Arshavin & Szczesny Ahead Of Manchester City

Manchester City loom on the horizon, a chance to put the recent spate of defeats behind the team. They may possibly face a trio of former Arsenal players, fired up for the occasion with Adebayor already being told to ignore provocation from the stands, something he will most probably not be able to do. With his attitude in the encounter at Eastlands, it is hard, nay impossible, to have any sympathy for the reception he will most likely get, a contrast with the ones that you would expect to be handed to Vieira and Toure.

Andrey Arshavin is expected to return, the usual “50:50″ applied to his fitness which realistically means that he is about 80% sure of turning out with several days to go. Were he to take his place in the starting line-up alongside Robin van Persie and Alex Song, it would be a massive boost to the squad, something that they are in desperate need of following recent performances.

The Dutchman’s absence was highlighted as key failing this season:

He had a big impact last season and he has done well before his injury, so he is showing his quality. It would be easier for us [if we had not had the injuries]. I cannot say we would be champions but it would be easier for us.

You cannot help but agree with those observations but it was the number of simultaneous injuries which finally put paid to the season’s challenges. Losing several key players at the same time is detrimental and highlighting that is not a search for excuses, merely stating  a reason that the campaign has tailed off.

Depth of the squad is a difficult area to assess with injuries and Premier League rules governing squad sizes will not help Arsenal one jot if this and previous seasons are anything to go by. When this happens though, it is up to experienced and talented personalities within the squad to impose themselves on games, helping inexperienced colleagues through. Arshavin falls into this category but does not always assert himself. Playing out of position showed a willingness to cover injuries and undoubtedly does not suit the Russian’s game but at times, he seems almost ambivalent.

He assessed the season as ‘not bad‘ for the club; I wonder how he would view his contribution? The same? Better than average. He set high standards and like a host of talented players before him, has failed to meet them every game. Scoring four at Anfield raised unrealistic expectations, no-one is going to carry out that feat every week but it gave an indication of his capabilities.

Wojciech Szczesny is confident he can become Arsenal Number 1 next season, provided he is given his chance:

I believe that if I had been given a chance at Arsenal before I came [to Brentford], I would have been good enough. I just came here to prove it. Hopefully some people – including Arsene Wenger – will see me in that number one place next year. I’ve said before that you need to learn the basics in this league to then take that back to Arsenal.

You might have seen in recent months that Arsenal goalkeepers have had problems with the basics.

It seems the Pole has been to the Jens Lehmann School of Charm when assessing his rivals. Were he to be promoted to first choice ‘keeper next season, I suspect uproar may be the outcome in certain quarters. Looking at the Bayern v Lyon match last night, Lloris showed some good reflexes and reactions mixed in with suspect judgement on crosses; much the same as we have now although the Frenchman is more consistent that either Almunia or Fabianski to be the French national team goalkeeper.

Can Wenger take the risk with either of his current first choices next season? I do not believe so. Both suffer mistakes on a regular basis which are costly, all goalkeepers do but neither of the duo are instilling confidence and this must spread to the back four, perhaps explaining some of the collective lapses. The mischievous have a theory that Almunia’s current injury is similar to that which Lehmann suffered shortly after his mistakes against Fulham and Blackburn. Arsène seems to have a high tolerance when it comes to goalkeeping errors but once that is breached, there is no coming back for the custodian in question.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. first.. am back haha

  2. Szczesny seems to have confidence in the bucket load which cannot be a bad thing!! but at still 19 that for me is far to early to be a number 1!! and plaese stop with wanting lloris, every game i watch him in he gets nowhere near crosses, every keeper should be a good shot stoper so then you have to look and see if they dominate their area and how they organise the back 4!! this is were almunia and flapianski fail…can anyone name a proper keeper because there are not to many out there?!

  3. My article of why I think there’s something very deeply wrong with Arsenal
    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/382494-theres-something-very-wrong-with-this-arsenal-side

  4. and your man sissoko for lyon did not impress me at all last night and i do not see him as a future arsenal player

  5. I thought arhavins chances of turning up was always 50:50?

  6. Ditch Fabianski, sign a new top keeper, install almunia as no 2, Vito as number 3 to play in the cups and give the big Pole another season to learn the basics down the leagues.

  7. “Every player you ever comment about who is not with Arsenal is either crap or a “donkey” or a twat or some other colorful descriptive term.”

That isn’t true at all, Bill. There are a great many wonderful footballers who have never played for Arsenal. Roy Keane isn’t even close to being one of them.

And ‘twat’ is not an adjective. Although they can be colourful.

  8. Nacer scored the two best goals for the Arsenal reserves this season, according to Nick Teale:

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/reserves-top-five-goals-of-the-season

  9. Casillas was Real’s goalkeeper at 18. If you’re good enough you’re old enough.

  10. True, LimparAssist. The adjective would be twatish, twat-like, or perhaps twatine.

  11. For example, in the Ferguson era, Andrei Kanchelskis was a player who I enjoyed watching very much. A quick, unselfish, skillful winger who I’d happily pay to watch.

I think he fell out with Fergie at the end of his time with Utd, which is yet more testimony to his good character.

  12. Szczęsny seems to have a level head and great competitive attitude. Something I would like to see more of. A great shot stopper for sure with his quick reactions and 6’5 frame. Appartently he’s not the shy type but have yet to witness his comand of the box. I think he could be ready for us next year at no.1 but wengers knows best.

    good feature on him here:

  13. I agree with Bob, Szczesny has the same view of his own ability Bendtner has. If he can command his 18 yard box, pull off superb saves and generally fill his back four with confidence then what’s the point of sending him out elsewhere for another year?

  14. i and my friends always urgue that Szczesny should be no 1 and manone no 2,Fabianski no3 and Alumunia no4 ,either way the 2 young keepers should be 1 and 2, i will never forget manone against Fulham this season, he did wonders .

  15. Fuck off James.

  16. Fabianski should be sold so loan him out to raise his profile and value. another tidy accademy profit.

  17. Szczęsny won’t go on loan again. The way his loan to Brentford was done a month at a time (at the beginning) shows that Wenger was reluctant to let him go.

  18. Almunia number 4?! Don’t be mental. He’s a sturdy understudy to someone else as he proved during Lehmann’s last couple of years. While Don Vito definitely got us the points at Fulham, he made a few errors in subsequent games suggesting he still has work to do.

  19. Szczęsny seems confident enough, but at his age it will be ideal for him to spend 3-4 years as number 2 goalkeeper playing the CC games and learning from the number 1. My gut feeling is that he is the long term number 1 for Arsenal, but his time will come in a few years, not now.

On a completely different subject, something that the media has decided to overlook in their Mourinho love in. The Inter starting eleven had a sum total of 0 Italians. But as long as it is not Wenger it is fine

  20. I find d keepers name very difficult 2 pronounce but I hope his ability 2 perform will not b d same. Never saw him in action. I wish him well though. Gunners Rule!

  21. Laughable article by james there. As if the comments weren’t enough but that is truely embarrassing.

  22. Poliziano,
Barazite and Szczesny, two more reasons out of many, to feel optimistic. The journey continues way off into the future. I personally would’ve put Aneke’s goal second, but I simply love Barazite’s screamer from 35 yards out.

  23. ….clearly that should read three more reasons!

  24. Arshavin out… oh no !!!

  25. Twatoid, twation, twatosity, twatious….

  26. sorry no Hugo Lloris please.

his display was not all that promising y’day.

    how i miss mad jens.

  27. Not sure I understand this goalkeeping business. Very odd.

  28. they stop the balls going in the net frank.

  29. twatiness

  30. But don’t they have to command areas, distribute the ball, instruct the defenders etc etc …and doesn’t the whole team have to stop the ball going in the net?

  31. Wouldn’t the adjective be James?

  32. YW,

Do you really think Fabianski is now not to be trusted ? 3 high profile errors, including last years semi final of FA Cup… is that a bridge too far ?

I ask the question because I just do not know how many mistakes EVDS, Lehmann, Seaman et al made early on in their careers.

  33. 1.Joe Hart 2.Szczesny 3 Vito

    Sell both Almunia and Fabianski

  34. your right this is confusing!

  35. Mongolian Gooner

@frank Theoretically yes, the whole team have to do that. However, practically, in most situations, the goalkeeper ends up doing it alone.

  36. Is that actually true..er..Mongolian?

  37. surely too much of a risk to sell alumunia and fabianski in the summer considering they were 1 and 2 this year thats quite a change of heart no matter how times they have done a ‘james’

  38. Also..why does Ulaanbaatar have five ‘a’s in it. Bit unnecessary isn’t it? Is it the sound that yaks make?

  39. looks like we need a mangolian keeper coach next year to sort this stuff out

  40. YW – it seems every post I make with the word james in it is subject to moderation… is this true? if so fair play.

  41. I think you pronounce Ulaanbaatar in a similar fashion to ‘Team America – World Police’ pronouce Maaaat Daaaamon

  42. Sebastion Frey would be my choice as No1

Szczesny would be number 2.I would keep Manonne and get rid of Average Al and Nervous Flappy

Wenger seems to take the goalkeeper situation too lightly

  43. UNPRONOUNCED HOPE!

I couldnt put it better than szlrt4ny. The lad has hit the nail on the head on this one. All of arsene’s GKs have been good shotstoppers but flawed, either with tendency for clangers or with no talent on reading the game.

Shotstopping is important but I believe the true quality of a great goalkeeper is his ability to read the game.

We DONT need spectacular goal keepers as many seem to be driving at. We just need a custodian with SAFE HANDS. If he can make the occasional incredible save, great, but the main thing is as the lad said, getting the BASICS right.

This team as a whole needs to learn not to give anything away before it attempts to go for glory.

As gigi buffon says, a good goalkeeper is one that his team can “trust and depend on”. I think szrpzxny has all the ingredients to be a great Keeper, lets hope he fulfils his potential.

If a new keeper is not bought I think he needs to be first choice with vito as back up.

Ah… it also seems arsene is back to his old habits again. I see him defending Flapianski (bless the man who came up with that name, just brilliant).

Lets hope this is just his press talk coz he cant be serious. The clown needs to be kicked out as soon as possible as was evident 2 years ago. I think almunia should be left for arsene to decide.

    Cheers all!!

  44. Nice to see that kind of confidence in an Arsenal keeper. I would much rather see one of our current crop make the role his own than have to spend for an outsider.

How certain is it that eddy is leaving?
Seems to be getting discussed as an inevitability. I would be very sad to see him leave, even if it was just a loan deal.

Let’s keep the squad together hope for less injuries and maybe an extra centreback along with the return of Djourou, who while being out for so long may not put in a full season, but will contribute more than silvestre – I think we’d be laughing.

Let’s not forget the record breaking amount of goals this squad were banging in first part of this season. There’s no reason we can’t do it again but more sustained. Surely we can’t be as unlucky again with injuries next term. I know we always are but our strikers took a large dent this season.

Next season the Vela, Walcott, NB will be that much more older and experienced, not to mention Watt, Sunu… maybe being added into the mix.

If we get chamackhackaha however it’s spelt we may have to many players until injuries occur, so what do you do overcompensate? That has it’s own problems.

Lets not be hasty in demands for more signings, lets keep the squad together and keep the faith.

In Wenger we definately do still trust.

  45. Mongolian Gooner

Well it was just my frustrated observation though. I am not a member of D&G crew. As for the Ulaanbaatar it is two words. Ulaan meaning red, baatar – hero. Am I the only one who think Al would have given up and left if Jens had stayed one more year?

  46. Don’t think its fair to be calling for both Almunia’s and Fabianski’s heads, which is from what I see many fans taking out our frustrating end to the season out on them.

Almunia is not a bad keeper, if he let a goal in that Lloris did last night he would be hanged. The crosses that scared Lloris wouldn’t trouble Al. Some fans must remember the words that we always told our players who think about leaving… “the grass ain’t always greener on the other side”

This team was close to achieving a remarkable and glorious campaign in beating both Man Utd and Chelsea to the title. Every player has contributed this season, let the manager decide who is and who isn’t good enough.

  47. Can someone please give me a run down on the reserves squad…and the players who might get a run in the first team next season….our rather geologically named player Barazite seems hes doing quite well….Ive heard mixed things about lansbury’s time at watford….

  48. that James guy up there is full of self promoting crap..
read his article. wrong grammar, and awful writing..

    please kick him…

  49. Yes, no need for a new GK. I would like to see Szczesny pressurising Almunia all the way to being first choice ‘keeper, next season. And Barazite pressurising anybody who stands in his way to being a first team regular.

  50. I’m pretty sure a lot of people just pick on Almunia because of his looks…

  51. PllllleeeaaSssseeeee arsene, get a half decent keeper!!!! Flappy And manuel cost us points and games. Theyre shite and a half

  52. Thanks Mingus!

  53. Of the five best goals of the season for the reserves, Barazite scored 2 and provided the assists for 2. He was injured when the fifth was scored, otherwise I’m sure he would have been involved.

  54. Rafa Van der Vaart & Titi Henry are available in the summer.

Van der Vaart could be a good backup for Cesc cum competition for Diaby & Nasri.

I’d like Titi back, always hoped he’d be able to move into the Bergkamp role eventually.

  55. Rafael’s surname isn’t appropriate for an English team.

  56. Ole, what role in the 4-3-3 system we currently play would a 33yrd old henry occupy?

  57. Probably the role of doing f*ck all – the same one he played during his last season with us.

  58. Henry .. bad back, can’t run… playing up front on his own in a 4-3-3 .. yeah right.

I’d stick with the increasingly impressive Bendtner and Robin Van Persie. Throw a Chamakh and Eduardo on the bench and we are fine. We only have position to fill,, that is CF, and we have probably the best around if hes not injured. STOP MOANING

  59. - – - – - – Almunia – - – - – - – -
    Sagna Gallas Vermaelen Clichy
    - – Cesc – Song – Nasri – -
Walcott – Van Persie – Arshavin

IF this team played the majority of games we would win the league. Nobody can argue that.

  60. J*mes has got a little excited by two successive victories and this has resulted in a massive increase in Trolling frequency:

    http://goonerholic.com/?p=2368#comment-42300

    p*wned again.

  61. Van der Vaart is a solid central midfield option for us and would fit in nicely for hopefully not huge sums of money… however I would prefer we get a natural wide player as we have plenty of competition in the middle. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – David silva.

Henry would be a complete distraction. I really don’t think his presence would bring stability to the team at all. If this was even being considered I would be very worried indeed.

  62. ‘We had hoped for more, so we can’t be satisfied with third,’ he said. ‘I can only say that next season we must try to solve this problem. It exists, so therefore something must be done.’

    Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1267988/Andrey-Arshavin-ruled-Arsenal-Manchester-City.html?ITO=1490#ixzz0lpYex3ua

  63. All these comments prove is that you have to be mad to be a goalkeeper – one moment you’re a genius and the next useless (Lloris v Bordeaux first leg, then last night).

Let’s not underestimate what we have – Almunia is a decent goalkeeper and his mistakes this season have been greatly exaggerated. However we should buy a real contender for No. 1 and Fabianski has been given several chances to prove he is a challenger and failed comprehensively. Sczcesny looks the real deal but needs a couple more years to gain experience – he looks in a different class from Mannone to me (despite the latter’s one good game). So I would sell Mannone (and Fabianski) and make Sczcesny clear No.3 behind Almunia and AN Other to ensure he is incentivised.

  64. van der Vaart would be a reasonable option…..as long as we get his wife thrown in for free!

  65. SH,

Henry can play in any of the 3 front roles, and perhaps even the Fabregas role if backed with 2 defensive midfielders.

  66. Ole

Speaking rubbish mate. Henry is past it so get over him.

    Big Johan

Yes, Almunia is a decent goalkeeper, but if there is anybody out there available that is better Wenger will know about it. Almunia had a fantastic season last year, and hasn’t really pushed on from there. If Given was a few years younger he would have probably got him.

  67. ChrisGoona,

Bet you said the same about Big Sol.

  68. Next season we will start with Almunia as our #1. I’ll be shocked if that isn’t the case. I dearly hope that Fabianski is not the #2. Szczesny, I think, will jump Mannone in the pecking order, and Almunia will have what he really needs: someone breathing down his neck.

  69. tbf there is a big differance between an ageing forward and an ageing defender.

Also it would just be a media circus all bloody season. We need to look forwards not backwards.

  70. Pleaseeeeee lord give us a half decent keeper and none of those that have fragile minds…………..for the love of god

  71. Ole Gunner

Difference is Sol was training with the 1st team for months. Wenger only signed him up when he knew he was up for it. He don’t take passengers. Henry won’t and should not be bought if he is seen in that regard. His last couple seasons he was a shadow of the Henry you wish to have back.. and that has been the case at Barca too. Henry will go to the States.

  72. Who would you say is a half decent keeper, Max Gunner?

  73. Eddie Gustafsson is half a decent keeper, would that count?

  74. nolagunner

I dont think many have a problem with Almunia being number 1. He was outstanding against Barca in the Champs league, while if you look at Valdes he was pretty poor conceding a relatively poor shot from our Theo when he was called into action once. I can only recall 1 other save from a Bendtner header. (Speaking of the 1st leg here)

Barca would gladly take Almunia in place of Valdes. Its not Almunia’s fault there is 1000 shots flying at him because our defending and injuries have not helped us.

Grass aint always greener on the other side people. I would still be confident taking the same squad into next season. Minus Silvestre and plus another CB. His header was amazing against Wigan, he just isn’t adequate cover for a team pushing for a title.

  75. Limpar @ 11:24

I should know better then to go down that road. The blog has enough name calling and snide remarks although sometimes it does get hard to resist. Sorry. Honestly I never watched Roy Keane play. Just know him by reputation so I should have shut up about that.

  76. word: Silva is not a wide player. He is a creative midfielder, who if playing on the left, cuts inside like Nasri and Rosicky. In fact he has been playing mostly behind Villa this season so not quite a wide player like you ask for.

  77. What about Akinfeev. He is at the right age (25) to take over and a no-risk move. Get him now Arsene before United make the move. 15m shoulb be enough.

  78. If I was wenger I would try and keep the squad together as much as possible. The most important part of being a manager is managing your players and keeping them all hungry and getting the best out of them. I dont think we have seen the best of this team by a long way, with all the injuries they havn’t really had a settled time playing together.

A few years ago, Hleb, Flamini, Cesc, and Rosicky were amazing… they played almost every game and built that understanding.

If lets say, Cesc, Song, Diaby, Nasri, RvP, Arshavin get that chance.. or whoever else is playing. We can have a much better season than what has passed. The curse of the injuries will soon go!!!

  79. If we are throwing out fantasy GK names I think we should go after someone like Mark Schwartzer. He is experienced, has been brilliant for Fulham for 2 yrs. He would have no adjustment to the EPL. Gomes and Gordon both had poor first years while they adjusted and now are both look like excellent keepers. Schwartzer is old enough that in 2 – 3 years when Sczezeny is ready Schwartzer could move to #2. I do not know for sure but I suspect Fulham could be tested with a reasonable offer for Schwartzer and Hangeland and we could send them Mannone or Sczezeny and Bartley/Nordtveit on loan.

  80. LimparAssist, so I had to look up Eddie Gustafsson and after that I was just wondering if you were serious?!!

  81. One of the more pathetic articles for a long time in The Mirror:
“…Reports in Italy suggest that the Turin giants are gearing up for a full scale attack on the transfer market this summer, with Van Persie, Fernando Torres, and Edin Dzeko topping their list of targets.

However, with Juventus unlikely to be in the Champions League next season, it’s unlikely that Torres would be tempted into a move, and Dzeko would fetch a figure close to £30million.

Therefore the Old Lady see the Gunners forward as the most realistic prospect,…”

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

  82. …..In exchange for Buffon and Melo, apparently.

  83. mingus, he was a decent keeper, up until recently. And now, thanks to this Keane-like act of violence, he is only half a decent keeper.

Whatever you do, don’t click on this link if you’re feint of heart.

    http://www.nationalturk.com/en/red-bull-salzburg-goalkeeper-horrendous-leg-break-85675396

  84. mingus

Great player that he is no one would pay big money for RVP not until he has proved he can play a full season

  85. CG@2.05

Almunia will be available in the summer so Barca can have him cause we certainly dont

  86. Gooner Ted, that has to be the most fucking stupid comment you have posted in a while.

  87. The one @2.34…although I will throw in the one @2.38 too.

  88. Logan Bailly seems a very good, brave goalkeeper.

  89. RvP is a £45m + player….and is died in the wool Arsenal.

  90. Alex Ice Cream

A great example of the many things that are wrong about the club and the way supporters are treated:

    http://www.onlinegooner.com/exclusive/index.php?id=1654

  91. http://www.arshavin.eu/en/news.php?id=534 Arshavin Q & A, I love this;
    16. From hmel
Dear Andrey, I have an unusual question for you. I want to marry a football player in the future (they have great legs), I am a boxer. Do you think we’ll manage to find common language?
Arshavin: This will be a dangerous mix. I think that your son will become be a kickboxer.

  92. Alex Ice Cream

    Gooner Ted,

RvP is amazing; this season he was brilliant in the centre forward role so someone would take the risk on him.

His wages of 60-80k a week are effectively 180-240k a week however, as you are lucky to get a third of a season out of him though.

  93. Szczesny is just too difficult. And how do you pronounce it?! Couldn’t we just call him ZZ Top? Or does he have to earn the “top” part first? ZZ53?

  94. the brain – I know Silva plays support striker a lot these days but I thought he started out on the wings? He can most probably cross the ball more naturally than theo, NB and clichy and is the kind of international quality playmaker that would add something special to the team. His versatility is not exactly a hindrance although I admittedly a natural winger was my first choice.

I just don’t think we are need of anything else in midfield apart from someone like him to add some star quality. Chamakh is free so after we fill defence we may decide another signing is reasonable. An exceptional attacking midfielder would boost our chances and raise morale with a very tired team who feel they are constantly fighting against the grain.

I’m sure arsene sees DM is covered with song denilson Eastmond and coquelin in the ranks. Buying a player here really would be quite a turn against youth policy.

  95. AIC,

    What’s the matter with you?

I read that story and I don’t see what AT ALL the club has done!

    What’s going on?

  96. Petty is what you are, AIC. Small-minded.

  97. isn’t Szczesny ‘s nickname ‘tech 9′ or something?

  98. I read that article this morning, AIC. It is so obviously a lie. Classic online gooner shit. Surprised you were taken in by it.

  99. Frank, I agree AIC’s take on that story says quite a lot about him.

  100. islington haye maker.

Why is it,if you back wenger your in the akb??

  101. islington haye maker.

I just don’t get,how quick people forget what wenger has done for this club.

  102. islington haye maker,

We’re happily in the AKB here. I’m a brigadier.

  103. LOL at that article AIC.

You really sympathize with a man who shouts at our publically exposed manager and assistant that we are not good enough and then sheds crocodile tears on his little blog because some observant man told him:

“People like you make me sick. You come up here expecting to win and when you don’t you start complaining”

I think he got off lightly the drunken dickhead.

  104. islington haye maker.

Ole..What a people trying to get at by calling fans who are behind the manger….AKB??

  105. islington haye maker.,

    Who cares?

We love the term…..not an insult at all.

They’re miserable fuckers who afflict this club with their non-support.

  106. All this fuss about a GK is somewhat understandable but we have quality at this position for now and the future. My opinion of Almunia is that he is adequate. His and Fabianski’s errors tend to get blown out of proportion by the crowd of “supporters” who can’t separate their love of trophies from their support for the team come hell or high water. When the team isn’t winning trophies like these cretins think they should be every error made by every player is overblown and magnified. We have seen this with Denilson, Diaby, Eboue, etc… and naturally with the keepers. The mistakes keepers make, whether they play for Barcelona, in the Blue Square PL, or with The Arsenal, are always blown out of proportion anyway. Thus with Arsenal keepers you have hypercritical “supporters” who are already ballistic because Denilson can’t pass forward, the team has not won a trophy since the Bayeaux tapestry was sewn, and now our good-for-nothing keeper has just had a howler that is surely the next sign of the apocolypse or another ice age.

Get over it. The keepers are not the reason for the current lack of recent trophies. They are adequate and based on the evidence the next generation will be superstars. The future is bright!

  107. iker casillas made his debut for madrid at the age of 18. petr cech also made his mark at a very young age. if sczsesny really is that good, i dont see why we can’t give him a small run of games (even if we dont make him our number 1) when we have given the likes of fabianski, manone and almunia so many games to prove themselves.

  108. islington haye maker.

Yeah, but it annoys me how they try to make out, that there opinion’s are shared by most Arsenal fans.

They don’t understand what this man has done for the club…I’m a season ticket holder and yes of course i want to win…But i look at the bigger picture.

Don’t people see how much some of the players have improved this season.

  109. islington haye maker.

I would put the young pole in goal.
It would have been good if he was here now.I would have thrown him in and see how he does.

  110. They must have long seasons where you come from, AIC. During his time at Arsenal, RvP has never played in less than a third of our league games.

  111. Why on Earth would you post that AIC. If you have a complaint about that fans’ treatment go to the Police Complaints Commision.

What do you know about how fans are treated?

    What a tosser.

  112. islington haye maker.,

I think they know they’re a minority. There is a group of people who’ve been determined for years to get Wenger out. Even when we were winning.

  113. I still think that Fabianski has the potential to be a great keeper. I just don’t think that he is #2 material. A run of games could do wonders for him, help him build the necessary confidence. This way, I see that he is always over excited, because whenever he gets to play, it’s in important games, and so he struggles because he is so desperate to put a good performance in, that his decision making has to suffer.

  114. Pat Rice should’ve lamped that twat.

  115. islington haye maker.

Aic,its not the club but the bully boy police.

When we beat wolves me and brother and some gooners was really happy to win so late in the game.

We had a little sing song and this copper comes running at us and says your pathetic.

So we can on singing and he starts making wanker signs at us and making jesture’s of come on then.

He was trying to provoke trouble out of us…Just a sad bored police officer.

  116. islington haye maker.

    Ole,are they spuds in disguise?

  117. flappy Mc flapflap can go and we still have 3 quality keepers.

  118. AIC. I don’t believe that Arsenal travel anywhere by train. However, Le Grove are all over it, idiots..

  119. Any news on Sendros? Any chance of him coming back? I wouldn’t mind him as 3rd choice CB, given his age he’s bound to keep improving. Djourou and Sendros, are good backup Cbs.

  120. I agree with Ole on Henry 100% he’s perfect to tie us over and coach NB Theo Vela Sunu… then in a season or two go into coaching here were he belongs.

I said this at the start of the season and I tell you he could have made the difference even if he only played the games were Arsh had to play on his own upfront.

Also Ateeb good shout on Senderos he and Djourou as back-up to TV and Hopefully WG and sol kicking around.

    2 great shouts there fellas

  121. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

You say you hate the police!

This article seems reasonable to me, why would the guy make it up? He was hassled by police for asking a basic and reasonable question.

He is not the first supporter to be threatened with membership withdrawal for spurious reasons.

The club treats supporters badly in certain ways.

  122. Alex Ice Cream

If he made it up then I apologise for posting it but its not the first time the police have bullied supporters.

  123. If anyone needed proof that Kevin Whitcher is less than supportive of Arsene Wenger then the articles he has up on his site including the one that the spiteful brat, AIC, are great examples. The guy has been undermining the club for years.

Don’t buy the Gooner…don’t provide Online Gooner with hits…and certainly do not buy the book he wrote with the Spud fan.

This guy makes money out of the club and dises it at every opportunity.

    What an arsehole.

  124. The article is about Arsene Wenger as you well know, AIC, you spiteful little bastard. I know the police very, very well…they are cunts. He is trying to take AW down with a story about plod. Total fabrication.

  125. Alex Ice Cream

Frank you are a complete cnut and have been wrong about everything to do with the success of this team. You are permanently wrong and a bully to boot.

Now f*** off back to you deluded world where everything with Arsenal is fine and where your life has some meaning. You are pathetic, worthless scum.

  126. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

I already said that if it was made up them I apologise for posting it.

I’ll be more careful in future.

  127. The clue is in the travel arrangements. The team coach is the ultimate in luxury and is THE Arsenal team coach. Why on a Sunday night would you drive it to a train station when all you have to do is drive down the m/way for two and a bit hours to London Colney.

Where was this train going to stop…Colney Holt? Oh don’t tell me the train was going to Euston and the team coach was going to drive down to London to meet them off the train to take them to Colney.

    For fucks sake, AIC

  128. Alex Ice Cream

    Frank,

Ok, ok, you win. Not my brightest moment…..

I never thought much of the online gooner anyway but even less now.

Humble pie being eaten as we speak….

  129. Its a story about a moody copper… how the hell does that represent the club in any way???

Anyone who reads that as a lack of respect between club and supporters is clearly colouring the story with their own warped views.

Its a complete non entity. why the fuck are we even discussing it?

  130. ‘I know the police very, very well…they are cunts’

Frank – I knowmany policeman and they were extremely hard in a very dangerous and important job.

To generalise like that shows that you are the only cunt, son.

  131. “I knowmany policeman and they were extremely hard in a very dangerous and important job”

    That just doesn’t sound right.

  132. Ateeb and Els:

I understand the mentallity of not buying new players. However, Senderos??? The boss would not even let me in the squad? He can not get a game at Everton. Djourou. He may be good someday but he has to prove himself again.

We have the money to spend and we clearly need help at CB and GK. Spending money to strengthen the squad within reason is not a sign of weakness. Our team has lost any modicum of confidence in itself on the defensive end of the pitch. Buying new players does not guarantee success but it sure gives us a chance to rebuild our defense and hopefully rebuild our team confidence in our ability to defend. Our GK situation is a mess and as Yogi “can Wenger take a risk with either of his 1st choice keepers next season?” I do not think he can especially after the he and the board have told the world that our financial situation has improved enough for us to invest in the squad. What else do we use the money for? No one advocates spending ourselves into administration but wise use of transfer funds to strengthen the squad at this point is critical.

1 or 2 players can make a huge difference. Vidic and Van der Sar for United. The Spuds are actually a good defensive team this year and this corresponding to Gomes’ improvement is no coincidence.

  133. most met officers working on crowd control are cunts tbf and the story is about a met officer

I do know a met policeman who is not a cunt tho…

  134. AIC looks very gullible in this exchange….

Somehow it’s completely escaped him that an episode involving a supporter and a copper has NOTHING to do with the club?

What’s next, blaming Wenger for my parking fines?

  135. LOL Ateeb – a lot of met officers certainly had a hard on thrashing people at the G20 thing last year

  136. Bill,

Most people agree that defenders tend to get better as they grow old. Sendros might have improved on his abilities and skills. I never wanted him to go on loan, to begin with. He’s had his ups and downs. Could be a good idea to have a look at him again, then again, won’t be a bad idea to look around if you can find someone better than him. The best thing possible, would be if Gallas sticks around. That will be like a new signing. Haha.

  137. The police are a necessary evil. But not as necessary as they would like to think. If there was a policeman on crowd control at a football match in Wigan he would have been a hobby bobby from Lancashire. Hobby bobbies are particularly despicable. Besides the point though, the story is not true.

  138. sorry but serious facepalm to anyone looking to get henry and senderos back to fit our consistancy problems….

  139. I don’t think Senderos will stay, but I too never wanted him to go on loan. If Senderos had been here, I believe we would have won the league for the last two seasons.

  140. Facepalm?

  141. Pz,

I wouldn’t bet on last season, but I am sure we would have won it this season, with Sendros around. And I also feel that he wouldn’t stay.

  142. Word,

Oh dear. What the fuck is a facepalm? What happened to you during the G-20 meeting? Is that like a feminine way to hit someone?

  143. It’s a petrol-based chemical developed by the CIA to attack anti-capitalists and other radicals. It’s like napalm, except it only burns people’s faces. Nasty. It’s a favourite of the British police.

  144.

  145. PZ and Ateeb:

Your confidence in him is not shared by any of the managers he has played for recently. The boss would not even put him on the bench. May be he would have gotten better over time but how can you play someone in whom you have no confidence in such a critical spot. If a young winger makes a mistake we might miss a potential goal scoring opportunity but if a GK or CB makes a mistake we are likely to concede a goal. If he could go on loan and get a season of games and prove again that he can play and improve his confidence but he can not get a run on any team he has played with.

  146. he didn’t even make the everton side did he?

  147. haha

Bill I understand your points on maybe a new face or even two, TV is the prime example for how well that can go, but better the devil you know.

However I think the fact phil isn’t playing consistently for everton should not put us off. As if Wenger does decide to show faith then he if anybody can psychologically improve phil.

I would love to have seen the table with our swiss defenders in play this season.

  148. Heh, – Senderos..!!!!!….!!!!!!

You having another “Poetic Moment” Pz?
    :-)

  149. Anybody got any support on here?

So that’s Almunia AND Senderos both completely shit eh?

    Some damned fools round here.

I think Almunia proved against barca in both ties he can play.

  150. Els

Your sentence was missing the word ‘consistently’. That is what is required from a title winning goalkeeper.

    YW

  151. Ateeb, Els and PZ.

I am not a WG fan but keeping him would add some stability rather then almost completely rebuilding our center. If we do keep him we need 1 good CB. As Ole said yesterday someone who can head the ball and pass. I think that Fabianski could be a good GK someday but we can not afford as a team to watch him make gigantic howlers while we fight for 3rd place or hopefully 1st place next year. He could really do with a loan to an EPL team. Joe Hart has certainly benifited. Perhaps with time Fabianski can be as good as the boss advertises. Maybe Newcastle could use him next year.

btw Ateeb good one about Gallas being a new signing. LOL. I know you and PZ did not mean it this way but your comments @ 4:43 and 4:46 would imply that the boss mismanaged the squad and that caused us to loose the league. If we keep really quiet maybe the AKB police will miss that one.

  152. James I went to the link you gave me and I thinks it’s a load of bull. really?!?! Viera and Henry I our squad next season?!?! How unrealistic can u be?!?!

  153. how would keeping a player that Wenger wouldnt even put into a CC squad “add stability”… think about what your saying mate

  154. yes YW.. I agree. Almunia was absolutely unreal in the 1st leg against barca. But I cannot heap complete praise on the player because he has proven time and time again that he is inconsistent. It is so frustrating because it is not his shot stopping that is lacking, but his decision making, “control of the box” etc…

there have been so many times this season where after a ball was desperately cleared for a corner our back 4 are all looking around like confused baby birds, begging almunia for some direction. Too me thats whats most frustrating about almunia

  155. wow Bill my bad, thought you were talking about Senderos.. disregard my comment

  156. just a bite of humble pie for me.. AIC let me grab some of his, as he has been left with a whole bakery full!

    nom nom nom nom nom

  157. I think Arsene would’ve loved to have him back up rather than Sol and Sylvestre, but rather Sendros made the initiative to go out on loan. Career choice. I am pretty sure of this.

  158. i dont know abotu that Ateeb. both this season and last we have seen numerous opportunities, when senderos was with us, for him to slot in. CC ties especially. I cant imagine what it would do to one’s confidence have tweety bird picked in front of you.. I dont really slag off any of our boys, but silvestre angers me as a player

  159. Senderos’ confidence was shot after the CL game against Liverpool a couple of seasons ago. He has suffered from injury after injury since then and he wanted to go out on loan in order to play more regularly in hopes of featuring for Switzerland in the WC. Had he stayed with us, he would not have helped us anyway as he has spent most of his loan with Everton injured. I think his unwillingness to be back up caused Arsene to sign Sol as a stop gap. We probably have to acknowledge that Senderos has had all the opportunities he is going to get at Arsenal. He will probably be a good defender when he sorts out his injury problems and as he matures and learns to take mistakes in his stride and toughens up mentally. Maybe he is not cut out for a defensive role in a top team, but in a different (slower) league or with a mid-table team with a more defensive shape, he might do well. I wish him all the best (except when he plays against Arsenal!). He seems like a nice lad.

  160. Senderos is a grown up, and can make his own decisions, like Upson before him.

I have a feeling, pure speculation, that he didn’t want to play in front of AFC fans again.

    -

    Bill,

I think you’ll like this post:

    http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/2010/04/how-missing-your-central-back-pairing-handicaps-the-attack/

    Enjoy.

  161. Finsbury:

Interesting article. Thanks. TV is going to be a great player in this league for a long time. He is a good defender who I hope will get even better at defending.

Obviously he also aids the attack. That is one of the things AW said about him when he bought him. I have always thought that he could be the more offensive minding CB and he would be at his best paired with a strong stay at home type CB so he could be free to be more of a sweeper CB. If WG does stay I still hope we get another CB more like Sol but a little better passer. I did not realize that passing was a weakness of Sol. thanks again.

  162. There’s a famous quote, or an alleged quote, that I was told about by another exile from Flanders:

That Ronald Koeman told all his players to press every AFC player except Sol when his (?)PSV side beat what was essentially the Invincible squad in the CL.

Didn’t work for him this season against TV5 & Gallas. So, the two do have their advantages…but there is no point speculating now, 3 games still to go!

  163. Who is everyone going to support in the Manc/Spud game. Tough one. Hate em both. I think I will support the Mancs since we really need to keep 3rd place and I do not see the Mancs dropping enough points to let us take 2nd. If we can secure 3rd place this weekend it would be nice to see some of the younger guys get on the pitch like Barazite.

  164. Finsbury:

I guess Koeman did not think sol could beat him with a pass. Sol does like to hoof the long ball. Keep an eye on it this weekend when we play Citeh.

  165. Frank, I respect a lot of your opinions but you are talking out of your rear when you refer to the police as cunts. Maybe if some of the members of public in England were not so anti social and binge drinkers the police could go about their everyday lives doing the things that are important to the police and the more intelligent members of the public. If the police are cunts then it’s because the general public are cunts…..

  166. Islington Haye Maker made my day, simple sincere and profound words, so thanks.

    AIC didn’t.

Hello everyone. I’ve been travelling and looking after baby and well … stuff.

    Hows our team?

    I love THE Arsenal!

  167. I do know some decent policemen.

  168. Not all Babylon are bad!

  169. I do not want to stereo type the English people but certain members of the public make the already thankless task of being a policeman even more difficult than it should be. I guess you have to be a cop to understand some of the needless abuse that the general public can hand out.

  170. There’s good and bad on both sides Frogman. We all form our opinions based on our own personal experience.

  171. “I have a feeling, pure speculation, that [Senderos] didn’t want to play in front of AFC fans again.”

I think the truth is something like that. Senderos was slaughtered by Arsenal fans for making as many mistakes in five years as Silvestre makes in every game. Nobody can doubt that we would have been much better off with Senderos in defense instead of Silvestre.

  172. I agree Senderos is a better player that Silvest. He is actually a very good player. No one can deny that he has put in some brilliant defensive displays but like a Goalie, defenders mistakes are amplified.

  173. You are very wise, Passenal, I have nothing against police frogmen, never met a bad one yet.

  174. You do have some serious babylon though. when I was shot, the police told my friend to tell them where the guys were and they would take care of them!!!. Scary thought.

  175. I used to go to some seriously violent water polo matches as a young man. Occasionally biosterous fans would invade the pool. Crowd control was left to police frogmen. Did a good job. Of course the sport has been cleaned up now, players even get booked for putting their shirts on after they have scored.

  176. “Of course the sport has been cleaned up now, players even get booked for putting their shirts on after they have scored.”

    ha ha!

  177. I have to say though, Frogman, you have to be a member of the general public to know the needless abise that the police can hand out.

  178. abise is much worse than abuse

  179. Exactly Frank. The not so good side of the police abuse of power is exemplified by the John Charles Menezes and Blair Peach examples in the UK.

  180. power corrupts or is it that when one gets a little it reveals the truth thats in their hearts?

  181. To demonstrate the true nature of the bond between general public and police, Arsenal supporters might engage the policemen on duty on Saturday on just these issues. Debate the balance between liberal freedoms and the need to control citizens. Perhaps discuss the police role as protector of the citizen rather than protector of the state as Robert Peel originally intended. I am sure the policemen will be very forthcoming in their responses.

  182. Since when was the police EVER the protector of the citizens, in it’s truest sense? Always have been a protector of the state. It’s the violent arm of the state, without which the state cannot function. Allowing it to have control over the means of coercion. So the question remains if they are cunts or not? Well, raise a reasonable voice against the state and I am sure anyone can find out.

  183. I am yet to witness any Policemen join a peaceful protest against any injustices that the state inflicts upon it’s citizens. On the other hand I have witnessed them standing behind the barricades with their weapons, always equipped fully to tear down on the people given the green light. They’re always on the other side, aren’t they?

  184. Maybe they are useful when it comes to bringing law and order to the streets? Crime still surges high, the ones caught are mostly the low level criminals, never the bigger fish. Yet billions of dollars, changes hand in various criminal activities, from drug trade to weapons trade. Surely the state in the 21st century is capable of keeping a track of it, its difficult to believe that these illegal trades can operate without the help or nod from the state. The state could possibly bring an end to it, if it desires, or make it almost negligible. It’s difficult to comprehend the police force more than just another tool for the state.

  185. i had the misfortune of clicking though James’ link on Bleacher.

“But adding Vieira, a player who can happily sit on the bench since this will be his last World Cup, and playing him once in 2-3 weeks doesn’t sound a bad proposition to me.”

What a bunch of absolute bollocks. Doesn’t make sense financially or on the pitch in anyway. I’m fucking unsubscribing to the Bleacher report because of shite articles like that.

  186. Was it last year or the year before when the police staged a protest march and lobby of Parliament over their pay? Some of my left wing friends waved fivers at them – just to remind them of their previous behaviour during the 1984 miners’ strike.
F**kers never returned my watch they stole during the 1970 Stop the Springboks Tour.

  187. I agree wth Ateeb and I know exactly what he’s talking about. Never-the-less, rare as they may be I would point out there are ocassions when security services, including the police, have acted decisively on the side of a great moral cause. One such was the 1974 revolution in Portugal when army and police refused to fire upon protestors, who in turn placed carnations in the barrels of the rifles. Change of a vicious facist government followed swiftly, and with it, independence in the Portuguese African colonies – by and large the worst examples of colonial plunder in Africa, with the exception of King Leopold’s Belgian bloody adventures in Congo.

So, in Africa we are grateful and respectful of the actions of the Portuguese policemen and soldiers.

What our Frogman is talking about however is something else. Somebody has to clean the rubbish, fix the sewers, dig the roads and handle the bodies of murdered people, inform a parent their child’s body has been found, deal with a drug addict. I have done the first three jobs, but not the latter three, which are for the police.

My experience of police is something like that of soldiers, another job I’ve done in the freedom struggle, they’re pretty much run-of-the-mill types, all types, different types – good and bad, up, down and sideways too. They’re people.

In the wrong hands, with a corrupt anti-people state, police are capable of appalling abuses, yet individually capable of acts of moral courage. The account of Nelson Mandela’s white prison officer for 2 decades on Robben Island (he calls Mandela his father) helps to understand.

I take Frogman as a decent policeman and I accept there are others like him.

  188. Of course to complete my story, and give it balance, it needs to be said that it was the appalling casualties suffered by Portuguese conscripts in Africa from guerilla actions that sparked the revolution in their homeland.

The secret police PIDE in colonial Mozambique were the most cruel I have ever come across, I cannot describe the tortures they inflicted, and so our comrades there were not inclined to generosity in their conduct of that war. It must have been horrible for young Portuguese lads who had never been in a war or in Africa to face generations of wrath of brutally oppressed.

  189. Thank you Frank. Also some good level headed discussion on the police issue from both sides of the fence. Of course there is a certain catagory of police that fall into the negative percentage, just like in all walks of life there are good and bad. I just took objection to all police being catagorized as cunts that was all.
Have a great day everyone and lets get back to what we do best and support the mighty Arsenal.

  190. Leave off the 5.0.

Shotta – We will crush City tomorrow and bring justice back to the motherland

  191. OK. I concede that not all policepersons are cunts. Just quite a high proportion of them are.

  192. My, there has been a lot of ground covered here in the last few hours.

What a broad church ACLF is. What a lot of experience and knowledge in our posters.

    All united by one thing.

    Well, nearly all.

  193. Man Citys balls must be taken from them and used as marbles at the emirates on saturday, then crushed and thrown away like sand in the wind

  194. Almunia shouldn’t be anywhere near the club next season. Fans have short memories. Almunia cost us the title. In fact he lost the title for us at Birmingham and White Hart Lane.

Sell Almunia and you can’t get a good buyer for him. He’s in the same group as Senderos who can’t play regularly at Everton yet got tons of chances here.

If only Arsene had listened to Jens who advised him of the dangers of making Almunia number 1. Almunia is not fit to be here.
