Sunderland Preview & Small Clubs, Tiny Minds

On this day in 1949, Arsenal travelled to Sunderland and emerged with a share of the spoils, 1 – 1 draw. Indeed Arsenal has scored every time this fixture has arisen in this month, two 1 – 1 draws, two away wins and two home wins the net outcome of the six encounters.

The visit to Sunderland at tea-time brings back memories of a title-winning season, 1991s visit to Roker Park on a wet afternoon for a goalless draw, experimentally shown on TV in the early evening. It was a turgid affair that produced a point as the team closed in on top spot that season.

This time the only cloud that Arsenal travels under is from the storm of criticism in the media from those who cannot abide by the fact that Wenger spoke honestly about the less savoury side of the English game. Following on from the battering Wenger took from Allardyce (I’m surprised that the Walrus did not order a side portion of chips to go) and Coyle – Laurel & Hardy of the Premier League (appropriate really since Stan Laurel was a Lancastrian) – Twitchy joined in, anything to deflect attention away from his own shortcomings, and Stoke cried that nasty Mr Wenger had not said sorry for upsetting them or poor ickle Ryan Shawcross.

The latter actually beggars belief. Stoke claim they wrote to Wenger; Arsenal say the letter was addressed to Ivan Gazidis and responded to. Were it an unprovoked attack on the club, you could understand why The Potters were upset; it isn’t. Shawcross caused an injury of such severity that Aaron Ramsey has yet to play again. It is a concerted attempt on them to absolve their player of any blame, to claim he is as much a victim as Ramsey. It is a shameful episode and sums up everything which is wrong with football and is frankly pathetic.

Back to this afternoon. Arsenal travel knowing that they will have to win to remain in touch with Chelsea, Blackpool may have learned lessons from The Emirates but I doubt that they will get a result at Stamford Bridge. Wenger has no-one returning from injury so the squad rotation options are limited. The back four is likely to remain unchanged for this fixture but in midfield Wenger has scope. Denilson’s return is being seen as the opportunity for Song to rest. Personally I would expect Wilshere to drop out if the Brazilian plays and that is by no means certain.

The midfielder has ambitions to be seen as the English version of his captain, praising Cesc as a role model and with his displays so far, there is a possibility that he may realise those dreams. Much hard work is ahead but his attitude appears to be far better than David Bentley displayed when he was hailed as the English Bergkamp. Long may that continue.

Marouane Chamakh has become popular almost immediately, goals have helped but his willingness to work hard for the team as big a factor. YW Jr2 has already announced that he wants an Arsenal shirt with Chamakh on the back for his impending birthday – ‘Why not Cesc? Nah, he won’t be here next season‘. The Morrocan has given an interview this morning which revealed he is rather better educated than many of his peers, a Baccalaurete in Accountancy shows the player has more sense than the media would have you believe is ever shown by footballers.

This afternoon’s line-up I would expect Wenger to field is:

Almunia; Sagna, Koscielny, Squillaci, Clichy; Song, Denilson, Fabregas; Eboue, Chamakh, Arshavin

A winis essential and achievable at Sunderland. They have won and drawn in their first two fixtures this season at home and it will not be an easy match. But a title challenging team will win these matches.

Enjoy the match wherever you watch it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. 1st :)

I think Rosicky will play today.

    Arsenal to win 3-1

  2. I like the way Wenger is attracting pressure to himself and taking a significant amount of heat away from his team.

The reaction to his reality check on the culture of English football would be tragic if it wasn’t as funny as it is.

When for 2 days running, Adrian Durham goes to bat on behalf of Arsenal against his other anti-Arsenal colleagues and venomous xenophobic supporters of the rugby clubs and Tottenham, then you really know that Wenger has pissed them off big time.

We must be doing something right, because they’re scared like shit and they’re getting nasty.

We will be fine today if we don’t waste the chances we create. The faster we score a goal and settle the game down, the better it will be as it relieves pressure all round.

@YW, speaking of demands for team shirts, my wife tried the nasty and tried to arm twist Stone Jnr in a sports shop to go for a Chelsea shirt (she’s a Chav supporter and figured that since it was cheaper than the Arsenal shirts – then it’ll have to do) – and the little lad threw a tantrum because the shirt he was being offered was not red or yellow….Good lad, I really drilled him well – a Gooner for life that one…

  3. as usual excellent writing. think tommy r will feature strongly today.. Fine start, lets just knuckle down and keep it up. coyg..

  4. On this day….. 5th April 1969, Arsenal played Sunderland at Roker Park..

As per the programme regarding their visitors in a feature entitled ‘Stirring tussles with keen rivals’ they note that

“….there was intense rivalry between the clubs in the 1930’s when both had such a big say in the destination of First Division honours. Their last chance of a big prize this season disappeared three weeks ago when they were surprisingly beaten by Swindon Town in the final of the Football league Cup and their target is now to press for a better position in the First Division than the fourth position of which they seem to be assured. Closing the gap with Leeds Utd at the top seems unlikely, but they could rise above Everton and possibly challenge Liverpool for the runners up spot”

A highlighted game was one at Roker Park on December 28th 1935 when a 59,250 crowd watched a nine goal thriller which ended 5-4 to the home side after “.. Arsenal’s storming finish brought them a final goal through Ray Bowden.”

They note that “ this was contrary to the Arsenal pattern of those days, for they played an extremely tight defensive game. In this respect the present day side bears a striking resemblance, for they have conceded only 18 goals in 31 games and have the best defensive record in the First Division.”

“Their powerful all-round side presents a formidable challenge and we look forward to another exciting trial of strength.”

The Arsenal side that day was:

Bob Wilson, Peter Storey, Bob McNab, Frank McLintock, Ian Ure, George Graham, Jimmy Robertson, Jon Sammels, David Court, Bobby Gould, George Armstrong.

The Sunderland side included Colin Todd, Colin Suggett and Dennis Tueart.

‘AT THE SIGN OF THE BLACK CAT’ tells us that

“ I noticed that one gentleman in the Sunday press said that he was a Fulwell ender and that he did not shout obscenities often or always. What merit in this admission does he claim? We do not want any obscenities, and the so called supporter who thinks he is helping our team by this conduct is quite wrong. Nothing could do more damage to the club we support. As far as I can remember it never happened until about the last two or three years and it is a cancerous growth on the game”

I can almost smell the ‘catering points’ when we learn that ‘The following are available in each section of the ground. Tea, Bovril, Hot Dogs, Pies, etc. Bacon Burgers and Hot Doughnuts. Cigarettes and Ice cream.’

And here are yesterdays’ football results: Sunderland 0, Arsenal 0

  5. Your suggested line up is great except that the manager will continue to play Jack ahead of Denilson. The reason being that Jack brings more creativity to the midfield.

  6. great article as usual, YW. I think the guys can beat sunderland silly, this evening.
btw, YW, it’s funny how you refuse to link to the Daily Hate Mail interview in question – got me rolling with laughter.
    COYG

  7. I can see Rosicky starting too since he was rested midweek. If he’s fit enough after his comeback then I’d want Nasri in there too, ahead of Eboue.

  8. Great post Yogi. Have to mention Harry Redknapp. What a pathetic excuse for bad tackling – that the 1960′s was worse! Is the fellow in a time warp or what? The days of Nikita Kruschev are long gone. The world changes with time and football as well. His beloved Luka Modric would be dead if we reverted to 1960′s football.

  9. By the way 3 – 0 to the Arsenal

  10. @Kenyan Gunner – on the issue to do with Redknapp talking about Arsenal, take at look at this headline from one of the reports this weekend…

“Tottenham v Wolves: Redknapp Says Wenger Is Over-Reacting”

You would be inclined to think that since it was Tottenham playing Wolves, ‘Arry would actually talk about Tottenham and Wolves – or why they lost to the Wolves last year or Wigan in their last game…

  11. I want Rosicky will play today. I don’t see any need for Denilson (although I think he will) to start today; I would prefer a more attacking midfielder to compliment Song and Cesc.

What Wilshere has brought to the party is playing the ball, and then traveling ahead of it. Many of our players like to “playmake” and sit back with the play in front of them. His directness and willingness to make forward runs is refreshing.

  12. Here’s another gem of a headline from ‘Appy ‘Arry

    “Redknapp: Wenger has double standards”

It’s like Delboy accusing Wenger of being dodgy….

  13. oh, and Blackpool to beat Chelsea 2-1.

  14. Redknapp, Coyle, Allardyce, countless media hacks…we aren’t making many friends at the moment are we?

At least this guy gets it:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/timvickery/2010/09/emirates_experience_leaves_me.html

  15. Fuck em, who cares?

  16. Thanks for the link Livearsenal. Very interesting.

  17. deano on September 18, 2010
    at 11:01 am

    Amen. Blackpool to beat Chelsea

  18. haha nice to see marouane is already popular, nice that ive followed him watching him play from a young age in morocco, coming up the ranks in bordeux and finally arriving at my loved arsenal!!
    Mabrouuuk marouane!!

  19. Aziz, KL-Malaysia

I presume AW will go out with a 4-2-3-1 – it’s a strong midfield defensively as well as on the attacking side. Either Song and/or Denilson only coming upfield sporadically, and never both at a time.
    Almunia
    Sagna / Koscielny / Squillaci / Clichy
    Song / Denilson
    Rosicky / Fabregas / Vela
    Chamakh

Once we’re up 3 nil, replace the “Rosicky / Fabregas / Vela” line with ‘Eboue / Wilshere / Clichy’ (yes I know, still i would leave Arshavin out – but I know AW doesn’t)

  20. Aziz, KL-Malaysia

Sorry, replacement should be Gibbs i/o Clichy – LOL

  21. mabrouk alikoum zap.we havea moroccan and an algerian playing for arsenal, wonderful.

  22. zap

I think that Chamakh has been in an excellent form. but if does carry this form to a team like chelsea then it would be anyon guess whether Chamakh is good enough or not. But Today at Sunderland we should aleast go there and even score 1 or 2. because if we can do that then hopefully we can come out with those vital three points.

  23. Well, well, well. So the British coaches are ganging up against Wenger. The funny thing is Wenger has always said he loves the physical nature of the English game but hates the reckless tacking. After Eduardo and Ramsay, one would think he has every right to do so. I think most Arsenal blogs are doing a good job in exposing these managers are hypocrites, no doubt helped by the goodwill earned after a successful start to the season. In the final analysis, I suspect AW and the team will have to fight tooth and nail for the title, because these cretins and their lickspittle supporters in the media want to retain the right to kick us off the field.

  24. So Vela likes a transvestite, I’m sure Maria wont be happy to hear that!!!

  25. Sam Allardyce – I’m good enough to manage Real Madrid.

Somewhere a padded cell is empty.

  26. One more thing, the blogger at 7am Kick Off has done another excellent piece, exposing Allardyce as not only a hypocrite but as a consistent exponent of dirty football. Even when AW reputedly had a physical team, between 1996 and 2010 the teams managed by the Walrus have consistently racked up more “disciplinary points” than the Arsenal.
    See links below:

    http://www.7amkickoff.com/2010/anyone-who-gets-their-talking-points-on-foul-play-from-sam-allardyce-is-a-moron/

  27. ‘Appy ‘Arry has called Daniel Levy a ‘wheeler dealer’. Presumably Levy will tell his manager to ‘fuck off’ and storm off when he next sees him.

    YW

  28. Not too hopeful about a Blackpool win – they’ve lost both visits to Stamford Bridge in September before now, conceding 7 without reply. Might manage that in one match tomorrow.

  29. The problem with these English mnagers is that they are so full of themselves…

Fat Sam feels he can manage Real Madrid or Utd…someone please tell him its not always about the big pockets with which you can attract players, we see teams like Roberto Martinez’s Wigan, who try to play football.

Fatty’s teams don’t try to play football at all…lump it into the air and run after it…What was Newcastle thinking?….he took their football a decade behind, luckily they fired him..

I fully expect to see Rosicky play since he got rested midweek…will really be surprised if Denilson doesn’t get to start today..anyway, whoever comes in, I trust to do a professional job.

    COYG

  30. I am still not sure of why denilson is still in the team. cos I just don’t see the use of him. and wenger should had offload him a while ago. But the love he has for denilson is t something that sicken me.

  31. I WILL HAVE TO REPOST THISC OMMMMENT AGAIN.

I am still not sure of why denilson is still in the team. cos I just don’t see the use of him. and wenger should had offload him a while ago. But the love he has for denilson is something that sicken me.

  32. gooner2,

    fuck off

  33. We will win easy yea yeah. Who won this fixture last year?

  34. Reposting your comment gooner2 made very little difference. It was still your usual shit.

  35. I WILL HAVE TO REPOST THISC OMMMMENT AGAIN.

I am still not sure of why gooner2 is still on the blog. cos I just don’t see the use of him. and YW should had offload him a while ago. But the love he has for gooner2 is something that sicken me.

  36. i remember song being slated 2,3 years ago and then eboue, diaby, bendtner, hleb….and the list goes on.they have even called for arsene`s head (the greatest manager ever in my opinion).i`m sorry but these people are not arsenal fans.

  37. well said merlot

  38. “….you can’t do that nowadays – go around booting people – because the referees are down on it and they punish you”

    nice one ‘arry.

  39. gooner2

Not sure why you felt the need to repost your comment. It was so boring, tedious, dull, aesthetically unpleasing and generally – all things considered – a pointless heap of shit the first time around. A second viewing of it did nothing but reinforce my initial impressions.

    YW

  40. “But the love he has for denilson is something that sicken me.”

It is sickening Gooner2. Truly sickening. I am often sickened by the love he has for Denilson. It sickens us all in fact. I’m about to be sick just thinking about that love. It’s sick.

    Anyway. Moving on..

I can’t see Blackpool getting anything at Chelsea. Obviously I’d dearly love to be proved wrong. Ian Holloway gets kind of condescended to in the media…..as if his desire to have his team actually play football will be his undoing. I think his lack of cynicism is wonderfully refreshing. Hope they prove the bastards wrong and stay up.

  41. Karim @ 1:38, very nice!

  42. West Ham goalie blasted the ball into shawcrush’s head

  43. Darius hit the nail on the head at the top of the comments. This is a sign of our success, that the team is tougher this year and that the tactics of kicking Arsenal haven’t proved to work so far. The more we persevere and defeat, if not humiliate, the untechnical cloggers, the more we will hear the braying chorus of complaints from that gang of jealous losers. I hope they attack us every week and the team develops that bunker mentality to show our superior quality and our increasing toughness and determination to win this year.

I like the fact that Fabregas is not getting so excited yet and keeping the team determined. It seems to be rubbing off and the recent interviews with other players have been extolling his leadership, most recently Wilshere’s comments. We have a bit more steel this year, I think, and the new additions seem up for the challenge.

These are all good signs for us and we can cement this message with a strong performance today to throw back in the faces of these jealous critics.

  44. Also, though I don’t want to look ahead past the challenge in front of us today, the comments of Redknapp and others remind me that we have also a CC tie away against the Spuds. A while ago, before Walcott’s injury, I expressed hope that we put out a strong squad from our first team in that competition. Afterwards, it seemed unlikely with our injuries that we could afford to do that.

But again I do feel it is important to keep up the momentum in the first team and to smash the Spuds.

  45. For today – Denilson in for Wilshere & TR7 to start in place of Nasri.

Now Phil Brown has gone I`m not sure who my most loathed manager is (after Sir Red Nose).

I think it`s fat Sam , who has somehow been denied a trophy winning career by directors at Real, Inter & Man You but Chav icon Pulis runs him a close second. Just behind those two has to be that leek chewing hardman Mark Hughes , with Coyle & `Arry also rans as are their teams.

  46. “Your suggested line up is great except that the manager will continue to play Jack ahead of Denilson. The reason being that Jack brings more creativity to the midfield.”

The problem with Jack is that he also makes foolish mistakes, like the one that cost us the only two points we’ve dropped. Typical teenage stuff, even though his development is WAY ahead of schedule.

For reading the play, winning and maintaining possession, Denilson is ahead. There’s also the question of rotation.

  47. @ Limestonegunner
I think we have already shown that we can’t be bullied. We dominated Sunderland last year. We fell down last season when, with a depleted forward line, we did not take advantage of our possession and put away our scoring chances.

Also, if I were in charge, I’d probably put out a second string line-up in the CC. But Wenger will be true to his promise to the kids and play them, I suspect. It will be the reserves plus Jack, Djourou and maybe Carlos. If only Ramsey and Frimpong were fit! (Sigh) On the other hand, Sp*rs will probably have to play their reserves as well, and I would back ours against theirs any day.

    @ Paulie Walnuts
I am betting on that lineup, too. Possibly Eboue to start as well, though?

  48. Oh my the spuds go behind at home again!

  49. Another tough game today, it’s good that we are getting these brutish northern teams out of the way quickly, and let’s hope we can get anover 3 points.

Great performance mid week, especially considering the players we were missing. It’s great that we have players top players like Rosicky and Denilson who have been playing well and can come in.

Just hope that we can keep Chamakh fit until RvP is back.

  50. Fungunner hoping Lansbury gets to play Tuesday. I call him the future Steven Gerrard , albeit with a footballing brain!

  51. I’m sure he will play, Kenyan gunner. Jeorge Bird Arsenal Youth site said he went to train with the first team before the Braga match, which must put him in the frame at least.

  52. Mark Schwarzer is really not having a good game. Fumbling all over – what a nightmare that would have been if he had that mare for the Arsenal.

WBA are 3-1 up against the thugs of Birmingham.

  53. Spuds back in from the penalty spot.

  54. Tonights team confirmation.

    Almunia
    Sagna, Koscielny, Squillaci, Clichy
    Song, Wilshere, Fabregas
    Nasri, Chamakh, Arshavin

Apparently, Sunderland have mowed the grass in a funny way while keeping it long and they haven’t watered it…LOL

  55. Thanks, DS. I was totally wrong about the team selection!

  56. FG…I can actually see the same substitutions being made as it was Wednesday…

  57. Could be, DS.

Darn it, I thought the match started at 5pm but in fact it’s 5:30pm.

  58. Same lineup as against Braga. Looks like Wilshere wouldn’t play on Tuesday.

  59. Wolves have just rolled over for Spurs to walk the ball into the net. Stupid fuckers.

And Sparky got a doese of the Blackburn anti-football – will he now complain?…LOL! El-Cunt Diouf clearly blocked and impeded Schwarzer with no intention whatsoever to play the ball from a long punt from Robinson’s freekick, allowing Samba the beast to score.

If ever there was a definition of rugby – and even then, playing the man without the ball is a clear foul.

  60. A good example of what Arsene Wenger was talking about reckless and dangerous tackles in the English game.

Steve Harper the Newcastle keeper has a broken collar bone from a reckless challenge by Jermaine Beckford…

And they call it commitment and a brand of football.

  61. a nice dozen will do just fine with Blackpool to draw with Chelsea on the morrow

  62. COYG!!!!

  63. Arsenal.

  64. no no no darius. it was a genuine challenge.

if i say it enough times it will be true

  65. Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal!

Methinks Sunderland will be trying high balls over the defence. Bent is a little quick, but ur D should be good to cope.

Cesc described Wilshire as the future of England. Unlike the false dawn, our Jackie boy is the truth!

  66. Just pressed the mute button. God I love the mute button.

No real reason for pressing it but Champion & Waddle do little to convince me otherwise.

  67. Only when someone like Rooney or Gerrard gets a career threatening injury will the thug tactics be brought into question seriously. Arsene tries eloquently to differentiate between hard fair challenges and blatant attempts to injure players and Twitchy starts talking about how football is now different from the 60′s! You couldn’t make it up. Arsene must know he is really swimming against the tide of idiots on this one.

    COME ON ARSENAL!

  68. Come on you yellows! Got a great French stream – they seem to like Arsene!!

  69. Spoke too soon it just went down. Got it in german now!

  70. goal of the season

  71. A Peter Crouch of a goal there. We finally get some luck!

  72. we need to slow this game down. the players aren’t concentrating enpough & we’re conceding possession too chaeply

  73. Nah we’re matching them – they’ll tire of all this kick and rush soon.

  74. TR7 warming up?

  75. Cesc injured???

  76. Fuck please no

  77. I’m glad Sunderland are playing well – the second goal will be such a blow to them that it might destroy their belief.

  78. It seemed to me that he limped after the ball struck him for the goal. Probably tweaked his knee.

  79. It’s a blow, especially as we need someone to take the game by the scruff. Sunderland have have a good half so far.

  80. This ugly football is a handful to our boys!

  81. Yeh – they are a goal down at home they will have a go. But our time will come.

  82. We’ve committed 10 fouls to Sunderland’s 1. That might be the reason why every decision seems to be going in their favour

  83. I really fucking hate this ref

  84. Their saying Fab’s hamstring gone

  85. *They’re*

  86. Our off the ball movement isn’t it’s usual majesty. Guess have to credit Sunderland for disrupting our flow, but I still think there’s a lack of concentration

  87. Props to Big AL too. He’s clearing things up at the back like Henry my vaccuum

  88. That bit of passing was much better. The signs are there that we can murk Sunderland, but we need the focus. I’d like to see Denny come in, help us maintain possession

  89. We’ll need Denilson in there to support Song. This is a game in hell!

  90. When you have away games like this and the opposition are throwing everything they have at us it’s best to sit back and admire how good our defence is. Kos in particular is a monster.
I believe we’ll break and break their hearts.

  91. Cracking game. Full bloodied english and Sunderland at the mo are playing hard and fair. We standing up well at the mo.

  92. game.

  93. They have us on the backfoot. No doubt.

  94. SomeRandomGunner

Awful performance so far, We need Denilson to calm down and take control of the game. Song is totally awful too.

  95. blooded

  96. someone give me a link for the game please

  97. that was some random comment.

  98. SomeRandomGunner

    Anybody has possession stats ?

I guess it would be 65-35 against us .

  99. I’m willing to lay money down the ref will send Song off for nothing.

At half time sunderland fouls 1 arsenal 11. not a fair reflection of the game at all

  100. Let’s hope they tire out.

  101. always gunner be a Sherie Blair of a game, especially when they are 1-0 down. Defense is doing admirably at the moment, thats all that matters now.

  102. oh bollocks to the spelin.

  103. I love young Jack but we need the influence of Denilson in this game. The team is trying too many through balls and needs to get back to more short passing and ball control to tire Sunderland. Kos and Squillaci looking solid.

  104. Gadget I agree seeing red is likely but also for Wilshere just as much as Song!

  105. Major credit to Koscielny in particular. Very impressed with his dogged defending, headers clear, and anticipation and reading. I think the weakness right now is in the midfield defending.

I think we need Denislon in for Wilshere or Song on the yellows and to keep more possession and let Rosicky play make forward.

  106. Goonzablazin, right behind you on that one!

  107. Any decent links?

  108. Mria, I think Sunderland will tire out if we can keep this up and get an early goal in this half.

  109. Toffer some constructive crit Wilshire needs to keep it simple. His attempts to be flash haven’t been successful and lost possesion. Use of his right foot or a pass would have been the better choice in both instances.

Song’s been ok, but his passing hasn’t been as great as it could. He’s been getting forward a lot. I don’t think our midfield have set roles. THey’ve been pretty interchangeable.

If we had Walcott, this game would probably be a lot more comfortable. Goddamn injuries

  110. I was just about to ask you that Maria??

  111. I disagree that Sunderland have been dominant. Plenty of possession maybe but not threatening and the defence has been supreme.

Jack takes too many risks but a second goal will come. Denilson would be on the pitch for me.

  112. Some people need to get a grip. We’re 1 up away from home.

  113. We could / should easily have had 3 this half.

  114. Red for Song you were right

  115. We needed Arsh to put one of those chances away

  116. What did I fucking say? Nothing

That’s fucking attrocitious when Sunderland have been doing that all fucking game

  117. Gadget you were right….

  118. alex song for FUCKS sake

  119. Right. Game on. This looks like an expensive 3 points.

  120. im too nervous, im not even gonna bother watching it on a terrible stream that pauses every 5 secs, now weve got 10 men its not worth it doing it to myself..come on arsenal..

  121. NO card for Bramble?? Cheating ref

  122. Well, well, well. This is going to be a real interesting test for us now. We’re going to win this and score more and see this as a great launching pad for the season.

  123. Song has paid the price for the role he plays within the team more than anything. Harsh to get sent off for that.

Can you predict a Chamakh goal now please Gadget.

  124. I’m with you Limestone.

  125. ONE SONG, WE’VE ONLY GOT ONE…ah. This is such a big test, I totally believe in the boys though! If anyone can calm things down and keep the ball it’s Deni, glad he’s on.

  126. no yellow for bramble on jack?

    Jack’s face said it all

  127. Time for TR7 to crack one in

  128. Wenger’s a legend!

King eboue will the one who wins this match.

  129. great support by Arsenal away–I’m hearing the love for Arsenal clearly on my telly. COYG! We are going to make Sunderland pay with some lightning counterstrikes.

  130. Grewat concentration by Clichy

  131. I am not complaining but on a day like today is when Arsha could be described as a luxury player.

  132. The triangles, the movement, Rosicky truely is something to behold.

  133. it appears all the talk from fat sam coyle and stoke have payed off. one nil to the Arsenal will do for me. We need to stay focused and not go gun ho for the second. Koicieny MOTM so far

  134. penalty! Arsenal we love you!

  135. no…that just did not happen

  136. Stay strong, Arsenal! No heads down, come on!

  137. It is not our day, period. Just hope we can hang on.

  138. Bout fucking time!

  139. oh no Rosicky mate

  140. poor Rosicky…hes been having such a good season…hopefully its going to be just a slight blemish

  141. ayyyyyyy,

    Rosicky, noooooooo!

  142. What a joke of a referee, eh? Ridiculous red card, and then few minutes later no yellow for Bramble.

I’d be glad, if we are able to hold onto the lead. Rosicky could have made things hell more easier for us. Oh well.

Strangely, I don’t panic when crosses arrive in our box anymore. Both Cbs have been tremendous so far. I hope I don’t jinx them.

  143. Don’t worry poeple King Eboue will see us to the promised land

  144. I just do not see us not winning this.

    Watch the game.

  145. Big Al has been so calm and composed…knock on wood…its a great sight

  146. We have to continue to put in a great defensive performance. It’s days like this when clean sheets are so important.

  147. he should not let it not effect him and keep going. We need to keep possession now.

  148. We are looking calmer and more assured than Sunderland. They are frustrated that we are playing better than them with 10 men. Come on Arsenal!

  149. Denilson will calm things down. He’s been great so far.

  150. Almunia!!! Almunia!!

    Best keeper in the prem

  151. what a save

  152. Almunia, showing the spirit. Just what he needs.

  153. UNJINX UNJINX UNJINX!!!!

  154. Denny Denny

    best underrated midfielder ever

  155. Switched Talksh&te commentary off after 5 mins & have been following on BBC Sport `Live` (& bricking it every time it updated) & on here with fellow Gooners.

    Keep me going folks !

  156. Arshavin is not missing. Now it all about composure and not doing something silly at times like these you know if the team really has matured.

  157. How about Denilson…standing in for Song in such an exemplary fashion?

  158. You said it gadget….hes been immense for us today

  159. Wenger telling Nasri to keep it compact

  160. Fu#$ing Referee has officially lost the plot.

  161. can’t wait for that wistle.

  162. If this were Dugeons & Dragons, Denny’s player would come with a +100 calming field bonus.

    A truely remarkable player.

Not the fastest but one of the cleverest

  163. Hahahaha. They keep getting slapped back in the face, when they come towards our side of the goal. Hilarious. Really good defensive performance.

  164. Noooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  165. Never our day!

  166. FUck FUCK FUCK FUCK!!!

  167. Anyone who dares complain after the way we fought today desreves to die a horrible death.

  168. No no no! no no no no

  169. Absolute fucking bullshit.

  170. And to read my spelling of deserves. Over and again. What a performance – I have nothing but pride.

  171. I really feel for Rosicky right now…

  172. But a truly diabolical Phil Dowd performance.

  173. tomas rosicky you fucking wanker

  174. Someone please explain what the heck just happened to me? 3 defenders, 2 strikers, 1 ball, come on…… *sigh*

  175. Zap…dont go there…

  176. all the asses like fatb Sam got their wish and the ref has done a job on us.it was supposed to be 4 min they scoerd on the 5th. What can I say

  177. Oh damn damn damn. And yet again you’d have to say it was failure to take our chances that hurt us in the end.

  178. Zap get outta here with that nonsense it happens, deal with it.

  179. And we could have put it to bed with that penalty.
    Time for what ifs.
    I love you Arsenal.

  180. Knew they were gunner nick a goal, could feel it in me waters, bastads. nothing we could do.

  181. 10 Man Arsenal 1
    12 Man Sunderland 1
    Shame

  182. Absolutely steww but don’t the media just love it “..Arsenal’s supposed new found resilience.” Ha ha. Fools.

This changes nothing. We are the best team in the League.

  183. Rosicky takes penalties? I dont get that when we have Chamahk in the team.

He has been kicking the ball high ever since he came back from injury.

    WOW!

  184. you know what i just dont give a fuck arseman, call me what you like but with 10 men, 1-0 up, chance to win the game and end the misery for so many people, he goes and fucking blasts it over the bar.

  185. Fucking since when does Sunderland get fergie time?

This ref is on my face punching list.

The team played and defended excellently and were put at an awful disadvantage by a shit ref and yet the injuries continue.

  186. Zap – You are out of order.

Go to other blogs with that shit.

  187. Zap – You know what, if we had held on you would be over the moon gobbing about a great defensive performance. Save your spleen for Phil Dowd.

  188. great defensive performance. fukin never looked that solid with Gallarse in defence.

  189. Zap…im not going to call you anything…i understand your frustration….but trust me…its probably eating him up from inside…hes Arsenal thru n thru…he deserves forgiveness.

  190. Hi all, been following ACLF for a long time and i love the atmosphere you guys have created here. Haven’t commented much, but I’ll just like to say: WHAT A ***KING SHIT REF!

    Okay, done. Sighs.

  191. not impressive, not at all,of all teams we should know best,u don’t loose points cheaply, and yeah that was a very cheap giveaway!

  192. It’s hard to take but I’m with Steww – proud of the way we fought and battled – it’s still a worthy point with ten men regardless of the timing of their goal.

  193. Stan Collymore is absolutely delighted shouting his mouth off. claiming the Nasri penalty wasn’t a pen anyway bla bla bla. it was stone wall penalty but it did nott make a diffence in the end

  194. bradys right foot

Devastated feels like a defeat will not be able to sleep tonigt. Thought the defense was immense they really deserved the clean sheet.

  195. Tomas didn’t do it deliberately to piss you off, Zap. He must feel worse than we do. But I wish someone else had taken it.

Fantastic defensive performance, it sounded like our back four and Big Al stood up well.

  196. A point is the fair result as our goal never should’ve happened. We weren’t at our best so they deserved it. We want teams to play football against us, so this can happen. We’ll tear them apart at home.

  197. Hey folks….Calm down – clam the fuck down….

1 point away from home with 10 men is not a bad result.

The ref was wearing a Sunderland shirt – so take it on the chin and we look forward to a visit by WBA.

  198. Jesus Zap, end the misery? He didn’t just kick the cure for cancer over the bar, have some perspective. We just got a point away from home at one of our bogey grounds with 10 men and our best player off injured.

  199. I love you and all your glorious treasure. You are betrothed to a bastard who doesn’t love you or appreciate your beauty and yet you are the rhythm to which my heart beats.
You’ve captured my soul, you are my queen. I give you my arms, I give you my word.

    I love you Arsenal!!!!!

  200. Season over, we all know it.

And so begins our fight against 12 men for the rest of the season. Wasn’t a red card, and the whitsle should’ve been blown when we cleared the corner. Still no excuses, we should have won. Really impressed by the defensive performance. Apart from the errr…..whatever happened in the end.

  201. Agreed regarding the defensive performance. Our back four were immense and we still created chances and fluent play despite a man down. Sunderland will go home knowing they were f*cking lucky to grab a point, with all their shit sneaky little fouls and diving antics. We were clearly the better team, despite those crap commentators gushing over every single S’lund hoofball.

  202. ds, who’s up…only Zap.

  203. Zap is a turncoat

  204. I honestly believe the referee was influenced by all the talk prior to the game from fat SAM STOKE Coyle, Rednapp they got their wish but justice wasn’t done and Sunderland don’t deserve anything from the game. it was supposed to 4 minutes not 5

  205. shotta-gunna how the fuck do you know what i would be thinking had we held on,

i dont hate rosicky nor do i blame him, he shouldnt have taken the penalty but when you have a shit week, this just pisses me off. fucking hell arsenal what a chance to go top, its just so annoying, thanks arseman and whoever else understood my anger everyone has a different way of reacting, shotta gunna as usual going on about the ref and ignoring what actually happened on the field.

You know what sky should make a whole new channel dedicated to just the referees and the officials, the camera just following them around so you can critisize them for every bad thing they do.

  206. YW
you jinxed us,i put the blame on u!lol

  207. Good point away–we haven’t lost in three tough away fixtures. It’s crushing that we couldn’t hold on and that we didn’t convert a penalty to secure all three points. But we played well with 10 men.

  208. Wenger is awesome. He knows best, better than the rest, he truely does.

    A country parsec people.

    Fuck anyone who says differenltly

  209. Clichy remains a disaster waiting to happen. He really has learned fuck all, about defending. He was the weakest link all evening, and he can’t fucking clear.

  210. I’m sorry Darius but that was utter bullshit.

…ok, I’m breathing again…man we defended well. The only time that – that was cleared and then came back off someone – damn it. So frustrated.

I take it back Darius…a point away is good.

Never BEEN so pissed at Rosicky…christ!

    Phil Dowd…grrr.

  211. A nice point away from home with ten men.

    That will still win Premierships.

Song deserved his two red cards. The Sunderland goal could always happen.

We live to fight another day.

  212. Last season we would’ve lost this fixture. Today we hung on for thirty five minutes down to ten men and we got a draw away to a tough team. I should feel gutted that we gave a way the goal and that Rosicky missed the penalty, but I don’t. The team defended admirably and they created more goal opportunities than Sunderland.

  213. Song got TWO red cards!

  214. “tomas rosicky you fucking wanker”

How dare you. That’s disgraceful. Fuck off.

Hell of a spirited performance. Down to ten men against a dogged Sunderland and THAT ref the odds were against us. We ARE still the best team in the league…….

    Don’t listen to the doubters.

    ARSENAL.

  215. consol…if you aren’t taking valium then you are even greater a man than we already believe you to be.

  216. @ Limestonegunner on September 18, 2010
    at 7:34 pm

    Absolutely right.

    @ Ateeb on September 18, 2010
    at 7:35 pm

    Ridiculous.

  217. We were dreadful, didnt deserve anymore than that.

  218. season still looks good from where im sitting.

  219. Zap,

Penalty’s aren’t guaranteed to go in. What if it was Cesc who missed? Would you have called him a wanker? To focus on that one event is, I respectfully contend, silly.

Rosicky had a solid game the moment he came on.

  220. Axis.

    Pespective my friend, perspective.

    Righ
t now, everyone is pissed on top of being emotionally charged about the loss.

Lt’s take the point – it’s a good one. The bigger deal is that we fought gallantly and that can’t be taken away from us by dodgy refs, conspiracies and anti-Arsenalism.

Believe me, you’ll feel better after a while. The team didn’t do much wrong.

  221. At least we have Pz back.

    Fungunner,

What? Is that how you fucking clear a ball in the box? Really? He hit it so tamely, it actually hit our Cb, and fell nicely for Bent. WTF?!?!

  222. The only thing i would’ve done differently is used our last sub in the 93rd…but hindsight is a bitch…

  223. Harry Flowers you can shut up who the fuck are you.

Stop hating, I am totally pissed off you can continue looking on the bright side thinking its a great point which of course it is, but I dont understand how you can just ignore the manner in which we drew, for gods sake, we are fans, its almost our job to go through emotions and let them out, its not like always pretending to be positive is gonna rub of on the players, were just watching at home ffs.

  224. blame the ref as long as u like,d fact is we built up the atmosphere till the time they got the goal,we all saw it coming. The stakes are high and we won’ always play well, infact we didn’t deserve the 3 points based on just sheer possesion that used to be our forte, this boys should know better, they know the stakes are high, mature players like Rosicky should show the step and calmly take ur pen.am not commiserating with rosicky at all.

  225. Stop the finger pointing Ateeb. Clichy didn’t put a foot wrong the whole day and one mistake doesn’t mean he hasn’t learned shit.

  226. We played very well. The misses by MC, AA and TR cost us. Mature, heartening performance

  227. I just want to see Rosicky super fired up for the next game. West Brom are in for a fucking hefty beating next week now.

  228. Gadget, as a matter of fact I would.

  229. Ateeb, what the fuck is Clichy supposed to do about the centre back getting in his way? Fuck, some of you are such idiots. A point away at Sunderland down to ten men is a good result.

  230. @ Ateeb

    What Gainsbourg69 said.

  231. Veteran,

We played so much better in the second half. Truth be told if we’d played like that in the first, we’d have probably run away with it.

Still, if they play like that against CHelsea & Man U, Sunderland will get points as well so it’s not all bad.

  232. I thought we’d won that one. It’s the timing of the goal that makes it such a ****. If they’d scored 20 minutes earlier, we’d probably be congratulating ourselves for hanging on to a draw with only ten men. As it is, we just want to kick someone – hard. Not Rosicky, though. (No, nor Clichy.)

  233. No valium. I did rack off 20 gallons of cider on friday. Now if that goes to vinegar, we have a real disaster on our hands.

A draw away? Not even a crease on the forehead , just pour another.

  234. We were not let down by our defenders – it was chances missed. We will have days when we don’t play that well. Just need to be a bit more clinical at the other end.

  235. must say the team played well down 1 man.

    our defense is great!

  236. Look, even Duke is still positive, We must win the league this year!

  237. im trying to see where chelsea can drop points, looks like man shitty is our only hope for the foreseeable future, nothing blackpool can do tomorrow except prevent chelsea absolutely killing them.

  238. Zap i understand what your angry, since when the fuck does Rocisky take penaltys? and any player, even Almunia, should hit the fucking target, its so fucking annoying !!!

  239. I don’t know what the fuck he was doing with the ball, he had such a bad go at the ball, it ended up as a tame pass. Ridiculous. IT IS HIS FAULT HE HIT THE CB, he is the one trying to clear the ball, and he had an awful shot. He panic or whatever the fuck happens to him occasionally.

And no he had a an o.k game, nothing more.

How long do you want to go protecting and defending players that have been there for sooooo long, and still making the same mistakes.

  240. I think the club should seriously consider putting forward bland “say nothing” statements at all press conferences. All week Sky and ESPN and many other mainstream media mis-represented AW’s statements. AW simply said he has no problem with the physical nature of the game here, but bemoaned bad tackles which target the player rather than the ball.
This is grossly mis-represented as AW calling for greater protection for his players and moaning against physical play. Even just before the kick-off in the tunnel the ESPN comments girl said the same thing directly while standing next to Dowd. Adding that AW was trying to influence the refs.
Partly in consequence we get any touch on a Sunderland player as a foul or yellow card, and anything similar against Arsenal waved “play on”.
AW in his post game interview very calmly said that there was nothing during the 4 mins to suggest that time should be added to the 4 mins. He also said that Cesc has a hamstring injury.

  241. someone has just said that Clichy’s clearance went awry because he was fouled as he kicked the ball.

  242. Very, very painful to miss all three points right at the death. And the chance to stick it to all the critics who disrespect Wenger and Arsenal: Allardyce, Redknapp, Coyle, Pulis and so on…

It’s a mixed bag today no matter how you look at it–there are reasons to be upset but likewise positives to take away. I was sure the way we were playing in the second half and down a man that we would hang on. That’s because we were playing with great heart. We were bossing the game and attacking with 10 men! Sunderland were getting frustrated.

But we just needed a bit more concentration, on the penalty, in the box at the end. We needed maybe a bit of rotation in the lineup–we started very sluggishly. Some sort of hangover from mid-week. But we’ll have a lot of tough away fixtures after CL games, sometimes involving long distance travel. That will be tough.

We are clearly better than last year. This is a stronger team.

  243. Haven’t they only lost there twice in the last year? We all need to be rooting for lollerpool tomorrow against Utd, I want this kept as a two horse race.

  244. on ATVO, I mean. Anyone saw that?

    ****

Props to the away support. They were amazing.

  245. Denilson deserves a starting place in the next game I suppose. He brings calmness to the team. I think we played better with ten men. anyone agree?

  246. The referee sent off Song to even things up for Cahill’s sending off…that’s clear to every one who’s even blind. That’s one thing that is so disappointing about the Premier League, referees DO affect games intentionally to even things out…

As far as the game, defensively we were great for 94 minutes and 24 seconds. Offensively we were crap apart from Chamakh running himself to the ground.

I guess you can say it was in our hands if we scored the penalty, but things like that will happen. I’m just so pissed off that just one second and we would have got the three points.

    That’s life…

  247. what happened in the first half, totally un-arsenal!we committed the most fouls by far!

Thought we have learnt that lesson, you don’t just show up at games and expect teams to roll over!

  248. AA is still not where he should be as yet. I would like to see Vela given a chance to start.

  249. Feels like a bloody loss because it’s a game we should have won. Would have blamed Arshavin for being so wasteful but Rosicky’s penalty miss toped it all. Bloody visit to hell!

  250. Well Zap, as I respectfully say, silly. But you have the right to deal as works best for you, afterall, when shit happens, clean up!

I’m sure the Ghanians would have wise words to say about penalties though.

Is anyone blaming BIg AL? Man has been solid all season. Best keeper in the prem!

Referees should explain themselves. Sunderland score as the game was approaching the 5th of what should have been 4 mins of injury time.

The league should do much more to enforce consistency in their refs

  251. The whistle should have been blown at 4…fuck the referee…about Rosicky’s penalty miss…we can’t be dependent on Fabregas for everything…Rosicky was probably next in Arsene’s list of penalty taker…he didn’t convert…happens to the best players

  252. Zap…..It’s not “our job” to call one of our own players a “fucking wanker” because he misses a penalty. That’s way out of order. So if your going to do that you can f**k off in my book. How do you think he feels?
You seem to be doing all the “hating”. If you can’t support the team like a grown up without resorting to abuse just because it didn’t go our way then what’s the use.

  253. If I saw Rocisky right now I’d slap his face

  254. I dont understand why people get so upset when someone gets pissed off, is it illegall to feel angry at your team? No it isn’t, like someone else said im certainly not commiserating with rosicky why should I lets face it its his fault, of course he didnt want to miss the fucking penalty why the hell would he, but marouane should have taken it and im saying that cos hes a better penalty taker, and yes i would say the same to any other player that missed the penalty, ok not chamakh cause hes moroccan and my fav player but anyone else.

  255. Positives:

Until the final seconds of the game, we gave a master class in how to play with 10 men.

Our new boys Squillaci, Koscielny and Chamakh were all immense.

Almunia was sharp and Denilson seems fitter and stronger than last season.

The major negatives are that we have an injured Cesc and a one match suspension for Song. Let’s not forget our top 3 penalty takers were out of the game (RVP, Arsh and Cesc) and Nasri would have been the obvious taker. Why he didn’t take it may be down to the ‘don’t take the PK if you’re fouled unless you’re Cesc’ rule.

Hugely disappointing now, but some positive signs for the long road ahead.

  256. Sunderland away is always a tough proposition. It feels like a loss because of the timing of the equalizer, but turning on our players for being human and making mistakes is pathetic. You can’t win every game in a season and a hard fought point with 10 men is a respectable result under the circumstances. Some people need to take a deep breath, count to 10 and get some perspective.

  257. AW also said that Nasri was the designated penalty taker after Cesc and that he didn’t know why Rosicky took it.
3 games in week is too much for Wilshere. AW should have rested him. AW always advocated that the very young players (Cesc a few years ago) cannot play more than 1 or 2 games every 7/8 days.

  258. Rosicky taking the penalty is the only issue i have with our play.

I was actually happy that we had a game where our offense wasnt so great. It gave us a chance to see how well we can defend.

    Great, Great defending!

  259. It’s a poor result after a great performance. We should have won 3-nil.

Did Sunderland create even 1 single clear chance in this game? It was full spectrum dominance in the air. This was a performance that will stand us in very good stead for the season.

We have a very good defence. That’s what we learnt from this game

  260. Zap… are you sure Chamack’s a better penalty taker?…On paper Rosicky is as good as anybody when it comes to penalties

  261. No gurantees that Nasri would have converted the penalty. No point blaming Rosicky. Happens. I’ve not seen him miss a penalty before.

  262. Harry flowers i can do whatever the fuck i want, what are u gonna do shut up mate

  263. Tomas, Zap

Did you get lost on your way to Le Grove?

  264. a very nice positive is almunia has stopped becoming the scapegoat when ever we lose or draw, which is brilliant. Btw where was cesc when the penalty was being taken?

  265. Sammy it was a game we all expected Denilson to start. Song wouldn’t have struggled so much. The way Song was playing I wasn’t surprised by the red. Expect Denilson to start though not sure he’ll play the Carling cup match. What I’d like to see is Vela in place of Arshavin. Me thinks the assasin needs some bench time to reflect on what went wrong. Or is scoring four goals at Anfield a curse?

  266. You just knew Song was going to get sent off. I hate blaming referees, and I actually did point out that the misses cost us, but Alan Wiley is the most anti Arsenal ref you could find. I’ve seen this happen again and again with him. If it’s a 50-50 it never goes to Arsenal. He gives soft yellows to us, won’t give fouls against us.

I am going to blame Denilson a bit. When he broke with less than 2 mins left, he should have passed back to Rosicky and we could have closed the game out maintaining possession. I am a Denilson fan but that was a mistake. You could also blame Rosicky for not making himself available quickly.

  267. Oliver,
They had some clear chances–the header from al-Mohammadi’s cross.

Zap, he was watching from the bench!!?!?

    Excellent defending; that’s very positive.

I think Denilson is made for mid-table prem teams, so I was surprised he didn’t come on earlier with Song and Wilshere both on yellows and us having difficulty early on in keeping possession and controlling play in the midfield. So that would be the only tactical issue I have with our performance.

Everyone played very hard, especially in the second half.

  268. I have to say offensively at times it felt we were playing 4-4-2. Nasri didn’t seem to attack spaces the same as Arshavin or Chamakh. I think the made life easier for Sunderland and harder for us. Less fluid up front. As the game wore on though, our midfield seemed to control the game more, definately the influence of that man hill Denny.

Our defence was magnificent. From Clichy to Almunia. That was Clichy’s best game this season, although I think he should work on his shooting. When he got into space in the first half I though he was going to attack the keeper, instead he made what could have been an ill-advised cross or a really poor shot, I’m not really sure what it was! In any event, I can help but think this is another element that Cashley has over him.

  269. Does the CC game count towards Song’s suspension?

  270. Thanks Darius. Consol.

I’m feeling much better already. Lol.

Perspective and cider…I think I just found another rule for living.

  271. I don’t think there is much reason to blame the ref. Bad sending off of Song, but we had our chances and Song needed to be more careful.

  272. FG i dont think he would have played anyway and if it doesnt, its west brom at home so denilson will do the job

  273. @JBh 7:53 pm.

Nasri didn’t take the pen because he was the one fouled.

To the best of my knowledge, Arsenal players who get fouled to win the penalty rarely take the penalty.

  274. Very disappointed in the end, but I will take the draw. Very poor referee again, even the commentator on FSC said it was a bad second card for Song, the Sunderland player ran straight at him and the ref could have just given the foul like he did for Brambell.
I love Arshavin but this was not a game to play him in, we missed Diaby or could have played Song and Denny (who played well when he came on). Once Fab went off they were just running through our midfield but the defence was magnificent and when even down to 10 men. I just don’t know what happended with their extra, extra time goal – I need to see it again. But the ten men outplayed them and we are still unbeaten.
    COYG and doomers stay away.

  275. We came off the back of a midweek game, scored a very lucky goal, played a long time with ten men and missed a penalty. Looking at it that way, a draw is a good enough result.

Defensively we were excellent until the 95th minute, no point blaming individuals.

  276. If Nasri is the second penalty taker that means Wenger feels he is better.

Its really not about blame its about us continuing to do what is right at the right time.

I am happy with the performance overall but it sure feels like two points dropped.

  277. @ Zap

I know Song probably wouldn’t have played against Spurs – that’s why I asked, hoping that the game he “misses” will be a game he wouldn’t have played in anyway. But will he have to miss the WBA match, does anyone know?

  278. I’m sure the CC does count FG.

  279. Clichys so shit its inexcusable, every time i watch i just have this picture in picture in my head of him either running back hopelessly chasing someone whos got passed him to easily, not being able to clear the ball or covering 10 yards following park ji sung doing nothing and allowing him to score. Im sorry but Gibbs is just better. Plus he’s english I would love to see him really make a push for the left back position in euro 2012.

  280. we can’t close an eye when it comes to Arshavin anymore, he contributed to our unsettled game in the first half, was lethargic,am tired of seeing him cheaply lose possesion then do the obligatory short run after the man.

Kudos to squllacci, wilshere(massive man) and kos

Rosicky and Arshavin should know better!

  281. I think it does FG because the suspension is for the next ‘domestic’ game. Arsene may have got this one wrong by keeping exactly the same team as Wednesday. The team might have actually benefitted from a little freshening up. With the benefit of hindsight a Song/Denilson/Cesc midfield may have been a better bet from the kick off.

  282. Thanks, dups. Phew.

  283. @Fun Gunner.

Yes, the Carling cup is the game that Song will miss. All association games count to suspensions – so Song will be back for WBA.

  284. Grow up Zap. Don’t play the hard man. You sound like a 12 year old.

Anyway…Personally I don’t think a draw was a bad result under the circumstances. A disappointment ‘cos we lost it at the end I admit. Whatever. Early days so need for anyone to panic just yet for christs sake.

I can see there’s negative vibes in the playground and I can’t be arsed to trade insults…I’m off.

    ARSENAL.

  285. I thought AW would bring in Denilson at least, but I guess he had his reasons.

  286. am sorry forgot Chamahk, damn he is my hero

  287. Apparently Denilson was up all night partying with his ‘Samba’ buddies again. :)

  288. Chelsea haven’t looked that great in a few games this season. It’s probably trite of me to say, but against Wigan, they were pretty bad (in fact any keeper but Kirkland would have kept that game respectable), and West Ham were pretty unlucky.

Chelsea will drop quite a few points this season, maybe not to us, but there are enough teams who will.

I have to say though, the last time I felt horrible about a game was Fulham at the cottage last year. Even though we won, we played so badly for the ful 90 it left a bad taste in my mouth. Today we didn’t play as magnificent as usual, and that’s further exaggerated by the perfomance on Weds, but we didn’t play terribly

  289. ‘To the best of my knowledge, Arsenal players who get fouled to win the penalty rarely take the penalty.’

Probably the dumbest statement ever made in the history of humankind.

  290. Thomas you know little about Arsenal then. This was always the was when TH14 & RP7 were fouled the other took the penalty.

  291. i second that tomas, ur bad darius!

  292. Gadget, it was really a schizophrenic performance. First half I thought we actually did play pretty badly–I don’t know what was wrong. But I thought we played brilliantly in defense and midfield in the second half and even managed to be somewhat dangerous in attack down 10 men.

Actually, I think this game was similar to our game against Liverpool in some ways, although they were the ones down and we scored near the end. I guess the inverse of this game. But in both we had a split performance.

  293. One last thing: we are the arsenal, we got enough people hating us without the fans, but more importantly those who regularly frequent this site, sniping at our players. Behave yourselves ladies and gentleman and I bid thee a goodnight.

As Yogi would say, ’till tomorrow

  294. cesc was fouled, also had a cracked bone when he took the kick against barca, don’t start shitty theories here!

  295. Rosicky shouldnt know better, its not his fault, had arshavin put away those chances we would all be happy and instead of harry flowers accusing me of being 12 and people like tomas coming on saying they want to slap rosickys face we would all be happy and at the top of the league.

By the way i apologize for what I said about rosicky it was in the heat of the moment, hopefully people can understand that and my frustration at the time, saying that is low and inexcusable but i dont understand certain people who would just love me to say:

”it was 100 percent the ref’s fault, what a great display im so proud, arsenal arsenal arsenal Arsenal!!” a few minutes after we have just conceded a 93rd minute equalizer. I hope you can see where im coming from, later tonight..no tomorrow, I will be looking at the positives but for now it is only human to be very upset

  296. Tomas

In the last 10 years, count on your fingers how many fouled Arsenal players actually take the penalty. You won’t make it beyond one hand.

  297. Rahl you also know little about Arsenal then.

  298. I have heard that same thing about the penalties.

  299. I just made the mistake of going to Le moan. And I thought I was being the doomer tonight. Apparently, some want to murder our very own players. The blame for the goal ranges from Clichy, Almununia, to Denilson.

And Rosicky, well let’s not go there.

  300. Paul N…its not a rumour about the penalty thing – there’s this weird superstitious thing with Arsenal players that if you get fouled, then you shouldn’t take the penalty.

  301. SomeRandomGunner

Denilson should have taken the penalty , he is the calmest person in our team especially when our midfield is totally malfunctioning like today or it was like against Barca :)

  302. Rahl and Tomas, are the same person. Idiots.

  303. I agree, Denilson is mentally quite strong. He remains calm all the time. He seems to have grown physically as well. He was good, it’s good to have him back in the team. At the right time.

  304. I know DS, It has been that way for as long as I remember. It worked out crap today though!

  305. Only a pathetic baby throws a tantrum and looks for someone to blame and vents their spleen. An adult accepts that ‘shit happens’ and moves on. It may have felt like a loss, but we didn’t actually lose. What are these morons going to do when we actually lose? My own wish is that they kill themselves and spare the rest of us from their presence. They will not be missed.

  306. dupsefofocuk not you aswell

  307. Paul, not as embarrassing as the one TH14 played sideways to Pires.

  308. I’m just curious with the English culture and psyche. Why does there have to be blame for everything?

Isn’t it acceptable that the team had a tough game and the result was what it was?

Take the All Blacks for example – undoubtedly the best rugby union outfit on this planet. Yet when they lose a game, they use that experience to learn – not to blame – to learn how they can be better.

9 times out of 10, the teams that meet them after get a good hiding.

I’m sure the players already feel like shit and that flight back from Newcastle will feel like shit.

Wenger for a fact will wait until they get to London Colney tomorrow and they’ll take a sober approach to analysing the match away from all this emotional reaction.

  309. Rosicky has a good shot but it needs working on, he needs to get back to the basics of shooting.

Check him lately, all his shots go into the stands.

  310. Ok so very last thing, looking at these fixtures last year, we’re 2 points better off!

    Last year
    Sunderland away – nil points
    Blackburn away – nil points
    Liverpool away – 3 points

    This year
    Sunderland away – 1 point
    Blackburn away – 3 points
    Liverpool away – 1 point

    Smells like progress to me

  311. I’m looking forward to seeing the new amped-up Denilson next Saturday.

Gutted. But…a long, long way still to go.

    Still unbeaten.

    Still on for the quadruple.

  312. dups, u are sure right about that! silliest penalty in history.

  313. And that has cheered me up, Gadget. Thanks!

  314. ateeb, let’s meet outside, then see if ur mouth still runs.lol

  315. @ darius, its fucking stupid on way or the other, so if rvp’s fouled he wouldnt take the pen? Idiot

  316. What was the point in the dups do you think its going to make us feel any better ffs

  317. Darius,

I don’t know if it’s restricted to the English culture, but in the face of defeat, it is only natural that one looks for the mistakes made, so you could analyze and improve on them. What you term as blaming can be substituted with the word “Analysis” as well. Sure, going, overboard with one’s comments such as threatning to kill players and stuff like that, is immature. But, to find faults that led to the goal is justified.

As Arsene always says ” There are 4-5 mistakes that leads to a goal”. And the last one to make it is the one who draws the criticism. Hmmm.

  318. I hope Cesc is not too badly injured, any news? Our goal today was very fortuitous wasn’t it.

Onto sp*rs on Tuesday, which I’m really looking forward to.

  319. me too matty boy i love your avatar btw.

Im really relieved we have another match on tuesday, i dont think i could live another week still thinking about today’s game.

  320. The best part of all this for me is that I have an ATVO subscription. I’m really not into the kamikaze nonsense of listening to the commentary and punditry on the sports media channels.

I would suspect it feels like poking your eyes with needles. I really sympathize with those who have to listen to the anti-Arsenal bile out there, especially after a day like today.

For those of you who can, I seriously urge you to use the ATVO commentary and turn down the volume of the TV commentary – you might need to rewind the TV feed a few seconds (if you have Sky Plus) because of a time delay to synch the ATVO commentary with the pictures, but it’s worth it for your sanity.

  321. “By the way i apologize for what I said about rosicky it was in the heat of the moment, hopefully people can understand that and my frustration at the time, saying that is low and inexcusable but i dont understand certain people who would just love me to say”

Zap mate…very decent of you. I take it all back. No hard feelings on my part. We all say things in the heat of the moment. I’m as gutted as anyone we didn’t get the full three points. We shouldn’t be slagging off our own players (or each other) though…there’s enough people out there who’d love to see us fail as it is.

    G’night Arsenalists.

  322. If only Darius, if only. Listening to Chris Wadlle today made me feel physically sick, and I’m not talking about his accent. Having a know nothing, ex Sp*rs and Newcastle cunt like him bumbling through an Arsenal, Sunderland game for 95! minutes was just too much.

  323. A combination of Champions League Hangover and midweek exertions. Sunderland didnt have to play a game in midweek and struggled to break us down with 10 men. Bad day at the office simplez.

Thought we had seen this one out till the last second. It was a real battle. The game turned on 4 errors one the referees generous 2nd yello carding of song, Rosickys penalty miss and two defensive mistakes from both teams. For Sunderlands equaliser, The replay shows a defensive clearance richotteing off another arsenal player and falling graciously onto Bents foot again. Gutted. I thought until this point we had done a job on Sunderland aand controllled the game with 10 men, the defense was impecable IMHO Kos and Squillaci, Sagna, Clichy and Almunia were aerially always first to the balls into the box. There will be better days than this. Not losing keeps the momentum. We are still undefeated and unbowed, Hoe bad is Fabrges’ injury?

  324. @ Arseman

So if the ref had seen that foul, we’d have had a free kick and that would have been that? No Sunderland goal? Aaaaaaargh!

  325. Zap – It will be good to get this game out of our systems if we knock Sp*rs out of the only competition they have any chance of doing well in.

  326. Arseman,

Could be the case, I haven’t seen the goal again. And I can’t see anything in that picture. But apart from the clearance, he also played their strikers onside as well. Anyways, fuck it. Happens. Defensively we are a lot better. Strangely, I don’t even seem to miss Vermalean. Which is a great compliment to both Squaillaci and Kol.

  327. FunGunner….cant really recall what exactly happened…was sent this picture by a friend of mine…explaining why Clichy had miscued the clearance so badly

  328. Ateeb agreed….our defense has really stepped up this year…

  329. Ateeb.

Perhaps there’s a different way to look at things. Just because it doesn’t work out, doesn’t mean you have to blame.

The culture of blame is inherently loaded and laced with bad blood. It is possible for the collective to acknowledge what went wrong without the assignment of the negative energy that’s driven by blame.

For example – Wenger never tells a player “You did this really badly and it’s not acceptable”. He’ll most certainly go for an alternative approach of telling a player “this is where and how you can improve ABC”. There’s a subtle but very powerful difference in approach that avoids the blame culture.

The rationale for it is that you have to start from a position that no one goes out of their way to do something wrong and by coming at it with an edge (blame blame blame), you’re already creating an environment where a person or a group of people may find it hard to improve on the issue because of their backs to the wall.

It’s basic psychology. And I used the exact example above because Wenger does actually use that approach with his players (several have publicly pointed out the merits of such an approach).

  330. FG do you think that ref would have given us a free kick?

  331. dupsffokcuf

Daud was batting for Sunderland. He probably would have given them a penalty for Clichy obstracting his fouler who was trying to get to the ball.

Tlesson that the team can learn from today is that we’re not going to get any favours – and that we need to put the game away beyond the reach of any match official.

  332. I agree with you Darius. Like I said, people do go overboard with things. And analysis is essential if you want to see where a mistake lies. However we’re all arm chair managers, I won’t be surprised if the management thinks the biggest mistake that led to the goal happened far higher up the pitch, rather than the one I or most people have identified so far.

  333. Confused about the whole heap of added time after the 4:00 minutes were up.

Seriously how many matches have 4 min’s of added time to begin with.

This is another part of the game, along with dangerous fouls that needs to be sorted.

  334. Paul N

A classic example of how a part of an interview can be taken and sliced to create a loaded story with intent.

Why didn’t they just publish the whole post match interview with the headline – “Arsene’s thoughts on the game”

  335. @ dups

FG do you think that ref would have given us a free kick?

    silly me!

  336. I did not like Rosicky taking that penalty. Nasri should have been there.

  337. You are right DS, Wenger didnt even want to mention Rosicky really.

  338. “On the sending off…
I don’t comment on any decisions by the referee – you have seen the game like I did. Don’t ask me about any decision of the referee.

On whether he was pleased with the overall performance…
Overall very pleased. We could battle, we could play, we had all the ingredients of a good team. We had a slow start but in the second half we did well

On whether Arsenal made their own problems…
We had chances to kill the game, we didn’t do it and I believe the back four did well but we made a mistake on the goal.”

  339. I thought that Koscielny, Squillaci and Almunia did really well today. Sometimes the result obscures the fact that we have a really good defensive ethic building.

I really like Koscielny, he’s a class act.

Bil and Joe would be proud.

  340. Darius….speaking of psychology….i hope Rosicky can move past that missed penalty and keep pushing on…hes been playing like he did pre-injury but im sure this would have dented his confidence…

  341. Arseman.

I would suggest that he will most definitely get over that penalty miss – it’s not a contract breaker.

If his 18 month injury didn’t kill his career, believe me, he’ll get over the penalty.

  342. I have to agree with Darius. I thought we were fantastic defensively. Our center back partnership won almost everything in the air and looked comfortable overall.

Such a bloody shame that we couldn’t win just one more header at the end.

I was shocked when Rosicky took the penalty though, I was screaming for Nasri to take it.

Nasri could well have missed but as he was on freekick duty, he should have been on penalty duty. Ah well, such is life.

Let us make up these points by beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

  343. Looking at the defensive display today it is hard to believe that the CB pairing is so new to the PL.

  344. I’ve been trying to process how I feel since the game ended, and I think that what irks me the most is that the results makes Arsenal open season and fair game for the anti-Arsenal venomous plunditry and hacks and Triple As out there. The bile and poison that comes out of their mouths will be relentless.out

Still don’t know why I should let that piss me off.

As for the team, I have no problems whatsoever, and I’m quite heartened by our defensive performance. Better we get more tested by opposition who apply relentless pressure, than if we cruise through and really don’t get tested.

A point away from home playing with 10 men is not a bad result at all.

  345. Stop crying, Denilson is down the pecking order now.

  346. On a brighter note, I thought the combinations between Nasri and Rosicky in the second half was wonderful to watch.

I would like to see them along with Cesc play more together.

  347. I must say I was surprised to see Rosicky taking the pen but that is not the reason why we dropped 2 points. Just that little nervousness at the end done us. With a little bit of calm nerves we would’ve dealt with it better but it certainly an improvement from last season. We are still unbeaten guys and that all that matters. I take the points we have with the opposition we played than that of Chelsea. They had a nice pack of easy games West Brom West ham Stoke at home, Wigan and Blackpool next the only problem with having lovely comfy easy games is that somewhere during the season they will have a succession of tough games and I’m waiting for that to happen to them. The main thing is to react positively to what happened today, If we reverse the scenarios and we were the ones who got a last minute equaliser people would be saying what a valuable point. We lost this fixture last season but this year we almost got all 3. If we get a point from all the games we lost last season we will most likely win the title
I understdand Zap’s anger. he is no way a doomer so get off his back guys. it feels like a loss. the ref played his part too thanks to fat Sam and co

  348. cmon arsenal i cant wait for tuesday already

  349. thank you 1 loose cannon, harry flowers eventually understood but i dont get shotta-gunna I thought he would have known me better but oh well..

  350. Zap you are not the only one bemused by Rosicky taking a pen this is from the man himself Wenger :
“I didn’t think Rosicky would take it, I thought it would be Samir Nasri,” he said.

  351. But we should not dwell on it and move on, still lots of positives to be taken from this game I thought Kolcieny was awsome today he was at the heart of everything

  352. I am not gonna throw anyone under the bus but if we wouldve taken our chances their late goal wouldnt mean a thing.

Its a good point but lets be honest its two down the drain.

  353. One thing no one has mentioned is the fact that we started -4 of our starters and our captain went off injured. The team that was on the pitch today deserves a round of applause for how well they did down to ten men.

  354. Well the team will be absolutely gutted tonight, a great performance and it is just one of them results that dont go your way. This team has some bottle in it now which we did lack before. gutted to lose two points but im sure we will make them up, cant see this team getting its pants pulled down by Chelsea and Man u this year.

  355. Why is it Nasri can turn it on at home but as soon as we go away he is a different player?

This is a game a team with title aspirations should be winning

Fuck tuesday its the Spuds cup final. The priority is 3pts next week before we go to the Bridge. After tomorrow the gap will be 4pts

  356. watching the game on football first

  357. WTF why the hell isnt it on football first ffs

  358. 5 games 1 clean sheet. We just dont keep clean sheets. We conceded over a goal a game last season its the same pattern this season.Gibbs in for Clichy

  359. Grow up Kenny – Clichy is not entirely responsible for that statistic. Conceding or not conceding goals is down to a combination of factors so the presence or absence of Gibbs is no guarantee of a different outcome.

The best Arsenal player is always the one who is not playing the game we fail to win,.

  360. Arsenal’s best player in my opinion is Chamakh. Nobody works as hard as him. If you go to the match you can see him all the time when the camera isnt on him, only then will you truly appreciate how much he actually runs from the team, constantlymoving and often switching flanks. I love him. And i’m really upset he didn’t score.

    Come on liverpool tomorrow btw..

  361. well said Passenal!

  362. There’s no individual player to single out for blame today. Our team was clearly tired and we admittedly got outplayed in the first half. It happens to even the best of teams. We were without Vermaelen, RvP and Fabregas (at least for 2/3 the match. Kind of like Chelsea w/o Drogba, Lampard and Terry or Liverpool without Torres and Gerrard. After feeling abject anger and sadness this afternoon, I’m slowly calming down. Our team fought very very hard. As someone pointed out, either here or in another blog, Blackburn, Liverpool and Sunderland away last year yielded 3 points. This year it’s yielded 5 points. We’re ahead of the pace.

  363. yes arsechicago, we have definitely improved..

  364. Im not angry, Just frustrated! And pissed off. On the whole situation! I mean we played so well in defence, and i really wanted us to get this points. I really wanted us to win, and i saw us win. I bet the players did to, they were waiting for the ref to blow the whistle. And then in the last attack they panicked cos they knew it was the last attack and kew it would be last attempt for Sunderland to score. And then they scored, in the last second of the match. Its so frustrating.

  365. i know gubis i feel exactly the same way

  366. Im still so fucking annoyed, wathing the penalty on sky+ and I want to slap Rocisky’s face. you’ve got to hit the fucking target !!!!

  367. Tomas, mate, can you do better? Can you play football better than rosicky??!!

  368. Anyone remember this:

    Saturday, October 04, 2008

“Cesc Fabregas headed home in stoppage time to rescue Arsenal from defeat at the Stadium of Light. ”

    Works both ways I suppose.

  369. bradys right foot

Kozzer defensively reminds me of Adams.

  370. Thomas did you want to slap DB10 for missing the penalty in the FA Cup against the mancs?

  371. BRF he definitely has something about him. Seems to like the hard side of the game.

  372. I bet Thomas would soil his underwear if he had to take a penalty in a big game.

  373. @ Zap, you should never hit a penalty over the bar, never. Rocisky never scores, why the fuck did he take the penalty? Nasri or Chamack were the obvious choices.

@dupsffok, you cant compare bergkamp to rocisky. Rocisky is not fit to wipe Bergkamps arse

  374. Tomas, he still never scored that penalty which means that even the best fail sometimes doesn’t it. So get of TR7′s back and support your players,

  375. YW

The last line of your column was “a title challenging team will win these matches” So are we a title challeging team?

  376. Kenny what do you think, are we a title challenging team?

  377. Passenal

Not having a go at Clichy. But on both of their form at the moment i believe Gibbs would be a better optition.Just my opinion

  378. dupsffokcuf

Challenging yes winning no.Chelsea with Essien this season will be too strong for us

  379. What if Essien gets an injury? It is only September. It is a long way to May and we have a lot more experience in our squad.

  380. Let’s see how we do against Chelsea. I think it would knock them back and propel us forward more than the three points at stake if we beat them at the Bridge. It will give us confidence and put doubt in their minds.

Let’s hope Cesc is match fit for that game and is ready.

  381. After wenger demanded ref protection Fat Sam and his friends had their say about Arsenal to influence the referee and he certainly gone to the point of punishing Arsenal unfairly just to prove he is not giving Arsenal preferable treatment. Look at Song’s first yellow card it just silly then 4 minutes extra time becomes 5. Why ? there was no time wasted in extra time why add another minute? But we should have beaten them long before.OK no more ranting what’s done is done. I’ll try get some sleep and hope we have a joyful teusday evening in the tin cup.

  382. I guess the doomers have come out today. It was a kick in the teeth, but every team will have a few of these matches. Hell, United have already had two. 11 points out of 5 matches is a good return, if we bet west brom next week and at least draw with chelsea things will be interesting.

  383. When you have away games like this and the opposition are throwing everything they have at us it’s best to sit back and admire how good our defence is. Kos in particular is a monster.
I believe we’ll break and break their hearts.

By: steww on September 18, 2010
    at 6:21 pm

I personally think that you ruined our chances of winning that game. Cos reading from this comment it tells me that you did jinxed us. cos the game ended a fucking draw. and that equaliser from Darren Bent did Broke my Heart.

  384. Kenny@10.19

Agree 100% we still havent learned to win UGLY

Yesterdays game was a replica of Birmingham last season and of previous games over the last couple of years v Birmingham 2-2 Villa 2-2 and Spurs 4-4.What is wrong with talking the ball into the corner for the last few minutes?

  385. Ian…ask that question to United players.
