Tommy Guns For The Midfield

Scanning the newspapers for any update on the injury to Cesc highlights the problems confronting football fans these days. No official word as of yet but still the prognosis by failed medical students across the globe, now gainfully employed as journalists, brings forth a diverse set of opinions, his absence anywhere between three days to a six weeks, all of them requesting a second opinion before asserting that they were right in the first place.

Whatever the case, Thomas Vermaelen believes Fabregas is the complete player:

He’s really smart in his game and in training if you play against him he’s really difficult to defend against because I think he has eyes in the back of his head. He sees everything. He is a good captain too. He has a lot of qualities in football and I think that’s important for a captain. He talks in the dressing room, not too much but just enough

The Belgian was back to his imperious best at the weekend, he and Gallas containing Villa at the back with relative ease. Their partnership has been crucial, giving the spine of the team a solidity that was not consistently apparent when Gallas had others playing alongside him.

Asserting himself regularly on the creme of the English Premier League’s striking talent must surely out him in the running for Player of the Season on this form although as he is not the England captain or the only hope that the country has of World Cup glory, it is unlikely that the Belgian will be considered for such an award outside of the club poll at the end of the campaign.

Arsene has not yet ruled out signing anyone in January, admitting that he is in something of a quandry as to where he would be best strengthening the team:

I have said we will keep our eyes open and if a good opportunity turns up we will do it, but at the moment I haven’t got any (names).

I will have to look maybe as well at midfielders and how big the damage is. If we lose Denilson and Fábregas we will be short there. I don’t know yet.

Were Alex Song not going off, I suspect he would be reticent to invest in the middle third of the pitch. The cover is there for a short term basis but January is a key month. The fixtures are relatively kind to all of the top six. Chelsea have Birmingham and Arsenal visiting Stamford Bridge during the ACN, with a potentially tricky fixture at Turf Moor.

United visit The Emirates and St Andrews which may not yield maximum points. Arsenal play their game in hand next week so consistency is going to be crucial. Each of the top teams has been lax in the application of this attribute but even stumbling sides will be looking at upcoming games believing that they should not drop more than 4 points.

Wenger though received a small but potentially important boost from a competition he would rather was not taking place. The Cameroon FA has not enforced Fifa regulations which require the attendance of their players 14 days before the commencement of a tournament, preferring that Alex Song joins his team-mates on Monday instead, freeing him up to play tomorrow and on Sunday in the FA Cup. The Ivorian officials have not been so lenient in the past nor are they being so this time around with other clubs adversely affected for one game more than Arsenal.

Vermaelen though hit the nail on the head with the midfielders:

Cesc is very important for us but it’s the same with Robin [van Persie] who is also important for us but they’re injured and we have to do it without them. I think we have other good midfielders who can fill that gap.

And with that there should be no argument. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Yep… 3rd too!

  2. I agree with you Yogi, Vermaelen would definitely be a contender for player of the season along with Song and Fabregas. Also, RVP before his injury was in there with a chance too. Maybe Diaby might make a late bid for it with a magnificent second half of the season, he has the ability to do it.

If Senderos is leaving, perhaps the one player we need is a utility player who can cover CB/RB/DM. We certainly don’t need too many bodies to disrupt current squad harmony.

  3. What about that Earwiges Madeuro who was being talked about in the summer?

  4. Eastmond has played at CB, RB and DM – it’s just a shame he’s a couple of years too young at the moment.

  5. Earwiges Madeuro? I prefer Nepauli Yatikilla, who’s pretty big and strong, as his name suggests.

  6. Veloso or Matuidi, pls

  7. Still think Veloso would be great.

  8. Sorry, bit hungover…

  9. Pass, I think your right about our need for a utility player.

    or:
With 3 reliable LB’s, Arsene should consider using someone at another position.

Clichy returns soon – slot him in at RB (when’s he’s at LB, he can’t cross accurately anyway) then move Sagna to DM.

  10. Sorry for off topic post – the below in quotations is concerning the previous thread, I posted just as Yogi started a new one. Damn!

Agreed re Vermaelen: has been so good he’s even surpassed Wenger’s hopes.

“Consolbob, was it Alan ‘Twatface’ Hansen? He should be ignored at all costs, his depression over Liverpool’s hilarious plight is turning him into a dark and bitter man full of fear and hatred. I think he should start wearing a big hood like “The Emperor”. Well it would amuse me anyway.

Apart from being a cosmic twat, Gabriel Marcotti is also a Chelsea season ticket holder. Coloured as his opinion is anything he says should be taken with a large pinch of shite.

Lest us also not forget he worked at the Satan’s very own soiled arserag – THE DAILY FUCKING MAIL prior to moving the The Times (The Mail in a posh frock).

Cosolbob – I like your prediction I’ve been thinking along similar lines. I stand to win £500+ if we take the league this year. I don’t normally bet but I felt in my guts we would challenge for the title this year and 10.5-1 was too good to miss.

I also agree with PIRESAHOLIC, insomuch as we would surely be well clear of the rest of the table with an injury free squad. No one seems to be pointing this out or even noticing it.

There are some benefits though – would Diaby have had as many opps with a fully fit squad? Traore’s value must have soared upwards in recent weeks.

Plus we are still right in it and can hope for some very fresh and hungry players to return.

IF we triumph this season all the critics will have to throw themselves on spikes – as we will have done it in the face of obscene spending, whilst we make a profit, with players who are too small and in the face of a ridiculous injury list that no other premiership club would have been equipped to surmount.

This is such an exciting season and those whingeing mingebags Pedro and especially Geoff should definitely just go and fuck themselves and each other.

    Up The Arsenal.

    :0P”

  11. I thought this piece was going to be how Tommy would play in midfield (assumming we weren’t completely reliant on hiom at the back). he’d be a brilliant replacement for Song at DM…

Bit of a concern if Denlison is out as he is the obvious man to stand in for Song, with Rambo stepping in for Cesc.

  12. T. V. has been a joy to watch ever since he joined, his covering, speed and jumping remind me of Frank McClintock in his prime, and wasn’t it great to see him looking so well at 70.

Bendtner cant be far off fitness, so another target man to play along side him and Arshavin would be an interesting proposition, giving us options that we haven’t had, since addy left. not that he was much use to Bendy.

The second half of the season will be hard and a few extra options would ease the strain a little I feel. So a big man up front as the rest of the squad returning from injury would give Wenger rotation options to make him drool and us to savior

  13. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Flamini might just be what wenger needs. Reserve with AC Milan, cheap and wont ask for much in terms of salary. I think he learnt his lesson the hard way at milan.

  14. Father Christmas

I very much doubt if someone as dogmatic as Flamini was about leaving Arsenal, would eat humble pie and come back and would Wenger or the squad want him anyway, loyalty and team spirit will be paramount in this second half of the season and his would surely be suspect.

  15. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Mathieu Flamini… Last piece of the jigsaw lads…

  16. We should go for Dutch defender Grote Klootzak, Bulgarian DM Твърд Копеле, and Filipino centre forward Taas Bastardo. There now stop talking about other team’s players and talk about ours.

  17. Wenger playing mind games again and creating a smokes screen for trying to get a player in a different position and helping the journos to earn a crumb through ridiculous speculations once silly season starts on 1st of Jan.

I thought that all Arsenal players are utility players and Arsene simply shuffles the pack? I think there are not many players who started of playing in their desired position. I used to think whats the point in that but Arsene has proved there is method in the madness. Song, Nasri, Diaby, Ramsey have played in all positions in midfield. Although Arsene has always made welcome accquisitions in the January transfer window including notably Diaby and Ade. Another accquisition of this calibre will always be welcome.

I do not however think we are neccessarily toothless in midfield. Thats obviously canon fooder for D+G merchants.. We have coped without Cesc,RVP, Fabregas and Rosicky for long periods. In his current form he is a great miss. We just dont seem to have the rub of the green with injuries.

  18. I hope his dream comes true after a fantastic season for Arsenal

With Theo to come on and stretch the game.

  20. Yes, Passenal. I like how he targets scoring more goals too!

  21. My sides are hurting steww and sooth…keep the names coming

  22. I had forgotten about Craig Eastmond, One of Us. Maybe Arsene will surprise us once again?

  23. I’ve got my eye on Alotta Fagina in the transfer window.

  24. Haven’t you always, Perry?

  25. No, it was the other scouse apologist, ‘Lawro’.

  26. Get in touch with Tiger Woods, perrygroves. I hear the two are close friends.

  27. “Diaby is enjoying his best form since arriving at Arsenal in January 2006.

The former Auxerre player, who has scored five goals in 13 starts this season, puts his resurgence down to managing to avoid injuries.

‘Since my arrival four years ago I have picked up physical knocks,’ added Diaby. ‘This season I am playing a lot and I have got enormous confidence in myself.

‘Also the tactical system of the team, 4-3-3, suits me perfectly. I’m developing in this role and I’m blossoming.

‘I’m not surprised (by my success). I knew that it would come when I sorted out all my physical problems.’

Diaby, who missed the 2006 Champions League final with a broken ankle, admits his injury problems were so bad that he thought about quitting football altogether.

‘I asked myself questions because they were really hard times to live,’ he added.

‘I started to have enough of football and getting injured all the time. I wanted to stop, to give everything up.

‘But I hung on. I worked a lot and now I am getting rewarded.’

I’m very glad he didn’t give up

  28. FATHER CHRISTMAS

mathieu flamini… Now theres a good lad.

  29. Is there a player available whose name sounds like Arsenal? I think that is who we need!

  30. You might as well forget that one FC – he lied to Arsene’s face about signing his contract and then left for money. He will not be trusted at Arsenal again, so he can rot on the Milan bench.

  31. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Petre Vassenal of FC Zurich is a good leftback and also Slobodan Arsznalic of Ommonia nicosia is not bad.

  32. Indeed, it’s better to have the stench of rotting Flamini on the Milan bench than on the Arsenal bench.

  33. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Everyone makes mistakes passenal. Give the lad a chance. He’s not a judas like ade or cole or hleb. Its the season for forgiveness. He never slacked when he played for us.

  34. Craig Eastmond.

  35. Whoah, whoah, whoah – Dom-Uhz Roz-Its-Ki could be back for tomorrow?! (rubs hands together) Where’s Kitchen Sink? Mozart cometh.

  36. Passenal, good points re Song and Denilson. But take a closer look at the team positioning (eg Telegraph) you will find that both Song and Denilson take up the deepest positions. Both have a licence to roam forward when appropriate and because Song is the better dribbler does so more often. When one goes forward the other maintains position.
The other interesting thing with the Villa game was the very heavy Arsenal emphasis on attacking down the right.
Denilson, Nasri and Song all dominated the midfield with Villa hardly getting the ball, and when they did just hoofed it downfield.

  37. How is Flamini not a Judas?

He was close to being sold when Arsene gave him an opportunity to prove himself, which he duly did.

Instead of showing gratitude for the opportunity he said that he’d sign only to betray that promise and move to AC Milan.

The very same thing he did to Marsielle, I don’t see much difference between Flamini, and the other ungrateful traitors.

Just like Ade he wanted a big fat paycheck after 1 good season.

  38. I would not want Flamini back but at the same time, I do not have any ill feelings towards him.

He served us well his last season, asked for a very reasonable reward which we did not give , so he moved on. All the best to him.

  39. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Craig Eastmond’s goatee reminds me of Craig David.

  40. On the contrary, Father Christmas, Flamini is more treacherous than Hleb, Adebayor, and perhaps Cole. Flamini’s crime is considered less because he is not such a good player as the others. Forgiveness is irrelevant to this case. I’m sure Wenger has forgiven Flamini; but to give another chance to man as faithless as Flamini would not be forgiveness but folly.

  41. We need a defender more than anything in January.

Senderos will leave. There will be 3 CB’s at the club. It would be miraculous if we got through the rest of the season with that. Now is the time to invest in another centre back, who can be around long term along with Vermaalen, Djourou, and Bartley.

Bendtner will come back into the team and start scoring the goals for us.

  42. Flamini sold his career for a mess of pottage. So be it.

  43. FATHER CHRISTMAS

I feel the same way ritesh. Flamini always give 100%. He’s no judas. Flamini was a free agent. Bosman and all that. Unlike cole and ade. As cover for song thats all i ask.

  44. Flamini and Hleb are both donuts.

  45. FATHER CHRISTMAS

In a sense, u do have a point poliziano. But he could be useful in the run in experience wise. I do expect david villa to be a done deal btw.

  46. FATHER CHRISTMAS

If i could mention, alex hleb is very remorseful nowadays.

  47. While all the media focus is on a striker, I am certain that Wenger will be looking to bolster the defence.

He already mentioned that we are short at the back, I don’t think Senderos is part of Wenger’s plans.

  48. I think Senderos was not sold because of the injury to Djourou.

But he will probably want to move on in a WC year.

If we get a defender, Wenger will want one who will be prepared to sit on the bench and not shout in the media every week about playing time, so not high profile.

  49. Have i just witnessed the most boring, uninteresting consecutive headlines on the sky sports news breaking news bar?!

Alex Ferguson’s horse ‘What a friend’ wins the lexus race at Leopardstown.

    Preston sack manager Alan Irvine

  50. unless you’re a preston fan

  51. I hope Fabregas’s hammie is okay. He needs lots of ice and strength the back of the leg not the quad. He is the key with RVP out. Wenger needs to splash some cash for another striker. This is a must. Get two wins baby and the title is within site. Go Gunners and get biog “W” Spam bobbyhttp://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  52. The link didn’t work for me, bobbygee.

One to put in the ACLF Poetry corner

  53. Villa vs Liverpool should be an exciting match.

  54. FATHER CHRISTMAS

  55. FATHER CHRISTMAS

man city wants wenger. A a a bahahahahahahaha bohahahahaha ha ha huhuhu hehehehehehehehe haha behehehehehe hahahahaha!!!

  56. Flamini is a judas.

  57. a double glazed judas

  58. FATHER CHRISTMAS

    sheikhs are full of bollocks.

  59. Father Christmas i am arab and that is quite offensive.

F*ck Sheikh mansour bin zayed al nayham, though

  60. Just returned from a little Christmas holiday in Florida with my girlfriends Gunner father. A cracking weekend to say the least. Hopefully a quick recovery is in the cards for our captain. If not we have the best manager in the world to sort it out, so I’m not too worried.

Quick question for the hardcore Gunners, anyone remember an American lad by the name of Danny (something that started with a C… if I remember correctly) who supposedly featured a couple of times for Arsenal and is now a scout for the Gunners? I met a lad on the flight who happened to be a friend of his and commended me on my Arsenal top. Wanted to know if this guy was just talking bollocks. I googled what I thought he said his name was and it didn’t return f*ck all, but then again I was drinking whiskey at the time of the conversation so…who knows.

  61. It’s Danny Karbassiyoon, NJN. Not an easy name to spell!

  62. He scored in a carling cup match vs citeh. That’s all i remenber

  63. even Judas, wasn’t a Judas..

Thanx for the wonderful news LimparAssist, looking forward to those no looker passes and trivela’s, perhaps even a thunder bolt..

we’re quite blessed to have so many hubs, hearts and tickers..

  64. It’s Danny Karbassioon and he did play for us briefly, scored a wonder goal against man city in the carling cup and is now an Arsenal scout in America as he had to give up playing due to knee problems.

  65. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Jesus was actually fond of judas. Jesus knew judas was going to betray him. Jesus knew judas was going to make the ultimate sacrifice.

  66. “It’s Danny Karbassiyoon, NJN. Not an easy name to spell!”

You’re right about that spelling OoU as proven by my earlier post!

  67. Having betrayed him once, Jesus would not be inviting him to repeat the trick FC

  68. FATHER CHRISTMAS

I meant those sheikhs frm city zap. No offence. Shaaleem aleikum zap.

  69. Alas, poor Judas! Poor innocent Judas! It’s the same with Eve. Feminist scholars proved long ago that Eve didn’t actually eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, but phallocrats have continued to perpetuate the myth as a means of subjugating women.

  70. lol…NJN…sounds familiar. I’ll look.

  71. Yeah, it’s like when Jesus banished Mandy from the garden of Edam and didn’t let her back in; he said, “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me…you can’t get fooled again”.

  72. North American scout Danny Karbassiyoon…oh I’m slow.

  73. FATHER CHRISTMAS

Satan has a role in exploiting the situation in the case of eve.

  74. the sheikhs from citeh are from the uae

  75. That’s it! Wow! I sat next to a close mate of Danny Karbassiyoon! Wicked! I remember when someone posted that goal a while back, as well.

Shout outs to OneOfUs, Zap, and Passenal for the replies!

  76. Father Christmas I think we have as much chance of signing David Villa as we do your namesake. He is way out of our price range probably city bound.

  77. dandan i agree.

Let’s face facts coz the fact is citeh will do a chelsea, and will over the years get stronger until they become dominant. I would not be surprised if in 5-10 years it will be a race between them and us

  78. i think he’d be the first american to score for the arsenal first team as well.

    very approachable guy.

  79. Everton getting Donovan on loan was a clever move, he’s a great player i saw him a few times in the mls and in the confeds cup.

  80. Spaceships are slow

  81. Perry Groves is a platinum idiot.

Heard him on the radio on my way home talking about Arsenal still needing a ‘bruiser’ and ‘hardman’ in the midfield. It shows so much disrespect to Alex Song.

As a unit, the Arsenal midfield plays better than any individual so called big name superstar player out there and I wouldn’t change it for the world. The team ethic and the team work is what makes us play the way we do – and even Cesc wouldn’t have a licence to terrorize opponents if it wasn’t for the safety net provided by Song, Denilson or Diaby.

What is it with ex-players like Merson, Perry Groves and Ian Wright. Are they threatened by their media paymasters that they won’t be paid unless they talk shit about Arsenal?

  82. Darius, Yeah heard the same garbage from Groves! Song is in the top 3 defensive midfielders in the country right now, maybe higher, what is it with these loons!

  83. Darius they’re just trying to fit in too much so it blinds them..

  84. They come from a simpler time, when limited players made up for their lack of technical skill with physicality and grit. They lack the imagination to see that there is another way and that is the modern Arsenal way. It is not Song’s physical qualities that make him stand out, but his reading of the game and ability to make good use of the ball when he wins it.

  85. Also they don’t have the tactical nous to see what AW has built and how it works. They can’t understand a midfield without a Darren Fletcher type in it. We have such wonderful multi talented footballers, all easy on the ball and many who can tackle.
TV is as good on the ball as most creative mids in other teams. There is nothing remarkable about our centre backs dribbling the ball past opposing fullbacks, or Alex song, notionally our DM, dragging back and pirouetting a la Johan Cruijff.

  86. Just imagine though – if we win the league, all these misconceptions will finally be laid to rest; the urgent need for an enforcer in the midfield, a natural left-winger and the mythical monster centre-back. Poof! gone forever, just like that.

On that subject, I was watching Gallas and Vermaelen keeping pace with Young, Heskey and Agbonlahor on Sunday. All the time I kept thinking, “What we really need is a big, lumbering giant to keep these pacey forwards at bay. If I can see it, why can’t Wenger?”.

  87. I hope so OOU – I thought the Villa forwards looked shocked that they had come up against such pacy defenders, so their usual long ball tactic didn’t work and they have no plan B as their midfield lacks creativity.

  88. Big and lumbering – Come back Willie Young!

  89. a pretty cool picture i hav it as my screensaver

  90. Yeah, Passenal. I think Villa are Bolton with faster forwards. We’ve got their number now.

And all giants are big, of course!

  91. The midfield enforcer is not the answer for Arsenal. We had that with Viera and we had the invincibles, the best team of the past decade or so in the PL.

But even the invincibles were not good enough for Europe.

We need 3 box to box midfielders who can ALL defend and ALL attack. This is what the NEW ARSENAL is about.

Wenger is building a team which will dominate the PL AND Europe. In Arsene we trust.

  92. I can’t wait for Wednesday night.#
    COME ON

  93. What an awesome song.

  94. Passenal / Steww

Couldn`t agree more. Song is far too good on the ball to be classed as the bruiser / hardman we `need`.

Someone like a Cattermole would be lost in a side like ours.

Actually I`ve noticed one or two nice little niggly fouls from Denilson of late to break up play. The boys are growing up fast.

  95. The funny thing is that most of these misguided pundits are trying to find a way to undig their graves and look for any excuse to illustrate that Arsenal’s performances are flukes. None of them are really prepared to start eating humble pie that is being baked at London Colney.

When Chelsea and Man Utd play like shit and grind out a result, they’re called grafters and praised for having the ‘stuff’ that champions are made of.

When Arsenal totally obliterate a one dimensional Aston Villa, apparently, we were short of ideas and couldn’t break Villa down for 65 minutes until Cesc came on. I put it to you that Cesc was successful in dessimmating Villa because of the ground work the entire team had done to that point. Everyone from Almunia through to Eduardo had played a damn good game and played for each other.

In fact, I was so happy for Almunia as it looks like his confidence is coming back and he was a monster in the box. I was so happy for Traore who is growing in confidence each and every game. His cross field pass to Theo was a peach and it’s great to see Traore having the confidence to start such a devastating counter attack.

Why the fuck didn’t Villa then break us down. If Chelsea or Manure tonked Villa by 3 nil in the manner by which we did they would have been coronated as Champions in waiting – with their strength and depth as well as their power and physique highlighted as attributes of champions. This is not even mentioning that they will be praised for dealing with all the injuries and still being on top.

There’s this obsession with a throwback to the 98 2001 and the ‘Invincibles’ title winning teams specifically to refer to their physicality and ‘bruising’ abilities of the players.

Will someone tell these fuckers that the Arsenal team has moved on to a new philosophy of football and we’ll see them when they get there. They’re just too stupid to realise the revolution of the game as is being trail blazed by Wengerball.

Besides – Cesc, Song and Diaby are stamping their authority as the best midfield unit in the game. To think that they have an average age of 22 years and have been playing together for at least 2 years, it’s frightning to think that these guys will be dominating European football for the next 8 to 10 years. Shoot! Just thinking about this midfield trio flanked by other formidible talents like Denilson, Nasri, Rambo, Wiltshire, The Coq, Craig Eastmond – Jesus Christ! This team is frightning.

  96. The transfer window is opening soon and it is pretty clear that Wenger is looking for excuses not to sign anybody.

The longer the window goes on, the less likelihood of a signing.

He came out with the less than believable statement that we are now looking for a midfielder. This is after we were supposed to be looking for a striker. This means that the whole thing is a smokescreen.

    The truth is out there.

  97. Liverpool 1-3 A.Villa
    Man U 0-1 A.Villa
    A.Villa 2-1 Chelsea
    Arsenal 3-0 A.Villa

  98. Vieira was not an enforcer. That label does him no credit at all. He was the ultimate box-to-box midfielder. The only reason he didn’t score more for us was because he was so unselfish.

Pires, Henry, Bergkamp and Vieira were spectacular talents. Arsenal fans moan that we never replaced x or y, but you don’t replace players of that calibre. It can’t be done. It’s because of our jingoistic press and oundits – and their churlish attitude towards foreign talent – that these guys aren’t held in the same esteem as the all-time world greats.

I think that’s one of the reasons people were so hard on Song at first. Here was a young man in the Vieira role, but he needed time to develop and made a few mistakes while finding his feet. It was a foreign concept to many fans, who’d been spoiled after watching one of the game’s pull it off so effortlessly for 10 years.

Now, I still think we’re better today. Responsibility is better shared among the team, and all our players in their early and mid-twenties are flourishing into the extraordinary players AW always knew they’d become.

  99. yes Traore would not have made that pass a few weeks back

  100. I was listening to a bit of Danny Baker (accidentally) but why pundits don’t have any basis for their suggestions on Arsenal merely lies in the fact that they think it’s “too insane” to quote Baker, to see Arsenal winning.

It’s a shame as we have an “enforcer” who is more than that yet people clamour for another one.

I did write an article that may be of interest to some.
    http://arsenalcolumn.wordpress.com/2009/12/24/the-making-of-a-modern-of-attacking-super-club/

  101. Ah, pre-Oasis era britpop. There’s nothing like it, NJN!

I’ve been wanting to share this song since the music discussion a couple of weeks ago. It’s so cool:

  102. Darius,

There was a journalist on the Sunday Suppository two weeks ago (I think it was the 20th December edition), who was particularly disparaging about Arsenal. He said that we are trying to play like Barcelona – “Barcelona lite” he called us, trying to spray around the ball and play their system, but he said Wenger would never win anything because winning trophies was about physical strength, citing the Chelsea result as an example.

I had to laugh at this tosser. I think he was one of the scumbags from the tabloids. There seems to be an element, the likes of David Platt, who somehow believe that the whole strategy is wrong and we should be kicking people. These people have got no clue and it’s amazing they are in prominent positions.

  103. The players are also good at moving the ball in such a fashion that it ends up in the back of the net, thus enabling the mitsubishi motors scoreboard to display 1 goal in the favour of Arsenal, but the scoreboards provided in other stadiums may differ, made by other electrical outfits

  104. I don’t think it’s accurate to describe Viera as an enforcer. That was Petit’s or Grimandi’s or even Gilberto’s job if such a role has ever existed in an AW team. Occasionly yes (2005 FA cup final?), but, well, the first time I saw Viera play at Highbury he tore down the pitch scored a screamer from 25 yards out against Newcastle to more or less clinch the league title.

CM will do for me when describing Denilson, Diaby or even Song, although Song’s been groomed to play in defence as well as midfield.

I know my posts aren’t up to the Byronic standards required by some, but Walter over at Untold Arsenal just posted a much more articulate article explaining the point I tried to make the other day: That some fans will always be able to moan because an opponent barged a 19 year old Denilson off a football, but that they won’t be able to cry about such things by time he’s 23, as he’ll be heavier, faster, stronger and wiser. It’s not exactly rocket science, & I’m sure it’s a thought that has been articulated here many times before.

  105. “I’ve been wanting to share this song since … a couple of weeks ago.”

Why? What did we do to offend you?

  106. Ritesh is shedding his doomer shell, I see.

Looks like the doom merchants are scrambling for answers with our recent form. No AIC, no Howard, in fact not a doomer in sight over at the ACLF Towers. Happy days.

I see Le Grove even nicked that little 13 out of 15 points tidbit from the comments section here, too. They definitely win the Bastard Villain award of 2009 by a county mile. The deranged twats.

  107. Country mile, obviously.

  108. Here’s a Christmas cracker joke.

Which three teams have swear words in their names?

    Arsenal, Scunthorpe and f*cking Spurs.

  109. Let’s finish this decade with a win. What was the 1st match we played in 2000 anyone?

    My best moment:

2005 FA cup final, because i choked on my meal and was so ecstatic i didn’t realise until i stopped celebrating. Then things got ugly

  110. Well, it’s not quite the right forum, PZ. I thought I’d seize my opportunity after NJN posted a track. Maybe I could tie the song in with the beginning of the ACN, even though it originated from the other side of the continent.

  111. I think Le Geofs derive their pleasure from complaining not from supporting the club. To them, there is nothing to talk about when the team wins, but when the team is not doing good..they excel in finding which player to blame.

  112. Awesome video, OneOfUs. A friend just got me on the blind couple from Mali, Amadou and Mariam. Beautiful stuff.

  113. A fellow gunner who’s a medic ( his love of AFC has him living overlooking the Stadium, and occassionly he’s an on call doctor at The Grove, a very cunning way to get pitchside!) has a theory that AW is pioneering a shift in football, a bit like tennis, where the athletic requirements and speed of the game are shifting and that younger faster athletes will dominate the game as opposed to the current generalisation of players peaking in their late twenties.
I disagree, football is a team game and very different to tennis, but it is an interesting hypothesis.

  114. nasirjonesnasri,

    @5.17 – hear hear

  115. Arshavin is yet to hit his peak. This will come when he’s 32.

Why, you may ask. Or you may not ask, but i’ll tell you anyway -

  116. One Of Us – thank you thank you. I shall hunt this track down and play it on my show tomorrow night. I’ve been playing a lot of African music and people are starting to come round. I also mention arsenal every week. And slag off one from international football/manu/chelski/spuds.

  117. I’ll definitely get onto them, NJN. I remember a few ten years ago Damon Albarn got rinsed for going to Mali to record with some of these guys. Ali Farka Touré (more since he died) and Tinariwen are pretty big now. So I guess he was onto something!

  118. …a few years ago…!

No problem, Steww. What show’s that? I heard a bit of the compilation this one was on and had to get it. There’s a whole load more, and it’s going to take weeks to get though it all.

  119. Damon Albarn did some stuff on the track “Sabali” that was in Pitchfork’s top 15 songs of the year. I highly recommend them. This one is one of my faves so far:

  120. Finsbury Parker.

I would subscribe to such a notion. I think what is happening at Arsenal and specifically the Wengerball style of play is a revolution. The revolution is moving us from the physically bruising “I don’t know how to play football so I’ll kick opponents and the ball and run” mindset to the sort of ‘intelligent’ fluid play that is driven by technique, pace and flare. The beauty of what Arsenal is working towards with Wengerball for me is as dramatic as watching the All Blacks in full flow – they’re ecstatic beyond belief when they play their rugby brand of Wengerball. Dan Carter is their Cesc Fabregas – the best in their game on the planet.

The thing about revolutions is that the commoners rarely understand what the visionary is up to and will almost certainly think the plot is lost. By the time they realise that Arsenal is leading the way in changing and evolving the game, and doing it in an affordable and responsible way, they’ll all be chasing Arsenal on and off the pitch.

Remember FP – when Wenger came to Arsenal in 1996, even our own players were like “who the fuck is he”. Who can honestly stand up and claim that Wenger has not already revolutionalized the English game with everything from diet and nutrition to training methods and total football and even to the way club finances are managed. And yet in 1996, everyone thought he was a joke too far from the board who appointed him.

  121. @One Of Us – I have found some on mail order, vinyl a little expensive but hey ho.
I do a show on a community radio station down in darkest Somerset . Wed 6 – 8pm http://www.somervalleyfm.co.uk/ if you like Cuban ska and German funk it’s a must! Also text in and get me talking about Arsenal, that is always a good idea.

  122. Actually, Flamini was a player who had an engine that was pure Merlin. It never stopped! He never complained! He played at positions and made the best of the situation such as his stint at left back. A team of Flamini type players would be no bad thing.

However, we may not be far from having a group of Flamini type players. All of them with strong engines and all of them with a multi dimensional quality which allows them to change positions on the field and not be out of position if you take my meaning. If the team is understood within the concept of players being capable at more than one position, there is less vulnerability to the squad. We are currently playing without our starting striker, left back, and centre midfield. Where is the suffering?

  123. Merlin engines are shit.

    But that’s my pointless opinion

  124. Is a shift really occurring in tennis?

Let’s look at the current open champions:

    2009
    French Open
    Men
    Roger Federer (28)
    Women
    Svetlana Kuznetsova (24)

    U.S. Open
    Men
    Juan Martín del Potro (21)
    Women
    Kim Clijsters (26)

    Australian Open
    Men
    Rafael Nadal (23)
    Women
    Serena Williams (28)

    Wimbledon
    Men
    Roger Federer (28)
    Women
    Serena Williams (28)

Only Nadal and del Potro are in their early twenties. The old-timers, Federer and Williams, with two titles apiece, are still dominating. In any case, Nadal, with his reliance on brute power, is more like the Chelsea of the tennis world. Federer undoubtedly corresponds to Arsenal: he has sufficient power, but the source of his superiority is technique. He rarely uses a coach, since he has nothing to learn. The only physical characteristic that is important in Wenger’s vision of football is fitness. Arsenal is the fittest team in the league, but not necessarily the fastest, and certainly not the strongest. It is interesting to remember that Federer is regarded as perhaps the fittest player in the men’s game. Such is the economy and elegance of his play that his fitness is rarely important; but in this year’s Wimbledon final, when the stronger Roddick played the best game of his career, Federer was able to come through largely because of superior fitness.

  125. That was great, NJN. I think I repeated it 5 times (one of my bad habits when listening to music)! I like it already.

Ha, that sounds amazing, Steww – The Stew Black show. You miss kick-off tomorrow night though. I can see how the platform can be abused.

LOL! The dude on right now said, “Any requests, just call me!” before spinning Call Me by Blondie. Pure cheese. Local radio is amazing!

Now he’s playing “Don’t leave me this way” for Becky, the manager at the local Halifax, because he wants a loan. Haha! I wonder if he needs a reason for every song he plays.

  126. Darius – good analogy with the All Blacks. They definitely focus on fitness and certainly have it over most teams, together with skill levels. Probably the coach with the highest winning % in any team sport is Gordon Tiejtens (sp) their Rugby 7′s coach – very innovative and always has his team at the highest possible fitness level. One reason there is so much emphasis on fitness levels pre-season in Austria.

It stands to reason. It is very difficult for a team to be “in your face”, chasing, harrying, charging in, defending for 90 mins. Hence the best technical and fit team can win it in the last 20 mins. This is the antidote to “anti football” that the likes of Allardyce have developed.
But, the plundits (plonkers/pundits) haven’t yet noticed and still get antsy when Arsenal have failed to negotiate the 10 behind the ball for the first half. Fans need to realise that it takes time to break down these tactics.

  127. One way around it would be to play a 15 minute song at the end of the time slot.

  128. anyone hear about van der sar’s wife? awful news, regardless what team he plays for. wouldn’t wish that on anyone

  129. I totally agree with that Darius,
there’s a whole article in there I guess.

Looking around at the improved fitness and standards that have made the league so much more competitive this season, well, we all know what the source for all these advancements is (which makes the attitudes of Allardyce, Oooozy & co all the more pathetic).
But still I think in a team game, that older experienced players will always have a role to play.
The case I used in my counter argument was the Argentina-Germany game in 06 where Argentina were winning, substituted Riquelme unnecessarily, and then lost the game. Can’t really explain it, but obviously taking off the oldest most experienced and iconic player in that case was a bad move. At the least it gave the German players a huge emotional and adrenaline boost.

Hope that doesn’t make me sound like Alan Shearer.

I think Gallas is the most interesting player for me this season. I honestly thought that, purely for the reasons mentioned above, that Gallas would have been let go over Toure.

But as we can see so far, Gallas is playing as well as he was last season, if not better, has been completely committed in every game yet avoided serious injury.

I thought that it wouldn’t be possible for AW build another 30 something defence with the faster game we see today, but Gallas is still there carrying a torch for all the old timers. : )

  130. Yes, I agree it is very sad news and i hope she gets better. Footballers are under immense stress and nobody deserves that

  131. PZ, I think you’re right, I think Gallas is a good example.
It’s an interesting topic, thanks for your replies Darius and PZ.

  132. This is interesting-the players are also good at moving the ball in such a fashion that it ends up in the back of the net, thus enabling the mitsubishi motors scoreboard to display 1 goal in the favour of Arsenal, but the scoreboards provided in other stadiums may differ, made by other electrical outfits

  133. That show looks grand, Steww. I’m going to listen for sure.

Sorry, I’m wasn’t knocking the station earlier. I haven’t been back in England for well over a year now, and Somer Valley just dealt me a heavy dose of nostalgia! Half my family is from Wiltshire. And Halifax down the high street might as well be Timbuktu right now!

  134. Rosicky will be back for West Ham

    woohooooooooo

  135. —————almunia——-
    –sagna–gallas–verma-traore—-
    ——song—-diaby–nasri—
    ——-walcott–arsavin–vela-
    —–

  136. Any news on the Cesc scan…

  137. wenger is still waiting for the news

  138. and so are we. tks.

  139. Sorry to disappoint you Nasir but here I am. Its great that we are up there at the turn of the year. We are in a great position but since 2004 the problem that we have had is that there have been a number of near misses: 2005 Prem, second (although a way behind), 2006 CL final, 13 mins away, 2007 Prem 4 points behind, last year semi in CL.

This team needs to go that one step further and win one of these competitions which like AW says could well open up the floodgates.

There seems to be greater resilience about the team this year and some players like Diaby, Denilson and Song have really grown in stature. Its a huge same about RvP but we have done well without him so far.

As usual, I fear injuries especally to Gallas or Vermaelen and its not clear if anyone can replace the brilliance of RvP over the whole season.

I would actually be very confident if we had another centre back and if RvP was fit. I am still positive though – unlike last year – but I always fear injuries ruining us in March.

  140. Arshavin will be able to go on until 35, because he pace isn’t one of his main assets, most of the goals he scores are poached eggs

  141. There you have it… Wenger likes Bellamy…but will not be signing him.

    Relief.

  142. zap,

Are you sure that pace is not one of Arshavins assets?´He is quicj just not lightning like Theo or Traore

  143. Alex think about it this way- If walcott wasn’t fast, would he be good enough? No- whereas Arshavin will probz go on for a long time due to the fact he can score goals just lounging around on the edge of the box, collecting the ball and smashing it in

  144. Will someone zap Zap?

  145. I want a Villa, Liverpool draw. It’s going to be an interesting game.

  146. nobody can zap Zap, Polizanio because zap is unzappable

  147. yep it should be a good match.

    cool, novasports is showing it

  148. Hey oneofus – that guy is so odd isn’t he? I shall sky plus the match and start watching when I get in (sky plus is magic you don’t need to wait for the recording to finish) or stay at the station and watch first half on a stream then rush home for second half. I probably break a lot of rules when on air as I often have the footy on a live stream and can’t resist a bit of biased commentary.

  149. This is stuck in moderation so I’ll try an asterisk in the northern team.

    Here’s a Christmas cracker joke.

Which three teams have swear words in their names?

    Arsenal, Sc*nthorpe and f*cking Spurs.

  150. How can Sc*nthorpe be moderated and Spurs pass untouched?

  151. bernard because the word cunt is in the middle of s’cunt’horpe

  152. bernard because the word c*nt is in the middle of s’c*nt’horpe

  153. Blimey – snowing in Birmingham then?

  154. well this is a crap game

  155. California Gooner

Finsburyparker, it seems to me that older players will definitely be more prominent in tournaments like the World Cup then they will in regular league play. The reason is simple: old legs can be motivated for a great run of 3 or 4 or 5 games, but not as easily for a season of 30 or 40 or 50. Hence Zidane, several years past his best, could put that run together and carry France to the finals in 2006.

  156. California Gooner

Just read Wenger’s praise of Diaby on the official Arsenal site. I am surprised to learn he is only 23. It seems like he’s been around forever!

    http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-diaby-has-grown-on-the-pitch

  157. PZ,

I follow and play tennis. I read your tennis post. Your analysis is interesting, but you forget one fundamental point. Federer wins because he is the best tennis player, not just because of fitness. He is a much better tennis player than Roddick, and edges Nadal on surfaces other than Clay. He was outpowered by Del Poltro at the U.S, and if he is never to win another grand slam, it will be because he will be outpowered. I hope it doesn’t happen.

  158. Are you taking revenge for the Heskey incident?

  159. Bolton 1-0 Hull

  160. Villa 0-0 Liverpool

  161. I am just discussing tennis PZ !!

Heskey is a great player by the way.

  162. True CaliGooner, that’s probably always been the case with older players and the World Cup.

  163. Poliziano..who gives a backhanded volleyed toss about tennis.

  164. Bolton 2-0 Hull

  165. One of the things I love about ACLF; we discuss Arsenal (natch) but can comfortably meander through other topics (music and tennis today). I for one am happy to see someone say how well the cricket is going. Or how shit Liverpool and Villa are.

  166. Liverpool brought then sold Robbie keane spending 10m+ on him. They also got Johnson for 17m.

    Arsenal brought Arshavin for 17m.

    See the difference?

  167. Hmmm. Well, just in case my earlier comment was not explicit enough, I of course agree that Federer is a much better tennis player than Roddick. I was only referring to a particular match. It has to be admitted that Roddick played an excellent game in the last Wimbledon final. It went to I know not how many games in the final set. Roddick eventually came to the point that he could offer no opposition on Federer’s serve, and so it was only a matter of time before Federer won. I thought Federer was rather cruel to beat Roddick. After all, Federer has so many grand slams already. Could he not spare one for such a couragous opponent?

  168. I think we can all agree that rugby is the most shit, unnapealing sport

  169. Don’t mind a bit of rugby. Fuck – Liverpool have won.

  170. A.Villa 0-1 Liverpool

what a gr8 goal by torres

  171. Assist for Warnock, who seems to have forgotten he no longer plays for Liverpool.

  172. steww, isn’t it good? It makes the gap from the top 3 and the 4th place more significant

  173. No, he couldn’t PZ. The winner takes it all.

  174. But yes… I felt sorry for Roddick. The guy is class.

  175. That is incredibly hard on Villa.

  176. bloody hell

    Bolton 2-2 Hull

  177. And Stephen Hunt, no less, with a quickfire double.

  178. Looks like we knocked the stuffing out of Villa and Liverpool were able to take advantage.

  179. I won’t be shedding any tears for Villa.

  180. Cesc was instrumental, but other played well too.

I thought Eudardo and Ash had shockers though.

    Need to try Theo upfront.

Find out why Cesc Fabregas is statistically the most in form player

  181. I meant players who’ve been unlucky with fitness have always been able to return for shorter tournaments, like Ronaldo. Not just ‘older’.

  182. Eudardo will find his form. Ash is doing great.

    Neither will i, poliziano.

That injury time equalizer remains in the memory, as does the 2-0 slapping

  183. Oh, I don’t care about Villa at all, but factually speaking, that goal was a heartbreaker.

  184. LUKAKU

Is he the one? He has little top level experience and he is 16/17. Such raw talent. If he is also reasonably intelligent then he is a signing for AW to make some time soon?

  185. Ted Harwood you look very determined in your picture, is that the same picture you use when looking for job interviews?

  186. Come on Arsenal!!!!

  187. I dont like Tennis…but i disagree Poliziano, i think Federer is better then Roddick.

  188. AresnalFC100: are you my mother in disguise? She always criticizes me for not smiling in photographs. Then my dad asks me why I’m scowling, and I say I’m not, that I just have a naturally frowny face…

  189. I’m not your mother

  190. I’m kidding mate sorry, that was me.

Forgive me for being severely bored.

  191. Incredible, we are 3rd with 2 games in hand.

PLease please please don’t blow it up tomorrow night

  192. He will be key for Spain to win the cup next year…

  193. Please can Arshavin cook some poached egg tomorrow night

  194. Lol, Zap.

Hopefully my naturally frowny face won’t come out while I watch the replay of the Pompey match tomorrow after my re-entry in Chicago…

    (not really worried).

    up the gunners.

  195. let’s hope so!

  196. The Liverpool, Villa game was awful. Both played hoofball and were knocking the crap out of each other. Warnock is a moron. We can thank him if Liverpool mount a resurgence.

Davydenko is my favorite tennis player. He’s about as tall as Arshavin and returns everything that’s thrown at him. He recently beat Federer in a masters tournament.

  197. Are you sure he is arshavin’s height?

  198. MI5 is crap. If they are spies why do they get caught for god’s sake

  199. The Invincibles are team of the decade and Thierry Henry is player of the decade for me.

  200. the problem is with ”decade,” it is from 2000-2010

but what abt 1995- 2005, also a decade- Bergkamp

  201. Well Zap if you go back to the start of time…the first decade started with year 1 not year 5 :)

But Bergkamp is right up there for me too.

  202. Berkamp is the best player to ever play in the Premiership this guy is the most technically gifted player I have ever seen. Tomorrow I might say Thierry is the best, its very close. I think Berkamp shades it for me purely on his vision and technical ability. His goal against Newcastle in 2002 summed it up. Genius.

  203. Tommy Vermaleen to score a goal tomorrow, it’s been a while. 2-0 Arsenal.

  204. I’d like to see Fran Merida get a runout against Pompey. He had a nice stretch against them last year.

  205. clichydoubledeuce

    the enigma

  206. Thanks for the vid. Those idiots who slated Abou as he returned from horrific injury will eat their words, he will be immense.
The same moronic comments are being made about EDS who will continue his return to form – class is permanent form is temporary.

  207. KANSAS. I Believe Fran Merida has not signed new contract ans can sign a pre contract with Atletico Madrid on January 1. I hope we dont lose him

  208. i’m a bit late

  209. aaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  210. rrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  211. ssssssssssssssssss
