Happy New Year: A Decade In Review

Champions League: Runners Up 2005/06

‘The Noughties’ in bland form, the silverware totted up and placings confirmed. A decade of achievement by Arsenal Football Club, on and off the pitch. The success of the earlier years has become an millstone around the necks of the current squad, the stick with which they are beaten. As the squad produces some of the best football seen in the history of English club football, abuse is disguised as opinion with the level of support degenerating to booing our own players.

The word ‘support’ disappearing from the vocabulary, replaced by an ‘I know best‘ mentality that if followed would lead to the bankruptcy of the club, with no silverware to show for it. If the team is perceived to be in decline, the curve that some of those who purport to follow the club has morphed into a sheer drop.

Against this backdrop, a rebuilding process is coming to fruition. A title challenge is being mounted, ‘The Teens‘ will soon show if that is genuine or a false dawn, the end of January / start of February sees Arsenal entertain or visit three rivals in the current top six. Shades of the turn of the last decade with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United encountered in an 8 week period, one point gained, two goals scored and eleven conceded. High hopes exist that such results will not be repeated.

What has this decade meant for Arsenal? It is not the most successful in the club’s history, the period 1930 – 38 saw 5 league titles, 2 FA Cups and 1 losing Final. Comparing the two decades, especially one from such a distance, is futile and impossible to say whether a title means more now than it did then. Essentially, a league title is a league title and winning requires a level of consistency which has not changed. Cups are a different issue but the FA Cup earned its reputation in times long ago, now a poor second to the upper echelons of the Premier League when compared to the Champions League.

The biggest event of the decade took place off the pitch or rather the pitch was moved. Relocating to The Emirates was necessary but came at a cost. The squad disintegrated and Wenger followed the path of investment in youth, bringing through inexperienced players, unable to compete in a hyperinflated transfer market. The seeds for this moment had been planted early in his reign, gradually building a scouting network, re-invigorating the previously successful youth academy at the club, taking that process forward using the League Cup in its various guises to blood players in the hope that they would be ready for the first team in the league.

There has been substantial investment in the squad to compliment this. Theo Walcott and Andrei Arshavin were not free; Vermaelen was not cheap whilst William Gallas was a makeweight in the deal that saw the nefarious machinations of Ashley Cole come to fruition. The problem Wenger had, and still encounters, is a generation of supporters who do not appreciate such frugality. Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham have freely spent in that period; Manchester City are about to embark on that path. Money is limitless in their realms but the latter trio are encumbered with huge debts.

Wenger has been firm in his belief that football is an art form, winning is compatible with style, recusant in denying those who consistently demand neanderthals in midfield or defence; denying their insistence that only big name players will satisfy their lust for glory. This is the antithesis of everything Wenger has achieved in the first decade of his reign. Rarely has he ventured into the market to buy big name players. Regularly, he has taken a raw talent and polished them into outstanding individuals.

The finest hour of the decade lasted nine months, a mixture of stylish football, determination and mental strength. A foretaste came two seasons earlier, undefeated away from home for the whole campaign. 2003/04 added undefeated at home to that process; The Invincibles were nonpareil in modern English club football.

Yet so easily could the train have been derailed. A treble was quite conceivable but three days in April saw that aspiration disappear at the hands of their closest rivals. The FA Cup semi-final was lost by a one goal margin whilst a one goal advantage at home to Chelsea in the Champions League reversed. A home league match with Liverpool proved to be the perfect antidote, deficits overturned before running out 4-2 winners. The mental resilience of champions shone through.

2005/06 could have been that moment. A phenomenal run in the Champions League ended in Paris, ten men following Lehmann’s dismissal took the lead, should have extended it but in the end, Barcelona were able to peculate the trophy, two goals in the final quarter of the match sealing an undeserved victory.

There were many other great matches during the last 10 years. FA and League Cup wins over Tottenham in the semi-finals; titles won at Old Trafford and White Hart Lane; Juventus taken apart twice in Europe, victories in the San Siro, Bernabeu, Stadio Olympico; Seven put past Everton and Middlesbrough; 5-3 over Middlesbrough; 6-1 at Goodison; 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup; 3-1 and 6-3 at Anfield in a matter of days with too many more to mention.

Many great goals along the way also, 997 in all competitions. The best to my mind being Bergkamp at St James’ Park. Which is the crucial element of the whole period – the players. We have seen many superb players, some appreciated, some under-rated. The stalwarts such as Keown, Parlour and Dixon supporting the technically gifted Henry, Pires, Hleb, Fabregas, Rosicky, van Persie whilst new generations continue to thrive. Players at the peaks of their careers such as Campbell, Gilberto, Toure, Lauren, Ljungberg and Vieira.

The undervalued players such as Edu, van Bronckhorst, Wiltord and Kanu provided as much to celebrate with their efforts. Even those such as Reyes, Upson and Manninger who flattered to deceive in their times, not quite able to settle into the side or the country. The pick of the bunch? Bergkamp; a Dutch genius, someone whose memories are not tarnished by seeking lucrative offers from others although behind the scenes, they surely came his way.

This is the essence of the last decade. So many great footballers, a privilege to watch them to the extent that it is almost taken for granted that we will continue to see their like. Perhaps in time, the current squad will be remembered in such terms. They are on the path to glory, needing our support to help them take the giant step to achieve that. The past is gone; the future is now.

Happy New Year to you all, enjoy 2010. May it bring health and happiness to you and your families / loved ones.

’til Tomorrow.

  10. In the wise words of Gene Roddenberry, live long and prosper aclf’ers, the players past (with the exception of a few), present & future, gunners everywhere, but most importantly he who is living proof of a footballing god, Arsene Wenger. This decade is ours as a football team and mine as conqueror of the known multiverse!

  17. Excellent point about the seemingly lost art of ‘support’ for your club!

A very Happy New Year to you too.

  18. Happy and successful new year to one and all.

Thanks for the excellent and articulate blog YW and the interest you have generated, my only regret is that I did not find it sooner.

As a older member it is good to see such a cross section of the broad Church that is the Arsenal family, commenting on a daily basis, complete with the necessary wind ups that are such an important part of football camaraderie.

Also unlike many blogs the language is reasonably moderated. The nutters generally tolerated short term and allowed to have some say, before being shown the door.

Keep it going please YW your efforts are greatly appreciated

  19. Wonderful post, YW. Thank you for your considered and entertaining blog over the last year and beyond. Agree that DB10 has been the very brightest jewel in Arsenal’s crown – although he has shared some magnificent company. In these days of “here and now, without care for consequence”, let us hope that Wenger can buck the trend and deliver continued success with dignity and class. Happy New Year to you and yours.

  20. Happy New Year to all ACLF faithfull. Special thanks as usual to Yogi for your excellent and thought provoking posts and giving us all a platform to show our unadulterated love for this wonderful club. Personally the best thing to have happened to this club in the past 10 years is Arsene Wenger…The biggest travesty is why Thierry Henry was never awarded the European or World player of the year accolade…The fact that it has been won by Michael owen, shevchenko, fabio cannavaro, kaka. The lesser Ronaldo…in comparison what did they ever do for football…did they ever score 30 goals in the hardest league 4 seasons in a row…win a world cup or European Championship. Disgusting.

    My favourite Moments

    1. Thierry Henry brushing aside the whole Real team and scoring in the Bernabeu.
    2. Kanu scoring a hatrick at the bridge after coming on as a sub when 2-0 down and curling a ridiculous winner from the touchline
    3. Dennis Bergkamp sublime goal at St James Park.
    4. Thierry Henry dribbling past the entire Liverpool defence to score at Highbury
    5. 2-0 in the San Siro
    6. Every team we beat that no one had ever given us hope to beat.

  21. And a Happy New Year to you and yours Yogi.

An excellent piece. Funny how it all seems so long ago. I think of Denis now in the same way that I do Charlie.

It is so very easy to forget the excellence that the club has consistently aspired to, and achieved, for so long.

    We are The Arsenal.

  22. ‘Barcelona were able to peculate the trophy…’
    Peculate?

  23. Great piece (had to use the dictionary twice!). I agree Dennis was one of the men of the decade, Bruce Rioch got that one right!. I think there’s a lot more to come from the current team, but one more piece of the jigsaw may be needed to complete the picture.
Tony (gooner since we were robbed in the 1952 cup final).

  24. Look it up Baz – Yogi also provides an opportunity to learn something new!

Thank you so much for all your blog posts during the last year Yogi this one is definitely the icing on the cake. Good balance as usual and a timely reminder for those that need it, of what Arsenal is all about.

Thank you as well to all the ACLF posters for creating an interesting and entertaining community of Arsenal supporters whose company I have thoroughly enjoyed over the last year.

I wish you all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Keep the faith, Arsenal forever!

  25. Happy New Year to on the Arsenal family.

Fabulous post today YW, you are as consistent as Alex Song.

For quality & achievement the last ten years will take some beating but I believe given a modicum of good fortune it will be.

  26. Happy New Year Gunners.

It’s been a rollercoaster decade filled with highs(Invincibles, Bergkamp at St. James, Henry at the Bernabeu, Bergkamp testimonial… to name a few) and lows (Champions League final, Birmingham 08)

But no matter what happend and what may come supporting Arsenal will always be worth it.

Great blog as usual Yogi, thanks for keeping us entertained and informed wherever we are.

    Remember
    We are the Arsenal!

  27. A truly sensational blog, all credit to Yogi!

A more than generous pat on the back, a little bit more like the Oscar for the lifetime acheivement award goes to…Yogi a true Gunner.

A helluva decade for The Arsenal.

A call to arms to the support. Be there, be with this team. So proud. In the words of the little Russian…I am Gooner!

  28. My favourite goal, not sure really, so much choice.

Bergkamp’s balletic turn at St. James park, Henry’s race, stop, tease and race again in the San Siro all to the despair of the outstanding Zanetti, a beautifully crafted lift over a stretching Schmeichel from our wonderful French artist Bobby Pires or maybe a little fun favourite cheeky quick free-kick from Thierry at the Bridge.

I’m going with a wonderful break away team effort at the Lane, involving the countering finesse of personal favourites Pires and Bergkamp before being fittingly finished by our talismanic leader Vieira. A special goal, from one end to the other in about 7 seconds. Loved it!

  29. I remember that goal Danny, it was a great one. PV4 was always my favourite invincible.

  30. Passenal,

I have to agree, his arrival signalled the beginning of Wenger’s wonderful still going reign. A magnificent leader and a king amongst men. A true warrior.

When you hear pundits and fans alike claim we lack a Vieira, I can only be tickled. That man is arguably the best midfield lynchpin to ever play the game.

Seeing Andy Gray’s team of the decade was simply ridiculous. All at their best, Gerrard and Keane were not in his league. Our Captain was also an irrepressible playmaker, a runner of games in every sense.

    The greatest!

  31. Another fabulous post Yogi, please never retire.Wishing all my Arsenal family a prosperous new year both on and off the pitch.

  32. Favourite goal was Ashley Cole’s against Aston Villa. Not as well remembered but the two assists were fantastic. Henry jinxing past two on the right before playing a ball with the outside of the foot using the who width of the pitch.

With Bergkamp lurking just outside the area it meant no-one was in the box, but with Ashley Cole bursting in, Dennis played a deft ball to the left back, who half volleyed into the bottom corner. Great finish.

As Cantona says, the only regret you have is not yourselves but of others’ reactions. Yes he was stupid to want five grand more and his reaction stunk but for five years or so, he was a fantastic player to watch and so reliable. He was made for Arsenal in the way he played but I guess he got it coming in the way he reacted.

  33. Yogi,
Yet another well thought out and written article. Many thanks for the good work. Long may you continue to provide a hangout for the more grown up (and that isn’t necessarily linked to age) Arsenal fans. Never ceases to amaze me that there are so many “Wenger out, sack the board, spend a billion” merchants. You need only listen to the Portsmouth fans the other night to see the most likely outcome of that path.
All the best to everyone at ACLF for 2010.
    And come on you Reds…..

  34. Happy New Year Yogi.
    Keep up the great articles.

    ARSENAL

  35. alingkum zap

  36. father christmas “ze haba kline bul” . great blog as usual yw lets go forward and do at least a double after all we are ARSENAL

  37. Great stuff YW. Thanks for all the hard work.
As I get older I realise that win or lose I will always support so titles and baubles whilst very enjoyable take on less significance. Really they simply serve to prove wrong those who’s opinion doesn’t matter. Who cares if we all get to stick two fingers up to the media, Howard, Palmer and AIC? We know they’re wrong and can’t see what we see and therefore are all the poorer anyhow.

  38. As a lifelong gooner who has extended his loan at watford to the end of the season Henri Lansbury has a duty to knock chelsea out of the FA Cup tomorrow!

  39. Not to be a stick in the mud but the new decade begins at the end of 2010. It’s only nine years. Still the Gunners have a real good chance to win this year EPL title. Maybe history can repeat itself. Asrenal ended Man U’s chance at four peat. Lightening can strike in the same place again. Arsenal just sign a kid from Brasil. I have seen him play. He is very good. Happy New Year. Lots of sun here in Socal. Rose bowl and Rose parade. You gotta love. Spam bobby http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  40. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/8435400.stm

For all of you interestd in a bit of club and player history, this is quite nice.

I was actually at this final having listened to the previous one, in which we were victorious, on a radio in Delhi with a manu fan (Ha Ha). I was at the one before that as well, which we also lost.

  41. In the beginning a Creator was born..

  42. There seems to be a typical fin-de-decade mood abroad.

  43. Amazing Fabregas video. One word for him…Genius! Oh and the patterns we weave. Absolutely sublime. Vintage Wenger football.

  44. Pz

Forget about fin de decade: let’s think about commencement de decade.

    Time to consult the soothsayers.

When Cyrano Thompson gazed into his crystal ball at the start of the season and foresaw that the Big 4 was about to become the Big 3, he seems to have stumbled on the truth – though a small occlusion in his apparatus prevented him from divining who the 3 would actually be.

So let’s take some comfort from the likelihood that, when Sir Rudolph Ferguson recently predicted that the EPL this season will be a two horse race, he was using the same crystal ball.

  45. My upcoming video, dedicated to ACLF and Yogi warrior and other Arsenal supporters/compilation makers.

  46. previous decade started at beginnin of 2000. numba count starts frm 0 to 9.!

  47. Happy New Year, YW.

  48. Wonderful blog, and always nicely written and a joy to read.

Being over the other side of the planet, getting up in the wee hours to support the Team that, outside my mother, has been the longest relationship in my life :) (Islington born ’63), it is fantatstic to feel part of a community that your blog brings.

Arsene has produced a living work of art, and he never fails to suprise me with his vision…remember when we all thought Song was never going to be good enough for us?

May 2010 bring him, the Team and us, the riches we deserve.

    Arsenal – Joga Bonito!
