There’s Only One Arsene Wenger

Arsenal v Blackpool 3:00pm

Is there any sport quite like football ? So full of opinion. It seems to me that there are two sides of football. The first, so prevalent in this country, is the murdoch media circus, the rumours, the transfers, the caught with their pants down outside a night club at 1am reportage, the lurid sensationalism, the unbelievable player valuations, the so called expertise and the glib punditry. The second, which seems to be almost mutually exclusive, is the actual football itself. The sweat and the tears behind the scenes. The athleticism, the tactics, the technique, the years of sacrifice, the training, the coaching and as Darius showed us yesterday, the preparation, both mental and physical, and the diet. It is in this 2nd domain that Arsene Wenger’s feet are so firmly placed; brilliantly placed.

The biggest joke in the media is the Arsene Wenger quote ‘I didn’t see it’. It’s the biggest joke for me, because it’s on the media, not Wenger. I suspect he has seen more than they ever saw. There are people that you hear about, perhaps know, who are meticulous about attention to detail and preparation. Wenger is one of those. I suspect he knows the height, weight, speed and attributes of all of his squad. He knows, when they play, what ground they can cover, what stamina they have, whether they are underperforming, more so than any “Player Cam” from half a dozen different angles. He backs this up by a raft of statistics. The Castrol Index, the Opta Index. It wouldn’t surprise me if Arsenal employed their own statisticians.

Those of you in the UK will remember a great middle distance british triumvirate of runners. Coe, Ovett and Cram. What has this got to do with it you may ask ? Well, these guys broke world records for fun. They were humble, they were talented, and they competed with a relentless intensity that was matched only by their  training regimes, which I know, were groundbreaking in quality. Coe used innovative techniques in training, running very fast in short bouts and achieving maximum efficiency and quality. Cram used to train at altitude, to improve his stamina. These 3 got me  thinking – did they achieve what they wanted in sport by having a valuation placed on them ? Were they good at what they did because somebody said so and saw  them in you tube ? Were they highly rated because of opinion ? The answer to these questions is no, no and no. They were brilliant because they were talented – accepted,  they had the right mental attitude, because of their training and preparation, their hunger, their desire and their utter ruthlessness and willingness to win. Does anybody see any parallels here ?

To me the parallels are important for two reasons. First, that it is of crucial importance for a player to be hungry, and to be in a frame of mind for competition. Second that it underpins our philosophy on transfers. That is, what attributes should one assess when placing a valuation on a player ? In the case of Arsene Wenger and Arsenal, the attributes are firmly rooted in those that we have discussed. And thank god for that. Not how much they appeared in Hello Magazine, what nightclubs were frequented and the size of the agent’s mouth.

This is why, when I look in the paper, and on twitter, and on the various arsenal forums, and read the various portents of doom, I don’t lose a single second of sleep when I turn in at night. The work at arsenal is being done as we speak. Not just for this season, but for future seasons. The planning has been meticulous, calculated and ruthless. The CEO has stamped his blueprint so carefully that we will see a conveyor belt of quality emerging from Hale End and Colney that will be written about for years to come, a crowning legacy. Wilshere, Gibbs, Eastmond, Frimpong, Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Szezesny will be eventually succeeded by the next crop, and I can already see envious and covetous glances casted in our direction. Ahh… but the doubters say, where are the trophies ? Well – let’s wait and see. And let’s remind the doubters that this project is already a success; arsenal have climbed to the next level in the last 14 years. Of that there is no doubt. No statistician in the land will tell me that we are not now amongst the top 10 in europe, and top 4 domestically, and have been the last 5 years, if not longer. Let us celebrate that achievement alone.

Not much news on transfers. Fulham are still digging in their heels on Schwarzer. Holding out for more than 2m. The bid is still on the table for Sébastien Squillaci. Several media outlets were reporting that this is closer to completion, but this was denied by Wenger. The Ajax goalkeeper is rumoured to be the next option if Schwarzer fails to materialise. The last piece of speculation is a return for Matthew Upson.

To the game then. Newly promoted blackpool made a sensational start in  the premiership, winning 4-0 at Wigan. This is not a team to be taken likely. Many minnows have come to the emirates or highbury to frustrate, so there is no room for complacency. Given the absence of Nasri, the stand out player in pre season, other players will have to step in and provide attacking cohesion. Hopefully Cesc, Chamakh and Rosicky. A quick team prediction:

Almunia, Sagna, Djourou, Vermaelen,Clichy, Song, Cesc, Wilshere, Rosicky, Chamakh, VP

Subs: Fabianski, Gibbs, Eastmond, Eboue, Lansbury, Arshavin, Walcott

Match prediction : 3-1

Enjoy the game, wherever you are.

  1. Morning

  2. While you kept 11 players, no left back is interesting;)

  3. I think you forgot Clichy in your team line up.

  4. Good morning !

    Corrected ! Thanks Grarse.

  5. Awesome magic…

  6. At last, a sensible view of our club.

Reading the blogs around Arsenal yesterday I could have been forgiven for thinking Arsenal were doomed to the Championship and Arsene Wenger was the antichrist… thank God for a little sanity at last..

  7. Great post up until the team prediction – no left back in favour of an extra forward is really quite radical

  8. a fungus-coated right hand

How about replacing Lansbury with Fabregas among the reserves in your team?

  9. Cesc is already in the team Fungus.

  10. Hi, just to be pedantic the 2nd runner you refer to should be “Ovett”, not Everett. Cheers.

  11. Muppet. Great writing again! How Yogi thinks he’ll just walk back into the side after this week I do not know.

  12. Ahh.. thanks Charbydis1966 ! Getting mixed up with a female tennis player from that era ! I was looking at that suspiciously as well when I posted it. Will correct.

  13. I was an Ovett man myself, before I even knew Coe was a stinking Tory. Weird think is the record shop in Midsomer Norton was run by an S Coe who was an absolute ringer for Steve Ovett.
It’s true, you couldn’t make it up.

  14. Really Stew ? lol. Not many people looked quite like Ovett !

  15. Oh yes, that would be Chris, quite a tidy blonde as I recall. God I’m old.

  16. “I would rather be prepared and wrong
than to be unprepared but right!”

I think the above quote would sum up Wenger’s policy the best

  17. Wenger is a perfectionist & has absolutely unshakable belief, a deadly combination to “lose friends and alienate people” In contrast the media and Wenger bashers are neither any good at their work nor have any particularly strong beliefs, cue sparks will fly.
Even for someone like me looking on from outside the UK, its infuriating that these morons bang on about how we have not won a thing for 5 years.
If trophies were be all and end all of football ask Pompey what good the FA Cup has done them.

  18. Good morning Muppet,

    Nice post. A few points:

    1. To compare Coe et al with the current Arsenal team – is wrong. Coe et al delivered records and medals, which is why their brilliance is undisputed. This current team has not delivered. You can of course say, as you do, that they’ve done wonderfully well being a top 4 team. And that certainly is a big deal financially for CL qualification is big money and a relative mark of consistency. But is being 3rd/4th the ultimate benchmark that either Wenger or the team have to be judged by? No our standards are much higher.
    2. As for the “hunger” element. Well, I for one, profoundly disagree. I have watched Arshavin literally walk through games. I have watched Theo & Diaby not bother tracking back. I have watched a collective laziness in closing teams down to press the ball. While I accept that many players have been injured during our spectacular capitulation and powder puff contestation of the league last season, much of the problem has to do with the mental fragility, utter complacency by some of the players and the stubbornness/inability of the coach to address the problem.

You can stand in front of the mirror all you want and say “mirror mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful of them all?” – but at the end of the day, there’s no cigar for 3rd/4th.

  19. Another insightful post. There is a theme developing through these guest posts, one that identifies the lack of sensible media appreciation of the best stories in football.

Not the ‘Hello’ sensationalism when footballers get High Court injunctions to prevent people seeing the (even) seedier sides of their lives and Milner, heaven help us, is ‘worth’ £26 Million but the application, hard work, intelligence and sheer bloody genius of Arsene Wenger and this Club called Arsenal.

There’s the story. Now go and cover it. Hello, anybody listening?

  20. Muppet

Your article is a good armour to fortify our belief in the manager, team and all that make Arsenal tick.

  21. Coe Ovett and Cram are remembered for their titles, not the reasons for their titles. That’s why you didn’t mention Peter Elliot of the same generation. Just as prepared, hard working and tough competitor, but not as “winning”.
This great ground work being done is all moot if we do not become competitive at the top level.

Diaby, Arshavin, Denilson, Eboue, Nasri, Song, djourou, Walcott. Are they stone cold winners? I have my doubts. Talented yes, but ruthless winners?

I would only put Verm, Cesc, RVP

  22. great post, glad to see a an arsenal fan in the heart

  23. Sorry….

I would only put Verm, Cesc, RVP and the player now at Spurs in that Ruthless winning category. I believe that’s our biggest problem

  24. All you write there about the preparation etc just doesnt sell papers im afraid so you rarely see stories on such things going on at ANY club. Red tops and even tabloids these days sell their rags with celebrity and scandal – just a sad fact of todays media.

Blavkpool today – anyone find it odd that they have 2 away games in their first 2 matches in the league? Hardly fait IMO.

Fulham wont sell Schwarzer until they have a replacement lined up – which is fair enough i suppose. I do find it funny that Mark hughes has lost his memory however – accusing Wenger of unsettling Schwarzer (Wenger hasnt spoke about Schwarzer once) – i seem to recall him endlessly speaking about Lescott!!

    My Team –

    Almunia
    Sagna, Djourou, Vermaelen,Clichy
    Song
    Rosicky Diaby
    VanP Chamakh Theo

  25. Good article – if you (plural) haven’t, you should read ‘Moneyball – the art of winning an unfair game’, which elaborates on these principles rather nicely.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moneyball

It’s a book which has changed the shape of many sports (it’s set in the world of baseball) and has had undoubted impact on Wenger’s philosophies and approach to the way he chooses players and sculpts his teams.

  26. Good points Joe.

To answer them I would say first of all that the metaphor for Coe, Ovett and Cram is saying mostly that football is about sport, not sensationalism or opinion. It is not supposed to be a direct comparison of success. Of course, we are currently lacking with trophies, but it is important to keep our feet on the ground.

Secondly, it is true that one can point out individuals who have not showed hunger. This is not though a reason for not seeking the right players to develop or to buy, that is, having the right kind of attributes. We all get frustrated when individuals fall short, and you have to concede that sometimes it is merely a lack of match fitness, form, or return from a heavy international schedule, as in the case of Arshavin last week.

As for the stubborness of Wenger, this is his strength, not his weakness. I’m surprised that a man of your intelligence cannot see this.

  27. Desie – Blackpool are having work on their ground so it’s by design they’re playing a bunch of away games at the start of the season. Funnily enough, I think they’ll benefit from it.

  28. So, as Chelsea won nothing the season before last then their squad became failures over night. Total utter failures along with everyone else who didn’t win the prem. But hang on they then won the double the following season so they weren’t total failures. Oh this doomer philosophy is so confusing.

  29. “If trophies were be all and end all of football ask Pompey what good the FA Cup has done them.”

Im sorry but thats just a silly statement – its the moneymen at pompey that killed the club.

And the end game for all that hard work and preparation IS to WIN trophies.

  30. Muppet, I like the article but I, like many fans are dumbfounded our squad isn’t in place yet.

World cup commentating commitments don’t make this easier to swallow!

  31. The mnoneymen killed the club by ‘buying’ the FA Cup, Diese. That did kill the club.

Short term gain for very long term pain. Ask a Pompey fan.

  32. Doh! moneymen!

  33. Diesegooner it is anything but a silly statement. It is precisely the point. Our ‘moneymen’ haven’t killed our club. Financial stability is as important as trophies that’s the absolute point.

  34. Chelsea aren’t failures but the do, more often than not, compete until the conclusion of the competitions their in, barring the UCL of course.

They would never do what we did at Wigan last year….

  35. oh is that right Maq? i wasnt aware – still odd though

  36. Mohamed Zubairu

This article represents my view point about my club. The club’s philosophy also encapsulates my view point of life. Having a system in place that delivers talented player continuously is the greatest asset that a football club can have. It simply means that we can at least sustain our present level of quality over the long haul.
As for the trophies, they will come in quick succession. Wilshire, Gibbs, Frimpong, Lansbury, Afobe, Aneke and co a part of the first fruit of the academy. Many more are on the way. That is why I am excited about Arsenal. Glory days are ahead and I believe they start this season.

  37. I think the Doomers just think there could be more done in terms of today’s squad. It should be in place and settled by now. But my judgement will be reserved utility Sept 1st. I’m just disappointed it’s not done Already

  38. Sorry for my iPhone imposed typos and grammar folks

  39. Yes but arsenal winning the FA cup wont kill us will it? Wenger just doesnt rate it as he should and has practically thrown it in recent years. We won it before and it didnt kill us – we are nowhere near what pompey are – bought the fa cup – erm no i dont think that was the agenda

  40. Thanks Jonny – 8.59

  41. Whats wrong with the telegraph? How do they manage to twist “scoles does not get the credit he deserves” to “manchester uniteds scholes not a fair player says Wenger”.

That is what is worng with the press today. Its amazing how they can turn anyting into bitching….

  42. And thanks for the other comments – off out now.

  43. But look, i applaud the way the club has practically been rebuilt from the ground up – training facilities, youth setup, coaching philosophies, scouting system, move to new stadium – a truly remarkable achievement – no doubt

  44. steww on August 21, 2010
    at 9:06 am

    Amen Stewwart.

  45. Wenger did say he wasnt fair at times – his ‘darker’ side he called it – after he praised him for being one of the best players england had seen and alsi a slight dig at the press for not recognising him for it because he wasnt a ‘media hound’ or something similar – i saw the press conference – but hey why let reporting the full quotes stand in your way when you can select a few to suit your agenda – just look at the spin tribalfootbal site puts on it – ‘wenger launches an amazing attack’ or some such shite

  46. Every time I come on here, everything has already been addressed.

    Good show.

  47. Arsenal have always been financially stable though is my point – to have still kept it that was is great work – but saying an fa cup win by us to what happened to pompey is silly – the fa cup took a step down the priority ladder when it was more winable for this young team than for pompey – just would have been nice is all – to go along with all the rest

  48. Delia-----Block 112

Packed my bag, car ready in the drive , scarfes washed and the new shirt all ready to go.
Only problems on 1st Capitol Connect could possibly ruin my day.
We are the best you Doomers, for sheer entertainment, excitement and exponents of “the beautiful game” look no further than our Arsenal !
Last Sunday was a prime example.
Reinforcements will arrive before the end of the Window and as long as our injuries are manageable this campaign ,we will be holding up silverware at the end of the season. All we need is a little bit of luck!
    COYRs

  49. Nice one Muppet. Looking forward to the game this afternoon.

Not surprised about the different renditions of Arsene’s comments doing the rounds today. Sensationalism sells – these folks will never let the truth get into the way of a good story.

  50. Steww, they didn’t blow a two goal lead, in fact they were never in front. My point wast about losing a game, anyone can lose, it was the position we lost it from.
Stone Cold winners don’t blow 2-0 leads with 20 mins to go against relegation candidates.

  51. Just a thought on Gallas’ move down the road – while most rated Gallas as a player there is no doubt most didnt see him as a true Gooner – i wonder what kind of reception hes get back at the Grove when he turns out for that lot? Will we not care as he was never really one of us? Or will he get a right bollocking due to the pent up frustration he no doubt cause with a lot of fans……hmmmmm

  52. There are some few sensible Arsenal blogs out there. Yours is among them.

  53. Lovely, Delia.

    What a picture you paint.

  54. The article was written by a muppet ! It figures, when the muppet does not realise that all the preparations and “winning” mentality should actually have an end product !

  55. Nice read Muppet. I like your selection but your subs are not right. Eastmond & Lansbury cannot fly from Dublin for the game and then fly back for the Platinum One Challenge tomorrow.

Joe17 who is to say there is no end product. Do you have a crystal ball or read the tea leaves?

  56. Steve Ovett humble? I think your memory is playing tricks on you.

But in the main I agree with about Le Boss. Looking forward to today’s game and you picked the side I would like to see out there, unless we can pick up a goalkeeper before 3 O’clock

  57. Oh thank God people are talking sense somewhere on the internets :D I just came over from Just Arsenal (usually good enough read) but the comments people are leaving …… phew! I feel like throwing a massive fit and getting moderated to hell :D Hehe

It’s all about how Wenger has destroyed our club?? Can you believe that??? :)

  58. I don`t see any reason why Vela shouldn`t be givena a chance. Especially in a match tthat `ll come as asy as against Blackpool. I believe Only one of either RVP and Chamak should be playing in the starting line-up. Wilshire had his chance against Liverpool and he and Hopeless BIG-TIME.

Rosicky should definitely be taking the Creative Role. I don`t think Cesc `ll be rushed in with a certain doubt over his Fitness.

    So here is my Line-up:

    ——————–Almunia,
    Sagna, Djourou, Vermaelen,Clichy,
    ——————–Song,
    ————-Rosicky, ——Diaby
    ——-Eboue——–RVP———–Vela

Subs: Fabianski, Cesc,Gibbs, Eastmond, Arshavin, Walcott,

The biggest problem with your Squad is ..U are trying to make the Squad a lot-English when we all know how bad those ENGLISH Players are.

  59. Flint McCullough

Great stuff Muppet & all the writers this week.

YW will have to keep his level very high to keep you chaps out.

    Mags
No Mags they don’t often but teams without their top 6/7 players after just losing 2 crucial games do.

I certainly remember losing 3-2 to Villa in the pomp of the PV4 DB10 era.

AW knows more about winning than all of us on here & it is often about the right blend clicking into place + a large slice of lady luck, which is often all the difference is.

  60. Eboue moving further and further forward!! Sure he can be a decent attacker at times but hes a right back – leave him attack from there – we have far better attackers

  61. Top post Muppet, great read and i agree with every point youre trying to make.

  62. I tink some of us coment out of context. What hapened 2 chelsea away 2 wigan last season(1-3) after havin takin d lead,3 seasons ago an equalizer in d last seconds dat cost them d title.Like wenger said wining a carlin cup at d expense of a top 4 finish wil b considered a failure even by d so called media.I tink d least we can do is to support dis team in tryin to do sometin special.Enough said.

  63. This article reminds me of a quote:

“When all else fails there’s always delusion”

    (Conan O’Brien)

  64. PeeWee’s comment reminds me of a quote:

“Fuck off PeeWee, you miserable cunt”

    (Mattyboy)

  65. Matty Boy’s comment reminds me of a quote:

    “I agree”

    (Frank)

  66. Homer- Bar Wilshere’s miscontrol that led to the goal, I think he fared pretty well against a top 4 contender. I ca’t believe you would say the boy had his chance and we should move on to starting other’s. How do you expect him to improve?

    Eboue Djourou Verm Clichy

    Song
    Rosicky Wilshere

    Walcott Arshavin
    Cham

Diaby, RVP and Fabregas off the bench to continue the annihilation.

  67. Right. I can’t bear to read the completely hideous anti Arsenal comments from people pretending to be arsenal fans any more. I’m off. Bye.

  68. Excellent Blog – Joe71 is the biggest Muppet

  69. LOL…yeah, but your quotes were shit!

  70. Bit like what fills your head then PeeWee.

  71. The post ironic humour evident on this site today is of a very high standard.

Either the writers are comic geniuses or complete and utter knobs.

  72. CB, I’ll go with the latter. They are utter and complete Knobs. Pessimism afflicts them to no end!!!

  73. These articles by the folks who read ACLF about the preparation involved in a Wenger team are well thought out pieces of writing. To those who say the team ‘is not’ because there have not been any trophies, I respond by saying, “nuts”. Keep it up Muppet!

  74. Joe @ 8:52 am – You are obviously a mature person, not one of those callow doomers from whose writing it is easy to discern they are either teenagers and/or semi-literate lemmings who unthinkingly repeat the b.s. from the tabloid media and blogs like le gloom. Therefore you know better than making that specious response to Muppet. The comparison made between Arsene’s team policy and the mental attitude of Coe, Ovett and Crum was to highlight the importance of attitude and desire and not a comparison of trophies. You should know better; that the measure success in football and athletics is completely different. If trophies were the only measure of success then players like Cruyff, Van Basten, Zico, Socrates et al would be described as failures because they never won a world cup medal. You know better; that if you wished to compare individual successes, then you should have compared Coe/Ovett/Crum’s medals with the trophies won by Arsene Wenger as a manager not only in England but in France and Japan as well. You should know better; that standing on the sidelines and making cavalier assessments of the relative hunger and desire of a team which has made a habit of scoring more late goals than any other team in the EPL last year is a fools game.

You should know better but you won’t because you are obsessed with short term glory and not long-term success. Hence you dishonestly twist and distort Muppet’s worthy comparison to suit your ill-formed view that Arsene and Arsenal have been a failure because they haven’t delivered a trophy in five years. Let me give you a bit of advice my Mama often gave me; those who know better should do better!

  75. I smell a pile of stinking fish carcasses at whose rotten core quivers a little spud whose name is…………. PeeWee!

  76. Well done Muppet. Great great post.

Such an important point you make. I prefer that second aspect of sport myself.

Reputations matter very much, speculation is interesting, but all that is the smaller aspect of what sport is about.

  77. @Verminator

It’s a wonder you can smell anything with your head is so firmly rooted up your arse.

People on this site are f*cking hilarious though. I wonder if any of you actually have the courage to step back and look at the Arsenal squad critically or is it that your so terrified of being turned upon by your buddies here that you join the mob in throwing stones at anyone with a balanced perspective. You amuse me no end!!

  78. @ PeeWee “This article reminds me of a quote:

“When all else fails there’s always delusion”

    (Conan O’Brien)”

    Balanced perspective? You condescending CNUT!!!

Get behind the team or Bugger off. Oh wait you are a spud.

  79. apparently cesc and rvp on the bench but marouane, theo and wilshere start.

  80. It’s damn hard not to condescend people like you 1cool Steve…damn hard.

  81. Almunia
    Sagna Song Vermaelen Clichy
    Diaby Wilshere Rosicky
    Walcott Chamakh Arshavin

  82. Song starts at Cb

  83. Arsenal: Almunia, Sagna, Song, Vermaelen, Clichy, Diaby, Wilshere, Walcott, Rosicky, Arshavin, Chamakh.
Subs: Fabianski, Fabregas, van Persie, Vela, Djourou, Eboue, Gibbs

  84. Almunia
    Sagna
    Song
    Vermaelen
    Clichy
    Diaby
    Rosicky
    Wilshere
    Arshavin
    Chamakh
    Walcott

  85. come on arsenal

  86. Wenger has named his team for today’s game and here it comes: Almunia; Sagna, Song, Vermaelen, Clichy; Diaby, Wilshere, Rosicky; Walcott, Chamakh, Arshavin. Subs: Fabregas, Van Persie, Vela, Djourou, Fabianski, Eboue, Gibbs

  87. according to l`equipe we are after ciani,a centre back from bordeaux,he has one cap for france.

  88. CMON YOU GUNNERS

  89. Arsenal.

  90. Very lucky Theo.

  91. I’m interested to see how Song does at CB. Didn’t Wenger say that’s where Song would eventually lad up playing?

  92. lovely match between two attacking football team

  93. ARSHAVIINNNNNNNNNNNNN

  94. Same ol` Arsenal always winning.

  95. i think it wasnt penalty, but the red card was right

  96. Really classy, Blackpool. Just a week in the Prem and they already know all the disgraceful chants. Great!

  97. Thank god Silvestre is off the pitch!

  98. I really hope that people are paying attention to Walcott’s performance!

  99. THEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  100. Just as I say it, Walcott scores! 3-0.

  101. theo.theo.theo

  102. Theo on for a HAttrick today!

  103. LOL, Evil – felt a shiver when I saw his name come up.

  104. sell theo ,no final product.he is shit ;)

  105. Walcott is running them ragged I have to admit blackpool are unfortunate it was outside the box. Lets hope it does not spoil the game and becomes completely one way traffic, it was like that anyway before the sending off. No need for fabregas or RVP i guess. just another hour for blackpool to bear.
Fabulous exchange of positions between Chamakh and Walcott they are really struggling tp track him down

  106. Walcott looks a man posessed…Gotta love watching this kid when his confidence is up!

  107. I love seeing Rosicky in there as well. It is good to know that with no Nasri or Cesc we still have someone of his quality on the pitch.

  108. Yes, Rosicky’s performance has been top class. He set up Walcott countless times. He is showing why Wenger is right to stick with him. Rosicky is still the player he was back at WC 2006!

  109. SomeRandomGunner

What the hell is Diaby doing ? For god’s sake he is a DM ,

he is not making himself available to under pressure Wilshere

he is not tracking midfield runners
he is taking up awful positions
he gets more advanced than rosicky and doing all of his stupid acts and looses the ball
he is not letting Rosicky doing his attacking duties.

I am totally totally furious with his first half performance.

Walcott is awesome, so is Rosicky and Arshavin. We should have been up by 5-0 but it is ok. Wilshere is looking great.

  110. COYG Theo looking great so far. Arshavin looks better today.

Ultimately financial stabiltiy is the most important thing we can have and all hail to wenger for that. However, we still have to win trophies for the wenger experiment to truly be labeled a success.

We all believe this team has incredible potential, however to this point it has not lived up to that potential. History is littered with potential that is not fullfilled. It is up to arsene wenger and staff to facilitate that potential to bring the trophies this clubs players and fans deserve.

    COYG

  111. Diaby does look a little off his best. Just looks like he is not sure where he is supposed to be and what decisions to make. He will be fine though, no need to freak out about it.

  112. Curious if Cesc and RVP will see a little action just for fitness purposes?

  113. How good has Song been as a central defender? Will the whimpering, quivering doubters give Arsene some credit? He said Song can play as a central defender, didn’t he?

  114. I can’t stand the halftime comentary on ESPN here in the States…drives me nuts listening to these retards.

  115. SomeRandomGunner

    @Viceologist
I think so , we will see Rosicky replaced for sure with Cesc at some point RVP will be ther too.

Gareth bale scored a real real good volley.

  116. Other than the one bad touch that almost let Blackpool in on goal Song has done everything he needed to. Versatility is definitely a quality this squad posesses.

  117. Wow that Gareth Bale strike was sick for a Spud…hell of a volley, but he still looks like a chimp.

  118. Bill @ 3:52 pm – “We still have to win trophies for the Wenger experiment to truly be labeled a success.”
You are f*cking joking aren’t you?
    Hopeless!

  119. When did they allow primates in the Prem?

  120. Marouane has been unlucky i really want him to score today come on marouaannneeee!!

  121. Chamakh really should have put that first attempt away, but the subsequent attempts were very well saved…I think he will get one before the day is over.

  122. thats the stream im watching on if anybody needs

  123. Dear Messers. Capello and Waddle, stick that up your behind!!! Theo is a confidence player, all he needs is a run of games and consistency.

  124. Wonderful first-half from the boys..

Theo is a man-on-mission. He is fast becoming the player the shirt’s former owner was.. Hope he continues in this rich form..

And as Evil said, Rosicky is back to his 06 level.

Similar performance in the second half pleaseee…

    COYG!!!

  125. Some Random Gunner @ 3:52 pm – Are you watching the same game that I am? Are you aware that Blackpool are down to 10- men? That ‘Pool’s central midfield is almost non-existent? That Diaby and Wilshere are now free to go forward?
Please don’t do a Bill on me.

  126. Can’t believe I’m at work instead of watching Blackpool be put to the sword.

So pleased Theo is getting a run out. So often last season he didn’t get to start in the kind of game he might have run riot and drawn confidence from (ie a weak team at the Emirates). Has anyone else noticed he looks far more like a man than a boy these days? When he swapped shirts at Anfield he looked like he’s spent plenty of the summer in the gym…

  127. it thats the whole story of Diaby. One day he play like PV4,another day like Djemba-Djemba.

  128. SRG: Diaby – goal. What did I tell you?

  129. Sagna cant cross but still managed such a low cross for diaby to make it 4-0!!!

  130. not the easiest half-volley in the world, was it?

  131. I meant ‘such a beautiful low cross’

  132. DIABBBBBBBBBBY

    My man.

  133. Which game are these Diaby critics watching? He is arguably the most influential central midfielder on the field today.
    Jeez.

  134. yes attacking wise but today he got the task to play deeper and let wilshere go foward. But wilshere have to play deeper as diaby is going to may time foward. It s ok against Blackpool, but against stronger it s not.

  135. Credit to Blackpool.. They didnt ‘park-the-bus’ when we scored the first goal nor when they were reduced to 10-men.. They are still playing football and attacking unlike the stokes or blackburns who would have been kicking our players!!

I would like to play such teams all around the year..

Hats off to Ian Holloway and his players!!!

  136. I feel we’re playing a fluid middle 3. One stays back when the others go forward..

  137. 1coolsteve- Capello has done us a favour. Walcott looks fresh and raring to go. We need to bump up our score line it could be vital in May

  138. indiangooner ,if we play this sort of team all season we win 38 game

  139. HAAAAAATTTTTTTTT RICKKKKKKKKK HEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  140. hat trick theo

  141. GO THEOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Show them England boys how it’s done.

  142. Excuse me Lordgunner – Diaby is a bigger threat going forward. He has proven it in the past and underlined it today. As I type, his assist to Walcott was on the money. With Poll down to 10-men he has license to go forward at every opportunity. Wilshere is the one who has to be more conservative.
Come on guys – watch the game without pre-conceptions.

  143. IndianGooner- Yes credit to Blackpool but when other team see what happens when you take on Arsenal you will see a bus garage at the Emirates from now on.
    Hat trick Walcott

  144. Who is the DM now??

  145. This is fun. 4 – 0. Awesome offensive display.

I know it sounds greedy but I really would love to see the guys concentrate for the full 90 and keep a clean sheet. No easy consolation goals please.

  146. Cesc has replaced Diaby..

The front 3 are I’v been waiting to see… Chamakh/RvP/Theo: Theo with his pace, RvP with his artistic play and Chamakh for do-or-die attitude..

  147. I hope chamakh get a goal soon . He has done everything right supported the team with his build up play. Come on still time for him.

  148. Vela to come on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  149. a very good touch from Wenger to give Vela a chance .

  150. I wished Arsene waited some time for the substition..
But its time Vela to get some much required minutes… He needs them..

  151. shotta.song is CB today so diaby have to play as a sort of DM.Fine today to forget your primary job (defend),but against better team we would get kill in counter-attack
This is a minor critic today from a great match to watch

  152. THEO THEO THEO THEO.

He can certainly score plenty of goals from a wide position.

  153. The bloke on 5Live has just told us that Theo would have made Capello proud if he had been at the Emirates today.

Must be all that developmental work that the England manager has done with him I suppose.

  154. Its look RvP is desperate for Cesc to score tha himself…

  155. 700 for Sagna at his weddng this summer.

    Crazy!!!

  156. Cb, It may well be the case.. The way Theo was left out for the WC was cruel and this may have galvanized Theo..

  157. noooooooooooooo van persie stand up

  158. I really want Vela to score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  159. Why in the f*cking hell isn’t anyone shooting?? Are they planning for the most beautiful ‘walk-the-ball-into-the-net’??

  160. loool, lord gunner I feel you on that!!

  161. Great skill from Vela…

  162. IndianGooner can you stop complaining were winning 5-0 ffs. Shut up

  163. Chill IndianG, we are up 5 goals and have a experimentalteam out. I more concerned with the way Chamack is doing out wide.

  164. Chamakh finally got the goal his performance needed.. What a jump…

  165. chaaaaaaaaaaaamACKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  166. Now for Rosicky to get one..

  167. allez marouane allez,allez allez

  168. MAAARRRRRRRROUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS

  169. Six now. Also I have been impressed with the middle three and Jack especially, he has good well. Kept it nice and tidy.

  170. Good work by Sagna and Song.

  171. Maria:

Why didn’t Vela shoot??? I agree he can be a really special player. I would love to see someone from North America really make his mark as an attacking player in the PL. None that I can think of have to this point. A little bit of xenophilia I guess.

  172. This from the BBC text service:

‘Theo Walcott gets a standing ovation as he is taken off and replaced by Carlos Vela. You’ve set the bar now, Theo, can you stay at that level?’

Isn’t that indicative of the ridiculous pressure Theo is under. Here is a player who is still 2 years younger than Thierry Henry was when he found his feet at the highest level, and instead of simply praising the player for scoring a hatrick we get that back handed comment suggesting he should be scoring them every week!

  173. Come on Stoke!!

Is it still to warm for them to win a game

  174. OOOOOOOH

    Drama at the Britannia.

  175. OLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  176. Lil Jackie should have done better…

And are we playing 1-4-5 when we attack with just Vermaelen at the back..

  177. Albo:

I don’t know what you expect.

  178. Bill,

I think it’s a touch of the RVP chocolate leg. I really think that once Vela starts scoring with his left he has te ability to become a complete striker. Left, right, head, free-kicks and pens this boy WILL do it all. His just finding his groove. Less injuries and more starts should sort that out.

  179. come on wigan at least dont let chelsea stack up more gd

  180. nice to see tottenham giving themselves false hope, as always, the better they start, the more hilarious it is when they get another reality check. Hopefully this time it could be a thrashing by a quality european side..

Brilliant performance, big relief that rvp isnt injured, he still might be but lets wait and see. A quality performance from theo, absolitely class. Although i missed what apparently was his best goal coz my damn stream cut out, but i cant wait to see it on MOTD!

  181. we’re top!! haha for now..

  182. We are top of the league. Nice bonus.

  183. we’ve got a tough game away at blackpool though next weekend

  184. I was very impressed by Walcott today. His speed was always his greatest asset as was proven again today. Now we see him growing into a complete footballer with the ability to either finish or set up his team-mates. Once again he has shown up Capello and the plundits as complete tools. How could SWP be chosen over Walcott for Sth Africa is an act of complete football ignorance? Lennon maybe but SWP? Part of the problem is that even on this site, AAA supporters fell for the meme “he has no end product”. The boy is only 22 and but in big-game after big-game he showed he is a winner.

I admit, today was only Blackpool but Theo showed once he is injury free, he is the most promising winger in the game today. Go Theo, Go!

  185. What an AWESOME match!

Great to see Rosicky and Wilshere put in a whole 90 minutes. Wenger surely has some great plans for Wilshere. Rosicky was so destructive from central midfield! Diaby too was so cool and mature, just doing his job and then popping up with a sublime finish. Song was like this impenetratable wall. Dayamn!

Finally it seems there’s something very different about this year. It’s like our players are all playing for each other and they are all now used to the 4-3-3. This was there for some of the matches last year but this feeling seems too be very strong now.

With this kind of form, add some favourable luck with injuries and we may not even need any more signings!

  186. Its amazing that all these xenophobic pundit pr*cks don’t realize that if you are good enough, no mater you nationality you would play for Arsenal. Expect them though to give credit to Owen Coyle for wilshere’s development. So two English boys started for Arsenal Today and that’s because Arsene thinks they are ready.

They have also refused to acknowledge our strength in depth which surpasses that of Manure or Chelsea. We certainly got better covers, Bendtner, Johan, Kosciescney, Nasir and Denilson were all missed today. Add that to RVP and Cesc that came on later!!

  187. Excellent display as expected. Walcott could really break through this season and send the likes of waddle into the holes they deserve to be in. The signs were there last week when he hit his free kick, today he was unplayable in the first half.

Although they were at the end of a walloping, credit to Blackpool for playing the right way. The league needs more of them rather than the thugs from Stoke.

  188. Was watching the game on ESPN in India. I didn’t pay much attention to the commentary but the commentator did say something I commend him for. He said this a few minutes after Fabregas came onto the pitch.

“Most of the summer was spent questioning if Fabregas would even be at Arsenal this season. Barcelona using the fact that he was there before to try and get him back. But you have to remember that when he was at Barcelona they didn’t do much to stop him from coming to Arsenal. And Fabregas owes a lot to Arsenal. They’re the ones who groomed him into a world class player”

  189. Stoke denied a goal did it cross the line?. lucky spuds

  190. ‘plundits’ shotta. Very good.

  191. the team today was pacy and direct although the 2nd half slowed down a bit(understandable though)…this approach is much better than the”pass n score” strategy that we have..

sagna, song and vermaelen played well…especially sagna who worked his socks off…

arshavin, diaby, vela and jack -a bit of fine-tuning is required but all of them put in a great shift today

Chamakh- needs to work on scoring goals with his foot.
    awesome work rate though!

Vanpersie, cesc both tried to get goals ..so thats good coz we still tried to get a goal till the last minute

Walcott- i will wait till i judge him..but he’s looking sharp and determined

and MotM Rosicky- never made me feel the loss of cesc, was great attacking and defensive wise too..better than nasri…better vision and control..if he can stay
of injury i think we can really have a go this season

special mention to blackpool- great support from the fans and tried to play

  192. Does anybody know wether installing sopcast can cause viruses?

  193. sopcast is generally ok – no virus but maybe a bit of malware/spyware – so i tent to use it as last option for a stream

  194. Am warming up to Ian Holloway. Nice sincere interview without the usual Arsene bashing.

  195. Holloway seems like a class act. I really wish for Blackpool to stay in the Prem. If one of Stoke/Blackburn/Hull goes down instead I will be happy.

  196. as usual Holloway was asked about the penalty incident repeatdly in the hope of making it an excuse but he brushed it aside and said they would have got beat anyway. And gave a lot of credit to Arsenal.

  197. evil, hull are already in the championship

  198. thanks deisegooner…malware and spyware are some of theworst viruses though so i wont bother the media player streams r decent although they made me miss theo’s 3rd and marouanes which is annoying but ill catch up on football first and MOTD

  199. They are? I won’t have to see Phil Orange this season? Oh..wow!

  200. wigan are actually playing really well, if it was us against them with we’d be 2-0 down, but we wouldnt let them outplay us like their outplaying chelsea. But they have this annoying ability to be completely outplayed and pressurised, then just score like that.

  201. Zap – if you get some anti spyware and delete spocast after you have used and run the antispyware you should be ok – like i say last resort as its a lot of work

  202. haha..yep. Btw wigan 0-1 chelsea Half Time

  203. the tangerine hued one is still on ‘gardening leave’ is he not?

  204. the goal you missed Zap – http://arsenalist.com/

  205. Third for Chelski. Anelka.

There will be a segment on Theo by that plonker Hansen tonight on MOTD.

Capello was another match. Shame really, good knows England needs a decent striker.

  206. Maria.

You can’t win anything with kids as the old punk would say. Doubt you can expect any bottom line from MOTD.

Chances are that they’ll focus more on what Chelski are doing. I fear for Roberto Martinez – he might be the first manager to go. Mike Dean has just denied them a stone wall penalty.

  207. The Indian sign is hanging over Wigan…LOL!

Disallowed goal – denied penalty…Someone is going to get carded next….

  208. Theo, Sagna, Song, Mozart .. excellent, excellent. Arshavin too. chamakh hung in the air for at least 3 minutes waiting for that corner to arrive!

I like that Bloack pool never resorted to dirty stuff, and tried all day long to play. On on them.

  209. The ref has refused to book Terry again. He’s already got one yellow card and it just smirks of – well, – ‘let’s let the poster boys get away with murder’.

    Wigan are being hard done.

  210. Blackpool.

    Diaby was also a treat.

  211. SomeRandomGunner

This score line is just too unfair on Wigan. They dominated the entire first half, and in second half poor refreeing has not helped them.

  212. By the way, Spurs or not, I am delighted that Stoke’s goal was not allowed. Would rather see the back of those scums to their rightful championship place. 0 points in 2 games they have, and before long hope to see them fighting out to avoi relegation.

  213. It will be tough for Wigan. Shouldn’t really be letting in so many goals at home. 4 to Blackpool and now 4 to Chelsea.

  214. keysersoze

I think what’s more amusing is the way Chelski are already being coronated as the title winners.

  215. Media wants a good story. From the very start they will need to write some teams off and build some other teams up. Otherwise how will the story of the season unfold?

  216. Now if only every team played against us like Blackpool did.We would win the league.Sadly we are in the real world. We learned nothing today we didnt know already. We are great against teams that let us play.

btw Chelsea havent played well but like us are battering a poor team.Wigan and Blackpool certs for relegation

  217. Far from it, I am looking forward to Blackpool giving a footballing lesson to Stoke. They have some mettle which was on display in flashes today.

  218. Stoke for relegation this time. They have believed their hype and think they are a good team.

  219. Wigan players are doing Martinez no favors. He could be sacked soon. The players are neither good enough nor disciplined enough to play 4-3-3. Plus in England you get no favors from the ref for playing football. I saw John Terry nail Nzogbia twice and not even a foul much less a yellow card. There is a reason why survivors like Blackburn and Stoke play “thug ball.”

Consols – Full credit to Finsbury for the “plundits”.

  220. Add Birmingham to the list of “thug-ballers”. One wonders how soon Mark Ooze will have Fulham playing dirty.

  221. really hope stoke go down!!

    my prediction for the drop..

    18. Stoke
    19. Wigan
    20. Blackpool

  222. this is wigan at home aswell, it doesnt bode well for away games!

  223. A great day at the Emirates. Well played Blackpool for not resorting to kick-ball when they were losing so heavily. And well done to their fans who seemed to be enjoying “The best trip they’ve ever been on”!

Theo was excellent today even before they went down to 10 men. Cesc got an outstanding welcome back from the Arsenal faithful and even Arsene got a rousing rendition of his song.

  224. Thanks Pass, always look forward to your sum up after you return from home matches.

  225. DS,

Yep, but I heard Lawro on 5 live talking about it.

  226. This is England

Has anyone got a link for their keepers save from Chamakh in the first half it looked world class from behind the goal

  227. Great post, Muppet.

    What a great game.
Although they were at the end of a walloping, credit to Blackpool for playing the right way. The league needs more of them rather than the thugs from Stoke.
    Hear, hear, keysersoze!

I felt today we saw another change in the way we play. We were less gung-ho than of late, even after going 2-0 up and playing 10 men. It also seemed to me that we dealt better with the ball over the top – we either caught them offside or the central defenders reacted more quickly and won the ball. So I wonder if we are witnessing better execution of our defensive strategy. Does anyone else think so? Or disagree?

    ****
    @ Deisegooner

I think you’re missing the point – BUYING the FA Cup was what Pompey did wrong, not winning it. Overspending on players and wages.

    @ Maq
The team “has” to be in place by the end of the transfer window, not now. Other clubs do have a choice as to whether they sell their players. We can’t jsut point and say “We’re having him.”

    @ consolsbob

Must be all that developmental work that the England manager has done with him I suppose.

ha ha – love the sarcasm!

  228. And the clock went up. Perfect day, really.

  229. FG – I thought the clock celebration was spot on too. It was so nice to see the ground almost full before the game started rather than this drifting in and spoiling other people’s enjoyment that usually happens! Still can’t keep the buggers in their seats until the game is over though!

  230. Passenal

Although not as many left early this time, wouldn’t you say?

I feel a bit sorry for Blackpool. But perhaps they deserved a thrashing for turning up in the most hideous away kit since Celtic’s.

  231. Zap, Sopcast is safe enough. If you have any worries just download SuperAntiSpyware free addition and install that 1st. If you are using Avast anti virus real time shields that should also stop most malware.

Very entertaining game today. Credit to Blackpool for playing football.

  232. AW said in his post-match press conference that he is “confident” of getting one more new signing. And “possibly 1 + 1″. Exciting.

  233. And what did I say the other day about Theo’s well-times runs? And get him with his cushioned headers. I mean, was I dreaming? Theo winning balls in the air??? He has come on so much.

  234. Both Wigan and Blackpool are both teams that actucally attempt to play football.

Shame they both got thumped today.

  235. That’s true Maria, but they won’t improve unless they keep going on that path. It would be a shame if they gave up and became stoke or blackburn. We need less thuggery and more football in the PL.

FG, I noticed that about Theo and his headers. His all round game was much improved. Arsene took the raw product and is really smoothing the rough edges. Theo is coming on in leaps and bounds and I can’t wait until he scores his first free kick.

  236. Wigan and Blackpool just need their managers to be brave and their owners to take the long view.

  237. Is it just me or do our players seem to have matured a bit over the summer. There seem more men (instead of boys) on the pitch now.

  238. Last season we’d have got to 3-0 and stopped trying, conceded late on in the second half and closed the game with a nervy ten minutes. The lads didn’t stop working today, brilliant stuff.

  239. Bill, it is ‘attacking’ not offensive.

  240. Vince – totally agree. Most impressive. A mark of real progress.

  241. I’m delighted with one goal in particular and that is Chamakh’s goal. that goal gives me hope that we will be able to deal with team who defend deep. Blackpool played a part in our fluent game but other stuborn teams will not give us any space arouind the box and that where Chamakh comes in handy from corners and set pieces, he could be the difference this seaosn. He gets involved in the build up a lot help the team swapped places with Walcott and complemented him really well. on many occasion we saw walcott drifting to the middle while Chamakh covered for him and that what I call a team player.

  242. I feel that to Dups.

Just a question for anyone that has any idea. Why do you think we let Sol and Gallas go, just so we can another sign another old guy for more than 5 million.

  243. I don’t think that is true Vince, last season was all about massive scores early on. If you look back to before RVP got injured it was all 4-1s or above.

I hope the difference this season is we start slower ut gain form so that we reach our peak near the end of the season. All I care about is 3 points!!!

  244. Watching MOTD – Theo looks more and more like Henry every day.

  245. F*** RIGHT OFF Hansen!!!

  246. Hansen is a bitter old Bastard!!!!!

  247. Maia et al – Not only are the players more mature but it is their 2nd year playing 4-3-3. Now they know what the system requires both offensively and defensively.

  248. did you just hear Alan Hansen talking about Theo; the man just won’t give any credit, even the sychophant jug earred one tried to temper the scotch rantings!

  249. This stuff about his football brain is such nonsense – it’s nearly aways about technique with Theo. He can’t always pull off what he wants to do because he’s moving so quickly.

  250. Just like my uncle just said those old two fools are out of touch with the world let alone modern day football.

    No footballing brain my ass.

  251. 100% agree FunGunner

  252. Hansen has no imagination anyway – he puts EVERYTHING down to poor defending.

  253. It will be interesting if both Chelsea and us can sustain this type of goal-scoring this season. Last year we started like a house on fire and petered off in the end especially after RVP’s injury. TBH, Chelsea sustained has their own dominance from last season into this, playing a 4-3-3 to boot.

  254. And if I were a Blackpool fan, I’d be royally pissed off at having their team’s efforts dismissed by the bitter scot.

  255. The funny thing is, even after today, I still like Theo playing as a right-sided forward in a 4-3-3. I can’t see him as a central striker. Same with Carlos Vela but on the left, obviously. This formation seems to suit them so well. Just me?

  256. What’s the Scotch git been saying now?

  257. POOOOOOOOOOLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

  258. hello, Pz
long time no see! Basically, the bitter Scot has not been able bring himself to give TW credit for a fantastic game, preferring to pick apart the defensive failings of Blackpool. He won’t be impressed unless Theo tears apart A Hole or someone of that quality, he says. And he also claims that Theo only played well because he didn’t have time to think about what he was going to do.

  259. It’s a busy time of year in the zimmer frame-testing business.

It sounds like it’s time poor old Hansen was shipped off to the funny farm. Theo was brilliant today, absolutely brilliant. The best thing I’ve seen in football for a few months now.

  260. No point getting worked up about Hansen. The twit has a short memory, enter stage left Theo against Barca etc etc. I think it will be for more fun watching him fidgeting on the couch when everyone will be talking about Theo in Henry brackets…The boy is good, but still on his way to being Sublime

Anyway i thought Rosicky was outstanding today. Every pass was incisive, he worked incredibly hard and it was quite easy to forget who was getting itchy feet on the bench.

  261. TR7 was indeed outstanding.

  262. Hansen is just bitter about 1989 the sad old tosser.

  263. FunGunner:
I thought AW selection was inventive today, and TR7 embraced the role. I almost wept when the double sub came on! Imagine being 4 or 5 down, raising your head after trying to get you breath back and seeing a couple of chaps called RVP and Cesc popping on for a little kick about. Pure footballing decadence.

  264. Pity we don’t have any depth in our squad.

Nice to see you back PZ.

  265. Song went about his job quietly, yet admirably. Ok it wasn’t Drogbaesque opposition but ya know a little practice never hurt anybody.

  266. Strange how quiet it is in here after a good win.

  267. I suppose most are still in the pubs celebrating.

  268. Going back to the that dickhead Hanson’s comments about Theo. Was it not Theo who ripped apart Liverpool’s so called defence in the CL game a couple of seasons ago.

  269. Hanson has made his mind up on Theo and simply wont admit he may be wrong…..Theo still has it all to do but you give credit where its due – lest see if Theo sustains it and makes him eat his words – thats all we can hope for

  270. I’d like to make him eat his fucking words the useless twat. He is far removed from today’s football he is a waste of the licence fee. He should either be put out to grass or shot. I prefer the 2nd option.

  271. I was jusg listening to the game again on 5live and Keown was worried early on with our defence, and while I usually just ignore critism he really seemed like he wanted us to win but was concerned about the lack of leadership in the back. I wonder if anyone knows is Tommy V are yeller? (If that is a word.)

On Theo all round performance he said it was excellent best his since of him ever!! On his third goal he claimed it was the best goal from a English player for many a year.

  272. Maria, it was the 1st time Song & Verminator played in defence together.

  273. dups@ 12:35 am – They played together in the 2nd half of the Champs League vs Barca when Verm left that big gap for Ibra to run in and slam in that 2nd goal (Song was in no-mans land). I think they both played together in the 2nd Leg at the Camp Nou. But they looked more assured today contrary to your report of Mr Keown’s disquiet. Early days yet but it looks very promising.

  274. ”Hansen is just bitter about 1989 the sad old tosser.”

    dam right

  275. @shotta

Vermaelen and Sylvestre played in the 2nd leg at Camp Nou.

  276. Although I did feel at time there was such a large gap between Verm and Song and that a better striker would’ve punished us. Ah well hopefully Kos and Djorou will both be back for the next match.

  277. Happy to see Pz back in the family.

Frank. Is you is or is you ain’t?

  278. For those wondering about strength in depth yesterday’s team might have been an imaginary:

    Flapper
    Eboue Kos Djou Gibbs
    Denilson
    Cesc Ramsey
    Nasri Bendtner Vela

    Gosh … no RvP.

  279. With a bench including Eastmond, Cruise, Henri Lansbury, Mannone, Nordveit and Randall.

  280. Hangseng is a type of Chinese tea isn’t it? Hate the stuff myself.

  281. The best highlights of the game for me were Walcott and – the one the makes me the happiest – is the return of Rosicky as we know him, this guy is pure class.

  282. Also the guy on ESPN who said Chamakh had a terrible game till he scored is a foolish idiot.

Chamakh had a great game and played for the team, he was involved in at least two goals beside scoring one himself.

  283. Personally I have had my doubts about Walcott.

That said, boy did I enjoy being proven SOOOOOO wrong!

Stunning stuff from the lad, I hope his is the springboard for him to really burst out and shine.

What really impressed me is that he showed some terrific skill as well, so I guess he’s more than “just pace”.

I have two other thoughts I’d like to share:

    1. Has anyone else noticed that now that the rest of the world have now noticed the strong English youth element coming through at Arsenal, there’s a concerted effort to get them moved out elsewhere?

No credit to AW for young Jack or Keiran, just – hey, they need to go elsewhere, etc etc.

I guess we are being naieve if we think AW and Arsenal will get any credit, they have already lined up their tactics on this one.

    2. I know it’s early days, and this could prove to be totally off the mark, but West Ham seem to be in serious trouble.

Looking at that, and the behaviour of their “supporter” porn baron owners, could it be that sh!tty comments about your players and claiming they’re all for sale because they’re all so cr@p might just be a touch counter-productive?

You can earn as much money as you like, but at the end of the day, we’re all human.

Perhaps something some of our “fans” who love to dish it out might do well to sit and ponder on a bit?

  284. Hmmm……………….moderation?

Maybe there’s a word down there to alter…..

  285. “I almost wept when the double sub came on! Imagine being 4 or 5 down, raising your head after trying to get you breath back and seeing a couple of chaps called RVP and Cesc popping on for a little kick about.”

I thought the same thing yesterday Remonstrate.

Maria, Gallas is 33 and has missed at least 1/3rd of each season with us through injury. Sol is 35. Buying a 30 year old who is fitter is good business as he is at his peak for a defender.
