Arsenal Win Is A Sign O’ The Times

Arsenal 2 – 1 Sunderland

1 – 0 van Persie (21 seconds)
1 – 1 Larsson (31 minutes)
2 – 1 van Persie (83)

Arsenal moved into tenth, their highest Premier League position since the opening day draw with Newcastle. On a day when he had used his programme notes to quash speculation – or at attempt to – about his future, Robin van Persie was lauded as the matchwinner, his talents being recognised. The Dutchman believes his fitness levels are the best they have been for years; yesterday he proved his value to the team.

From the kick-off, Arsenal sought to impose themselves on the match and erase the demons from their psyche. They did so with startling directness. Rosicky dipped the ball into Gervinho’s path, the Ivorian strode toward the area, passed inside to van Persie as the Sunderland defence parted like the Red Sea and drilled the ball unerringly past Mignolet.

One-Nil To The Arsenal inside the opening minute and a team that thrives on controlling possession, maintaining pressure on their opponents, was given the perfect platform from which to build. That they never quite took it was down to a mixture of good and bad fortune allied to outstanding football.

Within fifteen minutes, van Persie could – perhaps should - have completed a hat-trick. An audacious chip over the stranded Sunderland ‘keeper has brought comparisons with Dennis Bergkamp, no doubt pleasing to the Dutch ear. Deafness might be better with a drive that missed the far post with the accuracy we came to expect of John Jensen.

Gervinho proved to be a livewire in this hazy spell for Arsenal as their rampaging start threatened to overwhelm the visitors. Having played a part in van Persie’s opener, Arsenal’s summer signing drilled a shot wide before the frailties which have blighted the season thus far.

van Persie’s clumsy challenge gave away a freekick in the Arsenal half. From that, the defence scrambled the ball away, Arteta leading with his arm to clatter Cattermole succeeded only in handling in a dangerous position. Larsson returned to haunt Arsenal with a superb and unstoppable freekick which arced into the far corner with such pace that Szczesny’s dive was in vain.

Within minutes, the wobbles had returned to the Arsenal defence, the Pole almost gifted Sunderland an unexpected lead when he charged unnecessarily out of his area, missed his challenge and was mightily grateful to Alex Song’s dilligence in carrying out his defensive duties.

Redemption would come minutes before the break. Arsenal’s defence was stretched once more, Cattermole three yards from goal aimed his header toward an unguarded net only to see the arms of Szczesny reach and make a fabulous save to deny the Wearsiders.

On such moments are reputations built. The watching Lukasz Fabianski must be wondering where it all went wrong for him. Had those moments been his, the wanderings of a madman would have been remembered not the blinding save.

The second half began much as the first with Arsenal in the ascendancy. Kieran Gibbs withdrew with less than ten minutes played and Andre Santos replaced him. How serious the youngsters stomach injury is remains to be seen but if it is a long-term absence, he could be forgiven for feeling cursed.

But it was a familiar story. Aside from Mignolet scrambling van Persie’s effort away on the hour mark, I cannot remember a clear cut opening being forged despite the monopoly of possession Arsenal enjoyed.

Wenger though has options. This time Andrey Arshavin was introduced to the fray and he brought a shining light to the proceedings, his scurrying run and mazy dribble through the visitors defence deserved more than the effort which screwed wide.

But on cue, van Persie came up with a captain’s performance. For a team that relies upon the technical proficiency of its players, Arsenal are hopeless at set-pieces. van Persie, Arteta, even Walcott were clueless at the concept of getting the ball over the wall and then dipping under the bar. A difficult technique to master, let alone deliver on a consistent basis, granted but…

When it mattered, when the team needed it, van Persie got it right. His finish seven minutes from time was every bit as excellent as Larsson’s had been nearly an hour earlier. Mignolet was stranded as ball lifted, dipped and curled into the net, a sense of relief tangible as the net rippled.

The victory was much needed. It is not the dawning of a new era just yet, defeating a team in as poor form as Sunderland does not mean global domination is just around the corner. But as Arsène pointed out, this is the fifth consecutive home win; by the time we visit Stamford Bridge in a fortnight’s time, that could be eight in all competitions. That is the beginning of a run. Throw in an away result or two and by the end of November, a head of steam can be built.

But that is to get too far ahead. This season, if nothing else, has shown how transient form is, how unpredictable Arsenal are. It is a sign o’ the times that the talk is of how Szczesny saved the win not how van Persie could have settled the outcome before fifteen minutes was on the clock. That outlook may change over time and perhaps we’ll look back at the Pole’s moment of glory as the moment a season kickstarted into action. Until then, enjoying a win will suffice.

’til Tomorrow.

  2. Champions league spot :)

  3. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/8830446/Arsene-Wenger-admits-Robin-van-Persie-could-leave-Arsenal-when-his-contract-runs-out.html

no idea how the writer came to that conclusion. read wenger’s comments and he didnt say anything. and rvp didnt say anything either.

  4. YW – Nice summary.

A good win, and much needed too. There were some excellent performences on the day. Some random thoughts:

    * Szchezney made a world class save, and one mistake aside, looked excellent.
    * Rosicky had a very good game, his best in a long while.
    * His passing was a bit off, but I thought Song was superb.
    * Jenkinson did well at right back and put in a good shift.
    * Genvihno was good in the first half, but missing in the second.
    * Mertesacker looks every inch a quality defender.
    * Santos is better than Gibbs, but looks an individual as opposed to part of a back 4 unit. Hopefully that will come with more games though.
    * RvP is unplayable on that form. Great performance from the skipper.
    * I thought Theo’s 1st touch looked much improved. Offered very little though. Worked hard to support Jenkinson, but rarely offered the young full back out out ball down the line.
    * Arshavin was dangerous when he came on. More of that please.

  5. Blackburn were worse than this and we still managed to lose to them, even help them win… so this was a massive win, make no mistake.

  6. To add to my comments on the players; this game illustrated why we could (note I said could, not would) struggle this season. We played some great football, but whilst controlling the game we could not put Sunderland to the sword. For the little pressure they had, they were still able to fashion some very good chances. In summary, we play nice football, but are not clinical enough and are too easy to create goalscoring opportunities against. Sound familiar?

  7. Stop fucking moaning, Andy

  8. Encouraging performance from Jenkinson, who nevertheless received a poor press based as far as I could see on single error which led to Chezzer moment of madness….

Also thought PerMert looked solid, Kozzer rather less so (and played attacker onside unecessarilty a couple of times)

  9. Frank – Who is moaning? Just comments on how I see the side and comments on our most recent game.

  10. GA

When-o-when-o-when will we turn these unconvincing wins into convincing ones?

That is when we will be convinced!

  11. Cautious optimism, and it’s very much a case of small steps for now. Good to see Arshavin looking so bright when he came on – I think he will be important in the coming months because, for all his faults, he does possess game-changing ability.

Let’s hope we can build on this over the next couple of games.

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2011/10/16/van-persie-a-class-above-as-arsenal-edge-past-struggling-sunderland/

  12. SA – If we keep getting “unconvincing wins” that is fine and dandy by me. It will be no good for my underwear cupboard, but I can always get some more I suppose ;)

  13. Wenger said you lose confidence very quickly but to gian it it takes time. We are on the road to getting that confiodence back. Steadily we are improving, people forget we had a team who had no pre-season together. the last few games are the pre season and we can see there was some great passing and understanding between the players yesterday, it can only get better. Despite all the rubbish that has been written about Arsenal in crisis, we are only 3 points behind the Spuds and 4 on liverpool.what crisis ?

  14. Was Chamakh injured?

It seems strnage that he was not on the bench, but Park was. I say strange because Arsene has thrown Chamakh on when we have been chasing a goal, but does not seem to afford the same chance to Park. So what is the point of having Park ahead of Chamakh in the pecking order if he won’t use him when we need a goal?

  15. That is true. We are way of the front runners, but not far away from the top 4 spot so things are definately looking up. If we can just put a good run together we will be back amongst it in no time.

  16. SA Gooner

So now, winning is not enough!

    YW

  17. It has been awhile since i made an appearance in the comments but i have read all the posts which i found to be very positive so thank you Yogi and the other guest posters.

As for the game I didnt watch the first 33mins of it as I had more pressing issues (water leakage in the house) to attend to. As many have pointed out in the previous posts we had a load of chances and if Van P would have scored that cracker that hit the inside of the post it would have been match over by then (us being arsenal anything is possible, remember the newcastle 4-4 debacle)? Us getting the three points is far more encouraging.

Alot of positives from the game, Van persie being cap vantastic as usual, I thought Jenks, Gibbs,Mert, Kozzer,Song and Rosicky did very well. Arsha, Benayoun and Santos when they cameon also were very good. Arsharvin even managed a messi-like dribble, if only he’d scored from it.

As for Theo I thought he had a quite game, having not watched most of the first half it took me until the 40th min to notice he was on the pitch. Also Arteta was invisible, when Rosicky came off I was disappointed as i thought Arteta should have come off.

When did Van persie lastly score form a freekick? Him scoring from one yesterday was just what he needed, good for breaking the jink i thought. If by how he celebrated is anything to go by he was also ecstatic. Have we scored any goals from a corner this season? We have too many corners it’s about time we started capitalizing on them. Something else we need to improve on is the rebounds, our players dont seem to be in the box when these opportunities come.

Sunderland weren’t as poor as many would us believe.Happy we won so onto the next game.

  18. Just had an argument with a friend on Song’s contribution – interesting that the stats back up my view that he was erratic in H1 and outstanding in H2. Pass completion
    H1 – 80%
    H2 – 86%
and won 8 out of 9 tackles (excludes a couple of rugby tackles I suspect) of which 7 in H2 when he played deeper and bossed midfield

  19. Szczesny’s mistake came before the sunderland goal, didnt it?

  20. A very pleasing performance from Rosicky, busy, creative and with a turn of speed that we have seen far to infrequently – it augurs well for the next three months til Jack is back.
Also pleased with Jenkinson who after two very difficult appearances at TraffordPark and the Lane had the space and time to play football

  21. great to get the 3 points, defiantly still lacking a bit of composure when we face pressure, but with so many new faces in the team i guess that to be expected. i think we have to go into every match expected to concede at least one to a wonder goal/offside etc at some point too.

disappointed (but perhaps not surprised) that Webb didn’t crack down on their rotational fouling earlier on. according to BBC they finished on 19 fouls and I’m sure on top of that there were several that weren’t given. Arsenal also ended up with 3 yellows (inc Van P’s for the celebration) off just 9 fouls.

  22. Really enjoyed the game, great football on a beautiful autumn day in London. Support within the stadium is changing. Many thousands stayed until the end. The Clock End fans were superb yesterday. Captain’s performance from RvP. He is simply a world class player. But then some of us know that. Great game from Tomas, I have a feeling his day has finally come. Wojciech Szczesny, Carl Jenkinson, Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Andre Santos get a special mention too. Beginning to click, lads.

    Robin van Persie….clickclickclick
    Robin van Persie….clickclickclick

  23. miles

Possible, couldn’t remember at 6am this morning when I typed the majority of this post, the exact sequence of events.

    YW

  24. BOOM!

Lovely stuff. RVP is pure magic.

3 points in the bag. Onto the next. We are going to absolutley murder someone soon. Everything will click. To be honest, I thought bagging in the first 30 seconds would see us kick on and put the game to bed before half time – it wasnt to be, but we got what we deserved.

(worrying how empty the stadium was! hopefully this win and RVP’s form will pull a few more punters in for Stoke)

  25. Frank – Nice to hear more fans stayed till the end. How must it feel if you are chasing the game, only to see the stadium rapidly emptying 10mins before the end of the game?

Agree about RvP as well. A superb player.

  26. arsenal get badley stretched leaving 3 or4 players to cover back would be better for nerves also corners why must there be 5 or 6 in there when arsenal rarely win one anyway 3 would do and surround box and wait for header out vp goaly world class

  27. Still a few season ticket holders not turning up, but fuck em, thats what I say. If they can’t turn up to watch a great game like that on a day like yesterday then we don’t need them.

  28. I am entirely bemused by the many anti-Theo rants since the game. Sure, he may not have been 100% but he was subject to a strategy of rotational fouling that blunted his effectiveness. I also like how, unlike the Man Utd game (memory), he gave young Jenks more support rather than publicly berating him for any errors made on our right flank, rather than taking joint responsibility for defending that area of the pitch.
On that note, how many times did Kieran Richardson make a foray into our final-third? I counted no more than once. Thanks Theo and Jenks.

  29. How was limiting them to only 4 attempts on goal and bossing the midfield unconvincing, SA Gooner?

Johan, we played Song further forward in the first half, something we’ll see more of with Jack and Diaby out. Can’t really compare performances in both halfs, as you say yourself he tended to stay deeper second half, especially when we made changes.

Also thought Rosicky had a great game. Everyone else was solid. Theo did look quiet but I think only because Gervinho was so lively down the left. And Van Persie, phenomenal. You could make one of those show-off YouTube compilation videos based on that perfomance alone.

  30. According to one headline on NewsNow “Tottenham Hotspur big favourites at 5/4 to finish above Arsenal”. Perfect example of a site trolling for hits. 5/4 are now big odds. Wowsa.

  31. shotta, noticed that too. Theo gave Jenks some great support at times.

  32. “SA Gooner

So now, winning is not enough!

    YW”

When it comes to Arsenal, no, it isn’t! We have to win with style and even then there are complaints that we didn’t score enough given all our chances!

Frank, I’d rather they didn’t turn up if all they are going to do is moan. I had the pleasant experience of not hearing even one complaint around me during the game, and I thought the North Bank crowd were doing a good job trying to keep the singing going. Second half the crowd were really urging the team on and almost willing the ball into the net!

  33. The headline on another site, sums up the Sunderland game for me.
“Arsenal killing themselves with inefficient final 3rd play”.
With the quite ridiculous possession we had, a cricket score was not impossible. In the end, however, it was squeaky bum time until Van Persie’s delighful dead ball.
During the game it seemed to me that schoolboy errors have crept in that should have been sorted on the training ground.
Free kicks in the final 1/3rd should not have been blazed miles over the bar.
Professional footballers should be able to keep the ball between the posts.
And we continue to waste crosses and centres because the kicker
(usually Walcott) consistently fails to measure whether there is likely to be a receiver available. Often, it would have been better if he’d gone on, on his own.
All this can be cured by the coaching staff but it sure is taking a long time.

  34. Markus, I agree, but also in H2 Song, having taken the ball deep, was then driving forward and initiating a lot of our best moves. I have no problem with him ending up forward, but he seems to do it better starting from deep – and he is great at breaking up opposition play when they come at him (but poor at tackling form behind when chasing back – his only weakness in my view).

  35. Anyone know about the report that AW says vP refuses to talk about his contract?

Yesterday I thought he was just putting pressure on the board/manager etc. Today it sounds less positive. What is vP up to? What is his rationale anyone?

Here is one possibility. If he signs a four year at 28, at 30 his due to sign another and they can only issue one year so he plays it out to 32. If he waits until he is 29 to sign a four year he can sit and play that one out at 33 or am I too simplistic and hopeful?

  36. All

Sorry I was being ironic with ‘convincing’ post. It was in answer to the moaning. Ha ha (not)

Bit sensitive I know, but read it again in that light.

  37. SA, stop worrying about something you cannnot influence! It will be better for your health and peace of mind. What will be, will be.

  38. Shotta – and you notice its finish above Arsenal thats seems to be the limit of their ambitions not actually getting to the champions league again or winning a pot!!!

Gibbs injured again? Its time for Santos to cement his place at left back so. And with Vermaelen soon to be back but Bac not would Kosser be a better bet to Jenks most games at right back?

    Santos Verm Per Kos
    That could work, no?

Gerv and Theo need to start chipping in with goals or at least look more like scoring than they have recently.

Overall a good result and 3/4 of a good performance. We are getting there though.

  39. SORRY.

    Are you convinced now!

  40. Shotta i admire your protection of Theo, i don’t think anybody is wanting him to fail, the majority actually wants him to succeed but lets be honest yesterday he was very inept.
At the moment i don’t think he gives us enough to warrant a start, more of an impact sub off the bench.
I know this banter about Theo has been going on for quite a while now and is getting a tad boring, but anybody who knows football will understand why there is a massive question mark against him.
When that pace goes and if he constantly gets injured which he does quite frequently that is going to go sooner rather than later, and he will then become a very ordinary player.
I just don’t think he gives us enough !

  41. RVP is staying…………………………………………….until next summer. When we offer him £120k a week and Man City offer him £200k a week.

  42. nicky, I guess you mean Le Groan. Their fare this morning was so horribly negative but what else is there to expect from them? I am not saying hold hands and sing kumbuya and turn a blind eye to the team’s faults but for pete’s sake we just won a match! I hate to shudder what will happen when we do lose a match. Damn if we do, damned if we don’t.

  43. You are hard…too hard.

When will my apology be enough to convince you!

Is it not enough that I apologize, must I do it convincingly, are you so tainted you cannot hear..I’m sorry….etc etc etc

Now swap apologize for ‘win’ et voila!

Just trying to understand the nature of the beast.

  44. SA Gooner

RVP wants 1.Trophies.He has one fa cup winners medal in 7 seven years. That means a guarantee we sign top quality players. The sale of Cesc and Nasri hasnt helped
2.Wages to match what the likes of Rooney Tevez and Ya Ya are on £200k plus a week

  45. DeiseGooner, with Mertesacker looking more and more comfortable, I’d say Koscielny playing a few games at right back is a real possibility when Vermaelen is fully fit. It would be harsh on Jenks to completely replace him there though. Nice to have the option though.

  46. Ilikehowarsenalplay

The commentators never mentioned it, but Rosicky played some killer passes. He played a really good game. Santos was good too. I expected arshaving to loose the ball when he went through 4 defenders when they converged on him. I was surprised the ball was still with him when he went through that traffic. Even though he didnt score, i think those attempts lifted the team to search for a goal with passion.

  47. Markus – i wont say completely replace Jenks. What i feel will help the kid is knowing hes not first choice and its not all on him to hold down a right back spot while arguably the best right back in the league is out. He doesnt need that pressure.

  48. I think RvP on current form is the best striker in Europe.
We needed that win yesterday and thank God we got it.
A few thoughts though.First being that its a bit worrying that despite the overwhelming amount of possession we had in the second half, there were very few clear cut chances created by Arsenal. This was the same pattern at White hart lane.
Also,I’m not sure of what Park has to offer but if RvP gets injured I worry we would really struggle in front of goal.

  49. Jason,

It is hard without some inside story to know what would tempt him other than 1) Barca – going to win, 2) Real – big contenders or 3) ManUre.

I can’t see him going to ManUre (not needed) or an Italian club ( they are no better than arsenal) the only clubs to go to are Barca or Real for a couple of years. They do play over 30 players but I can’t see he will be a real target past the end of his contract date.

The reason he will not go to $hiite-y is that you have to play in Manchester without a red shirt and they are the only option if you want 200k p/week (or Stalingrad and I am not sure which is worse). Since $hiite-y have won next to nothing in that time period (they are just expected to win things now) going there is a double humiliation when they don’t. Suppose like Spuddybayor, you can go and play for the scum after a year, lots of money but what silverware? So that move, until proven otherwise, is just about money, and I think vP is bigger than that.

Easy to say he is going when you look at Ade, Nasri or Clichy , but the former is choking on his greed with nothing more to show for his arrogance, Nasri’s fate maybe similar if he does not get the game time and Clichy may just fade away. I doubt they will win the EPL in the near future and certainly not CL. There are just too many cocks spoiling the brothel in that club, the story is not a happy one.

That does not exclude the twisted logic of the Mr20%s, but I am now wondering what is his game plan unless he is expecting the call from Real or Barca aged 30.

  50. For those who say vP is the best striker in the EPL I have a tendency to agree, I love his touch, but all his statistics have to be spread over half a season. When did he last play more and he is nearing 30?

AW for Didier on a free!

  51. Great win.

Controlled the game against a team in poor form. They barely had any possession or chances of note apart from in that 15 minute period at the end of the 1st half.

Confidence looks a bit shaky, but the way we reacted in the 2nd half is a good sign. As long as we show that determination from now til May we should still have an interesting league campaign.

Can’t wait to get Jack and Tommy V back playing… 2 players we have massively missed. People say we would be fu*ked without Van Persie, well we HAVE been fu*ked without them 2.

  52. SA Gooner

In top form nobody compares to Van Persie. He is the complete striker.

  53. “AW for Didier on
    a free!”

    Very interesting…

  54. Thanks Yogi, great post.

I am happy to walk away with the 3 points, and I think we all should be. That said, I do to tend to think we lack some composure in goal scoring situations and it reflects in the low number of shots on target to shots over all during the game. It maybe that we do miss a second striker, or it maybe that Gervinho and Theo are just hurrying their efforts. I believe our 33% shots on target ratio to shots during the game was one of the lowest percentages again of the weekend. If we could lift this stat a little, maybe we could put some of these teams away a tad earlier :)

  55. I’d rather go for Malouda than Drogba. No chance of either tho. Both over 30 and the wage demands would be rediculous.

  56. Am I the only one that thought that their keeper should have been sent off? On the rebound from RvP’s almost-wonder-goal, Gervinho was going to get to the rebound, and the keeper basically clotheslined him.

  57. Also think the Van Persie contract situation has more to do with Wenger than money. If Wenger stays beyond his current contract so will VP. I’m hoping.

  58. Did anybody notice Rosicky when Laarson hit the free kick? He didn’t even turn around as he knew it was a goal as soon as it went past him. Great to see two top quality free kicks in the game (only great as we won ;) ).

  59. DD wage demands made more possible because over 30 and free!

  60. End of time analysis showed that TR7 did exactly the same thing a few ago. They were criticizing him for not being ready to defend a rebound off the free kick. The question was does he know it is going in or is that his usual reaction to facing any kick.

  61. Yogi another top post:

My favorite part. “this is the fifth consecutive home win; by the time we visit Stamford Bridge in a fortnight’s time, that could be eight in all competitions. That is the beginning of a run. Throw in an away result or two and by the end of November, a head of steam can be built.”

We really need to maintain our home form especially next week against Stoke. Points at Stamford Bridge may be a bridge to far but hopefully we get a good performance. After that the schedule (at least on paper) eases a bit and hopefully we can throw in a road win or 2 and keep moving up the table. We gained 2 points on both the scousers and the spuds so this was a good weekend.

    Markus @ 1:25:

RVP is the best striker in the league and one of the best in the world. I am sure he and Darren Dein can look around and see what other players who are no where close to his level are making. This is his last chance for a big pay day. Its going to take a very large wage package to keep him.

  62. Andy, Rosicky did the same thing vs United. They even showed a replay and said it was bizarre behaviour. I’d have to agree. If it came off the post or was saved spectacularly it could have fallen to anyone. Not even turning around to see where the ball goes just seems odd to me.

  63. He had a good game though. That was the best I have seen him play in a long while. I was suprised when he was taken off to be honest. It was good to see one of our senior players try and take the game by the scruff of he neck and for ce our tempo.

  64. Road to recovery win so it’s all good. I’m not kidding myself though because that was only Sunderland.

What was Theo actually doing yesterday? There were two occasions where Arteta, had the ball just inside our half and he was waiting for Theo, to get on his bike but, he was just jogging behind him on the wing looking to play some sort of one two. Seriously looked like he didn’t have a clue and when he had their defender square on he kept stopping and turning back when all he needed to do was knock it into open space and you know the rest.

    Where was Oxo yesterday?

  65. Theo really needs to start performing. For the 1st time in his Arsenal career he can claim to be 1st choice, but he is not cementing his place. If somebody else gets a chance there and plays well he is going to find himself on the bench again.

  66. He had a great game. That midfield trio looks good together.

  67. Walcott made some good defensive contributions and towards the end of the match did some good things going forward. Could it be possible that he was told to be a little more cautious with his attack, to cover Jenks?

    Geez!

  68. Paul, Jenks looked ok to me the way he handled certain situations but, this was while we were on the breakaway so need for him to be trying to cover Jenks. I just thought his overall play was woeful as did the other 30+ Gooners in the bar where I watching it from but, they much more stronger views than mines.

I was thinking that Theo, would of really showed us this season what he can do but, I don’t what’s stopping him from using his greatest asset.

  69. I just read that Arshavin 100% passing accuracy. Nice!

  70. Paul – Maybe. But that does not explain why he still can’t run with the ball with any control at all. And a number of times when Jenkinson needed an out ball down the line, Theo had drifted infield giving him no options.

  71. If Rosicky, uses that performance as his standard setter then he will be special for us this season. Few more games and he will be there proper.

  72. That’s what had me puzzled with Theo. It looked like he wasn’t thinking about what he bwas doing or supposed to be doing. Running onto balls into space and over the top is where he kills defenders.

  73. bill,

    Please!

Every week every single EPL player walks on the field it is massive pay day for them. (more than I make in a year x 52 etc etc)

If you had written ‘a more massiver’ pay day it might be somewhat excusable, but that would undermine the argument.

  74. Well GA, that is not true, he can run with the ball and has scored some impressive goals slong with some great assists doing it. He may still need work but give the young man the credit due him.

Could it be possible that they are just not on the same page as yet?

Anyway, when we watch a game, we usually take the few bad things to form our opinion. Especially with Walcott to me, he gets too much grief in my opinion.

  75. Overall midfield-wise I thought the fresh legs (and heads?) made a big difference. We looked dominant for the first 30 and then ran out legs or ideas.

With so many options there, we can change it all at half time and bomb a team like Sunderland as they tire.

  76. All the young man needs is consistency, that to me will come in time. All players dont mature at the same rate.

  77. How is it that Theo gets criticised while Gareth Bale gets awards? Look at their stats for last season!

  78. Granted about the consistency and Theo looks the business when he does find it but, seeing how Chamberlain has played when he has been allowed it makes Theo’s bad games stand out like a sore thumb.

  79. Paul-N

Anyone email that link to Theo? That’s the sort of boost he could do with. Excelllent

  80. Markus,

    Is it coz I is…….Arsenal?

  81. Paul – When he is running with the ball it is 50/50 if he is going to leave it behind, or simply run it out of play. All that said, his stats for goals and assists stands up well so he has his qualities. It seems that it needs to be a case of the team getting him into the right area’s rather than just giving him the ball.

  82. Goonerton, as I stated all players dont mature at the same pace, also all players are not as good with the ball as others. But with that, we shouldnt beat the young man over the head every time he has a poor game.
He will come good, he is a very good player that has MUCH room for improvement, think about that.

  83. GA, thats a good point about putting him through in the best areas for him.

To be honest, he frustrates the heck out of me at times BUT he is a very special player. I look forward to him being a great leader in our team for years to come.

  84. Paul – Don’t get me wrong. As much as anybody I want him to play well, and has been mentioned he is still pretty young. He can be so frustrating to watch sometimes though, struggling to complete the most basic footballing techniques at times. He is almost an anti-Wenger type of player. But, if the team can engineer certain situations he can be deadly.

  85. His career has been blighted by injuries also, so he has not been able to mature at a normal rate. In the past, everytime he was on form some idiot made a horrible challenge on the poor young man.

  86. Paul – Heh, you sound like Ray Wilkins :)

  87. Paul N – I salute your defence of Theo. He is always jumped upon as soon as he doesn’t skin the whole team and slot it in (a la Henry) or when he doesn’t whip in a perfect cross. He has been playing out of position since he’s been an arsenal player, so it is unsurprising that his crossing isn’t perfect. He has blistering pace, which means it is easy for your legs to be going faster than your average footballer’s brain. He isn’t the best player in the world, he never will be, but he is top quality and would get into almost all Prem teams. With some more clickage and the right service, he is an absolute nightmare for defenders to play against. He will get plenty of goals and assists, no matter what. He has improved every year, his finishing is excellent at times. Get off the poor young lad’s back. He’s still only 22 (23?) which is incredibly young for someone who has played so much football at the top level. He will continue to improve for the next 3-5 years at least, so there’s plenty more to come from him.

I thought Rosicky was excellent. Some brilliant running and top top quality passing, opening up their defence like a certain little spaniard… Mert is getting better every game as was expected, Santos was very good technically, some great passing. Song was great in attack and defence. Chezney, well he made up for his rush of blood earlier on with one of the best saves i’ve seen in a long time. His interview afterwards was brilliant too! He said something along the lines of: “The save was ok, but the finish was poor, you need to be scoring from 3 yards out!” love it! And he played it down, cos it was more like 1 yard out… He then went on to say that it was all about RvP’s performance. Very humble, and a bit cheeky. I love chezzer more and more every match.

  88. Gareth is brilliant though. He is as anonymous as theo in many more matches and was very inconsistent last year. He was far, far worse than thep last year actually and Lennon!! Omg dont even get me started. Hes deffo worse! But everybody loves lennon and bale is after all a welsh wizard! But he ain’t even close to be good enough to be welsh captain. He is infact another great Arsenal player…

  89. Geo – Agree on Szchezny. He really looks the part. I am sure due to his inexperience he will make a few gaffs, but it does not seem like it with bother him, and he more than makes up for it with some of the saves he makes.

Santos does look a very good footballer, and I prefer him to Gibbs at full back. He is very phyisical, and for the first time in a long while we have a left back we wins plenty in the air. For me, he does not yet seem to be part of the back 4 unit when he plays (I don’t know why, it just seems that way to me), but that should come with games.

  90. Nice video OOU. Hope his substitution was simply because he was exhausted. Looks likely from that video. Liked that move at 7:00, where Theo held the full-back and Jecks got in behind. Pity about the final delivery from him.

  91. Andy, that’s the difference I think between a good GK and a great one (he will become a great one). The ability to shrug off a mistake and learn from it, rather than be worried and jittery about making the same mistake again, it’s a fine line. I am looking forward with great anticipation about his arsenal career. It’s very rare to see a GK perform the way he is at such a young age. Imagine how good he could be at the age of 30…

And i agree about Santos. He looks good in the air, and is fairly strong too, something we haven’t had at LB since Winterburn..! I know what you’re saying about his defensive alignment with the team, but this will come after more playing time. With him, TV5, Mert/Kos and Sagna (when he’s back), that’s a very strong looking back line.

  92. Yeah Markus, I think a lot of his best displays last season were overlooked, but Sunday’s was on a whole other level – hope it’s the start of something with him. I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep him down to no more than a match a week though, given his past. Really like CJ in the second half yesterday – in his few games at Charlton he was one of those marauding full-backs, and I think we’ve just seen that for the first time.

  93. Exactly Geo! Re: Walcott.

Santos, looked really good. Nothing seems to bother him and he is always calm on the ball. Tricky and dangerous. I like his style of play, for real. An Excellent buy.

  94. I am impressed by Carl Jenkinson’s ability to cross the ball and even more impressed that he can do it just as well with either foot.

  95. 473 comments yesterday,, puts to bed the fallacy that people only come on here after a loss.

  96. …lol…perhaps the Arsenal fans are the “Unconvincibles”?

    …sorry that was awful…

  97. Limestonegunner

I love Chezzer and his confident leadership. His inexperience does lead to some mistakes, but we can live with that for all the counterbalancing positives. One thing I did notice though was that the defense was slightly more nervous after that moment for a while and that Chezzer’s kicking was less assured. Last year he had some difficulties here which he has obviously worked on, but some of those jittery passes and clearing kicks resurfaced at points which I hadn’t seen this season.

As far as how Fabianski must feel, I think he is technically very good but he had several big games where bad judgment cost Arsenal before his good run last season when he seemed on the path to cementing himself as first choice GK until his unfortunate injury. However, I have seldom seen him command his area and exercise the qualities of vocal leadership and confidence that Chezzer does. For some reason, that just seems to be what you want or expect from a GK, so Chezzer gets more of a pass perhaps because we expect him to recover from such a mistake but have seen Fabianski get a run of shaky performances after a big mistake until last season. Obviously, he must feel frustrated that he lost his position despite playing very well when he had a chance for a run of games. I hope he stays because he is a quality option to have behind Chezzer.

  98. @lime it will be hard for Fabianski though, aparantly we got a nother great keeper in the pipleline atm. hes called Martinez, we also got mannone.
I belive a Polish national keeper cannot afford to sit on the bench, not even in a big club like Arsenal.
The two other mentioned keepers are still young and have time on their side to sit and wait for some years. Fabianski however is nearing the age where a keeper really wants to play and not be a backup. Plus he has a national team spot to think about.
It would be a weird show of ambition if he did stay when Chezzer cements his placye…

  99. I would just like to say thank fook we have a proper keeper now this kid will save us 10-15 points a season.

My team for Marseilles, especially after his heroics on Sunday I wouldn’t leave out rosicky

    ————–RVP
    Gervinhio, Rosicky, Theo
    ———-Arteta, Song
    Santos, Mert, Kos, Jenks
    ————Chezza

  100. its almost weird that suga is not here today. Being a “mensa” menber and everything, this would be a perfect moment to show off your intelligence….

“473 comments yesterday,, puts to bed the fallacy that people only come on here after a loss.”

    Ha ha. Good point.

  102. Warnock said he thinks that RVP’s turn and chip shot that hit the post, was the best bit of football he has seen all season.

“473 comments yesterday,, puts to bed the fallacy that people only come on here after a loss.”

    Ha ha. Good point.

Not really 375 of them were me and poodle

  104. You got to look at the names dude, numbers alone means nothing when it comes to the blog sphere.
if i write 100 posts with one letter in it it will surly increas the amount of posts on this page. but it does not increase the number of post(ers), just the number of post(s)

  105. Hopefully Theo will continue to improve. He has shown some signs over the past couple of years. He is only 22 and some players are late bloomers. Certainly it would be stupid to give up on him at this point. He would do well to learn some poaching skills.

    SAgooner @ 2:47:

    Pleeeease:

Since when does the real world and the amount of money that you and I make have anything to do with what footballers are paid. What they make is obscene but thats the reality of professional sport.

  106. Bill, congrats on the Rangers.

  107. There were only a few of s yesterday ,but we were very happy and talked a lot.Plus most of the posts are made during the match

If Fabianski or Big AL. had come running out like a demented Ed Moses we would never have heard the last of it from our goalkeeping experts(giggles behind his hand). It would no doubt also have resulted in a goal.Sometimes being lucky is better than being good.

  108. “People only come on here after a loss” is plainly a fallacy. There are always people on here.

Sadly though, “some people only come on here after a loss” and “some people only come on here to moan whether it’s after a win or after a loss” both have the irresistible ring of truth.

  109. Hi everybody,Good description of hopefully the platform needed to get some momentum. The point you made about fabianski. I thought at the time when Chez came running off his line, how there was no mention from any of the commentary team. I have to think that finaly, as far as the media is concirned we now have a goal keeper who is considered to be up to the standard, which apparenlty only the media are able to tell. Thank God for that. Maybe as players return , and the january sales then we will convince some that actualy, no matter who is seen to be at fault, that we have had to start again and that the signs are there to have some belief in where we go from here 3 points

  110. People are saying that Thomas was unlucky to get hooked.
Well I think he might just have done his full shift and Yossythegoon was a fresh pair.I dont think it was because Wenger wanted to change things.
He was brilliant but 90 mins after a lay of and an international tweek may have been beyond him,

  111. Paul N

Thanks. Very very excited. I was there Saturday night and last year when we beat the Yankees and winning the pennant in your own park is special. Most baseball fans around here have been moribund for many many years and its a lot of fun to see whats happening now. Last year I think the teams was so happy to get to the World Series that the moment overwhelmed us. I hope this year is different.

  112. Its not the lack of raw ability that causes me to despair of Theo sometimes, it is his lack of initiative in forcing himself into a game when he finds himself on the periphery.

Fair enough at 16-17-18 a youngster can expect to be frozen out of a game by a cunning defender, and sometimes his own colleagues wont find his range

But by this stage, 200 games in, Theo should be imposing himself into the game, roaming to capture the ball, upending the opposition if required. If you have not got the ball son go and bloody get it.

Having said that he worked hard on Sunday and it was a relief to see him and Jenkinson apparently working well together

At 22 he has time, but it is a finite commodity

  113. Hopefully this weekend and next weekend against the demonic thugs from Stoke will be the start of a good run for us. If we can keep our form at home and get some points against the lower table teams on the road we can be in 6th place by Christmas.

  114. I think we will be in 4th by Xmas.

  115. “Warnock said he thinks that RVP’s turn and chip shot that hit the post, was the best bit of football he has seen all season.”

It was, and if it win in it would’ve been a legendary goal like Denise Bergkamp’s goal against New Castle

    *******
Fallacy from “Gunner”jones there, George – it’s more like 650+ when we lose and GJ and Suga get together for a whine-fest

  117. George @ 6:41:

Thats a stretch but not impossible. Would require a lot of help from the spuds, scousers and even from the bar codes although I don’t expect the latter to be around the top near at the end of the year. We don’t play any of them again until later in the season.

  118. I think a lot of the reason why guys like Gervinho and Walcott come in and out of games so often is just a lack of understanding with a midfield that is still not firing on all cylinders yet. The wide front men need to feel confident that the ball will find them if they make a run, and they also need to know when to pull into the midfield to pick the ball up to feed an overlapping run.

I think a lot of this inconsistency from Walcott and Gervinho will be solved when we have a solid midfield three that is finally playing consistently with each other.

  119. Very interesting article on the arsenal.com player (free) regarding the new medical facility just opened at Colney. I remember talk about how we should be looking to america for the way they do things in the NFL, NBA etc with regards our training and injury management. Seems the club have been doing just that.

“473 comments yesterday,, puts to bed the fallacy that people only come on here after a loss.”

“Ha ha. Good point. Not really 375 of them were me and poodle”

Ha ha, an even better point :)

  121. I am led to believe Andrei had 100% pass completion yesterday.
I have been advocating him to be used behind Robin and relieved of any defensive duties for over a year now .My fear though was that he would give the ball away to often. But yesterday ,when we were trying to see the game out.he never lost the ball at all.Which tells me that he can play possession football when the mood takes him .Therefore I now feel even more strongly that he should be moved inside.
I must be missing something though because Le Boss has different ideas :(

  122. Bill,I also think we will have more clean sheets come May than any other team.

  123. George @ 7:18:

“Bill,I also think we will have more clean sheets come May than any other team.”

Shame on you, trying to get me wound up with a comment like that. It would have worked a year or 2 ago. (little smiley face)

If you really believe that one then please send me a little bit of whatever you are smoking in your pipe. Fedex ships overnight.

  124. When our team is settled we will have more clean sheets. For what it is worth we are level with Chelsea, United have one more than we do and City 2, as far as clean sheets. All things considered, not too bad.

  125. Limestonegunner

George, indeed a good point. In the past I have argued alongside you that despite giving the ball away, Arshavin does so in the effort to make things happen in the last third of the pitch so these were high risk and high reward passes and could be tolerated. Clearly, he also knows how to keep possession as well. I thought he looked very bright and inventive yesterday, unlucky not to get a goal and assist out of his efforts. I think away in Europe is a perfect time to start him and he is most dangerous when he is in the centre and can roam around a bit where the play takes him. He will do enough defensively if all he needs to do is attack the ball near him and press high up the pitch. What he is never going to do is patrol the wing, as apparently Walcott did in protecting Jenks. If Arshavin was playing ahead of him, Jenks would had a solo battle on his hands!

I don’t know if he should start, but I think he needs more minutes and in the right area. Gervinho had a great assist, but he fades in games from what I have seen this season–perhaps he is still adapting too–Arshavin could replace him earlier but I’d rather see him come into the centre.

  126. @ YW

Totally off-topic but in a way always relevant to us…

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/medical-centre-opens-at-training-ground

Weren’t you saying a while ago that you thought we ought to have something like this? Ta-daa!

  127. Bugger me they’ve got an anti-gravity treadmill for people with broken legs to exercise on! So no more sitting around eating Pringles and watching Loose Women and Judge Judy for six weeks then…

  128. I was watching that Rosicky video above and saw Richardson commit three fouls on Theo that held up his runs. That’s three fouls on Theo in an eight minute clip featuring Rosicky. I’m sure if we were to watch a Theo v Sunderland clip it would be nothing but shirt tugs and obstructions.

From what I saw yesterday I think that Arteta needs to step it up. I think he has been playing a bit tentatively because he doesn’t want to make mistakes. I’ve seen him play a lot and he has it in him to dominate a midfield like very few players can. I mean, he pretty much kept Everton at the top end of the table by himself for the past few years.

  129. Limestonegunner

Gains, I agree with that on Arteta. He is a quality player with PL experience and so needs to assert himself more. I hope Marseille away could be his break out game. He’s had time to get comfortable and this is a big fixture in Europe.

  130. Lime, I thought Gervinho suffered from what Theo suffered yesterday. A lack of service from midfield. The few times our midfielders got the ball to him he was dangerous and even got an assist off a very clever play from Rosicky. I can’t wait to see him and Theo play with a proper midfield maestro, be it Jack or Arteta with the handbreak finally off.

  131. Lime, it seems like the pressure to perform for a top team has inhibited him thus far. Our poor form hasn’t helped on that front either, but the guy has everything in him to be a star for us.

  132. And it will mean they can do last-minute deadline-day medicals at the club. They’ve got every piece of testing and rehabilitation equipment known to man. AW said money no object, apparently.

  133. Gains.I agree about Arteta.More to come .If Andrei was moved he could sit deeper along with Song and control the game from there.

  134. FG that must be where JJ’s missing millions went

  135. Limestonegunner

Yes, that’s a pretty fair point. It has been a problem even for RvP being occasionally isolated, despite the goals he has been scoring. The midfield hasn’t yet found itself, but I did think yesterday they played well generally. Song was immense and Rosicky looked very fluid in movement and inventive with the ball. It is just that they aren’t always finding Gervs and Theo in the best positions. I remember a ball Song played through into the box right of goal but Theo was in space closer to the right top corner and hadn’t broken diagonally like he sometimes does.

At any rate, I don’t want to suggest that Arteta has been subpar–actually he has more effective attacking passes than the other midfield partners. It is just that he seems like he could be taking things in hand more. 7amkickoff had a good paragraph on his play that shows it is better than many might think, statistically. http://www.7amkickoff.com/2011/arsenal-2-1-sunderland-the-good-bad-and-ugly/#comments

  136. @ pedantic george
    ha ha
Not to mention the “missing” ambition.

  137. The Brain has had some interesting comments, posts, diagrams with arrows pointing here and there and everywhere over on Arsenal Column about this RVP false nine malarky.

I think with Na$ri gone, the ‘middle’ will be less crowded during games, so Arshavin (and the other wide forwards) can wander about even mores. There was a brief glimmer of something interesting on that left side betwixt Santos and Andrei. Maybe it was because they were both fresh off the bench and Andrei did not have a stich? I don’t know.
    -
And saw an interview with Arteta saying he prefered to play at the apex and not in the ‘pivot’. Could be mistaken. Where would he play wth Wilshere back? Ahead of JW? Will JW return to last seasons position? Interesting times ahead.

  138. Just re-viewed the highlights. Ah, Robin. Suffice it to say that I will be having his children, whether he likes it or not.

  139. Paul N:

I think our defense will get better when TV comes back and we get settled. Wojo makes a huge difference I think. Georges idea tha we lead the league in clean sheets is may be a bit to much to hope for this season but you never know.

  140. Fun – “And it will mean they can do last-minute deadline-day medicals at the club. They’ve got every piece of testing and rehabilitation equipment known to man. AW said money no object, apparently.”

    Heh, the irony.

  141. @ goonerandy
    “Heh, the irony.”

    What do you mean?

  142. Bill, On current standing there is nothing outlandish about what George is saying. If a defense that has been changed so much can be so close in clean sheets, then why not?

  143. Fun – Not a dig at you (lost in net speak maybe) :)

Ironic as in a money no object stance for a facility to but new players (where Arsene is perceived as a tightwad).

  144. Paul – Come on; this team could achieve lots. But they have given no indication whatsoever that they will turn into the tightest defensive unit in the lge. Pretty much the opposite at the moment. What George said is a tad outlandish.

  145. @ Goonerandy
Yes, I thought that was it. Well, he’s not a tightwad. It’s all about value for money. Happy to spend squillions on machines if they work, or to spend £35 million on a player if he’s good enough. If not, not.

  146. @ finsbury
If AA had scored and Robin’s Bergkamp moment had come off as well, those two would have been fighting it out for Goal of the Season.

  147. GA, it can be outlandish to you all you want. On current form, as poor defensively as we have been, we are only 2 clean sheets off the pace.

    It is quite possible.

  148. Fun – I have never he was.

    Paul – OK then.

  149. Fun – I meant I have never said he was. Stupid keyboard.

  150. Paul N @ 8:32:

Its hard to look at the last 5 years of history and have any confidence that we can put together a consistent run of top of the table defense for a full season. Your optimism allows you to ignore statistics and trends that my curmudgeonism does not. However, you are certainly correct to say that it is theoretically possible.

  151. There is no evidence now, and nor has there been for a good number of years that we are about to turn into some sort of defensive mean machine. I really don’t see where somebody would get that from to be honest.

  152. Well it stimulated the conversation ,did it not Andy my man?. :)

  153. History is history.

3 clean sheets is what matters so now.

GA and Bill, you both can stay in the past. I expect us to get better, as always.

  154. Thanks for the link FG
I found Colin Lewin’s words interesting, about the fact that our injury situation is no worse than many other clubs. He referred to some UEFA study that showed we were ‘mid-table’ on the injuries front.

  155. “Rosicky caused fury among the Arsenal fans by starting his walk to the halfway line with his back to goal for the restart without even turning around to see if the ball had actually gone in. He did the same when Wayne Rooney struck with a free-kick against the Gunners in August and even appeared to laugh as soon as Larsson struck the goal-bound effort.

“That wasn’t a laugh – it was a desperate laugh that such a screamer would be scored again. I don’t have to turn around,” Rosicky said. “When I see his face and he is celebrating, why should I turn around? I have been here six years and anyone who thinks I would laugh at that… for people to take it that way is frankly unbelievable.”

What is frankly unbelievable is that fans are actually asking questions about it!!!

  156. Bill, is 3 clean sheets this season a stat?

We have a new team and new defenders, why should I dump the past on the now team? Heck no!

If out past wholely determines our future, then we should expect nothing from Arsenal.

  157. I love Thomas Rosicky. In a manly way of course.

  158. Continuing from my last post; this basically means our medical staff are not as hopeless as some would have us believe.
It also gives less credence to injuries as an excuse for the squad’s performances in the last few seasons.
On the other hand we have had quite few serious impact injuries (Diaby, Eduardo, Ramsey), which is more than I can recall any other team having. Then again, at the time we lost them, these players weren’t particularly major influences.

  159. george are you calling wenger a liar??

  160. Paul N,
You’ve heard the phrase “..don’t expect too much, but hope for the best”?

  161. I dont think so JJ .why what do you mean?

  162. Henristic ,its not so much the number of injuries more the key nature of the personnel we lose and the timing of the said losses.

  163. “What is frankly unbelievable is that fans are actually asking questions about it!!!”

George, I don’t think fans are questioning it, it’s just the media trying to make a negative out of something in order to undermine the club. I was at the game, didn’t even notice and I also knew that was a goal from the moment Arteta needlessly gave away the handball. That was much more of an issue to me, yet it has hardly merited a word.

  164. George re Arshavin, it’s interesting that he says Russia’s qualification for the Euro’s has lifted a weight from his shoulders. I think as Russia’s captain and given their struggles in qualifying he has obviously been weighed down by that responsibility. Hopefully, yesterday is just the start for a newly rejuvinated Arshavin, which will greatly benefit AFC!

  165. Passenal,I know. How do these players not know that it is stupid to make such mistakes.
I remember Andrei giving away one near the corner flag the led to a goal.Even the best of them seem stupid from time to time

  166. George,
How could we ever know that the personnel/timing of injuries is worse for us than any other team?

  167. I love Andrei Arshavin,in a manly way of course.

  168. Bradys right foot

I dont know whats more amazing the fact that we have an anti gravity treadmill or that we scored from a freekick.

  169. Henristic ,you are right ,we dont know that .It just seems that way,Long term to Cesc,Robin ,Tommy V,last year.Perhaps our 3 most influential players.
But you are right .I dont actually know.So I stand corrected

  170. Henristic, so you want me to have low expectations of Arsenal?

a weh di blow wow ah gwaan?!

  171. George, of course all players make mistakes, but it seems strange to criticise a player for walking away after a goal has been scored and not mentioning the mistake that led to the goal scoring opportunity in the first place.

  172. Pass,I am with you there .I was just saying that their stupidity is almost beyond belief sometimes.

  173. well you keep banging on about jj’s missing millions

yet wenger specifically told us all that its not about the money, its about the quality..if he found a player worth 40mil he would pay it..

which means he has at least 40mil dont it??? so the money is there isnt it?? unless hes lying..

  174. Paul – Nobody is saying that you should wallow in the past; but you have to base your opinions on something. Otherwise you would just be making things up. Unless of course, that is what you are doing.

  175. Did you see the Diaby fitness machine?

  176. Diaby will still manage to sustain an impact injury on the new anti gravity treadmill.

  177. Lol JJ I get you now.
Well there is money .Its there and can be used .But you said it disappears never to be seen again.Hence “JJ’s missing millions”

  178. Bradys right foot

TR7 has been at the Arsenal long enough to know that the Larson would score a screamer. His reaction was born out of the increduality of some of the goals that we have suffered. The 2011-12 reel already contains Walker, Perisic,Young, Rooney and Larson. Maybe Im paranoid but ffs from Essiens bullet against Jens to that Bryl creamed turd Bentley and his only footballing reference point of note to the one hit wonder Danny Rose, like TR7 if you’ve been around Arsenal long enough you would just know Larson was scoring. TR7 was fantastic on Sunday and his attitude was first class.

  179. Bill, You behaved as if George must be on a high to say what he say said. To that my response was that currently we are comparable to the best defensive records in the PL teams regarding clean sheets so far this season. When you look at how “poor” we have been defending, that stat is quite impressive.

  180. haha well it dont get seen.
it just keeps getting added to..

    which is all im questioning..

anyway i quite like the phrase jj’s missing millions..has a ring to it..

and id rather talk about robin..hes the man at the minute..closest thing we are gonna get to the iceman..he needs to stay..im happy that hes committed to the club but until he extends his contract that committment could just be to honour his current one..

  181. That is a terrible sentence!

    This is better.

To that my response was that currently we are comparable to the best defensive records in the PL, regarding clean sheets.

  182. I love Robin,in a manly way of course

  183. the clean sheet stat is pretty much a useless one at this minute paul to be honest..

theres also a stat that shows weve got one of the worst defensive records in the league..3rd worst,,clean sheets or not..our goal difference is still negative..

if we have no clean sheet and conceed one goal per game we have conceeded less than chelsea at this stage..rather take that to be honest..

  184. Paul – “When you look at how “poor” we have been defending, that stat is quite impressive.”

Clean sheets at home to Bolton, Swansea, and Newcastle? Sure signs that we have sorted the defensive issues which have blighted us for years. I admire your optimism Paul, but it is based on a whim and no more.

We look brittle and likely to concede whenever a team can put us under any sustained amount of pressure. That does not bode well for loads of clean sheets I am afraid

Diaby will still manage to sustain an impact injury on the new anti gravity treadmill.

    lol

I can see the headlines now Diaby invents new injury on anti gravity tread mill.

Full time sports injury sufferer and part time footballer Abou Diaby 26 from Medical room A, London Colney has suffered another injury setback. Diabys muscles reactled badly to an absence of gravity. Fellow full time sports injury sufferer Kieron Dyer said, “Diabys always breaking new ground he’s an inspiration. The anti-grav could be the new metatarsal.”

  186. We look brittle and likely to concede whenever a team can put us under any sustained amount of pressure.

    at the moment!!

  187. and rosicky did look sharp yesterday
    best game in 3 years..impressive..

as was AA..good to see them both looking sharp..

think artetas getting a tough deal..hes been good so far this season. had an average game yesterday but to be fair he needs runners and our widemen spent most of the match picking their noses and scratching their arses..set pieces let him down though

  188. hahahahaha! so van glass ankles saved cuntene and his pussies yesterday. doesn’t matter, they’re still overpaid shit. and cuntene is still a ridiculously laughable clown. you better just be glad I wasn’t the opposition manager or one of the opposition players. I would have been mocking and laughing at van glass ankles for being in that team of shit managed by that asshat clown. lot of good it does him. he ain’t signing that new contract and he ain’t winning shit this year, hahahahahahahaha! and how fucking shit were the mackems, jesus fucking christ. I can’t believe how stupid some of these opposition managers are, it would be so easy to motivate their teams if they just played heavily on hatred of that piece of shit cuntene cuntger. let’s see what cuntene and his overpaid summer dance camp trainees do against Marseille and Chelsea. i’m looking forward to some prime laughs. hahahahahaha! now go put on your diaby mask and shave your pubic hair so you’re ready for cuntene to fondle you. hahahahahaha!

  189. George – We have looked like that (more than not) for a good while now. It can’t be down to personnel as I think we have good defenders, so must be down to team setup. So I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

  190. Paul:

We have not been able to find any sort of defensive consistency over the course of a season for 5 -6 years. Saying we have 3 clean sheets in 8 and predicting a season of good defending from that stat is pretty weak logic given our past history. We have to keep a lot more then 3 clean sheets in 8 games before anyone with even an ounce of skepticism. I think bringing in Mert is a huge move in the right direction and Wojo is another. Hopefully we will learn some consistency but we are a very long way from having that atm.

  191. Bradys right foot

    JonJon | October 17, 2011 at 10:40 pm

JJ i’d rather have the most clean sheets in the league at the end of the season as unrealistic as that sounds at the minute. We will improve thats a fact, I don’t think the centre halves are too bad at the minute. Merts looking better and better and gaining confidence, Kozzer was great at the weekend and TV5 has to enter the fray.

We are vunerable in transition when we loose the ball because of our high line and the numbers we commit going forward. I’ve always maintained that our defenders have to do an awful lot of defending one on one but that is mitigated by our retention of the ball. The signs against Sunderland pointed to a team that while not exactly getting its mojo back were capable of holding onto the ball.

  192. gotta be a chav

  193. JJ, clean sheet stats can never be useless, that doesnt make sense.

  194. Brf – “I’ve always maintained that our defenders have to do an awful lot of defending one on one but that is mitigated by our retention of the ball.”

An excellent point. We often leave our defence very exposed, and I have long maintained that the gap between our midfield and defenders is far too great when we lose the ball. We are simply not a compact team. Now it could be argued that this is due to our attacking play, but we rarely outscore the like of Manure or Chelsea over a season so something is fundamentally wrong there.

  195. anyone care to explain how wrinkly voyeur’s comment actually made it through moderation?

  196. it does make sense when youve conceeded 17 goals in 8 games, youve lost 4 of them and your gd is -5
at this stage the 3 clean sheets dont mean that much..
against the poorer strikers we get away with it against the good strikers we get fucked..
    thats all it shows
    at this stage..

  197. arshavin looked like a different player. hopefully theres more of it to come.

song was outstanding. gave away a few unnecessary ‘tactical fouls’, but was overall brilliant.

jenkinson made that mistake in the first half, but did very well to come back. remember that bit of skill to keep the ball on the touchline? and he’s quite a good crosser.

arteta is playing a bit within himself at the moment. just doing the minimum. i am not worrying about it, because he will find his form soon.

santos is just so adventurous going forward. anyone fancy gibbs and santos starting together on the left flank?

  198. yeah brf id rather have the most clean sheets at the end of the season but after years of watching basic defenders errors and then watching the start to this season it a tad optimistic to think that will be the case come the end of this..

the only fact is that it has to improve..
the juries still out on whether it will…

  199. Well the one bit of hope is Wengers teams do have one thing in common and that is they always progress. so we should see improvement.

  200. JJ 17 in 8 bad
but is 9 in 7 that bad?

Per is a world class defender (80 caps proves that @ age 26) Tommy is really good.Kos is good and getting better but none have played together enough to form any partnerships. So why should we not expect a huge improvement.

  201. tactical fouls are always neccessary..
songs job is to break up the play if that means fouls than so be it..
fletchers made a career out of it..got no problem with song doing it..although he does make the holding midfielder role look sexy..top player..even if he does wear gloves..

only issue i have with song is bombing forward too much and trying to be playmaker..hes got good control and hes clever on the ball but that final pass aint his business he should be back waiting in case it breaks down..and wearing gloves.. :)

    other than that top class..

and yeah jenks has a mean cross..helps if we have someone on the end of it though..

  202. evening george.

  203. regarding clean sheets. we will know at the end of the season. same thing goes for many of the things being discussed here right now.

personally, i am not thinking too much about other stuff rather than the next game. then the one after that. one game at a time. then we see.

marseille, chelsea, marseille will be a test of character. i hope my belief will be vindicated.

  204. George – “but is 9 in 7 that bad?”

More than a goal a game. So you could kiss goodbye to us having the best clean sheet record if we continue in that vein.

  205. my only issue with song is his gloves. what a big girl. its fukin hot for october.

  206. im not saying not to expect it george..
im just saying the juries still out, which it is..dont think anyone would disagree with that
weve had top defenders before..never stopped us from conceeding shed loads and being shit at set pieces did it???
its just the way we play..

and its ok keeping clean sheets, but just remember we have to score..
    id rather take a 2-1 than a 0-0..

  207. And I for one am happy that Song is committing “tactical fouls”. A few years ago hardly any of our players did this, and we got stung a number of times when we lost the ball. It shows he is learning.

  208. JJ. i have nothing against tactical fouls. i just thought there was one or two occasions in which there was no need to foul the player, because there was no danger. at least that was how i saw it. sunderland were still rather deep in their own half, and we had players behind. thats why i wrote ‘tactical fouls’ rather than tactical fouls.

and yeah, usually i am not in favour of song bombing forward. but it worked out fine on sunday.

  209. we kept a clean sheet v newcastle but got 1 point
we conceeded yesterday but got all three

    which is more important??

  210. just to add on: i am concerned about unnecessary yellow cards.

but then again, looking at the refereeing, we dun have to do much to get yellow cards anyway. dun really get how we can have the same number of yellow cards as sunderland.

  211. to be fair mate i thought song should have been carded for one of the fouls yesterday..but the card he did get was soft so it evened out..

  212. I hate it when we just get too tight behind an give away pointless fouls.Song does it a lot.

  213. As long as we win matches it does not matter about clean sheets and the like (although they are nice and give the side confidence). The point is that we hamstring ourselves so often by bad team defending, individual errors, and simply being too easy to score against when we don’t have possession.

  214. well, the game is over, and we got the 3 points.

marseille next. thats the focus from now.

  215. And how stupid are players who score and take their shirt off?
Its a yellow and a fucking crime if you ask me.

  216. we made our fair share of fouls mate

gotta remember we have most of the possession so we gonna get fouled more as a logical ratio..

the cards?? i dunno about that but weve started to kick ppl in the air more than we used to..

  217. yeah george taking off shirts dont help either..

    that is a pointless yellow

  218. @ JonJon
Fouls and cards did not remotely even up. Kos’s card was a joke. Song got lucky once, but Sunderland’s players were lucky several times over. Wes Brown should have walked. Webb let them do whatever they wanted in the second half – rotational fouling of RvP included. And he and his assistants all missed a blatant handball. Poor performance.

Who have we been kicking in the air recently?

  219. UntoldArsenal Tony Attwood
Wrong calls were almost exclusively in favour of Sunderland. 23 of the 25 incorrect decisions were against Arsenal.

  220. fungunner
ask frimpong..he sent lucas into orbit..

and it wasnt that poor..otherwise the game would have finished 2-2..

and please dont start with the fouling thing..its football, thats why we wear shin and ankle pads and not slippers and leggings…

  221. decisions decisions conspiracy conspiracy referees referees boo hoo..
the biggest decision was disallowing sunderlands offside..if there was a mass conspiracy that goal would have stood.. no??

we got the call that mattered..

  222. JJ why talk shit?
Who the fuck is claiming a mass conspiracy?
    Honestly,you really confuse me sometimes.

  223. @ JonJon
Webb was poor because he did not apply the rules of the game consistently. Good to see you acknowledge that bad officiating can affect the result of a match, though.

Football has laws as to how you can and cannot win back the ball. What has footballing attire got to do with that?

The only person talking about a conspiracy is you. I was just making the point that Webb’s performance was poor.

  224. goerge
the minute you mentioned tony attwood…
you confuse yourself mate..stop being a girl..

fungunner..who gives a toss about the ref..what was the score..
i hate how refs get so much of the spotlight anyway..ppl constantly bleating over them makes it the case

the refs are shit, ask jack rodwell..get over it, it doesnt apply to only arsenal

  225. JJ, lol ,I will endeavor to leave my girly behaviour behind

  226. lol george i dont mind honestly..
banters good its like being in the pub with my pals chatting with you..i can take it, i know your style now..

i tend to stay clear of untold arsenal to be honest..but thats not knocking him, its just not my cup of tea..

  227. Limestonegunner

Watching re-broadcast of Lorient v. Rennes. Campbell has some skill and gets off a very nice shot off a high bounce that just goes wide. Gets a studs up smash to his groin, the poor lad.

This Lorient team has Aliadiere pairing upfront with Joel Campbell with Gilles Sunu in right midfield/wing but not looking great. Aliadiere is busy and energetic but lacking real threat so far, gets a yellow for diving trying to get a penalty in the box. Bad news.

Meanwhile Arsenal target M’Vila patrols midfield for Rennes, been relatively anonymous so far.

I feel like an Arsenal scout.

  228. This win saved our season. This was huge. RVP is the best player we have. Without the guys are sunk big time. Or how we say in America-stick a fork in em. How will this play out? I don’t know but it is a start.

  229. jon-jon: I have studiously avoided calling you names for many months and I won’t break my resolution.. However the manner in which you blithely dismiss the impact of poor refereeing in the EPL has me wondering as to your state of mind. Yet in most of your recent posts you are quick to make pronouncements about the poor management of the club by the board and the owner, stuff that you acknowledge you have very little facts. Tet what happens on the field of play is indisputably.
So if you care about football and the so-called best league in the world, remove your blinkers and observe the travesty that is refereeing in the EPL led by none other than England’s finest, Mr Howard Webb.
Thanks Untold Arsenal for that thorough review of Webb’s incompetence in the Ars v Sunderland game.

  230. Shotta,

I agree that referee incompetance is a major concern for AFC and the EPL: and Untold Arsenal have done a typically important job here.

I wonder about the real impact of the media here. It seems to me that by christening a “concern” a “moan” or “excuse”, the media both attack one of their favourite targets (Arsene) and preclude comprehensive analysis or consequent change. Note how rarely, even the loyal, gooners now feel confident to raise the issue of referee bias or poor decisions.

When one reflects on the ability we used to have at Highbury to sway a referee during a match, it seems to me that gooners need to continue to kick against the pricks and raise/challenge the issues loudly. Our club’s success could depend on it!
