Arsenal Find Three Is The Magic Number

West Ham United 0 – 3 Arsenal

0 – 1 van Persie (13)
0 – 2 Walcott (41)
0 – 3 van Persie (77 pen)

Arsenal returned to winning ways with a comfortable win at Upton Park yesterday. Amid the Last Rites being administered to Avram Grant’s reign, Robin van Persie took the headlines with a brace of goals but Theo Walcott’s contribution should not go unnoticed; a goal, an assist and winning the penalty to seal victory. Wayne Bridge was baffled, bemused and eventually substituted, a strain caused by the misery heaped on him by the England youngster.

Following the criticism of performances against Leeds and Ipswich – useful advanced scouting for West Ham for next season – Wenger resorted to his in-form and strongest starting line-up. It was more balanced than the two previous fixtures where the squad rotation took ill-effect.

It took Arsenal thirteen minutes to break the deadlock. Nasri had given West Ham a warning, his shot saved comfortably by Green but that message went unheeded. Wilshere slid a pass to Walcott, who found himself in acres of space on the right. Bridge ambled to meet him but the England international was not waiting and calmly passed the ball into the middle, Nasri ran to the near post and dummied, van Persie applied the clinical finish. It was all too easy.

Six minutes later, the contest should have been over. Walcott chased with Tomlinson, the defender doing enough to send Walcott off balance, his tame effort going straight into the arms of Green. Song has been reading from the Fat Frank book of Shooting, the Cameroonean almost found the net with the help of a sizeable deflection.

But this is Arsenal and things are never easy. Djourou, under pressure from Carlton Cole, underhit his backpass. The West Ham forward pounced but found Szczesny blocking his path. The rebound fell to Boa Morte before Hines took over, his shot narrowly clearing the crossbar.

Yet this was a sporadic attack. Normal service was resumed as Nasri gambolled through the West Ham midfield, feeding van Persie whose shot struck the base of the post before cannoning to safety. How many times has that happened for the Dutchman? Sufficient in quantity to have put Thierry Henry’s scoring record under threat had they found the net instead.

Nasri then missed having been sent into space by Cesc, dragging his shot wide. With each attack, the West Ham deliquesced and the second Arsenal goal would follow with four minutes to half-time. Fabregas freed van Persie, the Dutchman got to the by-line before pulling the ball back into the centre where Theo Walcott stole a march on the hapless Bridge, his shot hitting the roof of the net.

The second half found Arsenal playing within themselves, ready to repel any West Ham attacks whilst prepared to hit on the counter whenever an opportunity presented itself.

The only opportunity of note for the hosts was Sears cross which looked as though it may sneak into the far corner, Szczesny tipping over the bar instead. The rout was completed when Theo Walcott forced Bridge into yet another error. Walcott nipped forward chasing a ball into the area but away from goal. Bridge lunged, missed the ball and took Walcott instead. van Persie drilled the ball past Green.

Three points were taken comfortably. Wilshere might have made it more emphatic but the headlines were taken by the lugubrious Grant and his shambolic employers. And I doubt Arsene is complaining; third still, two points off the top and hoping for a belated Christmas Miracle with Spurs taking points off Manchester United this afternoon.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. First? Yes!

  2. Another fine review YW, I saw a bit of shaky moments on our right back, but that’s probably JD’s fatigue and Eboue’s new to the role. Besides that we are punishing WHU, especialy our front 4, Fab, Nas, Theo & RvP. Afterall, we are the Arsenal!

Kinda hope the Spuds burried MU today, well let’s keep our finger crossed. Our nemesis might come handy for us :p

    Cheers,

  3. The chickens are coming home to roost and the epidemic has now started. We had years to plan for this but nothing has been done. Instead of listening to the advice of serious media commentators, we have cut off our noses to spite our face. Two centre backs, a goalkeeper, a midfielder enforcer and a striker have been recommended for years. My Aunt Sally’s dog knows this, but we have to settle for the likes of Denilson and Shea on the bench. Shea is almost an anagram of urea, which was used to weaken steel, so you can see we are piss poor and weak on the bench. We are now half way through the window and Wenger has done sweet fa so far. He is leading us all to a merry dance. We expect big signings, but at the moment we have a Japanese and a brazilian who are not even allowed into the country. What is the use in that ? We need prooven quality – Lucio, Pique or Puyol. If that bench goes into the Barcelona game it will be armageddon. It will set us back 20 years.

  4. Well said Muppet. I only disagree about Lucio, Puyol and Pique. Those are nancy boys who’d only add to our disgraceful tippy- tappy- going -nowhere rubbish football. I still subscribe wholeheartedly to the big lump of a CB that can head it past the half way line and kick it out of the stadium and all the way to Drayton Park! Without a “PROPER” CB we’re doomed.

I’m off to Le Grove to discuss Tactics now… or may be I’m off to the shop to get me some Tic tacs. It’s rather too easy to confuse the one with the other

  5. Lucky you. I’m banned on Le Grove. I don’t know why, I fit in quite nicely.

  6. Great post as usual Yogi. Hope spurs can do themselves a favour by beating manutd. But keep reminding myself that they got beat 3:0 by 10 men at home a couple of seasons ago. Expecting the spuds to win might be asking for too much!

  7. Nice article and a very enjoyable read as always. West Ham, as a lot of people have noted, were weakened by the absence of key players but I still think that West Ham away is always a tricky tie for us. I thought that the team showed maturity, patience and a very good level of concentration through out the match and the clean sheet is a big bonus too.

On Djourou, I have to say that while he didn’t have an outstanding match as he did against Chelsea or even ManCity I think that Fatigue must be an issue for him… and it’s not going to get any easier as I’m guessing that Wenger may just have to play him again on Wednesday… or he could play Sagna at CB and leave Eboue at RB for the Leeds game. The other option may be to play Song at CB and start with Denilson. The bottom line for me is that Djourou looks like he needs a rest.

All in all things are ticking along nicely, ever onwards and upwards. COYG!

  8. It’s almost a win win situation. If the spuds fuck it up and lose, we can at least celebrate that. If it’s a draw, then we know the spuds have stuttered and we have gained ground on the mancs. If the spuds win, then we have gained even more ground on he mancs.

  9. Excellent summary, as ever. Great to see van Persie back near his best. When he’s on song, he makes everyone else play better with his link-up play and deft touch.

I suppose I should feel sorry for Wayne Bridge – he’s hardly played this season and Walcott exploited his rustiness to the full. But, nah …

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2011/01/15/rusty-bridge-crumbles-under-arsenal-barrage/

  10. Nasri’s dummy for the 1st took 3 defenders with him. Class.

  11. The thing about Le Grove is that you have to prepared to wear your ignorance with pride… it’s not enough to own a dunce’s hat, on Le Grove you have wear it at a jaunty angle with a flashing light on top of the said hat whilst wearing clowns shoes and tripping over your own feet… whether metaphorically or in reality behind your keyboard makes little difference.

All that and being able to call Arsene Wenger a lying, senile, deluded and penny pinching sex maniac is what it takes to make it onto Le Grove.

You know…. I think I’ll just go down the shops instead.

  12. Do we really want the spuds to win? I dont think i can put up with them in the title race again!!. cant stand the wancs winning so a nice 4-4 draw would suffice and both of the c*nts can drop points.

  13. Want spuds to win, never. A draw will do nicely as both drop points. Plus a sending off and injury or two for each team :)

  14. I think we need to do the unthinkable and hope for the Spuds to win today. Our destination is not just to stay ahead of those Stratford heading losers but to win the BPL. A 5-4 Spud victory would do both defences no favours on the confidence front and would definitely favour our cause. So, for once my hopes needs-must go against my heart.

As for yesterday, I think YW said it all. Walcott’s performance must be seen as one in the eye for that Einstein of modern football (tWaddle) with more talent and intelligence being shown than should have been possible. If Cesc finds his full fitness and form, I am almost frightened for those who will face us in the months (and years) ahead.

Onto Wednesday with our strongest available team and things start to look brilliant – surely, even in the eyes of the blind and ignorant commentators about whom we have shared many words and views!

    COYG

  15. While I was very pleased with this win, the defence provided several worrying moments for me. At times, Eboue hardly new what he was doing at right back. Going forward he was fine, it was the defensive side of his game that was found wanting as was commented on throughout the match. If we had faced a stronger team, my thinking suggested that we would not have kept a clean sheet. Denilson is another of our players who does not understand or even have the stomach for defensive football. He gives up on the ball too easily when it is taken over by the opposition and virtually refuses to maintain a goalside position. Increasingly, I wonder if Denilson has the quality to play at the top level particularly on a team such as Arsenal who may well be headed for a league championship.

Still, the top level of our league will be a challenge for our team. As some have noted on our blog, we are not quite the finished article. It has to be mentioned that it is obvious to all and sundry that Arsenal have a weakness in the defence and require some very serious additions to ameliorate the problem. I am in wonder why it is that Wenger has not dipped into the transfer market at this point. I cannot believe that he will attempt to finish the season without making a purchase!

  16. Well said Joshua but fickle Arsenal fans don,t know what they want from match to match ,always blaming someone else (Denilson or Bendtner ) for inept wasteful chances onn goal from Walcot and Arshavin,so what games do these fickle fans actually watch or are they actually dozing off and missing these incidents i just mentioned ,time to sell off Arshavin already as all his wasted chances seem to be a big joke for someone earning 75000 pound , a week ,match after match ,as shown by Arshavin,s attitude on the pitch and Walcott has no clue ,lousy first touch and a kick and run England style mentality that hasn,t produced another world cup for England in more than 45 years and not likely to produce like Walcott at any time soon?

  17. Two Owls,

    Are you joking? If not…

  18. Samuel,

That must be good stuff. Where do you buy it?

  19. make or break time is here again, and were down to the bare bones defensively. In all honesty im glad squillachi got injured when he did, it means Arsene can save face and will not have to openly admit that his defensive signings have not been his finest, english steel at the back is what won us trophies, if what’s been said today is true then I fear the worst, Upson and Campbell, tried and failed remember wigan last season-I was thinking then we needed freshing up at the back because Sol was awful, we need experience and the legs to back it up. Then I read that were getting priced out of a move for Cahill, he’s one we have to tie up. Our position is strong at the minute, but we wont last the distance because our team isnt much greater than last season, eboue is no replacement for sagna, clichy has gone to pot, our two remaining CB have good spells where they look solid with pace, but they make too many mistakes which Leeds and Ipswich exploited too easily, we’ve to put our faith in them again-3 big games in 9 days, these are games that will make or break our season. Song needs help in the DM area, he’s too nice, we need a essien type player to compliment Song and to get stuck in with meaty tackles. We for once have a fantastic chance to bag silverware this season but Arsene needs to spend the kitty and stop acting like Daniel Levy and the Spuds…we’re better than that

  20. Arsenal doesn,t need Denilson to defend too much what we need is for him to push upfield and support Cesc,Samir,Rosiscky or whoever else is playing upfront and leave the defensive issues to Song,Wilshere or Djourou ,the midfield is already to crowded with players getting in each others but there are no quality crosses coming from our flanks ,onto Chamakh or Bendtner,s heads to score from so Chamakh has to drop deep, every game to collect the ball ,crowding the mdfield even more but we don,t blame our two inept wingers for the inability to cross balls we blame Bendtner or Chamakh instead ,why,s this as Sagna and Clichy cannot put the crosses over game after game ?

  21. Was it a coincidence that we played a faster tempo better game without Denilson in midfield????

  22. I agree with Samuel.

Nasri’s rubbish. Not direct enough, not fast enough. Doesn’t play like an orthodox right whinger. Now they’ve stuck him on the ‘left’.

    What is going on?

  23. Jan Vertonghen could be the man for us. Can play centrehalf and is a good enough baller to play in midfield too. Wicked free kicks and good going forward to shoot.. Another leftie too which will keep a balance with Song.

  24. Or maybe Jagielka, he can cover right back or DM too cant he? I reckon if we get a player in it will be someone who is versatile enough to cover a couple of positions

  25. Jeez!we win and still some complain!or has the whole aclf house become ironic or is it sarcastic.quoting commentators who were poor at best is taking it too far.

    Weightings applied on ratings:

    -2 Eboue
    -1 French speaking
    +2 Favourite players

  27. Two Owls | January 16, 2011 at 12:18 pm |
WTF? What game were you watching? Eboue may have had his difficulties in the 1st half but in the 2nd he was a marauding right back. Methinks you gave too much attention to that twat Stewart Robson who was FSC’s plundit.
Your comments on Denilson almost qualifies for the le-shite looney bin. He came on at the 75th minute mark and all he had to do was pass and move as part of our ball retention tactics with the game handily won. He never lost the ball once and hardly misplaced a pass. I am tired of reading this type of b.s. from ignoramuses that have already made up their mind that Denilson is useless because he doesn’t fit into the mould of a typical d**mer.

  28. Statto confirmation courtesy of ‘Orbinho’:

“(RVP) has hit the woodwork every 452 minutes, more regularly than any other Premier League player since Aug 2007.”

  29. Another great stat thanks to ‘Orbinho’:

“Robin van Persie scored his 50th & 51st League goals in this match – the fifth player to pass this milestone in the Premier League era.”

  30. Oh dear me, dear me.
Poor old Wenger. Can’t he see the light? We need at least one central defender at any price even if it means being mugged and raped by other clubs. Step up all over-priced English cloggers. The fans are desperate and they “have an opinion.”

  31. Someone, anyone please tell me GoonerAndy was being “ironical”

  32. Someone, anyone please tell me GoonerAndy was being “ironical.”

  33. Eberyone know British Steel was renamed and taken over by a French company called Kourus (or is that a men’s fragrance?) Anyhoo, since privatisation in the 80s British Steel has been on the wain and is nether very british or steely.

  34. Muppet…

You are on fire today! I love the ratings but as much as love the ratings I think that I love the weighting even more! Quality stuff…

  35. I was lucky enough to be at the game last night (although the journey there and back was a blummin nightmare, thank you TFL!) and WEst ham seemed to target our ride side and Eboue was put under a lot of pressure, however, apart from the poor back pass from Johan (the only thing I recall him doing wrong) the hammers hardly had a sniff and contrary to reports that they were disinterested, rubbish etc, they workled their socks off and it was only due to a fantastic team performance (thats TEAM, as in 11 players, not just a few favourites) by Arsenal that wore them down in the ned.

A great win and we could’ve scored even more, if Green didnt have his customary man of the match game vs us.

The over reactions after the Ipswich game (the whole team- there’s that word again- played poorly IMO) were truly shameful and embarrassing, so its no surprise a few still feel the need to pick holes in a brilliant result and performance. But thats their problem.

  36. All round solid, focussed performance yesterday. Just what was needed.

Cesc is so influential. He looked distracted at Ipswich & the rest followed suit. Yesterday , when he was up for it we were a diferent team.

I agree with some of the earlier comments about a defensive signing – versatility would be very useful

  37. British Steel?? ?Tsk!

  38. Would Iron Man do? But then again he aint made of steel and is American.

    Paulie

I think there will be a defensive signing. Who it will be is anyone’s guess. I can’t see why Cahill is rated so highly TBH tho, and no way is he worth anywhere near £20m.

  39. Habari Darius na Firstlady, uko poa?

  40. Off to watch the spuds play manutd. Nothing more satisfying for a Kenyan gooner than to see manutd get beaten. Hope the spuds make my day. I think tribal gooners want the spuds to lose though!

  41. MUPPET – Just the fact that you are banned from Le Groan cracks me up no end mate!! It takes a real Arsenal fan to get banned from that site, great posting and love the player weightings :) COYG!!!!! And COYS!!!!

  42. DENILSON WATCH v West Ham

    76 min – Comes on
    77 min – misses ball
78 min – fails to prevent West Ham attack
    79 min – is outmuscled
    80 min – outmuscled – agin
81 min – jogs back slowly after West Ham attack
    82 min – jogs forward
83 min – fails to prevent West Ham attack
84 min – beaten in the air
85 min – jogs back slowly
86 min – fails to prevent West Ham attack
87 min – standing with hands on hips
88 min – lands on backside
    89 min – jogs sideways
    90 min – passes sideways
    91 min – looks disinterested
    92 min – trudges off

  43. 97 mins; Outmuscled in queue for post match shower

  44. The idiots who say Theo doesn’t have a football brain need to watch his goal again. The way he took Bridge out of the play was amazing and the finish was sublime.

  45. All the games so far have ended in draws.. Hope it continues with the Sp*r-ManUre game…

  46. 3 draws so far today, here’s hoping for a 4th, still want Liverpool relegated though.

  47. It is really weird having to quasi-support the spuds for a game…does not feel at all natural…spuds have looked the better side so far.

  48. VDV must have lost his marbles. Giving Uncle Mike the chance to flash a yellow on behalf of his beloved ManU.

  49. TV5 going to have surgery on Tuesday..

    blog.emiratesstadium.info/archives/10346

  50. Have to say excellent refereeing so far

  51. Goddamn Achilles.
No surprise there then, seeing as he’s already missed half the season, although I can see in the far distance more storm clouds collecting over Mt. D**M.

It’s going to be another fun countdown to the transfer window D(**M)-Day.
    Joy.

  52. I miss Vermaelan’s little rampages. Don’t know about ‘Plan C’, but can we call Djourou’s ramble into the opposing pelanty box ‘Plan D’?

  53. Was surprised by that ramble to be honest, in fact in the last 10 minutes or so I think he spent more time in their box than ours.

  54. I was told this was going to be a footballing feast between the league’s entertainers. I got a long-ball scrapfest between cunts.

And how come nobody gets booked for waving an imaginary card anymore? It got Gilberto sent off a few years ago.

  55. The Spuds are doing well enough so far. But they do seem to be a one-trick pony offensively. Bale down the left to the by-line and cross. I don’t think that will be enough. But there is one half to go and a lot could happen.

  56. Certainly a tense match but lacking in artistry.

  57. I would not be at all sad if the Mancs and Puds cancel each other out to a nil nil draw…Spuds should be one up though…I just fear the Mancs may steal a goal…hope I am wrong, we need the Mancs to lose all the points they can.

  58. The spuds will find a way to cock this up..

  59. ‘deliquesced ‘ ooooo!

Is it me or is Muppet now posting post ironically in other names now as well, namely two Owls and Goonerandy?

I can’t stand this mancs/spud game. I keep hoping for the attacking side to score before changing my mind and hoping they’ll miss. So far my second wish has been granted 100%. Bollocks to the lot of them.

  60. cbob, me tooo… hoping for a 0-0 draw…

injuries and/or sending offs would cheer me up even more…

  61. “Bollocks to the lot of them”

Most sensible thing said all day!!

  62. Limestonegunner

Interesting that Red Nose didn’t put out is attacking football killer lineup that he uses whenever ManU plays Arsenal (even at home in OT)–recalling Berbatov (or other striker) and using a five man midfield with Ji-Sung Park. No respect for Spuds away at SHL even. That shows that for all the talk, Spuds attack doesn’t frighten the top sides.

Good luck expecting them to get a result. But hopefully it will stay a 0-0 draw. The commentator is desperately trying to make out like this is a fantastic game.

  63. Limestonegunner

Shotta, they are a one trick pony. 7am did a very nice analysis of their “attacking” game and demonstrated from the chalkboards that it is a quick paced longball and cross-in game–no real sophistication to the attack because they have pushed Modric back and Van der Vaart doesn’t play a disciplined game as part of a strategy but more like a free agent running about and pouncing on the balls that come out of the box on Bale’s crosses.

  64. Have decided I want the Spuds to win, I know, I know, it feels wrong but we all know in the end if we finish above U Shited then we more than likely will win the league, plus the Spuds will fall away eventually. hehe They always do!!!

  65. a 0-0 fraw will do it.

We need to keep all fronts open and right now we lead on goals scored. we may yet be topping the leagues in few games time on just that. Man u are 2 behind us i think on goals scored, we will soon match them on goals diff and points

  66. The annoying thing with the spuds is that they don’t look like they’ll score. Then Hernandes may come in with the sucker punch.

  67. Bye Bye Rafael!!! Seeya!!!

  68. Limestonegunner

Did Siralex transfer Mike Dean to Spuds this transfer window?

  69. Just got off the phone with a U Shited friend of mine. We where never more in agreement as to what an over-hyped scrappy longball game this has turned out to be!! What happened to Spuds? “The most exciting team in the league!!” Meh!!! Is ‘Arry avin a larf? He said it himself, he would rather watch Arsenal v Man U Shited than any other match-up. Nuff said.

  70. @Limestone, nope cos i hear vidic has gotten aways with all vidic fouls including holding in the pen box

  71. 0-0 draw. Dropped points by both can only be good for us. The announcers are trying to gild the lily but both teams were unconvincing. Roll on you gunners.

  72. Sp*d almost gifted the game at the end…

    2pts dropped by ManUre…

  73. well thats 2 dropped out of the supposed 7 points max that man u leads us with so not all bad since spurs also drop 2. That has to be a positive for us

  74. Limestonegunner

irish, totally dire affair. No way to dress this up as anything other than an uninventive, tired, predictable, and unsophisticated display from these teams. Frankly, the sending off let ManU off the hook. Now they can claim that their tepid play was a heroic in hanging onto a point. But in fact neither team looked likely to score the entire second half. Spuds with no ideas and one-dimensional play. Pathetic on all sides.

This league must be ours. We are the only salvation. Frankly, if we don’t take it, a big opportunity is lost. None of these other teams is convincing. we just need to get on a good run and we’ll make up points on ManU. RvP is going to have a fantastic second half. A center half to keep the back line from being burnt out as we go for four trophies and I can see us making our mark on this season.

  75. Irish – You may be interested in knowing that today is a bit of painting before the missus arrives. (Meanwhile you have kept me informed and entertained.)

  76. Best outcome we could have hoped for – 2 points closer to the mancs and 2 points further away from the spuds! Someone will beat the mancs soon – could well be us!

  77. Limestonegunner

Team Spirit, tough to see Vidic’s shirt pulling inside the box. He got called for one late on against Defoe, so I still think the sending off was a pretty decisive call in making ManU’s point look good.

  78. Bloody awful game. The commentators kept telling me what a great game it was. Liars.

Limestone is correct. We are the only salvation.

  79. 0-0 borefest.
    Both sides drop 2 points.
Spuds out of CL places, falling further behind Chelski.
We can still be the ones to end ManUre’s unbeaten run.
Mancs weakened by suspension and injury.

    *rubs hands gleefully*
    Excellent!

  80. when do we play man u?

  81. cbob – Agreed. It was technically a poor game. A dirge of hopeful long balls lumped into the box in the hope that someone gets on the end of it. No wonder Arsene refuses to engage in these tactics.

  82. Limestonegunner

Passenal, I don’t mind ManU continuing unbeaten as long as there are plenty of draws like today so that we close the gap and can end the run in April in a game that puts us beyond them in the title race. I didn’t want the Spuds to claim the credit for ending the run. So this is the best possible outcome (could have been improved with a few more sendings off but nothing’s perfect!).

  83. PS – To show bad the game is, the FSC (US network) postgame show could only come up with 3 or 4 highlights.

  84. Efan Ekoku couldn’t stop jizzing himself over Vidic and thought Rafael’s second yellow was very soft. He even went as far as saying that the referee influenced the game to the detriment of Man U shited as if the little Brazilian cunt didn’t catch Assou-Ekotto.

  85. Limestonegunner

Team Spirit, in April. Title decider or when we put ourselves out of reach of ManU and can relax for the FA cup final and CL final.

  86. Limestonegunner

Gains, I do think the second yellow was harsh. As I said above, it is however the only thing keeping ManU from having to face how poor they were, so I wish it hadn’t happened. It is not as if they would have found a way to score.

  87. I wonder if Bill is diappointed that his secret crush didn’t open up that seven point lead on us as he predicted.

  88. @ Team Spirit
    Saturday 30th April, 2011.

  89. well here goes some of your “seasoned” commentators

Graham Taylor on BBC Radio Five Live: “The position that Spurs are in at the moment, I think it might have been as well for them to throw the lot at Manchester United. But perhaps they did that too early, and when they were against 10 men were even more worried about being caught by a quick counter-attack. But I enjoyed that game because these two teams both try to attack when they get the ball and you don’t always see that in the Premier League.”

  90. owh this must be puntid hell. Who they gonna side with here?future migthy england manager Harry or brontosaurusAlex? Can they do as Efan and say that the ref was biased towards Spurs?

  91. @ team spirit – i see they went the coward way as usual….

  92. I have to wash my TV with soap & water, the commentators wanked themselves pretty hard over Vidic’ performance…it was borderline xxx rated material and not suitable of under age viewers.

Not only that, but did you see how they defended the curly haired c*nt United’s right back and ripped the referee for an absolutely correct decision?

I think it’s good result for us.

  93. Limestonegunner

The commentariat has invested so much in the usual worship of Manure and the glorification of novelty act Spuds that it is impossible for them now to admit that the myths are totally wrong. Namely, that Spuds do not play wonderful attacking football but rather a fater paced version of long ball and cross it-in, hope VdV can bang in a rebound if Crouch doesn’t get the header in. Namely, that ManU are an adventurous team that tries to attack. Again, I say, the sending off was the best thing that happened to ManU all game–they could sit back and pretend that this was in response to being a man down when it was obvious they had little going forward.

  94. The second yellow wasn’t harsh at all. It was obstruction. If you don’t want to catch a player stop running or get the fuck out of his way. Raising your hands doesn’t mean you are avoiding contact. I just hope the FA takes further disciplinary action on Rafael for the way he verbally abused the referee. Ditto for the Pikey.

  95. Can I just mention, YW, that I actually got the musical reference this time. So all in all, cracking day.

  96. I know that I’m an Arsenal fan and I fully understand that my opinions are probably biased no matter how objective I try to be but I cannot for the life of me work out what all these Arsenal moaners are so impressed with when it comes to either United or Tottenham (soon to be Stratford)… I honestly don’t get this tactical genius that Fergie possesses. Don’t get me wrong, the guy is no mug but I cannot begin to understand the need some of our fans have for us to adopt what we just saw today… is this the much vaunted tactical thingymajig that Wenger lacks? That match I just saw between Spurs and ManU is what Valdano calls “shit-0n-a-stick” with very good reason. All that talent on the pitch and all they seemed to want to do was hoof the damn ball! What a waste…

I keep hearing that the Premiership is the most popular league in the world but with all due respect this match cannot possibly have enhanced the reputation of English football. What rubbish….

Having said all that the result was rather good for us.

  97. I’d be interested to see how ManU carry this unbeaten label, especially as they’re not playing at all well. But for that rigged match against Blackburn, their goal difference would be pretty ordinary, and they always look short of ideas on the road.

Oh, and that match was f*cking dire. I feel almost guilty for losing two hours on a weekend watching it.

  98. Limestonegunner

Obstruction isn’t an automatic yellow. I never said it wasn’t a foul, so give the foul; yellow was harsh.

Ekotto and several Spuds players were essentially throwing themselves in the way of ManU players and hoping for foul calls. You see Bale do it, Vdv, Lennon, and so on. They had no guts, no belief. Lucky for them they are the flavor of the season and enjoying a love-in from media and referees. But now Spuds are out of the top 4 and probably wondering if there is a way back. This was a game they needed to do more with–they didn’t even look like scoring with an extra man. If AC Milan gets a right back and pays attention to the Inter-Spuds games, that’s it for Spuds this season.

  99. Spurs were a shower of shite because ‘Arry is a coward.

  100. G69 – the pikey could take out a gun and shoot the referee and they would find a way to laugh it off as nothing. Dean must have forgotten that he had already booked the player before he took his card out because there is no way slur will forgive him for that one! Either that or all the criticism of webb has got the rest of the refs running scared?

  101. Mongolian Gooner

Imagine Manures stay unbeaten and we win the league. How pathetic it would look. They would certainly be the first and the last team to go unbeaten all season and not to win it. haha

  102. @ poodle… LOL. what were u expecting… so u know how hyped this game has been by them?

  103. What? Assou-Ekotto was taken out as he was breaking away. If the ref hadn’t given the second yellow it would’ve been a joke. That was a tactical foul.

  104. Limestonegunner

Breaking away? Taken out? Whatever. Last thing I want to do is keep arguing about a refereeing decision in this game. Especially since it doesn’t detract either way from my more substantive point about how the sending off played to ManU’s advantage ultimately as they appeared to have no ideas going forward. Now the media narrative will be that they rescued a point, which is the real joke for an Arsenal supporter.

  105. Shotta – Screw the painting just make sure you fix that plumbing!!! :) The Girlfriend pissed off again for the day and left me stuck on the sofa watching footie, finishing off munchies and beer left over from yesterdays lay-about. The end is nigh!! Repent all ye sinners!! And burn in hell all ye Spuds!!

  106. Shotta – watching FSC now (is there any way to pixelate out Bartons fat head?) and really as bad as their commentary is the match was even worse, so for once they are making sense as there really were no highlights. A bit harsh on the yellow, but if he did mean it then it is a professional foul which means a booking. Which makes it all the more stupid as he was going nowhere.

  107. LSG – I think you are right as I think Old Red Nose had set his mind on simply not losing today. Sure maybe nick it on the break but overall I believe he simply wants to retain the unbeaten streak. I think it still sticks in his gut that Arsenal have the unbeaten season, he wants that bad and he wants to go on a longer streak than us. Never happen though, not with this team.

  108. Man utd used to play good stuff now they play utter shite, they just have a very good defence. fukin boring lucky bastads.

  109. irishgray, I recall old red nose suggesting our unbeaten run was not worthy because we drew too many games! At least we also played some decent stuff along the way and did not have bent refs giving us a helping hand when we are in danger of losing!

  110. By the way, goal difference between us and United: Arsenal 23, United 24. We’ve let in three more goals than any other top four team but we’ve scored two more than United, eight more than City and seven more than Chelsea.

  111. Passenal – I remember he said that but in all honesty he had too, didn’t he? However looking at U Shited now, outside of us and Shiteh and the Chavs I really do not see any one else beating them. I hate saying that but lets be honest as bad as they are they just keep pulling it off, with a lot of help from the refs it must be said.

Gainsborg69 – I know I was just looking at those stats. Pretty interesting. But what worries me is that we have only scored 2 more than U Shited, what happens though if Shrek starts knocking them in again? Its bound to happen sooner or later. I can’t stand the ugly bollox myself but I will be the first to admit the git is a dam good striker. Not as good as RVP though, never will be either.

  112. irishgray, shrek is a good striker, but he cannot score them on his own and needs the rest of the team to perform creatively. Surely the luck they are existing on cannot continue indefinitely? Blackpool for example will have a go against them and they have pulled off some surprises this season, so I’m not ruling that possibility out either.

  113. Limestonegunner

Irish, Rooney might start scoring more from the chances here or there he has had but not converted. The main thing is that he not create more chances for his team, and so far he hasn’t been playing in such a way as to create a stronger attack. I think their midfield is not that creative so they won’t create much more except when Nani has a really good game.

They can play better but not that much better. At this point they should have shown that ability. Rooney has been back for a while now and the back line has been healthy for some time as well. I think this is what United are as a team. The only player of significance they are missing is Valencia.

I think we can and will play much better. RvP is coming into form and makes the team play much more potently in the attacking third. All we are missing is Vermaelen, Diaby, and Ramsey. Unfortunately, Vermaelen is unlikely to be back soon with the operation. That’s one thing we could really do to shore up the back line and keep Dj and Kos from burning out on games twice a week for the next month.

  114. Limestonegunner

I’ve looked at the fixtures on the schedule for ManU, ManCity and ourselves and we have a much more favorable run-in at this point. Every team is capable of doing damage–that’s understood–but both the Mancs have to play several games against title-contenders as well as serious mid-table/Europa challengers away. We play the Spuds away and will really be up for revenge. Otherwise we don’t encounter any of the contenders until we host ManU on april 30. So I think we have a very good chance to make up 4 or 5 points on both those teams before the ManU game.

Hopefully by then we will have won a trophy (CC) and still be in the FA and CL with the quadruple still on!

  115. Passenal

United have drawn two more games than The Invincibles at this stage of the season so have four points less. They’ve scored more (3) than the 2003-04 team as well as conceding more (4). They are however, not fit to wipe the Arse’s of The Invincibles

    YW

  116. “a long-ball scrapfest between cunts.” …ha ha! Glad I didn’t bother with that then!

  117. LSG – agree we have a better run-in in the next 5-6 weeks but we really do need coverage at back. Until I see Miguel actually play 90 mins I will not be convinced, I would love to see him start against Leeds. Keep Djourou on the bench just in case certainly but that is the game to try him out.

Passenal – I agree they have been extremely lucky, even considering refereeing decisions, and that they have very few injuries. But they always get stronger after the new year. This is just a theory but I honestly think Old Red Nose wanted to be knocked out of the Cup. With Arsene now playing stronger teams in the cup I think he decided to focus on the PL and CL. It also lightens up their schedule and that can make a big difference. How great would it be for Blackpool to beat them? Hats off to Ian Halloway and all at Blackpool, a breath of fresh air!! Wish them all the best.

  118. YW – Your best posting ever!!

  119. Now to watch the Liverpool – Everton game….bestest girlfriend ever!!!!

  120. I wish Walcott would grow a fucking football brain already. He’s twenty fucking one for crying out loud! If you can’t cross the ball at 21 you ain’t ever gonna make it. League One player – tops. Problem is I reckon… he runs so fast his brain shifts to the back of his skull when he’s moving… sort of gets thrown back there… you know… like when fuzz put foot down in the meatwagon to split your wig, get me? And when ees got time to think he just can’t make up his mind cos his brain is still travelling slightly forward I reckon from the momentum and that. That’s what I reckon anyway. Useless. Rapid as fuck, but useless. Give im the ook, Wenger, you mug.

  121. My mate reckons we’ve bid for Sylvain Distin. He has no inside knowledge and no source whatsoever… he just reckons it sounds about right. So make of that what you will… i.e. nothing. He’d fit right in with the other benevolent french bunny rabbit pianist linguists anyway…

  122. Yogi’s Warrior | January 16, 2011 at 7:51 pm

You’ll get no argument from me Yogi!

  123. Limpar – You’ve been reading Muppet’s postings too often I thin :)

  124. Limestonegunner

Looks like it is a “doomer” alter ego, eh LA? Bring the Assist back!

  125. I feel Man Poo`s unbeaten league run will come to an end soon in a game they are not expected to lose. A `coupon buster` if you will.

As for Theo`s football brain & final ball he should take a look at how Lennon always seems to make the right decision. Except when he`s trimming those eyebrows that is.

  126. Walcott, the one without a football brain as you say Limpar, scored a goal, gave an assist and won us the penalty. Useless twat!

  127. @Limpar, what happened to assist anyway?

  128. @ bobby, u are either joking or new else, u should know when muppet and limpar and co are in doom mode

  129. idiot plundit today – ” not a great pass by Lennon but he was going so quick that its almost impossible to get it right, great try from a great player though’

or as we Gunnersare used to hearing – “Walcott does it again, a bad ball in, nobody there and the chance is wasted, no football brain you see, just puts his head down and runs, no idea what to do with the ball, useless”

  130. How come Reina is not being ridiculed and mocked for letting in that first Everton goal? I mean he basically jumped up, spread his arms and legs like he was in Swan Lake and the ball went in between his legs!!! At least Big Al knows the difference between a Beach ball and a football.

  131. When is that c@nt Rooney going to get sent off for dissent!!!! The Hammers game was all about the return of RVP and the combined efforts of the team. I cannot criticise the efforts of the team as the were ruthless and relentless. I agree with others Djorou looked like he needed at rest.

I have everything crossed for RVP to stay fit for the rest of the season. It doesnt take a genius to see that his missing vital games and parts of the season in all the past 5 seasons could have taken us the extra mile

And now for Leeds, Ipswich and Barca. Have just been watching the Barca creamfest against Malaga. Talk about beatng on the small guy.I would love it if we could beat Barca .. love it. COYG

  132. LOVE IT!!!!!!! Arsenal 4 – 0 Barca – (greatest team in the world, Messi greatest player in the world, Xavi and Iniesta greatest midfield players blah blah blah…snooooooorrrrrrrreeee)

Heard it hear first, Ladies and Gents, heard it here first :)

  133. Limestonegunner

Gooner4life, if we beat Barca, I say we will be unstoppable this season and make some big history. What a lift that would be and with what confidence our team would play! And we would be the only ones to beat them in the CL playing football rather than anti-football kryptonite tactics. How sweet that would be! No more “Barca-lite” tags.

  134. Gooner4life, the BBB have such an easy ride in La Liga, I would love to see them taken down a peg or two as they never have to face the kind of intensity that Arsenal face week in week out.

  135. Limestonegunner

Balague had an article a couple or three weeks back that made the case that La Liga was as tough or stronger a league than the PL in response to the idea that it was just a 2 team league with a host of rubbish. I should look it up and post it so we can discuss what we think of his statistical evidence and reasoning. But basically I just can’t buy that it is as competitive or physical as the PL. When I watch a La Liga game, I see good technical play but none of the speed and intensity that is common in the PL. Their style is quite successful also in Europe, but the PL is exceptionally grueling I think.

  136. Limestonegunner- Don’t expect anything else from that spanish bloke after all his bread and butter is talikng about la liga. As I’m typing this I have Barca V Malga on tv, at the moment they are 4- 1 up the crowd are quiet and the game is dull. Barca walk on the field score few goals and they go home. I would very much like to see Barcelona play in the premiership. I honestly believe they will struggle with the physical power and non stop football we play through out the year. People say, well they are beating everybody in europe including the English teams. That is exctly the point, I don’t hear Messi Xavi or iniesta got a kick and they are out for few months and they are always fresh coming to europe. few trips up north and they will come back bruised and battered everytime. I’m taking nothin away from their good football but can they play the same football when they have very tough teams playing against them week in week out? I doubt it.

  137. Limestonegunner, I suspect they do well in Europe because the referees tend not to be as ‘lenient’ as the refs in the PL. Every ‘tumble’ is rewarded with a free kick taking the sting out of their opponents. The CL final we played most of it with 10 men and last season too many of our best players were out injured to make it an even contest. I want to see our best XI against theirs then we’ll have a better idea of where we are in relation to the ‘best team in the world’ tm!

  138. 1 loose, I know he is biased but that doesn’t mean he can’t make a good argument. Unfortunately I can’t find the article where he laid out his reasoning and the stats he used to make his case, which I didn’t ultimately accept (I repeat) on the evidence of my own senses when watching games.

The last really competitive struggle I remember was Barca-espanyol and I thought Espanyol was jobbed a couple of times by the ref, but I liked what I saw in that derby. Espanyol gave them no respect and were shutting them down and being physical, but the refs started to punish them in ways that never seems to happen in Arsenal games and eventually Barca broke through and made the contest look much more lopsided than it really was. That’s the issue-technical play doesn’t get the same protection in English football.

  139. Passenal, I agree. I am looking forward to matching up with them with this team:

    Fab/Scz
Eboue (Sagna out for first leg, alas)-Djourou-Kos (or new CB?)-Clichy
    Song-Fabregas-Wilshere (or Denilson)
    Walcott-RvP-Nasri

With Arshavin, Diaby, and Chamakh on the bench.

I think we’ll give them a better contest. They were quite fearful of Walcott’s speed and Nasri has emerged. RvP wasn’t there for it and we also lacked Song. In the second leg we were completely depleted.

  140. Limestonegunner- her is my humble analysis to Mr Balague
Premirship- No winter break, Refs overlook hard tackles few legs broken with 2 yeras , players physically stronger faster, (In their faces, let them know ) tactics, and teams have a lot of dosh to spend on players.
La liga- Refs blow for theatrics, Long winter break, teams like to play it on the floor and not physical. 2 rich teams the rest feeding on scraps.

Sunderland have spent 12 millions on Asamoah Gean . I have never heard a spanish team spending 15 million on a player other than Barca and Madrid.

    Big difference I say

  141. Irishgray – your gf has been round my house all day, again. She never stops talking either, please keep her at home.
YW – how come the psot is not showing up in IE8 (on W7)?

  142. YW-the same here. I can’t see your post, I’m a accessing this post through the link you left in yesterday’s post

  143. MDGunner – Dam she can talk, right? Well, have to say thanks mate, had a great time watching all that footie, without the usual background noise. :) Are you free Wednesday night as I have a few buddies who are interested in coming over and watching the game? But only if eh..you know..I can keep the background noise to a minimum. Just figured I’d ask.

  144. MD Gunner / 1LC

The blog seems to be working fine in Firefox, Chrome and IE8 on W7 for me. This comment has been left using the latter.

I just opened http://aculturedleftfoot.wordpress.com and everything is hunky-dory.

    YW

  145. J-E-T-S!!!!! Fuck yea!!! Great weekend all round, can’t wait for Wednesday. COYG!!!!!

  146. Well, heck, I dunno. I would rate Saturday as a small step behind first half v Man Citeh in style, sustained tempo, control, passing, my god what passing, seriously incredible passing (we don’t do the one-two, we do the ‘Z’ and even attempt the ‘X’), pressing, and shooting threat, replete with a Djourou “this is how it’s done” run into the box, despite his vain attempt to level matters with an enticing backpass into the path of their striker. I would even give high marks on sartorial elegance, as in, man, we just looked good. West Ham tried but had no answers to this at all.

The thing that strikes me is that one, twice, three times, we are reaching a level that is world class, meant in the strictest sense of that word; and is exactly where Wenger aspires. The more, the more you see.

Welcome back RvP, 2 goals and an assist. Wilshere’s best game to date and that’s ominous. Song on song. Walcott threatening. Nasri at peak. And Fabregas, in this milieux, was simply majestic. It’s our best line-up. Djourou and Kos assured. HM Eboue, king of kings, was excellent despite finding himself a ways away from the defence at times.

  147. I thought we were excellent. The only player who had a bit of a mare was Djourou, but he has been excellent so far thi sseason was was due a bad one.

Wilshere/Song/Cesc ran the game from the 1st, to th 90th minute. RvP really looked sharp, and when he plays well we realy do look a very different animal. Nasri just oozes class, and whilst Theo will always look clumsy on the ball his pace and movement will always see him get chances. As long as he continue taking his chances (10 in 20 now), he is well worth his place in the side.

Theo is starting to remind me of Freddie; I realise on the surface they look completely different, but their impact on, and role in the team is starting to bear similarities. Niether looked awfully comfortable on the ball, and looked a bit at odds with “Wengerball”. But Freddie’s goal return was so important, and I think Theo is starting to look that way.

  148. My paper said Wayne Bridge allowed Sammy Nasri to ‘lazily’ step over Walcott’s measured assist… fucking idiots. He leapt over it sharp as anything… it was inspired. Philistines.

  149. Kenny Dalglish. another foreign manager who cant speak english.

  150. Theo reminds me of Michael Owen at his Pool peak, you know when every lady in the vicinity was crooning over him, ooh Michael (well, OK, mine anyway), only Theo looks better and faster. His accurate and powerful shooting is tremedous and is, like Owen, becoming is greatest asset. Freddie was, to me, more about ‘impact’ on the left. He’d get the ball, and so often throw defenders into spasms of back-peddling chaos, running at them like a Nordic warrior of legend, we wasn’t that fast but had a great burst of speed, or do something unusual with Bobby and Thierry in the mix.

  151. Easy to see why Muppet is….. a muppet- and for that matter why he is banned from sites. His argument is as unconvincing as the logic of turning shea into urea (50% like and 50% not). Thankfully those who own and run arsenal do not listen to pundits who are usually 80% wrong (That is mostly wrong muppet).
As more and more Billionaires enter the fray it will become increasingly difficult for Arsenal to keep up with their current fantastic ability to: consistently challenge for all titles, play delicious football, produce fantastic facilities and balance their books, but I enjoy living and playing within our means. It stands for something which our young squad is part of.

  152. Now Duke, that is funny.

  153. It does make me laugh how Kenny mimics the actions on the field, heading, shooting, tackling, throwing his arms in despair or in joy. I kind of doubt he’s much of a tactician, but he sure loves his team and I guess gives them mesmerising and passionate speeches which no one actually understands.

  154. Another one falls into Muppet’s lure.

    Come into my parlour…

  155. Theo has been superb so far – two brilliant pull backs. Pulls back. Whatever.
