Stone Cold Friday: The Home Stretch Is Not For The Faint-Hearted

Even though he has been busy revamping his website with all sorts of bells and whistles (which you should have a look at by the way) Darius finds time to get this off his chest. Must be a big chest then…

When times are hard, adversity becomes a familiar bedfellow. It’s never easy to draw strength and inspiration. The last fortnight has been one to forget for players and fans alike but getting out from in between a rock and a hard place is easier said than done.

There’s a famous Chinese story that captures the moment for me. It’s the story about the 3 boiling pots over the fire:

In the first pot there was a carrot, in the second pot, an egg, and in the last one, tea leaves. They all faced the same adversity, boiling hot water. The carrot started out strong and hard, but became soft and mushy. The egg started out fragile, but became hard inside. The tea leaves affected the water rather than allowing it to be effected, by changing the colour and flavour of the water.

In the last week or so, it’s been open season on Wenger and the Arsenal players. Opinions have been abound from the football establishment to the association of stadium groundsmen, from despondent Arsenal ’customers’ masquerading as supporters to the kit man at Stoke City.

Everyone has had a say on what they think ails Arsenal, you’d be mistaken to think that they can actually do a better job than the current manager. Wenger confessed that the confidence of the players was severely battered in the last couple of weeks. You should not underestimate what it needed for the players to get back to winning ways. We sometimes forget how badly the player get affected by the losses on the pitch or by what is said in the media and the blogosphere.

I know for a fact that many Arsenal fans were so badly affected, they opted not to come out of their bunkers into the open until Arsenal’s next win. The last time Arsenal had a stretch this bad in the spring of 2009, one fan actually committed suicide.

I do not believe that players become average or useless overnight; something had to give. Taken in isolation, the response to recent losses to Chelsea and United has clouded the steady progress this team has made. Arguments have been made that the team can do better, that Wenger should have reinforced his squad in the January transfer window.

I believe that some of the criticism is right, especially on some of the tactical decisions taken, and on individual or collective mistakes that the team should have avoided. That criticism is part and parcel of the game. As professionals, the manager and players should have a skin thick enough to cope.

It is often simpler to take the easy option and focus on what we think is wrong with the team, rather than knuckle down to address the issues in front of you. It’s the kind of culture that suggests that the only solution to fix the problem of not having a trophy is to spend more money.

I am still of the opinion that Arsenal has the personnel to deal with the challenges ahead for the rest of the season, and moaning about new signings that could have…, would have… or should have… is an exercise in futility. That is what summers are for.

The story of the pot with the tea leaves has a lot to teach us, if only to acknowledge that the ability to influence the fortunes of this Arsenal team is something within our control.

The players showed mid-week that they were willing and able to make amends. It wasn’t just about getting the elusive positive result, their determination shone through the spirit, collective team effort and work rate that they employed.

Any team would have struggled with the fixture list that saw us face 4 really tough opponents consecutively. The key point here is that we’re now past this hurdle, and what didn’t kill us has only made us stronger.

Right here and now, the fight starts for each of the remaining 36 points. It’s inevitable that Chelsea and United will drop points, but we need to shy away from any good fortune fate will shine down our faces and focus on what we can influence.

The tragedy now will be if Arsenal doesn’t take advantage of any fortune elsewhere by failing to pick up points that we know we’re capable of picking up. It’s now a game of mathematical poker whose only constant is the fact that Arsenal can realistically win the rest of its games.

It’s not going to be an easy home stretch though, and that’s why I insist that it’s not for the light hearted. If there’s one thing this team needs now, it’s the unequivocal support of Arsenal fans around the world.

I’m often bemused by my observation that for a lot of the disgruntled supporters, the key issue is that they can’t cope with the humiliation of being given grief by their Chelsea or United supporting friends. If this is the primary reason why some folks go postal on the team whenever the team faces adversity, then it is indeed a selfish one.

There used to be a time when supporters were dependable and they would lift the spirits of the team, and in return, the team would show the supporters that the faith shown in them is not misplaced.

The Gooner nation now needs to get behind this team to help carry them through the home stretch. We’re in a dog fight that demands that we park the red herrings that are any grievances we carry for we can discuss and debate these in the summer.

As our old adversary from up north says, ”It’s squeaky bum time”. It’s not for the light hearted so get with the programme.

’til Tomorrow

  1. oops.here it is

  2. I just cannot understand why supposed fans/supporters would come to an Arsenal supporting blog and spout forth with the same drivel that the fans of other teams (including the paid biased pundits) dish out against the Arsenal Manager/Players week in and week out? Its the easiest thing in the world to criticise a young player (young players should never make a mistake, right).

Either they really support the other teams (trolls), want to give arguments to the pundits, journos, etc, or they are naive, and a bit thick.

  3. Long time reader- 1st time blogger but may i say this post was BEAUTIFUL! I liked the pot story also and my does it some up the Gooners- its within our control- we should unite, fight and show the world that we dont care what they think- we know what we can do.

Fantastic post, i hope the players read it-inspirational stuff and i mean that.

    I feel ready for battle!!!

    Up the Goooooners!

  4. I agree with this line of argument (and have done so for the past four years). If we ever wanted to demonstrate our SUPPORT, now is the time.

We can make that difference and I hope enough Gooners (maybe even a few of the fair-weathered ‘customers’ too) can drive the boys over the line.

  5. Stonecold, I love the sino-story and your use of the term Gooner Nation. And I agree with you on players losing form. Hey, I agree with you on everything!

  6. jbh, you should know that the world is made of both optimists and pessimists. The problem is when they cross lines. The optimists should keep to “a cultured left foot” and the pessimists to “le grove!”

  7. Mongolian Gooner

Been reading your posts quite some time and I must say I really like the positive aura here.

I must say, Yogi’s Warrior you made my day on several occasions and I am grateful for that.

  8. Problem is…I am not a gooner. Neither do I recognise the term ‘Gooner Nation’. I don’t like most ‘gooners’…don’t like them at all.

  9. Darius – I’ve been wondering what happened to you since last Friday. Your voice of reason was missed in the midst of the doomer-fest post Chelsea.

Onto the subject of support of players over the next 12 games. Since his unconvincing return from two back injuries, Denilson has become the subject of Scapegoating 101 in the usual blogs and by the dumb hacks in the commercial media. The news that Song has a medial ligament strain in one of his knees means that this young warrior will be thrust into defensive midfield duties as soon as our next game vs Porto. I have had no doubts in my mind that AW was going to ease him back into the team as he did in the past with Diaby, Song and Eboue when they had their difficulties. But it will be interesting to read the usual nonsense about the unBrazillian Brazillian- five yard passes-lack of power in contrast to his remarkable performance last year in a similar role and AW’s unyielding confidence in his abilities.

    Interesting days ahead.

  10. Fantastic stuff as usual Yogi.

“I’m often bemused by my observation that for a lot of the disgruntled supporters, the key issue is that they can’t cope with the humiliation of being given grief by Chelsea or United supporting friends. If this is the primary reason why some folks go postal on the team whenever the team faces adversity, then it is indeed a selfish one.”

    I simply couldn’t agree more.

How people can ignore/contribute to the vitriol Wenger suffers and accuse him of not caring whilst bleating because of their own pain is simply beyond me.

  11. jbh,

Very good point. I wouldn’t mind if the harsh criticism was directed at the older more experiences players.

But nowadays at Arsenal people get too brutal with young players.

  12. Interesting piece Darius, also like the new look of your site.

One comment – I remember the story about the poor Kenyan fan who topped himself last year.
I’m sure we’ve all felt pretty low over the years, supporting the Arsenal but that was really sad to read about.

  13. Shotta.

I was very much around and reading on – but took a decision not to get involved. My mother taught me that sometimes, it makes sense not to argue with fools because people won’t notice the difference.

The vitreal was just too much for my liking.

  14. Frank, I am not particularly enamoured with the term gooner, as it seems more pejorative or derogatory than anything else…

  15. YW,

I agree with you on everything and excepting a few disagreements in the past, we’re always on the same sheet. Some supporters don’t get it, booing or denigrading our players does not and will not help them play better.

I get the feeling that some supporters don’t know the difference between supporting a Team and supporting a Club! You can’t just think about the team in isolation. Our support has to be in the context of the strategic forward thinking regarding the long-term well being of the Club.

  16. Rinseout.

That was indeed a sad story.

  17. Bottom line we are always going to be in this position until the team/manager learns to play for a draw every now again.

    Some very good points.

  18. Killing yourself because of a football match is ridiculous

  19. “I know for a fact that many Arsenal fans were so badly affected, they opted not to come out of their bunkers into the open until Arsenal’s next win.”

Which is in contrast to the Greater Spotted Doomer, which emerges from its hole to spray excrement and issue forlorn howls only when Arsenal loses or draws.

  20. Frank, I’m from Hackney and lived in the wilds of North Devon for a good part of my life, but even I can empathise with that guy from Kenya. There was massive disruption around the election and racial violence, in general people are poor there (unless they own tea/coffee/tobacco plantations) and maybe the Arsenal were that guy’s only positive, an escape to somewhere without all the harsh stuff in his life, to see artistry beyond compare. It was a poor piece of decision making on his part, but not worthy of ridicule from fellow fans IMO…

  21. jbh – You are wrong mate. It is that exact attitude which causes the problems and arguments as well. Trolling is not the same as airing a reasoned opinion.

  22. No one kills himself because of a football match. That person was evidently in such a condition that the smallest emotional shock was enough to push him over the edge. It’s a sad story, but nothing to do with Arsenal.

  23. Rinseout and Frank.

I also gather that the pub he was watching the match at was also full of Manure fans – if ever he needed a catalyst to make that decision.

  24. I’m pretty sure that the guy’s suicide had nothing to do with Arsenal. It’s kind of unseemly to suggest otherwise.

  25. That is a very unlikely explanation, Rinseout, and I doubt if he killed himself because of a football match at all.

  26. I would suggest that that is a reason to commit murder, Darius, not suicide.

  27. Even more unpleasant is that some people use that young man’s misfortune as a means with which to promote their own agendas. By doing so, they reveal to everyone the blackness that fills their hearts.

  28. “I would suggest that that is a reason to commit murder, Darius, not suicide.”
    Major lol.

Just re-read the report and it does seem kinda linked with us losing the CL semi to the manc scum. But who knows what was going on in the fella’s head.

Poliziano, which agendas are you referring to?

  29. There are HIV positive children in Africa being brought up by HIV positive children, whose parents died from AIDS. They live in hope and never consider committing suicide. To kill oneself because of a football match would be a very selfish act indeed.

  30. Great post YW

  31. If he did, then that is “dooming” to the extreme.

  32. Ah, murder, suicide, orphans, AIDS – just another day on the most positive Arsenal site around!

  33. OOU.

You forget that where there’s Frank and Poliziano, there’s politics and opinion. All the more reason why there’s good debate and banter out here.

  34. In Africa, as in the rest of the world, there are many forms of madness. And it would be considered an act of madness to kill oneself from a football match. Another form of madness I detest are those who literally said (on another blog) “it’s because of Wenger”.

  35. Speaking of the very last football match in a man’s life. I would like to challenge Kevin Whitcher and his brood of goons to stand outside the Arsenal Stadium at the next home game holding a placard with ‘Wenger Out’ scrawled on it.

  36. LOL, facetious comment was facetious, DS.

  37. Facetious is good, it is those fucking winking things that I hate.

  38. A kangaroo court should be set up – we could have our own Whitcher trial.

  39. Loved the boiling pots DS, another great article.

It was a very extreme reaction if the match was the sole reason to top himself, but as Rinseout says, if watching the beauty of Arsenal was the only positive thing in his life, it could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back..

    Any news on Sagna guys?

Gutted about the newest injury news. Gives AW less to think about with his selections i suppose…

  40. Had it already. Just discussing the sentence.

  41. sorry ‘Song’

  42. Man, I’m going to skulk away. I’m in one of those stupid moods and I’ve got an ominous pile building up in front of me.

    Great post today, DS.

  43. Bye Big Al

  44. OOU – if we’re having a Kangaroo trial, can we throw in Piles the Farmer in as an accessory and also for the crime of impersonating Arsenal supporters.

  45. lol DS

  46. Kangaroo ‘Court’ is the preferred term. Less confusing. Kangaroo Trials are similar to Dog Trials….best groomed kangaroo, highest jumper, kangaroo boxing, longest tail, prettiest joey…that sort of stuff.

  47. piles palmer is openly a man citeh fan

he fell in man-love with gaddafi (gg) during his first ever press conference as arsenal manager back in the autumn of 86.

he then made his fortune extolling the virtues of the great man himself , via a book entitled The Professor.

he now openly calls that same great man a myopic racist.

karma is wonderful, and piles will serve his dues.

  48. Actually his first club was QPR and he then became a closet Chelski fan, by his own admission. Of course he lies.

  49. hiya guys, just read somewhere that RvP could be back in training around March any truth in that??

  50. just remembered why i got banned from le moan

i asked the fat one to pipe down with the “fuck off back to france wenger” shit

    he mouthed off back…

i then asked him to explain why he gave his blog a title with a french connotation

i was then swiftly banned

  51. “in general people are poor there (unless they own tea/coffee/tobacco plantations) and maybe the Arsenal were that guy’s only positive, an escape to somewhere without all the harsh stuff in his life”

Rinseout I beg to differ, he was actually from a middle class family.

Frank he committed suicide because of that Arsenal loss, maybe other stuff contributed too but that loss was the last straw. From the eye witnesses (people he was with before he killed himself) he was really on high hopes and was looking forward to us overturning the 1-0 goal deficit. Obviously the goading from other club’s fans contributed since he got into a fight with a couple of people about it. When we conceded the last goal he just left and that was the last people saw of him.

Coming from Kenya myself I can understand his anguish (but don’t condone his actions) as most manc fans here are beyond pale. It’s not actually a manc thing as most fans engage in it. They even have radio shows just for it.

  52. Then he is a selfish fool, Firstlady.

  53. Interesting stuff Firstlady

I didn’t know much about it other than a short article I read at the time.

I heard that too Maria, hope it’s true but you can never really be sure when it comes to Arsenal recovery times…

  54. Frank – ‘Speaking of the very last football match in a man’s life. I would like to challenge Kevin Whitcher and his brood of goons to stand outside the Arsenal Stadium at the next home game holding a placard with ‘Wenger Out’ scrawled on it’.

This is a fantastic idea. Why is it that people are happy to spout their rubbish on the quiet in the hope it makes headlines or gains support but they are less inclined to actually take action and celebrate what they ‘believe’. Funny that.

    Anyone for carrots?

  55. Had to stay in the “bunker” for a while, was despondant but always a Gooner. The Liverpool win did make me peep my head out of my hole and hoping for a RESULT in Porto to drag myself back to my No.1 obsession.Arsenal FC.

I can only imagine the battering we took in the press over the last few weeks, however, the old “1 Nil to the Arsenal” result in midweek coupled with other results will make the press corps a bit concerned that words may have to be eaten come May.

To still be in the race after what the club has been through this season speaks volumes in itself.

Holding on tight for an exciting ride all the way to May.!

    GOONERS!

  56. I must admit I have felt the urge to murder after defeats to manu. The prefered victim, usualy one lesser Ronaldo .

  57. So no news on RVP???

  58. Vince Lombardi had a saying when the going gets tough the tough get going. The Gunners reach deep inside their manhood and won. We find out about ourselves when we it is tough. Most teams quit. Look at the champs they don’t quit but keep on pushing ahead. God sharpens us with fire. Fire sharpens steel. Steel becomes strong with fire. I love the tea leaves in the water analogy. great. Wenger knows what he is doing. Always remember this one team wins the title. Goals are set out by the manager. These goals encompass many things not just titles. I wish the press would ask Wenger what are the teams goals beside just winning the title? The race is on baby. Thanks What do you think of the net domian. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  59. Maria, best to assume that RvP’s out for the season. Robin by all accounts is doing well, but he isn’t a quick healer and there’s no point rushing him back. After four months out, he’ll need a lot of work to get up to speed. He may make a cameo appearance towards the end, but that’s the most we can hope for, I think.

  60. Nice post, Darius, btw.

  61. I’m an egg. I think.

  62. Or tea leaves… Definitely not a carrot, though. Hate boiled carrots anyway.

  63. Its all about bottle now.In 2008 we were 6 pts clear at this time of the season.Yet still finished out of the top 2.To win the title we will need to win at least 10 out of 12.

  64. Top post Darius. No fear for the run-in. We are The ARSENAL!

  65. Oh well thanks FG.

  66. Nice post Darius. Does anyone know which strip we are playing in on Wednesday night???

  67. JD

The facetious answer is an Arsenal one.

The real answer is probably red since both the blue and white clash with Porto’s.

    YW

  68. Yes Yes Ya’ll, and ya dont stop.

Great post Darius, but did you know that ‘man who catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything’.

Porto will be destroyed on wednesday and you this.

    Hi Maria xxx

  69. The only way you’d catch me reaching deep inside my manhood, bobbygee, is in the event of waist-down paralysis whilst lost in the wilderness; leading to a bladder so distended that self-catheterization – perhaps with a shoot of bamboo – might be the only option I had left.

Even then I can’t say whether or not I’d have the bottle… or nerve… or pluck.

NB When talking about catheterization it’s possible to become squeamish about even the most seemingly harmless of words.

  70. The white and blue kits should be consigned to the dustbin!

This is where the ill fated green & blue (early 80′s) strip still lives together with the ghastly yellow / blue (early 90′s) number!

Its yellow shirts / blue shorts / yellow socks

And we can bring back the chant from the mid 80′s back.

    Yelllloooooooooooooooows

  71. Do you have to LA, it’s Friday afternoon.

  72. We just have to be set to take advantage of the loss pf points from those ahead of us is all!

  73. Team Spirit you know this be the way forward partner, we must strike with the strength of 1000 wilderbeasts, just like Terry did on Bridges Wife, you feeling me dog?

  74. You should call the RSPCA if people are feeling your dog.

  75. Especially if they way they are doing it is just like Terry did to Bridge’s wife…

  76. I wonder if he had a cold wet nose?

  77. Good to see Bendtner back on Wednesday.

I think the big Dane will show everyone just how good he is now. There is no way we could have got a replacement for RVP as good on the market.

Bendtner has size, skill, flair, pace and he can finish. The real deal.

As good as RVP was playing, he might find himself on the wing when he gets fit, to ease him back, but also because Nik will be to hot to drop.

Denilson will have benefited form his rest and come back better than ever. When you look at the games he has played since the start of last season, a drop in form and short was break was always inevitable.

  78. arshavins injured?

to be honest thats not too bad u know.

who have we got comin up that he will miss?
    porto
    sunderland
    stoke

we need physical presence in these games, so i dont think its such a big loss imo

  79. With Arshavin out, Walcott will start against Porto and terrorise their defence on the break.

Away in the CL is a good game for us right now, some time off, then a match where we can focus on solid defence at first.

Against Sunderland the boys will be let loose, that could be a 4 or 5 game mauling.

  80. Will u donut

  81. Ole: “But nowadays at Arsenal people get too brutal with young players.”

Yeah, it does leave a bad taste doesn’t it. Its bound to happen though, when you’ve got young players in the first team. Personally I’d prefer not to see players under 21 in the first team of any club just to shield them from that kind of exposure. One just has to leave with it.

  82. All the EPL games are winnable, every one, without exception including Porto A&H to get into the CL quarter finals. As everyone has said, it’s ‘that time’ now when players get a job done, and I believe they will do it, injuries or not. The battle is around desire and concentration, spirit, stamina, and bloody minded determination, which is Wenger’s kind of battle. I wonder how the fans will respond? With a leap of faith? Or cynicism?

  83. Great post by the way Darius.

  84. “I’m often bemused by my observation that for a lot of the disgruntled supporters, the key issue is that they can’t cope with the humiliation of being given grief by their Chelsea or United supporting friends. If this is the primary reason why some folks go postal on the team whenever the team faces adversity, then it is indeed a selfish one”…..BECAUSE we lose to the same teams playing the same tactics with the same players….clear enough!??

  85. Firstlady, you’re from kenya? Holy shit!

  86. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Nope not clear enough, Colonel Mustard. We aren’t even playing the same system we played last year. And we bossed United earlier in the season only to come away with a L.

We’re in 3rd place 6 points off the lead with Champs League football pretty much locked up and people like Colonel Mustard are still disgruntled. Boo hoo, cry me a river.

  87. I just realized no games for Arsenal till Wednesday….time for Arsenalitis this weekend.

  88. Think outside the bun Colonel Mustard

  89. Darius:

Enjoy your posts as always. I agree completely that our fans should come to the stadium and scream and sing until they are hoarse.

I am stealing the next paragraph from ARSEBLOG but I thought it fit with some of your comments today and yesterday’s online discussion.

“The Arsenal blogosphere is so large and varied that there are sites which operate at the ridiculously critical end of things, and those for whom criticism of any kind, no matter how well measured or constructive, is a no-no.”

Some horribly negative bloggers are the same ones who scream obscenities at the referee and manager at my son’s youth league matches. They are disgusting. Some bloggers are so far in the other direction that they also lose credibility. The internet has given the former a chance to scream obscenities in public and they get a lot more attention then deserved.

Blogs like this allow us to talk and debate about our team whenever we want. The discussions used to happen in pubs. Opinions vary which is what makes blogging enjoyable. How boring would it be if everyone had the same opinion? Fans have been debating the merits of certain players and disagreeing with management decisions as long as there has been organized sports. If done in a reasonable manner it is great fun. However, if we are going to have public forums the less savory elements are unavoidable. The decision makers do not really care what we think anyway. It is just fun to debate about the team we love.

  90. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Colonel Mustard needs to get a clue.

    Get it!

    And with that I’m off.

  91. Another good post Darius. No disrespect to Yogi, but I do look forward to your Friday posts.

What always makes me smile is the people accusing the players of being weak etc etc who are displaying the very characteristics they are slating. If we expect the players to show grit and determination, the least we can do is the same. I don’t see how you can criticize the players for not making the effort if you haven’t made the effort yourself, after all it’s much easier to support from the comfort of your armchair than to actually be out there playing those games.

  92. Nasir Jones-Nasri

“The decision makers do not really care what we think anyway”

Don’t tell that to Geoff at Le Groan. Didn’t you know Wenger signed Arshavin cos Geoff said he was quality at the last Euros.

  93. Emerging from bunker. Just could not read the bullshit after Chelsea.

  94. NJN:

I do not think Arsene Wenger would do anything because of Geoff at Le Grove. I seriously doubt that he reads or cares about Geoff’s opinions or yours or mine for that matter.

  95. No of course he wouldn’t. However it did get so bad at one stage that AW had to implore supporters to get behind the team. What an embarassing situation that was.

  96. Just a minor point, Darius. You appear to have decked out your site in Manc colours.

  97. Colenel Mustard needs a lead pipe up the Arse in the library.

  98. I suspect he’s already got one, Bernard. Hence the tetchiness.

  99. …News on Arsh’s injury…

  100. …well, I say news…

  101. Nasir Jones-Nasri

    Funny stuff, Bernard.

  102. I like the photo, Limpar Assist.

There should be a caption below it, reading: “Russian football icon Andrey Arshavin relaxes in his private gym. Andrey has homes in St Petersburg and London’s exclusive Hampstead and in his free time, he enjoys strolling on the nearby Heath and playing with kittens.”

  103. Yes well Mustards problem may already be caused by lead up the arse It is a fact that heavy metals such as lead are absorbed rapidly via the rectum wall. As lead causes mental deficiencies this could well be his problem. Suggest he takes it out or just fuck off.

  104. “..It is a fact that heavy metals such as lead are absorbed rapidly via the rectum wall…”

Or so you’ve been told, Frank?

  105. Henry was asked on Sky Sports if he got frustrated with the way Arsenal play:

“No, I am not one of those fans. I played for Arsenal and I was sometimes out of the box. So I cannot watch on TV and say get in the box. That is the Arsenal way. I mean the Cesc Fabregas goal against Bolton, the quickness, the way that he thought about it. You know, inside, outside, one – two, and back, then 1-0. And you here the commentators go, that is Arsenal all day long.

“And when they don’t score they say, ‘that is Arsenal all day long. They are trying to walk the ball into the net.’ That was the same with our era at Arsenal. People were saying they pass the ball too much. When it works everyone is happy about it, and it when it doesn’t work, you know you are going to get hammered. This is the way Arsenal plays, and I will never be upset about it.”

  106. Yes I was told that by an old professor of mine. He was very forgetful, walked with a limp and was constantly fiddling with his bum.

  107. Excellent, Passenal

  108. Henry was confident that Arsenal will fight until the end of the season for the league, and believed that Arsenal have the ability to win the Premier League this season:

“When it comes to Arsenal, my heart will always rule my head. How do I tell you? I do believe they can do it. Why? Because they have been doing it. Right at the very moment I think they have the quality and the team to compete against anyone. Unfortunately when they had the chance to win it, and were good away, they drew some games at home.

“But, they are in the battle, and they are fighting to be champions. That is what the fans want to see. And, as an Arsenal fan that is what I want to see when I watch Arsenal play at the weekend. “

Henry also commended his former boss Arsene Wenger on how the club have coped without an out and out striker since Robin Van Persie’s injury:

“I actually don’t know. The boss is just magical. It’s amazing what they are doing. And it is amazing what people are saying, without a “recognized striker” they are fighting for the title.

Thierry, you will be welcomed on ACLF with the other AKB’s!

  109. @ Frank
    Ah…I see….

    @ Passenal
Yay! Long live King Henry! He still holds a very special place in my heart. (Sigh)
Luckily, Thomas understands and accepts it.

And good comment about backbone, earlier, too.

  110. Oh you really are a super star for that one, Passenal. Superb.

  111. I didn’t realise I would end up cutting and pasting so much, I might as well have just linked to the article! I thought it was worth sharing with those who might not see it because it is so in keeping with the current discussion.

  112. - cutting + copying!

  113. So that is Bob Wilson and Thierry in the AKB camp. Any more? We need to know…and no cheating they have to have come out publicly and said it. None of this swinging both ways….if you see what I mean.

  114. It was perfect, Passenal.

  115. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Thanks for those comments from King Henry, Passenal. What a legend.

  116. “I would put some money on Arsenal – if they play the way we know they can do they will beat anybody, no matter who it is. If they can get that going consistently, they’ve got a great chance.”

    David Seaman

Nice to see another ex-player supporting rather than sticking the knife in to the current team.

  117. Right thats…

    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman

Can we safely say Liam Brady?…

  118. Pat Rice.

  119. Well if we’re going to add Liam Brady, we should probably add Pat Rice – and if we’re adding Pat, we may as well add Arsene’s wife and children…

  120. Oh yes.Pat Rice…put him on the list. No brainer that one.

  121. Nope LimparAssist…have to be ex-players I’m afraid but nice try…and don’t give up.

  122. The difference between the teams TH14 played for and now is the team defense. He played on an offensive team but they played great team defense. They conceded the fewest goals in the invincible’s year. On the days when the offense was not working they could still takes some points. I believe this team will get back to that glory when they figure out how to play team defense. Hopefully soon.

  123. Steve Bould surely?

  124. …and it goes without saying Gilles Grimandi….

  125. …and even though he was pissed off when he left we have to include Robert Pires…

  126. …never a bad word from dennis bergkamp…in fact quite the opposite…

  127. Gary Lineker believes. Are we just doing ex-Arsenal?

  128. Nope…Gary Lineker is a good one actually

  129. Peter Beardsley has an Arsenal season ticket

  130. …he said he loves Arsenal’s style so much that he and his family get down to see Arsenal whenever they can.

  131. Charlie George. When asked who Arsenal’s best ever signing was, his answer was confidant: Arsene Wenger.

  132. Ok…

    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley

Can we safely say Graeme Souness?

  133. I’m scouring the net for more pro-Arsenal comments from ex-players. No luck so far, but I agree with all the names on your list Frank. They are all true supporters.

  134. Excellent Matty. I would put Charlie at the top….oh and Charlie Nicholas?

  135. Peter Beardsley?

    That 6’6″ traditional CF?

    He was rubbish.

  136. Look what you’ve started Passenal.

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas

  137. I would add Graeme Souness to the list Frank and I think Kenny Sansom is pretty consistent.

  138. What a wag you are, Finsburyparker…oh dear when I say wag I don’t mean…you know…I meant the old meaning

  139. Charlie Nicholas knows. He pretends not to sometimes – just to make Merse look less vegetative – but he knows. He should make the list… which is starting to look like a pretty great side…

Peter Beardsley season ticket? That true? Makes a lot of sense – one of the least selfish players never to have played under Wenger.

  140. OK Kenny Sansom it is…

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom

  141. Her Majesty The Queen?

  142. Yep it is true, LimparAssist…he mentioned it towards the end of last season.

  143. Beardsley was never 6’6, surely. And he was more trequartista than traditional centre forward, Finsbury

  144. Does she play football, Matty Boy?…come on be honest now.

  145. I think he was pulling our leg, LimparAssist…of course I might be wrong. Peter Beardsley was one of those rarities…and English player with great technical ability. AW would have signed him no problem.

  146. We have forgotten Patrick Vieira…he has always supported AW hasn’t he? I will not include Manu Petit becuase he started bleating last season.

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom
    Patrick Vieira

  147. Well probably not, but all good teams need a good Kit Man/Woman.

On the ‘does she play football’ basis I would then have to question the inclusion of Gary Lineker :)

  148. Oh yes, I see now. Speaking of players who would have fit into a Wenger team, I’d like to think Anders knows… though noone can quite be sure what’s become of Anders since the LimpBar was repossessed.

  149. Oh Paul Davies….always, always supportive.

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom
    Paul Davies

  150. Shit…PV dropped off

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom
    Patrick Vieira
    Paul Davies

  151. Romford Pele

  152. He predicted WWDW for our last 4 games.

  153. LA, OK, you got me.
My favourite footballer outside of AFC.

wag? It’s Friday evening, and the synapses aren’t really firing, sorry.

Didn’t know about the Beveren Affair. Interesting.

  154. Tell you about the Beveren campaign some time.

    You know …wag and WAG….

  155. I though PB was an excellent player

  156. You still have not included Pat Rice.

  157. This would be my line up for Wednesday.

    Seaman

    Gimandi Bould Samson

    Beardsley Davis Viera Pires Brady

    Henry Bergkamp

  158. I predict a 3-0 win.

  159. Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Gary Lineker
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom
    Patrick Vieira
    Paul Davies
    Pat Rice

  160. Steve Bould is a lovely, lovely man. Sitting on the backseat of a minibus driving back from a tricky away tie at a rival primary school – when I was about 11, one of our team got a visual of Steve Bould out the back window. He was driving in the car behind. We scribbled ARSENAL FANS. FOLLOW US! (or something to that effect), on a muddy teamsheet and slapped it against the glass, giving a mass thumbs up as we did. To Bouldie’s eternal credit he followed us and signed pretty much everything we could get our grubby little mits on. Legend.

Sorry if I’ve told that story before…

  161. Don’t forget nutty boy he always supports Arsene in his comments.

  162. Make that 7-2.

  163. Peter Beardsley was a talented player. He would have done well in a Wenger team.

  164. Great story Limpar Assist and I don’t recall reading it before! If it were my story, I’d probably bore people to death with constant re-tellings!

  165. What’s happened to AVTO ? Does it normally start at 7pm on a friday night ? I’ve just got a circle whirring around.

  166. Fantastic post Darius. I found myself screaming chants at the tv (tele for you lot?) in hopes that my bretheren at the ground would do the same. What this team needs is unflinching, unwaivering, boisterous support from the supporters. We need to be louder than ever home/away to show the players we are up for it. The away support this year has always impressed me. Even at places like fratton park and turf moor our away supporters made themselves heard.

Fabregas especially deserves extra support. We should be singing we’ve got cesc fabregas everytime the lad touches the ball. He needs to be shown how much we desperately love and need him in the midst of all this barca shit. I’m sure it’s at the bare minimum an annoyance and we all need to give him one more reason to remember why he cracks those huge smiles when we r doing well. Just seeing the sheer joy on his face as he chased after diaby after he scored abolished any remnants from the past two Sundays.

Darius I was like you. I chose to stay away in the aftermath of manc/chavs like you said, a fool won’t notice a well reasoned argument so why bother?

  167. Muppet, I just came here about that. Seems I’m not the only one with the problem. All other videos can be watched but the Friday night thing hasn’t started. It’s annoying.

  168. Frank @ 12:07pm !!!

Thanks…I haven’t laughed that hard in months.

  169. ok anaconda thanks… been having computer problems all day.. didn’t know if it was down to my machine.

  170. Matty Boy, not Lee Dixon, he’s been corrupted on the MoTD sofa, but Martin Keown can go on the list.

  171. @ Muppet 7.16 pm

i’m having the same issue. problem started last friday; tried after 8 pm and it was working

  172. Yes, I’m afraid that we’ve lost lee to the Dark Side. BBC1 that is.

  173. Thanks cdd. Thought it was just a late show on their part.

  174. don’t forget the Setanta analyst who was on arsenal’s books. Pat Dolan is a big Arsenal defender.

  175. Muppet, it started to work for me now. With both FF&IE.

  176. ATVO problems here, too. Speaking of which – Nigel Winterburn.

  177. Working now.

  178. Spoke too soon. Off again.

  179. atvo came up and went again!!!

  180. Same here FG

  181. yeah, getting the “content unavailable” msg now

i would suggest waiting another 12 minutes or so before trying again

  182. It’s up again

  183. Definitely up now…

  184. Amen brutha, Amen! great article.

I say print this out as flyers and pass it on at the next league game at the Emirates.

Does a father scream and boo his son in his little league games when he misplaces a pass? Only the bad ones do. Constructive support is what is needed, as for the post-game lecturing, this is what these boards are for.

  185. Speaking of former players, I love the way Nigel Winterburn gets excited when he’s summarizing the commentary on ATVO – you could think he’s a 12 year old kid getting goodies for Christmas, especially when we score or we have a great move.

Like Consolsbob, I agree that Lee shook hands with the devil and lost his place on that list.

My jury is still out on Tony Adams – particularly for his comments about Vermaelen – “I don’t think the Arsenal faithful want another short one”…or something like that.

Adams just pissed me off with that Ian Wright-esque statement. My deilemma is that he has done so much more for the club and it seems anal to have such a statement overrule his legacy in my mind.

  186. Wonderful player in his day, was Peter Beardsley. Forgive my spelling of his last name. I remember him well when he played for several years in the the old North American Soccer League for the Vancouver Whitecaps. One of the more technically gifted players in those days. Glad to hear that he is a follower of Arsenal football.

  187. Terrific commentary!

  188. Shotta

Denilson to replace Song? He can’t do the job as he’s proven over his playing time here. He’s no DM. Arsene should rather try Eastmond who’s a defender and has proven to have the potential to succeed there.

  189. Yeah let’s choose Eastmond with his wealth of experience over Denilson. You moron.

  190. Moda should change the ‘o’ in his name to an ‘a’ it would suit him better.

  191. I hope Song gets healthy fast. Denilson our only realistic option. Eastmond may be good some day but not ready now. Hopefully Eastmond will spend the next 3 – 4 yrs watching film of Flamini and Roy Keane every day. Wouldn’t that be an awesome combination at DM.

  192. Did anyone hear what happened to the stevieG wax model in madame tussauds. apparently it just fell over as it went into the display area.

  193. DukeGoonem

Did they refuse to play Phil Collins?

  194. Ha! Stevie G is a very falling over chap in the display areas.

  195. I bet Denilson fully understands Lost.

  196. Denilson don’t have the qualities to play for the club regularly. Our standard has really fallen with him playing. No need to have bought such an average player from Brazil. Not good enough.

  197. Fuck off Howard

  198. Diaby vs Liverpool

  199. OMG yogi f-ing brilliant today you were really inspired.

I keep watching whether loose win or draw because that i what a true supporter does.

Lets hope we can take advantage of our fixture schedule and sneak the EPL. I do hope we don’t loose song for too long.

  200. Great video Barney. His skill around the 1.35 mark is amazing.

  201. I think it’s coz of his afro

  202. lol to vince @ 11.10pm

  203. It has come to my attention that Gary Lineker is undeserving of his play on our list. So go on…fuck off Gary.

  204. That’s okay Frank, the list is not permanent and any backsliding will be severely punished with instant removal. Once removed from the list return is next to impossible as there will be a long probationary period to follow!

  205. I don’t know what Lineker has done to be thrown off the list, but I do know that he has been an admirer of Wenger for more or less the whole of his time as a football pundit. He has often praised Wenger for transforming English football, has defended him countless times, and has regularly drawn attention to his miraculous ability to develop young players. Since he has never had any link with Arsenal, it is unreasonable to expect perfection. It should be enough that he has shown greater loyalty to Wenger over more than a decade than 99% of Arsenal fans can manage for a season.

  206. Footballers who are AKBs

    Charlie George
    Bob Wilson
    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Liam Brady
    Steve Bould
    Gilles Grimandi
    Robert Pires
    Dennis Bergkamp
    Peter Beardsley
    Charlie Nicholas
    Kenny Sansom
    Patrick Vieira
    Paul Davies
    Pat Rice
    Nigel Winterburn

…possibles with a case still to be made

    Martin Keown
    Ray Parlour
    Anders Limpar

..players who have been told to fuck right off

    Gary Lineker
    Alan Hansen
    Mark Lawrensen
    Ian Wright
    Lee Dixon
    Jamie Redknapp

  207. Oh lord it looks like we have to ‘debate’ this.

Right Pz has proposed to…I mean proposes that Gary Lineker should go on the AKB list. What do you reckon?

  208. OK perrygroves is against on the grounds that he is an ex-Spud.

Did he know AW in Japan does anyone know?

  209. I’m sure Lineker hasn’t been thrown off the list for being an ex-Spurs player, as that was well known before his candidacy was proposed. Something else must have happened – but what?

  210. OK let us see the evidence for and against. I suggest that we make our decision on Gary Lineker on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile I would like to add Tony Cascarino to the ‘players who have been told to fuck off list’ , mainly because he is a prick. Did you know that his middle name is Guy? And he was not born on November 5th.Actually if he was that would be a cruel joke by his parents..as it is it was just a joke. Which might explain why he is a prick.

  211. Thanks for posting that video perrygroves ii was really atmospheric and a lovely piece of work by the film maker.

  212. I enjoyed the video too, perrygroves.

  213. It looks like Lineker and Arsene weren’t in Japan at the same time.

  214. you have to feel good for portsmouth

plus its alan pardew managing southampton

  215. Frank -Lineker should be with the AKBs. even on MOTD he remains neutral most of the time its the other suckers like Alan Hansen

Will this qualify him as AKB? I think it does.
    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-1245524/GARY-LINEKER-Arsene-Wenger-bury-myth-champions-spend-millions.html

  216. Very nice vid PerryGroves and Barneystinston special feelings all round..

    ___Arsenal___

  217. Lol Zap.

    Thanks BarneyStinson & perrygroves.

I hope linking this is OK with YW:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/audio/2010/feb/12/manchester-united-david-gill

  218. Lineker’s written some nice pro-Arsenal pieces from a neutral perspective. Hansen got genuinely annoyed with him on the last MOTD when GL suggested we could still be in with a shot at the title.

  219. I have seen GL at Highbury a few times in the past. Used to sit just in front of me, but only in Manc games becuase his sons are Manc supporters. OK keep it coming who can make a case for or against Gary. So far only me.

  220. …and perrygroves

  221. Gary fuckin Lineker!
    Are you fuckin mad?
I vote against because he maight suggest something positive but lets Hansen should him down. Then he just smiles smugly.
Oh and he can nevr resist the most obvious puns.
Finally we are always last on MOTD

  222. From Goonerholic:

I read somewhere in the last couple of days that William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen were not communicating any more. I forget where and I won’t go hunting for that sort of garbage now. Anybody who saw the pair exchange a handshake and a glance after the former had produced a tremendous last gasp challenge on N’gog in the second half knew the degree of mutual respect they were witnessing.

Is it possible he has someone here in mind?

  223. They are two midfield players but one needs stats to prove his abilities; the other needs no such stats because his abilities are so obvious to ignore. Who are they?

  224. Whether or not Lineker be admitted to the exalted ranks of the AKBs, I don’t think he should suffer the indignity of being told to “fuck right off.”

When another Premier League manager complained that his team was always last on Match of the Day, Lineker explained that neither himself nor any of the other pundits had any say in the order matches were shown.

  225. Moda, you do post some utter bollox.

  226. In some happy cases, Moda, statistics and subjective opinions are in perfect agreement. You, my friend, are one such case.

  227. Neil Warnock is definately an AKB

  228. I am so happy to see the quality core of blogs have come out to lambast the fans who have turned against their own team.

  229. Neil Warnock, Arsène Wenger, Rafa Benitez and Alex Ferguson are in the pub. Warnock gets a round in; Wenger gets the next round, then Benitez, then Ferguson. Then Warnock goes to the bar, buys himself a pint and sits down. Wenger, Ferguson and Benitez ask him what the hell is going on. Warnock replies, ‘This is the fifth round, lads, and you are not in it’

  230. for shame perrygroves!

  231. Neil Warnock has my vote

  232. PZ FRO
