got out of the 1980’s and compares everything he sees to this era. Mick McCarthy is the thinking man’s Manager. Sorry I meant to say Prat!

  28. Gadget | November 11, 2010 at 10:46 am |
I didn’t see the game but I am just lapping up every word written by you and the implacable anti-doomers especially the bit about glowing vindication of your keeper. As you know Big Al was my pre-season No. 1 but every game by Woocash has me convinced that he is a big-time talent. Most of the criticisms of him for the Newcastle goal was over-the-top. Chamahk deserved to be excoriated for losing Carroll when that free kick was struck; if Woocash had stayed on his line Carroll would have had an easier job.
Anyways, can someone tell us how many clean sheets has the Pole kept during this run of games. To my memory there have have been at least three which is impressive by our standards. I am loving it.

  29. Wasn’t it nice to get an early goal as well, really settles the nerves that does. I think Chamakh should do that more often for us! Buy of the season so far?

  30. Song most improved player? That cross was excellent, Cesc would have been proud of that one.

  31. Maria | November 11, 2010 at 10:09 am |

    Who’s Sebby?

  32. Talking about clean sheets by Woocash and the defence; just read somewhere else that it is fourth clean sheets in twelve games – Blackpool, Man City, West Ham and Wolves. The last three were all with Woocash in goal.
To read the continuing sniping at the Pole simply proves that most of our fans really don’t cre about reality; they form an impression based on the media and plundits and then simply repeat the b.s. over and over again.

  33. Agree with Maria. Looks like the Russian assassin is regaining his form.

  34. AIC

A few of my team mates will be very quiet this morning after slating me for backing Fabianski after his error against Newcastle.

Anyway, great win, great reaction (exactly what we asked for), and a great clean sheeet!!!

The only thing that wasn’t great about the game was the refs performance, a few ugly challenges from Wolves with intent, and petty diving. All game long their fans were whining on about cheating cheeating Arsenal… where there players were dropping like flies. The ref helped their game plan by giving them as many set-pieces as possible, but Fabianski and our lads stood firm right until the last minute of play.

I just still can’t believe how biassed the ref was.

  35. Damien,

    Sebastien Squillaci.

  36. Our full backs were very busy, both played very well.

    MOTM Fabianski, easy choice.

  37. Wow, yes Maria, that cross from Song. The precision and technique of it was just perfect, one of those ‘here you go my mate, pop your little noggin on that and we will be a goal up inside a minute’ sort of crosses. First thing this morning should be Sagna and Clichy on crossing practice with Song as the teacher and Dr Chamackh as the target.

  38. Chamakh – 8 goals from 14 starts.

  39. Sagna has improved allot I think he even has a couple of assists under his belt, it’s Clichy that needs to work harder in that respect.

  40. CG,

Every duel in the Wolves half resulted in a free kick being given to Wolves.

  41. Talking of Sagna, he made a block takle, in the 2nd half I think, that was as good as a goal. Brilliant defending.

  42. Ole

Wolves half..?? Don’t you mean in both halfs!

The ref was truly shocking, there were 2 red card offences which went unpunished. This is what infuriates me about FIFA and UEFA ignoring technology. Players like Karl Henry, and teams like Wolves escaping unpunished every time.

Mick McCarthy is just a complete twat, he is on the defensive because he knows his team have got a rightly given bad reputation.

  43. Matty,

Wasn’t that a thing of beauty?! Asbi said yeaterday Sagna is the beat right back in the league!

  44. Who’s Asbi, Maria?

  45. A deserving win for the Arsenal, did not get to watch the game, but from what i read it had been a hard working performance. It strange that i did not know that Chamakhwas ill for the last game anyway, i will not indulge on that marvelous work done by Chamakh and Fabianski, but will only say if we improve on our crossing we will add more danger to our offensive line, with Bendtner and Chamakh as forwards for the defensive teams.
Rosicky is better defensively than Arshavin and Walcott, and does a lot more work with the ball, when teams are playing a tight defensive line and is easily one of the best crossers of te ball, therefore Wenger will have to change some of his tactics in these tight matches

  46. chris,

I have also been pilloried for sticking up (!) for Fabianksi both last season and this. I know that I can be quite critical on here sometimes but I have always liked Woocash. It was a great win despite not playing well. Wolves played well and on the balance of play they were the better team but we won without playing well. Other teams like Manu and Chelsea get commneded for this but we don’t.

  47. Who’s the who what now?

  48. Im up!!

  49. westwickhamgooner

That is the poorest quality vid i have ever seen!

  50. Carl Henry is a disgusting cannibal barbarian. Yellow tape him off immediately.

Luckily Arshavin is built like a brick shithouse.

  51. AIC

He has the quality to become a great keeper for our club. The media still paint us as a club who is having a goalkeeper crisis, the truth is we have a wealth of talent. Its a shame some supporters took so long to see it, and didn’t support when players needed it the most.

Almunia for me was playing very well before the home defeat to West Brom, even in that game he made a fantastic penalty save and gave us a lifeline. I can safely say that in Almunia, Fabianski, and Sczwezny we have 3 good keepers that can help us challenge on all fronts this season.

My 1 concern is at CB, with Vermaelen looking like a long term absentee we only have 3 CB’s we can rely on. Song could move there, but our other options are youth and reserve players with little experience.

  52. watching the game again, superbe tackle from bacary at the beginning of 1st half

  53. I think Johan deserves a mention.

How good were some of his passes forward?

  54. Fucking hell. The fix was almost in last night. Halsey was intent on stitching us up. Clearcut fouls against us went unpunished while Wolves were given freekicks for far, far less. We overcame it all. Fantastic, hard-fought win.

    “OneOfUs | November 10, 2010 at 9:34 pm |
    YYYEEEEESSS!!!!!!

    You cunts!!!”

Haha! That just about sums it up. I was not much fun watching that match at all. Felt like we were being set up, the ref doing everything he could to facilitate McCarthy’s grandslam equaliser. But the fuckers didn’t get us.

Those questioning our fighting spirit, our resolve and our attitude can fuck right off after that one. Wind your necks back in. Scuttle off, back beneath the bridge from whence you came.

Seb Squillaci MotM for me. One drop-of-the-shoulder near the corner flag that had Stephen Hunt skidding past in a fine mist of rainspray and pikeyness, before crashing into the advertising hoardings wins it for me. Some of Djourou’s touches under pressure were just beautiful. Well done to both, great courage under pressure.

As well of course as well done to Fabs – but we all knew he was quality didn’t we.

  55. Chris.

I worry for Almunia. He doesn’t even get a mention in the injury updates now.

  56. Haven’t all of our recent clean sheet haul come with Djourou in defence?

  57. deano,

Surely you’re not trying to start a row about Koscielny being at fault for the goals conceded.

    Yikes.

    YW

  58. oh paper says chesney jsut signed new contract. how exciting!

  59. If Chamakh can keep fit, I think he can reach 25-30 goals, in all competitions.

  60. Hard to believe after that performance, but Halsey is said to be a generous referee towards AFC. Stats are that Arsenal haven’t lost a game with him in charge for ages.
In his defence, he has sent off John Terry (Have the Chav$ slumped in ‘form’ with Terry’s return?) and he can’t be as bad as Mike ‘Cough cough, I’ve never had any links to any betting companies’ Dean?

Wesley Sneijder has been diagnosed with anaemia/exhaustion after passing out at half-time during Internazionale’s match with Brescia last Saturday.
The three game a week marathon, plus international games, plus all the travelling, must be very intense for the modern player.
It’s a good thing that the growing squad at AFC is so ridiculously good.

  61. The audible excitement in a commentator’s voice when an Arsenal player goes in for a strong sliding tackle, gleefully edge-of-the-seat readying themselves to shout “Oooo.. one of Arsene Wenger’s men no less…” Is very worrying.

It’s all a bunch of manufactured bullshit, moments of false drama whipped up around a few rickety preconceived ideas. I know almost all football commentary is a flimsy little tapestry of old cliches – but when you can feel the weight of it in the crowd – baying for justice against a percieved hypocrisy which just isn’t there – and when a referee is so clearly guided by it… it’s very hard not to get pretty pissing mad about it. My blood was boiling last night. Stomach doing flips. That 30% testosterone increase deano warned us about filled me up like a sloshing tumbler full of hot vinegar. I could’ve kissed Chamakh at the end… if I didn’t think he might slip me the tongue (sorry). How about those celebrations though? Wonderful stuff. Have that, Premiership!

  62. Bit of a sweeping generalisation there, about the physical demands and fitness levels required. But there is a call for the PL should be reduced, with some gaps in the season if possible. Although, the chances of that happening are very small.

  63. You were not ‘pilloried’ on here for sticking up for Fabianski, AIC. That is obfuscation at best.

You were hammerred for your usual hatred of Arsene and his perceived failure, by you, of not signing more players and sacking Almunia. Quite different.

  64. I haven’t read the comments yet, but surely someone must have told YW that last Wolves shot wasnt into Fabianski’s arms. He went low and stretched out an arm strong enough to get the ball without parrying it out of his reach.
Arseblog is calling it save of the season so far. Im not so sure about that, but it was quite an awesome save considering the likely destination of the ball.
    One time for Lukasz!!!

  65. Verily I say unto you, I am a prophet. Here’s what I ‘predicted on Twitter yesterday morning;

My hopes for tonight. We score in first minute, Wolves bash us for 90 minutes, we hold on and win 1-0. Manc derby ends in an 18-18 draw

Call my 0800 number if you need my ‘intervention’.

  66. Like most of the other midweek matches, issed most of the game last night. Can anyone suggest a link where I can watch detailed highlights?

  67. Bob,

The cheek of that man what an lying little ***** **** ***** after years of hearing his Arsene’s lost the plot, we need a clean sweep of the squad, we need more players blah blah blah, he has to guts to claim he ‘supports’ Fabby!!!

I say it now and have done before this guy is nothing but a sneaky, little parasite.

  68. consolsbob | November 11, 2010 at 12:45 pm |
I agree with every sentence, letter and punctuation mark.

  69. ConsolsBob –

    Who are you to judge?

You have no problem judging others without ever taking a modicum of time to understand the history of exchanges. Beforehand you used to say you missed AIC’s presence on this blog and more recently you’ve changed your tune since he comprehensively rebuffed your previous comments by telling to you to stick to the chickens.

I, too, have been on the receiving end of your comments, but tell me where I have ever passed judgement on you?

Yourself and Ole had no problem having a cut off Bill – for simply being american. Ye even had the temerity to correct his use of americanisms to coincide with your interpretation of what the game is about.

I think AIC’s comments are insightful. I think Bills makes some wonderful points – which if you look are borne from a love of the club/game. I flatly think Wenger and the team deserve criticism for some of the performances that have fallen way short of the standards they set themselves let alone the fans expectations . Bill and I have continuously made the point about our defensive problems. Yet you glibly and arrogantly dismissed any chance of Newcastle getting a result on sunday morning without any basis whatsoever.

So tell me Bob – just who are you to judge ?

  70. I like all of you was elated when Chamakh scored the second goal- but after the euphoria died, I thought for FFS its Wolves-we should be wiping the floor with teams like Wolves! We need to start taking these games by the scruff of the neck and destroying such mediocre teams. In the first 20 minutes we certainly played to the script but it was a travesty to allow Wolves back into the game. Remember the days of the invinscibles- we obliterated teams. The so called lesser teams pretty much knew they were beaten once they stepped on the pitch and it was a question of damage limitation. Now I know teams have generally got better in the EPL especially tactically and physically but FFS look at Kevin Doyle- I just dont rate him at all, apart from Martin Jarvis I cannot name one Wolves player who I would consider an outstanding player!

  71. Runebreaker, Wolves aren’t a bad side at all. They beat Man City, should have got something away at ManU (twice) and were really hard done by at Chelsea – most people watching said they’d never seen Chelsea under the cosh for so long at home. I think we did well, but agree that the game should have been over after 15 minutes.

  72. Joe,

With all due respect, you sound like you’ve been waiting to have a go, that you’re using some thinly veiled slight as your opportunity to make what is from my experience unfounded accusations – hope you feel better.

I shalln’t even attempt to fully defend Bob or Ole as the two are far more capable than I, but Bob wasn’t judging AIC, merely stating a fact which is supported by the posts on this good site.

Similarly, Bill gets called out for his opinions and arguments not for being American. There are many american gunners on this site as testament to your error who have never been chastised by Bob or Ole.

And there is little wrong in corrcecting terminologies. One wouldn’t shout ‘goal’ when a touchdown has been scored and vice versa.

Anyway, Arshavin was magnificent last night. He worked his little cotton socks off and support Clichy rather well I thought. He was a little unfortunate not to have scored, so hopefully he gets a hat-trick against Everton on Sunday!

    Still strutting, still glowing

  73. What it comes down to is this, Joe; when you read CB’s comments, is there any doubt that he’s a gooner?

  74. I don’t rib Bill for being American. I rib Bill for applying terms borrowed from American sports to football. I wouldn’t for example call a touchdown a try, so I find it lazy, to refer to ‘offense’ for example. Seriously, what would you then call a player who plays in our offense? An offender?

Anyhow Joe, Do you ever stop whining?

  75. Rune,

I think the Invincibles benefit much from nostalgia in relation to our current team. I seek not to take anything away from the squad of legend, but we did draw a fair few games the undefeated season against teams who we should have beaten (although prior to the Man U scank the following season, we were wrecking teams for fun).

Plus, I think this Wolves team, judging from their recent performances, is actually a high-end mid-league team. I’d be very surprised if their league position should change drastically between now and May.

Since I’m talking of other teams, does anyone else think City won’t beat United while Mancini is boss? The City that played us would have had more chances and scored a few.

  76. Here comes his b**** now! Snapping at Bob’s feet..down boy show some respect and bow down in the presence of a great gooner!!

  77. Fyi, Gunner4ever, Shotto, Paul, Gris Gris, g69 all gooners live in the U.S.A

  78. Runebreaker

There are thousands of football fans up and down the country that would disagree. I haven’t really watched them that much before tonight, so I didn’t know what to expect. They are a good footballing team, and have obviously worked hard on the training ground, in many aspects in a bad way to manipulate the ref. I was shocked how many times their players were falling. It was like watching 11 Xavi’s play!

  79. consols,

I agree with you. I have never been slated on here for supporting Fabianski. I never said that I had been. Chris said that his mates have ridiculed him about Woocash and I said that I had also been also been ridiculed meaning by my friends – not people on here.

Why would I bother making this up? All the posts are written down so you can easily prove me wrong. I don’t feel the need to make things up; you should know this by now.

  80. Maria,

You are not very bright are you….

  81. I have composed a little ditty for the physical teams who like to say we’re soft but yet moan at some of our tackles:

    We’re hard, we’re hard,
we’ll watch you scream like girls,
snatch the ball, pinch your skin,
& watch you fall like flies.

  82. Hi Joe,

Thanks for the support but as my comment sbaove shows, consols has no basis for his criticism. I know that we have had doubts about the team, especially defensively but this does not make us anti- Arsenal or anti-Wenger. We just want to win, which is something that AW and the club say they want as well. Both of us would have been very happy if we had won trophy after trophy in the last few years, making us look like fools in the process. It didn’t happen.

  83. AIC and Joe for pair of the season anyone?

  84. Parasite,

Irrespective of my intelligence, I am one thing you couldn’t possibly be a real and true SUPPORTER!!

Soooo get lost you prissy doomer!!!

  85. Karl Henry’s tackle on Arshavin:

  86. Lol, I will go for that notlager are we agreed on who’s the b****?

  87. Gadget at 2:26 pm –

Barce-loan-us is the first team that comes to mind

  88. ChrisGooner Gadget- I know Wolves have garnered plaudits for their display against the big boys but its not bad luck they are in the bottom three. We really should not struggle to beat such a team, similarly we should have dispatched West Ham quite easily (I know their goalie had a blinder) but we really need to set a marker down, the gulf between us and teams in the bottom half of the table is such that 90% results should demonstrate this. There are times footballing being football that there will be results that are an anomaly. But overall we really should not be struggling to beat the like of Wolves, West Ham, and certainly not loose at home to Newcastle.
Man City with Mancini at the helm are pretty dire- too negative lack creativity, they should have lost at Blackpool and so far have failed to convince (much to the angst of the general media). Man United look very poor and are getting results through luck more than anything else. They still have players like Nani and Berbatove who have bailed them out- but if they do not really pick up form then they could find themselves struggling to stay in the top four.

  89. Loved the game yesterday. Fabianski and our defense were excellent. Sagna’s tackle/shot block and Fabianski’s save where game saving plays. No way we could have won that game last year. I have been critical of our total dependence on one style of play and our inability to get results when it does not work. Sometimes sitting back, and hitting on the counter can work. Not the way we want to play most games but it certainly it has worked against us more times then I can count. Good teams have to be able to adapt and win with different styles of play.

Not ready to declare Fabianski “the answer” just yet. Like the rest of this team he needs to show he can play that way consistently, but I am very encouraged by what he has done this year. Yesterday was a world class performance and for him to come back after the inevitable criticism after Newcastle showed mental strength that was not evident before this year. Top quality GK can make a huge difference in a teams ultimate results, more then any other player on the pitch. Rock on Woocash.

  90. Maria,

I have been a supporter for many years, far longer than you I’ll wager.

  91. OK, AIC. On second and close reading, maybe you didn’t mean pilloried on this site. Maybe, we can’t know. As you say, your posts are a matter of record and, if I could be bothered, there are many that show your dislike of Arsene. It is guileful to ignore that.

Now then Joe. Who am I to judge? No one that matters. This is not a court of Law. It is a forum of my peers. On here I will say what I like..and what I don’t like. We are all big boys and girls.

I don’t like whiners. I don’t like those who castigate the best manager that we will probably ever have. I don’t like posters who pop up on here just to have a go, however, ‘subtly’ they attempt to do so.

As for Bill. To my memory I’ve made one post where I poked fun at his clean sheets mantra. I have no problem with his posts. A bit dry but well argued and with no malice. He is not that sort of poster. Like Ole, I challenge Americanisms used in Our Great Game always. I have no agenda against Americans or any other nationality.

And if you think I’ve changed my tune about AIC since he threw out a few chicken oriented barbs then I am afraid that you have misunderstood my posts and the depth of my concern for what AIC thinks aboutme and my fowl.

You do make a good pair.

Ma-ro-uane Chamakh [oh my god he came on a free!]

  93. Wolves Preview: Time To Show Arsenal’s Fangs

    see my post at 4:45

i told you szeszney had signed a new deal just by looking at his twitter posts…..if i was working for a british tabloid , i would have earned myself a fortune

  94. One player IC has heckled and abused on this blog is the scourge of damp sheets everywhere: Johan Djourou.
Read a tweet somewhere saying that he only feels like he’s got 50% of his peak fitness back. So, that’d make him quite a good player then?

  95. Maybe we could get Ray Wilkins in to give Arsene a hand now that hes free!!!!

  96. Fuck Ray Wilkins.

  97. Settle Ole . . . . only joking!!!!

  98. you aren’t serious, are you, JD?

  99. re: aic

….i mean just look at his name. and why he chose it. i think iy speaks volumes

  100. Wilkins has indeed just been sacked by Chelsea.

  101. Looking back we always carried a menace with the likes of Lauren, Viera, Petit, Keown etc and no shortage of flair and skill, Henry, Pires, Bergkamp and graft Ljunberg, Palour- we could mix the physical stuff and still play mind boggling football. I doubt we will ever have a team like that again but we have been faithful to the way we will play- what we have lost is the menace factor. Vermalen brought in a bit of still but overall no one player stands out in terms of physical dominance we used to have. Wenger has altered our style of play to suit the players we have but I feel ultimately we need to go back to the successful blue print that brought us success. The youth team luckily is showing much promise. JET, Aneke, Afobe, Sunu, Lansbury are no shrinking violets and are almost in the 6 foot plus category. Frimpong is another who brings physical menance and no shortage of skill to the team, I think in the next two years we are going to see a shift with Arsenal becoming more a more physical team without sacrificing flair/skill. Yes we can win the ELP with the current team- but we would definately win it if we could match the menace of the past greats!

  102. Anyone seen last night’s press conference yet, and the Midlands reporter trying to make a name for himself? “It wus layte and hoi, Mr Wenger!”

    Or something like that!

  103. Any reasons flying around about his sacking?

  104. Bill

Top quality GK can make a huge difference in a teams ultimate results

I don’t see how you can take credit from such a comment, if that is your intention. Many supporters who are now praising Fabianski had it in for him last season, and this season even. Many even suggested he shouldn’t be at the club. Just asking Bill.. did you happen to be one of them supporters who wanted him out? All I know is 30m on a 30 yr old Reina would have been a huge waste of money. Fabianski and Sczezny are top notch, fuck the championship manager mentality I say, we have a good 15 years of not having any goalkeeping troubles!

  105. Runebreaker @ 3:17:

    Spot on.

  106. “Any reasons flying around about his sacking?”

Other than his total ineptitude? Now Ancelotti can speak English there’s probably f*ck all use for him.

  107. Lol @ OneOfUs

That Wilkins is a right smug git. I bet he ends up slagging Chelski off now.

  108. Chris – “Fabianski and Sczezny are top notch, fuck the championship manager mentality I say, we have a good 15 years of not having any goalkeeping troubles!”

A bit short sighted don’t you think mate. Fabianski has been good for less than 10 games and you are declaring our keeper issues are sorted for over a decade. If he keeps up his current form then you could well be right, but don’t jump the gun.

  109. Limpar:
“Seb Squillaci MotM for me. One drop-of-the-shoulder near the corner flag that had Stephen Hunt skidding past in a fine mist of rainspray and pikeyness, before crashing into the advertising hoardings wins it for me.”

The mist of pikeyness comment had me laughing for almost an hour this morning.

  110. Chris:
Look at the archives if you really care, no secret I wanted a new GK this summer and I wanted Fabianski to go on loan. No matter what happens, prospectively it was a huge risk to go into this year with the same GK we had last year. No one can realistically argue that our goal keeping was not up to standard last year and clearly hurt the team. Read some of Yogi’s posts on the issue. Fabianski had some bad games and made some ugly mistakes. There was no way to know that would not happen this year. The fact that Fabianski appears to have turned it around is somewhat of a surprise to me, albiet one that I am very happy about. I am more then happy to see him continue as #1 for a very long time if he plays the way he did yesterday.

  111. No matter what happens, prospectively it was a huge risk to go into this year with the same GK we had last year.

    This just makes me laugh.

I suppose it was a risk for Chelsea to start with Petr Cech last season since he was poor the season before.

  112. Hello all,

What a great match! I was on the edge of my seat the entire game. Fabianski had a wonderful game and YW you were quite right in saying the defense was bent but it did not buckle.

Last night showed not only why the EPL is the best league in the world, but why football is such great sport. Pure excitement for 90 minutes. For me, it felt like one of the longest matches in memory bc we scored so early and the second goal would not fall for us.

Still riding a high from this one!

    COME ON YOU GUNNERS

  113. Runebreaker:
“ChrisGooner Gadget- I know Wolves have garnered plaudits for their display against the big boys but its not bad luck they are in the bottom three. But overall we really should not be struggling to beat the like of Wolves, West Ham, and certainly not loose at home to Newcastle.”

I think this is due to our passing game being off. People say that we wouldn’t have won these types of games two seasons ago but I just don’t see that. Two seasons ago we were dropping points because of defensive errors late on. However, we were more consistent at passing around teams and making them collapse through exhaustion by the seventy fifth minute. Back then the belief that Arsenal would pass teams to the ground and score once that was accomplished was palpable. That same sort of feeling is not there just now. If we get our passing game up to snuff and keep up this defensive solidity, I’m sure we’ll get back to dominating lower and mid table teams.

  114. I went to bed with Fab’s outstanding save with his left hand still bright in my memory. What an outstanding young man and we have him at Arsenal! How did that happen? I thought we were in need of a world class keeper. We had one hiding in the shadows all along.

I was absolutely entertained with this game. As with Newcastle, here was another team who was playing Arsenal’s game. Is this going to be the rule now rather than the exception?

The Moroccan born striker also had an outstanding game. Nice to have a striker who shows up consistently for a game. Maybe he can reveal some of his mojo to Van Persie who, I believe, owes Arsenal several years of effort without a pay checque.

  115. Ole – Comparing Cech with Almunia and Fabianski is a bit skewed. Cech has largely been one of the outstanding keepers in the lge since his arrival despite a dodgy season (by his standards). Almunia and Fabianski had both proved unreliable.

Going into this season with last years keepers was a risk. Currently it looks like Arsene is coming out trumps as Fabianski is doing well (long may it continue). He obviously thought it was a risk as well as he tried to buy another keeper.

  116. Ole @ 3:50:

I stand by that statement. I am not going to check the archives but I think you were also in favor of sending Fabianski on loan and I know there were a lot more then me (even on this blog) who were hoping we would find better goal keeping this summer. Fabianski has been superb so far except for the one mistake at Newcastle. What we are seeing is certainly different then what we have seen in the past. The howlers have mostly stopped. In the 4 – 4 game at Anfield he got a full left hand to one of Torres’ shots but it went past him into the goal. Yesterday his strong left hand was superb in keeping that shot out and not giving a rebound. Woocash certainly deserves to continue between the sticks for us at this point. Long may he play like this.

  117. whose bright idea was it to stick Fabianski in a pink jersey?

  118. The thing is with goalkeepers when you make a mistake its catastrophic- it leads to goal and more often than not to a loss of points. There is no room to hide, if you are an outfield player you can a periods where you are absolutely pants but you get bailed out by your team mates. Hence with goalkeepers the pressure to get it right from the on site is unbelievable. The only way to do it is to gout and buy a top notch goalie (they cost the world and they too are not error proof, and there are not many around), if you are a brave manager you identify talent and you give them a chance- allow them to make mistakes and grow from it, take the heat for your choice and stick by them and hope and pray you are rewarded at the end. Wenger has stuck his neck out with Fabiansky and good for him! He has wobbled at times (trying to sign Reina who has been at his flapping best this season) but so far Fabiansky is repaying the faith. His one fault v Newcastle does not even compare to the calamitous goalkeeping we’ve seen from Van der Sar, Reina etc. Will Fabiansky be an Arsenal great only time will tell but he is on the right path and if he plays as consistently as he has so far do not be suprised if Arsenal owe a trophy or two to him at the end of the season!

  119. I was a kid when Wilkins was in Milan. Can still remember the incident when he threw the ball at the referee in Mexico ’86. And when aging and playing for QPR – I think where beat us one nil in a classic game of pretty football. He was a great footballer. Management doesn’t look like his thing though!

  120. “I always supported Fabianski.”
    “I always supported Fabianksi.”
    “No. I always supported Fabianski.”
No! I supported Fabianski when he was at Legia!”
    “Oh no you didn’t!”

  121. That midlands reporter Big Al.

    He was Irish was he?

  122. Bill:
” There was no way to know that would not happen this year. The fact that Fabianski appears to have turned it around is somewhat of a surprise to me, albiet one that I am very happy about. I am more then happy to see him continue as #1 for a very long time if he plays the way he did yesterday.”

You’re right. There was no way of knowing Fabianski would turn it around the way he has. None of us watched him in training to guage his skill and his confidence levels. This is why those who stood behind Fabianski were calling for people to back off and trust that Arsene knew what he was doing by keeping him in the squad.

  123. 6ft 5!!!!! 😮

  124. Wenger saw Stepanovs in training and also played him.

Some players just can’t translate training into match situations because of the pressure. I think that was the problem with Fabianski, and hopefully he has cleared that hurdle.

  125. we are not firing in all cylinders yet,i say yet,the reason is simple, our best player, probably the best in the world, francesc fabregas,is not 100%,once he gets fully fit we will see the real arsenal.

  126. Limpar:

No doubt, you have always supported Fabianski even when the going got tough. We all hope your instinct was right. Pat yourself on the back and have a pint or 2 or 3.

    Runebreaker:

    Spot on again.

  127. The missing issue here about Fabianski is that none of us saw him on the training ground where, I believe, these sorts of performances were standard. Wenger knew he had a good one on his hands. It was a matter of having him deliver during a game. When I think about all that hullabaloo during the Summer about buying a keeper it was all a smokescreen. Wenger is too clever a Manager not to have purchased a keeper if he felt there was a dire need. Now we know what Wenger was seeing on the training ground all along. Keep your hats on, there is another Pole in the wings claiming that he is the second coming!

  128. some hilarious comments today, these two are my favorites.

    CG:
“I was shocked how many times their players were falling. It was like watching 11 Xavi’s play!”

And to agree with G69 regarding this comment from Limpar
“Seb Squillaci MotM for me. One drop-of-the-shoulder near the corner flag that had Stephen Hunt skidding past in a fine mist of rainspray and pikeyness, before crashing into the advertising hoardings wins it for me.”

    HA!!

Whats this argument about goalies, from my memory Almunia was very good prior to last season. With that, I was confident that if he could get his confidence back he would do well again.

As far as fabianski, he needed a run of games but for me the team allowed him to get bullied too much. This season we have made up our minds to not take the rubbish, hence the reason Cesc was playing the way he did towards the end of yesterdays fine win.

  129. If you think it looks dodgy written quasi-phonetically, you should hear my spoken West Midlands accent, CB.

  130. Goonerandy:
“Going into this season with last years keepers was a risk. Currently it looks like Arsene is coming out trumps as Fabianski is doing well (long may it continue). He obviously thought it was a risk as well as he tried to buy another keeper.”

The same can be said about perservering with the youth project or players like Eboue, Diaby and Denilson. If you put this down to Arsene coming out trumps then we should send him to Las Vegas and get him playing some blackjack so we can pay off the club’s debts.

Andy, when are you and others like you going to learn that Arsene Wenger maybe knows a thing or two about developing players and how to navigate the ebbs and flow of said development? Face it. You were proven wrong and now you want to make it seem as if others shared your gloomy outlook.

  131. Dammit GA you’ve gone and done it! My philosophical nemisis I will, nay, I must strike at thee again.

“Ole – Comparing Cech with Almunia and Fabianski is a bit skewed. Cech has largely been one of the outstanding keepers in the lge since his arrival despite a dodgy season (by his standards). Almunia and Fabianski had both proved unreliable.”

It is this very paragraph that I feel I must enter battle with you upon, because I feel you are judging Almunia more harshly because he is an Arsenal player.

You say Cech has had a dodgy season with the caviate of ‘by his standards’, but do not do this for Almunia, instead declaring him unreliable. However, my question is this: since Almunia has also had one ‘dodgy’ season since entering the league (if you can say he’s had more than one, this could well be the source of our disagreements and so we should battle over this too), why is he unreliable whilst Cech is not?

My sword is drawn and I have struck, but I do not know if my aim was true, am I yet to draw blood?

  132. I’m glad to see our players taking my advice. Gloves, leggings, upper-body warmers, two pairs of socks – both rolled up, embrocation, scarves, woolly hats and now snoods. Excellent. I’ve long believed that the winter months inhibit our quick movement.

Mick Mac: “Ee baah gum. In mah deh if yer warmt up in’t track-sirt, yer’d ‘ave bin slappt rount chops wit kipper ant nicknehmed Mehhhry. Foreign pink-booted poofs the lorrathum.”

Well, Mick – best of luck with the dark ages, love to stick around and all that – and let you kick huge lumps out of us – but we’re all off to challenge for honours. Seeya!

  133. Well said Gadget, its obvious that Chelsea took a gamble on Cech last season as he was crap the season b4.
If we are going to play that game we must be consistent.

  134. Very happy that Szczesny signed a new contract. I hope he fulfills his potential and becomes a great goalkeeper.

  135. ”However, my question is this: since Almunia has also had one ‘dodgy’ season since entering the league (if you can say he’s had more than one, this could well be the source of our disagreements and so we should battle over this too), why is he unreliable whilst Cech is not?”

Cech has had numerous good seasons before last season’s supposed bad one, so it would be natural to assume that last season was a one-off. Almunia has only had one good season for a top club in his entire career. Therefore it’s more likely that his ‘dodgyness’ is actually his normal form, whereas the good season was the fluke.

  136. Bill,

I wanted him to go on loan because he was under immense pressure, and I feared he wouldn’t have the chance to get a run of games and find form.

I have never at any time doubted he’s a good keeper.

I keep telling people that he came to us very highly rated. Some people were calling him the new Petr Cech.

  137. Bob,

Almunia had 2 flawless seasons for us as number 1, plus a couple of seasons of being a very competent number 2. He didn’t just drop from the sky

  138. Well said, Gadget. The double standard is ridiculous.

  139. ”Almunia had 2 flawless seasons for us as number 1”

Disagree, Almunia had 1 good season, and one average one. Flawless he has never been.

  140. Even if I was to agree with you that he had 2 flawless seasons at number 1, it still wouldn’t be comparable to Cech’s record.

This was a comment from a Mancs fan on Joey Barton’s thuggery.

My response is: So is the thief, the killer, and the thug, they all have some “belly full of fire” to do something wrong.

  142. By the way…the live stream of the game on ESPN 3 yesterday was amazing! I had the game at full screen on my 24″ monitor and it looked glorious…Very cool to know there are high quality games available online…thanks for recommendation from everyone on this site…it saved the day yesterday.

  143. Is Joey Barton’s Hitler hair-do intended to rile people up? Or is just a coincidence that two cunts have the same haircut?

  144. G4E,

You should tell the Manc fan that he needs to switch to American football where high paid thugs take pride in delivering concussion inducing hits on a daily basis…seems he is a fan of the wrong sport. I am surrounded by these folks all the time here in the US.

  145. Ole:

I wanted him to go on loan for the same reason. After the performances he gave us in past you would argue that most players would have been shipped out. The only reason I wanted him to go on loan instead of being sold was because it was obvious how much Wenger thought of him. There had to be something that we were not seeing on the pitch. Prospectively like you, I thought he should go on loan for a year to a place where he could play everyday without that intense pressure and hopefully regain his confidence. Then we would know for sure how good or bad he really was. So far he has passed the pressure test but the season has a long way to go. Past history has shown that GK mistakes can snow ball if they start to happen. Fingers crossed that his form this year is the real Fabianski.

  146. Did anyone catch Cesc’s pass into the box to Gael Clichy last night? I wish Gael develops a taste for surging runs into the box like a left footed Cafu. That would provide all kinds of attacking options for us.

  147. Limpar:
“Is Joey Barton’s Hitler hair-do intended to rile people up? Or is just a coincidence that two cunts have the same haircut?”

Funny you should mention that. I thought it was just me who thought that Barton was looking a bit like Hitler lately.

  148. Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard had this to say about Fabianski:

“Everton number one Tim Howard has lauded Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, suggesting the 25-year-old’s performance against Wolves last night was the perfect repost to the “unrealistic” criticism he received in the aftermath of his error against Newcastle United.

Howard suggests it is too easy to criticise goalkeepers and urged the Emirates goalkeeper “to ignore” it and concentrate on playing for Arsenal.

Fabianski is likely to start for the Gunners at Goodison Park on Sunday, and Howard believes Arsene Wenger’s side are in safe hands.

Howard told Everton TV: “Goalkeeping criticism is 90 per cent nonsense.

“He is a fantastic keeper and he showed that the other night at Wolves.

“Goalkeeper is an easy position on the pitch to criticise, so I would tell him to ignore it, I certainly don’t pay attention to it.

“I think he is a top keeper and that is why he is at Arsenal. They have chosen him to be their goalkeeper and he has repaid them.

“It is very easy to focus on when a keeper goes through a difficult time but I think the level of criticism isn’t very realistic.”

  149. I totally agree with Tim Howard. Goalkeeping criticism is 90% nonsense.

  150. Do you give regional accent lessons Limpar? In particular can you do West Midlands?

Only Big Al is in dire need.

  151. I agree with Tim Howard. I always liked him anyhow

  152. I agree with Tim Howard too. The amount of people on here who criticise goalkeeping technique as if they even have a fucking clue! You might have an idea of what’s it’s like to catch an old Mitre Classic when it’s hoofed up in the air by Uncle Murray in the park for his dog to chase… great. Try getting behind a Jambulani thumped on the valve by Ronaldo and then have a go at the professionals.

    – Quasi-phonetically doesn’t even come close to my efforts, Consolsbob. All of mine end up looking like the batteries have been pulled out of some robot flitting between German, Scouse and Klingon.

I did read Oofus’s as Oirish though.

  153. McCarthy got Chamakhed yesterday…

  154. good news from the injury news, gibbs should be fit for sunday.

  155. “You might have an idea of what’s it’s like to catch an old Mitre Classic when it’s hoofed up in the air by Uncle Murray in the park for his dog to chase… great.”

Limpar, you are on a roll today!

Wonderful comments from Tim Howard. How the Fabianski became the villian of the Newcastle match still blows my mind. Utter foolishness!

  156. “Is Joey Barton’s Hitler hair-do intended to rile people up?”

    + the dodgy trimmed ‘tache!

  157. Where’s Nagagunner?

  158. Finsbury, we won.

  159. Very good Paul, very good.

  160. oh yeah!

  161. So the big question in my mind is will we ever see Almunia in goal for Arsenal again?

Barring injury to both Fab and tech-9, i dont think we will.

  162. Or where’s Suga3?

You’re not so Suga3 are you?

  163. I’m surprised by someone’s post earlier deriding us for struggling to beat Wolves last night. IMO the team should be praised for overcoming that struggle. Cold night ‘oop norf, rabid crowd, and to be fair to Wolves, they didnt play half bad. Sure the technical level of their players is equivalent to our 11-and-under squads at London Colney, but they worked very hard closing us down and they put consistent pressure on us at the back. Good thing we have a world class goal keeper in there and a couple of good old english hard asses who arent afraid of a hard tackle on a cold night. OHHHHHHHH WAIT A SECOND……

Great win last night, you could see how much it meant to the players after the second goal

  164. totally off topic here but anyone know why Ray Wilkins was released by chelsea today?

  165. Limpar, I think people can criticize a goalkeeper even if they are helpless against a jabulani travelling toward them at the speed of light. Gomes’ blunder against United Or Reina’s fumble against us are things you can criticize eventhough you don’t stand a chance against Pirlo’s falling leaf free-kick. What I don’t like is when people use goalkeeping truisms, like the one about a goalkeeper never getting beaten at the first post, as a basis for their criticism even when they know it is an impossible save. If one finds it acceptable to criticize Almunia for getting beaten at the near post by N’Gog’s rocket of a shot then they’re full of shit.

  166. NJ, we got the result and everything is good again. But our passing is not up to our regular standard. I think this is what has made the last three games seem tighter than they had to be. I have no doubt that when we start firing on all cylinders again the likes of Wolves, Newcastle and West Ham won’t stand a chance against us.

  167. Ole at 12:54,
You can’t be a prophet if you express a wish rather than a prediction. Not yet the Oracle at Delphi!

  168. Plus the score was actually 2-0.

  169. “Barton has until 6pm on Friday 12 November to reply to the charge and under the FA’s fast-track regulations, may admit the charge and accept a standard three-match suspension.”

surely a stern talking to would be enough of a punishment for this misunderstood fire bellied footballer..

  170. So, AIC and Joe have been voted globally recognised pair of the season.

  171. Gainsbourg,

That’s true. and although it certainly isnt a frequent occurence, we have lost before when our passing was at its tip top best.

That was why I was happy to see Denilson come on for Wilshere. Not that Jack had a bad game, but the crispness of Deni’s passing, his willingness to take the open pass instead of always trying to be the hero with the lofted balls (something he has been criticized for) was great.

I thought we saw a very mature performance from yesterday. Now let’s hope for a repeat of last year’s trip to Goodison!!

  172. LA @4:30, noticed myself how bundled up the team looked. Chamakh had on some kind of unbelievably high and thick turtleneck that looked almost like a brace–going for the Berlin kafeehaus intellectual during the Weimar era. Probably did do IQ tests in the hotel before the game…

Hats off, or rather on!, for suggesting the warmer clothing; someone was listening and that is genuine advice for all of our Mediterranean players.

  173. I completely agree, NJ. Denilson’s entrance seemed to calm the team down and they finally started to string moves of six and seven passes in a row.

  174. Interesting review of the referee performance from last night

  175. notlager- thanks for that link of the Karl henry’s tackle. it is really horrific Arshavin very lucky his foot did not get stuck under him , he is smart and anticipated the danger. I’m not happy that Wenger appologised for cesc’s tackle, simply because these lot don’t deserve it. k, henry will be out this week-end assaultig someone while CESC will be out to play the beautiful football. Why appologise to the thugs ?

  176. I noticed interesting things in the Wolves match. The first is that Fabianski has a terrific and accurate throw, better than Lehman’s. I like it. The second is that Arshavin has been given a flexible positional role in a 5-wide midfield, and so frequently popped up around the centre. Good.

For all that our passing was still not quite at its crisp, beautifully-weighted and unforgiving quality we are used to, and Cesc is not quite back. I thought Djourou had another fine game though, and easily dealt with his duties.

But, man, that save! Wow! Because it wasn’t as aesthetically pleasing as, say, the goalie hurling himself skywards, bending mid-air, and tipping a ball over the bar it has been given less than its due accolades – it was technically and athletically a harder save to make than the circus version. Brilliant.

There are some reasons why the monnicker ‘Flappianski’ was an idiotic thing to say, and yesterday’s save is just one of them. I hate it when Arsenal fans mock their own, and seldom if ever do they apologise when such a comment is later proven to be stupid.

I have no doubt whatsoever we will run Chelsea down. We’ve had a little stutter, and nowhere near the joyous intensity that we prefer to play with. November always seems to be a monthus horribilus. If we are within 7 points of the leaders come December 1, hokoyo (danger), Arsenal are coming to get you.

  177. Gain69 @ 4:26 – Goakeeper is a unique position. Gambling with your keepers is not the same as gambling with an outfield player. Outfield players can afford to make mistakes as they don’t nessasarily lead to a goal.

Gadget @ 4:27 – You at least nicked my ear. And it stings 😉

You are wrong in your asertion that I am “harsher” on Almunia because he is an Arsenal player. I notice more about his game of course as I watch every one he plays. Plus I don’t really care too much what other players get up to. I used Cech as an example as he is widely regarded as a “top keeper”. That plaudit has come after a good number of season virtually error free since his arrival.

To my mind Almunia has doine well, but has also made a number of costly errors each season. He is a good keeper, but this is why is not (in my opinion) in the same lge as keepers like Cech.

I hope I at least parried your rapier like blows 🙂

  178. We are the Arsenal, I know.

  179. ZimPaul,

How about the monicker “Fabulouski”? Saw this somewhere but can’t remember where?

  180. Oops.. Wrong email address and lost my ‘Fabulouski’ avatar.

  181. Well done to the Arsenal Ladies in reaching the CL quarter finals.

  182. I don’t think Almunia is as good a keeper as Petr Cech. I don’t think Cech is as good as Buffon either.

Almunia is a good keeper. We had him in goal in 07/08, our most convincing title run in recent seasons. There wasn’t even any slightest notion that we lost the league because of him.

The attacks on him are ridiculous

  183. Ole – I agree.

  184. New post up on this very subject

    YW

  185. I dont know if Lukasz is world class but potential is there. I don’t judge it just by his las minute save but by creating the second gol through quick release of the ball to the right wing rather than holding to it waiting for last whistle ( and savouring the save ). We tend to judge keepers on saves alone forgettin that they can be very useful field players if they use their brains!

  186. I am agree with NJ.
