Peace And Love Before The Battle

Nick Lowe certainly knew what he was going on about although I am not sure that he was thinking about Arsenal and Chelsea when he penned ‘(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding’ but there has been a lot of it passing around in the build up to this match. Gone are the days of Mourinho’s crass ‘voyeur’ claims, in sweeps an era of admiration, friendship and, shhh, don’t say it too loud, respect. In fact there is so much R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Otis Redding can be heard hollering from The Great Beyond.

Having heard Arsene and Avram strike out with more platitudes than the lead up to a Camp David summit, Fat Frank was at it as well,

Arsenal deserve all the credit they get because they’ve been playing fantastic football. They’ve been a great team to watch and I think maybe the reason everyone has been so excited about it is they’ve caught teams unawares. Everyone knew they had good young players but no one expected them to play so consistently well and score so many goals…I think it was inevitable that Arsenal weren’t going to keep winning. It’s very hard to keep that level up, especially when you go to places like Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

Crumbs. Even John Terry, the ever-bullish John Bull, has been singing the praises of the team, Emmanuel Adebayor in particular, claiming that the Togolese forward is amongst the best in the World. Come on chaps, where is the bile that has been present in the build-up to the last few meetings? Oh, unemployed and at home.

Chelsea go into the match producing much the same form as they have in previous years, albeit with a marginally more open style of play. However, their defence is still the rock upon which those results are built; thirteen clean sheets out of the last sixteen games is not to be sniffed at. No longer defending champions, Arsene thinks it could have been better had they not let William Gallas go,

With Gallas, Chelsea would have pushed United closer. In a side with our youth, he is key and is leading the team very well on and off the pitch. Ashley wanted to go and even without Gallas, I’d have let him

In light of Gallas current form, it is an assessment that is hard to argue with. His motivation is high for today’s game, as is Diarra’s, with wanting to prove a point on top of the beating of a close rival.

It is four years and two months since we last beat Chelsea at home. A good opportunity was spurned last season; this season, the absence of Drogba and Essien presents the same. To consider Chelsea weaker because of their injury and suspension is true to a certain extent but misses the point as their replacements are good quality players. For all of his lack of goals, Shevchenko has not suddenly become a bad player; simply one who did not fit into Mourinho’s plans but now finds himself potentially with a long run in the side when the African Cup of Nations is considered.

The return of the injured quartet of Flamini, Fabregas, Hleb and van Persie is a huge boost for the squad at this time of year with the volume of games coming up. For today though, Arsene has made it clear that not all will start. Van Persie seems the most likely to given his appearance in midweek. From the team perspective, I would hope that Flamini also returns with the same drive to his performance as at Villa Park. Diarra still has a way to go before he will be ready to contest midfield battles on as consistent a basis as his compatriot has this season.

The question then becomes whether or not he feels Fabregas or Hleb is fit enough to fulfil the creative central role. My guess is that the Belorussian is likely to start on the bench with Fabregas making the starting line-up, Hleb more of a like-for-like replacement with van Persie, perhaps offering more flexibility in formation than the Dutchman. If Fabregas is not capable of lasting the pace, Diarra and Flamini may well regroup allowing Hleb to come in on the right from the start to strike some creative balance.

The rest of the team pretty much picks itself. There is no reason to change the back five from that which has done well thus far this season.

My team for this afternoon would be:

Almunia; Sagna, Toure, Gallas, Clichy; Eboue (Hleb), Fabregas (Diarra), Flamini, Rosicky; van Persie, Adebayor

With a bench of

Lehmann, Senderos, Diarra (Fabregas), Hleb (Eboue), Bendtner

It seems unlikely that there will be many goals; a single goal margin of victory appears to be a safe bet. As long as Arsenal score more, I do not care if the ball rebounds into the net via the referee’s backside when he is standing in the centre circle. The result is more important than the performance.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ‘til Tomorrow

  1. – – – – – – – Almunia

    Sagna – Toure – Gallas – Clichy

Rosicky – Flamini – Fabregas – Diaby (Denilson for Cesc)

    – – – – V Persie – Adebayor

  2. Fingers crossed for at least either one of Fab or Hleb back. Good luck all and COME ON YOU GUNNER!

  3. Frank has changed his tune – I thought Chelsea were going to ‘rip’ us apart a couple of weeks ago?

I agree with you re the performance today – 3 points for us is the key outcome I’m hoping for.

  4. Diarrah may not play as in todays Equipe he sAYS hes told AW he want tl leave, he says hes fed up playing in Carling Cup , unimportant Euro games and whenever players are injured.

  5. Good blog.

Shame about the Diarra stries this morning

  6. Thankyou Yogi another excellent post as usual. Its amazing how a change of manager has changed the tune of pre match hype, the word Respect being the operative stance. I do hope today’s game will not end in each team cancelling each other out as so many of these matches end up doing. The big concern for me looking at the table is the amount of goals we have already conceeded albeit a couple were thrown in by Jens at the start, but i suppose as long as we are scoring more at the other end that is the most important factor. As for team selection i would agree to throw all the players back from injury in would be asking a bit much we will have to see, Arsene has a big decision. I dont think we have to worry too much about the Diarra situation as a gut feeling tells me that quote in Equipe is an old one of a good few weeks ago before his recent run in the team. I will be there this afternoon as usual (season ticket holder for many years) and hope for any win no matter how as you say its obtained. COME ON YOU GUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I read Equipe today and he said it this week after Steau game.

  8. diarra wants to leave!! well he can f*** off then !
we dont want no cry babies at our club, he played against boro and i dont remember him dominating the midfield! thinks he can just come to a club like arsenal and waltz straight into the team, another example of the spoilt egotistical behaviour of footballers.

  9. If we sell him for 10m it will be a tidy profit.

  10. Diaby must play, somewhere, today…he is too strong, too physically adept and has too good a shot to not even be on the bench…

    betcha!

  11. send diarra with denilson and gilberto across North London in January for DB…

Ramos would be hard pressed to say no with his defensive problems…

and we would have a jewel who plays like we do.

  12. Diarra most probably understands now that breaking into the 1st team is too much of a challenge .Obviously that was brought to a head with flamini being offered a 5 year extension . I did say that on yesterdays blog , i just didnt expect to hear it so quickly..

We are over stocked in that department , and id rather see him go than denilson. Good luck to him

    ac milan 2 – boca’s 1 but it aint over i must run !

  13. Balanced, reasoned post Yogi. Speculating about team selection is the right of every fan. Unlike many, you however try to be as objective as possible. But I must quibble with you slightly. Why would Wenger play Hleb out out on the right midfield instead of Eboue? He always starts Eboue on the right in big games. I don’t see him changing today. Not with the likes of Ashley Cole and Joe Cole champing at the bit to take on our right full back. Even if he was not returning from injury, I don’t see Wenger taking the risk with Hleb, who btw I rate very highly as a very special player. With Eboue playing, Ashley Cole will be forced to stay at home and not overlap as much as he would like because of the the offensive and defensive threat potential that a combination of Eboue and Sagna represent. As I said a slight quibble. 🙂

  14. I think you’re right about Eboue shotta gunnah. Despite his tendency towards the over dramatic the combination with Sagna should keep the Coles in check.

Re Diarra, if there’s any truth in the quotes let him go if he’s too impatient to stay and fight for his place. He’s been here for 5 minutes and apart from the CC game against Newcastle he has done nothing to deserve to start ahead of a fit Flamini. I’m also not thrilled about the timing of these quotes either. If you’re playing for Arsenal, no game is unimportant and if that’s his attitude then maybe this isn’t the place for him.

  15. For some reason I feel like this game will be won by Adebayor. Like the winner at Old Trafford last season I sense & hope for the same today. It’s no surprise Diarra’s considering leaving. He knows his worth and had been patient at Chelsea. Something has to give in that position and I expect it to be Gilberto who’s confidence seems fried. Change is in the offing but may not occur till season’s end but if it happens sooner I expect AW to reinforce the team with new blood in LM & defence.
It’s good to be back home so we should win today.

    “We wait & we wonder…”

  16. Im sure wenger knew who he was including several days ago , but liked to keep the speculation healthy just to ensure the competition cannot really prepare properly.. I haven’t seen any news on inclusions or exclusions so in speculating, I agree with shotta …Eboue will play on the right , he was partially rested for the steaua game , and i couldn’t see any other reason for resting him unless arsene knew he was playing today.

As much as i hate to say it , im sure we will see that blasted 4-5-1 being employed. If not at the start , some time in the 2nd 1/2 .. only guess is who’s on the left ? dudu/rosicky? ?
and hopefully RVP upfront to start , and to be sub’ed by ade if he is ineffective or fatigued.. I am crossing my fingers for a more positive approach by employing an attacking 4-4-2 and getting some early goals on the board . 1 thing is for sure with Chelsea , you can never sit back and defend on a lead.. they will sure as eggs make you pay if we adopt that mentality ! i hope our discipline lasts 90 minutes.

  17. All,

We really have to go blazing on Chelsea from the start. I do not see how a 4-5-1 can achieve that. It will only make it too hard and too dangerous for us, bringing the likes of Lampard and Cole into the game and allowing chelsea to settle in.

Our best option is an aggressive first 30 minutes (4-4-2 or 4-3-3) then smoothing off to a 4-5-1 in the second half.

The good thing is that we have the players to achieve a result today.

  18. All,
We need to go all out and attack Chelsea at least untill we are 2 goals up. I will opt for a 4-4-2 or even a 4-3-3. Once we are in the driving seat, we can coalesce into a 4-5-1 and hit them on the counter. If we do this, I see us winning comfortably. 2-0 or 3 -1. And I predict that a cheseai player will see red!

  19. When we employed the 4-4-2 at the 77th minute we looked the bollocks , partly due to the hunger of RVP !
ade has good presence but still really doesn’t do it for me ! His passing was better but didn’t create a thing .. We looked far more threatening once he was off ! Plenty of cards and challenges ! anyone know what happened with eboue ? how serious?

Also i would like to say Liverpool deserved to win .
Man’ure played boring unattractive football and defended pretty much the whole game ! I cant tell you how many times they’ve played like that in the past and somehow managed a result ! !

  20. ironic that it could be said that a typical eboue wild tackle won the game for us…then he, in turn, caught his…but the significance of that was minimal…

have to respect the chelsea effort, they threatened the goal more than we did apart from the farcical last 10 minutes…

  21. Blazon

They threatened the goal more than we did? What about the second by Adebayor ruled a foul? What game were you watching?

  22. We’ve done it, we beat the Chelskese……..up the Arse, down with the Chelsks…………Wooohooo.

It could’ve been more they were very lucky. Howard, you are right, I think Ade is goal was clear and clean goal.

Another hard faught and good three points, and we will just keep movin’ on………..LOVE YOU ARSENAL.

    G4E

  23. Three points in the bag and Cashley Cole will be crying today. Clichy was better than him on the field and showed that we don’t need him.

Come on Spurs, your time is up; tough but still up there. We’ve now slowed down Chelsea challenge and if we can remain on top at the beginning of 2008, then I think our chances are very open. Its a two-horse race now.

Now that the three musketeers including RvP have recovered and joined the team, I’m more hopeful.

We’ve beaten them. Short term glory hunters.

  24. Good performance, up to around the 70th minute but I suppose that pressure is to be expected. Good game from Rosicky, who was involved in much of our best interplay.

Ethan your rose tinted glasses are again clouding your vision. Ade was superb today!

The only way the Ade doubters may grasp it, is to stop and ask yourselves “are opposition centre halves pleased to see him in the starting eleven?” The answer is, that of course they are not, that they are undoubtedly very worried about his presence. He frightened the life out of Alex, who to be fair, did a manful job marking him, but Ade was still a constant thorn for Chelsea. If he had of missed the chance Van Persie skied, would you not all be up in arms!

The returning three were sensational, they may not have hit their best but were quickly up to speed.

The more commentators seem to hate Eboue the more I have to like him. I was completely unconvinced by the idea of him playing right midfield but his effectiveness is ever increasing, in particular in the big games.

Theory on our lack of English players, it’s not a problem for me, but referees seem to like to side with the English lads!

Great win today, we desrved it, simply for being the the team on Grand Slam Sunday who stuck to their attacking principles. Surely a great run will follow!

  25. Almunia was excellent and it seems the play time he’s had has helped him. I’m still worried about Ade’s contribution overall. I think Bendner should’ve come on ealier on and RvP too.

  26. Danny, Ade wasn’t superb, he had poor passes throughout and missed a lot of headers. Same Ade, poor touch, poor passing, poor decision making. No change. He came to life slightly getting to the end of the game but still Arsene should have changed him earlier.

  27. Flint McCullough

‘Almunia was excellent and it seems the play time he’s had has helped him’

Credit where it is due, Howard, you didn’t have to be nudged for that.

No Ade was not superb but he did do very well. He took their defenders all over the place. There were a lot of misplaced passes by all players of both teams, but then it was a tight old game.

If you are talking about superb, then Flamini is your man. Literally everywhere, he has the biggest engine since Geordie Armstrong.

What happened to Cesc at the end, anybody?
How did Mikel stay on the field?

  28. Howard, you don’t like him and always see it the same way.

He played one up front and was immense. A focal point to most of our attacks, if some passes go astray it’s because he is involved in so much. His overall link up was excellent.

He pulls centre halves into the channels creating room for Hleb and Rosicky to run into.

If you can think of another centre forward in world football who can play in this kind of a system the brand of football we play, I will be very surprised.

He plays up front by himself, using his pace, strength and stamina to take defences out of their comfort zone….he then suddenly drops deep creating the link between attack and midfield…playing back to goal with sweet control and subtle passes.

He may miss a pass or two, it’s a high risk game.

Try harder to understand the full extent of his contribution. He is irreplaceable and makes our little playmakers tick.

Ask Fabregas if he likes the different options Ade offers him!

  29. Flint

You’re right there. Amunia really impressed me today. He did nothing wrong. For once I’m satisfied and if he can continue like that then we’ll be okay.

How come Wiley disallowed Ade’s goal? Why Cesc couldn’t score on two occassions? What’s your view on these Flint? Rustiness?

  30. Thanks Danny. You are one of the few guys on this board who observes Arsenal football without blinkers and preconceived ideas about players. Ade was simply brilliant today, hands down. Your description of the what he did to make the Gunners effective is spot on. None of Chelsea’s center-halves, had a moment of comfort when Ade was on the field. That includes John Terry. Given one game’s rest he was immense and was denied a goal by a picky but fair ref. I say picky because Ade was clearly fouled before he wrapped his arm around Alex. It is the same blinker-wearing herd-mentality that also cause several to miss what Eboue brings to the table, another player who was simply brilliant against a very good Chelsea team. Thank god for Arsene Wenger or Arsenal would be down the road of Newcastle with a baying herd of whingeing supporters who run good managers out of town because they don’t play their favored players. Alan Shearer, I am thinking of you!

  31. Ethan,

Again, you are absolutely right. Ade should have been off earlier and I did see a hint of disappointment from him when he was subed at 90mins.

I guess our returnees were not at their best, but I believe they will be fiuring on all cylinders in the next game.

Must say I doff my cap for Alumina. If he continues this way, we might just relax the call for him to warm the bench for a so called ” wporld class goalie”.

All in all we were the better side but not by too much. Chelsea did put up a solid reisitance. I just wondered how we would have coped if a certain frenchman/ivorian called mr. drogba was in the mix

  32. Can we enjoy the moment, and catch our breath?

It may’ve not been Ade’s best performance, but it certainly was good enough considering the opposition. I think Ade is tired, he played a few difficult EPL in a raw and he needs couple of games to rest now that RVP is coming back.

The only thing I take on Wenger in this game, is not sending Bendtner 10 – 15 minutes earlier, he could have made something with RVP.

Apart from that, Almunia may be confused with Goofy from Disneyland in the department of “Looks” but he is not a Goofball by any means. I think he made point saving saves today. To be honest, in a game like that I wouldn’t be so sure what Mad Jens would have done. He could’ve been either brilliant or got sent off. Almunia no big fuss attitude makes his defenders more relaxed and not on their nerves every time they concede a corner or a set piece.

Good game from everyone, any way you look at it…At the end we’ve got the three points, and a huge load of confidence.

  33. Not Ade’s best performance? What planet are you guys living on? The man was the focus of almost all our offensive plays in the Chelsea half. To use a basketball analogy, without our big center our passing game would present no threat to Chelsea. Can someone provide the stats? The man had innumerable touches of the ball and today his ball control for a big man was was immaculate. Most of all when he ran at the defense you could see palpable concern in the defenders body language. He may not have been at his best but he was a cut above what we saw at N/castle and M/bro. At 23 years of age we have a budding legend on our hands.

  34. have to say about ade, i thought he had a bit of a poor game today by his standards. yep he was a menace but he was sloppy. still class though, always a first choice. cant believe howard is praising almunia.lol…also i cant remember an arsenal player improve as much as flamini has.

we keep this team we will win the league no probs..

  35. Howard???

    Whats going on?

We have role reversal mate. I felt Almunia made a number of handling errors today, palming where he should of caught, pushing across goal when he should of palmed behind – a couple of good saves also, but all regulation ones he would be out of the team for fluffing!

  36. Ade was brilliant and unlucky not to get on the score sheet. The only striker in the Premierleague I’d prefer is probably Drogba (and that’s not definite, especially considering Ade is only 23!). Internationally there are only a handful I’d prefer and Henry certainly isn’t among them. He’s obviously not perfect but has improved tremendously over the past two seasons to become one of the most feared strikers in the world and, again, he’s still only 23.

  37. Joseph K, you are too hard on Almunia. Maybe you are too ready to pull the trigger for the slightest failing :-). There is no harm in agreeing with Howard just once. Almunia did a good job for us, he made at least two critical saves and while he may have erred in his decision-making at least twice, apparently earning the wrath of Gallas, it is apparent that he is serious about his job and not into the gamesmanship predecessor. It would appear from a very long distance (in tv-land) that his team-mates and now the fans are a lot more comfortable with him. Count me among them.

  38. I hate Eboué but must admit he was generally very good today. We must, must play 4-4-2 now though, we didn’t threaten on a regular basis (our goal was our first shot on target). Van Persie looks hungry. Hleb looked the least ready of the returnees to be honest, I think he needs a bit of the Carling Cup match and then to come on from the bench against Spurs.

  39. Feeling so good I’m finding it difficult to go to bed. This is a crucial 3 points and fans will see how vital this win is only at the end of the season.

For once I’ve been impressed with Almunia. The Shevchenko free kick save was a major 2 additional points earned from a possible 1. However, don’t know why Wiley disallowed Ade’s goal.

Almunia should improve his ground shots stopping ability and we’ll be fine with him.

  40. What utter tosh about Adebayor being poor. Without him we lacked an outlet for dead ball situations and his control and hold up play were much better than his last outing. Favouritism for certain players doesnt mean others do not contribute, until Eboue was taken out he constantly harried their midfield with some inspired runs, even if the final ball was poor.

Some of my fellow fans make my blood boil ala Liam Brady in the way they believe media rubbish.

Give credit to where credit is due we WON.

  41. hECK, I’m watching the game…Again Howard.

  42. Good for you Gunner4ever; I’m off to bed now laughing all the way. God loves Arsenal. The whole Stamford Bridge is hurting badly today.

They started talking about being the top London club. Than God we’re reimposition our position as No.1 in London now.

  43. With you on that Crafty…let’s get back to our 4-4-2. It may at times be less fluent, but it certainly makes us more effective in the final third.

It’s a shame because it may be Eboue to drop out and he was making plenty of in roads today.

Was stressful but really enjoyed it, really believe we’ll go on a run now. Here’s to a great Christmas!

  44. what a massive win and we did deserve it. if we could not beat them with Drogba etc out, having played pretty well then I dont think our players would ever have beleived that they could ever beat them. to be honest I think had Drogba played, we would not have won today. but its still 3 points won and for this season Drogba wont be around for much of it! With United winning, our win was absolutely vital, I dont think we can cope with going 4 or 5 points behind united at any point this season.

I thought everyone played well – yes that includes Eboue and Ade. Flamini, Almunia and Gallas were particularly good. But even though we played well and with spirit, chelsea still were able to make the game ugly. they still managed to break our play up and were very efficient with their use of the ball. its not great to watch and its just like when Mourinho was there. no change at all, which I think proves style is more down to the players on the pitch and not the manager. therefore Avram’s style can only show when he buys his own players and picks his own team.

I preferred it when we went 4-4-2 at the end. we looked dangerous going forward and I am still surprised that we only scored one goal but then Wiley was a chav for the day. I think he got annoyed with a couple of comments from Arsenal players in his ear at the start of the game and from that point on, attempted to give every single decision to Chelsea. awful refereeing.

they can all have tuesday off and come back strong for Spuds.

  45. Almunia proved that even if his is still a bit shaky about where the ball is on set-pieces, when it comes to thinking on his feet he is right up there! That diving save in the first half was deceptively hard the ball took a deflection away from where Almunia was positioned and he had to snap jump to get at it.

Eboue has too much passion but since when is that a bad thing, the man has class feet and class stamina too.

RVP is a genius but unfortunately he knows it and on a day like today when he still wasn’t match sharp IMNSHO it showed in bad shots.

Fab comes back from injury and looks like he was never gone.

What the fuck was that J Terry slap?!?

Talking about captains, Gallas is head and shoulders above any of OUR fricking english boys who captain in the EPL. I mean come on, John Terry’s ridiculous half tackle half bundle into the ground with an added foot lash out at whoever might be coming in as a reinforcement was not just disgraceful, it was embarrassing! The bloke looked like a frothing at the mouth rabid dog for about 7 minutes! WTF?

It was a smashing way to break our (short term) bogey on Chelski, a good 3 points earned in style, and at the end of the day…

…didn’t Ashley Cole look like a bowl of cold potatoes. Hah. What a tit.

    Kahm ohn yoo Gunners!

  46. Gazzap, spot on about Wiley.

There were a couple of lets say ‘passionate’ remarks made to him by our players at the beginning, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that for the first 30 minutes he wasn’t in control of the game in any way at all. Then he gave well dodgy decisions for the rest of the hour and usually going the way of the nice english lads.

On a patriotic note myself though, you gotta feel puffed up with pride by Lampard’s absolutely STELLAR free kick effort! Right.

    Fuck no!

Crap, I hope Capello really can turn us into a defensive powerhouse a’la AC Milan all those years ago…

  47. Yes danny, ade was so brilliant for 80 minutes he didnt score and never looked like scoring !
RVP had 3 shots on goal within his 1st minute and a half on the pitch. And i dont think ade got 3 shots off on target the whole game ! WHOS WEARING ROSE TINTED GLASSES?
    ALSO …
Theory on our lack of English players, it’s not a problem for me, but referees seem to like to side with the English lads!
So that must be why terry and lampard got 2 yellow cards in the same serving ? Another Good call !

If he had of missed the chance Van Persie skied, would you not all be up in arms!????

RVP came on in the 77th minute and changed the game ! you got nothing to talk about prior for the 1st 80 minutes !?
and central defenders being scared of him , makes him a hero ? did he convert any chances ?
Im sure it was a pretty hard job playing on RVP too ! Especially since he had more shots than ade and was on the pitch 1/8th of the time he was !… Good call ! ..

The last 10 minutes once RVP got on the pitch they oozed confidence ! If ade was so good on the pitch why didn’t he score? or create chances for others to score??? why did the only goal come from a set piece ? Why was he double teamed every time and eventually lost possession ! ? or just waste possession.More like one too many passes ade !
I think you need to watch the game again !

Yes ade’s goal should of been allowed i think ! however there was so many bizarre ref calls ,its pretty hard just to question ade’s NO goal !!! Oh and who was the feeder of the ball on that occasion? ..

Once van persie came on we had 2 goals disallowed and looked totally dominant ! Im sure it says something for the 4-4-2 as well ! but ade alone upfront is not the answer !
    EVER !

Again ! for the record im not saying i don’t think ade will NOT develop , just needs more time and isn’t confident as a lone striker ! We should have won that game 3 or 4 nil ! That was apparent once RVP came on !!!

  48. at least gazzup saw the game !

I preferred it when we went 4-4-2 at the end. we looked dangerous going forward and I am still surprised that we only scored one goal..

I think it has something to do with RVP . Who else made the game’s complexion change ? It was an ugly game ! made pretty at the end by a quality striker on the pitch !
sheva was anonymous and so was ade going forward , it was grinding ,gritty stuff for 77 minutes
,I think wenger seriously needs to stop changing tactics and play what we are good at 4-4-2 !
If this game hasn’t finally proved that , i dont know what has? .. Ade definitely saw more of the ball once RVP was in the game and pretty much shows you how potent we are with him in the mix… A quality striker !

your definitely correct with regards to the ‘drogba
out ‘ scenario , if he was in the game ,and we played that dreadful lone striker arrangement we would of got pummeled . But same could be said if we had RVP on for the full 90 minutes .
Terry going off was the changing point in the game ! Also almunia ,Hleb, rosicky all deserve SPECIAL PRAISE !
And fabregas needs a bit more time to re-coupe
as he did his famous vanishing trick again .. He played well but did not dominate to any extent!! Flamini also needs a pat on the back !

And as much as i hate to say it ade failed to score which means he wasn’t affective ! And one has to question who is wearing rose tinted glasses !
You can upset the defense all day but if you dont score how are you really upsetting them ??
There job is to keep goals out .. same as his job is to get them in ! I failed to see any signs of dominance on ade’s part ! The defense held him affectively for 80 minutes ! FACT !

Hence a 2nd seasoned striker is needed to partner RVP if we have any chance of staying on top !
But bentner looked good and i still think bentner and RVP upfront is currently the best combination we have !!!

  49. woohoo! go gallas! (:

Good performance, up to around the 70th minute but I suppose that pressure is to be expected. Good game from Rosicky, who was involved in much of our best interplay.

Ethan your rose tinted glasses are again clouding your vision. Ade was superb today! HAHAHA !

Well thats funny! … just scanning through the other comments you are the ONLY one to have that view!
What game did you watch ???
    around the 70th minute??
We didn’t control the game until RVP came in at the 77th minute !
I think you need to follow another sport as you clearly have no understanding of football !
At least 3 other bloggers said he had a poor game yet you pick on me !
I never said he was poor! only that he cannot for fill that role upfront and alone !
RVP made him look 2nd rate ! i might have tinted glasses but in that case your totally blind !
I know what you took so literal , the commentary stated that john terry was having a hard time containing him ! Yes might be true he is a big lad .. but if you NEVER threaten goal !? then can you call yourself a threat?!?!?!

    I think NOT !

Everybody is saying Drogba , Drogba but what about us? Is it one man team? They beat us in the CC finals when we had everybody off day, Henry, RvP, Gallas, Rosicky, Hleb and all that, same at Stamfrd Bridge when we had Henry and gallas not playing. Even last year at Emirates, we had Henry and RvP off and still managed a draw.

The fact is the team has improved. They were also lucky ‘cos both Cesc and Hleb were match rusty after being off for a while.

  52. ethan I agree with you.

The Ade praisers will never end even though he doesn’t bring much to the table. They’ll say he’s the leading scorer but Torres, Drogba and RvP(fit) could have scored 15 goals by now with the chances Cesc, Hleb and Flamini create in a good day. Ade is not up for it. I know I’m off for slaughter today but its true.

Ade should learn from Almunia ‘cos Almunia has really improved. He saved the game yesterday and at the end of the season fans would look back and say how vital the 3 points earned against the Chavs helped.

Ade misses passes all day and has a very terrible touch that often disrupt our movement in the third upfront. I’m sure Arsene is patiently working on Bendtner to continue is development. Yesterday Ade ent for 10 headers in all and missed but 2. His overall game is poor. With RvP in we’ll see who’ll be the top scorer at the end of the season.

A better partnership is Bendtner and RvP as we saw in the game with Steau. Nik should just be patient and he’ll have the final laugh because I don’t see any further improvement in Ade’s poor touch and passng ability. By the end of the season, it’ll be RvP/Bendtner.

Nic for Chelse? It won’t happen ‘cos Chelsea have seen the mistake they’ve made in gong for Cashley. The acrimony has developed into bitter rivalry between the two which was never there before. I believe looking at the gain/loss for going for Cashley, they’ve lost.

  53. I posted earlier about Ade that he likes a strong striker up front with him and that Striker is RVP. What I mean by strong is not physically, but rather technecally who will take defenders on and free space for Ade. When RVP came on Ade did much much better.

I still think Ade will be given a rest soon, and Bendtner should play some more with RVP.

  54. Right on Howard- i really think anything ade can do bendtner can do just as well/better. Ade might be 23 but so is Torres for instance and Bendtner’s 19!

For such a big guy Ade loses out on too many headers, and his passing and movement are too often sloppy. Yes he had a much better game than the previous ones but that’s only by his standards, which aren’t very high, since his last few games have been complete rubbish.

Earlier in the season the goals coming from midfield have been covering up his inadequacies. Nikki B’s a much better overall player, and I’m sure ade realises he’s running out of time. Anyone notice how unhappy he was at being subbed for Bentdner on 90+ mins? He can be selfish and play Eduaro out of games, but no chance with the more confident RVP and Bendtner.

Even all that aside i would like him a hell of a lot more if he doesn’t keep talking himself up in the press- it’s worrying that somehow he’s undroppable and thinks he’s already there as a top striker when he clearly has a LOT to work on.

  55. http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/sport/football/2007/12/16/adebayor-s-as-tricky-as-any-i-ve-tackled-says-john-terry-98487-20256716/

Just a little respect for adebayor, please. All the defenders in the league know how tough he is to play against. He gets goals, but its not the only part of his game, or even the biggest. All the points have been mentioned in this thread so I wont repeat.

he can be sloppy, in fact he looks sloppy….the same way he looks slow, its deceiving. The way he went past Ben Haim and took his goal extremely well was excellent. And as for him not creating anything in the game…It was chelsea for God’s sake, their defence isnt exactly leaky. The reason we looked a lot better when RVP came on, apart from him being a legend, is that Chelsea were committing so many men forward that there were more opportunities for us.

3 points, enough of this overanalysis. We’ve just beaten a team we havent beaten in years, with a confident, excellent performance, and people are still complaining and picking holes in the team. Does my head in.

  56. Ade seems to have a silent arrogance in him too. His displeasure with team mates and talking up himself in the press all the time. He feels he’s undroppable and showed his displeasure in yesterday’s match when replaced by Bendtner. Another TH14 in the making but lacking TH14’s ability?

For me I just want him to improve his touch and passing and be more complimentary in his play. Right now Nik needs some play time and Arsene will be giving him chances to continue to develop.

Nic will come in every premiership game either to replace Ade or RvP. He will also play full game in all the features in the CC games if we continue to progress as well as the CL games. His chances are coming gradually and if Ade don’t improve his known weaknesses then he’ll be swept away.

I see Arsene going for Benzema in the January opening or summer. So Ade should be advised to buck up ‘cos I saw Benzema in Lyon/Rangers game and he was class.

Arsene need to bring Benzema and a CB and ship off Gilberto and Jens and possibly Senderos.

Almunia has improved greatly. He just need to continue to improve on his decision making a little (timings to rush out) and also his ability on ground shots and he’s No.1. He’s already good at corner kicks. Yesterday with the refree at the feet of Chavski (seems he was promised money in the break) he was the guy who gave us the 3 points. My Crapmunia has changed to Almusaviour for me, possibly forever.

For me this is his first 3 points he’s won and I’m counting.

  57. Good one Z, but it seems some of us get happiness from complaining……So no matter how good we do, they will still prefer to talk about the bad instead of the good.

I watched the game about three times already, and just to give any player of our team a bad performance is just unfair. Again the TEAM as a whole played a good game, against a defensive and very physical side…we matched them physical for physical, we scored a goal from the few chances we had in a tight game that opened only in the second half. We were unlucky with the disallowed goal of Ade, I really think Wiley wanted the game to end in a draw as the past two he refereed between Arsenal & Chelski.

I have no problem saying, We WON…all night long.
