Arsenal Hit Six. Only Six? Slackers.

Champions League Group H
Arsenal 6 – 0 SC Braga

1 – 0 Fabregas (pen 9)
2 – 0 Arshavin (23)
3 – 0 Chamakh (29)
4 – 0 Fabregas (53)
5 – 0 Vela (69)
6 – 0 Vela (84)

A record-breaking night for Arsenal, following hot on the heels of Tottenham’s equally impressive evening on Tuesday. Still, I am sure that ‘Appy ‘Arry is more than satisfied with his charges being the first English team to drop a two-goal lead. It’s all about ambition.

Sporting Braga are derided for putting in a poor performance; there was an element of that but to dwell on this aspect diminshes from the professionalism shown by the Arsenal players. From the kick-off, Arsenal set about their opponents, determined to seal victory. The points were won at a canter, expressive individualism combined majestically with expansive passing, the ball slicing through the Braga midfield and defence with the ease of the sharpest knife through the rarest of Sunday roasts. One can never tire of watching such performances, no matter how commonplace they become.

The starting XI contained but one surprise, Jack Wilshere preferred to Denilson, indicative of the attacking verve demanded by the manager. His ambition was rewarded with an excellent performance by the youngster, partnering Alex Song in a more central and deeper lying role than is normally expected at this stage of a fledgling career. Yet this did not stem his attacking verve, his movement off the ball shaming many older than himself.

The formation allowed Cesc Fabregas more freedom on the pitch, supporting Chamakh in attack, the duo played in tandem and holding a tight formation throughout the evening. The captain richly deserved his brace of goals, perhaps disappointed to have not finished with more, unselfishly declining a late opportunity for himself, instead creating Carlos Vela’s late finish.

Fabregas’ display brought forth praise from his manager, post match:

He has taken on another dimension…He is a fantastic influence and it is important that he leads this team to winning and I believe it is a fantastic opportunity for the young players who play alongside him to improve as well…I like that he gave the ball to Vela instead of trying alone. That reflects the way we want to play the game and it reflects the real attitude of a leader. He does what the game wants and is not selfish.

Wenger’s praise is richly deserved for an outstanding return to form in recent days. Equally deserving of commendation is Marouane Chamakh. He pulled the defence out of position, signalled his availability for any colleague to pass to, no matter how close the Portuguese side’s attention and crucially, I cannot recall a time when he lost possession cheaply. Many summers have been shorn of their glory since such a ‘traditional’ strikers performance was seen in an Arsenal shirt.

Within minutes of the start of the match, it was clear that Arsenal would not broker anything other than a win. Two early penalty appeals emerged from hoarse throats, plainitive looks dismissed by the officials. But if you knock on that door often enough, mistakes happen. Fabregas found Chamakh free in the area and as the Moroccan rounded Felipe, the goalkeeper tripped him. Fabregas drilled home his first Arsenal goal since Barcelona in this competition. Wilshere might have been the opener goalscorer moments earlier, flagged offside to spare his blushes as his dinked shot edged the wrong side of the post. He might have doubled the lead shortly after the opener, Fabregas’ deft header let the youngster shoot, Felipe blocking well.

Disconcertingly for Braga, Arsenal were not in full flight but still utterly dominant. Their reward would come as the first half reached its midpoint. Nasri was flagged offside but the referee allowed play to continue, Braga in possession. The clearance was poor and quickly snaffled by Song in the midfield. The ball was worked through to Fabregas who, with a hop, skip and jump, found himself at the edge of the area, fed an unmarked Arshavin, who drilled home from ten yards.

As delightful as the football for the second was, the third was mesmeric. Fabregas and Wilshere wove patterns through the Braga midfield, Sagna’s cross headed clear to the captain, retaining possession and keeping pressure on the visitors. He fed Chamkh on the edge of the area, the Moroccan gratefully received Wilshere’s delightful backheel, passing the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Just reward for a sumptuous performance.

The interval brought no respite. Eight minutes into the second half, Song fed Fabregas, his attempted one-two with Chamakh rebounding to the edge of the area where the Spaniard’s forward run allowed him to smuggle possession wide to Arshavin. The Russian’s cross was inch perfect, his captain providing the straightforward header to set the goals flowing once more.

Would Fabregas seal his third to cap a wonderful individual performance. It was surely a matter of time. Arshavin freed the Spaniard whose effort was sufficiently deflected by Felipe, Moises hooking the ball clear close to his own net. The Russian then went closer, drilling the ball across goal, rattling the woodwork before Braga cleared. The rotation of the squad with a comfortable lead in hand was not going to be an excuse for any easing of pressure.

Braga were then treated to a move which rivalled that of the weekend drubbing of Bolton. Passing simply, the ball went along the back four and returned to the centre, Fabregas and Wilshere moved around the midfield and forwards, Arshavin on the left scampered into the area, Vela lifted the ball gently into the net for the fifth. Truly scrumptious.

As intricate as the fifth was, simplicity was the key to the sixth. Fabregas chased a long pass, Felipe’s clearance was returned with interest as the cushioned header into the path of Vela who calmly slid the ball home at the near post.

Throughout the team there were excellent displays. To pick holes in performances on such evenings is churlish, to ignore mistakes, naive. The ease with which Arsenal controlled the match was due to hard work from Almunia to Chamakh. The team’s improved defensive awareness is showing more with every match.

Clichy knows he was let off the hook before Braga were put to the sword, an error which may have been more costly in another match. Yet defensively he is continuing to improve, regaining the form he displayed before injuries interrupted his progress. Squillaci and Koscielny both had comfortable evenings, intercepting and distributing well. Sagna provided good width on the right and is reaping tangible rewards for his efforts on the training pitch, his crossing consistently better than before.

This day is one to reflect positively on the performance. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Big Brovar 4 Life, wooo.

  2. Cesc is amazing. I thought he took a huge step last year, but this year he might be even better. He’s not as dynamic as Messi, but he might be the best player in the world….

  3. The result was fantastic. However to do it in the epl week in and out could be tough. There are many thugs who would not be deterred from inflicting serious injury on any gunner with the ref turning a blind eye. Moreover in the eye of the guy in black,it would be deemed a legitimate tackel.
Cast your mind back to the gunners seriously/maimed by these thugs.COMPARE THIS TO OTHER TEAMS WHO HAVE PLAYERS SIMILARLY INJURED.The gunners would come top of the injured league. This to me smacks of a deliberate campaign to target the gunners. The only way for the gunners to do would be to beat these thuggish teams. Alternatively the gunners can dish out the brutal stuff thereby playing into the hands of these players. Then the gunners would be banned. Remember 1989-99 when gunners were banned all over. You never know.

  4. Just a great performance by the team and especially our captain. Although Clichy still needs to work on his positional play, I agree that he is improving. Gibbs is also a fantastic option.

I agree that we weren’t even at our best and can see the potential improvements with passing accuracy, defensive confidence and understanding. I say this on the back of an evening that took my breadth away.

Am I positive about our future (injuries not withstanding)? Do bears… in the woods!?

    COYG

  5. Fantastic game. I had multiple incidents in my pants this morning.

Churlish it may be, grumbling in the aftermath of a game like that, but I’d really prefer to see Gibbs given a run out. Or maybe I’m wrong

  6. You was lucky

  7. Great post Yogi. Today is about celebrating a masterful display of attacking football. There are many other days for complaining about the fact that the defence is not perfect. But they are a work in progress and definitely heading in the right direction.

As for Braga, I think we shocked them by the way we started and they never really had time to settle into the game, which is why we were able to dominate them so completely.

  8. An excellent display, with Cesc/Wilshere/Chamakh standing our. Props to AA and Nasri as well for good games. To be fair, everyobdy played well.

The movment off the ball was a joy to watch, and some of the finishes clinical as you are likely to see. In this mood I honestly believe that we would have beaten anybody. The defence were not really tested, but when they were they delat with any threat easily.

Before the mtach Southgate and Townsend were saying it would be a test, and Braga were a decent side. Only after the match did they decide that this was not the case. What a load of tosh!

Hopefully we will take the momentum into the weekend

  9. James – Indeed we were. Lucky we did not perform like your mob.

  10. It was a fantastic game. So many MOTM, the defence didnt do a single thing wrong, Almunia was solid as he has been all the games we have played this season. Song did give away passes easily to the opposition but he later made up for it. Ooh and our”fantabolous” captain what more can i say? Chamakh is nowhere near “a traditional striker”am yet to figure out what to call him but i can say he is awesome as he has all attributes of a great player rolled into one. Overall the team made me proud, and we did get a clean sheet.

Maria Vela is growing on me, Our new super sub.

  11. Goonerandy, Fabregas aimed for the other corner with that penalty.

  12. James. don’t you wish you supported the Arsenal?

  13. I was wondering what the extra officials were doing there. They were either clueless (for the penalty on Cesc) or told to just stand there and do nothing.

  14. the extra officials stand there with their rods in there hands ready to wave it about to get the attention of the ref if it looks like hes missed something – like a man standing on the field with his rod in his hand!!!

  15. cushioned header for the 6th goal??!! when did that happen?

  16. we were playing with a few key players out injured. the depth of squad is our strength. hope we can keep the momentum and beat Spuds and Chelski in the next few weeks.

only by doing this, we can prove we are true title contenders this year!!

  17. Scrumptious indeed! I missed the first half, but the football in the second half was enough to make me go weak. I was quivering from unadulterated joy. It was better than sharing a bed with a few of my conquests. The passing, the movement, the finishing, oh my. I would prefer seeing play like that everyweek than seeing us lift a trophy – except that’s a false bargain, cause playing like that, we’ll get the trophies.

Am I mistaken in thinking Arshavin’s workrate has improved drastically. Against Bolton & Braga he looked to be everywhere.

    4B’s 4 victories!

  18. A performance which truly demonstrated the class in this Arsenal side, albeit against opposition which has suddenly realised that their domestic league is a long way from the teams they will meet in the CL.
Wilshere looks so assured in the role he played in last night, playing off Fabregas and always offering himself as a willing recipient for a pass.
Fabregas has shown himself to be a true professional, rather than sulking over his failed move to Barcelona he has got on with his job and once again shown what a great player he is – a move next summer is not guaranteed as I’m not convinced Barcelona will be able to afford him as the price is likely to just go up and up.
I’m very impressed at how well Chamakh has settled in to the team, 3 goals in 5 games in your first season in the Premiership – how good is that?
And finally a word about the old man of the team, Squillaci – Have I missed something? Did we really buy him this summer, or has he actually been playing for Arsenal for years? Great to see another defender turn up for work on his first day at the club and look like he is part of the furniture. It’s hard to call which is our best centre back pairing on recent performances.

  19. Arguably, aesthetically, the best football ever played by an Arsenal side. (Has anyone here seen better?)

…and best of all, NO ONE GOT INJURED!

Gratitude is the word that comes to mind… Thank you AW, thank you lads for that delectable feast of football!

Thank you Braga for being good sports.
Now back to reality and the EPL.

  20. Chamakh was bloody everywhere.

He is such a hard worker, and icey cool and silky smooth in possesion. He will sureley get better still though.

He has found his home at the Arsenal, that’s for sure.

  21. That was one of the most beautiful attacking displays i’ve ever seen. Also one of the most determined defensive displays i’ve seen from us.

No matter how early Braga realised they’d lost the game, they didnt give up as the commentators suggested, they were still harrying and pressing and going in for tough tackles pretty much all game. But Our collective determination in the tackle (as well as attacking) was a joy to watch. This team seem to have found the extra toughness that has lost us games in the past, and with the likes of Chamakh, Nasri and even Arsh pressing from the front makes all the difference.

A word for Almunia too, he didnt have to do much but when he did, he looked as solid as any keeper i’ve seen.

It was also nice to see Vela getting some time in the CF role, dropping back to lay off passes while still making those perfectly timed runs, resulting in a brace for the dreamy little mexican. Lovely stuff.

Wilshere was outstanding and (i hate to say it) but his Bolton days seems to have really matured the youngster. But he has the creativity second only to Cesc (and possibly Rooney) at that age.

Cesc – dont need to say anything…

Special things will happen this year with this new team. Fact.

  22. The boys performance last night was just magnificient, this is what football is all about! Artist playing together. Wenger seemed to have a great signing last year with Vermalen but what can we say about this summer shopping! They integrated the team so well and seems to haveArsenal’s DNA. Chamack to be the signing of the season! (especially having cost nothing)

  23. Jackie!!!!!!!!

love him playing with head up!!

  24. gunnerluc – Koschielny and Scquillachi too..? Awesome. Wilshere’s ‘like a new signing’ too ;-)

Where are all the doomers (AIC etc) on days like this? Suspiciously quiet…

  25. I didnt take Darius’ advice and listen to ATVO commentary last night and had to put up with the ITV wankers. Wish i hadnt. But Townsend is becoming one of my most hated pundits – and that say A LOT!!

He was saying stuff like ‘i’m not going to knock them after a performance like that but…’ and saying ‘i just can’t see them winning anything when it comes down to it at the end of the season… etc etc’

It makes me so angry. If it were Manure of Chavski they’d be having multiple crotch moistening issues after a performance like that, with superlatives oozing out of their disgusting faces… I must say though, i do like Southgate who often gives a very reasonable and impartial analysis, shame he has to sit next to those 2 cunts.

  26. Cesc is simply incredible. Creates just about everything, sees openings everywhere, always 3 steps ahead of the opposition. Truly world class.

Also really happy for Chamack. Was a bit wary of him, but he settled into the style immediately and his movement is brilliant.

    Now bring on Sunderland!

  27. Let us forget about the media. When we win the title this season they will all shut up. And even if they won’t, we would hardly care.

  28. Unrelated, by it was painful to see Ajax. I have a soft spot for them for what they have contributed to football, but they have become a nothing team. Sad.

  29. “Let us forget about the media. When we win the title this season they will all shut up. And even if they won’t, we would hardly care.”

You’re right Keysersoze, but it’s hard to take after a night like that! I just want to see their faces when Wenger’s force feeding all these bastards some massively over-sized wedges of humble pie…

  30. I’m here Geo.

A great performance and some fantastic goals.

In response to leftpinky, Cesc has been the best player in the world in m opinion for a while now.

  31. geo

There are great too! That’s why this summer shopping has been a masterstroke by Wenger but Chamack is getting better with every game! Wilshere has matured into a great player and Cesc well every time you think he can’t get better he get in an other dimension like Wenger said!

With this squad, i can’t see any reason for not winning trophies and if we keep playing that way there is no way Fab will want to leave us we can dominate the EPL and Europe for another decade!

  32. Hey Alex, nice to hear some positive words! What do you think about Almunia’s impressive season so far?

  33. Funny how when we win big it’s always because the opposition is poor, but when Utd or Chelsea win it’s because they’re so brilliant (rolls eyes).

Wilshere showed exactly why Wenger rates him so highly. He looked every inch Cesc’s heir apparent last night. And to think he’s still only 18. The future is in good hands with him and Ramsey.

    http://thearmchairsportsfan.com/2010/09/16/wilshere-stakes-claim-as-fabregas-heir-apparent/

  34. Absolutely superb performance!

Fabregas and Arshavin look to be getting back to there best, Jack is coming on in leaps and bounds, Nasri coming back as if he had never been away and the defence looking good, with excellent cover across the squad.

And Chamakh? The boy has the potential to be a legend for us – signing of the season already!

However, it is important not to get carried away.

Braga were very poor, it is amazing that Portugeuse teams just do not travel – You can bet your bottom dollar they will give us a game away from home.

Important to now keep the feet on the ground, and go and get a result against Sunderland.

Chelsea are at home to Blackpool, and we need the 3 points to stay in touch with the russians so we are still only 2 points back when we play them.

  35. geo

Despite the Good performance we will still End winning Nothing. But last night was actually one of the best performance that I have ever seen. But it will take something special for us to win any sort of Trophy.

  36. I agree gunnerluc – to think that this team is still young, with at least 5 years before most of them even reach late 20′s is just ridiculous. If we can keep the majority of our players, we will dominate for years to come. I can’t see why any of them would want to leave at this point, they seem to be enjoying every moment and have come together like never before – particularly after the Ramsey incident.

Has anyone noticed how our players (Vela in particular) play with a massive smile on their face the whole time? I love that.

  37. Matt

You’re a cheery soul this morning. Let’s get carried away today and be sensible tomorrow. Live the dream, dude.

    YW

  38. You sound like Andy Townsend AIC.

  39. gooner2 – it takes something special from any team to win a trophy, who said it would be easy or we will … but we can

  40. Still buzzing with last night’s win. Saw the match twice and the 2nd half trice before I finally decided to call it a day.. Downloaded the game from the ATVO. Will be watching again 2day…

Regarding the Media’s response on yesterday’s game, Arsene’s post-match comments was the perfect treatment. If anyone hasn’t read it yet, do read it..

  41. What was noticeable to me is that a lot of high risk, high reward play was attempted (in attack). Sometimes it didn’t come off and a pass was intercepted, but the team never stopped playing like this, and so the goals came and came.

Then in defence duties, super-charged is the word. No matter we were 5-0 up, when Braga got the ball everybody got interested in getting it back. I saw Cesc doing a Song, and Eboue hurtling back 70 metres (having lost a ball on the left wing with an attempted first touch pass to release a player) to get the ball back. He tackled the Braga player on the right side of our defence.
I saw Chamakh where Song might be at one point, Nasri at left back and Wilshere everywhere.

Which brings the third interesting thing. Nasri and Arsh switching positions left and right, Chamakh and Nasri switching, Song and Nasri and Wilshere and Cesc all switching constantly. Something.

Vela’s shooting boots look sharp, decisive, which is an interesting development for Wenger. Vela came on for Chamakh, Eboue for Arshavin.

I get the feeling this side are just getting warmed up. We are not yet in top gear, but flashes of that. CL opposition accelerates this for Arsenal, EPL slows it down. But the direction is clear.

  42. deisegooner

It’s just just we have’nt a single trophy in the past 6 years. and that’s basically the reason why I said tha it will take something special for us to win a trophy. but obviously it will be upto our players to produce some of the magic.and if they do that then everything should be alright.

  43. gooner2, you know that’s not true. We’ve had Emirates Cups. We’ve won “most injured team of the year” for the last 5 years at least. And the “biggest proportion of doomer fans after a 6 – 0 victory in Europe” trophy (actually a wooden spoon).

  44. ZimPaul,

The interchanging was awesome and yesterday was one of the best if not the best.. The front 6 were soo fluid that it was hard to guess who would popup where..

  45. We’ve got the agression that was the only piece of the puzzle missing last year, and with players like Chamakh, LK and Wilshere coming into the fray, i think those special things you’re talking about, gooner2, will happen.

  46. hahahaha Rinseout!

  47. Rinseout @ 10:30am,

    Priceles..

  48. I thought the first half of my post was more than cheery Yogi!

But you do have to temper it a little – Sunderland hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for us, and it is vital we don’t drift too far behind Chelsea, given there easy start to the season.

Besides – what’s there not to be happy about… Brilliant night at the Emirates, and sitting top of the ACLF Fantasy league!

  49. In fact – I think this squad is the best we have had since the 2004 team – so many quality players all over the squad.

  50. Matt – i think we have a much better squad now. The first team back them was probably just about superior but as far as quality in depth goes, this squad is so much more adaptable…

  51. Geo,

I have been revealed, my name is really Andy Ice Cream.

    Oh the shame!

He’s not perfect my any means but Manuel is our |No1 for the forseeable so we have to support him.

  52. “Football teaches you one thing – be open-minded and never have a definite opinion. You need to have opinions sometimes but you always have to have an open mind on players because you can never predict how quickly they develop.”
    – The Great Lord Wenger

If only more people would pay attention to his gospel!

  53. Matt, I agree with Geo at 10-40.

We’ve a much better ‘Squad’ right now but not the better ‘First XI’

  54. You are probably right Geo!

Now if only this squad were as lucky with injuries as that team!

  55. Heh, yeah true dat Matt! Fingers crossed…

  56. In addition to YW & most comments about a great entertaining display, what I noticed was a very keen determination not to concede particularly nearing the end.

To me that shows a very significant change of attitude that is most welcome.

The team needs to be proud of its defending because soft goals in games like these can lead to the same when it really matters.

  57. “He’s not perfect [by] any means but Manuel is our No1 for the forseeable so we have to support him.”
    - AIC

If there’s ever a sentence which summed someone up so perfect and succintly, it’s this.

  58. For clarification, that someone being the author.

  59. Great to see Flint, getting rid of the soft goals will surely see us go very very close to a trophy this year.

Only 2 games in, but I have been impressed with Squillaci and Koscielny so far – especially their attitudes, they seem to relish a battle.

As good as some defenders from our recent history were, you maybe couldn’t of always argued the case for them in the same way.

  60. For me Wilshere’s flick to Chamakh to score was the greatest moment. And he hit it with the “wrong” leg! With his back to Chamakh I thought he’d flicked it with his right foot which was raised only for the replay to show it was actually the left foot which was still on the ground. Sheer class. Not what you’d expect from an English footballer! Reminds me of Messi scoring against us through the legs of a defender and the goalkeeper. Wenger had said only an exceptional player could have done. Wilshere may yet get there.

Tim, I love your icon. Danger mouse’s side kick. Can’t remember his name though.

  61. Gadget at 9:06 am

    “4B’s, 4 victories”.

The next B I’m looking forward to thrash is Barcelona! :D

  62. What a wonderful performance last night.

Most of all – I loved to see how the work ethic took pressure off the defence. To a man, everyone put their shoulder to the wheel which was most encouraging.

And my word – Chamahk really is a superb acquisition. I was so impressed with how he worked for the team.

  63. Call the cops. This Arsenal team is having an improper influence on some fans:

Maddy @ 8:05am: “Fantastic game. I had multiple incidents in my pants this morning.”

Gadget @ 9:06 am: “I was quivering from unadulterated joy. It was better than sharing a bed with a few of my conquests.”

  64. Nothing to add to the comments by most of you. We were wonderful to watch.

Let’s hope we go to Sunderland, and not pick up any injuries. I would love to see Chamakh have a go at Chelsea. It will be an interesting battle.

It’s ill advised to judge a player so early on, but Jack was amazing last night. His creative play was superb. Something that Nasri hasn’t been able to do. I don’t know perhaps it’s to do with him not getting a good run in the team because of his injuries. But I really think, he hasn’t delivered as much as we all expected. Sure he’s 21, and I’d be glad if he improves. It’s about time, he’s been around a while.

  65. (Before YW has a go at me) let me say I am deliriously happy about our team’s performance last night. Like Flint and others, I was impressed by our defending and the no nonsense approach by Kos and Squillacci (sp) in particular.

However it is difficult for me to come to terms with the triumphalism and hypocrisy coming from certain blogs and posters who prior to the season and as the transfer window drew to a close were vicious and merciless in their criticism of AW and his signings, of this squad, and of the corp of goal-keepers. I call no names but it is simply amazing and their is absolutely no ounce of contrition.

Now YW you can have a go at me. But you have a right as the integrity of your blog is impeccable.

  66. I think that’s slightly harsh on Nasri. He started in goalscoring form when he first joined – but that isn’t really his game. He’s tenacious, and brilliant at holding onto the ball until the right moment. The way he battles for an attacking player is great to watch. It’s exaclty the kind of influence we need – when an attacker is chasing back and pressing like he does, it makes the others take note and do the same – even Arsh!!

  67. my comment was @ ateeb btw

  68. I thought Nasri looked great last night – particularly as it was his first start after surgery.

  69. “However it is difficult for me to come to terms with the triumphalism and hypocrisy coming from certain blogs and posters who prior to the season and as the transfer window drew to a close were vicious and merciless in their criticism of AW and his signings, of this squad, and of the corp of goal-keepers. I call no names but it is simply amazing and their is absolutely no ounce of contrition.”

I agree shotta. I always had the faith that’s for sure…

  70. Begs the question…

If everyone is fit and in form what is the best starting XI?

For me: Almunia, Sanga, Koscielny, Vermaelen, Clichy, Fabregas, Song, Diaby, Walcott, Chamakh, Van Persie.

Our front three have enormous quality in variation.

    Pace, Power, Technique.

  71. Atteb- I don’t agree regarding Nasri. in the pre season he was the best on the pitch up until his injury. last night was his first game since the injury, he is a wonderful dribbler of the ball causes a lot problems to the opposition. Wilshere is nailing that spot for him and Denilson will have to look over his shoulders but competition is a good thing Also Bendtner will have to compete with Chamakh Clichy will certainly need to be at his best as Gibbs is simply waiting to pounce on his chance. I could not say this 2 seasons ago but now we have 2 top players in almost every position and that is a sign of a strong squad. One addition and that is an experienced keeper and not necessarily to replace Almunia but simply to compete with him even if Schwartzer comes in January as it has been reported, he will not be guaranteed that number 1 spot but he will have to fight it out with Almunia as I think so far he has done a fine job.

  72. deano – I’d even be tempted to have Gibbs in as first choice (controversial maybe?) and Arsh in for Theo… Arsh on form can be one of the best in the world.

  73. I agree 1LC, although Almunia has done nothing (so far) to suggest he’s lacking the confidence and experience to win something this year.

  74. Classic responses from AA:

arshavin.eu: Last time you didn’t manage to score. Today: a goal + you hit the bar. Have you been working on it during training or you just gave it some thought?
AA: It’s simple – I put on another pair of boots ;)

arshavin.eu: And yet, more often than not, the combinations involving Fabregas and Arshavin, if not led to a goal, then to the dangerous moments, for sure. In fact Cesc himself scored after your pass.
AA: And I scored after his :) . He is the brain of our team, he leads the whole game.

  75. Geo-Gibbs is certainly pushing Clichy now. But Clichy has the edge in experience and I’m convinced he will go up a gear again this season.

I would love it if we could have a starting 15 as having players of the quality of Rosicky, Denilson, Gibbs, Wilshere, Ramsey and Bendtner on the bench is just embarrasing a glut of talent….

  76. Note- Almunia’s wonderful mid air pluck in the second half.

  77. Deano-If Cheszney( Fab -Manone) Djouro Squilacci eboue Gibbs. Denilson Wilshere Nasri Rosicky, Arshavin Vela Bendtner are second string to the 11 you picked then we can land a trophy this season and maybe the big one we have the strength in pepth to compete on all fronts

  78. The contrast with Sunderland, doing well I suppose this season, will be interesting. Braga are a good side (I believe they scored 9 disposing of Celtic and Sevilla) and they tried to close down in the middle. Sunderland will have watched and have other ideas, including a tackle or two and perhaps 8 across the back, although they are better than that (I hope).

Be interesting also to see what team goes out. Arsh/Vela, Nasri/Rosicky, Eboue? The others seem certainties.

  79. deano – i hope Clichy will step it up with Gibbs hot on his tail, as he still has those lapses (like that scary moment last night) that i think Gibbs would be less inclined to do, trying to impress by being solid defensively. But hopefully you’re right.

An embarrasment of riches – is that the plural noun for riches – like a murder of crows? or an unkindness of ravens?

  80. a rabble of butterflies? horde of hamsters? crash of rhinocerouses?

  81. Something that seems to have been (understandably) glossed over for Chamakh’s goal. Watch how quick he “sorts his feet out” when he recieves Wilshere’s backheel. It was not as easy as it looked and was very impressive.

  82. No better group of players to support, everyone of the players made me proud last night and you just gotta admire each of them for their attitudes. They all worked, tackled and ran for each other on top of playing probably the best attacking game of football anyone has seen. This was not a Barcelona 25minute master class, this was a 90minute complete footballing work of art.

This isn’t just last night though, every game this season we have showed a very strong desire as a team to defend from the front, this is vital to the system and attacking football we play.

I agree like a previous poster said, if any team was out there lined up against us, we would have done exactly the same to them.

Oh wait, in the Premiership this cannot happen as often because teams play physical (anti football) fouling all over the shot. Don’t worry though, all you little teams and Chelsea even, we have a bit more physical to give back, and plenty of goals to show who is the true footballing club on the planet.

Like Song said, fu*k Barca, fu*k United, fu*k Chelsea, fuc* City, we have the best team in the World.

Only a blind man (like the few on MOTD) cant see it.

Rooney, Anelka, Lampard would struggle to make our bench. I’d rather have Vela, Rosicky, and Eboue! Saying that we were missing Van Persie, Bendtner, Vermalaen.. etc etc…

Our squad completely kills Chelsea’s and United’s, I hope after last night more people will believe in the team, the squad and EVERY player a bit more. We can do something very special..

  83. Clichy was amazingly good I thought, yes I noticed when 2 players were hot on his heels he slipped up once.. but I think he made up for it during the 90mins.

He was everywhere up the left touch line, countless interceptions, got himself out of some very tricky situations very tidily, and very good going forward. His experience for me certainly shows when you compare him with Gibbs. Saying that I admire Gibbs very much, and he has the raw ability to be a great LB too.

Clichy for me was one of the stand out performers last night. Song had a quiet but efficient game, losing the ball a few times once again though I noticed but you can’t fault him for that, even Wilshire made a few innacurate passes.

Koscielny had 91% success rate on his passing, best in the team. While Clichy was a close 2nd but made a whole load more.

Chamakh is amazing, you can’t really want more from a striker… well unless you have Robin Van Persie available! How on earth are we going to play them 2 together!!??? I keep asking that, and I put the question forward before the season got started…

  84. We may be OK avioding dangerous tackles against Sunderland – Cattermole is suspended!

Agree with most on Nasri – a lovely footballer, great feet, always willing to get involved, rarely gives the ball away and a great team player.

Time for lunch and to watch the highlights!

  85. ZimP – Amidst your commendations for the frequent interchange and switches between attacking players, you forgot to mention the switch between Eboue and Nasri. The King started on the right while Nasri went left. They then switched for decent intervals at least twice. On one of those occasions the King lost the ball on the right and made a run about 60 yds across the ball to make the tackle.
    Impressive.

  86. IG – great to see AA prove what I said during the game last night!!
Even if we lose every other match from now until next year no one can take last night away from us.
    What a brilliant team.

  87. True steww. No one can take last night away from us..

  88. The spirit of Anansi is alive and well…
We only came to see Eboue!

  89. Rinseout

we have never missed out on winning the Emirates Cup. and every year we all know that Jack is always The Player of that Tournament. And if we somehow get our players to be fit.But it all depend on the fitness of our our players.Cos if they can all manage to be fit for the rest of season then I may sence something special.

  90. Nasri made some really important interceptions. Maybe his style is not as ‘direct’ as some would like. He will only get better!

AA and TW14 started the same way against Liverpool, switching flanks.

  91. It’s difficult to escape the familiar feeling that Arsenal will again get found out against teams who dominate them physically. Spain might have won the last two major international tournaments playing beautiful one-touch football but that flair is backed up by the steel of Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and at Euro 2008, Marcos Senna.

Despite the undeniable attributes of a player like Abou Diaby and the robust defending of Thomas Vermaelen Arsenal are still a team packed with lightweight players.

    http://www.itv.com/sport/football/championsleague/news/bloghistorysettorepeatitselfatarsenal/

  92. Kevin McCarra’s slipped mask in The Grunt was funny.

“Occasions of this sort emphasise the richness of technique, imagination and athleticism at Arsenal’s disposal. A different sort of game will be needed to establish whether durability is present as well but nobody can deny the supporters’ right to their mood of anticipation.”

What other ‘game’ could he be talking about? (Did he miss the recent games for this squad?) A game where technique, and atheleticism are not needed.
    Curling?

  93. mis spelling sighs again. < athleticism

  94. Nasri could be more direct, but in that department he is an upgrade on Hleb, whom he was bought to replace, I reckon.

Anyway. Did I say we are fabulous? Because we are, you know.

I think we’ll be fine for Sunderland in terms of feet staying on the ground, these days we are experienced enough to stay focussed.

    ***
    @ Finsbury

Lazy and biased are the words you’re looking for. The sad fact is that they will keep repeating the same nonsense until we win a trophy, because that is the only achievement or form of improvement they can recognise. And when we do win, we will suddenly be unable to do anything wrong, as most of our critics will turn into sycophants. I don’t follow my own, I know, but it is best to ignore those chumps.

  95. “I don’t follow my own advice“, I meant to say!

  96. What a great day to be a gooner. Pure class in that performance, which completely summed up Arsenal under Wenger.

The season looks very exciting now. I think something big is going to happen for us now.

Yes I am getting carried away.

  97. FunGunner

I try to ignore the plunditry, and just focus on the football. But with so many repeatedly calling for teams to get ‘stuck in’ against Arsenal and after the last weeks’ incidents, it’s hard to ignore.

Hleb was one of the most amazing, unique players I’ve ever seen. Really sad when he left, but I agree, between Nasri, Diaby’s dribbling which might or might not owe a little to training sessions with Hleb, (please be OK Diaby!) and the others, he won’t be missed!

  98. Anyway,

    Fuck ‘em all…

  99. The media hate us, but frizuck it I hate them too.

Whoever was interviewing Arsene last night for ITV was terrible. Always digging for controversy, disceptively congratulatory, the asker of a truely vapid and vacuous question: “how does Jack Wilshire compare to Cesc when he was 18?”

Fortunately, I possess eyes which are strong of focus, a mind sharp and detailed, and a will tempered enough to forge and argue my own opinion. Who needs the media?

  100. I agree with Finsbury.

  101. I love both the cynicism in the media about this latest result, as well as the reaction from Wenger and the players.

I think it’s great that we can play the way we did last night without people heaping expectation on the team, because they’ve seen us win like this before, and then fail in bigger tests.

It’s created a perfect environment for us – we can keep improving and nobody’s going to get carried away.

I stopped enjoying last night after the fourth or fifth goal, when it all turned a bit ugly. Like a really one-sided boxing match that doesn’t get stopped in time.

  102. Worrying stuff about Diaby though. AW mentioned a bit of ligament damage in there. Desperately hope he’ll be back for Chelsea.

  103. Just imagine how good we’ll be when the new all-star players arrive!

YW – are you sure about the Spuds being the first English team to drop a two-goal lead in the Champions League? I seem to remember being rather upset after a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich – I’m sure we went two-up! I recall being the only Gooner in a tube full of happy Germans on the way home!

  104. The pundits were a disgrace once again, and they proved also their inability to evolve with football.

We have shown the way forward to the footballing world. Wenger has cited the overly dangerous nature of foul play in the Premiership as detrimental and they have their backs up, they just can’t handle the reality or a French man telling them where its going wrong.

There was one idiot on Five live saying how Wenger should keep quiet and stick to making his team play brilliant football, I think he was from the Mirror. Someone from the Mirror trying to give advice to probably the TOP manager in football, the manager that always shows the way!

If the referees allowed football in the Premiership to be played ‘fairly’ we would roll everyone over 6-0 week in week out. Like I said yesterday, there is probably 20-30 incidents in a game that get waved on where players stop the flow of the game – be it by pulling a shirt, grabbing an elbow, shoving in the box…

If it was Arsenal vs Wolves last night, the referee wouldn’t have allowed Arsenal the right to play football as he would have allowed the opposition to use such tactics. Braga never resorted to that, maybe that was partly down to inexperience?

My point is, we should be watching a fair game of football every week, where the best team wins. This doesn’t happen in the Premiership, and this is probably why it is so competitive as the smaller teams have the luxury of using such tactics to disrupt the other team from playing football.

I don’t see why Arsenal should change to suit the foul play of the Premiership, Wenger never has, but we have evolved never the less. With Chamakh, Kosc, and our developed steel combined with an abundance of talent and options in all positions, nothing can stop us now.

The media can shut the fuck up in May. Wenger will be grinning a massive I told you so. :)

  105. Tim Vickery:

Football is about moving the ball with precision at pace – and Fabregas does that. His range of passing is superb, he has the calmness on the ball to select the right option and the physical dynamism to exert an influence on all phases of possession, from deep in his own half to deep in the opposing penalty area.

I’ve seen some fine performances from Juan Sebastian Veron of Estudiantes over the past couple of years but nothing of this calibre. Fabregas tore Braga to pieces. Back in 1992, it was inconceivable that a player like this would be playing football like this in a stadium like this in North London.

There may be fully justified gripes about ticket prices and lack of atmosphere. But – and I am not of the Arsenal persuasion – I left the Emirates more than a little jealous of those who are watching Arsene Wenger’s team on a regular basis.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/timvickery/2010/09/emirates_experience_leaves_me.html

  106. Great stuff Ole

  107. CG,

Tim Vickery says what I’ve always said about Cesc in arguing that he’s better than Xavi. He has a better more superior range of passing compared to Xavi. And he’s just as accurate, and has as much stamina. yet he has far more of an end product despite being part of a less developed team (I don’t think Barca are better, Messi apart, just at a later stage of squad devt.).

To me if people say Xavi is the best midfielder int he world, I say Cesc must be the best midfielder in the world because he’s a better player than Xavi Hernandez.

    And he’s only 23.

And I’d like to see Xavi try to cut it in the Premier League. Easy to pass pass when you’re not having lumps kicked out of you every minute of every game.

  108. Excellent piece. Good times to be a gooner.

  109. Great post OG – agree 100%

  110. Oh but you forgot to mention – Xavi’s a cunt.

  111. I don’t think there is much between them…….but Geo’s point @ 1:51 is a certainty.

  112. Ole at 1:46pm,

Agree 100%. Xavi wouldn’t survive 5mins in a PL game..

  113. He would. He is an excllent player, and would be fine in the lge I would think.

  114. Ole

I have no doubts in my mind that Cesc is a better player, as you say.. a better finisher and more end product.

Can Xavi sprint from end to end for 90mins like Cesc did last night? Cesc is for me the best central attacking midfielder on the planet. You watch Cesc and compare to the rave reviews that are given to Lampard and Gerrard who are meant to be World Class and you just gotta laugh!

Xavi is a good player, but I agree, if he is called the best central midfielder on the planet, when Cesc playing in the best league, more competitive, more aggressive, faster, and more games during the season.. Cesc pisses all over him… Cescs goals last season was more than their whole midfield.

    Pundits need to wake up.

  115. All credit to the Arsenalistas who, even at 4-0 down and without their team having a sniff of the ball, were still doing the conga.

Clichy! Jackie! Manuel! So many stars.

  116. CG,
Plundits need to wake up?? Not anytime soon.. Cesc is better than Xavi by a long margin. The WC Final was a perfect example. Cesc was more effective than Xavi even though Cesc came on a substitute..

  117. I think Xavi would find out pretty quickly, like Deco before him, that continually throwing yourself to ground without even the merest hint of contact, will not get you very far in England.

But if he does come I hope he goes to Chelsea.

  118. Francesc “Cesc” Fàbregas i Soler 190 app 32 gls.
Xavier Hernández Creus 354 app 35 gls

    Quite a difference.

  119. On a different note, has anyone read Walrus’s comment about Arsene having the media and refs in his pocket.. It didn’t make sense at first but when I reread it after substituting Red Nose for Arsene, the comments made sense..

  120. Xavi has also played 40 more games for Spain and only scored 2 more goals than Cesc.

  121. dups,

If you consider the assists too, Cesc would be a long way ahead…

  122. Limpar

Xavi and Chelsea would be the perfect match, he would fit in nicely indeed .. haha

  123. My opinion (for what it’s worth) is Xavi would be another Reyes if he left Spain to move to the PL.

  124. Very true that cesc is the best midfielder in europe right now. He’ll need to win trophies to officially take the title from Xavi though.

  125. The fact that he plays in the PL won’t help his case that much either. It seems the powers that be prefer continental players for their awards…

  126. dupsffokcuf

Agreed, he is far too lightweight and falls far too much for my liking. It does win Barca plenty of possession, but I found it extremely boring watching the guy at the World Cup personally.

I always had this impression of him before he started making the Cesc to Barca advertisements!

Saying that, whenever Cesc does go, and for the extroardinary sum they will have to pay! He will outshine any achievement Xavi has brought to Barca. Anyway, by then Arsenal will be the recognised heavy weights of Europe.

  127. Guess who’s still a cunt…

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/blackburn_rovers/9005631.stm

“The one restriction has to be full commitment with the intention of going for the ball and only for the ball. Then, I prefer English football ten times as much to the European game. The English game becomes dangerous when the players go to hurt each other. You need intention aligned with the type of game you play in England.” AW

How clever of him to try and influence referees and everyone in football into enforcing the actual, age-old rules of the game.

    Fat c*nt.

  128. I always wondered why people think you have to win a trophy in a team sport to be the best individual.

I still blame this mentality for Thierry Henry not winning the world footballer of the year in 2002-2005 when he was the best forward on the planet for quite a few seasons.

  129. Great performance yesterday. Attack was sublime. Nothing more can be said about that virtuoso performance. The energy and effort that they put in tracking back is infectious. We have a big enough squad that we can rotate and hopefully keep that energy level all year.

Almunia had little to do which is the way it should be. What he did was good. SS and the KOS were superb. I do not recall either of them making runs over the 1/2 way line during open play. Positioning, organization and game reading all seemed spot on. When we beat Porto 5 – 0 last year I remember lots of talk about how despite keeping a clean sheet our defense looked suspect. Not this time. What a difference a year can make. Keep it rolling this weekend, another clean sheet please.

  130. So, using Fat Sam’s flawless logic, Robinson must be:

    a) So uncoordinated that he is incapable of tying his own shoelaces,
    b) He has impaired vision, (really good on the trumpet, not much good at football)

    or

    c) He is a coward?

  131. Ole – I also found it strange he never won that award. As you say, he was easily the best player in the world for a number of years.

  132. Totally agree Ole. Its a stupid idea. Trophy is reward enough for teams that win titles. Don’t get why their key players should almost always be rewarded with the individual awards as well, even if there were better players in a less successful team

  133. Shotta;

“However it is difficult for me to come to terms with the triumphalism and hypocrisy coming from certain blogs and posters who prior to the season and as the transfer window drew to a close were vicious and merciless in their criticism of AW and his signings, of this squad, and of the corp of goal-keepers. ”

I think you’d find that many (not all) of those criticisms came from people who love the Arsenal. I’m sure that such fans will be happy to be proved wrong.

I was one of the few who were happy with the squad and Almunia as GK but I still think its too early to start the i-told-you-so.

  134. super win yesterday…but its early days yet and we dont wnat to get too carried away…lets kick one and kick in some teet up at the stadium of light…was jus wondering when VP is back think wenger will move him back into the central striking role?

  135. Ormer

Dunno mate, ’twas in the paper the other day and irrespective of the truth, it has been winding the office Tiny Tot up something chronic. Mind you, it has to be delivered in full ‘Pub Landlord’ mode to be effective.

    YW

  136. delano,

I think RvP will be moved to the center with Chamakh playing on the wing..

  137. Limpar

It pisses me off hearing such stupid comments from that fat useless prick of a manager.

Anyway, he is only making such comments because the reputation of the old guard managers is under threat. He validates with his comments as to why his teams play so brutally and lack any footballing ambitions by saying he is use to much way worse intentional fouling.

Its why the old age pensioner pundits are still so behind, and certain managers. Whats worse is these ex footballers spread their shite knowledge of how to play football everyday to young kids. It is why England’s best players over the last 10 years have been diving, leg cruncher Gerrard, cheating wanker Terry who nobody likes, and Rooney another consistent diving bully who gets away with murder.

Times are changing, and already the England players who were meant to be AMAZING were shown up so horribly at the World Cup. Still the bubble is not burst, and idiots like Hansen and Allardyce still reckon a hard tackle and bullying teams off the park is football!

  138. YW,

    Ormer is right..

    Stats from soccerpunter.com

    Arsenal [2:2] Bayern Munich
    3′ 1:0 Thierry Henry
    55′ 2:0 Nwankwo Kanu
    56′ 2:1 Michael Tarnat
    66′ 2:2 Mehmet Scholl

  139. The result is from the 2000-01 season.

  141. if I remember rightly, we were down to 10 when they came back though…

Can’t remember who got sent off though…

  142. Chris:

Allardyce and Wenger are both doing the same thing. Trying to give their team the best chance to win. We all agree that football the way we play it is much better then Blackburn. I do not blame Fat Sam at all for what he does because it is the only realistic chance he has against a team like Arsenal. Short of telling his players to deliberately injure the other teams players, Fat Sam has to do whatever he can get by with to help his team.

The ones who deserve the blame are the FA and the people who are failing to enforce the rules of the game. They should start with much longer suspension for tackles that are clearly dangerous and there should be retrospective punishment based on video evidence if the ref misses things during the course of the game.

  143. Anagram of Sam Allardyce

    “Alarm Cads Lye”

  144. “Fat Sam has to do whatever he can…”

That’s not how people reacted up in Newcastle.

  145. In eight months at Newcastle, he signed a rash of players for a total of £26M, then the chairman scarpered, for some bizarre reason, and he got the sack.

My heart bleeds for the fat ****.

  146. See I don’t agree that the only way teams like Blackburn can compete with the likes of Arsenal is to kick them. The way to compete is to play better, use superior tactics, show more passion.

Why shouldn’t these teams aim to be better? They’ve been kicking Arsenal for so long, they’ve taken the occassional point but the distance in quality between the sides remains the same.

  147. Fat Sam is a very limited manager. Even when he had players like Jay-Jay Okocha all he wanted was to stop the other team playing football by any means he deemed necessary.

  148. Another day, another average result from Arsenal. Let’s face it Portuguese teams regularly get hammered in england, they don’t travel well, Braga came from nowhere with zero CL experience, the ball fell nicely for Arsenal, there was a lot of luck involved in at least 4 of the goals, and the other two were Braga keeper mistakes, a few bad Arsenal fouls went unpunished by the ref, Wilshere is very small and not big enough to really make an impact on the big stage, Clichy made horrendous mistakes which went unpunished, Fabregas was given too much room which would never happen in the world’s best league (EPL), the Arsenal back two were not tested with a big, fast centre forward, Rooney would have scored on his own against these guys, 6-0 is not a particularly big score.

If this is the best Arsenal can do I think they’ll be found wanting when the men come to play.

It’s so easy to make stuff up … !

  149. That Mueller goal was incredible.

  150. Blackburn don’t try to kick Chelsea or Man Utd. They dont try to kick every team in the league. They try to kick Arsenal because they’re trying to take advantage of the widespread, widely held notion that Arsenal being full of foreign players are thus a soft touch. They feel that the tactics succeed.

  151. ZP

I bet you just copy & pasted that from some daily rag. :-)

  152. Ole:

I certainly do not want to get into an argument about Fat Sam. I agree completely with your comment @ 3:54. The point I was trying to make is that football managers and football players will try to take every advantage that they can get. Same in any sport thru all of history. The ones to blame are the people who are supposed to make and enforce the rules. We can complain and make fun of Fat Sam all we want but there will always be teams like Blackburn and managers like Fat Sam until the FA cracks down on the back tackles.

  153. Henristic @ 3:09: Agreed. We are far, very far from May 2011. Not yet time to say “I-told-you-so” but maybe those AAA blogs and fans, who are nearly orgasmic about last night’s performance would at least have the decency to say, I apologize for the vitriol and pledge to be more support of Wenger even when I am critical.

  154. Yeah, sorry about the Allerdyce bit, Chris… shouldn’t have posted that. Today is a day of celebration. No need to suffer fools at all.

Can’t wait for Sunderland… Come on Brucie, give it a go!

Wonderful news about Lee Cattermole being suspended (cheers, Matt). We can rest easy for a while… he is a walking (sliding) disaster zone and he will eventually, sadly, inevitably break someone’s leg.

Not trying to influence the whole of football when I say that… just saying. He’s an aggy little prick.

Imagine, if Le Grove had their way… we’d have him and Gary Cahill both… wowzer. Talk about lack of football brain…

  155. Hello, Bill. How about that cleansheet last night, eh? That was really something, right?

  156. I watched the game in a fairly packed pub … but I’m sure I heard a sarcastic “I bet Arsene didn’t see that” type comment early on – not sure what it was about, but it reminded me that i really dislike ITV foortball coverage!

  157. Ormer – There was a comment like that, I can’t remember either though what it was reference to.

  158. As fantastic as the attacking football was last night, the thing that I was most excited about was the attacking defense shown by our back four. All of them were first to the ball and they contested the ball as it arrived to feet. It was great to see each of them arriving at the same instant as the ball, with intent, and the others shifting to cover. So good to see. Clichy still contrived to be overly cute on two occasions, and may have payed dearly against another team but at least this time someone was actually covering him. Clearly there is still some work to be done on the communication – hey they’re still getting used to each other, but they are already far more stable than last year. No yelling at each other, no panicky looks, no frustration from Sagna, no nervous looks for his support from Clichy or Vermaelen…oh and no panic at the high ball!!!! Lovely stuff. Much as I loved the attacking football, I was so much more comfortable than I have been these last couple of years on European nights. No nerves for me. I’m not saying they are the finished article but it was so much better…and I think it’s rubbing off on Almunia. Did you see him snatch that low cross out of the air? You don’t do that if the panic has set in.

They are making each other better…want to know my number one indication that things are very different in the defense? Think how much we’ve seen of Song in the attacking moves. He’s suddenly floating around the opposing box and is now being a big part of the passing moves as we move forward, not just the switch of play. How many runs have we seen from Song into the box, including the scoring run? And this is against teams we know are designed to attack on the counter. Yeah, things are different.

  159. Song could easily have had a yellow card before he eventually got one.

He is an absolute master at winning the ball off someone without touching them… but when he wants to, he just knocks them over.

  160. I like Kos’s style of marking. He really gets close and gives his man a hard time on the ball harrying all the time.

  161. Song was good last night. He broke up possible break aways by Braga all night. If he could not get the ball, he would just comitt a niggly foul to break the play up so we could get ourselves organised. This is the type of thing we having been missing in seasons past.

  162. Bill,

I think it’s normal for teams to resort to anything with a view to winning.

That’s why I think the tackling issue is as much about referees as it’s about bad tackles.

We can’t legislate away bad tackles. We just want referees to do their jobs and punish culprits.

  163. “Maria Vela is growing on me, Our new super sub.”

“Has anyone noticed how our players (Vela in particular) play with a massive smile on their face the whole time? I love that.”

“It was also nice to see Vela getting some time in the CF role, dropping back to lay off passes while still making those perfectly timed runs, resulting in a brace for the dreamy little mexican. Lovely stuff.”

    Back off guys!!! LOOOOOL

  164. It’s not as if you can compare Braga to Glasgow Rangers superbly marshalled defense, with players literally throwing their bodies on the line every time the dangerous Fletcher received a telling pass from Rooney, or the sublime Giggs tribbled three players only to be thwarted at the last by a lucky Rangers foot. Brave and bold as always, Rooney was mesmerising in passion and passing, always plucky and sturdy on the ball, and so desperately unlucky not to make the breakthrough he and his team deserved. It was only a matter of time before the might and verve of Manchester broke the stalwart defense of Rangers, under-rated and easily the match of some of the so-called best in Europe. The ref blew early, a mere 6 minutes of added time (to the disbelief even of neutrals) and so robbed Old Trafford of yet another thrilling win. The brave men of Manchester do not talk about their fallen comrade Valencia. That is for lesser sides. After the match, Ferguson, suave and assured as always did not make excuses for a match his boys might – on another day – have won 6-0. Such is the pride and glory of Manchester, England. Will one see a a braver, more skillful band of brothers in this lifetime?

  165. lets not get over excited about the defence for gods sake their attackers werent exactly brilliant were they, that chance they had early on a team of real quality would have scored, had they done that you wouldnt say the defence was good would you.

  166. I agree the Muller goal was the only one of Arsenal quality last night.

  167. Great post, axis. Long may it continue.

  168. Shut it Zap!!

  169. I will only be impressed if we can pull off a victory on saturday

  170. Ole Gunner @ 4.16, last season blackburn were unbeaten against the so called top 4, & i saw all those matches, they were extremely physical & their startegy was typical of their long ball play.

  171. you think they care, if you are impressed, Zap??

  172. Limpar @ 4:16:

Last night was awesome. Both ends of the pitch. Great stuff.

    Ole @ 4:16:

Agreed. Referees and the FA both need to get involved in doing the right thing. I do not blame the refs as much because of the speed of the game and the difficulty in seeing everything. I have incredible respect for the baseball umpires I have watched here all my life. Now that we have strike zone trackers and multiangle video replays we are seeing just how often these excellent officials are wrong. Does not mean they are not trying, they just have a very tough job. I tend to feel the same way about football referees. May a little naive I guess but I try to give the benefit of the doubt.

  173. Zim, you are a funny man these days…keep it coming :D

  174. Agree with all those observations, axis.

Clichy for me was fantastic. Back to his best. Showed great positional sense defensively, and defended and harried high up the picth and won us lots of possession doing it. The guy sitting next to me commented that if he took freekicks and corners the pundits would forget about Bale in an instant and have a new golden boy leftback. Couldn’t agree more.

The mistakes you mention I would argue all day long are an occupational hazard of being an Arsenal fullback. There is no such thing as a defensive line that can be both entirely made up of Robert Huths – and also be a potent attacking force, and effectively support the midfield. Bill will have you believe otherwise but he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about (sorry, Bill – but that’s true). (I know you know this, axis… I’m just making a wider point).

The nature of our attacking 4-3-3 (4-2-1-2-1… whatever) means that our defensive line will sometimes be precarious… sometimes we’ll have two against two… it happens a lot actually. We’ll look volatile, and Bill will soil his pants… but then Kos and Verm and Squilly and Clichy and Song and all the rest will come charging back to save the day… just as quickly as they go charging up the other end to score their incredible goals…

  175. mj_gunner,

Yes they were. I don’t quite get what you mean. I suppose it’s to say that long ball tactics and physical play works.

I don’t think though that they kick Man Utd or Chelsea. I saw those games. They fouled less against those sides than they fouled against Arsenal for a start.

  176. Easy Zap…This unit is a month old. You may say they aren’t any good but all I was trying to get across was that they are showing the style of defense I personally like…proactive, moving forward, moving to the ball rather than falling back and shielding…

    Thanks Fun…

  177. If, and it is a big if, Arsenal somehow manage a lucky win on Saturday, no doubt with connivance of an intimidated ref, I will concede that their team might have an outside chance to finish in this year’s big six, perhaps alongside Villa. Sunderland are complete rubbish anyway.

  178. Not only are they great players, many of them actually comes across as decent, well educated)well chamakh and Arsh has a ba i think), smart young men. Non of them strikes you as a Rooney type of guy . And non as a Terry.

The reason people like barca is beacause in adittion to playing good footy , the players seems like nice guys.

The same is happening to Arsenal. They play good football and they are the good guys.

Guys like Theo and Cesc are just so much more likable than guys like Rooney and Terry. Who would you rather have as your son in law? Who would you trust most? WHo has the most integrity?

OMG we gonna rule the world. Barca is falling off the trone and we will take over!

  179. Tomáš Rosický would’ve been proud of that Thomas Müller goal.

    What’s that?
A well rested TR7 revved up and ready for the upcoming PL game?

Cool! I wonder who’ll get the chance to play with the maestro? Fabby? I guess he might play.
    Damn, this squad is good.

  181. @Chris – you have a very valid point about accomodating RVP & Chamakhattack in the same line up. On top of that we have Bendy waiting all the time on the sidelines. Not sure how he’ll react to the situation & how the boss will be able to keep him happy..

  182. I agree completely Limpar…I’m not on Clichy’s case too much…we play out from the back and he’s supposed to look for that opportunity. Sometimes he scares me with a loose move when pressure is mounting…but that’s what we are about and if the others are protecting him as they should then we’re working our defense they way it should.

Clichy is an absolute terror…really the prime example of what I mean when I say ‘defending moving forward’. So quick to cut out the pass and covert the move to attack. Ruthless.

  183. I can’t bring myself to read anything negative about the game because I don’t want to come down just yet.

Most memorable points of last night’s performance for me:

    - The third goal. Arshavin’s flick to Chamakh was sick. Chamakh’s close control and pass to Wilshere showed he’s on the same wave-length. Wilshere’s backheel, trap pass was just insane.

    - Emmanuel Eboue. I don’t know of too many RB’s that can be found linking up with strikers and creative midfielders with such ease. I think Eboue is a great example of our depth and how incredibly skilled our players are.

    - Cesc Fabregas. The Best.

  184. Ohhhh… this was was cool.

    Holy Jumping Jairzinho’s!
Dilshan might well be onto something here.

  185. mj gunner you can shut up u idiot was I talking to you.

  186. not really agree with you Ole, but in any case, they were shown the door this time!

  187. The best part of the night was Eboue’s crazy warm up.

  189. The Barca players look like what my nephew calls Slap faces.

Xavi looks like a cnut. Messi looks inbred. Alvez looks so arrogant.

But to be fair they are extremely humble the Barca players. You dont see any of the oversized swagger you get from the England stars for example

  190. Absolutely brilliant stuff, ZP. Posts of the Day!

  191. And all a perfect description of him YW

  192. Ateeb:

“It’s ill advised to judge a player so early on, but Jack was amazing last night. It’s about time, he’s been around a while.”

No? How about Nasri’s goal against Porto? If you’re going to praise jackie for his performance against a team like Braga then you must give Nasri his due as well, init?

  193. goonerandy i saw that too, that cracked me up hehehh,…

  194. Jairzinho: Not an orthodox right whinger.
    (not the best rez).

    -

There is no doubt about Ole’s observations.
They don’t ‘kick’ the other teams.
Anyone who can endure watching those games, and not fall asleep, I dare you! I tried it last season (never again!), and even though I eventually ran out of matchsticks, there can be no doubt about the tedious truth here.

  195. “The best part of the night was Eboue’s crazy warm up.”

    The black Cossack.

    I love Eboue.

  196. Limpar @ 4:41:

“We’ll look volatile, and Bill will soil his pants…”

Your right today is not the day to argue. However, I would observe that we did attack brilliantly without resorting to tactics that cause soiling of the pants. We can and probably always could have attacked very well and very effectively without losing our shape. Its certainly not time to declare victory just yet but will admit that so far improvements seem to be more then just optical illusions. Away at Sunderland and upcoming away at Chelsea will be big tests.

  197. axis im not saying they arent good at all, i am just encouraging people in general not to get too overexcited about a win, cause from past experiences, it only makes it more depressing when we suffer a downfall after wards. Like last time we went to sunderland. So, this game is vital and its 10 times more important, and harder, than last night. Lets see what wenger does, because as fans we can only support the team, so cmon arsenal!!

  198. Jesus! Talkshite are praising Arsenal, calling their performance last night ‘amazing’.

  199. FG, that is some news!!

  200. So Dumbo on Le Goofs insinuating that Wenger picked Wilshere over Denilson and that Wenger trusts Wilshere more, also asks if this is a sign the pecking order has shifted?

No Dumbo, it’s called team management. We have a manager (who is smart enough by the way) to pick the right team for the right game. Denilson has his games, and Wilshere will have his.

Come on Dumbo, it’s so clear, a cave man can figure it out.

  201. Zap, if that’s how you feel, so be it. But for some of us, revelling in, and then afterwards remembering the good times, is what gets us through the bad times. So I see no reason to temper my excitement about and pleasure in a wonderful night of football. It was less than 24 hours ago, after all. When the bad results or performances come along, I will be sad, but until then, I will be happy.

  202. Fat Sam – just one letter away from being a cult figure.

  203. Hello all

    was blown away last night.

one of the most dominant performances I have seen.

Braga, from my memory, did not string together more than 6 or 7 passes the entire game. They closed down extremely well, and covered very well for each other. The most obvious incident was when Nasri tracked back and covered for Sagna out wide.

  204. It is so brilliantly clear to see how much we’ve improved, plus I thought Almunia was excellent last night. I am really starting to feel confident in him, but my suspicion is its not him thats changing, its the back 4 in front of him thats improving greatly. Which looks like i;ve contradicted my self but I havent..because i never said the defence is bad i said its still early doors

  205. Jackie Wilshere has this to say about Fabregas:

“It is perfect playing with Cesc and Alex [Song] in midfield. Playing with people like Cesc Fábregas makes it easy for you. He will talk to you and talk you through games. You saw what Cesc could do against Braga – it is perfect for me to learn from him.”

  206. G4E

They see what they want to see over at Le-Grove. I was surprised by the selection a bit but i wouldnt be surprised if we see denilson at sunderland. but wilshere did show good positional sense to never leave the midfield too exposed, partnering song well to give fabregas freedom. as YW said in the post..

  207. for Sunderland-

    Aluminium

    Bacary Seb Laurent Gael

    Alex Neves

    Francesc

    Thomas Andre
    Mouruane

Subs – Carlos, His Highnesss, Samir, Jacky, Keiran, Jonathan

  208. Its almunia, mj gunner, you idiot.

  209. @ mj_gunner

    that lineup looks very likely.

  210. NJ,

I agree, and I like the fact the Wilshere fulfills his defensive duties as he does his attacking duties. He’s not afraid to tackle and throw himself about and I love that.

But there will be games that Wilshere will not work at least not at this age.

  211. G4E, seems like a stupid comment by whoever that idiot is. What will he say when Denilson starts against Sunderland?

  212. What’s up with you today, Zap?

  213. I really hope denilson and song show their strength and, from the outset play a little dirty,,dirty isnt the word..hard is……cattermole is suspended isnt he, that will be a miss for them, so now they dont have a good DM so we can exploit that position even more as if we wouldnt anyway.

God i love talking about Arsenal, it really removes the stress of the day

  214. Allardyce has really outdone himself this time.

Does the fact that we have had a number of players suffering career-threatening injuries not show why AW says what he does. We have also had a number of dirty fouls to deal with (some from Fat Sam’s teams) with Diaby being the latest victim.

Anyway, doesn’t any manager do the same. Fat Sam’s mate Ferguson surely does this more than anyone else.

    Allardyce is a cnut.

  215. Fat Sam is late with his comments as well. He should have made them before the match, not nearly two weeks afterwards. Numpty.

  216. Wicked avatar, G4E!

  217. Fun,

That just makes him retarded in more ways than one.

  218. G4E

perhaps the trip to Stamford Bridge will be one of those moments for wilshere. but as you said, he’s willing to aggressively pursue the ball in the open midfield. and i love that too.

    we shall see

  219. Bill, nope. You just didn’t notice because they didn’t score. Our defensive ‘shape’ was like the shimmering semi-permeable membrane of a beautiful rare jellyfish… just like it always is. Vulnerable whilst mating, but with a nasty bite to bail it out of trouble.

  220. LA

Getting ready to “Chip” Dumbo at Le Goofers

  221. record breaking. I think not. try 7-0

  222. try 13-0 would that make u happy

  223. right zap, I am going to ignore everything you throw today, doesn’t seem you’ve had a good day

  224. This song is dedicated to you…You know who you are.

  225. Henristic @ 3:09PM

The voice of AKB reason and still my hero. If you are not, you should have been a diplomat. Cheers.

  226. Great thoughts all round about the game.

I’m on the official ‘Howler’ Watch – All in support of Manuel Almunia.

While we all hope that his stellar performances continue to be consistent, I want to go out of my way to point out that Almunia does not hold the monopoly on goal keeping howlers.

Here’s the current Sone Cold Howler league table:

    1. Pepe Reina – 4 known shocking mistakes, 2 that lead to goals (against Arsenal and Argentina)
    2. Joe Hart – spectacular fumbles for England and Man City, one which lead to a goal
    3. Petr Cech – howler last night that led to a goal against Chelsea
    4. Manuel Almunia – 0 howlers so far and solid performances all round.

As for VDS – 5 goals given away with 4 of them in extra time – doesn’t exactly breed confidence, does it?

The most important thing is that the Arsenal team trust Almunia and play for him.

  227. ok mj you do that

  228. I thought Almunia was great last night…he came out the few times he had to but overall it looks like he’s more comfortable with this new back four in front of him.

  229. nicely done by guess who -

‘I completely deny that my team deliberately injures players, certainly not. In the Premier League the commitment and speed unfortunately brings players together at such pace that it’s almost impossible to avoid injuries.’

  230. Fabulous team performance last night eclipsed by Eboue`s warm up

  231. Limpar @ 5:50PM:

As always your analogies are classics. You are true ACLF treasure. If the rest of the world was exposed the way we are you would quickly be enshrined on Mt Olympus.

  232. I didn’t claim Nasri is a bad player. Rather I, like many others had higher expectations from him. He isn’t that dangerous while attacking, as one would like him to be. He is a good passer, but hardly ever makes a dangerous pass that leads to a goal. It’s just been 2 season that he’s been with us, obviously he will improve, like Song, Diaby, and Denilson seem to have improved. He however, to me atleast, is the same player we got two seasons ago. Good player, but nothing extraordinary so far. Frankly, I had more expectations of him than let’s say Diaby, Theo or Vela.

He can hold onto the ball, sure, but so can many other players in the team. He is an attacking player, and I would like to see him add more to the attacking play, rather than get to the byline, and pass backwards. Perhaps he tried to play it too safe.

My initial comment, was based on just last night’s performance. Rather on the performance of the last 2 seasons.

Hleb, was a unique player, one of the best with the ball. Not a goal scorere, but really really dangerous in the attacking play.We don’t have a dribbler like him, Diaby being the closest. For now, Nasri, isn’t a better player than him. But he will be with more experience, I hope.

  233. *wasn’t based

  234. “No Dumbo, it’s called team management. We have a manager (who is smart enough by the way) to pick the right team for the right game. Denilson has his games, and Wilshere will have his.”

That is just typical! Denilson is just coming back from injury, did not play in pre-season and has not really played since April, so of course he is going to be reintroduced gradually. JW is 18, he will not play every game and we all know how young players can have a great game followed by an average one. Arsene will know when it’s time for him to step down so he’s not overplayed or his confidence knocked if he goes through a dip in form. The point of a squad is to have a variety of options for different occasions. They are the first to complain about lack of depth and then immediately expect their favourites to be replacing rather than supplementing other players. They’re probably the same people who were saying we should sell Vela and Walcott!

  235. @ axis and DS

Agree, Almunia has done us and himself proud so far. Please stay fit, Al!

Did I hear a big cheer when his name was read out at the start? Could someone who was there confirm that?

  236. Hleb must have regressed, having spent a large chunk of the last two years sat upon his Arsenal.

  237. I guess we shall see how he does at Satan FC.
How far the mighty have fallen.

  238. Passenal,

They’ve been complaining that theo is highly overpaid, because he’s half a player that his salary depicts.

    Fb,

Hahaha. Poor Hleb, he has been regretting his decision to leave for 2 years now. Every year, he makes the same comments. He has no one to blame but himself. From playing in one of the best midfield in 2008, to sitting on the bench for the next 2 years. Must suck to be him.

  239. God, this is killing me! I haven’t seen the match yet, it’s waiting on the DVR, and I won’t until tomorrow! After reading the effusive praise of the squad on ACLF all day I will have to make sure I take a muscle relaxer or something before sitting down with my pints to watch the recording.

I think Wenger will rest who he can (realistically only Fabregas, Arshavin, and Wilshire I would think). I don’t see Fabregas starting this weekend as it would be three matches in a week not counting the friendly with Spain prior to that. I am expecting the following lineup
    Almunia
    Sagna – Squilacci – Koscielny – Clichy
    Song – Denilson
    Nasri
    Eboue- Chamakh – Rosicky

  240. What a display.

Zap, we are defending well, lets rejoice about it.

Ateeb, I for one think that Nasri will meet all expectations. Injuries have slowed him down.

Hleb must really have a sour taste in his mouth, I mean he was so arrogant when he left Arsenal.

He was a player that I liked a lot but he behaved like a real punky brewster!

  241. I still cannot believe Hleb ended up there.
    Of all places.

    -

I’m off to bore myself to death by watching Liverpool. For a bit. Not sure if I’ll last very long.
If Reina throws the ball into his net, again, (instead of missing a back-pass)
I’ll add it to the log.

  242. Sorry- I meant ‘what’s left of Liverpool’ FC.

  243. I still remember going red with rage when I saw Hleb’s first pictures in a Barca shirt. That freakish smile. You think he would have kept that picture in his collection anymore? I doubt it.

  244. Hleb will get a different reception to Eduardo when he returns to TNHOF. Not a bad one I imagine, but nothing special either.

Rosicky is still here, and hopefully, has recovered from a condition that seems to have ended Hargreaves’ career.
    Luckily for us.
Props to the medical team. Big time.

  245. Finsbury, I still hate the fact that Eduardo is not here.

    What a player!!

  246. I really don’t know the fuss about us coming up against tougher opposition. If I remember correctly, apart from last season, we had been beating the teams of the big 4 for many years. We used to have more problems beating the small teams, which has been rectified.

I wish I was that hard working, to come up with the big 4 teams table for the last few years.

We used to have really good posters with interest in stats. Isn’t JBH still around?

  247. Liverpool 1-1 Bucherest.

I guess, SB are just a poor team.

  248. absolutely spot on in your first para Ateeb; even I fail to understand people grumbling about our failure to beat ‘big’ teams, apart from the last season. People seem to blindly follow what plundits make of us. I dont have the stats but i know that in -

    06-07 Double over Manure
    07-08 Double over Chelski
    09-10 Double over Pool

  249. wow, is it true that liverpool want to sell anfield and move into a smaller stadium due to their dept?

Just heard the commentator say that.

  250. Ateeb and MJ: Our record against the ManU and Chelsea the last 5 years is 5 – 16 – 5

  251. When out team is “mostly” healthy we can play with any team.

Injuries for the most part have killed us against the bigger clubs.

  252. Paul N

Vela is getting a chance, so, it’s not all d**m and gloom.
    :)

Eduardo didn’t play in the CL this week, not sure why, but hopefully he’ll have some form and a chance to impress on his return.

  253. Finsbury, I agree, that was in respone to Bill about our record agaisnt United and Chelsea.

I saw the silver lining regarding our current injuries from the beginning.

    A blessing in disguise.

  254. I am sure we had some clowns saying we shouldve sold Vela, just like Song, Diaby, Walcott and Denilson.

Some really silly people support Arsenal!

  255. Paul: This year does have a different feel so far. By this time last year we had dropped the game at Old Trafford with those 2 stupid goals and then we got stuffed on the break by City. Hopefully the good start will translate into better play in against those teams this year.

    Finsbury:

Hope Eduardo has a great year, just not against us. He will get a huge positive response from the fans I would guess.

  256. For real Bill, that United game was a killer. It made no sense at all, did it?

I agree, there is a maturity about the team. I do believe we will see a better showing against the bigger clubs.

  257. its a strange feeling watching liverpool slowly drop out of the elite clubs and becoming a very, very average side. I don’t even think they’ll finish in the top 7.

This is my prediction for top 4.
    1.Arsenal
    2.Chelsea
3.Man U (I dont know about the order but these will be the top 3, just did it alphabetically to make it look better *more realistic* better…)
    4. Man Shitty

Oh and one more thing, you know someone rarely scores when his celebration is sucking his thumb for a minute and a half (Lucas just now)…

  258. Just remembered Tevez often does that..but its not an annoying celebration, not like those annoying shrimpy celebrations kalou and anelka do with that hand by their chest bird like celebrations..all started by kamara who did that hand by ear thing, theres nothing worse then being scored against and the scorer happens to be kalou, kamara or malouda ffs..

  259. Worst goal celebration ever is Robbie Hammerhead Keane.

  260. Ateeb:

I disagree. We play a pass and move style. For that style of play he fits in perfectly, in my opinion, precisely because he can retain possession and knows how to link up well with his team mates. Where I do agree with you is in my desire for him to grab the game by the scruff of the neck and make it his own like against Porto.

My initial comment, was based on just last night’s performance. Rather on the performance of the last 2 seasons.

He just came back from a month out. I think it’s a bit unfair to jump to all of your conclusions considering that he is a bit rusty.

Hleb, was a unique player, one of the best with the ball. Not a goal scorere, but really really dangerous in the attacking play.We don’t have a dribbler like him, Diaby being the closest. For now, Nasri, isn’t a better player than him. But he will be with more experience, I hope.

I think Nasri adds more to the team than Hleb did. Hleb couldn’t be counted on to receive a pass, beat a couple of defenders and score. Nasri does this regularly on top of other things which he does well. As far as his development is concerned, I think he’s doing well. He comes back each new season with a new tweak tro his game that is really fun to watch. Hopefully this year he’ll turn into a game winner.

  261. Finsbury:

“Rosicky is still here, and hopefully, has recovered from a condition that seems to have ended Hargreaves’ career.
    Luckily for us.
Props to the medical team. Big time.”

Owen Hargreaves cost United £17m pounds and has played but a handful of games. He’ll be thirty next season as well. Something for the splash the cash brigade to think about.

  262. Paul N

Whoops, I should’ve made my reply out to your comment at 8:15

    “what a player!”

    G69

Agree about the ca$h, but he is a good player, and it’s hard to test for that kind of injury I’d imagine (no idea!). It is unlucky.

  263. got you Finsbury!!!

  264. “whole” that is

  265. I must apologise to Zap. That was rude of me. Blame on my Arsenal infused high.

    Doomer-free heaven

  267. Funny how after Fabregas has proved he has not lost the desire to play for Arsenal which is contrary to what the hacks were predicting. this morning a campaign of Barcelona crap was launched in a bid to destabilise him once again except this time it coming from the British media they seem so determined to see every good player at Arsenal leave. Well bad news for them. He is getting even better and they will have to put up with him for few more seasons

  268. The ungrateful Owen Coyle is turning on Wenger after failing to charm us into loaning Bolton Jack Wilshere. Hypocrite.

  269. Still on and on the go on about the PL being the besy league with the best players blah blah blah, yet year after year european and world players awards aren’t won by world class players like Rooney, Lampard or Terry.

    Complete toss.

The biggest insult yesterday was that clown comparing our Jack to fat ass hoe cole.

  270. I miss the village idiots. Where is Jaguar? What is Sprectum doing? How is SUGA? I think these three would make the perfect backing vocalist trio for the Wenger Jazz Orchestra. I can see them donning Afro wigs (a must for any self-respecting backing vocalist), and doing a dance routine choreographed by King Eboue. “Doo-be-doo-be-dap-dap-doo-be. I love Arsene and he loves me”
SUGA can be the leader. He already has the shades. Add Alex Ice Cream and we have a quartet! Oh, the harmony of it all.

  271. So here we go again, the attack of British “failed” managers on Wenger because he calls them for who they’re…We all know that the likes of Bolton, Blackburn, etc etc make up the numbers in the Premier League, but at least do it with dignity not with breaking other player’s legs. It’s not our fault you don’t have the money to compete at the top, the same reason we are being accused for not winning trophies. Yet, we still compete at the top and play CL for 13 consecutive years and it’s mostly because we play football and not disguised rugby.

How can any self respecting person, let alone a manager deny the fact that Robinson tackle on Diaby could have broke his leg and it went unpunished, not even a card. I can understand his rant about not getting the foul for his player which was a mere foul not a scything as he said in some reports, but come on Coyle…who’s two faced here?

  272. bradys right foot

Now that the dust has settled I thought the two centre halves were immense today. Kozzer had the type of performance that Tony Adams in his prime would have been proud off.
