Arsenal At The World Cup #1: Dennis Bergkamp v Argentina 1998

The first in a series leading up to the World Cup finals in South Africa, less than a fortnight away now: Classic Arsenal moments at previous World Cup finals and no better place to start than the maestro’s last minute goal against Argentina at France 1998.

Sometimes words don’t add anything to a moment although the Dutch commentary on this conveys the emotion of the moment superbly, even if you don’t understand a word of it. Aside from ‘Frank de Boer’, ‘Ball’ and ‘Dennis Bergkamp’.

  1. I remembered where I was on the day of that game. I can never forget the awesomeness of watching Bergkamp’s goal. and how much of a cheat the Argentines where in the game

  2. Tempting but no, you might get a complex…

  3. Wish this finals had been France vs the Dutch. Brazil were a let down in the finals…

  4. YW can i put in a special request to go above bigbrovar???? pleaaaasseeeeeeeeee

  5. I think that Dutch team was probably up there with their classes of 78-78 and 88. The football that they churned out in the world cup and in Euro 2000 was nothing short of sublime, culminating in a display against Brazil where they outplayed the world champions for long stretches.

That bunch deserved a major trophy, but somehow fell short at the semi final hurdle to teams they should really have beaten.

  6. DENNIS BERGKAMP!!
    DENNIS BERGKAMP!!

  7. I’m sure YW was first ahead of BigB

An interesting story about the commentators reaction – Jack van Gelder, the dutch commentator, heard on the radio, that Dennis had scored a few seconds earlier, and hence his reaction was, in a way “pre-meditated”. A good reaction anyways – a la Victor H Morales!

I remember vividly watching this game on the telly and what a goal it was.

For me, Dennis Bergkamp was not the best player who ever played for Arsenal, He was the best player who ever played in the entire premiere league. Full stop.

  9. Emperor Gooner

i was dreading today like anything because of all the mourinho bullcrap that was bound to follow after his press conference…..the guy is a good coach fine but he’s an arrogant c*nt too..just look at his statements…almost everything he says is only about himself but he masks it in a way that it sounds like he’s a team guy….what a shame!!

i can’t wait to see him be an absolute failure at madrid when they go trophyless this season and he gets the axe..really really cant wait!!

  10. What a legend! Of all the Arsenal players, I respect him the most. Denis, the greatest Arsenal player ever!

  11. bigbrovar’s “first” doesn’t count as his posts are permanently attached to Yogi’s blog.

  12. with all respect to henry dennis bergkamp is the greatest player who have ever wore an arsenal shirt

  13. DB10 was, is & always will be god. Amen

  14. i remembered that time my hero overmas was even outshoned by zenden…. great dutch team who was unlucky not to make the final

  15. it’s moments like that that remind us why we love the beautiful game. thanks DB10

  16. My wife and I were staying in a …small hotel in Hampstead North London…my wife had gone shopping and I was watching the game in our small but adequate bedroom on a small screen TV…Ihad ben shouting at the Argentine team for their dirty tactics but when DB scored that goal I screemed so loudly that the Hotel Manager came to see what was hapeening…as my wife was not with me I could not claim it had been a noisy climax to teatime sex…when I told him the reason he said I think in French something about stupid English supporting the Dutch!

  17. all things considered…. the best goal i’ve ever seen by the best player i’ve ever seen. ‘ nough said.

  18. La petite mort.

A moment enough to give you one.

  19. amazing! how he touched the ball under the dudes foot is crazy!

What a player, one of the greatest ever!

  20. LimparAssist

One of my favourite ever goals. Totally efficient and utterly exquisite.

    …or should that be totaally…

    Cool idea, YW.

  21. Agree wholeheartedly with LA…. exquisite.

my jaw hit the floor in disbelief while watching that game. It just all happened so quick, route one at its best.

Great idea YW, that commentary has put a huge smile on my face.

    DB10, simply the best.

  22. Wonderful goal. I remember where I was too… cellebrating my 10th birthday on holiday at woolicombe bay…I got Sega Worldwide soccer for my saturn that year. : )

VP11 is very similar in terms of technique and ability. He will become an all time great of the same ilk I’m sure.

This world cup could be Holland’s. The prospective semi’s if Holland make it are juicy.

  23. not as good as the one in his hat-trick against leicster. ;)

  24. DB10 is the greatest player that I have actually seen play in an Arsenal shirt. He will always be the greatest player on one of the best teams in football history.

    Limpar:

I know you like Holland. RVP please come back healthy. Any real “sleeper” picks?

I have a feeling there will be lots of very low scoring games. Here in the US all the major sports made some rule changes as team defense became more and more dominant. Baseball went through a “dead ball era” where the number of runs scored and the number of hits went way down. They lowered the pitchers mound and actually juiced up the baseball. In basketball they made zone defenses illegal and made the 3 point shot. In American football they made it harder to cover the recievers and made rules to protect the quarterbacks. Traditionalists all screamed when these things happened but it has made the game more fun for fans.

Hopefully football will make some changes that favor attacking and make it less desirable to “park the bus”. Enlarge the goal and change the rules so that the goons can not hurt our players at will. I love Arsenal to play defense but I would love it even more to see all teams have to start playing football with us.

  25. That is what I love about football. Such emotion!
    DENNIS BERGKAMP!!
