Chelsea Preview: Get It Out Of Your Heads

Only once have Arsenal tasted defeat in a home match on this date, sixty three years ago Liverpool emerged victorious by the odd goal in three. Whilst a similar result today will bring forth a slew of complaints, not many will moan if this campaign delivers the title as that 1947/48 season did. Pressure is on Arsenal this evening, not just from the wins by the Mancunians yesterday but also by the words of their captain following the defeat at Old Trafford a fortnight ago.

It seems that the battlefield for this game is being played out in the minds of the Arsenal squad. Chelsea want to ‘crush’ ‘weakened’ Arsenal; Fabregas wants the winning mentality restored if he is over his ‘mental barrier to his injury’; Wenger believes it would be a ‘psychological’ boost to win whilst Eboue claimed that Arsenal are not ‘scared’ of the visitors.

The words are symbolic of the way that the two clubs view this fixture; Chelsea have recent history on their side and are confident of winning. Arsenal have a tide of history against them, whenever titles are talked about the poor form in big three clashes is inevitably mentioned. Tonight is another opportunity to change that.

For quite possibly the first time in living memory, Wenger has almost a complete first team squad to pick from. Realistically, only Vermaelen is missing; on current form it is unlikely that Almunia would displace Fabianski, the Pole having done little wrong in his outings since the Spaniard’s injury woes.

Woijciech Szczesny may have performed admirably at Old Trafford but I cannot see him retaining his place on a permanent basis. For this match, it might have crossed Wenger’s mind that the younger of the two Poles is better on crosses and does not have the ‘baggage’ of previous Chelsea defeats but it would be a slap in the face for Fabianski not to start. Unless his hip injury has played up, of course.

One thing that Arsenal will know is how Chelsea will play tonight. They will sit deep, let Arsenal play in front of their massed ranks of midfield and defence whilst looking to hit on the counter. In the corresponding fixture last season, Arsenal were frustrated by two fortuitous moments for the visitors but also by the absence of a cutting edge themselves. Many crosses were played into the centre with no-one to be on the end of them. For this reason, it would be hard to see a starting line-up without Chamakh or Bendtner leading the line.

Wenger has a quandry though. How to fit his array of attacking talent around them. With an additional week’s rest and training only, Fabregas, van Persie and Diaby are all back in contention. The former pair are further down the road of match fitness than the latter. Having gently eased them into the first team, relatively successfully, Wenger will surely do the same with Diaby.

The Frenchman, like Denilson, divides opinions. He is either useless or an undervalued member of the squad. Previous campaigns have seen him struggle on the left, as fitness and inexperience were worked on. Moving centrally has seen him realise his potential but it has been dogged by inconsistency. Rarely has he put a run of performances together where he has maintained a strong contribution.

Against Chelsea though, his physique counts in his favour; tonight’s visitors will try to impose themselves on Arsenal reputedly less physical midfielders. Whichever trio/quartet/quintet Wenger fields, they will need to ensure that their passing game and defensive positioning ensures that the attacking flair can exploit any gaps which may be created.

My concern over tonight is psychological. Arsenal went to Old Trafford against one of the weakest Manchester United sides for more than a decade but they were inhibited; they failed to impose themselves and get their passing game into gear. Can that be resolved in training? It has to be otherwise we will bear witness to another defeat in these contests. Forget Chelsea’s recent poor run of results; that will not go on forever and they will become more consistent once more.

The underperformance a fortnight ago may bring about a reprieve for some. Whilst Diaby has a strong case for inclusion, I cannot see him usurping Jack Wilshere from the side. The youngster is building an understanding with Song and to bring back Fabregas with Diaby may leave a midfield that whilst knowing each other, is essentially a group of strangers this season.

It might be too unsettling and stop Arsenal winning that battle. It leaves Wenger with one place to fill; either Rosicky or Arshavin could play the wider role but to not include Samir Nasri at this moment in time would be folly of the highest order, and inconceivable.

With that in mind, I would have a line-up for kick-off:

Fabianski; Sagna, Koscielny, Squillaci, Clichy; Fabregas, Song, Wilshere, Nasri; van Persie, Chamakh

As much as I would like Djourou to play, I suspect Wenger will believe that Squillaci’s experience might be key to shackling Drogba. The Ivorian’s record against Arsenal is one of the things that must be dealt with by the defenders physically and mentally.

The time to show strength of character is tonight. The past two months have seen Premier League wobbles; they have been accommodated by the inconsistency of others but that cannot be relied upon forever. The start of a long undefeated run needs to happen now, not even sooner rather than later, for any consistency shown will eke away at others.

Taking chances when they are presented has to happen; who knows what would have happened at Stamford Bridge had Koscielny not missed, a glaring opportunity that got away and one that is still impossible to fathom how he missed.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Worst thing about today is the knowledge that I have to watch Chelsea.

  2. Lovely stuff, and some very good points regarding Diaby.

Do you think that Wenger will start Van Persie out wide? He has generally been preferred in the hole or up front himself when he has played this season. I’m thinking Wenger may keep either him or Chamakh on the bench for extra firepower late on.

  3. Yes steww and I se that Lampard will start as well. Eugh.

  4. Playing Diaby is always a bit of a risk, because you never know what Diaby will show up. Unlike Denilson, with whom you generally know what you are going to get, Diaby’s performance ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous. But he is a fantastic talent, and once he finds his mojo, he will be an absolute legend for us.

  5. All very true. I feel a little sick today – the pressure regarding this fixture is spastically behemothic. The fallout, if we stumble again, could be disproportionate to reality itself.

With the lengthy build up to this fixture the knives have been diamond sharpened by the media, the AAA and (sadly) even by our own captain. The accusation of mental weakness hangs in the air like a pregnant nappy.

The finger pointing will be unvbearable – it is not inconcievable that this could even see a fracturing of the team/squad unit. Fabregas has rarely showed his true colours this season and the suspicion whether fair or not is that they are more blue and red than red and white. He needs to step up today – and if he doesn’t and we fail he would do better to look at himself than to look forward to a summer exit.

Looking across at the other blogs it is interesting how Le Grove always goes into these big games delerious with optimism (in stark contrast to it’s usual D&G). The bigger they ratch the belief the greater the vituperative bile they can spit the next day if it goes wrong.

If we win no doubt the title will be ours in their minds but WL or D the reality is there are twists and turns aplenty to come.

One thing is for certain if we lose there will be nowhere for this team to hide.

  6. You’re kidding, 4-4-2 with Fabregas & Nasri on the wings??…
…the biggest problem Arsenal will have is protecting against counter-attack. I have never seen a team more vulnerable than Arsenal (unless it was England against Germany) and that’s because nobody protects the space in front of the central defenders. Song won’t do it and the other midfielders aren’t capable so I’d suggest Koscielny be detailed hold that position. He’s fairly quick & decent on the ball & should add steel to the spine of the team…4-2-3-1…
    Pole (take your pick)
Sagna, Squillaci, Djourou, Clichy…(fullbacks getting forward)
    Song, Koscielny
Nasri, Fabregas, Van Persie…(narrow & interchanging)
    Chamakh
…no guarantees of course but they’d be much more solid without sacrificing their creativity.
    A well-wisher

  7. Delia---Block 112

With all our rivals securing 3 points yesterday, the pressure tonight to do likewise will be immense . I see a very nervy start and can only hope Chelski don’t pounce while we get our act together.
Hope my nerves hold out, at least First Capitol Connect have put on a late train.
    As always COYRs.

  8. Today’s is a game that could have huge ramifications on the rest of our season. A win will breed confidence and keep us in touch with ManU. A great position to be in when you consider we have played almost the entire first half of the season with the spine of our team missing. Get these players back and fit, with the additions allowing us to rest and rotate and we genuinely have a chance of the league.

I’m not worried about Cesc, he is a winner and will always give commitment but he will also be aware that if he does want that move to Barca he is going to have to put in the performances to attract the fee Arsenal will demand.

    COME ON ARSENAL!!!!

  9. Good post YW

I for one am really glad to see Diaby back. He was, an admitedly woeful french teams best player last summer. Also earlier this season , before the assaults by Robinson and Essien respectivley, he looked to be spectacularly direct. He offers us extra height and strength in midfield and for me, is part of our first choice midfield trio when fully fit. He is still young and I am convinced Diaby will be a great. I think he is one of our most exciting players, if he can only get some luck with injuries I know we will see it.

I am going to go all out and say we NEED to at least avoid defeat tonight to win the title. A convincing win would boost our chances considerably….hammering them might even swing the media in our favour which could have no end to increase in belief…as much as I hate to acknowledge their affect.

  10. @ J Moore @ 10:53
Playing Koscielny next to Song is an intriguing suggestion. It would be interesting to see how that would work out.

  11. Your team is madness.RVP and Chamakh together no way, its either one or the other.Arshavin must stay.Say what you like he is a match winner.Once again an Arsenal/Chelsea game will be decided on how we cope with Drogba. If we cant he will have a field day.Szczesny MUST START he is a better keeper than Fabianski at Set pieces and Chelsea’s game is about balls into the box.I see a 1-1

  12. It is not our defense that gives rise to concern, but the question mark that shadows Cesc, and RvP.

I wish we were playing this match a month from now. I feel we’re still fielding a line-up that is not up to full strength – even if Cesc, Diaby, and RvP are available.

  13. I’m usually a pessimist in games like these. It is usually a self protecting mechanism to prevent my week from being completely fouled up after another Arsenal loss. But for this game I feel a victory coming on.
The match this evening has many ramifications. You might consider this a very a strong statement to make, but I believe a loss tonight will signal a significant failure in Arsene’s youth project. It will not help a significantly frail self belief in the players either. Also there will be significant finger waggging from the press.
Chelsea by any stretch of the imagination are not unbeatable. As far as I’m concerned theirs is a team in decline only bolstered by past glory. But that said they still pose a significant threat any day.It is telling of how lacking in self belief that chelsea are at the moment that all week long in the papers they have been trying to talk their chances up.It speaks volumes that Mark Lawrenson on the BBC is predicting a 2-1 victory to the Arsenal.
We need Cesc,RVP,Samir and the team as a whole to step up and win this game.It is not impossible.Likewise the defenders need to shackle Drogba.

  14. Don, he may be a match winner when he’s in the mood, but he weakens the team when he’s not as he does not work hard enough and leaves the rest of the team exposed. He’s a luxury player but what we need tonight are hard workers who will defend from the front. I would play RVP in place of Arshavin and Nasri on the right to occupy cashley. If fit enough, Djourou and Diaby would be starting in place of Kos and Wilshere if I was choosing. But it’s not my call thankfully. Whoever is selected will get my full support tonight and hopefully they will all (even Arshavin!) bust a gut to get us a result.

  15. normally chelsea just “gobble up these balls”

  16. 3 games in 6 days..Happy Festive Period y’all!!

  17. YW:

Good post. Agree with almost everything you say. Earlier in the year I would have agreed with your statement regarding the weakness of ManU but I am not so sure anymore. The thing that made them vulnerable was poor defending. Unfortunately it seems like they may have fixed that problem. They have always been scoring plenty of goals even though they are a 1 man team without the 1 man. I think they do lack depth in the back so I guess we can always hope for injuries to Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra and EVDS.

Today we have no excuses and nothing to fear. We have as close to a full squad as any team can ever hope for. Chelsea is in miserable form. Drogba has not score in ages. Lampard has not played for months. Our home pitch will not be slippery. We can not control the referee but hopefully our guys will not worry about things they can not control. Come on guys lets win 2 – 0. Its time for this group of players to man-up.

  18. Agree wit Passenal 12:59pm

when arshavin is in the mood he can destroy teams, but when he is not, its double work for clichy…..would prefer RVP to start but it is all up 2 wenger. If arshavin starts I hope he would be in the form of his life especially with the little break, which i believe is long enough for the jaded ones to rest and short enough for the team to have an understanding and build on good past performances. I just hope the arsenal on show today does not resemble one coming from an international break but ready to play without fear and take there chances cos even chelsea currently are not at there best.

  19. The game will be streaming live on ESPN 3 for anyone who can get it. Its a great computer link. It will also be TV on ESPN 2.

  20. I think Yogi has correctly predicted the starting XI.

Injury permitting I`d imagine Arsene would want to play against his first choice against Chelsea & Man Citeh but keeper apart I can`t see anyone else starting all four games over the next nine days.

I`d expect Eboue , D’jourou, Denilson, Diaby, Bendtner & Walcott to start at least one of the away games.

  21. I hope Arshavin slept twelve hours a day these past few weeks. I hope he’s fresh and willing to work his arse off tonight.

  22. At some point in this season I would like to see:

    Sagna Djourou Vermaelen Gibbs
    Song Diaby
    Nasri
    Bendtner Van Persie
    Chamakh
    /

I think this team has bite.

  23. One of those matches that make me nervous as I don’t think anyone is intimidated at the grove, it isn’t a fortress yet. I’d play Djourou in place of Koscielny. Drogba would have Koscielny for supper! Diaby or Denilson for Wilshere. RVP upfront surported by Nasri and Arshavin. And hope like hell that Cesc has a great day. All said and done still expect a 3:0 score to the gunners. COYG!

  24. Perhaps Arshavin is a luxury player. A team like Arsenal can certainly afford to include one luxury player. When we played man utd, however, it looked a lot like we had five luxury players on the pitch. That we cannot afford. I wouldn’t dismiss Arshavin out of hand, but his inclusion has to be balanced by the inclusion of reliable players elsewhere.

  25. I wouldn’t be tempted to play Diaby today. His silky skills are rarely effective against the better opponents (among which Chelsea can still just about be included), and yet we know from past experience that he will continue to use them regardless.

  26. Hope you Gooners are making the most of the festive season.
I have been happy as Larry all day watching my kids playing with all their new gear santa got em but, every 20 mins or so my gut wrenches and a horrible feeling comes over me thinking about the big game tonight.

Really I shouldn’t be feeling like that and I don’t think i’m the only one but, I still remember like yesterday the times when I was so confident before the team would go into battle v any side because we had leaders all over the park and nobody could slack off. We have not one leader in this current side. Nobody talks or gees anybody up in our team. Even if you watch under 10s play you can hear them talking to each other.

And then watching Prem Years on the box it makes me feel worse cos those times weren’t that long ago and yes we rebuild and all that but, so has Utd and they seem to still have what we use to in terms of giving blood for the cause no matter how dire the situation looks.

For me there’s only one man to blame for it. Before he had me brain washed due to the fact that we simply have the £s to get ready made quality but, that time came to an end about 2 and a half years ago.

When looked at closer it’s not even about the money cos he could of got ready made players on a number of occasions but, he chose to go abroad and bring in lightweight players nowhere ready for battle in the EPL. I honestly can’t believe that I have to feel this way every time we play utd, chel or them f-king spuds. It’s not right and it’s not the Arsenal way. When will we wake up and smell it?

It was nice to hear Rio say in a TV interview i saw yesterday that he thought Nasri, was the player who is standing out this season and bigged up Nasri’s goal. I knew straight away how happy he was when he seen the team sheet and saw Nasri out on the wide cos he knows like the whole world does that Nasri, is not as happy as he is there as he would be in the middle of the park.

You don’t get much from player who doesn’t really want to play in that position. You get even less from a player like Cesc who doesn’t even want to be at the club but, wenger will continue to try and please Cesc, like he did with Gallas and gave him the armband instead of Kolo.

For what reason is Theo, not playing nowadays??

I hope the team can stand up as men and be counted. It’s not the loses that bother me it’s the manner of the loses and i think wenger has clearly run out of ideas in his head to compete anymore or just gone stale. Whatever he’s got I don’t really care anymore just want some dignity back regarding our club and not buying his post match crap.

  27. ..and a Happy New Year to you Goonerton.

You are obviously in need of cheering up if you can’t look forward to tonight’s game.

  28. Thanks Deano (& YW!).

    RVP playing with Chamack?
Nice to see those clips of RVP and Ade. So many players, in their ‘prime’ (lazy, clichéd expression, hopefully you all know what I mean) look like ghosts after leaving AFC. I guess they just have no pride. Or dignity.

Diaby might not play today. As OleG wrote of Djourou, I hope Diaby returns ‘hungry’.

Djourou had fun with meedjah darling Carroll for thirty odd minutes during the CC game.
A tiny bit harsh there, KG, but I understand your meaning: Koscilny and Djourou did not allow their (mid/lower-table) opponents a shot the last time they played together. And I don’t think there were any outstanding mistakes from Kos in the first Chel$ki game, when Drogba was fit? Apart from missing that chance.
Our ‘player of the season’, who’s played brilliantly (at ‘RW’ but has he been as effective at CM: Liverpool Away game?), Nasri, had better watch Ca$hley this time. If he doesn’t, don’t worry, I’ll be blaming the D-Fencers!

No surprises, I’d like to see Walcott start. Funny how that’s now become suddenly fashionable. The Arsenal blog troll/s: Fickle? (Shhhh, don’t mention Gallas’ captaincy over on the other side…might blow out a logic board there). I’d like to see Nasri and Walcott in the wider positions. Nothing to do with them being the quickest players. Nope! But then could Chamack and RVP both start? Dammit.
    -
Nobody in their right mind would ever underestimate ManIOU as has been suggested recently (See Rafa’s ‘rant’). I’d compiled a useless list of ‘clean sheets’ for the top five teams in the league, and of their defenders but I’ll spare everyone as I don’t want to jinx tonight’s game, or my random prediction: 1-0 to the Arsenal.

    COYM!

  29. Goonerton, i certainly dont beleive Nasri is better in the centre, for me cesc is still the master of the no.10 position. Nasri to me only plays well centrally in europe, lets look at matches he played in the center, we never own the midfield battle. Look at wigan last season when cesc got injured at the end , most of all collapse invloved nasri in the center, ed totenham, wigan. Even this season, at newcastle and west brom( even if he scored 2 goals, we didnt own the midfelid). Nasri who imo is th best player in the prem currently, is still better out wide , he offers alot of creativity out wide . Cesc is still the master of the no.10 and he isnt far from being the best in the world in that position. Who ever said Nasri is unhappy out wide??

  30. ya know, i reckon the last time djourou started against chelsea we won, even though he put one in our net. and to boot i dont think drogba scored. i’ll take that.

  31. Arsenal 2 – Chelsea 1…remember where you heard it first. This team is closer than the media give it credit. Are we the most psychoanalysed team in the EPL.Whether it is a mental barrier or not we have been unable to score against Man U or Chelsea and this needs to change. One day Arsenal are title contenders the other day they arent. Please media make ur mind up. I think Arsene will surprise Chelsea today. My money is definitely on a home win for the boys in red. COYG.

  32. Yes boss. Arsenal 3- 1 chelsea. Im so happy Diaby i back

  33. Inetersting post as usual Yogi…I’ve no idea of what side Wenger will decide to field tonight..All that is blatantly obvious is that a performance is required c soir..should we lose in a manner that is unbefitting of an Arsenal team a tirade of abuse is going to be levelled at Wenger and The Team..We have to win it is simple…
Jambo Kenyan Gunner your enthusiasm always brightens up my day….We have it be brave- HOBARI…

  34. latest team news on BBC sport: RVP and Cesc start.Fabianski in goal.
I personally though we needed Chamakh or NB52 to give some height upfront.

  35. Team news per ESPN:
    Fab
    Clichy Kos JD Sagna
    Song JWils
    Nas Cesc TW14
    RVP
Subs: TR, AA, Diaby, Squills, Chamakh, B52, Wookash

Love this lineup!! Hope it works.

  36. I think rvp is 6′ 2″

  37. Our bench destroys theirs. Their subs are: Turnbull, Ramires, Bosingwa, Kakuta, Van Aanholt, Bruma, McEachran. Our depth in attacking midfield is pretty stunning.

  38. I like the line up. Really glad to see Johan. I wish we had started TR7 instead of Theo. Chelsea has scored most of the goals down the wing and TR7 offers experience and defensive cover. Theo as impact sub is better Nonetheless glad Theo is starting instead of Andrey. Glad wookash is back

  39. Goonerton @ 5:25:

    Be reasonable, not now.

  40. Steve Claridge is a cunt.

  41. Keown putting Claridge & his pals in their place on 5Live.
    A solid innings from MK.

    COYG!

  42. I see we are out for a win. A very positive starting eleven with no cover for Song. Its win or bust!

  43. Wenger means business today. He busted out the super squad.

  44. Strong squad from Chelsea as well – excepting the bench of course!

  45. Claridege is an imbecile…..no where to run no where to hide…Team have to stand up and play with PRIDE..COYG..

  46. Come on you gorgeous Gunners!

  47. Any streams please any one?

  48. Terry should have been carded for that!

  49. Any update on the game guys??

  50. eish! Can we at least score!

  51. its still 0-0

  52. Mongolian Gooner

What a cool attempt by Nasri.

  53. Bloody song goetting forward!!!!

  54. 1 – 0 song!

  55. 1-0 Arsenal – what a fantastic time to score!

  56. Song just needs to learn how to stay back FFS!

  57. Mongolian Gooner

    Song. I love you.

    Isn’t Song a D**M???

  61. We have only got one SONG

  62. Just got to keep going through the second half. We have our foot on Chelsea’s throat – let’s apply the killer blow.

  63. common lads

conclude this beautiful thing in the second half/

although another goal will not be bad, like i said earlier, I would take 1 – 0 to the Arsenal!

  64. @ IndianGooner
Wow. He’s got the talent, so I’m glad Arsene encourages him to exploit it fully.

  65. Second half still coming hang on boys!

  66. Good on you Alex Song!
Maybe the bloggers who know better than Wenger will actually comprehend that a defensive midfielder can do more than sit in front of the defenders.
BTW: How many goals has Mikel scored this season?

  67. Mongolian Gooner

What was Theo doing when Song was charging forward? Watching football game from the pitch? Quite literally. Haha. A.Cole is handling him with no difficulty. Hope he turns things around next half.

  68. And van persie missed a sitter, petr saved that super shot from nasri.how the hell does terry get away with holding people’s arms!i counted atleast 5 times.it was nice seeing walcot giving cole a hard time.45 more mins of the same and a 3-0win will be welcome.

  69. Mongolian Gooner

Any type of win is welcome.

  70. This Cesc is on fire!!!

  71. Whats why Theo is on the pitch Mongolian Gooner.

  72. At last the potential is fulfilled !!!
    Fantastic !!!!!!!

  73. Walcott!!!! 3-0 – finally we are doing ourselves justice!

  74. Three and easy.

  75. We have been on the front foot from the start of this half. Theo strikes 3-0.

  76. I am satisfied.

  77. That theo walcott…no football brain hey.

  78. well composed finish by Walcott….
    Onforwards
Bill the ESPN feed is brilliant..Really good quality….We got to take em to the cleaners….Run em ragged…urt em where it hurts….let em know how it has feels…As we know Chelsea are an OLD team…Their days as a top team are over…Onwards Forwards..

  79. Just wait till Chelsea get Anelka back. Then you’ll see.

  80. Kakuta to save the game? Give me a break!

  81. I agree, G4L! Damn this Theo, damn Song, damn all those useless players. Can’t even beat Chelsea 10:0. Just 3:0, such a disgrace!

  82. 3:1

  83. ha!

    More like it!

Common lads… the goals diff can come in handy!

What an irony is Chelsea is the team we eventually give a good dusting at home to settle the home advantage nerves! They have troubled us too much in the past!

  84. common defenders… do your work!

  85. Damn Fat Frank!

  86. Chelsea is going to kick once they are behind. They did the same to the Totts three (3) weeks ago. Need to keep our heads.

  87. The chavs are having there good spell.

  88. Is Song injured?? Has He been subbed???

  89. No Denilson on the bench to kill the game!

  90. But we are holding strong.

  91. I am not worried. We won’t give this one away. No way. We will win. We are the Arsenal.

  92. Mongolian Gooner

Yep, I know thats why he’s on the pitch. And I am glad. I was merely pointing that he looked like a spectator on the pitch. Now if Robin van Persie scores I will be very happy.

  93. Cesc out for Wigan game.

  94. Diaby to pack the midfield!

  95. we need to hold on!!!

  96. The game’s still tight. I hate this. Not nice on my nerves.

  97. Packing the midfield gives A Hole Cole the chance to have a go at Sagna.

  98. from bbc text… should cheer us up

GraymeadYNWA on 606: “I still cannot find the last time Arsenal threw away a 3 goal lead. My first thought was the 4-4 wth Spurs, but they were never 3 up in that one, and I have gone all the way back to 2002 looking for one. I don’t know why Arsenal fans are so worried.”

  99. We can begin celebrating. A great xmas present. COYG!

  100. 0:53 hours in Nairobi. What a win!

  101. YESS! Words can’t describe!

I fucking LOVE all you guys. Even the cunts.

  102. 3-1 TO THE ARSENAL!
There goes the drought to the Big 3.

  103. Faultless performance by the boys. We are back and we are going to win the league.

  104. Thats what a near full strength arsenal can produce.

the season still has a lot to be played!

  105. What a fantastic game.. Song!! And the Theo/Cesc combo ~ lovely night!

  106. Our solidity at the back is going to pose big a problem for all these teams coming to the Emirates and sitting back waiting for the counter. Didn’t work for Chelsea tonight.

  107. I’ve lost my goddamn voice. I’m glowing like a frigging super saiyan. My team are awesome. Best Christmas ever.

Alex Dimitri Song Billong you fucking legend.

    My team. It’s love

  108. i really laughed at this! Sam Alladiacio @ the Bridge? LOL

2156: Just six points for Chelsea from their last eight games. What sort of adjective does that warrant? Crisis? Probably. How much time left for Carlo Ancelotti? I’m going to start a Big Sam campaign. he deserves one of the really big clubs.

  109. Caboose001 on 606: “Wonder how many Bolton fans would have believed you if you said Bolton would be two points behind Chelsea at the halfway stage…?”

powerdel on 606: “Wonder how many Bolton fans would have believed you if you told them that if they win their next game against Chelsea, they go above Chelsea.”

  110. Now that is how to man-up. Great chance to jump start 2nd half of the season. Now to build on it.

  111. The cream always rises to the top. And all the cr@p excuses the media can come up with there is no hiding from how imperious Arsenal have been…and how limp…lifeless…crap…Chelsea have been. Eat that..believe?…never doubted for a second..next game please.COYG!!!!Arsene f©#kin knows!!!

  112. WE LOVE YOU ARSENAL……WE DO
    WE LOVE YOU ARSENAL……WE DO

    AAAAARRSENAL…………..WE LOVE YOU

    Sorry for the caps

….Actually, no I’m not sorry for the caps.

  113. Big ups to Djourou and Kos, kept Drogba silent!

What a glorious display and win!

  114. What a goal by Theo. He won the ball back and then finished with some style.

  115. @ OOU
    Ha ha!

    ****
Let’s hope this turns out to be an historic result. It sounded like they have finally decided to grasp their destiny as the greatest team the world has ever seen. By far. (I guess we must have secretly bought a couple of experienced players since the other day?) We’ve been too gung-ho, we’ve been too defensive and FINALLY we’ve got the balance right.

  116. Dede got dealt with by Johan tonight! I am so proud of him!!!

  117. Here’s one NewsNow headline that bit the dust:
“4-3-3: The reason Arsenal can’t win the big games” written by one David Gold
I suppose that is why Barcelona hasn’t won anything ovder the past three years. Now the jackass he has to rewrite the script

  118. I predicted it…. Welcome back RVP and captain cesc. Hope cesc isnt hurt tho

  119. WHERE`S F&CKING DAVE ?
    HAHAHAHAHAH LOL LOL

  120. gotta love this tweet:

    swissRamble
To Didier Drogba, That was for Big Phil, best regards Johan Djourou. *kisses Swiss passport*

  121. As much as I love Cesc, how is Song not MOTM!?!

  122. What really makes me feel good is that we won with style, the Arsenal way!

  123. Djourou and Vermaelen. Squillaci and Koscielny. In terms of both compatibility and quality.

Djourou is the footballing equivalent of Marvin Gaye. Nothing dents that man’s composure. He is the calmest and coolest of our defenders, despite being the least experienced.

  124. One of Us: “I fucking LOVE all you guys. Even the cunts.”

    Yipeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hooray for the cunts.

  125. Agreed, Paul N.

  126. Paul N, cute kid – with style!

  127. Thanks Ken Gun, we watched together!

  128. Diaby, work on your left foot! lol

It didnt seem like Diaby was out for so long, he was quite good.

  129. Wenger pretty much played everyone who we wanted played. Djourou and Koscielny? Here you go ACLF. Theo? Here you go as well. Arshavin on the bench? Thank you. Magnificent stuff. If Wenger were to listen to the doomers, though, Theo, Djourou (MOTM), Koscielny and Flapianski wouldn’t have been on the pitch.

The team was glorious today. We looked the likeliest to win from the kick off. Everyone had a sense of urgency and they wanted to win. I still don’t agree with Cesc about Arsenal being scared or having belief issues. This is what fucking happens when we have everyone fit. We have the best squad bar none of anyone in the premiership.

I fucking love Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.

  130. We dominated them as we’ve done many times before. The difference? We finished some chances and their tactic (big punt upfield) didn’t come off. Should have been 4 or 5 but I’ll settle for three.
The era of the egg cup is upon us.

  131. A song that should be played at Arsenal home games.

  132. I hope that this helps them take the pressure off themselves. That coudl be the biggest benefit of such an emphatic result.

  133. OOU “I fucking LOVE all you guys. Even the cunts.”
    has me in splits :P

  134. true G69, this Arsenal team at full strength is a different animal entirely.

  135. Personally, I think the dual win by Johan was the most important difference tonight! Drogba was their ace and that ace was eliminated! Superbbbbbb!!!!!!! Luvin’ itttt

I already had a splitting headache from that damn swine flu, now Arsenal have just put me on the rollercoast from heaven!

P.S Don’t you love it when we score first? Thank you Song!!

  136. Effen awesome! Damn it’s good to be a Gooner. Damn proud of the team!

  137. Paul N:
“Diaby, work on your left foot! lol

It didnt seem like Diaby was out for so long, he was quite good.”

Forget that. It should be Clichy, work on your chocolate leg.

I’m just glad Essien didn’t have a go at his ankle again.

  138. Kudos to Johan and the Kos. Based on his last performances Johan needs to be 1st CB on the team sheet for a long time. A short celebration for the team then on to wigan

  139. I should put up more bets on arsenal.so happy we finally broke the top 4 jink.we could have scored 8 today if we had taken all our chances.i loved the djourou/koscielny combo and clichy was really great apart from that one dilly dally moment where he almost cost us.the whole team played like it was a cup game and chelsea’s shots on target tell the story.

  140. after all these years of losing to Chelsea and the countless hours of moaning about the defense, I am not even thinking about Wigan!

So proud the boys have gotten this monkey off of their backs!

    ARSENAL!!!!

  141. Arsene interview on Arseneonline right now!

  142. Part 2 of season 09/10 ReVeNgE on Wednesday night..don’t miss it!

  143. Bill: “Kudos to Johan and the Kos. Based on his last performances Johan needs to be 1st CB on the team sheet for a long time. A short celebration for the team then on to wigan.”

Don’t be a dick, Bill. Djourou, Squillaci and Koscielny rotate depending on the oposition. Let the manager sort things out. I think he knows a bit more than you do about D-fence.

  144. Mongolian Gooner

Brilliant Result. Had a hard time keeping quit. My family slept in the next room. Pressed my mouth on the first goal. Let out a gasp on the second. And silently screamed on the last goal.

I envy the matchgoers. Huge freedom. Singing and screaming at will. :D

  145. Congratulations to the Arsenal, this win is a major pyschological boost, the team played well, confidence restored, half way thru the hurdle all we need now is to take each game as it comes and also give manu a taste of this medicine and come May we could be lifting the EPL trophy.

  146. The fact that the Chelsea vs. ManU game might be moved to the end of the season might be a blessing in disguise. I believe the Chelsea we faced would have struggled against ManU, but maybe the pensioners will find some form come May and be able to beat ManU — which would be great for us!

  147. Does anyone think, Alex Song is going to be the best defence-minded midfielder in the world?? The next Michael Essien may be?

  148. OleGunner on twitter…
Worth noting that 1st time in 2 yrs we’ve had our strongest side against top opposition we win.

  149. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE LADS AND THE MANAGER. Not a bad performance from a clueless manager and gutless players. Steve Claridge is really not very bright, I’m sorry to say.

I’m sitting here listening to 5Live and I’m tearing my hair out listening to Steve Claridge. Pre_ Kick -off Steve was sure that Arsenal were mentally weak, that Wenger didn’t spend because he was scared, that Drogba WOULD bully our CBs, that our predictable tactics would see us lose in the usual manner especially because Chelsea were so fantastic in the second half against Tottenham.

After the game Steve is now saying that He is sure if we won because we were better than were previous or if Chelsea were worse! And this guy is paid to offer this stuff as “EXPERT” opinion? I want my licence fee back!

What I feel right now more relief than elation…I always believed that this team could deliver… I wasn’t sure when and I wasn’t sure how but for me there is just soooooo much quality in our side that once we get the players to believe and play as they can then we really should be favorites for the league and much else besides. I know that some may say that I’m getting ahead of myself but I believe that the facts bear me out… look at our starting eleven and remember we still haven’t Vermaelen in there and then look on the bench and tell ma of another team that can match our quality? Don’t get me wrong we are nowhere near as good as we should be even tonight but that is a plus… when i think that Nasri will get better, Cesc will get better, Song is still adding elements to his game, wilshere will get better, Sczczeny is waiting in the wings, Djourou is nowhere near his full potential yet…. even if one or two fall off and fail to measure to what I imagine there’s no way that all of them will fail! Seriously the AAA doomers have to be insane….

I love you all right now! And thank God for a sane and intelligent Arsenal site…

  150. MJ, Alex Song is already better than Essien. What other DM do you know of who can score more than five goals a season and defend as good as he does? Essien came from Lyon hyped to the tits but now he’s just a regular player who gets away with dirty tackles. Fuck Michael Essien!!!!!

  151. Theo Walcott ” We play a bit of fifa together so it was just a simple X.”

    love it..

  152. Awesome result.

I’d love to see the injury stats on our big games for the past few seasons. I wouldn’t mind betting this is the first time in a LONG time we’ve played Man U or Chelsea with 9 or 10 of our first 11 fit.

    Coincidence? I doubt it somehow.

  153. “‘Fantastic’ Arsenal made Chelsea look average in 3-1 victory’”

Some quarters in the Media are trying to find the excuse for Chel$ki and belittle our victory….well, guess what fvckers…no one gives us any excuses when we lose, so the header above is a more accurate description of what happened today.

Are the Chel$ks so weak now they can’t take it like real “men” any more?

  154. Had to steal a few minutes and comment.

What a game! What a performance! What a team!

I’m already in the dog house if you consider that I’m married to a Chelsea fanatic. But I’ll take the sofa – no problem whatsoever.

The best part of the game for me was the discipline. Chelsea tried counter attacking several times only to be faced by a wall of 4 Arsenal shirts written “over my frigging dead body”.

I’d really like to know how many shots on and off target Chelsea had.

Djourou and Koscielny had Drogba in their pocket, and the team played for each other. The only winner today was Arsenal’s psyche and “can do” spirit.

    Bring on Wigan.

  155. An entirely predictable result, especially with hindsight. Chelsea must have the worst form in the league at the moment. I admit my memory’s not what it used to be, but I can’t remember the last time they won. I wouldn’t put any money on them beating Bolton on Wednesday. A lot of the Pensioners probably struggle to get out of bed two days after a match.

  156. Darius, they had 10 shots 3 on target according to Sky.

  157. “I’m already in the dog house if you consider that I’m married to a Chelsea fanatic. But I’ll take the sofa – no problem whatsoever.”

    ha ha ha ha!

  158. Do you all think we should bring out a DVD of the game :)

  159. @ Mongolian Gooner

Know what you mean. Myself, I’ve had to suffer like this for years. Not allowed to shout or scream, apartment too small, would scare the shit out of the family. You develop all kinds of coping strategies but it’s really bad for your health. At the very first trophy win I’ll lose myself and scream the house down I’m afraid.

  160. The players are saying on twitter how mush they appreciated the atmosphere in the stadium, and some people think it does not matter.

  161. Poliziano…

I think that it is too easy to say that result was predictable after the event.. In truth with proper hindsight it wasn’t predictable at all. Chelsea by rights should have won at Tottenham, they missed a last minute penalty. And then they had a two week break which was supposed to have helped them recover and get the likes of Lampard the physical work he supposedly needed. I know that some of us are more cautious than others but let’s not kid ourselves here… we were better than Chelsea’s first eleven missing only Alex and Anelka whilst we were without Vermy. We played them earlier in the season without Cesc, Van Persie and Vermaelen and no one in the media cut us any slack whatsoever. This team of ours is good. Very good even… what it has lacked has been maturity and self belief and we are now getting that..

  162. Just back from the game and what a fantastic night! The atmosphere was electric from start to finish. No late arrivers and no early leavers for a change and almost non-stop singing. And then there was the result! When we Theo scored the third I was jumping up and down so much I thought I would take off! I have to pinch myself to check that I’m not dreaming! ( I know, I’ve gone way overboard on the exclamation points but I can’t help it!) A night like tonight calls for it.

    Gunner4ever, that attitude from the media does not surprise me – they always try to find excuses for the opposition when we win, but I don’t care. I’m just ‘H A P P Y, I’m H A P P Y, I know I am I’m sure I am, I’m H A P P Y’

  163. Passenal, I can’t agree more…this is a night where nothing really matters except the result and the happiness it brings. This team deserves so much, but always being put down by losing to the so called big teams. Now they can stuff this result and they know exactly where.
    ===
“When we Theo scored the third”

Was this a typo or is this a new way of scoring? :)

When we Theo scored or when we Song scored…..I like the sound of that.

  164. By rights, Chelsea should have won the league two days ago. Fortunately, we are no respecters of the inalienable rights of fucking Chelsea. I guess the laws of the universe don’t respect Chelsea rights either. When they win a penalty, they still have to kick the ball into the goal. Space-time doesn’t distort to make Drogba’s piss-poor penalty go into the back of the net.

  165. I have rarely been so happy. We fought for every ball like soldiers tonight and still attacked without fear – its really is a wonderful result and fabulous for the team and clubs confidence.

My man of the match was Wilshire. I thought he was magnificent given his age and application. But the rest of the team were wonderful too. Especially young Walcott – this was a stage against a big team when he stood up and was counted..! Many congrats Theo..!! So happy for you and hope you hold down your place son. You deserve it given your attitude tonight.

In the after match interviews both Walcott and Cesc spoke about pressing the high line. So too did wenger. This is where there has been a remarkable change in attitude. Everyone worked their socks off. Just goes to show what we can achieve when the work ethic is right.!

  166. It’s a freudian typo G4E – maybe I was subconsciously thinking ‘wee’ as in little!

  167. My favorite part of the game was the first goal. It was right around the time the Chelsea supporters were singing “Stand up for the Champions.”

  168. Just back from the game. Great day out – Great result. I’m knackered and off to bed!

  169. Paul, that interview pretty much sums up Arsenal football club. What grace and what spirit of friendhip. Awesome!!!!!

  170. Just found out I could of gone to the game tonight, damn this blasted flu!!

  171. Significant result for Arsenal. The young sleeping giants have awoke, something that the rest of the premier league have been dreading. An awakening of a long slumber, and perhaps a new era.

The lack of results against the big teams have been the source of insecurity, doubt and uncertainty. Massive result, psychologically and sexually.

  172. A bit late but Yeeeeeeeeeeeessss

  173. Had to stand in the Chelsea section, tonight was awful, couldn’t celebrate the bloody goals!. I have to say I hope I’m never in the presence of any Chelsea crowd again!!

  174. @ Mongolian Gooner
I too understand the feeling of watching us play at crazy hours and ‘trying’ to be quite, but I live in ‘Gov Housing’ and on weekends police, fire, ambos etc are normally around with sirens wailing so its noisy anyway.
Then there’s the cats but I dont care if they get scared and my girl well she doesnt work so she can deal with it, I work and I still get up for the Mighty Arsenal. and for this game
Err except this game I was soo excited and jumpy that I didnt fall asleep till 3am, then slept in for the K/O at 7am. When I woke up I ran out it was 15 min to go and I wiped my eyes twice at the score!
But me being sooo superstitious I didnt join in to watch the last 15 min. I had seen us 2-0 up and lost or drew before so if we got to 3-1 with me not watching then I wont watch it…when it was over I then watched the recording and wat a scoreline. We really fought HARD for it.
I remember a game in 08 (i think) us v ManUtd and we came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 with RVP beating Gary Nevile for 1-1, and Henry getting the header in injury time. Anyway that game we really worked hard and the 2 goals we scored came from tackling a player hard (rosiky, fab i think) then getting in there and kicking the ball around and standing ground until the ball came out with us and then moved on to score. It is only a win but people will say Chelsea werent on form, but you can only play as good as a team will let you and we didnt give them much.
This should galvanise us now, I also sort of dont mind an early exit from Champs league to Barca, then we can concentrate on EPL (altho Fab shyte will start again).
Ok a good end to the year, my boss is a chelsea fan (and Rangers grrr!) so will be smiling all day tomorrow…
Mon the ARSENALM BY FAR THE GREATEST TEAM, THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN!!!

  175. I don’t care if we get schooled by Barca at the Camp nou, they will not have it easy at the Emirates!!

  176. Great result for all Gunners tonight. Watched the game with my American family deep in the Ozarks. They don’t understand the game, especially my running around every time we scored.
I hope that Dave the Chav cvnt is reading this too.
Happy New Year to all on ACLF

  177. Great Fuckin result! Song was absolutely immense…he was everywhere with interceptions, tackles and clearing headers from crosses…overall it was a very solid performance from everyone…great to see Cesc back and running at full speed as well.

On to Wigan…cannot overlook that one…Come on you Gunners!

  178. Steww: “We dominated them as we’ve done many times before. The difference? We finished some chances and their tactic (big punt upfield) didn’t come off. Should have been 4 or 5 but I’ll settle for three.”

We see this clearly but the doomers want to overhaul the team eventhough it’s always this close. What’s worse is that they call themselves realists.

  179. Thanks Gains, glad I’m not the only one who can see it. It’s football against route 1 every time and it comes down to chances

  180. ‘Taking chances’ that should say.

  181. So simple. Chelsea at virtually full strength (Anelka and Alex) cannot come close to containing Arsenal equivalent (Vermaelen, Ramsey, Diaby just back). The difference? RvP, Cesc and Walcott in that order. RvP is a creative engine, very difficult to mark or predict. I thought Wilshere had a classy game last night. And Djourou.

  182. Very predictable result – in hindsight.

Wonder who will play against Wigan? Chamakh, Arshavin, Squillachi, Denilson, Rosicky, Eboue, Diaby…? Oh how I wish we had some depth ;)

  183. AA might find it difficult to get back into first team action with Walcott in this mood.

  184. I hope Bill learnt the right lesson from yesterday. Attack is as important, if not more important than defence. It’s no coincidence that once we have our most capable attacking players on the pitch in a match against the top sides, we win. This was the first time in 2 years that’s been the case. Quality matters.

Not that we didn’t defend better than we have recently. We restricted the chavs to 1 shot on target. They barely troubled us.

But if like in recent games we couldn’t even score against them, we would still have lost that game.

  185. Djourou made one (1) unsuccessful pass

  186. How proud am I?

Just a fabulous result and match. I’m certain that there’s even more to come from this great squad and I can hardly wait. We need a little focus and commitment tomorrow to beat Wigan but such are the tests we must now expect to pass on the last half of this premiership journey.

Every player did his part and the selection was spot on.

    As I said, just fabulous

    COYG

  187. its just me or i cannot access goonerholic.it say accounted suspended

  188. lordgunner,
Me too having that problem for couple of hours now..

  189. he is not paying the bill :D

  190. What a performance and what a result. The difference was totally about being able to field near enough our strongest team and imposing our own game. In the games were we have lost we have been unable to field our strongest team or impose our game. I may be wrong but we have never lost a game to a Chelsea when rvp has beem playing. Not that the media will give us any credit. Following previous defeats we were subjected to nauseating eulogising of Chelseas performance and how we had been humiliated…bullied…battered…men against boys…and how Terrys performance was ‘Beckenbaueresque’. Well yesterday Chelsea were battered and ‘Audley Harrisonesque’ in their performancs. Bring on United. Onwards and upwards.

  191. Ooooooh to be a goonah!!

Its just 1 result but maybe its the result that changes the mindset of the players to a belief we can win this title?

Djourou showed last night that he needs to be the starter at centrehalf in this team. Kosser did well in his battles against Drogba. Clichy showed 2008 form. Sagna was Sagna, dependable as ever. Is Jackie Boy just 18, really? Cesc just makes us tick. RVP, theres something about him that Chamakh (although hes done really well) doesnt have. Song got the balance right between attack and defense. Does Nasri lose the ball? Theo must have consigned AA23 to the bench more often than not?

Its good when you see the heart of The Arsenal on the pitch. Can we do the same from here on please guys – if so we can win this league……
