Stone Cold Friday: The Nervy Road To Arsenal’s Vindication

RIP Alex Chilton. Here’s another Big Star, Darius

What do West Ham United, Sol Campbell and ‘A Cultured Left Foot’ have in common?

You may not know this, but the first blog post on ACLF was written on the day after Sol Campbell walked off the pitch at half time, straight past the home dressing room, and into the solitary confinement of Gary Lewin’s medical room.

Perhaps Lewin didn’t understand why an uninjured Campbell opted for his office instead of the half time team talk down the corridor during a match that was still very salvageable. Clearly, Sol was convinced that his issue would be better dealt with by Lewin than by Wenger.

Campbell’s subsequent actions baffled the footballing world as the Arsenal colossus then walked straight out of Highbury and into the central reservation. It forced Wenger to turn to 20 year old Seb Larson to complete the game at centre half.

I suspect the events of that day may have influenced YW to start this blog, and if it did, then there’s clearly a silver lining to every cloud. (YW – Ain’t that the truth, Brother! Just re-read the first post, as close a teetering towards the ‘Dark Side’ as ever there has been)

Apart from being the last team to beat Arsenal at Highbury, West Ham were also the first team to win a match at the Emirates stadium. They also seem to have the knack of scoring against Arsenal in recent times.

The visit of the Hammers tomorrow evening easily qualifies as a nervous affair for many supporters. My sense is that it’s not necessarily because Arsenal have an intrinsic fear of our unpredictable cousins from the east end of London – it’s more to do with the fact that there’s another 3 out of the remaining 24 points up for grabs, and there’s no margin for error.

I think that if there’s one perception the ’Invincibles’ left on our psyche, it’s perhaps the expectation that winning the league title can be a straight forward affair.

It’s not strictly true however, for even with the ’Invincibles’, there were some nervy squeaky bum times, not least the 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane that secured the title that season.

Much has been made about Arsenal’s supposed easier run-in compared to our title challengers. My sense is that suggesting that we have easier games is perhaps the first symptom of vanity, a slippery slope that we’re best kept away from.

The truth is that regardless of who we play, the fewer the games between us and that finishing line, the more nervous and fragile we get. Arsenal’s impudence in refusing to go away and literally defying the odds as title challengers has shortened the distance between aspiration and reality.

I’ve said before that the biggest strength and weapon that this Arsenal team have had this season is the fact that people haven’t seen the team coming. Let’s face it, the players have even blindsided critics within Arsenal ranks who gave this team no hope whatsoever at the beginning of the season.

What has intrigued me the most over the last few weeks is the slow but sure vindication of Arsenal’s strategy to grow organically by focussing on developing a core of young players.

Call me a sadist, but the recent exits out of the Champions league by Real Madrid and Chelsea were cause for celebration in the footballing world. Those defeats were the triumphs of good over evil (the evil of financial doping) within a game that required an industrial dose of reality check.

Somewhere along the line, the game lost the plot and arrogance and vanity took over. Sustainability and long term stability got laughed out of football administration as clubs up and down the land chased the Queen’s shilling.

For some sanity to be injected back into football, it’s extremely important that Arsenal continue to rack up every available point until the end of the season. It’s not an easy job, but someone has to do it.

I noticed that after the Hull game this past weekend, there’s been a lot of talk about Arsenal finally maturing as if maturity is an event that can be measured by the flick of a light switch. Far from that, Arsenal has proven that this season, they are a team with formidable mental strength and the character to last the distance.

Our nervousness around the remaining games have more to do with the prize at stake. And it’s not just the trophy at the end of the road – it has more to do with the realisation of Arsenal’s vision.

Victory for Arsenal come the end of the season will do more for the future of football in this country and in Europe than anything Geldof or Bono ever did for Africa (note my cynicism and contempt at the thought of the fate of a continent being dependent on two aging rock stars).

With every game, the belief within the team grows, and the character and determination strengthens. The confidence of the team is the counter-balance to the frying nerves many an Arsenal fan is left with on match day.

We’re light years away from the events on 1st Feb 2006, and Sol Campbell returns to the centre of Arsenal’s defence tomorrow evening to exorcise the demons of that night.

Apart from Arsenal providing the source of redemption for Sol, the team have the opportunity to make Chelsea and Manchester United nervous when they play on Sunday. It’s also an opportunity to move closer to the realisation of an audacious vision that will go a long way in vindicating Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.

West Ham are a dangerous proposition for the simple reason that they’re fighting the demons of relegation. This is a club that was willing to ’lend’ Portsmouth £10 million to guarantee that they don’t lose 4 points.

We shouldn’t forget that on the flip side, Arsenal is also seen as a dangerous proposition for the simple reason that there’s a title to be collected at the other end of the terrain.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Sol. Rio Coker is also gone from West Ham’s ranks.

  2. Interesting interview with Traore on the official site. I must have missed the PSG rumours.

  3. Great post Darius. Yes West Ham sent Sol into meltdown but I suspect it had more to do with the breakdown of his rather public relationship with a well known hieress and his performance transmitted onto the pitch like JT. I do have a biblical epiphany about this one though that Sol the lone ranger walks out of the mists and delivers the young guns to the promised land! Redemption comes in the shape of a big cup with big ears and the cup with the big tassles! We have an opportunity to make history and all the doubters will be proved wrong. Is it me or is a quarter finally with Manure looming, followed by Inter in the Semis and then Barca?Bring it on the another Double.

  4. Great article Darius. If we get a fair ref (one who will do his job as he is supposed to) we will be fine. Us losing a 2 goal lead last time we played WHU still resonates loud and clear and our boys have something to prove, what better time than tomorrow and be top of the league and hopefully there to stay.

  5. What nervousness? I don’t detect any of that. Nor complacency. Nor even believing the “easier run-in” spin. I really think they’re enjoying it all. Sol’s return has, if anything, brought back into sharp focus, the fact that this sport is here to be enjoyed. Savoured even. Sol has relished the chance to be involved in the game at the highest level, and this ingredient has seeped into the rest of the squad. Add Cesc’s steely focus and we have the right combination. I don’t see nervousness though! Come On You REDs!!!!

  6. Is chamakh is coming 2 arsenal

  7. I’m angered by his words and attitude. Considering his leg was not broken, it is easy for him to get back to normal after shedding some tears. For Aaron, it is going to take 6 months or so to get back to normal.

Shawcross is confident the tackle will not have any long-lasting effect on him or the way he plays.

“I was quite surprised how quickly I was back to normal,” he added. “I knew straight after I was going to be the same player and make tackles. It was an accident and these things happen in football – I’m not going to change the way I play.”

  8. Good God Darius! I knew all that already but was trying hard not to put it into conscious thought!

Now I have to face the next few weeks the hard way – hiding behind the sofa for every match -instead of acting as if running on happy pills in blythe unconcern asto the result.

  9. Oh yes. I know that feeling consolsbob….the showing unconcern as to the result. If the team really are getting nervous, then I’m really looking forward to some enjoyably skittish performances like we’re playing on ice with the handbrake off.

  10. What are people smoking thinking Rooney is better than Messi.

  11. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Darius! Loved it. Sorry for all the complaining in recent week but this post really speaks to the task at hand: winning our next string of football matches.

  12. When is the draw?

  13. 11.00 I think. You nervous?

  14. Darius

If you have a moment can you explain the loan to Portsmouth? I wasn’t aware of this but would like to know more. Thanks

  15. Another great one Darius.

So true about the vanity and arrogance. It’ll be great to laugh the high spending madness out of the game when we show the world the true meaning of running a club with honesty, ethics, sustainability and pure class.

Luke – At the time i wasn’t entirely angry with Shawcross, more with the ‘kick the fuck out of those young foreigners’ culture. But after all his comments about this, he’s trying to make himself look like the victim which is just wrong. But to be fair, i’ve only seen snippets of his interviews…

I’m confident of us putting on a master class this weekend. A clear victory by 3 or 4 goals me thinks. Come on boys!!!

  16. I think Sol will do a better job of dealing with Lennox Cole than Gallas did last time round. He’s more of a ‘no nonsense’ defender and will out muscle the big oaf. I can’t believe how good we made him look last time we played them.

  17. I don’t think we have an easier run in, necessarily, but I’d say we were lucky to have gotten through Bolton and Blackburn earlier on in the season.

  18. This is a decisive few weeks coming up. If Chelski drop points against Blackburn and Villa and MU drop points against Liverpool and Bolton, I think we’ll be clear at the top before these two meet up in April.

  19. Stong cold friday, i always look forward to darius posts…..
That aside, tomorrow we have a chance to be top. I hope we take it

  20. The odds of us getting Barcelona in today’s draws is the same as the odds of getting any other team. It’s 7 to 1.

Incidentally, those are the same odds that Arsenal win the competition.

  21. As much as I’d love a clear thrashing of Wham, without conceding, I see a closer encounter. I’d say 3-2. One of the main reasons is that Zola is fighting for his job (imho) and if they don’t put up a show, we could be responsible for getting a second manager sacked in as many weeks.

  22. @London.

David Gold, the new co-Chairman of West Ham, offered to loan Portsmouth £10m when it turned out that they might go bust. If Portsmouth went bust, then it would mean that all the teams that played them would lose the points they earned against Portsmouth as all results Pompey were involved in would be expunged.

West Ham at that point had won one game and drawn the return against Pempey and David Gold wanted to make sure that Portsmouth don’t go bust because it will mean that West Ham stand a higher chance of relegation, losing more than the £10m he was willing to offer Pompey to prop them up to the end of the season.

David Gold actually confirmed his selfish motives in a BBC radio 5 live show about football finance on March 2nd.

  23. i used to wonder what all these pundits smoke or drink when they say arsenal dont have depth….just look at the players available for 2morow.

im sure even pat rice would find it hard to guess who wenger would pick 2morow.

    looking forward to the draw.
dont want man utd(not afraid , just want a forgien team)
dont want barca(saving them for the greatest final ever)
dont want CSKA(russia is to far)
bring any 1 else, even inter milian, i think we owe mourinho something
but im prayin for bordeux(want to see chamak) or bayern(i think we would give them a whooping)

  24. YW. I have just read your first post from 2006. I was at that West Ham game and the guy I went with left after they scored their third goal. He missed an exciting final ten minutes when all of the aging stars left on the pitch pulled themselves together, Arsenal attacked and deserved at least to draw the game.

Unfortunately support has become so polarised nowadays that what was fair comment in 2006 would now be classified as doomerism. The doomers have become so rife that they have forced me into claiming Arsene Knows Best even when I want to criricise. We seem to have tribalism within the tribe. (As a lawyer I suppose that makes me a Sioux)

Let’s hope that all Arsenal supporters get behind the team on Saturday so that we can go top of the league again.

  25. C1gooner – I wouldn’t be happy if we were to seal Zola’s fate. However, i do think they’re gonna get spanked. Ze lads will want to show how far they’ve come since the last game, and with Song & Cesc back in the middle, i can’t see them resisting for too long. We have to be going into these games with the same mentality as those who are close to relegation. Must win. Every game.

We’ll all be very disappointed if the lads start to become complacent at such an important stage of their careers, let alone this season.

  26. *their season*

  27. i think we still have to go to blackburn..

  28. Firstlady – Until Messi can score 10+ goals with his head, he’ll never be as good as Rooney ;-)

I was joking by the way. Messi has been amazing in the last week or so, 2 hat tricks wasnt it?

They have been basing these superlatives on this season for Rooney, whereas Messi’s been consistantly unstoppable for the last 3-4 years. I do think they are the 2 best players in the world at the moment though…

  29. Agreed Arse Shavin. I get what you are saying. I too am all for us to spank W.Ham, but they won’t make it easy for us.

Wouldn’t it be great if me made the goal diff at home this weekend? That would be something.

  30. We do no7, we also have Birmingham away which’ll be tough, Spuds and Money City. Not exactly what i’d call easy. i’d be happy if we still had to play the Chavs and Manure before the season closes.

c1gooner – you may be right, that’s the beauty of this game, we’ll have to see how it pans out on the day… That would be pretty sexual. If we can beat Porto 5-0 without our captain, i think it’s do-able ;-)

  31. liverpool will be the kingmakers.

i was hoping they would get knocked out yesterday. you know how dangerous a wounded tiger can be.

but i realise either way, they are going to whack man u.

  32. I hope you’re right no7! Are they at Old Trafford?

  33. lol..well said Arse Shavin.

@ no7. I think so (about Liverpool) too. I was kinda rooting for them to beat Lille, so they get into this round of league games with a positive mind set. Fakin Riera isn’t helping though.

  34. I have a feeling it willl be CSKA or Inter

  35. it’s at old trafford, but they won there 4-1 last season…

anyway i expect them to at least hold man utd to a draw.

having said that, it would mean nothing if we don’t beat west ham.

arsene said before the chelsea-man u game earlier this season:

you always can enjoy the game after u won urs.

so i hope we do that this weekend.

oh and i wun be too sad if mascherano breaks rooney’s legs.

  36. “What are people smoking thinking Rooney is better than Messi.”

They only think that in Manchester. Rooney is a good player, no doubt, but Messi is just that much better than everyone else at the moment.

  37. I’d rather have a tougher route to the final, just like in 06.

  38. I think we still have to go to blackburn..

You’re right no7. They’re our next to last fixture.

  39. i can’t believe fulham could beat juve but surrender so meekly to man utd.

  40. We face Spurs right after our second QF leg.

  41. I know, i couldn’t believe what i was hearing as i was waking up to the news this morning… Sounds like a great match. (i must admit i have a bit of a soft spot for Fulham – have no idea why!!)

  42. fulham are a decent team… savoury characters i thought. nothing like some other teams we know.

west ham is a team i like as well. you know, teams that try to play football. unfortunately, we cant do them any favours.

  43. gainsbourg,

not if spurs go tru in the fa cup. then the match would be pushed back.

  44. From Ryan Shawcross:

“When Sir Alex Ferguson called me, I could hear them celebrating their Carling Cup triumph in the background at Wembley, so he had obviously gone out of his way to contact me, which just goes to show what kind of a man he is.

“He told me to keep my head up and that I was an honest lad who didn’t mean it. He congratulated me on my England call-up, saying that I had to focus on how far I had come in the game and how well I had done as well.”

    I say:

This is perverse. Ferguson calls Shawcross, to tell him he’s a ‘honest lad’ and he didn’t mean it. This is perverse beyond words….Ferguson calls his ex-player, to sympathise with him for the horror of breaking another player’s leg, a player he thought he had signed, but who signed for Arsenal. Then he coaches him on what his line should be. That’s essentially what it is. Ferguson doesn’t call to ask what happened, he tells Shawcross that Shawcross is a honest lad, and he knows better than Shawcross that Shawcross didn’t mean it. Perverse. The key line in the phrase above is this one; “When Sir Alex Ferguson called me, I could hear them celebrating their Carling Cup triumph in the background at Wembley, so he had obviously gone out of his way to contact me”. He’s gone out of his way. Ferguson is a right old red nosey cunt.

  45. Hodgson has don well with Fulham. Let’s hope they loose all their confidence by the time we face them.

  46. Just goes to show how shit serie a is at the moment.

  47. won’t someone just break rooney’s leg?

i want to tell fergie that he is an honest lad too..

  48. no7

Fulham are great at home but rubbish away.

They beat Man USA at Craven Cottage. In fact we were VERY lucky to come away with a win from there

  49. Ole, the Eduardo break came from one of Ferguson’s chum as well. I’m not want to buy into conspiracy theories but this is too much of a coincidence. I mean why call the fucker when you’re supposed to be celebrating with your team?

  50. Shawcross is a cunt and anyone who supports him is is cunt!! We all know that.

  51. I thought Fulham payed way too much respect to MU at old shitford. Once they conceded it was all down hill. It’s as if the occasion got to them.

  52. The reason why English players won’t break Rooney’s leg is because if they ever want to play for England they know not to mess with him.

  53. Cheers for that Ole. That is perverse. I bet he wouldn’t have called him if Ramsey wasn’t one of the few who resisted his red-nosed alcoholic charm.

I didn’t realise SAF was the Malcolm Tucker off In The Thick of It. It all makes sense now…

  54. It it d time

  55. Can you guys post the results as they happen? They’re not showing it here in the states. They’re showing some god damned fitness infomercial featuring Chuck Norris.

    Thanks.

  56. Paul Wilson in the Telegraph lazily regurgitating the tired old cliche that Arsenal have a “soft underbelly”. Yawn.

I read that Shawcross thing regarding Ol’ Blue nose’s support. What a despicable old scrote he really is.

  57. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8571241.stm

Not sure if it’ll work Gainsbourg69 but here’s a link

  58. lyon-bordeaux

  59. Thanks guys.

  60. bayern-man utd

  61. BARCA!!

  62. we drawn barca.

  63. Lyon v Bordeaux
    Bayern Munich v ManU
    Arsenal v Barcelona

  64. Inter Milan v CSKA Moscow

  65. Very good, Darius.

    And well done Fulham.

Hoping for Bayern. I’m sure the ARS and MUN balls are being warmed up as we speak though.

  66. Welcom Mr Henry!!

  67. barcelona noooooooooooo

  68. Barcefuckinglona….

  69. Inter v CSKA

  70. If we win we meet Inter or CSKA Moscow

  71. Barca?! BARCA?!! Oh god.

Thierry will be breaking things right now.

  72. Bring it on then!! Beating them in the final would have been much sweeter…

  73. Barcelona. I fucking love it.

  74. What was i saying about Messi earlier? I’ve changed my mind – he’s shite.

  75. wierd to think that he was watching us tonk blackburn as a fan a couple of months back………….and next month he’ll be trying to end our champions league.

  76. ‘Trying’ being the operative word.

  77. We’ll be the underdogs and that suits us.

  78. Word FunGunner.

  79. AndyE its good for you to hold on to that feeling cos it means we will be getting into the semis then… Nice

  80. no one will give us a prayer!

    This is so exciting.

Were going to the nou camp!

  81. Raadi Al Haroumi

So we’re gonna have to do it the hard way.. beating Barca, Inter and then Utd in the final.. the ultimate triangle of revenge.. Barca for 2006, Inter for Wenger to finally put one over Maureen, and Utd to lay the ghost to rest.
    I believe.
    We’re on our way.

  82. Arsenal will win the home tie I reckon

  83. Good we got Barca. Now Cesc can really show Barca (and their president) where he belongs and arse it up them!!

  84. I think we’re probably the worst team they could’ve drawn. We know how to hold on to the ball and we’ve got our own threats they’ll have to deal with. I’m looking at you Mr. Arshavin.

  85. I like the way you think Raadi Al Haroumi

  86. That’s if United gets past Bayern Munich.

  87. my heart sank when bordeaux came out.

two teams gone just like that.

  88. Raadi Al Haroumi

Eboue to score at the Nou Camp and take us through!!!

  89. This is properly exciting!!
    We can do this.

  90. Anyone going to the match then? ;-)

  91. Forget about winning/losing or whatever. THINK HOW GOOD THE FOOTBALL IS GOING TO BE IN THOSE TWO GAMES. The two best passing sides in Europe, it’s going to be sublime!

  92. and one of them wont make it to the final thats just aint it vince no footbaling team in the final

  93. I kid you not, Barca are dreading the thought of drawing Arsenal.

    This wasn’t in their script….LOL!

  94. i meant thats just sad they wont both make it to the finals

  95. Raadi Al Haroumi

c1.. this season has a strange air about it. The team are now together.. its time.

Gains.. Bayern will pose a serious threat to Utd but If they get through, Lyon or Bordeaux won’t stand a chance against them over 2 legs in my opinion.

Looking forward to welcoming Thierry back aswell.

  96. 1 loose cannon

I’m happy with the draw the time has finally come I’ve been waiting for this game for a long time. To be the best you have to beat the best. its the toughest draw we got considering the second leg is away but we have shown we can score away from home so it might work in our advantage with away goals rule. Can’t wait

  97. the only downside to this draw is that for the next few days, we’ll have idiots all over the radio shows dooming and glooming about Arsenal facing Barca.

It’s the best draw that could have happened for football.

  98. King Titi is gonna score against us at Emirates. I predicted this when he left us. This is going to be an epic epic game. We can beat them but I think Sagna ande Clichy will need to focus more on defence to stop Barca’s counters cause that’s where the danger lies.

If Gallas is out, Ibrahimovic won’t start. They’ll go for a pacey attack to trouble Campbell. We can do this because we have Wenger and we are the Arsenal.

The Return of King is on!!

  99. us vs munich for the final

us versus inter for the semis

  100. fu ck!!this doesnt fill me with much confidence!!!!!

  101. i bet perez is calling wenger…to do him a big favour by sparing him the misery of seeing barca at the bernabeu in may!

  102. woop.

    When is robin back?

  103. its gonna be this route to the final most probably:

    barca > inter > man u

if we lift the trophey then it will be the peak of arsene’s career.

(of course the double would be even sweeter!)

    COYG

  104. This is going to be an exciting draw. Vermaelen and Clichy must be licking their chops at the prospect of going up against Messi.

  105. it won’t be easy… but people won’t say we deserve it if we beat lyon, moscow and bordeaux on the way to the trophy.

so just as well we got barca.

  106. This is actually a perfect draw for Arsenal. The expectations have just sunk to rock bottom, and all the pressure will be on Barca. If Arsenal lose, then it will be seen as an unlucky draw, but if we win then the momentum and confidence might carry us through.

Still, we would be looking at a probable run of Barcelona, Inter Milan and Man U……

This feels like Inter and Real Madrid all over again, although against a much better side.

I’ll take a 1-0 at home and a 1-1 at the Nou Camp.

Added to that, the return of Thierry. What an occasion this will be.

  107. If Bordeaux beat Lyon then Chamakh has a great chance to make himself a hero in our eyes against Utd in the semi! Although saying that to face them and win in the final would be incredible, with RVP coming off the bench to score with his first touch since returning. That would be how i’d write the script.

  108. 1 loose cannon

Darius. Messi said he would like to avoid M.utd and Arsenal that means he knows what to expect from us. We will be really up for this game the reason I’m feeling confident is because I have been watching Barca and they love to keep possession but they will meet a team who are as good as them in keeping possession so it will be very interesting to see how they will deal with that. At the back they are very venerable Stuggart find huge amount of space but did not have the quality to do anything if they give us that space we will no doubt put few passed them. We just need Sol and Vermaelen at their best on the night. I’m upbeat about it

  109. here here 1LC

    I realy fancy this.

We are, after all, the arsenal.

I really hope robins at least on the bench for one of these.

  110. Emperor Gooner

if there’s one team that can beat barca by taking the game to them , then its arsenal

i wont hide the fact that i’m gutted we didnt get an easier draw but at the same time my b*****ks are filled with a tingling sensation …this will be the best game ever!!

  111. Wow, what a draw. I would’ve preferred Barca in the final, for obvious reasons, but playing against them is always a special event, no matter if now or in the later stages. Are we going to play away first?

  112. I’m not gutted that we got the toughest possible draw. In order to be considered the best one has to beat the best. I bet our boys are through the roof knowing they’ll have to play Barca.

  113. Firstlady – we’d have to beat them at some point on our route to success, at least we can get them out of the way now. And these matches are going to be something special. We’re on better form than we were in the 2006 final, and other then Messi, they haven’t been firing on all cylinders… I’m confident of an upset here.

If Barcelona show us a lack of respect in the same way they have done with the Cesc saga, they’ll have to eat a big wedge of humble pie come the end of the 2nd leg.

  114. home first evilfiek

  115. The really good news about this drae is that a manu- Barca Final is still on.

Well, that’s what the Sky bookie said anyway.

  116. we need a big performance from our strikers to beat barca and that will take a lot of confidence. As long as we keep our heads then we can certainly take the game to them and see how they react. The mangers tactics will play a massive role as well. We are the best team equiped to deal with the probable finalists so why not take them on now?

  117. 1LC.

I don’t buy that other teams are not scared of Arsenal. Barca are worried. There’s a lot of talk about Arsenal being scared of other teams.

Believe me – Barca are worried about a team that actually plays football.

There’s a lot of bull being said about this draw being a nightmare for Arsenal.

I tell you there’s nothing as sweet as winning this thing the hard way.

In 2006, we played Real Madrid, Juventas, Villareal and Barca in the knock-out stages. Noboby gave us a chance in those games.

This team is going to be better prepared than the 2006 team.

The bookies and pundits are like the credit rating agencies that continued to give Triple A ratings to banks that sunk our economy. They know nothing and have no credibility.

No one saw this team coming and they won’t see this team ghost their way to the away dressing room at the Bernabeu on 22nd May..

And what a game for Van Persie to come back to at the Bernabeu.

  118. 1 loose cannon

its an early final. The media has never taking this team we have seriously we know with all emerging sides they have to do something spectacular to finally people admit they were wrong and this 2 games will be the perfect platform for this young team to finally anounce their arrival on the biggest world stage. you can imagine this tie in no doubt will smash the TV ratings around the World. If we beat them our reputation will grow and grow.

  119. consolbob – show’s where the main interest is, that’ll play into our hands, we’re already being dismissed.

Dismiss away fools, it’s your funeral.

  120. Every Arsenal fan should be looking forward to this game, it will be one of the most anticipated and hopefully best games of football anywhere in years.

It may not have been what we would have picked before (god where manure lucky again) but this is as glamarous a game as a fan could wait for.

If you cant see the brilliance of a draw like this then you are really missing out.

I fancy us to win at home and that to see us through overall. Up the Gunners.

  121. Darius – spot on

  122. I hope the people who’ll be able to attend the home game know what their job is. People leaving early on that day should be shot without warning. Our team is going to need us on that day more than ever.

  123. bring on barcelona!
its going to be THE match of this champions league.
I bet gallas is gonna be salivating at the prospect of defending against Messi and co. and hopefully that’ll encourage him to get fit ASAP!

  124. What a wonderful draw.

I have watched the last two Barcelona matches and have been drooling at their football. Almost as much as I drool at our very own brand of fantastic football.

Barcelona will not face a side who can keep the ball as well as they can and I would like to see how the cope with the movement of our attacking three.

The good news is that there is no chance of our team being complacent, you can expect 100% from everyone as we are the underdog.

All I hope is that we match Barca off the ball. They work extremely hard to win the ball back and we will need to do the same.

I just got a text from a Gooner mate of mine.

“It’s Man U in the final that I am worried about!”

  125. EvilFiek – if anyone leaves that game early, they dont deserve to be in the stadium in the first place.

  126. 1 loose cannon

Manure did beat Barca on the way to lifting the trophy so we can’t moan that we are unlucky with the draw. To win it you have to beat the best its as simple as that.

  127. Arsenal v Barcelona

I think that they’re going to want to buy our entire squad after this one.

  128. Glad to see such swaggering bravado over here. I for one am just an eency weency bit scared of Barcelona.

Thankfully though, I know our players won’t be.

    What a massive tie!

  129. cant wait
    arsenal – barca
    best match eva

  130. Man U aren’t lucky at all. Bayern Munich isn’t a bad team. Plus they have good players all around the pitch. I think this has been one of the most balanced draws I’ve seen in a long, long time.

  131. i think Barca is destiny. Cesc will dominate. Pep and the Barca brass will salivate over him.. and then he’ll stay in London!!!!!

  132. “won’t be easy… but people won’t say we deserve it if we beat lyon, moscow and bordeaux on the way to the trophy”

I am sure IF we dont make it and a team that will have faced the teams about nick it, they wont really remember how they got there.

How come barca have to play an english team evry year? 2008-taken out by manu, 2009 chelsea/mancs. Going by past results we are due some luck and will beat them, having calmed down I can see that now.

  133. Limpar,

I too am scared of Barca, but I am sure many Barca fans will be scared of Arsenal.

I just pray to the heavens above that we have a fully fit squad (minus Robin *weeps*) to choose from.

Does anyone know if Gallas will be back by then? I suppose nobody really knows the answer to that one.

  134. regradless of the outcome….if we cant enjoy this….we shouldnt watch football.

  135. Indeed Deano, Indeed.

  136. This is the worst draw Barc could have hoped for, am not sure they will relish facing us. If there is one team in Europe that can beat this Barca Team, its The Arsenal!!!! Possession football which Barca love to play, will be evenly matched. It will come down to who wants it more and am guessing that’s us + we are the underdogs for this one. Just do to Messi what we did to Ronaldinho in the Finals, cut the supply to him!!

  137. It’s not bravado Limpar. It’s acknowledgement that our brand of football is every bit as good as theirs.

  138. im nt scared, im 2 exicited……im already counting down

  139. 11 more days
i bet guardiola is shittin his pants

  140. I am just picturing it now. A midfield of Diaby, Cesc and Song up against Xavi, Iniesta and Yaya.

  141. Limpar Assist

It’s the worst possible draw, and we play away second. But because it’s the worst possible draw, I just love the lacl of pressure that’ll be on the players. I might actually put a little money on a 0-0 first leg. Arsene loves that scoreline at home in Europe and Barcelona will be happy to let the tie at the Nou Camp decide things.

  142. Jeff, dont be scared

  143. Will these games be spread out over 2 weeks as well?

  144. on the plus side , arsenal would be the underdogs and thus we wont get complacent…cesc would show where he belongs
on the negative side, afta all our beautiful soccer we tend to give the opponets a chance to show themselves, hope we dont do dat

  145. Some quick early interesting match ups.

    * Daniel Alves bombing forward, either leaves Arshavin space to hurt them or does not track back enough to hurt us.

    * Cesc, Song, Diaby vs Xavi, Iniesta & Toure

    * Messi vs Clichy

    * Bendtner dominating Carles Puyol in the air.

    * Henry returning to the Emirates (if he manages to get on)

    * Walcott vs Maxwell (fresh off the bench with the massive Nou Camp spaces)

I am getting hot flushes now.

  146. Bradys right foot

What a draw, Barca , probably Inter & then Utd. What a challenge lets do it the hard way gooners. I’m actually delighted with the draw revenge against Barca, the chance to put one over the Mourinho, and the chance to beat Man U, Rooney, and expose the bias lazy media hackery who will no doubt write us off at every turn, for what it is simply anti Arsenal propaganda. Industrial size portions of humble pie to the ready Gunners BRING IT ON!!!!!!

  147. I’d definitely if we didnt concede at home and scored about 3 goals but if we still dont score I am not too worried. remember Inter/Ac/real in past games where we performed dismally at home and upstaged them away? BRING IT ON…OFF TO BERNABEAU we go

  148. James, if only we had Palacios eh?

How about Tommy V to score a header away at Camp Nou? It’s been a while and he needs to stop scoring with his feet its not right.

  149. im already feelin sorry for the left back….cuz he would get the run of his life from walcott or the dribble of his life for nasri

so maxwell or abidal , sorry in advance

  150. Jeff, dont be scared, do not fear the Barca, let the Barca fear you

  151. 1 loose cannon

true coolsteve that is exactly why I feel confident. away from home they are not good at all lost to Kazan then drew with stutgart at the nou camp I thought Stutgart were poor.T hey love to play it on the floor and that suits us well. If can keep the ball well and starve them of possession it will get them really furstrated they are not used to teams taken them on with the same brand of football they play.It well be very interesting.

  152. From a footballing point of view – adopting a neutral hat – it is a fantastic draw and potentially a semi-final against Internazionale.

Barcelona will be favourites to win which suits Arsenal but keeping a clean sheet at home is imperative in the first leg.

Arsenal should not feel in any way intimidated; they have proven that they can beat very good sides in the past. Indeed, the players will find this draw perhaps more motivating than a ‘lesser’ side – the chance to put one over the club side perceived to be the best in the world at the moment. Cesc has his personal motivation, so does Arshavin.

Cannot wait for ten or so days time.

    YW

  153. this has to be the fastest posting ever , i like the optimistic fans here at ACLF, they think like me

They know WE ARE THE ARSENAL
    we’ll GUN you down

  154. Cant wait to return to the Camp Nou.I was there in 1999.Gooners all over the ground.A fantastic place to go.
If you think the Emirates is a great stadium the Camp Nou is the cathederal of football

There is no doubt about it though Barca are the best team in the world at the moment and they have the best player in Messi

  155. This is good. Well done everybody, this is helping. No longer scared. Just bouncing off the walls excited.

This could be one of the most epic, sublime European ties in history. And I agree, we have every chance. Can not wait.

  156. Jeff, stop shaking dude, do not fear the Barca

  157. I think our midfield will be key. I don’t see how they’ll be able to handle Diaby and Cesc while maintaining their shape. Something is going to have to give there.

  158. what a draw!messi n king henry say that they would like to avoid arsenal and what happens we get the dreaded barca.Am confused here do i rejoice at the prospect of sumptuous football or do i cry at the thought of messi running with the ball towards almunia’s or fab’s goalpost.Anyway sit and enjoy the ride guys no matter the outcome!! “Barca here we come roaring coz we are the gunners”

  159. I’d definitely be happy*

The tickets will be sold out way before they can finish saying “tickets are on sale”

Jeff/limpar that was my first reaction …SCARED but after counting to 10 and remembering who my best club is I am more than ready for 31st.

  160. I feel like an excited child. Just so looking forward to this

  161. How the hell did we get Barca???

  162. In those ‘Perfect Match’ bits on Arse TV, almost all of our players plump for Barcelona as their dream opponents – because you want to face the best. They will relish every minute.

Feel very sorry that Robin will be missing out on these massive games.

  163. It was done by a draw Maria
    :-D

  164. Somebody get Jeff a brandy

  165. Frankie let us know when you’re done creaming yourself over Barca. A team we had on the ropes down to ten men with an inferior side to this one. All the while they had not one, but two of the best players on the planet.

  166. It’s great that Clichy’s coming into form and looking like his former self again, he’ll need to be up for it against the little imp that is Lionel Messi.

I just want the match to be played now! I’m gonna be excited about this for weeks…

  167. I am not impressed.

That draw just red carpets the Mancs in the final.

    F*cking UEFA!!!

  168. james have u been smoking cheap leaves

  169. Somebody get James a noose

  170. Whats with you Frankie? do you fancy Barca or something? As Gainsbourgh said, go cream over pep gaurdiola in your bedroom

  171. someone get james a gin and tonic

  172. go n smoke with geoff at le grove n leave me alone

  173. Maria, chill out.

  174. dont nobody say anytin to james, let him be, he’ll get tired, silence is the best answer for a f**king fool

    cant wait , im drooling
cant this match come any faster?

  175. I wouldn’t mind Barca in the Semis with a fit RVP but with Benny up front……. I really can’t say with 100% conviction we are going through.

The only good thing about this draw, however is if we do lose it won’t derail our season, because it would have be as a result of an actual football match unlike last year.

  176. I read some fucking Manc describe us as diet Barcelona on a thread about Messi vs Rooney. This made me pissed all day yesterday. And Bam! we get Barcelona next round. I guess we’ll see whether we’re diet Barcelona or they’re diet Arsenal.

  177. 69 butt out.

  178. Im convinced that Rooneys heading ability improving at the same rate as his faultering hairline is no coincidence.

  179. Maria chill, do u remeber the blog by Darius about FAITH some weeks ago?

    have a little faith dear
    WE ARE THE ARSENAL

  180. I like you Jeff and I dont want you to fear the Barca, you must let the Barca fear you, ok?

  181. I think Bendtner will surprise you Maria. He may not score in either leg but his presence will be invaluable.

  182. Blinking bloomers! 180 comments already.

Expect a large amount by the end of the day.

I cannot imagine anything other than two blinding football matches.

  183. Gallas really needs to come back now. I would not want to see neither Sol or Mikeal up against Barca.

  184. Guys let me speak to Maria, she listens to me.

Maria dont get excited, you know what happens when you get excited.

  185. I think the Mancs will do well not to underestimate Bayern, Maria. Their defence is a bit leaky perhaps, but Ribery and Robben vs. Rafael and Brown? Bayern will score a few goals in that tie. It’s no gimme.

  186. The Camp Nou will really test how good we are.

  187. Butt out nothing. You’re bringing a conversation we’re having about tactics and match ups into stupid, speculative territory.

  188. It would have been the final of all finals if this arsenal team played that barca team in Madrid.

Song and Diaby can rough them up enough to get Iniesta and Xavi frustrated, Busquets and Yaya are overrated, their defence isn’t the best in the world. As long as we don’t give them the time and space that they’re used to in Spain, we can cause Puyol etc some serious problems.

Agree with someone earlier, Theo running against a tired Abidal/Maxwell will be pretty dangerous too..

  189. Leave me alone guys.

I just got the news late after spending an hour outside, waiting to go back inside after a faulty fire alarm went off.

  190. its like that nike sweat spot they put on their hideously ugly, ludicrously overpriced boots…………………..hang on…

    Hideously Ugly?

    Ludicrously……overpriced?

  191. Gallas ain’t coming back in ten days. It’s Silvestre and Sol with Verma. Deal with it.

  192. F*CK OFF 69 still a nasty little thing that doesn’t belong here or for that matter I doubt anywhere.

  193. This guy is on something today.

  194. I think Eboue is going to play a pivotal part in this tie. I can feel it. Him and Theo on the pitch together is something I really want to see.

  195. None of my messages are directed at you so don’t need you constant replies…….

    What a annoying guy.

  196. 69 what are you on today?

  197. You fuck off bitch. All I told you was to chill in a friendly matter and your rebuttal was nasty.

  198. BIG BAD SOL

  199. The two best footballing sides in the world go head to head. This is exciting. My heart was in my mouth when i saw the draw and i have butterflies just thinking about the game. I would not have felt the same if we had drawn say Lyon.

What a game we have in prospect, probably end 0-0 over two legs and go to penalties lol.

  200. 69 how dare you speak to my main squeeze like that

  201. wenger might not want to play eboue and walcott on 1 wing, seriously doubt dat 69

  202. i have a funny feeling we will nick this one guys.how many pple agree with me?

  203. Jeff, Putting Eboue and Walcott on one wing against barca would be like putting Butter up against a hot knife

  204. I don’t know James you have to keep your dog on a leash. I guess she’s still mad at me about the whole Traore thing a while back but then it’s totally Ok for her to moan about Bendtner and Gallas.

  205. he wont want to underestimate them

  206. 69

we are playing the best team in the world. It will not be easy.Get real you tart

  207. The one thing that Barca wont do is try to stop us playing like Manu. So in some respects, their style of play actually suits us more. If we beat them, it’ll give us great momentum to push on and win it outright. Bottom line is we would most probably have to meet Barca at some stage and I think its best to meet them now rather than in the final.

  208. A bitch you say? Your really something…you idiotic washed out loser.

Giving it rough to women behind a computer. Well done you.

And don’t pretend that that calm down was friendly we have had words before you fool.

  209. n james i aint tokin 2 u

  210. Why not Jeff? Other than Maxwell they don’t have fast wingers. Maybe that’ll be the way to keep them pushed back. Plus Eboue crossing the ball to Bendtner will give Puyol and Pique all kinds of trouble.

  211. please lady n gentleman, dont fight, we are on the same team

    just let james fight himself

  212. Answering to James how low can you get….

  213. 69, trust me, i hardly get wengers team wrong. he wont play both of them………..i dont even think he would start walcott

he might not want arshavin and walcott to be 2geda from the begining

im sure an attacking trio of nasri/rosicky, nick52 , arshavin

walcott to be a super sub if needed…..IF needed

  214. Maria, Maria !!!!!!

She reminds me of the west side story !!!!!

  215. We are more than capable of beating any side left in the competition if we bring our ‘A’ game and have a bit of luck.

It’s a knockout competition and anything can happen. It’s a dream draw and more often than not we up our game when we play the big European teams.

    I hope it’s a cracker of a game.

  216. Maria, shut up and talk about the football. It’s not my fault your monthly friend has arrived.

  217. I agree with Joe.

  218. fab4, song and diaby to boss the midfield

  219. I guess you’re right, Jeff, but without proper crossing and speed I think we’ll cancel eachother out.

  220. Maria and G69 – let’s talk footie! No need to get the handbags out.

I would quite like to see nasri on the right for this one. He can be quite tenacious and will track back. With him, arsh and NB attacking Pique and Puyol, that’s quite a tricky combination.

    Matty Boy – totally agree

  221. Gainsbourgh69, hey hey hey, come on now, if it is ladys week then maybe cut her some slack.

Lets kiss and make up. Only on the cheek though, I’m known to get insanely jealous

  222. Can’t you shut up guys, pretty pathetic. This is an Arsenal blog, not Facebitch.

  223. I agree with Arse Shavin……

  224. So Arse Shavin, how do you reckon the match would be, what team selction would suit us best

  225. I have no complaints about Nasri to be honest. Especially if the game is open like it’s more than likely going to be. It’s just that the prospect of Cesc finding Theo with a pass while their defense struggles to get back makes sense if we want to keep them pegged back.

  226. Gains sorry to butt in but would you leave Mari alone!!

  227. Never trust anything that bleeds for a week and doesnt die.

  228. Jeff, good question, I think we’ve got to go for it at home, need 1 or two nil advantage, its acheivable if players play without fear. Away tie will be all about the break, nick a goal and the job will be done.

  229. Imagine a match without any rotational fouling, divers and cheats, long balls, and the most exciting football possible. Wouldn’t matter who wins, it will be nothing short of a spectacle. Arsenal vs Barcelano, is a dream match, more exciting than the A.C Milan one.

Manures going to get a taste of their own medicine. Wingers bombing forward, crosses, and hoping someone would get to the end of it. Similar style of play, but I can bet you’d want Ribery and Robben on your side, rather than Valencia, Nani or Giggs.

  230. I am done with Mari First lady. No worries.

  231. Come on G69 and Maria, we are on the same side innit? Adults should be able to have matured and sensible debates without retorting to name calling and mud slinging, well except one of you is a 10 year old sitting behind a computer, disguising to be an adult. Peace please. Barca is the real enemy, you may wanna include Orange Phil and Fat sam in that list

  232. As i’ve said earlier jeff,

I’d have the obvious back 4 (if gallas is fit), Sol in for Gallas if necessary.

Midfield trio of Song, Diaby and Cesc

Attacking trio of Arsh, NB and Nasri.

Song and Diaby will get stuck in and unsettle the supposed ‘best midfield in the world’, Nasri will help Sanga out tracking back, Arsh will be a constant threat to Dani Alves (not the best defensively) and NB will dominate Puyol in the air.

    In theory anyway ;-)

    What do you think?

  233. I agree with coolsteve……..

  234. We have an edge on them however, despite the pretty football, we also have a plan B, in the shape of NB-52. The fullbacks would have to be at their best to supply him with crosses, to put in. Can’t say the same about their forwards.

  235. Btw. I hope our team is not distracted tomorrow…

  236. And European nights of the last seasons, have shown that Messi can be easily contained. Manu kept him in their pockets 2 seasons back, and he was kept out of the game last year, against Chelsea.

  237. Thank you 69. Ateeb, Alves does plenty of diving but since we dont foul much it wont work against us.

  238. Yes thats right Ateeb, messi can be easily contained

  239. Xavi is supposedly out for two weeks. I am not sure wheter he’ll miss the game in London or not. If he does that’s a big plus. I feel a lot better about having to face a midfield made up of Busquets, Yaya and Iniesta.

  240. Ok, lose the ‘easily’, on second thought. But he can be contained:)

Bunch of retards these arsenal fans can be at times, writing off their own team even before the ball has been kicked. Idiots.

  241. Finsburyparker

It’ll be interesting to see how and if Guardiola deploys his forwards/attackers.

Against VFB, if my memory isn’t playing tricks, Ibrahimovic played in Stuttgart, but didn’t play at home.

Those who played against Barca in ’06 were:

Sol, Cesc, AL, Eboue…and the rest were on the bench?

  242. Finsburyparker

    Doh!

Ibrahimovic came on as a sub at home.

  243. Hey all, am really excited about this draw. Already we’re being written off on almost every media hack there is. I feel we can match Barcelona for pace, and our keepball is as good as theirs.
@ Ateeb: I think Barca’s plan B will be similar to ours! They’ll just lump the ball at Ibra =D

  244. We nearly beat them with 10 men last time and we didn’t have the same passion and ‘mental strength’ (as Le Prof would put it) that we have at the moment. The Ramsey incident has brought this team together and will fight to the end of both the prem and CL.

  245. Sol for the winner this time Finsbury?

  246. I don’t get it why everyone is creaming over barca. I think they are a disgrace in their sense of entitlement, how they used to try and unsettle henry every season before wenger decided it ws the right time to sell. the memory i have of the 2006 final is one where every effing marginal decision went barca’s way, and from my view on telly, none of the barca walls were the requisite 10 feet away for arsenal free kicks. yes i want arsenal to win, and i believe arsenal to win. but i am not creaming over a supposed showcasing of how football is supposed to be played. it is a grudge match, and just like when we play the scums from manchester or chelsea, a 1-0 win for us via a jammy gallas hip poke would suit me fine, thank you.

  247. Legio,

If only Ibra plays, a lot of doubts on him starting. And surely, you cant compare Bendtner with Ibrahimovich, when it comes to heading the ball. NB-52 is fantastic with that skill.

  248. Thanks for the history. Many folks forget that the teams at the botton of the table are fighting not get the ehave-hoe therefore they are very dangerous. They will throw the kitchen stink at you. It is one match at a time. We have West Ham on Saturday. Concentrate on the hammers and beat them bad. Three points are a must. Take care of your side of the street. This is all we can do. http://defutebol.net

  249. Finsburyparker

    Hope so Arse Shavin.

But he has to hammer the Irons first.
    One nail at a time.

(OK, that’s my quota of puns exhausted…COYG!!!)

  250. @Finsburyparker

Clichy played. He just returned from injury…

  251. By the way, anyone care to explain why tehy don’t do the draw for CL right before a ball is kicked, like the international tournaments? i think this draw just the day before an important match is not a good thing.

  252. Thanks for the support first lady, however I won’t worry to much about this thing trolls have a way of coking out ho

  253. Thanks for the support first lady, however I won’t worry to much about this thing trolls have a way of coming out however much they try and disguise themselves in the short term.

  254. Isn’t Ibra supposed to be Barcas new plan B?

  255. How will Barca handle Arshavin?

  256. I hate to break the news here but we are not the underdogs. If we hear that constant whine coming from the punditry ranks telling us that we are going to be slaughtered keep in mind that Guardiola is probably shitting in his pants right now knowing he may end up empty this year.
The disrespect that barca has shown towards Wenger and Cesc this year should be reason enough to put them in their place. Cesc will show the footbaling world that he is the best midfielder in football.
I am not afraid of Messi, just as barca supporters are not afraid of Arshavin. This is the big one for Andrey and he will come thru.
I am not afraid of barca because they will play football and any team that has decided to do this against us has felt the full fury of Wengerball.
Remember 2006. We shocked everyone and dominated them – for 75 mins ;) – and I’m expecting round two and most will be surprised.

  257. Ibra will struggle against TV’s all in style i think Maria. He doesn’t play very well when up against the more physical defenders. The more i think about this tie, the more confident i am becoming.

  258. I think Arsh will cause Dani Alves issues. He’s got a unique way of thinking and is more unpredictable than most.

looking at our attack vs their defence and vice versa, i think we have the better balance, man for man. Their defence isnt the best in the world and our attacking play pretty much is…

  259. I certainly hope the mood here is not being mirrored by the players. By that, I mean I hope they are thinking about West Ham right now and not Barca

  260. @Keys
Exactly. I really hope our players can focus on West Ham.

For that matter…why not have the draw on a Monday or Sunday evening? Less distractions for the players.

  261. They’re bound to be thinking about Barca, who wouldn’t be able to at this point? They’re only human after all… By this evening though i’m sure they’ll all be 100% focussed on the imediate task at hand. Wenger will be drilling that into them i’m sure.

  262. @ Ateeb: True true, our B52 bombs the shit out of Ibra. I heard those two got a feud going on aye? Should be interesting if Ibra starts. Bendtner will be a handful for old man Puyol, who is definitely looking to be past his best.

  263. “For that matter…why not have the draw on a Monday or Sunday evening? Less distractions for the players.”

    That’s a good point EvilFiek

  264. My only wish besides winning is that we have a full strength side out unlike last.

  265. No one in their right mind *wanted* this draw, because it sets up the toughest possible route to the final: Barca, Inter, ManU. We can beat them all, but any bad day at the office (like at Porto) will be punished severely. The only ones more pissed than us about this draw is Barca themselves.

It will be huge if Xavi is out and Gallas in for the home leg. Messi is stellar, but he’s being guarded by the quickest LB in the world, which I don’t think he’s used to. The one who really worries me is Henry, who will try to get into Almunia’s head (and likely succeed). I hope he’s conflicted enough that Barca plays the Swede instead.

  266. Anyone see the first half of the Barca-Valencia game at the weekend?

There’s a lot to take from that first 45, mainly in the way that Valencia competed for the ball and cut Barcelona open time and again.

  267. Gallas returning will be a huge boost. Other than that, it’s only RvP and Ramsey out that would have a chance of playing isn’t it? That’s a bit of a miracle for us!

And playing with 11 v 11 would be good..!

  268. ‘No one in their right mind *wanted* this draw’

I’m sorry Nolagunner but I must beg to differ, I wanted this draw

  269. Spanish teams just don’t play with our intensity – and Barcelona are not accustomed to being without possession for long passages.

And how about this prospect: How exciting is it to be facing a side that we know will have a go against us?

Even with ManU it was all counter attack. Barcelona will commit players forward – especially down their right flank, while Abidal/Maxwell is a definite weak point.

  270. I only saw the 2nd half OOU. Barca weren’t that good in the 2nd half – other than Messi who reminded everyone why he’s considered the best in the world.

  271. Alves will not be able to deal with arshavin its going to interesting on the left side especially with an in form Clichy. I personally don’t rate danii as he is a diving little garden nome that can’t defend to safe his life against the likes of Arsahvin,Cesc and Diaby

  272. Yeah, ahem, let’s forget the second half, AS! I guess Valencia didn’t have the legs to keep battling, and they lost a bit of belief as well.

  273. Sorry to be a killjoy.

Believe me, Ars vs Barca has me drooling, but please don’t lose focus, tomorrow vs W/Ham is critical. Can we forget Barca til after W/Ham?

    Arsene, keep the boys focuused.

  274. OOU – that’s exactly why i’m so confident. Man U weren’t attacking us constantly, they had a couple of breakaways and were clinical where we were not. Could have been different on another day.

We rarely get the chance to counter attack these days as the opposition is always camped in their half. Counter attacking is where we’re best, and we’ve hardly seen it in recent months. If we can challenge for the title and europe without being able to employ our main strength, that says a lot about our patience and perseverance.

Playing a truly attacking side will play into our hands. I really can’t wait!!!

  275. Shotta, agreed. But as i said at 2.16pm, wenger will ensure they’re focussed on tomorrow alone when it comes to it.

  276. “I personally don’t rate danii as he is a diving little garden nome that can’t defend to safe his life”

Haha! like it Maria – he does look very gnome-like doesn’t he?!

Has anyone seen City of God? Dani Alves reminds me of the guy who kills his wife with a spade…

  277. Time to hammer the Hammers =)
We’ve got Birmingham to think about before Barcelona even lands in London. Hope the team remains focused. On towards the Double lads!

  278. Thank you for proving my point, James. :)

  279. Wow, i’ve just realised i’ve been on here pretty much all day. Stone Cold Friday really fucks with my productivity…

  280. Shotta stop being such a killjoy…………………and stop drooling

  281. I have and agree arsh lool

Just wanted to mention the ibram Arsenal are kids comment from last season what a prick.

  282. Very true SG

  283. apart from their front 3 of messi, ibra, and henry – im not really that worried a midfield of cesc, song diaby, nasri arsh/rosicky is more than a match for thiers. Eboue for sagna (attack best form of defense)

i expect diaby to shine if he plays. just hope nikki b got his shooting boots on.

    5-4 aggregate score to Arsenal

    COYG

  284. California Gooner

For me, a win against Barca would make the season right there. My only preference would have been to avoid the big teams until we get RVP back — but I guess that didn’t happen.

  285. He came out with that classic did he? Hmm, he must have been taking notes from that highly respectable chappy Pat Evra. TV will show him what being a man’s all about!

  286. What a fantastic draw… I am giddily looking forward to the 31st.

What are people afraid of, we’re the Arsenal! Even were we to go out, we could be content that we lost to the best side in the world. And in the meantime, oh how lovely the footy will be.

But one thing at a time. 3 points tomorrow please, and if it could be by a fair few goals, that’d suit me wonderfully!

    Come on you Gunners!

  287. deano

I see your John Thorogood and raise you an ACDC classic!!

Bad To Bone really sets it up, but Hells Bells is the perfect personification of the bullish mood I’m in with regards to the Barcelona tie! Incidently I also think that it should be the last tune that we play before the start of our home games.

  288. Yet he did all from the comfort of his sofa since Inter had yet again failed to make it in the CL and failed to perform on the big stage.

  289. Tell me Serk Da Turk, Who da hells gonna win da game against da Barca on da 31st?

  290. Maria, what a wanker

  291. Well it’s definitely not gonna be spurs is it James?

  292. Dat is true

  293. Spurs in the Champions League? They were closer to playing in the Championship at the end of last season.

  294. The football gods do not like Spurs, but the fifty year gypsy curse is almost up……………thats what my mate told me anyway

  295. Ask Glen Hoddle what god thinks of Spurs fans…

  296. ‘The Curse of the Costa Del Sol?’

    E’eees a geezer,
    is Our Beloved ‘Arry.

  297. Why is everyone so giddy about Barca? I thought all of us would hate Barca with history of Henry, Cesc, 2006 final.

  298. I used to love Barca, have even got a shirt rfom years ago when Messi was 18 (was pretty unknown then). But after all the shit with Henry, and the constant scheming to get cesc, they have lost a lot of respect in the way the run the club.

In a footballing sense, they play like Arsenal so we’re going to like that side of them – being a supporter of a team with similar on-pitch ethics.

  299. We’re playing west ham on saturday, the barca game is obviously at the back of all our minds, but west ham are who we are playing next, wenger also said so on tha website

    …..We…… …….Are…….. ……….Arsenal…..

  300. Yes,we fu*cking hate barca, but love their football.

  301. Arsenalllllll

  302. Bring it on Barca!!!!! Finally we can get our revenge (sorry TH) just a pity that RVP is still out. As for nerves…let Barca do the worrying!!! Everyone is saying we are underdogs but they fail to realise we have been all year, both for the CL and the PL. I have to admit it is a role I am liking more and more. It really is a mouth-watering prospect, 2 games against the mighty Barca. They got lucky in 2006, if that had been over 2 legs we would have beaten them. We had 10 men and led for what 75 mins? Was a great night, one that we still talk about on a regular basis. Now imagine what 2 of these nights will be like? :) As far as I am concerned once we beat Barca then we will see the pundits eating humble pie as they try and tell us we are still underdogs against (most likely) Inter.

  303. I wouldn’t count my chickens just yet James. Remember you thought the same thing a couple of years back. And just when you thought you had it in your grasp the footballing gods swiped it away from you in a cruel twist of fate and a second helping of lasagne.

  304. Nasir Jones-Nasri

  305. Will obviously be watching the game tomorrow against the Hammers but will gladly admit that any goals we score against them, in my mind they will be scoring against Barca as I am sooooo excited to play them, I don’t care who we get after we knock them out!!

  306. Serk Da Turk, the football gods as we speak are climbing up onto a great height above White Hart Lane, one of them must need a shit

  307. Barcelona likes to defend from up top but that isn’t going to be that easy against Arsenal. Apart from the fact that we pass the ball very well we have more speed than they do.

  308. Did you manage to get in touch with Mr Hoddle James?

  309. Will never forget how, when we lost 3-0 to Milan, every one (and most Arsenal fans) wrote us off but we went to the San Siro and did the unthinkable, we thrashed them 5-1!! I remember watching that game in New York City and I swear even an hour after the game there were several Milan fans who were still sitting staring at the TV like it was some kind of joke! It was no joke but man was I laughing!! :) Would love to do the same to Barca, well except we also win the first leg!!

  310. That was possibly the best result in recent times. Thierry hat trick, turning Zanetti (in his prime) inside out, was an absolute joy to watch. I wish i’d been at a pub with Inter fans…

  311. Would love to hammer Barcelona just to show Hleb what he’s missing out on. I wonder what he’ll say if we beat them. With all those regrets I think the next logical step would be jumping off a bridge or running into traffic. I hope the people at Stuttgart keep a close eye on him.

  312. Lets just hope TH is not his old self when next we see him :)

  313. I don’t think Hleb needs any help from us to realise how wrong he was to leave the Arsenal. And then he gets knocked out by Barca hahahahaha karma’s a bitch!! :)

  314. Emperor Gooner

can anyone please help me out ?

i’m a red level member..the site says that the barca tickets will most likely be sold out after the silver and junior members buy them

so is there a possibility that i can get a ticket thruugh the exchange after all tickets have been purchased??? or is there no way for red members to watch a big match like this one?

i’ve just got my membership so i’m not aware of how the system works

  315. Will be screaming for Bayern Munich to knock out Manure. Have some German friends so will be watching with them, should be fun :) Guys and Gals really, how spoiled are we? We get to watch the Arsenal week in and week out, and now its 2 games against the mighty Barca, every one I know wanted that draw. And when all is said and done it’s World Cup Year!!! And we are sitting prett in the league!!

  316. No one in their right mind *wanted* this draw, because it sets up the toughest possible route to the final: Barca, Inter, ManU.

Inter in the semi-finals is a harder draw than Bordeaux or Lyon, but they’re eminently beatable (should they get past CSKA). And if Man Utd reach the final, then the final is not a bad stage to play them in.

It’s not as easy a draw as Man Utd have, sure, but if we beat Barca, we have a good chance of winning.

My one regret is that we get Inter in the semis and not Man United.

I’d have loved, Barca, Man poo & whoever in final.

  317. Every Manc, Chav, Spud and any other kind of fan has been e-mailing me, texting me and trying to call me saying that they cannot wait to see these 2 go at it over 2 legs. Which is kind of ironic because they have almost all spent the last few months telling me that Arsenal are not good enough, need a striker, need a DM blah blah blah yet they are all planning on tuning in to watch what is (on paper at least) a truly exciting match up.

  318. I would take CSKA in the semi and Lyon in the final. Of course it will be great to blaze past “powerhouses” to win, but I certainly would not have preferred any of these. It is like saying rather than the run in we have, we would have liked to face manu, chelsea and liverpool in the last 8 games.

  319. Why do you think we call it Shite Hart Lane, James? The fact is that the footballing gods have long been using your grounds as a privy. The few smatterings of glory that you have known have been nothing more than a taster so that your torturous cravings to regain it would be that much more poignant.

I would wish you luck in the Europa League but your not in that either are you James? It must hurt to see Fulham cover themselves in glory on a stage that you have looked your nose down on; yet failed to make an impression upon when the opportunity arose. Just another example of someone else’s success highlighting your inadequacies.

Oh well. Maybe next year will be your year. Right James? Yeah. That’s right. Maybe next year.

    Bye bye James.

  320. I really hope bayern turn the Mancs over they have been gloating all day!!

  321. @ Serk da Turk

too funny man!! you had me laughing out loud!! I almost but not quite felt sorry for James but then I realised he is a Spud fan so no, he deserves it :)

  322. Serk da Turk – love it :-)

  323. Maria – Sounds like they’re in the wrong frame of mind if they’ve been gloating all day. They can carry that on until they have to play the Germans, i would love to see a complacent Man U get knocked out by what they percieve as lesser opponents.

  324. Exactly Serk da Turk, one of the many beautys of football is that theres always next season.

Good bye Serk Da Turk, be carefull on da way home and dont forget da dinner or da wife will moan.

  325. Nasir Jones-Nasri

That was a masterful comment, SDT. Much respect to you and yours.

  326. @ Emperor Gooner

“is there a possibility that i can get a ticket through the exchange after all tickets have been purchased??? or is there no way for red members to watch a big match like this one?”

The likelihood is low, seeing who the oppo are, but this season I have twice been able to get ticket exchange tickets for previously “sold out” matches. So don’t give up hope!

  327. Keysersoze
We’ve already faced those teams you mentioned. The current ‘perceived’ advantage we have in the league is not one that was bestowed upon us by the luck of the draw. It is one that we have earnt. All that people are saying is that they would like to earn the right to the final as well; as opposed to having an easy route to it.

Either way you can not change the draw. It’s far better to meet your fate head on. To only see it as an advantage and a chance to prove your worth. Personally I feel that the draw gives us an opportunity to be proud of this side no matter what the outcome. There is no shame in losing to either Barca or Inter. So we have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I’d much rather it was this way then have tricky games against CSKA or Lyon.

    You live by the sword,
    You die by the sword.

  328. Could you imagine Barca playing the Spuds? I mean would they even bring Messi and Xavi over or would they give them the day off? It does beg the question, do Spuds fans have passports? I mean when was the last time they played in Europe? Are they allowed passports? Do they know that Barcelona is in Spain? Just curious that’s all….

  329. Repeats of the match-ups in the 2006 and 1999 finals – but with the results reversed. That will do me nicely.

  330. Sounds good to me FG

  331. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Old Purple Nose is calling the FA dysfunctional after Gerrard was let off scot free. The man has no shame.

  332. All Bayern will have to do is man mark Rooney

  333. I hope Gerrard bangs one in during injury time. AlcoScot will burst a few more blood vessels then. I dont often want the scousers to win but…

  334. hahah serk da turk that was funny lol u made james look like a right fool.

  335. and try not to score an own goal as that is Manure’s second highest scorer this season

  336. Maybe it will make james go back into his shed.

Did anyone bother to read his comeback?? hahahahah what an idiot it was such a lame comeback

  337. well I’m off to the pub, hopefully we will knock 4 or 5 past The Hammers tomorrow, looking forward to checking out Nemisis’ new blog tomorrow aswell. Lets do it for Rambo :)

  338. A scholes standing-leg shin-shot past the dispairing Van der Saar?

  339. everything about tottenham is embarrasing. Its a disgrace to london and football. shite area aswell who the feck wants to live there, who even wants to live close to that dump. I went on google maps and journeyed around the white hart lane area, and from the outside, i just burst out laughing. I dont know why we bother being their rivals it aint worth it

  340. Serk da Turk

I am not intending to be personal here, I respect everyone’s opinion. But supposing we actually got CSKA in the quarter, I do wonder how many of us here who seem glad to get Barca, would have still said that he wished we had got Barca instead of CSKA.

  341. Emperor Gooner

    ok fun gunner..cheers!!

  342. I love this draw for Arsenal. First reason is revenge, second is that Arsenal know they can beat Barcelona, third is that it will be a cracking tie as two teams who play proper football go against eachother.

We match up very well against Barcelona I think. It will be so awesome to see Fab4/Song/Nasri go against Xavi/Iniesta/Toure.

I am so excited about this matchup I can’t wait!

The only negative from the draw that I can see is that manure have been handed a gilt-lined path to the final. The #$^#$!^ luck of those tossers is beyond belief.

  343. Nasir Jones-Nasri

I hate hypothetical situations, keysersoze. We drew Barca not CSKA, so let’s not go down the what if road. It’s a pretty pointless exercise. And what are we supposed to be shaking with fear right now? It would have been nice, but it didn’t happen.

  344. West Ham (h)
    Birmingham (a)
    Barcelona (h)
    Wolves (h)
    Barcelona (a)

  345. Arsene says we must focus on W. Ham in his press conference today. IMO it applies to both players and fans. Here are the quotes

“It [the Champions League] can be a distraction, yes,” he said. “If we speak about Barcelona instead of speaking about West Ham that is where we can show we have matured and that we are intelligent.

“Intelligence is in life to know what is important to you and your success. What is important to us is West Ham.

“I say that because the West Ham game is the next game and in football the next game makes your life. We have fought like mad for a long, long time now to be in a strong position in the championship.

“We are in it so let’s focus on what is important to us.”

  346. Arsenal vs West Ham 17.30 Saturday 21st March 2010

  347. Keysersoze
There’s nothing personal about it. We’re all here to discuss and debate anything and everything Arsenal, the club we love. And your point is probably a very valid one. If we were to have gotten one of CSKA, Lyon or Bordeaux, I would probably have said that it is good that we have a lesser team. But I would also have worried about travelling, unpredictability of our opponents, complacency on behalf of our players. It would have presented it’s own problems. This way it is a huge battle. Something to savour no matter what the outcome.

Clarence Seedorf said in a recent interview “He who does not speak cannot be judged. He who does not step up to take a penalty, cannot miss.” But it’s those moments that define character, strength and greatness. These are the moments you want for your team, not because it’s easy but because it’s hard. Because it truly separates them from the rest. And like I said there is no shame in losing to a side like Barca or Inter. Whether in victory or in defeat, it will be glorious.

Nothing to lose; everything to gain.
Live by the sword; die by the sword.

  348. Here, Here

  349. The league is the real carrot this season. The CL trophy will come sooner or later, with the players we have it has to, but this season we can and must win the league.

  350. Eduardo to go out on loan next another idea form a fellow ‘gooner’.

  351. By the way, what is the news for tomorrow. Will Cesc be starting or come off the bench?

  352. Does the avatar change if I post from different computers?

  353. Shotta, I allowed myself a little musing on the match-up earlier today – my mind went all mushy like melty icecream just thinking about it. You’ll be pleased to hear that I’ve pulled myself together now – and only have eyes for the WHAM game.

We have such a professional group of players here, and as AW says, they’ve been fighting like mad since August to be in this position. They’re not going to take their eyes off the prize tomorrow. Don’t worry about that. They’re not as easily distracted as I am.

I drove through London Colney about an hour ago, to buy a new football from Sports Direct (got me the new World Cup one – the Jubilani!), and I could sense good things happening from across the fields. Wham will need to be superhuman to stop us scoring tomorrow. I think we might get a hatful. Esp. as they’re resting Parker.

    Diaby will shine tomorrow.

  354. It does Keysersoze.

  355. I have to admit our CL hopes have taken a considerable knock but the saying goes that you have to beat the best to be the best, so i’m not at all disappointed by the draw. This game is like a final in itself and all I can ask for is 100% commitment for the cause from the boys. I’m actually very excited about this draw but the focus should be on our task v.s West Ham tomm, there will be no room for error. PS I’m disappointed at you Maria, your kind of writing us off by the looks of your comments.

  356. flying dutchman

Why shouldn’t Arsenal go through? Especially the 2nd leg will be Barca attacking and us counter attacking. This means that Arsenal can AND WILL beat Barca in exactly the same way the games against Mancs & Chelskis were lost. I BELIEVE!!!

  357. I agree shotta, focus on the next match, always. I’m sure Arsene won’t let us down.

Playing Barca in the QF of the Champions league is old fashioned Euopean night excitement and glamout though. Like all European games used to be when we used to only go overseas to fight the Germans and Eufa didn’t let the Bulgariam equivalent of the spuds enter.

I feel confident, whoever beat Barca should have a very good chance of winning the thing.

Sounds like it’s our first shout.

  358. We are only human LA (@5:31 pm). But I hope ACLFers can set the tone. Unlike the kiddies at other blogs, lets not run ahead of ourselves. West Ham is a “clear and present danger.” Barca is 10 days away; they can wait.

  359. Talkshite have reignited their calumny against Henry, saying he is a cheat n be booed that his hand ball negates anything he achieved in the EPL. Don’t see it happening though. You sometimes wonder if these guys have got brains. Any Arsenal fan that boos Thiery certainly has a brain of peas and should be ejected from the stadium!!!!

  360. C/bob – I feel sure Arsene is having the time of his life keeping the players focussed. Players are no different from us – Barca vs Ars is a fantasy match-up. But if we have learnt anything from the past 4 years, when we are distracted bad things happen.

I just hate losing to 2nd tier teams like W/Ham. Last time they got an undeserved draw especially the phantom penalty.

  361. Not this time shotta. When we beat Hull I think we proved a very big point. I do believe now that we will win the rest of our games.

The Premiership is there for the taking, The Champions’ league is another cup competition, anyone can win that.

I hope it’s us but it”s the League that will push us on – and others back- in all the ways that Darius suggests

  362. “The Premiership is there for the taking, The Champions’ league is another cup competition, anyone can win that.”

    I soooo agree.

  363. Concentrate on hammering the hammers before any other game please!! we need a nice big win toget the goal difference up,and without parker kicking us in midfield im very confident of a good win tommorow!!

  364. Oh crap
We face Barca before going away to Spurs

  365. I guarantee Barcelona are more worried about playing us than they would be about any other team. They’re not accustomed to playing teams like us. Actually we’re not used to playing teams like them either. This will be a fantastic game.

  366. anyone know when ticket are available for the barcelona match if you are red menber.i know silver menber is the 25 th…..me want ticket :( to welcomeback titi

  367. Titi should be welcomed back just like PV4 was.

  368. Arsène Wenger has today confirmed Robin Van Persie is “doing very, very well”

Since having his ankle attacked by Italian thug, Giorgio Chiellini, Robin has spent much time in rehabilitation on his home soil.

Cesc was even quoted in recent weeks suggesting nobody at Arsenal has seen him since last year.

Fitness coach, Tony Colbert, has been in Holland this week to conduct fitness tests on RVP, the prognosis backed up by Wenger’s positive quotes.

“When he is ready to kick the ball again he will come back from his rehabilitation and it will still take three weeks.

If you add him coming back plus three weeks we will still be in May.”

    Do the maths.

Arsène Wenger has today confirmed Robin Van Persie is “doing very, very well”

    A flying Dutchman at Arsenal?

A fit, sharp and hungry Robin Van Persie could be just the impetus this team needs as they head towards the finishing line in both the Premiership and the Champions League.

Just to have him on the bench to give us 20, maybe 30 minutes, if needed, could make all the difference.

World-class players are not two a penny, as some pundits would have you believe.

RVP was in world-class form for us, scoring 8 goals in just 15 appearances this season, before being assaulted on a football field in Pescara, Italy.

The horse placenta magical cure bollocks that followed…was indeed just that.

    Total bollocks.

  369. March 27, Birmingham away
March 31, 1st leg at home
    April 6, 2nd leg away
    April 10, Spurs away

  370. Your post is a dark reminder of why I don’t see Sol staying beyond this season. I don’t want him to. I don’t trust him. I will support him whilst he is an Arsenal player.

For what it is worth I think that Bayern Munich will beat the Mancs. The result of our tie goes without saying.

    ….Arsenal….

  371. In fact I would go so far as to say the Mancs have a much tougher tie.

  372. I agree Frank.

The mancs are overated and are playing beyond their capabilities.

They will be found out by somebody. The Germans won’t be half beaten before they start by the hype that surrounds Rooney in England.

  373. I agree with Frank and Consolsbob. I can see the Mancs underestimating the Germans, and Bayern punishing them for it. But we shall have to see how it all pans out.

  374. To be honest though I would much rather we won by beating Barca, then Mourinho’s Inter, and then finally Manure in the final. Take both trophies right from under their noses. It would be ooh soo sweet!! That would be an absolute dream finish to the season.

  375. Shotta – it is difficult not to look forward to the Barcelona game. Whilst they all look the same from your living room, the atmosphere against Barcelona will be a rare treat.

The players will stay focussed, that is their job. Not ours.

The best thing the fans can do is get themselves as ramped up as possible from now until the match and then to make as much noise as possible. I for one will be in my seat an hour early with a nice flask of Brandy warming up my singing voice. You, you mug, will be chatting more of that drivel, offering nothing to urge our boys on, so get some perspective yourself.

  376. Last 8 in Europe 3 years running.

The glamour tie of the continent this year.

Great times to be an Arsenal fan.

  377. Speechless by that put-down. Speechless!

I can’t help myself. I am just dying with laughter. The folks in my office must be wondering if I am going crazy.

    Speechless!

  378. Manure will get “found out” by Torres this Sunday.

  379. Good, now stay that way.

  380. Vilanova coached Fabregas when the Arsenal midfielder was developing at Barcelona’s youth academy. When asked to comment on the recent speculation linking the Spanish international with a move to Camp Nou in the summer, the former midfielder said, “It shows a lack of respect to talk about a current Arsenal player as being a signing for the future.”

    Sensible indeed.

  381. Hollis,

Fingers crossed that Pool turn up on Sunday, but these days, even Rafa doesn’t know what team will turn up.

The Barca tie will be a cracking game but I’d feel a whole lot better with Billy back in defense.

  382. What is it with you ‘hollis?

Why pick fights like that? Pre emptive to say the least.

  383. I don’t agree with the assertion that we are in the running because teams have not seen us coming. Quite the reverse actually.

I think that ‘top four’ teams have seen us as a real threat and prepared very well to play us, aided by our injuries and the back to back fixtures.

I also believe that other teams have thrown everything they have at us believing that we are the team in the top four to beat.

The real upshot is that we have performed better against the latter group than any other team in the ‘top four’, even though some teams have patently rolled over for the Mancs and Chelski.

It has been stated before but the reason we have ‘lesser’ teams to play in the run in is because we have played most of the most difficult fixtures.

Finally from the beginning of the season, anyone that did not see that Arsenal would be in contention for the EPL right to the bitter end. And anyone who did not see that Arsenal would reach at least the quarter finals of the Euro thingy…just knows fuck all about football.

    You know who you are…

    ….Arsenal….

  384. Frank the Tank!!!!!!

  385. An excellent post Darius! Your use of the term “financial doping” as it applies to those teams that are involved struck a nerve with me. The FA is prepared to suspend players who engage in the practise of doping to improve their performance. The FA, however, have no policy for dealing with a far more insidious performance enhancing process, financial doping. In effect, the lack of a policy, throws mud in the face of the majority of clubs in England who rigorously follow sound financial policy.

  386. No consols, it was not preemptive, I am simply sticking to my guns. Shotta and I both know that the first instance was his. Whilst he may now wish to act as if he is taking the high ground, it was in fact his arrogant nonsense directed at me that got me on his case.

The mega-fan, blog warrior routine he puts out goes down well with some here (you always step in, for example, despite it being toss all to do with you) and he clearly likes that reassurance. I personally don’t buy it and if he hadn’t tried to ram it down my throat at first I would have ignored it.

There are many ways to be a fan. One, is to watch games on TV, chat on a blog, act a little righteous and think that you are really part of something. That is being a fan, in one way.

Maybe you can even come on here, say, and parrot Wenger about “one game at a time” after the CL draw and think it makes you look sage.

Another is to jump out of your skin. Book yourself some flights, and sink just about every penny you have on a week of watching Arsenal Barca home and away. It is an alternative.

The best fans would have had it planned anyway and done it whoever we got of course.

You can see though, why people who follow the latter paths might object to some freak far away telling them that they aren’t ‘good’ fans, accusing them of ‘doom’, or telling them to calm down. Can you?

  387. Two Owls,

    ‘Financial Doping’ is Aw’s phrase,
although, according to the above comment, appreciating the foresight and skill of the Clubs manager is not appropriate behaviour for a fan of the club!!

    Darius, I’m disappointed in you…

  388. Vile.

  389. Jaguar is Howard’s bitch….and Howard is Moda’s evil lil love child and James is the father…it’s true…I saw it on the Jerry Springer Show!

  390. Although apparently none of them are actually human, they are related to primates. the majority of whom can be found at Shite Fart Lane :)

  391. Nasir Jones-Nasri

And arsenehollis is a f*cking basket case.

  392. I don’t like to swear unles it is absolutely necessary. However….

Jaguar, why don’t you just fuck off you fucking cunt.

  393. aaaah. We have ourselves an arseworm.

  394. A sack of what?

  395. Nasir Jones-Nasri

    Lol, OOU.

  396. And just how do you plan on doing that Jaguar? You going to stage a one-man ( I use the term loosely) boycott of all things Arsenal? Do you actually believe for one second your opinion counts? You silly little pussy cat…meow meow meow….

    * New Stadium
    * CL Q/F again
    * possible PL title
    * Profitable club
    * Amazing team (most of whom are under 24)
    * 5th on the club “rich list”

Your right Jaguar, sack him quick!!!

  397. Or we could spend 80 million on a world class player, who can score 30 goals a season, who has massive experience but is still young, a player who can…oh wait…that’s what Real Madrid did…and they were knocked out last round…and they were knocked out of the Spanish Cup by a 3rd div. side, and they owe a couple hundred million. But Hey, they are in with just as much of a chance to win their league as we are…well done Arsene, well done :)

  398. Any one fancy some Big-game hunting? There is a certain cat that needs a-shootin!!

  399. @ arsenehollis

So are the Club Level fans are the best fans because they shell out the most money?

I agree with consolsbob – you were picking a fight for no reason. Perhaps it passed me by, but which part of shotta’s posts today re-visited the good fan/bad fan or doom-and-gloom issue?

    ****

Have you got any of that arseworm medicine on the stall, Frank?

  400. You see Jaguar this is why you are such an idiot. You (like most idiots) want a team made up of 11 world-class superstars, a Fabregas in every position. Yes, we have many players like that but by no means are all our players that calibre. If they where we would owe millions upon millions and still be in Highbury. And all without any guarantee of winning anything, just look at the Chavs and at Real. But the players we have play our style and dam they do it well. This team has matured together and will fight for each other, for many years to come. I for one will enjoy each and every year, in a new stadium, with a manager I respect and admire. And idiots like you will always be there to remind us just what a great job AW has done over the years. So thanks Jag, in a way the nay-sayers you represent make it all that much sweeter to be a Gooner :)

  401. Ignored Jaguar ffs.

  402. Well said Dupsffokcuf will try but he and those like him just freak me out. Bendtner to score a hat-trick against the mighty Barca!! You heard it hear first! :)

  403. Jaguar said

“AKBs a.k.a fucking mugs/Arsene arse lickers the majority of them can be found at Shite fart lane and also on a site called unculturedbullshit.wordpress.com”

If you are an Arsenal fan (and that’s a BIG if), don’t you think that it’s an incredibly damning fact that most of the bile and poison that you spout on here has more in common with the words of someone that “can be found at Shite fart lane” as you put it, than any Arsenal fan?

In fact I’ve never once heard of a single Spurs fan that could be described as “Arsene arse lickers”. Don’t you think that, that says something about the nature of people, who’s support you’re criticising? Or maybe it says something about the nature of your support.

  404. Fuck off Jaguar you tosser.

  405. some ugly idiots on the great ACLF…just read the “old-timers” ; those who keep the faith. We may, or may not win against Barca – but no shame if they beat us. Better than the ManUre.
Apologies – not read a single thread before Frank swearing.. (8.54)

  406. Oh Dear. And there was me looking forward to a great footballing spectacle. Life is too short for tedium.

    I agree with Frank

As great as Barca are I think we are on a par with them minus the trophies and Messi and have players than can match and are even better than Barcas.

Also it would be great to get payback for 2006 were no one gave us a hope in hell with an injury ravaged team and 2nd string back four we held our own with ten me against an even greater Barca team with Ronaldinho, Messi and Eto. The team played out of its skin but ran out of legs.

I think the story will be very different this time around. I think if Arsenal played in La Liga we would have a field day however I think Barca would find it harder in the Premiership..Teams seem to back off and admire Barca when they attack and give them a lot of space. Barca dont like it up em and I think we will give them something different to think about.

We have earned the right to be in this position and I have absolutely no fear and I believe the players have no fear either COYG. Barca, Inter, Man U we will crush them all!!!

  407. Is Jaguar Ryan Shawcross in disguise? I mean a cat is a pussy,no?

  408. @ Gooner4life Bravo!! We need more of that!! COYG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  409. Personally I want to play Bayern in the final as an all English final has never lived up to any kind of expectation unless you were expecting a scrappy and boring affair to be decided by PK’s.

  410. The idiots – yes, you! – who are hitting upon Maria..where the fuck were you last year ?
Some of us may not post that often, but we know a wanker when we see one.

Time for some unity…and TH14 may well score an own goal…:

  411. Heading back to the bar, let’s hope for a bit of a goalfest tomorrow as we need to improve our goal difference. The Hammers are not playing well and should be ripe for the picking. COYG :)

  412. So you think that you can do better do you Jaguar?

  413. jaguar –
    learn to spell.

Going to be a fantastic contest, win or lose.

  414. Two games against Barca. It doesn’t get better than this. If your mouth is not watering at the prospect of these two games then you have no soul. I am absolutely delighted.

    ….Arsenal…..

  415. No team should ever baulk at playing the best there is….and I don’t think that Barca are.

    See what I did there?

Anyway, this is the clash that every football supporter in the world …and I mean world…wants to see.

I am so excited by this pair of fixtures.

    …Arsenal….

  416. These two games will be watched in Africa, Europe, Asia, America (South), America (North), all the other bits …and probably some penguins in Antarctica.

What a fucking prospect for the future of football!

    ….Arsenal….

  417. 180+ minutes of absolute quality.

This is a match for connisews, connisors, conniconks….purists, specialistas, people who really want to watch real football.

    ….Arsenal….

  418. I think that we do match up favourably with Barcelona with the exception of not having a striker of Messi’s ability. However, if our lads come out of the treatment room, which according to reports, seems likely, we might just give them a good old fashioned shelacking!

  419. 1 loose cannon

this is an extract from the Mail
“But the form guide of European football certainly points to a repeat of last season’s Champions League final and an opportunity to see the two finest players in the world on the same pitch. Manchester United versus Barcelona; Wayne Rooney versus Lionel Messi; a mouthwatering prospect in Madrid”
    A mouth waterring prospect?
this is really smacks of stupidity.I remember the year Manure won it they played Barcelona in the semis were they parked the bus on both legs it was disgusting football and last year’s final was one sided it was dull and boring, no contest at all. We have been dismissed already as usual by the united loving English media but we will show them.

  420. Why do you care, 1lc?

    Fuck em

    …Arsenal….

  421. We absolutely and completely match up to Barcelona. No question.

  422. 1 loose cannon

2 weeks ago Thierry said “I’ll be an Arsenal fan until I die,” “Idread the thought of having to oppose Arsenal. I would hate it. I pray for it not to happen.”
Well it has happened now and it will be strange to see how he reacts. I think we should give him a brief welcoming reception, who knows he might score an own goal for us and wink at the cameras.

  423. 1 loose cannon

I know Frank I should just ignore the hacks most of them are United fans.

  424. aaaaaaaaw….we do really miss PB around don’t we?

That other thing along with Arsenehollis remind me to of AIC….creeps me out…

  425. @ Two Owls,

    Arshavin???

  426. Maria, I think that Arshavin on his day could make anyone look very ordinary.
