Deals To Be Done, Decisions To Be Made & More

Arsene has set the squad their target of finishing as champions at the end of the coming campaign. In the official Arsenal magazine, the manager said:

The aim is to continue to progress as we have been doing. We were very close last year – closer than the previous season – so we are heading in the right way. We hope we can continue that this season. It is important to start well, start strongly and get into a good position early on and to try to maintain the level.

It is a realistic ambition, despite concerns about two positions, namely goalkeeper and centre back. Whilst the former is based on evidence of previous campaigns, the latter is more founded on the step into the unknown that the current squad would be taking. Of those at the club, injury and youth leaves the all bar Vermaelen untested in the Premier League environment. Djourou was robbed of the chance to prove his abilities by injury last term whilst Koscielny has risen through the French Leagues to Arsenal in a short space of time. Nordtveit has spent a couple of seasons on loan to ready him for the Premier League but Wenger would no doubt prefer to bring him through via the Carling and FA Cups this season ahead of challenging for a Premier League starting place.

With that in mind, the apparent re-signing of Campbell is of no surprise. Yet he should not be considered anything other than an experienced head for emergency use, his primary function must surely be to assist in the development of the younger players. Reports suggest that William Gallas has priced himself out of a move to Panathinaikos, all of Serie A and Ligue 1; would it be a surprise if he were to re-sign also?

The wages mentioned do not appear to be outside of Arsenal’s budget and on the basis of last season, Gallas had regained his appetite following his self-destructive actions in the previous eighteen months. Irrespective of our opinions about Gallas the person, the player is still is a world class centre back. If Campbell can be afforded time at an older age, it is not beyond Wenger or the club to offer an opportunity for the Frenchman to continue at Arsenal.

Wenger has himself noted that there should be more numbers defensively. Per Mertesacker has once more surfaced as an alternative to Phil Jagielka and on the basis of quoted figures, represents better value for money than the Everton centre back. The German international has apparently told the media that his future will be resolved next week, £10m the bid likely from Arsenal; a new contract from Werdern Bremen the likely outcome.

Thomas Vermaelen has backed Wenger’s ambitions for 2010-11:

We have a good young group who are very aggressive and want to improve. I think people will always say we can’t compete. It is not the first time, but we have to do what we always do which is work hard and play our own game, then we can compete.

It is not a situation to which Arsenal are unaccustomed. Perenially considered the weakest link of the ‘Big Four’; every season upsetting those views by remaining in situ. That is not the limit of the ambition within the club, nor should it ever be.

Those aims have been boosted in recent weeks over the Cesc Fabregas drama. Barcelona’s pursuit Cesc has long dwindled into empty rhetoric from the Camp Nou personnel at whatever level they are employed. A couple of weeks ago, a subtle change of tack became apparent; the club were no longer the overt target, pressure being turned onto Cesc to hand in a written transfer request.

That appears to have failed if reports this morning are to be believed, the English-based media finally putting the Catalans on the back foot with ‘news’ that the player has been advised not to hand in such a request in order that bridges are not burned upon his return to training in the immediate aftermath of The Emirates Cup.

I suspect that the much reported financial crisis is not as deep as the media would have you believe and that Barcelona are engaged in a game of ‘Transfer Chicken‘ with Arsenal, waiting to see if other targets are positively responsive to overtures before returning to the scene of their original crime with an offer that will make Arsenal sit up and take notice.

Either way, when Fabregas returns to training it will be time to put the media circus to bed. To allow focus for the season which will then be ten days away, a public commitment to Arsenal is required and some may say, well overdue.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. not a big fan of gallas but wouldnt mind him continuing if we dont muster a good replacement.

  2. Close? Maybe. But no cigar. It was plain to all what we lacked last season and its still lacking. We need a comanding keeper but we still have average no2 Almunia, mentally weak Fabianski and not quite ready Manonne and Szezesny. We have also lost an experienced defender in Gallas. So whil eim all for signing Sol back up i would still like an experienced centrehalf to start alongside Vermaelen.

    Vermaelen
    New centrehalf

    Kos
    Djourou

    Sol

The likes of Nordtveit, Bartley and Miguel need another season on loan and in the reserves IMO

If we dont get a centrehalf and just go with Vermaelen, Kos, Djourou, Sol and promote Nordtveit/Bartley we better pray for no injuries and that both Kos and Djourou show they are up to the task, because there are doubts over both.

If no centrehalf comes in then a defensive midfielder is the next best bet to sit in there with Song in front of back four. In fact id be all for a new DM to work alongside Song anyway in a 4-2-1-2-1 in the AC Milan mold.

There is time to address this still but something needs to happen soon.

  3. I propose that Arsenal fans World wide post letters once a week for the next four weeks to UEFA & FIFA complaining about Barcelona FC’s ‘tapping up’ of Cesc Fabregas. Also post a letter just once to Arsenal FC requesting that they formally complain to UEFA & FIFA. I have drawn up 3 template letters that I will email to willing participants. All you need to do is type in your own Name & Address before printing off & posting. Momentum will be boosted by you forwarding the email to every one of your Arsenal FC fan family & friends, encouraging them to participate.
The aim of repetitive letters is to create an Admin headache for UEFA & FIFA with thousands of letters received from all over the world & display the strength of feeling from Arsenal FC fans. The purpose of the single letter to Arsenal FC is again to display the strength of feeling from us fans.
My email address for this campaign from where I will email you the letter templates is …….. ArsenalFansHateBarcelonaFC@gmail.com

Nothing is really a surprise anymore but I somehow don’t see Gallas in an Arsenal shirt next season.

I also don’t expect Sol to be just an emergency player. At his age he will need to play regularly, so if he keeps his form, of last season, I would expect him to do just that. It should not be forgotten that much of the time he played was when we had a lot of players out.

The defender I would like to see would be a Frimpong but a bit more ready & savvy. A big boy to bite into tackles to augment Song but only when the occasion demands, like the Stokes, Blackburns & Villas etc away. A proper DM- Song is much more than that. I like both Frimpong & Eastmond (even more) but it is still a bit early for them.

I doubt the Cesc situation will be fully resolved before he is due back in England. It seems Barca are not intent on coming up with a market value + offer to tempt us so, at the moment, it looks more likely he will stay. If he does go then we are well equipped to replace him from within. We could even be a tighter but less attractive unit without him.

  5. No, not gallas. he will be 33 this season and he is not what we need. The reason sol is good is because of his leadership, experience, passion and more importantly he is the type of defender we need.

What this squad needs is essentially a younger version of sol. We dont need to look anywhere other than the game against stoke last season to see why we need him. His presence helped so much in holding the young team together after the ramsey disaster especially psychologically.

He was the old war horse who had seen it all, it simply felt like he took the entire team under his wings and held them through that storm.

Another thing was his height and presence, and I do keep harping about this because it still is something that we are not ready for. Sol should not start against teams whose strengths lay in pace like villa or united, because his legs are gone, but look how effective he was against stoke with their agricultural tactics.

It was a game where I saw an arsenal defence looking very secure since a long, long time. His physical tussle with ricardo fuller was a joy to watch.

So I am happy to hear that arsene is in the market for a new defender, because we need it to have any chance of winning the title next season.

    Cheers all!

  6. ‘A public commitment to Arsenal (by Cesc) is required and some may say, well overdue.’

    Absolutely!

  7. It’s clear Wenger wants a change and le boss knows that Gallas is the cause of unrest within the camp. I wish he would sign because he is our best defender, I’d even try him at left back where he did so well for Chelsea. I know he didnt like it but Clichy is a liability!

  8. I hope we have seen the end of Gallas at Arsenal. Although a very good player he seems to be detrimental to team spirit. It is no coincidence that Frances world cup disintegrated amongst feuds and internal squabbling. It has been recorded how unpopular he was among the younger players. Although brutally honest about the younger players and their cosseted treatment and overrated opinion of themselves, it was undiplomatic in the way he raised his concerns!

  9. sorry, to nit pick but i think we should put to bed the phrase the big four and replace it with ‘arsenal and the pretenders to the footballing crown’ or some thing similar, with club finances the way they are at arsenal, we can be allowed to distance ourselves from the filth in our wake.

  10. The last comment Cesc made when he said he was embarrassed by the shirt stunt and was only thinking about Arsenal was barely reported. The media have studiously reported any ambiguous, non committal statement that could be twisted to fit their agenda. The fact that his first thought on winning the WC was to consol his Arsenal team mate on the losing side and then to thank the Arsenal management, players and fans has also been conveniently swept under the carpet.

I’m sure he would be happy to go to barca if they pay Arsenal what he is worth. Equally I am sure he is happy to carry on playing for Arsenal if they don’t – hence his neutral responses. After all he has never claimed to be unhappy at Arsenal. He loves and respects Arsene and he is proud to be captain of Arsenal and has made it clear throughout that he will not do anything to disrespect the club.

  11. Hallo people. Long time.

I was hoping that by now, someone would have lined up everyone concerned with Barcelona along a wall and shot all the phuckers like the dogs they are – but hey, I also want my council tax bill reduced and that’s not going to happen.

Yogi, just thinking about what impact a public declearation of loyalty from Cesc will do – my sense is that it’s a bit too little and too late. Cesc is not a fringe player and is the captain of Arsenal and his silence is criminal.

I don’t mind if he goes to Barcelona, I only have a problem if Arsenal don’t get paid the justified value of the player – which if you asked me is north of £60 million, especially after his stock went up with the assist for Spain’s world cup winning goal.

If Barca ain’t going to offer a respectable transfer fee, then Gazidis and Wenger should shut the door on this and nail that door proper until they can come back with something respectable. Meanwhile Cesc should knuckle down and do the job he’s paid to do until he’s told otherwise.

As for defenders, I am excited by the fact that we’re still looking for another body and that Sol is staying. Campbell’s presence in the dressing room to me is more valuable than his pitch time.

Schwarzer’s introduction will pacify most people and have an alternative approach as Fabianski and/or Tech 9 make the grade, but the key thing will be how the team defends as a unit. As Stuart Robson says, the team needs to decide its defensive strategy and stick to it, whatever that strategy is. Our problem is that the team stopped defending as a unit last season.

  12. Cesc’s departure seems pretty much postponed for another season, but with his migration imminent in the next 12 months or so, is now not the time to give the Captaincy to the Verm rather than having to rebuild in 12 months when we know what is coming. Cesc will be an outstanding servant to Arsenal this coming season but with his heart elsewhere we should not waste another minute in Establishing solid foundations to build from. Verm put his guts on the line last season lead by quiet example and has gone some way in establishing a non nonsense aura about him. RVP is a nice chap but too temperamental and injury prone to any sort of rock to build on. (no denying his quality but i think we are long over due a 25 goal season from him, and the captaincy might be distraction. Thoughts?

  13. I totally second Thomas Vermaelen for Arsenal captain after Cesc.

  14. Hey darius, nice to see you again. I’m surprised you’ve been sucked into the Cesc silence is criminal nonsense. Not your kind of level headed positivity at all. We have absolutely no right to demand Cesc says this or does that.
Arsenal have paid him to play to the best of his abilities and that is what he’s always done. None of our business what he does or doesn’t say to a twisted and corrupt media.
Come on mate don’t fall for it they want a wedge driven between us and our captain, surely you can see that?

  15. There you see? ‘remonstrate’ has utterly bought into it.

  16. actually wrote that before Mr Stones post Steww

  17. Sorry didn’t mean that. I meant you’ve bought barca’s line (propagated by the media) that Cesc is here only for 1 more year.

  18. its not about corrupting the media. I actually think Cesc has been more than clear about his intentions. and that’s absolutely fine. I will always admire and respect his conduct on and off the pitch. I feel that Captaincy should be build on as of now. I like Arsenes assessment of 11 captains on the pitch…its sweet but i don’t really buy it. a long term captain creates a level of consistency and stability require for that final push when heads drop a little.

  19. LoL Steww.

Have I gotten that rusty from being away? Shame on me.

I don’t so much think that Cesc should respond to the media hoggwash and the Barca players clandestine tactics…but I’m looking at this from a communication point of view.

Cesc is the Arsenal captain and he has a level of responsibility that other players don’t necessarily have. In this respect, he should well know what impact this can have (whether factual or not or whether it’s bull crap or not), he should know that there is a risk that diatribe and bull will quickly fill a vacuum if not addressed.

It’s not unreasonable that Cesc can directly address the Arsenal fans through the web site. Passenal pointed out two example above which I didn’t consider as direct communication – the consolation of RVP and the dedication to Arsenal of his world cup triumph….

But sometimes, fact doesn’t matter when bull crap reigns supreme – and my argument is that as captain, Cesc has more of a responsibility than normal.

I have full confidence that as long as Cesc is wearing an Arsenal shirt, he will be the first class player and warrior he has always been for us – but in the same token, his captaincy makes it imperative that he plays a role in communicating with Arsenal fans.

  20. Totally agree with “a long term captain creates a level of consistency and stability ” how I would love Cesc to be the next Tony Adams. Simple fact is all he has ever said is it’s up to Arsene if he stays. Arsene has said he stays.

  21. Steww…I’m trying to respond but my comments are disappearing into the ether…can’t figure out what’s cutting here.

  22. LOL Steww my friend .

Have I gotten that rusty from being away? Shame on me.

I don’t so much think that Cesc should respond to the media hoggwash and the Barca players clandestine tactics…but I’m looking at this from a communication point of view.

  23. Remonstrate, I think the captaincy is symbolic rather than having the meaning you seem to give it. However much longer Cesc is with us for, he has not actually done anything to justify losing the armband. He has not publicly criticised the club or his colleagues, so what would be the justification for humiliating and potentially de-motivating him in that way? PV4 and TH14 were linked away from the club whilst captain but did not lose the armband or the respect of their colleagues so this is nothing new. His fellow players are professionals. If he stays they will continue as before and if he goes they will wish him well and learn to play with his replacement.

  24. I agree (as usual) with Passenal & Steww.

  25. All the kiddies from yesterday mornings blog must be having a lie in today. Thank God.

  26. Fair enough points, and admittedly getting swept into the cesc departure landscape so i do appreciate you level headed takes on the situation

I just feel that when the going gets tough, i mean really tough, you want someone talking you up when the chips are down and you know they wont be sunning themselves elsewhere in a few months but will be in this sluggin match that is the premiership for some time to come. I guess my personal most iconic moment of last season was Sol’s reaction at Stoke last season. He made the boys feel like warriors and a moment that marked memories. Maybe i’m just hoping for a bit of that more often. Anyway despite of all l the permutations its a fantastic team tobe emotionally attached to, and regardless of outcomes i always enjoy the ride though thick n thin!

  27. I too agree with Passenal and Steww.
Making demands of loyalty from Cesc is falling for BarceLoaner’s tactics hook-line-and-sinker.
Welcome back Darius – your positivity has been missed.

  28. Remonstrate @ 11:31 am – Cesc has always given 100% for the club as we saw with his efforts playing with a broken leg vs BarceLoaner. What do you prefer; playing with emotion or playing with a team-mate like Cesc?

  29. Champions no chance. We lack a quality keeper Fabianski and Almunia have proved that over the last 18mths they are not top quality. We look weak at CB.and god help us if Song gets injured.
In the last 5 seasons we have finished 4th three times and 3rd twice so how Wenger thinks we our going to improve on that surprises me.
I see us finishing 4th above Spurs but below Chelski.Manure and Shitty.I wish i could be more confident but the lack of back up quality will hurt us once we start to get injuries

  30. We nearly had a quality debate going then Dave comes and shits all over the blog. Wipe it up and go away dave.

  31. YW

If Cesc comes out and says he wants to stay at the club will you believe him?Henry and Greedy said the same when they nearly left.the following season they were both poor and left the following summer.some times its better to cut your loses

  32. Sorry steww

We are going to win the CL and the premiership by 20pts.And Diaby will win world player of the year. Happy now

  33. Yay – that’s better dave. You can stay.

  34. Whenever Cesc was linked with a move to Barca or RM he always came out and clarified stuff immediately. Not so this summer, so whats changed? I for one don’t expect or want him to come out and profess his love for Arsenal everytime someone in Barca farts. But this time around the situation is a lot more serious. Of course I expect nothing less than 100% from Cesc and he is very level headed & intelligent. So far in his career he has done stuff which will benefit him in the long term (as he should) so I don’t think he’ll do anything drastic just yet.

  35. Dave, part of being a supporter is to support. That means whatever happens you have faith in your team and manager.

  36. Dave is right we have to wake up to the fact that most of our rivals are constantly rebuilding as we seem to stay stagnate. The keeper situation is a worry and also the lack of depth in other departments. Wenger needs to address this fast or I can see us not even finishing 4th and then what excuses will he have then or will he be departing the same way as Cesc will be? I really do hope I eat my words because Arsenal deserve to be up there with the best challenging and succeeding.

  37. Evidence please Mikey. How and in what way do we ‘stagnate’?
Do you not realise that we have to read that kind of nonsense every pre season and every time it is proven to be wrong.
Come on – Dave worked out how to be positive, so can you.

  38. If any team is stagnating it is Man U with Giggs, Scholes & Ferdinand getting to old, and in Ferdinands’ case to feeble.

  39. Second that dups :)

  40. Speaking of stagnation, isn’t it funny the way all the other clubs are waiting for Man City and possibly Chelsea to do some business in the transfer window so that they can feed off the scraps created by the domino effect.

Truly an indictment of the precarious state football finance is in.

  41. steww,

how exactly were such claims ‘proven wrong’?

did we win anything last season? did we fuck…

did we get dicked by every ‘big’ team last season? yes, we did…

have we been found out for lacking presence and real depth? yes we have…

    comments?

and before anyone jumps to the usual ‘la-la-la-la, I can’t hear you’ reactions, try pointing out the elusive ‘areas of improvement’, and I am talking overall improvement, not talking about the youngsters having another year under their belts!

don’t get me wrong, I will support anything in red and white than is is front of me, as I will die an Arsenal fan, but if anyone on here thinks we have a shot at the title with the squad we have, I suggest laying off the pipe…

  42. “…stay stagnate”? Alas my knowlege of English fails me there. What can it mean?

Arsenal are the most dynamic team in the Premiership. While others endlessly recycle players from season to season, casting off the purchases made a year earlier in favour of a more expensive and shinier model, the chavs and blue mancs spring to mind, or rely on old legs, manu, Arsenal builds properly.

We all like new signings, I do hope that there is a new centre back coming and perhaps a keeper, but to think that the club lacks ambition flies in the face of any sane person’s experience of the past few years.

As for Cesc, I hope he stays but am sanguine about him going. The last player that I got upset about leaving Arsenal was John Radford but I was so much younger then.

  43. consolbob,

I don’t think the need to add another quality CB and a GK could be any more glaringly obvious, do you?

    - we have the need
    - we have the money

    so, what is the problem?

  44. YW…what’s with locking me out and not publishing my responses….LOL!

I thought I paid rent? My stuff is not being published….

  45. ConsolsBob…

How goes you down the west country? Long time….

  46. Cesc contributed 19 goals and 19 assists last season – can you see them coming from anyone else we currently have?

without Cesc we looked really ordinary this season, no wonder he wanted to go to Barca after carrying all the passengers we have…

  47. ROFL.

The Troll chooses to refer to a player called by both Johan Cruyff & Marco Van Basten as the most talented player of his generation (from his footballing ‘school’), as a ‘passanger’.

  48. Finsbury,

first of all: not a troll, just someone who happens to know his football and not agree with the opinion that we have enough to have a shot at any major silverware…

I thought otherwise last season, being reasonably happy with our squad, we choked in the end…

and please, learn to comprehend – I said Cesc carried all the passengers (i.e. Denilson, Diaby, etc.), gave his all, just to watch it all crumble thanks to the said passengers’ incompetence…

    and oh, learn to spell…

  49. A very good afternoon to you Darius.

Life is very good indeed her in the land of milk and honey. Yes, I’d noticed your absence. I trust that you had all necessary permisions?

  50. Hi CB, do you happen to know your football?

  51. OOU,

do you happen to be able to conduct a reasonable debate without taking cheap shots at your next man?

  52. Yes my friend CB…I had the full shabang of paperwork from the hiatus visa to the personal endemnity forms covering any damages.

I’m still having a bit of a re-entry problem trying to get into the rhythm of things but alas that will come in time for the new season.

It doesn’t seem much has changed though as Wenger and Arsenal’s transfer policy still seems to baffle many – but nonetheless, a brand new season with its highs and lows is something I’m desperately looking forward to.

  53. the manager’s job is to reduce the number of ‘lows’ by using the resources at his disposal, no?

  54. The 1 thing you didn’t factor in your ‘analyses’ Suga3 is your own cognitive limitations. You seem to be unaware that your own inability to resolve the issue in your mind does not prejudice the way the matter unfolds in real life.

  55. Don’t listen to him Sugar, it’s just the “pipe” talking.

  56. Ole,

without any prejudice, can you honestly say that :

    - our squad has improved, compared to last season
    - we have addressed the obvious shortcomings
    - we are not repeating the same mistakes (i.e. buying lightweight players to play in the league full of shitkickers)

    well?

  57. Can we honestly say that

    - your cognitive abilities have improved from last season
-you have addresses the obvious shortcomings to your worldview
    - you’re not repeating the same follies

    well?

  58. SUGA3 must be tired of talking back to himself and the like-minded retards at le groan he decided to repeat the same nonsense on this blog. “Stagnate.” Take a look at the age of arguably the key players in the top-three teams of last year who will be at the club for the 2010 season.
ManU: Van der Saar (39), Scholes (35), Giggs (36), Ferdinand (31), Rooney (24), Evra (29).
    Chelsea: Cech (28), Drogba (32), Lampard (32), Terry (29), Anelka (31), Malouda (30) Ivanovic (26), Cole (29)
    Arsenal: Almunia (33), Vermalean (24), Sagna (27), Cesc (23), Arshavin (29), Song (22), Clichy (24), Van Persie (26).

Which team has the balance of youth on their side? Undoubtedly, youth guarantees you nothing but 9 out of 10 times the younger team, when it sticks together and grows, it will achieve its potential.

Not that facts and patiently growing your team within your means matters to SUGA3 and his cabal of doomers.

  59. Ole,

I did not expect anything less from you…

‘Ad hominem’, also known as ‘argumentum ad hominem’ (Latin: ‘to the man’), is an attempt to link the validity of a premise to a characteristic or belief of the person advocating the premise. The ad hominem is a classic logical fallacy.

somehow, it’s me who can say ‘I told you so’, not you…

I don’t need to come up with anything new, as it’s all same ol’ problems…

  60. Petty argument is not going to contribute to this website any more..

I really feel that it isn’t a case of personnel.. when you see how small an amount of goals united conceded without a stable defence it shows that its work on the training ground that matters more than anything..

A keeper is necessary.. or more so than another defender if Sol doesn’t come in.

  61. Shotta,

I don’t give a fuck about ‘growing into the team’ if the ones that grow into it are not good enough in the first place…

I heard the same argument about age last season and we got dicked by both Chavs and ManYoo twice last season – where does that leave your ‘theory’?

and you could take a leaf out of LG book and try arguing your point without trying to insult me – do you think I give a shit?

it only exposes your argument and that is it…

  62. we need another defender regardless of whether Sol signs or not…

  63. suga3,

nice copy and paste work from wiki.

    you stupid c*nt.

  64. and to even compare VdS and Cech with Almunia is just hilarious…

  65. SUGA3,

You’re being very silly. I don’t want to have a honest debate on the facts when you’re saying stuff like “can we say we are stronger” based only on the idea of transfers, or that “players who grow into the team are not good enough” etc etc

    You’re talking allround rubbish

  66. notlager,

well, it’s the easiest way to find a definition of ‘ad hominem’, no?

why would I try to invent a fucking wheel?

and yes, ‘stupid cunt’ – what a waste of oxygen you are…

  67. Ole,

no, I am not – have we replaced Gallas? and please, don’t tell me that either of JD or LK are up to the task…

  68. suga3 another alias of Gunster-James?

  69. Nice to have you back Darius.

  70. SUGA,3 really. take the pipe 0ut 0f y0ur arse and and y0ur glass half empty and fuck 0ff
    u b0ring tit

  71. To even compare VdS & Cech with Almunia is hilarious

  72. no, dude, I am not – is it really beyond your comprehension that the number of supporters who are not happy with the way the things are is growing?

yes, AW pulled off a minor miracle by keeping us competitive on the budget he had, but now the short term financial obligations are no more and we are more than able to cut the dead wood and buy quality to be able to properly compete…

it’s a public info – Arsenal are a plc and publish their accounts every year…

  73. Why are we judging Koscielny before he’s even played a competitive game?

Ricardo Carvalho isn’t the most muscly of defenders but is regarded by many as a good defender. If anything.. surely he may compliment Thommy V as it would leave him to challenge for the first header, whilst Koscielny sweeps up behind him. By all accounts he has a great intelligence on the pitch, with good positional awareness. Give him a chance..

  74. Why do I bother? Two statements in your comment that highlight where you’re going wrong;

    1. You haven’t shown but merely told why JD or LK is not good enough.

    2. Not waited to see the final squad b4 making shallow and sweeping judgements

    3. Not shown that we need to replace Gallas

    4. Doing very childish Arithmetic…..assuming that if you sell one player you must buy another, which is the common rhetoric in football but is not actual practice since squad strength is analogous to a stock value and not a number. A squad of 100 is not necessarily stronger than a squad of 20.

  75. I am far from writing him off, really, however, he is just not in the same bracket as Billy G.

yes, he has good vision and eye for the pass, but I would not exactly say he has a very good positional sense – both recent games may suggest otherwise and it was only Barnet ans Sturm Graz…

as for Carvalho, he is a completely different player – small and sturdy, more of TV than LK, IMO…

  76. Fuck off, supporters who are unhappy. Fuck right off. Off to support the chavs will suit me just fine personally.

  77. Equation: Wenger’s opinion > Suga3′s follies.

    QED

  78. Ole,

each to his own – IMO, if we go into the season with the squad we have now, we will concede more goals than we did in the last…

JD’s fitness is questionable, to say the least and he is not the most assured and experienced player we need – for me, he is just a clumsy big lump, squad player…

Koscielny is lightweight, I saw him being outmuscled by the oppo player a few times in just two games against the opposition that was not top notch, whatever you say…

yes, squad of 100 will not necesarily do better than a squad of 20, but if the quality will be close enough, I’d say it will happen more often than not due to fatigue, injuries, etc.

and given that we have the money to spend, dragging the transfers for ages is just stupid – the need is there, the money is there, wham-bam-thank you ma’am, done!

we were able to attract good players being relatively smaller club than we are now financially…

  79. Ole,

    Wenger’s last year’s delusions < Suga3's last year's predictions

    how's that?

  80. Ole,

suga3 is just a wind up merchant that’s all.
    Not difficult to see.

I hope to see something similar to what Vital Arsenal did today. Cleaning up the site from trolls.

  81. and for once, try bringing your point across in a civilised way – so far, you have not presented a single valid argument to prove that I am talking out of my arse…

  82. If your last statement is true, I bow to you, and I hand you the mantle of Arsenal manager. I’ll look for a big office for you so you can hang all the majpor trophies you’ve won.

    Moron.

  83. repetitive and ann0ying. try supp0rting and n0t be s0 anti arsenal 0r g0 away

  84. notlager,

I know. Read my first comment. I don’t take him seriously because he doesn’t even realise how silly he is.

  85. notlager,

I am not a WUM, I just try to make a convo with my fellow Gooners, hoping that they will help me to understand the error of my ways and that sun does indeed shine out of Our Glorious Leader’s arse…

so far, I have only encountered tools like yourself who can only call other people names…

jog on to your sandbox you twat…

  86. Life doesn’t run on your opinions.

  87. Ole
Your patience with these sad deluded idiots whose idea of fun is to come to another teams blogsite and start an argument staggers me. Good for you. If you can’t ignore them make them look as stupid as possible.
Why do SOl and SUGA only really show at this stage of preseason? Is it because when we’re actually winning the majority of our matches and challenging on all fronts it makes it harder? When we aren’t playing and the transfer window is open still it makes it easier to claim Wenger has lost the plot perhaps?
I don’t know. It’s sad that there isn’t an exam before you are allowed to post. Democracy is so flawed, imagine idiots like SUGA actually have the vote. Or will when they reach 18.

  88. Ole,

Wenger said we could win stuff and to judge him in May, so I only do what he asked me to

we did fuck all in the winter TW, which resulted in playing Silvestre (not even a CB and Senderos pisses all over him) against Barca!

not to mention going into the business end of the season with one half-fit nominal CF (Bendy)…

seems like some Spud got it spot on about you lot:

    bored now…

  89. james mc daid

suga3,dont waste your time with Arsenes ass boys.

  90. steww,

no mate, I am on here all year, not too often, as one can’t just have one’s own opinion on here…

  91. yawn….

  92. run along now SUGA3…….

  93. steww,

and do you seriously think that it’s me who looks ‘stupid’?

    hahahahahahaha…

  94. whenever I feel like it, Ole…

good job YW has more decency than Tony Attwood and promotes debate…

  95. and do you seriously think that it’s me who looks ‘stupid’?

    Yes

  96. You call this debate? You wouldnt know debate if it was dripping out your willy.

  97. Ole
would you ever consider going to a Spurs site and trying to wind them up over and over again? Can you imagine?

  98. why would you go to a Spurs site?

are you implying that I am a Spud?

wash your mouth with soap, son…

  99. Oh dear – now we have to have the ‘who’s the biggest and bestest Arsenal fan debate’ yawn zzzzzzz

  100. fuck me, we are all Gooners, we all want what in our opinion is the best for the club – I hope we can agree on that much?

  101. Steww, I certainly couldnt imagine it

  102. ….yawn

  103. go to sleep, Ole, you may need it – it may help with these delusions, you never know, it may be all down to sleep deprivation?

  104. Ole,

there was a sp*d troll who used the same tactics whenever he logged on Vital Arsenal: derail any meaningful discussion and wind up people. He was banned today. Now suga3 is here, posting sp*d video clips.

Ignor him, he’s a sad loser.

  105. I think it would be great if Gallas stayed. He’s a proven, veteran defender who had a very good partnership with Vermaelen. So what if he is 33. Centerbacks don’t need to be the fastest in the world, just able to read the game and be tough and good at distribution. Vermaelen is the younger version of Sol so we’ve got that already. If Gallas stays then we’ve got the extra CB we needed locked up in Kosc and Sol provides some cover too. That makes 4 CBs that are quite good, IMO, and some young guns who can be blooded too. A good position to be in.

SUGA3…it’s ok to have a moan if you want but having a moan on here will only get you what you deserve.

  106. now where was the ‘meaningful discussion’ I have allegedly ‘derailed’?

having checked the thread, you have not contributed one bit – fact!

and I am a Gooner, you little turd – the only difference between us is that I am not happy with the lack of ambition to challenge properly and the ‘third place is like a trophy’ crap spouted by Our Glorious Leader…

    as I said, sandbox beckons…

  107. GG,

Gallas said he would not accept one year deal and lower wages (which would be only fair, given hit fitness record in the last 2 seasons), thinking he is still Billy Big Bollocks and that the offers will come flying in left, right and centre…

great pro he may be, but I don’t want a fella with his character staying around with his tail between his legs as it’s a blow to his winning mentality IMO…

as you look at my first few posts, I tried to be civil, without winding anyone up, voiced my opinion and all I got was a barrage of abuse – nothing new, it’s all about one’s level…

  108. Since we all agree that we need another solid and PROVEN CB, who do you guys have in mind?

  109. Come to think of it, wouldn’t it be great if Djourou is the answer all along? If he pulls through i’ll be ecstatic.

  110. PA,

    - Mertesacker
    - Zapata (youngish but a beast)
    - Servet Cetin (Drogba said he was a nightmare to play against)

    all within our reach…

  111. Suga3.. I think where the gulf in the fans comes is in the desperation for transfers and the immediate fortune that they perceive to bring.

Correct me if i’m wrong, but it feels as if you consider success or failure to be dependant on whether we make certain tranfers, which is all well and good. I don’t disagree that a keeper needs to be bought, or we go with Chesney and accept that he will need time to bed himself in.

I think to say that we lack ambition is false though. We’ve made two new signings in positions that had to be remedied. The window hasn’t shut yet, it still has a month to go. It’s obvious the gaffer is trying to sort these problems out but all transfers are going to take a while as we don’t have the unrestricted finance that City and Chelsea do to just slap down an over-inflated offer for the selling club to snap up.

If Sol comes in, we have to trust Wengers judgement on Kos which is going to be better than ours after two friendly games. What we must hope for more than anything is to have less injuries than last season.. wishful thinking may be but last seasons injury crisis can’t be duplicated surely.

  112. Piresaholic,

Very tough question. I’d go for Dani Agger, though he’s young. I personally think if Sol doesnt sign, we’ll need a defender who’s experienced in both PL & CL. If Sol stays, just an experienced campaigner. I like the idea of Mertesacker but do wonder why he’s playing for a lowly club. I like Naldo the Werder Bremen defender. Zapata is very like Gallas but he’s young.

  113. Piresaholic,

Djourou is a class defender. He’s coming back from a long injury, and is still youngish….I think we need to add experience to the mix especially at centre back more than anywhere else.

  114. There are rumours from Arsenal fans at our training camp in Austria that “Arsene is staying behind in Bad Waltersdorf for a day or two after Arsenal leave because Werder Bremen are in town next and he is looking at Mertesacker or Ozil.”

I heard Mertesacker is an Arsenal fan and he had a really good WC. He can read the game well but he’s slow and his distribution is not very good. I think this was one of the reasons why Germany lost to Spain in the end. I rather Arsene would look elsewhere for an experienced CB. Who he should buy I have no idea.

  115. it’s all about improving the balance of probabilities, that’s all…

I am forming my opinion based on the facts as they are at the moment:

    - we conceded way too many goals last season
    - we got rid of our arguable best defender and brought in an unknown
    - we still have the same GKs

as for Szczesny – I love the fella and I predict him to be our no.1 for a decade, but he is not quite there yet IMO…

  116. Germany lost to Spain in exactly the same manner we lost to Barca: Spain were hunting in packs, Germans could not string three passes together, no?

I would like PM to come, as he is way better than any of JD, LK and the ones further down the pecking order…

  117. ………..didn’t he go on……………………….and on.

  118. @SUGA3
So I guess you have watched every Ligue 1 match of Koscielny to be able to form such a thorough opion on his abilities? And you have obviously watched all of Mertesackers games in the Bundesliga, too.
Or did you just turn on Footie Manager and compare the attributes of the two? To me, latter seems more likely the case.

  119. Suga,

Your arguments are simplistic and ignore too many pieces needed to make a proper argument.

How can you call moving from a 38,000 seater stadium to a 60,000 seater a ‘lack of ambition’?

You say we need this and need that but do you think all these things are so easy to acquire? Man City aside, who else is splashing the cash?

You talk as if all we need to do to win is buy buy buy but even if every team in the Prem had £100m to spend there would still be only one winner, so no matter how much we spend or who we buy there will be no guarantees. That, quite simply, is the nature of sport.

You speak as if the concept of improving through training does not exist.

For me, watching this young team grow has been an exciting experience, spoiled only slightly by the continuous whining of people like yourself.

You are unfortunately just another product of this “me me ME!” world we live in today so I can’t completely blame you for your rather childish views. Still, its rather annoying to have to put up with them.

  120. To be honest we can do without buying a new GK (I hate to say this) but I can deal with Almunia at the sticks but the least we can do is put a solid defense infront of him, in terms of ability and more importantly execution. Like nash has mentioned, more work has to be done on the training ground than anything. We need various players to step up a level just like Song did last season and make the position their own.

    My choices for CB are/were:

    Kjaer (gone to Hamburg)
    Bruno Alves (Impressive)

We need us a Lucio/Vidic type of player, no nonsense and CONSISTENT. If our team reaches defensive stability nothing can stop us. We always manage to score but we always end up having to outscore our opponents or chase games, we have to eradicate this as it just adds more unnecessary pressure to our budding team i.e the more we get results the less people unjustly bash players like Denilson et al.

Back to the CB issue, it just goes to show how much there is a lack of true quality our there that we cant even muster up a solid top 5 target list that are of assured quality. I truly think Wenger is the type to spend big if he see’s the perfect fit (Arshavin, Nasri even) but i’m guessing the market is really fucked up this year. I have a sneaky feeling were gna have a last day transfer a la Diarra that will improve our title aspirations drastically. Might even be Gallas resigning which I don’t mind one bit. Its obvious the man has an ego problem but I think this will be more of a benefit than a detriment to our chances. Also, he’s been there and done that with this team which sure as hell beats getting someone new in and having to wait and hope they settle in just as good as Vermy did.

  121. ah bless…………he’s lonely………

  122. Hear, hear goonerwife! Particularly this:

“For me, watching this young team grow has been an exciting experience, spoiled only slightly by the continuous whining of people like yourself.”

    My sentiments exactly!

  123. Spot on, goonerwife..

  124. @Gooner wife and Passenal

Its great to be an Arsenal fan isn’t it. Every season a rush better the the one before.

  125. goonerwife – post of the day.

  126. goonerwife,

no, it is not ‘simplistic’ – you can’t disagree that buying proven quality is more likely to get you results than trying to train players with about 50/50 chance of making it at the top and for the young players to mature and learn, they need players to learn from…

building a new, great stadium (IMO, probably one of the best in Europe at the moment) was indeed a good idea, which was supposed to enable us to compete with the top teams – for the past two seasons, we have been put in place by them nearly each and every time we played one of them, with ManYoo and Barca games being particularly embarrassing…

    EF,

Mertesacker – full German international, almost 70 caps, seen enough of him to tell he is quality…

Koscielny – Ligue 2 two seasons ago, almost snapped up by Poland, now probably will be capped by Blanc just to ‘keep him French’

fuck Champoinship Manager, you don’t need that to be able to say that much…

  127. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isnt the defender we all need is one in a ‘sweeper’ role and not the one who goes for the first ball?? In my opinion, We are good in that segment with TV5, JD6 & Bartley (and Sol if he signs)!!! TV5 can play as a sweeper as well but he likes going for the first ball. Kos & Nordtveit are sweepers and in my opinion Wenger is going after such a player..

  128. ……….thats i,o not o,i…………

  129. ‘You talk as if all we need to do to win is buy buy buy but even if every team in the Prem had £100m to spend there would still be only one winner, so no matter how much we spend or who we buy there will be no guarantees. That, quite simply, is the nature of sport.’

    - everyone but ManCity and us (obviously, not the same scale) is skint
    - they buy like there is no tomorrow
    - we leave the shortcomings of the squad unaddressed

it’s will never be a level playing field, sugar, deal with it – thought we have a massive income? why not use it?

  130. @SUGA3

And now compare to Vermaelen. ;)

  131. ad nauseum

  132. trevor hill,

    yawn…

  133. Piresaholic, I guess Arsene has to weigh up the pro’s of Gallas – PL experienced defender, still has good pace and reading of the game and knows the Arsenal set up so would not require a settling in period. Versus the con’s – a miserable b, who does not get on with many of his team mates and therefore is potentially a divisive influence in the dressing room. I also wonder if his difficulties have contributed to the problems on the pitch as he has failed to be vocal and take charge of organising the defense on the pitch.

  134. compare who to TV? Koscielny or Mertesacker?

TV – captain of Ajax (for short time, I know), an international, played in Erdevisie for what, 6 years?

    the other two, as above…

  135. ug 3………. this time eh, but not b4.
    mmmmhhh. distasteful.

  136. Fucking Man City…bought Kolarov for 14 million…bastards are inflating the market bigtime. Now Zapata and Mertesacker are going to be magically priced at 16 million and above, madness.

  137. well, boohoo, now we may need to spend a bit more…

however, I don’t think we will have to – it’s not like City will buy him as well just for the sake of it, is it?

    trevor,

care to elaborate? or are you a bot?

  138. On, and on, and on, and on, and on…
    Boring troglodyte.
Soon you will realize the futility of the wind up and go back to your spiritual home, le groan.

It happens every year. Pre-season they predict doom and gloom if there are no big new shiny signings.
Well Manchester City spent most money last year followed closely by Spurs and both won fuck-all.
Predictably we go on a flying start and they fall quiet, sniping from their redoubt at you know where.
The 1st setback, injuries or youthful inconsistency that had nothing to do with their fabled new signings, and they return with the same b.s.
    Do they ever learn?

  139. Brilliant choice Steww! Good old Ivor. Genius. Sadly missed.

  140. Thanks Harry. I was lucky enough to see him perform once.
    Nothing wrong with being happy!

  141. SUGA3 is not just simplistic but outright stupid. Every single comment so far. Amazing. It’s as if JonJon and James had a hybrid clone of them made.

  142. ug good u can spell bot. but then u would need 2 b able 2. you called it b4. but not 4 u. ur unpleasant.

  143. Shotta,

it’s only a windup if you get wound up for no good reason at all, seriously, it’s not my objective…

and you seem to be missing a point here:

    - you don’t spend and carry on with aiming for the coveted ‘third place trophy’
    - you take a risk and you IMPROVE (note to you: not equal to GUARANTEE) your chances of snatching the title

is that simple enough for you, or should I spell it in fucking capitals?

  144. latest friendly round up:

    Ajax – Chelsea : 3-1
    Sporting Lissabon – Manchester City : 2-0

A little bit surprised, but you can’t read too much into friendlies. I think Chelsea’s lineup was very youthful due to most of their regulars still resting from the WC or are injured.

  145. Ole,

how typical – just because I don’t agree with you (and all the facts and records prove that you are talking out of your arse), does it make me stupid?

now that’s an interesting theory – did you come up with that ALL by yourself?

    impressive…

  146. do you miss Vital Arsenal suga-spud?

  147. oh fuck off SUGA3………

  148. SUGA3 @ 2.06pm.

Entirely agree with you about argumentum ad hominem . Though, on balance, it’s probably more entertaining than argumentum ad nauseam .

And if you crave the satisfaction of being able to say “I told you so”, just go on to the blogs of all the other EPL teams and say “with this team we’ve no chance of winning the league”. You’ll be happy because you’ll be right so many times and we’ll be happy because we’ll be spared the tedium.

    Credit where it’s due . . . . . . . .

  149. ug where i live its late. more correctly early ( in the morning ) i live near lots and lots of clever people now. we’r all very bored, bored, bored by u. we r off 2 the beach 2 watch the sun rise. please please dont cum back. ur pathetic cry 4 attention has been heard and 4gotten.

  150. merlot,

matter of opinion, I guess – still probably more entertaining that ‘I agree with Ole’

and no, I don’t crave the satisfaction from our team failing to win stuff due to Our Glorious Leader being stubborn and not accepting that he can get it wrong every now and then…

what I crave is success (not in a glory-hunting way) or at least to see the fight to the end, which is not what we saw @ Wigan (Wigan, for fuck’s sake) for example – I expect a lot from myself, which gives me a God given right to expect a lot from those around me, simple as…

  151. So, um,

Diaby is a PASSENGER according to the troll/football expert?

Let’s look at this Diaby guy play some football, shall we?

Wow, I mean watching that, it’s obvious how this PASSENGER got the MOTM award against WC semi finalists, Uruguay.

  152. And there’s more:

    Stevie who?

  153. What is a PASSENGER?

I believe goals 1, 2 and 4 for Germany are fairly conclusive:

Captain of the champions, John Terry, Captain, Leader, Legend.

Unless, the above was on purpose, as some have suggested?

  154. Finsbury,

    Diaby moves along certain pattern:

great game -> two-three shit games -> injury -> return from injury -> shit game -> great game -> a few shit games -> injury

and what does a YT video prove exactly? getting MOTM playing for France in this WC, was indeed no mean feat, and Gerrard and Pool were pretty lame this season…

  155. don’t give him a life-line, Finsbury.

  156. Terry is a fucking classless overrated chav cunt – it’s Carvalho that made him look good: English players got exposed for what they are (cloggers with no technical ability, only looking good with a bunch of Johnny Foreigners around to serve it on the plate) in this WC big time…

  157. see what i mean……. very jolly. gotta go………

  158. last year we was closer then close.but we werent as close as the season before when we was really closer then close. although i think we can be even closer then our closest of close seasons.

  159. Duke

I was close to understanding that one but not as close as on previous occasions.

    YW

  160. 12:47 to 5:05, Jesus Christ, Yogi!
    Enough of that fool.

  161. This is troll feeding on an epic scale guys, you all should know better!

  162. troll feeding, eh?

try a reasonable debate for once…

  163. Every time I walked into the room throughout the day, I smelled something and walked straight out.

  164. well, perhaps you should wash more often then? you can easily fail to notice your own stench outdoors, no?

fuck me, this is too easy…

  165. WE ARE SIGNING THE FOLLOWING:

    Zapata – 13 million
    Given – 15 million
De Rossi – Denilson going to Roma + 15 million
Honda – Rosicky going CSKA + 5 million
    Campbell – Free

ALMUNIA IS GOING TO OSASUNA, FABIANSKI IS LEAVING AS WELL

  166. steady Vince he’s hugely entertaining. Bill Hicks
used to be my favourite comedian. Mingus – see if you can get him to talk about the meaning of life. Cant wait

  167. here boy, here boy. what do you think about the, er, meaning of life.

  168. still – I wonder if SUGA works in advertising. We all know what Bill would say to him if he did.

  169. Suga for you

  170. One can only dream Steww

  171. towering, Steww, towering. but i dont think he’ll get it. i think we will still have to explain. thanks for the clip. Bill is always welcome. and if ARSENAL ever need any spiritual guidance………
    now theres a thought.

  172. dream on…

and the meaning of life is:

    - supporting Arsenal
    - washing more often

    sad fuckers…

  173. welcome back suga. enjoy your bone. now, do you have anything else you can tell us ?

  174. no, I’m bored with you lot and you may struggle to chew through the info on meaning of life subject already…

and you do realise that what you are doing is called trolling, yes?

  175. aw suga, your losing it. that wasn’t so funny. where is the banter. c’mon now, try harder. honest, your good at it.

  176. SUGA BORED SUGA GO BACK TO LE CAVE NOW SUGA NOT LIKE TRY TALK WITH CLEVER PEOPLE

  177. suga, dont go.

  178. deliver us from evil. i think suga, yes suga, has left us. the end is nigh =- what shall we do. suaga please come back.

  179. pray lord and countanance of your time suga you missed it. thicko.

  180. and i gave u a clue. thicko

  181. learn to spell, maybe one of those ‘lots and lots of clever people you live near’ may help?

  182. ah. jolly good. i knew u cud do it. yes we are all hugely entertained.

  183. please feel free 2 say more

  184. So here’s the problem. Most people agree that in an ideal world we would have another right-sided CB (eg.Cahill, Mertsacker) to partner Vermaelen for most of the season and a stomping DM (eg. Inler, Melo) to support Song when needed. The majority of people also would like to see a temporary experienced keeper to fill the gap until Szcesny is fully ready to be our regular #1.

Failing that, perhaps a right-sided CB who can also fill a role if needed in DM, (see Toure, Ya Ya) would be just fine. But in a market where Milner is priced at 30 million and Ya Ya went for 24 million, there’s no wonder why it’s taking Arsene a little time to get his man or men.

What we do know is that we have a squad that can consistently beat teams 6-20 in the league. The addition or additions are what might be needed to get us consistently beating our main rivals, which was our shortfall last season. There’s no harm in recognizing this, and even if we didn’t add, I still think that we can stay in the Top 4 with what we have.

My guess is Arsene will spend some meaningful money (10-15 million) on a solid CB and will rotate Diaby and Denilson when needed. It will secure a Top 4 spot and maybe a cup trophy, which is all we can realistically expect until we are debt-free and truly cash rich.

  185. LAGooner,

    good post, that…

  186. suga, and you said u was bored with us. ur a little tease.

  187. yes, I m bored with you, but the single voice of reason cannot go unnoticed

spelling, grammar, comprehension – your clever neighbours have their work cut out…

  188. oh fuck. now i really do have 2 go. sugar, bless. such hilarity.

  189. that should b punctuation. thicko. bye

  190. why thank you Suga3…

  191. LAGooner,

I would be happy if we signed Mertesacker and Schwarzer, really – I don’t demand results at all costs, but I want to see everyone at the club (especially AW) making the effort to address the problems ;)

yes, EFFORT is the key word for me – what we saw during the ‘easiest run in’ was not it, was it?

  192. Morons like Suga would absolutely shit themselves if they were given even a fifth of Wenger’s responsibilities. They think that just buying a player will solve all their problems and they can sleep soundly at night.

  193. Here’s where we part ways, SUGA3.

I think the run-in problems were a consequence of injuries in key positions to important players.

I think in general the players worked hard during the season against some tough odds, and even with the bad run-in, we still finished above expectations. Last season also told us some important things for our long-term planning:

    1. Vermaelen will be a leader on this team for at least another 8 years.

    2. Ramsey has what it takes, recovery permitting, to replace Cesc as our dynamic midfield force

    3. Song is now a top-quality DM

    4. Wilshere showed he could mix it up on a week to week basis.

    5. Bendtner showed he can bounce back after a poor showing and is a threat to any team given support.

    6. We have a young Polish keeper in the wings who could quite possibly become the best keeper in the World. This was evident from some spectacular on-loan performances.

    7. Clichy showed signs of regaining his confidence and there’s not much more exciting than seeing him anticipate a pass, intercept and storm into the opponent’s half.

Walcott, Denilson, Diaby and to a lesser extent Nasri didn’t make huge leaps last season, but one or two of these players will shine this season.

It all still looks very, very good for the future!

  194. LAGooner,

IMO, this could and should have been avoided by short term purchases or loans – winter TW passed, we had Bendy as our only ‘fit’ striker (20 minutes under his belt since coming back from injury) and Gallas not lasting the distance was pretty much a given…

apart from that, I agree with all your points (well, not too sure about Rambo’s recovery, but hey)…

  195. Well, we also had Arshavin and Eduardo, but Arsene did take a little risk in order to snap up Chamakh on a free this summer.

Let’s not forget that at CB we were very well covered after January with Gallas, Vermaelen, Campbell, Song and Silvestre all available despite Djourou’s injury.

Fingers crossed on Rambo, no doubt…

  196. still, allowing the situation where Silvestre (a LB by trade, mind you) is played as CB against probably the best team in the world was unacceptable…

I wouldn’t consider Song a CB, he was our only DM fit to wear the shirt back then IMO…

and it is just not possible for your first choice CB pairing to last the full season with games coming thick and fast – gamble with TV, certain fail with Gallas…

and that leaves us with playing Campbell and Silvestre week in week out at the business end of the season…

  197. NOTW say we are after the Holland keeper and Cesc will stay for ONE more year

The Mail say Jagielka bid of £15m

  198. I put that down to bad luck. You can’t have 4 world-class CBs without two of them being very unhappy for much of the season. Think about who Chelsea had after Carvalho and Terry (only Alex) and United really only have 3 classy CBs (Ferdinand, Vidic and Evans).

  199. the difference between Arsene and “I’ll bankrupt the Spuds before I’m through” Harry:

Redknapp stressed: “How we do next season depends on who I get in. If I sign a few players then anything can happen, but if I don’t it’s going to be hard just to maintain what we did last year.

“It’s very important because it’s a massive opportunity and we have to grab it.

“This is a chance Tottenham really shouldn’t waste now because we’ve got ourselves in our best position since the Premier League started and we have to build on that.

“We now have to move forward and not take a step back and sit and look at what we have done, so I feel it’s a great opportunity for us.”

  200. How about this for a penalty.

Shame about the dive to get it though.

  201. If wishes were horses all beggars would ride.
That is the fuck-up thing about Ifs. Any fool and moron can point to success at Arsenal use of the almighty If. No wonder SUGA is so fucking boring.

  202. 1 loose cannon

Fabregas is staying put and Iniesta changed his tune as they finally realised Arsenal will not be fooled around easily. He said:

“Cesc wants to be with us, but he told me how close the Arsenal fans are to his heart,” said Iniesta.

“He is a special player and I hope he wins the title at Arsenal this season.

“For them to win Cesc will have to stay fit and injury-free but he deserves to finish with a title.

That is settled then and it won’t be good news for the Spuds who according to Del Boy Arry will win the title, You just watch the Spuds turn into mash this season

  203. But 1lc, he also said this:

It would be brilliant if Arsenal’s hero could lift the title as captain during his last season.

    Just another Barca twat.

  204. Sorry to bring this up, but one of the Spanish rags is saying that Cesc has already agreed a “hypothetical contract” with Barcelona. It’s all difficult to prove of course, but it makes you wonder what Barcelona have to do to get some kind of reprimand from UEFA.

  205. OOU

What’s a hypothetical contract when its at home? Either they’ve agreed terms or they haven’t. As for action by Uefa or Fifa, nothing will happen without Arsenal making the appropriate noises, something they are not going to do as the player and his representatives get punished as well for encouraging a breach of contract. It might happen if Barcelona stump up the cash but otherwise, nada.

    Anyway, new post up.
