Young Guns Go For It

Carling Cup Quarter Final
Blackburn Rovers 2 – 3 Arsenal

0 – 1 Diaby (6)
0 – 2 Eduardo (29)
1 – 2 Santa Cruz (42)
2 – 2 Santa Cruz (60)
2 – 3 Eduardo (104)

An excellent win in a pulsating cup-tie. The match will have done more for the young players’ football education than a season in reserves football can achieve. Out-passing, out-thinking, out-fighting their opponents, even when reduced to ten men allowed them to rightly progress to the semi-finals where they will face stronger opposition. For those who criticise Arsene for his choice in fielding inexperienced players in this competition, this is yet another finger raised in their direction. The record in recent seasons of reaching the last eight, four and the final earlier this year is better than any number of teams who field their strongest XI.

Two goals ahead in the opening half an hour meant that the gears shifted into cruise control. All three of the goals were ‘trademark’ Arsenal efforts. In the sixth minute, Randall and Hoyte performed a neat interchange of passes, the former releasing Bendtner on the right side of the area. The young Dane crossed to Diaby who showed great technique to control his volley past Friedel. Minutes later, Bendtner was set free on the left, strode away from Samba and curled an audacious chip onto the crossbar. The Blackburn defence was rocking and rolling in the aisles with no answers. The second arrived after a longer interlude than it seemed would be required. Denilson and Hoyte worked space for the Brazilian on the halfway line. He was allowed to run unchallenged and hit a pass that travelled one third of the pitch. Samba can have no excuses for failing to intercept; he did not though and Eduardo was given time to control it and set himself to slip the ball past the advancing Friedel. Two nil and it seemed that a rout would ensue.

That it did not arrive was in part due to poor officiating. Blackburn needed some luck to get the ball into the net. The Assistant Referee was a matter of feet away from the action and in line with the last defender so it is inexplicable how he failed to give Derbyshire offside. He did not and the Blackburn forward took full advantage, curling in a great cross for Santa Cruz to finish well. The lessons to be learnt? Diaby, Denilson and Senderos were too far from Traore to offer support and he was easily overloaded by Bentley and Derbyshire. Hoyte at the far post may well look at it and think he should have attacked the cross rather than hold his position so rigidly. He was looking along the flight of the ball, seeing that his centre backs had been taken out of the equation. Alas, these things can be viewed from the comfort of an armchair, are not so easy to see in the heat of the battle.

The goal allowed Blackburn back into the game and they pressed on at the start of the second half. Randall gave away a cheap freekick on the left. The ball was delivered well and Santa Cruz rose to head home powerfully. Arsenal could have capitulated but the reserves were welled and a fighting performance ensued. Sometimes within the laws, others outside. There can be no complaints about the dismissal of Denilson, it was a two-footed jump into the tackle and the automatic red means he misses, I believe, three games. Riley dealt with the aftermath calmly only really missing Dunn shoving Denilson in the melee, rightly booking Savage for reacting like a snarling yappy dog that seems to grow from the armpit of rich women.

If there is an ideal time to be reduced to ten men, then injury time is it. The break enabled heads to be cleared and the message to be put across that the players had enough quality to vanquish their foe. Despite the pressure and a few harum-scarum moments, Arsenal dealt with the added thirty-five minutes in relative comfort. Their reward came when Alex Song received the ball in the centre circle, sidestepped two tackles and strode in the Blackburn half, negating five Blackburn players in the process. His perfectly weighted ball allowed Eduardo to pass it into the back of the net.

It was a deserved win, one that Mark Hughes acknowledged immediately after trying to denigrate it, disingenuously claiming that Arsene had spent more money on the team he fielded than Hughes had available. Alas, such claims do not stand up to scrutiny. He is correct though to assert that the Arsenal players were excellent. Diarra may have sounded off at the weekend about his lack of first team opportunities but he had not particularly proven he merited inclusion with anonymous performances in the North East. Last night he showed what he could do when the team has a better balance in midfield. For the opening thirty minutes, he dominated midfield and when the going got tough, he put his foot in and mixed it with his opponents to produce a balanced performance overall. Should the unlikely scenario of Flamini leaving occur, he may find that his desire to fill his shoes in central midfield arrives sooner than he thinks. Indeed, if his compatriot procrastinates too long over signing a new contract, Diarra may find himself in the first team around Easter time of next year.

Fabianksi made some decent saves, particularly from Dunn, Bentley and Santa Cruz. There is still some way to go though before he is ready to take over the reigns in the first team, perhaps more command of his area is needed for the Premier League fixtures. This will come with time and no doubt, the domestic cup games will speed that process along. Last night’s performance also highlighted to Arsene the fact that retaining Jens Lehmann in January is perhaps more important that keeping, say, Gilberto which is where I think that Juventus enter the Flamini equation, using the media to implant doubts about his future and then coming in with an offer for the Brazilian to join immediately.

Song did well at centre back; having some Ruud Krol moments alongside some where his name could have been Stepanovs, thankful to Diarra for a goal line clearance after his header skidded towards the far post from a Blackburn corner. It did more to suggest that any Arsenal future is more likely to be at the centre of the defence as opposed to the centre of midfield. Traore, Hoyte and Randall worked the flanks well whilst Diaby showed he is becoming more accustomed to midfield on the left hand side, notionally. His goal was very well taken and more of that please.

Up front, Bendtner and Eduardo provided no surprises, their performance levels reaching the heights that we know of which they are both capable. If they were able to maintain these, it would be no surprise if they were challenging for a regular starting place by the end of the season.

An enjoyable win, one that boosts confidence of the whole squad and a tough semi-final draw await.

‘til Tomorrow.

  1. Good report Yogi – I saw things a little differently to yourself though, and drew some different conclusions.

Firstly, brilliant performance, loved it, and what a great game. I love these Coca Cola cups games, whilst you’re determined for the team to win, you don’t have the same nerves, it’s pure pleasure, and it was great stuff.

Blackburn first goal I still feel is on-side, I seem to be the only one who can see it, and don’t understand it. The winger is played on by Hoyte on the far side, and although Santa-Cruz is at first off-side, he’s not interfering with play until the cross comes in, at which points he’s back on-side, it looks on-side to me.

The Denilson tackle, this was never a sending off. Obviously the referee’s have got together and decided to cut the bad tackles out, and red cards appeared as a result last night. As far as I know, you don’t red cards for style of tackle, or for damage to the football. Denilson’s tackle was a two footed dive, but alongside Dunn, rather than at Dunn, towards the ball, not away from the ball, and that was the difference. Dunn received no injury, no injury could have been received. The two tackles on Traore were worse, they hurt him, and could easily have injured him, and the foul by Diaby at the death of the game, was a silly tackle, completely unpunished. Have you seen the Zakora tackle / red card today, amazing, and disgraceful, slightly two-footed, but of no danger to anyone, it was his ball. For me, referee’s not having an idea about the game again, you do bad tackles, injure a player and get a yellow, then also a yellow for talking back to the referee, no common sense whatsoever.

I didn’t see Diarra as the star man, he played very well in the first half, but the star was Diaby, who ran riot. This man is unplayable when on form, and has the ability to be the top player at the club, great to see him back on focus. And you pay a back-handed compliment to Song, but I thought he was an absolute sensation. Fantastic in defence, and carried the team from the second half onwards. What a display! He deserves a massive pat on the back from all doubting Arsenal fans, hopefully this performance wins a lot of people over. Denilson I thought was also top class, talk about a replacement for Cesc, he was silky smooth in this match. So proud of all the players though.

  2. Precise comments overall, YW, thanks.

For me Song has been a revelation in the CB position rather than CM when tried there. Another ‘Toure’ in an advanced sage of development. From his recent performances at the CB position Song should be ahead of Senderos and Djourou.

Senderos is still way off in his development and I’m wondering of his future role in the team. His marking of Santa Cruz for the second goal was poor and his mobility and clearances were scrappy. Time to offload him?

  3. The mark of a really top class team is how they cope under pressure and our Youngsters have really done us proud. Was only able to see the highlights but it looked like acute nail biting stuff, end to end.

Also noticed that the so-called “B” team perform much better and are more committed when there are no seniors around (Senderos, Eduardo, Bentdner etc are not first choice A teamers yet). The relative underperformance of the B team against Sevilla and Slavia is a case in point.
Perhaps the youngsters defer to the seniors thereby creating an imbalance in the team performance.

Whatever it is, I hope we see an unchanged side (with Walcott in please) for the next round challenge

  4. hboy:
Recorded and watched the alleged off-side decision.
It was offside, infact it was almost a metre off-side.

I agree on the performances. Diara’s defensive work when down to 10 men was awesome it really was.

I also agree that Denielson’s tackle was certainly not a red card.

It is the criticism of Senderos by some fans that really worries me.
I felt he and Song played very well under difficult circumstances. Watching the game again, he actually did a very good job of marshalling the defence and talked a lot to the boys around him.

Interestingly, a huge percentage of people wanted Song out, bloggers like Arseblog just have nothing positive to say and where not ready to give Wenger with all his experience of menoring and bringing up kids, the benefit of the doubt.

  5. What an entertaining game!! Only point I want to make this morning is about our Man of the match. Hands down it was Diarra.
He gave an absolute masterclass in the middle of the park. I really hope we hold on to him. At one point in extra time he was in the arsenal fans end supporting Merida (ten yards shy of the corner flag) the move broke down and blackburn played a 60 yard pass and Diarra was there tackling at right back! We are absolutely blessed to have him and Flamini both vying for the same spot.

  6. Denilson shouldn’t have tackled like that for a ball heading out of play in the last minute of full time. He was already on a yellow and his left leg caught Dunn. His fate though was sealed by the melee that followed and Hughes comments pre-match.

Thought the first goal was off-side how can you not be interferring with play if you turn the ball in the back of the net after continuing a run from an off side position.

For the sake of the Emirates fixtures and fittings hope we get Everton in the semi rather than the Spuds.

  7. The competition between Diara and Flamini in the next few years is going to be critical for the success of the club. I look forward to it big style.

  8. William / hboy

The tackle Denilson made has been a red card offence for two seasons now. Unfortunately referees are so loathe to issue red cards for fear of getting a ‘card happy’ reputation that they issue a yellow. A number of the refs who have had a week or so ‘relegation’ to the Championship have been punished for failing to issue the requisite cards.

It does not matter whether or not he was aiming at or alongside Dunn, the issue is that he jumped in with both feet off the ground at the ball. It is a straight red. For what its worth, the ref at Man City last night got the decisions wrong – the second tackle was a straight red, the first a yellow.

    YW

  9. fair point yogi.

  10. Excellent review Yogi as usual, we obviously sing from the same hymn book. hb if you look when the pass is made the Blackburn player is clearly behind our last player and certainly offside. I would also say to you and William that Denilson’s red was deserved. I agree he didnt actually make too much contact with Dunn but any jumping in with two feet like that you are asking to be dismissed. Im an ex referee albeit not at EPL standard but i can assure you that there would not be too many refs who would not have done the same, i for one would have sent him walking. The Blackburn reaction i would admit didnt help but im sure if it would have been one of our players Kolo if he had been playing would have run half the pitch to confront the official. Great performance as i posted last night, Diarra the star man with Diaby not far behind. Song the most improved player and we must keep patient with Eduardo, his finishing is awesome. On to Spurs, and its great that we will have fresh players as if our first team had played last night they would have been exhausted!

  11. What a fantastic game last night, you can really enjoy them knowing that whatever the result we are still winner’s.If diarra wants to leave he is certainly showing le prof what he can do,i hope he won’t be drug’s tested after last night, what a performance he was fantastic. The only player for me that is a worry because he has not moved on for at least 2 seasons is big phil,he still plays like cygan’s lovechild.I have seen ferry’s turn quicker i don’t know how long we can persist with him.We all know IN ARSENE WE TRUST but with big phil enough is enough.Every one else you can see a future with us but it will be keeping them all happy because of their age’s they will want to play every week. But what a problem to have the spud’s would like to have 11 player’s like our’s.

  12. As usual..it must really kill you to just admit it…do it..admit you were wrong…hmm cant see it happening.

Song was magnificent from start to finish. I hate it when some of our fans (in particular the bloggers) just cant accept the fact that the boy is developing superbly, when for ages they have done nothing but slate him. For all the proper fans out there…do we trust Arsene or these sad clueless fools?

Well played Alex…simply sensational stuff last night mate.

  13. I was mightily impressed with how the youngsters came together and battled as a real team. some of those players have put in poor performances for the first team but when they play in the CC they all rise up together majestically.

Song does have a future with us at Centre back and he is streets ahead of Senderos. Song really put in a top performance last night. I just hope wenger persists with him at the back and not in midfield where he looks out of step.
Senderos made a good captain last night but our poorest player, but still better than he has looked in the first team recently. I dont know why he is seen as the automatic third choice. Both Djourou and Song look far better.

Everyone else was simply superb. I love Eduardo. the guy is a striker, a goal scorer pure and simple. he is not a midfielder or a winger or even a second striker. he is an Ian Wright and should only ever be used in that capacity.

was also really impressed with the young English boys and Barazite too. shame he got a dislocated shoulder. walcott had the same problem and needed an operation to fix it. I think its a few months out, though he may choose to have it done at the end of the season.
Diaby was a monster. Blackburn could not deal with him.
What a game that was. 100% enjoyment. ooh to be a Gooner!!

  14. Great Post Yogi, I agree with you that Denilson deserved to go, normally i would be screaming at the TV if i felt injustice, but i couldnt defend him on that one – it was 2 footed, and a little reckless.

Great performance overall though, special mentions to Diarra, Diaby and the Song, surely his best performance in an Arsenal shirt so far.

It would be a real shame if Diarra really does want to leave, he has shown he has the potential to be a top class player.

And Eduardo’s finishing is like a young Robbie Fowler, pure class.

If i had to pick a fault, I would say Senderos, positionally poor on a number of occasions, and let the long balls bounce unchallenged.

Overall though, great performance, and great game to watch!

  15. Superb game, really an advertisement of the english game and the future of it. Both teams played well with minimal naughtiness (it was a Red Card though) Just a fantastic, well fought match between the two teams and the prospect of ‘Pool/Everton and Spurs/Arsenal as the semi finals is amazing.

  16. oh yeah and why was Marwood critical of Fabianski? I thought he had a very good game. this is a 22 year old who is not playing regularly coming in against a rough team up north on a cold night and he performed really well. the save on the edge of the box at 2-2 kept us in the game and Song mopped up nicely behind him. he also made a close ranger save that ended up being called off side but when he made the save he did not know that.
I think twice he punched it when he could have caught it, but that is a little inexperience. there was another time that the defender was supposed to head it away at the near post but ducked at the last minute. that caught Fabi out and it bounced over his head and across the face of goal. nevertheless, he recovered to get a finger tip on it and push it away. Once he gets a few more games he will be our best keeper I think.

  17. Diaby was the man. When Arsenal was on top he was involved in everything and simply too much class for Blackburn. Song gets a huge mention; his positioning and passing was perfect and his heading was quite godd despite being outjumped for the B’burn equaliser. Eduardo was excellent. His problem has been that he couldn’t link well with the team. Tonight he did that, and was an excellent Arsenal player. Bendtner was superb in the first 30 minutes. Denilson was also brilliant, very precise and neat in his passing, and always at the thick of the action. The youngster Randall getting his first start looked like he was born in an Arsenal shirt, and played superbly till he tired out. Justin Hoyte was immense, and his belief, spirit and commitment was Gallaslike. Diarra was quite good today. Keeping the ball well and showing much physical presence for 120 minutes.

It was a massive performance individually and as a team. I wonder where those idiots are who say we have no strength in depth. It looks to me that ManYoo don’t have this depth. They just don’t. This Carling Cup side would be in the Top 8 of the Premiership and competing for UEFA Cup places.

    It was

  18. Great Post YW.

Saw only the highlights of this one and it looked exhilirating. EDS restored my faith in him and to be honest was wavering somewhat. He just need to be played in the correct position which gazzap stated unequivocally.

When I had last mentioned we do not have depth I stand corrected too. Song is well able to fill in if Toure or William are injured. But both Toure and Song will be leaving for the ACN. I worry that wehave only Senderos/Djourou.

But today is not a day to quibble of what might or might not be.
The team A2 , I donot think we have a B team, did exceptionally well. Diaby deserve a mention and when I stated we need a left sided mid fielder , well may be not if he continues to play that well on the left.

The beauty about our team is that many of them are so young and when we have written one of them off, well guess what, they improve by leaps and bounds to prove us wrong.

I hope we can eventually say that about Senderos though as we really need him or Djourou to step up when Song and Toure leaves for the ACN. We cannot afford for Billy to be injured.

It is a good time to be a Gooner indeed.

  19. makes you wonder why so many tired first teamers were used at Boro when fresh reserves, like Traore, Denilson and Song, might have done a better job. we might have strength in depth but maybe its not always used in the best way?
I also question why EDS is so often used on the left wing for the first team when its clear that it weakens us considerably.

  20. I forgot to mention Bendtner, how rude of me!

The boy is going to be class!

  21. gazzap, i think the problem at ‘boro was that arsene (wrongly i reckon) didnt want to play denilson and diarra in the same team in a premiership game, and played gilberto for his experience. and i dont want to get into the whole adebayor business, but maybe he isnt the person to be partnering eduardo upfront.

  22. Matt,

Great shout on Eduardo finishing like a young Robbie Fowler.

Different players, but the simple but exquisite finishes are definitely comparable.

  23. The Carling Cup is rapidly becoming my favourite tournament. It seems to deliver the thrills and spills of cup competitions as I remember them. I’ll bet a lot of youngsters became Arsenal fans for life after being allowed to stay up late and watch that. Part of the appeal is seeing our youngsters and new signings playing with such passion and freedom and as has been mentioned part of it is I’m just too damn nervous watching CL and EPL games to relax (until we’re at least three up).

  24. Hopefully that performance by the players knocking on the door of the first team will keep the latter on their toes as well!

Gun 1, to be fair to Yogi he was not one of the bloggers who slated Song as far as I recall. Sadly there are ‘fans’ who will continue to write off our players despite the generous helpings of humble pie already served up by Almunia, Hleb, Flamini and now Song.

  25. Punching the ball rather than catching it is a technique used a lot in continental europe not inexperience.

Song was rock solid and his driving run for the third goal was toure-esque.
The boy has a bright future at the Grove.

  26. true but when continental keepers have been here for a while they stop punching and start catching. for me catching is a lot safer. too often the ball comes straight back after its been punched out.
he probably is a good puncher but I just feel as he becomes more experience in this country he will do it less.

  27. I am just thinking how excited I am after last night. Not only was it a fascinating game of football that would have been a great advert for the game (it contained everything that makes the game great) it shows how much depth we have in our squad. I don’t care what people say about ManYoo…they just don’t have a squad this strong. I mean, this team if it were competing in the Premiership could well be competing for UEFA Cup slots.

A proud time to be a Gooner!

As Cesc said after the Chelsea game, We should be proud!!

  28. Not sure about that Ole

They’d probably be battling the first team for the league!

  29. Everyone believes it was a red last night then, it’s hard to argue in the face of that general agreement – I personally just think that when two players are both stretching for a ball, it really doesn’t matter how ugly your lunge/tackle looks, there’s no malicious intent, and no danger of injury (except perhaps to yourself). To me, it seems like you’re being sent off for artistic impression, whereas players who professionally took out our players on occasions last night, got away with a yellow. Today the papers are talking about Arsenal’s violence .. to call it a sham would be kind. For me, Blackburn fouled our players on every possible occasion, there’s no justice.

Wenger’s 70th red card would you believe, what a joke. Here’s an interesting insight for all you guys, the next one will be the 71st. The press increment this number with such glee, no interest in mentioning that he’s been our manager for rather a while now, that for most of those seasons we’ve been top or around the top of the fair play league and rarely if ever make bad tackles. That the same media can talk about our beautiful football, and how the way to beat Arsenal is to “put it up ’em”, can talk about these red cards as some register of shame, makes me want to commit a few genuine red cards of my own!

  30. hboy, I agree with the second part of your comment.

Whether Denilson’s tackle was was malicious or not I don’t know, however it is always a danger to players when you jump in like that.

  31. hboy:
I share your sentiments about the red card counts.

I also do remember that, it was fashionable by referees to dish out red cards to our players. Especially at the height of Vieira’s powers.
I wonder how many straigt reds are in that tally.

  32. the media love to say 2 things. one is that Arsenal cannot handle the physical side of Northern games and two is that we have 70 red cards. so who needs protecting, Arsenal or the opposition? are we weak or are we too strong? I cant work it out.
they change their story each game.

I think most refs would have given Den a red last night so regardless of intent or injury, the point is, would a ref give a red and the answer is yes.

GREAT NEWS! Djourou is coming home….YEESS!

  33. I didn’t get to see the game last night, so I can only go off the news clip and not 4 angles or so, but I agree with Hboy!

I know why it was given as a red by letter of the law, but common sense would have been to brandish the yellow.

He leapt for it, in a manner best described as reckless but as for intent to injure, they did not appear to be any, as the players were approaching the ball from a similar line.

I don’t know what went before, or how heated the game was at that stage, but it looked as if the reaction of the players may have played a large part in the red card being given!

  34. I believe the question should be if you do a two footed lunge for the ball with no players within 10 yards of you, should you still be sent off??

    Subbed maybe, but sent off!

  35. Anyway Denilson already had a yellow, so he would have been sent off anyway.

I thought Song was excelent yesterday, but it’s a shame he lacks a bit more of height, that would be ideal for him to become a great CB. He is outjumped by taller players and that can be a problem. He compensated that with other stuff of course, like his calm defending and great runs forward.

Senderos was quite solid I thought, people just see flaws in him even when he’s OK. Yes he looks a bit slow but we already knew that, he brings some other things to our game too. He was a good captain I thought.

  36. I didn’t see the game, but Denilson tackle is sure a red card. The point is, if you jump in a tackle with both feet “Regardless” of your intent…it’s a red card. It’s the law. You can’t drive 70 miles/hour in a 35 zone and say, it’s ok I didn’t hurt any one…they call it reckless driving.

In no way that I think of Denilson as a dirty player, but for a 19/20 years old in the heat of the moment….It’s just a stupid mistake.

On Wenger playing some or nearly every player out of position. This issue has been on my mind for a long time, at first I thought why in hell is he doing that?…..After all these years he is in charge, I personally think, it’s more of a training & education for them. It’s also for him as a manager to see how the player will cope with the pressure of playing out of position.

I could be wrong, but I just can’t find any other reason, any one?

    ****
Excellent views and post Yogi, as always. Thank you.

  37. Danny the only thing we are saying is a player should not even get himself into that situation. By jumping in with two feet like that you are asking for trouble whether you make contact or not. As previously posted i am an ex ref and there wouldnt be too many officials who wouldnt have sent off Denilson last night, i certainly would have. Denilson is a young man and he does get involved with opposing players ie. match with Wigan where he had a running verbal battle with Marcus Bent. It looks as though he will have to learn the hard way and if it means getting sent off before he learns to handle his anger then im afraid thats what is going to happen.

  38. NEN

I am unsure of Song’s exact height, but having stood up close and personal with him I can tell you I was surprised to note how big he was…really big!

I am 6 foot and he was taller than me, so I wonder if it is a case of not jumping well rather than a lack of height?

Just read that again. I mean ‘how tall’…

On the question of the red card: How different was the challenge to that of Terry against a prostrate Fabs at the weekend?

  39. I think the problem is the lack of consistency by referees – Kuyt, Terry and others have got away with similar challenges this season, but I recall the pundits excusing Kuyt’s two footed karate move on the basis that he did not make contact with the Everton player!

  40. I was remembering the wallpaper of the squad and Song looked short there, but he’s standining close to Bendtner, Diaby and Djourou there so maybe that was the reason.

  41. And so is Ade’s tackle on Cashley, some other refree would have sent him off.

I do think Terry’s tackle should’ve been a red card, Fab’s fall shielded the ball from Terry, but he still went in for the lunge.

So it’s true from JK and Passenal, refrees see things differently in each game and they should be consistant……….but we know they’ll never be.

  42. Nacho what do you think of Franco Di Santo ?.

I have to disagree with yogi . fabianski looked great last night ,he’s a great aerial player ,quick and sharp , its a bit hard to 100% command the area with a B team defense .
I’m sure he would have looked better to you if sagna , toure and gallas was standing in front of him ..
Senderos looks shaky and it might be a good idea to swap one swiss for another ,send Senderos to Birmingham ..

As much as i enjoyed seeing the youth shake there tail feathers last night , i think if we really want to win the CC , we should tweak the squad in the semis and in the final .. Yes its the youths playground , i know what your all going to say..

I would still would prefer to lift a cup …If he don’t change the squad at least change the bench ..

  43. Ethan, from prior experiences I think Wenger adds more experienced players as the teams get tougher. You’re right……it’s been a long time without a trophy.

  44. Ethan, as I pointed out yesterday, Wenger said last year he would be more caeful in the next carling cup because mixing first teamers with the kids as he did last time around could have had something to do with the team’s tiredness later that season. So I’m not sure that’ll happen. We’ll see, it depends on other factors such as injuries, schedule and position in the league.

Senderos to Birmingham could be risky if we think maybe both Kolo and Song could be out for the ANC. It would leave us with very few alternatives.

    I agree Fabianski looks good.

And Di Santo never played in Argentina, and Chilean football is not shown here, nor does Audax Italiano play international cups very often, so I have almost no information to judge his skills.

He scored a meaningless goal in a match for the under 20s and is very tall, that’s all I can tell really.

We got Spurs for the next round in the CC. Again.

  45. Semi-finals against same old Spurs. Remember how Denilson bossed the entire game at WHL last year?

    1st leg – home – week commencing 7 Jan
    2nd leg – away – week commencing 21 Jan

With CC tickets cheap and relatively easy to get, I really want to go!

  46. Wo wo wo. Slow down guys. We all agree the joy of watching these Cup games is the release of pressure. Don’t start wanting to win it now! In truth I understand, but I also love the fact we are the only club to consistently use this tournament to blood their youngsters yet remain successful. Man United have just humiliated themselves trying to emulate us. We have made it a trophy to be proud of, by doing this. I love it, it’s bloody cheeky! The cup aint the glory, our performing youngsters are!

  47. Spurs in the semi, first tie at home – here we go again. I can see us playing Chelsea in the final again!

  48. Yes Veteran, I’d love the kids to face the likes of Lampard, Cech, Essien (oh too bad their poor Drogba and Terry are out injured) in the final again. Revenge or not, cup or not, they’ll really relish the chance and do us proud. So yes Danny, we aren’t that desperate about that “Mickey Mouse Cup” but the kids simply deserve this particular piece of silverware.

That we/media keep singing praises about their quality is one thing. Getting a cup to prove it, and having this huge confidence boost, would also be important to the kids’ development as footballers.

  49. Hey its one thing to beat an over confident Blackburn, (there 1st goal was off-side)..
But be it liverpool or chevski’s- spurs ,they will field a full strength side , wenger already commented in the post match interview after B’Burn he will NOT be changing the side regardless of who we face . This one is win able and will set a platform for further success!

As much as i would like to use the CC as a training ground , or a tournament for our youth, i would prefer it in the latter stages if this cup was taken more seriously .. Because I’d like to watch gallas lift up something ! And more importantly
winning ,as we have seen is good for morale .

Lousia , no cup is mickey mouse ! and if we are defeated ,think about the morale at this important stage of the season ! The warm up part of the season is over , we need to field the strongest team we can , in the business end of the season ..
Sure ,integrate youth and experience in the semi’s onwards is the smart move .

Do you just want to win the EPL ? or be known as doing the ‘double’ or ‘triple’ ?!
    what would be more profound??

  50. The other top 2, chevski and man’ure are chasing anelka and berbatov respectively . When furgie and grant , both adopt my reasoning to strengthen there strike options , i cant understand why we don’t follow suit ?.They are both going for proven EPL performers. And this is our weakest area . We need to adopt the mentality of more quality upfront = more goals, which in turn win games .We have EXCELLENT midfield service . I hate to think that we will lose our position once these deals are made ! Im praying that dudu , ade or bentner will rise quickly to the challenge , it is vital that we have some quality to partner RVP . SOON !

In my opinion,Dudu needs to be partnered with RVP as we can see he is a great finisher, As his last season’s stat’s suggest . We need someone to forge a partnership soon ..

And further to my comments on the CC , we have drawn spurs and then you can predict a Chevski final .. Both Ramos and Grant both will be hungry to win some silverware .. Having both just been appointed with things to prove .. It will be overwhelming i fear for our youngsters .
Arsene please!! see some sense and just add 3 or 4 key players …. I for one don’t want spurs to get any satisfaction in beating us …

I heard from a good inside source that Raffa will be going in the summer .The win in the CL ,plus fan pressure delayed his departure. To make way for a new manager already chosen by the club… The pundit wouldn’t say who it is …
    Jose????
    is my guess ..
you gotta love transfer rumors 🙂

    Spot on!

Ethan, we don’t follow suit because we are not Chelsea nor Manchester United. Thankfully!

These kids are great to watch. Let’s enjoy the ride. If they manage to win the cup it would be awesome. If we had got to the final last year with goals from THierry Henry, no one would be remembering it as we do now. Besides, we could field a first team (or a mix) for the three remaining matches (if we get to the final), but the schedule is hectic these days, we might lose the league in the process… are you willing to do that, ethan?

  52. NACHO
damed if we do , damed if we dont.. but i never look a gift horse in the mouth ..We are so close i can taste it .. and i dont want to give the spuds a chance to get a mental advantage over us ..

We can beat spurs , we can beat the chev’s whilst they are weak . While i share your view on seeing the youngsters, i really think silverware is overdue
and im sure ramos and grant wont really care how they get to the end as long as they create success for the club … This is where wengers self confessed ego comes into play.. And before you shot me down ,isnt
it why we play in these comp’s to begin with ? to WIN???

Danny love the spirit too !
The cup ain’t the glory, our performing youngsters are!
Yes i agree , they will be remembered if we make to the end .. And im not saying to fill the last 2 games with all senior players just a few key changes ..

like dudu for RVP – denilson – cesc.
    senderos – gallas – diaby – Hleb

all the above players do get a sniff in the 1st team anyhow .(except senderos) but wenger made it VERY clear he isn’t changing the team .. I feel its a mistake .. we will be remembered for nothing if we don’t get to the end !!! And if you view the game rationally ,instead of passionately we will be underdogs for both fixtures.
These are games i feel we can win easily with the right personnel

  53. Its not just that the kids are great to watch.

It seems the kids seem to play better with no first-teamers about…when we mix up the team with senior players, our play seems to get a little disjointed and our results suffer. Perhaps the reserves really click, and when you mix first teamers into that, it reduces their effectiveness?

I for one would like that theory tested – bring on the scum!!

BTW, Denilson’s red comes with a 3 match suspension? Is that a domestic suspension, so he’d be available for our next CC game?

  54. Playing for the CC trophy is the short term goal, playing the young team as “under-dogs” to Chelski & the T*tts is the long term development of the club.

Since you can’t compete for the EPL title with average 20.6 year old team, the CC would be your best chance to make them compete against the “top dogs”.

Any one looked at the team sheet for BBurn & Arsenal was at least doubtful this young team would be able to win in Ewood Park ….They played for 90 minutes, then they went down one kid, then they won the game with 10 against 11 away from home. I think the first team as we call should be proud of their young mates.

(Savage is a tw*t by the way, how this guy sets foot on a football field is just one of the wonders of EPL)

Anyways, I would be more comfortable if we played with a will balanced team between youth and experience.

    G4E

  55. fair comment Z !
But i would like to see a bench of 1st teamers as a backup !
