Positive Signs For Cesc & Nasri But Doubts Remain

A human weakness is to distrust a source bearing ‘bad’ news, believing the same source when it is ‘good’. So what to do when they bring encouraging news? Take the positive or dismiss as a negative? Let’s take the positive, a more optimistic slant will surely now be put on the media stories about Samir Nasri’s future.

Sky Sports are hugely unreliable, purveyors of football tattle of the lowest order. The phrases ‘Sky Sports sources‘ or ‘Sky Sports understands‘ are generally followed by the most inaccurate speculation this side of Christendom.

Nasri’s Mr20% – quite possibly the most irritating man of that ilk since Alex Hleb’s agent appeared – offered the olive branch having found that platitudes offered to Manchester United was akin to hitting a hornet’s nest with a stick as far as Arsenal supporters were concerned,

I want to clarify that there has been no break with the Gunners over the contract’s renewal and we should meet again soon with Arsene Wenger. There are a few clubs interested in Samir, but it is useless to name them. Before listening to other teams, we need and we want to talk with Arsenal.

Daily Star hack David Woods really got to grips with the story though, offering up the news that Nasri wants £6m per year in salary. I’m not sure why this figure comes to bear but certainly it is not rounded if he worked it on a weekly basis. The rationale is that Nasri wants to top Cesc’s salary so the £384.62 each week must really be important. It is as credible as Arsenal trying sign Jermaine Defoe

Leaving aside irritation over the agent-fuelled media speculation, it is a positive step that both Arsenal and the player are willing to continue negotiating. If a story appears on the Arsenal website that talks have broken down then there is reason to believe a parting of the ways is imminent.

Combined with Cesc‘s comments in Madrid, yesterday turned out to be positive for the moment, a step in the right direction. Once more, Fábregas failed to do the Spanish media’s bidding, refusing to request a move but not closing the door to that eventuality,

I am an Arsenal player. I have been very happy for eight years and I am very happy. You can never say never in this life as so many things happen that you can never predict.

Cesc nailed the Spanish media to the mast, noting that the reported meetings did not occur. Again it was carefully chosen words; He did not deny contact with the manager, simply that he had not met with him. Cesc is more PR savvy than Nasri, apologising for indiscretions in a similar situation a year ago. Mea Culpa rather than dismissing matters.

That said, he has a burning desire to play for Barcelona. As he said, they win trophies but also because they were his childhood team. We tend to forget that very few footballers play for clubs they supported as kids. Cesc also wants to win trophies, something Arsenal have not achieved. He highlighted failings in a positive outlook,

A player who is not frustrated at not winning titles is either lying to himself or lacks ambition…There is a good team and a good manager and one of the most faithful fan bases in Europe. With those I believe we can make progress and one day win an important trophy.

It would be quite easy to crow about these statements. A resolution to close the ongoing saga? Perhaps for a while in the media, this will be the case. It will not last, the Catalans will no doubt make an offer they consider fair but in turn is derisory. Fábregas has his prime years ahead of him. When Barcelona were chasing Henry, they noted that the price should reflect his age, experience, ability and revenue generating potential, essentially the return on investment. €30m seems on the low side of insulting.

With his contract entering the final years of its course, talks if not already ongoing will be tough for Arsenal under current circumstances. Whilst Fábregas is keen to stress he is happy at the club, not winning trophies is clearly going to be a difficult hurdle to overcome. It is a test of Ivan Gazidis’ recently stated ambition that Arsenal are going to prevent key personnel from running down their contracts. Persuade Cesc to sign a new deal now and I suspect many will be hailing you as a new David Dein.

According to reports, Arsenal are going to miss out on Ricky Alvarez. Which is a shame because it might have been a pleasant change to hear Martin Tyler screaming, “Rickaaaaaay” instead of Bianca loud-mouthing it in the Square. Also not joining Arsenal this week is Neven Subotic, a player who wafted across the transfer horizon last year but this year never got on the radar. Equally left-field is the belief from Sebastian Larsson that Arsenal want to re-sign him. Perhaps someone from the hacked Arsenal Magazine twitter account has been more creative than we thought.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Cesc went on to say in, I believe in the same interview given good coverage on BBC world service, that Arsenal have potential to be the best club in world football with the base that has been built. He was exceptionally well spoken, forthright and clear. It struck me immediately, he sounded just like captain of a great club.

The choice of words and manner of delivery were those of a person with genuine confidence, conviction and pride.

Nasri’s Mr. 20% is simply saying something that is a negotiating point; Arsenal, we went into a contract when you bought a gifted young player, you now have a player on the cusp being world class, we need to talk about his contract renewal in that way. It’s fine and not a bad point to make. It’s Arsene’s decision, and no doubt he will focus on facts, concede a little but not more than reality dictates.

  2. 1st?? great post.. I really think Nasri and Cesc should be retained this year but inevtable that Cesc will leave at some point.. Instead of investing the money from his sale on some players whenever he goes, it is better to invest the money now and sell him later when we have trophies.. which will help in combatting Financial fair play regulations as well.. I think this is the best for Arsenal.. they should hold on to Fabregas but spend big on the money that they can get from him in the future.. adding quality to the squad more important than quantity…

  3. Yogi,

You’re right: it is easier to accept this positive spin as it’s what I (we) want to hear!

I have never doubted that Samir would resign and just hope we (AFC) can make the figures add up. Cesc’s statement doesn’t seem to really say anything new but, as you indicate, it’s great to see him denying the hacks the (“I am a prisoner desperate to escape”) headlines that they tend to churn out around this time of year.

On that topic, I’d just like to repeat my admiration for the review that Anne posted on Untold Arsenal yesterday (and to the CMM for bringing it to our awareness).

  4. Thanks to fabulous fab. For sounding like a captain….thanks for loving arsenal this far, you still remain dear in our heart. Please stay,we love you.

  5. Great stuff. is it not easier to accept the positive story as it smacks of the truth? is it not the case that the sense behind it shows through.

perhaps I have my rose tinteds on again.

  6. els

I couldn’t understand at the time how Cesc could desperately want to leave the club that gave him that chance and transformed him into a world beater. Was we ever really seriously contemplating Cesc turning his back on us? Sure he would like to play for his local team, I am pretty certain he won’t leave without Wenger’s consent.

The media are a bunch of wankers. Great read: http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/12742

  7. Cesc leaves when Wenger does, always has been the case.

  8. On the media issue and its relationship to Cesc, I have argued (two seasons ago) on ACLF that AFC needs to develop teeth – both in its legal department and PR section. The preferential treatment meted out by the FA, refs and the Englsh media to the likes of the Mancs and Chelski seemed to me to relate to their strength in these areas.

I find the end of Anne’s article very instructive in this light when it argues that:

“there’s one thing that we do know: Ever since FC Barcelona threatened the Daily Star with legal action, we’ve had no more Cesc transfer saga. Or at least, it’s not what it was before. I’ll let you draw your own conclusions about the implications of that…”

This points to a major issue to be addressed by Ivan and hopefully indicates that his declared wariness concerning the press might be the beginning of our club acting upon this realisation. I hope…

  9. Dgob

I disagreed with a number of the conclusions in that article. For example, this transfer window’s reporting has been no worse or better than last year. The crucial difference is the atmosphere. There is no World Cup with a constant dripfeed of stories coming from constant access to the players. Equally, Cesc is more savvy this time and the number of stories which have the feel of a agent’s hand behind them are smaller.

But the biggest difference is Joan Laporta. He was desperate to go out with a bang, squaring the circle. He had to explain the original sale of Cesc which happened under his predecessor’s reign but crossed into his ascension to the throne. His grand plan was to restore pride, he and his staff fed the media. Rosell saw first hand the damage that approach did and is keen to restore relatively reasonable relations between the club.

If you notice, the two recent signings from their academy have not brought forth the insults and indignation from the upper echelons of the club. Most of it has come from the media or former players. Barcelona are being very careful not to piss Arsenal off.

That’s the fundamental difference this year.

    YW

  10. I have been paying special attention all year to the “sky sources understands” punch line. When it’s anything Arsenal and 1. Normally a week late & 2. bit’s from News Now, put together.

    Nasri.

    ZimPaul | June 16, 2011 at 7:47 am

Said it as it is. Narsi, was a raw talent when signed and now he is on the verge of becoming world class so his stock has risen as any other players would. His agent also has to look out for himself and any of us would be doing the same.

I have doubted the great man before but, my excuse is that I was reading and listening to too much media. When one takes a break from them and the shit they churn out about Wenger and Arsenal it’s very easy to see that it’s jealousy of how our great club is run and ignorant anti French hatred towards the man who runs it get’s into CL every year on peanuts while every body else is in huge debt.

They have been saying how we need older players and more steel but, trust me they really don’t want to see that in case we put it together like we have done before under Wenger.

They are totally fucked up and a Gooners should start boycotting certain aspects of media.

  11. Yogi,

I thought that was so strange when all the hatred coming from spain about Arsenal taking their youth suddenly ceased and next thing I read is that we signed two more?!

Very confusing but, not if you look into it properly and come to conclusion that it’s maybe not the clubs and just cunts talking shit.

  12. I agree YW, the World Cup and elections especially had a huge impact on the speculation. I think Barcelona realized quite harshly that their election boasting campaigns which included a fair few rounds of “bring Cesc back” were damaging their chances of striking a deal with Arsenal. Even if they didn’t have a pot to piss in at the time and never intended of realistically buying Cesc that summer, the speculation alone served its purpose. Now it seems to have worn thin amongst the Barca fans and in general people and staff within the club. They do not want to go down that route again.

Everyone knows they would like to buy him, who wouldn’t ? Its quite simply pay up or shut up, it always has been.

  13. I think one day the Daily Mirror will test the patience even of their core audience of cretins with stories like Jermaine Defoe to Arsenal. Eventually the realisation that they’ve been handing money over for childlike footy make-believe will dawn on them and that’ll be it.

Careful how you go there, Daily Mirror. There’s only so much piss-taking you can get away with.

  14. I see Randall and Cruise have been released by Arsenal, wish them both well and a glorious career, especially Randall who is a good talent; as have Paddy by ManC and Carew by …um … Villa I suppose, and Upson by West Ham? I guess there’s zero chance of the latter flitting across London, is there …?

  15. LA,

Never underestimate the depths to which human stupidity can plummet.

    YW

  16. ZP

By all accounts Randall does not have a good attitude, which is why he has yet to find a new club despite several loan spells.

    YW

  17. The main problem with the mainstream media is they read, listen to and watch the mainstream media; the beast feeds off itself by and large. Not much is original in this world. When you find it, stick with it. Arsenal.

  18. The media are all a load of lying, doom¨mongering cunuts. I rarely read sports pages on the daily’s apart from L’equipe in France……….. a fairly balanced view and god forbid, they love Arsene!

On another track, it is unbelievable on twitter at the moment with arsenal fans, apart from all the dreams of buying this player and that player, they also say things like, ” buy Gervinho, Samba and Cahill and we will win the league and CL next season”

    What delusions, it will not be a forgone conclusion………….. other teams are upgrading as well, next season will be tough;

    I understand the fixtures will be published tomorrow, I bet we get QPR for the first game at the Emirates, they will be trying to prove something and Taarabt will score three! Now there’s a prediction;

  19. Northbank1969

United versus Arsenal. Hit them where it hurts from the off!

  20. Chrisgoona

    Re: Joan ‘Boris Risdale’ Laporta.

It might be vaguely interesting to see how that court case between the great and the good up there in the incredibly democratic and representative boardroom of Broke Back Barca (which we’ve not heard that much about) is settled. Then again, maybe not.

  21. YW – Their is a touch of disdain in your comments about Anne’s article at Untold. I thought she did a tremendous service to those of us who demand sanity and less craven media-driven falsehoods about the club. Unlike 99% of Arsenal bloggers, she did her research and can source her reports rather than rely on speculation and innuendo from the media. This is the self-same media which is fully aware that any negative headline screaming Arsenal is in “crisis” is guaranteed stratospheric number of clicks on their websites thus increasing their internet advertising revenue. As a result, it is now conventional wisdom on this blog and throuhhout the football media that Cesc is bound to leave Arsenal for his boyhood club, Barcelona. It never ceases to amaze me the credulity of these experts who believe that Cesc would prefer to ride the proverbial pine at Barcelona rather than be the principal playmaker and club captain at a big club like Arsenal.
Urban myths on the internet have a long shelf life. No doubt the nutters will continue to spout the Cesc to Barcelona nonsense. I only hope ACLFers will give them short shrift.

  22. finsbury

Its got to be an improvement to the news we are fed by our expert analyst sports writers, hopefully one of the more professional papers can stream it on their front or back pages!

  23. Cesc has been very clever with this statement. This statement will not hurt anyone. Barcelona media is already taking it as a very positive sign and Arsenal also doing the same. What it does is that it places his future in hands of Wenger. This a 50-50 chance for Wenger. If he can convince Fabregas for a contract extension(even by one year), he would be the winner. Otherwise there will be pressure to sell him at whatever price next season to Barca. Hope Thiago and Jonathan would have started to emerge by that time,

  24. Bibin

Why worry about a contract extension when the current deal runs to 2015? They might start talking now but the real haggling goes on in 2013. The big mistake Barcelona and their supporters make is believing the Spanish media who insist that Arsenal need the money. Barcelona were hoping he would agitate for a move. Cesc won’t. If Barcelona want him, then they are going to have to pay. The only way that Barcelona will get him for €35m or less is in 2014. Even then, don’t be surprised if he signs a new contract which has an official or unofficial escape clause in excess of £40m.

    YW

  25. goonerton | June 16, 2011 at 9:46 am

very impressive post.I think that sums up how many of us have had moments of weakness.Unfortunately some do not have your self awareness and fail to recover.

  26. Jabba's delights

    Yogi

Completely agree. The only time when we start to lose the power in this negotiation is 2013 when his contract has 2 years to run as we have seen with the diffculties this year with Clichy and Nasri. How any why Barca think that we need money i have no idea. Unless he offers a tranfer request which seems highly unlikely they are buggered.

They have offered 27 for Sanchez so they can afford bugger all after that really.

  27. Yogi, are you of a different mind now as regards the chances of Cesc leaving?

  28. YW:
I thought his current deal expies on 2013. So my mistake. Then the chances of this transfer happening will be in the negative scale in this and next summer.

  29. “€30m seems on the low side of insulting” specially when watching Henderson in the U21 last night. I can’t understand that one at all. Lansbury lookled better. Fabregas showed some maturity and answerd every question admirably. The hacks must’ve felt gutted he did not give them what they wanted.

  30. Chris,

I suppose we can just browse on sites like the Swiss Ramble and continue to ignore the sorry and desperate hacks.

    -

‘Playing the same way in fifty years’ my Arsenal.

Stuart Pearce shall henceforth be awarded with the order of the D**Mer. Am very glad little Jack is not spending his hols suffering from neck cramp staring at the sky running in circles waiting for someone to pass to him.
Having written that, I bet they go on to beat the Czech team.

  31. Cesc talked exactly as someone who understands the next two seasons are with Arsenal, and thereafter things will take their course according to circumstances at that time. His diplomatic language (unexpected things do happen … I am not ruling out anything etc etc) was being sensitive to Spanish and Barcelona sentiment, not to Arsenal, where he fully expects to play for two more seasons.

I very much doubt that within Arsenal management anyone seriously considers a bid from Barcelona, or anywhere else for Cesc; or say to each other (as fans do) “if they offer us 60 million let’s sell him and buy big”. What nonsense.

  32. I would love to see Larssen back at the club. I think he is one of the best crossers since Beckham!

  33. Cesc should be cursing himself, or his agent, for signing such a long contract. And yet the fellow who gave him that contract was a genius – or took a very big risk. Thus far it’s paying off.

  34. Dgob

My apologies for not responding to your request (yesterdays post @ 12:33). I was called away immediately after posting and have only just seen your post.

I trust you have read part 2 by now ( it was made available a few hours after part 1) but if not let me know and I will provide you with a link.

I am glad you found it helpful.

    YW

I like the new layout. It is easy on the eye. Well done.

  35. george rodger

I think it is possible to forget just how good Cesc actually is.
Last season his fitness was never really there .And yet he created the most goal scoring opportunities, per minute played,in Europe.
We were beguiled with Nasri when he stepped into the center and started to score at the rate Cesc had done the previous year, yet the number of assists for Cesc in incomparable. In short Nasri is no where near as good ,or as influential,as Cesc.
Imagine how many passes he would complete if playing for Barca,I am sure it would be on a par with Xabi.Yet he scores at a much greater rate and can run better and more powerfully with the ball.(remember the 1 minute Derby?)
I believe he is the best mid field player in the world and the best is possibly yet to come,
I am of a mind that we should make him staying ,at least in the medium term, our number one priority.

  36. Miami Arsenal

We live in a different era now, one where almost all footballers see the game as a career and thus seek what benefits them not the fans. Put it another way, footballers are mercenaries. I think Cesc is doing a stand up job as a captain for this team in the behaviour he is showing regarding speculation surrounding his future. But the notion that we are going to have players stay at Arsenal their entire careers is foolish bordering on stupid. Arsenal have a policy to look for youth and value, that same policy is part of the reason we see players leave at the end of a contract having become (in some cases) world names. If we continue to seek value from foreign markets we are bound to continue the cycle and thus should neither be surprised or upset come suitors offering more. I want both Nasri and Cesc to remain loyal to Arsenal and help deliver success but I am also pragmatic enough to finalise that in some cases is just won’t happen.

  37. “Which is a shame because it might have been a pleasant change to hear Martin Tyler screaming, “Rickaaaaaay” instead of Bianca loud-mouthing it in the Square.”

    ha ha!

  38. George

I thought Barcelona had recovered enough to bid for him and that the public utterances about poverty were a bargaining chip. It seems that even a megabucks sponsorship deal is not good enough to salvage their mess.

My view was – and remains – that Cesc would leave if the two clubs agreed a fee. And I don’t think he would miss a heartbeat in making that choice.

    YW

  39. george rodger

At one point,,around 2005 in think, Dennis Bergkamp was 2nd only to David Beckham in the football rich list.We never heard about Dennis and any hardball agent he may have had. There is no need to leave Arsenal in order to become fabulously wealthy.
But i think Miami Arsenal has summed it up very well.

  40. 1LC

Comparing prices is a dangerous game. Because there is such a paucity of English talent, transfers between Premier League clubs carries a premium. On top of that, Liverpool are known to have a larger than normal transfer pot. Put those two together and they will pay over the odds which is why Carroll cost £35m but Suarez an established and experienced international cost £13m less. And Henderson, well, that is just desperation and rank bad negotiating by Liverpool.

You cannot therefore say that Cesc is worth 3 Henderson’s. The only real comparitors are Ronaldo – and Cesc doesn’t have the same marketability – and Torres. They are both forwards and therefore always going to be more expensive but £40 – £50m seems fair for a player who is half a decade away from his peak.

    YW

  41. Numberten

If he’s a good crosser, he’d be wasted at Arsenal, we don’t get enough people in the box and only RvP of the regular XI can head the bloody ball.

    YW

Thanks Yogi, I an sure you are right about his willingness to go.I just sense a change in your mind on the likelihoods of him going?

  43. George

Like I said, it’s because Barcelona are further in the poo than anyone thought. Mind you, fail to sign Sanchez and you can expect a £40m+ to land on Ivan’s desk.

    YW

  44. Yogi:

Great to have some good news. Really glad to see Cesc doing such a great job of managing the media. Last year was a circus and your explanation is probably the most reasonable one I have seen as to why things are quieter this year. Hopefully the whole transfer saga will die a relatively quick and quiet death so we can concentrate on other things.

News about Nasri the most encouraging for a while but still not holding my breath about him. Unfortunately, unlike Cesc he has the leverage so I suspect the club will have to give him a significantly higher wage package then they want if we hope to keep him. Fingers crossed that he stays.

  45. Miami Arsenal

I hear tell that Barca’s financial situation improved substantially from where they were a year ago. It seems Barca made 64 million (euro) from winning the CL this year and that combined with internal cuts to expenses by around 50 million (euro) resulted in losses of around 21 million (euro) down from the much talked about 83 million (euro) the year prior. I apologise, I don’t have a euro symbol and I have no idea how I can find it on my US keyboard :)

Barca, like many clubs are seeking a solution to what was rampant spending. The ramifications of ‘Financial Fair Play’ are not truly non yet but there is a 3-5 year lead time to get where clubs are required to be, to meet the criteria. In additon, I understand that there are caveats to the ‘FFP’ where clubs are allowed to write of monies from training ground expenses, academy’s etc.

I worry that rather than bring teams closer in terms of results it well rather keep the status quo. With financial resources determined by revenue how can it suit anything but the top teams? Barca and Real Madrid shall benefit further from individually negotiated TV revenues, compared to their English counterparts. There may well be a push to negotiate individual deals by the likes of Arsenal, Manu, Chelsea etc where they are certain of benefiting more than Sunderland, Blackburn etc. I want Arsenal to succeed, but I also want a game where I know the opposition are in with a chance, otherwise I might as well stick to Football Manager 2011 and load the game again everytime I don’t get the result I want.

  46. Eto is leaving Inter and wants Premiership action… that’d be nice! A tad expensive though m’thinks.

  47. Yeah, way to’o expensive for for us.

  48. lol OOU. ah well…

  49. george rodger

Eto is 30 years old .cant see us paying a big fee for him.
Is there not also something about his knees?

  50. Keep holding you breath, Bill!

  51. Geo,
Eto would be well worth it, in my exceedingly biased opinion. There is no doubting his killer instinct. Worry about his attitude though, and how that will play out under Wenger.

  52. I still think he’d be an awesome addition to the team.. Imagine him with RvP just behind… But you’re right, we wouldn’t pay a big fee for him these days, even though his value has dropped a fair bit now.

I heard he has very knobbly knees, George… is that what you meant? ;-)

  53. i think city will buy him

  54. Why so exceedingly biased Henristic?

  55. Because he is one of my most favourite players Geo

  56. Fair enough! I must say, he’s up there for me too… Have always loved his style. Can be devastating!

  57. Us buying Eto would be like Barca buying Henry from us. A player past his prime, but you can depend on him to do a job.

He wouldn’t have a problem adjusting to the PL (Africans generally don’t have a problem with physical or speedy leaues), and shouldn’t have a problem fitting into our system either.

Hi reported problematic attitude is the main worry for me

  58. Enough of the fantasizing now. I know that if he ever comes to the PL, it will be to Mancity or chelsea. any player in his position will want his last big payday, and we can’t offer that

  59. Hello all. Positive words from Cesc there. Can’t wait to see him on the pitch again!

  60. Jabba's delights

A friend has just mailed me that we have got utd away first game of the season.

Good time to get i think. Theyb are usually poor starters, we will have already had a competative game under our belts

  61. YW,
    re-Larssen,

At least his corners would get into the box!

  62. Depending on cost Eto would be a fantastic purchase, but let’s face it, he would deputise for RvP, possibly Arshavin down the left, probably start 15-20 games max. (but if RvP got injured it would start to look like the best buy ever, kind of Campbellesque-ish). Two seasons of Eto would be worth a purchase price of 10 million euros (and no ‘re-sale value’ to speak of), but not more.

To be fair jabba he has about a 37 to 1 chance of being right

  67. george rodger

What concerns me most about our transfer dealing is that when we sell we demand top money yet we seem want clubs to accept somewhat less than that if we deem to take their player off their hands.
Now I know very well that this make both common and business sense, and that we must be seen as a club that is strong in our negotiations, but sometimes you have to pay top whack if something is just right for you.You know like if a piece of clothing makes you look that bit better it is worth paying a bit over the top for it. Well if a player is just what we need ,like Eto perhaps.then just once in a while it might be worth it.
This runs contrary to what I usually say but a bit of extravagance might give us all a lift.
And even bring some unity among the fans back.
Which is the main problem at the club at present.Well as I see it anyway.

  68. I would like us to sign Defoe….

  71. Yogi @ 9:32am,

I see your view but differ on a couple of points. While I fully accept that Laporta’s swan song played its part (along with the World Cup absences and associations) in increasing speculation about Cesc, that does not address the surge of supposed Barca players making crap statements about our captain. The key strength of the article seems to me to be in the facts that are translated and which I was unaware of: for example, the Puyol refutation and the cultural contextualisation of the “DNA” comment.

On this front alone, I think we have seen a massive reduction in the number of such comments coming out of Barca/the British press. I feel that is self evidently important when you consider the impact that had even on a sober site such as this (my own comments at the time not excluded).

  72. CMM,

No problem and thanks very much. It was useful, to me.

  73. Bergkamp v Newcastle or van Persie v Charlton?

I suspect I know what most people out here think but I’m still leaning toward van Persie v Charlton

  74. abiyo ademola

  75. ma2aaditya it is too hard to choose. I can say that I am envious of those who got to witness those moments in person.

  76. george rodger

    Dennis anywhere

  77. I think the research underpinning Anne’s excellent pair of articles on UA shows that the vast majority of the Barca quotes were bogus, that the actual number of interviews was a tiny fraction of the number of media stories and that there was an agenda (even if only a commercial one, not an anti-Arsenal one) which was being served by the publishing and recycling of these inaccurate stories. Who of us can forget the shirt incident after the WC, but even so, the main thrust of Anne’s article, which is that Barca players have NOT in fact been tapping up Cesc *via interviews in the media*, is hard to resist. We shouldn’t really be surprised, given what we know of the media.

    @ ZP
I tend to agree that nothing will happen with Cesc for another couple of years. Going by last year’s actions and by what AW and Cesc have said this year (including Cesc’s interview), I conclude that Cesc is still not for sale. He accepts that he will have to defer the realisation of his childhood dream – the issue was settled last summer and I think both sides will abide by their decisions. Cesc doesn’t hate being at Arsenal, he just loves Barca more. I don’t think AW would sell Cesc earlier even if BBB could come up with his true market value. For money to swing the deal, they would have to shell out several times his value, given what is at stake for Arsenal if we appear to be unable to hold on to our talisman. And at the moment, keeping our core together is more important than having £45 million or even £60 million.

Out of interest, does anyone know where the story came from, that Arsenal had set a price for Barca to meet?

  78. ZimPaul ~

    Are you from Zimbabwe?

  79. Ditto previous posts…but I’ll believe it when I see it. Thierry stated vociferously that he wasnt leaving to placate the fans and then dropped a bombshell. But for what TH14 and Cesc have given to the club you could never begrudge them moving to mes que un clubb BBB. As for Nasri….what has he done really?

  80. Bradys right foot

Jabba i’d love to play Utd first game of the season, putting a few past De Gea would be great. The young keeper has got huge gloves to fill.

  81. Four weeks to pre-season. Hang in there, people.

  82. If we play United away on the first day of the season, what makes you people think that Riley and his cronies won’t do everything in their power to see that we lose that game? Phil Dowd will probably be appointed for that game.

I won’t be surprised if a referee scandal hit the EPL in a few years time.

  83. FG,

    I agree.

  84. How long does Cesc have left on his contract? I though he signed a lengthy extension a couple of years ago.

  85. george rodger

    4 years I think

  86. Yeah – about what I thought.

  87. Nasri’s contribution has been invaluable this season but if he doesn’t have Arsenal in his heart is he worth keeping?
I seriously don’t think so. I mean Cesc who loves Barca loves Arsenal more than Nasri. He has just performed well this season before which he was just a talented but inconsistent player.

  88. Colney @6.17pm

I would be stunned if a referee scandal hit the EPL in a few years time.

They’ve had decades of practice at covering up incompetence.

    YW

  89. Colney (again) at 6.02pm

No, he’s from Croydon. But CroPaul didn’t sound as cool as ZimPaul.

    YW

  90. Marc

He signed an extension not that long ago which took it to 2015. So no pressure on Arsenal until 2013 at the earliest from that perspective.

    YW

  91. BRF @6.13pm

And that’s what he’s scared of doing. De Gea recently told the Spanish media that the fee didn’t bother him, filling van der Sar’s gloves did. Wouldn’t it be nice to give him nightmares about the coming season.

    YW

  92. would anyone have vieira back..

  93. im hoping the change of number 1 disrupts utd next year..
    like it did after schmiechal..

  94. why not..
free agent, years of experience, captian of the invincibles..give him a year and 10-15 apps and i think he could do a job, especially in the dressing room..
proper leader, just be good to have him around the place..leading to a future coaching role maybe??

  95. george rodger

JJ 25 man rule might make that difficult.
    How are you?
Been quite in your absence :)

  96. george rodger

He could be no. 3 though

  97. JJ

When AW starts signing players on the basis of 10-15 games, we’re really in trouble.

    YW

  98. im not sure how much that rule is going to affect us to be honest.
im alright mate hows tricks with you?

  99. thats a fiar point yogi..
i think though wenger signed campbell and lehmann on the basis of not even 10-15 games..
maybe the clubs already in trouble??

  100. Vieira back….hah aha, that’s a good one JJ. Maybe we can call back Bergkamp, Adams, and few more ancient legends.
…Or just watch old tapes of Arsenal glory?

  101. george rodger

I would have dennis back tomorrow :)

  102. Dennis and Robin up top it is! Would be an interesting combo, dutch flicks n tricks for 90mins. I do feel Dennis’s old legs may mean Van Persie has to do extra grafting!

    Jabba… You stole my prediction!

  103. george rodger

I would be happy with Dennis standing on the center spot spraying the ball about

  104. He’ll be a new brand of midfielder. Doesn’t have to run 30 yards in any direction.

  105. Gunner4Ever | June 16, 2011 at 9:11 pm

I would gladly take Bergkamp back too :)

  106. Its settled then :)

  107. Nasir Jones-Nasri

    Weeeeve got Cesc Fabregas!

  108. Yogi,

A little something for your pending journey:
