Flawed Thinking & Cruyff Praises RvP

The morning before the morning before the night before. Or something like that anyway. The papers are awash with helpful hints about how to beat Barcelona, why Cesc is the Player of the Year, who’s in, who’s out, who they are scared of, why Arsenal won’t win, why they will and where the most aerodynamic toilet rolls can be purchased. Well, if no-one has printed that, they certainly ought to.

Ian’s Wrong

Ian Wright though believes that Arsenal should forget the Champions League and concentrate on domestic glory. Regular readers will know that Ian Wright the pundit is not rated very highly on these pages. For once he has avoided the histrionics which seem to surround his every spoken word.

Wright’s assertion that is wrong is this one,

if they go out this would give them a better chance of winning the League

There is no logic to this. There is absolutely no evidence he can produce which will support such a claim. Equally, there is none to disprove it.

This time he argues that the lack of depth in both Arsenal and United’s squads is such that they will be compromised by injuries and suspensions. The latter is irrelevant since domestic and european suspensions are separate issues. The former, well they are going to be there come what may. Samir Nasri’s hamstring went in an FA Cup tie but who can say whether or not it would have gone in a training session or the next match?

Wright’s arguments are flawed though. The squad’s depth is better than it is given credit for. There will always be one or two injuries floating around in the starting XI but equally, loss of form can be detrimental. He has a point about United but that is their problem, not ours.

However, a defeat can be equally damaging in their minds. They may suffer a lapse in confidence which scuppers a title challenge as a result of elimination from the Champions League. Put simply, there are too many ifs, buts and maybes surrounding this.

Winning all of the trophies that they enter this season is going to be Arsenal’s target; it is the same each season. Targeting one at the expense of others is a dangerous game since you frequently end up with nothing at all.

The aim of winning all four has been stated by the manager and the squad. To do that they have to take one game at a time, something that appears to be happening as there was no let up against Wolves despite being two goals to the good and utterly dominant.

This match is only important in the context of the Champions League; it is not going to make or break the season. A win in the tie might give a confidence boost but that will be shortlived if the tournament is exited in the next round.

Cruyff Turns, Van Persie Scores

Over in Barcelona, the players have been at great pains to point out the improvement at Arsenal this season. Whilst Lionel Messi says that last season the Catalans were scared of Theo Walcott’s pace, Johan Cruyff believes it Robin van Persie who is the bigger threat.

Since returning from injury, the Dutchman has scored the most goals in January / February since the Premier League came into existence – ten in all. van Persie is currently the most in-form striker in the country, scoring a goal every 86.8 minutes in the league. Little wonder that Cruyff was so effusive in his praise.

The Dutch maestro highlighted the problem which faces defenders when van Persie is around,

He is good on his right foot, even better on his left and decent in the air.

If that is not enough, his versatility in finishing makes him hard to displace from the team, as Marouane Chamakh has noted.

Not that the Moroccan is complaining as he is, not to put too fine a point on it, knackered. The adaptation period to English football was immediate for the newcomer, van Persie’s injury forcing Chamakh to play more frequently than he or Wenger probably expected. Seeing the first XI hit their rich vein of form has meant time on the bench which has been welcomed in that he has gained a rest.

More importantly, Chamakh has shown an excellent attitude. No tantrums, no boasting, acceptance that his physical condition and the form of others means that he is not a first choice striker. That is good for the squad but also if the player comes back more determined to stake a claim, it is beneficial to him in the long run. Whether he will be as happy if this situation continues is the acid test but at the moment he deserves his praise.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. As Always an interesting read…Set me up for the day……

  2. Why do we only hear positive ramblings from our ex foriegn players. is it that foriegners are more optimistic, maybe us english are a bunch of pessimists. must be to do with the weather.

  3. Great article YW.

I am feeling confident. I am feeling proud. I am anticipating trophies. We have a better squad than Barca. We have a better manager than Barca. We have been fighting in a tougher league than Barca. We have a better defence than Barca. We are going to win. Bring them on.

    Arsenal.

  4. French journalist Julien Laurens has opined that Nasri could feature tomorrow night. Can’t wait, this buildup is unbearable!

  5. I expect Nasri to start tomorrow.

  6. Don’t lump me in with you pessimists Duke!

I may be English by birth but I’m the Earth’s favourite son!

  7. I expect Nasri to be on bench and come on after 65mins for AA…

  8. Wright is an idiot. We have the stongest squad that we have had for years. United….like YW mentioned, who cares? Some of the punditry out there is amazingly stupid. On MotD after our highlights had been on, Hansen yet again stated as fact that our centre backs and keeper are still week. Really? In the past this has been an issue, but a few blips aside I don’t see much evidence of that this year (and we have our best CB missing).

I can’t wait for tomorrow, we got a bit of a football lesson last year against Barca, but I still felt cheated as we had quite a few players missing over the 2 legs. If our players “play withouit the handbrake on” as Arsene likes to put it, we are more than capable of a win tomorrow.

  9. I figure we have the worst ex players. Listen to other clubs’ exes are happy enough to make supportive noises in the media.

  10. Cruyff has always praised van Persie very highly. When van Persie joined Arsenal and Robben joined Chelsea, he said that Arsenal got the better player. Hopefully van Persie will show tonight why Cruyff is right.

  11. **Tomorrow night.

  12. Wright as a player was outstanding, but I reckon he did not like the way Arsene shipped him out when he thought the time was right and there is a bit of resentment there. Even then, he is not the sharpest tool in the box anyway. Not all of our ex-paplers are bad; Dixon and Keown both speak lots of sense.

Merse is just a bit daft, Adams is a strange bloke, and Alan Smith is employed by Sky so has to be seen to be impartial.

  13. Wrighty obviously rthinks that having less games to play = probabillity of more players potentially staying fit, makes sence. This is the first year in the medern era at the Emerates that we have not focused on one more competition than another, otherwise i think its reasonable to argue that we would have dropped out of a top four place yearsv ago, this year we do have the strength in depth to compete , and i mean compete properly on all four fronts, and i think we are the only team that can, why cause we have the best squad. We are out of the restraints of youth and now this team has matured, not fully, but to the level that we can expect we will win something. My hope is that we can keep this squad with the exception of one or two. Since the turn of the year, possibly earlier we have played with a consistant level of pace, movement and tecnique, the newcastle game being a fluke, Barca are a great team, we are one year older, this will be a good test for us.

  14. This will be tough , even a 3-0 home win is no banker, remember chelsea barca in 2000, chelsea won the first leg 3-0 and i remember all chelsea fans thought they were through but then they went out to barca and got thumped 5-1. will take two perfect performances from us but we can do it, i believe.

  15. I think momentum is more relevant to burnout for a team. Once a team is on a streak of good form it can be pivotal. A few years ago we were playing really well, and played Manure in the cup. We rested loads of players and got an abostule battering. The team lost the momentum, form suffered, and our season went out with a wimper.

Which is one reason why I am glad we played our 1st choice side at the weekend. In the past we would have rested a few, and maybe messed the game up. Now the squad go into the game tomorrow full of confidence and feeling sharp.

  16. Good article. Wright comes up with more random dribble. So sad.

I really can’t wait for it now. Theo is going to be immense. He’s my tip. I’m thinking about a tenner on Theo to score 2 goals.

  17. duke – I agree. Regardless of how well we play, we also seem to have the innate ability to shoot ourselves in the foot.

  18. I actually think Jack could be the main man in this game. He will be itching to show that he is worth his place against the likes of Xavi. He is no respector of reputation, and this game could be made for him.

  19. We should shoot Villa, Messi and Iniesta in the foot. Then Xavi and Busquets in the face. Sorted.

  20. I agree with Els and Goonerandy. I think Jack and Theo will both have a big impact. (Cesc, Samir and RvP too obviously!)

  21. I am not English, obviously, so one could understand if I was a little of an agnostic when it comes to a match-up between Arsenal vs Spain’s Barca, if that was ever possible. But from a purely nationalistic point of view, it is shocking to read the the English press, with a few isolated exceptions, doting and fawning over BBB as if they walk on water and can never be beaten. The pure hypocrisy of their coverage is enough to make me puke. Praising BBB’s passing game, importance of technique rather than brawn, emphasis on youth and homegrown players etc. For a minute you would think they were speaking of Arsenal FC except the recent coverage is that we have a weak center with nary a word as to how referees like Phil Dowd et al allow players like Barton to kick our players off the park without the remotest threat of punishment. Isn’t it the same English press who heap praise and flattery on BBB who routinely dismiss our chances of winning the EPL? Something is rotten in England, not Denmark, I can affirm.

  22. RvP sure has an improving curve. He will be a threat and give us opportunity to score from outside the penalty box.

  23. “He is no respector of reputation”

Ugg. Horrible choice of phrase GA! The same thing was said about the vile Shawcross when he commited an illegal act upon the lesser Emmanuel.

    Our Jack is a repudiator.

  24. Geo “We should shoot Villa, Messi and Iniesta in the foot. Then Xavi and Busquets in the face. Sorted.” Sounds like quite a plan that.

  25. Go out guns blazing, that’s what I say els ;-)

Shotta – are the Danish press etc giving us a chance in this tie? I suppose they are more fair in their analysis/previews? It makes me sick that any other big english team will have every pundit and football fan in the land behind them in a tie like this, but Arsenal? No chance. We will be made to look like little boys again. Barca lite. Nothing more.

  26. I despise all this barca worship. They are not unbeatable and no more ‘the best side’ ever than Rooney scored ‘the best goal ever’. Arsene knows how to win this tie and I think we will.

    Fuck Barca. Bring ‘em on.

Oh and Andy, “Alan Smith is employed by Sky so has to be seen to be impartial.” Where have you been for the past ten years? SKY, impartial?

  27. Could we have a second strike team Geo, round at Puyol’s house?

  28. Bob – heh, fair one.

  29. I’m guiltily going back a post to watch that ‘Ronaldo the 1st’ clip. He was a very special player.

  30. Messi says walcott is someone he dreads facing.

“I can only speak from experience but he was one of the most dangerous players I have ever played against,” Messi told the Telegraph.

“Barcelona players are not scared easily but I can tell you that when we played Arsenal last season he truly worried us.”

  31. My only slight worry about the match is our players becoming over physical and incurring the wrath of the referee (whoever he is). In particular, Jack Wilshere will want to boss his share of the m/f and the fine line between a fair tackle and a reckless one must be respected. We don’t want a suspension of anyone for the second leg.

  32. Wright is not the brightest spark. Not his fault his brains were definitely in his feet love him or hate him.It beats the drivel weve had to endure with Rooneys goal of a lifetime in the game of the season better than Pele cr@p. For once I have no trepidation about this match up. We are able to field near enough our strongest team for once, key players are in electrifying form and we have a winning mentality.I have an even stronger belief that this team is on the verge of greatness and will play the game of their life and beat Barca. Guillem Ballage Arsenal is infinitly better than Barca and this will be proven over the two ties. RVP….the truth. Nuff said. Bring on the Catalans. Arsenal…more than a club.

  33. I think it was Wenger who said that had it not been for his injuries RVP would be right up there with Messi and Ronaldo. We’ll need him on top form tomorrow night. Fingers crossed for the match. Not on how we play but on the electricity. Rained hard in Nairobi last night and our estate went into a blackout. Those are some of the pleasures of being a Kenyan.

  34. els, shooting Puyol is too quick an easy death for him. I suggest honey, flesh eating ants and certain small parts of his anatomy!

  35. oooooooo drew that’s the ticket I’m just bidding on ebay for a jar full of them.

  36. els, I think Puyol is out for Wednesday night anyway. Although it’s in the Sun so it could be a) complete bollocks, or b) Barca trying the old Fergie trick.

  37. Aussie Gooner Dave

I’m not English, I’m a depressed Aussie cricket supporter but my love for the Gooners outweighs any patriotism I have for the Aussie cricket team. Don’t worry what Ian Wright says, he seems a little bitter nowadays. That’s a shame. He is a club legend. I’d love the mighty Gooners to really stick it up aARSEalona tomorrow. Secretly, me thinks they’re poohing themselves. I guarantee if you asked Pep before the draw for 1/4 finals was made, he would have been preying not to meet Arsenal. I just think we need to keep our heads and not get carried away with the hype. Stay calm and it will happen. Arsenal til I die.

  38. Just watched that Ronaldo video too… No-one like him since. Amazing until he got a bit too pie-obsessed.

I agree with Steww. Puyol may well be out, but the ants and honey would not go to waste.

  39. I know Markus that’s why we’ll need a second strike team round at his house. If we start with Geo’s plan. We don’t want the big nosed twat to smell something fishy and get the jump on us. It all has to go off at the same time.

  40. Oops I meant infinitly better than Real Madrid…trigger finger

  41. Speaking of ex players, my daughter and I were watching the pundits in the studio before or after or during one of our games a few games back, and Nigel Winterburn was in the studio.

The plundit to his right (Nigel was sitting to everyone else’s left) started splurging some absolute crap about Arsenal.

My daughter started laughing and said, “look at Nigel’s death stare!”.

Honestly, he looked at the chop as if he was a split second away from standing up and nutting him!

    Nigel’s a legend, a true Gooner!

  42. To true Geo. Ronaldo got hit by the brazillian super star curse. Top of their game then bang. Pies and Prozzies, Pies and Prozzies.

  43. RVP’s volley against Charlton was better by miles than Rooney’s goal. The technique needed for RVP’s volley was much better. Any decent striker can score an overhead kick when given the time and space that the defenders slip gave Rooney. I am not saying it wasn’t a good goal it is just had it been anyone else who had scored it there wouldn’t have been this madness.

  44. Weird about the Brazilians isn’t it? Look at Adriano, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo… All could have stayed at the top of the game for a few more years if it wasn’t for that. Adriano didnt even make it to the top of the game before he went pie crazy. Such a shame.

  45. An Arsenal fan and an Aussie cricket fan!

You are my favourite sort of poster Aussie Gooner Dave -especially now.

This is a great time to be an Arsenal fan and an England cricket fan.

  46. Thinking of Nigel, I reckon we should resurrect his old chant for AA23. An-drey Ar-shar-vin works instead of Ni-gel Win-ter-burn. We need a song for Andrey, show him the love and we get back a truly world class player.

He is just beginning to find his form again and this could show him how much we appreciate him!

  47. Drew – RvP’s goal was far superior! He was running at goal, had to re-adjust and then figure out the best way to connect at that speed etc… Rooney scored a goal that a lot of attackers would have practiced over and over again for a lot of their lives. I used to try them all the time, and finally in my last match for my school, I scored 2! Admittedly, neither as top-cornery as his, but still… RvP’s was far more unique and difficult to adjust for than Rooney’s.

  48. The hype surrounding Rooney’s is mostly becaus eit won the derby and could potentially win the league. If United do win the league we’ll never hear the end of ‘that goal’.

    Efforts must be tripled.

  49. Winterburn’s been on here abit, more of him and less of Townsend/Curbishley/Hutchison/Burley please

  50. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the last few years is that there are Arsenal-related opinions out there that are the complete opposite of my own.

In Ian Wright’s case he’s wrong to downgrade the Champions’ League (as many do) over the Premiership for some or all of the following reasons:

Firstly, winning the CL promotes Arsenal FC to the rarefied ranks of the greatest clubs in world football. It’s not that we’re not a great club without winning the competition, but in terms of global perception it’s an argument against us.

Second, revenue. Financially we’d be a massively more marketable brand commanding far higher revenues than we do now. And revenue affects all aspects of the club from lower ticket prices to wage structure. It might even postpone the need for the threatened summer tours and allow AW to concentrate on proper pre-season training.

Thirdly, market popularity. Everyone and their dog are trying to expand their support base abroad. Markets like China, South Korea, and sub-Saharan Africa are all areas of enormous potential for us. Football is no longer just a parochial community – it’s global. And winning a competition like the Champions’ League while playing the kind of football we do will exponentially and automatically increase our fanbase.

Fourthly, we would be far more attractive to many more potential acquisitions of all ages. There are players out there who will always think Barcelona, Real Madrid, the two Milans, and ManU are ahead of us simply due to the fact they’ve won the CL/EC and we haven’t. It would not only show our ambitions it would categorically prove them. And with that help us keep this special squad intact.

And lastly, local perception. It would get the media off our backs, it would get the Grovers off our backs, it would prove Wenger right, it would prove our faith in this squad/philosophy/manager … et alia

Of course it doesn’t have to happen this season – but it could. And while the league is a truer test of consistency, winning the CL is far more glamorous. The final, at Wembley, would be a 90-odd minute encapsulation of glory that the league can never provide.

So what if Ian Wright doesn’t have faith in the depth of our squad. So what if he doesn’t believe we can beat Barcelona over two legs with the best team at our disposal. So what if he also doesn’t believe we can win both in the same season. He’s entitled to think these things. But in my view it’s an insult both to my intelligence and to my faith in Arsenal FC.

And anyway our players deserve better.

  51. Last season we had quite the rumble with a Barca supporter assessing the possibilities pre-match and a lot of posting on ACLF veered from emotional rubbish to outright hatred of Barca for non-footballing reasons.

An objective assessment is always more interesting. Barca are very, very good and no fools in cup ties. This season their performances (if not results per se) may well eclipse last season. This is a serious match.

However, they will not be aware (no matter how much research they have done) of where and how far Arsenal has improved as a team. Last time they faced young Bendtner and Denilson, Almunia, an injured Cesc, an out of position Arshavin and an injury-mauled defence. Walcott played well, but is better this season. The team really does have some rhythm about it now, and as noted many times this season, has become a more determined team.

Barca are clear favourites, especially effective at hounding the opposition in packs and getting the ball back for longish spells; but have little real idea about their opposition. I suspect Arsenal is by far the faster team. It is one thing watching RvP videos, and another trying to mark the guy, because of his improvisation. This is our advantage. They don’t know what they are facing, and memories of last season will be unhelpful to Barca, simply because they are not facing the same team.

The gap is closer than ever, how close is uncertain. Barca have pedigree, we are the pretenders. The objective truth however is that Arsenal and Barca are now equally the two top teams in Europe playing a version of football that requires considerable (but fast) forethought in passing and movement, coupled with swift and lethal striking, and a well-organised defensive style of play when not in possession.

I would say, honestly and optimistically, it’s about equal (thinking both legs), with Arsenal potentially the hungrier and faster and Barca superbly mobile and the great Messi and Villa dangerous in many situations that don’t seem threatening until too late. On our side, the whole team is a danger, with Walcott, Cesc, Nasri/Arsh, RvP and even Song all capable of scoring, and Wilshere capable of a match-winning performance.

For us to beat them over two legs they need to be scared of us, therefore hesitant, and for us to achieve this, we need to scare them probably from the first. How do you scare Barca? By playing without fear of course.

  52. Also Xavi went down like a sack of drowning mime artists whenever we got anywhere near him last year.

  53. Zim – Nice post, I do think they will know all about our imrovement though. They will have scouted us plenty, and even a few of their players have been saying we are much improved on last year. Not that it will make much difference.

  54. So if I watch that Ronaldo clip a hundred times by 5 a-side on thursday will I automatically start doing step overs and knockthrough’s, just without thinking.

  55. You can’t compare the two volleys of the day: Rooney and RvP, both outstanding strikes, Rooney’s is a goal of a lifetime, somewhere between outrageous lucky fluke (you can’t direct an overhead volley except vaguely towards goal, trying to keep it down) with sublime timing to make good connection, which is the skill bit. RvP’s is a lethal, precise and delicate affair; directed, entirely constructed on skill and a wee bit of luck.

  56. COME ON ARSENAL!

  57. @geo Many of the Scandinavian papers just translate articles from the English ones. sad but true.

  58. Why can’t you compare them Zim?? That’s like saying you can’t compare some of the old Ronaldo’s skills to the new Ronaldo’s skills… They are in the same category (an outstanding volley) so why can’t you compare them? There are the elements of timing, body position and direction and power of each etc. And you can definitely choose which direction you place your overhead volley. Practice is all that’s needed.

  59. I wonder what people think about the hypocrisy abound regarding the question of Arsenal’s defense.

Apparently, after yesterday’s showing, David Luiz is the best defender in the world – if you believe the plunditocracy.

Luiz is said to be the real deal, worth every penny of the £25 million spent to bring him in, can play the ball out of defence, is good at reading the game, intercepts and anticipates well, good in the air, tackles well – and is the sort of world class player that a top top top (Merson talk LOL) top team requires in defence to guarantee titles.

I submit it to you that Laurent Koscielny can do everything they say about Luiz, and he can even do it with panache. The Kos is silky and smooth and his one touch passing out of tight defensive situations is mouth watering. In fact, some of the most spectacular team goals we have scored from counter attacks originated from Koscielny’s interception and/or one touch passing to a red shirt.

Yet because Koscielny came from the other side of the railtracks, or because he plays for Arsenal, or he hasn’t got a Brazilian passport, or he cost £17million less than Luiz – he is swatted away like an annoying fly that has no right to be at the high table of top defensive pairings. He is dismissed as a useless lower leaguer who is contributing to the soft and milky under-belly of the Arsenal.

David Luiz has played one frigging match – and he is the dog’s bollocks. What faecal matter. I’m sure Luiz is a good player and can hold his own, but the sycophancy ala Wayne Rooney’s shinned goal is sickening.

Djourou and Koscielny have done themselves proud this season and they have done Arsenal proud – and long may it be.

  60. Our referee for tomorrow night is an architect in his spare time.

Finsbury, what bearing do you think his being an architect in his spare time might have, if any, on his refereeing? Will he be on the lookout for structurally integral standing legs, well-designed slide tackles, etc? Or am I over-thinking this… is it all just a façade?

  61. And being one of the best players in the world, I’d suggest he could aim an overhead volley.

  62. Nice comment ZimPaul, really can’t wait for this game!

My point of view is that being outplayed for much of the two ties last year will benefit us. Barca think we are a ‘wanna-be’ Barca, but the truth is we have mastered the quick, slick passing football, and it isn’t after playing 12 years as a team together like their players, at most our players have been together for 5 years. Much of that time our team and most influencial players especially have been plagued with injuries, and more often than not at the crucial times of the season. Barca will have wished we met them in the semi’s not the second round. Our team has pace, plenty of energy, and is full of gas this time.

Nasri has by far been the BEST player in the Premiership this season. The fact that Arsenal fans do not seem to notice as his absence hasn’t been costly is a credit to the squad we have.

I did’nt expect Ian Wright to grow some common sense following his previous opinions of Arsenal. Wright would have predicted Liverpool challenging up their with Chelsea and United for the title. A dim view to take, one that was taken by 90% of our expert pundits who we have to listen to.

If Arsenal plays without fear, we can really shit them up. Messi and co already got a glimpse last season.

  63. lol Limpar.

“Nasri has by far been the BEST player in the Premiership this season. The fact that Arsenal fans do not seem to notice as his absence hasn’t been costly is a credit to the squad we have. ”

Chris – massive credit to the squad indeed. Arsh’s return to form couldn’t have come at a better time either.

  64. Darius – Djourou shares those qualities too I think. Some of his passing is sublime. If Gerrard had sprayed some of those about, commentators and pundits would be creaming their pants.

  65. Darius, I was listening to 5 live too and i couldn’t believe what i was hearing.

It was like a punch in the teeth to hear them raving about the guy, yet Kos has shown on various accounts he can become a top CB for Arsenal. Like you said, Luiz is Brazilian, doesn’t play for Arsenal, and he was expensive, he can only be good in their eyes!!

Let them continue to ignore the superiority Arsenal seems to hold in much of our games this season. We killed Chelsea, outplayed Citeh, we are on a fantastic run, the only team left in all 4 competitions, and have a cup final to look forward to. Keep smiling gooners, ignore the shite.

  66. I agree with Messi. Theo is terrifying. This could be his European Cup for the taking.

  67. Regarding tomorrows game – I think there’s a secret weapon that Arsenal have and Barca will not have anticipated, or known how to deal with.

It goes by the name Tech 9 ala Szczesny ala Shezzer.

The young lad has so far had the balls to claim that that No. 1 shirt is his by right. The problem for Barcelona is that by having 2 games that are out of this world, Szczesny could spectacularly announce his arrival. We know he can do the jaw-dropping and agile world class saves, and we know that he marauds around that 18 yard box like his own piece of real estate.

Step forward Tech 9 – your time has come my son.

  68. Darius, you must have been listening to the exact same radio show I was last night as that exact thought went through my mind. Everything they attributed to Luis can be said for Kos.

This lad is a real player and we should be proud that once again we have uncovered a real talent at a fraction of market value.

Luis gave away a penalty last night, if it had gone in Chelskum would have been in real shit!!

  69. Fucking hell. The odds on spurs getting destroyed 4 or 5 tonight are rubbish. I can see why… but still.

  70. Agree with Darius re Kos. Plucked out of nowhere by the boss at less then half what Luiz cost, and what a great signing he’s turning out to be. Wouldn’t trade him for any CB in the league right now, and reckon he will grow from strength to strength at the Arsenal. AW will have a headache when Tommy V returns.

  71. Darius it’s rife isn’t it. Citing double standards, xenophobia, snobbery, elitism is all a waste of breath. You would hope hacks and pundits capable of a unique brainwave can see what is happening. Rooney’s goal was good. But that’s it good. It wasn’t even a premiership great. It’s the massive Man Utd media spin doctors at work. I truly believe that.

The excessive barca respect is something else entirely. It may be just pure and simple spite from journo’s across the sport. I can’t get my head around it.

Anyway tomorrow night we’ll flip them right up. It would be fantastic if Wilshire or Walcott managed to finish them off with an average overhead kick.

  72. This is the hardest match any team could face at the moment. It will be very tough to beat Barca over 90 and will take a miracle over 180 mins. To win the final we have to beat them so it is better now than later with a full calendar. (although the final is only 90 mins)

We should play our regular game and make sure we have all the big game players (like Arshavin) in the starting 11. Keep playing the same football and not do what Spain did in the World Cup Final and think we can suddenly become Bolton and bully them about. We can’t.

VP is exceptional and it is hard remembering how we survive without him. If he did not spend more than half of each season on the bench we would have had silverware over the last 6 years. That is not to do down any other player or Cesc, but he does make us look like the finished item up front, where it hurts.

We are still the only team left in all competitions and that is the one thing that all the pundits can’t argue with. Lets enjoy it.

  73. Geo i disagree you can’t compare ronaldo’s skills with cristiano.. ronaldo decieved his opponents leaving them stumped and stupified where as cristiano does lots of step overs but is rigid and defenders read them well most times than not, what he uses to get passed people is his pace and power he explodes past defenders.. he doesn’t possess the same magic as the r9..

  74. It’s complete and utter laziness on the pundits behalf. They don’t do their homework and then when the inevitable question of ‘What about Arsenal for the title this year’ comes, they fire off the same tired old ‘They’re close, just need another centre-back and a keeper’ answer.

Worst part is it is taken as gospel by not only other pundits but OUR OWN FANS! When in reality any other manager in the league would be creaming themselves at the idea of having our fully-fit defence.

  75. You’ve just compared them though Kitchen Sink!! That was my point – how can you say that you can’t compare 2 volleys if you can’t compare 2 players’ dribbling techniques…?

I agree that he doesn’t possess the same magic, for sure. But why can’t you compare them? Seems ridiculous to me…

  76. *can* compare dribbling techniques

  77. Exactly Markus

  78. we’re richer than chelsea now apparently… maybe we should should swallow them up and sell off the old players as scrap? no need I guess, probably be more fun to watch them slowly rot down in the europa leagues spots.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been knocked down a peg in Russia’s richlist by Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov.

Usmanov has pushed Abramovich, the billionaire owner of Chelsea, out of third position on the list of Russia’s richest people.

According to Finans Magazine, while Abramovich’s wealth grew during the year to $17.1bn (£10.6bn), the fortunes of his rivals grew faster. Usmanov’s total wealth swelled to $19.9bn (£12.4bn), propelling him up the list from seventh place last year.

It is the first time Abramovich has been outside the top three.

  79. Comparing things gives us an idea on who the best players in the world are(for example). This relates to almost everything in life, so if you can’t compare things, how do you ever determine who/what is the best?

So are you saying that we can’t compare players to other players? Or managers to others?? We do it every day, and we do it a lot when making opinions on football. Wenger is the best manager because of the way he’s gone about his business, as opposed to Harry Redknapp for example…

  80. I think that Messi’s comments about Theo are based on speed and control. If you look at Messi and all the Barcelona players to a degree they are phenomenally quick footed, not necessarily very fast, but small and many strides, confusing the defense, giving the attacker more options and just out maneuvering them on the ball. Theo has this skill, but with a longer stride, which makes him much faster, he is a player that can take them.
Are weak points will be defensively marking and clearing, our strengths will be going forward. There is not much you can do about either except choose a team that plays to our strengths.

  81. i just explained why Geo one uses the same technique but not to the same effect.. all players tap a ball but not with the same quality of touch..

  82. Exactly KS, you compared the 2 and highlighted the difference. I know what you’re saying, and they are very different styles, but just making my point, even to determine that they have different styles, you have to compare them.

  83. That is true KS you did go on to compare.

I’d say that with proper ronaldo, it’s more immediately obvious that he could beat anybody on his day. Were as lesser ronaldo was just a shiny faced fuck, that looked like a complete twat when doing his dancing stepovers.

So for me it’s a tough one but I’d go for the original brazillian Ronaldo.

  84. Anyway, an irrelivant argument. RvP’s volley was better than Rooney’s, fact ;-)

  85. Last year, if I recall correctly, Barca played that dude Maxwell at left back to help deal with Theo’s pace because he was a little faster that Abidal. Might be enforced this time since Abidal may have to cover for Puyol. Either way Theo will be up against (at least) Maxwell pace-wise.

Overall I have a really good feeling about this first leg. We’ve never been in a better position to face Barca, 2002 final included.

  86. very well Geo we agree their styles are different and thats why i feel there is a populer illusion of similarity but their not comparable..

  87. Maxwell was shit when he came on. He got ripped over and over by Theo. I hope they do line him up against Theo again. Hopefully Guardiola will give Maxwell backing to put it right and then Theo can hammer him from kick off this time.

That’s the reason why I’m putting a tenner on Theo to bag 2 goals.

  88. Word

Fortunately for us we are not Usmanov’s play thing, so he can be as rich as he likes and it matters not a fig, not to me, you or him.

This is important, because being a toy Chelsea itself is one of the poorest clubs in the World (the poorest is Man City) . It is the owners who breaths life into these play things. No Premiere league club could keep up with that spending without a Sugar Daddy. They still do owe the owners.

Arsenal makes its own money and does not spend it on transfer fees, that is one of the things that make it one of the only ‘rich’ clubs.

Fuck Usmanov he is a minority shareholder.

  89. Garrincha is the brasillian master of dribble!

  90. KS – that is often that misconception, I was just using them as an example… Watching that video brought back a lot of memories though… Thinking that there would never be another player like him. There isn’t, but i’d say Messi is as effective, if not more…

  91. I feel more psoitive about this game than I was when we faced Barca last year.i’m by no means certain we’ll win.But we are in better shape .I dont see us being rolled over and the hungrier side will win.

  92. GEO, I submit you can’t compare the two volleys because although the method is apparently and superficially similar they are different ‘types’ of goals. There is no way Rooney’s goal will be repeated by him once per decade, let alone once per season. In fact all in all I don’t know why players attempt this because it works about 3 or 4 times a season in 380 odd games and maybe 800-900 goals. It is a rare lucky shot, something like Beckham’s famed 50-yarder or Maradona’s briliant slight of hand. RvP’s is, on the other hand, under close scrutiny from a defender or two, a classic volley in the pantheon of striker’s weapons, used and perfected by the best; skilled, precise and directed, it is comparable with other low volleys like that.

The other thing is that, no, you can’t direct an overhead volley partly because strikers don’t practice it enough to be precise, but mostly because the degree of chance involved in very high. Try and direct an overhead volley into the corner of a net from a deflected 35-yard cross and see!

  93. Theo will rip both dudes put on to stop him and then square for VanPersie standing in acres of Puyol-free space. That’s why I’ll put a tenner on VP to bag two goals.

  94. gunnerluc i like that garrincha vid …there have been many great dribblers but nothing before and since has moved like this..

  95. Limpar @ 12:03

This ref could be exhausted and ready for bed before kick off.
He’ll be impressed with the evolving character of TNHOF, as opposed to the crumbling ediface that is the Camp Gnu.

There’s nothing wrong with some beautiful crafted fenestration, but I hope he is not ‘mugged’ by Peekaboo.

  96. a style they call ginga

  97. Zim – At school all those years ago, I spent about half an hour of every sunny lunchtime recieving crosses from our best winger and trying overhead kicks. I got better and better at them, beginning to direct them to areas of the goal more often than not. And i even had a wierd tick that meant i always went up right foot first, scissoring, meaning i always connected with my left (weaker foot). They can be practiced and honed, even by a mere mortal like myself. So Rooney who has outstanding technique, should be able to aim them to one side of a goalie…

What i was saying was, that RvP’s volley was from a much rarer situation (like you say with the 2 defenders around him, running onto the ball etc etc), whereas Rooney probably practiced that style of volley far easier than RvP could have practiced his. RvP’s was a better goal in my opinion for the reasons stated above. I think they are comparable, purely because they were outrageously good technique and both regarded as volleys of the season.

  98. On the whole, player comparisons (like ‘ratings after the match’) are all bullshit too; it’s a matter of personal preference and perspective, and it all takes place in a team context that are themselves not comparable; there is simply no yardstick by which such things can be measured.

But, there are exceptions to this general rule. Tendulkar is a an exception, as was Brian Lara, and the trio of great spinners Warne, Kumble and Murali.

Rooney is a very great player. RvP is a different, and equally very great player. If I am being neutral I would say, for me, about equal. Rooney’s low centre of gravity and running with the ball is exceptional; RvP’s left foot, improvised clever thinking and passing game is obviously better. At the moment he is the better goal striker too. But he plays in a better team.

  99. They can be practiced and honed, even by a mere mortal like myself (and I’m no superstar that’s for sure!!).

  100. I prefer RvP’s goal, but I can admire Rooney’s.

  101. Kitchen

I don’t deny o fenomeno was awesome because he is although I think, a lot like the lesser Ronaldo, his physical strenght was also really important, his form after his multiple injuries shows that. Just that without Garrincha the dribble might not be what it is today who by the way was playing drunk and with some kind of malformation. I think his knees were crooked.

  102. “On the whole, player comparisons (like ‘ratings after the match’) are all bullshit too; it’s a matter of personal preference and perspective, and it all takes place in a team context that are themselves not comparable; there is simply no yardstick by which such things can be measured. ”

It’s all personal preference and perspective yes, so can we not compare things with our own personal preference and then decide who we think played the best, is the best, scored the best goal? As we always say, it is a matter of opinion… But you can compare opinions all day!

  103. Garrincha was the ‘best’ dribbler imo ;-)

  104. Markus you may be right. I’d happily lose a tenner for that to come true.

I’m with KS on this gunnerluc garrincha looks good, but Ronaldo is the better in my opinion. I’m not talking about the old “you couldn’t do that nowadays” argument, I just mean Ronaldo’s feet are quicker and more creative. Ronaldo’s awareness of space and time would make stephen hawkins fucking jealous.

  105. Quickness of thought, quickness of passing, quickness of movement, quickness of controlling, quickness of closing, quickness of reacting, quickness of attacking, quickness of defending, the quickness of being quicker than your quickest opponent

  106. “Ronaldo’s awareness of space and time would make stephen hawkins fucking jealous.” hahahaha!

  107. yes Gunnerluc i agree he was part of the formation of great dribblers ..

but as i suggested earlier the r9 had strength and pace but that wasn’t his bread and butter for going past people as it is with cristiano, hence he was a vastly superior dribbler..

  108. GEO, for me, at school all those years ago, I got so good at keepie-uppies that once I passed about 75, very little could stop me continuing for say 30 minutes to an hour, and losing count, except concentration and being too adventurous. I never once used keepie-uppies in a game though.

I also practiced the curled shot to the far post about a million times in my backyard, aiming for a spot on the wall, and to great effect in a few games.

Mainly I found, once I was ‘rated’ as a striker, I scored through instinct and so used different methods to relax, including joking with the defenders.

  109. “Ronaldo’s awareness of space and time would make stephen hawkins fucking jealous.”

Love it!! To make it clear i wasn’t suggesting Garrincha was better than o fenomeno just that he was at the genesis of it! Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Messi, Cristiano took his art and developped it to make it their own.

  110. Warne, Kumble and Murali + Saqlain? (Inventor of the ‘doosra’. And the ‘teesra’. Serious injuries, so he left the game early.)

  111. I know Zim, abviously it’s very different playing with mates at school, but you know what I mean…! I thought I’d never score one in a game, but then scored 2 in one match. It can happen! But you’re right, instinct takes over for many strikers. I found that in matches, if it wasn’t instinct, and I had too much time to think about it, I’d often fluff chances… Never really composed enough to try tricks etc… But if a cross came in from the left, i’d try overhead kicks almost every time!

  112. While at school I mainly practiced being knocked:
    1) Out
    2) From pillar to post
    3) On my arse
    4) all over

As I was a scrawny bazzer. I did all my growing after school, so much so that I have even got me some pubes now.

But still to this day I can get knocked all over a football pitch, thing is now I can take a knock better than anyone I know. And I can give them back a lot better too, which is nice.

  113. It is all perspective because to cite an example, I intensely dislike both Ronaldos, the lesser and greater; and I find them obnoxious, overrated, and uncouth. I liked Maradona though, a lot, and rate him as the best dribbler of the century. I never saw Goerge Best, but people said he was better.

  114. “I did all my growing after school, so much so that I have even got me some pubes now.” Els you crack me up!

Maradonna and George Best were amazing dribblers. there’s a great goal from his later years that I’ll have sneaky look for by George Best… just an example, but lovely stuff!

  115. hahaha Zim you know the song “haters gonna hate, ballers gonna ball”

  116. Another legend, modern footballer owe a lot, forgot how good he was!

  117. I got this stat off BakwardsGooner on twitter, but apparently in the 7.5 league games they’ve played together, the team featuring DJ LK has only conceded 8 shots on target!

  118. Puskas! What a legend.

  119. @ Markus | February 15, 2011 at 12:54 pm |

Laziness comes into it, they can’t be bothered to watch us. But when they do, they watch with prejudiced eyes.
    ***
    @ eleanor
I agree with you about the importance of the CL for our status and our finances.

  120. Thanks Geo Thanks. haha.

  121. That’s a heartwarming statistic, Gadget!

  122. “It will be very tough to beat Barca over 90 and will take a miracle over 180 mins. ”

I just do not accept this as reasonable. If we were playing Leeds Utd over two legs I do not think they would need a ‘miracle’ to win.

We are more equal with barca than Leeds are with us.

It’s just defeatism. If any of our players even thought like that I would have them out of the squad immediately and on their way out.

  123. Saqlain? Hmmm good point. I shall cunningly use this new information to impress my cricket journalist son, who seems (to me) to know every fact and statistic known to cricket, often using tricks like “But look Dad, how about that late afternoon session on day three of the ’83 Lahore test on a slowish seaming pitch, incredibly hot day, and the West Indies tail put on around 90 in 65 balls with bla bla bla ….” Yeah, sure, as if I’d remember, even if I knew. How he knows is mystery to me, because he’s only 26 now but seems to ‘remember’ cricket matches from the 70s. Saqlain you say, inventor of the doosra and teesra (um … whatever … I’ll fox him now).

  124. Lovely clip of best that geo. Looks very good, but that’s obviously from his time stateside. I hate to say it but how good was the opposition?

I don’t want to start looking like a massive fan of Ronaldo (the prototype) but he really is head and shoulders above anything else I’ve seen.

  125. o’ fenomeno

  126. I couldn’t get that Puskas clip to work. Darn.

  127. I’ve just typed puskas in youtube and it was one of the first result

  128. Zimbabwe to win the world cup! Now that’s I call would call a miracle.

  129. Yeah a great goal, but it was against some american team back in the day so not the toughest defence! I have a special love for George Best, as that is my full name! Sort of named after him, sort of named after my mum’s dad… That was the first good goal of his i could find on youtube (at work so cant trawl through loads..).

  130. I remember seeing an early Pele world cup match on one of those ‘classic matches’, still in his teens perhaps, maybe early 20s; he was kicked to smithereens, actually to injury; the ref kept looking in another direction. Who was it against? Uruguay? A European side? Anyway, robbery. they were already scared of the young man. Brazil lost as I recall.

  131. If you can’t beat ‘em, kick ‘em.

  132. Nasri’s goal against Porto was of the same caliber as Best’s, and against better competition.

  133. Very good shout nola. Similar jinking run, drops of the shoulder… Against a tough Porto side.

  134. ZimPaul.

The red and yellow cards in football were introduced primarily as a consequence of Pele being kicked out of games or hammered and beaten literally into submission.

The legend of a man was too good and the only way opposition could stop him was to beat the shit out of him. It took the constant pelting of a player for the game to change significantly with red and yellow cards. I wonder what it will take for the caveman like attitude of English football to change?

But my subjective list of the best foot ballers this world has ever seen are:

Tier 1 (those who could win a football match single-handedly without anyone’s help)

    1. Mr.Edson Arantes do Nascimento
    2. Diego Armando Maradona
    3. Lionel Messi

The 3 above are nothing short of being pure genius..and anyone who tries to suggest that Cronaldo and Rooney can lace these guys’ boots are just sad.

Tier 2 (mere mortals who will change the course of a game by grabbing it by the scruff of the neck)

    1. Sesc Fabregas (he shamelessly says)
    2. Zinadine Zidane
    3. Johan Cruyff

  135. Controvesy Darius. No Pele! ;-)

  136. Intersting debate on the two vollies; there is no doubt that both were excellently taken goals (although Rooney’s did appear to hit his shin). What I would say howver though, is that Rooney’s goal was “there to be hit”. It was pretty much the only option he had aside from ignoring the ball. RvP’s goal was not like that. He could have (as most would) have attempted to control the ball. Rooney’s was set nicely for his excellent overhead kick’, where RvP’s was far more difficult.

  137. Darius to the 6 you’ve just stated, I would add:
Di Stefano, Puskas, beckenbauer and Platini

  138. He’s number one els! Darius got all fancy with his full name… ;-)

  139. and our own bergkamp of course!

  140. darius how could you miss out scholes and gary neville..

  141. Bergkamp would be right up there for me. My favourite player of all time.

  142. Gareth Bale?

  143. Pele is an interesting one. An excellent player without doubt, but he never played outside of Brazil. For that reason alone I think Maradona deserves the position at No1. He almost single handedly won the 86 world cup, and transformed Napoli from nothing into Serie A champions and UEFA cup winners.

  144. I agree with goonerandy.

  145. I know I was aving a little joke.

Gareth Bale’s a good shout though.

  146. He did go to the NY Cosmos but indeed he did not get tested in the best league of Europe

  147. @Geo | 2:52, Are you Richard Keys in disguise??

  148. Bergkamp is up there for me as well, mainly because rather than doing it single-handedly he somehow made the whole team perform better when he was on his game. He scored some fantastic goals also of course!

  149. As it’s been mentioned. It’s all personal preference and any list of players given should be who YOU get most enjoyment out of watching.

    For me it would be
    Robbie Keane
    Veron (Man Ure)
    Schevchenko (Chelsea)

Nothing makes me smile more than those lads. I’ve got tingles down my spine (shudders).

  150. Interestingly though nobody ever lists players with defensive duties.

I would be tempted to list Vieira. I loved watching him. Absolutely amazing player.

  151. Borges Spinelli aka Thierry Bergkamp-Wright

Guys, I’ve just found a recent interview of Busquets on a leading spanish sports site. In line with his teammates, unlike the British media, had lots of praises for us. Busquets said: “They (Arsenal) have a philosophy very similar to ours. They are constantly behind the ball, with very swift passes and have world class players, though a younger squad. I think it’s the best football for the spectators, because our (similar) offensive game display”.

He also had this to say about our Fábregas: “He is a player who likes to have the ball, likes to get involved and has a great view of the game and a great shot. I play with him in the (national team) and he is very difficult to stop”.

  152. One of my favorite players was Lothar Matthaus.

  153. KS in pic 11 of 14 it looks like Nas and Clichy aving a bit of a do to me.

  154. Song will scare the shit outta them this year.

  155. Broken Buiscuits me thinks Markus.

  156. Robbie keen??? LMAO!

I agree about Bergkamp being on that Tier 2 list.

In support of Pele – you can’t ignore that he was a star in a world cup at 17 years and at a time in 1958 when the football establishment had no place for men of colour – Well, until he unleashed his magic in Sweden.

Regardless of whether he just played in Brazil – his individual skill and mezmerizing play was untouchable…and yes – he flattered to deceive when he pulled off a few “Rooney overhead kicks”. Shame on Pele for not being as good as Rooney.

Maradona too cemented his name in history with his no-nonsense approach to bitch slapping entire teams.. Mexico 1986 was one of the best tournaments in my view because of Maradona. I was living in Dubai at the time and remember posters of him soon after the world cup in his blue Napoli outfit outselling everything in the local souks.

But for me, the player who best executed the overhead kicks was Jean Pierre Papin. I could watch that guy do his magic time and time again.

  157. @Darius
Your top list looks good. Although you forgot include my other great compatriots like: Zico, Sócrates and Rivelino, Jairzinho. And even Romário, c’mon now!

  158. Dennis Bergkamp, the greatest team player ever ever ever.

  159. Yep. I myself have seen Busquets trying to stop Cesc in several of Spain’s games. Failed every time.

  160. I can’t say I like watching Maradona. I appreciate his talent but I would go out of my way to omit him from my list as, as an englishman I think he’s a cheat.

I couldn’t narrow down to 3 players and I think I lack a great knowledge of a fair few players listed here so far. Heathen I know. I’d say my knowledge beyond the 70′s is seriously lacking.

Therefore my top few would be…
    Pele
    Ronaldo
    Bergkamp
    Cruyff
    Vieira
Messi (although he needs to sustain what he’s shown)
    Henry

  161. Master of the overhead kick = Hugo Sanchez.

  162. thats true Els but he’s looking quite monstrous with 40 goals and 19 assists this season.. we are gradually finding our feet so we can finish them..and this match promises to be worth 5 el’classicos..

  163. Exhibit A

  164. My favourite player of all time is Robin Van Persie

  165. Well preferences, and mine are, with apologies to all the purists out there, these are the players who gave me the most joy.
    Thierry Henry
    Liam Brady
    Johan Cruyff
    Bergkamp
    Maradona
    Peter Ndlovu
    Adam Ndlovu
Madinda Ndlovu (incidentally all 3 brothers played for the national side at the same time, we beat Egypt and Cameroon in those days).

  166. Borges I posted this one last night..

it showcases some of his goals and his ability to do what alot of top players can only dream of..

  167. Oops, Robin van Persie comes in at # 3

  168. Man, I forgot Socrates. #4.

  169. Exhibit B (Zico versus The Sheeps of New Zealand)

  170. Yeah I watched that clip about 10 times this morning KS. He’s special and yet a knobhead.

  171. Messi doesn’t belong on this list because he is in the middle of his career. He played a small part in their first CL victory and hasn’t accomplished much with Argentina. He has another decade, conceivably at the top level, to cement his legacy.

But Zidane, to me, is in the top three. He won titles, CL, Euro, and WC as his team’s captain and best player. Iconic headers v. Brazil. One of the great goals of the CL to win it. How I wish his header v. Italy had gone in and sealed the victory–that would have been legend. Instead, he lost his cool, headbutted that idiot before the whole world and his team couldn’t convert the penalties without him (and Henry–why was he substituted?). It could/should have been a storybook ending but for the finger tips of Buffon. But, his career speaks for itself. The best player since Maradona; we could argue about Cruyff and on pure class Bergkamp, but all the others don’t meet that intersection between physical attributes and technical skill, success in the game, and leadership/competitive spirit. To my mind, those are all important ingredients.

  172. That’s it isn’t it Zim. It’s far too hard to pick a top players list. I named mine and then instantly thought well if a current player such as messi can get in were do Cesc and RvP go. And for fuck sakes I forgot Nelson Vivas.

  173. Loving that tackle at 1.04 in the zico exhibit Borges.

  174. can anyone explain in their right mind how Laporta can say “It is an issue of justice” that cesc has to go back to barca..

  175. In terms of personal joy, of course, Bergkamp, Henry, and Viera have to be high up there as an Arsenal fan. In world football, the Brazilian greats have a special place in my heart.

But on Barca, I think Song is a much more important player than even last year. Walcott is better. Nasri has become deadly. RvP, our talisman, apart from Cesc, wasn’t part of the encounter. Cesc is back to playing well and has even more of a point to prove–their offers for him were derisive insults to his value and perhaps he would like to show them that in meaningful terms. Wilshere may also have a major part to play. So, I don’t think they have faced a team with the attacking speed and power from midfield forward since they played us. And we are more balanced and capable in attack now than then.
Their defense is keeping the ball, but I think it could crumble if put under pressure. We saw glimpses of this. I hope we surprise them early with a quick, ruthless, counterattacking goal and then proceed to expose them as they push forward and frustrate them by keeping the ball close to 50% of the time and quickly winning it back. They aren’t used to teams putting their defense under that sort of pressure, perhaps.

Our own defense is in better shape, apart from the loss of Sagna. Our young goalkeeper really has a chance to prove his readiness for the big stage.

This is going to be so exciting! Gunners to win and put some real questions into the minds of Barca for the return leg.

  176. Limestone, the team that got spanked at the Nou Camp last year:

    01 Almunia
    03 Sagna
    05 Vermaelen
    18 Silvestre (Eboue 63)
    22 Clichy
    02 Diaby
    07 Rosicky (Eduardo 73)
    08 Nasri
    14 Walcott
    15 Denilson
    52 Bendtner
    Substitutes:
    21 Fabianski, 27 Eboue, 30 Traore, 31 Campbell, 37 Eastmond, 32 Merida, 09 Eduardo

  177. Exhibit C:

    My last video.

In my view, the third goal from the end, is much better than Rooney’s much lauded one from the weekend.

  178. Limestone oh yeah. Many many reasons for our players to be up for it. If they do it against Barca to some that is the epitome of a class player. I’d like to throw Bendtner into the mix, he was fucking great against them in the last tie. He’ll be another player up for it. And he does have that knack doesn’t he.

We are looking good and they will be shitting. Barca have so much to lose. And that they will!

    Come on!!

@KS, no is the answer to that. They really think they are entitled to him. It’s a warped way of looking at the fact that they let us have him, and obviously didn’t value him at all.

  179. Els cesc is a genius and it would take some real knob heads not to see it.. What he was doing for arsenal at seventeen was pure poetry, Torres said he felt cesc is the best player in spain but is always overlooked cos he plays in engerlandt, what i hope to see tomorrow is him showing that he is better than iniesta and xavi together…

  180. Limestone my friend – you make a very good case for Zizou and an equally good case against Leo Messi.

  181. This is definitely the best Arsenal squad I have ever seen.

  182. Jean Pierre Papin? I seem to remember he scored from a diving header with his nose inches off the ground for Milan. Jaw-dropping, the way he put his head in.

  183. KS statistically cesc is far superior and nobody could argue at all with that. As you say there is obviously there is something to do loving players in the home land. Let’s hope cesc is up for it in that way.

But most importantly good use of “knob head”.

  185. Frank yes definately.

Squad head and shoulders above anything I have ever seen.
First 11 not quite yet, but very soon and with the potential to far surpass the invincibles.

  186. This time around, our line-up will include an in-form Robin van Persie, a fortress-like combo of a central defensive duo of Djourou + Koscielny. And the pulse of our team, the dynamic trio consisting of Wilshere, Fábregas and Song. Not to mention our deadly offensive maestro Arshavin/or an even deadlier Nasri. My friends, one has no qualms opining with pride, that, Barça will be meeting their equals in the Arsenal of 2011.

All answers will be revealed 24hrs from now. Mark my words.

  187. Limpar. I can’t read .chmt files.

  188. Borges are barca going to bottle it just before kick off? ;-)

  189. Frank since the beginning of last season thats the one thing i’ve vocally agreed with you on..

    __arsenal__

  190. Els, pardon me, what does that expression mean?

  191. Oh sorry. I was being pedantic.

You specified 24 hours which would bring the time to a few hours before kick off. I said are they going to ‘bottle it’. As in, are they going to lose their nerve before kick off.

Not really funny. But especially when it’s further explained.

  192. So Borges are you Braillian?

Can you explain the situation of Wellington DaSilva’s rep (or supposed lack of) in Brazil?

  193. Are you blind, Borges?

  194. @Els
    I erroneously typed 24hrs rather than 27hrs.

I don’t live in Brasil, so I’m not too familiar with most of the happenings. From what i understood, Wellington Silva was a highly-regarded, 16 yr old, promising hopeful at Fluminense. After we bought him, the team changed coach. The new guy (Ramalho, whom interestingly, also dropped our Denilson after we’d acquired his services) decided Wellington was to play no further part in his plans – subsequently pushing him further down the pack as the 6th choice striker.

My guess is, because he was made to feel unwanted (starting just 2 games in 6 months), his form began to suffer. Ramalho claimed Wellington’s head was no longer with the team. The latter retorted that the fault, was, in fact, with the manager (sour grapes for losing promising player). Blah blah, blah.

The rest is history as they say.

  195. Excuse me, Frank?

  196. Limpar, are you favouring Eboue at right back…?

  197. Limpar,

That is epic! By far the best way I have ever seen our formation described. Not even a lengthy diatribe on the principles of total football and pass and move could come close to that. Well done to you!

In other news, is everyone else finding their minds consumed by this match? I’m literally struggling to think of other things. Last night during our Valentine’s dinner I said to my lady friend, “God I really am having a hard time thinking of anything………………….but you. you of course”

She paused, sighed, and said “you were gonna say the Barcelona match werent you?”

  198. How much time did that team sheet take, Limpar?

  199. Nice analysis from the arsenalfcblog

  200. Interesting reading from the Swiss Rambler on Chelsea’s position with respect to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play:
    http://swissramble.blogspot.com/2011/02/chelseas-financial-fair-play-challenge.html

Strange that Arsenal does not feature in the top 10 shirt sponsorship deals…

  201. Manchester City are beginning to look a little desperate now against Greek minnows, Aris Salonika. Unable to trouble the home side, they’ve just brought on Balotelli to assist Tevez, Dzeko. Ah, with a forward four line-up including Yaya Toure costing £122m, City are looking rather toothless.

  202. peacefrog

It’s not a surprise that we’re not in the top 10 shirt deals – ours was good for the club at the time but it’s crap now.

    YW

  203. Els accused you of being Braillian, Borges. I assumed that means that you are blind although I believe that a number of sighted people are able to read Braille too.

  204. From twitter:
“Chim Chimenne Chim Chimenne Chim Cim Cerroo We’ve got Cesc Fabregas and we got him from you”

  205. if anyone wants to watch spuds v milan i found an awesome veetle stream
    http://molkevision.mo.funpic.de/

  206. Salonika, city of ghosts… Once the largest Jewish city in the Mediterranean, polyglot cosmopolitan Ottoman Greek Balkan city. For that legacy alone I hope they defeat the oiligarchs.

  207. Milan look a bit weak at the back. GK is flustered by Crouch, maybe concussed on his pointy head.

  208. This looks bad. they put that guy in the recovery position.

  209. I can’t believe how bad AC have been so far, now their goalie has gone.

spurs could be the luckiest buggers alive if the premiership spanks serie A’s arse tonight. this is not a compliment to tottenhams ability but the italians poor attitude towards an important competitive game.

  210. Is it ok to like Flamini again for this tie?

  211. Limestone

And home to Aris, who have now gone 40 years since losing a home European tie.

    YW

  212. We can hope he plays well and still dislike him, I guess.

  213. spurs will win. Crouch will score and everybody will kiss Redknapps butt, not least his son that writes for err cant rememeber…

Seriouse though if Milan cannot beat Spurs with the forward lineup they got, then damn somehting is seriousley wrong in milan.

  214. Regarding shirt deals when we once again are to negotiate that( is it in 5 years time?) i think We wil break all previouse shirt deal records though. Arsenal will be a very very attractive merchandise in 5 years time…

  215. No it is not all right to like Flamini, you don’t lie to my face for a whole year sod off when I need you the most ad ask that I like you. Admittedly you don’t have to hate him either – bit childish IMO.

So lets drop the Tottenham hate they are a damn good side, who have overachieved this season I thought they would be further back and not dukig it out with Chelsea and Manchester City. Worryingly for our rivalry stats they appear to be well managed and have ambition and will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with.

  216. shocking setup from milan coach 2 defensive midfielders and a center back in midfield at the same time using only ibra and robinho when he normally plays those two with cassano or pato..

    no creation and echoes fear..

  217. @poodle I think its 2014 for the shirt deal and 2021 for the stadium naming rights.

  218. how can Milan play as crap as they do? they suppose to trash Tottenham :(

  219. Klon, dont be a mug and come on an Arsenal site offering positives for Sp*ds!!!
You will get short change methinks!

  220. mind you it would be fun to meet them in the next round. tottenham that is.

  221. no wonder Bale was so good against Inter if they played as crap as their neighbours! slow, sluggish, old meh…

  222. Remi, oh I’m sorry I did not realise common sense and objectivity were frowned upon I shall make corrections to my future posts. *

*This post is dripping with sarcasm in case you had not noticed.

  223. kitchen sink @8.18 pm – they have bought into the Bale hype. Italian teams tend to go for the ‘safety first’ approach wherever possible!

  224. Dire display from Milan. Apart from the first 10 minutes, Tottenham hasn’t really put them under serious pressure. It is just poor play from them and a poor setup. It is obvious Milan can get forward at will if they had some creativity in midfield to organize their attack.

Dire game all around. Boring boring Tottenham! Clearly they are missing Modric and “The Bestest Player in the World”

  225. is it now i can say Lennon great running but no end product? cant cross and no brain? Or would that be to rude?

  226. If you wouldn’t mind Klon

  227. If anybody wants to know why we complain about doomers, even after we churn out beautiful football week after week, just take a look at the AC Milan team against Sp*ds in the first half. They were truly shite. Absolutely clueless. They don’t know how to construct an attack, they are slow and pedestrian in the midfield (yes, I know, a Le Grove term) and they are struggling against a 4th premiership side minus key players, the like of who, in their pomp, 10 years ago, they would have contemptuously swept aside in the San Siro.

If I was an AC Milan fan, I would be a serious doomer.

  228. did Burton say the Milan GK was faking injury because he is afraid of the Spurs? or something like that?

  229. What a crap game, and to think one of Arsenal of Barca will go out and one of these 2 teams will go through.

  230. Reserves just came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Wolves. Unlucky not to win, in the end.

  231. Pato on for Seedorf. Some youthful energy, but still who is going to create anything from the midfield?

I remember when we defeated Milan 2-0 with that great, great goal from Fabregas. That was an accomplishment. People said they were getting old then, four years ago, but there were some class players all over the pitch. Defeating this group of plodders plus Ibra and Robinho won’t seem like much of an achievement.

  232. milan have been pathetic
everyone behind the ball whenever possbile..just backing off letting spurs dictate
we could have done with playing these bums, it would have been 4-0 at half time…

i know im on my own on this one (as is normally the case ;) ) but wrighty gets a hard time in my opinion..some ppl are just too senstive..
anyone remember what wrighty was like when he played for us?? he was exactley the same..cocky, arrogant, outspoken, big headed, didnt give a fuck who he upset or who he pissed off..wrightys just wrighty..
he got rioch the sack, wenger had a hard time with him, george was the only manager who could control him and thats only cos he let him do what he wanted..but he scored the goals so nobody cared..he had a gold tooth for christs sake. that says everything, even with all the money flying about it todays game i dont see many players about with gold teeth…
hes outspoken, talks rubbish , but he always has done and you wanna see him off camera when we score, he goes nuts, jumps up and down on the chairs and screams in the studio..total nut pot..
    he dont bother me…

  233. the scary thing is that with Bale and Modric back this tottenham team will crush Milan unless they step up several notches, thas how crap they are.

  234. bendtners better than ibra..
ibra’s so fucking over rated, lazy shit bag only good in shit leagues or when hes got 10 world class players around him..

  235. Did someone just try to advocate being objective? This is football, klon. The one area of life where it is ok – required in fact – to be biased, partisan, blinkered, one eyed and utterly unshakeable in support of your team and hatred for your rivals and enemies.
Spurs are shite, hateful and their manager is stupid.
    Simple really.

  236. wonder if they condemn that tackle in the papers or if thats is a “ard mans tackel too”

  237. Flamini got the ball I suppose

  238. Don’t care if it’s Spurs, Flamini confirms he’s a c*nt.

  239. Oh dear – that was fucking horrible from Flamini. Don’t want to see that happen to anyone. Even a Spud. Regardless of what I just said.
Well, I wouldn’t shed a tear if it happened to Joey Barton, Martin Taylor or Ryan Shawcross. Or Phil Neville.

  240. The most action we’ve seen all game is when the ball has been dead–some argy bargy. My respect for Gattuso has just soared–getting into it with Spud coaching staff! Unbelievable.

  241. Or Scholes or Fletcher.

  242. question is steww will the press now say that was a horrid tackle but that Bartons was ok? probably

  243. Limestone – especially nice as I think it was Joe Jordan. Ex Manc and Ex Bristol City manager which is about as low as you can get.

  244. But yes Corluka looked like he was passing out with pain. If thats not broken or dislocated or anything hes the luckiest guy alive..

  245. poodle, I now no longer read the footy pages or listen to the sports news on the radio so it won’t affect me. However I suspect we all know how they will react and they will definitely point out that he is ex Arsenal.

  246. Wow Gattusso is on fire!

  247. Hehe Steww, you got me chuckling. Remi water under the bridge mate.

Is Gattuso trying to get sent off or wtf is his problem? Milan have come to life now, they have enough talent in their attackers to create something – screw the midfield.

  248. Klon – as long as you do want spuds to lose. Well, not just lose but either get thumped or lose by a really unlucky narrow scoreline.

  249. I just cannot belive Milan is that crap! its just incredible. They so undangerous its embarrasing. With that front row they should score.

  250. Raul has scored for Schalke 04

    Schalke 04 1 – Valencia 1

Just checked his age he’s 33 and spent 16 years with real Madrid hot damn!

ps – LOL at Gattuso’s reaction to the yellow.

  251. i knew it! heroe Crouch, the best striker in England :p

  252. milan are shit

  253. This is weird to watch. We are so used to a team with intelligence, patience, guile and invention that watching AC Milan trying to batter their way through is horrible.
    Oh bollocks they scored.

  254. Good goal

  255. undangerous, I think you should take out a patent on that word poodle.

Sigh Milan are their own worst enemy, you dont dive in on Lennon doucheface, argh! Such a cheap goal.

  256. I can say now that Tottenham will go to the next round, they wont go out until they meet another English team or Barcelona…

  257. Well look at the bright side guys, the further into the CL Spurs goes the less chance it is for them to get into the top 4 again this year. And we all know what that means.

  258. I’m so sick of it all I’ve put Birmingham / Newcastle on.
0 – 2 to Newcastle. I really fucking detest Pardew. And Mcliesh. Wish they could both lose.

  259. Real Madrid might have something to say about that. This tie is far from over still a whole other game to play.

  260. Is robinho still on? is Pato still on? ive seen Ibra but just cos hes taken crap descisions all nite.

  261. Ray Wilkins is a terrible commentator. Terrible

  262. A truly shocking AC Milan side. Garbage.

  263. yeh but can anyone see Tottenham loose at home? Starting with Bale, modric and vdv? Milan looks like they dont have it in them.

  264. Gattuso has gone crazy. Jordan should be

  265. The decline of Italian football eh? I remember the days where an English team beating an Italian team in Italy was a rare and special occasion. Now every Tom Dick and Harry’s doing it.

Ah well, Serie A how far you’ve fallen.

I love brawls! Go on Gatty!

  266. Jordan should be banned from the touchline as well, what a mug.

  267. well you bet Harry will have something to say about this tomorrow. And the papers will lick his ass cos hes future England boss. But i think Tottenham can go far with this team. its sickens me but they really can.

  268. The guy is has no class! UEFA and AC Milan should discipline that clown.

  269. Paul N, which clown? there re several candidates for that tag.

  270. Commentators are trying to show highlights. Apart from the goal and a couple Milan headers on target, there is nothing to show. Both crap teams. Sad–Milan has proud tradition.

  271. What kind of sp*d fan celebrates their greatest result, in fifty years, on an Arsenal blog?

  272. That refers to J*mes.

  273. gattuso, Limstone.

seriously, the situation had passed and he is keeping it going after the blasted match.

  274. What a boring match!

I remember a Barca supporter saying Ibra was better than RVP last season! di bwoy mad to blow wow!

  275. Poor Flam!n!….He left Arsenal for a super club that can’t even draw with the Spuds.

  276. lol @Paul N

  277. 4ever, unfortunately we have lost two straight to those Spuds. That changes in your away match for sure.

  278. There are no spud blogs Finsbury, so where else is he going to go?

AC Milan are a disgrace – they paid for their lack of ambition. Without a couple of their best players the spuds were there for the taking, but they did not have the courage to go for it, even on their home ground. They have no one to blame but themselves!

  279. That doesn’t make the Spuds any better Limestone

  280. the result is one thing but just imagine the smug knowitall faces on all those spud fans tomorrow… makes me sick.

luckily I sit next to both a spuds and an AC fan at work so at least I can take my anger out on him all day. a vicious circle.

  281. our away game. 4ever, absolutely true. They were lousy, yet have a win against Milan. Nothing like our 2-0 win at the San Siro, yet this is being hailed as a famous win. Says it all about Serie A right now.

  282. Well, at least it was us who opened the way for English teams at the San Ziro

  283. Anyone heard the dubbing of Guardiola’s press conference on ATVO? The guy sounds stoned and as if he is making it up as he goes along. Funny stuff.

  284. I just saw the Milan-Spuds game. The people who I watched the game with aren’t really football fans so they thought that Spuds played nice. Just for that, I’m not watching the game with them tomorrow.

  285. I despise Milan and their fascist owner. This is one skull I won’t begrudge the Spuds. I wish they would’ve made it a blow out. I hope Gareth Bale ends Merkel’s career like he did to Maicon when they face each other next. Oh and Bendtner is better than that diving cunt Ibrahimovic. That big nosed, over-rated pile of poo.

  286. The dvd is already out Tottingham in the San Siro part 2. And now to beating a real team.

  287. Kiuch The Gunner

@ Kenyan Gunner, I live in Limuru and share your concerns about the blackouts. Fingers crossed for tonight. So where do you watch your weekend EPL games?
