Cesc: The Final Ultimatum and Transfer Rumour Round-Up

A quiet Sunday morning transfer wise as those who wield the pen look to blight the England 2018 World Cup bid by carrying on about the state of the Wembley pitch and Hapless Triesmann’s comments about Spanish and Russian attempts to bribe their way to success whilst having an inability to keep his trousers on outside of the marital bedroom. And people complained that he was not a real footballing man.

The usual suspects are emerging from the shadows as domestic seasons around the continent draw to their conclusion, not least of which is the first ultimatum from Barcelona to Cesc Fàbregas that he must join this Summer or else. Presumably that is in no way related to the ultimatums that have been issued by the Catalans in previous transfer windows.

A surprisingly astute observation from Andy Dunn in this morning’s News of the World is that Fàbregas’ future is already resolved; it’s called four years remaining on his contract. It’s almost as naïve as the view that Cesc will request a transfer from Arsenal, foregoing all “loyalty” bonuses in the process which is the angle taken by the story in this morning’s Mail on Sunday.

Elsewhere, the English grit so desired in a centre back is apparently going to arrive in the shape of Phil Jagielka, touted at around the £15m-£16m mark. Presumably the rationale is that Arsène will have noted how well John Terry fared with the referee yesterday having put the boot in and not even been told. Mind you, with Terry’s previous he would no doubt have enjoyed the slap on the wrist…

So far we have seen Sebastian Frey and Yaya Toure re-emerge from the shadows and Summer just wouldn’t be Summer if Philippe Mexès was not rumoured to be signing. We’ll have to wait for that though won’t we? Nope, the Italian season is over this evening and with AS Roma still involved in the Serie A title bunfight, the rumour once more surfaces. Reports that the source was a Portuguese man speaking to a journalist at Linate on the way to Madrid remain unconfirmed.

With the goalkeeping situation apparently up for grabs, Arsène’s favourite colour is Green according to persistent rumours. The manager recently conducted a quickfire question and answer session over the phone, his favourite clothing being a bandana and album, The Faces “Ooh La La” were misheard by eavesdropping journalists which is how Mandanda and Toulalan got themselves onto the back pages.

’til Tomorrow.

Jordan was talking to Arsene in a London bar last night and she stated that she supported Arsenal. He replied”Do you Katie?”

And then we are rumoured to be after Kiev Defender Diakhate.

It’s funny how these things get out of hand

  3. Phil Jagielka would be a fantastic signing.

  4. Walking Wounded

Mr Wenger was asked when he was on a night out did he prefer wine or shorts. Wenger said he prefered shorts with mixers.

Now we are signing Phillipe Mexes from Roma

And he was asked about his holidays plans and he said he was going to Peru to Hunt a Llama

    Nuff said

  5. Are they going to protest after the final of the emirates cup then? and what if we win it?? surely that will stop them moaning about winning nothing!!

  6. Interesting photo of Michael Ballack posted yesterday. I’d forgotten that he’d tried out for a part in Brokeback Mountain.

  7. Walking Wounded

Jagielka is too similar to Vermaelen for my liking. We need that out and out defender!

  8. Why not drink wine while wearing shorts?

  9. Sixth or seventh?

  10. I’m bored already.

  11. That wasn’t Ballack’s first involvement in the entertainment industry. Back in Germany, he sings in some kind of tribute band called Die dörflich menschen.

  12. Er zieht auf Fulham um?

  13. Walking Wounded

Wenger went to fancy dress party with gardening as the theme.

    He went as a mower.

Then we rumoured to be interested in Udinese Midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah.

Oh Come on guys. I am bored at work and at least trying to get things going!

  14. I didn’t realise the month between the season ending and the world cup starting would feel so long. I’ve taken to learning about science via They Might Be Giants.

  15. If he goes hopefully we get Yaya as part of the deal. Then sign Gourcuff as a replacement followed by the signings of Neuer, Mertesacker and maybe Micah Richards.

That’s my wishlist although it is highly unlikely we will sign one of these players.

  16. with the spanish season over tonight expect insane escalation in the cesc to barca, cesc has barca dna, barca gives arsenal ultimatum over cesc (as if hes their player already and we are just keeping him warm for them all these years) cesc will join before the world cup shite – its gonna be so much fun

  17. Mr Wenger was caught by the paparazzi sitting on the toilet when he was on a night out.

The next morning Arsenal were rumoured to be after Bolton Wanderers Defender Danny Shittu.

  18. silly season is in full swing. Triesmann, Blatter and Barca are in good company in trying to outdo each other in the stupid comments department. I sincerely hope we can conclude all signings before the world cup but then that will be asking a lot. And will Chamakh be playing will he wont he like Nasri at the last World Cup to get higher wages.

I think I will go with Arsene with the selection. Any speculation is always fruitless and wrong. Heres to a few more amazing off the radar signings and no more nauseating reruns of Lumphard and JT celebrating.COYG

  19. We will have to make do eith

  20. Well I’m just glad Arsene isn’t into Death Metal. God Knows what player we’d end up linked with if he liked Stench Tabernacle.

Still, he went into Robert Dyas the other day to buy a Morphy Richards kettle…oh, Longman’s way ahead of me on that one.

  21. If Cecs ask to leave which I doubt he will do we would have to place a tag Barca would be reluctant to pay. We are a big club not one that help other clubs groom players. Cecs is too vital to let go now and no matter who we sign he won’t fill his boot easily. You don’t get the odd 19 goals and 18 assists from a new signing. I expect this Cecs thing to go the way of Thiery Henry. Wenger hardly let a player go against his wish, Cecs won’t be an exception. As for the rumours they make a good read when you have got time to spare. Nothing more to it. What I search for is when terms have been agreed or every outlet saying anybody signed. The official confirmation is normally 1 week late, that I can’t always wait for.

  22. He nipped into his local coffee bar and found himself linked with Costa from Shahktar. Popped into Waitrose to buy some beans so we’re buying Heinze, got arrested with a spray can which led to speculation that we were signing Grafite and it doesn’t take too much guessing to find out what he was doing that led to speculation that we were after the Cameroon international, Bong…

  23. I’m not sure that it would be in Cesc’s best wishes to go to Barcelona just yet.I would have thought that a couple more seasons of Xavi and Inesta before he would ideally fit into the system. But you can understand his frustration given the last two seasons at Arsenal.Hopefully a definitive strengthening of the ranks around him might persuade him to stay.Although this shouldn’t really be on the basis of “one more year” like previous captains before him-this didn’t work for either player or club.

  25. Walking Wounded

Wenger was thrown out of a casino for cheating in Liverpool, afterwards he dived into a swimming pool. Cheating and Diving. We must be after Gerrard.

  26. Is it possible that Henrys place in the Barca team will be taken by Iniesta? If so, Fab would slot in nicely for them…
I think we really need Cesc to stay. As it is, we will probably be making a change in GK, and adding a new centre half. As it is, we are talking about adding a midfielder to Song and Cesc, and Diaby dropping to the bench….If we lose Cesc, we will have so many changes in our team, it will take too much time to get right. Fabregas is needed to make sure the few players we do add are helped learn our style and bed in.
Fabregas must stay! This isnt champ manager…we need to make the right changes, not the wrong ones!

  27. Flint McCullough

    Nice perspective, YW.

I rely on you to sort all this out, at this time of year.

Early close season reminds me of Tony Hancock’s “Boring Sunday”.

Nothing to do but little jobs I am not in the mood to get on with.

I could watch that proceesion at Monaco, might see AW on DD’s yacht, maybe Cesc will be there too.

  28. Arsene was asked by a reporter if Cesc was going to Barcelona. Arsene sarcastically said “Yeah Yeah”. Thats how they got the swap deal rumour

  29. Arsene Wenger bought a DVD for Hazard perception for his daughter’s upcoming driving test. That must mean Eden Hazard is on his way to Arsenal this summer

  30. A reporter asked Wenger what Arsenal have won in the last 3 years. “Nothing”, Wenger replied.

Arsenal are now rumoured to be in for Czech veteran defender Milan Fukal.

  31. Ahead of their match this evening, Pep Guardiola said he would be over the moon if they won but sick as parrot if they lost.

Strikes me that he’s talking Clichy’s…

  32. Apaparently Arsene has phoned Ancelotti to see if he can buy any midfielders. The Italian accused him of taking the Mikel…

  33. He bumped into a pretty young thing in McDonald’s. Now we’re signing Fabian Lustenberger from Hertha Berlin.

Sorry just been reading the Fifa Provisional World Cup squad list…

    Stop the Press

Wenger ha been studying Australian vet skils.

His thesis was on the joints of baby kangeroos

    Hello Rooney

  35. This has all gone a bit Karl Pilkington’s Rockbusters.

  36. Walking Wounded

    On a serious note!

At what point is what Barcelona doing “tapping up”.

UEFA should give them a transfer embargo on their outrageous break of the rules

  37. We pay the highest ticket prices in the country only to watch jokers like Almunia, Fabianski, Denilson, Diaby, Eduardo, Rosicky, Traore and Sylvestre.

  38. We are gradually becoming a feeder club to Barcelona.

Arsene Wenger’s unquestionable faith in below average players is gradually destroying the club. Can you blame Cesc? I don’t think he will continue another year of playing alongside these clowns. Ashley Cole should be laughing now.

  39. Go away Howard.

  40. Haven’t we just given Cesc a new contract with a substantial rise that was back dated resulting in a £3 million quid lump sum?

We’re hardly likely to sell him after that.

  41. Maturks – Your arguments are contradictory. If our players are crap why are Barca so interested in taking them?

  42. It’s interesting how a media outlet without an agenda or looking for hits with sensationalist translations manages to present Cesc’s comments in a different context

    http://www.whtimes.co.uk/sport/football/premier_league_arsenal_cesc_fabregas_on_barcelona_rumours_1_301896

  43. Walking wounded, I have lost all respect for Barcelona for the way they constantly try to de-stabilize our players. I know our players sometimes don’t help themselves with their ambiguous comments but they are not trained diplomats. I understand why they would not want to close doors to future opportunities, but the jackals in the media have no scruples and are just waiting for the slightest opening to start their tapping up on behalf of their favourites.

  44. hope when he goes to barca they become a shitty fuckin time……xavi shags inesta’s wife……and guardiola is caught having a 3some with xavi and puyols wife..fuckin idiots. and barca doesnt win shit and we knock them out of the champions league in 3 successive years!!!!!!!!!!FUCK U BARCA!!!!!!!!!

  45. Wow!

  46. A truly barbarian response from Osama. Excellent.

  47. Guillem Balague studied his used toilet paper after a dump.

Next thing you know he has material for his blog

  48. great post yogi.

Yes i was quite shocked when flicking through the ne*s *f t*e wor*d today in Asda to see Andy Dunn talking a bit of sense.

Its a shame that some players dont seem to grasp that you cant get much higher than Arsenal before its too late. Hleb? Flamini?

  49. Good point Deano, at least Hleb had the good grace to admit it. Has Flamini ever expressed regret over his decision? As much as I love the current formation/team, I’ve never enjoyed watching us as much as when the midfield was Fabregas – Flamini – Rosicky – Hleb. Liquid football!

  50. This is well worth a read, although the ones who need to read it probably won’t and even if they do, they will choose not to believe it

  51. LimparAssist

  52. In Africa when a foreigner comes down here and claims to like it they tend to marry into the society. Now how come Cesc hasn’t got a good English girl yet? At least Henry got one and wouldn’t have left had things worked out! Or is the problem that English girls are too cold for hot Spanish men?

  53. Spanish men are even more sexist than racist. Also, their stubby legs are considered unattractive.

  54. Really Poliziano? Gave me a real laugh, I enjoyed that!

  55. KG, I think it’s a spurious suggestion. Cesc seems happy enough with his long-term Catalan girlfriend. Footballers have to be willing to move with their jobs and I assume their other halves understand that goes with the territory, so the nationality of their spouses is immaterial.

  56. Poliziano, being based in Italy, how much do you know about Buffon’s form and injury record last season? A lot of Arsenal fans are clamouring for him, but I kind of wonder given that Juve finished 7th whether they are just basing that desire on his reputation rather than his current ability?

  57. Passenal appears you don’t have much of a sense of humour, loosen up man! It a slow day on aclf.

  58. Sorry KG, the ‘humour’ in your post obviously went over my head!

  59. Are you watching Ateeb?

  60. *

  61. I cant beleive this.

  62. Obviously, Bob. Bit boring now, eh? Haven’t seen Australia ever been outplayed like this. Amazing stuff. You can stop kicking them now.

  63. Are you based in Italy Poliziano???

  64. LimparAssist

I’m going to be watching Cameroon with great interest this summer. They’ve got a very difficult group, unfortunately for them – with strong Dutch and Danish sides to contend with. Whether they progress or not though, we’ll see some powerful, talented players for at least three massive games.

I have this little hunch that Arsenal might move for one of Alex Song’s Cameroon teammates. Pure fantasy on my part this but you’ve got; Nicolas N’Koulou who’s had a great season with Monaco at centreback, Stephane M’bia winning the league under Deschamps at Marseille, again at centreback (but started the season playing in midfield), and the other is Eyong Enoh, defensive midfielder at Ajax. All french-speaking (which is a good start at Arsenal), and most importantly they all know Alex, one of our leaders at the back.

I was thinking, rather fancifully I know but… imagine a defence made up entirely of Alex Songs. An impassable wall of style and guile! You’d never get the ball off them.

I can’t think how to realise my ‘Team Song’ dream, so the best I think we could do is sign one of his countrymen, one of his mates, a protege to his Obi Wan.

…so there you are, a little random nugget of transfer whimsy for you.

  65. All in good taste Passenal apology accepted.

  66. Good call LA except every 2 years when the ACN rolls around and we lose them at a key point in the season!

  67. Ateeb

When it comes to sporting matters, one can never kick an Aussie hard enough.

    YW

  68. Gah, beat me to it Yogi!

It’s never the time to stop kicking an Aussie on a cricket pitch.

  69. Cricket has come home!!! well done the english, (ahem)lads.

  70. I guess you both are wiser than me when it comes to the Aussies. We learned our lessons recently when we stopped kicking. What is peculiar about this Australian cricket team, is that to me all other nations unite against them? No one really wants them to win. What other national team is hated so much by others?

That was a dull match. On the other hand Messi equaled Ronaldo’s goal scored record.

  71. *Lesser Ronaldo.

  72. Saw Inter win serie A for the fifth season in a row. Lyon mark2! Talk of a league turning boring.

  73. England have won the WC!

Some real Gr*t there from Kieswetter, Pietersen & , er, Collingwood. .
    Andy Flower, Mushy, etc…
these guys must have grown up surrounded by Gr*t.

    C”MON!

  74. LimparAssist

Ah, didn’t think of that, Pass. Dream = crushed.

  75. We need to spend big. Let’s borrow 300M quid and assemble a mega galactico team like Real madrid.

    What?

What do you mean they won fuck all?

    300M and they won nothing?

  76. The England team’s 1st 5 players only have 1 English born player amongst them.

  77. So is Mourinho off to Spain to repeat the trick with RM? It’s easy to win with an unlimited budget and no real competition. I’d like to see him do the same with no budget to speak of, then we’d see how good he really is.

  78. The thing is Duke, how many of the Aussies have English grandparents?

  79. I cannot see Real Madrid fans putting up with Maureen Yo football for long.

  80. You can’t play that game dups. How many English people/players have Pakistani/ Indian parents.

Doesn’y make them any less English does it?

It’s a multi cultural, very mobile world.

    They wear the shirt.

  81. I agree CB. I should have added in my comment that it does not matter to me where they are born.

  82. Hahaha……Aussies just got players from English descent, then? NOt much multicultural.

  83. That’s right Ateeb.

Really England have dominated World Cricket ever since the Windies were on top!

  84. Mind you, if ever you meet an Aussie, according to them they are all of Irish descent.

Absolute bollocks of course. The Yanks claim the same.

  85. we just need the football to follow suit and get these players early from overseas. every country has players born from other countries. Portugal have deco, croatia have eds and wales have giggs. and ireland had townsend, houghton…..aldridge……whealan……dunne

  86. Kitchen Sink

Ateeb it seems messi has scored 49 this season__ I’m sure its been quite a while since someone in a top team has scored that many..

  87. I might be impressed if he managed that in a more competitive league KS. Let’s see what he does at the WC.

  88. Duke, you missed that great Irishman Cascarino

  89. My main home is in Montepulciano; but since I work abroad at the moment, I only spend a short time there each year. I don’t really follow Italian club football, so I don’t feel able to say much about Buffon. As I understand it, he has played well this season for the most part, although he did have one notable dip in form, possibly due to injury. He has been excellent for at least some of the time, so I don’t believe he is past it just yet. Felipe Melo is blamed by many Juventus fans for their club’s poor performance this season. He has indeed been woeful, but it is absurd to blame one player for the underachievement of a whole team. I’d be surprised if Buffon left Juventus. Remember he stayed during the club’s period of disgrace, even though he was one of the biggest names in world football at the time.

  90. For those who say we have no money, I have the perfect solution:

    In:

    Buffon 20m
    Cahill 8m + Wilshire & Lansbury loan
    Kjaer 10m
    Y. Toure 12m
    Wellington (nom.)
    Chamake free
    Campbell free

    Out:

    Almunia 7m
    Fabianski 5m
    Gallas Free
    Silvestre 1m
    Diaby 5m
    Eduardo 8m
    Traore 5m
    Denilson 8m
    Rosicky 8m
    Simpson 2m
    Barazite 1m
    Gilbert 0m
Wilshire, Conquelin, Bothelo, Lansbury, Frimpong, Eastmond, Sunu, Emmanuel Thomas (Loan)

    50m – 50m = 0

    Net Spend: 0 !!!!!

Come on Wenger, you know it makes sense.

If I can see it, why can’t Wenger ?

  91. Messi is the new Clive Allen.

  92. Kitchen Sink

well Pass it’s one of the top three leagues in the world, although I’m sure when someone last achieved that feet playing for an English team one could claim the spanish or italian leagues were more competitive..

What’s true is he is yet to show that kind of form playing for Argentina..

  93. We Are Arsenal!!!!

  94. It’s a top league with only 2 teams really in it KS. They have so much money because of their TV deals that the next best team is miles away. Players like Messi are also protected in Spain in a way that creative players in the PL are not. I’m just saying that individual and team achievements have to be assessed in context.

  95. stench tabernacle
    ……..hahahahahahhahahahaha.

I was just listening to Ooh La La this morning……

  96. Kitchen Sink

true Passenal the players in spain are protected but its top football competition and so the players should be.. England could do with some “protection” of the players as I feel it would raise the standard of quality.. If you look at the individual he has performed consistantly well against teams inside and outside of spain and has made the top 3 world players of the year for the passed 4 years.. Individually he’s easily been the 1 of the best players of the modern era..

  97. KS,

It’s a big accomplishment, but he’s not invincible. His performance against English teams hasn’t been that good. Except for the one against us. He was anonymous against Chelsea last season, one of the bigger games, and same against Inter Milan. Two of the teams that so to speak play anti-football. Something our players play against week in week out.

  98. I’m not questioning his credentials as a top player KS, but I do think he has had it easier playing in Spain. I just wish the PL tried to showcase talents like that rather than lauding the ‘spoiling’ tactics of the lesser lights.

  99. Cb,

I’ll keep that in mind. Haven’t seen England win a big tournament in my living memory. Although I have lost interest in Cricket substantially, since our golden generation of Wasim, Waqar, Imran, Saqlain, Saeed Anwar, e.t.c ended their careers. These new generation of Pakistani cricketers over the past 5-7 years hasn’t impressed me, except for a few players. Too much politics in our national cricket federation. Corrupt army officials have been given the chairman seat, who knew jack shit about management or cricket in general.

  100. Kitchen Sink

Passenal I would say its different playing in spain some players do well some not so well.. There are still plenty of good players playing there outside of the top two..

Ateeb no player is invincible__It’s easy to find games when a player hasn’t made a big influence on a game although he did provide the winning assist against chelsea last season..

  101. Good players, but not good teams KS or their league would be much closer. I’m not suggesting we haven’t had times like that in the PL, but most matches are a foregone conclusion.

  102. Kitchen Sink

Yes Passenal world class players, where as the teams on the England said have good chemistry but many average players..

Not long ago Wenger said that he feels Messi is playing more consistantly than Maradona at this level which is tremendous praise from a manager who has proven time and time again that he knows talent..

  103. at least our bowlers were english… i mean english born obviously.

  104. Loved The Small Faces clip, i forgot how good Steve Marriott was!

Tin Soldier was my personal favourite!

  105. I had the misfortune to get stuck in traffic trying to cross Wandsworth Bridge today. A jam caused by some parade through the streets over some team in blue, it looked like. Anyway, judging by their expressions you would never think their team had won something. Never have I seen a more miserable, stoney-faced bunch of people in a parade! What’s the point of that?!! And making me an hour late for lunch….

  106. Mingus,

I saw some of it on TV. Not really much of a crowd considering it was their one & only (hopefully) double.

  107. Passenal – that’s my local paper you’re linking to! Proud you’re pleased with their reporting (I used to work there long ago) but no idea why they’re reporting Arsenal news – we’re in Hertfordshire!

  108. Pierre,

The training ground is at Shenley in Hertfordshire.

  109. We mock Real Madrid but can you imagine how gutted you’d be if your club got 96 pts in the league & ended up trophiless?

That said, I think Real Madrid need a goalkeeper, a central defender, a holding midfielder & a proper striker.

  110. Real Madrid’s spend-big policy will never work. They need some 21 year old French & African players.

  111. Real Madrid need to demonstrate their ambition by prioritising the domestic cup competitions

  113. For as long as El Chipolata plays for Real Madrid, I’ll continue to laugh at their every defeat.

  114. Phil Jagielka anyone? Er… right, yeah, didn’t think so – sorry. Fucking stupid suggestion really.

  115. Shit! Logan’s leaked the shortlist!

Oh no… half a second. You almost had me going there. Tal Ben Haim and Ricardo Rocha? That’s too far a leap for even one so gullible in silly season as I.

  116. @Logan: SERIOUSLY? That smacks of a FM 2010 shortlist. Oh wait, my game’s shortlist doesn’t even have many of those players! Oops.

    Ridiculous.

  117. thats not my shortlist, the defenders there are all linked in transfer rumours to arsenal some way or the other.

simon kjaer can come for 12mil (buy out clause good deal)

Mamadou Sakho is talented but a rough edge
    Norvdeit will return

    chamackh is coming

only yaya toure may be expensive
