Cesc Feels The Love, Campbell Feels The Way, Technology & Transfer Talk

Spain did not need Cesc last night to beat Portugal, David Villa providing the obligatory offside goal. Still, if he thinks Vincent del Bosque doesn’t love him, he knows that Arsenal fans do, the Spaniard winning the Player of the Season award by a comfortable margin, 27% ahead of Thomas Vermaelen.

To the disappointment of the Spanish media, Wenger was commentating on the match last night but the pair meeting up never happened with Arsene now officially a ‘hack’, using the tradesman’s entrance to get into the ground whilst beforehand, Cesc was 300m from the media, warming up. Arsene also refused to comment on the tedious activities of Barcelona.

Back to the Player of the Year award. The order was probably correct but the inclusion of Robin van Persie highlights the distinctly ordinary form of the rest of the squad towards the backend of the season. It would be interesting to see how much of the vote Sol Campbell received, possibly the best indicator of that.

Sepp Blatter has apologised as convincingly as Tony Hayward to FA and the Mexicans for poor officiating standards in the Round of 16 clashes over the weekend. Two good things might emerge. Firstly, England’s 2018 bid will no doubt garner some sympathy votes when push comes to shove but even Blatter has now admitted that technology is back on the agenda.

There is a place for goal-line technology in the game, the quickness of the decision over the ball’s position in relation to the goal is no hinderance to the flow of the match. However for offside and other decisions, the flow of the game is such that to implement technology is extremely difficult. An easier way to resolve that particular issue would be simplification of the Laws of the Game.

Poor positional sense by the official last night allowed David Villa’s goal to count when it should have been ruled out, something that can only be solved by improved standards. However, there is some light with regards to offside ‘goals’ as replays could be inspected whilst celebrations continue, the screens in most big stadia would allow the replay to be shown to quell anger which is of concern to Fifa.

Blatter has argued spuriously, that football at the top should be the same as amateur. That is never going to happen, especially with fourth and more officials on the agenda. There are enough problems finding referees for matches in Sunday leagues without the added pressure of finding three more to stand behind goals and manage the managers.

The role of the fourth official has long been open to different interpretations. Some countries allow him to meddle more than others; it is time for that to be standardised. Replay-watcher-in-Chief is a good starting point.

As England’s World Cup woes fade into the background, waiting for a quieter day, the transfer talk ups the pace with more stories and linkage to the fore. First up is Madjid Bougherra, the Algerian international who kept Wayne Rooney quiet in South Africa. Not that it took much as the United striker was determined to show just how badly a pub player would cope at the highest level.

Simon Kjaer has lots of admirers around Europe, Arsene reportedly among them. Not that he has done anything about it. As with the Cole saga, Spurs are in the driving seat having reportedly lodged a €35m bid with Palermo for Kjaer and Cavani although no-one has bothered to tell the Dane’s Mr20%, which strikes me as a fundamental flaw in the process.

Kjaer may yet become more prominent in Arsene’s attentions as Sol Campbell has reportedly been looking around Celtic’s facilities, seemingly serious intent on both parties to conclude a deal. Newcastle are reportedly waiting in the wings.

He may yet stay at Arsenal but will the prospect of  being a coach on the pitch appeal to him? It might as that was one of the selling points in his ill-fated spell at Notts County. One can only hope that Kjaer shakes the Danish debacle against Japan out of his system should he join.

Meanwhile, not joining Arsenal this summer is Mario Balotelli according his Mr20%. The player is currently studying for his exams having successfully passed his police entrance exam. Entrance to the local nick that is, following an incident where he fired a toy gun in a Milanese plaza at the weekend.

Equally convincing in the ‘missing the Arsenal boat’ this summer is Loic Remy whose club, Nice, rejected an approach from West Ham. The suitcase stuffed full of Euros was too light for the French club’s tastes, only €9.5m crammed in. However, should the West Ham laundry lady iron them nicely, it is believed that they will be able to cram in a few more. Still, that won’t be enough for Remy who only wants to play for Arsenal or Nice. Which is nice.

Actually, that is not so fanciful as Eduardo has apparently told his agent he wants to leave Arsenal with Aston Villa reportedly enquiring about his availability whilst Newcastle wanting Arsenal starlet, Sol Campbell, no wait, sorry, it’s Henri Lansbury on loan, as well. Oh, and Bolton want Jack Wilshire back but they’ve been saying that for months.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Will take 2nd for BB

  2. I think it’s going to be easy for Simon Kjær to shake of the Danish debacle against Japan, because he didn’t play due to suspension. Had he played, I think, that result had been quite different.

Hopefully Wenger signs Kjær, he’ll certainly help to improve our defensive record…

  3. Surely by now Fabrigas should have realized going to Barca isnt good for him, He cant even make the first 11 for Spain and seeing as most of the players are from Barca he will continue to warm the bench there but at Arsenal he is always guaranteed a place.

Was on Portugal’s side last night but if they had gotten anything than a loss yesterday, spain would have felt hard done by as they were the better team.Couldnt stand the commentator who kept referring to spain as Barca every 10mins.

On matters goalkeeper, I was pretty impressed by Edwardo of Portugal. He looks pretty solid, so much better than all those we have been rumored to have an interest in.

  4. I liked Portugal’s keeper a lot yesterday, commanding his area and great saves! He’s only 27 and plays for a Portuguese club still, hopefully Wenger spotted him.

About Wenger/Cesc: I saw the game on TF1 and Wenger wasn’t commenting last night, but interestingly the french commentators said at some point something like “and on the bench this is Fabregas the Arsenal player, who is courted by Barcelona, but Wenger wants to keep his best player as he told us just hours ago, and he’s damn right”.

  5. Cesc would be stupid to leave Arsenal now, at least he should stay a year or two until Xavi becomes an “Old Phart” then he can walk into the team with a guaranteed place.
    ===

From now on, I decided to call Sepp Blatter, Sick Bladder.

  6. He is off

    get use to it

  7. Great words Archer, short, but pointless.

  8. Sell Cesc now!!! no point letting him stay given that we know he will leave in a year or two. Why not just sell him now and give the playmaker role to Ramsey permenantly!!!

Wilshere would definitely be capable of taking up that role as well!!

Sell Cesc and in turn concentrate on tightening the defence. We need another CB (other than Koscielny, whom we have already signed), and another capable Defensive midfielder to partner/deputise Song. These 2 are our current problems!!

Schwarzer should be coming and we would have solved our GK problems!!

    Sell Eduardo, Cesc, Denilson!!!!!!!

  9. Said this so often I think I will get myself a Winchester repeater repeater repeater. Maybe Balotelli has one he can offload to me. CESC IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON. GET USED TO IT AICHER!

  10. I think one has to admire Sepp Blatter. After all, who would have imagined that the young admirer of female thighs would go on to become the most powerful man in football?

  11. @Gunner4Ever Thanks :)

  12. Any time Bb.

  13. Not starting in spain first eleven could even make cesc wanna go to barca more. he knows that if he can get a place in the starting eleven in barca then he would be guaranteed a first team shirt for spain.

and to everybody who thinks cesc would bench at barca, you are delirious. they would find a way to accomadate him and show the spanish team how to use him also

but i pray none of these happens, becuz i love our little captain. hope he would be here next season

  14. Damn_Gallas

    stop shouting!!!

…and stop trying to play championship manager, I thought Arsenal fans were past being childish?

Wenger won’t listen to you no matter how many esclamation marks you put also ;) so save your energy

  15. jeff

I believe that also, he is good enough to push Xavi and Iniesta for a starting place. Age will very much count against him there though as well as reputation, he would certainly play second fiddle for much of the games if he went.

I don’t think Cesc can handle that, as much as he would push for a 1st team place there. You can see his frustration while doing it for Spain, he just won’t have that. Warming the bench is no place for such a great player, and football needs a player like Cesc on the pitch – the Emirates pitch.

CESC is going nowhere. How many times must we go over this?

  16. Damn_gallas

u should be damn as ur name suggest. Jst becus cesc would leave someday means we should sell now becos barca says so? Get a life. Wenger knws what he’s doing thats why he’s in charge not you. I wonder how you manage on daily dealings

  17. I was extremely dissapointed with Portugal, Spain/Barca held the ball far too easily. Creating very little, and scoring an offside goal. Paraguay are serious underdogs for the next game, I have my fingers crossed they cause an upset.

  18. yea right jeff!like they are going to bench Xavi and Iniesta to play Fabrigas

  19. I haven’t been impressed by Spain at all so far. Peek-a-boo Busquets has been useless; La Muchacha has been worse than useless; Pique looks like he needs to loosen his corset a couple of notches; and Capdevila is a liability. Even Gomez Addams, who we are taught to admire, has not stood out.

  20. Villa has got Spain on his shoulders…as long as those shoulders don’t buckle they’ll do ok until they meet Brazil.

Brazil to win, they are the most complete team

Cesc will stay for at least one more season

  21. kjaer would be a very good addition, but i would still love to see campbell spend one more season. he has a comanding presence and he’s a leader!!! very important!!
goalkeeper problem solved with schwarzer because Szczensy would be our number 1 for years to come :)

i have no problem with Joe Cole coming as arsenal usually suffer a crap load of injurries!!

with respect to fabregas, i would love to see him stay atleast one more year, but if he is sold, we should be able to acquire gourcuff and yaya toure easily plus with a little extra cash.

    Joe Cole-free
    Chamack-free
    Laurent- 8.5mil
    schwarzer- 3.5mil
    Kjaer- 12mil

likely possibilities (gourcuff 21mil, yaya toure-trade)

    out:
    Almunia- 4mil
    Fabianski-3.5mil
    Eduardo- 7.5mil
    Gallas- free

    Possibility (fabregas-45mil plus yaya toure)

  22. The latest offer from Barcelona is £50m or £60m plus Yaya Toure. There are rumours that Barcelona are willing to go up to £70m if Arsenal promise to play Yaya whenever they meet Barcelona in Europe.

  23. Show this to Fabregas to snap some sense into him.

  24. Eduardo will only be 4th choice striker if he stays.Sell him

  25. Goonerpower and hark aren’t good enough to support Arsenal. sell sell.

  26. commercial locks

Yaya has signed for man city plus he don’t want to play for us anyways

  27. That comeback was classic.. I remember thinking to myself at 2-2 that Van Persie should have won it for us with his late chances.. then little Cescy pops up. Quality game, not good on the heart though!

  28. Is it bad to have a fourth striker given our injuries? I wud prefer eduardo over any youth reserves for now. Ease them gradualy in 1st team. This season for me is break or make trophy wise. Experience is key. But if he wants to leave spain is the best choice. GYG

  29. Agreed ChrisGoona, the passion Cesc demonstrated in his celebration sends chills down my spine and makes me think he won’t leave us just yet.

    @ Steww

I dont know if they were being sarcastic or not but I do kind of get where their coming from. If your not committed to the cause then you can leave. No man is bigger than the club. With that said, I cannot fathom Cesc ever being uncommitted whilst wearing the Arsenal jersey.

  30. Hark, you should change your name to Bark… as you keep barking on all the time on your hate for Arsenal.

Are you a sad little Spu*s fan by the way?

  31. Pro III

I’m sick of seeing this team being rebuilt season after season, we need to let this team grow together, only then will we be able to reap the rewards we have all been patiently waiting for.

  32. PIRESAHOLIC

Yes I agree, but we shouldn’t sell one of the worlds best players, our talisman and captain for a cut down fee in any situation. EVEN if the player does want to leave, we shouldn’t feel forced to giving the player what he wants, especially to a club which has shown such disrespect to us.

Wenger told Cesc leave your future in my hands, you will have your move, not now. This means Barcelona can ‘bark like Hark’ all they want, but Arsenal do not see this as the right time to sell our best player for footballing reasons, image reasons, and financial reasons too.

Cesc will stay, and I don’t think he will be too displeased coming back to London after the World Cup.

  33. Furious Styles

Cesc is a decent guy and a professional and I have no doubts that he will play well if he stays. Sucks that he wants to leave, though.

  34. steww

Eduardo no goals in 12 games tells its own story.Arsenal are not a charity. After his injury he is just a shadow of the player he was.If we can get any decent price around £4m take it.After all he only cost £7m

  35. I am predicting another double figure season for Cesc, with goals and assists. Lets see how much Barca value him at the end of next season when he captains us to winning the league also.

I doubt they could afford him, and I think they are actually scared of this possibility, this is why they tried to buy him when our team has under-achieved.

  36. Hark,

Dennis Bergkamp took longer after 1st signing for us, did you think to sell him then too? Eduardo has had to restart his career practically.

Eduardo should be given the chance to prove himself, if he goes, good luck to him. But for you to come on here slating the guy who could have lost his leg, that says as much about you rather than Eduardo my friend.

  37. It is true he is a shadow of the player he was right now, so too is Rosicky, and so too could be Ramsey. Shall we sell Ramsey if he don’t look up to it when he comes back, or not give such a promising talent the chance to come back better.

All they need is time, some deserve it, others don’t. I think Eduardo deserves a season personally. His talent will be worth the wait, he never missed a chance before his injury.

  38. As the Spanish are the shortest people in Europe, how tall relatively is a 6 foot 5 Spanish striker relative to say, the Danes, who are the tallest people in Europe? I recall looking up, up, up at everybody in the airport in Copenhagen and thinking yowza, I haven’t shrunk have I? I’m not the shortest person I know, but there I was.

OK, you don’t have to answer that.

Zimbabweans are also pretty short I must say. That might be because we are a drought stricken land (one calamitous drought every 7 years).

    I’m bored.

Although Pz won’t agree, it does look to me like Brazil v Spain for the finals.

Brazil are robust, very tough on the ball or getting it back, but not dirty.

  39. Cesc will not go, Wenger will never be pushed into selling, he will only sale a player when he thinks it is in Arsenal interest to do so.

Please no Schwarzer, this guy is no better than we currently have and as I said before the main problem in shipping goals this season was the whole defensive unit.

So for me the outs will be:
Gallas, Senderos, Sylvestre, Merida, Campbell and Fabianski on loan so he can rebuilt his confidence by playing regularly.
    In:
Chamack, Koscielny, Kjaer/Cahill/Squillacci, Annan (looked good and playing for a norwegian team so could be taken easily) and I would love a bid for Ozil to prepare for when Cesc finally leaves and to piss off Barca who are thinking they can get him for free next year.

  40. apparently the deal for Remy has to be paid in full as Nice is struggling with money. West ham was refused because they wanted to pay in four instalments.

  41. I think Arsenal should buy Chile (well, um, their football team) so we can re-stock at will with hard running, crafty, dribbly, tough little Chileans.

Is it the Andes that makes them so?

  42. ZimPaul

Chile did impress me, but they let themselves down with their indiscipline in a few games. I enjoyed watching them, a team that just goes all out for it, no matter who that play.

Paraguay are quite different, not as quick, and play quite European like. I hope they frustrate Spain by sitting back putting loads of men behind the ball, that will be their only shot at beating them.

  43. No ZimPaul. Its yo dutty filthy mangina.

  44. I see we have a few football managers on here today. Sell him & him, buy him, him & him. It sure pisses me off reading this monotonous drivel day after day.

Thank goodness for YW, PZ, CG and a few others who post sensible (sometimes comical) comments.

  45. Yogi – Why do we tolerate posters who resort to racist language such as Goonerpower?
    Sounds like a Spud anyway.

  46. Something for the Denilson fans.

  47. I agree with Cesc being named our player of the year. Last year I felt Denilson was hard done, especially as the Actim Index backed him up. But no doubt this time. Cesc by a mile.
Lansbury to Newcastle is nice. I’m am great fan of his, Gerrard with a brain – future Arsenal legend.
And Zimpaul the Dutch are now considered the tallest people in the world – by nationality. By ethnicity it remains my cousins the Chollo/Shilluk of Southern Sudan.

  48. Thanks dupsffokcuf

They will never go away.. that drivel is what keeps a certain proportion of fans going. They really do thrive on it.

What annoys me is the lack of patience, and respect they show to our players and club – although a lot of these so called fans are trolls or spuds. I am very proud to be an Arsenal supporter, through the highs and lows. One game the likes of Theo and Diaby are superstars, the next they are hung out to dry by a section of supporters. It really does hang a cloud over our club at times during the season.

I actually feel ashamed at times to be associated with them, and I can’t bare to talk to some of the ‘buy him!, buy him!!’ supporters. I suppose every club has them so what can we do.

  49. I agree with the drug dealer

  50. Shotta-gunna remember what you told me?

  51. I’m hoping for a German victory. I never thought I would say that before the competition started, but they have impressed me in game after game. They are lethal on the counter-attack (as England discovered), but have the creativity to break down stubborn defences. They also have the athleticism that is so sorely lacking in the Spanish team. I haven’t noticed any outrageous cheating of the sort that has marred the Brazilian team and others, and, moreover, I don’t have a reason to dislike any of their players. Argentina will provide a good test for them. If they can come through that, I think they have a great chance of becoming champions.

  52. dupsffokcuf

    quality dancing :)

I do like Denilson, he plays well most the time, passes well, runs non stop, intercepts a lot of balls. Hes just one of them players who deosn’t get the appreciation he deserves. He is consistently better than Diaby, who should be the better player with his ability. I don’t think Denilson is far off getting called up for the next Brazil squad if he continues to improve. He will have to take it up another level though to reach the performance levels of a Cesc for instance to get there.. You gotta be playing pretty well to play for Brazil. At the moment he is looking ordinarily good most the time, where as supporters we prefer to only notice the spectacularily good half the time players more. If anyone knows what I mean!

Hes a good squad player at least for now.. next season will be interesting to see how he develops. He has Ramsey and co breathing down his neck too, so hes gotta perform.

  53. Thomas Müller was just interviewed and said that the trouble with the England team is to many alpha males. To many Chiefs and not enough Indians to do the leg work.

  54. Chrisgooner and Dupsffokscup, I reckon Denilson will be captaining the Brazilian team at the London Olympic. The only cup they’ve never won. Who’ll you be backing, a Great Britain team with Wilshere, Gibbs, Lansbury and maybe more from Arsenal’s academy or Brazil.

  55. kenyan

I can’t wait for that day, a nice thought to picture.

Soon all the hard work will pay off, all our squad players are experienced now, are young players stepping up, more also in the waiting. Plus the likes of Cesc, Robin, Arshavin, Nasri and Theo will be desperately hungry for success next season.

I am really optimistic for the immediate future, as well as 5 years down the line.

Oh yeah, what happened to clubs spending within their means? Man City are said to be on the verge of signing David Silva, and Yaya Toure

  56. Has David James been snapped up by a new club? I would take him over Mark Schwarz.

  57. Chrisgooner, I usually support Brazil – after Kenya which wouldn’t make it to London anyway and Nigeria who are unfortunately greatly disorganized but may qualify- but would be hard pressed if those gunners make into the English Olympic squad.
I’m hoping Mancini let’s us have Micah Richards on the cheap. Wasn’t Hughes virtually throwing him at us? Believe Wenger can revive his faltering career. Also a lifelong Arsenal supporter. I’d forgive him for the goal he scored against us if he joins.

  58. Don’t forget Ramsay in the GB team as well,kg.
Gilberto has looked impressive for Brazil this WC, but Denilson will step in and replace him, like he did with us, when the time is right.

And @ dupsffokcuf, I agree with you about the “buy x, sell y” posts. Dull beyond belief. Oh and I just got what’s going on with your name!

  59. @ YW

Just a quick post – totally agree with your stance on technology. I argued strongly for goal-line technology and ONLY goal-line technology some months ago, and I think that your suggestion as to how to draw the line there, ie removing the potential for contentious decisions by simplifying the rules, is an excellent one!

  60. - “removing the potential”
    - “reducing the potential”

  61. On the goalkeeping situation I have to say Manuel Neuer has really grown on me, he’s a very classy keeper with a bright future but don’t we already have one of those ;)

Enyeama was also impressive but I doubt Wenger would sign him.

I’m surprised noone is hoping for a Dutch upset against the Brazilians.

    HUP HUP HUP ;)

  62. The thing that really impressed me from the Chileans was their speed of mind in passing, and sometimes dribbling, through an opposition midfield. They have been without doubt the biggest ‘find’ of the world cup for me and by far the most entertaining of the lot.

It’s true they were indisciplined to a degree, and some foul play. I put that down to playing a do-or-die match with little real chance of going through (would have been the upset of the decade), so they thought, OK, let’s do this then, what the … i Also liked their team spirit, one for all and all that.

I really like this German team too, but later on I think they might be undone by a team that is both experienced and structured (unlike Ingaland), and that could be either Argentina or Spain.

I wouldn’t have thought the Dutch are tallest population in Europe, going by my personal straw poll system, although they sure bicycle around a lot. OK, I know this is an illogical train of thought.

  63. Mingus , the Welsh, Scottish and Northern Ireland FA’s have said that the Olympic squad will be left to England only to compete as Great Britain. So no Ramsey. Remember that Brazil may also call on the likes of Pato, and our very own Wellington and Botelho as well!

  64. Which one is the drug dealer?

  65. PIRESAHOLIC, Paul N is for Netherlands he just hasn’t logged in yet.

  66. Hmmmm on this buy n sell issue, I think we should just get one more PROVEN Cb and we should be set for the new season, Kjaer would be great, did you guys see his long ball to Rommedahl to set up the danish goal against Cameroon? Imagine him feeding those type of balls to our strikers (lol I know that sounded so wrong but come on, grow up people!). Also, we do owe Eduardo one more season as it takes time to recover from such an injury physically and mentally. Once he overcomes these obstacles his hunger for the game will return ten fold which will hopefully result in many goals for us. I’m optimistic about our chances this season.

  67. Am definitely for Netherlands vs Germany finals…

It used to be Spain vs Netherlands but i dropped them cos of harrazing cesc and was grudgingly torn between having to support the likes of CR7 yesterday! LOL
i has Ghana Brazil Argentina and Netherlands for final, not sure that is feasible

  68. I think the referees will do the Dutch again. In the last two meetings there were offside goals and denied penalty. I think this time it will be red card awarded for a Maicon dive.

Man he impressed me against Chile, such an elegant dive with such a huge frame!

  69. Racist language is one thing, but there’s a regular commenter on the two youth blogs whose very name would get him locked up in some free countries. And nobody says shit. Every time I read it I want to react in some way.

Ugh, maybe it’s not important – it’s only a blog.

  70. The name isn’t “Spurs4Ever” btw!

  71. I noted that septic bladder has warned the French government that they should not interfere with French football or they will be punished! That man is very much in my annoying jerk category. I wish a few of the European football associations would tell Mr. Septic to take a flying leap and implement goal line technology without the approval of FIFA which is proving itself to be too anachronistic for modern football. North America has implemented goal line technology eons ago and they have not shriveled up drifted away. It would not surprise me to see the MLS implement video replay for controversial issues in their games. I wonder if North America cares one jot about Septic and his FIFA gang.

  72. @ YW

And I think Sol should stay if Wenger wants him to. I think he owes Arsenal that, all things considered.

  73. YW:

Why not review all goals and disallowed goals and potential goals during stop in play. There is a natural break in play after every goal and Lampards goal could have been reviewed with the next stop in play. I have heard there is a way to put a microchip or some type of technology in the ball and on the goal line which will immediately tell if the ball has crossed the line without reviewing video tape. Is that true?

The technology is good enough that it would not take long and it would not slow down the pace of play. It is hard enough to score a goal in top flight football and to lose a good goal and a game because of a bad call is unacceptable when it is easily prevented with technology.

I agree that we can not review every offsides etc etc unless they lead directly to a goal.

  74. OneOfUs saw you foul mouthing the fellow. Funny.

  75. Brazil as a team are just so strong.Brilliant keeper.Great back four plus Melo and Gilberto adding extra protection then Kaka Robinho and Fabiano up front. They are the only complete team in the tournament.Argentina superb going forward but the back four is a bit dodgy

  76. This WC the national stereotypes have gone out of the window. The Dutch are playing like the Germans, the Germans are playing like the Brazilians, the Brazilians are playing like the portuguese, the Portuguese are playing like the Italians(atleast against stronger teams) and the Italians & French are playing like shit. Only one team has been true to its stereotype… guess who?

  77. It was totally futile, and a waste of time, KG. The best I can do is come with a username that will offend him as much as his does me, which also wouldn’t really be worth the effort either.

It’s fucked that people just have to get on with it while they have that filth pushed in their faces. OK, that’s it – no more oxygen for him and his cause.

  78. KenGun, more than anything other team, I would LOVE to see Ghana win the WC. I know its a long shot but no team dare take them lightly. After Ghana Holland, RVP plays for them doesnt he?

  79. People dissing Eduardo have forgotten the beginning of the season, when he beating his defender off the dribble and putting in some nice assists.

Do people even give the any thought to the niggling injuries that this man has had to injure and the biased media. Walcott likewise as far as injuries? I wonder if people just forget how well they were playing at the beginning.

The dismissive ways of some people just gets on my nerves!

  80. geez a lot of mistakes in my last comment. take your time Paul!

  81. Thank f*ck them portugeezers are out, they always stink out tournaments. over rated defensive negative cheating c*nts the lot of um.

  82. Shotta @ 12.01pm

He got away with it because I was at my children’s Sports Day. He hasn’t got away with it anymore and isn’t going to get away with it in future, especially as Mrs YW is Spanish.

To cap it all, the limited intellect prevented him from even spelling the word correctly!

    YW

  83. Ghana all the way.. the have the support of a few continents, not just Africa!!

They have a shot if they get their shooting boots on.. I suspected a few of the other African teams to do better, Ivory Coast and Cameroon, but they had fairly difficult groups to get through. Get past Uruguay and they surely have the momentum to do something special, a bit like how Greece did. Some teams grow in a tournament, the pundits are saying Spain is growing, I saw them hold a lot of the ball, but no end product.

Brazil and Argentina on the other hand look to be the complete package. I am hoping Holland can stop Brazil, wanna see Van Persie lift the trophy, then fire Arsenal to a title winning campaign!

  84. Paul N

I second that, regarding Theo and Edu. Some fans are just very short sighted. I can see them both returning next season and having a big impact on our challenge for honours.

People seem to forget how Edu nearly lead us to a title winning campaign, well he would have if his leg wasn’t snapped! Then Walcott started last season on fire, the whole of Europe dreaded facing the lad, Croatia were one of his many victims who still to this day say his name with fear.

We have a very unappreciative bunch of supporters as some of our players will be snapped up instantly by other big teams if we don’t want them. Bit of patience and it is all coming together.

  85. Yeh CG, No doubt if not for that Eduardo Injury the title wouldve been ours and that success wouldve continued

Its so dissapointing to read and hear some of the Bull.

No athlete performs at their best after injuries. Look at Torres, the guy is a disaster for Spain at present but we all know he is a great player.

You just dont know how much the “sell Eduardo, Rosicky and Denilson…” comments annoys me

    Damn it!

  86. Since Ballack got injured and I watched Germany first group match, i have also been drawn to this team plus what they accomplished on Sunday makes me love them more. I think they have a great chance of beating Argentina seeing as mexico had alot of those opportunities but couldn’t put them away.Argentina’s defense isnt that great either.

I am also hoping Netherlands upset Brazil for the reasons stated above by others. I stopped counting how many dives they took after Maicon got in on it too. From the replays it was utterly embarrassing for such people to dive left, right and centre. I have been a fan of Brazil for over a decade but this WC they havent been playing to their high standards and then ofcourse I love Van P and would like his team to do well.

I also found myself supporting Portugal yesterday COZ OF THE WHOLE BARCA FIASCO and no matter how much I dislike Ronaldo I thought the ref didnt give him enough protection. There was an instance Capdevilla used both of his hands to shove him and nothing was done.

  87. Paul N

Lets keep the same squad together and finish 10pts or more behind Man Utd and Chelsea again!!!.We need to replace the players who are not performing or settle for finishing 3rd or 4th again. There is a reason why we havent won anything for 5 years, its we are not good enough like Engerlund were not good enough in SA.

  88. Duke

Hear Hear the Portugese stunk the joint out. What is the point in having a player like Ronaldo and just playing for penalties.Portugal France and Engelund played football from the dark ages.Thank god for Spain Brazil and Argentina

  89. Paul N interesting to see your team’s Ghana. I was vouching for Nigeria and they – as I expected – let me down. I believe that when they finally get their act together – hopefully in my lifetime – they’ll have the world’s greatest team. But again it’s hard to really count on Nigeria. Sad!

  90. Can portugal really be # 3 in the world?

Ken Gun I’ve liked this particular Ghana team for a while. Viva Ghana. Otherwise Cameroon for their previous exploits, and well, Zambia and Malawi are old favourites for various reasons.

Zimbabwe might just produce a team one day; they did 20 years ago. We beat Cameroon at home, Egypt away (!), and humiliated SA (the best football day, well nearly, of my life).

  91. Hark you must practice your support more. It’s very poor.

  92. Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the national side from international competition for the next two years.

    ZimPaul @ 4:499 – Good point.

  93. That’s the problem with African football. If the politicians would leave the game to itself the game would really benefit. Another stupid intervention from a stupid leader. Somebody pray for African football please – I’m not religious myself.

  94. I cannot help you there KG. My only God is in my avatar.

  95. Dupsffokcuf, I love a man with humour, I’ve laughed my head off. Thanks.

  96. Eboue cracks me up. I hope he spends the rest of his career at Arsenal.

I am a Holland supporter. I think they can take Brazil if they stay patient and keep possesion. If they can get Brazil to chase the game a bit, I’m sure they’ll be able to create some chances. And if Holland can create some chances they’ve got enough fire power in Sneijder and Van Persie to put those away.

As far as the match ups are concerned I am looking forward to De Jong s Robinho and Gilberto vs Sneijder.

A Brazilian player I wouldn’t mind Wenger snatching up would be Ramires. When I saw his name on Brazil’s squad list I wasn’t too impressed. After watching him against Chile, however, I think he’d be a great playe to add to our DM spot just in case Alex is injured or to give him a rest every now and again.

  97. I think Sepp Blatter is absolutely right to condemn any government, whether French of Nigerian, for meddling in football. I admire him for it. He has more courage than most world leaders. Perhaps that is why, despite his faults, he commands so much support.

  98. Well, not much happening then. I’m off back to the bar for another beer. What, I’m already in one? That’s convenient!

  99. Hello there, Consolsbob. I thought the Greeks must have mistaken you for a pregnant woman and burned you death. Thank God I was wrong.

  100. Four referees sent home from South Africa. Funny that Howard Webb rated the best thus far. Reminds me of the saying that “familiarity breeds contempt!”

  101. Oh please Hark

  102. Watching Al jazeera. Interesting fellow called simon Kuper on. He’s the author of a book called “Soccernomics.”

  103. Hark,

Argentina, Brazil and Spain are far from the only teams that tried to play football.

Germany, Mexico, Chile, Ghana, The US, Japan…

    You hatin?

  104. KenGun, I love the African teams and as a man partly of African descent I would love to see one of the countries win the world cup. Actually I think that Ghana are the darlings of the world cup regardless of nationality or race. It would be a great thing for world football if they won.

Nigeria is a brillant footballing nation, it seems they just need better structure.

    What happened to Senegal?

  105. Paul N , the great Senegalese team was made of a majority of Frenchmen. The same tradition that produced Vieira and Evra. I.e. they were mainly the children of migrants. Just like the Surinamese migrants who left a mark in Dutch football. Maybe the present generation of French- senegalese have less attachment to their parents home than the golden generation did. It like if Theo Walcott had chosen Barbados over England. Not likely as he is fully intergrated to the English way of life. But I may be wrong.

  106. Like take Ivory Coast. Add Abou Diaby, Jibril Cisse and Johann Djourou to the squad and they’d be much stronger. Ghana has benefited from Boateng – who is German – and Andre Ayew who was born and raised in France.

  107. I would rather keep hold of Eduardo and sell NB52 while he’s still worth something. Eduardos had a difficult season but could come back much stronger this time around…. I’ve always said ( and after the WC and last season I continue to say ) that NB52 isn’t half as good as he would like to think he is and I really can’t see that changing…. Poor pace and the first touch of rapist let’s him down…. I’d deffo take a risk on eduardo and keep hold of him

  108. Cashley is just setting the scene with all his ‘pressure’ comments about the English media and fans.

    100% he’s gone to Madrid.

  109. that comment on Nigerian President is surely a joke right?

  110. silver gunner

Paulie I disagree he can only get better but only if he starts playing to his strengths which is target man i mean look at his international record for denmark which plays a very orthodox 4-4-2 with two pacy wingers that continously pump balls into the box he has something like 12 or 13 goals in 35 games which aint bad for a 22 year old.

I say give him one more season unfortunately our fav crozilian had not looked the same after coming back from injury.

  111. silver gunner

afraid not team spirit the twat apply named Goodluck Jonathan has just committed football and political suicide in a country that lives for football.

  112. Fungunner

I don’t think Sol owes Arsenal anything. We were in serious need of a central defender and he fit the bill. He did a great job. He now wants two years commitment and Arsenal will only give him one. I would only give him one too, but as he’s coming to the end of his career, he can’t be blamed for wanting to go where the greater financial security is. That’s either Celtic or Newcastle. He will also be able to play more frequently with those teams.

  113. i dont think it will stand…. does that mean no nations cup for them? strange ban

  114. I understand your point silver gunner but is AW likely to play a ‘very orthadox’ 4-4-2 in the near future? ….. I would like to see it but he seems to be veering very much towards a 4-3-3 which he believes suits our style if football…. I could be wrong.

  115. OK, any one seen Passenal? I don’t think she commented since the WC began?

  116. @ lagooner

I think Sol does owe us, actually.
Campbell did a great job for his six months, but he was paid for it – he wasn’t doing it out of the kindness of his heart.
He left us in the lurch halfway through a match at West Ham. He claimed he wanted to leave Arsenal to play overseas, but ended up signing for Portsmouth. Despite this, when Sol had nowhere to go last autumn after the Notts County venture came to nothing, Wenger, with typical generosity, welcomed him back to train at Arsenal – with no thought of signing him at that stage, just to help out an ex-player.
I would think Campbell has earned enough over his career as a top-flight PL player not to have to worry about his retirement.

  117. Thanks KenGun, the picture is much clearer now.

As much as Song did us a great favour, he wasnt playing any football at all was he? I agree with FunGun, Sol should give us a year and then he can go and flaunt with whomever.

  118. Sol that is!

  119. @ Paul N
Yep. And he was desperate to play anywhere and get his career back on track, so to get the chance to play for Arsenal is hardly a case of him doing the club a favour. It was serendipity.

  120. I see it’s now about who did who a favor? It used to be all about business and kick Rosicky out while he was down…Or ship Eduardo somewhere cause “he” broke his leg and not worth keeping any more…etc.,

Now Campbell did us a favor? Campbell was out of football and out of contract, we gave him a chance to stay fit and play at the highest level and he filled a hole in our defense, although it was not super-hero stuff.

Arsenal will not be the best place for him in the long run or whatever time left in his football career. He is also not good for us in the long run, unless he is willing to warm a big space on the bench a lot.

  121. You are right about that FunGun! Sol is the one who has gotten the sweet end of the deal. He now has “options”. Dude bailed out on the team and now the team gave him a chance he is boogeying again, or atleast thinking about it.

G4E, I think Sol will get a decent amount of playing time if he stays, especially if Gallas leaves. He wants to coach, is this not the best place for him to bring the younsters along?

  122. I don’t think Sol did us a favour. I do think there were equal rewards on both sides, and that’s why I can understand him signing somewhere else for two years instead of with us for one.

  123. Love that Eboue clip!

  124. Our new kit!

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/arsenal/7864002/Arsenal-unveil-environmentally-friendly-retro-new-home-kit.html

Looks similar to 06-08. I for one had hoped for the cannon badge instead of our current crest. Well, at least we have proper white sleeves for the next two seasons.

  125. I like it a lot.

  126. http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Arsenal-transfer-news-Cesc-Fabregas-says-he-may-not-join-Barcelona-after-all-article503423.html

So, am I reading this correctly? The “news” of the summer are non-news after all? Cesc staying, that’s it? Wow, good job reporting for months about nothing at all, media!

  127. The centre back position was a critical area for Arsenal last season. We had Vermalen, Gallas, and Djourou injured during parts of the campaign. We need to sign either Sol or one more centre back to secure the team at this position. If we duplicate the injury problem experienced last season, it will not be enjoyable. Actually, I am beginning to become a tad depressed and training has not even started!

  128. California Gooner

Does anyone really believe this “Cesc might not even start if he plays for Barca” junk. Spain have played pretty crap compared to expectations this tournament, and I think having that fool Busquets diving around instead of playing Cesc (and David Silva) might have something to do with it. For me, Cesc will soon have the kind of influence on games (and on his team) that Zidane did for France. In other words, he might not be playing, but Spain would look a hell of a lot more convincing if he were.

  129. Where’s your sense of humour, mingus? That Daily Mail article showing the new home-kit still manages to have a sneering tone! These journalists are very talented to be able to do that.

  130. Looks like Cesc is staying.
