Arsene To Buy Ajax, Roy Of The Rovers & Win A Home Shirt

A mixed day for the Arsenal contingent in South Africa. Robin van Persie will be happy with his performance and the result, Bendtner mixed emotions and goodness alone knows what is going through Alex Song’s mind, relegated to the bench as another French coach showed that Dick Dastardly was not the only flawed genius.

Quite what was going through Paul Le Guen’s mind in dropping Song and playing Eto’o on the right is unknown. The answer to that question seems likely to be ‘not much at all‘. Perhaps the vuvuzela was distracting him. Interestingly, the broadcasters are blaming the players, coaches and other fans for the complaints about these ‘instruments’ whilst Fifa notes that the only formal moaning about them has come from the broadcasters. Hmmmm….

Back to the matches. Japan won their first World Cup finals match on foreign soil as Le Guen decided that having a competitive squad was better than fielding your best team. What is it at international level with French coaches? First we have Domenech, who we knew was certifiably nuts, cocking up France’s opener and now Cameroon lost against their weakest group opponent. Absolute genius.

Robin van Persie will be reasonably happy with his own performance in The Netherlands 2 – 0 win over Denmark, providing the cross which caused confusion in the Danish defence and the opening goal. Poulson was unfortunate to head against Agger’s back but ultimately it was a poor goal to concede. van Persie and the Dutch generally, hinted at better things to come but were well worth their win.

Given that Nicklas Bendtner was an injury doubt before the game, he put in a decent performance although he screwed his one real opening wide. The Danes containment of the Dutch worked in the first half but was undone early in the second. They lacked the penetration that their Golden Generation of 1986 – 92 had and the suspicion is that it will be the difference between qualifying and going home early, surely Cameroon will be fired up for their final encounter, a game which realistically they will have to win and Denmark will need at least a point from.

As for Italy, the less said about their first half performance the better. No, seriously, it was that bad. So bad, Paraguay must have been wondering what they were worried about beforehand. The second 45 minutes was a vast improvement and brought them the draw that they deserved overall.

So to Arsenal. The photoshopping of the new away kit gathers pace this morning with Daily Mail artists getting to work. Not too sure about it being a throwback to the Woolwich Arsenal days, it struck me as a little too Watford on first glance. However, we’ll be a bit generous and allow Nike to say it was inspired by Melchester Rovers all-conquering sides, obviously inverted.

Elsewhere, Arsene has been very impressed by the Dutch qualifying campaign for South Africa is covetously glancing in the direction of the Eredivision. Specifically he is looking at Ajax. More specifically at Stekelenburg, van der Wiel, Suarez and now Vertonghen. That takes care of the defence and attack. Such is his eye for a bargain that he has talked Ivan Gazidis, Kroenke and Usmanov into buying the club rather than separate bids for each of the players. Quite what he will do with Rommendahl is anyone’s guess but Gunnersaurus is looking nervously over his shoulder.

  1. Is it possible that I’m first.

Anyway, quite what LeGuen was thinking we will never know.

O and I actually read the post.

  2. That out of the way…

I tried to find reports of some kind of rift between Song and the manager, but couldn’t find any.

Maybe LeGuen doesn’t think Song is his best player in that position, preferring to play someone who can’t control the ball much less pass it.

Then having the nerve to blame the players attitude, I was not just disappointed at the results but truly pissed at the incompetence of the coach.

  3. That away kit doesn’t look that good at all….they should replace the redcurrant with blue or black.

  4. *

  5. Is there a prize for fourth? Or do I have to enter a qualification round?

  6. can you enter your jersey draw if you live in New Zealand? I have family in London

  7. Black!!! where the hell did that come from? For that matter where did Blue come from? i know it was introduced in the 70′s but black??

  8. Kar

Yep. Get the answer right though, something which has eluded 30% of the entrants so far.

    YW

  9. Can’t wait to watch the New Zealand Slovakia match…o wait!

  10. What a croc that RvP v NB game was. I missed it as I was at work so recorded it. Yawn!!! RvP had a little go but to be honest the whole performance was lacking.

So far nobody has stood out for me. Germany yeah, but Australia were very poor.

  11. “Such is his (arsene’s) eye for a bargain that he has talked Ivan Gazidis, Kroenke and Usmanov into buying the club rather than separate bids for each of the players”

lol – that is a classic YW

  12. Eels

That’s the problem with group games though. There are in some groups, 3 good teams, some 2, others one or none.

If Fifa wanted a genuinely decent tournament all the way through, do away with seeding. The interest in a competition where Argentina had to come through a group with say, England, Brazil and Spain would be greater than there is now.

    YW

  13. Going through the turgid games so far in the WC, I find myself most disinterested. I think watching Arsenal play has spoiled me for life!

Speaking of talented Dutch footballers – Eljero Elia on the left and Van Der Wiel impressed.

  14. @YW: I know what you mean but the present system does allow the so called “top sides” to reach the Quarter finals. A QF with Slovakia and Korea (instead of Spain or Brazil for instance) would be painful.

  15. I love the new away kit tbh.. If the stores in SA will have them available i’ll be sure to buy mine. Eager to see the new home kit though. Saw pictures here and there. Looks retro. Love that too o_o! guess i’ll be buying both lol

  16. Italy were not that bad in the first half last night, although they lacked inspiration, and one or two players contributed precisely f*ck all. In a hard fought match, one puts oneself at a disadvantage when only 9 of one’s men are playing. It certainly wasn’t below average for the performances in the World Cup so far. Was the Italy match shown on the BBC? The hatred of Italy (and even more so of Germany) on that channel is a disgrace.

  17. Really like the away kit I have to say.

Always loved any yellow shirts we had. Even the bright bright yellow and bright blue back in 2001 I think. I got Bergkamp 10 on the back.

  18. The quality so far has been piss poor.

Argentina were very un-inspiring going forward, as they never tried to after getting the 1st goal. Germany played a really rubbish Australia outfit who were all over the place. England dissapointed going forward as usual – bet they wish they had Theo to bring on, not SWP!

Holland I didnt get to watch so I won’t comment. Italy were quite lively in the 2nd half, and were snappy on every 50-50. Quality was ok, I don’t think they have to enough to win it, but you never know with the Italians.

Portugal vs Ivory Coast later should be a good game I hope! Then theres Spain and Brazil still to come too.. so we should expect some goals at least.

  19. what is all this comment 4?

  20. Why all the moaning and groaning? Its the world cup for heaven’s sake. The 1st round never gets interesting until the final group games at best. The knock-out rounds are where the action is. Fear of losing, new ball, new environment all conspire towards a cautious approach at this stage.

  21. Le Guen is a chump, but if he keeps Song rested and fit for next seaon we should be thanking the guy.

If only van Marwijk would follow suit and drop van Persie.

  22. Yeah that shirt is my favourite yellow jobbie to date. It’s really nice with the red berry.

I’m also looking forward to Ivory coast whupping Portugal.

  23. chrisgoona

I think that the away kit will look good on the new guy Ozil.Cos I think that he will be the perfect replacement for Captain-cesc-fabrecas.But I Heavily Doubt that we are even After Him.

  24. The away kit is shocking…..

Its yellow and BLUE not grey, not maroon, not all blue, not green…

YELLOW AND BLUE I TELL YOU DAMN IT!!!!!!!

  25. shotta your right but so far the tournament has been more stale than usual.

Nice to see a few teams going for it but they seem to be the more creatively challenged teams, like S Korea, South Africa and even the USA.

  26. It’s just football, els. It’s like when Adebayor finally got to bed with Beyonce. He said afterwards, “it turned out to be just another f*ck. I thought it would be something more.”

  27. You can cancel out 95% of the vuvuzela by filtering out 233, 466, 932 and 1864 Hz bands.

Here is the windows version advise:
    http://isophonics.net/content/whats-all-about-vuvuzela

And this is a very effective prosonic version which unfortunately only runs on mac:
    http://soundcloud.com/user7421656/vuvuzela-filter

I dont reccomend the guy who sells a £3 45min long mp3 which he claims if you play it loudly in the same room it will effectively cancel out the vuvuzela…

  28. els – I agree, the underdogs are more likely to put on a show.

I enjoyed watching Korea actually, Germany produced some nice football, but again Australia were really poor and couldn’t even get the ball out of their own half!

South Africa done well too, they gave it their all going forward when they had the chance to, the left footed strike will probably be goal of the tournament.

  29. I do feel everyone has hyped it up to a point where any game that doesn’t have 100 shots on goal and 20 shots hitting the woodwork is seen as boring!!! Its hit me hard watching some games, its like watching Italian Serie A!!!

  30. Serie A maybe thats a bit harsh eh. :)

I do actually love the world cup I love the vibe, summers not summer without it. Maybe I’ve set my expectations to high this time. Spoilt by god damned Wengerball.

We should all make predictions for second round then have YW log them. Just to make it a bit more exciting. Come on YW provide a service.

  31. YW did I get the question right?!

  32. Le Shite thinks they are everything Arsenal even though Arsenal FC have not donated them a shirt !!! He even went into one having a pretend one-on-one convo with Gazidis!!

hahaha what losers, the writers are truly a great reflection of all that is bad in many a supporter

  33. Chris

Arsenal only donated a shirt because I asked if the marketing department would be able to supply one specifically for this competition. They spoke to Retail, who said yes.

To the best of my knowledge, IG had nothing to do with it.

    YW

  34. Don’t be naive, YW. They’re hardly going to give away a whole football shirt without the chief executive being involved.

  35. Thoughts:
    a) I like the new away kit.
    b) Martin Keown is trying too hard as co-commentator. He’s better in the studio. He even used the “mountain to climb” cliché.
    c) Gilberto Silva is a man to listen to for advice. Thinks Cesc should just stay.
    d) Does anyone know if Eboué is usually a starter for Ivory Coast?

  36. I like the new away shirt, it look like a mixed between the one from 2000ish with the O2 sponsor and the red wine colored shorts from the white one we had one or two years ago.

I hope Ivory Coast crushes the portuguese and that Cristiano starts whinging because the defender intercepted his balls.

Look out for Gervinho, he is playing for Lille and is really good, would be good to bid for him and Hazard.

  37. mingus, Eboue certainly started at right-back throughout qualifiers, and in the ACON too as far as I can remember. I’m expecting him to start today. Having said that I thought Alex Song was pivotal to the Cameroon team, that Walcott would start on England’s right wing and that Samir Nasri would at least make the French final 23… so who the knows.

Keown just said, “Even Superman wouldn’t have got on the end of that one”. He talks like a small child sometimes. Still think he’s great though.

I like the new kit too. Classic without being ‘retro’, and a bit different without being… well, white or anything awful like that. 7/10.

  38. North London'rrr

new kit looks good – (though kinda reminds me of watford-yikes) hope we have some decent players in it next season.

Will be interesting to see what changes are made to the England team for the next game. Hopefully Joe Cole gets a start on the left with Gerrard behind Rooney. Lampard and Barry in the middle. Its got to be lennon on the right – though how we’ve ended up so weak there is beyond me!

  39. Excellent. Winston Reid has had a really good game at rightback. Any point in the World Cup is massive for the All Whites. Well done, Kiwis.

  40. Completely off topic…but topical.

Any vuvuzuela renditions of national anthems been heard?

And why was there no ladysmith black mambazo at the opening ceremony?

    …kiwi goal….skrtel looks..like a liverpool player

  41. I’ll look out for Gervinho, gunnerluc. Heard the name but not seen him play. I’m hoping Fábio Coentrão starts at leftback for Portugal. Very skilfull, more of a winger.

  42. I’m quite pissed off with this ball to be honest. The combination of playing at high altitude and playing with a light ball is definitely having an effect on the quality of play. Far too many overhit passes. The ones that bounce miles over a winger or wingback’s head and into the stands are particularly annoying. But I think it’s the altitude more than the ball itself… or the effect of high altitude on this ball?

This was true as of yesterday…

Shots on target at low altitude: 44%
Shots on target at high altitude: 23%

That can’t all be to do with stamina levels can it??

  43. did anyone watch the nz v slovakia game? The all whites just made nz football history and slovakias goal was offside! So stoked, I like the new kit i’m looking forward to seeing what the home strip looks like didn’t like the polos last year, it suited the missus though!

  44. 0:47 in…

  45. But I suggest you play it all, soak in the build up.

  46. I like the look of Ivory Coast, If (and it’s a big if, I know) they can get out of their group, I think they could make the or Semi Finals.

Ronaldo is doing his diving best to get the whole of the opposition team booked. Nothing changes with the show-pony.

  47. Lampard’s Assist. High altitude means less air. Less air, means less resistance. The ball essentially floats and cant swivel on its axis.

Im no physicist, so dont quote me on that though.

  48. This ref is a total joke. How could he miss that tackle on Eboue? Did the Portugese stiff have to break his leg?

  49. Thanks Damien. That will do.

BTW any ladysmith black mambazo at all, or is that before your time?

  50. Ivory Coast are really good.

  51. Is anybody doing any decorating today?

If so can I come around and watch the paint dry as its probably going to be far more entertaining than this World Cup!!!

  52. Wanted The Coast to win.

  53. love the new shirt, im getting one with chamakh 29

  54. decent game from eboue. I cant wait for brazil v north koreea, Come on north korea it would be one of the shocks in football history

  55. Watching the Ivory Coast vs Portugal as briefly as I did; it is noticeable how both teams were afraid to lose especially the Portugese. As some of us feared, teams like Portugal are now adopting “Mourinho-ism”, two banks of four behind the ball as high up the pitch as they can safely allow.
Thanks Jose. I hereby dub thee “TBOF” for your great tacticcal contribution to the game of football.

PS: Obviously everybody in this group hopes to tonk North Korea starting later today with Brazil. Very, very interesting.

  56. Mourinho-ism, Dunga-ism, bor-ism

  57. It will be interesting to see if Brazil too, have adopted the anti-poetry/pragmatic approach to winning football matches.
Who will be left to fly the flag for the beautiful game?

  58. arsenal

  59. People flake back and forth Shotta G…when we were playing awesome football since 1998 and winning things…every one was so happy with total football. Now that Boreinho is winning things playing crap football, every one wants it.

  60. 123 vive lalgerie 123 vive lalgerie 123 viva lalgerieeeeeee

  61. ….Oh of course! Arsenal!
    Good to see Gilberto.

  62. Isn’t it just great to finally see the yellow of Brazil at this world cup. Let’s hope they can bring it to life.

  63. Song, Nasri, Theo, Denilson and Almunia all overrated. Can’t get into their national sides.

  64. F*ck Off Howard

  65. North Korea are not at all bad.

  66. North Korea are playing amazing!

  67. Maturks, shut up. nono no….but just….just…shut up

  68. More than holding their own and looking dangerous on the counter attack, i have to say it’s a surprise.

  69. Look forward to our very own Wellington Silva next time around!

  70. @maturks the whole team is overrated, cant win CL and cant win PL. We should sell all except rvp, cesc and verm as tehy have won all the matches this year, the rest has just been wtching. And then we should use 300M and buy 8 new players. Do you not think? I mean duh! they are all overated right? :P

  71. Resolute defending from the North Koreans so far. Can they keep it up for 90 mins? This functional Brazilian team do not seem to have the quality (despite all the big names on the pitch) to conjure up something special to break the deadlock. They are too laboured in their build up. Living on the memory of the great Brazilian teams of the past, but nowhere near that level.

  72. Some neat passing from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as well.

  73. First half highlights

  74. I feel for the NK goal keeper, who expected that to go in from there?

  75. Passenal,

Not Tyldesley. What a complete arse.

    YW

  76. It was a very accurate strike Passenal. Brilliantly skillful run from Bastos there. A joy to watch.

  77. Good goal, I must say!

  78. Matty boy, I’m still not convinced he meant it! Regardless, it was pretty amazing and unexpected, which is always good to see. But that second goal, was something else. The pass from Robinho was excellent and the finish was perfect.

  79. I guess it is still an achievement for N Korea to hold on for 54 minutes against Brazil.

  80. You’re a tough audience, Passenal, a tough audience

  81. I’m happy for North Korea, they deserved that goal.

  82. No YW @ 9.01 pm, I’ve just been spoilt by 14 years of Wenger ball at Arsenal!

  83. Cracking finish. That’s the one Arsene will be linked with in the press this week.

Mind you, the lad who was in tears with the national anthem has the passion. When he was tackled just now by Juan, he had the look of a man who will tell his grandchildren he was that close to a goal at the World Cup finals…

  84. I cannot believe both Clive Tyldesley, and Chris Coleman, and now my very own Patrick Viera… all thought that was a cross! By far the best goal of the World Cup so far and the commentators and pundits are fucking it up! *shakes head and both fists all at once*

  85. Actually… I take that back. Tshabalala’s was miles better. Forgot about that one. Seems an age away… so many goals to remember you see…

  86. To cross the ball from that angle he would need to use the inside of his foot. If you watch a replay he used the outside and kicked it very hard to induce the spin.

    That’s my thought anyway.

  87. It’s what is known as a toe poke.

  88. My guess is that Maicon didn’t have a clue where that “shot” was going. If he was really trying to shoot, he would have kicked the ball straight at the keeper, as strikers are wont to do. Maybe he was trying to do that, but mis-kicked the ball, and shanked the ball into the goal.

  89. Tshaabnabalabalala;s goal was better

  90. North Korea, were very impressive. Theyll be celebrating that goal and performance i…well theyll be supervised in their celebration anyway and give letters to dear father’s statue thanking him because he is the one who gave korea DPR no fear.

  91. Perhaps Maicon was trying to smash the ball over the bar – as his team-mates had been doing all match – but the new design made it stay low and swerve to the right instead.

  92. The jabulani ball is a disgrace, the free kicks keep going way over. And plus, the ball is so light you cant get a proper contact on it. And that just ruins the competition because what would have been great goals, like mbia for cameroon, just swerve and end up hitting something other than the back of the net, usually a fan high up in the stands

  93. It makes me laugh when players start blaming the ball for their bad free kicks. If long-distance shots started going on target, there might be reason to blame the ball. When they sail over the bar, it’s just business as normal.

  94. Poliziano but why is it happening almost all the time? Because the ball is too light. I have a replica myself, and actually the panelling is completely different, according to adidas to make it rounder, and its waay to light

  95. Why do they keep tinkering with the ball? How light do they want it to be? They’ll be playing football with beach balls soon!

  96. They already do in Sunderland…

  97. 1 loose cannon

I have watched that Maicon goal few times I’m not convinced he meant it if you watch it in slow motion you will see when he hit the ball his body was slightly facing towards the box. He meant to cross it into the box. Its hard to tell for sure but that what I think.
So far not team is very convincing apart from the Germans but they were playing the Aussies who were poor. Brazil today they huffed and puffed flicked and tricked, had all the possession but did not create a lot apart from that sublime pass from Robhino for the 2nd goal.
I guess the real tournament starts after the group stages.

I do like the new away kit.

  98. It’s not the ball; according to Adidas, it’s the altitude otherwise the ball would behave perfectly.

Just to make sure everyone understands:

The manufacturer has created a product that is perfect but absolutely useless in the environment in which it is intended to be used.

Does anyone have the phone number of the nearest Trading Standards Office to Fifa – they might need it…

  99. Despite being the overwhelming underdogs, N Korea did not play “two banks of four” as practised by the golden boy-coach of the English press, “dear leader Jose.” They tried their best to be an offensivve threat when they had the ball. Despite Maicon’s wonder goal, I am not convinced by Brazil. Not yet anyway.

If they remain this organized and positive they may upset Portugal or the Ivory Coast who it seems adopted conventional wisdom by assuming a plunder of goals from the seeming no-hopers from the Korean peninsula.

  100. We’ve heard the same thing at every international tournament for decades. They must have been playing with blocks of concrete in the 70s. The strange thing is, the poor fans get battered by wayward shots just the same year after year.

  101. Someone is going to be embarrassed by the North Koreans, and I am hoping it will be the fake Ronaldo and Co.

  102. Don’t worry, YW… we play at Green Point Stadium on Friday, altitude: zero metres. And then we’re at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday, again zero altitude.

Compare that to say, the Danes, who’ve had Soccer City, next up Loftus Versfeld, and their final group game at Royal Bafokeng – all of which are well over 4,000ft above sea level… we can consider our own selves pretty lucky.

  103. He definitely meant it. He’s made a career out of bombing forward and getting shots on goal. He looked up, saw noone arriving unmarked, saw the keeper’s left a gap, thought, I’ll twat it at goal…. bang. If Torres or RVP had done it there’s no way anyone would be doubting his intention to score.

  104. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the Portugeezers. They have a proven difficulty at scoring goals especially organized defensive teams. But whoever gets embarassed (Portugal or Ivory Coast) I am going to chuckle at the look on their faces and their supporters

  105. A while back I saw a documentary about the North Korean team of 1966. Watching that I fell in love with that squad and watching the game tonight I love this current NK team. They never gave up, defended magnificently, and scored past the mighty brazil. Here’s hoping they can replicate and surpass their ’66 exploits.

“For 90 minutes, let forget the politics”

  106. I really hope that North Korea manages upsets against both Portugal and Ivory Coast (Sorry to Eboue, no sorry to Didi D.). I really would like to see them progress to the next round. And North Korea should be an example to teams like Stoke or Hull. They are the big underdogs, playing against the team that has won the WC more than any other and they fought admirably — and most importantly — without breaking somebody’s leg. No overly hard challenges, very fair. A team like that gets respected, teams like Stoke or Hull only laughed at.

  107. Maicon meant that. I think he scored a similar goal this year for Inter.

If Ronaldo is not sorrounded by other good players he’s shit. He should kiss Rooney’s ass for getting his Ballon d’Or. Plus he’s a diving piece of shit.

  108. Gainsbourg, it’s just another reminder that football is a team game and you need the other 10 players, no matter how good you are, to make a difference. The same player in the wrong set up is just not as effective.

  109. “For 90 minutes, let forget the politics” Well said Gadget.

  110. What is it with the English people? You value battery and assault over skill with the ball. When said mentality causes injury to people there is very little debate over whether the perpetrator “meant it”. See how ramsey was portrayed by the press as being stuck up and unsporting for blanking the thug that attempted to end his footballing career, complete with improbably testimonials that said thug was “just playing hard”.

And yet when anyone who actually is capable with the ball does something amazing, you create newspaper headlines questioning whether they “meant it”?

Yes, Maicon meant it. And no, nobody on the England team could ever have conceived of it, let alone executed it. Maybe Joe Cole, if we want to be generous. But yes, Maicon meant to do it – and did so. Now move on and stop playa hating!!!
