Carling Cup: Tottenham v Arsenal Preview

Whilst the Carling Cup is not high on the priority list, it seems beating Tottenham might just be important for Arsene. Nobody I have spoken with is taking this evening lightly despite the fact that it is very much a meeting of two ‘reserve’ sides. There is a suggestion that the squad which goes to White Hart Lane will contain more first choice players than usual at this stage of the contest but fitness issues dictate this to a certain extent. Vermaelen’s absence, coupled with loans and Nordtveit’s niggle require Squillaci or Koscielny to start in. The latter would be my guess simply on being younger, perhaps able to recover from two games a week quicker than the more senior partner.

The squad system in use for the Premier League will have an impact upon the Carling and FA Cups. Players who are not getting regular matches are likely to be used for those competitions, perhaps this was an expected by-product of the rule changes? Either way, it would be a surprise if Wenger opted for a totally inexperienced line-up. Indeed, can he field one? Those who are not regulars on Premier or Champions League matchdays have typically been loaned out or played for their countries at junior levels. Whilst that is not the same as first team football, it is a solid base for their footballing education.

It seems unlikely that the three youngsters mentioned in the report linked above, will not play; the question is where. Eastmond is by trade a defender although Wenger has used him in central midfield for his first team outings. Playing at right back tonight though is a real possibility with Eboue being pushed further up the pitch to support the midfield, supporting Lansbury and Denilson.

The Brazilian is almost certain to start, the match assisting in his return to the Premier League squad. Cesc ‘tweeted’ last night that his injury is likely to keep him out for a fortnight, Chelsea presumably the targetted game for recovery. That this channel was chosen to ‘leak’ that information suggests that it is accurate, the belief being that it is a result of conversations with the Arsenal medical staff rather than being based on Theo Walcott’s inaccurate feeling about his knock in Switzerland.

Harry Redknapp has been critical of Arsenal and others in the past for fielding a weakened team in this competition. The realityof the pressures of the Champions League have bitten and the Tottenham manager admitted yesterday that it will be a much-changed team that takes to the pitch this evening. Despite this, the fixture is no less important to supporters and ex-players. The League Cup has brought about some favourite and depressing memories, the 5-1 drubbing wrankles with me as I’m sure do the semi-final defeats for Tottenham. Perhaps the tannoy announcer could spike the evening once more by telling them how to apply for tickets for the next round. It worked wonders as inspiration for George Graham in 1987…

For Lukasz Fabianski, it offers a path to redemption. Roundly criticised for his performances last season, there is a growing feeling that he is in the last chance saloon. Whilst his predicament is nowhere near that certain, this is the last season where his position as second choice goalkeeper is going to be unchallenged. Szczesny’s progress has almost demanded inclusion tonight but like Keiran Gibbs, his lack of experience counts against him at this moment in time. Whether or not this changes next summer, only time will tell but it seems that he will be on course for the first team squad if things remain as they are.

Fabianski needs a good game. He did well in pre-season, aside from a manic forty-five minutes in Poland, which seemed to make up Wenger’s mind to start with Almunia. That and the failure to land Mark Schwarzer. Shay Given has reportedly been told that he can leave Manchester City in January which will no doubt intensify the calls and speculation for his signature. It is a high pressure environment for the Pole but that is how Wenger rightly believes it should be at Arsenal. Almunia responded positively to the summer activity; Fabianski needs to do the same.

The team I would expect to see tonight is:

Fabianksi; Eastmond, Djourou, Koscielny, Gibbs; Wilshere, Denilson, Lansbury; Eboue, Thomas, Vela

Rosicky might play in place of Wilshere but it seems unlikely with his injury record that he would be risked for essentially two consecutive games. Fabregas’ injury gave the Czech an hour at the Stadium of Light and his experience tonight would be invaluable. However, the possibility of a niggle ahead of the coming fixtures, especially with the captain being out makes the inclusion of Rosicky and even Nasri, from the start unlikely.

Arsene may or may not be there. Should he accept the charges laid against him by the FA in their desire to please the media, he would be banned tonight. If he accepts them or fails to appeal by Thursday, he missed WBA. That may be more convenient as it is a home game and lets be honest, the first XI ought to be able to manage themselves. He would be in the stands anyway, in contact with the bench, rendering the touchline ban useless. A stadium ban would be a more effective signal were the FA intent on restoring order but they are only happy pandering to PR.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Did anyone see what exactly happened between Wenger and Atkinson? Is there any video footage? Isn’t there a chance of appealing and disproving the charges?

  2. I hope we put up a good performance tonight and show the world the depth of our so called tiny squad.

  3. Judith Le'Strange

It seems that it’s “Let’s all have a go at Arsene Wenger”, is it because all these “so called big managers”, think they’re better than him or is it in fact the FA who can’t stand him, but let certain other managers get away with blue murder by saying what they like to who they like and nothing is ever done, naming no names but I think the Arsenal fans will know who I’m talking about.

  4. to be fair i think he does deserve a touchline ban. he pushed the 4th official when he was walking away. there was footage of it. that shouldn’t be allowed by any manager, not just ours. Personally i thought that having a go about the goal being 15 seconds over 4 minutes was a bit silly. and, on the same note, i don’t think our players need protecting, i think we need to strengthen up ourselves and adapt to the physicality of the league that surrounds us

  5. lets disapprove Harry and van da vert tonight.arsenal is bigger than spurs.

  6. I always look forward to the Carling Cup. Lansbury is my favourite reserve and I’ll be rooting for him hard tonight. His loan spells have omitted him from the squad for the last two years but tonight he finally gets his chance. A Steven Gerrard who thinks. (Not that I’m insulting Gerrard it was Benitez who said that Gerrard doesn’t think) In Thomas we have our answer to Didier Drogba. Too bad Nordtveit is injured. And I hope Wilshere gets to captain the team. Got to check his leadership credentials. If Cesc does go to Barca someday, and Wilshere continues his fine development, expect Jack to captain the team at age 21!

  7. He did push the 4th offical (if that could be discribed as a push) so it may be better to take this on the chin.

It was out of frustration and it was hardly an act of aggression though.

  8. He should have poked him in the eyes and kicked him in the balls!

  9. Really gutted for Nordveidt. Will be intresting to c what kind of squad sp*rs put out. Here’s to a Vela hattrick of lobbed goals

  10. Arsene has said this about Fabianski:

“I have massive faith in him and I think I have shown this historically. I am convinced he will become a great goalkeeper.

“We live in a world where if you have an opportunity you have to take it. You will get a second one, but you will not get 10 – and that is part of our job.”

He obvisouly rates him highly, but that last sentence is telling.

  11. Those are two very different notes, Matt.

Wenger pushed Atkinson slightly, presumably because the guy had his back turned and AW wanted to get his attention. Hard to tell if it was aggressive – it probably wasn’t, but I think a ban’s fair enough.

When it comes to the tackling debate/farce, head for ATVO. You won’t miss a word of what he’s said over the last 10 days about it.

The gist is that tough, competitive tackling is fine, but challenges intended to cow the other side – like Davies’ on Wlishere, Rosicky and Koscielny, and Robinson’s on Diaby – are not, and will lead to more injuries down the line, no matter who’s playing whom. Relatively straightforward really.

Or we could just “adapt to the physicality”. One way would be to get a few more cyborgs in the side. Titanium might not snap as often as mere bones.

  12. We need 2 win dis game just 4 2 reasons, numba one, we need 2 win dis game 2 prove 2 dem dat arsenal is more biger dan dem. We need 2 win 2day game 2 show our rivals dat really we are on track. One love 2 all gunner al over nigeria. One love.

  13. One criticism of AW – “We live in a world where…” – how many more times is he going to start a sentence like that?!

  14. Well and fairly said, Big Al.

  15. Wenger’s blind faith in Flapianski should be punished with a touch line ban. As he obviously is spending too much time berrating the 4th official and not enough time noticing that Fabianski couldn’t catch a cold and has no idea how a goalkeeper is meant to distribute the ball! Why on earth isn’t Chesney playing tonight!?

  16. Oneofus – It wasn’t agressive, but it wasn’t to get his attention either. Their conversation had finished and it was amost an “on your way” push in the back.

  17. Andy I think you’re my new hero

  18. Oneofus maybe he should just have kicked him in the ass to get his attention!

  19. Caxter

Poke in the eyes and kick in the balls should be reserved for Phil Dowd.

I’m still wondering what the role of the 4th official is, besides being an off-field proxy to take the abuse for the incompetent on-field officials.

  20. Looking at it again – I think that AW’s remonstrating, and Atkinson turns his back on him, then AW pushes him (lays a hand on his arm) to get him to turn around and face him again. Still, AW doesn’t need to be getting all up in his grill.

  21. £8,000 fine and 1 match ban is pin prick. Arsene can take it instead of wasting precious time to entertain those nincompoops at the FA.

  22. OneOfUs , nice clip. But he should have tried a “cantona.” Well, I guess he’s too old for that!
Pat Rice on the bench is better than having the bottom fifteen managers in the epl. COYG.

  23. I hope that £8000 fine is used to train English referees to read and understand the FIFA rule book.

  24. My view is that this added time on basis of “minimum” with discretion given to ref to add even more stoppage time is damn stupid and aribitrary. (Moolah City also suffered the same against ManUre last season. Above min stoppage time was any how added so that ManUre can win the game.) Unless there is an injury during stoppage time, no allowance should be added for time taken for throw in, goal kick, corners, etc. Such stoppages are normal and part and parcel of normal game time. The other exception might be time taken to book players for deliberate time wasting.

  25. As frustrating as it is, we can’t argue over 13 seconds. It would start to get stupid. The only way around it is not adopt the rugby model with the time keeper completely seperate (not a bad idea actually).

  26. More often than not referees blow their whistle exactly at the end of stoppage time that was put up on the board.

  27. not=to.

  28. Luke, I think refs let an attack play-out before blowing the whistle

  29. All this proves is that referees are inconsistent in application of the laws of the game. Letting the attack play out before blowing the whistle is without sound basis, other than to avoid incurring the wrath of the fans and managers (like Moyes against ManUre).

  30. The ban for Arsene (from video evidence) is just petty. When the FA cannot punish a brutal tackle like Robinson’s you wonder how their minds work.

  31. Andy I agree the rugby model would be a good idea. It would allow the ref to worry about other things during the game and not his time-keeping.

  32. The 4 minutes were up as the cross was played. Most refs would have blown as soon as the ball was cleared by Chamakh.

I dare say that most people watching on fully expected the whistle to go off at that point.

I know that refs are not supposed to arbitrarily add time to the time shown. Usually only if a sub, a penalty, an injury, or a goal. None of which happened there.

After that first half in which 11 very soft fouls were given against Arsenal to 1 against Sunderland, I just question Phil Dowd even more.

  33. Luke, what about a basket ball type stop watch?

  34. Really looking forward to tonight. As much as the Carling Cup has been ‘de-valued’ it’s such a great opportunity to see if players like JET, Lansbury Eastmond can make that step up to the first team. I would have liked to see Chesney in for this one though, a chance to see if he’s got the ability to handle the pressure at the top level.

Wenger shouldnt have been arguing about the goal as angrily as he did. It was within the laws of the game as they do normally let the attacking play take it’s course before blowing up, if it had been a minute over the alloted time i could understand his protests but for the sake of a few minutes…

We should have been more professional and played the game out, going to the corner if necessary – Wenger looked angry with Denilson near the end for doing exactly the opposite, he could have gone to the corner but instead went to carry on the attack. I love the attacking instincts but sometimes we need to win ‘ugly’…

  35. Totenham Hotsperm 1 – 3 Arsenal

  36. Barndoor Bendtner

    @dupsffokuf
That is exactly the point we should be making. AW should have a puishment for ‘roughing up’ the 4th official, but the FA and EPL should be concentrating their attentions on how to reduce the number of injuries. If they can use video on the managers, why not on the actual players?

  37. *for the sake of a few seconds*

  38. I do like the idea of the rugby style stopwatch though. Makes sense to me.

  39. Hotsperm makes them sound too virile, deano. Totenham Hotflush maybe…

  40. When push comes to shove i think the fa are pushing it.

  41. The ban for Wenger may seem harsh but this is because he was also charged with using abusive language. Luckily, I am an expert in lip-reading and I’ve used my skills to study the above footage of the incident. As far as I can make out, as Wenger shoves the officials back, he mouths the words ‘Son of a motherless goat’, which is unacceptable.

  42. I hope Danny Rose plays… and spends the whole game slicing volleys wildly into the stands… but I think he’s been loaned out to Kettering Town unfortunately.

  43. More of a luke warm trickle…

I thought the whole point of the time added on business was to remove the uncertainty at the end of a game as to how much added time the ref would play. So as the system was seen as transparent and not subject to (further) abuse.

  44. I have to agree with dupsffokcuf

How can Robinson’s attempted leg break on Diaby go unpunished, but Wenger gets a 8k fine and 1 match ban for poking the 4th official because he turned his back on him!??

It is truly nonsense, and just proves once again how flawed the rules of the game are. Ok Wenger may have said a few nasty things to the 4th Official, but I am pretty sure Fergie does it every time his team loses too, and whenever a decision goes against his team.

We conceded a goal to drop 2 points after the given injury time was up, any manager will be pissed. The FA and referees need to start showing some realisation, ban Robinson, ban any other player that attempts to break a leg, fine them, fine those that turn our game ugly every week where we are forbodden from seeing highlights of certain challenges. Not a manager poking a fucking 4th official!

    Its a joke.

  45. The more moaning etc. we do is playing into the hands of the scumbags that are trying to knock us.
Forget righteous indignation, it doesn’t work on these meatbrained planks, just get up dust ourselves off and shove it down their throats.
Best way to do that is beat the scum down the road convincingly and show em what it means to challenge on 4 fronts…

  46. Chris – Your point about Fergie reminded me about his conduct on Sunday. The camera caught him absoltley going mental at both the 4th official and the lino. There was no doubt at all he was being abusive…….but not one word has been written about it.

It fact I would bet the opposite is thought about it; “look at Sir Alex, it is great to see he still has that passion”. Two faced morons.

  47. Rinseout, good comment untill the end when you went a bit crazy.

  48. But Fergie, Moyes, Allardyce, Pulis et al will never get the same treatment as our manager. This is down to various, oft-repeated reasons. We need to stop dwelling on this futility and man-the-f up.
We know we will always get more stick than any other team, because we are bold enough to be different. We don’t want to be the same as those sell-outs. It is our cross to bear and we must bear it with pride. And moaning, complaining and whining that we don’t get treated the same as them is exactly what they want.

  49. i agree with rinseout.

  50. Sorry basically said the same thing twice there.

  51. Whats the situation with song?
Hes suspended 1 game right? Does that mean he cant play tonight but could play against west brom? Or could he play tonight but not against W. B.?

  52. Kenyan gunner

The basketball style stop watch is an interesting suggestion as it is the most accurate and objective method of time keeping. It doesn’t matter if the shot has been made, in mid-air or on the rim of the basket. As long as the buzzer has gone, and the ball has not dropped into the basket, it is not a basket.

However, it may not work on the football pitch as there are obvious differences of pace of the game, size of the court/pitch, etc.

Anyway, football administrators love controversies! Refereeing mistakes and the whole gamut.

  53. The action against Wenger is ‘strictly correct’ and so petty and vindictive. Managers must be having a giggle about it all.

Wenger has stepped out of line so many times warning the english football establishment and managers to take stock of their perspective on what constitutes foul play. The arguments are rudimentary: i have heard managers openly now say that less intervention by refs is in their interests (it levels the technical gap), and so makes english football ‘exciting’ because ‘less gifted clubs’ clubs can get a result (directly because of the more physical or negative play).

Arsenal and Wenger is certainly small compared to the football establishment, but its ideas are big and cannot be wished away. Wenger’s answers can be best expressed footballistically.

I am shocked by the extent of fouls on Arsenal players, man it’s like ‘open season’ sometimes.

Sooner or later, like a slow motion crash you watch with horror, a big deal ‘much loved’ player will however be seriously injured, and change the fortunes of ‘big’ club’s season – Zamora was a like a warning. Valencia. Ramsey. Warnings.

  54. If Liverpool don’t want Dani Agger I’d be happy for us to take him. I rate him quite highly, him and that ferocious left foot. Under Wenger I think he’ll really blossom.

I wish this had happened earlier. We could have offered them Silvestre for him.

  55. How did you rate Adebayor, Ole?

  56. Rinseout is right.

  57. Zimpaul,

Bingo. They really look very petty.

But Arsene’s commited a basic error. While being verbally aggressive towards anyone, the slightest touch would be deemed as assault or whatever

  58. I rate Adebayor quite highly. In his time in the Premier League, last 2 seasons included, he’s scored 1 goal every 2 games or better.

That’s a better scoring record than 90% of Premier League strikers. That’s a better record than Robin van Persie.

  59. oh make that 95% of Premier league strikers

  60. I’m not sure if mine is a minority view. Sunderland didn’t kick us, and still managed a competitive performance against us. There is a lesson from Sunderland for all the other lesser managers – that you can still play to the rules and be competitive.

  61. I’m glad that Adebayor and his talents are rotting in Money City. Decent striker, but a low down character.

  62. I agree with Ole. 9 times out of 10, the whistle would have gone as soon as the attack (corner) was completed and Arsenal cleared the ball.

Compare to another ref blowing as Everton were attacking, seconds before shooting. Moyes got a bit upset, like a volcano.

The two incidents make a good comparison.

  63. Zimpaul

Is it too much to wish that the “big deal ‘much loved’ player” is going to be Wayne Rooney? :D

  64. Rinseout

I don’t think any fan, manager, coach, or player should keep brushing aside the problems that exist in our game.

This attitude is what has cost the national team on many occasions, allowed players like Taylor, Shawcross to gain a very nice wage from playing anti-football, and is the same attitude that is hampering the quality of young players. Its time for everyone to play football instead of using these cowardly tactics which Fat Sam think are ingenius!

So no Rinseout, I wont ignore the FA’s ignorance mate!

  65. I agree with Luke. Sunderland played us well and got a fair result too. Well done to them. They were not negative, but they were physical and got away with the usual endless kicks unpunished.

Not bad to draw the match.

Wenger was upset because we could have, should have snatched an unlikely win and the ref was inconsistent, borderline unfair to Arsenal. Fergie would have had a cadenza, on the spot, in mutli-colour, and sound effects.

  66. Ole – i agree about Agger. I’ve always liked him and would be a great addition to any top team. He can play full back if needed too and can bang them in like TV5!

  67. ChrisGoona – I’m not saying ignore it son, just take it as a given.

  68. Oh Luke, I agree. He’s proven to be a lowlife. And on balance I don’t miss him at all. But he is a good player, and for the life of me I do wonder why so many are in denial about it.

  69. Ole, not sure your Ade stats are 100% correct, but fair point.

  70. Also agree about what Sunderland showed Luke. They showed you don’t have to kick Arsenal to get a result and you can actually take the game to a top team instead of the spineless 10 men behind the ball that the smaller teams are supposed to have to put up.

  71. If you had watched Stoke v West Ham last weekend, you would have seen Shawcross and his dirty tricks, at one point being caught on camera, but not by the referee and his assistant, of illegally stopping a run through on goal by a West Ham forward. This happened off the ball. I can’t remember which West Ham player was involved.

  72. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE TO MEET THE ARSENAL FANS BEFORE THE TOTTENHAM GAME ??? NEED A PUB IN TOTTENHAM NEXT TO THE GROUND!!!

  73. Song will miss tonight’s game.

It was interesting to see that Webb blew the final whistle the moment the 4 minutes were up during the Man U / Pool game on Sunday, even though it had just taken Man U 30 seconds + to take a free kick – What a suprise!

Saying that, we should of won the game anyway.

Arsene was right though, so many positives to take out of the game – Squillaci and Koscielny were class.

Even with 10 men, our performance reminded me of the title winning season’s, when even when down to 10 we always looked comfortable.

And I think Yogi has already said this in a previous post, but that is 4 points gained from the Blackburn (A) and Sunderland (A) fixtures compared to last season, and we are 2 points up on all our corresponding fixtures to far (ignoring Blackpool at home).

I have seen some articles today proclaiming Spurs to have the superior squad, so hopefully we will prove that to be a myth tonight!

Apologies for talking about Sat’s game, haven’t been on since.

And down to 5th in the Fantasy League, not a great weekend!

  74. Imagine if Rooney had his leg broken in the manner of Ramsey. Hell would be unleashed. Gerrard. Lampard. Ferdinand. Flavour of the month Milner. Imagine if Beckham had suffered such a fate.

  75. Arsenal 3-2 Spuds tonight. :)

  76. Delia-----Block 112

At heart , we all feel hard done by after the fallout from Saturday but I think the time has come to move on. AW should take his punishment and look forward to the greater challenges ahead. Don’t forget we have a CL match next week without Cesc and a trip to the Bridge with an injury hit side.
Tonight’s encounter will at least show us how far our ” Kids” have progressed. Everything crossed!
    COYRs.

  77. Luke

I was impressed with Sunderland, they played at a high tempo. There were numerous occasions though when our players were chopped down but nothing was awarded, where as we were penalised for pettier fouls. This is the referees fault I suppose, he pretty much favoured Sunderland right the way throughout the 90mins on many deabatable decisions.

I think the awarded penalty was a result of having that guilty concience in his mind, but he made up to Sunderland after by allowing the extra ball in the box after the corner as well as the 4 minutes which seemed a bit extensive.

Does anyone else feel like this? I always had the impression we was playing against the ref too…

  78. ZP

And the next bright England prospects, Adam Johnson (I do rate him), Joe Hart. If they break a leg like Ramsey, all hell would be unleashed too.

  79. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE TO MEET THE ARSENAL FANS BEFORE THE TOTTENHAM GAME ??? NEED A PUB IN TOTTENHAM NEXT TO THE GROUND

  80. I’d rather someone like Shawcross gets his leg snapped, then we will see how a complete twat will react to another player that everyone claims to be ‘a decent guy off the pitch’

  81. Yup. It’s time to move on. Game tonight, WBA weekend, and then midweek next week UCL away.

  82. Not sure Benw but your post made me this of this: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/minor_differences

  83. Seems like Agger likes to play Wengerball.

“I’m here to play football and not to unload [the ball]“

  84. I don’t think there are too many Arsenal Friendly pubs close to the ground Ben!

You might be better off sticking further up Seven Sister’s road.

  85. Arsene has basically been fined and banned for tapping someone on the shoulder and saying “Er… excuse me, sir, a word in your shell-like if you would.” Petty doesn’t come close… the fuckers have been lying in wait for this to happen for many a month. Not whining, just saying: bastards.

  86. Rinseout,

You’re free to post the correct stats. You could list the strikers who have a better strike rate to start with.

  87. Funny quote by Alex McLeish: “Finishing in the top 17 is our priority again.”

  88. Thank you MATT any ideas ?? I am going to the game but want to meet other fans before hand!!

  89. I agree with Ole, as much as most dis-liked Ade, he had a very good goal return for us. I never really bought into the whole laziness thing, I actually liked how he played for us before he started flirting.

Now though, he is probably next to Flamini, my most disliked ex Arsenal player of recent years.

Flamini or Ade, who do you hate more ???

  90. I hate Ade way more than the Flamster. He’s a complete wanker. And how can you say he wasn’t lazy??? He was walking around the pitch on days when he felt like doing exactly that, then he went to Shitty and started running his arse off again, he’s lazy when it suits him and trys when he’s got a oint to prove. Completely selfsish twat who’s there to better himself rather than help the team.

And I hate Cole as much as Ade.

  91. Chris,

A better comparison may be lesser Emmanuel or Cashley. To which my disgust is shared equally.

I don’t really hate on Flamini. It was his boyhood club and more money I guess, but he was still dishonourable. In fact, his leaving was a bit of a blessing as without which, we may not be playing with the likes of Alex Dimitri Song Billong or The Samba King: Lord Denilson.

Speaking of, anyone listened to It’s Up for Grabs? Davies really goes off on one about Clichy.

  92. Ole Gunner:
    Ade
    2008-2009: 27 apps 10 goals
    2009-2010: 26 apps 14 goals
    2010-2011: 02 apps 00 goals

Chamakh’s certainly done better this season.
I’m not arguing with your assessment of the player, just didn’t think your stats were 100% correct; i.e. 10 in 27 is not 1 goal every other game, (it’s nearly 1 in 3) neither is 0 in 2. 14 in 26 is better than 1 in 2.

  93. That back-heel was ridiculous, LA. Apparently a load of Brazil and Spain’s current players were brought up on Futsal, which I’m assuming is where that goal came from. Have you seen Falcao? I think this video’s done the rounds, and all the footage is from just a handful of games:

  94. Agger has had a fair few injuries for liverpool, despite being a good player and a goalscoring centre back. So depending on your view, he could either fit in well, or be someone we could do without…

  95. Adebayor clinched it when he headbutted Bendtner. Absolutely disgraceful behaviour on the same level as Bellamy, Bowyer, Fuller etc. I don’t think such elements have a place at Asrenal however talented they might be.

  96. Geo

I was referring to Ade being not lazy prior to his last season. His last season with us his attitude certainly changed, as well as his work ethic.

I forgot about that cu*t Cashley, thanks for reminding me !!!

They are my top 3, Flamini being 3rd most hated for me, I felt really let down when he used us for a move and mentioning several times he intends to sign.

Its a trick one, but I think Cashley wins the award for most hated from me.

  97. All of you can go and hang yourselves.Your team has no guts.Learn to win ugly, and you will be counted. Not only when you play beautifully that you win.You can play at a low gear, and still grind out results. But in your case, its a different thing.Thats why your team is a shit, and will keep being shit.Spurs 3 Arsenal 1.

  98. Cole is the worst by far. He was “one of us” and had come through the ranks. He was having shady meetings in hotel rooms with Chelsea to engineer a transfer. Then there was all that “I nearly swerved off the road” business.

Adebayor for all his faults was just a twat. He is a foreign player so cannot be expected to have the same loyalties as a player like Cole. He is a mercanary type bloke, so what he did was not unexpected.

Cole by far is the worse.

  99. LEmmany peed me off with the headbutt on Bendtner (a shame he’s still injured cause this could have been his night to exercise some demons), but he cemented his place in the book of the bad with his stamps upon Cesc and RVP.

  100. One more, sorry, but this is sweet:

  101. Austino,

You shouldn’t talk when your team got wanked off by young boys.

I see jiz on your face

  102. Rinseout,

So let me get you right, you have posted stats that show that in the Premier League in 53 appearances as a main striker Adebayor scored 24 goals. Which pulling out my calculator adds up to 1 goal every 2.2 games?

    WTF?

Now, I know you don’t like the player but this is absurd.

By the way, a striker who scores 1 every 2 games, can be expected to score 30 goals a season if he plays 60 games. The top sides usually play about 60 games a season

  103. Amazing goal

  104. Rinseout

In fairness to Adebayor, he has scored 60 goals in 132 games which is as near as dammit 1 every 2 games.

    YW

  105. I am looking forward to seeing JET tonight. If he is in the mood Harry and his boys may not have time to find out what has hit them.

  106. Luke at 10:14. Reminds me of Sepp Blatter. He said that using camera replays would take the passion out of the game. An industrial age dinosaur if I knew one!

  107. That was over head height.

    ‘Heads !!!!’

  108. Chrisgoon at 9:43. Maybe if Wenger had attempted to break the fellows leg he might have gotten off lightly!

  109. Adebayor is a good player. Don’t like the bloke, but he is. If he had been with us last year as the lone striker (on form and interested), our season may have been very different.

Reports circulating that the club have confirmed Cesc is out for 3 weeks, meaning he would miss the Chelsea game.

  110. I did say that I thought your stats were not 100% correct, and I proved that.

  111. I will stay out of pedantry corner from now on…

  112. Pendantry is king in the land of the anally retentive! My mun has an OCR according to Dr Gadget, so I tell her that weekly!

  113. Gadget at 11:10. Flamini’s boyhood club was Juventus. Had to do with Platini and the fact that they were both Franco-Italian. He went to Milan for the money – and to win cups as well, or so he pleaded!

  114. Wow. Great stuff, OOU. I love futsal. Really pure form of the game – all about the joy of it. I was reading that there’s a region of Brazil more famed for it’s quality futsal players than any other… and that almost all Brazilian futsal teams will have a player from this region playing for them… like a Brazil within Brazil! Can’t remember the region but they do not have a top-flight football team which might account for the massive interest in futsal.

  115. OCR?? christ work’s effecting my that much? OCD I meant, OCD

  116. Good lord, I’m turning into a vegetable.

  117. Gadget@11.37, indeed, I’ll leave it to the more skilled practitioners of the art…

  118. So JET loves 3 point lane… forgot that… well done, deano.

  119. Hope these quotes made by Szczesny and reported on Young Guns website are manufactured and not real.. . .

“Despite our talks before the season, Arsène Wenger seems to forget he has a goalkeeper named Wojciech Szczęsny in the team. He is avoiding me at every occasion.”

“Wenger told me to fight for a first-team place, but then he didn’t include me in the squad for the Carling Cup game. My friends told me not to worry, that it’s a marathon, and not a sprint. But a marathon isn’t about running in the same place for three years.”

  120. Why does JET always have his name spent in capitals? Is he some kind of Superhero?

  121. I’m laughing at ‘Appy ‘Arry moaning that he can’t field his key players tonight because they have West ham, Twente, Villa and I don’t know how many more games coming thick and fast.

And this from a punk who used to deride Wenger for not taking the Carling cup seriously. Damn hypocrite.

  122. Szczhut-up, Szczęsny.

  123. James – Indeed he is. A Spud slayer by all accounts. :)

  124. Darius, Redknap is no punk, how dare you, he is more of a Mod.

  125. goonerandy, Were sending in David ‘The Skip’ Bentley

  126. Darius

I find it very amusing also. All these years we get criticised for not fielding our starting 11, yet now it turns out Arry’s squad can’t cope with being in the Champs League.

Will Arry get publicly criticised for fielding a second team tonight like Wenger has on countless times? Not a chance in hell, although I do not believe he will field such a weak team as he is afraid of what our 2nd string can do to them..

Either way we will turn them over tonight.

  127. JD

    The interview is here: http://www.sport.pl/pilka/1,65080,8403721,Wojciech_Szczesny__Zasluguje_na_wiecej.html

Even allowing for Google’s loose translations, there is a sense that this part of a negotiating stance with Wenger. It is apparent that he wants first team football but is contradictory in some other responses.

    YW

  128. James – I am sure the away fans will give him a worthwhile reception.

  129. Tech9 does seem quite outspoken. I just hope he has patience.

  130. L’equipe pour ce soir…

    - – - – - – Mannone – - – - – - -
    Eboue Djourou Koscielny Gibbs

    - – - Wilshere – Denilson – - – -
    Rosicky – - – - – - – - – - – JET
    - – - – - – - Vela – - – - – - – - -

Subs: Szczhutyourface, Miquel, Aneke, Afobe, Lansbury, Deacon, Yennaris/Ozyakup.

  131. His contract ends in June lets hope we dont have another situation like Merida where he just walks away i felt sure he would get a chance tonight

  132. Maybe Tech 9 is just raising his hand at the back of the class so that he’s noticed.

As much as his comments may come out as strong, another way to look at it is that we have someone willing and able – and he’s itching for that No. 1 jersey.

That’s not a bad thing – is it?

  133. No I don’t think it is. He is obvisouly a confident young lad so fair play to him. The worry is that he is still probably a few years away from the 1st team…..will he wait around?

  134. I’m not sure about this JET guy. His name worries me.

  135. if he doesnt get any game time we will have a problem in January as he can talk to other clubs.
After seeing him at Brentford I am just amazed that AW says Fab is world class and Chesny is not mentioned

  136. Randy hes 20 at 18 Casillas was playing for Madrid. he cant wait years.

  137. I fucking laughed at one of James’ comments. Now I need to kill myself. Bugger.

  138. I think he will have to. I just can’t see Arsene throwing him into the team, even next year.

  139. Szczhutyourface

    Like it Limpar :)

My team prediction for tonight will be …

    - – – – – – – Fabianski – – – – – – -
    Eastmond Djourou Koscielny Gibbs
    - – – – – – – -Coquelin – - – — – – -
    - – – - Lansbury – Denilson – – – -
    Eboue – – – – – – – – – – – – – Vela
    - – – – – – – - JET- – – – – – – - – -

Frimpong would have been a sure starter if available… I don’t know if Coquelin is available also, i would imagine Rosicky / Nasri to step in if he isn’t.

JET I think could switch with Vela like you have Limpar. I really hope Lansbury gets the nod too.

  140. Chris – Le Coq is out on loan. I reckon Squillachi might start because of his experience.

  141. I think we would win if Fabianski wasnt playing. If he plays we wont

  142. My predictictions for this evening
    Fab
    Easty Djoury Kozer Gibbsy

    Denny

    lansby Wilshy

    Ebooy Vela
    JET

    score Spurs 1 3 Arsenal
    GS, spurs James 90
    Arsenal Vella 25 69 Gibbs 80
James the spurs fan to finaly see the light and do away with his planned sex change in order to look better in white

  143. Gibbs as an anytime scorer at 15/2…. hmm… James, who will be starting at leftback do you think, Naughton, Hutton?

  144. Sorry, at rightback not leftback…

  145. Arsne has accepted his ban for tonight so will be in the stands. At least we won’t have to hear the vile chants he normally has to put up with.

  146. I don’t think any human being on earth is as inept as some Arsenal fans claim Fabianski to be.

  147. The Porto team may disagree with you OOU.

  148. Have to say Goonerandy, I am a bit disappointed that he’s missing tonite’s game. I would have preferred him “absent” on Saturday.

  149. OneOfUs

Porto,Wigan and Blackburn lasty season how quickly you forget

  150. Fabianski would look ‘world class’ at Brentford.

Where did the ‘Fabianski will use WHL to prove himself’ bit come from? Fabs? AW? It is the Carling Cup, which has been used for our 3rd and 4th choice keepers in recent seasons, so I think Mannone might get a game.

  151. JD – I know what you mean, but it is probably the right thing to do.

  152. Limpar – Fabianski has been our CC keeper in recent seasons mate. You are probable thinking of around the time when Almunia was “injured” so Fabianski could not be risked in the CC as he was our No1 at the time.

  153. Also the recent comments have come from Arsene.

  154. I think that is what I’m thinking of, andy… vs. West Brom and maybe Liverpool too.

  155. And how often you change your name, Trevor.

I didn’t claim that he hasn’t made mistakes, just that the criticism is exaggerated. I still contend that he wasn’t at fault against Blackburn and it’s time his luck turned.

If he makes a match-costing mistake tonight I’ll change my username to Sh*twit for a week or so,

  156. And if he doesn’t, you’re never allowed to change your name again on here, Trevor. Agree?

  157. I am not a fan of unproven 20 year olds who actually believe their own hype. It’s heartening to know it’s not something that exclusively ails English youngsters

  158. Fabianski is a strange one; at times he looks a very very decent keeper, and I do quite like him. He just does not seem to be able to handle the pressure of certain situation. At times he looks no better than a pub player, and some of the mistakes are really not acceptabe at the level. And he seems to pull one every game as well (beware OOU).

I bet he is the best keeper in training though.

  159. I was impressed with Szczesny last year, but this whole thing smacks of Quincy to me.

  160. OOU – literally putting his name on the line…. will Trevor face him up…. unlikely.

  161. Ole – Agreed. I hope that is not a warning sign from him. It is more difficult for a goalkeeper to break through though. Any other position can get the odd game through a season, but that does not(understandably) happen for a keeper.

  162. Off on vacation guys. Not much football where I am but I am watching over this blog from a distance. So be nice.

  163. The other annyoing thing about it is his dismissal of Mannone’s claims. He almost shows contempt for him.

  164. To be fair though, Tech9 seems a possibility for our future No1. I can’t see Mannone ever seriously challenging for that role.

His nose is simply too big.

  165. Luke- a basketball shot is considered good if the ball has left the shooter’s hand before the buzzer sounds. The ball can be in midflight when time runs out and still count as long as it has been released prior to the buzzer. The NBA has lights that go off as well to enable the official to determine whether an attempt is good. Football doesn’t need quite such precise timing, although I could see a start/stop clock employed in extra time to good effect.

  166. LOL goonerandy. I can see it too. At the least Mannone has to go out on loan to be number 1 somewhere. I havent seen enough of him to know his capabilites. He’s just 21 too! He’s Italy’s u-21 goalkeeper and they do have a good trackrecord of producing keepers.

Who knows if he’ll make it? He won’t if he never goes out and proves somewhere that he can be a number 1.

  167. I dont agree with this it is quite embarrassing for Wenger to be baned but lets hope for victory despite all the problems we are facing

  168. http://www.tribalfootball.com/wojciech-szczesny-drops-arsenal-bombshell-i-want-out-1129691?

More on the Szczesny story. I find it quite funny that they class this as a “bombshell”. He is our 3rd choice (maybe even 4th) goalkeeper. I doubt most hacks know any other keepers of that status in the lge, let alone would class it as a “bombshell” should he want to leave.

  169. Szczesny: “I’m ready to play at highest level but I need a club that believes in a 20-year-old. In Arsenal there’s no such bravery. My main goal is to play for Arsenal, but if there’s a move option, we’ll have words.”

It is a bit disappointing really, considering that Wenger is well known for giving players like Cesc, Fabianksi, Djourou, Cole, Clichy, Van Persie, Song, Denilson, Bendtner, Walcott, Gibbs, etc etc etc etc etc first team opportunities.

You would think he would have realised hes at the perfect club to give him that chance.

If he really does think that he should be 1st choice keeper without easing is way in and earning it, he will not make the grade at a top team. Reminds me of Diarra who was very impatient switching from club to club.. where is he now? I lost track!

  170. Andy @ 1.21 dont be mean to Mannone.

I wonder why he is never mentioned these days, he did fairly well when he filled the no.1 spot

  171. Hi guys, do y’all know any good website where I can get a stream for the game? No TV coverage over here where I am. Thanks!

  172. Chris – heh, he is at Madrid.

  173. goonerandy

I thought so, was wondering whether he moved on from there after the speculation linking him to Spurs a few weeks back.

  174. i ve no idea why wenger keep 4 GK.
He should have sent both our young Gk on loan and get an old GK as extra back up or send Fabianski on loan while let Szczesny and mannone fighting for number 2.
Now we have big Al for number 1, fabianski n2 and number one Carling cup and reserve match. So the other two have very little to do and they are not getting experience from competitive match.

  175. remember this? the best 3 points we got all season in my humble opinion.

  176. lordgunner on September 21, 2010
    at 2:08 pm

The kids that are part of the Carling Cup squad are usually not sent on loan, or sent on loan after we’re eliminated.

So any number of the kids could still go out on loan

  177. I think Chesney should be given his chance. I know it’s not good to have him coming out and saying those things, but it’s no different to the possible exaggerations and mis translations that Arsh was ‘quoted’ as saying last season. I’d like to be able to speak polish and get a real feel for what he said, rather than reading it in print, from headline grabbing media and in another language.

People have been very quick to jump on his back about this… If i were him, i’d be getting anxious and would be itching to play at the top level. If he can’t get in the Carling Cup squad, how long is he going to have to wait? Will he have to wit until Fab and Mannone are out of the equation for whatever reason? A goalie needs confidence and it seems he has that, along with amazing reflexes and the balls to shout commands at his back line when needed…

  178. lordgunner

You have a point, but I don’t think Wenger was entirely convinced by his goalkeeper options prior to pre-season. He needed to keep Scweznhy around just in case, and I am not sure Wenger planned to go into the season without signing an experienced backup.

So if that was the case like many believe and he was unable to get his man in, one goalkeeper is here who would have went out most likely. Then he would have probably had an easier choice on who to loan out.

Much will depend on Fabianski’s ability to recover I feel, and I believe he can do it. This is not the ideal game though, a high pressure derby!

I expect one of Fabianksi or Scweznhy to get a loan move.. (again depending on Fabianski’s performances from now till January.

Wenger needs to be convinced by then, going by his recent comments he is giving him another shot, but it was a sort of last warning too I feel.

I really like Fabianski, and many like myself were very optimistic about his potential before getting chucked into high profile games at a vital point in the season, lets hope he has learnt, even if it is the HARD WAY!

  179. http://www.footballfancast.com/2010/09/football-blogs/should-referees-be-more-accountable-for-errors?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ffc_liverpool_blogs+%28FFC_Liverpool_Blogs%29

I for one think referees should be accountable, but not before video tech is introduced. Refereees are only human so bad calls can be attributed to human error or just looking elsewhere at the time. Video tech in conjuction to an accountability panel may go someway to addressing injustices

  180. I don’t share your confidence in Fabianski Chris. When strikers come up against a GK that they percieve as weak, they already have the upper hand. He seems mentally weak for a GK and no title challenging team can allow for that. I was really hoping that the CC would belong to Chesney this year and Mannone as 3rd choice with Fab going out on loan to attract potential buyers.

I do agree about people underrating Mannone though, that game shown above was awesome. I’d rather have him around than Fabianski.

  181. Fabianski is 25 years old now. Whilst not old in a goalkeeping sense, he is at the age where he needs to be a No1 somewhere.

If he does not turn himself around and push Almunia for No1 status, I can see him moving on in the summer.

  182. Geo

Fabianksi was in exactly the same position as Scweznhy, what if Scweznhy goes down a similar route and is played in high profile games which prove too much for all his hype and potential?

Sounds just like the Fabianski of 2 or 3 years ago that everyone was raving about with his Carling Cup performances. Difference here is Scweznhy hasn’t even proved himself in the CC!!! So what makes you think he will come out better when he has less preparation?

  183. The Szczesny quotes sounds like petulance to me. No one believes in him? Why would Wenger chase Schwarzer if he doesn’t believe in him? Though i’ll gladly eat my words if the story was sensationalised.

  184. I was never raving about Fabianski to be honest. There are many technical things that a goalie can learn, but when it comes to personality that can’t be changed very much at all. Chesney has far more confidence, bravery and aggression, whereas Fabianski looks scared most of the time and has no command over his defenders.

“Difference here is Scweznhy hasn’t even proved himself in the CC!!! So what makes you think he will come out better when he has less preparation?”

That’s what i mean, this should have been the year for Chesney to prove himself in the CC. Fabianski is 25 now and i can’t see his mental issues changing anytime soon. Hopefully i’m massively off the mark, but logic suggests otherwise. Tech 9 looks much more like a natural keeper to me, with the personality of a winner.

  185. I dont like talking badly of any Arsenal players, but Fabianski has never filled me with confidence. A change in the pecking order would please me no end. Al, Tech9/Mannone, then Fab.

Fabianski probably only plays in goal cos he was bullied into it at school ;-) that was a joke by the way before i get rinsed for that..!

  186. I agree with Geo.

  187. Tech 9 should be on loan and probably would have been were it not for the late decision on almunia. Januray will be different.

The comments show lack of respect but some of the best keepers in history have had a similar ruthless/mental edge to them. A sign of character either way…

Im not sure today is the most effective timing for monsiour virtuous to be telling other people off for being outspoken. personally I thought he was acting a little petulant on saturday. we had a couple of cynical challenges ourselves, well from what I could tell through the foggy beer googles of atvo. sometimes you just gotta take it on the chin.

  188. I think Fabianski is the type of keeper which is capable of making a number of amazing saves every match, only to get the basics wrong and cost the team a goal.

  189. Silly question I know, but can someone tell me how the referee physically decides how much time is to be added on for stoppages, (please)? Does he run a dual time watch where one runs out to 90 minutes and one is adjusted every time play stops? And at what point does he tell the 4th official how much time to add on? It seems this happens before the 90th minute so what happens if there is a stoppage between the extra time being displayed and the 90th minute?
This is something I have never really thought about, even though my brother used to be a Sunday League referee.
Maybe I just need some of CBob’s scrumpy?

  190. I think Fabianksi must have bags of personality. Whenever I see him he’s grinning ear to ear and walking tall. Fair play to him. I’ve seen him make mistakes but I’ve not seen him looking scared. If anything he’s been too aggressive in the past, particularly off his line. That sort of rush of blood to the head, which you can put the ‘pick-up’ at Porto down to, is precisely the sort of thing that will be ironed out with more experience.

Here’s to a Fabianski blinder tonight, following on from Almunia. Prove ‘em all wrong time.

  191. Hi guys, do y’all know any good website where I can get a stream for the game? No TV coverage over here where I am. Thanks!

  192. Limpar – The “pick up” at Porto was not his main error in that match IMO. It was giving the ball back and then turning his back on play. At 24/25 years old these types of basic errors should have been ironed out of his game.

Lets hope he has a great game tonight.

  193. Rinseout @ 9:58:

“But Fergie, Moyes, Allardyce, Pulis et al will never get the same treatment as our manager. This is down to various, oft-repeated reasons. We need to stop dwelling on this futility and man-the-f up.
We know we will always get more stick than any other team, because we are bold enough to be different. We don’t want to be the same as those sell-outs. It is our cross to bear and we must bear it with pride. And moaning, complaining and whining that we don’t get treated the same as them is exactly what they want.”

Spot on. 1 or 2 trophies will stop all of this crap we complain about everyday. All the moaning and whining just makes is worse. We can shut them up the old fashion way. Winning.

  194. Limpar – i hope you’re right. But i think those rushes of blood are down to overkeeness rather than aggression. That probably can be ironed out with experience, but the lack of authority and command at the back is much harder to learn. It’s more of a natural attribute. Something that the best goalies of all time have had in spades.

Of course i’m right behind him for tonight, but i would rather have seen tech 9 get his chance. I hope Fab proves me wrong, although i’ve said that a few times now…

  195. Thanks, Arseman! (Sounds weird saying out loud!:P)

I hope we play a few more of our youth/reserve players, having seen that youtube link deano posted. The spirit of the derby seems strong in them and they’ll definitely be fired up for it.

    Perhaps a line up like:
    Fabianski
    Eastmond Djourou Koscielny Gibbs
    Denilson
    Lansbury Wilshere/Rosicky
    Vela JET Arshavin

  196. Yeah, that was a bit naive. He should have hid the ball under his shirt. In his defence though that freekick was refereed atrociously. But I wouldn’t call that a basic error myself, more something you learn out of experience, which despite his age he hasn’t had a lot of.

  197. I hope we aren’t seriously risking first teamers this evening.

Some of the logic I’ve seen paraded around (not here) along the lines of ‘we’ve got lots of injuries already so we have to play our first team…’ seems a bit backward.

We registered 70+ plus players for the league, so surely we can throw together a second string team, and rest our important first teamers?

Would be very surprised to see any of Chamakh, Rosicky, Nasri, Arshavin etc start.

  198. Limpar/Geo – take a step back a minute – can you even believe we are even in a situation where you are discussing which of our goalkeeper’s many significant errors (in a single game) were the worst?

And he is about to start another game for us.

  199. MDGunner,

Usually the ref does have two watches but just in case one breaks down during the game.

How the referee keeps time is up to him. It also depends on the level of football. The refs at Premier league stadium can see the electronic scoreboards and they can converse by radio with the other 3 officials.

What I do know is that very late in the game, around the 88th minute, the ref tells the 4th off how much time will be added. If any stoppages occur after he’s communicated the time that’s left to play, the ref can add that time on. If there are any other stoppages occur in extra time, then the ref can add even more time.

Apparently, the guidelines to league referees is to allow 30 seconds for every substitution and goal celebration. He should allow as much time as is needed to take a penalty. He can also allow the full amount of time due to long stoppages due to player injuries, or a stoppage due to an invasion of the pitch or any forced stoppage.

Beyond that, referees are told VERY strictly to not add time arbitrarily.

Of course the referees’ time keeping on the length of stoppages is approximate and an inexact science.

What makes Phil Dowd’s additional time unacceptbable is that there was absolutely no additional stoppage.

People are letting him off by making the claim that it’s a minimum of the time announced. Yes it is, and yes the referee has the discretion to extend play, but the reasons for doing so are clearly stipulated in advance.

  200. livearsenal, i havent got into that discussion. I was talking about the different traits in our 2 polish goalies… All goalies make mistakes, but some deserve the chance to make those mistakes too! If Chesney played in several high profile games and made similar blunders consistently, then i’ll stand corrected, but he needs to be given those chances sooner rather than later imo.

  201. Cheers for that Ole, i wasn’t sure about that either…

  202. Hold on, he’s played and played well since then and kept a number of cleansheets doing so. He had a horrible game. It happens. I’m looking forward to him coming out tonight and showing everyone what a good goalkeeper he is and why he plays for Arsenal.

  203. “I’m looking forward to him coming out tonight and showing everyone what a good goalkeeper he is and why he plays for Arsenal”

Hope he does just that. I’m happy being made to look like a fool if it brings positivity to Arsenal!

  204. Limpar,

I understand why Fabianski’s action was deemed naive but the referee messed that one up. You simply can’t play advantage when the referee has intervened and 1 player has delayed the quick restart.

For me, in the final analysis, it’s the referee’s fault 100%

  205. The referree was wrong there Ole you’re right, but the opportunity for the quick free kick and, inevitably, the goal should not have arisen. Naivity was apparent.

  206. * In almost all other sports they use stopwatches (independent timekeepers to aid the ref), and some kind of video to aid the officials. Certainly, in other sports where there is a lot of ca$h $lo$hing about. Football’s credibility is not helped by the lack of these things. That’s not in relation to the weekends’ events, but the lack of these helpful devices stands out as an anomoly for the ‘richest game in the world’.

  207. Ole – Dowd could have known at the 88th minute he was adding 4 minutes 20 seconds. What went up on the board would still be (a minimum of) 4 minutes, and he needn’t therefore have any reason to ‘add’ time to get to 94:15 when they scored.

  208. The rugby style stop watch system would solve these issues.

  209. Rinseout @9:58
    Bill @2:55

    My thoughts exactly.

  210. Does anyone read the Arsenal Truth blog? I swear, funniest shit I ever read, because the author is likely to be less of a Gunner than pyles & honestly makes le-grove look like AKB’s!

  211. livearsenal,

That one usually seems a reasonable claim. Afterall, the boards usually display time to be added on in ones and dont show seconds. But if you look at those boards, they could well display 4:37 seconds.

But they don’t because it’s not such a precise science since there isn’t a stopwatch that’s pegged when play stops.

So you can be absolutely sure that the time added on, when it says 4 minutes, is 4 mins & not 4:20.

As I said before, the use of the word ‘minimum’ does not mean that the ref might have communicated 4:20 seconds, it means that between the 88th minute (or whatever minute) and the end of game. there might be stoppages to warrant a further extension to the game!

In our game, there was no stoppage whatsoever.

  212. I read one of the articles there a while ago Gadget and it pissed me off so much i havent been back. Similar to LG… I stick to ACLF, Arseblog and Goonerholic mainly, others as and when something interests me…

  213. Don’t get me started, Ole. I was furious, spitting, hopping mad about that. That ref was an absolute joke.

  214. I read one of the articles there a while ago Gadget and it pissed me off so much i havent been back. Similar to LG… I stick to ACLF, Arseblog and Goonerholic mainly, others as and when something interests me…

  215. sorry for double post – something wierd happening…

I stand corrected by you about the basketball shot. I confess that I have not been following basketball rules that closely and have stopped watching for a long time. I used to like watching the game on American TV in the winter. These days I find the 1st 3 quarters unexciting as the real action is really in the 4th quarter right up the last second when the final buzzer goes.

    Thanks.

  217. Maybe so Ole, but I’m not as certain of it as you. We’d need to speak to a top level ref to see exactly how they add time on, and even then, I’d bet it differs from one to another.

  218. I don’t see why the timekeeper can’t be completely independant from the ref.

  219. livearsenal,

I’m quite sure that 4 mins added on time means that and not 4 mins 20 secs.

How the ref actually computes how much time to be added on, or even how each ref interprets stoppages is another matter.

Of course they probably don’t follow the guidelines

  220. Thanks for the explanation Ole (and Finsbury for the comment). It does not seem to be an exact “science” at all – which probably does matter so much at Sunday League level but as Finsbury points out there is much at stake at EPL level (and not just in terms of money) and as we have the technology it seems odd not consider improving the situation and making the subject “less arbitary” or down to “human error.”
If the officials are in radio contact they could use an official timekeeper and request “stop/start the clock” which could also be displayed for all to see and remove arguments about impartiality.
It also might stop old Red Nose from gaining such an advantage!

  221. On the Porto ref debate, he did not handle it well, but if our players had been alert enough we would not have conceeded. It was the type of goal our players would score.

I am all for quick free kicks. Why should the team who have been “wronged” have to wait for the defending team to get ready?

  222. That could be good goonerandy, and could then blow the full time whistle themselves, irrespective of whether someone’s playing out time in the corner or blastin a shot into the roof of the net… it would make it fair all round.

  223. that was in response to the timekeeper thing by the way..

  224. anyway, some good debates today :-)

here’s to a good result tonight – with Fabianski playing amazingly… easy people.

  225. The attackers shouldn’t have to wait, andy, but the ref does need to signal that it’s an in-direct freekick, which he didn’t until after the freekick was taken… he does need to make sure it’s taken from the place on the turf where the foul was committed – which he didn’t… and he does need to make sure he isn’t standing right in the bloody way of the action.

It looked to me as if he actually moved to block Campbell at the time… but that can’t be right… he was just shit at his job unfortunately.

  226. Limpar – He did block Campbell. It was bad refereeing, but the goal could have been avoided. Still….old news.

  227. More importantly – I am going to have to sub Rooney out of the dream team, underperforming badly.

Chamakh has to be in the frame, or Berbatov… Hmm – decisions, decisions!

  228. Matt, you were absolutely caning it the last time I checked. I am being made to rue my anti-Malouda stance badly. Injuries to Walcott and Fabs have not helped either. Still, it’ll all even itself out. I reckon I’ll be challenging come Christmas.

  229. sczchzvnblurgh comments

“I’m ready to play at highest level but I need a club that believes in a 20-year-old. In Arsenal there’s no such bravery. My main goal is to play for Arsenal, but if there’s a move option, we’ll have words.”

If these are true then is that the most untrue statement of all time?

  230. Dondagooner (on Desigunner’s blog) says:
    September 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm

I went to White Hart Lane yesterday, and noticed how green and lovely their pitch was. So i summoned over the groundsman and asked him what his secret was, his reply was:
“Well i do nothing, just every (other) Saturday afternoon we put £100m worth of sh-t over the pitch and it works wonders”

  231. Dropped down to 5th LA – not good!

I had 1 storming week early on with a Theo Hat trick, but have tailed off a bit since…

Rooney not firing for me hasn’t helped, and Theo getting injured made me use a Sub for that…

I am with you on that, Malouda seems the obvious choice at the moment…

  232. Zyziec on Goonerholic’, translating from the original Szcezney interview said: “Also, he is very surprised Almunia is #1 keeper ahead of Fabianski, “If you want to win, then you need to put out the best players, not the oldest ones. If you want to win the title, then the best keeper at Arsenal needs to be in goal”

    Interviewer: “Who is that?”

WS: “Before the season started I thought is was Lukas”

  233. Fantastic Finsbury!!!

  234. Lol @ Finsbury, 4:29

Perhaps we should play them Spurs more often at the Emirates then, could do wonders for our pitch as well :)

  235. Geo,

I checked it out today, and the article truely convinced me the guy is not an Arsenal supporter. I’d have commented but I figured why bother.

  236. Any word on the line-up?

  237. I had a look at Arsenal Truth, it is “self righteously doomerish”, unlike some of the other blogs of similar nature.

By the way, the atmosphere at le-grove seemed to have become a little positive from the last time I checked it!

  238. Was interested today that the paragon of footballing virtue Mr. Stanly Collymore is perfecting the art of pots calling kettles black with his broadside on Match of the Day.

Me thinks he’s just bitching because BBC fired his arse in 2004 – I forget why, but the Daily Wail describes him as a football analyst.

Also worth reading Martin Samuel’s response to Collymore’s alternative to MOTD – damn hilarious.

Collymore should follow the old adage of removing the log in his eye before trying to grapple with the speck in someone else’s eye.

  239. I think Wenger will take this game more seriously than in previous Carling cups because its Tottenham. I see him playing fewer kids … may be 3 at most and the rest will come from the full squad. Too right too as we need to win this one and besides its been a while since we’ve won a trophy and it would be good to get to wembley again : )

  240. Sly Sports News have ARsenal’s team tonight as:

    Fabianski
    Eboue, Nordveit, Djourou, Gibbs
    Eastmond, Denilson, Lansbury
    Randall, JET, Vela

  241. Quite honestly, Luke, I think he probably feels he’s got no choice because nearly all the top kids are on loan or injured. Ramsey, Frimpong, Nordtveit, Lansbury is 50-50…of that vintage, only Wilshere and Gibbs are fit and around. And the next crop is a bit too young and inexperienced.

Too right too as we need to win this one and besides its been a while since we’ve won a trophy and it would be good to get to wembley again

    Hear hear!

  242. DS

That’s about the strongest team we could realistically field.

  243. Great to see Nordveit get a run out, I thought he was impressive during pre-season. Haven’t seen Randall play on the right before (i think), always thought he was a midfielder.

Great line up though, our defense looks pretty solid.

  244. I thought Nordveit was injured.

  245. @Fun – it will be interesting to see whether he’s gone for a Carling cup bench or an insurance policy bench….

‘Appy Harry is also making noises about including some youngsters, but he’s also talking about Nico Kranjcar and Palacios – who apparently can’t get a game in his very talented and strong squad that is better than Arsenal.

  246. She WORE!

  247. She WORE!
    She wore a yellow ribbon,
She wore a yellow ribbon in the merry month of May…
    And when!
    I asked!
Oh why she wore that ribbon,
She said it’s for the Arsenal and we’re going to Wembley…
    Wembley!
    Wembley!
We’re the famous Arsenal and we’re going Wembley…
    Wembley!
    Wembley!

  248. From Cesc’s twitter,

“Hate being injured and not being able to help the team, but wish them good luck agains spurs tonight! Come on lads!”(sic)

  249. Tonight’s game is a very big game for both Fabianski and JET, but for different reasons.

I fear for Wookash because if he screws the pooch, his stock with Arsenal fans will be shot to pieces; and for JET, it’s an opportunity for him to announce himself to the world.

  250. Of course that probably won’t be the formation. Eboue might be RW with Eastmond RB and Randall more central. But then when you play total football who knows?

  251. What impresses me the most is that with Vermaelen out, and Koscielny and Squillaci – Sagna and Clichy rested for first team duties, we can still field a defense of His Highness King Eboue, Nordveit, Djourou and Gibbs.

Argueably, that’s a stronger defensive unit than most teams in the EPL have.

  252. Tsk, tsk, Darius. Shouldn’t that be His MAJESTY King Eboue?

  253. yeah, expected line, I expected Jacky Boy instead of Randall..

  254. line up*

  255. @Fun – Shame on me and my apologies to His Majesty King Eboue. I only go to see him.

  256. Noticed an interesting thing after watching that video of Youth FA cup, posted byt Deano; our full backs do not press their man at all..allow them to cross the ball. Everyone can see this is is the case with Clichy & Sagna, but now I feel they are not being trained to press, from the academy itself. Last 3 years at least, a good amount of goals conceded by us have been because we allow the opponent winger or full back to cross the ball way too easily..

  257. 2-1 to The Arsenal, tonight

  258. oh shit i just went on arsenal truth, what a f*cking depressing blog that is!!!!! 10x worse then le grove and thats saying something

  259. my prediction is 1-1 and penalties

  260. Pat Rice is still there? According to Lee Dixon that’s what he drums into the fullbacks – stop the cross.

  261. I read the first few Arsenal Truth blogs. They appeared to be aimed at destabilising the current Arsenal board and management team. I think it is written by Jabba the Hut’s PR team as part of his campaign to take our club over.

  262. Confirmed team: Fabianski, Eboue, Djorou,, Kos, Gibbs, Lansbury, Wilshere, Denni, Rosicky, Nasri, Vela.

  263. thats a pretty strong team

  264. That’s more like it. Well done, Matty Boy.

That’s a clever selection for me. Lots of midfield workrate in there… just got to make sure Nas and Tom and Henri get up and support Carlito.

    Come On You Gunners!

  265. Bit disappointed in that team if im honest.
It gives us the best chance of winning true, however i really felt that one of Eastmond or JET deserved a start, especially over Lansbury.

    COYG

  266. Cmon ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  268. Arsenals Afro i have no idea what you are complaining about because to be honest, i thought our midfield trio would be randall eastmond denilson which isnt exactly encouraging for a big game

    The balance is right.

They are playing their 3rd choice ‘keeper

Theyve got a bunch of players nobody has heard of (doesnt really make a difference in that respect)

We have a surprisingly strong midfield.

    Come On Arsenal….

  269. Pletikosa, Naughton, Bassong, Caulker, Livermore; Bentley, Palacios, Sandro, Assou-Ekotto; Pavlyuchenko, Giovani.

Our team should walk all over this bunch!

  270. Arsenal

Fabianski, Koscielny, Djourou, Eboue, Gibbs, Rosicky, Nasri, Denilson, Wilshere, Lansbury, Vela

  271. Shhh! Hold it down, keysersoze!

  272. Arsenal team: Fabianski, Eboue, Koscielny, Djourou, Gibbs, Lansbury, Denilson, Wilshere, Rosicky, Nasri, Vela.

Subs: Almunia, Sagna, Clichy, Arshavin, Chamakh, Eastmond, Emmanuel-Thomas

    from the .com

  273. Have we just been out childrened? By Spurs?!

  274. iraq goals seems to be down – any other good streams pls

  275. …and by that I mean; ‘out-childrened’.

  276. By which, of course, I mean; ‘out-Carling Cupped’.

    Oh I give up.

  277. AW

“for the first time spurs are dealing with the early season fixture congestion arsenal have been dealing with for years”

thats how you say, “we’re the bigger club” with class. van der vaart/ arry pay attention

  278. hahah limpar

  279. This was posted earlier, MDGunner.

    http://atdhe.net/24515/watch-tottenham-vs-arsenal

    Never used it before, myself…

  280. Zap,

I saw that lineup too and it surprised me. That must be just about the strongest CC team The Arsenal have fielded in some time. Of course His Majesty King Eboue by himself qualifies as just about our strongest CC team in a century. All hail the King!

  281. Actually, no. My mistake. We’ve not been ‘out-yooted’ at all. It’s only that our yoots are closer to the first team, or… how do you say?… ‘better’ than their yoots… so the names are more familiar.

Panic over. Crack on boys. Give ‘em hell.

  282. ZAP

It’s not really a complaint just a side note really.
With Fabregas and Ramsey out, the creative source will be one of Nasri, Wilshere or Rosicky.

Yet all three are playing today, even though they’ve just played quite a few games in a small amount of time.

Wilshere started on saturday against Bolton, Braga and Sunderland.
Nasri, who has just come back from injury startd against Braga and Sunderland.
While Rosicky also played against Sunderland.

Now in a team where we really dont want any injuries to any of these players right now, i dont see the point in them all playing. Especially with players like Eastmond and JET who can come in and do a job.

Sorry for the long winded post. Anywoo lets show them spuds how footballs really played!

    COYG!!

  283. Arsenal.

  284. Thanks Limpar, just found it too. Magic

  285. Is there anyone out there with the stats who can drum up the average age of the two starting lineups? I would be very interested in seeing how they compare.

  286. Fuck me our bench is strong.

  287. 6 injured. Yet can make 8 changes from Saturday and it looks a very strong team.

  288. 10 perfectly good suits ruined by the Sp*ds badge.

  289. Given all the vitriol against Wenger, Arsenal, and the chosen way of life that is AFC I thought this was appropriate (thanks to G4E for originally posting this)

    Come on you Gunners!

Until the philosophy which hold one Arsenal player superior
    And another
    Inferior
    Is finally
    And permanently
    Discredited
    And abandoned -
    Everywhere is war -
    Me say war.
And until the ignoble and unhappy Fans
    that hold our players
    Denilson
    Song
    And Eboue
    in sub-human dissent
    Have been toppled,
    Utterly destroyed -
    Well, everywhere is war -
    Me say war.
    War in the east,
    War in the west,
    War up north,
    War down south -
    War – war -
    Rumours of war.
    And until that day,
    The Arsenal Club
    Will not know peace,
We Arsenals will fight – we find it necessary -
And we know we shall win
    As we are confident
    In the victory

  290. Funny how we can have such an overwhelmingly superior record against this shower of shit and yet all the commentator wants to talk about is the CC game they won.

  291. Penalty.

  292. I’m playing cliché bingo. Just ticked off 5 years without a trophy. Waiting for one pass too many and Arsenal want to walk it into the net, are trying to score the perfect goal (both said as if they were bad things).

  293. Excellent start. Dominant. And the Away Boys are out-singing the home crowd. Now for a goal…

  294. Bloody ‘ell, I wish my pasties were ready. I’m hungry.

    Just like this team.

  295. Ticked off the old ‘win any trophy and it’ll kick start the season’ bollocks.

  296. Thank you, Henri.

  297. Good work lad!

  298. Kids link up and score! Totts go down.

  299. Sensational.

  300. Henri!!!!!

  301. What a goal.

  302. Cue… really pleased for Lansbury.

  303. sick. filleted

  304. Can anyone suggest a free live stream of the game

  305. We are outplaying the Sp*ds. Keep those oles coming!

  306. damn. how many passes has that been?

  307. How many passes???

  308. likewise pacgunner!

  309. I agree with pacgunner.

Bit early for the ‘oles’ but who can blame them. Strange looking tactics for a home side these…

  310. I guess that egoism is why Bentley is not with us? He had so much space, why shoot?

  311. Tosser Bentley

  312. bently problem is his slicked back hair.

  313. Bobby, there’s a stream posted at 7.35pm.

  314. help out a fellow gooner. I need an address of a good feed, please.

  315. that was an ambitious shot

  316. I love Denilson. There I said it.

  317. Bobby I posted a link but its stuck in mederation…..type my p2p into google.

  318. Thanks Limpar – you rock. Great quality too.

  319. *moderation

  320. What’s up with that? Totts rotational fouling Wilshere?

  321. Hope Rosicky gets a goal.

  322. Evil – just said the same thing. Targeting JW like teams did Ramsay last year.

  323. Don’t know about you guys but I could do with the second goal about now.

  324. amazing pressing upfront !!!

  325. thats 2 offsides that were very very close.

  326. what a crap linesman. that is the second time he has given phantom offside.

  327. Someone from Spurs needs to get a red card

  328. dirty ass sp*rs.

  329. Wenger leaving early! Sp*ds are simply too boring to watch.

  330. Very begrudging praise from these commentators! Excellent first half. Some of the one-touch passing early on was astonishingly good. Brilliant movement, brilliant workrate. How good is Koscielny’s first touch?! Amazing. We really should be out of sight by now. I thought Gibbs was onside.

Does AW get to give the half-time teamtalk?

  331. great first half for a stronger than usual arsenal side in the carling cup. we kept possession and moved the ball extremely well with fast passing and good movement. the sp*ds starting lineup was by far the weaker side on paper and it showed in their play. expect to see ‘arry make a few changed at the half.

  332. Limpar-yeah thats why he left early. You could see him texting the bench.

I thought Gibbs was onside too.

We have been unlucky with the final ball through about 5 or 6 times….the law of averages suggests that at least one will come of in the second half.

  333. How many times do officials have to see rotational fouling to get the message?

Usual bloody awful linesman. Might cope in a Rotherham versus oldham game. No bloody idea of what skill and pace can do.

I can see this ref sending someone off though. He seems fairer and quicker than most.

  334. LimparAssist. i thought gibbs was onside too.

AW half-time talk is going to be a mixture of mumbling about his stupid touchline ban and how he was right about the youth project. there is nothing to complain about on how we played

  335. I saw that deano. Looked like Banfield did the plumber’s wince when Rosicky was limping, and then said “Take him off”. Then AW started texting. Thought it was a “Get him outta there!” text.

  336. A few observations:

1 – David Bentley is desperate to score on us. So desperate in fact its hurting his own performance. Looks like he still wants t prove something after forcing a move and not doing very well at Spurs.

2 – Referee needs to get a better hold of the game, he has let a number of reckless tackles go and I think it may get out of hand.

  337. that god damn linessman, gives us off when we are on and them on when they are off

  338. Off fucking side.

  339. Great performance by the linesman. I think he is due a promotion from the FA! That’s how you are supposed to perform in a game against Arsenal!

  340. To easy to score against us,, same old shit!

  341. What I really meant to say: that linesman is a f*cking c*nt.

  342. the text commentary I am following says Fabianski let the ball through his hands. Any truth to that or was it too powerful?

  343. Fabianski is not good enough, im convinced

  344. @Gris Gris
He got a hand to the ball, but it was not enough. I wouldnt say that the shot was too powerful, but it had quite some spin on it.

  345. To easy to moan same old JO

  346. Thanks Evil, it’s amazing how people are so quick to blame the keeper, isn’t it? eh, Raz?

  347. Wow, look who is chanting “Always cheating”. The ref granted you a sympathy goal, after all.

  348. Go fuck yourself Steww

  349. Its easy to score against anyone when your alowed to shoot from a yard offside…

  350. *Insert abuse against linesman here*

2 false offsides against us in the first half and now this.

Fabianski could have done better, he got his hand to it and maybe could have been able to turn it round the post.

Oh well too late now, lets get on with the game.

  351. Keeper at full stretch ball on the ground. How would you blame him? Player clean through and offside.

  352. Its another soft goal, cant really see the positives in that, we have been dominating with no end result,,

  353. You are an Arsenal fan I assume JO? You blame us when the linesman makes a dreadful decision.

  354. Don’t waste your breath on JO. probably a spud here to wind us up.

  355. Off side or not Steww it was a soft goal. Dont blame the linesmen.
We are playing to many one touch passes in and around the box and giving the ball away, it amazes me some times how easily the opposition can cut through our defense bye being direct. I wish we would try being a little more direct around the box.

  356. You’re right klon. Just a wind up.

  357. How is Flappers doing i cant see the game???

  358. No idea who you mean Duke.

  359. Dukegoonem, he’s only fucked up once its his best performance

  360. Lemmon is SO bad … wtf

  361. If you mean our keeper. He made one poor kicked clearance in the first half. All else has been absolutely fine.

  362. Brilliant Kos tackle.

  363. KOSCIELNY!!!! He is very close if not already world class, right?

  364. kos what a cracking tackle

  365. All he needs is one or two more seasons of experience and he will be one of the best.

  366. Ohh, we look so much better than these Spuds

  367. Assou-Ekotto being on the same pitch as High Highness, that’s the only foul I could see.

  368. I love Koscielny.

  369. the big gun are coming.shame no jet

  370. Cham and Ars coming on – Wenger wants to win this one. We can’t get bogged down in replays

  371. steww are you blind? Keanes weak shot went through his hand for fuck sake, another disillusioned AKB

  372. This is a strong team were playing tonight

  373. no replay for this game. it ends today. extra time then pks.

  374. they only look strong because you are so weak, Raz

  375. Gris Gris

    I Lol’d

  376. MD, no replays tonight mate, all decided on the night

  377. Sorry, my bad

  378. I hate linesmen.

  379. Even the commentator agreed the Spuds goal was offside. How unusual is that?

  380. i thought we had it when their keeper flapped at that free kick.

  381. I have thoroughly enjoyed this game so far.

  382. We could do without ET with the players we have out there

  383. Flappy you Twat

  384. Who do you support Raz? Why not go find a blog for your own team and leave us alone.

  385. So we would have won this game by now if the officials wern’t so inept.

  386. If we do bring ET on, he should definitely go in goal with those long arms of his.

  387. Exactly Wrighty

  388. About fucking time we got something

  389. Penalty!!

  390. My nerves are shot!!

  391. Penalty!!!!!!!!!!

  392. Fabianski world class dont make me laugh. hes had his last chance

  393. Naaaaasri

  394. the man who should have takin the pk over the weekend

  395. Now please tell me why the fuck he did not take the spot kick on Saturday!

  396. love that kid

  397. Get in.

What a game, I know its a second rate compitition but I just love carling cup nights, always played without fear.

What a player Kosser has turned out to be

  398. Another penalty!

  399. Sp*rs are SO stupid.

  400. haha, yes, those cheating twats

  401. SUCK IT HARRY! SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER SAMIR NASRI

  402. Naaasri

  403. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!
    NASSRRRRIIIII

  404. OK fuck off and lick your wounds no Raz

  405. Hehehe. Turns out you go straight to penalties in this cup.

  406. smooth as silk, at a boy nasri

  407. Thata helped the nerves some what

  408. How does the saying go;

    Same old Arsenal always cheat………..

  409. Spuds leaving in their droves.

What great supporters of a great team!

  410. If this is what happens when we get Spud trolls on here, then welcome Spuds, thanks for making the experience most pleasurable!

  411. You really are a windup merchant arnt you Steww,,

  412. How many penalties does Chamakh want to win?

The new signings are looking the buisness.

    Absoloutly terrific.

  413. Thank God!

Away fans have been amazing again. they were loudest when we were on the back foot.

  414. Limpar
    hehehe

  415. Even when fouled by two players at the same time and on the ground Denilson keeps the ball. That’s the kind of player he is!

  416. Arsenal totally dominant!

  417. i think if my memory serves me right,it was messrs darius and ateeb that were propagating the theory of “he who falls in the box doesn’t take the penalty” a few days ago, well gentlemen,…..i told you so.

    NASRIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

  418. “shall we wait for the dvd” i love it

  419. 1 – 4 ARSHAVIN!

  420. Arshavin

  421. more goals in this game, for us that is.

  422. Shall we bring a DVD out…

  423. @ rahi

It’s not a theory – Arsene confirmed that in his post-match interview with ATVO. It’s a general policy so they don’t have to follow it every time.

    ***

    Andrei!!! Let’s go for 5-1!!!!

  424. get in!!
spuds are sunk for sure now.

  425. Arshavin – you the man!

  426. Nasri hattrick?

    Any takers?

  427. Good save by Fabianski!

  428. KOS SAYS NO. Not today Keane, you cunt!

  429. Bye bye Spuds fans – there’s another 15 minutes yet!

  430. As Spurs fans leave the stadium in droves, the Arsenal fans sing – “Is there a fire drill”…

    LMFAO!

    SamirNasri is the dogs chuffers.

  431. White Hart Lane full of dancing reds… spuds crying on TV… ahhh. Normal service resumes.

  432. @ LimparAssist on September 21, 2010
    at 9:59 pm

    ha ha ha ha

  433. Matty boy- we are not that classless.

  434. Same old Arsenal….Always winning!!!

  435. Arry looks erm…goormless.

  436. Have they had a man sent off?

  437. good game for us. AW served his touchline ban, Song got his one game ban out of the way, and we mop the floor with the sp*ds.

    a good day

  438. 1 loose cannon – lol, I know, I was being rather churlish to piss the trolls off even more. No commemorative plates being sold after this one! Just immense satisfaction for us fans and onto West Brom.

  439. Arsenal fans singing:

“Oh when the saints” or am I hearing things?

  440. Traveling Gooners have done us proud tonight. I have really enjoyed this considering it’s only the Carling Cup.

  441. so when our dvd is out

  442. Too bad for Gibbs. Wenger has taken this game seriously and it is the right thing to do just to put the Spuds in their place because they’ve been talking shite for a long time how finally they are getting better than Arsenal bla bla bla. A number 5 would be nice

  443. Kos- absolute class….

  444. Matty bOy- I knew you were sarcastic with the DVD sugestion. You can how our players are super fit that the Spuds , they simply run out of legs

  445. Kos- absolute class….

    Agreed.

  446. Brilliant. Normal service has been resumed.

  447. Great result – can we have the DVD in a global format to repeatedly play here in the US too please?

  448. FG….agreed…no need to put out DVDs…its all in a days work…

  449. Cannot wait to see droopy’s interview.

  450. Isn’t he Arseman. Sheer quality. How the anti Arsenal Arsenal ‘fans’ moaned about him and once again Arsene knew better.
Great night – one in the eye for the Spuds but more importantly one in the eye for the cowardly defeatist surrender monkey fifth columnists among our own support.

  451. same old arsenal always winning

  452. Van the faart, who are ya!!!!!

  453. Superb game, we were always in control. Such slick passing and movement left the opposition stunned many a times. We looked more like the home side.

Arseman, thanks for the link! The stream was great! Nothing like a bit of mashed potatoes to start of the morning here in S’pore. Cheers!

  454. Kos is gonna be a legend

  455. Wilshere MotM for me. Closely followed by Kos, Denilson, and Nasri. Eboue, Lansbury, Rosicky, Gibbs… too many top performers to mention.

I liked it when Gibbs peeled Lemmon, and then about ten seconds later so did Kos. So much ball won in midfield tonight… great tenacity in the tackle. Spuds never had a look-in really. Should really have been 5 or 6 nil… but we’ll take that.

Bentley missed a sitter… Spuds finally wound their grimey little necks back in… A fine evening.

  456. Steww…who ever doubted wenger is surely tasting their own foot…in their mouth..

  457. Bloody hell Everton knocked out by Brentford on penalties.

  458. And some silly numpties on here let their masks slip too. Quite funny really. JO, Raz, SOLGOONER… I’m looking at you, you gang of fucking pricks. Who fucking bitches and moans when we’re fully playing the spuds off their own pitch? Wind-up merchants. You’re not Arsenal, that much is obvious, so you better change your names for next time, girls. Or just fuck off.

    Arsenal.

  459. Didn’t see the game, but wonder what the Spuds will do to commemorate this event?

4-1 on their own turf and in their favorite competition, must be worth something.

  460. YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  461. why is that bad deano,,

  462. They are having a TERRIBLE season, deano.

I hope we get a home draw against lower league opposition next round and then we can see the kids.

  463. Im getting a Koscielny 6 shirt

  464. i love the away fan siging “should we make a dvd” :D legendaire away fan

  465. Limps at 10.25 – comment of the night.

  466. Samir nasris talking english!!!!!! 1st time ive heard him..

  467. Yes, lordgunner, that was classic. Along with “Is there a fire drill?” as they all ran home. Fucking hilarious!

  468. I think we now have a squad where any player can slot into the first team. So we dont really have a “reserve” team like in the past.

  469. Zap, I want one too.

  470. Im with steww on that, Limpar that was a brilliant comment!

  471. “And some silly numpties on here let their masks slip too.

    Arsenal.”

Well said LA, and it went strangely quiet when we got what our play deserved.

  472. Thanks for the credit Gris Gris, I was actually looking for it.

  473. Chamakh you are beautiful, ya marouaaaaaaane ya Omri habibiiiiiiiia

  474. Agree with that, Fungunner. Tonight had to be a strong team, but I hope to see some of the younger players in the next round.

Anyways, I thought Lansbury looked a bit like Parlour tonight.

  475. People need to stop hating on Arshavin…

Provided the 2 passes that led to the penalties…

    Scored the 4th…

    Lazy?….i dont think so

  476. LIMPAR YOU ARE A RUDE CRUDE IDIOT I HAVE SUPPORTED AFC FOR OVER FIFTY YEARSS, AND AM ALLOWED TO SAY THAT FABIANSKI MADE HIS USUAL MISTAKE CHESNY NEEDS TOO GET A CHANCE IN THE CC

  477. I think the Spuds should bring out a commemorative fire extinguisher just in case that alarm goes off again.

  478. I want Stoke at home and absolutely crush them with roughly the same team as tonight..

  479. Men of the Match – KOS, Jacky, Gibbsy

  480. Oh pipe down, SOLGOONER. If you’re not a wind-up merchant then you’re just a cunt.

  481. ooh ooh Harry’s on

  482. Zap- not bad just a surprise.

    Well done Limpar.

Koscielny…..how the bbloody hell does Wenger do it? I mean….how may times can I alow even a single percent of doubt creep in when this man signs someone I’ve never heard of? Kos is something very special. I will be very surprised if he is not a full international for Poland or France by the end of the year. He could play for both….at the same time.

Hope Rosciky and Gibbs are okay. The whole team are stars.

  483. So you picked up on the only flaw of the game in our team Solgooner?

That kind of tell us what you’re looking for when you’re watching Arsenal for 50 years?

  484. Limp, i thought they had 2-3 sent off during the 2nd period!

  485. One Arsene Wenger, there’s only ONE Arsenal wenger….waaaaaaan arsene weeeeenger

  486. Imagine if our players were as bad on the pitch as people like SOLGONER are off it.

  487. GUYS leave SOLGOONER and co. ALONE for fucks sake!! Just ignore them and enjoy tonight!

  488. Ohhhhh…..to be a goooooner!

  489. And what a great response to the Sunderland disappointment.

  490. OOU – “Anyways, I thought Lansbury looked a bit like Parlour tonight.”

I said the exact same thing to my Brother whilst watching the game in the the second half. He does nothing particularly amazing, but everything he does, he seems to put his heart into it. Definitely one to keep for me, a great squad player who can push his way into the first team one day.

  491. Honestly? Not really a surprise. The team we played is not really opposition in my eyes. We usually boss them home and away. Now if we had to play Stoke, Blackburn or so, that would have been a real test but THEM? Almost like playing a League Two side.

  492. ooooooh to oooohhh to be ooohhh to be a GOONER!

We should all be nice to James tomorow….

  493. it was such a delight to look at those empty seats, i am pretty sure Emirates wont have that, if (IF) we manage to lose that way!

    ****

I almost pulled my hair out seeing Nari isnt being subbed, he was having the worst game of his Arsenal career till 75th min or so. But he paid back manager’a faith in him with a solid performance in the rest of the game.

    ****

  494. Nah – sorry Zap tonight was a great victory over our oldest rivals and over the traitors – so we gloat.

  495. mj, dont leave Nasri out of it. The guy was brilliant.

    that performance was for Ateeb.

  496. we should savour this – its not everyday you beat Tottenham Hotspur of the Champions league ;)

  497. Good men all.

    We all know the exceptions.

    Hats off to you Limpar.

    Have another alcopop on me.

  498. G4E you missed SOMETHING!

  499. Loool ok i was just gonna say myself..

Fuck off SOLGOONER you cunt you sound like the kind of prick who just loves when we make errors to shout it from the rooftops it feels like you shout everything you say its bedtime solgooner go to sleep bye

  500. my 10.44 post is the reply, Paul

    @Deano – Droopy!!! LMAO!!!!

FunGunner – I totally agree with you regarding the away fans, hats off to them!!

  501. It tastes so sweet

  502. You have to wonder: if the sp*ds can’t field a competitive team for the CC, how are they going to surive with the pressure of three or four competitions at the same time? I fear that they will get kicked out early in the FA Cup, not make it past the group stages in the CL and obviously finish somewhere mid-table. If they weren’t the Sp*ds you could almost feel sorry for them and their sympathic players like VdV, Keane or Assou-Ekotto!

  503. MOTM: Arsenal & David Bentley.

  504. I will hopefully see it tonight MJ

    WE OWN THE LANE
    (Somebody else said that)

  505. Gallas….hahahhahahahaha

  506. Here are my negetives from the game -

    -Linesman
    -No JET & Eastmond
    -Right side of defence
    -Fatigue for the squad

  507. I wonder what’s a certain Mr V D Vaart is upto

  508. Team for WBA

    Almunia
    Sagna Squillaci Vermaelen Clichy
    Eastmond Rosicky
    Diaby
    Chamakh Vela Arshavin

  509. ‘Arsenal leave it late’

    Thats it Sky (not)Sports?????
wonder what would have been the headline incase of a reverse scoreline

  510. Great game. Lansbury means business. I hope he makes it at Arsenal.

The whole team was fantastic today. Wilshere is amazing to watch, real class. Loses the ball a bit, but works harder to get it back. Impressed by Gibbs as always. Denilson was back to his intercepting best.

The player that I enjoy most watching these days is Kos. Vermalean will need to be at his best to get back into the team. It’s the first time after years that we’re missing our first choice CB, and we don’t have to worry about the third choice, as Squaillaci seems to be a really good Cb as well.

P.S Solgooner, this whole 50 year arsenal watching crap is getting old now. So fuck off.

  511. why not Song, Zap?

  512. bradys right foot

Kozzer = A modern version of Adams what a performance.

  513. I was too nervous to post earlier, but I’m ecstatic that we’ve so emphatically put those jumped up spuds back in their box. Arsene deserves that after the sh*t week he’s had.

  514. SOLGOONER _ You sir are a effen disgrace. On a night we are playing the Spuds and you use the occasion to slate and heap sh*t on our own player. Simply to serve your selfish, negative agenda. Fifty years count for nothing in your disservice to the club.
    Shame on you!

  515. Only downside for me was Gibbs injury. Champagne moment either Eboue’s audacious first time flick of an over the top ball back to his centre half whilst under pressure running back down the wing, or Gael’s wonderful dribble down the left had me up and applauding.

  516. Congrats to Goonerdom across the world.
    A night to savour.

  517. van der vaart is no doubt getting sucked off by his hot missus goin ‘i need this love for joining this sent of c**ts’ ha ha

  518. Here are my positives from the game:
    -Wilshere..no need for explanation
    -Gibbs..surely close to 1st team
    -Koscielny..Classy, brilliant player
-Lansbury..best night of his career so far
    -Confidence for players
-Our Away Fans and the DVD chant which was hilarious
-Outplaying spuds on their own turf
-That little kid crying (a bit mean..but come on nobody seriously felt sorry for him)
    -Them leaving in their drones
    -Them looking demoralised

Kind of outweighing negatives arent they mj lol

  519. Yeah, MB. Really tenacious and hardworking player. Definitely a valuable guy to have in the squad.

Tiredness is a bit of a worry, but then Sagna, Song, Squillaci will all be fresh – while Clichy, Chamakh and Arshavin only played a few minutes of high-pressure football. The rest was a stroll. Diaby and Vermaelen should be back as well.

Also, we didn’t have to do too much chasing this evening; I can’t remember the Spuds stringing many passes together.

  520. NJ Gooner @ 7.35 – superb stuff!

  521. Really hope we can field a good first team when we meet the Chavs. Hope Cesc is back by then. But then again, we can rely Rosicky Nasri and Wilshere to pull the strings from midfield.

Given our injury records I doubt we would get to see the first team that Arsene would field had all players been fit. Who would make the team is anyone’s guess.

We still have Bendtner, Rvp, and Theo to return.

  522. They’ll get it in the end when it comes to Denilson – he was awesome tonight.

  523. Mj, because he’s suspended….

  524. I didn’t mean to gloat, Bentley missed a few chances!

    -

The clip through to Chamack (from Lansbury?), very nice.

    -

I’d recommend a spud free Arabic stream next time. The shock of seeing Graeme Souness on the panel was almost as funny as the result. He was full of praise for the Gunners, from what I could make out, underneath the dubbing.

  525. I’m not sleeping any time soon, im staying ’till they do the repeat at midnight!

  526. absolutely Zap!
    i wonder where Spur’s squad stength ??
    Kracjar anyone?? LOL

  527. bradys right foot

Ateeb don’t forget Ramsey . Deni might get overlooked tonight being outshone by young Jack but i thought he played very well also.

  528. Finsbury haha you would be surprised the people they get on arabic sports channels like al jazeera..

  529. me either, Zap!
Song was suspended for this one, so he’s playing on Saturday!

  530. In a way, I’m glad there was extra time because of that offside goal. 1-0 and a disallowed goal would have enabled them to say that we squeaked past. But losing 4 goals to 1. At home. No getting round that.

  531. Mj gunner- Had we lost this game it would’ve been a massive psychological blow. We simply had to win it.
We have West Brom at home next and that is not a bad fixture to have plus the white shite lane isn’t far its like a home game for us. So it a good thing we had a strong team. I’m just hoping Fabregas will be back for the Chavs. That is a huge game for us. We need to beat them to finally send a message out.

  532. OOU, spot on; he showed in the 2nd half on saturday, what we miss without him in the MF

  533. Is he, oh yas!!!

  534. I think even Stewart Robson is starting to fall for the Denny magic. It gets everyone in the end.

  535. I agree 1lc, but what, is that in response to something i said??

  536. Djorou went largely unnoticed tonight (by me anyway)which is not necessarily a bad thing, great to see him getting minutes under his belt though. Mind you, the way Kos played tonight, Djorou could have got the cigars out.

  537. yeah, with a li’l bit of fatigue, FG@11.09
its a bit of a concern..but we’ll worry about that tomorrow! let the celebrations begin!

    KOS for France!

  538. For chelsea:
    Almunia
    Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Clichy
    Song Wilshere Diaby Nasri
    Chamakh Arshavin

I doubt that team will be getting pushed around that much…..

Diaby is the key, we missed him for the home games vs united and chelsea last season

  539. Does anyone know when the 4th round draw is?

  540. Sorry to bring up Stoke on a night like this, but anyone see the horrific challenges on Moussa Dembele tonight?

    http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Stoke-2-0-Fulham-Daily-Mirror-match-report-Mark-Hughes-accuses-Andy-Wilkinson-of-endangering-Moussa-Dembele-s-career-article585793.html

Hope AW has something to say about it. Belgian guy as well. Now it’s extra personal!

  541. Funny how when Denilson was thrust into the first team after the defections no one drooled over his maturity at such a young age.
Silly man – should have been born English shouldn’t he?
What a squad. When a CC line up looks so good with many fist choice injuries and loads of changes we still put out a brilliant team.

  542. I think teams must envy us. We have so f*cking many top class players for our team, I can only imagine that Wenger must be awake until 5am in the morning on match day until he has finally decided who to play. For the three midfield spots alone we have Cesc, Ramsey, Rosicky, Denilson, Diaby, Song, Wilshere, Nasri. That’s eight players for three spots. What other team can claim to have such depth in their squad?

  543. Evil, if only they were all fit at the same time though, which sadly will probably not happen

  544. Right off to bed. Goodnight people. Happy days.

  545. Over half a team out injured and we still had a subs bench of:

Almunia, Sagna, Clichy, Arshavin, Chamakh, Eastmond, Emmanuel-Thomas

Now that is strength in depth.

Excellent by the boys tonight. And great comment from LA about the usual suspects.

As FG posted, “normal service has resumed.”

  546. LOL Burnley 1-0 Bolton
    F*ck off now Mr Coyle

  547. “”That little kid crying (a bit mean..but come on nobody seriously felt sorry for him)”"

I wished they had not shown that at first, and then thought fvck it – it’s his parents fault for bringing him up as a Spud

  548. Zap,
Didn’t know they beamed up sports.
I had to switch away from the Beeb earlier, I think they had a Spud commentating. Not sure. Sounded like it.

The joy. I tuned back to the 5live commentary after Nasri had scored two penalties, but they’d switched games!

  549. Did any one see the comment by coyle:

”Anyone who knows anything about football will have understood my deciison to join bolton”

Any one who knows anything about life will know you are a C*nt!

  550. MD perhaps that was why he was crying. He wanted an Arsenal shirt for Christmas,

  551. For Zap and MD

  552. MJ- you listed Squad fatigue as one negative. But I think its Ok to play a strong team we can manage it.

Lovely, brentford beaten Everton and Burnley put one over Coyle.

Any streams out there for the highlights ?

  553. Arseman- Poor kid he should’ve supported Arsenal.

  554. 1LC…its sad…but then again it ain’t…what did he expect?

  555. Fantastic !!! What a night. !!

  556. MOTM – for me Kos, Lansbury, Denilson and Lil’ Jack all deserve a shout out!

My Vote – Koscielny – A legend in the making.

  557. 2 magical passes from Andre! thats what he’s all about!

  558. haha cheers arseman!

  559. Mj – he deserves a lot more credit than he gets…

  560. ”I’m not sleeping any time soon, im staying ’till they do the repeat at midnight!”

Okay i’m taking that back, i’m pretty tired!! Night all see you guys tomorrow.

  561. Wenger: ‘We can go for this competition too’

    oo i am loving it

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/34636/wenger-reaction

  562. AA – games [6+1] goals [4] plus assists. Not bad for a player out of form.

  563. loved the way Samir went all the way to the bench, kissing the badge..

  564. Gibbs done his metatarsal again…really hope it isn’t as serious as his last injury….

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/34636/wenger-reaction

  565. yeah 1lc, feel a bit sad for everton though..they are one of the few teams left who play football, fair & square as it should be. Not so good start for them to the season

  566. fantabulous video, deano
wenger had me in splits there
    LOL ”who wouldn’t”
    hahahaha

  567. Kos definetely motm. Poor james,u surely deserve a better team to support!

  568. All we need to do now is…Come up with a song for Kos!

    Any Ideas?

  569. From Big Al earlier:

“Anyways, I thought Lansbury looked a bit like Parlour tonight.”

    From Arsene after the game:

“He has not played for a long time and he is a bit like Ray Parlour ”

So Big Al was Arsene texting you during the game or are you really Arsene. :-p

  570. any videos for post match reaction?

  571. Wow that’s great, Dups! Matty Boy called it as well to be fair.

  572. F*ck Off Harry…

English Mangers = Bunch of Hypocrites

  573. Very pleased Arsene put out a strong side and supplemented it from the bench. We did the business–now that bad taste from Saturday has been washed out.

The cosmic order has happily been restored!

  574. Kos is rapidly becoming my favorite player. Great game. Now lets batter WBA and get our selves ready for the game at Stamford Bridge.

  575. Arseman @ 11.29
Thanks ;-) was that cling film on his glass poor little bugger?

  576. Now the (not so) Independent are siding with Spuds and claiming that Nasri dived for the first penalty.

  577. Devil's Advocate

Bloody hell Harry is a bad loser, isn’t he? He’s declaring to all and sundry that Nasri dived, what balderdash. He got beaten fair and square, and was shown how to play football, I wish somebody would stuff a stale pizza down his idiotic throat and make him shut the hell up. And going on about his players being tired and cramping up in extra time – not like they let us have a few extra substitutions, is it! He just pisses me off so damn much!

  578. ATVO commentators were questioning the first penalty. Sounded sort of disappointed with the result.

  579. Some observations:-

    (1) Gibbs wasn’t offside and shouldn’t have penalised.

    (2) Keane’s goal was offside and should have been penalised.

    (3) Nasri didn’t dive, didnt ask for a penalty and the ref made a good call.

    (4) The game should have been over after 45 minutes but we couldn’t craft a goal for all our possession.

    (5) Fabianski had very little to do throughout the game.

    (6) Spurs were absolutely muellered in the 1st half and came back strong in the 2nd -credit to them for that.

    (7) Kos was superb today. The summer doubters are probably eating humble pie now. He is looks to be the real deal.

    (8) Consequently, our defence looked strong last night.

    (9) Wilshire set up Lansbery for the goal. When was the last time an Englishman set up another Englishman for a goal at Arsenal?

    (10) Wilshire, Nasri, Denilson, Kos, Gibbs all deserve credit for their performance last night -they were magnicent.

    (11) Djourou did rather well given that he hasn’t had much match practice for so long. I was impressed despite his obvious rustiness and inevitable mistakes. Good return to duty.

    (12) Its only the Carling Cup.

  580. The problem with Harry’s accusations of diving is that we might find it hard to win penalties in the near future. We just have to make sure we don’t depend on a close decision like that in a game because the referees will not be looking to do us any favours.

  581. Passenal.

Harry’s accusation is a malicious attempt to deflect the reality the Spurs were crap. Arsenal could have complained that Keen was off-side by a country mile.

    Sour grap
    s. The ref gave the pen and Lee Probert isn’t inclined to do any favours for Arsenal. The Spuds were woeful and he just needs to be gracious in defeat.

The problem for Harry and his players is that they’ve spent the last few days bragging about how Tottenham is now bigger than Arsenal.

  582. hubris:
    hu·bris (hybrs) also hy·bris (h-)
    n.
    Overbearing pride or presumption; arrogance

  583. Poor Arry. Last night showed him just how far his squad is behind The Arsenal.

I see Stoke are continuing there record of trying to cripple fellow pro players. The dirty bastards need relegating and Pulis put away in some asylum.

  584. What a tackle on Lennon by Koscielny. The guys a star.

  585. And the usual suspects in the media are calling Wilkinson’s tackle clumsy and without intent.

    They’re still providing excuses….

Maybe until a top England player loses his career with an amputated leg, then they’ll take notice.

  586. Devil's Advocate

Listen to him whining about us fielding a stronger team than he expected… How funny is that, after years of being told we should take the Carling Cup more seriously! And not like we fielded our first eleven anyway. What a bitter pill for ‘Arry to swallow. ‘Coz now he has CL to worry about, he says. Don’t worry, ‘Arry, you won’t have to worry about CL for long.

  587. Advocate we still dont take it seriously but this was spurs and order had to be restored!!!N way we going to let them make more dvds at our expense.

  588. After a good game against Spurs, they play badly during defeat against WBA.
