Who Do You Think You Are Kidding…?

<cue eerie music> You are now entering the transfer twilight zone, where fiction is presented as fact and the truth is stranger than the reality they present. Consider the story of Andrei, a lowly professional footballer in a Russian outpost. Be prepared to believe the unbelievable, ignore the unnatural and suspend belief in normality….

Which is just about how everyone ought to be feeling by now about the how shenanigans. A game of chicken is emerging, who is going to blink first is unclear but it, as Arseblogger noted this morning, seems to be as dead as the chicken that we ate for dinner last night.

Yet perhaps not. Using Daily Express stories as a source is notoriously dangerous when it comes to substantiating anything that bears even a passing semblance to the truth but some are willing to believe them, Zenit’s General Director, seemingly saying that a deal can still be done. Deadline’s for negotiations is apparently January 26th so that Arsenal can pop over the channel and sign someone else before the close of the window on February 2nd.

Arshavin’s agent is meanwhile acting like a 5-year old and threatening to throw his client’s toys of the rather large pram he inhabits with the threat of invoking Article 17 of FIFA’s statutes. The only snag is that the kicking and screaming will have to go on until November 2009 when Arshavin can take such a course of action. Which is about as hollow a threat as a footballer can issue in such situations.

There is little doubt that a high profile player is going to take up this option at some point. If my rather vague memory is not totally playing tricks on me, it took a few seasons for the Bosman ruling to really kick into action in this country, mainly because the clubs acted swiftly to issue new contracts for their star players but Bosman transfers have become part and parcel of football life. The so-called ‘Webster‘ moves will tread the same path at some point as well and we will deal with it, chastising Arsenal if anyone exercises that option from within, praising them for persuading a signing to do so in the same breath.

Various media-friendly Chairmen will no doubt be holding court bemoaning their lot when their stock is diminished by poachers, whilst aiding and abetting the odd moonlight flit themselves. There is little point in believing that the Gentlemen’s Agreement that is supposed to exist between the G-14 clubs will last for much longer, particularly since very few of the chairmen appear to be of that ilk. The old saying about them having the ‘morals of an alleycat‘ appears to be appropriate.

The other aspect of this that I struggle to understand is the willingness of some to believe that the club cannot go any higher than £12-£15m to sign the player. It is an inescapable fact that were Arsenal to pay the reported €20m that Zenit demanded in the summer, it would cost them an extra £4m due to the fluctuations in the £ / € exchange rate. Is Arshavin worth the £18m that fee would now cost? That is for Wenger to decide. He has his valuation, the Russians theirs.

The Arsenal Board know how much can be afforded but also have to weigh in with the future. It is not as simple as saying ‘we’re being lied to, we don’t have the cash‘. There may be cash today but if the economic conditions worsen as we are told they will, tomorrow’s funding may not be quite so good.

One thing is for certain. If the Board / Wenger decide not to be held to ransom, they should be applauded for protecting the club’s financial status. There are other players out there, no doubt already identified, who can play the role.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Morale in camp is very low at the moment………

  2. Kukaya

On what do you base that?

    YW

  3. I agree, I also believe that this situation highlights that Arsene is not the only voice at Arsenal as some believe. He is constantly notified as tight and unwilling to spend. Well this transfer is out of his hands, Gazidis ( i think i got it wrong) is in charge of this signing as he will be from now on. Arsene will give them a value, however, the board will sanction the signing and Gazidis (again) will do the dirty work.

I would offer some incentives to Zenit in order to try to drop the price. Maybe first refusal on academy players. Of course the player and the club must be willing, but as Zenit play UEFA cup football as well as champions league they can be of benefit to our young stars.

    COME ON THE GUNNERS

  4. The longer the deal(s) take(s) to finalise the harder it takes for someone like me to have hope for the future….YW, my little understanding of the AA deal is that we need(ed) him hence the transaction, but the time that it is taking is a sign that what we wanted may not be gotten….

  5. For all the agent’s chat, I wonder how much his fees are a sticking point.

Difficult placing a fair value on Arshavin – if Bellamy and Palacios are £14m then you’d have to say yes Arsh is worth £18m. But we don’t want to be drawn into those inflated prices.

  6. morale is low after 8 games unbeaten?

Seriously people have to relax. If zenit are willing to sell at 12 they won’t do it until the end to see if another team comes in. And if arsenal are willing to go to 15 they won’t until another team bids higher.

He will move but not till the end.

  7. …and what are you like KukayaGunner?

  8. i hate the transfer window and it seems as though the process of acquiring and offloading players will become increasingly frustrating with this new webster shiz… ah football, what a wonderful sport. revel in triviality.

  9. Great post Yogi!

No way must we be held ransom. This arshavin business has been annoying me from the very beginning, we dont need him.

£18m for him is a laugh, we could buy a world class defender or DM for that, which would be INFINITELY more useful to the team.

If zenit ask anything above £10m, I suggest Arsene should send them a “best wishes” card along with the blessings of all arsenal supporters for arshavins’s deal with Man. city.

    Cheers!!

  10. Except you add on a few million for Premiership “acclimatisation”. Something that Bellamy and Palacios have and Arshavin doesn’t.

  11. Btw if we bid 20 tom it still would not happen till the end!

  12. Morale is high at the moment.

  13. I figure its a business, Zenit would be running a poor business if they didn’t make the most of their prize asset.
How many other players do they have worth 10 million quid?

If i were in their shoes & Man City came knocking I would sell to them too if it meant double the asking price… at the end of the day it boils down to simple economics…

  14. I agree that we shouldn’t be held to ransom by these idiots. From what I’ve read they seem to be making the deal as difficult to go through as possible, wanting us to pay all the agent fees and changing the conditions every other day.

I’m glad we’re not bowing to their ridiculous demands.

  15. F. Frederick Skitty

Good point about Bellamy and Palacios’ prices.

The problem is that we cannot just behave as if the market only applies to other teams. If we need him then we need to get him, not let him get away. There are not all that many really special players available for under £20m. If we don’t really need him, then fine.

I just worry about what some “supporters” will do should we balk at the price and end up not qualifying for the CL (I’m not saying that this will happen, nor am I saying that one would lead to the other).

I can imagine a tsunami of vitriol directed at Wenger, if we don’t get him or another high-profile signing. This could lead to more general unrest, more boo-ing, this time perhaps directed at Wenger. This would fuel a media feeding-frenzy, since nothing would excite them more than a real Arsenal crisis and the chance to bring about a regime change at Arsenal.

I feel sure that this is something he could not endure for long.

The question is, would avoiding all that be worth £1m extra? Would it be worth £5m extra? Do we really not have the money? It’s all fascinating in the wrong type of way.

  16. We maybe unbeaten in 8, but our form this season has proved that this run will likely not continue for long. Villa have the better form at the moment and don’t look likely to drop too many points. We have had over half a season to see what this team can produce and it hasn’t been good enough, we now also have key players out for long periods and therefore the need to strengthen the squad is all the more imperitative.

Arsene and the board need to give serious consideration to the financial ramifications of not qualifying for the CL and the subsequent affect that could have on the future success of the team. AA has been idenitifed by AW as the player Arsenal most want/need, therefore we should put aside some of the emotions attached the deal and swallow some pride.

I agree Morale is low, I really fear for our Champions league place this season if we do not add players in this window.

  17. Russ the Gooner!

“I really fear for our Champions league place this season if we do not add players in this window.”

Yes, We need one or two players but Arshavin is NOT that player!

    Cheers!

  18. Peter Storeys Budgie

    Naga gunner

Yes a DM and a CH would be better than signing an attacking midfield. But Wenger just aint going to sign them. Its Arshavin or nothing this transfer window

  19. It isn’t simple economics though is it? Simple economics would have had Kaka going to Citeh…but he didn’t want to. If Arshavin doesn’t want to go to Citeh…then he does not have to go either. The player has some choice.

The only certain thing about this ‘deal’ is that no-one knows any facts…..and so leaps of judgement…and prophecies of doom are based on nothing at all…..

…..and it is all irrelevant because the current squad are getting their act together….seems perverse to me for some supporters to be watching a team gradually pull off success….whilst on the other hand dising the club over a deal for a player they know little or nothing about….

……it is a great day to be a gooner…as it was yesterday…and it will be tomorrow…with or without Arshavin…

  20. I just hope that if we don’t get anyone fans won’t start another intense period of negativity to undermine the players we do have.

  21. Peter Storeys Budgie!

I still have hopes, 10 days to go. Dont jump into hasty conclusions, lets wait and see!

    Cheers!

  22. That’s just one possible outcome, FFS, but why think about it it all? We’re fans, not agents of the media.

With that kind of reasoning, every club in the country is teetering on the brink of collapse. It just needs a couple of injuries, a bad run of form, supporter unrest and deepening recession to put paid to most top clubs.

I think we’d qualify for the Champions League without Arshavin. And comfortably.

However, I reckon we could do with a very good creative midfielder to compensate for inevitable injuries to that part of our squad.

We already have one exceptional talent in Jack Wilshere, but is it more of a gamble to give him more games than to splash out on a more established name?

I trust AW and Ivan to think things through.

  23. Russ the apparent gooner maybe,…..my morale is high….and I don’t care about yours…..Veeela will lose more games than us in the run in…in fact they may well drop below us in the next three or four games…..

  24. F. Frederick Skitty

No offense… but your comment is not valid to any degree. How on earth will booing be directed to Wenger when he has spotted a player of quality who he wants to bring in, tells the management above him to try bring him in. If they cant bring him in and Zenit are trying to squeeze us for every last penny. How do you explain that to be Wenger’s fault??!! Is it Wenger’s fault also that the economy is the way it is.. stop chatting out your ass mate

  25. I agree with Big Al

  26. ….star again, cG….no doubt about it….

  27. Russ

So these players werent good enough last year either in your eyes??

  28. I don’t think Wenger should spend a penny (so to speak) to keep idiots in the crowd from booing.

  29. re fan response – most of the noise in the stadium comes from the north lower corner and you will NEVER hear them slating AW.

It wouldn’t be a disaster not to get Arsh but as discussed previously I don’t see the injured guys adding much this season and an extra spark from a new player, be it attacker or uber effective DM could be just what we need to mount an assault on the treble!

  30. I don’t think we need a DM – Denilson looks like he’ll be better than Flamini.

Flamini gave us a lot of energy (an exalted quality in England), but Denilson gives us better ball retention, which is vital since Hleb left. He breaks up play better as well. And the best part is that he’s still improving.

As for CH, Djourou’s doing a nice job, while Toure’s looking more solid. Gallas is always on hand, so is Song and when needs must…ugh, Silvestre is also around.

Nope, give me an extra playmaker, with a bit of pace, and I’ll be happy.

  31. Yeh we cannot be held to ransom by these Russians. They will sell. Our club has always been one of strong principles and resolve and I would hate to see us bend to thier demands.

But in the mean time I think we need to focus on the defensive midfielder that we so deperately need.

As for the knob who said morale is low at the moment, where have you been for the last few weeks? Things are starting to look up again finally and moaners like you just drag us back.

Come on you Gunners – lets ave a big win this saturday!

  32. chrisGOONA

I think the squad was almost there last year, we clearly needed a bit more assurance at the back, but we let some integral players go and we have suffered the consequences. I think Flamini’s departure was the most problmatic and we haven’t been able to find anyone in the squad to step up and take on that role to protect the defence.

But the fact that we ended another season with nothing says something about that group of players…doesn’t it Chris?

  33. Peter Storeys Budgie

    chrisGoona

I respect you opinion. But you cant say because the team did well last season they are good this season. They are not.We have not replaced Helb Flamini and Gilberto. The league table does not lie.We have under performed big time this season.

And if we fail to sign AA and then dont buy anyone else of course it will be Wengers faults

  34. People seem to forget that no-one else has agreed a price with Zenit yet, and Barca and Spurs both were reportedly interested in the off-season…

Perhaps there is some consensus between all but Zenit that 20 mil is too high?

  35. Big Al

Nice to see some snensible comments once again, Denilson will only get better and is doing a good job this season. We also have Ramsey who i think could play next to Cesc once he develops a bit, plus Diaby is looking more and more comfortable in the centre of late. The idea of Diaby and Cesc is most appealing at the moment, but Denilson is seen as the safer option because he just keeps things simple. Diaby also is still trying to develop his defensive side.

Why some fans think we need a CB still or a DM really amazes me. Arsenal is an attacking team, and for the last 5 years it hasnt really mattered what defenders we’ve thrown in, if we are attacking we aint defending!! All we need from a defender.. is power and speed. We play a game of ball retention for long periods of games and just need defenders to be quick and stop break away attacks. With Gallas, Toure we have the necessary speed, Djourou gives us height now and isnt too slow, Silvestre and Song as cover. We do not need a CB unless Gallas leaves.

The position we are lacking is wide midfield.. its very obvious to everyone.. Central midfield we have options. But without Theo, ROsicky we are down to our bare bones right now on the wings.

Vela will be class but is just filling in as hes a striker. Eboue is covering but is low on confidence and is simply not good enough to be a starter or relied upon. Nasri is our only fit wide decent player at the moment. That is why we are after Arshavin or any other wide midfielders!

  36. Rev,
I agree. Your economics is very simple. In the real world, however, economics is not so simple. Buying a football player is different from buying a dead chicken. As has been mentioned, Kaka rejected City. The money was better, but he despises the club. Robinho, it seems, wants to leave, even though he would have to accept a pay cut. Most football players don’t have expensive tastes. They like to get drunk; they like to go to bed with loose women; they like to wear gold jewellery; and they like to drive cars that attract attention. Even a fairly average players in the Premiere League can buy these things, so an extra million or two a year makes little difference to them.

  37. Russ

4 points from end of season last year doesn’t lie does it!! Season isn’t finished at this moment in time also is it?? 6 points behind doesnt mean anything at this stage in time.

Another point i would like to put to you.. do you think bringing Arshavin in will automatically mean he gets in the starting lineup, and also have any effect on the team?.. He could well do, but the likeliness is no, Champions are built on teams that have had players playing together for years, look at Man Utd, look at the Liverpool of old and the Arsenal of old. They were formed of teams who had years and years together. Reyes was just as good a talent and a proven talent when brought in, he started well and dropped out the team eventually.

Also… Hleb has been adequately replaced with Nasri who is a far better player in many other areas of his game. Only think Hleb has over him is his ball retention. Flamini was a one season wonder who used his form to earn a move away, how can you blame anyone for that.. With Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey we have better quality there to cover for him. He was a wild dog of a player who cant even get into the Milan team.

Gilberto was absolutely rubbish last season, as much as i love what he done for the club and respect him. He looked finished and Wenger could have kept around maybe, but Denilson is growing because of his chances, Diaby has a chance now, and so does Ramsey.

Wenger has done alot for this club and doesnt think out his ass like you, that is my point. Fans that scream for a signing no matter what for the sake of it.. i wish i could just sack fans like you!!!!

  38. As for the knob who said morale is low at the moment, where have you been for the last few weeks? Things are starting to look up again finally and moaners like you just drag us back.

YW, you would do well to educate all of us to respect each others’ opinions, whatever they are. My username on here is KUKAYAGUNNER and not a knob as alboy would make all on here believe….hahahaha….i respect alboy opinion though but a knob, please……cheers! GUNNERS ALL THE WAY!

  39. i agree. what is wrong with people, dont they understand there is a financial crisis in the world, its not made up people. wenger is doing what is right for the clubs both now and in the future. bellamy is what he is, man city vallue him at that price simply because they can and not simply because he is worth it. why didnt man city offer 14 million last season, cause they were skint. S**** are avoiding relagation plus they always spend over the top for players. i dont know whats happening lately with some fans. i wont name it but i read on sites that wenger is crap and should go, can you believe it ??? We will qualify for champions leage with or without arshavin, i feel sorry for those who genuinly dont think we will and i feel nothing for those who cant handle reallity and just care about losing bragging rights

  40. Thanks Frank,

I meant to get back to you about The Byrds.

I actually like the jangly stuff best. I have up to “Younger than Yesterday”.

Sorry, I just don’t get Gram Parsons. God knows I’ve tried. FBB are just too soulful for my taste. It just sounds like country (almost a dirty word) to me at the moment. Maybe it’ll click at some point.

  41. Big Al

    Dare one mention Buffalo Springfield?

    YW

  42. chrisGOONA, at last someone who thinks that c/m isnt needed, we dont. chelsea started all this crap with maca lay me., then the media start believing you need a defensivemidfielder, i hope we dont get one, nasri and cesc for me, they can both make a tackle, for me its the recent caution that has brought attension, not that wenger can do anything else just yet, but everyone must have noticed how we change when sammy goes into central midfield, for me its his best positon, imagine walcott on the right and arshavin on the left, keep the faith, man

  43. Peter Storeys Budgie

    ChrisGoona

You really do write some bullsh*t

Our back 5 have conceded more goals than the 4 teams above us that is why we need a DM and a CH.Our midfield gives no protection to the back 4

If AA could not walk into this Arsenal team why would we buy him?

  44. YW:
“If the Board / Wenger decide not to be held to ransom, they should be applauded for protecting the club’s financial status”

    Exactly my thoughts!

Realistically, even if we sign Arshavin, how much of an impact he will make and how soon?
He was out of action since November, and even before November he didn’t play much due to some conflicts with Avocado. So it may take more time than usual for him to adapt to the PL and our playing style. And by the time he gets ready, we’ll surely have Walcott and Eduardo back, possibly Rosicky and Cesc a little later.

So I agree we need more creative sparks at the moment, but no thanks if we have to pay that ridiculous amount to the Russian mafia (no offence to russian gooners).

The most important thing for us is keeping RvP fit. I’ll lit the candle and say a prayer before bed from now on.

PS> still no info regarding Eduardo’s return to action tonight?

  45. Micky moo

As low as it might sound, most fans do only care about bragging rights. Some of them fans do post on this blogg too, i wont name names, but as a supporter of Arsenal FC im happy in the way they have handled the affair with Arshavin, and i like how we keep transfers quiet. Why should we pay all these agent fees etc and just agree to whatever fee they tell us. We dont just bend over and get f***** over like the great football club Spurs that is up the raod from us.

  46. Nothing wrong with Buffalo Springfield…oh no…great band…..FBB too…

Big Al, you like the music you like…I am not going to knock you for it……

  47. I love that cG….Mickey moo…as low as it might sound……HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…great

  48. Aha, Eduardo’s playing tonight according to arsenal.com – of course, if anybody’s interested!

  49. Frank

If you have not already done so – & I am sure that a chap as worldly as yourself will already have – that you get hold of some Sid Griffin / The Coal Porters. Might well be up your street, so to speak.

    YW

  50. I said earlier that LG looks like a hen house full of Howards that someone threw a fox into this morning. Seems to be a few feathers flying around here too. Shame.

    Trust in Arsene.

By the way YW, would we pay in Euros for Arshavin? They still havethe rouble don’t they?

Anyone for New Riders of the Purple Sage?

  51. PSB… You are seriously chatting crap mate if you think a back 5 that has Sagna, Clichy, Toure, Djourou and Almunia is not good enough. Our back 5 has been conceding goals because we are giving the ball away cheaply in the attacking 3rd. We havent been attacking!!! Its as simple as that. The best form of defence is to attack. We aint Bolton, we cant sit back and soak up pressure, we simply love having the ball and playing football. Why cant u understand that u?? It is so obvious to everyone that this is the case. When was the last time we scored 3 or more goals in a game before last weekend??? exactly, keep ur mouth shut if you cant make a valid point.

Also… in regards to AA… we might as well not buy any player then because no player has ever came to our club and walked into the team. They must earn their spot. AA plays in the Russian Leage if you aint heard, I think its a tad below the Premiership. Vela who was amazingly good in the Spanish League, he aint even broke into the team yet, did you know that???? ;P

  52. Comparing the Kaka deal with the Arshavin deal is completely ridiculious.

  53. Consolsbob

Not sure about the currency of the transaction, simply that Zenit’s verbose mouthpiece has always been quoted as saying we want €20m or whatever figure came into his head. If the $ was strong, it would probably be figures quoted in that currency.

    YW

  54. Cb, any band with Jerry Garcia is always worth a listen….

YW, any fan of Gene Clark is worth a listen…oh yes

  55. KukayaGunner how can you ask me to respect your opinion? I hardly think, after reading this whole article, simply writing “morale is low at the moment” qualifies as a respectable opinion anyway.

Write something constructive or don’t bother.

  56. Russ the Gooner

    chrisGOONA

“4 points from end of season last year doesn’t lie does it!!” I agree with you there, it doesn’t lie…we did quite well last season, but it still wasn’t good enough to win us anything. Isn’t that what we all want, to win some silverware again?!

I get the impression you think i’m being too negative about it all, well i’m sorry mate but after four seasons without a trophy, out current league position and watching some of the poor perfomances this campaign I can’t help being a bit negative.

My point is Chris, I didn’t identify AA as out primary transfer target, AW did! I’m not saying that we should buy him no matter the cost, i’m saying we need some additions in the transfer window if A) We still have title ambitions and B) We want to be assured of CL qualification.

Perhaps you’re right maybe AA wouldn’t get straight into the team, but AW clearly wants him, maybe to change the dynamic of the team and allow Nasri to move to the middle for some creativity whilst Fabregas is out?!

I agree Nasri is a better player than Hleb, but on the Flamini issue I can’t agree . Yes he had one good season at CM, but I think that’s because he had finally become an accomplished player, much in the same we all hope that Diaby, Denilson and Ramsey will become accomplished players.

As a point of note Flamini’s has had 12 appearances in the Serie A and 5 in the UEFA cup this season. I accept he’s not a regular starter at the moment, but he making the first team and it’s widely accepted that they see him as the successor to Gattuso.

  57. I would suggest our weakest spot is currently right mid where we only have Eboue currently fit and JW not deemed ready.

So Arshavin makes sense as the priority signing on that basis.

  58. Mickey Moo

We don’t need a specialist DM if the players can cover eachother when one goes forward.

And there’s the rub – do we want Cesc covering for Denilson or do we want him threading through a cheeky assist in the oppo penalty box?

Same for Nasri and whoever playes wide right.

We want the quality attackers to be free to roam – and to do that we need a defensive-minded player who instinctively plugs the gaps and protects us from counter-attacks.

  59. “Dark end of the Street..”

    “..bright side of the road”

No real choice is there? Although musically I prefer the former.

    Well argued CG.

  60. QoS

I would agree in the short-term, RM is a priority but the point then is reached as to what the right price is for the player. If AW / Board believe that ZSP have vastly overpriced then so be it. He is, to me, not in the top 10 players in the world and not worth being held to ransom over.

    YW

  61. YW

also agree, you cannot say Arshavin is one of the best players in the World when he plays in a lesser quality league, has 1 good tournament, and 1 uefa cup run. I think Wenger wants to bring him in, how good Wenger thinks he is tho is another matter. None of us really know how good he will prove to be in the Premiership, and maybe it is too much of a gamble to be paying almost 20m for a 27yr old who may be another Shevchenko.

  62. Can’t Usmanov threaten Zenit with some pollonium or a stretch in an uzbeck gulag or something?

  63. New Riders of the Purple Sage – got to be one of the best band names ever.
Buffalo Springfield.. Oh yes!! The Dead – well, some of the most beautiful music ever.

But still, finding real gems in the Bruce catalogue; who else could bring out an album called “18 Tracks” which were just discarded songs – and every single one a brilliant track!!

Oh yeah, Up the Arse! [ Anyone else just a tiny bit bored of the Arshavin saga ? ]

  64. There are alternatives to Arshavin. David Silva should be available given the financial problems at Valencia, and plays in the same positions. He’s very highly rated by some and is young. If he were available at the same price as Arshavin (say £15million) perhaps he might be the superior option?

  65. Interesting call CB re Silva.

Only possible prob is he’s quite slight isnt he?

  66. crafty bison:

count me in the David Silva camp.
    However, is it realistic?

No more transfer related chat from me, I swear..

  67. Count me in. I’d much rather have Silva than Arshavin. Don’t get me wrong, it’d be great to have Arshavin. If nothing else, it should please the “we need to buy players” fans. As somebody else noted, Arsenal are a team of attacking football, and I believe that both Arshavin and Silva fit the bill.
Although for me, personally, I’d rather have Silva. He’s younger, and I think he’d fit in to the team well.

  68. Wow, look at the reserve lineup today:

    Vito Mannone
    Francis Coquelin
    Thomas Cruise
    Kyle Bartley
    Mark Randall (c)
    Havard Nordtveit
    Henri Lansbury
    Fran Merida
    Eduardo
    Amaury Bischoff
    Jack Wilshere

    Substitutes
    Craig Eastmond
    Emmanuel Frimpong
    Gilles Sunu
    Rui Fonte
    Jay Emmanuel-Thomas

I’ve been dying to see those three – Tom Cruise; Kyle Bartley & Havard. And Eduardo of course.

What a great day to be a gooner!

  69. massively promising line-up. Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!

Got high hopes for Coquelin and hope lansbury and Merida push through too.

  70. alboy: “write something constructive or not at all?”

What are you, the thought police? Get a grip. The statement “moreale is low” without evidence to back it up is still a valid opinion, just not one you agree with (nor I for that matter).

I’m not optimistic that Arshavin will end up at the Emirates but that’s only because I’ve become used to Arsenal being linked with lots of names in the January window and then none of them coming to the club. This bid does seem to be more serious though, so here’s hoping.

I think things are looking up. 6 points out of it and still lots to play for. ManU just had a raft of injuries to good players, Liverpool seem to have lost the plot somewhat, Chelsea in disarray. Now if only Villa would stumble a bit life would be even better.

  71. Eduardo hatrick tonight!!

  72. oops, “moreale = morale”

  73. Massive lineup indeed! Come on Eduardo!

  74. Agree on the not being held to ransom point YW but I think he is actually one of the worlds top talents and perfect for us.

People talk like he’s only just come onto the scene but in truth he’s been brilliant for at least three seasons now.

The thought of a being able to pick from a group of midfield players that includes Nasri, Rosicky, Fabregas, Denilson, Arshavin, Wilshire and Merida is really something to savour!

  75. Gris Gris

    Rather than hoping Aston Villa slip up, we should focus on our own performances like we have been doing and keep regaining confidence. Our form is starting to come back, been a long road – especially without;

    Fab (4 months),
    Toure (over a month),
    Gallas (several weeks),
    Walcott (3 months),
    Ade (couple weeks),
    Eboue (1 month),
    Rosicky (1 year),
    Eduardo (1 year)

all have been out for long periods so far this season.. is it wrong for me to say we are doing alrite so far?? 6 points off top??

  76. ChrisGOONA whilst you’d be right to say that we’ve improved over the last couple of months, we’re clearly not firing on all cylinders, and have lost games that we should not have.

We still need something to lift us.

  77. That’s a serious team, TC. Apart from maybe the defence, it’d give any Prem side a run for its money. Does that put Lansbury in the middle? It’d be good to see him start there a bit more often.

    YW,

I haven’t given them a go yet. I like Neil Young’s 70s albums. My thing about FBB was that it sounded too close to Hank Williams or something. Ignorant of me, I know.

The other problem with Gram, and for that matter, my first taste of the Grateful Dead, was the hype. I’d read so much stuff about them and in the end it was a bit of a let down.

If I can contribute a couple of largely unhyped late-60s recommendations: Microminiature Love and Parable of Arable Land.

  78. Al – I think that puts Randall and Bischoff in the middle and Lansbury on the right.

  79. What’s is the consensus on Randall?

  80. Oh well, RP. I also rate Bischoff. Looking forward to this match.

  81. Randall always looks good on the ball and composed, like an arsenal player should in fact.

But I can’t get away from the nagging feeling that Wilshere, Lansbury, Merida and now Coquelin have more of the X factor needed to make it big.

  82. I like Randall, I think he could turn out to be a complete midfielder. In any other country he’d be considered a very promising player. In England he’s seen as a bit of a fancy dan. Tries too many tricks for a central player etc etc.

Didn’t AW suggest that he’s a late developer – because his problem is definitely consistency.

  83. I like Randall too – I think he’s done well in the games he’s played although it was funny that his first taste of Champions League football was getting nutmegged.

Might not do him any harm in terms of showing him how much work he still has to do though…!

  84. The only silver lining in the cloud if Arshavin falls through is we do have attacking options, albeit all injured. Walcott, Eduardo and Rosicky can all play on the wings. Didn’t Eduardo start a lot of games on the left last season ?

I seriously doubt that we would have been in for Arshavin at all, if it wasn’t for injuries. Much as I like the look of the player and agree that attacking wise he would be more effective than Eboue.

  85. Agree, Randall has a long way to go but he is very promising, his frame is a bit slight but his composure on the ball is great. I think a certain fella called Ramsey might be blocking his progress into the team though, Ramsey looks like hes the real deal right now and could feature in Arsenal teams for the next 10 years or so.

  86. Ramsey is going to be a monster for sure, he looks to have a bit of everything.

  87. What I would like to see though is a couple of genuine “star” quality players around the likes of Ramsey and Randall et al.

Someone that is going to help them develop. That’s one of the reasons i’d like to see Arshavin come.

He’s a recognised name, someone that the players can look up to in a way that they can’t with Song and Denilson.

I’m not a total Eboue hater like some, but if i’m Mark Randall and I look at Eboue, I think i’m not far away from starting in this team but if i’m Mark Randall and see Arshavin, I think i’ve got a couple years hard graft yet to reach the level I need to.

    And I knuckle down.

  88. ..or get demoralised at the prospect of never being better than Arshavin and therefore leaving.

I like randall but I just can’t see him being first team, not with the other reserves mentioned above. Cesc, Denilson and Diaby are all young, Rambo’s a dead-cert.

And for me Coquelin looks v promising and Lansbury and Merida too.

  89. That’s an interesting point you raise QoS, but I’m of the view, and it is rose tinted, that any first team player should be looked up to, because the standard should be known, and nobody is given the shirt for nothing. If some of the players you mentioned, like Eboue, Denilson and Song are occupying first team places that they are not worthy of, then that is a more serious concern, that I know has been discussed on many blogs.

The consensus at the moment is that Denilson is slowly proving himself a worthy successor to Flamini, after 28 starts this season. Eboue has been inconsistent after a good start earlier on in the season and Song has done very little wrong, but seems to have attracted a lot of wrath of certain blogs.

Besides, surely Denilson’s CV can’t be too bad, he’s captained Brazil at every level from the U15 to the U20 squad. Pretty impressive if you ask me.

  90. That’s a possibility Romford but then if that happens and he leaves, so be it, it means he wasn’t good enough or didn’t have the right attitude.

Look at Bentley as an example, he decided he couldn’t force his way into the team so he left and pretty much everywhere he’s gone, he has been found out as having the wrong attitude.

If the youngsters are good enough they will make it. Doesn’t mean we should make it easy for them by having inadequate players in front of them.

  91. QoS

Were Arshavin or someone of that ilk to sign, Randall would need to show considerably more mental resilience than Bentley did in a similar position.

In that instance, Randall would need to assess whether or not he has a chance of dispossessing Arshavin, Walcott, Nasri, Rosicky (assuming all were fit) from the team. Not too sure many youngsters would be prepared to hang around in those circumstances and it is hard to blame them.

    YW

  92. I am very pleased with the squad…..First Team, Reserves, Babies…very pleased….and I am enjoying watching them grow and improve…the first team are inching forward and are growing into a successful side…sometimes adversity does that….I agree with TC, it is a great day to be a gooner……all I can say though is that if Arshavin does come…he had better knuckle down and prove his worth……we don’t do golden bollocks…..TH tried it at the end of his tenure…didn’t work.

  93. Muppet i’m biased too – i’m a big fan of Denilson and rate him highly so I didn’t cite him as a “negative example”.

In one way Denilson is a good example for the other youngsters because he’s demonstrated that he can get in the side and do a good job for us.

I think a balance of young players that break through and established stars that the tier below are working to emulate is the optimal solution.

For me, a right sided midfield player of very high quality replacing Eboue would bring us a lot closer to having that right balance!

  94. Well, YW…that is the challenge isn’t it?…and it is exactly that sort of competition that makes the great, great. There you go Mark there is your target…personally I think he has it in him to succeed…I think he is a grafter…and grafting and talent are a potent combination……but we will have to see…..and that in essence is one of the reasons why I love watching this bunch…really love it.

  95. Lansbury will be central tonight – those who were debating it earlier. Wilshere right side, Merida left, with Bischoff pushing on Diaby-style behind Eduardo.

  96. All that we can hope for QoS is that we stay solid, and the midfield gels and hits form. We all know about some of the inconsistencies of Diaby and Eboue, we know that some of players in reserve are tantalisingly talented but just not quite old enough yet. We know that Nasri is superb, Denilson is good enough, and Fabregas will come back. That leaves one more, and we have Walcott and Rosicky, when fit.

We are just down on luck. The other contenders, it seems don’t have half of the midfield on the treatment table. If we could just have 5 or 6 of our main midfielders fit during a consistent run, then as Frank would say, it wouldn’t just be a great day to be a gooner, it would be a great year.

  97. YW in the scenario you outline – he’d be looking probably at three years to be knocking on the door that’ll make him what 22?

I’d suggest at that point he’d hopefully be ready for a slot in the first team squad and the chance to press his case.

I worry that our young players have the expectation that they can all be Cesc and force their way in at 19/20 rather than develop at a more “natural” rate.

Not having the highest quality first team players in one or two positions could re-inforce that expectation rather than dampen it down.

  98. …I don’t think you should worry, QoS

  99. I like Randall. He strikes me as a Ray Palour type.

  100. here are lads iam a toon fan but this is summit i dont want to win so cud u vote for the spuds

  101. Frank, when we lose to Hull and Fulham I worry!

  102. muppet who did you vote for

  103. We beat Hull last week, QoS…were you not watching?

  104. lol Frank we play them twice a season though!

It’s not healthy to block out bad memories!

  105. Vote registered, kkf…no brainer

  106. ….I am not blocking out bad memories…I am assessing the team’s current form….

  107. cheers mate try get the others to vote for them and by the if you see fat ashley knocking around ur way cud u run him over plz

  108. cheers lad hope u win all ur remaining games apart from 1 cos we need the points

  109. I said earlier we’ve improved. But in reality Hull have regressed so it flattered us a bit.

I was at the game on Saturday evening and we clearly still had performances not up to the standard of a side aspiring to win the league.

  110. What QoS may be saying is that some of these young players should come through earlier, and this may have given us more cover where our squad was laid bare by injuries, especially at Manchester City.

Interesting consideration. I would LOVE to see more if Merida, Wilshere, Randall, Gibbs in the premiership. For whatever reason though, presumably they either lack the physical presence, the experience or both for them not to be included at this stage.

But we are definitely going to see more if Vela, Bendtner and Gibbs I think.

  111. Do you think we can beat Everton coming up QoS ?

  112. Nice to see Palacios go for £12m. This was a plyer we could have picked up for 1m but instead told Steve Bruce to buy him. What is this? Are we there to help our rival pick up cheap players and sell them on for a profit. Are we scouts for our rivals now?

This is the latest in a long line of transfer f*** ups by Arsenal. The theory that Arsenal is a well-run club does not extend to transfers where we have failed to strenghten adequately, lost players on the cheap or worse for free and now this.

Pathetic does not even begin to cover this mess which stretches back years.

  113. I think we can beat Everton yes, although I’m not as confident as I would have been 12 months ago and that isn’t because I think Everton have improved!

To win we’re going to need Nasri and RVP at their best – i’d like an Arshavin on board to spread that load around a little!

  114. …equally Alex Ice Cream we got several mill from bentley being sold on etc so that’s on the positive side of the equation.

  115. Is Palacios arsenal quality Alex IC ? I have to confess I’ve never seen him play.

  116. Alex – I understand the frustration but in context at the time – Wenger didn’t want to take Palacios because he had several players ahead of him so instead introduced him to Steve Bruce who he knew would use him well.

Football is littered with stories of players being let go only to do well elsewhere.

  117. Bit harsh, AIC.

What about all the money we’ve made from sell on fees over the last year?

Palacios wouldn’t have been good enough for the Arsenal first team, so we’d never have been able to make much of a profit on him. Perhaps there’d have been work permit issues if he hadn’t completed a certain amount of games – it’s more than possible.

Building a relationship with another prem manager like Steve Bruce isn’t exactly foolhardy either. You never know when it could work in our favour.

Meanwhile the strategy has clearly been to develop Denilson, whose improvement clearly merits AW’s patience.

  118. Beaten to it!

  119. QoS @ 4:05pm

Cesc coming through so young and so brilliantly was fantastic but it created such an expectation that it has become a millstone around all of the younger players necks. If they do not come in, dribble around five opponents and nutmeg the ‘keeper before scoring, they are dismissed as not good enough. And that includes the defenders!

And to think all those years ago, we were drooling over the prospect of young Kevin Campbell and Andy (sorry, Andrew) Cole, followed by Hillier and Selley. Actually, that is unfair on Selley as his career was severely curtailed by injury and he did appear to have it in him to succeed at the highest level.

    YW

  120. I think we will beat Everton on Wednesday….I also think that if we buy Arsehavin he will not play in that game….he will not have trained with us….we have a particular way of playing…and he has not played cometitively for some time…to play him would be courting injury.

I also think that we played extremely well at Hull on Saturday…there are no easy games in the Prem especially away games….or rarely…very good result and I think our performances are matching our main rivals…in fact I think we are beginning to better them.

  121. …..I agree with Big Al….

  122. Yogi that’s why i’d like a bit more quality in there as well.

Something to dampen the expectation so that our young players can develop more naturally without the expectation that they have to be Fab or Messi.

Its great to have young players with marvellous potential but lets also create the environment where they get to maximise it.

  123. David Hillier – kept Michael Thomas out of the ’91 title winning season aged 21 and next thing you know he’s teefing bags from airports.

    Amazing.

  124. ….you want to buy players to dampen the expectation of the younger players???….are you serious….they are already developing naturally…by playing…

  125. The Hull game was a very Arsenal 2008/09 season performance Frank.

We played well in patches but could very easily have lost had the penalty gone against us!

Incidentally I asked JD if he thought it was a Penalty on Facebook yesterday but he hasn’t replied yet!

  126. Will Marie-Anne Fellatio still be suspended when we play Everton?

  127. Mostly agree with you Frank re: the Hull game. If we can cut out the school boy errors in defence we will make our lives a lot easier.

  128. Frank – I think all QoS is saying is that if you set the bar too high, none of the young players will be motivated and will move on. I think that would be a genuine cause for concern if one or two did slip through the net and turned out to be a big name player elsewhere.

  129. Poliz

It was two yellows so assume he’s back, having missed the merseyside derby.

  130. QoS, you just described about a hundred or more games over the last 10 years……but we were never in danger of losing…..finished well just like the Arsenal of old over many seasons.

I am afraid you will have to explain the relevance of your statement about JD….

  131. @Poliziano:

“Will Marie-Anne Fellatio still be suspended when we play Everton?”

Nope, I don’t think so (although hope so) –
    2 match ban:
    1st – l’pool on Monday
    2nd – l’pool on saturday FAC

    Damn!

  132. Frank – not lots of players no – but i’d like a good right midfielder because I don’t think Rosicky is going to

    A) Play

    or

    B) Play well

    until next season!

I think its a lot of pressure for our young players to be expected to perform at the highest level week in and week out. Nik B isn’t ready for much more than sub appearances yet. Neither is Song either. They’ve both had a pretty torrid time at the hands of the fans expectations so far.

And putting our best kid in JW into the side before he is ready isn’t ideal either.

  133. “It’s not healthy to block out bad memories!”

Too right! Keep bad memories in mind. Mull over them. Bring them up as often as possible. Obsess over them. Exaggerate their importance so they interfere with all future action.

  134. Palacios has been bigged up of late & Sperz have paid at least double his real value.

I prefer to see Denilson / Merida etc come through at their own pace but agree that a couple of more established older heads would be good for them to look up to & work alongside.

Can we get Pires back please

I`m unsure about Randall. He`s talented & looks to apply himself but I think he may eventually have to move to get EPL experince.

  135. Relevance was that I mentioned the penalty in the previous paragraph Frank…

  136. Muppet where is the INDEX news Mate? It’s the first thing I look at before I read on, this way I know if I should wear heavey Rosie clothes to counter the effects of high D&M winds.

  137. Muppet…what? But they are motivated..and they are rising all the time to greater and greater heights. I can see that because of Cesc’s unforeseen injury we need a creative replacement because our youngsters are not quite ready yet and so we might have to buy…..but I cannot see that we would buy to dampen the expectation of the youngsters…not at all…I think that that is just utter rubbish

  138. Nobody is exaggerating them Poliziano but bear in mind we pick six points up in those two games and we are joint top of the league.

  139. D&G INDEX – Medium low.

I can report positivity on the blog today, with some minor aberrations 🙂

  140. QoS, I was referring to you stating that you had asked him about the penalty…how is JD not responding relevant??

  141. Interesting that out of the London league, Fulham are top, we’re 2nd and chelsea are bottom.

  142. Frank… I wasn’t making any point about dampening expectations ! Just trying to understand the point QoS is making…

My own view is that you can’t artifically set the bar, but that doesn’t matter.. because as you say… these youngsters will be up for it.

  143. Frank the “dampen” comment was related to the point I made about players expecting to come through too early.

I think we can all agree that would be a bad thing? As it could lead to them leaving before we see the best of them.

Therefore, having good players around the squad whilst making it difficult in the short term reduces the “beat ten men and overhead kick it from the halfway line expectation” that Yogi spoke of, does aid the long term picture of having a Mark Randall at 22/23 itching to replace the 30+ year old Arshavin and Rosicky!

  144. Frank i don’t understand the question.

You would have me say “I asked JD if he thought it was a penalty on facebook yesterday” and leave it there? Possibly giving a false impression that I had his answer but wasn’t sharing?

  145. Hellowww my fellow goomers
I am a Scientist, I’ve worked on many inventions before but my most recent one, is my favorite.
After extensive research, I finally invented a morale gauging tool and it’s perfect.

    Here is how it works
I wake up early in the morning, make my coffee and then stick the morale gauge up my Arse, when it’s secure and well placed I start reading the newspapers, maybe listen to some Radio hacks to get my Arse in the mood. I allow about 30 minutes of reading and no time for comprehending what I read….then I take out the gauge off my arse and post the results.

I will try to post as early as possible so every one would be able to see the results of my Arse stinking morale gauge invention except of course if I eat Falafel the day before, you know what I mean don’t you?

  146. Thanks Muppet, now I can read on…..

  147. Romford

He’s now a fireman I seem to recall seeing or reading somewhere.

    YW

  148. For 15m I would rather AW spend on Hangeland & Bullard/Parker.

  149. I would have you say nothing, QoS

  150. Cheers YW. Had him down as a likely essex landlord…

Must be weird for those guys who just missed the big time of the premiership. Played at wembley, won titles – then back into total obscurity.

  151. California Gooner

crafty bison, I rate Silva highly…but so does everyone else. He will go for far above 20 million. I also rate Arshivin. I’m not sure what the hang-ups are. It seems that Zenit keep changing the goalposts and that Arsenal’s brass just got fed up. But if it is about money, then I really hope Arsenal pony-up. We badly need some creativity and ball-retention skills in the midfield right now, and he has skills that make him much more than a stop-gap. If all of our players comeback from injury AND our young players come through, we will have a selection problem and somebody will have to move on. But how likely is it that everyone will be healthy (and stay healthy) at the same time? Arsene always talks about top class and this guy is top class.

  152. £14M seems a lot to spend on Hangeland.

  153. Evening all. Nice to be back.

Slightly different angle on the Arshavin/No Arshavin story and picking up on something QoS said…

If we DON’T get a new RW, how would you guys feel about Bendtner sharing that position with Eboue, much as Walcott did last year? It’s kind of what Arsene is doing already and it’s working. I know NB is not “a winger” as such, and he’s not super-fast, but he is a creative player. Defensively, he is no worse than Walcott, and it would give him the chance to work on that side of his game, while also playing to his strengths – clever passing and movement. And of course he can get into the box and finish well. Nasri did his thang last Saturday AND stayed out wide (until he was moved to the centre), and Bendtner showed good positional discipline, too. He would get lots of games, but as a sub, and not have to do as much of the CF stuff which he finds more difficult, hence taking pressure off him.

It’s a * temporary * solution and I suggest it because whoever we buy, we have to buy for the long term, not just to get over a short-term injury crisis, so if we can’t get the right player now, let’s wait till we can.
It would still leave the way clear for a new purchase in the summer if necessary.

    What do people think?

  154. Here’s a new signing for you guys & gals….

    Eduardo Eduardo….Click Click Click
    Eduardo Eduardo….Clap Clap Clap
    Eduardo Eduardo….Click Click Click

  155. fungunner – in the current circumstances it would seem to be the best best although I would rather he was sharing the role with a better player than Eboue!

Nik certainly seems at this point to be better coming off the bench.

  156. Big Al,

Bentley was good re sell on fee but Diarra should have been sold for 15m in the first place. Feddie to Wet Sham was also good.

Its not harsh at all – millions lost in frees including Pires and Campbell who was even under contract.

Palacios is no worse than Eboue and we could have done with another midfielder. He could have played a few games and then sold for a profit.

  157. G4E,

Eduardo is not a new signing. he is a player coming back from injury. Eduardo was a new signing in the summer of 07, not now.

  158. I agree with FG…..

  159. I thought you were ‘The Scientist’ Alex IC ?

  160. I also agree with QoS @5.32

  161. Oh no, really?….I didn’t know that.

  162. Stop whining AIC

  163. Hey Muppet…don’t insult my intelligence

  164. Naaaah…The Scientist is not AIC, Moopay

  165. oh.. sorry.. thought it was the same avatar..oops.

  166. Cheers QoS and Frank.

    @ QoS
“fungunner – in the current circumstances it would seem to be the best best although I would rather he was sharing the role with a better player than Eboue!”

Awww. The much maligned Mad Manu does the job mostly – helps Sagna out and softens the opposition up ahead of the cavalry charge… And the thing is, because he’s so streaky, the opposition have to keep an eye on him bcause they never know when he’ll do something brilliant!

  167. AIC is more than welcome to volunteer as reaseach study to try my product?

  168. ……actually FG…if Eboue can get his passing and shooting up to speed he will be very effective….his runs are deadly but he fluffs the cross, pass or shot…..actually it is consistency becuase he can sometimes pass and cross well…he certainly has a talent for getting to the byeline and he is not afraid to run at defenders..

  169. I agree with FG

  170. So what you are saying The Scientist, is that you have a special device, which has a unique arse calibrator that fits snugly up the rectum and effectively traps all arse opinion coming through the air waves. It then is able to download, using, USB or Bluetooth, the latest sentiment to your PC which will then do an XML transformation to publish this on the Net ?

  171. ….if we can get it to whistle as well we are laughing….

  172. @ Frank
Yes – he is a hand’s breadth away from being a stunning player. If he ever gets his head right, well…!

  173. Exactly Muppet, but so far it only works with specific simple minds who are easy traget for Media Crap + D&M….it also doesn’t work if you eat Falafel the night before….I’m still working on it….any one up for trying my invention, it fits nicely up the arse…no pain I promise.

  174. Queen of Suburbia

FG the problem is that Eboue’s “brilliant” moments come very rarely indeed.

How many assists and goals does he have in the last 18 months.

I liked him as a RB but he’s simply not good enough RM.

  175. @ QoS
the main point was about Bendtner, so I don’t want to get sidetracked into another Eboue discussion, but he definitely has his uses. He does get involved in good attacking moves, especially with Adebayor, but if they don’t result in a goal, that’s not necessarily his fault. If he is running directly at players, they can’t afford to assume that he WON’T execute a pass or take a shot at goal. So they have to cover him and exhaust themselves in the process, making it easier for Walcott/Bendtner whoever to inflict damage afterwards.

  176. AIC, I usually say I’m out of my depth with money matters, so bear with a quick glance:

I think it was quite honourable of us to respect the wishes of a player who gave us such good service – and ruined his own life in doing so.

At the same time, nobody knows what the story was with Sol. Maybe that’ll emerge eventually.

Pires was a weird one, but until last season it really looked like he was finished in football.

Guys on work permits need to be able to slot straight into the first team. Palacious couldn’t do that with us, but he was definitely ready to start for Birmingham.

Hang on though. Just the other day you were suggesting we should stop pinching pennies and up our bid for Arshavin. It’s this prudence that has ensured that we haven’t really been mugged in the transfer market since Jeffers.

Compare our dealing with Spuds, and we look like geniuses!

The good value we get for new players at least partly compensates for any of our squad that have slipped through our fingers.

  177. I mean, 2.75m for RvP. That’s just cracking!

  178. Spuds’

  179. AWs view is that when Eboue plays we score goals…admittedly he has not been at his best…but even in that shocking booing game he was playing really well before he fell to pieces…..involved in some stunning passing moves. I wonder whether opposition defences find him a handful..he draws defenders…and maybe tires them out too…

  180. Palacios.

    Sorry, I’m done.

I hope he finds a palatial residence in N17 (not bloody likely!).

  181. Who built the Arse? Wenger! Wenger!
Who built the Arse? Brother Wenger built the Arse.

  182. The Scientist, Are you Arseblogger in disguise?

  183. In came the players two by two,
    William Gallas and Johan Djourou
In came the players three by three,
    Kolo Toure and Samir Nasri

  184. Eboue mostly does what AW thinks is good for the team, until AW thinks his job is done and subs him. That’s all there is to Eboue.

Sometimes Eboue is sh!t and that’s part of the deal for any player. Actually for any human being. I can do well at my work today, but I can be sh!t tomorrow or feel like I don’t want to work. Nothing outrageous about that, I think the most important thing of all is to give %100 even if your %100 is less quality than someone else’ %00. I think he does that for the most part.

  185. Queen of Suburbia

You’re right Eboue has been done to death…

I just think he’s our weak link…i can even live with Song as holding midfielder if we get a decent ball retainer in at RM.

For me Arshavin is the answer in that position. But Nik B can work if we are chasing a goal. Wouldn’t bring him on there if we are one up though.

  186. I’m the one with many faces Muntazir….I’m The Scientist….boha..hah..hah..hoh..hahahaHAHA

  187. In came the players four by four,
    Nicklas Bendtner and Adebayor
In came the players five by five,
Van Persie broke the net with a 30 yard drive

  188. {That’s my evil scientist laugh by the way}

  189. Queen of Suburbia

Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini and Rosicky – now that was a midfield!

  190. Excellent Poliziano Excellent.

  191. Queen of Suburbia

As long as you’re not *?&$@! ethangunner from le-grove Scientist then you are alright by me.

  192. ….don’t start with boha..it makes people laugh…your supposed to be frightening them…..try waha

  193. Queen of Suburbia

As long as you are not Ethangunner then you are alright by me Scientist!

  194. Nasri, Fabregas, Denilson, Rosicky

    or

Now that’s a better midfield. You can rely on those guys – Flamini and Hleb had neither the heart or the loyalty to make it at the club.

  195. Queen of Suburbia

    Have I gone into moderation?

  196. Queen of Suburbia

I’m taking it that there are websites that cannot be named on here – or in particular a certain cretin who writes

    like this!!!!!!!

    all the time?

  197. Poor Flamini tried hard, but he just wasn’t very good at football.

  198. …I have been Utubing Arshavin….(I know, I know)…..passing ability exceptional (which we all know)….very aware of space….pacy……seems to play down the left or down the middle…but occasionally comes in from the right…not really an out and out right sided player…but I suppose he can adapt…..I like the idea of having four interchangeable players across the middle…

  199. Queen of Suburbia

Flamini made other players good though by doing a lot of work for them.

I’m a big Denilson fan though so high hopes for him.

  200. @ QoS
    lol

    Yes!!!!! or even… YES!!!!!!!

  201. YW is not a moderator…sometimes silly words can get you caught…we rarely mention the other place…it is generally full of doomers….present company excluded of course….

  202. Queen of Suburbia

Me too Frank. Roma used to play sometimes with five roaming forward/midfielders and no out and out striker and it was at time awesome.

  203. I’m curious as to Arshavin’s defensive capabilities. Would he provide cover for Sagna (or Clichy)?

  204. “Roma used to play sometimes with five roaming forward/midfielders and no out and out striker and it was at time awesome”

    Certainly sounds like it!

  205. Queen of Suburbia

Thanks Frank – I’d never say anything bad about that place and I like a lot of the posters there.

    But one in particular!!!!

Is a total and utter twunt!!!!

  206. Queen of Suburbia

I thought United might move that way when they bought Berbatov to be honest. They have Tevez Rooney Berbatov Nasri and Ronaldo all of whom could roam anywhere across the forward line and then have either Carrick or Hargreaves sitting.

    I guess Fergie bottled it!

  207. …..try ‘oh dear oh dear oh dear…..’

  208. …oh f*ck have they bought Nasri?

  209. I’m curious… who is the one with the liberal use of the exclaimation marks ?

  210. You mean Naga Gunner ?

  211. Blinding football by the kids.

  212. Naga Gunner is an acquired taste.

    I’ve never acquired it myself.

So far as I know, neither has anyone else.

  213. I’ll guess Arshavin isn’t fond of tackling.

  214. HA HA HA !!!!!!

    Cheers MATE !!!!!!

  215. Where are you watching this game Big Al ?

  216. I’ve got it … it’s live on Arsenal TV… or live on arsenal tv online.

  217. ffs 1-0 down … sack the board

  218. ATVO, Muppet – Sometimes it’s not a total waste of money!

1-0 Down. Our team should really thrash these boys.

I don’t think they’re talking about Naga. He says some scandalous things about Arsenal, but he’s generally affable.

  219. Sad to see Stoke parking the bus. Really sets them up for great careers! I mean, what do they have to lose at this level, because it’s not just about getting results.

  220. Yes.. thanks Big Al… I have AVTO, I was looking in the match section rather than the live tab.

Yeah.. Naga is quite amenable. Some others are far less agreeable.

  221. Did you just see Wilshere’s goal? Amazing!

  222. Cracking goal by Wilshere!!

  223. **** me… what a goal

  224. Jeez. That was crazy.

  225. Wilshere…. ACLF??

  226. This Coquelin guy is like a little Thierry Henry in a different position 🙂

  227. Is eduardo playing? On the bench?

  228. THE SHOUTY POSTER THAT QoS WAS TALKING ABOUT IS ON ANOTHER BLOG!!!!!!

    It’s not Naga Gunner.

  229. @ Big Al
“Sad to see Stoke parking the bus. Really sets them up for great careers! I mean, what do they have to lose at this level, because it’s not just about getting results.”

How true. On the upside, it’s good practice for our kiddies.

  230. Ateeb Eduardo is playing and missed a chance to score…a bit rusty I’s say.

  231. Yes Ateeb he is playing up front on his own. He’s doing all right but not seeing too much of the ball because Stoke are defending so deep, but he had a good goal scoring chance, which the goalkeeper saved.

  232. – I’s
    + I’d

  233. AW’s world dominance strategy:
make our defense weak to make the opposition have a go rather than park the bus.

But they are still parking bus, sadly..

  234. How did the phrase “parking the bus” come to be applied to football? I have never understood your crazy English phrases.

  235. There it is again!

  236. Told you…we got rid of him with ‘oh dear oh dear oh dear’….begins with E…

    Great goal…

  237. You’re probably right, fungunner.

Bischoff’s looking better by the game. And he’s a number 10. It’d be funny – just to infuriate some fans – if we decide there’s no need to chase Arshavin when we have Bischoff in the ranks.

“Park the bus” is a mourinhism, but it’s a funny exaggeration – to me.

  238. So does it mean that a team defended so well it was as if they had parked a bus in front of the goal? Or is the bus a metaphor for the team, which instead of driving forward towards the opponents goal is kept motionless in its own half? Or is there another explanation?

    You crazy English!

  239. Shame Coquelin has gone off, we seem to have lost our way a little bit.

  240. The question with someone like Wilshire is “is he good enough to be playing first team?”

I’d have to say, regardless of anything else, could Eboue have done the same faced with the position Jack has just scored from…

I’ll let people answer (hint: it’s not a tricky one!)

    😉

  241. I’m not english but there’s a story in Argentina that uses the same metaphore. The teams come to the ground in the team bus, don’t they? So a great way to protect the goal would be to park the bus in front of it, thus blocking it. Well, there’s a famous coach in Argentina that once said “we are being very unlucky. If we park the bus, they make us a goal through an open window”. Classic.

  242. I can’t find a stream. It looks like a very interesting match I’m missing. Any updates?

  243. I can’t find a stream. It looks like a very interesting match I’m missing. Any updates?

  244. Did Randall read the posts here on today before the match? He seems to be really off form.

  245. Randall, what were you thinking? Only JT and Wazza can get away with two-footed over the top tackles!

  246. Gone to pieces now. Lessons being learned here I hope. Stoke are poor, but we seem to have got frustrated by their tactics. Kiss of death for Randall!

Yeah, the “park the bus” expression really only applies to an away team; when they arrive at the ground and defend deep, pack the midfield.

  247. Wilshere again!

  248. wilshere is superbe,what a player

  249. Wilshere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  250. Jack’s first goal. Click on my nick.

  251. by the way,
don’t the arsenal babies look adorable in away kits? 🙂

  252. Rui Fonte looks good so far…

  253. Eduardo scores but it’s offside!

  254. off-side unfortunetly

  255. For those not watching – Eduardo just scored but flagged offside (no confirmation yet by replay) but important thing was he slid it under the keeper nicely and made a neat run to meet it…

  256. Great pass from Wilshere, shame Fonte couldn’t get to it.

  257. wilshere is impressive

  258. Living dangerously now. Come on Arsenal get the ball forward

  259. Wish I was watching the reserves play, would love to see the JW goal.
Probably stating the obvious but I think this kid will be a first team regular within 18 months. He is actually very strong for his age too. Imagine him at 21. Blimey, he is a £10m player before he has even started a premiership game.

I am liking Nik B at RM more and more, might be a stretch to start him there in Prem games, he is bound to have some positional issues there. But bringing him on there when we are chasing a game makes perfect sense to me.

Really can’t be arsed with this Arshavin nonsense. If he really wanted to come to play for us, the deal would be done.

Lastly, I recall Palacios was on trial with us a while ago – AW rated him but at the time we were choc-a-bloc of v good midfielders. AW thought he was Prem quality, but saw he was behind about 8 players before he would get a start – and didn’t think that was fair on the guy. Hence Steve Bruce got the call as he had done a good job with some of our loanees.
Wenger is like that – it’s why players want to play for him – he tries to do the right thing and treats people with respect.

But let’s remember – Palacios has played 37 Prem games for Wigan – and the spuds pay £14m for him. It defies belief. They are just wasting the Berbatov and Keane money.

They are a point off the bottom of the league. They need a new stadium. Compare and contrast.

    Come on Arsenal.

  260. Well that was entertaining. We’re so good going forward, but our defence. Oh man.

Wilshere definitely plays best with free rein in the middle.

  261. I don’t think that Randall’s tackle was that bad….from the original camera angle it looked bad…a two footed tackle…but from the second angle one foot was on the floor and the other foot on the ball….the linesman made the refs decision and the linesman was looking from the original camera angle…..

  262. We came close to losing the game at the end, but fortunately luck was on our side. Reserves for us is more about player development than the result and there were some good things in midfield and going forward. Randall needs to cut out the ‘industrial’ tackling, but he will learn in time. Defending was a bit suspect, but it is not a settled back 4 and you could see the jitters after conceding the first goal. Wilshere is a star in the making. Merida has an eye for a pass and it was great to see Eduardo last for 90 minutes. Excellent evenings work by the Gunners.

  263. I think it was the way Randall jumped into the tackle. If his feet were off the ground, the ref would have seen it as him not being in control of the tackle, hence reckless, hence the card, I suppose.

  264. I like the idea of having an industrial tackler – not to make a habit of it, but to make the opposition think twice about their own industrial tackles.

  265. How did it end? I didn’t watch the 2nd half

  266. 2-2. Both sides could have won it – we went close about three times after Randall got sent off.

  267. Thank you FunGunner, oh well…it’s good practice for the boys. Who scored the 2nd for us?

  268. wilshere

  269. Wilshere scored both goals. Eduardo had one disallowed, which possibly wasn’t offside.

  270. Good for Wilshere….I heard Eduardo played the full 90 minutes too which is great.

  271. Excellent last 20 minutes, wasn’t it….Jay Thomas looks like a leader…really took the game by the scruff of the neck….Rui Fonte looks very sharp…Eduardo is really coming back to fitness..Bischoff looks very interesting….Fran Merida needs to look up a bit more but has a hell of a pass……and Jack….Jack is Jack…great stuff…

Horrible the way the Stoke youngsters are are being taught to play such negative football..the Phillips twins looked good though.

  272. Very composed player, that Jay Thomas. And I gather he can play anywhere in midfield or defence, is that true?

  273. 2-0 Burnley COME ON!

  274. Apparently he is under 18 captain…at 16…that is impressive…got 6 goals

  275. Wow. Good for Jay. I guess that’s why he has that air of assurance.

  276. It would have been so much fun to see our CC team against Spurs. Oh well.

  277. Fu*k him,we dont need arshavin!!

I dont want our club getting mugged on this one. wenger knows not to pay £20mil for him so if ze russians want that then bollox to them.

  278. Excuse me – sorry for the outburst – please carry on. I concur by the way Frank, great the way the team found some real fight after the sending off. Eduardo starting to look a tiny bit sharper & Wilshere has real vision doesn’t he?

  279. I know only a few will make it at arsenal, but hope to have as many of them as possible – they are really special..

What a star Jack’s gonna be in the very near future..my favorite photo of him…

    http://www.daylife.com/photo/06JH9en3dZ6Lx/jack_wilshere

  280. Nice picture TC…he makes me feel like he’s my kid brother 🙂

  281. 4-4 on aggregate! Come on Burnley!!!

  282. Burnley 3—-Tottenham 0!

  283. Is there extra time or do away goals count?

  284. What happens if the scoreline remains as now?
Away goal advantage? or Extra time?
    Come on Burnley!

  285. extra time, according to BBC.

  286. It seems away goals do count, but only after extra time.

  287. 4-4 aggregate… they’ll have to play again !! 🙂

  288. No PonyBoy… if it’s 4-4 after extra time.. Burnley go through !!

  289. No – you’re right pz.. extra-time goals…bugger!

  290. Really ? Park the bus !

  291. Hatred is so akin to love.. Burnley !!

  292. Hatred akin to love? Yes, as black to white.

  293. shit!!!!

  294. That was a nasty nasty moment…

  295. ok… all over.. black on black..

  296. What’s all this after extra time nonsense. The rules clearly benefited Spuds, but did they deserve it ?

  297. Ponyboy,

    yes they are!!

  298. What a shame for Burnley – they should have won on the away goals rule after the 90 minutes. The extra time gave spurs a get out of jail free card as Burnley just couldn’t hang on against fitter PL opposition. Those spuds are really leading a charmed life!

  299. sorry Ponyboy that was a rhetorical answer there.

  300. Charmed ’til they get creamed by manure!

  301. The rule really benefitted Burnley, as it meant they enjoyed home-advantage for the majority of the tie.

  302. You hate Spurs more than united? Madness!

  303. Hopefully the Mancs will beat them to the Tin Cup or we will never hear the end of it from delirious Spuds if they win it again.

At least the Mancs will not brag too much about winning the tin cup.

  304. Would anyone be upset if the Spud’s won the league cup as last year if they repeated the results they had after winning it last year?

  305. pz – it’s a weird one.. to be beaten by spurs is worse; yet to beat manure is better..

  306. I certainly don’t want them winning back to back CC finals, there’ll be no living with them!

  307. Mmm..sounds like an S&M comment, that.

  308. I could live with them winning it, if they get relegated on the back of it – it won’t feel like much of a compensation for them then! Would they still be allowed in Europe?

  309. “Beating the manure”

Is that another of your funny English phrases?

  310. Okay. It’s settled. If you let Spurs beat united, I’ll let them get relegated.

  311. They only managed 3 wins after winning the league cup last year. That would certainly mean relagation. Arsenal’s finances are constantly under the microscope but the Spud’s spend money like it is water (On mostly piss poor players). They must be subsidised by there owner. With relagation and the drop in income, plus players who they have paid a lot of money for who would look to leave (At a fraction of the money paid) they could find themselves in a very nasty position.

  312. Consolsbob probably knows more about it.. he’d add eggs though.

  313. They are always in a ‘nasty position’ Marc….

  314. Ponyboy – I’m not talking about a heavy Friday night out and where the f*ck am I nasty situation. I’m talking about losing £20 million pounds worth of income in TV money and £60 – £80 million worth of players leaving for £10 – £20 million. Plus a drop in sponsership revenue and reduced ticket sales.

  315. Fascinating Fact:
The word “manure” derives from the same root as “manoeuvre,” the Latin manuoperare, formed from manus (hand) and operari (to work). Manure was something worked by hand into the land.

  316. Poliziano – For a minute I thought you were gojng to suggest something about a hand job. Would have been more fitting!

  317. Poliziano get out of here !!

  318. I thought Manure means:

    1. excrement, esp. of animals, or other refuse used as fertilizer.
    2. any natural or artificial substance for fertilizing the soil.
–verb (used with object) 3. to treat (land) with fertilizing matter; apply manure to.

That’s why I always say Man Ure thinking that I’m liking them to a fertilizar?? 🙂

  319. Get your coat Poliziano…

  320. Haha.. the things one learns! So manure are wankers.. spurs are in a nasty position…

    Sounds good!!

  321. I agree with MUPPET!!

  322. What have I done?

  323. We could actually see the perfect couple of seasons coming up. Chelsea and Liverpool going tits up, the Spuds relagated and ManU’s debts catching up with them and limiting there spending.

  324. “Beating the manure” sounds like an interesting manoeuvre, or should it be man oeuvre, or perhaps even man ouvrir.

  325. Not really sure Poliziano but Muppet siad “Get out of here Poliziano”

  326. Is it the etymology you dislike, or my preference for Spurs over united?

  327. Neither Poliziano…I guess I just followed Muppet without reading. That Muppet can mislead you sometimes….. 🙂

  328. “Okay. It’s settled. If you let Spurs beat united, I’ll let them get relegated.”

It’s a deal – can you guarantee it though?

  329. Can I guarantee it?

    No. Sorry.

Are you saying, G4E, that you’ve become Muppet’s puppet?

  330. Ok, now your really need to get your coat 🙂

  331. Just joking Poliziano…

  332. I disagree with Muppet now, and agree with G4E!!

  333. Ok guys…can we have some common grounds to settle this issue?

  334. We are just too funny…

Ateeb agrees with me but I’m not sure on what.
I jokingly agreed with Muppet, but not really sure on what.
Poliziano doesn’t really know what the hell is going on, and Muppet turns out to be joking (I’m still not sure on what)….Can anybody help us here? 🙂

  335. Has anyone else seen the story re: Forbes most valuble list of sports teams? 7 of the 10 are American Football. But the other 3 are all football teams. ManU are top of the list, Real Madrid are 6th and we are just behind in 7th. No Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona etc. And all we ever hear is Arsenal are f*ucked.

  336. Why can’t Zenit do the sensible thing and le Arshavin go surely he dowsn’t want to play for them anymore. according to the Times Arshavin said “I see Arsenal as my team of the future. Everything now depends on Zenit. If they want to sell me, they can do it very quickly.” “My intentions to leave the club have not changed since the summer,” . “It is obvious that in these times of [financial] crisis, no one will offer such a big amount. Zenit have to think realistically. I believe that Arsenal’s offer is much closer to my real value in the transfer market at the moment.”

Marc- the Forbes list is based on income generated. If it wasn’t for the debts we would have lots of surplus cash for new players.

  337. Le Gunner – I wasn’t criticising Arsenal but pointing out how strong we actually are. As for the debts I believe ours are in the region of £350 million, all based on acquiring an income generating asset. ManU have debts somewhere between £700 – £800 million with no benefit.

  338. It really is getting to the point where, for all his inexperience and the mistakes he could make, Wilshere would still add something to the first team if he got his chance.

I agree with Arseblog this morning, but I still think Eboue’s role isn’t really about getting goals and assists. He is definitely there to give the ball to more talented players and keep things tight defensively on the right hand side. He’s also an athletic guy and adds a bit of brute force to the team.

It must be tempting for Wenger to give Jack a go, but I can understand why he wouldn’t.

  339. Jack’s skill is evident…he is a talented footballer and will go very far….his time in the first team will come sooner rather than later….but we have to remember that he was playing against the Stoke youngsters….he might not yet have the ability to really get stuck into the opposition provided by Prem first team sides….we will see

One thought on Mark Randall…before YW does his bit for today…..he is all there but for his physical development…AW commented on that…he is a late developer…physically….I think he compensates for that by throwing himself into tackles….he is a brave lad and he has attitude…I like the attitude bit….and I reckon he has a better chance of succeeding at AFC than people think…again we will see

Really is a great day to be a gooner

  340. I think Mark Randall knows he has the ability, but gets frustrated when he makes mistakes that he knows he should avoid. It’s not the first time we’ve seen him go in for rash tackles. He still has a fair bit to learn.

Although it was a very young Stoke team, they were just as organised as their seniors. That horrible football is clearly part of a ugly survival strategy that pervades the club. I imagine it’s simple to makes those tactics work, provided every player knows his role and set-pieces are well-drilled.

And take Jack’s first goal; that just shows you the level of his talent, and had nothing to do with Stoke’s weakness. It was magnificent individual skill, and the showed the kind of imagination that we’re perhaps lacking with Fabregas and Rosicky out.

I don’t know, Frank. Like you say – let’s wait and see.

  341. Jack’s goal last night was a beauty the way he curled the ball around the keeper was just amazing.Tehnically very gifted. He is Berkamp.

  342. Jeez, I really should read over what I write. You get the gist though!

  343. Indeed it is Frank.

    Wilshere is very small.

At the momemt the problem is that he would make fools of a few oafs who are told to “get in Arsenal’s faces” and they will kick him seriously. Let him fill out a bit, let us get back to strength and I think Wenger will unleash him bit by bit. Longer and longer.

Probably won’t get much taller though. Scholes never did despite being surrounded by manure all those years. (one for Ponyboy there).

I was tryng to think of who else might have scored that first goal and could only think of Denis.

  344. It’s not just having the technical ability to score goals like that. It’s also having the chutzpah* to use it – Dennis had chutzpah – so does Jack.
(* for the etymologists: chutzpah – effrontery, nerve – from Yiddish – no I’m not – guess I could just have said balls but chutzpah is so much more satisfying to say – Jack has chutzpah – Arsenal need a bit of chutzpah – try saying it, you’ll love it)

On another track, I read this morning in the grauniad online that ManUre (Poliziano – does masturbate come from the same Latin stem?) have injury problems – big problems – in their defence. Just the news I was looking for.

  345. No. Masturbate comes from masturbari, which means to masturbate.

  346. Correct me if i’m wrong here, but are we not in a win/win situation with Arshavin?

If our offer for Arshavin is the only one that Zenit have, then Zenit currently have two options: Make some money out of Arshavin (12m) while they can, or eventually lose him on a bosman. Perhaps our stingy offer is less to do with our financial situation, and more to do with Wenger and the board putting Zenit in a stalemate position where they end up being forced to sell Arshavin on the cheap to prevent losing him for absolutely zilch. Genius! Or until City come in on the last day of the window with a 20m offer much like they did with Robinho of course.

  347. Consolsbob, Yes Dennis, or perhaps Pires too. It was a great goal. Only a matter of time for Jack. Same can be said for Francis Coq.

  348. According to the BBC, four big-name players have now thumbed their noses at City: David Villa, Gianluigi Buffon, Thierry Henry, and of course Kaka. Despite Darth Diesel’s best efforts, all the best players are refusing to turn to the dark side.

  349. Blackstock – City’s problem at the moment that, despite the money, everybody is telling them to f-off. If Kaka had said yes, they might well have been able to attract others, but his refusal may prove significant.

  350. City are putting the cart before the horse really. They need to be a top6 team before they will be able to attract the biggest names.

They’d probably get Arshavin if they wanted him though.

  351. New contract rumoured for Eboue.

    Let’s offer him 60k a week.

  352. City will probably be relegated this season. It will be interesting to see if Sheikh Sourman will continue his investment.

  353. I wonder if Sheikh Sourman is satisfied with the prestige he has brought to himself and his country so far.

  354. My brother is the Dealer Principle at the Ferrari dealership in Manchester – he has been to a few Charity balls with the Man City owners and by all accounts they are not overly happy!

  355. Poliziano- I don’t think it was down to the players Buffon Henry and Villa didn’t go to city it wasn’t down to the players but their clubs because of City’s Zillions the clubs sked for silly money juve wanted 100 million for Buffon (a 30 year old Keeper for goodness sake) Valencia wanted 135 million for Villa and Silva, Barcelona wanted 25 million for Henry who is in his final days of his career even KAKA the story we heard that KAKA refused to join City and was portrayed as some sort of angel but that wasn’t the case KAKA agreed to join City but His dad his agent wanted to be payed ridiculous money too for his role. And city Realized they were taken for a ride my point is the players and thier clubs are greedy there are no exceptions.
