Halfway Point Reached – Can 2011 Deliver?

Many years ago, these isles were submerged in a newly-privatised company’s slogan, “It’s good to talk“. Arsene echoed that view but was referring to his defence in the aftermath of the Wigan match.

The manager observed,

We need to communicate much better. That’s something we need to rectify. Nobody is taking charge on the organisation side, there is no voice when the focus drops a little bit. You don’t feel that anybody takes charge on alertness and we need to communicate much better than that.

The fingers are pointing at the defence but Wenger was being much more general. At set-pieces, organisation falls not just on the defenders, their colleagues further up the pitch know that they have roles to fulfil as well. What was missing in this instance was a voice, a leader, not as The Sun claimed that the team must learn to speak English.

Disappointingly, the key error came from the most experienced defender. An own goal can happen to anyone but it was a lapse in concentration that put him in the wrong position at the time. Only Squillaci will know why this happened. Even then, the key thing is to learn from the mistake. It has occurred, the cost felt and it was not the only cause of failure in not winning, something that is too readily and willingly forgotten.

A lack of leadership has been a common theme for complaint in recent season. There have been strong personalities on the pitch during this time so the squad and Wenger have to put this right; we must maintain belief that they will do so.

Amid all of this, the halfway point of the season has been reached. Arsenal sit third in the table, two points off the summit, a good position to be in. Were a grade issued at this moment in time, 7/10 would be my verdict.

It has been good so far, with the promise of more to be delivered. Only twice in Wenger’s reign have Arsenal failed to gain the same or more points in the second half of the season. From a position of 36 or more points at this stage of the season, Arsenal have never finished lower than third. Only once with a lower total has the title been delivered.

Can the end of the season see Arsenal crowned Champions? They are as inconsistent as those around them. The poor run of results from November is I would say, guardedly, behind us. Guarded because it is two months since Arsenal last went more than two games without a Premier League defeat. Even then, the best run of the season came at the start with a run of three wins and two draws. Confidence appears to be the key. That should have been gained from the win over Chelsea, not just the result but the performance.

With the form shown by Arsenal, Chelsea and to an extent Manchester City, the major surprise of the season is that an undefeated Manchester United are not clear at the top of the table. From this Arsenal can take hope – a good run put together now increases the pressure on them and those around us. But that run has to be put together, something of which we cannot be certain.

There have been several plus points. Firstly, the return of Cesc and van Persie from injury strengthens the starting line-up. Never mind that they are not both in their best form, absences curtail that. This will change and they will find form. Elsewhere, the performances of Wilshere, Nasri and Chamakh have been possibly better than Wenger expected.

Certainly, Wilshere is clearly the best young English player in the Premier League, evidenced by his inclusion in Fabio Capello’s senior international squads. Nasri, despite protestations from across North London and their media puppets to the contrary, has been the Player of the Season thus far.

Theo Walcott’s improved finishing should also be highlighted. Previous campaigns have seen everyone crying out for him to score more; now he is doing so despite missing a month through injury merely serves to show the folly of his omission from England’s disasterous South African misadventure. Luckily he is not tarred by that brush.

Other significant positives have been the markedly improved form of Lukasz Fabianski, capable of the odd mistake still but proof that Wenger’s belief in him was not misplaced. Had Mark Schwarzer arrived in the summer, we would not be so sure. A steady debut from Woijciech Szczesny was a positive from an otherwise disappointing performance at Old Trafford.

Defensively, Johan Djourou has been the best centre back with Laurent Koscielny showing promise, good performances marred by lapses in concentration. He is not the finished article but has been reliable for the most part. Squillaci has provided a steadying influence for both, his experience useful. Both the newcomers would score a 6 for their contributions so far.

Others need to find more consistency. Arshavin on Wednesday gave a typical performance; brilliant and anonymous in equal measure.

2010 is gone; harsh lessons have been handed out and need to be learned from. Key though is that 2011 arrives with a sense of optimism. The team is better placed than at any time since 2007/08 to launch a title challenge with a deeper squad than many, if not all, of their close rivals.  Here’s to a Happy New Year.

’til Tomorrow.

  7. I believe in ds present team and in Arsene,if d title is to be won, this team can do it,as fans we really should get behind d team and support them instead of predicting doom at every opportunity that presents itself.
I wish AFC a trophy filled year ahead.

  8. Thanks YW, although your post is very articulate and well reasoned, there are one or two things that must be said, an alternative take on the season so far, if you will. We still have flappy in goal, which is a concern. Coco hasn’t departed yet. We still have the love children, Diaby, Denilson and Eboue, who are a quartet who would fit nicely into a london taxi bound for Dover. We need a world class stopper, a DCM, a CM, a striker and a number 2. Pat Rice is no better than average. We have 2 billionaires waiting to take over the club, but we don’t have a pot to piss in. We can’t even hold on to the likes to Nordtveit, who had higher wage demands than we could afford. It is very depressing, but I will continue to support arsenal till I go to work, but until then I can’t close my eyes to what is going on at our club, which has been infested by players who are no better than what we had during the invincibles season. If we can all see it, then why can’t Wenger ?

  9. Stop Stop Stop Having a go at Arshavin.Check the facts. He is 2nd in the list of premiership assists. He creates more goals than any other Arsenal player. The other night he score a brilliant goal and made the 2nd goal yet because he didnt run 20 miles during the game he gets slagged of.

  10. I find it hard to believe that AW actually came out to say those words. It raises more questions than answers. Uncomfortable questions…
Why should these guys be losing focus in such an important game? Why on earth didnt we have good communication? What’s the point of training?
Why dont we have someone on the pitch to take charge? Isn-t it an indictment of wenger’s own selection and managerial skills?
It all makes even less sense when one recalls arsene has himself said in the past that it’s better to have many ‘leaders’ on the pitch instead of one vocal ‘captain fantastic’ type

  11. Great read. Nice to see some balanced opinion.

  12. Franklyn – that doesn’t alter the fact that Arshavin is inconsistent. His assists and goals are invaluable but his shortcomings affects the team also.

One of the difficulties with AA is that everyone knows that he is much better than he has shown thus far – we haver seen glimpses of the true potential but only in moments (the Liverpool game aside). He has admitted himself, on more than one occasion, that Arsenal have yet to see the true Arshavin – so clearly he is very aware of it too.

I don’t want to see him run 20 miles but I’d like to see some defensive work rather than just stopping and leaving it to others when he loses the ball.

He’s a great player but fans, commentators, neutrals and the player himself have all expressed criticisms of his mercurial nature – however much you love him and cite the stats as proof does not change the truths behind this perception.

  13. Very fair report (as ever).

I still think our biggest problem by far is still psychological. People will no doubt bang on about who we should sign in January, but what this team needs is real belief in themselves. There is so much pressure on the lads – from the fans and the media, but also from themselves – to end the barren run of trophies. They are desperate to prove that the manager’s faith in them is not misplaced that they end up playing ‘with the handbreak on’ as Wenger would put it.

Obviously the hope was that the Chelsea result would be the start of that belief. Let’s hope that Wigan haven’t dented that new found confidence too much. 2 good results from the next 2 difficult games would bring the confidence right back and put us in a great position…

  14. Henrisitc there in lies the problem..It would seem that Wenger is contradicting himself…Interesting podcast on arseblog this am re defense and Wengers attitude, pholosphy to defending etc…its well worth a listen- Amy Lawrence Observer Journalist….If its part or all correct in what she is intimating it comes as no surprise to me the continued defensive fraililties…

  15. Been a while…nice thorough write-up as always YW. It’s been a year of clearly positive transitioning. We definitely have a team that’s defining itself clearer by the game.

Who could have thought lil’ Jack would do what he’s doing so soon in this team?? He’s forcing Denilson to raise his game and keeping our other CM options “out-of-position” on the wings. Even Ramsey must now really step his game up to unsurp Jack. He’s my player of the year so far followed closely by Nasri & Song.

The whole team’s much clearer as to what it’ll take to be the best and for me more than anything it’s the clearest sign of great things to come.
If we maintain/improve our current vein of form we should win the Carling Cup & can win the EPL (or be runners-up). And if Fab, RVP, Diaby, Gibbs & Vermalen can get back to full fitness by the end of Jan..we can look forward to deep CL & FA cup runs as well.

As for the Wigan game, I feel AW needed to have introduced Walcott 5-10mins earlier to keep the Wigan RB’s focus more on defence than attack. Wigan tended to concentrate a main portion of their attack on whichever wing Arshavin was operating. 1st half they attacked Eboue & 2nd half Sagna. Arshavin’s defensive frailties become more glaring once he tires out, usually around the 65-minute mark. A fresh Walcott would have cut short that tactic and kept them on their defensive toes.

By and large, I am eagerly looking forward to a fruitful 2011.
After all, WE ARE THE ARSENAL!
    Well

  16. Can 2011 deliver,with wenger incharge,no chance.

  17. Can Stan say something relevant? No chance.

  18. Is FA Cup final played at Wembley? If so, we will go to Wembley 3 times in 2011. Carling Cup, FA cup and UEFA Champions League Cup.

  19. As someone said yesterday, mancs still have to play chavs twice and will come to Emirates to get spanked(hopefully).Wenger is correct ; this season has more twists and turns than you can imagine.Good write-up as always but no mention of the departures/new arrivals?
With Rambo and Vermaelen coming back and Gibbsy getting back to fitness ,I think we are well equipped to challenge on all fronts.
    What’s wrong with vela though?

  20. Wishing a great new year to all.
    Even the cunts(copyright steww)

  21. Stan,

Does Oliver think the same ?

    Enjoyable read as ever YW.

Jack Wilshere has been a revelation. We knew he had the talent but his consistency has been excellent. It`s asking an awful lot for him to continue this for another 5 months so others need to step forward.
As Diaby continues to be injury prone I think Denilson is going to be a vital player for us until the end of the season. Ramsey will be bit part if at all this season IMO as he regains fitness & confidence.

I think to get the best out of Arshavin a team has to use him as the fulcrum of attacking play & he won`t get that at Arsenal as we have so many options. When he`s not at his best it`s almost like playing with ten men & although he has some goals & assists you`d expect that playing where he does for us. That said if he finds some consistent form in the second half of the season he could make the difference.

    Over to you Arsene !

  22. Being an Arsenal fan right now is infuriating. Their victory over Chelsea was richly deserved and should have given them a real boost of confidence for the rest of the season.
In the next game they go to Wigan and draw. I know they made eight changes to the team but was their really a need for so many swaps? One thing for sure, fans will be asking serious questions of Arsene Wenger if he doesn’t deliver a trophy this season.
The Frenchman is under no pressure from the clubs shareholders and directors who believe he is a near perfect manager. Wenger’s masters degree in economics means he is adept at balancing the books and delivering a profit for Arsenal each year.
He fills the stadium most weeks and his team plays a superb style of football. Canny Arsene is also very shrewd at selling players at the right time and the right price for Arsenal.
For the people at the top at Arsenal winning trophies is secondary. It is a bonus to them. Running the club on a sound and viable football and financial footing is the main priority.
This mentality has manifested itself throughout the club and is responsible, in part, to the lack of trophies over the last five years. Take a look at the odds for Wenger to be still in charge of Arsenal on 31st December 2011, he is 1/16 with some bookmakers. It’s a joke!

  23. The usual suspects could doom and gloom upon the comments made after Pato’s header in the pre-season game.
Top level defences/defenders never make mistakes? In every game? Never suffer from a communication breakdown? Like John Terry, Captain, Leader, Legend during the England-Germany game? Like EVDS, Ferdinand or Vidic jumping in shock after Messi pops up to head a winning goal? Where are those tapes! Why do I have such a selective memory?

Last season, whilst the D**M merchants were d**ming, and my partial favourite player in the current squad was out injured, or out from a Kick, it seemed from the odd game that he played in that his ‘D-Fensive qualities’ had improved, last season, a lot. You couldn’t help but notice during games as he made his way back to form.
The other day, we hear him talking about ‘Team D-Fence’. And something called ‘pressing’, whatever that is, after he’d made two challenges/tackles that resulted in an assist and a goal. This must have all occurred, because they don’t coach Team D-Fence at AFC.

    Enjoy the new year ACLF.

  24. Happy new year to the whole aclf family.

  25. Good post.

  26. Muppet, your 11.03 was superb. If you can top that I will be surprised and even more amused.although your brief post as ‘Stan’ was more succinct in it’s approach to doomer parody.

Can I have a cider yet or is it a bit early?

  27. 1NilToTheArsenal

@Graham: I feel the same frustration. You have articulated several off-pitch issues with which I agree/disagree, but regardless of the circus of modern sport, it’s on field performance that really makes the difference. There was something particularly unsettling in the nature of the Wigan match. Following a memorable night against Chelsea (it’s still on my PVR and home I don’t keep going back to it in lieu of our upcoming fixtures), the lack of confidence and consistency is appalling. I’ve said it elsewhere and I say it here again: Genuine title contenders in any sport have an attitude and believe that serve to grind out results in the best and worst of times. In this year’s campaign no team exemplifies that better that the current edition of Fergie’s lot. No Renaldo, no Tevez, no Rooney yet despite his return, ostensibly mediocre form, but look who’s in first and is seriously mucking about with OUR record. They have yet to drop 3 points in a match despite their widely reported decline. If we can find an ounce of that steel, that verve and that belief we will trump all comers with the talent we have.
End of rant, n0w COME ON YOU GUNNERS!

  28. Supporting AFC in 2010 was fun and rewarding and sometimes frustrating as always. I agree with Henristic’s concerns in his post at 11:17 and I think this squad has the potential to be so much better then it has shown. However, it is what it is and all the complaining that he and I and everyone does will not change anything. This squad clearly has the quality to win all 3 trophies in PL so lets hope they can figure out how to organize themselves on the pitch and go on a long run of positive results and put all the inconsistency, criticism and negativity out to pasture where it belongs. Hope all gooners and AFC have a fabulous 2011.

  29. aah, where are my manners… I wish yogi and everyone a great new year. i’ve immensely enjoyed reading and commenting on your blog this year. Here’s hoping 2011 is the year where this team confirms arsene as the greatest manager in the PL

  30. Happy New Year, everyone!

  31. YW,

credit and criticism where it’s due – fair?

and I hardly ever use the term AKB, let alone call people retards, just to let you know ;)

praise: brave team selection against Wigan

criticism: lack of activity on the bench in the second half

    how’s that?

  32. Thanks for another excellent post to end the season Yogi. I’m not sure what’s going on with the site, but I’ve also experienced the odd difficulty locating the newest post the last couple of days.

I thought you made an interesting point @ 11.42am Albo, and one I’ve also mentioned before

“They are desperate to prove that the manager’s faith in them is not misplaced that they end up playing ‘with the handbreak on’ as Wenger would put it.

Obviously the hope was that the Chelsea result would be the start of that belief. ”

I think the Chelsea result would have made more of a difference had he been able to field more or less the same team. The 48 hour turn around made it impossible to do so. Arsene has to think about the rest of the season, not just the next game, given the number of players who had only recently returned from injury and our injury record over the last couple of seasons. Look at poor Diaby. I would not be surprised if his calf-strain was due to starting a game so soon after his substitute appearance on Monday. The players who started on Weds on the whole know they are not first choice and were no doubt inhibited in their desperation to live up to the exploits of Monday’s team and to work themselves into contention for more regular appearances. They just need to play more, which they will do with games coming thick and fast and their confidence will also grow, especially if there is more of a mix and match team out on the pitch rather than a first or second XI.

  33. Some criticism of the team at Wigan got a response from AW – blaming the players for a lack of communication. Who bought these players, who coaches them? Yes that’s right – AW and he is the one to blame. He is the one who constructed a squad with few if any natural leaders. We all feel bad enough about points dropped at relegation-fodder grounds without AW spouting this rubbish. He needs to look at himself for the problems and the solutions.

I then read his wods about City buying Dzeko and how much more of a threat this will make them. It seems that buying what is perceived as established quality can improve a frontline including Carlos Tevez but cannot improve us. More nonsense. Why don’t we try and get a player like him or even tried to buy Dzeko if AW rates him. Let me guess it will “kill” Bendtner. Quite frankly, who cares? Even paying players record wages will be better value than paying RvP’s wages to sit on the bench. What happened to the “we will buy a £30m player if AW thinks he’s worth it.” Complete and utter rubbish as I said on here years ago.

  34. AIC,

IMO, there was not a lot wrong with the first XI selection – had AW introduced Theo earlier, he would have a field day with the amount of space Wigan were leaving behind them throughout the second half…

even if he wouldn’t have scored, he would give the oppo something to think about!

sad thing is that he made the same mistake he did in the same fixture last season: too little, too late…

  35. Passenal,

“Look at poor Diaby. I would not be surprised if his calf-strain was due to starting a game so soon after his substitute appearance on Monday.”

Are you serious? The guy is 25 hasn’t played for months, comes on for a few minutes on a Monday and isn’t fit to start on a Wednesday. What a joke. Diaby is injury prone which is why he got injured again. Its hard to say if this is linked to the assault by Dan Smith but injury-prone players have held us back for too long. If Diaby and others can’t stay fit, whats the point of having them in the squad? Its tough enough to compete with other clubs without carrying dead weight as well. If Diaby can improve his fitness record and apply his huge talent better in games then he would be a great asset. Diaby has been at the club for 5 years now and there are scant signs of either.

  36. SUGA3

AW is awful at subs. When was the last time he changed a game from the bench (in our favour)?I can’t remember either.

  37. happy new year to u yogi all the best and keep up the great writing.

  38. AIC,

Bendtner scoring with his first touch against Sp*ds springs to mind…

  39. as well as Cesc against Villa – got injured in the process, but hey…

  40. SUGA3

Good call on Bendtner even if it was 3 years ago! We were well on top in that game though. Cesc v Villa also – good call. Over the years though there haven’t been that many.

  41. it really is a shame that Theo & Samir were not introduced around 60th minute, like we are seeing in plenty of games – we would have scored one more or at least kept them at bay that way…

  42. Maybe but we should have had enough to hold on for 10mins v 10 man Wigan no matter who was playing.

Its so frustrating after beating Chelsea to drop points like this, especially to a set-piece, yet again. We never learn or AW does not know how to solve this problem. Its blighted us for years.

  43. thing is that football is not exact science – on the paper, we had more than enough in our locker to beat the relegation fodder, but sometimes you need to change things, as your players are running out of ideas and/or out of steam…

  44. as for the set piece thing, I fully and wholeheartedly blame Fabianski for the equaliser…

  45. aic,

we were not on top when bendtner came on.
it was level. and the totts had scored first in that game and missed a penalty.

    short term memory I guess.

  46. Happy New Year YW and all the regulars. I had to skip the last few posts (except ttm) didn’t want to ruin what is left of 2010 by reading AIC’s normal shit.

  47. ttm,

We scored first, they equalised then we were all over them before the pen and then Nik scored.

  48. AIC, get used to the Frenchman as he’ll be around for a few more years.

  49. it will be interesting to see who will be his no.2 next season, as Rice is said to be gone…

hopefully someone with a pair to challenge him when needed…

  50. so we weren’t up when nik came on right?

    ..and done

  51. nik came on score = game changing sub….

you said you couldn’t remember the last time wenger had done that…

we reminded you…therefore your memory is short term.

  52. “Diaby is injury prone which is why he got injured again.”

That’s effing brilliant, AIC. Is he also prone to being kicked, which is why Robinson kicked him and put him out for 3 months? Is he also prone to having his ankles broken?

  53. Surprise, surprise AIC and Suga 3 posting their pointless bile in tandem once again.

  54. I don’t know Passenal. AIC makes Suga 3 seem reasonable. He at least shows evidence of actually watching and understanding the game.

I know, I know. It’s the New Year spirit.

  55. Well, that was unusual. A troll who wanted to impersonate me. Gosh, and they were sooooo funny.

Not any fucking more they aren’t and neither will anyone else be if they pull that little stunt again. Still, I’m not a vengeful person…

    YW

  56. Did I miss something Yogi?

    Who did what, when, where?

  57. Who could possibly immitate your garrulous prose, Yogi?

  58. I suppose someone who ‘over loquates’ Pz.

Still, it would take a very florid style to fool we regulars.

  59. Legs eleven. 2011. I have learned that legs are a good thing. Don’t take them for granted.

Happy New Year….by a country mile.

  60. Well that’s what I found so offensive with it all, Pz & Cbob. They were, without wishing to be derogatory, as thick as pig shit.

    YW

  61. Just read that Vela will go out on loan again… He will be so dissapointed, he will never want to come back…

  62. Well, that’s 2010 over for me here. I’m off to the pub.

A very Happy New Year to all our readers. Yes, really, all of them. Some really do need to cheer up.

    Whoop! Whoop!

  63. I thought that wasn’t you earlier YW – there have been some very strange posts on here lately!

Enjoy the pub Consolsbob – I think that seems like a good idea – leave misery to it’s own company.

Isaac, Vela has supposedly asked for a loan, I really hope it’s not a pre-cursor to a permanent move as I think he has the makings of a good finisher.

Hi Frank – hope to ‘e-see’ more of you in 2011.

Goodnight and Happy New Year to all ACLF readers, see you next year!

  64. Happy New Year to all the top folks on this site (you`ll know who you are)

    Roll on 2011 & destiny !

  65. Happy New Year to you all!
Great report, YW. It has been a great, great year to be a Gooner, here’s to another excellent one in 2011.
Where to start with highlights of the 2010 season so far? There are so many positives it is tough to single out a few for special mention. For me the emergence of Walcott and Nasri has been a joy to see. They are showing us what Wenger saw before anyone else. Wilshire, too, has really impressed. Cesc has shown his professionalism and the new trio has really been better than I expected. Overall what amazes me is the age of the team. They are so young it hurts. It is incredible that they perform at this level with so little experience and act so maturely at such a young age. I know what I was like when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I look around the league at the peer group for most of the Arsenal squad and I see a bunch of prima donnas getting in trouble and acting like they are king shit. It is refreshing to see how professional this Arsenal team is.
Wishes for 2011: be there with a chance to win a trophy, a healthy achilles for Vermaelen, an end to the injury worries for Diaby, Fabianski cementing himself as the #1, and the continued good form for the rest of the team.
Happy New Year to everone, I’ll be raising a glass to The Arsenal and all of you tonight for sure.

  66. Vela going out on loan would be good for him. Look at Welbeck, he’s thriving at Sunderland. Maybe Carlitos can go and join him over there. Bruce seems like he’s a good coach.

  67. You are a star, Passenal

  68. I agree with Frank.
Now where did I leave that bottle. HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL

  69. Happy New Year to all. Thanks for popping by with your contributions, large and small, all appreciated.

’til Tomorrow. No, wait, ’til Today.

    YW

  70. Happy New Year!!!

  71. Happy New year and a very prosperous one to you all

YW thanks for ur consistency in writing an excellent blog, even at times of disappointments. Your intelligence and balance and humour contributes to why i daily ensure i read even when work does not permit posting at times so dont let the iains of this world dissuade u otherwise!

Thanks for being consistent in producing excellence. our team will emulate you… they are gradually getting there. Soon they will be as consistent at producing what we have only seen glimpses of at times past years!

  72. I hope beckam goes to west ham for his loan… not spurs!

  73. yogi are we gonna have our dose of aclf today?
