FA Cup: Villa Preview – Chicken Little Or Strong As An Ox?

The FA Cup sparked into life yesterday with Newcastle United, Hull City and Manchester United all falling in shock results. Arsenal will seek to avoid joining that trio by beating Aston Villa at The Emirates this afternoon. Some of the build-up has been quite comical; Alex McLeish has short-term memory loss, preferring to remember Wembley with a different club from almost a year ago than the altogether more relevant Villa Park in December as his battlecry.

For Arsenal, this is a chance to consign a horrible January to the dustbin with a win. No Premier League points in January, the bright spot was the victory over Leeds with the goalscoring return of Thierry Henry. The euphoria of that moment lasted just one week but key games approach in the next seven days; very winnable games. Must-win games to breakout of a rut.

New faces might help. Reports this morning suggest that a bid for Lukasz Podolski was rejected; the source is not the most reliable yet hints that the quietness is not a sign of Arsène or anyone else doing nothing, simply doing business the Arsenal way. Quietly and being rejected. Burak Yilmaz would ‘accept a transfer to Arsenal‘ so that won’t happen but there is a new signing which has the potential for causing problems, not least of which will be a run of letters for shirt printing. What’s his new nickname going to be? The Ox is taken, Laub Rat sounds too experimental so The Laub will have to do…

For years, Arsène sought to actively play down the strengths of youngsters, aware of the damage that the weight of expectation might do to a career. This time in a volte face, he is building a player up, knowing that the media pander to unreasonable expectations. I understand that this is all part of a PR war, the media ask the questions, he provides the answers but knowing how fickle Arsenal supporters can be, it is a risky business. The media lap it up such is the paucity of genuine talent for the national team. It is lapped up in the stands because of the paucity of anything in recent weeks.

His performances this season have underlined the potential but they have all been at home. Arsenal’s travails have been on their travels; can Oxlade-Chamberlain provide the spark away from The Emirates? Perhaps but it seems more likely than Andrey Arshavin will be used in those games. This morning’s observations on the Russian from Amy Lawrence pinpoint his problems exactly, ones that the manager is surely aware of but has no inclination to solve simply because they do not fit tactically. And also overlook his performances which have delighted, have come from the left wing.

That was when he was in the side on a regular basis and for someone who was pivotal in his national team, hailed as a world superstar before signing for the club, there is an ignominy in being deemed no more than a regular substitute. Prior to this season, he has been involved in a goal every other game on average – either scoring or assisting – but this time it is one every four games. For all of his manager’s failings in not getting the best out of Arshavin, the player too is culpable for producing his form on a consistent enough basis. There in the problem; lack of playing time will not help his cause and it is a cause worth fighting for. Even out of sorts, he is capable of the mercurial moment that changes a game something which has not been evident this season.

Team news is better with Bacary Sagna a possible returnee from the bench, surely too short of match fitness to start? That means Johan Djourou is likely to keep his starting place although Yennaris’ perfomance in the second half suggested he might do well as a specialist right back. Villa have pace on the flanks and in attack which may sway the manager’s choice given the damage done by United last weekend. Whilst Wenger makes no secret of his targets for the season, a strong line-up today is surely required. The FA Cup, like last season’s Carling Cup, offers the chance of mentally enhancing silverware, especially with the number of big clubs exiting the tournament thus far.

My line-up for this afternoon, fitness permitting, would be:

Szczesny; Yennaris, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen; Ramsey, Song, Arteta; Walcott, van Persie, Oxlade-Chamberlain

Will last weekend have influenced Arsène’s thinking on substitutes? I doubt it, I hope not. The crowd should not deflect the manager from his course. By all means learn from the mistake tactically but not for the sake of keeping the peace. Were that the case, the minor view pushed by Justin Hoyte in the press this morning will be consumed in the headline fog of Winterburn and Merson.

As part of your big match build-up, pop over to Arsenal On This Day for a fine win from 1972. Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. morning all

  2. I think Acryllic Altair is actually Paul Merson

  3. hope we start with yennaris today a natural right back gives more balance and attacking threat to the side, sagna should be introduced slowly

  4. I think, and hope, he’ll start Yennaris.

Djourou just does not cut it in that position for me.

I know a few are all for Podolski – I’ve sat on the fence thus far, convinced it was unlikely anyway. However, having looked at his record, and watched him play recently I’m hoping this bid is nonsense.

He scored 15 goals in 71 Bundesliga matches at Bayern and was then transferred back to Koln where he got 2 goals in 27 games. He’s found his feet since (pay attention Chamakh) but he’d command a big transfer fee and has failed in the recent past at a big club. He’s great internationally and can play across the line but surely this would be a BIG gamble wirth the sensible money on him going back to Koln in 2 years time at a third of the cost.

There must be better options than this.

  5. With you on both points Jonny. Not sure about Podolski but if true, it puts those who claim we are doing nothing to shame. Won’t shut them up though.

  6. On this day, January 29th 1965 Arsenal played Peterborough in the FA Cup 4th Round Proper at London Rd.

‘Club Chatter’ asks ‘How many times have we expressed the wish that the FA Cup draw would pair us with Arsenal? Today that wish has been granted and we extend the greatest possible welcome to the Arsenal. It will be remembered that they provided us with the opposition at the opening of our new floodlights in February 1960’

Pre Hillsborough we read ‘We appeal to all supporters today to assist us by crowding in as close as possible and getting to their positions in good time before the match. The ground stewards from Arsenal Football Club have kindly agreed to assist us and we ask all supporters to assist them as much as possible’

Very respectful, football in a different era.

In keeping with that, Tom Sharp, their Secretary in Supporters’ Club Notes writes:

‘Today we welcome the many Arsenal supporters who have probably paid their first visit to Peterborough for the purpose of giving vocal support to their famous team. We do hope that at the end of it they will have seen a good game and that they will go home with happy memories of their visit to Peterborough. In conclusion, perhaps I should say that this evening, in our Ballroom, we are holding a Dance which is fully licensed, tickets are 5s each, If any of our Arsenal friends would like to join us we should be very pleased to see them. For their benefit I might add that the Ballroom is in the Grandstand.’

For those Arsenal fans not tempted there was an alternative:

‘Whether Hunting, Fishing, Racing, Rowing, Cricket or Playing Football. The meeting place for Sportsmen is the Elephant & Castle, Westgate.’

Host and Hostess, Ron & Dorothy.

    I’d give it a go.

As a reminder of what ‘success’ means for the majority of football clubs, the Posh’s Role of Honour lists as their triumphs to date:

    Midland League Champions 1956, 1957, 19587,1959, 1960.

Football League 4th Division Champions 1961.

Northants Senior Cup Winners 1961, 1962, Joint Winners 1964

    Norfolk Invitation Cup Winners 1962

A double tucked away in there in 1962.

Want a second hand car? Donalds’ First XI cars include a 1963 Ford Cortina for £495, A 1962 MG Magnette, ‘a beauty’ for £595 or a 1961 Bedford Workobus ,’this will get 12 down to the match’, for £275.

Sounds a bit steep to me. I remember my Dad buying a brand new Beetle in 1961 for £990.

On a different note, within a heavy black border we are told of the loss ‘of the greatest statesman of our time, Sir Winston Churchill …to (whom) we owe our freedom today. Our sympathy goes out to Lady Churchill and family in their great loss. We share their sorrow today and with them we will remember with pride for many years to come the greatest Englishman of our generation’

    The teams that day were:

Peterborough Utd – Duff, Cooper, Birks, Crowe, Rankmore, Orr, Barnes, Conmy, Dougan, Deakin, McNamee.

Arsenal – Burns, Howe, Clarke, McLintock, Ure, Court, Skirton, Radford, Baker, Eastham, Armstrong.

Derek Dougan went on to some success at Wolves’ and , on his league debut in 1959, scored against Arsenal for Blackburn Rovers.

Here is yesterday football result : Peterborough Utd 2 Arsenal 1

  7. ‘Bedford Workobus’ I’ve never heard of such a thing but it tickled me for some reason.

Also like the hosts ‘Ron and Dorothy’ bet she was ‘Dot’ to her friends. Marvellous.

  8. The Laub experiment seems like a scientific experiment worth pursuing!

  9. i too think podolski will not add to our team significantly, on the dj issue i think he can do a job in an emergency but no more than that as he adds nothing going forward and also slows us down im still hoping for hazard and vertagon and that will do

  10. Definitely Dot.

Whatever happened to those names from my childhood?

  11. Love the old school names – my rabbits are called Wilberforce and Clementine.

AorB – You want Hazard and Vertonghen. In this window?

Someone’s in for a disappointing Christmas.

I’d be beyond excited if we somehow clinched Hazard but I’m resigned to him ending up elsewhere.

  12. Although its felt (to me) a long month, in terms of actual playing time I think we just had the closest we are likely to get to a mid-winter break.

With the exception of Manure, it’s hard to think of any major side that will have benefitted from this (relative) downtime as much as Arsenal. And for the Mancs, with just the one serious competition remaining, this advantage won’t be as great for them as it surely is for us.

So, with the returnees joining the ever-presents who are nowhere near the burn out they have previously reached at the start of previous Februaries, I would argue we are as well set to go into the season’s second half as we have been for some years.

Factor in the rise and rise of a certain Oxlade-C combined with the numerous key- player absences for most of our rivals and I’d say we have everything to play for.

Whether all our fans share this belief is a moot point but I’m pretty sure the players will be well up for it.

But, in a game of marginal chance, one can but hope our entire support can get a grip on themselves and ensure EVERY advantage we can secure for ourselves are fully exploited.

    Looking forward to February …

  13. Would start Rosicky instead of Ramsey for this one. Give the lad a breather.

The Podolski bid was never going to come off. £8m for a player who’s consistently in the national team, doesn’t want to go anywhere in Jan and whose club don’t want to sell in Jan? Hardly an offer they can’t refuse.

Hoping we come back in the summer and get him. Would be a huge improvement on Park and Chamakh.

  14. James –

*Might* be a huge improvement. Still a huge gamble for reasons already outlined.

Can’t see him being sold for less than £15M – we can do better, SURELY?

  15. Nice write up YW.

funny stories in the paper of Liverpool trying to get M City to take Carrol of their hands in exchange for Tevez. A cunning plan without doubt, but with one minor oversight. Why the fuck would M City (with Ballotelli/Dzeko/Aguero) be remotely interested in Carroll?

  16. Podolski is a decent player, and I do think he would suit our style of play very well. Remember that is playing in a very poor Koln team. Could we do better? Probably. But we he improve our squad? Yes, he would.

He would be a better option as back up to RvP than we currently have, and he could comfortably operate in our wide berths meaning that he would not just sit on the bench until RvP was not available. It would be a signing which makes sense.

  17. You live out there Andy – why did he fail so conspicuously at Bayern?

    Misuse?

  18. Djourou has filled in well as a RB. He can do a job there for us, but Yennaris has shown he can also be relied on, is actually a right back and the only time Johan looks wobbly is against pace. So, for that reason, Yennaris should get the nod today.

Please give it a fucking rest with the Podolski transfer shizzle man. It’s bollocks. Least I hope it is.

  19. Why dont we see if Dalglish will be interested in a swap deal involving Carroll and Squillaci? I think AW could turn the big Geordie lump into a decent centre back! :)

  20. Jonny, nah not really. It was just one of those moves that didn’t work out.

  21. There are some lovely images created in my mind with that one Cbob. I particularly like the thought of the dance after the game. I wonder if any Arsenal fans attended. I could never imagine opposing fans being so accomodating now days.

I think there will be a different type of atmosphere today. Hopefully more like Carling Cup games, where fans are excited at having been given the opportunity to see a game, perhaps for the first time this season, or indeed the first time ever. They will make the most of it by getting right behind the team, unlike many of the regular ticketholders who have a ‘right’ to boo, moan and complain.

2-1 to Arsenal, the Ox to score would get my money. Well 50p at least.

  22. Once we got 3 victorys in a row acrylic will be gone like the rest of the moaners….

  23. Podolski- good player that would improve our squad. Is there better out there, yes, can we get them in January, no – looks like its gonna be too soon to even get Podolski.

I would start with AA23 today, but play him centrally. Hes just not cut out for out wide. sure let him wander out there when there is space but not start out there. Id also bench Ramsey, just for a rest, he looks a bit tired.

    ———SZCZ
    Nico – BFG – Kos – Verm
    —–Song Coq
    ———AA23
    Ox—————–Ryo
    ———RVP

  24. The knives are out unfairly for le boss. Beware the ides of March. The baying mob headed by that cretin Merson…honestly…for
What brain cells he has got left he could try a better argument. Wenger a flop?????. The opportunity cost of a glittering new stadium and managing the debt and move is sacrificing short term success and marquee signings. Wenger has transformed this club into a Superclub. Even the invincibles failed to cut it in Europe amd now we are regular participants and contenders. As for Arshavin there is some argument that playing him in an unatural position has stiffled his game. Why does Wenger not play him behind RVP in home games with theo and ox who have more
Energy on the flanks and can track back?Sad news about Jacks injury though. Does this change the transfer policy for Jan?where is Diaby? A tough game ahead. But how satisfying would it be to beat Mcliesh today. 1-O to the Arsenal

  25. Personally, I’d have skipped the dance and headed for the ‘Elephant & Castle’ matty. Especially after a defeat.

It was quite a charming invite though. It’s clear that no one expected any trouble or anything other than a civilised occasion with two sets of fans enjoying themselves.

As you say, hard to imagine now.

The ‘Honours’ list should bring home the reality of football support for 99% of fans out there. No trophy for 6 years? Pfft!

  26. I should also think it might be wise to write Jack off for the season and try get an attacking midfielder in now if possible. Surely Yohann Gourcuff would like a way out of Lyon? Hed be worth a punt no? Even with Jack back they could both still play and would also ensure rest time and rotation competition.

Im watching the Koln – Shalke game. Podolski and co are getting their arses handed to em. That kid Draxler looks a good’n

  27. DEise

Ryo??? You sure man? As for Arshavin, I’ve long wondered why he isnt played centrally TBH? Would suit him and the team better. And yeah, even with Jack fit, I’d like us to sign a top creative midfielder and Gourcuff would be well worth a punt and a bit of a typical Arsenal signing; big name player, lost his way a bit and in need of revitalising his career elsewhere. Bit like Denis really! :)

  28. Goonerandy

I know you were probably pissed last night when you posted, but stil man. I said we potentially the best back 5 in the league when all fit. That dosnt necessarily mean each individual player is the best in their position. Jeeez man. Sorry, but that is just too dumb, even for a drunken kraut rock lover! :)

And anyway, I really think Santos was beginning to show how well he complemented our style of play as well as his defensive partners. He could indeed be the best LB of his ilk and thats because there aint another LB in his ilk! :)

  29. “I am ambitious, I want the FA Cup & Champions League. I’m very demanding and Arsenal fans have not seen the real Mikel Arteta yet”.

  30. Yeah Dex id play Ryo for his pace. If AA23 is central then 2 speed merchants to cover the flanks in Ox and Ryo is a good bet. Plus either would tear Hutton a new one.

Christian Erikson just scored a belter for Ajax against Feyenoord – he looks a player but is sooner have a player in his prime years than a teenager – we have enough of those

  31. Good day ACLFers

Happy to be on the blog again. It’s been a tough month for us league wise, but let’s hope the FA cup gives us much joy this season. I’ll subscribe for the joy I felt when TH12 scored against Leeds today again. Something to crown this month with. We have a great opportunity to do well in this competition now Ąπϑ I hope we can rise to the occasion.

Here’s to a victory (with any kind of scoreline).

  32. Deise

I think Ryo could well be on the bench today, although I can’t see him starting. Although it would be good to see him get some game time, finally.

Funny you mentioning Hutton as McLeish has found a player he can relate to; a minless clogging thug.

  33. Have to stop Darren Bent.Doesnt do nothing for 90mins except score

I would swap a win today than a win at Bolton. We are not going to finish 4th so lets try and win a trophy for a change. With no Citeh and Utd we wont have a better chance

    Unleash the Ox

  34. “If Thomas Vermaelen plays on Sunday, it will be only his second ever appearance in the FA Cup” – wow how has this happened!!

Dex – with Theo, Ox or Ryo on Hutton its a red card waiting to happen i reckon.Id start with Ryo purely for the ‘unknown’ element, then bring on Theo or Henry just to rub it in. :)

  35. I`d go for Yogi`s starting XI except I`d play Arshavin instead of Ramsey & Miquel instead of D,jourou.

Arshavin should get as close to RVP as possible. It`s about time we saw him given a chance to do damage from a more central position. Arteta & Song should just hold & allow the front four to do their stuff.

After his Gus Ceasar-esque performance against Man Ure I would expect D’jourou to start on the bench. Kos is an accomplished full back & has the pace to deal with Agbonlahor. Moving TV alongside Mert should not weaken is through the middle & Miquel should be OK at left back.

It would do wonders for morale to get a win today but the crowd have to be patient & get behind the team come what may.

  36. Deise

Watching the game as well. There was one player we could have signed from Ajax last january window and that was Suarez.Only cost £24m the same as we got for the useless Nasri. What a front two him and RVP

  37. Suarez?

The despicable racist, biting, cheating fucker with one of the worst goals to shots ratio in the Prem.

Do we NEED any more players with trouble converting chances?

    No thanks, all round.

  38. Only £24m? What a bargain. His goals scoring has been exceptional of late hasnt it! Racist cunt.

  39. Deise;

    Yeah man, to all that.

    Paulie

Your backline is kinda of the opoosite to Yogi’s man; young raw player at fullback. The only difference is, you have 2 players being played in unfamiliar roles, although Koscielny has done well at RB.

I’d stick with Yennaris at RB and TV5 at LB mate.

  40. Dan

Of course we can finish top 4 man. Dont be so defeatist dude.

  41. Dan – id take a win today and a win against Bolton thankyouverymuch! While our game would suit Suarez more than liverpools it looks now like hes more trouble than hes worth…!

The crowd need to get right behind the team right from the off. Only cheers will do, no jeers and sighs please ;)

  42. Although I am not one to put the blame of our poor form on the crowd at the Grove, I do think it has an effect on some players. And booing is definitely not something that should ever happen, un less we are booing opposition players and the ref.

  43. Whilst I’ve been busy making idiots and playing Fick FUFA 2012 I composed this potential starting eleven for today’s game:

Szczesny; Yennaris, Djourou, Koscielny, Vermaelen; Coquelin, Song, Arteta/Ramsey/Rosicky; Walcott, Henry, Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Per and RVP chillin’ on the bench. Along with Ryo? *sniffs*.
Please Wenger? Sort it out. FFS. If Ryo doesn’t make the bench, I may just start to boo and cry.

  44. Amy Lawrence is funny, I’l give her that.

Why, she had me convinced at the time that Adebayor was let go because he was apart of some kind of dressing room clique, as she described it. Nothing to do with his past and future record at various clubs, his talent for losing focus, for head-butting team-mates during games against his teams biggest rivals. Nope. No connection at all.

  45. I hope the manager plays a full team today, a real attacking lineup would be great if a few of the returning players are fit enough to start. Give the BFG a rest as I don’t see a particular threat in the air from the Villa front men, the quickness of Bent and Agbonlahor to be covered by Koscielny and Vermaelen. Something like:

    —————-Szczesny
    Sagna (Yennaris)-Koscielny-Vermaelen-Coquelin
    ———–Song-Arteta (Rosicky)
    ————–Arshavin
    Walcott————————Chamberlain
    ————van Persie

Subs: Fabianski, Mertesacker, Yennaris (Miquel), Ramsey, Rosicky (Benayoun), Park, Henry.

If we can get things tied up early get van Persie off at least.

Off to the game now (bloody replacement bus services!), enjoy all. COYRs!!!

  46. Block 4

If Coquelin’s fit, I’d have him at LB man.

  47. Well in fairness fins his on field attitude comes from his personality which may have indeed divided the dressing room….not saying thats the case but it certainly is a possibility

  48. Ade was sold coz it was clear he was a greedy twat, talked about himself in the 3rd person, was offside 20,000 times a game, lost us the league in 2008 when he failed to square the ball to his head buttee Bendtner to score a tap in and generally not being very motivated.

  49. Oh and fact that we sold him for a shit load of cash!

  50. Its funny watching the Sky Sports News hacks trying to big up this transfer window when there’s been absolutely fuck all goin on! Ooh “Sky sources” inform us that Liverpool have offered Carroll to City…. Hahahahaha! They are getting desperate as hell. Its just so fucking pathetic that everything has to be reported like in a sensationalist style, everything has to be in crisis, or just too dam brilliant.

  51. think djourou is out for today.. hamstring wasnt it?

  52. Deise, Adebayor was dropped before that the season came to an end.
Of course he would have been moaning in the dressing room. I don’t need a crystal football to work that one out. One or two more players on the way out, does not form a clique, but is standard practice for a football club in the off season. Twas a disingenuous and lazy metaphor.

  53. Of course there would be cliques at a club. That doesnt mean its a bad thing, or that it effects harmony n shit. It’s only natural you would get on better with some, more than others.

    As Fins says, very lazy.

  54. Anyone going today?

  55. korihikage

Damn, Djourou is out, you’re right. Following up from what Dexter was saying, JD’s been fine at RB (Marseille games for example) but for this game it’s be nice to see Sagna back! It would’ve always been a risk to throw Yennaris on, but he did ok last week, so why not if he starts today.
Looking forward to the game. Come on Arsenal.

  56. Park and ryo deserve a shot. Yennaris was solid against united and surely deserves a shot also. Gorcuff is good player. Was touted as the best thing since…er the last one…Milan didnt really work for him. Lost his way a bit. I would much rather goetze but with the lure of playing for the german giants Bayern looming strongly I think pigs could fly. Six years without a trophy does seem like a long time but I have faith in the boss unearthing another gem. COYG!!!!

  57. Jan Vertonghen really is a good defender. Ajax would be in real trouble without him today especially with the injuries they have currently.

  58. Spy

Not going today man, just league games for me mate.

    G4L

I would be gobsmacked if Dortmund allowed Goetze to sign for Bayern man. I know that’s what usually happens with good German players; they all go to bayern, but in this instance, we are talking about Dortmund, a big team themselves whose fans wouldn’t take too kindly to that transfer happening!

  59. fins

to be honest, i would rather see yennaris at rightback.

djourou was fine there for a few games, but gets exposed horribly when up against real, pacey wingers like in the past few games..

  60. Dexter – “Goonerandy

I know you were probably pissed last night when you posted, but stil man. I said we potentially the best back 5 in the league when all fit. That dosnt necessarily mean each individual player is the best in their position. Jeeez man. Sorry, but that is just too dumb, even for a drunken kraut rock lover! :)

Heh, I was a bit worse for wear :)

I suppose my point was that our team set up will never deliver the best defensive performance in the lge, we are just too adventurous. Kraut rock really is terrible as well; luckily the place I was is lat night was a real dump (a good thing in my book) but was playing stuff from Metallica to the Doors and the Stones so was a decent night all in all. Plenty of Led Zep as well if I remember rightly (which I may not given the state I ended up in).

  61. I agree with Dexter,
    No really,its not a joke,I do.Honestly.
From his team selection too Ade.
WTF? I am off back to bed. Hopefully the Universe will have realigned its self when I next awaken.

  62. Anyone think Djourou is actually injured?

  63. GA

Ha! Whatever floats your boat dude!

I do think our back line has the potential to be excellent. Kos and Vermealen, with Per coming in depending on opposition, with the best defensive RB on one flank and the best attcking/swashbuckling LB on the other who plays more of a winger tbh! Therefore, the CBs need to be mobile to cover and in vermealen and Kos, we have 2 such CBs man. I have massively high hopes for that back4.

And in jenkinson and Gibbs we have 2 brilliant understudies. Jenkinson got slaughtered and written off after OT, but he has shown more than enough since that baptism of fire. Cannot believe doomer cocksuckers have actually posted on here slating him. Actually, what am I on about, thats their raison d’etre innit.

  64. Do you think he has been “taken out of the firing line?”

  65. george – You mean hes ‘Almuniad’ ?

  66. Dexter – As it goes I agree, potentially our back line is great. Potentially.

  67. Haha! Hello George! The universe is definitely out of sync today man.

You suggesting Djourou has been dropped? Controversial

  68. Deise,that is exactly what I mean

  69. I have just completed a 2 our guitar jam with a pounding head. May go and lie down for a bit. :(

  70. Good win for Feyenoord against Ajax. Thats 2 games down today, 1 Bundesliga game from yesterday, 1 live dutch league game, now onto the FA cup with Sunderland V ‘boro. Then The Arsenal. Then i might round it off with Serie A Milan – Cagliari – a bit of scouting for our champions league game! Happy Days :)

  71. THats what Sundays are for Deise man. No La Liga later?

  72. Na Dex i aint got SkySports so i only catch those in the pub mostly – and after the football marathon today theres no chance in hell the misus is lettin me out to the pub for pints and footie later ;) Might stream it………..

  73. Ollie Holt said on the Sunday Supplement that “Wenger has been overachieving for 15 years. What do Arsenal fans expect? How many miracles do they want from him. They must adjust to the new financial realities which mean they cannot compete with City,Chelsea and United. It is just not possible anymore”

Wow,A Journalist who actually sees things as they are.Quite novel really.I with he would tell his colleague John Cross.

  74. Ha, fair points there Deise!

    George

That is a turn up for the books man. Especially from someone as smug as Holt too. Bet Woolnough wasnt happy about one of his mates spouting such stuff about Wenger

  75. I dont think it was overachieving george. We achieved what we deserved with the players of the ilk of Bergkamp/Vieira/Henry/Pires/Overmars/Freddie/Adama/Sol/Keown/Cole/Lauren etc. Those players in those teams deserved to achieve what they did.

The same applies to a very young squad full of players yet to win a trophy. They came close on a number of occasions but just fell short. They would have had a better chance if some of the better ones had stayed (you know who im talking about) a bit longer.

Now its about readjusting and getting back to a better mix of youth and prime international talent. Sure you cant get the players when City/Chelski offer what they can but there are plenty of players out there (and already in the squad) that can be molded to a team capable of challenges to and winning of the top prizes

  76. No he was not Dexter.Kept trying to get Ollie to have a go,but to his credit he was having none of it.And he was so adamant about it,that the others kept schtum

  77. Wow! I am surprised by that george.

    Deise

I think what he means by overachieving, is the fact that we dont have the resources of other clubs, yet have stayed at the top table consistently. Sure the spuds are having a brilliant season by their standards and Everton did a few years back, but they can only manage it once in a blue moon.

I do think we have been unlucky not to win more tbh, but still, in the context that the journo was using, we have over achieved. Dont mean we shouldnt expect to win stuff, but we should also be realistic and thankful too man.

  78. Dex/ thanks for the reply, up here on me ownsome today(apart from 60.000 that is)

  79. Boro one up, great volley from Robson. Justin Hoyte plays for Boro, forgot that, hope they win for his sake then.

  80. Spy

Ha! No probs man, dont get too lonely there dude! :)

  81. He did not Overachieve doing the double in his first full season ,with the nucleus of a team that finished 5th the year before he came in?
You don’t think an unbeaten season is overachieving, even with those players?

Sorry but I have to disagree.

  82. I would have said what Dexter said .Had I been a tiny bit smarter.

  83. No booing if Wenger fucks things up today please spy!!!!

  84. In that sense then george ANY win or record book entry is an over-achievement!! ;)

  85. Hahaha! You tell him Dukeyg!

  86. Duke/ I have my banner ‘ No Booing allowed’

  87. Win or Lose, lay off the Boos!

  88. Dex – we do have the resources to be top 4 every year, just like other clubs and we have met those targets consistently. Not for 1 minute do i take that for granted, its great going. Yes i agree we dont have what City/Chelski have when it comes to financial backing from billionaire owners. So in that sense we are at a major disadvantage. And i would argue that we would have won more had Chelski not turned into what they did at the time they did.

  89. We WILL have the resources once the stadium is bought n paid for. While at Highbury we didnt man and the move made finances even tighter in this short-mid term period. I don’t think you fully get that mate? I am often called out for moaning and saying I want signings etc, yet even I can see what Holt meant Deise. He is right, IMO.

  90. I can see what he means when he talks about the resources Dex, i get that. But to say we have over-achieved is not a correct call in my opinion. What we won while at Highbury was fuckin brilliant and was achieved by players of top top quality – hardly over achieving. What we have done since the move of stadium i doubt a lot of other clubs/managers could have done BUT it was what was planned for – it was the achievement targets. Now had we won the league i might be inclined to say it was an over achievement BUT we didnt win the league, nor any of the cups.

  91. You dont get it mate. So, no point flogging poor old Shergar any more! :)

  92. we’ve got the resources
we will have more once the wage structure and sponserships are sorted

the stadiums not an obstable anymore…hasnt been for a few years now..sorry dex.. ;)

need a win today..i hate to think of the reaction if it goes down the shitter..

  93. City and Chelski didnt have the resources/financial backing for the last 15 years they have now!

  94. Lol,Yeh Dexter ,no more than 7 lashes allowed now under the new rules.Put the whip down.

  95. We do not have the resources to compete with the 3 mentioned by Holt.
Get real we are a country mile behind.A different ballpark even.

  96. walcott starting?? are you mad? i wouldnt let him near the bench after last week.

  97. Not for 15 years we havent george. Im not debating the resources either. Im saying calling what we have done for the past 15 years isnt over-achieving when you consider the resources we do have……

  98. Jonny

No we havent man. We have had more cash last 2 seasons max, we will have more though, thats the whole point of the move, or how it was sold anyway.

    George

Quite scary how many necro horse fetishists there about these days. :)

  99. its a balancing act isnt it george..
we’ll never be able to compete with the the hey big spenders in terms of money pissed down the drain..

but that still doesnt explain why we have been outspent by the likes of west brom..

it all depends how you define re investment..some ppl moan about lack of transfer activity and use that as the yardstick that we are tight..

we aint tight cos we have the 4th highest wage bill so its not a totally truthful assessment
if you look at the money we spend on wages we could easily have a few more quality players in there…

we have the resources..we just mispend it occasionally.. we have flaws in the way we use our resources and over the last 2 years especially its stood out like a sore thumb..

  100. Ahh Irishgooner, you feckin hater you!

  101. Looks like we have accidentally walked in on a necro-equine fetish party PG. My favourite whip is at the dry cleaners, unfortunately.

  102. Consolsbob – I don’t know if you’ve seen Yogi’s new blog – Arsenal on the Day – In case you haven’t he’s basically just half-inched your idea… I hope you get half the royalties and we don’t get a lot of embarrassing Facebook style lawsuits…

  103. Well said Oliver Holt. Ta for that, pedantic george.
We have been consistently in the top four, we always qualify for the CL. We’ve been short of trophies recently, but we are only outdone in the League or CL by clubs with far greater resources.

And I reckon that winning the league without losing a game, a once-in-a-century feat, is a good example of overachievement.

    ***

Good post YW – but you should know by now that the armchair managers have no shame and are unabashable (if that’s a word!).

  104. No we haven’t what?

  105. Sorry I ran away yesterday, George. That was a good story… there always is one. Wigan? Good lord. Well…. I guess Dennis brought a great deal kicking and screaming into the enlightenment. Wigan’s loss is Arsenal’s gain. We’re pleased to have you.

  106. No FunGunner – it was a once-in-a-century achievement, richly deserved. :)

  107. ITS. KICKASS TIME. MACLEASHS BUM WILL DO FINE.
GOOD LUCK TO THE GUNNERS TODAY.
    UP. THE. GUNS. !!!!!!!!!

  108. @ goonerkam
    ha ha!

  109. And Djokovic beat Nadal. I am having a good day so far, please can it continue.

  110. I hope Francis Coquelin starts and we get to see the best centreback in the league play at centreback.

  111. hope yennaris and Miguel are picked at fullback and tv to partner kosher at CB.
AA TO replace. Aaron in second half .
Henry no longer plays at left wing In the MLS. Due to lack of his pace from THE ARSENAL DAYS. He has more of a free playmaker role in center of the field where. His still exceptional game reading quality helps the RED BULLS. That is where he pulls the strings and orchestrates the game flow.

  112. Any. TURKISH. GOONERS OUT THER who know a little about. BURAK.??

  113. Sagna may even start. Remember that overhead goalline clearance against Villa? What a special defender that man is…

  114. never have rated Podolski myself. We can do better with less outlay of resources.

  115. fab,coq,mert,kos,verm,song,ros,ram ox, vp ,walcott

  116. Team in full: Fabianski, Coquelin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Song, Ramsey, Rosicky, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Van Persie.

Substitutes: Szczesny, Sagna, Arteta, Benayoun, Arshavin, Park, Henry.

  117. subs szc,art ,park ,herny, sagna, ben, arsh

  118. Team in full: Fabianski, Coquelin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Song, Ramsey, Rosicky, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Van Persie.

Substitutes: Szczesny, Sagna, Arteta, Benayoun, Arshavin, Park, Henry.

  119. An early goal would be nice. Settle the nerves. Mine and theirs.

  120. Pretty happy with that team all said. Wonder what odds Rosicky for a goal..?

  121. Nice one, Deise.

  122. Good day to you FUNGUNNER. sorry about your. Roger at the A. Open.

  123. Oh, I’ve seen it Limpar. There’s some good stuff there. One a cup match against Argyle in 1932 that I’ve got the Programme for.

Litigation. There’s a thought. Would you be a witness?

  124. Thanks for the sympathy, Goonerkam. I am bearing up, as they say.

That team is pretty much the strongest we could have put out, under the circumstances. Come on, Arsenal!

  125. Sunderland fans booing at half time. Anti-O’Neil? Nah. Anti-being 1-nil down.

Arsenal aren’t the worst fans in the league – we’re not that special. This is just the worst generation of football fans yet. Countrywide cuntery.

  126. Thanks all for the birthday wishes, getting too old if how I feel today is anything to go by. Cant even risk a shut-eye coz I’m afraid I’ll miss the game. A win will do wonders for me though.

Dexter alot of people dont see the big picture, if they did the “7 years trophyless” line would never be used because despite not winning anything we have achieved alot as a club, which is a miracle when you look at everything the club has done.

Jonny you get your wish, chamberlain is playing,Yennaris gets a rest as Coquelin starts and Sagna makes the bench.

Let us win this boys.A win is a win so I will take any scoreline as long as we win.

  127. jonny i’d rather stick my roubles on keane scoring.

  128. Belated happy birthday, firstlady.

  129. mattgoonerknight

Long odds Jonny…but I’ve been really impressed with his last few outings – found a few extra gears from somewhere.

The fact RVP is starting shows we’re not fucking about but it also makes me nervous.

I wonder if we’d had a better January whether or not he’d have been rested for this ?

That and the fact that Henry has only just come back from his tweak – had he been fully fit, in conjunction with a better January, we may of seen him get the nod to start.

Thought AA might start also – get back on the bike at the earliest opportunity etc..

  130. As for the lawsuit, I see myself as the less nerdy one who got the girls. Yogi will have to be the creepy one.

  131. bob,

wtf happened in the cricket yesterday!.

the spinners have us in a right spin, ( went to work thinking we would get skittled out though by the spin)not looking forward to the up coming tests. goodbye the number 1 test team a.

  132. It was a trian crash duke.

The batsmen have been awful all series. They looked severely undercooked to me. No excuse for that in this day and age.

Too many resting on their laurels perhaps, I’m looking at you Pieterson.

Just not very professional at all.

  133. mattgoonerknight

What are the odds of AA coming on for Oxo late in the 2nd half?

  134. Sure thing, Cb. Soon as I saw it I put my suit in the dry cleaners. Fair’s fair and this is just cheek. Granted he’s tarted it up with some archive cuttings and all that but come on…. it’s brazen. Let’s get im.

  135. Birthday buddy! Hope you feel better than I do, firstlady. Enjoy the game today…

  136. Yup, Yogi is definitely the skinny, gimpy one.

  137. I’m Justin Timberlake.

  138. Oooo. Did I just say that? Ignore me…

  139. sunderland or midds v ARSENAL

  140. Stevenage for another Cup upset I reckon; Freeman scoring the winner!

  141. I hate that we are playing our game after the draw has been made.

  142. stevenage V arsenal lite.

    lucky cunts.

  143. Nice looking bench. Looks like we are returning to full strength.

  144. Stevenage are playing well. Tottenham are playing poorly. Manager in the dock. I fancy The Nidge in that one.

  145. A roar for the Ox in my joint.

  146. The best thing to come out of the centrebacks as fullbacks era has been Nico Yennaris.

  147. What’s our tempo like?

  148. We’re all over ‘em, FG.

  149. goody goody.

  150. @ LA
Are you back in the country, or watching from a bar somewhere in South America at the dead of night?

  151. Great play by Theo but got his shot all wrong. Ramsey shouldn’t complain however, the pass was never on, there was a Villa player right in the way if Theo had tried it.

  152. Afternoon all. Enjoying it all so far. Early days but only one team in it so far.

  153. Hmm. repeating myself a bit. All the excitement of the cup getting to me.

  154. hiya steww

  155. I wish, FG. I’m back.

Very unusual watching a right flank with a fullback in it. Strange, rare and wonderful. Like a butterfly. Nico Yennaris is my new favourite player.

  156. Really really glad Le Coq is back. I got a lot of time for the youngster.

  157. Hi FG – Limps you have been sorely missed it’s been great having you back. I too love little Nico.

  158. Tom Vermaelen slipped a cunning index finger in Bent’s eye early doors. Baresi style dark arts.

  159. Good to see you too mate.

  160. Welcome back then Limpar. Le Coq isn’t even a RB, not really. Lovely player, though. Yennaris is unlucky to miss out on the bench but Le Coq is quite experienced and obviously no need to say anything about Bac.

  161. End to end stuff. Proper cup tie now. Ox showed his lack of experience giving the ball away and committing himself with our defence still up following the corner.

  162. Come on boys!

Or come on gays, as Santos would say.

  163. Rosicki looks lively. Qould be nice to see him having a good run.

  164. In a silly way it’s a shame RVP has to play centre forward. He is such an elegantly beautiful player it’d be nice to see him on the ball more.

  165. Ramsey has great energy.

  166. Bollocks bollocks bollocks.

  167. Doh. Come on lads heads up.

  168. Fabianski isn’t really a goalkeeper in the traditional sense of the word, is he? oh dear…

  169. Great recovery from LeCoq

  170. Here we go. Will be a tough test for the team.

You can not really blame Fab for the goal. The lack of understanding with the back four is a result of a lack of playing time.

  171. i have never known us to pass back to the keeper so bloody much,

  172. That goal has me confused.

  173. On his day he’s as good as I’ve seen LA but on other occasions, well …

  174. duke – I don’t mind that as long as the keeper passes it out to one of his team mates I hate it when he just hoofs it clear. I like us building slowly from the back.

  175. Ox is being taken care of by fullback and Ireland. He’ll learn how to play when there is less space.

  176. Some last ditch defending from Villa. Feel we are squeezing them

  177. Have we got time for the pressure to pay off?

  178. Cunt went straight through TRz

  179. Gah, we need that goal. But Rosicky has been magnificent, hasn’t he?

  180. Quite unbelievable. We do everything right and somehow they go in 2 up? This is a crazy game.

  181. And to think that Bent is a self confessed gooner!

  182. THat was unfortunately a top class goal from Bent.

  183. We’re fucking shit….

  184. well well.

i dont know what to say… wenger needs to sort something the fuck out. try something fukin different ffs wenger.

theo upfront and aa in the center.

  185. We are in a kind of a trouble now by the looks of it.

Stay calm and do not panic.

  186. I mean i know I’m biased but we have had them absolutely on the ropes. How is this 2 – 0? I’m speechless.

  187. Predictably caught on the break. Not sure what Per was up to joining the attack there. Not the bloody 90th minute is it. Even our stay at home defenders don’t stay at home…. cue the boos….

  188. We have been better for virtually the whole half, they get two half chances and score. Football is a crazy game. Mind you, I think we can still come back from this. No need for the hair-dryer, the players haven’t done all too much wrong. We need to continue playing our game.

  189. LOL

Thats all i can do, just laugh, its ridiculous

  190. Arteta in for Rosicky please.

  191. Fucking hell…how the hell…how the fucking hell are we 2 fucking nil down…terrible defending..back to the problems with squeezing when there is no pressure on the ball…farkin helllllllllllllllll

    Come on Arsenal…..

  192. steww we have not had them on any ropes. they have looked more dangerous then us.

  193. Limestonegunner

I had a bad feeling as soon as I saw Merts holding the ball up in the opposition box. He was playing forward also v. Swansea in the latter stages but this isn’t where he can help. He isn’t actually that great in the air.

  194. @KG
Why for Rosicky? I haven’t seen him do much wrong.

  195. KG what the fuck?
Rosicky is our best player by a fucking mile.
Have a word with yourself FFS

  196. Lets hope his is going to be a game of 2 halves..

  197. This looking like a smash and grab. Hold strong brothers and sisters it’s not done yet.

  198. Feel like I’m going mad.

  199. mattgoonerknight

Over committing in order to get an instantaneous equaliser.

    De ja vu

We can still do it….maybe….well, probably not.

    COYG!!!!

  200. Limestonegunner

We took a risk and paid, but there are other ways to press forward.

The Ox has been good. Rosicky too, except for the tame shot.

Now Villa will sit back and it will take some cleverness to unlock a packed defense. Time for TH12, who can be tricky around the box?

  201. wow, we just cant do anything right atm can we?? our best team getting undressed by villa.. and no reinforcement in the horizont.. this is bad…

Whoever did whatever in the sumemr really did fuck up it seenms…

  202. lol Villa look really good…..

  203. @lime VIlla wont sit back they know that doing that is suicide, they will push on and that will kill us…

  204. Fuck sake…why always us???3 goals and the games is ours

  205. Poor Per wasn’t even in the picture when the ball hit the net.

We were all over them there, steww. Famous 2nd half come back coming up… Thierry with the 3rd… Ox and RVP to draw us level.

Having said that we might need a 4th and 5th if we carry on defending like a netball team.

  206. well how long since we score more then 1 goal…now we need 3!!

  207. r
If the same players come out for the second half I am going to stick my bottom lip out.

  208. down but not out…….ball movement and management is positive…..

  209. earlier this year we had a defect attack but a solid defence.. now we got?

  210. I’m shaking my head here, 9 shots 6 on target and yet we cannot score again… what is going on? I really want to draw some positives from the performance, but I think that in doing so I am taking away from all the negatives.

  211. Arsene Will not Re-inforce, whatever the coming weeks results, he said he wont sign and he wont. So any delusions of signing a player this january should be straight out of the window

  212. then again, if we do go out we will have more muscles to get that all important 4th place. FA cup is not important compared to that as we want CL next year too…

  213. Evil and PG, Arteta to tighten the midfield. Ramsey’s energy over the Rosicky’s skill.

  214. The performance of the season needed now. What is happening out there?

  215. @gooner4 life outplayed by AV? :P

  216. Limestonegunner

Who should come on PG? AA of course, for Theo? I am not so sure. I’d put TH in and around the box. I don’t know for whom.

Poodle, they were sitting back before and scored on the counter attack. Why would they do anything different now?

We dominated possession, corners, shots (10) and had more on goal with 5. They had 4 shots and 4 on goal, scoring two.

  217. signing a player is not the answer, collectively the team are just not playing up to the standard required at the moment. You could sign another player or even two but you are still left with another 9 in the team with the same issue.

  218. I am going to stick with moaning. Every time I defend the manager and players we fucking lose! :)

  219. ramsey needs a break.

  220. Agree with AW, 4th in the league is far more important . Not too fussed if we’re kicked out let’s focus on the league, we don’t have enough at the moment to chase on too many fronts…

  221. Limestonegunner

Well, Merts proves me wrong with a good header. Bad luck.

  222. need an early goal to seed optimism….

  223. Off the line. Yes Duke on the ropes. Last ditch defending, deflected clearances full stretch saves from their keeper. On the ropes.

  224. Tokala

Unfortunately the 2 are linked. WE lose today, the doom and gloom will be unbearable, it will mean we are still out of form and the media and fans will be even more revolting!

  225. @Tokala you will be very fussed about this if we do end no 5 though…

  226. I remember us being 2 nil down to Villa at Highbury. Henry got an injury time winner to make it 3-2.

  227. Brilliant move Theo, unlucky.

  228. Well said Dexter.

  229. this is why we are 2/0 down… Bent and Dunn scores on those.. thats why Villa is in the lead…

  230. Another brilliant move.

  231. TR7 is tha SHiiiiT!..he’s so positive going forward…

  232. We have come out brilliantly.

  233. mattgoonerknight

    Pen!!!

  234. poodle they haven’t had such difficult chances. Breakaway goals where the ball is saved and comes straight back to you different from being surrounded by six defenders,

  235. great pass by song

  236. 2 more…..

  237. RvP…. He scores when he wants!

  238. Limestonegunner

    Cool as a cucumber, RvP!

  239. Dont care what anyone says, Ramsey is the most dissapointing player on that pitch next to walcott

  240. Fucking hell. Tension.

  241. Get in there Robin. 2 more will do it.

  242. @steww true true, but we should be that much better that we should put thouse “difficult” chances.. why is that guy not red carded???

  243. Ramsay has been fine by me

  244. Glad we are showing fight.

  245. Isn’t that a sending off? As thoroughly last man as can be… oh well. Come back is on. Come on Arsenal…

  246. So thats 348 goals this calender month for Robin, or something like that.

  247. Limestonegunner

Excellent from Song. Need to keep up this intensity and quickly get back to 2-2. Force them to come out and play.

  248. Dunne sjould have been sent off…

  249. maybe i expect to much….

  250. We got a penalty? I can’t believe it! Now we will surely win.
    Great strike by Robin!

  251. RVP. Still everything to play for.

  252. I agree with you poodle and believe me it does frustrate me every time we miss but for my mental health I’m trying to stay positive,

  253. RvP..get in!…though I’d say we were lucky it was awarded. He wasn’t getting that ball

  254. now is not the time to slam our players…. what is needed is encouragement by supporters.

  255. Ramsey for all his running and energy, has a heavy touch and takes way too long to make decisions

  256. Didn’t Dunn go right through TR7 first half? That must now be two yellows surely…

  257. Limestonegunner

I agree it could have been a red but it was not the best of touches from Ramsey, understandably, that made it a bit iffy. But gnerally, no clearer n opportunity can you think of.

    Theo!!!!!

  258. Theo!!!!!!!!

  259. COYG

  260. What has Walcott done wrong today? Made some nice runs, created chances, great interplay with Coquelin. I feel he has played as well as Oxo so far.

  261. We are so overdue a goal from open play we are practically crowning…

  262. What a comeback! come on, lads! Theo needed that goal.

  263. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY at last a bit of luck

  264. muahahahah!!! fuck sake being an arsenal fan is not for the FAINT HEARTED.. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  265. And there it is! Theo’s Football Brain!!! Get in!

  266. Yes….. Theo with a header/shoulder/whatever !!!!!

    Love when we fight.

  267. And now he duly scored! That one is your humble pie, Moe!

  268. All of them count. Get in Theo.

  269. Limestonegunner

Now that failure to send of Dunne could really be big. Let’s hohpe it doesn’t matter.

  270. mattgoonerknight

    Roller coaster!!!

  271. @ LimparAssist | January 29, 2012 at 5:16 pm

“We are so overdue a goal from open play we are practically crowning…”

    ha ha ha ha ha!
    Have you got kids, Limpar?

  272. Oh how I love a comeback. Now lets push on.

  273. Limestonegunner

Because, we go on to score more and win this, of course.

  274. Just need to keep the pressure up without getting over-excited.

  275. why does it take a goal or two to make us start to play arsenal football?

  276. You were moaning about Theo before Moe? Care to continue chatting shit, or are you going to get benind your fucking team?

  277. This is where they are dangerous.

  278. Oh my bad, Moe you are continiuing chatting shit I see.

  279. Limestonegunner

    That’s disgusting, Villa fans.

  280. Ignore him Dexter. Let’s just enjoy our confidence being rewarded.

  281. These must be the fantastic away fans Alex MacLeish was talking about…

  282. Kos PENALTY!!!!!!

  283. Limestonegunner

Second penalty! Come on, let’s put this away. Kos has been immense the last several games in attack!

  284. True class from the Villa fans. Hope we kick you out good, damn c*nts.

  285. Brilliant Kosser

  286. WTF – so UnArsenal…

  287. Limestonegunner

Can RvP fool him again? Yes!!!!!

  288. RvP 3-2!!!!!!

  289. So Kos is now the best midfielder as well, now is he? Greedy…

    Robin is a genius.

  290. Evil

Not really, it remains a fact, just because we scored doesnt excuse the faults or make up for them

  291. Oh my. What a team what a crazy game.

  292. That’s how you help the attack, Per. Koscielny my man!!!

  293. mattgoonerknight

Pen!! Awesome Kossa!!! Fucking roller coaster!!!!!

  294. RvP – He scores *where* he wants.

  295. Thats why I love this team so much. They never fail to amaze and delight me.

  296. fucking hell when the preassure is on RvP is a good man to have….he is a Brontosaurus of a skipper!

He is more important to Arsenal than Gerarrd ever was for Liverpool.

  297. And we are back! Told you so. Whoever panicked after half time really needs to have a good look at themselves in the mirror.

  298. Yes…

    Kos is our creative defender.

    Crazy game.

  299. Limestonegunner

Let’s put one or two more past them but keep our shape defensively.

  300. Never write us off. Finally a 50/50 penalty decision being given to us.

  301. Its all about staying positive
    Keep attacking
    Momentum…

  302. Why do people love football much ?

  303. @ Evil | January 29, 2012 at 5:21 pm

True class from the Villa fans. Hope we kick you out good, damn c*nts.

    What have they done, Evil?

  304. Fucking amazing!!!!!

  305. @Moe
As I said, please tell me what he has done wrong so far. Especially in comparison to Oxo. I don’t really see how Theo has played worse than Chamberlain tonight.

  306. …haha, fouls by dunne & bent after goals by dunne & bent!

  307. Kozzer is a beast – a nice beast.

  308. Limestonegunner

Name of the game is possession in their half and creating some chances. Disciplined play. Take good opportunities. No Merts in the other penalty box! Kos doesn’t need to come forward anymore, though he has been terrific doing so.

  309. @FG
The ball was out for a goal kick for us and instead of giving it away they played volleyball for it for a good minute before some of the officials got a second ball and let us get on with it.

  310. Micky “fat boy” Quinn, on the Koz penalty; “Yes, I am afraid it was a penalty.” Says it all.

  311. its nice to see us pay off the refs for once!!

  312. look at Mozart go!!!!!!!

  313. thanks, Evil.

  314. Limestonegunner

If we see this out, this game could be exaclty the catalyst to propel a fantastic second half and recovery from our bad run.

  315. Hard to realise we’re only 1 up. Still game on. Hope we stay focussed.

  316. Now Rosicky needs to score or assist, get his goal-scoring touch back.

  317. We will have to be very careful defending our penalty area. The ref will look to ‘level it up’.

  318. im still critical… i think they loose the ball to easy and are helping VIlla looking more dangerous than they are. Comon Arsenal, disciplin, and enough guys back home.. Maybe Song to sit as a shield again?
    we need this win!

  319. Just hope we don’t take our foot off the gas….need to give them a shellacking!!!!!

  320. True Limps

Refs do like symetry, thats why a lot of em are so rotund.

  321. maybe we need Arteta to secure us? i dunno… mind you Rosicky is doing a good job…

  322. Shay Given is still going for that MOTM award, then?

  323. Ramsey is so hard-working he’s like Boxer the horse from Animal Farm.

  324. So unlucky Theo. Although Thierry used to say if the keeper saved it he had made a mistake. he thought he should put it where it couldn’t be saved.

  325. Limestonegunner

So much time left, so we do have to keep them under pressure and not relax. Concentration and determination needed. The boys will have it, I think, hope. I thnk some subs may be worthwhile for fresh legs. Maybe Arteta for Ramsey at 75 or Rosicky. Maybe bring on Sagna and shift Coquelin to the middle for Ramsey or Rosicky.

  326. Love you Limps. Brilliant.

  327. Limestonegunner

Benayoun maybe for Theo or the Ox, defensively.

  328. Rosicky for Arteta…Mozart’s been FANTASTIC!

  329. Evil

Theo? I was talking about Ramsey, where have i said anything bout theo?

  330. we need Arteta now! but i did think Rosicky had a decent game though, was he the right one to take offf?

  331. We have unquestionably lost Arteta at exactly the wrong time this season. Just as he’d cemented his place, got the team ticking around him he gets injured. Great to see him back on.

  332. Limestone

    Good thinking buddy.

Move Coquelin to DM with Arteta and Song, push Rosicky forward, sub Aaaron, just to freshen things up, bring Sagna on and maybe Henry for RvP? Although I bet Robin will be after a hatrick now!

  333. Arteta is the perfect man for the job here. You called it, poodle…

  334. Limestonegunner

Limps, yes. When have we ever received two penalties? Must watch out for that, which is why I hope we can keep the ball in their half and/or get another goal. Ref may take a borderline situation to “even” things up.

  335. Agree, Rosicky has been, as they say, “running the show”. I really hope we will see a lot more of him over the next few weeks and months. I still think he has a lot to give to the team.

  336. i think Benny for OxO we dont want him to have a stress fracture, plus Walcott is a bit stronger defencivley than Oxo?

  337. Moe

You;ved been slaging that many of our players off, you can’t even remember. Read back, you will find what you said.

  338. I leave the subs to the manager. They know so much more than us about fitness levels, they have their own plans as well. Also they know which players work well together what changes change the balance of the team and how.

  339. Agbonlahor’s off…great!
There goes their explosive option in attack
    Le Coq’s played him v.well

  340. Felt like I was going nuts before those three goals. Wouldn’t mind a couple more.

  341. keep it up moe! i think it subconciousley makes them pissed off and makes em want to prove you wrong.

  342. Steww

Bang on man, Arteta was playing brilliantly and really making us tick and then, boom! We lose him. So unlucky. Glad he’s back.

  343. one more goal would ease the nerves yes deffo!

  344. OX on one side Theo on the other – it’d terrify most defences.

  345. Steww

Where’s the fun in leaving the subs/formation/tactics/signings to the manager??? :)

  346. 1 more goal and …boy I love the Ox.

  347. WE NEED ANOTHER GOAL..we’ve slowed down….dangerous!
Villa are not out of it yet

  348. Per is not as safe as the rest on passing the ball is he? he seems to struggle a bit when there are no natural options..
And Song HAS to keep his dicipline..

  349. Quinn the qunt is willing a villa goal.

  350. Safe hands from Fab. Well done that man.

  351. Dex I think my comms are Romanian. Can only understand the players names which is perfect.

  352. Steww; Haha! You’re lucky!

  353. I actually scan the page looking for non English speaking streams.

  354. Limestonegunner

Aman, I was just going to say how comfortable the Ox looks in the side. Arsenal player–links up well with everyone but dangerous taking on defenders.

  355. Dexter

Wow, observing another players failures or areas they need to work on is considered slagging them off huh?

    You are an idiot

“I am going to stick with moaning. Every time I defend the manager and players we fucking lose!”

So you admit yourself your a moaner, which means you moan at the team and players as well.

    Seriously

  356. If you had to save Macleish or Pulis but couldn’t let them both die which would you choose?

  357. Moe

Who the fuck are trying to kid? You have been bitching like a baby, shut the fuck up you moron and the fact you think my post was serious shows how thick you are.

And spare us your footballing insights please

  358. Put a sock in it, McCleish you fat Scotch pillock. Have some decorum please, you’re at the Arsenal…

  359. Moe – hush, the rest of us are trying to enjoy the match.

  360. Haha! McLeish the twat, must be a friend of Moe’s.

  361. How fucking brilliant is it to see Bac back? At the back.

  362. Ox has really put in a good all-round game….

  363. And Isaac Hayes too.

  364. seriousley, why do we let oponents into the game again? its dangerouse and should be avoided….
Without the technical dominance of Nasri and Cesc you always get a heart attack from it too!

  365. Moe

Dont take it all to heart man, no offence meant.

  366. who is Isaac Hayes?

  367. poodle, I’m sure we don’t do it on purpose, it’s the other teams fault for carrying on trying. plain rude I call it.

  368. Welcome back bac and Thierry. We have missed you. Va va voom

  369. Yogi compared Thierry with Isaac Hayes when he reappeared a little heavy and bearded.

  370. Who is Isaac Hayes??? Wash yer keyboard out!! :)

    Bac’s back! Woop!

  371. What on earth is that? Some sort of specialist wide defender…

  372. despite villa’s goals…..Arsenal were energetic all match…..

  373. Wide defender? has he put on weight?

  374. Poor old Thierry. Things are a bit quicker than he remembers.

  375. What a brilliant brilliant cup tie. Great to share it with you all.

  376. Well done boys.

Ox will be a massive player. Him going past defenders as if they are not there is impressive.

  377. The name of today’s game is;

    TURNING POINT

  378. @ mattyboy | January 29, 2012 at 5:22 pm

“Thats why I love this team so much. They never fail to amaze and delight me.”

Hear hear. Wanted to agree at the time, didn’t want to jinx us before the match was over.

  379. Well that is fucking that…..Arsenalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  380. Nice work Steww!

  381. shit! This game almost killed me! who needs Hitchcock when you got Arsenal!

  382. Great second half, I am fully satisfied with what we saw. Everyone played brilliantly in the second half and we got what we deserved – the victory. Really happy and great to see Bac back. He will help us massively in the coming games. We really missed him!

  383. Well what a turn around that was. Awesome performance in the second half by the boys. Onwards and upwards.

  384. I hope Spy’s heart hasnt given out at the Grove!

But, lets all stop a moment and think about the poor twats who were waiting to post on here right about now. Imagine how sad they are that we won the game after turning around a 2 goal half time deficit. My heart bleeds for them.

  385. No, no, FG – there’s been some sort of tactical development at Colney. A quick, mobile defender deployed outside of the centreback… gets up and down the line and supports the midfield. Genius really… We should try it on the other side too.

  386. Rosicky..MOTM

    Ramsey…brilliant

    Theo..brilliant…

    RVP..Awesome..

Entire 2nd half team performance…To a man brilliant

Moaning, bitching, whining, booing fans…to a man STUPID!!!

  387. Bac back. The Cock and the Ox were excellent. Kos the usual monster. Oh yes, and then there’s that RVP fella…

  388. OVER!
What a boost for the Gooner nation.
    AW stood his ground
    Made no quick subs
The force was with us today
    Especially with TR7
Assault on Villa, they really couldn’t handle us
    We dominated.

Ox, Theo, Coq, Rambo, Kos..all of ‘em really
    Perfect confidence boost for February

    Very happy I am

  389. Anyone who has ever called TR7 deadwood should hold up their hand and apologise.

  390. Alex Chamberlain is fucking tasty down the left wing isn’t he.

  391. Who were the commentators today btw…biased does not begin to describe them…

  392. stew

god gave you a choice, if you dont want to read my posts then by all means dont.

    Dexter

I dont take things to heart, if i did, well then that would be quite the depressing life wouldn’t it

  393. Agreed. Rosicky MotM. We could have scored five through his inspiration after the break.

  394. PG @ 4.52. How about now sir? Keep the faith. Effervescent second half. :-*

  395. Just watch the number of post match comments drop rapidly…our “post-defeat” specialists will be missing till the next defeat, which is hopefully a while away

    UP THE ARSENAL!!!!

  396. Limestonegunner

Proud performance and a platform for a great run in the league. We’ll have to start finishing chances, 21 shots and none apart from a chest deflection and two very well taken penalties go into the back of the net!

I am sure that there will be a lot of Villa fans complaining about the second penalty on 606…, suck on those bitter lemons, Villains! It was a penalty and Bent is no defender. Typical striker’s goof.

  397. This comeback should shut a few loudmouths.

  398. I also look for streams in languages I do not understand.

In the age of digital television we really should have the choice of watching games with the commentator of our choice or no commentator at all.

The referee was ok for once! Still think we should have video tech sooner than later. It is inevitable, you know…

  399. We weren’t bad in the first half. We made two very bad mistakes, but we were all over them. The way we steam rolled them in the second half was a continuation of what we did right in the first.

I thought Rosicky was the best player on the pitch. He was our most creative player and our best tackler. Everyone else did well, especially Le Coq. That boy is going to be a stalwart for us in the coming years.

  400. Wow, just f@cking wow!

What a huge boost for the team.

We’ve got brilliant players, we just seemed to have lost belief for a while, this should have shown the guys what they are actually capable of.

At HT I feared the worst, I heard some booing, and I feared things would get ugly, but he team dug deep, I’d like to think they realized the boss needed them to save him, and they did.

Some great play out there, Kos, Coq, Ox, and more, stunning stuff.

Chamberlain looks like he will be something really special.

So very good to have Baccy back, and to see Arteta back on.

Lovely stuff, the lads need to take this to heart, an hopefully the supporters will realize the effect they can have on the team, both good and bad, he choice is theirs.

  401. Pat Rice must have really bollocked them at half time

  402. Ivan Gazispdis just gave an interview to Warren Barton and the muppets at Fox Soccer Channel. Barton and the panel asked him all the questions any idiot would and he shut them all up. He’s a good guy and is all in with the manager’s philosophy.

  403. mattgoonerknight

I know most people probably think Neil Warnock is a twat, but he’s just had an absolute Arsenal and Arsene love-in on ESPN – good man!! Get on TV more often!!!!

  404. well Tottenham is getting a way easy ride in this FA cup. Stevenage???

  405. Gains69

Just read thru the BBC live commentary thing on their website man. pathetic and disgusting the glle with which they post up negative bile man. My licence fee helps pay for that shite.

  406. I concur with Limestone.
We really need to improve our scoring ratio
buy boy, have we got some young gems on our team..

Ox & Coq are top quality.
And they haven’t started scoring yet.
Their energy coupled with Theo & Rambo’s is infectious
as long as their’s a quality CM to lead them.

Earlier in the season it was Arteta
Today we saw the great Tomas Rosicky.

This was just the kind of game to reboot our season
I hope we see a continuation @ the Reebok.

If we keep it up…the goals will come.

  407. MGK,

    Even twats talk sense occasionally.

  408. CORR: buy boy = but boy

  409. well giving Rosicky a new contract can be nothing but smart. For ones we are keeping the older players around to guide the youngers…

  410. Wenger: “I spoke with Jack Wilshere today. We have no real news. But it is better than expected. I hope it’ll only be a short setback.”

  411. 33 – Arsenal have set a new record for most consecutive games unbeaten at home in the FA Cup proper. – Optajoe

  412. The third goal just came at a perfect time, Villa fans deserve more of that. Lowest class of football supporters one can imagine. And to think that they boo’d McLeish for the quality of football!

    Up the Guns!!

  413. That was an Arsenal team, wasn’t it?

    Grit aplenty

Plenty oif it on here as well. I expected a lot of gloom at half time but there wasn’t.

Bloody good show people. Bloody good show Arsenal.

So. See you all on Saturday.

  414. Here’s hoping Ox’s emergence leads to AA getting less time on the wing & more in the middle of the park.

May “the forgotten” be psyched well enough to contribute when called upon.
    (AA, Marouane, Yossi, Djourou)

..i didn’t help notice Fabianski contributed quite a bit to the urgency in our game along with TR7. Occasionally dangerous with his quick throw-outs but really kept the game flowing forward.

I’m tempted to say we play better when we keep the tempo up.
    We’re a lot more sloppy @ mid-tempo

  415. G69
You are right we were not bad in the first half. But we were not good either,
We could never have come back playing like that.
We were fucked :) (were we not Jonny? )
But what matter most is that we did play better.A lot better .And give what has happened in January,That we did that speaks volumes for the team and Arsene.
I can not over emphasize how impressive that reaction was.
If any other team had done that there would be pundit jizz everywhere.

    I am cockahoop.

  416. Dex/ yeah I survived, great game and I always thought we could get back in it
Great Heart shown, Theo’s name was chanted, nice to hear, and Ros got a standing ovation- see we can be nice

  417. Its a bit of a shame yet interesting reading through the comments as the game went on. It’s a shame yogi puts dedication and effort to post something fresh and insightful regardless so some of us have pieced of beloved arsenal everyday and some cunts use this blog to wet their pants in anger and dispear about what’s wrong with arsenal. You probably all don’t even feel stupid either for winging through the first half and grinning at full time. Fucking pathetic. And then you expect your team to be dedicated. bunch of fucking turncoats! Spoilt brats! Hats off to little coq n ox. And to stew who was a stalwart through the first half blogging.

  418. Can anyone woh went for the match explain why I could not see the whole team celebrate together after the winner?

  419. @ Aman
“I’m tempted to say we play better when we keep the tempo up.
    We’re a lot more sloppy @ mid-tempo”

No question. Playing at a high tempo is fundamental to making our style effective.

  420. CORR: May “the forgotten” be psyched well enough to contribute when called upon.
(AA, Marouane, Yossi, Park & the injured)

  421. Liverpool v Brighton

Everton v Blackpool or Sheffield Wednesday

    Chelsea v Birmingham

    Crawley Town v Stoke

    Stevenage v Tottenham

    Norwich v Leicester

    Sunderland or Middlesbrough v Arsenal

    Millwall or Southampton v Bolton

Looks like a Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool semi final ;)

But before I get ahead of myself… FANTASTIC game today

PL defences all over must be shaking at the thought of the Ox and TW14. Imagine when Gervinho returns!

    COYG

  422. I am expecting a special February.
    A really positive upswing

    RASERS!

  423. lol Wislhere has a hairline fracture? no trip to Poland for him then.. means we will have a fresh and ready Wilshere back in august…

  424. mattgoonerknight

    Aman

    What does RASERS mean?

    I know it’s probably obvious but I can’t figure it out : s

  425. @ poodle | January 29, 2012 at 6:50 pm

“lol Wislhere has a hairline fracture?”

    Where did you hear that?

  426. Moe

Arent you going to reply to Remonstrate then? :)

  427. MGK

Who cares what it means, just enjoy it dude! That’s what I do!! :)

  428. Bacardi Sagna getting back gives me optimism for the games against Milan and for nipping a CL place. Harry Redknapp getting put in jail adds to this.

  429. that dude on arsenal tv or whatever its called said he had heard it in one of those “btw sentences”
probably something he should never have said….and may not even be true.. but he kinda should know though…..

  430. Fungunner,

`Playing at a high tempo is fundamental to making our style effective` – couldn`t agree more but it`s a confidence thing.

If you have players with pace you need a high tempo to get the best from them.

  431. @ PG
    “I am cockahoop.”

    I LOVE that expression. I’m cock-a-hoop, too.

  432. we needed that

better for us mentally than a 6-0

a fight back to start the fightback..great stuff..

many positives to take..oxo has to be a shoe in for a starting role now..fergie will be kicking himself that he didnt match our offer..what a player

  433. From Tom, a fed up Villa fan, via text: “A shameful collapse. Don’t know what it is at the moment but we seem embarrassed to wear the shirt. And Alan Hutton is a liability.”

Manchester United striker Michael Owen on Twitter: “What a comeback that was. Wenger must have hit the right notes in his HT team talk!”
    ———————————————
    Beautiful.

  434. mattgoonerknight,

    RASER = the impervious, all-supporting, never-say-die, kamikaze, all-bleeding red & white gooner!

  435. I bet ferige had to choose between Jones and oxo and went for Jones cos we were both in for both remember. Besides Oxo wanted us and Jones wanted them.

The real gems always choose us over United, like Ramsey before him OxO and Walcott also did.. muahaha!

  436. JJ

I said at half time this game was massive, noit just so we could still compete for the Cup, but for confidence for all the other games we’ve got. There’s still plenty to play for man.

  437. but honestly, talk about cold fish when it comes to RvP and penalties! Damn! So much preassyre and so elegantly done…. the man is a legend…

  438. he will drop back to the bench for away games and when Gervinho returns.JJ.
    I think

  439. I agree with AW:
    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-yennaris-will-make-a-big-career

Sagna’s going to need a few games to get back to himself methinks.
    So glad Le Coq’s back.
Time for the return of Mstr. Gibbs

  440. Yeah, let’s not get too carried away with young Oxo!

  441. dex
as long as we are still in two cups then everythings to play for..

    george..
    maybe so..
i think when gervinho returns wenger will rotate between the three…

  442. mattgoonerknight

    Aman

    Right, that explains it?????????????? ;)

  443. with sanga, le coq, yennaris and Jenkinson on that side we are capable of sustaining injuries..
On the other side though, its thinner no? Santos and gibbs. who is our left side Yennaris? and our leftside le coq?

  444. george, if Ox keeps this up Gerv’ll have to fight for his place when he returns.
A few goals from Ox & he’s the starting LW

  445. RvP joins Dennis on 120 goals for Arsenal. Joint 10th place.

Oh dear, McLeish trying to stir some shit by claining RvP elbowed Cuellar. I wonder if he will suggest Dunne deserved to be red carded?

  446. mattgoonerknight,
for a more detailed definition meet up with the ACLFers next week
    OR
    just ask Frank.

RASER is a term that was introduced here about 2 years ago
    That’s my take on it…

  447. It was something like Real Arsenal Supporters something something something

  448. i dont think we played badly first half but we didnt defend well and although we created chances we wernt clinical. start of the second half we moved the ball quicker and more positively and yes we had a bit of luck but so did villa dunne should have been sent off twice and the ref decieded to stop booking them second half

  449. Real Arsenal Supporters Encourage Relentless Support.

    Erm….

  450. ..ah, thanks cbob
    Real
    Arsenal
    Supporters
    E….?
    R….?

  451. AorB

Please stop being intelligent man! We were shite in the 1st half, the worst ever performance by a football team anywhere and were jammy/flukey in the 2nd. Well, thats what the meeja will probably say!

  452. Not wishing to tar everyone with the same brush (myself included) but our home support is shit, and nothing short of a disgrace.

To boo at half time when we had played pretty well and were extremely unfortunate to be 2-0 down is lamentable.

Those who booed did not deserve that second half performance.

The whole team were brilliant, but special plaudits to Rosicky and Kos, outstanding.

  453. @ consolsbob | January 29, 2012 at 7:14 pm

“It was something like Real Arsenal Supporters something something something”

Well that’s cleared it up, then!

  454. Fantastic Dex, u RASER u!

  455. Arsenal has always had talismanic captains though. Except for Gallas. Captains that may not have been in the captain mould but that has really really really made a huge difference when it comes to goals assists, defencive organisation etc.
In modern times both Henry, RvP and Cecs were viritually one man teams in addition to be captains…
Cesc did so much last year and the year before, RvP does so much this year and Henry did so much when he was here…..

  456. ..save yer energy Matt,
    we won..who gives a shite?

  457. Spy,

Hope you had fun, I went today too, but I was gone before you asked earlier!

  458. My Arsenal wanderlust took me into the Neo-Clock End Upper today.
No booing at HT. Good support!

  459. Rosicky was also my MOTM. I thought Theo was pretty good esp in the second half, one game we have used his pace to our advantage. The ox, Van P, Lecoq,Ramsey, and the rest also did their part.

I am so used to seeing Kozzer do a fantastic job I am beginning to take it for granted.Bac being back is sweet.let’s hope there wont be any more injuries for our players after our bad luck lately. Good to see the back of January which was a really bad month for us

And may the doomers stay away alittle longer!!!.

  460. poodle..
are u saying if Robin keeps scoring, re-signs and retires a gunner he just might get his own bronze effigy?

  461. After the recent run ‘o games, from 0-2 down to 3-2 up was the perfect result.
I enjoy it when Arsenal defeat the Slurgus spawn.

  462. fabianski looked impressive, especially when dealing with balls into the box

  463. mattgoonerknight

    RASERS

    OTBAG!!!!!!!! :)

    Very happy tonight!!!!

  464. Tremendous result but we shouldn’t get too carried away as there are always downsides with this team.

Although a thoroughly convincing win for the vast majority of us, reports coming out of the Emirates Boo Quarter suggest the Cheer Leaders of Doom have had to rewrite their favourite anti-Wenger chant which has now been amended to:

“You probably don’t know what you are doing…”

  465. lol ArsenalAndrew

  466. Billy’s Boots

Next time, perhaps AW should give the half-time team talk before the match!

Things didn’t look too rosy at half-time, but, as in last week’s match, we started the second half with more aggression, pressing higher up the pitch. Villa could not cope. Towards the end of the first half, it was attack v. defence, but we were not really creating many chances. Villa always looked dangerous on the break. In the second half, we started to win the ball further up the pitch and did a better job moving it forward quickly.

I was disappointed to hear people boo Arshavin when he was announced (as a sub) before the match. There really are some idiots out there.

  467. ive just had an interesting phone call and heres a little something thats hitting the rumour mills

eden hazard is quoted on canal+ that hes made his decision and hes leaving for england..chelsea are the favorites but they are going after willian now from shaktar…mmm

hazard was spotted at the emirates for the utd game and after the result today his twitter account said something like incredible rebound i’ll see you guys on monday…

just thought id throw that in seeing as though we are all in a happy mood :)

  468. you know, i was watching the game at the pub in munich today with a few mates. and behind us were all arsenal haters. one of them was apparently a spud. and only one was a villa fan. so when villa went 2-0 up, they were having a field day.

when we got that equaliser, i stood up, stepped forward, and almost threw a chair, such was the emotions that were building up in me.

you know what? if you don’t believe in your team, if you don’t defend your team, no one else is going to. you think that spud sitting behind me is going to applaud arsenal? fucking no way. i stared those guys behind down after the thing with the chair, and i am 1,6m.

i know we have flaws in our team. but i absolutely believe the team is trying to iron them out.

if you can’t fight for your team, who is going to?

so get in behind the team.

  469. JJ,

would be nice if you can back up wadeva u r saying about hazard. like link to his twitter, and a link saying tt chelsea are faves. thanks.

    @ Conférencier | January 29, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Fabianski did have one or two nice takes, but overall, I didn’t think he was one of our stronger performers today. He frequently put us under pressure through some questionable distribution, and he was nearly caught out a few times through dwelling on the ball when it was passed back to him. Still, we won, which is the main thing, and I’m sure he will benefit from having played. Let’s hope these were just examples of rustiness, rather than something more fundamental.

  471. korihikage
mate believe me if i could i would..
but its hard to ‘back up’ a phone call… :)

  472. i think fabianski is at a stage where he is so scared of making mistakes, he ends up making more. but i thought he realised what was going wrong for him in the first half, and tried to rectify that in the second and improved a bit. which is positive,

but given the position we are in, we have very little room for error. so i don’t know if we actually can afford fabianski time to rebuild his confidence..

  473. @ korihikage

wo kann man in Muenchen die Spiele von Arsenal anschauen?

  474. JJ,

    i realised :)

chelsea actually are favourites? how can that be?

  475. you know, i have seen hazard play in person. i think he is a good player. i watched him in that france-belgium friend at stade de france in november. he definitely is the standout player for belgium, alongside that central midfielder they have with that bomb head.

but i honestly don’t know if he can cut it in england.

but i would rather we sign him than let someone else sign him, even if he may turn out to be a dud. you know, just so he doesnt go somewhere else where he might turn out good.

  476. Ramsey was my man of the match, he really turned it on during our 16 min goal fest.
    Hazard yes please.
After the boos the home support really got into it in the second half – fair dues

  477. SV,

my mates and i usually go to kilians, which is at frauenplatz, by marienplatz.. are you here as well?

  478. they have unlimited resources..??

  479. McCleish, you are already a shoo-in for the Prick Awards, you don’t need to work so hard at it…
    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7464825/

Trying to get RvP, our best player, into trouble. He should be thanking his stars Dunn wasn’t sent off.

  480. JJ,

are you sure city arent in for him then?

  481. “I was disappointed to hear people boo Arshavin when he was announced (as a sub) before the match. There really are some idiots out there.”

I cant convey how steaming mad that makes me.I would send them to “Le guillotine” and then piss down their necks.
Bastards .fucking low life ,shit for brains, bastards.

  482. @ korihikage | January 29, 2012 at 8:02 pm

“but i honestly don’t know if he can cut it in england.”

that’s interestiing. What does he lack, in your opinion? Just generally not quite good enough? Not sufficiently physical?

  483. You sure it’s not Eddie Izzard?

  484. city maybe too

but chelsea are the ones rebuilding and have a million players over the age of 200..

city already have 4 top class players for every position so i can see why ppl are saying chelsea..

  485. Fungunner,

no.. it’s just that you never can say for sure. he definitely needs to adjust to the physical side of the game in england..although there is a difference between physical and downright butchery.

but aside from that, you just never know.. because there are also psychological factors you know? moving to a new country, a new culture etc etc.. you can never say for sure. that’s all i mean.

  486. the arsenal dressing room will feel more like lille than the chelsea dressing room thats for sure..

chelsea have the spending power but weve got the pulling power with AW and TV and gervinho

this kids a top player…wherever he ends up they will be a better team for it…

i wonder if joe coles been telling him to fuck chelsea off?? :)

  487. @ korihikage
Cheers, I get what you mean. I was just wondering if you were referring to something specific.

  488. FunGunner,

nope i wasnt. i would be delighted if he comes. but just not sure what exactly is gonna happen. hell, we don’t even know if certain players are gonna stay. but lets not go there, ok?

    JJ
sure hope joe cole’s telling him to stay away from chelsea.

  489. but then again, all joe cole has got to do is tell hazard about john terry, if hazard’s got a wife or girlfriend,

he’s gonna run far far away.fr chelsea

  490. I don’t think he will before the summer, read some comments by some Lille official. Come to Arsenal? I don’t think we can accommodate him, unless he plays on the wings, which would mean Arshavin or Rosicky being sold off this summers. Could happen, but I think Wilshere and Ramsey will be our long term central midfielders. He will bring something different to both Theo, Gervinhio and the Ox. More of a play maker on the wings, just as Nasri was being played, or Hleb before him.

  491. We are the best in the world! We are the best in the world! We have beaten Villa 3-2 in football!! It is completely unbelievable! We have beaten Villa, Villa, Villa. Birthplace of Balti. We have beaten them all. We have beaten them all. Jibba-Jabba, Acryllic Twat Monkey, Narrow Spectrum, Suga and Shit, Arse NO Brain, SV, Tit McMichaels, Jimmy the Squirrel, Maggie Milk Snatcher.

“Maggie Snatchface can you hear me? Maggie War Criminal with your eyes full of hate, I have a message for you – Meryl Streep would have been preferable to you. I have a message for you: We have knocked Villa out of the football FA Cup. Maggie Belgrano Pinochet , as they say in your language in the bars around the Q Club in Birmingham : Your Villa took a hell of a beating! Your boys took a hell of a beating!”

It’s still not fucking over. Best 45 mins of the year.

    RAAA!

  492. ateeb,

he is a winger who can come into the centre. belgium’s biggest problem was that they had no playmaker in the middle, so hazard basically has to do everything. but i felt that his best position is on the flank, coming into the middle or getting behind the defence..

  493. This is the Hazard story.

    http://www.goal.com/en-india/news/222/transfer-zone/2012/01/30/2873914/breaking-news-eden-hazard-reveals-he-will-move-to-england

He says he’s coming to England but definitely not until next season. The part about Arsenal being on his case is from goal.com not the player.

  494. FG please don’t tease me. ;-)

  495. Anything I say from now on can be discounted. I’m playing loud dance music and dancing. And I don’t care. Life’s too sad not to be happy when it serves you a sensational serving of joy.
    COYG.
    WOOP!
    Its still not over! Etc.Etc.Etc.

  496. McLeish should be quiet because Dunne got even for Cuellar not two minutes later with his own elbow to Van Perise’s bean.

  497. The ref was largely excellent. got a lot of stuff right. HOWEVER the lack of yellow (let alone red) was cowardice or gross incompetence. Glad we won without it.

    Done and Dunne.

  498. Two penalties. Still in shock.

  499. @finsbury
Don’t be. Wednesday in the league you can be sure that we will be denied one. And we won’t get any for the next month, too, just to make up for today!

  500. Imagine what bad eyes you have to have to enjoy the development of le Coq.

I’d rather watch a tree grow from seed than buy a fully grown weed just because it already has it’s prickles.

  501. Billy’s Boots

Just watched the highlights of the Liverpool v Man Utd match yesterday. Was struck by the similarities of the first goal we conceded today and the first goal United conceded yesterday. It is some consolation (albeit small) that we are not the only team to concede in this way.

  502. Nice to know Wenger still has his whip.

  503. i’m convinced we can now go on a run and reel in the spuds and chavs.

  504. fukin el, nothing like a good win to clear the place out.

  505. tis a tad quiet, duke

  506. CONGRATULATIONS ARSENAL & AW.
    GREAT GRITTY WIN.
    NEVER SAY DIE……….
    KOSHER AND ROSIKY MOTM
@ JJ. FROM YOUR MOUTH TO GODS EAR.
. HAZARD. IS AN EXCEPTIONAL PLAYER/ PLAYMAKER.
even though I like Goetz too ,I would be over the moon with Eden. Although I still would like reinforcments at fullbacks.
@DEXTER, turning point is right. SPOT ON.

SO HAPPY with some of the injured coming back. Special. BACARDI BACK @ FULLBACK. HAHA.
what a game between Nedal and the Joker.
    Very impressed.
AND PLZ FFS STOP WITH THE JINXING TALK, GLOOMING TALK, DOUBLE TALK WHILE THE GAME IS GOING ON. BLOODY HELL. HAVE SOME FAITH.
    UP. THE. GUNS. !!!!!!!!!!

  507. Gordon Strachan wot a cunt’
Has he a brain of his own?

  508. Yeah get a win and it’s tumbleweed time

  509. seriously why do our players( theo) always get grief from the coms. that liverpool v utd game not one bloody critique of any player even the hapless downing who is yet to fukin score. unbelievable.

  510. ALEX mactwatlish is a jackass of the highest order. Ffs, VILLA should have played with nine after the 75th min. Hypocrite asshole.

  511. why was Cueller head butting rvps elbow for??

  512. Strachan takes it on himself to tell the public what we(Arsenal fans) think of Theo,
    A complete Wanker

  513. was interesting watching oxo and theo in the same team again..

how scary do we look when its ultimate pace on the flanks…we did in the second half v utd as well…

it was also helping rambo and rosicky..i dont think these two are really that strong in tight spaces like diaby and cesc were…rambo especially is a more of a driver with the ball…he and rosicky were making loads of surging runs in the middle..totally fucking villa up…
we had something like 85% possession at one bit and it wasnt foreplay tippy tap, we were just flogging em with speed and dunne and hutton didnt know what day it was.. lol

the gaps were there for them to run into cos our wide men are turning on the burners and spreading the play..

thought le coq was huge as well…

  514. I enjoyed AW’s clever solution to the problem of how do you bring off AOC without getting booed. Easy, just bring on TH12!

  515. if that was an elbow by robin then hes a fucking ninja..
i wouldnt put it passed him, bergkamp wasnt exactly a saint, but if it was intention hes got jedi powers…
on the slow mo it dont look like hes done all that much wrong really..

    dunne should have gone though..
the slow mo’s make it look worse…he cleaned out rosicky and he wasnt exactley pillow fighting when he took rambo out either…

how the fuck he stayed on the pitch i dont know..

both pen decisions were nailed on as well…best team won…

if robins elbow is the best mcgliesh has got then hes just fucking gutted and hes clutching at straws… cos for 15 minutes we were unplayable

going after em like streaks of lightening..hutton looked fucking dizzy…

  516. “..i didn’t help notice Fabianski contributed quite a bit to the urgency in our game along with TR7. Occasionally dangerous with his quick throw-outs but really kept the game flowing forward.”

Fabianski does not get much credit, but this is one of the things he does really well. Szczesney could learn that from him as there were a few times last week when he missed the chance to make a quick throw out to Chamberlain who was unmarked on the left. He seemed to always look right like he had a blind spot to his left.

LimparAssist | January 29, 2012 at 9:00 pm – Tune! Sounds like I missed a really good game today.

  517. i noticed that as well BB ;)
id love to know what was said in the dressing room at half time as well..
cos whatever got said needs to get said again before the next game…and the game after….and so on..

  518. JJ, yes, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe what AW said (assuming it was him) will be revealed one day in his autobiography! Either that, or one of the players will give a 140-character summary on Twitter. ;)

  519. I just saw some brief highlights. I hadn’t realised that for their second goal, we had both centre-backs pushed up alongside RVP. What were they thinking?!

  520. That would be interesting. We’ll have to wait and see (unless you get another call :) ).

    Right, off to bed!

  521. we got desperate

  522. Interesting snippet from Wenger’s press conference. Wenger wants to send Ryo back on loan, but he can’t send him anywhere outside England because if he does, Ryo won’t count as homegrown anymore. So we might see him at a Premiership or Championship club soon.

  523. We are super lucky. To have this much good depth. In goalkeeper position.

  524. RVP went for his head, but the ball was low enough that it looked like a box out similar to what a player does when receiving the ball and he has an opposing player behind him. Had he gotten his elbow above shoulder height he would’ve been in trouble. Ninja indeed. That packet of cunts deserve it though.

  525. McLeish fury….

Fuck Off McLeish, you freaking whiner…why now Van Persie is not a “Gentle Giant”?

  526. @gainsbourg.
    Right on
    @evil
Too bad. Was hoping to see more of Ryo in the unimportant games. I hope we didn’t just bring park and ryo over for commercial reasons. I just can’t believe. That.

  527. Well, what a game.

I actually thought we played pretty well in the first half. We did not really threaten too often, but looked comfortable and was good in possesion. First goal was just basic defending with Ramsey getting left 2 against 1 from a corner. Should not happen. The 2nd we got caught on the break and it was a well taken goal.

2nd half we were a different team and ripped into them. AOC and Theo were causing havoc on the wings and Rosicky really started pulling the strings in midfield (MotM for me). Le Coq did very well at right back as well I thought.

  528. And was I the only one that hid behind a pillow evertime the ball was at Fabianski’s feet? The guy takes an age to decdide what he is going to do with it. That aside, he did what he had to do well.

  529. The arseblogger has the right if it – Alex McLeish is calling for Robin van Persie to be investigated for an alleged elbow on Carlos Cuellar. You might suggest that’s a bit rich when you consider Richard Dunne managed to get away with an awful challenge on Rosicky and then escape a 2nd yellow when flooring Ramsey for the penalty. Again this is one of those agendas driven by the media and a manager who wants to deflect attention away from the fact his team threw away a two goal lead.
We saw a fantastic game of football yesterday and that the papers this morning are focusing on this issue tells you so much about how the media operates. Sensationalism rules and it’s sad that a comeback from 2-0 down isn’t sensational enough for them. To me it looked fairly innoccuous, and if van Persie is punished after Commander Worf got away with this last week then I think we can feel very hard done by indeed. Also, it ought not to be overlooked that McLeish looks like a withered, sunburnt testicle.

  530. I hope Ryo goes to Bolton
Coyle’s been known to put some useful mileage & confidence on youth

  531. Deise

Arseblog saying McLeish looks like a “withered, sunburnt testicle” is rather apt.

  532. won’t be surprised if rvp gets slapped with a 3match ban now.. the wussies at the fa have something against us. i bet they are livid the ref actually dare give us 2 penalties yest.

though to be honest, if they arent penalties, i really dont know what you must do to get one.

and the cunts behind me were shouting, for the first penalty, that ramsey has lost control of the ball, so no penalty.

what bollocks. it’s the problem we get nowadays when the rules are open to misinterpretation because of precendented cases.

  533. This is poor.
I am going to have to read Arseblog.
Hope I don’t turn into a backstabbing snake in the grass. Its not catching is it?

  534. If skysports decide to run with what the sunburned testicle said then the FA will get involved i have no doubt. The FA are known to bow to media scapegoating

  535. RvP’s “elbow” was nothing. His arm caught him, but both arems were up as he was controlling the ball. Meh.

George – You don’t read Arseblog? That and ACLF are the only 2 blogs I read daily. Both excellent.
