Ready To Be Kings? Arsenal No Longer Pretenders To The Throne.

Arsenal 3 – 1 Chelsea

1 – 0 Song (44)
2 – 0 Fabregas (51)
3 – 0 Walcott (53)
3 – 1 Ivanovic (57)

The stygian skies which had gathered above The Emirates following the defeat at Old Trafford, were lifted with a performance which had long been demanded against title rivals. It was a victory which delivered a tocsin to those who have title pretensions.

Arsene rang the changes from that defeat. Ironically, on a night when Marouane Chamakh was not able to feast upon them, accurate crosses came from right and left flanks. Consistency of that delivery will bring rich rewards for the Moroccan in future matches. Wenger held the mortar as his charges became the pestle, Chelsea ground into dust by superior technique.

The visitors words beforehand were given a hollow ring from kick-off. The folly of their belief that physical superiority would bring the expected rewards was highlighted as Arsenal snapped into tackles, pressurised and harried to regain possession. Such was the diligence of the side’s work, Lukasz Fabianski was barely tested before an unassailable advantage had been forged.

Didier Drogba had been cast as Arsenal’s bĂȘte noire prior to kick-off but Johan Djourou was pugnacious in his handling of the Ivorian, restricting him to a shot wide early in the match. The Swiss international’s inclusion – entirely vindicated – was a surprise in the sense that Wenger has previously been cautious in such matches. His strength and aerial ability marked the youngster as an obvious choice in hindsight, his performance enhancing his burgeoning reputation as a first choice centre back of the future (and who is not to say the present?).

Midfield was the battleground where the match was won. Arsenal’s triumverate, enhanced by attackers and defenders, buzzed around Chelsea, forcing errors and firmly putting the visitors on the backfoot. Fabregas, Song and Wilshere tore into challenges, interceptions and were economical with their distribution, rarely wasting a pass.

Arsenal simply refused to be cowed, declined the opportunity to lay low. They stood toe-to-toe with their supposed physical superiors before they out-fought and out-thought them.

The stats after the game were telling; 277 passes in the oppositions half to Chelsea’s 126. It emphasised two things; Arsenal’s dominance and Chelsea’s descendence into a long-ball team, devoid of attacking ideas and ideology. Talk this morning of Ancelotti’s dismissal might be premature but casting a glance at the two benches highlighted the folly and short-termism of a multi-million pound spending spree with Uefa’s new regulations about to bite.

van Persie had Arsenal’s first opportunity, wafting at Song’s pass with Ivanovic’s boot flailing. The Dutchman was to have a tough evening, battered, shoved and tripped at will by the Chelsea defence, Mark Clattenburg reticent to issue cards for serial offenders. When he did, he glaringly got it wrong, Kalou incomprehensibly shown a yellow for a scything challenge on Clichy having tried DIY surgery on Koscielny previously. Who says officials are not swayed by reputations?

As the first half passed, Arsenal exerted more and eventually telling pressure on Chelsea. Cech clutched Nasri’s freekick, Drogba blocked Sagna’s effort, a rare occasion that the Ivorian effectively used his head last night. After Fabregas and van Persie had gone close as well, Cech rolled back the years with an outstanding save from Nasri’s almost perfectly improvised chip.

The deadlock was broken as the interval loomed. Song received the ball and immediately ploughed into the area, exchanging passes with Wilshere. Bundling into space as Fabregas was felled, the Cameroonian lifted the ball into the net with pace past Cech. It was no more than Arsenal deserved and the forewarning of a storm to come, one that would leave Chelsea rolling on the waves of Arsenal attacks. Malouda came close to parity before the whistle blew but the break gave a chance to regroup for the home side, to ensure calmness settled in their heads.

Half-time provided no haven of safety for the visitors. Before ten minutes of the second half had passed, the match was beyond reach. Chelsea were architects of their own despair, failing to heed the lessons of the first half and lax with their play. Arsenal capitalised.

van Persie’s pressure forced Essien into a loose pass, seized upon by Walcott who as Cech advanced, stumbled the ball sideways to Cesc, the Spaniard burying the chance with glee. Minutes later, Walcott prodded the ball away, feeding Fabregas, the return perfectly weighted into the England international’s path, the calmness of finish adding evidence to Walcott’s improvement this season.

Poor defending was not the sole preserve of the visitors. Koscielny allowed Ivanvic to get goal side of him and as Fabianski became stranded by indecision, the ball was looped over him into the net to give Chelsea hope. Whereas before Arsenal would have reeled, this time there was a marked professionalism in the way they broke the game when Chelsea had possession, took the sting from any attacking aspirations that their opponents may have had.

There were more opportunities to make the scoreline emphatic. Nasri should have lofted Cech in a manner similar to Pires at Villa Park to make the margin of victory destructive. Instead, to Arsene’s obvious disappointement, he lifted the ball gently into the goalkeeper’s grasp.

It was a superb performance in a fantastic atmosphere, one that begs the question as to why The Emirates cannot buzz like that more often. Late arrivals and early departees were noticeable by their absence – could it be that there were more supporters in the ground, a message to the club that they have an imbalance towards corporate funds? What price do the players put on such nights? Judging by their tweets, more than money can define.

The next eight days are crucial. With visits to Wigan and Birmingham before Manchester City arrive next Wednesday. It is crucial that last night’s victory is built upon, otherwise the erosion of insecurities will prove ephemeral. It is a demanding schedule but a glance at Arsenal’s players suggests that the squad are more than up to the task.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Chavs are sooo yesterday!

  2. An interesting – and unrelated – article. Nice to see Don Howe as a contributor to the word ‘assist’.

    http://www.optasports.com/about/news/feature-god-assist-me.html

  3. well well well

  4. A superb performance against a declining but physical Chelsea side. Great team selection by Wenger, picking an XI which worked as hard without the ball as they did with it.

With the monkey off our backs, let’s hope we can take this confidence-building performance and exploit it to the full – starting tomorrow night.

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2010/12/27/song-sets-the-tone-for-arsenal-in-emphatic-win-over-chelsea/

  5. could Arshavin play in the Cesc possition tomorrow? And let Thomas play on the left .

  6. Like I wrote on the arses, good pressing, good movement, and not least, the taking of chances (though e.g. Diaby may have done a bit better with his). These were the areas where we looked most improved yesterday. AND, Song added a bit of discipline to his new roaming style, which helped A LOT. We lost a bit of shape and momentum after Theo went off, I thought, and weren’t wholly convincing at the back at times, ‘though Djou played well.

Great result. Here’s hoping they can keep it up against Wigan awat, too.

  7. Eh, away, is what I meant.

  8. Great result, let’s hope we use it as a springboard to push on. Chelsea were appalling, Wimbledon-esque route one football – I wonder what the odds are for them to fail to qualify for the Champion’s League….??

  9. Just read a stat that says Johan has oly played three games against the Chavs. Of those his won two and drew the other.

Boy did good yesterday, he tamed the beast, so much so it felt like we were watching Johan and his house pet out there! Good times.

  10. There is only on SONNGGGG !!!

  11. I also felt that Nasri was excellent yesterday, he played very intelligently yesterday.Especially in the second half when we were leading, I only noticed it when I watched the game again. He really took one for the team.

  12. Just one other think on their goal I don’t think it was a mistake my Kozzer, it was a damn good cross. If anything blame that high line we have love to play even on set pieces, amongst all our players in the box, only Kocienly made any attempt to cover the space that Ivanovic took advantage off.

  13. Interesting statistic.

Before this year, Arsenal has been 2nd on the league table at the turn of the year 7 times. We have won the league 6 out of those 7 times.

    Is this the 8th?

Also, can we now stop talking of potential for some players. Alexandra Dimitri is here and is in my view the most in form and the most talented defensive midfielder in the league. Essien looks tired and spent – Obi Mikel couldn’t buy a goal if his life depended on it.

Not that Arsenal gives a damn about defensive midfielders who are attack minded, or attacking midfielders with defensive nous. Song, Li’l Jack Willy and Cesc all attacked and defended superbly in equal measure.

If we are to be anal – Cesc, Diaby, Song, Denilson, Wilshere and Ramsey can all atack and defend with skill and competence rendering the so called “sitting” (as if they sit) position of defensive midfield an old cliche.

Now that we’ve tested all available combinations in central defence – I would really like to see how Djourou and Vermaelen can play together – FA cup maybe?

And thank you so so much to the crowd at the Emirates for doing the simple task of ‘supporting’ the team. You folks were amazing last night.

  14. Johan is the king of Defense.
Song, ones disciplined is a huge asset.
Wilshere with time will boss the center. He does more harrying than Denilson whose stregnth is the velvet one two passes.
Fab, what can i say, even when he is not at his best, he still has those laser guided passes.
How we needed VP. he made Chelsea defense to work for all the balls. I want to see him play with Chamack though. Solid game.

  15. Great result- but struggle with your writing sometimes I am afraid. Your vernacular is over indulged and whilst I enjoy a good read, I do sometimes feel you over loquate just to appear clever. You are clearly well educated but need to realise that the key to good reportage is in fact accessability and clean descriptive prose – not a garrulous ramble.

  16. Of course Darius there are still games to be played this year, so…

Clattenberg had a poor game for a good referee. Before Song scored and Cesc was hacked to the ground, he was kicked from behind by three Chelsea players as the ‘attempted’ to tackle him. I lost count of the free kicks given to the chavs in dangerous areas whereas we were often waved on to no obvious advantage. You are right about Kalou as well Yogi, I was screaming at consolslel that he should have been booked for the first challenge as he was obviously going to kick someone else later. He did.

Very dirty team, the chavs. They couldn’t match us at p[laying football.

We just need to keep winning. Playing like that will bring the Title but we have to do it again and again and..

  17. Big relief to get this ‘can’t beat a big team’ monkey off our back.
Unless chelsea isn’t really a big team anymore.. haha, good times…

Now to the hard part, beating wigan and showing some consistency.

    Happy holidays people!

  18. thats you told

  19. Men against Old Men.

Our boys have come of age.

  20. Djourou was IMMENCE and can have done his cause (of being our first choice centre half) no harm at all,

Days like these are to be savoured like a fine wine

  21. Agree Darius.. The stadium was rocking yesterday.. Hope this continues throughout this seasons and the ones after. And if anyone still doesn’t think that the crowd can have an effect on the players, I don’t what would…

I, personally, am not for the TV5 / Djourou partnership. It would be like the Gallas / Kolo partnership we’d..
    The combinations I favour are: TV5 – Squilly, TV5 – Kos6, Djourou – Squilly and Djourou – Kos6. I think we don’t play as well when we’ve Squilly – Kos6 and I think the same with TV5 – Djourou..

  22. Bradys right foot

Great performances from all round the pitch and great result, hopefully we can back it tommorrow. Credit to Wenger he made some big calls last night. Special mention to big Johann a monster performance.

  23. Did anyone understand what that Iian said? What a retard, criticising Yogi for over elaborating then using words like ‘garrulous’ what a tosser!

  24. Personally Yogi, I love your vernacular.

Marvllous team performance last night. It would be unfair to pick anyone out. Oh, OK Alex Song – awesome all round display.

    A word on Chelsea. Finished

  25. We should’ve played with that line up against Man Utd, loved the positive vibe surrounding the starting XI last night.

Chelsea thought they would, like always, sit back, endure some light pressure then go on to score a few in quick succession. Instead, they struggled to endure heavy pressure and conceded in quick succession!! Loving every moment of this, as we all are..Now bring on Wigan!

  26. Iain

Garrulous? There is nothing trivial in the subject matter of handing out a twatting to Chelsea. Was that clean and descriptive enough?

    YW

  27. Maria

Alas the electronic pages do not necessarily convey the dry humour of one’s critics. He brought a smile to my face anyway. Quite forgotten the word ‘garrulous’ before this morning.

    YW

  28. Zap

It was not necessarily the line-up we needed against United, it was however the level of performance. Any Arsenal side which had put that performance together at Old Trafford, would have won. Players such as RvP, Walcott, Song and Fabregas have seen their recent outings criticised. Djourou is trying to gain a first team place. Individually, they had points to prove. Collectively, the squad had a point to prove.

The case is not yet made conclusively but using this is as the basis for a long unbeaten run would be a good starting point.

    YW

  29. I always thought Yogi throws in one or two words just to keep us on our toes. I quite enjoy that.

So about the game, it was one of the best Christmas gifts any Arsenal fan could hope for.

  30. I love your writing style Yogi. There’s nothing wrong with sounding educated! And Maria – that is by far my favourite comment of the day!

  31. Does anyone else think it’s strange to have 2 games in two nights? A bit hard for the players, even if their fitness is immense it will be interesting to see the changes Wenger makes.

  32. Zap,

it usually takes about 72hours or 3 days for players to be fully ready for the next game. That is why there is usually a gap of 3 days between games for each team even in the WC..

I wished we could atleast play on thursday..

  33. Me thinks they’ll be big changes for tomorrows match. Thank God for our solid bench. The same can’t be said for Chelsea.

  34. This schedule is pretty insane-having a game in two days? Luckily we have the squad to rotate and can play Chamakh, Bendtner, Arshavin, Denilson, Rosicky, Diaby, Squillaci and Eboue. But there is not real option but to play Kos and Clichy right now.

Flying after that pasting of Chelsea! I loved seeing us close down and harass Chelski. Djourou is a rock and Song was absolutely immense; and Wenger made inspired choices for this lineup. Arshavin can fight for his place by playing more centrally v. Wigan. They thought they could bully us but we were supreme in the tackle and had our usual level of possession. The difference is we took our chances. If we had scored the first goal at Stamford Bridge, we would have turned them over then too. We are on our way if we can win the ManCity game and the two fixtures before it. Brum away is never easy and playing Wigan tomorrow, as I said, is craziness.

Fabregas was humorous with his remarks after the game about how no other national league would have them playing in two days–he looked very upbeat and encouraged and it definitely on his way back to his best in the coming weeks.

  35. Actually I rather liked the irony in this sentence.

“Your vernacular is over indulged and whilst I enjoy a good read, I do sometimes feel you over loquate just to appear clever.”

Very funny, especially the use of that every day word ‘loquate’.

  36. Is this the begining of the march towards a league title we have waited 5 seasons for?

  37. There are few things as unforgivable as gloating.

So how come Arsenal can never beat these big-spending teams?

And how can they possibly stay in contention without lavishing funds on an elderly goalkeeper, a large lumbering centre-back and a crude defensive hard-man?

And how will Theo ever find aeons of time and acres of space to lay on a sitter for Cesc and score another himself when he’s pitted against such a highly prized (and priced) left back? Imagine what he could achieve if he had a footballing brain.

    Pray, forgive me.

  38. Maria/Yogi

Anybody called Iian spelling their name that way i would suggest has bigger issues than grammer!

    Stunning,just stunning last night.

  39. Flint McCullough

Bit rich, Iain, particularly as you have a rather unnecessary extra “i” in your name.

YW delivers what the more talented members of the press used to do, in the days long before their reports were just quotes from the managers. That is a vivid description of the game, embellished with smart arse phrases that we wish we could of thought of ourselves but never will. YW has a gift that I for 1 fully appreciate.

    2 observations from the game

    i. We got a result when, for the 1st time in years, we had almost all our most influential players available in one of these “big” games.

ii. More importantly the team learnt to work & work fully & concentrate as a team for the whole 90 mins.

It was like a lesson has finally been learnt. If it remains learnt, for every single game, then we have a real chance. If not this result will be just a tease leading to yet more unfulfilled expectations.

  40. Chelsea are finished. I admit, though, that I exaggerated a touch when I said they have the worst form in the league. They are in fact the second worst. Fulham are the worst, with 4 points from their last 8 matches. Chelsea have 6 points from the same number of games. We’ll meet more worthy opponents tomorrow. Wigan have 9 points from 8. We have the second best form in the league: 18 points from 8 matches.

I’m not convinced Chelsea are just suffering a dip in form. We have been predicting their end for a couple of seasons now. The surprising fact is that they have gone from Champions to Chumps so suddenly, when one would expect a gradual decline. I suppose it’s like those men who are said to turn grey overnight.

  41. @Consols – LOL – truly, the irony.

As famously said, I personally don’t like using big words lest I get inebriated in the exuberance of my own verbosity.

So I’ll just stick to YW’s skills as a wordsmith.

  42. The whole match belonged to Arsenal, every single player, and the great 12th man. It proved modern football is not a game for old men.

  43. I thought Iain’s comment was hilarious, but such is my sense of humour.

Last night’s game meant everything and nothing, but by god I’ll treasure the memory for a long long time. The roaring I put down (alas from the comforts of Camberwell) was epic, blood-curdling, guttural, and definitely a throwback to some berserker ancestor.

Crudely but frankly put, that victory ranks equal to great sex.

  44. Outstanding post. Best i’ve read today. You could feel the ‘buzz’ coming out of every sentence. Agree 100%.

  45. Nice analysis and an enjoyable read IMHO.

My tupenny worth as a fan who knows not a lot goes like this.

    1. Djourou’s selection made big difference for me. Not only is he a more talented player that Squillaci but, rather strangely given the difference in experience, he also appears to be a lot calmer under pressure. The way he handled Drogba was probably one of the most delightful things about the night. I think a Djourou/ Vermaelen CB pairing has all the makings of a legendary partnership… not least because of the Left foot/ Right foot balance that that combo will bring to the heart of our defence
    2. The resting of Arshavin was another key decision. When Arshavin is not contributing in an attacking sense then he is often not contributing much and in games like the ones against Chelsea and ManU where you know that it will be tactically locked, as Wenger usually puts it, you need everyone to put a shift in. it is no coincidence that Clichy had one of his best games for us this season last night.
    3. Walcott made such a difference. To be fair Walcott has run Ashley Cole ragged a few times before even though we ended up losing the matches. I recall the FA Cup semi and also a loss at the Grove 2 seasons ago in a match where Nasri played as a DM and Anelka opened the scoring for Chelsea. But last night was a great performance from Walcott as he kept Cole constantly on the back foot.
    4. We finally managed to get something resembling our best team out on the pitch for a big game. It is easy to overlook the fact that we very rarely have even a majority of our key players fit for key matches. It is a testament to our squad depth that not only are we in touch with the leaders but we really ought to be leading ourselves.

All in all it was last night was great for us Arsenal fans and hopefully it is the beginning of the greatness we’ve all waited for for so long and a just vindication for a decent, honourable, intelligent and visionary man like Arsene Wenger. The abuse that man has had from some Arsenal fans on some Arsenal sites has to be a classic study in human stupidity.. I leave it at that. I’d just like to add that the wait wouldn’t have been anywhere near as long but for the loss of both Flamini and Hleb from the team that really challenged in the 2007/08 season. The loss of Flamini for no fee set us back quite a bit as we couldn’t replace him… Onwards and upwards

  46. 11.15 am – Oh dear. Where to begin?

I’ll go easy on you Iain, as I’m sure you’re a nice chap really but, as a rule of thumb, it’s perhaps best to clean your own prose before criticising that of others. Loquate? LOQUATE? It’s not even a fucking word!

Or, if it is, I could not loquate it. [sic]

I assume you meant that YW is loquacious (a dastardly and shameful quality if e’er there was one) . Given that loquacious means ‘to talk excessively’ you have, in any case, used the wrong word entirely. I am pretty sure you meant that YW is prone to indulging in the use of flowery language, as opposed to him just ‘banging on’ a bit?

Furthermore, as loquacious already means to do something to excess, the use of the word ‘over’ is redundant and incorrect. This is a common mistake, similar to ‘over-exaggerate’ except instead of the word exaggerate you used a ‘made-up’ word like spantangulate. (It’s not a word but it should be).

This a mistake that you replicate, to an extent, in the same bleedin’ sentence with use of the words ‘over indulge’. It would have been better English to say YW is indulgent with his vernacular. Certainly the use of ‘over’ in the same sentence (with the omission of a hyphen) which would have been more correct, is rather poor grammatically. You should get over ‘over’. Over?

Finally, on a morning when you should be stroking your own skin with excitement, you have chosen to waste time pissing on someone else’s cornflakes for having the temerity to write well, with a broad command of English, in a style of his own suiting, on a blog that he writes for free, taking up incalculable hours of his life for the pleasure of other like-minded souls the day after we stuffed those inbred bastard chavs 3-1?

You’re right. What an over-indulgent cunt. (note use of hyphen)

Yogi – I hope this inspires you to even greater levels of loquate [sic]. I love the breadth and majesty of this English language. It is no crime to use it well. I heard the word asseverate for the first time on this blog and it isn’t often someone teaches me a new word.

    Oh and garrulous????

    Foxtrot Overcoat.

In closing, to paraphrase a better writer than I (and certainly than you).

Iain , I offer you my most enthusiastic contrafribularities. I’m anispeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous if I have caused you any pericombobulation.

Back to the football we were ace but weren’t Chelsea woeful?

Thought Song was unlucky for MOTM but everyone dug in well yesterday.

    MORE PLEASE.

  47. Darn I was so busy polishing that, Consolbob nipped in first on loquate! :0)

    I mean, honestly!

  48. Yogi….Chelsea were “rolling on the waves of Arsenal attacks” That was as clean as it gets. It was indeed a night to behold! Even Diaby got into the fray. As for the yellow card of Fabregas, and as the match commentator mentioned, it may be a blessing to be able to give Cesc another match to rest. But, what a game. Young Jack was snapping at Chelsea heels all night long. He does have a mean streak!

  51. Yogi, I can assure you that the use of the word garrulous as a critical comment on your writing has no place in my understanding. My experience with that word, when I was working, was to describe a patient who was talking excessively with a degree of pressure to his speech. Of course none of this has any place as a criticism of your writing. You write very well. Damn to these cowards who shoot from the bushes and who melt into the night unseen.

  52. iain | December 28, 2010 at 11:15 am |

How dare you question Yogi’s writing!

  53. Maria | December 28, 2010 at 11:27 am |

He was taking the piss, darling.

  54. @ merlot – great post. I forgive you, if that works for you!

    @ joshua – agree entirely.
    ******
This result recalls for me the away victory against AC Milan a few seasons ago when the Cesc/Flamini/Rosicky/Hleb midfield came of age. A superb team performance. All credit to them for finding the courage and confidence to play like the Arsenal after the defeat to ManUre. Clearly we don’t need more, or different, players. Barring the half-dozen or so world-beaters (who are in any case not available), there are not better players around. This squad is good enough to win the league and last night they looked as if they believed it.

  55. Actually, I say Cesc/Flamini/Rosicky/Hleb, but I am now doubting my memory of who started! Anyway, another great team performance in which everyone did his job.

  56. Is yesterday’s victory enough to silence the doubting Thomases? Even some of us regulars on ACLF after the defeat at ManU had begun to lose our objectivity in a sea of emotional despair. A significant victory was scored by the Arsenal in that game as Slur Alex, playing at home of all places, set-up his team as if he was MacCarthey at Wolves by not playing his on-form striker (Berbatov) and packing the midfield with five in the hope of hitting us on the counter. (The type of tactics Bill is in love with.) Talk about playing like a little team. Same tactics were adopted by Chelsea and it failed comprehensively. As Ole Gunner, and a few others have stressed, Arsenal is a much superior team when we can call on our best players. Without Van Persie and Fabregas, together with some of our big guns, we lack the edge which is critical in big games. Last night proved it decisively.
My only hope is we don’t go OTT like those shitty bloggers. Last week they were calling for big spending and wanting to sack Wenger. Now they are behaving as if we are already champions of the PL championship; we are leading the procession with the crown waitng for us at the end. One game at a time, one game at atime.

  57. shotta,
me too… One game at a time..

I’m hoping to see lot of changes for the Wigan game… Many of the players were exhausted by the end yesterday and I’m not whether they would recover fully for 2moro..

  58. Shotta: a voice of reason, as usual.

    Well said mate.

  59. I finished off a bottle of Argentine wine, of which, I have come to enjoy with a degree of enthusiasm. It was a cabernet sauvignon and I became just a little tipsy. When I looked into the mirror, in a vain attempt to freshen up, the reflection was gloating. By jove I was gloating after that hiding we handed out to Chelsea. And I was cheered by the comment of the announcer when he chided Ashley Cole for the way he treated Arsenal when he left. What a lout that young man turned out to be and Theo gave him such a troubled time during the match much to my gloating satisfaction. I apologize for any appearance of excessive gloating on my part but it was wonderful was it not?

  60. A brilliant atmosphere at the ground yesterday. Helped by the holiday season too? People not arriving late, or rushing off. I’m glad the game wasn’t snowed off.
    -
The excessive cards being given by the referees in Arsenal games this season covered in other blogs, could on occasion be an advantage.
    -
Who needs a Gr*kicker when you can reduce the crumbling Chav$ to fight amongst themselves?
T’was only a few weeks ago that some Arsenal fans wrote upon ACLF of Ca$hley, the world’s best LB (even Better Then Baal tm). Joy.

We knew that they are hoof-ball merchants on the wane. But there might be some value for less experienced players like Walcott who played well in that close CC final, from yesterdays result. Diaby too. A blind and speculative stab here, but that might be why he went on yesterday. As well as the obvious height thing.

  61. >Gr*t-kicker.

  62. bring on barca!

  63. Huge game yesterday. Shotta and Henristic are right, now comes the difficult part of playing consistently. The fact that we have a very deep squad that is collectively healthier then any manager could ever hope for is a huge advantage for us going into this crowded set of fixtures. Defense was very good yesterday. Djourou was superb. Fabianski had very little to do. Wish we could have kept the clean sheet but thats about the only thing we did wrong. Theo was also fantastic. I had hoped he would start on the bench as an impact sub but he certainly showed he deserved to start yesterday.

I think this group of players for Chelsea has decided to take their trophy case with them to a beach somewhere in Australia and mail in the season. They showed signs of complacency last year but this is hard to imagine. Perhaps there is some pride left (hopefully against the Manc’s and City) and they will make some sort of recovery but age and indifference has caught up much faster then I would have thought. They will not make the top 4 at this rate.

  64. Poliziano at 12:36. What do we call that a “West London Nightmare?” Interesting that both teams are run by individual fiat!

  65. Shotta…

You make a very excellent point vis-ĂĄ-vis the loss at OT.
First of all we were the away team and even our best sides have rarely scored more than once away to United. Don’t ask me why that is as it just seems one of those odd statistical quirks that really can’t be explained .
Secondly, whilst we didn’t play that well, or as well as we all know we can, we weren’t exactly dire either. It is a measure of the craziness of football reporting and punditry that the loss at OT was spun the way it was and that a lot of folks accepted the spin as valid.
Finally… I think that you are right about going OTT after the win against Chelsea but I’d say that it’d be even worse to pretend that all we beat last night was an ageing and direction-less team. Here’s a prediction for you… I think that Chelsea are going to go on a run that will take them right back into contention. THEY ARE NOT OUT OF IT. They are not anywhere near as poor a side as they are now being made out to be… remember that their last match was away to Tottenham, the newest media darlings, and they really ought to have won. WE MADE THEM LOOK POOR, it is our quality that made them look so abject. Does that mean that we have the EPL sewn up? Absolutely not. What it does mean though is that we are genuine challengers… and in IMHO the team best equipped to win it.

The Barcelona match is now the next big hurdle I see for this team and that is not to dismiss anyone else that we have yet to play, but the next big mental hurdle is playing Barcelona home and away. It’s a pity that Sagna would be missing for the first leg but we can really do something this season if win that match. It will depend on fitness and form obviously since the match is still a fair few months away but I truly believe that this team of ours is very, very good. Utimately though they are going to have to deliver no matter what I or anyone else says..

Shotta’s comment reminded me of your response to my comment about your recent post calling for AW to spend more money on more experienced players.
You said that a) you were not calling for us to overspend in the hope of recouping through success, and b) that it was undeniable that Wenger had money in the bank. To take a) first – I still question the assumption that spending more = trophy, but leaving that to one side, I was talking about wasting money, not about spending beyond our means. If we cannot get better players (and in practice, we can’t) and we do not need greater numbers (we do not, as we already have a big squad) then adding to the squad with players who are not better is simply disruption and spending for no good reason. This is a waste of money. Similarly with replacing current players with players who are no better – disruption for no good reason. Whether we can afford it or not, not wasting money is always better than wasting money, surely?
On b) – I was not denying that we have money in the bank. I was applauding Wenger for not wasting it on something we do not need.
Also, I recall that last year you would rightly rubbish arguments similar to the one you made in that post. If it was a specious argument a year ago, it doesn’t start making sense just because a year has gone by and you are that bit more desperate for a trophy.

  67. Well, I may have been quicj but you were comprehensive jonny.

Tautological was, perhaps, a word that you might have used.

Fair points shotta but we were poor at OT. I’ll go along with one game at a time though.

    Consistency. There’s another good word.

  68. Just a quick comment about George Graham’s contribution in the lead up to the game. In his interview with “Talksport”, which I have to concede I didn’t and haven’t heard, he says and I quote…

……”I think that Arsenal should have [reinforced the defensive positions] a few years ago,” Graham said. “The time to buy players is when you’re up there challenging for the Premiership.

“Last season they were challenging right to the last four or five weeks of the season so even though they’ve been building teams each season they’ve never been out of the top four

“But I still think that if [Wenger] had gone out and brought two or three big players each year they would have won a lot more than they have done over the last five seasons.”…….

What I find fascinating about GG’s comments is that he assumes that Wenger was in a position to sign two or three top players each season for the past 5 seasons… and the journalists who were presumably doing this interview also took it for granted that the cash was there and only Wenger’s parsimony stopped Arsenal from spending. Well here’s David Dein in 2008 commenting on the financial position of the club. Now I know that Dein had his own agenda but I donubt that he come out and lie as an exposure of him lying would harm him and his credibility. here’s his quote from the Mail newspaper….

The north Londoners’ financial clout has been called into question this summer following the departure of Mathieu Flamini to AC Milan – with wages allegedly a major factor in his exit – while key players Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor also look odds-on to leave.
Dein claims the recent upheaval could be a sign of things to come unless the Gunners board entertain a takeover from a super-rich investor, and insists it is the only way manager Arsene Wenger can be given the opportunity to succeed.
‘Luckily, they have Arsene but you have to give the man a chance,’ Dein said. ‘I don’t want to see Arsenal as the second or even third team in London.
‘I can see the way the game is going. The wealthier are going to get wealthier and more successful. It is getting polarised.’
Of Usmanov, he added: ‘He would change the whole dynamic of the club. At Arsenal, something has to break.’

    Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1030112/Former-Arsenal-chairman-warns-board-sell-Usmanov-left-behind.html#ixzz19Q57w2IT

My point is that I’m not sure that Wenger could have bought 2 or 3 big players even if he wanted to so do.

  69. Thanks Fungunner.

    Fellow Gooners and Goonerettes,
Reading the blogs this morning the consensus from the worldwide fan base is one of joyous relief!
That since 2005, this group is not just an idea in Wenger’s head but a team that can actually fulfill their potential as they did so well last night (finally). Here’s a word that isn’t used very often in connection with our club: ruthless! For me that is the best way to describe the much of our possession. The partnership of Theo and Cesc was fabulous and we purred with silky menace for large parts of the game.
Defensively we remain velunerable as we became quite nervous immediately after Ivanovic’s header, but we steeled ourselves as any good title challenger should do and continued to threaten even in the final minutes.
Great stuff, truly, and despite whatever happens against Wigan (another notch in the 2010 belt for us I’m hoping), something to savour right into 2011, when we will have many more dragons to slay. Until then, Happy holidays from Canada

  71. I guess GG knows all there is to know about bunging players.

  72. something that went unnoticed yesterday from Van persie. he won so many balls with his head from corners and open play in the middle. i think he worked on them or something as i never remembered him doing so before

  73. joshua | December 28, 2010 at 2:48 pm |
    - Fair points overall especially the need to take some joy for our defeat of the chavs. No doubt many will say they are old and slow but less than one week ago those plundits and bloggers were agreeing with that sage, Nani, that the title was a two horse race between his team ManU and Chelsea. What a difference a week makes in football.
    - One other observation (something I posted during the game), this is the same Chelsea that three weeks ago literally pounded the Totts into submission, especially in the 2nd half, afterthey fell behind and almost won the game until Drogba choked on his penalty. They tried to to kick us yesterday but we were too strong, too fast and too skillful for them.

  74. The voice is slowly returning, the grin hasn’t faded since the first goal went in and my head is very, very sore. Christmas came two days late.

The boys did us proud and showed me exactly why its important to keep the faith because when they pull out a performance like that in front of a largely loyal and passionate crowd, it really feels close to orgasmic.

Or maybe i’m not doing it right. Never the less, that was epic.

  75. Jonny,
“Iain , I offer you my most enthusiastic contrafribularities. I’m anispeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous if I have caused you any pericombobulation. ”

that quote from Blackadder almost destroyed my spell checker.

Great result last night and just a few more wickets away from retaining the Ashes. Lovely stuff.

The point I made in the post http://aculturedleftfoot.wordpress.com/2010/12/21/is-arsene-managing-his-shopping-bill/ you refer to was that spending ÂŁ150m does not guarantee winning a trophy. I never said that I supported the view expounded by others that we need to have a touch of the Viv Nicholson’s and I would point the Right Honourable Reader to the final paragraph of the post where my view on the issue is, I think, crystal clear.

Unless of course, I have obfuscated the matter, in which case I am losing my perspicacity. Or my mind.

    YW

  79. As a non-native speaker of English (although I do have a teaching degree in it) I would like to express my appreciation of Yogi’s use of the English language, so flowing, so inspiring, so near-poetic. Just like Arsenal’s football at its best. Take a passage like this:

“Midfield was the battleground where the match was won. “

  80. Shotta @ 2:48

Absolutely correct on the way Chelsea played in the second half against Tottenham. And remember that Harry’s boys are not only the most exciting team in the world but real challengers too according to the same pundits who now tell us that we only beat a declining and aged Chelsea, what about that second half against Spurs then? All talk prior to kick off was of a Chelsea revived… by their second half performance against Tottenham and the 2 week break they’d had. Now they are supposedly a spent force? The truth is that Chelsea were never as nailed on to win the EPL as the commentators and pundits made out… and with the exception of Cavarlho I really don’t think that they are missing the people they shifted out like Cole, Deco, Ballack and Belletti. Those guys were shifted out for a reason, they simply weren’t doing it… and Abrahmovic must thanking his stars that he did not agree to Joe Cole’s 120K a week demand! Chelsea are not as bad as people are saying now nor were they as good as people made out previously. That’s what I think is the truth. But what do I know…

  81. Looks like wins for man city and spurs today. Let’s all hope the Birmingham can pull out a point against the mancs. Strange year. Earlier myself and many others wrote off the mancs because they had stopped defending and thought the chavs would be the favorites. How quickly things can change.

  82. On French TV, Arsene Wenger mentionned that for the first time they decided to change tactics. He did not wanted them to be previsible and open. So they pressed higher and stayed compact.
The decision to drop Arshavin made a big difference to the overall worth ethic of the team. Everybody defended, chased, harried. No passager a la Arshavin.
Also Djourou and Koscielny really handled Drogba by always trying to get the ball or stop him controlling it. With the midfield players fighting for the knock down and second ball Chelsea was overwhelmed.

Those two changes and the better worth ethic are the reasons why the game did not have the same result than at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, the big elephant in the room that nobody want to comment is ‘Is this a decline or a blip for Chelsea?’.
Personally I think that the new Financial Fair Play rule and the waning interest of Abramovich means that Chelsea’s squad is not only ageing but also short in quality cover.
For the first time in a very long time, the comparison between Chelsea’s bench and Arsenal’s bench were in favour of Arsenal.
With our noisy north London neighbour building a new big stadium, I can see Chelsea struggling to qualify for the champion’s league in the future.
Chelsea needs a central defender (Alex being injured and Terry getting old), a right wide midfield (tricky dribbler or speedy winger) and a big striker who can hold the ball upfront. They looked ponderous and one pace.
They have a lot of very powerful players but nobody with explosive pace. Will they have the funds and the time to rebuild that team?

  83. I love how the Chel$ks resorted to LONG LONG balls from their goal keeper.

  84. Getting there, YW

  85. With all this talk about Djourou being awesome last night some have forgotten about the great game our French novice, Koscielny, had yesterday.

  86. Chelsea 2010-11 remind me of Liverpool 1990-91. A strong team suddenly looking very old.

  87. I love how the crowd laughed (at 3-0 of course!) at those ‘Route One’ hoofs.

What a beautiful team goal ending with the finish from Song. The gradual shift in tempo, the build up, with Song always at the heart.
    I embrace Arsenal’s D**M.

In truth, I don’t care what the midfield composition is, they’re all good. I’d like to see Denilson and Wilshere again sometime soon. I just have an addiction to pure, unrefined pace (blame Overmars), hence the desire to see Walcott and Nasri start.

Lennon attempted a trademark Walcott finish today, he missed.
I wonder how many goals and assists (the X button type, no rebounds.) Walcott has from the same position on the pitch in or around the right hand side of pelanty area/box against ‘big’ teams in ‘big’ games. A few.
    -
Chel$ki need a lumbering stopper of a centre back, an orthodox right old whinger, and a big old gr*t clogger up front, like Shearer after his last op?

    Interesting.

  88. love you all.

The line up and bench was devastating yesterday. The performance matched them. Beautiful technique, contagious desire and calmness in adversity. Quality everywhere.

No-one will fancy us playing like that. I think Ashburton Grove just gained a few “fortress” points.

    I am so very happy.

  89. I was really impressed by RVP last night. His shooting boots are not yet in full working order, but his hold up play was outstanding. He also seems to have worked on his heading as he won a lot of balls from goal kicks and was often in the right place to support the team defensively from chelski corner kicks. The other thing of note was that Fabianski did not have one save to make all game. It’s just a shame he conceded from that one set piece.

  90. Pass,

Me too. RVP really was the first line of defence. Did you see him talking tactics with Arsene in the bench? I smell another future coach!

  91. i agree Passenel – RVP did a top job as the centre forward – hes got more about him than Chamakh (who has been great so far) – RVP is just a step up in quality.

  92. Wanted to mention the job Sagna did on both Malouda and Cashley, his the only defender we have that I am never worried about when the ball is in his side of the field. Yet, another superb performance from him. One word to describe him composed!

  93. It should also be noted that RVP did a lot of work in organising the team. It could even be seen on the TV that when Chelsea had the ball he gave orders to his team mates to stay in line. Great man.

  94. What a lovely day…

  95. Song got the balance of attack/defend spot on in that game to0 – great busy performance

  96. Yes Maria, I saw that on the replay I watched this morning. I could just picture him as a future Arsenal coach!

  97. Id be happy with a Robin ‘no serious injuries for the rest of his Arsenal playing days’ Van Persie – sod the coaching badges :)

  98. Pass

I’d just like to picture him as a fully fit, functioning centre forward for Arsenal…!

    YW

  99. Also did everyone see Titi on SS before the game? What a gentleman, and still as articulate and passionate as ever. Said again that he was a Gooner, mentioned the years we used to school the Chavs then went on to predict a win for us. He was a tad conservative though 2-1!

    Love me some Titi!

  100. Oh and did anyone else notice Giberto in the dug-out right next to the other
lads? Great to see legends making their way home.

  101. Evil, having our top players available makes a lot of difference to our performances. RVP, like Cesc is a winner and is therefore important to the team’s confidence. They can both pull out that piece of magic that can make the difference in the big games and having them both on the pitch at the same time really strengthens us.

  102. Different angle on the goals.

  103. “Oh and did anyone else notice Giberto in the dug-out right next to the other
lads? Great to see legends making their way home.”

I didn’t notice that Maria, but it’s great to see that our old boys still have the love for the Arsenal.

  104. Reading the post and everyone’s comments has brought me almost as much joy as the win yesterday! WOW! I was in dream land the rest of the night and still am!

And keep the vernacular Yogi, it is after all A CULTURED left foot. not just a boring or pedestrian left foot. but a cultured one. cheers.

The way Cesc would clear out a crowded midfield with one quick pass last night was unbelievable. Anyone who doubts he is Top 5 players in the world is having a laugh.

    COYG!!! Bring on Wigan!!

  105. OK, YW – I’ll take your word on that. I’m too happy to fight with anyone today, even Bill. Tomorrow, however…

  106. Can I also mention WTF happened to the so-called best left-back in the world yestersay? Theo took him to the cleaners that’s what!

Seeing his face after the second was priceless, wish you hadn’t been such a whoring like so and so now huh!

  107. Arsenal. Once you get it, it’s got you for life.

  108. Yes indeed – Theo owned Cashley. Like all the other Chavs, he thought he had our number. Then you could see the fear gripping them as the realisation dawned – this was a different Arsenal.

  109. I was confident going into the game. No doubts whatsoever about the victory. Come on, the bad run against the Chavs was to come to an end sooner or later. I really think we had them at Stamford bridge, but were a bit unlucky with the result. Yesterday’s performance was remarkable.

Not moaning or anything, but seeing Arshavin on the bench for a big match, was a great relief. He hardly ever gets going in the big matches. And looses the ball too much for my liking. And yesterday with Nasri on the left wing, we were efficient, kept the ball, and did not loose the ball in dangerous positions, which happens with Arshavin. Bold move by Arsene to play our big match player, in Theo Walcott. He was fantastic, shows, he is ready this season, seems to have come of age, after his displays earlier in the season before injury, and last night as well.

  110. Robert Pires’ touchline spat with Harry Redknapp on Sunday could be explained by the Frenchman’s latest comments in French newspaper L’Equipe.

The Aston Villa midfielder appeared to have a row with the Spurs boss during his side’s 2-1 defeat, courtesy of two Rafael Van Der Vaart goals, and his rage could be explained by not wanting to play in the icy conditions.

“When you play a game on 26 December most other players in the big leagues are on holidays in the sun and it annoys me,” he said.

“I receive text messages from my friends with photos of them lying on beaches and it aggravates me a little, but it is necessary as I must help Villa get away from the relegation zone.”

LMAO!!! Just read this by Robert Pires ‘the dreamy one’. Now if there is any footballer that should be on a bench it’s our Bobby.

  111. ha ha ha Maria
I always used to imagine Bobby stepping gingerly out of the coach in a cold night in Blackburn, glancing around disdainfully and saying to Arsene, “Zis is outrageous. Ah am an artiste. Ah cannot work in zese conditions.” Except that his English wasn’t good enough, so he would probably have said it in French.

  112. The other player who impressed me last night was Theo. His support for Sagna defensively was a very welcome sight and his threat kept cashley at bay for most of the match.

I hope Denilson and Vela get a little run in the team soon as we might need them against the BBB and it will give them a chance to be match ready.

  113. Who are BBB?

  114. Pass,

Your damn right I can imagine our Bobby doing that, flicking his hair back ofcause.

    Fun,

Seeing Vela not making the bench even again was dishearting for me and probably for him too. Hope Eboue, Tech9, Gibbs, Bendtner and others make some appearances too.

Great seeing Diaby back too. I love that guy!

  115. Ah of course, thanks dups.
    ***
    Other way around, Maria. :)

  116. Well done Birmingham 1-1

  117. Bowyer scores!!!

The Mancs drop more points away! Christmas just keeps giving!!!!

  118. What a shame that the Birmingham goal was offside. hahahaha
Man U fans whining about it is not going to change it.

  119. Sorry ladies was keeping an eye on those dirty Mancs.

  120. Nasri on twitter

“Good result we have to make the job tomorrow”

  121. A great draw for Birmingham (and us) against the Mancs. The most unconvincing of unbeaten runs continues.

Our awful November has been forgotten, and we march on into the new year with key players fighting fit.

    Come on you Gunners!

  122. Man U away form: P8 – W1 – D7, 10pts from a possible 24, hardly championship winning stuff.

  123. Fantastic, someone needs to take all 3 points off the mancs soon – surely even they can’t continue to ride their luck as long as they have! It would be a gross injustice if they got through an unbeaten season with this average shower of shite masquerading as a team.

  124. 1. Man U – P18, 38pts
    2. Man C – P20, 38pts
    3. Arsenal – P18, 35pts
    4. Spuda – P19, 33pts
    6. Cheski – P18, 31pts

That is a very close league table.

  125. Man U have also only played eight games away, compared to ten at home. They still have tough away fixtures against the Spuds, Chelsea, Liverpool, and of course the greatest team the world has ever seen.

  126. Mattyboy, ‘it’s by far the greatest team, the world has ever seen!’ And soon they’ll be showing the reason why!

  127. Let’s take it one game at a time, 3 points tomorrow to keep the run going and the spirits high…

    Arsenal – Chelsea
    Ho Ho Ho – blah

  128. Passenal – The games are coming thick and fast for us over this xmas and new year period, especially as we are gunning on four fronts. Luckily we have the best squad in the Prem, well its not luck is it, but I think we will be seeing those reasons sooner rather than later. I saw three great reasons yeasterday.

Check out this link, in it Fergie really has a big fat purple nose! YUCKKKKKK

  130. Delia---Block 112

Yes it was a great night . AW’s selection, the great football and the fan’s magnificent support all played their part in a night to remember but it was only worth 3 points ! What really matters is where we go from here, starting at the DW Stadium tomorrow night. With the array of talent available , AW should be able to field a side capable of securing a win not withstanding tired legs.
Must catch our win and retention of the Ashes at the MCG !
    As always COYRs.

  131. Slur Alex: ” (The equaliser was) handball, a foul on the centre-back. If the referee can’t see that what chance have you got? In a game at this level, of this importance, you expect the referee to see that. If he can’t, what chance have you got?”

    Whiny little bitch!

  132. G69,

LOL, did you see the picture on that link I put out of Fergie. Freaking fantastic pic of old purple nose!

  133. Maria, his face looked like a road map in that picture.

The only thing missing from that picture was the steam coming from his ears.

  134. Kalou got a booking for leading with his studs against Clichy. Ferdinand has gotten away with fouling Sagna and Cameron Jerome two games in a row now. What does Ferdinand have to do to get a booking?

Maria, Ferguson looks well beat up by years of alcohol abuse.

  135. It is not certain ManU will finish in the top 3 this season. I would be a little surprised if they did. ManC are starting to look quietly effective, and Spuds are already better than ManU, but not yet consistent. SAF shuffles the pack as best he can, but it reminds of the steady demise of Liverpool, when they still were tough to beat at home, but a big team gradually tipping. Park has been their best player, and when he’s out it shows. Evra is still the best left back around, but is not able to run a show single handed. Berbatov is menacing in the spuds sort of way, but will not carry this team. Rooney is all over the place, literally. Nani and Anderson have the swagger, but imagine spending time in their company! I quite like young Raphael though.

As for us, we must simply try our best, remain true to the tasks at hand, keep it real. I’m sure we will. The return of Cesc, RvP, Theo and Diaby is immense, and the timing could not be much better. Not long Vermaelen and Ramsey. If I am not mistaken we remain alive in all four cups, injured players returning, and the widely predicted goalkeeper ‘crisis’ hardly exists.

Now, well done to England for thrashing the Aussies at home. That’s more like it. Wonderful team effort. Fabulous bowling attack. Ponting publicly rebuked for arguing over a referred decision. Great memories.

  136. Your new post is not showing up on my browser. Something is wrong somewhere.

  137. I’ve checked my letter box and there ain’t no new post there neither. YW, is you gonna post or is you ain’t?

    Yes, Wigan.

I loved the interview with Shane (Wayne, whatever) Watson this morning, trembling at his own mention of the name Tremlett, he said “It wasn’t easy”.

  138. Blackpool have won more away games than Liverpool, Chelsea and Mancs combined.

    Amazing statistic!

  139. Park is off to some Asain Cup.

  154. ARSHAVIN, he scored a goal, created another, but still the SHITIEST PLAYER IN THE TEAM,constantly giving away the ball, piling pressure on his mates, what was wenger thinking? we need the same sense of judgement he showed against chelsea, too many changes, surely he has to take the blame, both in selection and in allowing a 10 man team equalise.so sad!

  155. we were robbed of a stone wall penalty. We should have won this game. Squillaci wasn’t at fault for the own goal he could not do anything else from a difficult angle

  156. WILSHERE,YOU STOOD TALL TODAY.

  157. rahl Wenger looks ahead. you simply cannot play the same team in 2 days. Maybe changes should have been made a bit earlier to get the third and finish off the game. A point in a fixture we lost last season isn’t soo bad.

  158. I think we overrate our backups a bit. Without Cesc and Song, it’s really hard for us to gain any sort of consistent passing going. Cesc and Rosicky should be partners, not replacements.

  159. You just cannot take any game in the premiership for granted but Wenger did tonight.Eight Changes no Nasri Song Walcott and RVP.You just cannot make that many changes 2 or 3 but not EIGHT.
And another goal conceded from a set piece will we ever learn?
