Just As The Defence Sorts Itself Out, Ewood Do That Again

A point that could have been more but is probably the outcome that was deserved judging the overall performance. Judging by the results from the other games, that particular outcome is not as bad as was feared before the game; Chelsea are no further ahead of us, Liverpool in the same boat and Manchester United under pressure following on from what is apparently their worst start for fifteen years.

It does not detract from the fact though that it was another sloppy goal that has cost Arsenal two points. There is a knee-jerk reaction to the culprit because evidentially it is no longer an out of character mistake. Jens Lehmann is probably enduring the worst spell of his Arsenal career. There are two decisions that Arsene has to make as a result. Firstly he has to take a view as to whether or not this error and the one against Fulham are an indication of the onset of the terminal decline in the German’s career or merely a temporary loss of form requiring a spell on the sidelines to kickstart his form again, and, secondly and equally as important, are either of the substitute Goalkeepers capable of achieving the consistency required to permanently displace Lehmann from the team?

Neither answer is as clear cut as we would like to believe. The Sparta game proved that he still has the ability to keep clean sheets, something that on a regular basis has been in short supply in recent seasons. The problem with judging the Goalkeeper on clean sheets is that frequently they are not the sole or even a participatory cause of conceding a goal. Lehmann though has not been helped by his indiscretions at set plays and other mistakes that have cost goals, slowly eroding his reputation in some eyes. It leads to the mistaken belief that these errors have been happening every other game for more than a year. The reality is that he has probably been at fault for maybe half a dozen or so goals during the course of last season and this. Judging this though is highly subjective for us, relatively objective for Arsene and his staff with the array of technology and recordings available to them.

The second issue of equal import is whether Almunia or Fabianski can replace him right at this moment in time. With the latter, this is unknown. Having signed from the Club and wanted to challenge for a first team place immediately, this could be considered that opportunity. Whether or not he adapted sufficiently is not yet known. That he has not yet figured in the First Team squad suggests Arsene does not believe that to be the case, perhaps it is the language barrier that has not yet been fully overcome. For Almunia, it could be ‘Now or Never‘. He has had occasion to displace Lehmann before, did little wrong in that spell a year or so ago but obviously did not command sufficient belief from either Wenger or Defenders to permanently claim the top spot. He looked better than before in pre-season, confirming he is a good ‘shot-stopper’ but perhaps not commanding the area as a Number One should. Whatever the outcome, nothing much should be read into Arsene’s defence of Lehmann; he was never going to come out and kick the man when he is down. There is no chance of the called for Option 3. Wenger will not sign a new ‘keeper this window unless he has already planned a move for either Lehmann or Almunia, something that is highly unlikely. More likely is that he will have a short spell out of the starting line-up to rediscover his focus.

The thing that exacerbates the situation is that whilst Rovers enjoyed far more possession during the Second Half than perhaps they should, the defenders in front of Lehmann had continued there good form of the previous two matches in that they had eradicated the stupid errors that led to goals. A lot of this is due to more solidity on the right, Sagna again putting in a consistent performance, containing Pedersen, proving that despite the clamour, the player is simply not Arsenal quality. Clichy on the other flank had kept Bentley and Co. reasonably well contained also. Gallas and Toure were similarly getting on top of their opponents, Senderos continued that when he came on. For the sake of his confidence, I hope that he has exorcised the Ghosts from the FA Cup Replay – he can probably be rest assured that he will not be asked to play Right Back again unless there is a dire emergency.

The injury to Gallas leaves the Centre Backs a little short this for a fortnight or so; cover is there in the form of Gilberto, Hoyte and perhaps Nordveidt at a push. The hope on Wenger’s part is that it will be unnecessary. Early reports suggest that Gallas will be back for the visit to Tottenham.

Concerns arose about the battering that RvP and Cesc received. The former got a booking, possibly could have got a red had the official been more ‘trigger-happy’, through fighting fire with fire. It was good to see that the players were not cowed by the game; disappointing that they have yet to learn how to impose their own rhythm on aggressive opposition. They also have to retain possession more solidly in the face of such tactics; the Rovers equaliser seemed a matter of time on that basis although until Lehmann’s error, it was by no means certain.

van Persie’s goal contained positives aside from the ball entering in the back of the net. Firstly the bodies in the box; Cesc, Eduardo and RvP were all there for a chance. The presence of the three also induced the panic in the Rovers defence, pressing and challenging for the ball if the opportunity arose. Signs that post-Henry, a new way of thinking has sunk in.

Eduardo had a quiet debut. Good movement but lack of possession gave little opportunity to shine. He can take comfort from the knowledge that the matches of this ilk are few and far between. Bendtner did well when he came on, causing problems, setting Hleb for a shot that perhaps could have been taken first time; when it came to Denilson, his strike was blocked before it could be parried or caught by Freidel.

Not a vintage performance; ‘resilient’ is the word Arsene used. A point is useful and not the end of the world but disappointing in the knowledge that it could have been more.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Jens cost us 2points. Time for almunia to step in. Injuries is a major worry already and season has just started . I would hope do get a couple of 1st team signings . But it looks like no one else wil come in.if robin gets injured we are in big big trouble

  2. I was seeing the game live on star yesterday. i have constantly observed that Bentley tries to put in a extra bit while playing aganist us, sinec he was an arsenal player.

But there seems to be something going on between persie and him. i sensed a kind of competition.

I think Wenger made a choice between Persie and bentley, and that rankles him..

    Your comments on this one??

  3. Pedersen is not just ‘not Arsenal quality’ he’s also a dirty cheat – Blackburn are welcome to him.

  4. I thought we played quite well yesterday. Not at all dominated by a free flowing blackburn as Mark Hughes would have you believe. Blackburn are a horrible team with many detestable players in their ranks. Not at all suprised that the pundits on MOTD scoffed and chuckled when asked about Blackburn’s approach. “We’ve heard that kind of whining from Wenger before” and “that’s how you’ve got to play against Arsenal, be physical” [or words to that effect].. Absolute cretins.. How about a little bit of impartial intelligent punditry, after all that’s what you’re paid for.. hmmm too much to expect.

  5. I can’t even see MOTD where I live and anyway they manage to convince me they become worse day after day.

  6. Wenger is always very loyal to his players (sometimes to a fault). So i would be suprised if he did drop Lehmann. The last time he did so it was not only because of bad form but also because he thought he was getting complacent in training. However i must say that if there is true competition between our keepers (as there should be given that we have 3 quality ones) then it is only fair that Almunia be given a chance in the next few games.

  7. Ricardo De Souza

If AW persisits with Lehman it reminds me of Seaman. Arsenal could have won the double in 2003 had they had a more competent goalie than Seaman who was to be frank in terminal decline.
Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself especially with the red nosed one who is having his worst start in years.
Let’s be realistic all good things must come to an end and for u know he could be out by Xmas.

  8. Whether to replace the keeper is going to be the biggest decision that Arsene is going to have to make for a long time. My hunch is that he will continue with Jens, rightly or wrongly i dont envy him having to make that call. It was good we countered the physical side, i was a little concerned that we allowed ourselves to be dominated in the second half but all in all a decent result for us as a lot of top teams will go there and struggle to get anything. The topic which i find hard to understand is that we all seem to be surprised is the way Blackburn played against us. Surely it was obvious that was the way they were going to be as they have always touted the laws, lets face it its hardly new as their manager always played like that.

  9. Lehmanns’ gaffes this season are due to complacency. He needs to worry about his position. With any luck the gaffes he has made should provide that worry and may in themselves be enough to ensure that he is as good as we all know he can be when he is alert and focussed.

At the beginning of last season getting a point in the troublesome ‘gritty’ northern away matches would have been considered a decent result. In someways it is a sign of our growing confidence and belief that we now see these matches as points dropped.

  10. Enough is enough! I know Lehman feels terrible for what happened, but the harsh reality is that the sort of mistakes he has made in our two PL games to date are inexcusable! I’m not trying to put the boot in to the bloke, but its certainly time for a change at number 1. This can’t go on, I go back to my previous comment about the back four having confidence in their keeper, and if they still did after the Fulham game, they certainly wouldn’t now. I agree, the back line has a lovely solid look to it and are playing in a very composed manner, its time for Wenger to act, and no, it isn’t knee-jerk, its common sense!

  11. Well, that “one off” is now two in two league games. How much longer do Jens’ otherwise good performances save him from costing us a goal that coist us points. Almunia deserves a chance to have an extended run in the team.

  12. Oh and Savage once again proved what a horrid little shit he really is. If one of our players had taken that dive the “pundits” would have spoken about it for weeks! Why wasn’t he booked? retrospective action is once again!

  13. “Not at all dominated by a free flowing blackburn as Mark Hughes would have you believe. Blackburn are a horrible team with many detestable players in their ranks”

If you had been in the Stadium, and not just commenting form the BBC London Biased edit. You would know that your boys were played off the park yesterday.
You will win nothing with this set of girls. Persie should stick to what he is best at and play football. His challenge on Nelson was one of the worst I have seen in many a year ( I was 6 feet away).

  14. Yeah, the BBC London bias that says that Savage didn’t dive…

Anyway, I think many here agree that Blackburn’s 2nd half was a good one. Let’s not limit ourselves to mutual abuse.

  15. Time for Jens to go. If not, I am afraid we may drop another 10 pts due to his mistakes before the season is out.
Try Almunia now on a longer spell. It is better for a new goalie coming in to know he has a long spell than a stopgap one. Further, its better for a declining goalie to step away from the plate rather than trying too hard in the next few games to resurrect his reputation. It is in the next few games where, by trying too hard, he will make more mistakes.

  16. The bench has done Lehmann good in the past. I think he would understand if Almunia took his place for some time.

  17. I think we have to drop him

If we dont’ all it says to Lehmann is he is untouchable and guaranteed to be playing regardless of form, and what sort of message does that send out to Almunia and Fabianski

It is not just the mistakes, you look at any set piece now, we have to commit players to stand round Jens as the opposition know how to wind him up.

I am not too happy about the cover for the CB’s. Hoyte is not good enough to play there and whilst maybe Gilberto is, we miss him from the midfield so you are just moving the problem of strength in depth around the squad. it just goes to prove that Wenger has made a boob in letting Djorou out on loan. I know some of you can see no wrong in what Wenger does and I am sure his intentions of giving him 1st team football elsewhere were for the best but what is more important?

I admit we have been once again very unlucky with injuries, but 3 in one week is crazy, if this does not force Wengers hand in his pocket nothing will, luckily the fixture list has been relatively kind to us and we should still cope with Man City and Sparta, however I seriously doubt Gallas will be back for the Spuds away game and if we continue to lose players at this rate then we are in trouble

I think our style of play actually encourages the fouls and the injuries, I imagine that for the opposition Arsenal’s slick passing play winds them up no end and the only way to counter it is the niggly challenge

  18. “If you had been in the Stadium, and not just commenting form the BBC London Biased edit. You would know that your boys were played off the park yesterday.
You will win nothing with this set of girls. Persie should stick to what he is best at and play football. His challenge on Nelson was one of the worst I have seen in many a year ( I was 6 feet away).”

I saw the game too and Blackburn had a lot of pressure with a longball strategy for about 25 minutes in the 2nd half. It enabled you to bypass the midfield but we dealt with it pretty competently and began to play our way back into it in the final 15-20 minutes. Blackburn had set the tone of the game long before RvPs tackle – and why talk about playing like girls if you aren’t happy to receive what you dish out? You see it as a point won we see it as two dropped – that tells you what both sides really felt about the game.

  19. You get the feeling that if all the Blackburn players came on the pitch with crowbars and then systematically maimed all our players that the MOTD pundits would have said.. “typical Arsenal nancyboys, they don’t like it up ’em, can’t cope with the true English spirit”. The fact is that we dealt very well with the physical aspect of the game and gave as good as we got.. It was Blackburn’s cheating that was the problem.

  20. Everyone is too complacent. The squad is so WEAK, we have not had a good summer in the transfer market. Torres and Babel showed what we have missed. Sagna was an excellent aquisition but Edu looks like a fish out of water.
We have so little cover if we get injuries and more yellow cards.

Almunia played well pre season and should be given a chance, RVP is alone up front and then gets moody, perhaps Ade wil help calm him down

Walcott needs to be loaned out he just cant get past a defender. Bentdner is one of the only bright sparks.

We won this fixture last year in bad weather remember we have 8 more games up north. We had 5 million surplus from January sales plus 13 milion from Summer sales so AW should try and get Aneilka to give us any chance of silverware.

  21. “I think our style of play actually encourages the fouls and the injuries, I imagine that for the opposition Arsenal’s slick passing play winds them up no end and the only way to counter it is the niggly challenge”

That is why we sometimes deend on referees not by-passing late challenges et. all. If teams are not punished for systematically playing like that, then we’ll be kicked repeatedly for trying to actually play football. Which sounds unfair to me. Defending tight and going for every ball is one thing, but systemtical kicking is another one and it shoulkd be dealt with seriously.

  22. I think that’s what everyone overlooks. They always accuse us of moaning about the physical play of the opposition but it’s not that we have a problem with. It’s the tugs, trips, kicks and general cheating behaviour that is not punished.

  23. I have just watched the highlights, so can only comment based on that..

But on the positive side, it seems that we coped reasonably well with the physical nature of the game.

And on the chances created i saw, we can feel a little hard done by that we only managed a point – although Blackburn seemed to have a couple od good chances, and there didnt seem to be a whole lot wrong with their disallowed goal.

So – all in all – a decent point away from home against a side who could potentially take points from many a team at Ewood.

On the negative side – injuries are building up already – and AW really needs to bring in 1 or 2 new players.

On the goalkeeping front – i am afraid their is no room for sentiment in football – Forget his past good performances – Lehmann has now given away 2 goals in 2 games – and cost us 2 points, which could easily have been 4 or 5.

He must be dropped – end of.

Also – Savages dive in the box – a disgrace – and if that was one of our players – it would be headline news.

And – was it Bentley jumping around in front of Lehmann when he let in that goal?

Very sporting considering we paid for his football education.

Oh well – never was and never will be good enough to play for us anyway!

All in all – a satisfactory point – now please – FFS – sign Anelka!

  24. Jimmy you got it about right mate but dont expect any Lancastrian supporter to see it as it was, they see only one thing….end product. The only two teams from that area that ive seen play good ‘hard’ but honest football are Everton & Man City, and look how they have been overrun by the thugs elsewhere.

Facts…Hughes was a dirty but skillfull footballer and is the same now as a manager.

Savage, Nelson, Samba & Pederson are thugs and were aquired for that very reason.

Hughes has always instructed his teams to play the percentage game of see what you can get away with right from the start, and then try to play football.

We all know the FA will always back the Northern clubs because for nearly 100 years the two main associations that ran the league & cup were and are dominated by Northern chairmen….so lets be honest and say whilst the officials are being instructed to allow these assualts on good football, nothing will change.

Lehmann must be dropped. Almunia hasnever let us down and had an excellent pre season, as did Bentner….so Arsene forget blind loyalty, and go for the changes.

  25. Sorry guys but moaning about these things is pointless, we play the best football so therefore we will be kicked across the pitch- something the players in part seem to have now accepted and are dealing with. So should we.
I watched the game on Star Sports and Sagna looked excellent, his defending was a real bonus and we actually look solid at the back apart from the obvious Jens goof..
I also thought Eduardo looked good too, he had good movement off the ball and once him and RVP form an understanding it could be a great partnership with Bendter forming a more than adequate back-up.
All in all it was an acceptable result and probably a fair one given the chances to either team. We can also be happy with the thought that it is unlikely that many other teams will much from the same fixture.

  26. Strange how the savage dive nor pederson stamping on cech head made any news .if it was arsenal players it would have been everywhere. alot of injuries already but arsene stated his not looking to buy. He is so stubborn at times

  27. Unfortunately since losing Paddy and the English back four in such a short time other teams found that we could be muscled out of the game and although the lads are showing a better resolve now and adding a bit of a bight to their game the opposition still feel they can kick us off the field.
As a team I am sure they will fight more this year but just watch the red cards come flying our way unlike the Savages of this world where the refs some how think he can get away with it because that is his natural style of play.
MOTD, big ears is busy with his young girlfreind and Mr Tango is still the same crettin as he ever was, even Lee Dixon toes the BBC line with his dull comments.
This time AW will rest lens if he has another blunder as his patience is not what it was a couple of years ago.

  28. just watch the red cards come flying our way unlike the Savages of this world where the refs some how think he can get away with it because that is his natural style of play.

i think that’s probably the best insult the refs could give a footballer. i’m sure the logic of that escapes savage, and maybe the refs too.

oh, jens. *sighs* maybe a spell on the bench could do you wonders. the thoughtful criticisms are warranted, but it hurts like hell.

  29. talking of MOTD we have to look where the so called experts come from, they all have loyalities to clubs that are cnsidered main rivals to Arsenal and they are all praying for a decline of AW and arsenal..we must win the leage to stick it up em so called experts..
Leahmen must be dropped , we still need one attacking and one defensive player ..hopefully it will happen this wk during the international brk with AW signing a new contract

  30. Remember we are lacking Diaby, Gilberto and Ade. Three big lads that aren’t so easy to push around. That should improve our chances to fight this kind of approach.

  31. We were short with injuries, in particular to Bert!! I have not seen the game, but a United team shorn of a couple of key players lost.

We do need to keep a handle on this, we drew because of a one-off (hmmmmmm) goalkeeping error. We are competitive but not yet fluent.

There are some plusses and maybe a few minuses. Either way, we have conceded two strange goals. Otherwise we may of had two clean sheets.

3 points next up and it will have been a satisfactory if not breathtaking start.

  32. Jesn wasn’t even the most error-prone keeper in that game. Freidel made three big mistakes one of cost Blackburn a goal and the other two very nearly did. Don’t get carried away with the horror of Jens’ cock-up – it was still just one mistake.

  33. Yeah Hackajack

One mistake this week, and one last,

You are right we shouldn’t be upset that he is costing us points on a weekly basis….muppet, lets not get carried away lets give him a hug and say dont worry Jens, its ok to be a absolute half wit every weekend.

Who cares if Friedel made mistakes, he is not our keeper, I couldn’t care if all other 19 Keepers made mistakes, it is the one in Arsenal’s goalmouth that counts and he is becoming a liability

  34. is it time to slash wrists now, Patthegooner?

  35. Somebody should at least mention David Dunn for those who didn’t see the game (as bad as Savage dive). Bendtner went in with a high boot to get the ball but snatched his foot away when he saw Dunn going for it with his head. What does Dunn do? Well with absolutely no contact he grabs his face falls to the ground and rolls around. The only possible reason is to get Bendtner either booked or sent off. As bad as that was though, more shocking was the fact that is was completely ignored by commentators and pundits alike. I can promise you 100% had that been done by a foreigner they would have been straight up on their high horses. Same goes for Savage.

  36. C’mon Pat get some perspective. What do you want to do? Get in a keeper who makes more mistakes? Because believe me, Cech aside, every keeper in the PL has over the last four seasons.

  37. Sorry

He needs to be put on the bench for a bit, may be it is age maybe it is the complacency of being number 1, either way Almunia should be given a crack, he was fine in pre-season and it should now be upto Jens to win his place back

How do you know Almunia will make more mistakes? again what message does it put out to Fab and Almunia if we dont drop him

Yes every keeper does make mistakes, the 1st week I semi understood it, 1st touch and all but yesterday was pur technique, there was no excuse for what he attempted to do, the ball wasn’t moving around it was straight at him, he could have caught it or palmed it down and caught it.

  38. yeah, patthegooner, i was miffed over that fumble. earlier in the game he was catching free kicks with confidence and composure; i’m guessing he was of two minds on what to do that particular moment.

i just wish we didn’t get on his back so often. i also wish he didn’t make those mistakes which make us get on his back so often.

  39. Pat

Almunia cost us the Champions league final. Lehmann was exposed horrendously early on and he rushed off his line in a bid to not concede early into final.

But Almunia was beat late on with us heading towards Champions League glory, by two shots that top keepers save both. Reasonable Keepers save at least one. One was thru his bloody legs.

When he came in for Lehmann las time, it was bloody chaos. That is why it was not long for Lehmann to re-claim his place.

By all means, be disappointed with Lehmann but championing Almunia is absurd.

I would give Lehmann last chance, one more error and call in Fabianski.

The reason I would give him one more is because the defence has only conceded two and look settled.

  40. Now is the time

We have Man City at home next weekend, so I would bring Almunia back in for that,

The CL was two years ago and think about it, Almunia was settled on the bench, he was probably in a relaxed mindset that was suddenly crushed by Jens mistake, please dont blame Almunia for the CL it was Mad Jens that got sent off not Almunia, that is a ludicrous comment.

Are you telling me you dont cringe at every setpiece when you can see him getting wound up by the opposition, he is in decline and needs a kick up the arse.

So if I dont champion Almunia, shall we just give him a free transfer cause he obviously does not have the necessary skill levels to play for us? he was spot on in Pre-season. funny you dont see the same comparision when we play defensive midfielders on the wing or Sideshow Song anywhere on the pitch.

I can see an Arsenal Squad that is really moving forward as a unit, and in both games Lehmann has cancelled out their good work.

I am not dissapointed with Lehmann, It goes beyond that, this is one too many for me

  41. i’d say we go ahead and slash wrists now.

  42. Don’t understand the other comparison??? Not sure of relevance either!

Sorry but i do blame him, not in a nasty malicious way but if you ask me if I can genuinely trust him in a big game, the answer is no!

He has been fine pre-season but that is another kettle altogether!

When he came in last time it was a running joke, Lehmann’s form was poor justifying being dropped but Almunia never even reached that standard in his handful of games. He unnerved the defence, they were never sure whether he would come or stay! Overall, he can make the odd great save but he is erratic and when it mattered most he did not save one of those two save able shots in the final.

As I said, one was thru his legs!!!! Forgive maybe but never forget. I am not always convinced by Lehmann and he does get himself involved in all sorts, but he has handled many a big game with a fine perfomance. Champions League semi final for one!

I will not overly fight for Lehmann because I accept the last two are droppable offences but he can play on till he is 80 if Almunia has to replace him.

  43. Sarah

It may not sound like it in this argument, but I am really happy with the start of the season.

But lets face it Lehmann nearly cost us all 3 points last week, and this week he cost us 2 and Blackburn looked like they would go onto to win it. So we could quite easily be on 1 point now when we should be on 6.

I find it it little hard to understand that Myself, Dan and Ethan get slated on here for questioning our depth in the squad yet they then question our depth in Goal Keepers!! Instead they believe that despite Jens madness and complacency we should stick with him.

So what is worse, A keeper that lets a ball through his legs or one that uses poor technique and punches it in his own net. again I know Keepers make mistakes but you have to admit Jens is more prone than most.

and how can a keeper stop a ball from going through his legs when it is travelling at pace from about 10ft away, that was unlucky not incompetence

  44. And you say the defence were unnerved. Have you not seen them at set pieces now, we have to put two body guards round him just so the opposition cant rile him.

And do you honestly think they dont think twice about back passes, it is not the first time he has passed it straight to the opposition

  45. Just a bit of fun

Did a google search on the top 4 goalkeepers and howlers and this was the result

    Lehmann Howler 14,300
    Cech Howler 540
    Van Der Sar Howler 602
    Reina 970

Just to cheer you up though

    Paul Robinson 70,300

  46. heh, pat. i know your points, and i may not always agree, but i understand.

would a dropped jens give him back his confidence in goal? perhaps. i just think it’s the most incredible bad luck he’s had, and at the start of the season to boot. can the club afford to leave him in goal, trusting he’ll be confident?

it’s a tough job, this managing business.

  47. I also did a search on his career to see if he has always been a bit eratic, how about this

Jens Lehmann (IPA—German [jɛns ‘le:man]) (born November 10 1969 in Essen) is a German football goalkeeper who currently plays for Arsenal of the English Premier League and the German national team.

    Club career

Lehmann started his career in 1989 with Schalke 04, playing for them for nearly a decade. His first years were rocky; an infamous 45-minute stint against Bayer Leverkusen in 1993 in which he conceded three howler goals and was subbed after 45 minutes, causing him to flee the stadium alone by tram rather than taking the team bus,

I guess that was a bit like when he put a dampner on the League winning game at the Spuds when he pushed Keane on the floor

And you say it was Almunia’s fault in the CL, what about the 2 mistakes Jens made against Chelsea in the qtr final then put us out.

  48. Sorry about the top bit finger trouble on the copy and paste

  49. I think it would focus him

I remember this happening a few years ago, and he came back with MOTM performances.

Dont get me wrong, on top of his game he is one of the best keepers in the world but whilst the 1st one was unlucky, yesterday was stupidity

Anyway what is annoying is we are talking about him rather than the other 10 people in that team that have done ok so far

I will say no more about him…..Promise

  50. the problem with the goalie situation is that wenger screwed up by signing him on for another year (38 years old are only headed one way and he has been headed down for the past two years) and not geting in a ready made replacement. almunia is good for back up goalie but is not good enough to be our first choice goalie and so wenger goes and buys another kid, who may or may well not be ready. there is no great solution to the problem, as i said last week, to me lehman is an erratic liabilty and should no longer be playing. give it to fabianski.

as for the game, good result, would certainly have taken a point before the game. the fought well, sagna was good again. however no width again, walcott looks utterly lost, flamini again running round like a headless chicken, he was lucky to be on the field at the end of the game. eduardo worked hard and it would certianly be hard to judge him on that performance however you do fear that he looks too light weight. The mistake of the djourou decision didn’t take long to materialise, there are no good optionsoutside of senderos, having only three centre backs was always going to be risky.

as ever they need more attacking options.

however don’t expect anything new this week

  51. fabianski is good enough for Poland at 22. Cech was good enough for Czech rep at 20. Fabi is not too young. get him in the team in place of that clown. if he makes a mistake then its still one less than mad man has made in a single week.

  52. danny, if you knew anything you would realise that saving a ball which is headed through your legs is one of the hardest things to do. That’s why a lot of top strikers finish that way and why every top keeper in the history of football has conceeded several goals in that manner. I’m afraid danny, that you have revealed yourself as an ignoramous.

  53. that’s it. we should just throw him to the wolves.

*gets out emo music and knife*

  54. Ok Jimmy!

  55. I think Sagna can be used as a central defender if need be, that would leave us with Eboue or Hoyte as the right back. I think thats the back up situation.

  56. Problem then though Kelly is that it highlights even more our lack of width

Unless he amazes me and buys someone

Honestly we will end up with Denilson on the LW and Diaby on the RW at this rate, The Injuries are beyond belief at the moment

  57. the injuries are consistant with the past few years. we will have about 5 people out for every game, during the ANC god help us. the squad is too small, we all know it but obviously very little we can do about it that is up toour fearless leader. so far in the three games, flamini has played all three and now looks our third choice, song has been on the bench three times and come on twice, we have played 5 in midfield twice because we didn’t have enough forwards he trusted to play, and now we are down to two centre backs. i would also love to know why gilberto is the only south american not ready to play yet, i hope he will be back for man city next week.

  58. I join you Yogi in not envying the dilemna Arsene confronts with selecting a Goalie.
Is bench time the best way to manage Jens? and will Almunia/Fabianski step up and do the job? Tough questions.
Jens looked ok for the most part yesterday, and then comes the blunder, the more painful for the fact that the most experienced member of the squad had let a young and fighting squad down.
I personally think this is as good a moment as any to drill some sense into a contrite Jens. He has to step up now and set an example ; no more nonsense this season. I believe he is a good enough goalie to do just that.

  59. it is not a matter of sitting him down and telling him to sort it out. he is not a teenager that needs training. he is an experianced international who has had a great career. the point is like seaman before him, he is past his best and is now playing on borrowed time, his reflexes etc are on the wane and he is only going to get worse. the issue is do you just persist and expect (and get the mistakes) or try something new ie fabianski. i would go with fabianski because if he makes the odd mistake he will be no worse than what we have and lets just get him going. if we are doing the kid thing whih we obviously are why not put him in as well.

  60. The Arsenal midfielder said: “We are a team and win or lose as a team. He has made mistakes. But it is not just about one player. Jens is a professional and an experienced goalkeeper. He has saved us many times and we all support him.

Even if we are not so solid in times of trouble, it is good to see Fab sticking to the principles of team responsibility.

  61. Yes Danny, Cesc is class.

  62. One point about Blackburns style they had official gate figures of 24917 and I bet the arsenal section was full. Their fans are voting with their wallets that their football is rubbish and not worth watching. Try telling that to MOTD and they will say it’s all about winning, well its not if you have to pay to watch, and Blackburn show it every week

  63. more encouraging words from wenger on arsenal.com about possible new signings!!!! apparantly he is no where. assuming he is aware of most players out there i think it is safe to say anelka or anyone else we have ever heard of over the age of 16 is not on his way!!!!

  64. Pedersen, proving that despite the clamour, the player is simply not Arsenal quality

    YW

He doesnt really play in a arsenal looking team ..
but i think he has the class to fit in … and maybe a bit of that aggression is needed to make us TOUGHER for the EPL , not so bad in the CL , we play against other european clubs who PLAY football as against us. ok against sparta , but usually lets face qualifying
is a pain the the ass , youll loose one or 2 players to injuries and for 8 odd years prior we never NEEDED TOO ! .. (top 2 ! ) REMEMBER>?
id like those days to return .. And they should have by now !!! this 3 year experiment isnt really working .. Its pushed us somewhere below liverpool but hopfully still on par with spurs..
sweating on a CHANCE to QUALIFY for the CL !
nar , we need some players who make a difference , and dont ask me too name them …
thats wnegers job ! if you do think he’s so GODLIKE! he should be sorting this shite out , quick smart ! ive said he’ll sign more.. so just hope common sence prevails .. some of you are thinking like .. ho that mean eboue wont play..
SO WHAT? if the team gets more players like sagna’s class , we wouldnt be having these arguements on players and doom monger phrases !
we should all believe our team is at its best ..
you think im the only one who disagrees just look
at gunnerblog and i seem light weight !

i dare one of you to say lehmann deserves a 2nd chance on that blogg !
they would choo flint up and grind him to pork grissles ! i think its dan, pats and my job to stay here and slap you all until you , start agreeing !

    🙂

  65. Yeah he is definately not happy paying vast sums of money

    He talks about reasonable cost,

I am not sure if he has a cap on how much he will pay for a single player or if he just does not want to pay 20m for someone worth 10m

I hope he is willing to pay 20m if they are worth it though, we will see. What concerns me is that he has had 3 Months to identify players to improve the squad, are you telling me in the whole of World Football he cant find anyone that is better than our non-existant winger or someone who can add value to the squad, if so then we should sack the scouts

  66. oh and where is the ‘oh dear oh dear’ frank ?
    god amm gypsy !

  67. pat,

completely agree, to say with 10 days to go, that you can not find anyone who can improve the thin squad we have is very disturbing in so many ways.

  68. I dont even want to spend silly money,

Anelka is a must for me and at 10m in todays money, he has looked different class for Bolton.

I can’t name a winger now, I really dont know who is available, I would love Quaresma but it won’t happen. The Modric link remains but I am fearful that he is too similar to Hleb and Rosicky.

Do we need a Defender now? can we call Djorou back, can we really be feared in the Premiership when Sideshow is the backup CB, should we get Curtis Davies in? and maybe sell one of Djorou or Senderos. We would not get him but Micah Richards who can play anywhere across the back four was awesome against Man Ure at the weekend.

I dread to think who will get injured next weekend.

  69. no point buying davies when we have doujou, it was such a poor decison to let him go, especially if we can not call him back, i would rather he was playing in front of senderos. they will never get richards, way too expensive, as for wingers we let all the good one’s slip away. no chance of quaresma also way too much money. it is a shame that it always comes down to whether wenger will spend the money or not. look at what ribery is doing at bayern, i don’t think that he was risk even at that cost.

  70. when anelka signs for man utd i for one will be seriously peed off.

  71. I know

I think I might write to Santa, see if he can come early this year.

I wonder how much Robinho and Anelka would cost. I reckon about 25m for the pair which would mean that we have invested about 13m above the money taken for players out

How good would that summer of Transfer Activity sound

Sagna, Eduardo, Robinho and Anelka with some youth for the future in Sunu, Nordvelt, Fabianski and Bartley.

I wish, I cant wait for the Transfer window to close so we know either way

  72. pat, just pretend it’s sept 1 already, i am sure you are not going to miss anything.

  73. well gee latest rumours out that man ure are hunting for anelka due to rooney injury.. will they soon buy every striker in the league !!? Come on guys if this doesnt show you how much some teams want it ?
    what does?
and we are thinking 2 games into the season and we are speculating maybe bentner can start??! holy ##it , its like a horror movie !

or praying to get djorou back !?
I cant personally see arsenes LONG TERM DIRECTION HERE !? surely if you are going to buy
youth talent , you get people like poldoski or tevez ,torres .. messi a few years ago !?
marcelo, vincent kompany, Igor Akinfeev for a goalie !

fabs and walcott are the closest thing we have to
WIZ kids , and thats pretty bad considering arsene has been buying youth ..THINK ABOUT IT !

. weve missed out on lupoli – babel people who actually might of made a difference . you have huntlaar and drenth and youth that are screaming to come into a BIG CLUB … tevez , loved the prospect and gave us a come and get him plee !
ribery , we had our chances .. lets hope theres
some gas in the tanks for the player left ..

wengers on the record for saying

“It looks like it (the league) will be tighter. We have only played two games of course.

“Away from home we are disappointed because we did not win but it is not a bad result to take a point at Blackburn.

“I am confident we will be up there but with whom I don’t know.”

well thats confidence for ya ! probly with blackburn, fulham and derby.. RIGHT?

well its late here , if anyone give a shite about my postmortum here it is , i wont defend it, til tomorrow ..

    yogi all comments welcome ..
also i do agree with you on your defence peice
    good skills ..

    E-WOOD PARK POSTMORTUM !

  74. I think that is a bit tight on the Youth Ethan
Remember we also have Diaby, Denilson, Vela, Merida, Gibbs, Bartley, Simpson, Lansbury, Sunu, Pedro etc.

it is coming but it is what we do in the meantime and will the likes of Van Persie, Fabregas and Gallas still be here when come through, or will it be groundhog day all over again

I could not quite get the jist of Wengers latest Contract talks, did he say he only wanted to sign a years extension, if so how does everyone feel about that, surely this will mean another Summer of uncertainty this time next year. I sort of understand his logic in that he does not know who will own the Club but I don’t think I can take many more of these Summers.

  75. Sarah,
do you recommend a Leonard Cohen CD or ‘The Robbie Savage Soccer skills’ DVD to slash your wrists to.

  76. Dan,
“it is not a matter of sitting him down and telling him to sort it out. he is not a teenager that needs training. he is an experianced international who has had a great career.”
That’s true, but life isn’t as simple as that is it?
“experienced” professionals make mistakes and go through lean trots too. It happens in sport, in business and in life generally. That’s why we have Managers, coaches, psychologists and the like in all walks of life.
Point is do we trust a man to have the desire and the skill to come back from an error. I think Jens has both, though I welcome disagreement on the point: It is a question of personal judgement. I just think it is too early to be rolling the guillotine out.
This is where Arsene earns his money I guess.
    We’ll see.

  77. how about some jeff buckley or the national, jon s? we can drink our pain away while sharpening the knives.

  78. Latest Rumour News!

Anelka and Luka Modric to sign new contracts with Arsenal as Wenger pens a new deal. These players will be unveiled together before summer transfer period closes. Anelka has opted out of Bolton since Bolton seriously need the money to rebuild the Club. With Adebayor set for ACN Wenger has given Anelka a TWO year deal to supplement his striking options and get some silverware this season.

  79. Sarah / Jon S

Might one suggest listening to ‘Closer’ by Joy Division to create the ambience you are after …
