Money Talks

If Eduardo da Silva wanted any indication of his place in the media pecking order, he has it in spades with this morning’s papers. No sooner had the newcomer finished his platitudes – the only thing he left out was how he had supported the club as a child – than Cesc continued to endear himself to the Supporters by reaffirming his commitment to Arsenal,

In ten days I’ll be back training with Arsenal. My team. I’m staying in London

In terms of what he can say or do to prove that, there is nothing else. The key words were ‘My team‘; not manager, not Thierry Henry, the team. A new season approaches and there is cause for optimism that the troubled waters are not behind us but have at least been negotiated to within view of the coastline. The final part of the jigsaw has still to be pieced together and the Board appear to have done their part by putting together a financially attractive package for Arsene Wenger. Whilst the headlines focus on that part of it, my guess is that Le Boss is not primarily looking at that, more how the squad looks and subsequently performs. Whether he signs the deal by the end of the week as the media want us to believe the Board’s aim is, remains to be seen. I guess they have an aspiration for him to do that but are comfortable waiting for him to be sure it is the correct thing to do. We would like him to do so, to cut off the legs of media misrepresentation before any dissenting stories gather steam over delays in signing a new deal. But you have to respect the thoughts of the Man, to allow him to be sure he is doing the right thing for himself firstly, because if he is not sure then that uncertainty transmits to the players. However, I do not think there will be a problem for him signing a new contract, he has invested too much effort in the rebuilding the squad so far to walk away from an incomplete project. Much is made of the ‘instability’ caused by DD’s departure but compared to the suitors from Barcelona and Madrid, we are the safe choice with politics there rendering any long term planning almost insane to undertake.

I was going to lay into Merson for his naysaying about the coming season but what is the point. He has just become another ex-player seemingly unable to view positives about the Club any longer, eager to take his pieces of Silver from the media who only want to transmit the bad news stories.

UEFA have released details of earnings from last seasons Champions League. Despite going out in the Round of Sixteen, Arsenal still made £10m, more than double the amount earned by Sevilla who won the UEFA Cup. In fact, to put their revenue into perspective, Levski Sofia played six Group matches, lost them all and scored one goal in the process. Their earnings were only £1/2m less than the Spaniards. If Platini is serious about sharing the money around more, that is the Gap he has to bridge rather than sops to countries over Cup Winners and the like. Back to Arsenal. £10m is quite a handy chunk of change to acquire. However, there is a sting in the tail. Going out in the latter stages is a far more lucrative avenue to follow, the four semi finalists all earnt more than double the amount Arsenal did. PSV earnt £21m for losing in the next round. It seems that no longer is getting into the Champions League going to satisfy the Bean Counters; Quarter Finals will be a minimum requirement in their eyes.

Back to the transfers or alledged ones. Bakari Sagna continues to big up his desired move to Arsenal although he is seemingly convinced Auxerre may price him out of the move. The quote that caught my eye was when his words were translated as calling Arsenal a ‘mythical Club‘. Presumably if the move ever happens, and I have doubts about that, it will be a fairytale move for him but it’s all looking a bit Grimm for him at the moment.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Would it even be so bad if Wenger left? While having here on an ongoing basis is a wondferful thing, even if he doesn’t move to another club he will retire eventually.

With the quality of the existing squad (or whatever squad Wenger leaves behind), the training facilities, the wonderful stadium and the solid financial and oragnisational set up of the club, any new manager (and we could take our pick0 would be able to hit the ground running.

Notwithstanding all of the above, I hope he stays. But his departure wouldn’t mean the end of Arsenal FC.

  2. Nice piece, shame about Mersons opinion but every man is entitled to his/her opinion.

Can anybody tell me if VP will play up front next year of will it be ADE+ Da Silva

    How does this Look?

    Lehman

    Eboue Toure Gallas

    Diaby Gilberto

    V. Persie Fab Rosicky

    Adabayor Da Silva

  3. THE SILVER GUNNER

I think it is safe to say that RVP will play upfront next season he was our shining light last season and we missed him terribly when he was injured.

I think our team will be more like this

    Lehmann

    Eboue Toure Gallas Clichy

    Hleb Silva Fabregas Rosicky

    Van Persie Da Silva

    Subs 5 from:
    Adebayor
    Walcott
    Djourou
    Ljungberg
    Fabianski
    Bendtner
    Senderos
    Diaby
    Hoyte
    Denilson
    Almunia

    Knocking on the door:
    Perez
    Traore
    Carlos Vela (Work Permit Permitting)

  4. Who is Perez?

  5. Ammaz Qureshi

    Francisco Merida Perez

  6. Eamonn, to be honest it looks shite. If we were going to play a back 3(a suggestion I wouldn’t be against) then I think you would find the name of either djouru or Senderos in there. Anyway your whole team lacks balance with neither full backs or wing backs. On a more serious note I am concerned about Arsene’s statement that Eduardo is versatile – does this mean he intends playing him in a position other than striker ? It is hard to see van persie & eduardo together up front what with both being left footed. I have to say I would love to see Jose Reyes return now that henry (his ballbreaker) has gone. That would see balance in the team again and would allow Wenger to use the funds on buying another striker or micah richards/curtis davies

  7. THE SILVER GUNNER

    Augie

I agree with your thoughts regarding our need to add a natural left winger to our team, and Fran Merida Perez is still probably too young to get in the first team.

Although i am not sure Reyes should ever set foot in north london as the pussy felt “home sick” he should stay in Madris and we need players who want to give their all for the club and not winge about being “home sick”.

I mean its not like Spain is a million miles away, i had no sympathy for him and certainly dont want to see him in arsenal colours again.

Ok I feel better I have had my little rant….

  8. Augie,

If it is possible for two right footed players to play together (the norm), why is it not possible for two left footed players to play together? Eduardo and RvP together looks like a very, very promising combination, can’t wait.

  9. Theres quite a few attacking combinations available to Wenger now and all would add something different to the attack.

    4-4-2
    2 upfront

    Ade – VanP
    Eduardo – VanP
    Eduardo – Ade
    Bentdner – VanP
    Bentdner – Ade
    Bentdner – Eduardo

    4-3-3
    3 up front

    Eduardo – Ade – VanP
    Eduardo – Bentdner – VanP
    Theo – Ade – VanP

    4-5-1
    Ade
    Eduardo
    Bentdner

    and so on…….

  10. I think that in mid field there are a few definites.

    Fab
    Gilberto
    Rosicky-When fit!

As Wenger has said that Rosicky was the man to replace Pires (cutting in from the left onto his right) I think he will persist with him on the left waiting for more assists and goals this season.

But if we say that helb starts on the right with VP and Adabayor up front, can someone tell me where the pace in the team is? (Fab and Gio in the middle)
And if Ade is dropped for Da Silva, is VP going to do the donkey work up front and hold up the ball?

I know Ade has a touch like a rapist at times but he really gives us shape and I’m leaning toward thinking that he’ll begin up front with either VP or Da Silva on the wing and as rosicky is too good to drop I’d put my money on VP going to the right (but with a licence to switch).

  11. THE SILVER GUNNER

    Eamonn,

    PMSL about Adebayor’s touch!!!!

I regretfully agree with you because for club and country EDS has had the man moutain nicola zigic to do the donkey work.

So it would seem he is used to playing with a burling center forward.

I hope to see some of EDS and possibly get an idea as to how we will shape up for the upcoming season in the emirites cup.

  12. Ekow Manso-Howard

Traore, I think has a long way to go. I was really disappointed with him when we played Spurs at WHL in the Carling Cup and also in the Carling Cup finals, having heard so much about him. The guy we should be watching is Rodgers, the next English thing. He he signed a professional contract today and plays in all the defensive positions. He’s big and pacy, and he played more games in the reserves than any. Watch this place for him, we might not need Bakari Sagna.

  13. On that one if Sagna comes in for the reported £6-7m what the hell are we to do with Hoyte and Gilbert.

Still early days for Traore, he’ll probably go out on loan and be judged after that.

Yeah 5 young guys got contracts with Merida, Nordveit and Sunu so the focus on youth is as strong as ever.

would be great if 3 came through- Personally I fancy Merida to come through next year. And the other 2, anyones guess.

  14. Eamonn

I don’t think we need Sagna. Arsene won’t pay stupid money for him. That’s why players like Malouda, Ribery, Torres, Eto’o and co can’t play for Arsenal ‘cos Arsene thinks they’re overvalued. A lot of boys will be coming through and might need to only sign one or two each season to fill gaps and nothing else.

  15. I think Wenger has in mind that Eboue will be away for the African nations and the fact that we have no cover for left back (where Sagna can also play apparently).

  16. With Eduardo getting the #9, there is no chance now of a Reyes comeback. I don’t know what we will do if Madrid don’t stump the change necessary, but their offers have been laughable. We should sell him to Fiorentina. They are after Freddie, but Freddie don’t want to leave for anything. I suspect that he is more in love with his £70,000/week wages than the club itself, but who knows?

I cannot see us signing Sagna now. Judging by the timing of this Eduardo deal, it appears that we made probably did make an offer to Auxerre at the same time we approached Dinamo Zagreb. The difference is that Auxerre somehow things Sagna is worth more than Cissé. Pity for them, because I doubt anyone else is going to make an offer of £6m for the player.

I’ve heard that we are making an application for Vela to get a work permit, but I think he would fancy staying in Spain for 6 more months to acquire his EU passport instead.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Tevez, but I just cannot see us paying over the odds for him or anyone for that matter. We definitely are thin on wingers, so I wonder what other tricks Arsene has left in his hat.

  17. I understand as Arsenal fans you’ve given up on English footballers and to be fair you can’t blame Wenger. English kids aren’t good enough, what chance Walcott starting 20 games this season? The game for young English talent in this country is dying on it’s arse, £ 16 million for Darren Bent and Preston can’t give David Nugent away. The best young English talent? God help us. Good luck with your Brazillian Croatian at least you’l have some interest in Euro 2008! http://daverossfootball.wordpress.com/2007/07/03/your-kids-football-future-in-safe-hands/

    yogi
‘In terms of what he can say or do to prove that, there is nothing else. The key words were ‘My team‘; not manager, not Thierry Henry, the team.’

WELL FABS AINT GOING TO USE THE IF ARSENE GOES SO DO I SPEECH AGAIN IS HE ?IT WASNT PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE LAST TIME HE USED IT ! BUT LETS NOT MESS AROUND , IF ARSENE FAILS TO SIGN A NEW CONTRACT PRIOR TO DECEMBER
AND WE DONT GET OFF TO A FLYER THIS WILL RAISE ITS HEAD AGAIN . AND THOSE THAT CANT SEE IT COMMING ARE IN THE TINTED BRIGADE.

    I agree with Eamonn,

and you have too really , arsene will keep rosocky on the left and hleb on the right . maybe with the budget he can replace one .. (freeing them to play more centrally) but i wouldnt hold my breath. what would be a good idea is a FC/LW , like yogi said naturally left footed player that can switch .or get reyes back ?

I think the player will be a reyes replacement .IF ANY ?
I also think hleb is pretty bad down right wing also , i would of said either wallcott fills the spot or id buy a right winger too
(freddy must go ) unless he turns it around before december i think he might be west hams come jan.2008

sagnas statements are very public .. 50-50 % of signing him i think now . seems there club is trying to inflate the price as he is obviously an asset for them . but who knows if arsene will improve the offer .. i hope so .

can never have enough class defenders .
whats the news on curtis davies ?

  19. I believe there will be more signings. Our main problem last year (apart from our scoring / possession ratio) was a lack of depth to cover injuries/suspensions and with ANC this will be an increased issue this year. Injuries will happen.

With TH, Aliadiere and Baptista gone (in the latter cases great) and only Dudu & Bendtner in, we need another attacking player to maintain the status quo from last year, although AW may be waiting on the Reyes situation to resolve itself first. My preference would be another striker plus LW as back up for Rosicky and to provide the flexibility in certain instances for a plan B of someone to take it to the byline and cross from that side. Da Silva scored quite a few of his goals from Dinamo playing that way.

I also think a Sagna type would be good as the cover at both LB and RB is not yet good enough.

  20. EASY TIGER…u talk shit..arsenal will be no where without arsene…we wont finish in uefa spot..he is the person who attracts talent..buys cheap..brings beautiful football…without all this we would be crap..something like new castle or city…grow up mate..talk serious stufff..arsene is irreplaceable..mind your comment next time

  21. adc – Arsene will not live forever so he will have to be replaced at some point, but I certainly don’t think the time is now. At this stage in the club’s development, Wenger is the best man for the job. Once more money is available for team purchases there are managers out there who would jump at the chance to manage the team and we would be in a position to pick the best.

  22. ethan-gooner .. without wanting to sound conflictual, I cannt see one attribute in Hleb’s game that would make him suitable as a central midfield player .. his main strength is his dribbling and ball control technique that he uses to create space .. both his vision and his passing are below par ..not really the right stuff for a central boy
Rosicky is much better equipped to play in a more central position, but he is not proven there either..neither his former club Dortmund nor the Czech national side use him as such

as far as cover on wings is concerned, we have Gallas .. remember when we played ManU with Gallas LB and Djourou central, we looked very settled .. maybe we can use one more guy if Djourou goes on loan and Senderos gets the boot .. not sure about any of these 2 options ..

we sure need a couple of more signings if people leave .. I would like to see both Freddy and Reyes go and get similar guys in who would be a) keen to play for us unlike the spaniard and b) good enough to do so .. leave the speculation to who this could be to other people

  23. BB to be honest i cant find a use either for him (hleb)!
and maybe eboue right midfeild, but this constitues a problem to me unless freddy comes back with a vengance & and we get sagna ! we have just as many problems on the right if you ask me !

also i was more refering to rosicky MAINLY as you covered.

  24. well adc

what happens if he doesnt re- sign ? GAME OVER FOR U ?

  25. ok you got theo and maybe RVP . but really id like to see them up front(not right flank). i dont think we need another striker . its a matter of giving these kids some more games and cross the fingers . wenger in my opinion is probly lining someone up to play left/ right . if not adapt a player .

  26. THE SILVER GUNNER

Well i was worried about Man U before but if they get Tevez it will hard for even the most optimistic Arsenal fan to invisige anything but runner position up next season.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/6272664.stm

  27. Silver

Was anyone expecting that anyway? The team needs to be on an upward curve and this is year 3 in that. I fully expect them to be closer than they have in the past two seasons but I cannot see a title challenge in 2007-08; 2008-09 was the first time I thought a serious tilt at the top spot would take place.

    YW

  28. THE SILVER GUNNER

    Yogi

Well I was sharing AW’s optimism when he said that we would mount a tittle challenge. And in the past i have leanrnt never to underestimate AW but should they purchase Teves they will be pretty difficult to dethrone as prem champions and i hate man u with a burning desire

    8o|

  29. I for once cannot see what Tevez will bring to ManU
I thought that they were looking for a more classic centre forward .. Tevez will be similar to Rooney as he likes to hang around the outside of the box .. surely no focal point such as Larsson, etc .. interesting as they surely spent a fortune this year
now wait for Chelsea to start their spending spree.. I get the feeling that they did not expect ManU to lash out in such a way
its likely that ManU wanted to show Chelsea that they got the means to compete in this league
Chelsea will want to respond to this .. 100% so more Russian blood money will flow into West London
and poor old Benitez will sulk along even more asking for money
I just regret that the English league is turning more and more into Spain/Italy with no surprises possible any longer as the competitiveness gets eroded by the big money differences btw the leading clubs
AW needs to work miracles again .. unfort they become more and more difficult as years go by

  30. ethan_gooner

    BB

Q: what does tevez bring to man U ???

    A: 20+ goals a season

  31. THE SILVER GUNNER

Agreed Ethan about teves = 20+ goals, much more of am out and out forward than rooney is.

Well our only saving grace is that it will take time for their four new players to settle into the man u team.

If we gather an early head of steam and avoid key forward injuries we could be there.

Or is my gunner enthusiasm taken clouding common sense?

    Time will tell……….

  32. TorontoGunner

    Thanks for the piece Yogi.

I have read through a number of the contributed mails and agree in part with many of the ideas/discussions already stated.

My chief concern with the team at the moment is not whether or not we will challenge for the title (I think realistically we are 2-3 years away) but rather that we appear to be more in the frame of Ajax. Produce & develop youth, sell when an agreeble offer is received and start the next search. I do believe that the future is in youth and that the board have done a great job along with Wenger but the lack of “experienced” heads is a huge problem. We should have recruited two “experienced” bodies with solid technical skills, that lack of activity leaves us dangling in 4th to 5th spot this season.

I don’t think it is biased to say we are probably the only club not to have paid for the title but investment needs to be there for the present not just the future.

  33. HI TorontoGunner, to be comapred to the mighty Ajax is high praise indeed. My second favorite club. However I assume you meant the comparison to be a derogatory one.

In response I would say that we have a very successful combination of buying and bringing on young players, only a handful of these are home grown. The only young players we sell are those who will not make the grade (remember just how high that grade is), they may well do well for other clubs but they do not fit in to the Arsenal setup..and I include in that Sidwell, Pennant, Bentley, Aliadiere etc, etc. I think you are forgetting just how good the youngsters who make the grade and who invariably stay at the club are. I also think that you are forgetting that they grow older and more experienced by the year.

Our experienced heads at the moment are Gallas, Gilberto, Lehmann, Rosicky..with a slightly younger tier of Hleb, Toure, Van Persie, and now Eduardo…I would add Cesc to this tier (old head young shoulders). The recent old heads e.g. Vieira, TH, RP could not be trusted to stick to the script and they did’nt demonstrate the same hunger. We bought in a ‘contracting’ experienced player last year… Gallas. But he spent a large part of the season injured and the other half moaning.

I think we look well set at the moment and better balanced, between experienced and slightly less experienced. Football is a team game and this team have done an awful lot together..why bring in some old fart at huge cost to push his weight around and upset the balance.

By the way I think that the mighty Ajax would be very pleased to be linked or compared to the even mightier (these days) Arsenal. In a strange sort of way this fantastic adventure that just goes on and on was started by an Ajax old boy…DB.
