Arsenal 2 – 1 Tottenham Hotspur

1 – 0 Adebayor (48)
1 – 1 Berbatov (66)
2 – 1 Bendtner (76)

If Tottenham ever launch a TV channel, it can be dismissed for showing old comedy repeats in much the same way that the BBC schedule every festive season. An Arsenal win by two goals to one, following a below-par performance; comedy defending, a penalty miss which would have given Tottenham the lead and very possibly the points and the Arsenal bar rattled when it was easier to score. We have seen it all before and will probably see it again. This was a throwback to the 1980s trips to White Hart Lane when 2 – 1 was as de rigueur as the Fila Polar Neck.

The first half was possibly the poorest Arsenal have played at The Emirates this season. Their game never got going; they were never allowed to settle. In fairness, that was partially due to Tottenham whose organisation on the pitch was probably better than they have managed in a North London derby for over a decade. The midfield never clicked into gear although the signs were there that they would do so when a neat passing sequence allowed Flamini to send in a shot to the side-netting. It was however a cameo.

Towards the end of the half though, the signs were there that things were improving as Robinson made solid saves from Toure and Eboue. That said Tottenham rarely threatened and when they did, Sagna’s head was in the way. Indeed, the Frenchman’s inability to get forward constructively was one of the most striking points about the performance in the first half. The verve with which he is able to get forward normally was missing.

As disjointed as the first half had been, the second kicked off with the panache normally associated with an Emirates match. Rosicky and Fabregas sliced open Tottenham, the latter’s backheel set Adebayor free in the box to compose himself and score confidently past Robinson. Tottenham were rattled and moments later, Fabregas shot high and wide when setting Eboue free would have been the better option, acknowledged by the Spaniard immediately after the ball had left his foot.

The visitors regrouped and had their best spell of the game. I still cannot work out how Keane hit the bar although I will confess to not giving it much thought, being more relieved than anything else. The respite was brief as Berbatov was worked into a position in the box which allowed him to toe-poke the ball with ferocity past Almunia. To blame the ‘keeper would be harsh, the pace on the shot being the reason it entered the net although Jens Lehmann probably thought it should have been stopped.

Any schadenfreude on his part was short-lived when Keane’s penalty was hit too close to Almunia who saved well. There can be no arguments with the decision, Toure clearly following through onto Berbatov. Unlike the other penalty shouts, Rob Styles got this right. How the fouls on Rosicky were not given is beyond me. Probably for the first one, Styles was using Graham Poll’s trademark ‘I was watching the upper part of the body’ theory for foul play but the second one was purely impeding the run of an opponent, a body Czech to stop Rosicky receiving the pass. That said, Sagna caught Taarabt late on so relief counters the frustration to some extent.

The winner when it came will pass into the pantheon of inspired substitutions. Well, OK, Arsene got a tad lucky with the timing. Ramos must still be banging the brick wall with his head for no matter how Gus Poyet might like to claim that an Arsenal attacker – Gallas, I think – blocked off Chimbonda’s run, the simple fact is that the Tottenham defender ran straight into the back of him. Peter Sellers would have killed for such comic timing. The error allowed Bendtner to rise unchallenged and power the ball home.

A good win, three points and an ideal Christmas Present for everyone connected with the club. The coming visits to Portsmouth and Everton have been set-up nicely by this result although one would hasten to add that the performance levels will need to be upped somewhat to take the points. Now if that nice Mr Claus could see his way to curing van Persie’s thigh strain, I am sure that Arsene would suitably grateful.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. arsenal is the best!!

  2. Excellent review Yogi as usual, its difficult to put your finger on why we were so poor yesterday. Normally a local derby inspires players and fans alike but the game for long periods as you rightly say was as flat as a pancake. In fairness it looked like we were the team that had the hard game in the week.
Perhaps it was our creative department just back from injury that still havnt got to the pace yet, Cesc had his worst game of the season but still managed to make the breakthrough with a sublime bit of magic.
Another reason and Gazzap touched on it last night
is the formation we play with just Ade up front, i find this hard to understand why we have to deploy this tactic at home when we should be going for it with two strikers.
I can see why we should play this 4-5-1 away and especially in europe but with our talent we should be murdering teams at home, but im not going to criticise Arsene, who am i to say anything against the great man.
We are top of the league at almost the half way point, things could be a lot worse!
    Come on you Gunners!
Finally i would like to wish all you fellow Gooners wherever you are in the world a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and see you all in the new year, lets hope its a great one!

  3. Suggested yesterday that Almunia or any keeper should save that shot everytime, that was disservice to him. Having viewed the replay a couple of times, there really was not much time to react.

I still believe a few world class keepers may have pulled off a world class tip over but it was no gimme. For me, any issue with Almunia does relate to his keeping of incoming near post strikes, where he tends to look vulnerable and lack the required sharpness to make the big stops.

That said, it was overall a good day for him, with a penalty save that embedded him into the hearts of fans and his fellow defenders. The reaction to him at the end of the games was deserved.

Close call yesterday, but one of the kind we are well used to. Under par, for sure, but with a gear to go to.

Great run from Fab for the first goal, the kind he would simply not have made in the first half. When he was struggling to influence proceedings with his precision passing, he now knows to make the kind of driving runs that make the killer ball easier to come by.

What a great start to the season, not sure if it was Hansen or Shearer but someone acknowledged this Arsenal team are not about to go away without a fight.

Yogi, if Santa is to drop by, I’ll have Everton to keep their run going at Old Trafford.

  4. Merry xmas Gooners everywhere. I’m off to buy a comedy DVD of s Spuds player running into the back of Gallas! Top of the league!

  5. There is one replay of the Spurs equaliser that clearly shows Berbatov’s shot was deflected, off Toure if I recall correctly. Therefore there was very little Almunia could do about it.

  6. Danny

I agree, Manuel was chanted to a very loud and sustained period of having his name sung loudly by the whole stadium.

I felt for poor Jens at that point!

And ‘Super Nicklas Bendtner’ has now earned his own song!

  7. This may be a stupid question but what happened to van persie?

  8. Just a knock or something! Meant to be fine for boxing day!

Just thought of another thing I’ll have for Christmas. Milan derby. Another one of those metatarsel jobs for Kaka.

  9. Agreed that it was a tough one to block…but he had time to get his body on the line of the shot…near post has been his weaknes (remember the CL final)

  10. Robin Van Helsing

    Poor Performance, good result

I wonder about our defense though, we seem to concede a lot of goals, yet individually, our defense is world class :

RB – Sagna: good defensive ability, delivers a great cross and makes good runs, high quality all round

LB – Clichy: Pace, technique, sound defensively though i would like him to make more runs forward down the laft flank and get some crosses in the penalty area like sagna on the opposite side (and like traore does)

CB -Toure : genuine world class defender, solid, reliable, pacy, good tackle; giving away a few pens lately though and should take less free kicks IMO

CB – Gallas : also world class, leader on the pitch, good technique and pace

GK -Almunia : has had his critics, but at the moment he deserves the no.1 spot

So why do we concede so many goals? maybe they’re not working so well as a unit and it will take time…any thoughts anyone?

  11. Robin Van Helsing – the defence can’t do it all by themselves. They also need the midfield to help out and the fact that our midfield have not quite been firing on all cylinders lately might contribute to the number of goals conceded.

  12. Why do we concede so many goals? Let me give it a try, Van Helsing. It underlines the fact that both in our structure and personality we are an attack-oriented team. Our defenders epitomize this; both full-backs have license to forage forward at any opportunity. Our center-halves are not shy about going into the opposing half. Gallas himself has scored three goals in the league, our third highest. In middle we simply don’t have a classic holding midfielder shielding our defenders. Flamini roams the park supporting Cesc and the wide players, going forward at every opportunity, and when defending it is the harrying and closing down of opponents. He is not a passive-reactive defender like Gilberto. Eboue plays a strange role. He is a wide player with obvious defensive responsibilities, to fall back and support Sagna whenever we lose the ball. Invariably he is the outlet for Sagna’s clearances.
I saw a remarkablke stat on yesterdays game; of all the midfielders, only Flamini and Eboue successfully tackled and won any balls back from Spurs. Remarkable.

This type of structure and personality always gives teams a chance to counter-attack us and score when we lose the ball because they have a better chance of a mismatch in number of attackers vs defenders. (In the case of ManU, Sir Alex acted to cure this potential mismatch by going overboard to get Hargreaves and together with Andersen they form a shield in front a pair of already excellent central defenders.)

Too many bloggers fail to see the dilemma facing Wenger when seeking the correct balance between defenders and attackers. His solution is to rely heavily on Eboue, a converted defender now right midfielder. The ManU game when attacker Walcott replaced Eboue, which Evra immediately took advantage of by setting up a goal, validated Wenger’s thinking. He no longer replaces Eboue with Walcott.

It is impossible at this point for Wenger to change the structure and personality of his team, i.e. he cannot stick a holding midfielder in the team as he loses the attacking impetus, hence Gilberto’s cameo appearances. Those clamoring for an attacking 4-4-2, be careful what you wish for. The cold statistical world suggests we will leak even more goals than before. If we concede first then be certain our opponents will park the bus in front of goal and seek to deny us. Wenger is a thinking man and also quite ruthless if you think about it. Early on he said he is playing with the handbrake on. I doubt he will release it any time soon.

  13. they say the champions to be always ride their luck to win certain games,we did that against Tttenham…and i’ve jus een manUre do thesame after getting a pen to win it in the las few minutes when the game was going towards a draw…so its defnitly going to be a hell of a ride this season

    We Gunner Gunn Em…

  14. Robin Van Helsing

I agree that we are an attack minded offensive team – but so are United, and they have the best defense, in fact thats the only reason they are close to us in the table – i would even say, without ronaldo, united look distinctly shit (the press are too afraid to say this, they just shout out names like tevez, anderson and nani or wotever, knowing full well c.ronaldo is miles ahead of all their other players), but they’ve won a lot of 1-0s so far.

I’m glad we dont play like them God forbid..it would just be nice to see some more clean sheets rather than these nailbiting 2-1s.

Shotta – I agree with your analysis mostly, our defense is essentially that we keep the ball most of the time, therefore we nullify the others attack –

maybe its too much asking for a free scoring side who keep it tight at the back

    – oh and Eboue should defintely make way for RVP when he comes back, with Hleb going to the right, for me RVP, Cesc and Hleb are a level above the rest

  15. Anybody watching the Milan Derby? Ist half just finished and what a match! Who said Milan are a bunch of old men? They may have some ol boys but they sure still pack some juice.

We should never give away free kicks in dangerous areas, because of the dangerman Pirlo! And Kaka.. Sure AW is watching!

  16. Inter 2 AC Milan 1

Having watched this match, I think we can beat Milan! Their strongest points are a solid defence, good midfield and good free kick specialist.

In our match with them, I hope we can try shots from outside the 18 which will definitely cause Dida problems. We should avoid playing deep and conceeding free kicks in dangerous areas.

  17. Good Victory over the spuds, And as ever just watched the Man’ure game V Everton . They played better than V’s Liverpool last week but really could not justify the 3 points .. A free penalty with 2 minutes to go gives them 3 more undeserved points … A draw should of been the result . They looked flat even on there home ground .. Good to see .. The chev’s are up at 1/2 time so i suppose we can expect the table to stay the same . Just a single point ..
Good job alumina !!! Eoube also had a blinder of a game !! joint MoM ! ..
Ade’s 1st half was rubbish… But with all that supply from the creative department ,it was hard not to score . EVERYTHING up to the 26th minute that he touched either got the ball out of play -stopped the flow of the game or just straight out coffed up possession ! special moments of interest .. at minutes 4-10-12-14-16-17 23-26 i gave up counting after that 🙂

Also bentner is a legend, it took him 30 seconds !
1st touch of the game !! He’s knocking on the door ade 🙂 !

  18. Good analysis there Shotta. If Wenger is playing 4-5-1 (which is actually more like 4-4-1-1) there has to be a reason. We may not be blowing teams away, but we’re getting the results with this formation. We need to perfect it for those tough European games when we cannot afford to go gung-ho with 4-4-2. Wenger often switches to 4-4-2 late on with the introduction of Bendtner or Walcott after the game is stretched and the opposition have started to tire. So far so good. We need to mix things up a little and win a bit pragmatically at times. We cannot play the expansive style at all times as that must take a lot out of the players. Controlling the key moments is what matters most.

  19. Shotta

You are the voice of reason.

The only thing I would disagree with is your assessment of 4-4-2. I think with RvP playing alongside Ade we will often find him dropping into midfield to help out and as a result I don’t think we lose much solidity. I think Wenger prefers Hleb there in his absence purely because we lose the cohesion between Midfield and attack otherwise – that is testament to RvPs ability.

The thing that puzzled me most yesterday was our willingness to drop deep and concede possession around the half way line.

I was not sure if it was a symptom of the general malaise afflicting the entire team or a tactical move.

It was symptomatic of the same problem which seemed to reduce our movement off the ball and the speed and accuracy of our passing.

I don’t think we have anything to worry about though – just an off day in the office.

    Ethan

If your going to count up Ade’s mistakes it is only fair to count up the good things he did as well.

How about the beautiful chip into the box for Flamini in the first few minutes?

Or the accomplished finish for the first goal?

How about his driving runs diagonally across the defence into Spurs territory drawing free kicks and bookings?

Or perhaps the total panic that ensued in the heart of the Spurs defence during the only decent spell we had just after the first goal – all Ade related.

You also have not tallied up the occasions when bendtner lost possession as a result of dwelling on the ball.

When we dislike a player, fair enough, but we’ve got to hold our hands up to the good things they do as well as the bad.

Judging by the fact Ade’s name was sung loudest than any other I’d say the crowd appreciate his qualities.

  20. Great review as usual, YW. Thanks!

On the Milan derby, I started watching from like 20 mins onwards. Wasn’t as exciting as I’d thought it would be. Apart from Kaka and Gilardino, nobody in the Milan team showed great pace. Also a bit disappointing to see Maldini headed the ball into Cambiasso’s path which gave him the goal, which Dida could have at least given it a better try to save but didn’t. Yes Pirlo’s one of the best players in free kicks (just behind Juninho I think, while Ronaldinho’s been off recently) and really precise in passing – Cesc last year reminded me a bit of him actually. But their goalkeeping is their weakest link. Neither did Ambrossini seem Milan class to be honest. Inter’s defence on the other hand looked solid, attack also sharp. I think Liverpool got themselves a worse draw than ours.

On our formation, I added on the previous thread that RvP was out (knock), Theo out (flu), and the 2 subs Bendtner and Eduardo both played 120 mins at Blackburn on Tue. Then they travelled back to London, only had 2 full days’ rest and then were in the squad to face Spurs in an early kickoff on Sat. Having said that to explain the yet again 4-4-1-1, I also hope Arsene plays a proper 4-4-2, especially at home. And I’d say we can do that even away at Portsmouth as their home record strangely hasn’t been impressive, despite their good form this year.

On RvP, the Times reported that ‘Arsenal expect to be strengthened by the return of Robin van Persie, absent yesterday with a minor muscle strain, for the Boxing Day match at Portsmouth. “He could have played today if I’d really needed him, but I didn’t want to take the risk,” ‘ Great news!

On our defensive record, I don’t think it’s all that bad given the amount of goals we score. Our goal diff is still 2nd best in the league at 21, vs ManU’s 23 with their rock-solid defence who, like Shotta rightly pointed out, had 2 DM’s in front of them. In terms of number of goals conceded:
Manu 9 goals conceded, goal difference 23
Chelsea: 10, but goal difference is only 14
    Liverpool: 11, 20
Man City (#4 in the table): 20, 5
We aren’t that bad are we? Let’s not forget that Gallas sat out a few games at the start of the season and missed 1/3 of our league matches. Kolo (only player ever-present in our league campaign) started 18 games, Gallas 12. Like you guys said, defence is about partnership and understanding. And don’t we see the ever-improvement in our defensive pairing? I think we’re reasonably reliable there. That’s why the only potential worry I have is those 6 weeks in Jan-Feb when Kolo goes away. Whereas Eboue is fairly replaceable if Hleb and Theo stay fit, or (God forbid) simply not get injured at the same time!

Yes it’s called the champions’ luck I guess. And Arsene’s correct in saying that it’s a sign of champions that we come up with a win even when don’t play well, which we can’t always expect to be the case.

Isn’t it fitting that two guys called Emmanuel and Nickolas have given us a great Christmas! Sorry for the long post. Enjoy the holidays and wish you guys a very happy new year too!

  21. The “Spain derby” is much better than the Milan one. Van Nistelrooy volleyed the ball to our old boy Julio Baptista who made no mistake and hit it into the top corner with a great finish! Now THIS is a derby! Fancy drawing one of them after we go past Milan, anyone?

  22. If they suggest that their defender was blocked by Gallas during Bendtner goal is a joke itself, the guy ran into Gallas like running into a brickwall head first, if anything he should be punished for running ricklessly into people like that.

  23. I’ve just seen the end of the Osasuna match. Great play by Vela for their third on the last minute!

If we manage to win the following two games we’ll be in a nice position for the new year. But I’m worried by the fact that no one is taking points off United.

  24. Good point about Emmanuel and Nicolas Louisa. I hadn’t spotted that before!

  25. Yes it will be interesting if and when we revert to 4-4-2. Yes Joseph K, With RVP, I have less fear of being overly offensive as he does tend to play a little behind Ade and will drop back to help out in midfield. Assuming Eboue gets the hook as most posters suggest, then such a midfield would comprise from L-R Rosicky, Flamini Fabregas and Hleb. None of them love sitting back and shielding the defenders and apart from Flamini, none are good tacklers and ball winners. With ManU breathing down our necks, I am sure those gung-ho gooners will be as happy as clams. (BTW: the Eboue-haters will soon have their wishes come true when he leaves for the ACN in Jan. Then the tire will truly hit the road).

  26. Passenal, sorry, correction: THREE guys called (Em)manuel and Nickolas made our Christmas a truly happy one! (“Manuel” is a Spanish variation of “Emmanuel” too hehee.) Merry Christmas to all of us sitting on top of the tree! 🙂

  27. Great win, because it is a hardfought victory. Great grit and determination. It was a nailbiter. This is the type of match we would have drawn last season, same like the matches against Chelsea, Aston Villa, Man City, and would have lost the match against MU.

They all played well enough, despite not playing at their best. I particularly liked the contribution of Clichy. He is much better than Cashley at left back. Cesc’s radar was off, his passes were intercepted regularly, but his most telling contribution led to Ade’s goal. Sheer class!

I don’t have the stats, but I reckon this Spurs team had intercepted the most passes from us of all matches played this season. This is not good, but I put it down as good Spurs’ anticipation.

Roll on Portsmouth. Hope we beat them comfortably, and no more nailbiters.

  28. Just a note on cristiano ronaldo, since the time they played us (including that game), cronaldo has scored 8 in the league, and the whole of the rest of the team combined has scored 4. That is what I would call a one-man team.

Our stats, in comparison, look like: adebayor: 4, rest of team, 10.

I do hope Cronaldo picks up an injury, honestly.

  29. As Manu is breathing down our neck, i have an eerie feeling that we wont see 4-4-2 as often we did. Calculated risks pays off and after 60 or 70 minutes we can shift the formation as we are the “late goal kings”

  30. Good result considering how poor Ade was again.Terrible performance apart from the goal.Winning but definately not beautiful at times.

  31. woke up in a cold sweat last night!!
had a nightmare that gallas got injured in jan and we had song and senderos as our defence!!
    fubar!!
