Defensive Hands Forced But In Whose Favour?

The media procession of the Premier League title being delivered to Old Trafford stuttered yesterday with a goalless draw probably the best result for Arsenal, ensuring that the gap to the top was closed whilst the fourth place battle between Tottenham and Chelsea stayed suitably distant.

Injuries are dominating the Arsenal horizon ahead of the FA Cup replay against Leeds, Leeds, Leeds and the Premier League visit of Wigan Athletic to The Emirates at the weekend. Gary Speed has shown a refreshing naivety in his role as Wales manager, would that others took his lead in enquiring as to whether or not a player who has been seriously injured is actually fit. No doubt that the cynicism and selfish attitude of other international coaches and FAs will take hold but for the moment, it is a pleasant change.

Thomas Vermaelen has been speaking of his injury woes,

According to the specialist who will operate on me it’s a small tendon that runs next to the achilles tendon and is irritating it, and it needs to be taken out. It is a small tendon that doesn’t do very much. Hopefully that will solve it. I’d like to be fit to play the European Championship qualifiers for Belgium in March, but really I’d prefer not to make predictions. I remain cautious

Well that’s what The Guardian reckons. According to the inside scoop of Daily Mirror-land, he’s aiming for Barcelona. If he can recover that quickly from an operation, the question is why has there been so much fannying around up until now. Little doubt that the medical staff will get criticism at some point for the length of the Belgian’s absence but it seems that the consultant’s and surgeon’s have something to answer for.

It still leaves Wenger in a quandry; does the situation require him to dive into the transfer market or can he make do with that which he already has? The short-term approach would be to say, “Yes, we have enough”, but it would only take Koscielny to get a red card or Djourou to suffer an injury before the end of March for the folly of that belief to become apparent.

Quite simply, Wenger has to sign someone. The question then becomes, what sort of player and whom? Does he look for  short-term replacement, along the lines of Sol Campbell (but I hasten to add, not Sol), someone to get him through this tricky patch and then be released in the summer.

Or is the pecking order of centre backs evolving still at the club. At this moment in time, were everyone fit, my feeling is that Vermaelen and Djourou would be the Premier and Champions League’s pairing of choice with Squillaci and Koscielny covering cup competitions and the odd domestic league fixture. Would a new signing be brought in, risking disruption to that order and the career development of Djourou and Koscielny?

My own feeling is that Wenger will look for a short-term solution, someone who prevents the necessity of having Alex Song drop in as centre back. The speculation might be for Cahill, Samba, Taylor but I suspect another player in the mould of Squillaci is going to be signed, someone to provide no more than cover this season.

We shall see. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Greetings YW as per usual a very good post….your dilligence is to respected…Mexes may be included to unqualified sources..we wait n see..Fiiiiiiirrrrsssttt

  2. well written YW, u get used to us saying that, but far be it from us to take a good thing for granted when you visit some other arsenal blogs, so we must tell u well done.

Depends on how old mexes is, cos i also think its short term that AW will go and likely someone he has been watching rather any emergency solution taken at random. u sure the likes of cahill would want to be back up when TV5 is back?

  3. I’ll predict Wenger won’t buy a defender coz he will think what will he do when they are all fit, whenever that would possibly maybe might be. you know one thing is for certain, if he doesn’t get cover one of our remaining defensive troops will get gimped.

    I’d go for Samba.

  4. YW – I agree that Arsene will attempt to make a “sticking plaster” signing.

  5. Mexes must be up there with Frey as most consistently linked player to Arsenal. Don’t see it happening myself. Seems like a bit of a diva.

    Sylvain Distin anyone?

  6. I agree with someone who mentioned that Arsene probably made his mind up weeks back, and the paperwork is quietly being arranged. Yes, that would signal an unfashionable, or unknown ‘cover’ for a remainder of a season, older, experienced. Has Pat Rice started training for a switch to the centre I wonder?

  7. the Ian Dury is still out on Koscielny aswell isnt it.

  8. As you have correctly stated an injury or a red card to Djouru or Kos could cause real problems re defensive cover..I’d prefer us not to have to use Song as CB.. Now is the not the time to pontificate or fanny around as you put it….Get the cheque book out, dust it off n bring in somebody…Decisions decision decisoins..Who’d be a manager eh

  9. at least we have no Silvestre to fuck things up for us this season.

  10. Loving the RVP wallpaper. Sight for sore eyes. Hairs on the back of my neck say we’re in a title fight.

  11. Anyone seen Oxlade-and-Neutrino in action at all?

  12. Limpars I’ve always though of Distin as decent player…He’s no worse than Silvestre was…

  13. Joger Johnson would not be a bad shout. Looks a good defender.

It would not suprise me if Arsene went for somebody like Distin or even Richard Dunne.

  14. hey limpar, u never did say what happened to assist and how it came back again

  15. Joger Johnson is too much of a cunt I’m afraid, Goonerandy. And please god not Richard Dunne. Fucking woeful player.

Distin had a very good game against Torres… and at 33 he’s not going to get all upset when he’s dropped for Vermaelen upon his 2nd coming. He’s also had almost as much Premier League experience as Arsene himself.

  16. It just sort of fell off, Team Spirit. Couldn’t find it for the life of me… then this morning, I woke up, and there it was… right where it always had been. Very glad to have it back. Bit like Stella getting her groove back I suppose. Only much, much better than that.

  17. Not Samba, God no. Distin Would be a good signing as he is 34 but still a good defender. I still expect to see someone we’ve never (or hardly) heard of come in.

  18. happy its back then… seems to have brought you back on key too so it has to be all good although i dare say i have no idea what stella getting her groove back should normally entail. LOL

  19. Trust me its Mexes…..last season who’w of predicted Kos or Squill….

  20. Yogi why are you making it harder for us to access this post. also couldn’t get new post on me smartarse phone yesterday whilst out bloody shopping with the wife. slacking.

  21. nah duke goonem,we’ll soon have mathew upson to do it instead!mark my words-a £2.50 & a packet crisp signing at 11.59pm 31/1/11!

  22. The rumours are for Mexes but I cannot see how that would sit with Arsene’s suggestion that we’d prefer someone with EPL experience. I think Samba could be a good choice but doubt he’d come cheap and we’d still have the problem of the impact his arrival would have on the likes of Djourou and Koscielny. Richard Dunne would seem the ideal (short term) choice and Houllier might be more reasonable without any typically nationalistic bias.

As someone has already stated on this thread, who’d be a manager?

  23. the hairs on james palms says the spuds are in a title fight.

  24. Distin obviously seems a better choice/player than Dunne. However, I doubt he’d move from a team in which he is guaranteed regular football to one in which he would at best be a make-weight. But maybe I’m wrong. Interesting times ahead!

  25. anyone but Upson, hell i’d even take Silvestre back over that c*nt, still havnt forgotten that cunt over the battle of bloemfontain. even mystic meg saw him fukin things up at the world cup.

  26. But in the twilight of your career, Dgob… the chance to win the title… and to play for AFC?

I don’t know why I’m trying to talk myself into this… must be silly season.

Is Christopher Samba the most incongruous name in the division?

  27. Great performance at the weekend!

Personally I would prefer to see someone a bit more long term, I have been watching more of Cahill this season, and he is not just a clogger, he can actually play out from the back.

If you sign someone short term, and they know it is, I would worry about the motivation.

Longer term – competition for places is a good thing.

There is no room for sentiment in football, and if we sign someone new, and they turn out to be better than what we have and earn a starting place to the detriment of Squillaci or Koscielny’s career, then so be it.

  28. I have a strange feeling Silvstre could come back now. ticks all the boxes.
    cheap.
    french
    dodgy
    old

  29. As another blogger pointed out last week.

Squillaci seemed to be more of a stop-gap signing so maybe it would be better to bring in someone to compete rather than another stop-gap.

  30. Limpar – He is you are right, but he seems like a good defender so that would not bother me to be honest.

  31. After our kids got smashed by Villa this happens to our ladies: http://www.arsenal.com/match-menu/172474/ladies/wolfsburg-v-arsenal-ladies?tab=report

  32. How will the club recover ? ;)

  33. Delia---Block 112

I just wish AW would get on with it as soon as possible ( like today),as I can see us up the creek with out any paddles. I fear a red card at Leeds, this game is going to be one hell of a scrap. We will then be in the same position as we were in January last year, when the failure to sign a striker , to cover injuries, put pay to our title hopes. We simply
cannot take Song out of our MF, so come on Arsene don’t let us down.
    As always COYRs.

  34. Watched the spuds versus manutd and had to grudgingly accept that Vidic is probably the best central defender in the epl at the moment. Not much of a chance that we could get him or someone in his mold. So what we probably need is a Mikael Silvestre type defender. One who is so old that he wouldn’t mind sitting on the bench when the other players are fully fit.

  35. With TR5 out (and for how long, nobody knows) we really don’t have a “senior” centre back. Maybe Arsene will suprise us and buy somebody at the level who will parnter TV5 on his return, instead of making way for him.

  36. Vermaelen – Injured
    Djourou – Injury prone
    Kos – Potential
    Squillaci – Average and injured
So, thinking out of the box, something a bit left field, blue sky thinking, rather than worrying about a players feelings, why don’t we buy a centre half who is, and bear me out on this, someone who is well….good.

  37. Kenyan – The last thing we need is a Sylvestre type defender. It really is.

  38. Kingsalami – Hah, heratic.

  39. Duke

Problem is I cannot replicate anyone’s problems. Works fine for me on my phone, from Mozilla, Chrome and IE8 on W7.

    YW

  40. Goonerandy, maybe he ought to call Bartley back from Sheffield. There was no recall clause when he was sent on loan but there are always away getting round such things!

  41. Lets re-sign Dolphin-head – just in time for Barca again too!

  42. Cahill at £12-15m may seem a lot but if we will the title it will be peanuts. To sign a stop gap who is cheap ie Sol or Upston would be madness. As they are both injury prone themselves

  43. Kenyan – I don’t think there are mate. I am sure I have heard Arsene say before that he will never recall a player through their loan period. We should buy somebody, and buy somebody good.

  44. I shouldn’t worry too much Yogi.

What with us winning at the weekend Duke’s got to find something to moan about.

It was either you or the cricket.

  45. I agree with Kelvin – Schillacci is already a stop-gap in my mind so get someone in of proper quality and let Bartley be no 4 next season…

  46. Smoleter, I thought the arsenal ladies were the best in Great Britain. But 6:1 loss to Wolfsburg?

  47. Distin or Collins

  48. Sanchez Watt scored a lovely goal. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/9363318.stm
Leeds is 3rd or 4th game in.

  49. YW, I’m afraid to tell you this, but for the first time in ages, I think you may have some severe competition for the title of my favourite Arsenal blog. Arsespeak.com, an outsider appearing from nowhere is truely making the GFB league truly exciting. Gone are the days of the mighty trio (who for reasons of slights shall remain nameless), it’s now a four horse race.

  50. Neither thanks Deano!!

  51. New defender is unlikely unless it’s someone who is at the end of their current contract, meaning no big transfer price tag. Mexes to my understanding is contacted at Roma until 2012/13, so I can’t see it. Cahill, possibly out of contract in the summer, but I think Bolton will ask for too much money, unless a swap deal involving Carlos Vela is on the cards…

Vermaelen may return to help out at the tail end of the season but we should definitely prepare to be without him for the remainder. The good news is that defenders who spend a long spell on the sidelines seem to come back better players. Probably because they have time to analyse the games more and gain technical insight. Plus they are pretty much limited to strength training.

  52. that was some defeat for the ladies, glad it eas a friendly… likely there were some new squad players that mix well

  53. Gadget at 12:23. ACLF is one of a kind!

  54. Kelvin says:

Well, if we were able to get him for £12 million I reckon we might consider him. But the (admittedly entirely unreliable) media are talking about Bolton wanting £20-25 million, which is just a complete joke.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind Samba. He’s a far better footballer than people think – see his part in Blackburn’s goal against us this season or example…

  55. Team P Goals Scored
    1 Arsenal 22 45
    2 Man Utd 21 43
    3 Chelsea 22 38
    4 Manchester City 23 37
    5 Newcastle 22 35
    6 Bolton 23 34
    7 Blackpool 21 31

  56. My personal preference for a centre half is a long term solution and not a stop gap.

We have 4 centrehalf that in my opinion fall under 3 categories.
100% Starter = Vermaelen. BUT hes injured and may miss rest of the season. Therefore we should write him out of the equation until next season.

Great potential but with questions to be answered still = Kozzer, hes adapting well so lets hope it continues & Djourou, hes stepped up this season but needs time to make certain his injury worries are over.

Elder statesman = Squilly, can do a job when called on to replace a starter for a game or 2.

Therefore the solution to my mind is obvious = A long term starting centre half is whats needed. Someone who can replace Vermaelen as starter for the rest of the season and can then partner him when hes back. That then leaves Djourou and Kozzer as our backups. Thus leaving us with 4 centre halves of a quality that we wouldn’t mind any being a starter without losing quality.

So someone in the 22-26 year range is ideal but someone a little younger wouldn’t be a stretch either, providing some first team experience under their belt. Premier League experience preferable but not essential. European competition experience a bonus.

Who that is is anyones guess. My preference would be Mamadou Sakho (hence the little younger clause).

  57. I would also be quite chuffed with Cristián Zapata

  58. Re-sign Bould

  59. Deise, big fan of FIFA? Sakho is always my first signing. Wouldn’t get him cheap in real life though. Captain of PSG on a long term deal and they wouldn’t let him go easily.

  60. Fan of FIFA? No , im a fan of football and from what i have seen of those 2 last over past few seasons i have been impressed. We have the monies Markus but i dont think we have the drive or inclination to get a Sakho or Zapata. A pity really, either would be quite a player in our team in my opinion.

  61. Well him being young, french and very talented you can bet your ass Wenger has Sakho on a shortlist. My point is that PSG wouldn’t want to seel their captain and Wenger probably has had to accept and respect that decision in the past.

  62. END OF TRANSFER WINDOW:
T Minus thirteen days and some hours. And counting.

  63. Wait, by logic don’t we HAVE to sign a central defender? Arsene said that he’d like to have 4 defenders with one cover in extreme situations.
At the start of the season we had:
    Vermaelen
    Koscielny
    Djourou
    Squillaci
….And Nordtveit in an extreme situation, which thankfully never materialized.
Now that we’ve sold Nordtveit, isn’t it necessary for us to get another defender? Somebody at the level and age of Squillaci would be fine, although a younger player like Simon Kjaer or Toby Alderweireld would be great.

  64. Team P Goals Conceded
    1 WBA 22 41
    2 West Ham Utd 23 41
    3 Aston Villa 22 39
    4 Wolves 22 38
    5 Blackburn 23 37
    6 Blackpool 21 36
    7 Wigan Athletic 22 34
    8 Newcastle 22 32
    9 Bolton 23 31

    17 Arsenal 22 22
    18 Chelsea 22 19
    19 Manchester City 23 19
    20 Man Utd 21 19

  65. Transfer window is so, so mind-numbing. I’m giving up on football til Wednesday.

    COME ON YOU MUGS!

  66. Team spirit thanks for he stats, Looks like our defensive unit hasnt been doing as badly as some (insert bill) would like us to believe.

Transfer windows bore me no end and this one is no better. I trust Wenger will take care of our transfer needs.

  67. 18-20 million for Darren Bent to Villa? I know he has a good scoring record but that is a lot of money.

  68. Limpar – Don’t wait till Wednesady mate, you would miss our game tomorrow night ;)

  69. andy – we play wednesday

  70. @ Firstlady , yeah what i noticed too. the stats are from the prem league official site

  71. @ dups, its the matter of him being English i guess… hence u hear of newcastle wanting 20 m for carrol ans also Bolton for cahill

  72. :(

Damn, I thought it was tomorrow. I will join Limpar then.

  73. Nice stats. What they can’t cover up is that we have lost stupid games at home agains WBA and Newcastle. The stats look great (top of the scorers, near the bottom of the conceders), it’s the complacency in games we should win (if you look at the stats!) that’s the only thing that’s keeping us from running away with the league.

I’m sure I’ll be called a doomer, which I’m not, but the facts are there. A run of consistency from now until the end of March would be enough, let’s hope the first team can stay fit and put more teams to the sword like they did on Saturday night.

  74. That Bent story is amazing. £18M rising to £24! Villa have gone absolutely mental if they go ahead with that tranfer.

  75. Bent has gone mental more like it. Sunderland have a decent shout at European football and Villa are in decline, O’Neill took them as far as they are likely to go for the forseeable. Bent may just be angling for a pay-rise.

  76. I know its accedemic now and all but just as a for instance with regards our defense – If we had kept a clen sheet in the following games – where we wernt really in danger of conceding until we switched of for a second

Sunderland – wed have 3 points insteat of 1 (+2 on current points total)
Newcastle – wed have 1 point instead of 0 (+3 on current points total)

Then wed be level on points with Man Utd

And if we were to take the game against Man Utd – wed have 1 point instead of 0 (+4 on current points total – with Man Utd 2 points worse off)

Wed be top of the league. That’s the fine margins.

I like to torture myself with what ifs sometimes :(

  77. Deisegooner @1:13…

I hear what you are saying but I think that your categories have assumed a level of rigidity that Wenger as a manager has never subscribed to when dealing with players. I don’t think that he necessarily thinks in terms of “100% starter” when he looks at a player. Djourou and Kosceilny are staking a claim for CB positions as we speak and I just don’t think that Wenger is going to just sign a player who’d come in and start every game alongside Vermaelen… not without that player proving himself. In any event there’s a presumption that Djourou and Koscielny would be happy to drop even further back the pecking order when this new signing arrives. Experience tells us that good players want to play and that in very short order they’d be agitating for a move. Lassana Diarra did it, Robert Huth left Chelsea and went to Stoke for 1st team football and Upson left us. Djourou is at an age where he has to play a significant number of games and so is Koscielny. IMHO the idea of pushing them further down the pecking order is a non-starter unless Squillaci leaves at the end of the season… even then it is doubtful that we’d keep both Kos and JD as back-up players simply because they are both too good for such a role. 4 specialist CBs is about as much as Arsenal can carry squad-wise given Wenger’s insistence on two CBs ( he only played 3 when he first inherited the team all those moons ago) and also his preference for a settled back 4 and keeper.

I Think that Yogi’s post captures the situation fairly well when he asks .. “who’d be a manager?” because I think that this CB dilemma is far from an easy one to solve. I won’t be surprised if Wenger ultimately does nothing and uses either Sagna or Song as an interim CB, after all Squillaci is out for another two weeks or 3 weeks only. Bottom line here is that the club allowed the Vermaelen injury to drag on for far too long. Whoever it was that gave the advice to avoid surgery must now have to admit to an error of judgement. Even allowing for the inexactitude of medical diagnosis Vermaelen has been injured since August! That seems a heck of a long time to wait for an injury to clear up by itself… then again I might be talking utter bollocks as I’m not a doctor… :-)

  78. @ Deise I do too. LOL..

and i agree that we could really have avoided losing those games as well as the spurs game where we were 2 goals up! If only

  79. Our most frustrating game was against Spurs. Not because of the opposition, but because we lost a game when we were 2 0 up.

  80. and at home too goonerandy – man that stung like a motherf**ker

  81. mexes seems to be fave, pitty it wasnt 5-10 years ago, i was always a fan. We need someone and i would prefer a long term as sqilly might not be here next year, english players are over priced so i think AW will rule that out.

  82. Unfortunately had to miss the game this weekend but have to be happy with 3 – 0. We have played excellent attacking football and still kept clean sheets in 3 out of the last 4 league games. Still not sure what to think about those cup games. Hopefully the league form and the clean sheets are a sign of things to come but way to early to really get excited.

I did get to watch the spuds/manc game this weekend. Think how good this team could be if we could get someone like Vidic to anchor our defense. ManU became the dominant team in the PL when they added Vidic and EVDS. I think we have our EVDS. With the depth and talent we have upfront we would be unbeatable if we had a rock solid defense. We have tons of money and nothing else to spend it on. Why not go for a home run and make an overwhelming offer for someone like Sakho. I hear he is a beast, big strong, tough in the air. Another name that sounds good is Nevin Subbotic (?sp). There might be others that Arsene knows about and I do not. Adding our version of Vidic or Tony Adams or a younger Sol Campbell would make more of a difference then any other type of player. I have hopes that Djourou might be that player but why not hedge our bets and spend the money on a player who might really make a huge difference rather then leave it sitting a bank somewhere? Signing someone like that is not illegal, and does not invalidate project youth, nor will we really lose the moral high ground or have to cave in to the wankers at Le Grove.

Oh well time to wake up and stop dreaming. Hopefully we will at least get some reliable cover. If our title chase falters because we try to get by for a couple of months or we are worried about a logjam at CB it would really be frustrating. Hopefully Arsene will open his check book and get a decent player even if we have to overpay a little.

  83. I’m a big fan of Samba.Signing him would give us a defender, midfielder and a good goalscorer all rolled into one. He’s also got leadership qualities. And he’ll be far cheaper than Cahill. Why are English players so overpriced anyway? It’s crazy.Paying £20 million for a player who is at best average.
On the other hand,it’ll be tempting fate for Arsene not to sign a defender. And it should be someone with PL experience. We dont have the luxury of time for someone from another league to have an ‘adaptation period’.

  84. The January window is turning into a fiasco.

The reserves have been soundly thrashed and the 1st team humiliated by Ipswich and Leeds.

Wenger showed utter contempt for the Carling Cup by not playing Nasri, a competition that he annually shows contempt for. The statistic that arsenal are the most consistent in the competition is a TOTAL LIE. Don’t listen to the facts. Wenger went up to Ipswich and left out his best player. As a result our midgets gave a dim performance in what was a cauldron of giants.

Wenger then creates the smokescreen of Vermaelen’s injury to resist calls for big signings in the window.

The Vermaelen injury is a smokescreen for a french man who does not want to win anything.

He says that if Vermaelen is unfit he may or not go into the window.

What the fuck does that mean ?

Vermaelen has been injured for months now. Wenger has had plenty of time to prepare for the January window, but he spins a yarn.

Gooners know that the youth project is a barrier to trophy success. Wenger is really a double agent planted by one of the big clubs. Create the myth of a few young players by all pretending to be interested and then let arsenal sign them. The reality being that they are shite and knowing nods and winks are being exchanged.

And this is what is going to happen again.

    Another teenager will be signed.

Mark my words. Another fucking teenager.

  85. If the $p*d$ can $plurge 15 Million fre$hly minted untraceable $p*d$ upon Bentley (20 Million $puddie$ if you factor in inflation and dry rot) why can’t Wnker whip out his wad and happy slap his way through the pane of the window?

  86. @ ZimPaul
Has Pat Rice started training for a switch to the centre I wonder?
    ha ha

Maybe he will try for a long-term solution, and then only if that is not available will he look for a stopgap. It’s all very well us (or Arsene) having a wishlist but the ideal player may not be available now. We may just have to take what we can get.

    @ Block 4
The thing to remember is that other teams have dropped silly points, and conceded silly goals too. Man U went through a phase of going 2-0 up and then letting the opposition in to draw. From that table, it’s clear that we could improve our goals conceded stat, but let’s not make our record sound worse than it is.
And that Spurs result is the one that rankles with me most, as well. First for the obvious reason, and secondly because we let them back in. The Newcastle and West Brom games we didn’t deserve to win, the way we played on the day.

  87. Kyle Bartley (yes, he is on loan up near Leeds Leeds Leeds, and cannot be recalled):

    *Link from RealSocialDad’s blog.

  88. Van Persie vs West Ham

  89. TS, FG, Block 4, and Goonerandy
The spurs game was indeed horrible, and was made worse by the fact that we did the same thing against wigan last season!

I’m sure the boys must have learned their lessons by now as I can’t see it ever happening to this team again for some time. One can understand conceding the odd goal like against Newcastle and Sunderland once in a while. Losing a game from a 2 goal lead is just criminal.

  90. Deisgooner: It’s fair to say that we have dropped a few stupid points so far and that with the odd bit of luck or consistency we’dve been up there with the Mancs.

Then again, had Neville been sent off they’d been down to 10 and not beaten WBA, so -2pts. Had fletcher, Rooney, Scholes & Neville, received just half the yellows they deserve then they’d be missing games through suspension, at least 3 more dropped pts there with squad players, as we’ve had to play.

Same old story I’m afraid, they tend to win the league by a small margin, that small margin is inevitably down to poor or downright bias officials. Not that the history books or SKY would ever reflect that. The day Ferguson leaves I think it’ll change somewhat though.

  91. Fun Gunner:

We all know that there are not many Tony Adam’s, Sol Campbell’s or Vidic’s out there. Never sure if it is fun or just frustrating to play fantasy manager but it is always impossible to resist this time of year at least for some.

Overall, I think our defending has improved this year. We are lucky that other teams, especially United have conceded several uncharacteristic goals and that is why we are still close. Just because they do it does not mean it is OK for us to make the same mistakes. That said, if we can maintain the attacking and more important the defensive form we have seen in 3 or the last 4 league games we have a great chance to overtake United. Unfortunately very little room for error at this point. Lets hope we keep the recent league form and the injury bug stays away because we are very thin at the back right now.

  92. WUM

  93. I am loving it, Muppet :D

  94. ‘If ifs an buts were candy an nuts we’d all have a Merry Christmas.’

Let’s all focus on the rest of the season. And try not to be too disappointed when we don’t sign anyone in January. We support Arsenal, and should be well used to how this works by now. We’ll soldier on with what we have and Squillaci will be good to go in a week. Proper order.

And how about some respect for Squillaci while we’re at it. He’s been mostly great for us.

  95. Van Persie the effin’ deal aint he?

If i were Pique and Puyol (which subsequently as this is the internet I cannot prove that I am not)…I would be shitting myself at the prospect of facing him.

  96. Agreed Markus, SS deserves more respect; if he can make a comeback against Wigan or Ipswich, we are fine..

  97. Muppet you made me laugh in the library to myself.

I got funny looks. Don’t know if I am going to be able to forgive you.

  98. What’s all this nonsense about Vidic. If he played in any other team but the Mancs he would receive yellow or red cards in nearly every game.

  99. I’ve had it with Arsenal former players acting as pundits, commentators, or just big lousy mouth Arsenal critics.

They remind me of Democrats, they’re scared shit to say anything good about Arsenal or defend the club they represented.

What are they afraid off? Afraid of being labeled as weak? They’re proving they’re weak now by not defending the club they love and believe in.
Unless they really hate Arsenal, which I find odd after Arsenal gave them the fame and in some cases still feeds them.

The Arsenal commentator who commented during the WHU game should be ashamed of himself and should quit his job at Arsenal.com. It’s the decent thing to do Sir if you would like to continue to attack the club that feeds you.

  100. Too right mate, it’s gotten to the stage that I’m not even surprised when Vidic doesn’t get booked.

  101. Bill, you can forget about Subotic. Dortmund are playing CL next season and the German clubs do so well financially that they don’t need to sell their players. By the way, we have a player like Vidic already. His name is Johan Djourou. He’s tall, decent in the air, reads the game well, is calm on the ball and can follow a play up to the opposing goal. He’s a whole five years younger than Vidic too.

  102. Limestonegunner

Hopefully we’ll have a defender in before the Leeds replay or at least before this weekend’s league match.

I’ve already explained my reasoning for going for more than a stop gap and my preference for PL experience a few days ago.

I think attempting to predict what the club does is of some arcane interest but what is important is discussing and debating what we think should happen. So far I haven’t heard a really strong case for going for a stop-gap player until the end of the season. That may be more likely but is it preferred?

The only genuine argument so far is that this might interfere with the development of Kos and Djourou. I don’t think that is the case. It is really unlikely Vermaelen will play a significant role in the remaining three and a half months of the season. So Kos and Djourou will see significant playing time with the schedule we currently have and the need for Djourou to have more rest in this first season back from long term injury even with a starting CB partner. The only question is for next year and that can be sorted out over the summer and in preseason. Squillaci was signed as a backup and could go in the summer and the other four would be competing for the top spots. That is for Arsene to decide who makes up the best pairing. We always seem to have plenty of games for the top four CB’s.

  103. The goals United have conceded haven’t been uncharacteristic, Bill. They’re conceding goals the way they have because they don’t kill off games. And they haven’t been killing off games because they aren’t producing up front. When a team doesn’t score their defense comes under pressure.

  104. @ deano | January 17, 2011 at 5:07 pm |
“Van Persie the effin’ deal aint he?”

You said it! Robin Van Perfect.

    @ dups
“If he played in any other team but the Mancs he would receive yellow or red cards in nearly every game.”
Too right. The leniency shown towards Manure players, Fergie-time etc, all these give them the small advantages in games which may not seem like a huge deal at the time but which, incrementally over a season, are worth a few points.

  105. We played some nice football and won convincingly v Wet Sham with Theo and RvP particualrly good. Let’s not get carried away though – West Ham were awful and had an injury list that we would be envious of. They are rubbish even with Parker, without him they are tragic.

We need another defender though. Djourou has been fantastic but he looked tired v Wet Sham having played most games recently. He also has the additional benefitof not being a midget. Squillaci is just sh1te though. Another sh1te French defesnder in the mold of Silvestre, Come back Cygan (who wasn’t as bad as people said) all is forgiven!

  106. @ Limestonegunner

In fact our opinions (as fans) on either question are neither here nor there. We enjoy discussing these matters because we are obssessed with Arsenal, but I think it’s a bit odd to say that it’s “important” that we discuss or debate what should happen. What dreadful fate do you think would come to pass if we DIDN’T debate it? :)

  107. Limestone…

I’m always surprised when fans take it for granted that players as good as Djourou or Kosceilny will willingly accept the manager making a signing that takes them down a peg in the pecking order. Both Djourou and Kosceilny will either have to play significantly or they’d leave… our current set up is just about the ideal scenario another CB will be very difficult to accomodate and one who is brought in ahead of both Kos and JD just doesn’t make sense to me. If we sign a “starter”, as you want, then one of Djourou or Kosceilny would all probability ask to leave. In fact it may well be both! If Chelsea had real trouble managing Alex, Terry and Carvalho what makes you think that we’d have less trouble with A top defender + Vermaelen, Djourou and Kosceilny. Even Robert Huth left Chelsea to go to Stoke because he wanted to play. Djourou isn’t a 19 year old any more and neither is Kosceilny… if Wenger believes that they are good enough then I just don’t see how he can get a “starter”. I may be wrong but for me it makes no sense.

  108. Happy days eh, AIC?

  109. G4E,

The 2 worst ex-players for anti-Arsenal comments are Alan Smith and David Platt. Smith laid into us for the “hadbags at OT” in 2003 and completely ignored the fact that Horseface got Vieira sent off and the many misdemenours of ManU. He was apparently banned from the press room at Highbury after that. Platt just hates us though which is weird considering he won his only medals in England with us and we paid him way too much to him for being a crock (sounds familiar) and giving him an undeserved pension. Oh and apart from a couple of goals (ManU being the most important) Platt was sh1te for us. So he can f*** right off.

  110. consols,

I enjoyed the game and we played some nice stuff. I hate Wet Sham also so it was good to help send them down to where they belong. Its was a big improvement over Ipswich and Leeds, so yes I was happy.

  111. I must have had different broadcasters in the game that was televised in western Canada by Setanta. Though I don ‘t remember their names, they were both a decided improvement over recent broadcasts which were completely hostile to Arsenal. I mean hostile in the Alan Hansen meaning of anti Arsenal and at times far worse than Hansenite commentating.

By the way, I have read a column in my local newspaper written by the venerable Alan Hansen in which he suggests that Wayne Rooney gave a performance yesterday against the Spuds that was 95% superior to the foreign group now playing in Great Britain. Selfless devotion to the cause was the underlying theme that was missing by the foreign player when compared to the likes of Rooney.

  112. Joshua, I hope all the players we bring in have the drive to want to be starters as competition is vital at this level. We may have a soft spot for the players in the current squad but I would like to have the very best available for us, period. The players understand this perfectly.

Hahahaha!!! I bet AIC gets severe heartburn whenever he has to give this team a compliment.

  113. Just a thought, but why does a new signing have to expect to be sitting on the bench when TV5 comes back? Surely Arsene picks the in-form players, regardless of who he would prefer personally.

  114. It was a good performance AIC but “Let’s not get carried away…”?

I don’t think anyone is and whu must you dilute any serious comment with awful stuff like “Squillaci is just sh1te though. Another sh1te French defesnder in the mold of Silvestre, …”. It just means that no one will take you seriously.

He may not be the best defender in the world but he wears the shirt and certainly doesn’t deserve to be insulted like that.

  115. consols,

Ok, maybe I was a bit harsh but he’s really, really poor. Just not good enough.

  116. I don’t want any love from the plundits. I want them to continue being as biased and predictable as they are so their xenophobia shines clearly. Fuck ‘em. It must burn them that a frog knows more about football than they do and that a group of young continental players have the capacity to thrive in the English game.

  117. Just saw Rafael’s second yellow again. The idiot had his hands raised before he made contact and tripped up the Spuds player. Why would he have his hands raised if he was not planning on tripping him? Definite yellow. Just to show how bad the commentating is, right after they show the replay the commentator says-”thats not a foul! Look, he’s got his hands raised! Totally accidental, and besides he ended up tripping over his own feet, did the Spurs player. Bad decision by the ref.”

Cos we all know when a Man U Shited player raises his hands and protests his innocence, well, then he must be innocent. Bollix!!!!

  118. The new signing will have a wealth of opportunities to represent the club regardless of TV5′s recovery rate/ return to form. I suspect strongly though who ever is signed will not be first choice if Vermelen/Djourou/Koscielny are fit. I am at a loss to understand people suggesting that Wenger should go out and buy a ‘top’ defender for 15 million as it would surely provide more problems than it would soloutions as it would either limit the opportunites of young technicaly excellent players like the above mentioned, or unsettle our new signings if our now first choice is prefered.Keeping the players happy is a major part of being a good manager and there’s a fine line between a balance for competition for places and having quality to excess.

We have world class centre backs that deserve to play week in week out if their form is sustained. Buying another that will expect to play as regularly would not be fair. There is every space for sentiment in football and what we need is a bloody good squad player.

  119. When paired with Djourou, Squillaci has been outstanding. When paired with Koscielny, the partnership hasn’t worked out as well as we all wish it would. This is why the doomers can’t decide who out of Kos and Squillaci is worse. Thus far people have talked lots of crap about Koscielny, but then he goes on a run like the one he is on and, poof, Koscielny is just inexperienced. I’m waiting until Squillaci gets his run with Djourou to see how the doomers react. Mind you, Squillaci played with Djourou when not nearly as match fit as he is now.

  120. Consols, these French defesnders, particularly in the mold of Silvestre, are indeed a hazard to English football! By the way, I seem to remember Silvestre giving some fairly strong performances for Man U. over quite a number of years.

  121. Gainbourg….

I have nothing against competition and I really don’t think that the players themselves are against competition as such… but it is still a fact that good players want to play… IMHO if you bring in a CB that is intended to start ahead of Djourou and Kosceilny you are effectively telling them that they’re not good enough. And in such circumstances they’d ask to leave. For me it is common sense. When Wenger signed Vermaelen he basically let not just Kolo but Senderos too go because he knew that Kolo wasn’t going to be too happy playing second fiddle to Vermaelen and dropping Gallas would have led to WWW3… Senderos wasn’t going to be any good to anyone if he was moved even further down the pecking order.

Ultimately the manager is managing human beings and there are things like ego and pride and other intangibles that make a massive difference to team morale and individual performance and any intelligent manager has to bear that in mind… after all we only got Gallas because he refused to play RB at Chelsea when Carvalho and Terry were started at CB!

It is one thing for Bartley or Miquel to suddenly show a huge improvement and grab a starting spot, it is something else entirely for the manager to go out and buy someone else to start ahead of his current players. The first one is more likely to lead to a player rolling up his sleeves and getting on with it. The second would invariably mean an exit for the “demoted” player. Management is a tad more difficult than it appears, I think… or may be I’m just over-thinking the situation. For me this CB business is really not as simple as some folks think… Yogi got it right when asked in today’s blog.. “who’d be a manager?”

  122. Deano, but what if this squad player turns out to be the new Beckenbauer? Would you want him sat down because you like Koscielny?

  123. Joshua, who said this new player should expect to walk right in to the starting eleven? I don’t think there are too many central defenders around who’d march right in and take a starting place from the likes of Djourou, Koscielny or Squillaci even if he’s worth 25 million pounds. All I’m saying is that if we do bring someone in and he turns out to be a good CB, then that’s a win-win.

  124. im pretty sure Squillachi signed a 3 or 4 year deal. Its time to reconcile that he will be here next year and the year after.

  125. Gainsbourg…

I agree that if we bring in a CB and he turns out to be brilliant then it’s all good. The points I’m making are
    1. I just don’t see how we can keep 5 specialist CBs happy. If our new guy turns out to be the mutt’s nuts then someone amongst our existing 4 will have to make way. Furthermore, if it means that one of Djourou or Kos is pushed back down the pecking order then I imagine that one or indeed both might ask to leave
2.If Wenger does what limestone is suggesting, which is bring in this hypothetical super duper CB to start alongside Vermaelen then it is almost inevitable that one of Kos or Djourou will most definitely leave IMHO. now this might not be a problem if we imagine Miquel or Bartley stepping up but I just think that is a tad naive to imagine that we can keep hold of 4 top quality CBs as some of our fans appear to think…

Actions have consequences is all I’m saying really.

  126. Thanks for the insight on Platt & Smith AIC…I just don’t understand why all of those old Pharts hate Arsenal so much?
Funny thing and I may be generalizing here, but they are all English players?

Henry, Vieira, Pires, and the likes don’t attack Arsenal this way.

  127. Squillachi is not a bad defender, not every player we sign will come and slot right in into the PL or Arsenal way of playing.

  128. @ G4E

Not to do with nationality. It just so happens that those pundits you have mentioned, and Stewart Robson, were employed by Arsenal FC but are not Gooners. Lee Dixon is a Man City fan, for example. Winterburn, Henry, Pires, Parlour…they are Gooners but unfortunately not pundits (except on ATVO)! Jens Lehman is a gooner pundit in Germany, I believe?

  129. Limestonegunner

FG, I didn’t mean it was significant to the club that we debate and discuss those issues. What value is predicting or speculating what the club will do? We will know if and when something happens. That is just a media game, like all the transfer rumours etc… It is fun to try to imagine but I find it more interesting and serious an endeavor as a supporter who likes to discuss the issues related to Arsenal to think about what the club should do. Each of us can have ideas about what would improve our club if anything and why we think that. In making a cas and responding, we can learn more. That is what makes discussing Arsenal with others dynamic and intellectually engaging.

Since none of us have any control over it, why not discuss the more substantive, analytical issues and wait and see what takes place.

  130. I think Squillachi is a very good defender – don’t forget how much we ask of our CBs. It’s a tall order to get full marks in every department.
And please let’s call him Toto or TS, not SS! :)

  131. Thanks FG,

But still, regardless of their behind the scene affiliations, the ones that bad mouth Arsenal are still the English ones. :)

I’m sure there other ones who are not English but I just don’t see or hear them.

  132. Limestonegunner

On the other hand, “important” is perhaps the wrong word entirely. None of this is important in the grand scheme of things, since we are discussing “just football.” But since that is why we are all here and probably take it seriously in some respects personally, it seems important that we discuss Arsenal issues as best we can.

I suppose I mean it is more interesting and rewarding from a discussion standpoint to engage one another in views about Arsenal–at least to me. You can’t really argue or learn too much from people’s predictions–after all, we’ll see the results soon enough.

Anyway, FG, I didn’t mean it was earthshaking stuff one way or the other!

  133. @ LimestoneGunner
FG, I didn’t mean it was significant to the club that we debate and discuss those issues.
    OK, point taken.
I still think you’re exaggerating the significance of any conclusions reached amongst us fans, but if you are essentially saying you find one subject of discussion more interesting and stimulating than another, then fair enough.

    ***
    @ G4E
I’m sure there other ones who are not English but I just don’t see or hear them.
    Quite so!

  134. @ LimestoneGunner
Wrote the above before I’d seen your latest missive.

  135. Limestonegunner

Getting back to the main issue, I think Gainsbourg answers Joshua’s concern well. There isn’t a terrible down-side to bringing in a top quality player if we can afford to. No one has to be demoted but everyone has to fight for their place. And as we have seen, 4 CB’s do get the chance to play significantly at Arsenal over the course of a season.

FG, what do you think our club should do? Stand pat, find a stop-gap or try to bring in a competitor for the top pairing?

In the latter case, I, like Gainsbourg, don’t think it is a given that the new CB would start–we have 8-9 games or so before our Barca CL to find out who works best.

  136. Limestonegunner

The plundits we are talking about are former Arsenal players. I think the English ones (Stewart Robson, you know we are talking about you; but there are others) are competing for positions in the English media which we all agree is somewhat biased against Arsenal (for a variety of reasons, including xenophobia). In order to appear “objective” they have to parrot some of the cliched stereotypes of other plundits against the club.

I haven’t heard much from Perry Groves, but often he will simply acknowledge that he is an Arsenal man and go with it. That’s the best approach, since he is being open and can counter charges of bias by saying–of course I am, but am I wrong? Robson and others just don’t have either that self-belief or love for the club. In which case, why in the world is Arsenal paying them to offer views/analysis/commentary etc… on our website and for ATVO!!??

  137. Limestonegunner, that is it exactly. This is professional sports. Although there are all these issues regarding ego and personalities, that does not win you championships. You do not last very long in the managers chair if those concerns are going to restrict your movement in the Transfer Market. Wenger is capable of playing hardball should that be the need.

  138. why in the world is Arsenal paying them to offer views/analysis/commentary etc… on our website and for ATVO!!??

A very good question, LG, and one that has been exercising the mind of a few people!

My take on the CB question is first of all that we will not have that much choice – it’s January so no-one will want to let their good players go and we need a good CB who has EPL experience. But if pushed on the question of whether we should go for a “second choice” or a “starter” (assuming we’d have the choice), I think it depends on the age of the new player. I also assume that Wenger would ideally want to rotate that position less than others.

If AW buys in a new guy who is the same sort of age as TV, Kos and JD, AND better, that is the trickiest situation of all. (Also the least likely scenario, I feel.) Competition is a good thing (we are seeing the benefits of it now), but we woudl then have five very good CBs competing for two places, which might be a bit many. CBs really have to play to stay sharp. In the short term, we’d keep them all because AW wouldn’t sell till the end of the season, but we might end up losing one in the longer term and therefore not being better off on the whole. So perhaps I marginally lean towards a “second choice”. If we only had three CBs (or only three good ones), I would lean more the other way. But the arguments onboth sides are very good. Mostly I’m relieved that the decision is not mine to make.

  139. I think you are all way wrong. All of these ex-Arsenal plundits know full well how much we Gunners like to bitch and moan, never more so than when it comes to perceived bias in the media and especially commentators. Therefore they are simply fulfilling their duty and should be commended for it.

  140. ha ha
You do make me laugh, Irishgray! :)

  141. Limestonegunner

Indeed, it isn’t an easy decision or even once decided easy to fulfill at this time of year, as you suggest.

However, I think it is very unlikely that Vermaelen will be back and challenging for top spot this year. The estimate is 6 weeks, but we’ve seen healing take place a lot longer and that assumes the operation is successful and has actually addressed the problem, which is still pretty mysterious. Then he will have to get match fit and be brought along slowly and so on. He isn’t going to be in a position to demand first team action after being out. His target is getting back to top form and having a great pre-season to try to reclaim his position as a first choice CB for next season. so the problem of five CB’s for two spots this season looks very remote to me. Every season our 3rd CB gets many games. Kos is not going to get rusty sitting on our bench when Djourou needs to rotate this season.

Squillaci is a capable back up already. Why not take the opportunity to attempt to improve our defensive position?

Anyway, that’s my thinking. I hope we can get someone of the caliber to potentially improve our defense–there is no guarantee the player can, of course.

  142. I think there is a big difference between bitter ex Arsenal pundits such as Stewart Robson , Paul Merson (both sold in their prime) & David Platt (never a fans favourite at Arsenal) when compared to the likes of Perry Groves, Alan Smith, Lee Dixon & Ray Parlour who I believe really care about us.

Charlie Nick bucks the trend as he was sold & still loves us. Legend.

  143. Limestonegunner

PW, so why can’t we get Groves, Smith, Dixon, or Parlour to do commenting on ATVO and “tactical analysis” instead of Robson? Is Robson the only one who can break down tactics on a chalkboard? I just don’t see why we are rewarding those who go on and badmouth the players etc… in our own media which is for supporters.

  144. Squillaci is shite now is he? What utter fucking nonsense.

What’s tragic is not West Ham, AIC, it’s the way you mope and trudge through your relationship with your own football club. It’s a pitiful spectacle – it really is.

He wants to play even in the cup games, but apparently Wenger wants him fresh for the second half and the big games in the league. He’s accepted the wisdom of that but he is hungry. He gave some good insight into the mentality of the squad, plus he talked a little bit about how sometimes he would suggest that Arsenal be a bit more canny about taking points in big games by keeping possession and showing defensive nous while still being committed to the beautiful game. He’s talking like a winner, a leader. I am so happy he is back in the team and getting sharp. Worth a watch.

It’s a miracle that VP is fit. He, along with Cesc, Walcott, Nasri, Wilshere and Song are forming a midfield/attack that can penetrate any defence in europe. We can only hope that these 6 will line up against Barca. If not, then we have to hope that Arshavin, Bendtner and Chamakh hit form, that Ramsey has some form by then, and Rosicky, Denilson chip in, with possibly Diaby available as well.

  159. Muppet- Careful there Muppet, you’re starting to sound positive and dare I say it hopeful.

  160. Another player who we will be seeing on a regular basis is Gibbs. Don’t be surprised is he becomes a serious option on the left wing.

  161. Theo Van Nasregas – Wilsong. Still shorter than Jan Venegoor of Hesselink.

  162. Irishgray,

The world has gone mad, but English Football certainly went berserk…

“12:00 am : had wet dreams of Eden Hazard, Blaise Matuidi, Goken Inler and Guus Hiddink.”
    - You forgot the wanking for Sahko, Subotic and Vidic.

Absolutely bursting in side splitting laughter.

  164. Well apparently the latest hat to be thrown in the ring is that of Micheal Ciani of Bordeaux for CB. Kind of fits the mold so to speak: French, cheap and very highly respected but will he be good enough in the EPL? Let us hope so

  165. Dont know if anyone saw this or posted it but an amusing quote from Sagna – “I joke with him and say ‘Eboue, I play because the boss is resting you for the big games’ but he says ‘No Bac, you’re older so when you’re tired, I’ll play’, but I’m only a few months older.”

You might be right but I’m not sure. I could live with Distin as I’ve rated him for some time.

    On old twinkle toes :~)

  167. One of the rags is suggesting that AW will get a defensive midfielder so that song can drop back to CB if necessary…..

    Spot on son, spot on!

  169. Ouch Limpar!

Maybe I’ll change my opinion from sh1te (a bit harsh as I said before) to utterly average. Either way, not good enough is the point.

Maybe you should also add . “That’s my opinion”
