City Dimmed By Nasri’s Sparkle In Arsenal Romp

Manchester City 0 – 3 Arsenal

0 – 1 Nasri (21)
0 – 2 Song (66)
0 – 3 Bendtner (88)

Sent off: Boyata (5)
Missed pen: Fabregas (41)

Arsenal leapt into second place following an emphatic margin of victory at Eastlands yesterday afternoon. With City reduced to ten men in the fifth minute, the outcome was rarely in genuine doubt although Arsenal’s patience is being misinterpreted as City’s grit. Post-match Roberto Mancini doubted that his side would have lost had Boyata not been sent off; the reality was that the only evidence was the opening four minutes which suggested chances would have been traded and City were very susceptible to giving the clearer opportunities away.

There is little doubt that the sending off affected the match but as Cesc put it afterwards,

Even if they were 15 and we were 11 we would still have gone on and won

City were architects of their own downfall, more specifically with the width available to him, Mancini decided to play with a narrow midfield containing three defensive midfielders. Abou Diaby failed to regain full fitness and Denilson came in to provide Cesc with even more of a licence to roam that normal.

The hosts though struck the first blow. Tevez found space and drifted past Djourou with too much ease on the right and furrowed towards the byline, cutting back to Silva, his deft flick held by Fabianski in what would be the first of a number of important – and excellent – saves throughout the afternoon.

The host’s defensive weaknesses were exposed minutes later. Fabregas found plenty of space inside the City half, sending Chamakh through towards Joe Hart. Baldrick Boyata failed to assess the situation correctly, opting to send the Moroccan crashing to earth rather than chance the one-on-one, not realising a deficit is easier to cut with eleven players as opposed to ten. Mark Clattenburg had no option but to dismiss the youngster.

City reshuffled – the first of three in the first half – and contained Arsenal for ten minutes before Johan Djourou almost broke the deadlock, his effort clearing the bar when it should have been buried. That miss only mattered for moments; Clichy launched a poor cross into the area, deflected to the relative safety of the right hand side where the ball was fed to Nasri. Weighing his options with the massed ranks in front of him, Arshavin’s short burst into space gave the French international the chance to play a ‘give and go’, executed perfectly before finding himself unmarked seven yards out. The air of inevitability was shortlived as it became reality, Nasri crashing the ball home.

Arsenal took control but City prompted and threatened sporadically. Richards curled an effort wide having made a good run down the right hand side before another turning point in the game. Fabregas was about to weave his way through the area when his progress was rudely interrupted by the leg of Kompany, the Spaniard tumbling for another easy decision for Clattenburg to make. The spot kick though was poor and Joe Hart made a solid, if predictable, save. Fabregas was nowhere near as assertive as he had been against Shaktar with this effort as Samir Nasri saw the third kick by a colleague saved this season.

At half-time, Arsene apparently preached patience. He must have preached something else in Johan Djourou’s ear for the Swiss international came out considerably more confident for the second half. Whilst he had struggled with Tevez, he found Adebayor more to his liking as an opponent.

The former Arsenal player – he is neither a star or a man – may have had opportunities to score but spurned them. The best opportunity of the half’s opening fifteen minutes fell to Adebayor, heading over the bar having outjumped Fabianski. Had he been willing to angle his head downwards, he would have scored but received a fist in his face for his troubles. He was unwilling to do so and missed. That was Fabianski’s only heartstopping moment. Moments earlier he made an outstanding stop from Silva, tipping a shot around the post.

The match was settled just past the hour mark. Arshavin broke down the left, the ball swept across the pitch with Nasri and Fabregas controlling the tempo and angle of attack. The Spaniard threaded a ball into the path of Chamakh, City interceded, the ball rebounding kindly for Song whose powerful strike soared into the top corner. City were beaten and deflated.

Denilson and Nasri both had good opportunities between then and the final whistle to increase the margin of victory before Nicklas Bendtner did so. A City attack was broken down and Nasri kept the resultant clearance in play before feeding Bendtner. The Dane ran across the ball and opened his body to provide a text book finish into the bottom corner, beyond the despairing dive of Hart. A welcome goal for a player finally divesting himself of the shackles of injury.

There was another chance for Fabianski to show his growing confidence, tipping Boateng’s effort over the bar before Sagna almost completed a rout, Hart relieved to see the Frenchman’s shot curl wide.

There was much for both manager’s to take from the game. Mancini for all his bluster will note with concern how quickly his re-organised defence crumbled under pressure. For the first two goals, City had good positional sense and numbers to stop Arsenal. They also had the slow wits of Gareth Barry to thank for not recognising the sublime skills of Nasri and his imagination. Equally, for the second, their back four held a line that was reminscent of George Graham’s Arsenal before it was breached with slow reactions capitalised on. The match was not as close as the City manager, or his apologists, would have you believe.

Wenger has a multitude of headaches, most of them the sort he wishes he had more frequently. Fabianski, along with Nasri, was Man of the Match. There can be no argument with that and the Pole has taken another slow but sure step to proving his critics wrong. There is still much distance to travel on that road but in fairness to him, he is determined to do so. Whether Almunia instantly regains his place remains to be seen, a hint of which might be shown in the Carling Cup this week. If Fabianski is custodian at St James’ Park, it would be a fair assumption to make that Almunia will be back in goal at the weekend.

Equally impressive was Samir Nasri. The consistency he has sometimes missed is beginning to show through, his importance to the team increasing. It puts Wenger in an interesting position as far as his first choice starting line-up is concerned but Nasri is rapidly becoming a player who cannot be omitted.

Second place on goal difference, five points behind Chelsea is no bad position to be in following recent tribulations. Three wins in a week is far more important and creates a momentum which if maintained would see five wins in fourteen days, conducive to a charge towards the top of the table.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. sami was excellent yesterday, his driving runs and now improved goal return bring back memories of bobby….

  2. It occurred to me that when Cesc said we would have won even if it was 15 vs 11, he meant 11 players + Referee + 2 Assistants + 4th official. :D

  3. Agree with WrightGunner about Nasri potentially becoming the new Pires. He is purposeful with the ball, and you can’t argue with a return of seven goals from his last seven games.

Fabianski was also worthy of mention. His 1st-minute save from Silva was crucial, and his fine stop from the same player early in the second half kept us ahead. I was okay with his role in the Adebayor header – he did just enough to put Ade off (not that it takes much). He is growing in front of our eyes with every passing game – Almunia is not getting his starting place back any time soon.

    My thoughts on yesterday:
    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2010/10/25/arsenal-show-steel-to-defeat-10-man-city/

  4. A very good, patient performance!

I wonder if anyone would be asking for a new GK if Fab played like that every week? Fair play to the kid!

And what can you say about Nasri? Just getting better and better this season!

It was great to see our midfield play with patience, and slowly wear City down, I thought Song and Denilson did a great job, especially in the second half.

  5. Did Diaby get injured during warm up or did he not regain fitness? Some reports had him starting which made me think the former.

  6. It will all be a waste if we don’t now beat West Ham, Newcastle & Wolves. Onwards and upwards. Come on Reds

  7. It was a good day at the office yesterday.

Now that Fabianski has started his journey to redemption, I truly hope the masses would get behind him and give him the support he needs. He was fantastic yesterday and it’s actually true to say that he was responsible for changing and keeping the match in our favour with the crucial and excellent saves he made particularly from Silva.

What about Samir Nasri? That boy needs a medal just for his arrogance and decisive play on the pitch – let alone his goal tally so far.

I also like the fact that Vermaelen must be wondering whether he actually has an automatic place when he’s back fit.

I must say, on current form though, I would prefer Rosicky to start ahead of Arshavin. Li’l Mozart is in better form and he is more reliable defensively. Arshavin can be the perfect impact sub until he gains his form. Yes, he does create a fantastic number of assists, but what is the opportunity cost of having him on the pitch and not defending as well?

And what about Chamakh? I don’t think defenders really know what to do with him…the boy is class.

Song has also been given short shrift by those who’ve insisted he does an Obi Mikel and stays the fuck in front of the back 4 – but as someone mentioned yesterday, I don’t think City knew how to deal with Song being the attacking midfielder and Cesc and Denilson playing deeper. Talk about flummoxing the mercenaries.

The headline writers had to quickly re-write their cliched scripts….

  8. What’s that, naga?

  9. “neither a star or a man”… Ouch!

  10. Excellent play by Arsenal.. We will certainly win the prem. the carl, the FA and the Champions…. We now need to convincingly beat Manu, Chelse and Liv… This will shut the mouths of all those so called football pundits who no nothing of football (especially the ex Arsenal players).
PS. does anyone else believe that the commentating on Arsenal TV is Absolutely atrocious

  11. I agree with the choices for man of the match. Nasri and Fabianski were sublime. In fact I thought they were our only decent players for the first (and rather nervy) 18 minutes. How Gullit named Cesc man of hte match only reiterates the pundits’ practice of following “received wisdom/prejudice”.

All in all, a glorious day and with the 0-3 scoreline outdoing my 1-3 prediction – all I could hope for at this point in our season.

  12. Squill needs a mention. When a center back is not noted during a game (save when he scores in the opossition half..) Interesting after the game, Squill went kissing each Arsenal player in the head/ hug. Like a *congratulations* from him. Cesc is the tallisman. Him he is the pointer, spitter in the team. Massive addition by Wenger. Wonder why Wenger never unleashed him earlier.

  13. Come on… spit it out.

  14. @Matt 10.52

I agree with you – the most pleasing aspect of the team effort yesterday was the maturity shown by being patient and wearing City down before licking them to submission.

I suspect that it was nerve racking for a good proportion of fans who were hoping and praying that we kill the game off – but the patience that led to the 2nd and 3rd goals shows a level of maturity that needs to be acknowledged.

  15. Fair play to Fabianski – he’s putting a run of games with no howlers in for the first time and seems to be growing in authority – well done to him and hopefully he will go from strength to strength. It’s the first time a keeper has shown some form for a long, long time so he HAS to keep his place when manuel is back.

Djourou was my only concern yesterday. when people run at him, twisting this way and that he’s too easy to turn.

Other than that, a really good performance and was great to have a clean sheet. Looking better all of a sudden…

  16. The most pleasing aspect was with 4 players on a yellow they showed the maturity not to get a second card.

  17. With Arshavin, If Wenger says he plays, then he play. See how we all are having a big potato re: fabianski.

For a moment yesterday I was worried for ManCity. Like I KNEW they would never score. They actually proved me right…

  18. Well, first of all, congratulations to the lads on a superb win. We needed that. It was heart warming to see our team who have in recent years adopted a chronic habit of confirming my worst fears come up with some sort of performance to prove me wrong. Its a nice and a rare change.

It was 10 against 11 for 90 minutes lets not forget that and we need to be wary of the fact that city created a lot of chances. Our team organization still needs tightening, but the clean sheet was a breath of fresh air.

I do hope we kick on and it will be interesting to see where the team goes from here. The flaws are still evident and There is still a lot of work to be done but lets hope our lads will knuckle down and finally learn from past mistakes because our current lot has delivered more false dawns than the number of grey hairs on arsene’s head.

    To Newcastle then gooners…

    Cheers all!

  19. Great game against a strong team. I don’t doubt the quality of the mancity players even when down to ten men. Almost lost my voice after the first goal. Already looking forward to Wednesday. Pity the teams mancity are to meet now, they must be in a foul mood. De Jong may just break somebody’s leg – again!

  20. Limparassist!

You are being too cruel to me, mate.

  21. @The Troof

Many people have commented on the quality of the Arsenal video commentary – with negativity being the order of the day on numerous occasions.

However, the live radio commentary on ATVO during the actual game by Dan Roebuck is actually very good – if he can cut down on reading e-mails during the game (which in fairness, he only reads when things quiten down on the pitch). But Roebuck’s commentary is very good – and I usually listen to it at the same time as watching the muted Sky feed on TV. The internet feed for ATVO radio is about 10 seconds later than the live video feed on Sky, so I just pause the video feed until they’re synchronized.

  22. Where is Jim? he set us off nicely in yesterdays blog…

Our squad is good but not good enough to beat top teams. Don’t forget Arsenal’s ambition is just a CL spot, which is enough to rake in good revenues without heavy investments. It looks like 4th again this season. Without Liverpool as a contender, the 4th place is between us and Spurs. Hope we can make it. Trophies? Let’s get real. We won’t win any.

  23. Djourou looked a little rusty, but the guy has got pace. I think it was his decision-making that let him down. It was his decision to lunge at Tevez towards the start of the game that let him through on the left. He tries to read in to a player’s movement a little too much and gets sent the wrong way and ends up twisting and turning. It’ll come back to him. He’s just come back from a long time off – give him a chance. At the end of the day, thanks to the team’s overall defensive efforts (kudos to Fabianski in particular) we kept an away clean sheet – something that we’ve not had for about 10 months!

  24. Patience ? Well yes Yogi, but it could have been a different story due to some poor defending in the first half.

However! A bloody good win is a bloody good win.

    Bring ‘em on.

  25. Fantastic write up as usual, although I made a fuller mention of it on my blog that Cesc did NOT mean that when he made the 15 v 11 statement. It is clearly being misinterpreted in my opinion
    http://bigfourza.com/blog/2010/10/cesc-misquoted-nothing-new/

  26. To those Arsenal fans who don,t want Alex Song to push upfield and drive the team on ,well they now have there answer ,Song,s goal and Arsenal,s second was crucial as 1-0 to Arsenal with 10 or so minutes left would have been a real nail biter ,given the Gunners recent history of throwing away all three points, definitely man of the match,Alex .

  27. Consols, I found that ad so hilarious yesterday I’ve gone and bought one for the missus. I’m not quite sure how she’ll react to it.

  28. Great performance from the lads. Maturity, patience and guile won it for us, not the fact that they had someone sent off early. When you are a team who are all about sitting back and soaking up pressure, going down to 10 men could have been what they needed to make sure they stayed tight, but they did the opposite. They tried to attack – fair play to them, but we were the better, more dangerous team.

Fabianksi was awesome. As was Nasri.

Keeping a clean sheet is great for the defence’s confidence, and the fact that we’ve been keeping relatively tight at the back without our rock TV5 is a massive boost. I must say i was a bit worried about having to play without TV5 and Koscielny, but Skilly and Big Johan have been pretty damn solid. Another headach for Le Boss..

We’ve got an amazingly adaptable squad now, something none of the other title challengers have. Let’s see how they all get on when the inevitable injuries start to hit…

    Up the Arse!!

  29. chamack
    12 games
    6 goals
    4 assists
    6 penalties won
4 red cards given for fouls on him
work rate:his reward is in heaven.
    distance covered:unlimited

  30. Great win, played with class and intelligence from start to finish. A bit shaky in defence at times but you would expect that naturally against a team that has spent so much money. Think of it as when Arsenal is down to 10 men at home… we more often than not perform quite well, it galvanizes us, and I can’t recall a time when we have had a sending off and not gone on to score.

So keeping City at bay in their own back yard is very pleasing. Thanks to Fabianski and co, its a welcomed clean sheet as well as a victory on the road against a top team. I agree on Squillaci, I can’t remember anything so he must have been sound at the back. He is proving a really calming influence in defence.

  31. I’m glad to see you’ve got your man-pants on, Yogi, and that you’re ready to face up to the harsh reality that we stuffed Man City on their own patch. To attribute the win to the red card (as the man-pantless Mancini has done) is the best example you will see of putting the cart before the horse. The red card was a symptom of Arsenal’s superiority, not the cause. In fact, the red card was a benefit to City, as in the hands of Mark Clattenburg it represented a license for their untalented midfield bruisers to foul our players with impunity.

  32. Us winning is not a rare change. We’re 2nd in the league. Liverpool beating Blackburn was a rare change. We beat the Ukranian Champions 5-1 midweek, Birmingham a few days before that, and now we beat Money City. You can only beat what gets put in front of you and that’s what we’re doing, and if we keep doing it we’ll be winning a trophy for you and Jim before summertime. And you won’t fucking deserve it.

  33. Consol, I think the ‘patience’ thing was a tongue-in-cheek statement from Yogi.

  34. Excellent three points and the muted praise of Arsenal in the press just goes to show how myopic they are. Mancini is rancin- Nasri and Arshavin’s one split a defence that had everyone back- including Barry (the joke that he is) tracking back and failing to do so miserably. Saying that they woud have won with 11 v 11 is just pathetic!
The left hand side again was our weak point in the game. I do not think Djourou is a left legged (is he?) but he does not appear comfortable playing on the left hand side of defence- like TVCinq The Verminator. But for now he is the 4th choice centre back and so far has done ever so well. He got caught out by Tevez and Richards largely because he timing was off and he got too close to Tevez in particular who spun around him. His missed tackle on Richards was again down to poor judgement which will surely improve with time. But overall our defence now looks a lot more comfortable than last season.
Arshavin though needs to be benched and roles reversed with Rosicky. He is just not fit enough- yesterday he was knackered and on occasions where he found himself one on one with defenders he couldnt take em to the cleaners like we know he can. His assist was sublime but Rosicky is capable of the same and would have done so when he gave Deni a superb ball that was just taken away at the nick of time.
Nasri- superb what a player! Does he ever loose the ball- the little mind seems to anticipate what the defender will do and he is always a step ahead.
Cesc had an ok game- not great, he is still rusty but his class is such that even an ok game from him is a universe apart from other mere mortals.
Fabiansky- good on your lad for shutting Le groan moaners up- Almunia at this rate will warm the bench for quite sometime!
Sagna had a great game- one game saving tackle when Richards turned in Djourou inside out was just brilliant! I think though attacking wise Eboue would have taken Shitty to the cleaners- we seem to have the best two right backs in the premiership!
Clichy had an average game- exposed and caught out of position leaving Djourou under pressure. Though finally he did get some help from Arshavin. Full of running but still has to learn to make the right decision- instead of kicking the ball out after outpacing Richards he tried to be cute and got muscled out leading to a dangerous moment. Such mistakes can be costly!
Squilly- great game, composed, calm, collected- I cannot recall a mistake- an absolute monster!

  35. When you work hard for a win, and you win, that’s all. I wonder. ManC are justifiably third today, a top four team no doubt and some strong players. Arsenal are second. We beat them, away. Did we not deserve to beat them, as Mancini says? Were our defects greater than our attributes over 90 minutes? Was it the man-advantage? Or were we just better (without the details)? I defy anyone to show we were not ‘just better’, and I think the scoreline suggests this, bearing in mind ManC saved a penalty. i also think they played and foguth very well with 10 men. We can win this thing.

Critical is good, nothing is 100%, but so far so good. We are about where we belong and we must fight our way to the very top now.

  36. A very nice win, no less than I expected. I have to admit being a little surprised with how well City played. Despite all the recent spending, I’d never taken them seriously as title contenders. That’s no longer the case for me so maybe I’ll start watching them a bit more…

That De Jong, although a good player, is likely to permanently main someone if he’s not reined in. The guy has the constitution and attitude of a spanish fighting bull (toro bravos?).

  37. Patatas bravas?

De Jong is rubbish and dangerous.

  38. arsenalist – amazing stats on chamakh

as matter of interest what were the other red cards? my memory fails me

  39. “The red card was a symptom of Arsenal’s superiority, not the cause”

Bang on. A fact which most folks commenting on the game seem to have conveniently ignored…including that chump at the Guardian who claimed poor ickle Man City were “unlucky” (probably just pissed ‘cos we spoiled his fantasy headlines by comprehensively beating them on their own turf). Luck had f*ck all to do with it. Maybe we were a bit shaky defensively in the first half….but lest we forget this is against a team assembled at a cost of 200 million squillion zillion quid or whatever it was. I thought it was a stunning performance…especially in the 2nd half. That was your “winning mentality” right there.

    COYG!!

  40. Loose = loose fitting trousers

Lose = the opposite of win

  41. de Jong would be better suited to UFC. He wouldn’t look out of place.
How he managed to play 93 minutes yesterday without a booking is a testament to how 1) the referee is blind to most of his “tackles” and 2) that the referee almost regrets sending someone off by refusing to book any more of their players, no matter what they do – if it’s a booking, it’s a booking.

  42. You know Song’s heart celebration? I thought maybe it was for his family… but it turns out he picked up a sponsorship deal at preseason training camp. He sponsors these Austrian hotels: http://www.naturidyll.com/en-index.htm

  43. LimparAssist,

Lets hope so. I will be the happiest person in the world if we win a trophy at the end of the season, even if as you say I dont “deserve it”.

By the way its always a joy to see your inexhaustible enthusiasm, carry on mate!

    Cheers!

  44. LA, that made me LOL.

  45. Loved the away support singing “what a waste of money”.

@Romford Pele, best stat of the league… Bendtner scores a goal every 16 minutes.

  46. Posted this earlier but bears repeating:
The 2nd half performance yesterday was as mature and composed as I’ve ever seen this team play. No panic, no desperation. Simply masterful Wengerball by a team that was assured and self-confident. A sibling and I were on the phone and I had opined that Wenger during the break simply needed to remind the players of our technical superiority aided by a one-man advantage. The tactical change of allowing Song to roam and take advantage of Oil City’s focus on Cesc was a master stroke. He was rampant. With Fabianski and the defenders determined to not blot our clean sheet, it was a second half of men against boys.
To quote a prescient advocate of this team, when very few saw the quality and depth of this new team built by Wenger , we were better by a “country mile.”

  47. De jong is a relic of a footballer- the booking on Cesc was ridiculous (was it de jong he collided with?) , he was actually fouled and yet got the card. And the nearndethal that is De jong escapes scot free!
Mancini has obviously looked Chelsea and decided that the easiest way win the PL is to replicate the physicality of the Chavs and bully teams to submission.
Interesting to note though we played them off the park- same as Blackpool did, people keep saying the sign of a good team is that play poorly and win. Man cityagainst Blackpool only because Blackpool were denied a certain goal and give and city benefitted from an offside goal. Man city will be found out especially when injuries hit the likes of silva

  48. MOTM – our manager!

  49. Great 3 points yesterday.

I actually thought we struggled in the 1st half and a niggling part of me thought we would cock it up, we certainly was not in control of the game. Especially after the pen. Once the 2nd goal went in we looked more assured and eventually dominated the game.

Fabianski MotM for me. He made important saves at crucial times, and more encouragingly (for me) looked very assured, collected every cross he came for (bar one), and made good decisions in general. Nasri a close 2nd, and I do think he will end the season as our most influential player.

Djourou looked rusty in the 1st half, but much better in the 2nd. AA was worrying crap, but did what he always manages to do and still came up with an assist. Denilson was OK, but Diaby and Wilshere offer so much more. He kept things ticking over though. Chamakh was again excellent and never gave the City defenders a moments rest.

  50. naga … u wouldn’t deserve it, i second that

  51. I find the goalkeeping dilemma very interesting now. Who will play in the Carling Cup ??

  52. As much as I was a critic of Fabianski pre season his performces currently merit his status as No1. Tech9 should start in the CC, and then drop to 3rd choice when Almunia is fully fit.

  53. @chrisgoona Szczesny, Eboue, Koscielny, Miquel, Gibbs, Denilson, Lansbury, Rosicky, JET, Walcott, Bendtner

  54. Alex Song completed more passes than City’s midfield three in yesterday’s game at the Middle Eastlands. He completed 78 passes, they completed 76 between them

  55. Even though they had ten men that is a pretty amazing stat.

  56. Ole, that is a stunning stat. Really highlights how important a player he was for us yesterday.

  57. goonerandy,

It’s an amazing stat. He also got more tackles in than any of them. He also scored a goal.

I’m amazed he’s not getting the recognition his performance deserved

  58. You could tell from watching it that he had a good game, but the stats that back it up just make it even more impressive. Incredible performance from the CDM! ;)

  59. CDM / CM / AM / playmaker… !!

I find it more amazing that Arsenal and Wenger don’t get more credit for being as brave as we have done in playing attacking stylish football, in an age of where bruisers and defensive minded teams succeed and the refs allow them to.

Song is perceived as your average DM but is allowed the freedom to roam and score. Credit must be given to the manager who has created a team with the fluency to interchange various positions over the course of the 90mins.

  60. Ole – True. I must admit, I didn’t really notice him much during the game but thought he had a decent game anyway. Did not do much wrong.

  61. Whar really pisses me off is this automatic assumption that city players are top top class, and they will win the league. Fuck off. De Jong is a thug. YaYa Toure is nothing special, a water carrier in the midfield. Johnson/Milner ? – pleaseee… yes.. they are good players.. but hyped up by the english media. Tevez is their only player I would take in the arsenal squad… the only one.. the rest can fuck off.

As usual we have been brainwashed by a load of arsehole hacks into believing that overbloated expenditure of £££££££ means success. And what was McClintock doing on Talk Shite radio this morning saying that arsene needs to spend…. WTF ?! We need all of our best players back and free from injury ffs.

  62. I agree with Muppet. Every alphabet, every comma. I agree with Muppet

  63. Muppet @ 1:14pm,
Agree with you like Ole @ 1:16pm…

  64. some amazing delusional denial on here. we had 10 men from 4th minute ( could have been 2 – 0 up at that point) ref bottled sending song and the barca wannabee off in the first half, your keeper was MOM (as voted by gooners on your own website) we lost tev and yaya to injuries as well. last 4 results in this fixture i think are 3-0 / 4-2 / 3-0 / 0-3 so that OBVIOUSLY makes you title contenders doesn’t it ? I’m so glad that we don’t have arsenal disease at my club, the diving, whining to the ref and imaginary card waving from your ‘purveyors of pure football’ made me almost lose my lunch. You keep that in your team and we’ll keep our ‘ruing english football’ . We’ll be happy, you’ll have another 5 years of winning fek all.

  65. In fairness Joe Hart is a quality keeper – and David Silva is top quality too.

The rest may not be world class but theyre better than most

  66. Me too.

‘Conventional wisdom’ is neither conventional nor wise. It’s just the same thing being repeated over and over again by lazy people for lazy people.

Avaris? let me know how that goes!

  67. Quality is all that counts, not valuation. Nasri, Song, Vermaelen, Sagna, Cesc,… all of truly amazing quality purchased at smaller fees than that of Citeh’s overpaid players.

De Jong was purchased for how much!?? You would have to pay us to get let that thug loose at the Emirates. David Silva is a decent player, technically he looks good – but you would expect that with his transfer fee.

Adebayor = money hungry Arsenal reject. Tevez = revenge seeking ex United. Toure = quitter. Leaves Arsenal for money and hatred of Gallas. Yaya = At one of the best clubs in Europe, but leaves for City (Money basically!) Milner = left the club he supports for money. Same too with Barry.

How can you support such players… and how can you want a team full of such players… I know they are 4th in the table, something they never dreamed about before being taken over, but where is the realism. Do any of their supporters agree with their clubs behavior? Transfer policy, and wage policy?

  68. Romford Pele,

True true. I may have been a bit over the top. But it is a reaction to the over the top evaluations and assessments of each £20 million player that is bought in this country. Apparently Balotelli is better than Pele – already. Get my drift ? He may well become a fantastic striker – and for the sake of the premier league – it is a good news – but he’s done nothing so far.

And meanwhile… we have Vermaelen, Ramsey, VP all missing whilst Fab/Bendtner/Walcott have not even featured at all in this campaign so far.

  69. City have a bunch on mercanary players. With time I have no doubt they they will establish themselves as a force in the lge, much as Chelsea did. I don’t really care what they do though, they can’t have all the good players and we are good enough to beat anybody.

Does their emergance make things harder for us? Yes.
Does their emergance make our team any worse? No.

    We will be fine.

  70. Criticisms of Song and Denilson in general come from the habitual doomers who have hated for so long that all they do is watch arsenal games concentrating on the mistakes made rather than focusing on the players contribution. They would rather dwell on the two misplaced passes that Song made and ignore the 74 successful passes made/goal scored. Their reaction to Deni/Song is almost a reflex action! So sad!

  71. Man City have a good squad. They have the youngest squad in the league now. I am not surprised that the media don’t even realise that’s the case. They started with a Back 4 of Richards-Kompany-Boyata-Boateng. Very young back 4.
Arsenal’s kids are dismissed as young (despite being very experienced) while Man City start with kids and nobody even notices. They’re expected to be great just because they cost £200M.

  72. Richards is a monster.

  73. Your right(eous) Muppet. You didn’t even mention the leaden Barry either. That’s another reason the victory was so important..not just for Arsenal….but because it showed up a lot of the weak thinking and lame hype for what is. And it shows that the Arsenal way is working on the pitch. Which is ultimately a victory for football. I get the feeling that yesterday’s result pissed on a lot of people’s parade…the result didn’t go according to plan.

  74. Song and Denilson were both outstanding. Song did take 4 or 5 games to get going this season, and had his critics for roaming forward and getting caught out, but now hes looking a complete midfielder adding another dimension to his game. I don’t think there is a midfielder in our team who is told to do a single job over the whole game.

It is wonderful to watch, and this team in full flow is the best in the World. Not a Barcelona relying on Messi … another 2 goals this weekend!!

  75. Richards impressed me going forward. A real handful.

  76. Harry Flowers,

Well said. Yes… I watched.. with mounting fury, Sean Custis of the Screws and some other hack predict a win for City on the Hacks Suffocatory yesterday; Custis declared that the City squad was now equal to that of the mancs. Now, I’m no lover of the mancs, and I can see the arguments that they are in decline, but when you have won the premiership 3 times in a row, won the champions league and were runners up, then you can start talking about equality.

The tabloids must think we are all stupid.

  77. Chris – To be fair Xavi and Iniesta are pretty decent as well.

  78. goonerandy,

I think Chris’ point is that despite the fact that they do have a good team of players, they do rely on Messi for the finishing. We’ve had 7 different scorers (I think) in our last 3 games.

  79. goonerandy,

Xavi and Iniesta are good players but the difference is They dont have as varying movement as Arsenal.. The front 6 in our lineup can interchange positions with ease. And sometimes both the full-backs join in this.. Such a variation isn’t present in the Barcaloanus setup..

  80. It is true that Xavi and Iniesta do not get their share of goals. Criminal really for players with their quality. I would imagine Villa will get quite a few over the season though.

We are spreading the goal around nicely. Nasri and Cesc are both midfielders who should get 10+ goal at least. AA will always score a good number regardless of his performences. Bendtner has a good games to goal ratio, and Chmakh seems like he will get his fair share too.

Obviously Wellington is going to turn up in Jan and get 30+ goals as well ;)

  81. How utterly crucial was Denilson yesterday? Can’t be over emphasised. Tackling, keeping possession, attacking and linking defence and midfield. Hard to dispossess and so jealous of the ball when the opposition tried to take it from him.
We have a few players like him now and this season the ludicrous injuries will hurt us less because of this.
One other thing. Chamack is so strong and hard to dispossess. In a bizarre way RVP’s injury combined with the Danes abuse of Big Nic has helped him settle as he is surely playing more games than he otherwise would. What a buy.

  82. Heh, I forgot RvP.

  83. re AA23 – i have come to the conclusion that we shouldn’t judge him as a winger/wide midfielder or in fact even as a midfielder. He is our #10 – a striker, playing in the hole. However the whole he plays in starts out wide and wobbles into the box in a kind of meandering fashion. AA23 is claiming goals and assists at the rate of a striker/ #10. Hes our Bergkamp for his team. Or at least a little bit Bergy and a little bit Pires. While he drifts out of games, and sometimes his flicks dont come off and his one touch passes might not work all the time, he sees things early and is a dangerous player. So while Nasri and Cesc will have a higher workrate AA23 does do his bit defensively every now and then. He will also be decisive in the final third where some other players will dally more than he does.

We will see games from AA23 where everything he does comes off and he will look godlike on the pitch – on his day he can be peerless.

So keep ticking over Andrei because i can see a run of 10 or so games where you will be unplayable

  84. Oh how i remember the weeping and wailing on here when that one season wonder Greedybayor was sold.Since he left us his career has gone down the pan.

  85. Steww – He was OK, but the least effective of our 3 central midfielders. I do agree about Chamakh though; he really is a good player, and I think Arsne has a dilema when RvP is fit because Chamakh’s form means that if fit, he must start.

Nasri on the left, with Chamakh and RvP rotating on the right and through the centre? It is all fluid with our front 3 anyway to be honest so it makes little difference I suppose.

  86. Xavi & Iniesta are top quality, but they’re also cunts.

We’ve got a more adaptable and flexible team for sure, with the likes of Wilshere being able to play across the whole midfield, Nasri also, Theo up front or wings, Vela up front or wing, same as NB52, Eboue, Diaby, Song, Rosicky etc etc – all interchageable and so fluid in their movement, it’s like modern total football – even TV5 can burst forward and score some sublime goals…

I feel privileged to be an Arsenal supporter – trophies or no trophies.

  87. Man City need 3 players to do what Arsenal do with 1 player. No wonder we beat them 3 nil.

  88. Oh yeah, those Song stats are pretty amazing too. Cheers for that Ole. How much did Alex cost us btw? 70 mil+?

  89. steww,
Agree with you regarding Chamakh. Injuries to Big Nic and RvP has been a blessing in disguise for Chamakh. He has settled in very well and most of my midfielders are having a gr8 understanding with him.

    DeiseGooner,
you assessment of AA23 is what I think about it.. And if you watch closely, when we defend, one of the 3 central midfielders drift towards the left to help out Clichy. They haven’t perfected it yet but it was very clear yesterday, especially in the 2nd half where either Deni or Song would be their helping Clichy..

  90. The game would have been very different if Fabianski had not made an excellent stop inside 90 seconds. Props to him.

  91. Watch the game again Andy. I find when it’s live I’m too tense to really judge. In the cold light of the next day you cannot fail to see the enormous contribution Deni made.

  92. We seem to have lots on players on the same wavelength. Specifically I am thinking of Cesc/Chamakh and Wilshere/AA. Nasri appears to be on everybodies wavelength.

  93. Steww – yeah, you could well be right mate. I must admit, he is not one of my favorite players in the squad, but so far this season he has been very effective. I do prefer to see Diaby or Wilshere in the side, but he does look like he has made some progress this season.

  94. goonerandy at 2:23 pm,

Agree.. Fabianski’s reflex save in the 2nd minute of the match set the tone giving confidence to the squad..

  95. Fabianski – making crucial saves and crucial times – keeping it 0-0 and then 1-0 to us. Making saves when the game is won at 2-0 and 3-0 thus getting clean sheet. Making decisions to come for the ball and either catching, punching or putting off the attacker.

Long may it continue. i hope he doesn’t let his head drop again they way he did last season.

  96. Fabianski’s heroics yesterday has been recognized with a deserved MotM on the dotCom.

Arsène Wenger’s side faced Manchester City at Eastlands in the Premier League on Sunday. The game finished 3-0 and after the match we asked fans to vote for their star performer.

They voted in their thousands on Arsenal.com and selected Lukasz Fabianski as their Man of the Match.

The goalkeeper made a number of vital saves as he kept Arsenal’s first clean sheet away from home this season, receiving 49 per cent of the fans’ votes in our poll.

Samir Nasri finished second with 35 per cent with Marouane Chamakh and Alex Song finished third with five per cent of the vote each.

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/man-of-the-match-against-man-city-fabianski

  97. ha ha ha ha
    http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,26691,13862_6467160,00.html

gotta love manic fans given a mic when watchin a match

  98. Just checked the picture gallery for this game on the official site. Picture 14 clearly shows how much the 2nd goal meant ( http://www.arsenal.com/assets/_files/scaled/498×333/oct_10/zp_14_Song-goal-5-101024MAFC_1692.jpg?ic=31b886T ).

But I’m disappointed. There isn’t a single pic of the MotM.. I wonder if there is a pic somewhere when he made the first save in the 2nd minute..

  99. Camera men were still probably getting settled it was that early in the game.

  100. Great game yesterday. Scoring 3 after a mid week CL game and keeping a clean sheet. Could not be better.

Fabianski was excellent. Hopefully whatever demons filled him last year have been exorcised. So far he has been a world class GK. Can not see Almunia moving back ahead of him when he is in this form. Nasri and Song both excellent yesterday. Now that we are getting healthier we should win several games in a row and hopefully catch the Chavs by Christmas. Consistency will be the key ingredient to breaking our trophy drought. Agree with Ole @ 10:56.

  101. goonerandy,
I guess.. But that save would make a great wallpaper..

  102. agree with you DeiseGooner, after halftime, i don’t know if anyone noticed, Denilson & Song were were given the job covering the left side of midfield.

  103. Limestonegunner

Ole made a great point about Song, and I agree with Muppet’s general assessment that the cost of ManCity’s players has clouded any rational assessment of that squad. However, they are a pretty strong side that probably will make top 4, and I think Kompany, Silva, Tevez and Hart are very good players.

As far as the CC, I think Tech9 should start and Fabianski continues to be #1 as the in form player. I think it would be very hard for him to sit now that he has played well.
With players coming back, there is going to be a selection nightmare–where will Walcott, Bendtner, Koscielny fit in? Wilshere when he is back for suspension? When Vermaelen and RvP are fit in a few more weeks? I think Nasri and Wilshere have been two of our best players so far this season. Walcott had a fantastic start and will be desperate to get games to return to that amazing form.

  104. Bingo! Indian gooner..

  105. I would like to apologize for mentioning the word… Barcelona… I didn’t mean for it to lead to such insults. We all know they are absolute cunts, but I had no better comparison to make than with a team that purely relies on 1 player. Even Liverpool are better than that, they rely on 2 at least!

Lukasz fully deserved his MOTM. Great display, but hopefully in the next few games we won’t have to be relying on him or whoever is between the sticks.

  106. Limestonegunner

Those are great problems to have. The squad depth will be the key to this being a multiple trophy winning season. The only issues I see is if Fabianski can keep up his confidence when an inevitable error occurs and whether Vermaelen can get match fit to bolter our defense–Djourou has some great qualities but has been exposed–maybe he just needs a run of games to get more experience reading where to position himself.

Otherwise, goals are going to come from all over. A great dynamic is being forged by the squad in the absence of some key players. That is going to pay dividends by the end of the season.

  107. team for the cup game

    Chesney
    Eboue Djourou Kos Gibbs
    Lansbury Denilson Jack
    Theo B52 Rosicky

  108. Deise,
Jack is suspended for the next 2 games..

  109. Jack is suspended DG, I’d play Vela over him, Rosicky as the playmaker, & we are ready to go! Although Theo, Bendy & Vela might put too much pressure on our MF to defend.

  110. Team for Wed:

    Tech9

    Eboue
    Kos
    Djourou
    Gibbs

    Denilson
    Diaby/Cesc
    Rosicky

    Theo
    Bendtner
    Vela

  111. oh so he is

    this then

    Chesney
    Eboue Djourou Kos Gibbs
    Lansbury Denilson Rosicky
    Theo B52 Vela

id like to see JET get a run out too

  112. ‘Arsenal patience misinterpreted as City grit’ – rarely have I read a truer word. Why is it that journalists and commentators are so desperate to find some ‘Dunkirk spirit’ where none actually exists? Maybe if we’d won 6-0 (and we might if the pen had gone in) we would have got the praise we deserved.
Without any left footed players in their back line City were an accident waiting to happen and the accident happened twice when right footed players committed fouls by going across the ball carrier and either got sent off or conceded a pen. City’s team is selected on the basis of marketing requirements rather than football and they got what they deserved.

  113. Those CC teams are all still pretty strong! In seasons past, our CC teams were looking a lot weaker than that, injuries obviously having an impact.

Great to see Bendtner finish so naturally last night, especially considering he’s just returned. He’s the kind of player who’s confidence will play a huge part in his career now – with Chamakh in the way for that ‘big man’ role up front. He obviously believes in himself, and coming on to score like that will have done him wonders.

    so is Koscielny back?

  114. I think City did show a fair bit of grit. They still looked a goal threat for much of the first half, and at times we struggled to contain them. We were not in control of the game as we would like to be against ten men. Credit where it is due I think.

Once the 2nd goal went in we took full control of the game. We can’t say on one hand that our keeper was man of the match, and then proclaim that city were not a threat. I was impressed with them (as a team) to be honest.

  115. I was impressed too goonerandy. I liked the way they came out and attacked rather than shutting up shop – which i was expecting them to do with 11 men to be honest…

  116. cup team is strong but all are 2nd choice more or less – its just that the policy of playing the youngsters has now borne some fruit and we are used to seeing the players in the first team that we no longer have many surprise inclusions

theres still 6 players under 22 in the team i named

  117. Bendtner’s finish was excellent. His 1st touch was all important, and gave him his chance. He could have easily taken himself too far wide to get a decent shot away.

  118. Citeh have scored 12 goals in PL, so I seriously doubt they would have put one in with 11 one the pitch. Wenger reminded everyone that we were down a man against Sunderland as well and I venture we have good record being a man down since we are always reminded of our horrible red card record.
This was a bashing and the league has taken notice.
Our next “big” game is against utd in Dec 18 so I figure we will be at least 3 points behind the chavs at that juncture.

  119. True Deisegooner – if that’s nto proof of our progression in the last few years, then what is? A trophy i guess, but i’m not fussed if we don’t win anything for a while. As long as i get to watch Project Wenger week in week out.

  120. I can’t wait for Wellington Silva to join the Arsenal team full time- this kid is somtheing special

  121. He is going to have to be, to get a game.

  122. Yeah Wellington Silva looks awesome. It’ll be interesting to see how he adapts to the Prem. if he can do a Hernandez then he’ll be giving Wenger even more selection headaches…

  123. He looks mobile enough to fill one of the wide slots. If Vela does not sort himself out, he may find that his Arsenal career end with the arrival of Silva.

  124. I think Vela’s been pretty decent this year. He’s not a winger. When he’s played as a striker, he’s scored in every game (i think). He’s just going to have to wait for opportunities like the CC to prove to Wenger that he should be higher up the pecking order. Silva should give us options all across the front line though, seems to be full of flair and creativity…

  125. Goonerandy.
I was in Germany a few years ago, but am back in N.London now.

  126. I feel for Vela- I dont think he has been done any favours playing out front, I think his best position is on the wing or playing behind the striker coming in from deep- however he played really well at the world cup until he got injured. The jaunts to play in Mexico’s games also dont help. the boy obviously has talen- but he needs to step up and stake a claim. It’s not all about talent- Aliadiere a was massive talent- maybe Vela lacks the je ne sais quoi to make it to the very top! I hope not as I like the kid- and he did look pretty good in the reserve game against the Hammers, but competition for places is hotting up and it’s upto him to convince the manager to pick him !

  127. I don’t think Diaby has been OK since that kick? This is speculation, but in the week after the Bolton game, listening to AW, it sounded like the staff were concerned. What they did say was that they had no idea how long he would be out for, which was worrying. So, it was a surprise to see him play against West Brom, but not a surprise to see him have a tricky/hesitant game.
As Vince wrote, the combination of Denilson and Wilshere against the Sp*ds was a highlight. With worries about Diaby’s fitness, like many I wanted to see Denilson start away against $iteh. A game worth watching again.

  128. Delia-----Block 112

What a funny lot we are. Yesterday morning’s posts were full of the doubters . Now there is universal praise for a fine performance. Have faith my friends . Having watched AFC for over 55 years , these days I go with the flow. Like all the best fairy stories , this one will have a happy ending.
Roll on Wednesday, AW will be putting out a really strong line-up, mark my words!
    COYRS

  129. Delia you will find the usual posters here never waiver never doubt never loose faith, never are doomers, never been glory hunters, just gold old salt of the earth hardcore Arsenalistas!

  130. “Baldrick” Boyata hahahaha….

  131. From Goal .com:

“But, whatever City produced, Arsenal seemed comfortable enough in defence, a marked change from the first half, to contain the home side, and had more than enough chances to score a third and did with just minutes remaining… a convincing win for the Londoners.”

  132. Fàbregas just confirmed @maddy’s post at 11:19.

I never said we would beat city with 15 men, i said that even if they were 15 players, we´d have still try to go for the victory as usual. Once again you see that people read things and understand things the way that will work better for them….

  133. Let’s not get carried away. Mancity has got good players who haven’t yet molded into a winning team. But they are tough and some very experienced. Which makes it a pleasure beating them. To dismiss city as a useless bunch of losers diminishes what our boys did yesterday. They beat a good team because they were better!

  134. Kenyan Gunner,

Hold on a minute…. if we had lost that game yesterday the headlines would have been loud and clear:

    i) The youth project at Arsenal has failed

ii) Arsenal need to spend at least £100 million

iii) Arsenal need a goalkeeper, a top class centre back, another quality midfielder alongside Fabregas anda striker.

iv) Arsenal have a soft centre

    v) Arsenal don’t like it up’em

vi) City will win the league

vii) City will win the CL

viii) City will be the world champions

    ix) Mancini is a genius

  135. Muppet, Mancini is a good coach with a good bunch of players and we beat him. In my reckoning that means we are better. As for the press let them talk that’s how they earn their bread and butter. More often than not they speak shit!

  136. A R S E N A L

  137. Kenyan Gunner,

Agreed. I also agree in not getting carried away. Too often we have become unstuck in the latter stages of the season. Fingers crossed.

  138. Mancini said that City wouldve “won” if they had 11 men.

Here is the problem with such a stupid comment. That would mean that the player wouldnt have made that tackle and the chances are that Arsenal wouldve been up a goal. Who knows what happens from that point onwards.

I hate when people just cannot give the credit where it is due. I also dont remember anyone sympathizing with us when Sunderland go the draw when we were down a man.

  139. City have not been impressive this season- they have struggled to win games and have had a large dose of good fortunate ala Blackpool. I see them faltering and once Tevez is out for a spell watch them flounder. We have had a pretty tough start to the season, Liverpool, Blackburn, Sunderland, Chelsea, City away and we are second in the league without the services of RVP,TVCinq-Verminator, Bendy, Walcott,Cesc for a while, Diabby on and off . We will suprise a few people this season!

  140. Muppet, I think the difference in other season was a matter of maturity along with a host of injuries. I do believe this team has turned the corner now.

There is a something different, a discipline, hunger and sense confidence that isnt up and down with wins and losses. I believe in prior seasons the Chelsea match and WBA wouldve taken a longer time to over.

I am feeling so very good!

    ARSENAL!!!

  141. I’m intrigued by the suggestion that Man City were unlucky yesterday.

Were they unlucky to come up against a far better team?

Were they unlucky that Boyata committed a professional foul to prevent a certain goal, adjudging (probably rightly) that his team would have no chance if they gave Arsenal such an early lead?

Were they unlucky that, as the rules of the game demand, Boyata was sent off for that professional foul?

Were they unlucky that the referee allowed them to commit foul after foul without giving any yellow cards?

Were they unlucky that the referee tried to paralyse our midfield by booking them all without any reason?

Were they unlucky that Djourou missed an open goal that my grandmother would have scored?

Were they unlucky that Fabregas missed a penalty?

  142. Maybe $iteh would drawn that game if Mancini the Joker had not played three differnt CB pairs before Arsenal scored! (According to Zonalmarking).
    But, I doubt it.

“No reason to get excited,” the thief he kindly spoke,
“There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.

“But you and I, we’ve been through that, and this is not our fate
“So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late.”

  143. No Pol they were unlucky because the media made them the favourites to win this game and show The Arsenal the error of their ways in trying to win with prudent spending, long term squad building and classy intelligent passing football – its all about spending gazillions of pounds to do it in a few short seasons rather than building a club up from the basics.

  144. Paul N,

Let’s hope so. I was really impressed by the midfield in the 2nd half. We were on 3 yellow cards there, but managed to be disciplined and stay out of trouble. Also, save a couple of moments where we were backtracking, our shape when receiving the counter attacks was very good.

  145. Andy: “Steww – He was OK, but the least effective of our 3 central midfielders.”
Like Steww said, Andy, you have to watch the game again in order to capture Denilson’s impact. In the first half his link up play was extraordinary. There was one play that exemplified this the most at about the thirtieth minute. City won the ball back on our left. Denilson challenged Tevez and the ball popped up. Clichy headed down the left and it fell to Arshavin. Arsha passed through a crowd to get the ball to Denilson. Deni then touches the ball to Chamakh and receives again completing a sumptuous triangle. Then he passes the ball off to Cesc who got it to Nasri and off we went on the counter. This happened all the time in the first half. In the second he was the main reason why City got so tired. He was receiving the ball and playing simple passes off to Clichy, Song, Sagna and Cesc.

  146. California Gooner

Mancini’s comments about winning were the game 11 v 11 have to be taken with a grain of salt. What else is he going to say? That we rightly throttled them? Those commentators who saw a close, hard fought game weren’t watching the same match I was. Yes, City could have evened it up at 1-0, but that happens a lot, even in lopsided games. Thankfully that didn’t happen either and we went on to a well deserved romp.

  147. Yesterdays match reminded me of manutd beating spurs 3-0 with only ten men at Whiteheart lane a couple of seasons ago. At least Mancini has an excuse. Harry didn’t!

  148. I agree with everyone, even steww.

  149. Mancini’s comments were stupid. Arsenal came out of the blocks with implicit instructions from Wenger to target Boyata. Arshavin was wrongly flagged off side on a play that was identical to and preceded the play that caused the sending off. That play was down to good scouting and proper instructions. Therefore there’s no way Mancini can say that they would’ve won if there were 11 men on the pitch for his team.

  150. I remember Wenger being forced to put Gavin Hoyte against Robinho. Hoyte had a torrid afternoon but didn’t foul Robinho. And then last seasons match with Ade being silly. Revenge was long overdue!

  151. It would have been a different game had Cesc not made that pass that led Bayota to make that challenge. Oh Cesc!! Why Why Why?!?!

  152. @Steww alot of people have trouble seeing the enormous contribution Denny has in alot of games. It is because his job and his work is not glorious goalscoring and tricks and tikki -takka. Its tedious and hard work. Often he is not even in the television picture yet has posisioned himself well so the oposit has to rethink their moves. He works in the silent and he is gold for us.

But tbh he aint Cesc or Jack or Aaron or Song or any of our other superb, creative playful and exciting midfielders, with superb players like that around you a “boring” work horse like Denny just “dissapear” in all the football glamour that is the Arsenal midfield, he does the boring work. This does not mean he is not equally important he is just more “invicible”.

  153. It would have been a different game if Fabianksi wasn’t as good as he is? I will ponder on this a little bit more.

  154. California Gooner, you dont say we wouldve won, thats a total lack of respect for Arsenal.

  155. What a lovely day…

Delia at 4.06pm – a wonderful post from you, as so often is the case. Fairytale stuff indeed.

Poliziano @ 5.38pm – a healthy dose of unarguable sense being spoken there.

Paul N is happy, which makes me happy.

Muppet’s not getting carried away (but will secretly be dreaming the same glory dreams tonight as the rest of us… and why not!)

    Finsbury’s quoting Hendrix…

    Fabianski’s walking tall… (having won Geo over ;) )

    Life couldn’t be sweeter.

And Garry Cook, who I despise, is having to have a rethink.

  156. Denilson made 72 successful and 5 unsuccessful passes.

  157. c-bob

did avaris really buy his wife a shake weight?

if so thats just made my day

  158. who will start in goal on wednesday?

  159. California Gooner

Sad, I seem to remember Denilson have quite a bit of creative flair when he first started playing for us. He has taken that out of his game and focused on becoming more Gilberto-like. But I think this year, if he even gets a chance to play, he will have more license to go forward and be creative. That just seems to be the vibe in our midfield at general… a greater fluidity in roles.

  160. sad, tedious isn’t quite the right word – try poetry in motion. His one-touch passing is like the balance movement in the workings of a Swiss watch.

Really, really want to watch the game again but no time. Maybe tomorrow…
F*cking love this team. When Walcott and Nik and Rosicky came on and the away fans were dancing up and down ‘oleing’ every pass I just thought, wow, look out league, The Arsenal squad are coming back together.

  161. Liverpool played 45 minutes against us with 10 men and drew. On hindsight that was a poor result for us, but at the same time, maybe not. They had 1 month to prepare for that one game and were up for it for sure.

We almost beat Barca in the Eurofinal despite playing with 10 men.

The game still had to be won. As it was we won it, and it could quite easily have been 5-0

  162. Well, he says that he has.

Must be a very brave man, NJ.

Oh, Limpar? He was quoting Dylan.

  163. Oh dear, I just tried to say that something wasn’t tedious by posting a video of the inside of a watch. Don’t think that really works.. ah well.

  164. Well played the team with Nasri, Cesc and Woooocash being the standout performers. I am glad that with a run in the team Woocash is proving his worth. If Almunia was in goal, I doubt that we would have kept a clean sheet somehow. Woocash was brilliant yesterday – the 2 saves from Silva were top-class and came at important times in the game. Other than not getting to the ball ahead of Adebayor (but managing to put him off anyway) he was faultless and shows what a difference a real keeper can make. Its early days but maybe we have found the solution to our goalkeeping problems. I like Woocash and he deserves his shot. People should get behind him; he’s only 25 and will only get better.
A special mention for referee Mark Clattenburg who was excellent yesterday. It takes balls to send a player off after 4 mins – especially in a big game when they are a home player. I thought he controlled the game very well and made the correct decisions.

  165. Very good point, Consolsbob. I automatically read it Jimi’s voice in my head – even Dylan has said that it was Hendrix who really set the song alive. Hendrix borderline stalked Dylan in Greenwich Village – before he really took off. Legends both.

  166. ‘Hey Joe’ was a cover too, but nobody really gives tuppence for the original. Wonder if he gets a royalty…

  167. Well, I like the Hendrix version better myself.

I’ve never heard the ‘original’ Hey Joe. Who was it by?

  168. I’m not sure myself. I only know that it was a sort of popular one-hit-wonder type country and western song that his first producer gave him to cover. Consequently he quickly fell out of love with performing it – though it’s still one of my favourites.

Right, Consolsbob, top 5 Dylan tunes? Or if that’s too hard you can make it a top 10. I’m off for a run so you’ve plenty of time to think on it. I think I know mine roughly already – though shaving it to 5 is bloody torture.

    In a bit…

  169. California Gooner

Good point regarding Mark Clattenburg, Alec I.C. I actually started watching right after the sending off when Clattenberg seemed intent on evening things up by carding all our players and thought he was shit as Man City players made the most of every challenge. But you make me reconsider my position.

Ole, I always think we should beat Liverpool. We’re just a better team. But that was first game of the season, our team had not recovered from the long summer, and they still had Mascheranno playing in their midfield. To my mind, the team is looking great on average but is just now going through the collective learning process to learn how to win those tough games. Having Cesc back helps immensely not only on average, but more importantly in finding those little extras that provide a cutting edge.

  170. Top of my head, Limpar.

    Knocking on Heaven’s door.

It’s all over now Baby Blue.

    A Hard Rain’s a Gonna Fall.

    Positively 4th St.

    All along the Watchtower

  171. Lay Lady Lay…

  172. I am no expert on Bob Dylan songs but “blowin’ in the wind” and “I shall be released” are my favorites. Great lyrics!

    Just adding my two cents

  173. NJGooner:

Great series for my Rangers. We really played great baseball. Your Yankees ran into a buzz saw. We are peaking at just the right time and we are also healthy for the first time all year. Hamilton, Cruz and Kinsler all missed about 50 games this year. Now I know how you felt all those times when your guys were holding up the American league trophy. Rangers are no longer the least successful franchise in baseball history. Can not wait to go to the World Series games.

Yanks have a few off season issues to take care of but I am sure they will be back in the playoffs and stronger next year. I just hope Cliff Lee is still a Ranger and not a Yankee. As we talked about during spring training. Hope springs eternal. Good luck next year.

  174. Spanish Harlem Incident
Lily, Rosemary & the Jack of Hearts
    Gates of Eden
    Shelter from the Storm
    Girl from the North Country

I would definitely have had Positively 4th Street though if I’m honest, but you got there first.

The Hurricane was a close 6th, and Most of the Time… but that’s cheating..

Where’s YW? Bet he likes Bob Dylan.

  175. my 2 cents on Bob Dylan – Changing of the Guard and Senor from Street Legal are my 2 favs – if they are his top tunes i dont know, alls i know is i like em :)

  176. Nasri is the man.

  177. I have quite enjoyed all the humble pie thats been eaten by the fickles across the blogosphere today, particularly that regarding Fabianski. Arsene reckons Fabianski showed yesterday what they see regularly in training. That one statement makes a mockery of an awful lot of Arsenal blogs who are too quick and ill informed to irresponsibly judge our players and question the great man.

  178. I also like ‘Sarah’ but it’s not to most tastes I know.

‘Hurricane’ is a strange one. Good song but wasn’t it based on false premise?

  179. Dylan is one of the greatest lyricists of all times. His voice gets better with age. Shelter from the Storm my favorite.

  180. Evening james.

  181. Interesting choices DeiseGooner. Sign on the Window from New Morning has always been my fav Dylan song. Well that and “Tangled up in Blue” and “I Threw it all away”. Actually I think I’d have a hard time picking just a few…..

  182. A R S E N A L

  183. Bob should put some lyrics to these guys :)

    Good luck!

  184. I’ve been trying to get some words to fit into this for Arsenal, but with no luck. Most of the words would rhyme better with the Spanish language….but I would love this for an Arsenal song.

  185. Well really my point regarding Denny is that he is my favourit player. I like him alot. I do think alot of people see him as boring though and see him as a player that dissapears alot and bla bla bla..
Im glad alot of you do not. Cos denny rules and he dances when he scores :)

  186. @sad
How can you expect the same people that would want us to have a De Jong-like player in our squad to “reduce” opponents to be able to see and appreciate the artistry that a player of Denilson’s calibre offers. Because, let’s be honest, the way Denilson shadows opponents, always there to make a crucial interception or tackle and the way how he seems to be always available to accept an important pass that will keep our midfield ticking — that is pure art.

  187. Lukasz Fabianski…
mark my words: he could be extremely instrumental in Arsenal’s title challenge his season. If he is given the no 1 spot for longer, but leave that to Arsene.
This is potentially the world class keeper everyone was screaming at Arsene to sign in summer, but noone was able to identify or say where this person might come from. Turns out he was here with us all along, what a blast.
And behind him there’s still Wojciech. I recommend to everyone watching the interview with him on AOTV. A supremely confident young man. That means not one, but TWO world class keepers in the squad.
I see a new Arsenal era of dominance on the horizon. Wait just a little longer folks… the wait is almost over.

  188. Nasri was exceptional yesterday, I have have been REALLY, REALLY impressed by him this season. He just oozes class on the ball, even though he isn’t playing in his favoured position. That’s why I can’t agree to his new found AA excuse of him being played out of position, so he can’t take care of his defensive responsibilites.

If Nasri can do it so should Andrey.

Also while last season it would be Song who came over to cover for him when he went AWOL, with his change of role this season Song can’t always be relied on to do this, so both Gibbs and Clichy are being left unprotected.

Oh and a special mention for Fabby who was absolutely fabuloussssssss!!!

  189. Bac was badass to specially since we were expecting to be missing for three weeks till Christmas.

  190. Song is moving through training exactly like Cesc did before him. Last year Song took care of his defensive duties and didn’t worry about going forward much or scoring goals. This season he has the license to add goals to his CV.

  191. Bill, don’t get too confident. My Giants are a hard-working team with some outstanding pitching. Giants in 6!

  192. coming soon at the Emirate, from the producer of Van Basten,Cruyff,Gullit,
after the successful series Van Persie 04,Van Persie 05, Van Persie 06,Van Persie 07 , Van Persie 08 , Van Persie 09 , Van Persie 10 come van persie 10.5 the ultimate comeback of the genius
    CLick,click.click.click

  193. When is he coming back??

  194. Nasri is fully deserving of a new contract. News of the contract extension is based on reports I read.

  195. Bring on the Carling cup.

  196. I don’t think Fab, VP or Walcott have lost a match this season…..Theo was on fire before he went away and Fab looks well ..fab. I look forward to the big matches when they are there and S@*t myself when they are not. Arsenal have shown they are good without them, but back in the team Arsenal are really challengers for any title.
Almunia cannot come back in with the other Fab playing like this and nor should he, we have to push him forward now. Almunia is a good spare keeper at this level, but it is great to see Arsenal win a tough match where the keeper has kept them in it – rather than dumping them there!

  197. Kenyangunner/kabisa, do you watch Monday football show on ss3.I watched it yesterday and I was disgusted to say the least!!The whole show was almost about Manu, they got more highlights than the rest of the games that were played on Sunday.I hate Terry Pain or whatever his name is, the panel thought we are still 3 world class players away from a title and that out tippy tappy football would come to nought. I cant wait to prove all these pundits wrong.

  198. Firstlady,

Are you talking about the Monday Night show on Supersport3 in Africa? I’m currently in South Africa and I’d stopped watching that show long back.. The entire crew in that show are full of Chavs, ManUres and a Spud.

  199. NJGooner, consols,
I did indeed purchase it. Having found the video absolutely hilarious, I just couldn’t help but see if I could get a hold of it here in the UK. Trusty Amazon selling it for about £15!

Really enjoying the appreciation for Denilson – he is such a class player. As has been mentioned, sometimes in the heat of the game it’s difficult to pick up his positioning and appreciate his passing. Would love to see somebody make a highlights video of just one of Denilson’s games.

  200. Firstlady/Indian G,
I also live in SA and agree Supersport is complete rubbish. I’ve never bothered withtheir punditry.

  201. Henristic,

I usually change the language to something other than English. This allows me to enjoy the crowd in the stadium without having to listen to the crap English anti-arsenal biased plunditry. I enjoyed the Man$iteh game this way..

  202. Hey i m agree with your choice……….
