Robin’s Batman To Theo’s Robin

The fixtures are coming thick and fast at the moment although a lull looms with the international break kicking in after the visit of West Brom to The Emirates. It is a headache for Arsène when those encounters will not include a Carling Cup tie, a match where he will automatically rest most, if not all, of the starting line-up from the previous Saturday. Arsenal have traditionally always played on a Tuesday for their midweek fixtures so the scenario is not new or unusual.

For the manager, the question is complicated by one of the more injury-prone players in the past displaying talismanic properties at the moment. van Persie’s absence in previous seasons is made more galling by the form shown now. The term ‘world class‘ is attached to any Johnny Come Lately in this media-defined era; van Persie has hardly burst onto the scene, more of a slow burner.

Like others before him, the Dutchman typifies Arsène’s reputation for buying cheaply and enhancing a player’s value. van Persie’s cost now must surely be a ten-fold increase on his £3m price tag six years ago. To think that he joined Arsenal six months later than originally intended because the club had a cashflow shortage due to the new stadium project.

That price tag was fuelled by ill-discipline, something he has worked hard on at the club latterly successful in this area. The stunning ignorance of those who inhabit the internet was highlighted with claims of a ‘Nazi salute’ at the weekend.

Any semblance of knowledge about the Dutchman’s personal life would have rendered the idea too contradictory to be believed; such is the desire of some to find scandal in any situation, this gained traction to the extent that the player had to issue a denial via his Twitter account. It is the negatives of this information age, where malicious lies and truths told with evil intent permeate via the electronic garden fence.

van Persie is still the subject of speculation over his future, you suspect that as he enters the peak years of his career such tribulations over his future will always continue. Like many, I take the view that even without the pressures that currently beset the club, van Persie should just be paid what he wants. More than his predecessors, I do believe he wants statements of intent from the club. The former captain wanted a flight home whilst his midfield compadre just wanted a bigger salary. No signings could change their minds. The Dutchman you feel – rightly or wrongly – is content at Arsenal, driven  by a winning mentality.

The perception of Arsenal as football club will do nothing to relieve these pressures, especially with Arsène joining those of us who doubt that Uefa’s FFP regulations have either the substance or substantial backing, to make them succeed. There are simply too many get out clauses and as Wenger pointed out, if Sion a small albeit wealthy, Swiss club has the will to fight the governing body through the courts, their bigger cousins will have no compunction in taking the same route.

All of this on a weekend when the soaring emotions of being an Arsenal fan came through. Such is the rollercoaster that at times you can be mistaken for an entrepreneurial Charon, refusing to take an empty boat back to the shores of the Acheron, filling it instead with the souls of disbelieving Arsenal fans ferrying them back to some semblance of belief.

Elsewhere, Theo Walcott is receiving some overdue praise. I have been critical of some performances and his shortcomings, Saturday proved that he has the talent and ability to overcome them. Having made Ashley Cole look distinctly ordinary, the expectations are there that Walcott will play that way every week. Unrealistic perhaps but he can play to some semblance of that level surely? That is not too great a level of expectation.

More than his actual performance, I was impressed by his intelligence. Stained by the ill-informed contempt of Chris Waddle, Theo cannot do right for doing wrong in some eyes. That is harsh; his goal showed an awareness that many never see, playing to the whistle whilst defenders stopped.

He wants to play centrally; it won’t happen in the foreseeable future at Arsenal and to some extent, performances such as the one at Stamford Bridge hold the key. Able to cut in from the wing, he can finish and create. Like van Persie some believe that he should not play centrally as the lead striker, feeding instead off a taller target man. Arsenal are not likely to play that way consistently and with his strength being pace, a wide position seems his immediate future.

As for Gervinho, well, Big Al did as much a job of making his Superman as anyone.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. And i’m superman which is why I’m…

  2. third….

  3. and CL spot..just to be greedy……

  4. good morning all,
listen to our zanny goalkeeper talking on Twitter.

” i don’t know why i stayed on the pitch but what a game.!!
great spirit, great atmosphere and s great win!! but RVP needs to start scoring some goals.! ”
I’m liking this kid more and more everyday…

    Up the GUNS!!!!

  5. Great post Yogi. Amused by the Nazi claim. A Nazi married to a Semite is a new one! Being in the media in a competitive environment is crazy. This is the case of the media creating and not reporting the news. Up the guns!

  6. I think it was more an ‘Ave’. A conquering Roman general saluting his people.

  7. Strikes me it was more of somebody wanting to either engulf all footballers of a certain status into the current malevolent atmosphere or one of Terry’s ‘mates’ seeking to deflect attention.

  8. I meant the gesture Yogi, you mischievious old wotsit!

  9. To return to the terra cotta (as my Gran would say), when two sides play such a high-line in defence, an open, exciting game is bound to emerge.
What will be interesting now is to see Arsenal’s new confidence against the dour defence of West Brom next weekend.

  10. Great win on Saturday, torture watching it though. I doubt Theo’s performance will be enough to shut up the idiot who sits behind me at Highbury tomorrow, but I can only hope!

  11. I should imagine, Block 4, that you might be able to ignore your friend if you leave him at Highbury and you take a short trip to The Emirates…

  12. As Big Al pointed out last Friday, if you prepare for Theo then Gervinho will punish you. And vice-versa! van Persie’s current blistering form has been attributed to anything and everything, but let’s give credit where it is due and reconize what is actually responsible, as he has done himself. The two lads on either side of him.

Also Song + Arteta = Awesomeness. That is all.

  13. I always knew Jay-Z was a Nazi. *Dirt off ya Shoulder* was an obvious plea to the zombie Fuhrer himself. The desperate cries of a man overwhelmed by those he hates, and utter powerless to do anything about it. We must have sympathy for these racists, for the inferiority complex they harbor is unparalleled

  14. So RVP is a Nazi now eh? Are the same people who defend Terry propagating this shite about RVP in the media?

  15. Not happy with whipping up a racist storm or tapping the mobile phones of childrens parents who have had their kids lives ended by evil men, there is NO level these scum under a media banner will stoop to.

I spent all weekend listening to fellow Gooners who were living in the media bias world of Arsenal finally wake up and admit that they have been taken for mugs and that they have been paying for it too.

But, strange as it sounds Yogi, we have a lot to thank the media for because I think it has had an positive effect on our players. I’m not saying that Persie and the boys buy a copy of the so called newspapers every morning but, I’m sure they hear some way or another the shit that get’s printed about them.

I know it was only one game and there are very serious defensive issues that need addressing but, I truly believe that this team has found their balance and we can now see what Wenger, was waiting for.

The media are very angry with Wenger, and Arsenal. They know that there is no better than Arsenal on their day and no matter what they say on radio or print in the paper or sit round a table on Sunday morning chatting **** and enjoying their one way criticising show, they know what we can do.

Cesc, left to go home and Nas, left for more money we were supposed to be done for and a top ten side at best and everything was going according to their plans but, they can never outsmart Wenger. They totally forgot about Aaron Ramsey, and that reverse (or whatever you call it) pass to Gervinho, is something that falls into the world class bracket and I haven’t seen those sort of passes since Zidane in his wonder years. It was so close to Lampard feet he could of just stuck his toe out but, by the time he thought of doing it the ball was in the back of his net. That really made the media sick and their vomiting doesn’t end there.

They continually speak about “no replacement for Nas”. But, hold on! Who’s this Gervinho guy who likes nothing better than to spend his afternoons skinning players inside out and getting to the byline. Gervinho, IS Nasri’s replacement and he loves playing for Arsenal and is feared already.

Our team has devastating pace matched with quality players in every position and we didn’t go into debt getting these players in or buy the crap they wanted us to i.e. Parker, Barton and the rest. Thank god we have a manager who’s intelligence is at a higher level than any of them could possibly imagine.

  16. Yogi’s Warrior | October 31, 2011 at 10:50 am

    I miss the Clock End.

    Just thought I’d share that.

  17. I don’t think there’s a fan left who still thinks getting shot of Nasri was a bad thing.

  18. Yogi at 10:50. Very funny. I had a laugh!

  19. Just Chelsea fans hoping he would join their team and Spuds out to slander an Arsenal tormentor.

  20. Excellent post Yogi. Best we ignore those trying to take issues with RVP’s salute, a sad lot they are. The Chelsea game was just 3 points in the kitty. Great as it was. We now have to move on as bigger challenges and even greater conquests beckon. The world of football is a fickle one with even more fickle fans and pundits. Same folks who said we would get relegated a few weeks ago are now suggesting the title may not be out of our reach.
The lads need to keep their feet solid on the ground and approach every game with the same determination shown at the bridge on Saturday.

  21. YW, great post full of the usual insight and droll humour.

  22. Markus, you should feel sorry for Nasri. At Arsenal he felt overshadowed by a Spaniard called Fabregas. Only to move over to Money city and be overshadowed by another Spaniard called Silva. I don’t think he’ll be taking an Iberian holiday anytime soon!

  23. Block 4,

Maybe he isn’t really there sitting behind. You know like matey off of Quantum Leap?

Try slapping his face or something and if you hand goes through him then you know he’s not really there.

    Oh boy.

  24. No Kenyan, I wouldn’t even reserve pity for Nasri. I do feel some sympathy for Clichy. He genuinely thought it would be a good career move, but he looks like he’ll spend much of his time of the bench. Kolo too looks to be out of favour. Shame. Both of them put in their time with us.

  25. Well pity our brothers from the dark side at Le Grove. A very subdued post from those two jokers today. They don’t want to admit that they were wrong all along.

  26. The movement of this team vs previous years and the speed with which we get the ball forward or move the ball is devastating. Loving the fluidity.

Chesney needs to curb those crazy tendencies but over all we look like we mean business and have a ruthless streak, we look far less naive and far less like we ‘need a plan b’, plan a is now just batter the opposition into submission with pace, guile and clinical finishing, finally I’m really believing in the mental strength that we have always been told about.

The front 3 must be terrifying for most defenders, the middle 3 have a great workrate, balance and look like they have been player together for a while.

We do need to make sure we pick up late runs into our box but we don’t look like a nervous wreck at the back anymore.

  27. Not being negative but, there is a issue regarding defence that needs addressing. I know we have to give certain players time to bed in etc but, surely we should still see a new player do the basics no matter what league he has come from?

Andre Santos, isn’t as fit as he would like but, he’s working on that and I have to say that I totally depend on him to make that tackle when faced squared on so he has something to work on.

Per Merts, has had a roll to play regarding a handful of goals that we have conceded so far. Getting in the wrong position for lampards goal and then getting shoved out the way by terry for the second. It was so poor and considering the size of the guy makes it worst watching it.

It’s very basic stuff marking or getting in the face of the most potent aerial threat in attack and for some reason Pers, was nowhere near them when there wasn’t any excuse not to be.

How long do we keep going with this?

  28. I know this is what fans do, but can we slow it down on the gloating and self-congratulation. Not for any other reason than the chance that it might jinx us?
I mean, how many times in the past have we celebrated being on the cusp of greatness only to have it ripped from us by bad luck, injuries, poor unexplainable performance, etc.

And before someone jumps one my back, I’m not saying we shouldn’t celebrate our impressive run of form. A little perspective is all I’m calling for. We still have quite some work to do, and are yet to face many, many other tests.

  29. @Henristic
I agree that beating Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge is not lifting the CL trophy, but I feel that this outpouring of joy is just a sign how badly we fans — and the players — needed a result after that. Tomorrow we are playing another game and after that references to the drubbing we gave Chelsea in their own backyard will become part of Arsenal history and everyone will have a bit more perspective.
But until Marseille is on, I just can’t get enough of seeing Terry fall flat on his face.

  30. My last post wasn’t aimed at anyone in particular. There hasn’t been any OTT celebrations on here that I can recall. If I’m honest its directed more at myself.

Every so often, I catch myself thinking we really can do something special this year. Problem is, I thought the same last year, and pretty much every year since 2006. Just last night, I dreamed of RvP hoisting the PL trophy with a sad looking Cesc watching from some corner somewhere in the background. Crazy eh?

  31. @Yogi’s Warrior | October 31, 2011 at 10:50 am

    Old habits die hard!

  32. Those guys at le grove must be the equivalent of the Orcs in Lord of the rings. There’s so much bile and foul talk on that blog it’s mind numbing.

  33. Henristic – thats called being a fan – your heart will of occasion over rule your head and just go with the flow of joy after a game like we just witnessed

    Go on the gooners… :)

  34. Durham, is with the rest if them and the rest of them are against us.

That celebration was for us and the themselves after taking so much crap from the media and some of their own they wanted to share the joy and let the none believers realise because it’s in print it doesn’t mean it’s true.

  35. Goonerton,

    I want some!!!

  36. ivanputthepricesup

I agree Goonerton Per Merts finds it hard to even get off the ground at times reminds me of Senderos who suffered with the same problem.
The one thing you don’t need is a giant centre back being beaten in the air.
He is struggling to cope i feel and you would think if he doesn’t improve soon a partnership of Verm and Kos might well be the better option.
Good to see Theo coming to the fore again, but we have seen him have his moments in the past and then follow it with not very much, lets hope this will get his confidence up and for him to start to show what a good player he can be.

  37. Yogi, I’m far from hating on Theo but lets understand that his performance was also down to the high line Chelsea played. If you looked at the so called lesser teams in the EPL you see them employ a deep line thus limiting the explosive potential of Theo the fact that Chelsea did not use this system was clearly a point of frustration to their fans. I absolutely enjoyed the game not just the win but rather the fact two teams went out to play attacking football :) of course I also know that to do so against Arsenal makes our chances of winning that much better :)

I think it is poor for McNulty (BBC) to talk about the slowness of Per and yet fail to point out the obvious limitations of one John Terry.

  38. Well, my view YW is that whilst the attack had a few bright spots to talk about, and the defence a little less so due to some jittery stuff earlier on, Ramsey had the best game of his career … that I’ve seen; and in hindsight it was acoming. I am intrigued by this young man. He seems to combine unusual skills: dogged in defence, Flamini-like in his running, but instinctively an attacking player with clever movement and passing, an excellent eye for the shot, and a couple of exquisite ball control skills. And he is what, 20? 21?

The win was set up by midfield dominance in the second half, and an all round display from Santos, recovering well from weaknesses in his first half. I suppose one must highlight the CBs too and their second half, and of course RvP and Theo, but I imagine they did what we expect.

It was always silly to doubt Theo’s basic tenacity and skill, those excellent early crosses, running inside he found space and gave Cole a difficult time, and RvP had something like a hat trick in him,and when the spaces opened up he delivered. All in all, not unexpected.

Ramsey I relish. I hate to compare, I am not the comparing type, the players are so different, but Ramsey is becoming our main creative pivot, and Arteta is the perfect foil, for now. What distinguishes Ramsey from a few other midfielders, past and maybe even present, is his defensive work and running off the ball. He works. This means, the obvious skill aside, he has the team in his spirit.

  39. I thought at times on Saturday we looked very Arselona going forward. I have been impressed with Kos and it is now obvious that Kos & TV5 are the men to hold the middle of the defense.

  40. ‘Calm and experience’. Wengers answer to RVP’s purple patch

  41. Miami “I think it is poor for McNulty (BBC) to talk about the slowness of Per and yet fail to point out the obvious limitations of one John Terry.”

Exactly what I was thinking Miami.

  42. ivanputthepricesup,

It is huge concern for me because if Per, put himself about a bit who would terrify attackers and I believe this applies to Squillachi also. We just can’t take these sort of risks because it spreads through the team. I can’t count how many times last season the look of deflation of the faces of our players when they tries so hard only to see the hard work undone by very bad defending.

We don’t want to go down that road again but, it has to be the players because I can’t believe Wenger got him and Squillachi knowing they lose concentration at vital moments.

  43. Hey McNulty (BBC) – dont mention ze war!!

  44. Oh yes and if Theo can play at even 70% of the level he showed on Saturday, for the rest of the season it would great. But, I have seen this pattern before where he plays well then starts the media merry go round with little comments here and there.

Why not take a different approach and try keeping one’s boat shut until further notice?

  45. I’m always interested in what the table has to offer. It was an interesting result for us, because everyone above us (Newcastle to come, and a tricky one at Stoke) won except Chelsea, but we and Chelsea had the most difficult outting and that will tell. The bottom line for now, not far into the season, is that positions 3 to 7 (us) are now separated by just one game, 3 points. Spuds should comfortably move into 3rd, thanks to our win, and with games in hand should widen the margin with us to 6+ points. As its so early in the season, just 2 months and some weeks, getting into 4th spot is hard but achievable this calendar year.

Consistency will tell. It seems to be a very tight race for second to 4th now, an exciting one, every team fallible, except City so far and Spuds showing early form.

We have a couple of plus’s though which should tell in some results with the return of Vermaelen, so CBs can rotate, and i think it will be that and “form” that dictates selection, Jenks, and I would hope Diaby soon to come, and a bit of impetus from that direction in midfield.

  46. Just reading the live text on BBC for van Persie’s second goal. It totally gives no mention of how the goal was scored other than how van Persie finished it. In fact it doesn’t even mention the build up, who provided the assist (Malouda?) or the fact that John Terry fell on his arse like a big spanner trying to play the high line.

    82:50 : Foul by Tomas Rosicky…

84:19 GOAL – Robin van Persie:
Chelsea 3 – 4 Arsenal Robin van Persie scores a goal from inside the area to the bottom left corner of the goal.

87:11 : Aaron Ramsey concedes a free kick for a foul on Raul Meireles.

…Yep, that’s how it happened all right.

  47. Frankly goonerton, you’re criticism of Theo is getting pathetic at this stage.

  48. How very fickle the Arsenal fans, about Theo, about Per! Theo has done little actually wrong this season, and a lot right, especially his defensive work, which generally is going unnoticed, and some excellent accurate crosses are going in quite consistently. Per has similarly done little wrong and a lot right. He was out of position for Lampard’s header because Kos was out of position, and he was occupying the space; so Lampard got between him and Djourou. The Terry goal was nothing to panic about, Terry got a foot ahead of Per and bundled it in; he might have got himself goalside of Terry, or not. It was 50/50. I was more worried about the early jitters, that didn’t produce goals, luckily.

  49. Markus, it is part of the problem in the media that there perception is that RvP does it all on his own… if you look at the goals they are team goals, especially the first which was pure class and the fact RvP was on the end of it was great but the team made that goal and RvP merely finished it.

On finishing, I think the team could learn alot from the composure that RvP has been demonstrating.

I for one still see Theo moving in to the central role within a couple of years if he remains at Arsenal.

  50. Fans who think there is a great gap of some sort between our top choice 3 central defenders have got it wrong. Somewhat different styles, a few different strengths, and TV5 prefers the left sided position and is arguably long term the first choice, but on the whole not much in it. Per is a calmest, and gets his positioning dead right 90% of the time. Therefore, the manager will probably rotate on some personal system of choice or other. It’s a great strength.

  51. @ Goonerton

I guess your comments re Per were intended in the spirit of constructive criticism (weren’t they?), but the ‘How long do we keep going with this?’ line was harsh. Do we ask the same question of Gervinho and RVP for missing easy chances in the first few minutes? While there is plenty of room for improvement in our defence, we should recognise that we have already made significant progress in this area. Let’s not go looking for a scapegoat.

    @ ZimPaul

Good comments re Per and Theo.

  52. Zimpaul – I agree fully, lay off Theo. I think after our run of good results it would be only fair to give the lad some compliments without feeling the need to constantly remind us that you still do not rate the lad. To say that the only reason he played well was because the Chavs played a high line is to dismiss the fact that at the same time you ream our defenders when we play a high line, saying that they are not good enough blah blah blah. How can our defenders not be good enough yet at the same time it is simply Theos pace that has him playing so well against Cole. Ashley Cole whether you like it or not is one hell of a left back and Theo ran him ragged. Whoever posted this idiotic criticism also ignores how Theo scored his goal. He did not simply kick it past Cole and run after it. If you are going to criticize a player at least be consistent, otherwise you look like and sound like a fool.

  53. DeiseGooner | October 31, 2011 at 11:54 am

    So true.

Meanwhile, enjoy Kos doing his thing…

  54. The Clock End is alive and well and fast becoming the liveliest part of the Arsenal Stadium.

  55. Good that the gap is indeed closing… we will get right in the top mix…. there is no stopping us

  56. Did anyone notice that play by Kos at 2.37 or so in the video I just posted, where he counter-intuitively clears the ball for a throwin with his heel, whilst on the slide? Talk about style eh? My kind of player.

  57. Glorious as always YW.

I thought Per was signed as TV’s partner, but with the three first choice CB’s, we have options against different attacks.

Certainly, if it was Drogba on the field on Saturday, not Torres, then perhaps Mert would have been recieving all the plaudits.

  58. Heuristic – Awesome video on Kos. Thank you. I liked the sliding back heel to save it going ut for the corner, instead he back heels off a Chavez and we get the throw. Brilliant!! I also liked the tussle with Torres after which, when he wins the ball, he then kicks it at his head and it goes out for an Arsenal throw. I do not think he meant to hit him but it was still funny as shit :)

  59. @ZimPaul

    Totally agree on Ramsey.

I’m so glad to see his season is settling down and he is showing his qualities, including his ability to make a cracking pass.

I was worried that he was been asked to step into some fairly big boots too early at the start of the season and that he was getting into a bit of a sink or swim situation. Wow, hasn’t he turned it around.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow night and its a relief that we can look forward to our injured players returning at some point to add to the quality on the pitch rather than have to save our season.

  60. “pedantic george | October 29, 2011 at 11:17 pm
670 posts today and hardly a doomer in sight.
I hope Luke is ok he was in a Chav pub .

Luke see how far we have come?

Per has been an excellent addition and is good foil for Kos.
Goonerton should be ignored,Just last week he was condemning Theo and wanting Ox to play in his stead. And imagine if he had played like he did on Tuesday against Cashley? But I don’t want to gloat further.

    Team for tomorrow anyone?

  61. I quite liked Kos “accidently” kicking the ball to Torres’ head.

  62. Markus | October 31, 2011 at 12:41 pm

Critic of Theo lately because he wasn’t half of what he was on Saturday. It’s not like I made it up because it’s Theo mate. I also stated before the game that this was he moment because he tends to find form on the big stage which can’t be said for some of these so called world stars.

So, I don’t really know what your chatting about but, as long as you do then it’s all gravy.

  63. Pretty self-explanatory

  64. Great work from the midfield three. Really good. All three of RVP, Theo and Gervinho came to the party. Koscielny excellent. Djourou will never be a full back.

  65. pedantic george | October 31, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Get right foliaceous one. I said that if he continues to off form he should be made to watch AOC in his place for little while which tends to being out the best in the player who’s been replaced but, you have never heard or seen that from you couch have you?

Just the other day you were saying that we don’t need Gervinho, or any replacements at the back before we brought anybody. You can choose to forget though.

You just know how things look from your sofa and nothing else so direct your post who gives a fuck and take your own advise and ignore me.

  66. Markus | October 31, 2011 at 2:21 pm

It is isn’t it. Feel better now?

  67. Kos is pure class.

  68. For Marseille I think a few changes would do no harm. Maybe Arshavin, Rosicky and Park coming in. Maybe even Jenkinson. Santos may be in need of a rest too? 2 games in 3 days might begin to tell on him. Vermaelen at left-back if Gibbs isn’t ready?

Be interested to see whether the Arteta/Song partnership gets a break.

  69. Goonerton.you seem to have allowed some other people to see what a dimwit you are.
    Its not just me.

  70. The fact Waddle had the nerve to suggest Theo doesn’t have a football brain still rankles me… Pot, kettle, black….

After all – Where was Waddle’s football brain when he smashed his penalty into orbit in the WC in 1990?? At least hit the target you mulleted twat.

I will never forgive him for that, and diamond lights, and he played for Spurs….

In fact, is there a bigger c**t pundit at the moment?

  71. Also – As Evil (I think) said, you can’t help but spend a day or 2 enjoying a result like that.

Yes, there is rooom for improvement defensively (Arteta stay on your post man!), but going forward we were a joy to watch.

Rambo, Theo, Gervinho and RVP were awesome, and backed up nicely by Song and Mikel.

We are looking stronger by the game, with the prodigal son still to return so things are looking up.

A win tomorrow to get qualification from a tough group done nice and early will be a nice next step!

  72. Szcz
    Carl ,TV-Kos-Santos
    Bennthegoon-Rosicky-Arteta
    Gervinho-Park-Arshavin

  73. Diaby was supposed to be back a week ago, so he might pop up tomorrow night.

  74. @ Miami Arsenal
“Yogi, I’m far from hating on Theo but lets understand that his performance was also down to the high line Chelsea played.”

good analysis of Theo’s general game….but his goal v. Chelsea had nothing to do with Chelsea’s high line……..just the size of Theo’s heart.

Maybe some of you can help me out,

I believe a few years ago in a Champion’s league match…..Theo made a thundering run up the middle of the pitch (must have been 70 mtrs) and our opponent on at least 2 separate occasions tried to take him down…..and the kid just wouldn’t submit to either tackle…….but I can’t recall how the play ended….

  75. With Diaby, Sagna TommyV and Jack are back we are a match for anyone.Including the Cuntalands

  76. Arsesession, was that against Liverpool? Ran the whole pitch shrugging off deliberate attempted fouls and set up a goal on the counter-attack. We lost the match but I’ll always rememebr that goal.

George, I keep forgetting about Benayoun! Should definitely make the bench at least.

  77. @ Arsesession… mate I agree the goal was a great finish, though I would guess Cech is sick at himself for letting in 2 goals at the near post… as a former keeper I know it is usually poor positioning. That said, Theo had a great game and he’ll continue to excel where teams give him so much space. I have enjoyed his defensive work this year which cannot be under stated, but in games where the opposition are playing a deep defensive line he needs to ctreate a little more going forward. I stand by what I have said for an age, the lad needs to be given a run in a central role, though again under the current formation it is not going to happen.

I tell you what, if he had missed that goal Rambo would have cuffed the lad… Rambo was so open for a pass from Theo to score :)

  78. It does not matter how well positioned the keeper is .A mid too close range shot will beat him near post if it is struck well enough.Reaction times are fixed and if the ball is past then that is that.
Like Big Al with Ngog at Liverpool.

  79. I still can’t believe blogs elsewhere are still crowing on about attracting/signing the exceptional quality that is Cahill… Since when did he prove himself to be in the worlds elite..

Anyway, historically we’ve heard from the cronies on MOTD that defenders hate 2 things, pace and movement, add to that intelligence and direct, clinical play and I guess you have a defenders nightmare. Sure we still have things to tweak but we have a lot to be positive about and now, not least a mental advantage when it comes to team’s going into a game against us.

  80. Pedantic George – For tomorrow I would like to see Theo and RVP rested. Park and Chamakh and AOC should be good enough in attack, maybe AA should start ahead of AOC?

    Fabianski
    Jerks
    Merton
    TV
    Santos
    Song
    Rosicky
    Benayoun
    AOC/AA
    Park
    Chamakh

    Subs:
    Szezsney
    Squillachi
    Miguel
    Frimpong
    Yennaris
    AOC/AA
    Theo
    RVP

  81. Chamakh is injured Irish….

That run was against ‘Pool George, I was in the away end at Anfield that day, that was a magical moment…

Unfortunately we gave away a pen about 2 mins later!!!

  82. Arteta came to play CL football Irish.I think he is a shoe in
Arshavin must start ahead of anyone :) Have I ever said I think Andrei should play in the middle and be relieved of all defensive duties?

  83. Well then remov Chamakh and play both AOC and AA.

  84. Irish, I can’t believe you’re talking about resting players for tomorrow’s game! We should have learnt our lesson from last season about taking teams too easily, the mighty Braga and Shakhtar meant we faced Barcelona in the second round rather than a much easier team (basically anyone else). As long as anyone isn’t totally knackered then we should play our strongest 11.

And the moral of this story is: Learn your lessons!

  85. Matt ,What are you telling me that for.I knew,it was Arsesession with the memory loss. And was it Big Phil who gave away the pen?

  86. Good morning/Afternoon folks!

Well for me Djourou was on point apart from early.

Before people talk negatively about the kid, it would be good to note that his cutting in has started of good attacks and have lead to some goals.

Miami, get outta here with taking anything away from Theo bro. He was class and is class. Done!
Read what Wenger said, he (Walcott) has been asked to be more defensive and he has been great so far.
I say again, for people who have been riding the lad, he is the person who scored two goals against Udinese to get us into the CL and they were two brilliant goals.

    That’s my boy!

    God bless!!!

  87. PG – I don’t recall you ever saying that about AA. Sorry completely forgot about Arteta DOH! I would start him ahead of Benny.

Block4 – Last year we rested almost all of our first tam players whereas I would like to see a team with arguably almost all first teamers but with Theo and RVP rested but on the bench. If we lack finishing then we can bring them on but at some point we will need to rely on other strikers outside RVP, why not now hen we have the luxury rather then wait for it to be a necessity? As good as Park was last time he played, we need to know if he can cut it in the EPL. I personally think he can but with theJanuary transfer window creeping up on us we need to find out soon.

  88. While I do agree that we should play to get to the top of the group, the moral of the story as far as playing Barca early last season was that the ref was corrupt. That was the biggest problem right there, not when we played them.

We will have to rest players at some time. I am with resting RVP and giving Park a go. We can put RVP on at the end, if we need to.

If we don’t rest players we will suffer for it in the long run

  89. Jenks

    on Ju Young Park…
“He’s absolutely clinical in front of goal. If you put him there he’ll finish all day long. What more can I say? That’s what all strikers are there to do, and he’s brilliant at that. He showed the other night what he can do and I’m sure he’ll continue to do that.”

  90. I agree Paul.Park to play and RVP to ride in on his big orange charger if needed

  91. Paul-N
So you don’t think it would have made a difference if we finished top of the group last season. Surely then we would have avoided said corrupt ref at that stage of the competition, and who knows what would have happened from there.

If you really thought the ref was corrupt, what possible lesson is there to learn, except perhaps to do all we could to avoid playing Barca?

  92. I have to respectfully disagree Paul-N and Irishgray, yes we need more goals from the other strikers in the squad, but making the same mistakes as last year would be madness and I don’t think the manager will do that. If we win tomorrow we’ll need one more win to top the group, the last group game is when players should be rested. Of course, hopefully we’ll be five up at half time which would be the signal for the captain to put his feet up!

  93. Sorry George, was trying to read all the comments to catch up at once.

I think it was Kolo who gave the pen away that day.

  94. I do agree that we should rest RvP for Park, especially since we’re playing at home. Aside from that, we should field the strongest team possible.

  95. Marcus and Matt…..thanks.

Miami……..(imo) I don’t see how Cech can be faulted. Okay, maybe he was a hair (not much more) to the right….but from the replay’s: there was only a ball’s width of space and Theo pummeled the ball into that sliver of space.

Agree with you about Cech’s general performance…….he didn’t really make any saves did he?
We were 5 goals on our 5 shots on target. (or something like that)

  96. I don’t see how Cech could have saved any of those goals.
Chelsea are a top team and they played well.
    We were just better .Simples.

  97. I was on a zombie walk in Bristol on Saturday and didn’t find out about the result until late on in the day. A massive 6 foot 5 zombie covered in blood was delighted to tell me the result, and straight away i was out of character, going from groans and cries for more brains, to whoop whooping, punching the air in excitement. A great day out celebrated by a great night out, scaring the shit out of the various humans who hadn’t embraced the day.

What a match! We are definitely on the up, and with the goalscoring ability that was on show, the defences we come up against now will be going into the matches with that little bit of doubt, that little bit of fear that could give them the hesitation, ‘caught in 2 minds’ moments that will win us games. This is exactly what we needed to kick on and do something special this year – against all odds.

    Lovely stuff. COYG!!

    Thanks Yogi.

  98. I doubt Wenger will take our foot off the pedal tomorrow; a win and we are are thereabouts to finish top with 2 matches to go. Probably need one more draw or something. But some changes that reflect rotation perhaps. I would certainly give Kos or Per a rest for TV5, who needs game time anyway, and Jenks a game, ditto. Rosicky for Ramsey, or Arteta, who may need a rest. Arshavin for 3Gs or Theo, sure. Benayoun might play for Theo, that could work. If fully fit, it is possible Diaby may play for Song, not a bad move at home, but probably not, too early. I think RvP will play – when players hit form it’s usually best they play, but not to wrack and ruin; and then come off maybe for Park, but who knows maybe Wenger thinks Park could be ready for this. Personally I would make 5 changes & keep Chewie, RvP, Song, Arteta, Kos and obviously Santos for this leg, and try and sort it out now.
    Chewie
    Jenks Kos TV Santos
    Song
    Arteta Rosicky
    Ben RvP AA

  99. Geo, I was also one happy-arsed Zombie on Saturday night. Very out of character.

  100. Didn’t our manager (on Friday or Sat) describe the next two matches as cup finals (Chelsea and Marseille)?

Regardless of our outcome with Chelsea, he considers winning against Marseille critical.

Keep our foot on the accelerator and maintain our current form…….play a very strong line up.

  101. Henristic, I am all for topping the group and getting the easiest possible route, avoiding a corrupt ref never crossed my mind at that point. I guess we can now add that to the list of reasons why we should top the group.

  102. Zimpaul…
did not read your post until after I posted……too strange….but then again I rarely can find fault in your logic.

  103. Haha Markus, were you in brizzle? Was a great laugh, thought it was going to kick off towards the end when the police vans were surrounded by brain-hungry zombies, but fortunately it remained in good spirit, maybe ironically..!

I would be tempted to rest a couple of players tomorrow, particularly RvP. We cannot afford for him to get injured at the moment, and if we have a good chance of winning without him, rest him. Park is clinical and I can’t see why he couldn’t do it against Marseille. I am confident of a win tomorrow, whoever plays. Rotation is needed, so why not start tomorrow?

  104. We shouldn’t think of rotating our team as taking our foot of the gas. If our players are good, we should trust them.

  105. Geo, there was also a Zombie walk out of Stamford Bridge by about 30,000 wearing blue tops just after our 5th goal hit the back of the net on Saturday lunchtime!

  106. Geo, nice to hear about the zombie walk. The wife and I attended the Miami Beach event and she is all the way in to make up and special effects :) Today is officially halloween and she is attired in her 2 month Gears of War 3 creation.

PG, regardless of how well a ball is struck all keepers well tell you that to be beaten at the near post is a sin! I really couldn’t care less about whether you agree or not. I am taking nothing away from the strikes, both of which were excellent, but I guarantee Cech is pissed he got beaten at the near post.

  107. Did anyone else think Rosicky was very good when he came on?

  108. As has been stated, we changed a bit too much in last years CL as we did with the other cup matches. 2-3 changes at the most to keep the squad fresh.

  109. Yes Paul N – Confidence in them breeds confidence in themselves.

  110. Ok Miami we will ignore reaction times then . Apparently they don’t apply to keepers.
At least I have learned something new.

  111. Hahahaha Matt! Nice one.

I like the sound of that Miami! A dedicated zombie! :) My costume was far less intricate, comprised of a pixie hoodie, loads of blood and some white UV contacts… It wasn’t until people got close that they noticed the eyes, then it gave them a little shock. The UV when we got to the bar later looked really cool though!

  112. Off to watch the game again, have a good one all :)

  113. Block4 – I fully agree in not taking our foot off the accelerator as Arsesession says but I see RVP as absolutely vital to our league form above all else, especially considering the teams that we will be playing in the next couple of games. Of our next 5 PL games I see away at Norwich being the trickiest, we then have Man City. If we win those 5 games we will be well placed to beat City but we need RVP for that game above any other player. We have an a break coming up and hopefully he can rest up then as Holland are through to the Euros so no real need play him. I would much rather Park started and RVP was made available on the bench but only if needed.

  114. Definitely Geo, after all Zombies are people to

  115. By the way, congrats to RvP for taking over top spot in leading scorer to date, 10 in 10. I see only Blackburn and Bolton have conceded more than us, and only the top 3 have scored more (City 36!, ManU 26, Chelsea 23, Arsenal 20) and ManU not that many considering they got that 8 goal “advantage”. Oh, Arsenal! I have patiently analysed all the goals, and can confirm our goals were much better, worth one and half.

  116. Terry’s excuse “But, but … as you may know I am just a zombie, and zombies are people too”. RvP “Take that zombie, byeeee, see ya!”

  117. has frimpong coloured his hair pink yet? If he puts on Nics pink boots too now, he would be all pink :)

  118. What about Rosicky ?
I am getting sick of people ignoring me :(

  119. I agree about Rosicky George, he played well.

  120. Did you say something George??

  121. PhilippeAuclair Philippe Auclair
    by goonerdesi
Diaby – another three weeks out; left calf. When will this end?

    Oh fuck a duck

  122. What is George saying now? Is George dying his hair pink?

  123. ok i got one question, why would Hazard in his wildest dreams every concider Liverpool a potential club to move to?? they have not been top 4 for ages, have not won shit for ages, have not been in the CL for ages and have a shit striker named Carroll!

  124. Stop laughing at me and ignoring me.I am an intellectual colossus and demand to be taken seriously.
I once outwitted goonerton and gonner2 both on the same day.I am not a man to be trifled with.Have a care you ragamuffins.

  125. Poodle,he wouldn’t.why do you ask?

  126. Poodle – As over rated as Carrol is, they also have Suarez who for me is the new Tevez. Except I think he is better and not the whiney little whore Tevez is.

PG – Is Diaby really fucking injured again!!? If he is he must go. I like him and I think he could be another Viera but if you are not in, you can’t win. So he has to go.

  127. I’d go for

    Ches

    jenks kos/mert verm gibbs

    benny coq art ros/gerv

    AA
    Park

  128. Intellectual colossus, huh George? Are you AW in disguise then? No!? Silly little monkey!! Silly little monkey with pink hair and pink booths!!

  129. Time to go shoot some pool and knock back a few beers :) Later peeps!! COYG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  130. Great weekend to be a gunner! So proud of our boys. There we negatives as well as the obvious positives but to mention them after such a great win seems unnecessarily negative.

I hope, I pray , after last year we dont make the same mistake in the CL , we need to play our strongest team till we HAVE qualified,

Paul N , While I do agree that we should play to get to the top of the group, the moral of the story as far as playing Barca early last season was that the ref was corrupt. That was the biggest problem right there, not when we played them.

Seriously man, is that really your line of thinking? Sure the ref was a fucking disgrace, but if we had not put ourselves in the position to be up against the best and most loved ( by the refs and establishment ) Team on the planet it would have made the world of defferance. We nearly beat them, we would have probably beaten any one else we coud have faced.

Stop blaming the refs for everything man.

  131. Captain RVP……………Click Click Click
    Captain RVP……………Click Click Click
    Captain RVP……………Click Click Click

  132. Stop blaming the refs for everything man.
Yes Paul when you could blame Arsene and the Board instead. What is wrong with you man?

  133. @ Gunnerjones

but we would have still met them at the semis a s our group topper did, would it have been okay to cheat for them then? we played them well and would have gone through at 1 -1 from the Nou camp, so it wasn’t even that bad apart from the ref’s role!

  134. Arsession,

i think that move you talked about was that CL game against Liverpool in 2008. adebayor scored from that walcott run…but we got knocked out because gerrard dived to win a penalty right at the end.

  135. Team spirit
The semis is far more glamourous and financially rewarding than when we exited. We could have also had a dif ref who wasnt such a cunt.
I think the point some were trying to make before the whole ref conspiracy was brought up again was that we took our foot off the peddle after getting into a great position to finish top of the group and it cost us. probably only one round in the CL but still it cost us.
Lets not make the same mistake this season ref corruption or not.

  136. Snowgtokiwa…….thanks……I was more focused on Theo’s sublime effort – than the miserable ending.

  137. Gunnerjones, I think you are very smart.

  138. Why should it matter who you are playing if you are going through on aggregate?

The ultimate object of sports is to beat who is before you. If you don’t get the top spot in the group, for whatever reason, so be it.

You gonna cry and whine like a little girl that you have to beat the best?

    foolishness!

  139. Irish, if we’d given up on our injury prone players we wouldn’t be talking about RVP scoring a hat trick against Chelsea. Diaby stays. And if you persist with this line of stupidity I will repeatedly tell you to fuck off.

Henristic, knock it off with the getting ahead of ourselves nonsense. I wish you’d show your level headedness when the doomers come in here and let rip. It would be awesome if you, for once, told them that things are not as bad as they think.

Today I want over the top partisanship from Arsenal supporters. Let’s get ahead of ourselves and enjoy the intoxicating effects of telling the doomers to eat shit.

  140. If Wenger is persisting with a player, I like the odds of that player making a great impact for Arsenal.

Diaby is a beast and he will be come back just in time to help keep our unbeaten run going.

  141. Paul no offense to you, I think you are very smart too,,( not sure if you were being sarcastic) Just different ways of thinking thats all. We do have the Squad to rotate now but Id rather we rotate in the league till we are for sure good in the CL.

  142. well said, Gains.

    to all Arsenal fans:

your team needs you now more than ever. if you don’t have the guts, then shut up. it would help the team much more.

  143. Whoever thought Van Persie was doing a Nazi salute is an old, uninformed idiot who hasn’t watched MTV ever in his life.

  144. George – was that you asking about Tomas?

    if so……
I thought he gave another positive TR7 performance. In extra time……it was hilarious with Ramsey, Arteta, and Tomas playing 3 v 4 against Chelsea players – maintaining possession with only heading skills.

    If not,
he initiated the attack that led to our last goal……he headed the ball away from Meiralles (who was attempting to kick a deflection back into the Chelsea penalty area)……Tomas headed to Song – who returned a short pass back to Tomas…..a few seconds later he played the ball square to Arteta……who then played the pass to vP.

  145. Crying like a little girl about corrupt refs is better eh ?

  146. Henristic, getting Barcelona in the second round last season wasn’t bad actually. It took a very mysterious second yellow for us to be eliminated.

  147. Gunnerjones, I don’t mind different views. I concur that we let the top place slip, it wasn’t good at all. I agree that we should try to take the easiest path by placing tops.. However, that doesn’t take away from the fact that we were going through at the point in the match when the ref stepped in.

I have no problem with us having to beat the best, at whatever point though.. We were the only team to beat Barca in the CL. We still had a chance at the end of the match being down a man.

  148. How does one cry about corruption? it should be opposed and exposed as much as possible. Unless you are into that sort of thing.

  149. I am not afraid of our team playing a big boy, we are quite big ourselves and I have always liked our odds. As it is, Barca have never beaten us when we at full strength.

  150. Pedanticus Georgeous: “Ok Miami we will ignore reaction times then . Apparently they don’t apply to keepers. At least I have learned something new.”

Cech could’ve never gotten to those near post shots. Whomever thinks those two finishes weren’t amazing needs their heads checked. On both occasions the keeper was well positioned as he could’ve been beaten on either post. Saying that those two goals were gaffes gives our strikers no credit. Valdes can testify to the fact that Van Persie can make any goalkeeper look like the biggest mug.

  151. Gains ,apparently the Goal Keepers Guild disagrees with us.

  152. And for once i agree with both of you! Strange times indeed.

  153. @gains actually it took a very wasteful Dane to get us eliminated :)
had he scored on that open goal we would have won and he would have written himself into the Arsenal history books forever.
Istead hes up in Sunderland enjoying the smog…

  154. I agree, the goals scored were from some lovely strikes.

As far as being beaten at the near post, I believe that some times the goalie is not expecting the player to do that, so its hard for them to react.

I remember Eduardo doing that a lot. What a striker..

  155. Gainsbourg69 | October 31, 2011 at 5:18 pm
“Henristic, knock it off with the getting ahead of ourselves nonsense. I wish you’d show your level headedness when the doomers come in here and let rip.”

Level headed. Ha, I wish! You obviously missed my 11.44am post.

Besides I would think my approach of ignoring doomers is the more ‘level headed’ thing to do. Never saw the point in bashing doomers and don’t derive any joy from telling people to eat shit.

  156. I’ve been reading a lot of people say that had it not been for Terry’s slip we would’ve drawn that match. What they fail to realize is that we scored a very similar goal against them at the Emirates when we beat them 3-1 last season and this latest one was no accident. The midfield was putting pressure on Malouda and he only had the option to pass it back to Terry. It was the same as last season except it was Cole who made the bad pass to Terry which Theo intercepted.

  157. G69,
You have to admit that the chances of a ‘mysterious second yellow’, would have been significantly lower if we were playing any other team. Also, the chances of seeing the game out with 10 men is similarly more likely, if we weren’t facing Barca.

Someone else has made the point that the main lesson to be learnt from that situation is that we should do our best to top our group, as it makes it less likely that we will meet the stronger team in whichever other group we are paired with. This is pretty much conventional wisdom, and we’d do well to heed it.

  158. Henristic: “Besides I would think my approach of ignoring doomers is the more ‘level headed’ thing to do. Never saw the point in bashing doomers and don’t derive any joy from telling people to eat shit.”

If ignoring the doomers is level headed then why the need to pipe up when people are overcome with excitement? Why not just shut the hell up and let people have their moment?

I know, you have a sort of kinship with the doomers that is a bit uncanny.

Telling the doomers to eat shit is just pay back for all the crap they spewed in the preseason or whenver we’ve had an adverse result.

  159. I fail to see how Arsenal need to learn any lesson due to an idiot ref! what kind of thinking is that?

We shouldn’t be complacent in any games and try to coast our way through. That is the lesson we need to learn.

  160. I find it amusing when pundits and commentators say keepers should never be beaten at their near post. I can’t recall a manager or GK saying the same thing (I could be wrong though). Its a meaningless statement because EVERY keeper gets beaten at their near post. Keepers get beat between the legs too, and in many varied other embarrassing ways.

When you shoot ass hard as Theo and RvP did, it leaves the GK with little hope of saving the shot, unless they are luckily placed, or have superhuman reflexes.

  161. I actually believe there is some agreement going on.

  162. Henristic, who cares? We would’ve faced Barcelona in the third round anyway. If anything, the fact that we were better than Barcelona suggests that it doesn’t matter who we get in the second round. What’s important is that we qualify.

  163. I agree with that Henristic.

  164. I dont,Oh wait yes so do I(force of habit there)

  165. Bro Paul,
    Read my post again.
Better still, answer me this; do you not think we stood a better chance in beating the second placed team in Barca’s group last season (can’t remember who they were), with or without corrupt/idiot ref?

  166. Henristic, we were leading the tie, that’s all that mattered at that point.

  167. As long as there are no niggles from Saturday I see an unchanged side for tomorrow.

With all our defenders fit (fingers shaking as I type that) I think we`ll see some rotation over the next few weeks but for now I`d leave it as it is.

  168. @ pedantic george | October 31, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Funny. You weren’t a hippie, were you (man)?

  169. Paul-N, as a ‘keeper I have to agree with you. I don’t care if the shot that scores is a candidate for the goal of the fu$king century, if it beats me at my near post I am beyond pissed!! The only appropriate reaction for a ‘keeper who is beaten at their near post is one of absolute disgust that they let that in. I don’t care if it was traveling so fast as to render moot the question of whether anything can exceed the speed of light!! Near post goals are almost as bad as being chipped!!

  170. G69,
You might not care, but common sense and conventional football wisdom says we should care. It sounds silly to even be having this discussion because I’m sure you know it already, but you’re in one of your contrary moods and I got a bit of time on my hands…

In sport, you want to avoid meeting the best opponents for as long as you can. That is the whole idea behind seeding, and is why the group system in knock-out competitions is often designed for 1st placed teams from one group to meet up 2nd placed teams from other group, as a way of ‘rewarding’ them for finishing first. Doesn’t always work out that to the advantage of the 1st placed teams of course, but that is the intent.

  171. Gris Gris,
But you hardly hear a keeper blamed for being chipped, compared to the near post syndrome. Why is that?

  172. Paul-N | October 31, 2011 at 6:22 pm
“Henristic, we were leading the tie, that’s all that mattered at that point.”

Ha ha. You clearly have no clue what the discussion is about.

  173. Henristic,

Yeah, not sure why anyone would prefer to finish second rather than first. No guarentees that things will be any easier but a much better chance I`d think.

If we`re in a similar position this year to last I don`t see Arsene sticking out the reserves in our final group game this time for instance.

  174. @ Gris Gris | October 31, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I am intrigued by your comments. I would have thought that it would be better to be positioned wherever provides the best chance to stop the opposition from scoring. Are goalkeepers taught that a near-post goal is somehow worse than a far-post goal, and that therefore they should over-play toward the near post?

  175. Henristic, that is common with you to be honest, I usually don’t get what you are talking about.

  176. On top of every thing else, the amount of a boost it gives to the teams confidence topping the group surely gives some momentum going into the next round. I mean if all the negativity of posters and fans has a effect on the players performance as some on here would have us believe. Then we should assume that slipping from a great position and expecting to top the group to just qualifying for the next round must drop the players heads too. if we are to believe every thing else that affects them then this is surely not that far fetched.

  177. G69,

    Like your views, much.

  178. On the finishing first or second debate, I’m with Henristic (although I also like ‘Heuristic’ – see 2:08pm) in thinking that we should play the percentages and do our best to win the group.

One would think that, to win the competition, a team would have to beat the best other team, but it is not always the case. Sometimes another, inferior team knocks out the favourite. To my mind, the longer we can avoid playing the better teams in a cup competition, the better. Re Barça, of course, I would hope we would beat them over two legs, but I imagine we would have a better chance in a one-off match, ie in the final (ignore the Paris result – too small a sample size!).

  179. I’m not saying I want to come in second . What I’m saying is that if we rest players in order to continue our run in the league and come second in our CL group, I will not be upset about it. I’d rather we kept up our run in the league so we can secure CL football next season.

  180. Gainsbourg69 | October 31, 2011 at 6:06 pm
If ignoring the doomers is level headed then why the need to pipe up when people are overcome with excitement? Why not just shut the hell up and let people have their moment?

Making stuff up again eh? Where did I stop anyone from having their moment?

I know, you have a sort of kinship with the doomers that is a bit uncanny

Why don’t you just go ahead and call me a doomer :) You know you want to….

  181. Exactly Billy, Porto played who in the final ? Monaco, who did Monaco knock out? I may be wrong but i believe it was Real ! New Zealand just won the world cup and only had to play one big game against Australia.

  182. I don’t think that anyone has disagreed that we should try to win the group and try to have the easiest route in any competition.

  183. Paul-N | October 31, 2011 at 6:55 pm
“Henristic, that is common with you to be honest, I usually don’t get what you are talking about.”

Well, why don’t you just ask for clarification then, mi bro?

  184. Henristic, I am not arguing against us trying to top the group, that would be foolish. We were complacent and lost control last season.

  185. Did I read that Chamakh was injured..? Was kind of hoping to see if playing with Jenkinson helped him….

  186. G69, @ 6.59

Fair point. It`s a balancing act for sure.

  187. If we prioritize the CL and PL, then we’d have less need to rest our best players for either me think. They can rest for the domestic cups.
That said, I think we can afford to rest RvP tomorrow (if he needs it). But that would mean playing all the rest of our 1st choice players (Gerv, Song, Ramsey, Arteta, etc). We should rest no more than 1 (or at most 2) first choice starters for CL games, until we secure top spot, or until we are reasonably sure of the performance levels of the 2nd and 3rd choice players. If, for instance, Park puts in a brilliant shift tomorrow, that would suggest we can afford to drop RvP more often. Same for the other positions.

  188. @ Gainsbourg69 | October 31, 2011 at 6:59 pm

I see. That’s not unreasonable. We may rest one or two who are ‘in the red’ from Sunday but I think we will put out a strong team.

  189. Some people state the fucking blindingly obvious ,then want a pat on the back for their troubles.

The ref was bent WE should have gone on to the semi’s and no team would have been favorites against us.We may then have rallied and gone on to will the league. On such moments history can be changed.

  190. Yes george we should blame it all on that ref ! The CL, The CC and the league. Now thats being mature now isnt it.

  191. Do you want a pat on the back for that non-blindingly obvious post, George?

  192. Gunnerjones, what was the turning point of the CL tie?

  193. Billy’s Boots,
I saw the ‘Heuristic’ slip earlier but ignored it, but now that you mention it. I do kinda like it.

To be honest, I’m not as sure as you are that Wenger would put out a strong team, but the fact that our next match is West Brom at home suggests it is likely. Perhaps he’ll rest RvP for one and Song or some other 1st choice player for the other, or something like that.

  194. Gunnerjones ,I wont sarcastically tell you that you are smart.Because you clearly are not.
Was it a huge turning point?
Would a victory over Barca given us a huge confidence boost?
Instead was it another kick in the balls being robbed?
Did we need our confidence to be repaired?

If the answer to all 4 questions is “yes”,then why is it so improbable that the season could have turned out very different?

So yes ,That one single travesty of justice fucked more up than the result in Barca.

    Now can you grasp that?

  195. Tomorrow I’d play with the same fron three we used to beat Bolton in the CC and I’d bring Vermaelen and Djourou to give Merts and Kos a bit of a rest. If we draw I will not be too upset since a draw tomorrow and a draw in the other group game keeps us at the top of the table. Wouldn’t you guys agree that this is a reasonable gambel?

  196. I get what you saying George, but if that is true and all our woes are a direct result of that then we need to be asking questions about mental toughness and resilience. I know I would expect more from the people that represent my company.

Just seems like more of the same,, blame shifting, refusal to man up ext ext,, but i guess by now thats what I should expect from you.

  197. I agree with you G69, we have to keep our team fresh.

It makes no sense to talk about depth if we don’t use it. We must keep pace in the league. That is a given.

  198. BB, I was never taught specifically to overplay the near post, I think the reactions to near post goals have more to do with the fact that you are closer to that post and naturally feel like it should be easier to stop balls shot to the post you are closest to. Thus you are extra pissed that one got in when “theoretically” it should have been easier to stop.

Having said that keepers in the PL seem to almost have a supernatural ability to pick up the subtle physical cues that tell where a shot-maker will be shooting and can anticipate direction very well. That’s what makes RVP’s third goal, Santos’, and Theo’s goal so great. They were struck where the keeper wasn’t but also, and just as importantly, with so much pace that it didn’t matter what Cech did, he was beat already. Which brings me back to Paul-N’s original point. Cech is surely beating himself up for allowing some of those, even though I personally don’t think he could have done any better, i.e. they were going in no matter what he did.

  199. Ha ha Gunnerjones touché

I think you have a point here and to be honest its is one I would have argued against 5 months ago.I was wrong it appears.

You said “we need to be asking questions about mental toughness and resilience.”
I think you are right , but I now think that is exactly what Arsene did over the summer.

  200. From my perspective…….f*ck the pundits and media that back in August had already written Arsenal off in the Champions League – most predicting we wouldn’t advance to the group stages.

Stirring up the Cesc/Nasri departures – Arsenal are a team in decline, no good team loses its best players, pointing out that Arsene had lost the plot and locker room, and on …. and on….. and on….

For me, winning the group stage is important for short and long-term image of the club, players, and manager.

Tomorrow night, our manager will select those that he feels will bring us the 3 points.

  201. Exactly, Paul. Plus you have the side benefit of confidence spreading through the whole team at the moment. I’m sure our second string are dying for a chance to outshine the starters as well.

  202. will the thrill

C’mon GunnerJones get with the program. Maturity is being able to overlook the fact that our player was strangled by a barca player, and received no punishment.

  203. will the thrill

And I f**king know what maturity is because I am 21 years old.

  204. will the thrill

….cheers for another Arsenal victory tomorrow!

  205. Gris Gris…..
on Theo’s goal……..get the rope out and lets check the angles…..

Technique is pedestrian if the mind is shackled or distracted.

At this level of play, mental clarity is an absolute necessity. (imo) Agree with your observations above.

  206. Hey I never ever said we were fairly treated, I have personally got that Buccaca fucker or what ever that refs name is on my to get before i die list. It was shocking, and in this day and age of sports i still cannot believe that people can get away with that shit. If i was Arsenal I would have demanded an inquiry into the refs integrity. But,, cant have that as the sole reason for our demise after that.
And yes george I believe that Wenger did rectify that issue this off season. We seem to have turned a corner.

  207. True, Gris Gris. This is why I thought that the criticism levelled at Almunia for getting beat twice at the near post by Ibrahimovic was hysterical. I mean, what can a keeper do when he’s got the striker at less than five meters away? Not much, if you ask me. All he can do is hope that the strike comes close to him. Other than that he’s fried.

  208. “But,, cant have that as the sole reason for our demise after that.”

I am not saying that .There were a few .
    Like the CC catastrophe
Arshavin not winning it ,a disallowed goal and two stone wall pen’s denied, against Sunderland
    Barca
    4 4 @Newcastle
    Eboue against Liverpool.

Any one of these events, with a different outcome could have”rebooted” our season.

  209. Diaby injures calf on zombie walk, burns hand on Guy Fawkes Night, strains back muscle carrying Christmas shopping….

  210. Wenger’s post suspension suspension was a message, Arsesession. And that message was don’t fuck with UEFA or its officials. They couldn’t have made it any clearer.

  211. MDGunner

I heard that Diaby had injured his ankle getting off the treatment table.

  212. will the thrill

Sorry GunnerJones that may have came off harsher than intended. After all, the last thing we need is another pointless debate about Cuntalona and their ilk. Peace.

  213. *Gunnerjones, sorry.

  214. The delay on signing RVP due to cash problems is a new one on me. He signed in May ’04, didn’t we spend £10m+ on Reyes in Jan ’04?

  215. Limestonegunner

The point of having a deep squad is having your best players rested for your biggest games without it costing you along the way. Tomorrow’s game is the biggest one we have until mid-late December when we go to ManCity. We need to rest some players but the talk among many is rather wild in terms of their lineups. This is not a Carling Cup game!!?!?!?

The reason why it is so major a game is because we guarantee qualification with a win and virtually assure finishing first; all we need is another victory or two draws at most to assure topping our group. Marseille is our biggest threat for that so two victories against them will cripple them and do you see them going to Dortmund and winning? This is the marquee tournament and our future in it is guaranteed with a win. The reasons why we want to finish first are also obvious and the only one not mentioned is that the deeper we go in the CL the more matchdays we have which means more revenues from it and from the CL tv pot. Since we are a self-sustaining club, this matters a great deal to our ability to sign Walcott, Song, and especially RvP to the inevitable wage increases and any new signings in January and the summer. The other non-obvious reason is that every time we go out of the CL, I think, it has a negative consequence on our form in other competitions. This is because the players absolutely love being in the CL–it is the prestige competition.

So, fine, we can rest RvP, but that means playing Song, Arteta, Gervinho, Walcott, and Ramsey. Why not play him for 65 minutes and then bring on Park and substitute for whoever looks most tired?

It is early in the season and Song missed three games, Gervinho three, Santos has only played since mid-late September, Merts missed the first several games, Dj hardly played until he began filling in for right back, there were lots of rotations for the CC games. The only players who have played a lot are RvP and Kos. Arteta came here because of the CL so will be very keen to play. Everton missed its first game and he missed a game when he joined Arsenal. These guys are not going to be tired right now and we can start rotating more as soon as we are qualified.

  216. Not saying it’s not right btw…

Just not something I’ve heard before.

    Anyway, still buzzing from Saturday!

  217. Limestonegunner

We all know it but it is nice to see the numbers. RvP is better than Messi in goal-scoring in 2011. Yeah man!
    http://www.7amkickoff.com/2011/robin-van-persie-better-than-messi/

  218. Limestonegunner

dups, that poll has Jones slightly edging JW right now, what a joke. Plus they list the Ox as playing for Portsmouth! Now that is going to get the goat not just of Gooners but especially the Saints supporters! I voted for JW, but clearly this outfit has no credibility…

  219. Limestonegunner

George, can you tell these folks that we settled this already last night!?!

  220. Dups

Would that be the new zero-gravity treatment table?

  221. Yes LG ,bloody part timers

  222. I noticed that LG

    Oxlade-Chamberlain – Portsmouth – inglese

    Bit of a cock-up there.

  223. If you’ve missed this little animation, I recommend it:

‘What I imagine was going through Szczesny’s head at the time’

  224. Diaby will be back when it matters.Dec ,Jan and Feb. We don’t need him in November.

  225. Stoke RFC 2 down at HT

  226. Limestonegunner

George, lol! Yes, they have to stop paying attention to their families, friends and such in the evenings; we can’t keep repeating ourselves (although you have done a good job reminding people of your Arshavin views!).

Dups, it’s like saying Balotelli was playing for AC Milan or Gago was playing for Lazio! Well actually it is more like saying Pastore is playing for Catania, tbh; it is just two teams on the south coast in the championship, but they are fierce rivals.

  227. LG .Really.? I cant remember ever saying what I thing of Andrei.

I will give it some thought and do a post.

  228. This made me laugh

    Stokies, Wherever you may be,
    We know about your Incestry,
You’ve got webbed hands, and an extra toe
And a rather odd looking yellow glow.

  229. Limestonegunner

Sounds good, George. I look forward to your fresh insights and some unanticipated suggestions about where he should play and what kind of defensive responsibilities should come with the position!

  230. NOPE… wilshere edging ahead naturally… its cos the gunners had not heard about it yet

  231. Lol LG.But seriously can you remember me saying the very same on Fans Forum this time last year?
They weren’t listening then, they aren’t listing now.Perhaps they never will
    Starry starry night……………………………………

Oh sorry burst into song why don’t I ?

  232. Lime, I don’t think tomorrow’s game is the biggest game until we meet Man City. With a draw we stay ahead of Marseille and even if Olympiacos beats Dortmund away, which I highly doubt, we still have our fate in our own hands. The biggest game at the moment is West Brom. We have to beat them or we slide further down the table and the CL spot becomes harder to attain.

  233. Clerkenwell Gooner

Aaron looks happy at last! (He’s been not only having to make do without Cesc, Sami & LJW, but also his best mate, Big Nik, got shipped up north of the Watford Gap for a loan spell.) So very pleased for him, for his contribution on Saturday. And he also looked super-keen to score all the way through (even kind of denying Arteta a clear chance.)

Thought Santos did really well (from 55 min onwards, which is when I got to the pub, when it was already 2-2), although I gather he was a bit precarious earlier. Also, he’s goal-hungry. We need to keep the goals coming from everywhere.

Amazing we still have some key players still out/on their way back.

Looking forward to the CC City game – kind of a trial run for how we’ll tackle them in the league, although I imagine Song vs Silva might wait for another day.

Can’t imagine AW wanting to do anything other than pound Marseilles into dust. (But with Barça in 2nd place in their group, we’ll still end up with them.)

  234. @ Gris Gris | October 31, 2011 at 7:54 pm

    That’s interesting, thank you.

Re picking up the subtle physical cues, I think you are right. There is a passage in the book Bounce: How Champions Are Made by Matthew Syed that discusses this skill. The gist of it is that one of the skills found in top-class performers in sport is their ability to recognise these subtle cues. For example, a top tennis player will have a better idea of where a serve will go not by watching the racket head or the ball, but by watching the opponent’s hips, legs, etc – cues that others would miss completely. This skill, which is very specific to the sport they play, is honed through thousands of hours of mindful practice. As you’d guess, the best are typically better at it than their rivals. I would think that, for a goalkeeper, it must be an extremely important skill.

  235. Andre Santos is good for seven or eight goals a season. I think Kolarov is the only left back who will challenge him for the amount of goals scored by a fullback.

  236. I really pity that old fellow Joey Barton! Left Newcastle cause they weren’t ambitious enough for him. Well, just goes to prove that there is karma in the world … and it comes back to bite you in the arse, if you are a proper c*nt like Joey.

  237. Gains, we have 28 games to make up ground in the league. We have three games remaining in the CL group stages and one more against our biggest challengers for qualification and especially top spot. It is much, much bigger than West Brom and that is why the Boss said last week that we had two cup games this week: Chelsea and Marseille. Two big tests. He thinks this game is crucial because if you win it you break Marseille in two and take the group by the throat.

I am not against playing Park for RvP or TV for Kos. They have played the most games. But if you sit RvP you have to make sure we win this game and that means playing our best midfield and Gervinho.

  238. With a draw, Gains, you have to play both of the remaining two games at full strength to get top spot. Win tomorrow and you can rest people for the league for at least one of them, perhaps two depending on the results in the other games. So play now and you’ll be able to rotate more.

Consider the confidence that a win will give, insuring qualification, putting a string of victories against top teams of Europe–Marseille twice and Chelsea. I think that is worth stretching a bit for. My team, which I posted last night had four changes but played RvP. If you want to rest RvP, then you have to play Ramsey, Arteta, Song, Gervinho, Santos.

  239. I dont get why Cesc is nominated to that golden ball at all. He had a shite season last seson imo…

  240. @poodle
Full agreement. Season before he was the best midfielder in Europe, and got nothing. This season he was subpar — by the standards he set himself at least — and gets nominated. I do wonder if it might be related to this fancy new shirt he’s wearing!

  241. Because he plays for Barca and has already scored 7 goals and 4 assists in 7 starts and 8 subs. He is essentially getting the recognition now for leading Europe for the last 5 years in assists and chances created. As an Arsenal player for some reason he doesn’t get that attention afforded to continental players. Thierry Henry should have won it, Vieira could have won it and so on.

  242. Cunts of the week.

Steven Howard and Andy bitter as a pint of boddingtons Jacobs

  243. @limestone, not being rude but even you could hve scored 7 for Barcelona surrounded by the players they got. They only play crap teams :)

  244. Duke ,is that some sort of code?

  245. but yeh you are right. Barcelona players are very well conected indeed. their influence streches all the way to the inner chambers of the secret societies within the secret societies at uefa.

  246. AW is very clever. He has started responding to all the RvP plaudits and questions about how great RvP is by pointing out that he benefits from the way we play, our attack-minded orientation and the chances created for him. He is saying Arsenal are not a one man team and he is subtly telling RvP that his success is related to the style of Arsenal and his prominence in our attack. If we bring in some players and show that we can and will win trophies, RvP will stay. Money will not be the problem as long as it is decent money befitting a player of his caliber.

  247. Marseille will probably try to play the same way to get a draw or nick a win on a swift counterattack or set piece. Deschamps has been talking about RvP and the need to stop him. He is a tough customer and might have some scheme for physical close marking of RvP. I wonder if there is some merit to the idea of letting him rest but be on the bench for a late bit of heroics if needed. The merit of Park is that he is familiar with Marseille. I wonder how he did last year against them.

  248. @lime clever or not, he does tell the truth though. Im sure RvP benefits tremendousley from being our best player, our captain and the focal point for attack.
I think he really enjoys being the top dog. And thrives on the new responsibility he has. In another club he would just be one of many stars. In arsenal he is THE star.
Cesc seemed to find it more of a burden, But RvP, i think he loves it.
Hes always been like that though. I guess tahts why he rubbed some people the wrong way back in the day. And one cannot deny hes doing a very good job so far.

It seems like the rest of the team are happy with finally having a leader to :)

  249. but rvp did not score our last goal against Marseille, that was Aaron Ramsey! Let them stop RvP, it will give more room for the rest of our players to score

  250. Rvp didnt creat any of the first three goals, obviously the first one but again gervinho put it on a silver platter. RVP has had alot of easy goals. not like he is making and scoring them himself.

Andy(bitter as a pint of Boddingtons)Jacobs actually had the bitterness to say without RVP we are mid table team.

very suprised we are getting absolutely no credit for scoring 5ive even though we were 5ive to one to win which makes one think that this chelsea team must be a bit good at them odds…but nothing not a fukin titter. just a load of chelsea were poor…chelsea didnt turn up…chelsea gifted…fuck cunt shit blah blah…cun ts.

  251. @duke aparantly spurs were “silky” though against a low table qpr while ” top teams have ridiculousley naive defences” since they can let Arsenal score 5.

  252. Last year Park scored the equalizer away at Marseille in the 79th minute. The return fixture ended in a 0-0 draw. So he has scored on them. Maybe worth starting him. I don’t think Wenger will do it though.

  253. Poodle, agree that AW tells the truth and the truth is RvP belongs at Arsenal and should win trophies with us as our inspirational captain. I hope we can do something special this year and continue to build for next, and that includes having a good transfer window in January and next summer.

My worry is not that they will stop him but play very physically in their zeal to stop him. I agree that the rest of our attack can come up with the goals needed.

  254. The key thing that has happened and no one seem to talk about is the fact that Gervinho has started to square the ball to RVP more. at the begining I was really fustrated with him he used to get into fantastic positions but rarely made the final pass, he wanted to score himself,I remember one game were he did not pass to RVP instead blasted the ball over the bar , RVP was in better position than him but did not make the pass. RVP gave him a rollocking for not passing to him and this is what I call leadership, he made his point very clear. since then things have changed. He had a hand in most of RVP’s goals so far Gervinho to me is the unsung hero

  255. even if we win out on our group in the champions league, we might meet BARKAcrybabies in the next round. still, I’m of the mind to put out our strongest available 11 in tomorrow. thumpING Marseille in submission by end of first half and then make the proper defensive substitutions at half time to see the game to the end. they have won four games in a row in all competitions since we beat them on practicely the last kick of the game. should not underestimate these guys and need to snuff out any hope they have for winning this game EARLY. given hope these guys will grow in confidence. hope we don’t suffer any major injuries tomorrow. here is hoping for convincing and moral boosting thumping of the highest order manyana for my GUNS.
    CITY, COYR, COME ON

  256. Goonerkam – “A recent survey illustrated most Tottenham Hotspur fans have had sex in the shower!

In the survey, carried out for leading toiletries firm ‘Brut’, a whopping 86% of Tottenham fans said that they have enjoyed sex in the shower.

The other 14% said they hadn’t been to prison”………yet :)

  257. A major hurricane (Hurricane Gazza) and earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale hit Tottenham in the early hours of Tuesday with its epicentre in Bruce Castle.

Victims were seen wandering around aimlessly, muttering “Faaackinell”.

The hurricane decimated the area, causing approximately £30 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Majorca and the Costa Del Sol were damaged beyond repair.

Three areas of historic burnt out cars were disturbed. Many locals were woken well before their giros arrived. LAST.FM, one of Tottenham’s local radio stations, reported that hundreds of residents were confused and bewildered and were still trying to come to terms with the fact that something interesting had happened in Bruce Castle.

One resident – Tracy Sharon Smith, a 15-year-old mother of 5 said, “It was such a shock, my little Chardonnay-Mercedes came running into my bedroom crying. My youngest two, Tyler-Morgan and Victoria-Storm slept through it all. I was still shaking when I was skinning up and watching Trisha the next morning.”

Apparently looting, muggings and car crime were unaffected and carried on as normal.

The British Red Cross has so far managed to ship 4,000 crates of Sunny Delight to the area to help the stricken locals. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found large quantities of personal belongings, including benefit books, jewellery from Elizabeth Duke bone china from Poundland.
