Blinded In The Light

Sunderland 1 – 0 Arsenal

1 – 0 Bent (71)

A title challenge is built over 38 games, lost not in a poor November defeat but in the failure to attain consistency over the course of the season. One result as winter beckons is no determinant of what a nine-month outcome will be.

Arsene recently bemoaned the injuries sustained, citing them as a reason why his teams tend to stutter in this particular month. Before the trip to the Stadium of Light, he observed that the changes in the footballing calendar might help him to prepare his teams for the fixtures immediately after an international break. An extra day may indeed assist him but judging by this below par performance, he would be better served if there were an additional three days, the returning fixture being not in the Premier League but a European one instead.

Yet Wenger cannot point just to injuries for the defeat. History counted against them, 60% of away fixtures under Wenger following the November international break have been lost. For the most part at venues where victory would be expected. That does not matter as it was the performance yesterday which mattered. Not one player was exceptional; not one player was outstanding. One – Fabregas – had a good game whilst Song, Gallas and Vermaelen put in decent efforts. The remainder were simply average. On any other Saturday, that might be good enough to get the required result; yesterday it was not.

Changes were forced upon Arsene through injury. He made others through choice from the victory at Molineux. Traore replaced the injured Clichy and Gibbs; Eduardo shifted to the centre for van Persie’s absence. Ramsey retained his place with Diaby out, Rosicky replaced Arshavin and Nasri filled the gap left by Eduardo moving centrally. The number of changes proved too much of an impact on the attacking sextet’s fluidity, a point acknowledged by Arsene afterwards:

It is more worrying that we did not score. Going forward we lacked sharpness and desire to go beyond the defenders. We didn’t expose them with our pace.

The opening minutes did not give any indication of the flaccidity of performance that was to follow. Sagna hung a deep cross into the area that Fabregas did phenomenally well to not just keep in play but to execute a deft pass into the path of the onrushing Rosicky. The Czech international struck the ball well, avoiding Mensah’s charge but Fulop parried the ball well to safety. Before the quarter hour mark had passed, Traore cut inside and shot, the blocked effort fell invitingly to his captain but Fabregas failed to keep the ball down, clearing the Sunderland bar by a foot.

Whilst Arsenal dominated proceedings, Sunderland edged back into the game. Malbranque twice fired high and wide when he should have done better from the right side of the area. Yet Arsenal probed, outmanned in midfield but occasionally finding the route through. Perhaps the best chance fell to Eduardo. Song burst from midfield and the duo exchanged a sublime pair of one-two’s, the Croat shifted the ball inside his marker, evaded a challenge and lofted the ball over Fulop. Agonisingly, it dropped wide of the post and Song, whose run carried him towards the ball’s trajectory. That he was probably offside was a moot point as the effort was too strong for him to catch.

Before the interval, Ramsey and Fabregas wasted shooting opportunity through weakness of effort or accuracy. It was the Welshman’s last contribution as he made way for the disappointed Arshavin as the hour approached. The stalemate needed something sublime to break it; instead, Keystone Cop defending prevailed. Reid hoisted a deep corner that Bent could merely misguide to Campbell at the far post. The ball ricoheted back across the six yard area and Bent beat Almunia to the ball to bury the ball. Rosicky was half asleep at the far post, slow to react to the ball reaching Campbell, indicative of his natural attacking game, a defender perhaps would have been more alive to the chance. Yet the central danger point in the area should not have left unguarded, reaction times low to apparent danger.

Arshavin came close to restoring parity, smuggling the ball wide having chased Song’s cross to close to goal. Vermaelen could not capitalise from his captain’s cross prior to that whilst a couple of instances of pace saw cross flash across the Sunderland area with no-one in a position to capitalise. Vela was felled in the area by Campbell but surprisingly little was made of the incident by Arsenal. Playing to the whistle, they chased back before Traore intervened with a late challenge in the centre circle. Equally the Sunderland players did not over-react to that, perhaps aware of the youngster’s penchant for carrying a duster.

Comments this morning attributed to Andrey Arshavin have a familiar ring to them, old ones regurgitated perhaps. Wenger is apparently not going to rush into the January window for a striker, preferring to give Vela and Eduardo a run at proving their places worthwhile whilst his Dutch talisman is out. That will no doubt be seized upon by critics of Arsenal, re-iterating the belief that the squad needs serious strengthening. One performance cannot decide that. Wenger has observed that he is confident that ongoing talks with Gallas, Rosicky and Merida will result in new contracts being signed, these three taking more of his thoughts than new players.

Standard Liege offers the opportunity to put the train back on track before next weekend. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Adams the leader

A cold and rainy day in the North East and Arsenal outbattled by an inferior team.Where have we heard that before?
If it was a one off we could forget it but it has happened too many times over the last few years.
Too many players i only exempt Song and Cesc were not up for it
Both our full backs had poor games and Nasri and Rosicky had no influence on the game at all
Eduardo is a great finisher but will never be a player who can play the lone striker role.He hasnt got the Physical presence of RVP.
    Chelsea is a must win

  2. Sorry but we are 8 points behind, only. We have a game in hand. After which there will be a measly 72 points to play for. Time to get a grip and stop being manipulated by lazy, talentless agendadriven journalists and pundits.

  3. Jimmy the Gooner

YW you are right about most of our players yesterday they were average. To beat teams like Sunderland,Stoke,Boton etc have to beat them at there own game.Sometimes skill is not enough, just look at the France- Ireland game.
But we had no one in our team who could stand up to the likes of Cana.Rosicky and Nasri were just too lightweight for yesterdays game
The Sunderland goal was another sloopy goal conceded from a set peice.Do we ever practice defending them in training?

  4. Nothng has changed, why is everyone so surprised? Brittle away form, over reliance on 2-3 players and an inability to depend set pieces sums up the last 4 seasons.

Away form – Defeats to United & City, despite outplaying both, lucky comeback v Liege, even luckier win v Fulham, draw in Alkmaar, two-goal lead squandered v West Ham, a win at Wolves and now this at Sunderland.

3rd or 4th was always the best we could hope for and anyone who thought differently is ignoring 4 years of form.

  5. Jimmy the Gooner

Cannot agree with you Yogi about Song having a decent game.I was at the game and he was dominated by Cana(what a bargain at £5m)Only Cesc can tak any credit

The biggest worry was upfront.Eduardo as the single striker looked lost.I couldnt remember him touching the ball in the 2nd half before he was taken off.His best form as an Arsenal player was as a 2nd striker to Adebayor.

  6. Fuck off Bernie you tosser.

  7. Yesterday was always going to be a difficult match. Sunderland are a decent team with a good a manager. We often have problems after an international break and with a bit of luck either not losing a key member of the squad or having a home fixture might have made a difference. Everyone moaning and bitching won’t change anything, ManU lost away at Burnley and were very close to losing to Sunderland a few weeks ago. The two most important things at the moment are to get a result midweek (and avoid having to go Greece needing a win) and making sure we do not lose against Chelsea next week.

  8. Excellent review as ever YW.

Defeats are horrible but they happen. Why do people bring this brittle up north stuff up when we suffer what is an occasional defeat up there ?

Didn`t Chelsea lose at Wigan (& Villa – that`s half way up north).

Away games in the EPL are tough. There`s rarely a gimme. The side sent out yesterday looked a bit lightweight due to injuries but were just as likely to get the win as Sunderland.

As for defending from set plays, just look at how many goals are scored on any given weekend in the EPL. EVERY team lets them in.

    Roll on Tuesday

  9. Dont worry lets bury our heads in the sand and forget that yesterday happened. We will finish 3rd which is an improvement on last season. And that is all you can ask.And maybe we can win the CC.Keep the faith

  10. Jimmy the Gooner – Admittedly I watched the game on TV, but from what I saw, Song had a massive game battling away in midfield. He was in perpetual motion either going back to help in defense, breaking up plays in midfield and making frequent runs into the S/land box. That is not to deny that Cana had a good game. In fact our best players as a group was our central defenders; Gallas, Vermaelen and Song. The other units were average at best and average does not cut it.

  11. Hi, great article today. Like Wenger said it’s just another bad day in the office. As usual the doomers are all out, urging us to follow the widely accepted view of ‘spend big to win big’.

I feel that post-international lethargy is much to blame for our performance yesterday. Our boys are as good as any of the best on their day, and dare I say, better even. As Wenger said we probably did not have sufficient time to prepare for this game and playing with a different set of players up front may have diluted the understanding the midfield and wings have with the regular front three. There a few passes going astray as some of the players may have anticipated their teammates to be there when they were not.

I’m sure this will be rectified as the season progresses, given that we will have to rotate more to accommodate the rush of games in the next few months. Looking forward to the Standard Liege game, where it’ll be a chance for our current front three to get more game time together. Our home record has been marvellous this season and that will stand us in good stead for the next couple of games. Up the Gunners!

  12. Have we got anyone in our team who can put their foot in? Chelsea have Essien,Manure have Fletcher. But who do we have? Oh for the days of Vieira,Petit and Keown who would leave their calling card in the first 10 mins of a game.

Also last two goals in the prem conceded have been down to TV losing his man

  13. Who are all these people who never post here, yet suddenly appear when we lose?

YW, the reason the Arsenal players didn’t make more of the penalty incident is obvious. They know they will not get a penalty whether they appeal or not and once the referee has waved play on, they might as well focus on defending the ball. We got caught out like that against AZ at home.

  14. Can no one see the real reason! We cannot keep clean sheets! Our goalkeeper(s) are S**T. We need to spend in January on the Lyon shotstopper (sorry, can’t remember his name)

  15. @Muppet

You always know your views are spot on when people can’t counter with a proper argument and resort to childish insults.

We’ll probably beat Chelsea as we’re fine at home, but just as likely to drop points at Burnley next month.

Even Wenger seems to agree which given he is responsible for the issue is ridiculous he has done nothing about it. http://bit.ly/8wePtr

  16. If ever there was a game we would be vulnerable – away at Sunderland after an international break, which included two players having played extra time less than 72 hours earlier and an injury to our main striker – would be it.

If we had come away with 3 points, it would have given confidence to the squad and belief that we can challenge for the title.

If we had battled to a 0-0 draw, it would have shown we were mentally strong when circumstances are stacked against us.

But we lost. Not a surprise, but still disappointing. Not to say we can’t challenge, but it still leaves question marks as to whether the squad is strong enough, both in personnel and mindset.

  17. If you listen to Arsene’s comments after the match he was questioning some of our players commitment in yesterdays game. But you know they will be up for the Chelsea game as its live on TV

  18. Were shit again

  19. ReggieRon,

They better be up for it, yesterday was a joke, they deserved to be bitch slapped they were so shit.

ReggaeRon you agree with me, I know you do

  20. Actually, it’s my fault we lost. The game against Sunderland was the first one I didn’t watch from the beginning since months. And actually, Sunderlands goal came about a minute after I had tuned in. So yes, I am to blame. (and not our players.)

  21. Agree about lyon storeshopper ,who will solve our problem.

Its about time we had another David Dein in the fa so we can get easy home ties after the internationals and other favorable fixtures.

  22. TV is a great goalscorer but his defending can be god awfull sometimes.

Why the hell didnt he stay on his man?

  23. EvilFiek,

You idiot, dont ever do that again. Your lucky im not near you or I’d give you a jolly good spanking

  24. Right im off to kill myself.

  25. Some of us prefer to support the team and leave the management to the manager. Arsene rarely criticizes the team publicly because he knows the weak minded will leap on it and go to town. He will identify what worked and what didn’t work and will sort it out. Our job as supporters is to put our doubts aside and support the team in order to strengthen their belief and give them the best chance of winning. Focusing on the negative will not change anything but will only undermine our confidence in the team, which in turn will undermine their confidence. We saw it last season and we are in danger of repeating the same mistake rather than learning from it. Remember, we are the 12th man and we can either choose to help the team or to hinder them. I know what I choose.

  26. Well said Passenal

    I blame todays blame culture

  27. Truly is amusing the way doomers crawl from the woodwork when times are tough. Who are all these folks up in here talking a break from football manager the game.

Great review YW – we should have seen the light as they say.

  28. Oh no Darius, It was not amusing, it was shit

  29. great headline Yogi.

just waiting for these pills to kick in.

  30. Thomas. Perhaps what is shit is that some folks only crawl out of the caves to contribute negatively to discussions when we don’t win.

  31. TV must do alot more work on basic defending and stop poncing around trying to be the next Emile Heskey.

Leaving his man on two seperate occasions at a set-piece? What kind of twat does that?

  32. Passenal – I also noted how pointed were the criticisms by the manager. If I am an offensive midfielder and frontline player at the club I had better up my game especially those who were substituted.
BTW: Some bloggers (many of whom with an agenda) have written that AW only made the substitutions after the goal was scored. Arshavin was brought on around the 60 min mark and both Vela and Walcott were off the bench before the goal was scored at the 72nd minute. Gives us a pretty good idea of where he saw the weaknesses.

  33. Nasri, Rosicky and Eduardo are in the process of coming back from varying degrees of long term injury. No doubt their rustiness didn’t help yesterday. I can see why Arsene was upset because our attack is usually the strongest part of our game yet we failed to score. I wonder if he will stick with the same front line for Tuesday in order to give them a chance to iron out the kinks?

  34. I wonder if he’ll tell TV to pull his head out of his arse

  35. We can still win the title. Last season we would have dreamt of being 3rd with a game in hand, we just need a run of wins, which will come, to push us closer to the title.

    we have to beat chelsea

  36. Zaparodje,

So your saying if we win games, we might win the title?

    mmmm…….Interesting

  37. Yep i agree Passenal, we need to be more kinky!

  38. Watching yesterdays game reminded me of the Stoke game last season.A cold and windy day one team wanted it the other didnt.Half our players wearing roll necks and gloves. We play in England not Siberia.Run you bollox off for the club that will keep you warm

  39. who is this thomas twat?

Mate why dont you go and play with a carrot in the wind? It’s quite clear you have yoghurt for brains, and not the cultured type with good bacteria…the other type. Like a milky bar yoghurt.

    twat

  40. Gunner From Nigeria

One defeat in14 matches has suddenly made Arsenal a bad team in some people’s eyes.
I am not making excuses for the players but, Barca, Lyon, Bordeaux and Real all struggled yesterday so, the international break was a contributory factor in our defeat.
Arsenal moves with a flow, any disruption affects it.
The beauty is that, no more international breaks apart from Song and Eboue going to the African Cup Of Nations.
The North thing is a myth.

  41. When teams (like Sunderland and Man City) keeps things tight we struggle. We still seem so inexperienced (or naive) when faced with this challenge. Under that circumstance you need to do one thing and one thing ONLY: dont concede a soft goal. And its BS when people say we ‘switch off’ defensively. HOW is that even possible? How can you lose concentration when its 70th min and 0-0? 3/4-0 up I can understand but 0-0??? We make defensive mistakes at times but our biggest problem is the lack of leadership on the pitch. No one cracks the whip when players aren’t doing what they should.

  42. deano,

Silence, little boy. Listen to me and you might learn something.

TV needs to be taken beack to school to learn to defend. Who leaves there man in the box?

  43. think outside the box thomas,

    outside the box.

  44. Deano, dont be a little boy.

We play shit up north, we need to issue our players with gloves and thick tights

  45. Thomas ,
All goals are result of some kind of mistake from the players who conceded the goal , unless you are Xabi Alonso.

  46. Big AL I’m sorry I don’t buy into this nonsense the pundits give out that our players somehow are softies grew up in the bahamas sipping from a coconut shell by the pool. Its utter rubbish Rosicky Arshavin, Vermalaen and others grew up in cold countries with extreme weather conditions by the way it wasn’t cold in sunderlnad. and our best player was Song an African. we made a lot of changes yesterday, the forward players Rosicky Nasri, Arshavin coming back from very long term injuries it is understandable they will not be able to compete physically my only criticism would be sometimes we need sacrifice the beautiful football and go ugly route 1 Wenger is a proud man and he doesn’t want to resort to that. Believe it or not 2 season ago we played ugly against Everton and we hammered them and who led the line for us that day? Eduardo. He will come good trust me. Have a look 1:40 min

  47. Fuck off thomas, do you think you are being clever? or funny? I don’t care which, sod off back to the chelsea blogs

  48. tommy dont be an old disgruntled moanykins.

wee’ll smash the other northern teams in, you’ll see if, god willing, you make it to your 93rd.

    Bless ya grandad.

  49. correction “the forward players Rosicky Nasri, Edurdo( Not Arshavin) coming back from very long term injuries “

  50. zaparodje,

I’m really interested on your theory about winning games to win the league.

Tell me, how would this work exactly?

  51. dipshit,

I’m talking about a run of games, like a solid month or two of consistent wins.

  52. zaparodje,

You mean like, if we like, won more games then the other teams?

  53. something like that thomas.

Theres also this theory that if we like, support, like, our team, like, it might, like spread some, like, possitivity, like, which maybe like like benaficial likey likey.

The glass is always half empty with you foges.

  54. Deano, I shouldnt be talking to you, wheres your mum?

  55. Sorry, Thomas is I, James.

I had a couple of hours to kill.

Im mixed up in the head and for that im sorry

  56. Sorry, Thomas is I, James.

I had a couple of hours to kill.

Im mixed up in the head and for that im very sorry

  57. Sorry, Thomas is I, James.

I had a couple of hours to kill.

Im mixed up in the head and for that im truly sorry

  58. 0-0 at the reebok, not that it matters. i hope the spuds lose, who are they playing? Thomas, maybe you will be able to tell me

  59. why? are you not alowed to talk to children thomas? What have you done?

  60. Thanx for that vid 1lc the boy was starved for service yesterday but the the soul still burns..

    Come On!!

  61. I think thomas’s computer time at nursery is over

  62. Thomas is I, James.

Sorry I was bored and am a moron

  63. The Master shall return

  64. Am I allowed to speak now?

  65. Awesome. The flick at 3 minutes is gorgeous.

Alan Curbishley is a daft, daft character indeed. Asked whether he thought Tottenham Hotspur were a top 4 side he says, “Well, I think so…”

    You what?

    Come on you Latics.

  66. hahaha stupid gooner fans…..always cussing each other hahaha

  67. Tough luck yesterday. Difficult game against a decent Sunderland team. Wind, rain, tiredness from international games…Sunderland is a fucking long way to travel two days after returning from tough internationals, especially without RvP and Kieran. Just a set back we will still win the EPL by a country mile. Victory against Chelski next weekend will have us back on track.

    ….Arsenal….

  68. hahahaha. hahahaha i’d like to see what job you get when you grow up

  69. even if we do lose next sat, it’s not over, we can still win it

  70. arsenal 4 life.

  71. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Check out this gem from the Le Grove comments section:

20 million AND Senderos for Cana and ANTON FERDINAND (who didn’t even play yesterday and is absolutely awful)! The idea being that would solve our mythical CDM and CB problem. When called out he says Ferdinand would be a replacement for Senderos, not Gallas or TV.

Shrewd piece of business that. This illustrious club deserves better supporters than that. Talk about mind numbing ignorance.

  72. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Who didn’t play until the last five minutes or so I should say.

  73. What a sad showing from some of our ‘supporters’ after the first defeat in, oh, so long.

What a pathetic life they must lead. Just imagine, losing a football match! Supporting a team like Arsenal, with it’s history and a Roll of Honour, the equal of any and superior to all but a very few, requires a bit of humility and intelligence.

It is a privilege available only to a minority, Most fans must spend their lives dedicated to the Watfords and Exeters of this world with only the odd cup run or promotion campaign to relieve the humdrum dedication of their support. They shame you.

No team wins every match. For that we should all be thankful. How boring the striving for success would otherwise be.

Thick and thin, people, thick and thin. Compared to the vast majority we have had a lot more of the former than the latter. Those who do not appreciate that, and the team that we have, are just thick.

    We are The Arsenal.

  74. Nasir Jones-Nasri

    Bang on as usual, consolsbob.

  75. fukin yids.

  76. Bravo, Consolsbob.

To be honest, when I scanned through the comments from this morning I thought all those bitter characters were the same person. Whether or not that person was a manic depressive or someone on a wind up – I couldn’t really care less.

Interestingly you’ve picked two clubs close to my heart, Watford who I used to go and watch with my Dad, and Exeter who I watched for a while when I studied down there. Slightly uncanny.

  77. Almost spooky Limpar. Until you remember that Paddy and Bertie had a role at the former and Exeter is ‘up the road’ from my geographically nearest team ,Plymouth Argyle.

Plymouth is the City is which my Arsenal supporting father met my mother whilst serving as a Royal Marine before the Second World War. It is also the team that, apart from Arsenal, I have watched the most.

  78. the spuds scored 9.

that just highlights the fact that anything can happen in football no matter how ridiculous it seems.

    Thats why we love it.

  79. and bang on consolsbob.

I feel honoured just to be watching the gunners play and to have that emotional attatchment.

Its all about the journey, without it trophies meen nothing.

  80. did Wigan field their under 5′s????

  81. WAFC Take your daughter to work day???????

  82. 1-0 defeat at Sunderland, the Spuds hit 9.I have had better weekends

Anyone know the last time we hit 9? was it in the 30′s

  83. Absolutely, deano.

The struggle makes winning all the sweeter.

  84. very well said, i don’t need trophies. I need Arsenal. Trophies will come, anyone who thinks otherwise. Go on Arsenal.com and look at how many fixtures are left. last season we had drawn 1, and lost 5. We have lost only 3, drawing once and are 3rd, and i believe we have more experience which converts into momentum that will carry us throughout the season. But the thing is, we can bounce back. In fact, when it comes to bouncing back we are the best. Look at last season.

  85. whaa 9.. Didn’t Sven get fired after conceding 8 with shitteh..

  86. ..and who the hell cares what the spuds do?

  87. Goodbye Martinez. He should’ve stayed at swansea i don’t think he’s ready.

Big Al, we lost against a very good team who had fight and spirit, on a hangover from various locations across europe. The spuds played at home against Wigan, half of whom were asleep. I mean literally asleep, like dreaming of a top 10 finish asleep

  88. sorry, we were the ones on a hangover not them

  89. Apparantly the dvd of the spuds 9-1 win will already be in the shops tommorow, entitled when did Arsenal score 9.

  90. zaparodje

Sunderland are not a very good team.Name me one of their players who would get in our Carling cup team
They beat us because we didnt turn up.Simples

  91. Dear oh dear oh dear, Big Al….’simples’?

  92. Shove it up your arse, James, you silly yid cunt. We battered you 3-0.

  93. Moderated. In fairness, entirely with justification.

  94. A shame that Big Al’s name is being taken in vain by a prat.

Just for the record, any team that scores 9, should score 10. Piss poor effort by the spuds. No sense of occasion.

  95. ..and anybody who quotes a piss poor advert selling car insurance in an attempt to be funny is a very sad individual.

  96. big al or whoever the hell you are.

  97. sorry i didn’t get to finish that. i was going to say ‘piss off’ so imagine that being in the comment above

  98. The spuds score 9 goals in one game and have still scored four less than Arsenal ….and Arsenal have a game in hand. Back to normal on Tuesday….and Sunday.

  99. What’s happened to Wigan ? Martinez is a cool guy; he’s not Tango.
But, hopefully, Chavs and spuds, the old saw of ‘pride before a fall’ will be your fate.

james/thomas… you really are a pain ~ you can get help on the NHS.. until then; please stay far far away. Merci!

  100. TV is shit now, what happened to him?

  101. TV is excellent, really looking forward to seeing him play again on Tuesday.

  102. I hope for William’s sake that France get rid of Domenech soon. It must be tough turning out for a side managed by him. Hopefully he is getting some much needed rest today.

  103. Normal back four on Tuesday.

  104. He’s been shit the last couple of games. He cost us three points yesterdat because he didnt stay on his man. He needs to pull his head out of his arse

  105. What do you think then, Chase? Sell him?

  106. I think we should kick the shit out of him

  107. We? Why don’t you do it on your own, Chase?

  108. Cos I’ll pay you and you need the money

  109. It would give me great pleasure to kick the fucking shit out of you, Chase. But I don’t need to do I…it comes out all by itself.

  110. Actually I don’t need money, Chase.

  111. You do Frank, you live in a skip, I’ve seen you

  112. No you haven’t, Chase. What you doing hanging around skips, Chase?

  113. I agree with Frank

  114. I have Frank, I can see you in the skip right now, on my road. I’ll be down in a minute with some bread for you, and some more rum

  115. I agree with Passenal

  116. Any coincidence that Wigan have been shipping goals and to a lesser extent, Arsenal because of the way they play? Essentially the Catalan 4-3-3, Barcelona are having problems scoring at some moments because they are too good at keeping the ball and pushing teams back. The key defensive difference is they squeeze play very much and hence deny space.

Wigan and even Arsenal are not expected to keep the ball as well and the former have been punished comprehensively by Spurs for leaving way too much space. Good players but needs a change in system, Martinez.

  117. Keep watching the skip, Chase. Watch very closely…..and be very careful.

  118. Are you suggesting that because we narrowly lost to Sunderland away after a really horrible international break that we should change our system, Brain?

  119. Frank I’ve thrown your bread next to the skip, i promise not to piss on you while your sleeping tonight ok

  120. You can piss in the skip as usual, Chase. I am not there. Go on flop your tiny little thing over the edge and give it a squirt.

  121. You are there Frank, you have no job, no money, and no hair

  122. I don’t think it was our system that caused that defeat to Sunderland. Wigan however, do not have the quality of players to successfully execute that system especially away from home. They should have played to their strengths instead of making the spuds look good by leaking so many goals. After all, this is the same team that beat chelski at home. But is does show that anyone can beat anyone if they are not 100% focused.

  123. It was TV’S fault, he’s shit now

  124. James you silly yid cunny, shouldn’t you be down the Lane with your scrofulous mum and dad? I hear she’s putting on a street party. Get out there and celebrate, don’t be shy – it’s your big day.

  125. Chase is James, I think. James is a tosser.

I agree Passenal. A tired performance from players not all fully at ease with the system that we have been playing.

Arsene will put that right. The players must be furious with themselves.

  126. Seems like James is bored again.

  127. seems like j.ames is bored again.

  128. James

  129. Bloody hell Sunderland beat our ladies team also.

  130. Oh I see, saying ‘J.ames’ gets you moderated. I thought it was because I used the words, ‘yid’, ‘cunt’, ‘scrofulous’ and ‘mum’ in the same sentence. This makes much more sense. Hard but fair, Yogi.

  131. oh.

  132. I agree with Passenal

  133. If you even mention J*mes now, you get moderated.

  134. Ah, now that I’ve figured that one out I will say again.

    Chase is J*mes, I think. J*mes is a tosser.

I agree Passenal. A tired performance from players not all fully at ease with the system that we have been playing.

Arsene will put that right. The players must be furious with themselves.

  135. so chase is james who is thomas. What a c*nt. grow up and just pick stick and be a prick with one of them names.

  136. so chase is j*mes who is thomas.what a c*nt. just pick stick and be a prick with one of them names.

  137. ha ha , you was right bob.

  138. Thank you Wigan for giving the scum cheap goals and now we have to put up with their crap talk and how they are going to overtake us and also with the title. Really disappointed, the scum will come out from their hiding places to boast. But in Reality its Wigan that were shocking.

  139. Where are the Kirkland lovers? Mind you, he did at least chip in with a goal. Oh, hold on…

  140. Sorry, my previous comment may have suggested we need a change in system. I meant Wigan who are having trouble playing the same way as Barcelona/Arsenal.

It takes much talent to play it properly as defending must squeeze space which in itself is difficult as attacking means stretching play and creating angles.

  141. too many red lights for us yesterday.

  142. just watch the highlights again and feel much better.

We were sub-par yesterday and yet still produced moments of magic that other teams can only dream of.

Its back on. We will learn from this. It may even end up being more useful than a win in the long run.

  143. So are we going to see Alex the Ice Cream van driver on here?

He normally offers a comment in defeat.

  144. I think Its time to unleash Walcott upfront on Chelsea, John Terry will have a nightmare trying to keep up with his pace. Give it a go Mr Wenger.

  145. Good idea 1 loose cannon Cesc, Denilson and Diaby were in the midfield that ran rings around chelski for 2/3rds of that match. They’re all older and wiser now and have some unfinished business to attend to.

  146. consols

If you ignore the obnoxious little prick, you wouldn’t find moderation an issue! I’m sure that he would soon tire of talking to himself although I’d guess he’s been playing with himself for years so he may not tire so quickly…

    YW

  147. Wow. It must be so hard to be a doomer. Coming up with the same lame pessimistic twaddle about ”lack of english grit”, ”its grim up north”…. Keep your heads up your arses and continue to fail to see whats really happening. ”No one to stick the boot in”? ”TV is shit”?WTF!!! What TV/streams have you been watching. Get HD you will never miss a trickBest thing I ever did.. When we win the title please stay on the same side off the fence and keep saying” we told you so”. Doomers will only make us stronger.

  148. This is how the season will End up like:

    Chelsea to win the league.

    manu to finish second

    arsenal to finish Third.

    mancity to finsh Fourh.

And next week Chelsea will beat us by 3 goals to one.And that will be bye bye premiere league for us.

  149. Does anyone think s/he can predict in what month we’ll finally have a penalty given for us this season?

    I say, April.

  150. I encourage anyone with video editing skills to create a video (for Youtube) of the about 9 clear penalties we’ve been denied this season.

    It’s getting really heavy.

  151. Thats the spirit Gooner2

  152. Next Sunday Ole. John Terry chops down Walcott.

  153. interesting stats here (for all stats lovers): we and man city are the only teams who haven’t been awarded a penalty yet.

    http://sg.sports.yahoo.com/football/premier-league/statistics/

  154. O/G – We all know the score. A defender will literally have to chop a foot off our forwards for us to get a penalty. Wenger did not even complain. He pointedly said we were at fault for our defeat. He knows, the players know; it is our job to outplay our opponents and put the ball in the back of the net. We will get no call from the refs.
No wonder the “Respect” campaign has withered to an ignominious death. RIP – Fairness and decency by English refs.

  155. Some bloggers are beginning to expose the referees; it is “one rule for Arsenal and one for everyone else.”
    http://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/agenda-out-as-its-one-rule-for-arsenal-and-one-for-everyone-else?

BTW: Part of the reason why the refs continue to get away with this blatant partiality and injustice is the lily-livered attitude of many Arsenal supporters/bloggers to the Eduardo incident. Initially they may have been in doubt about whether Eduardo dived or not. But they have no excuse once the club rallied behind the player and provided video evidence that exonerated Eduardo.

Interestingly it was from footage that the media conveniently ignored as they slanted the evidence to fulfill the baying for blood by the Celtic supporters and the myriad xenophobes who want to portray “johnny foreigner” as the sneaky diving cheat contrary to what happens every weekend on an English football field.

As many on this blog has pointed out, Eduardo had a right to go down when Boruc recklessly dived towards him. Intent was there and the video shows he made contact . The rules say penalty. Yet many of our supporters take this moralizing tone which suggest that Eduardo was wrong to go down. We are now paying the price for such a wobbly, spineless support for our player.

  156. Any coincidence that Arsenal, Wigan and Burnley are the only 3 teams not a receive a red card this season?

  157. Ole

So we didnt get a penalty v Celtic did we.

  158. Disappointed we didnt win on Saturday but life still goes on.Hopefully tomorrow restarts our winning ways again.

  159. Does any one really think we will get penalties after the Eduardo incident?Referee’s will always have that in the back of their mind.

There can be no excuse for the shoddy performance on saturday though.

Against Chelski AA has to play alongside Eduardo or else Terry will have an easy afternoon

  160. Big Al he means since after the whole Edwardo debacle. I can count atleast 3 instances we should have got penalties.

  161. BentleyTheFlyingSpur

I agree with my mates chase, thomas, james and gooner2. U lot need to put some fire in ur bellies and arses. Look, i think james, thomas, chase and gooner2 will agree that our 9-1 goal fest is due to THE FACT that spurs do not have a soft underbelly. U fix that soft underbelly and u will be champions.

  162. Spot on Shotta. I’m sick of reading posts by alleged Arsenal supporting bloggers still saying Eduardo dived when he was completely exonerated. The referee saw the contact from Boruc’s leg, the club provided that evidence to the UEFA panel and the ban that never should have been given was overturned. Yet, they are still questioning based on selective video footage provided by the media which had an agenda to push? It beggars belief!

  163. Big Al,

You missed my point. Since Celtic we’ve had 9 (by my count) penalties not given.

Obviously punishment for what’s seen as Eduardo’s dive that won us the penalty in the Celtic game.

Obviously we have a problem here.

    Fistlady,

I can count more than 3:

    1. Fletcher on Arshavin against Man poo
    2. Barry’s handball against Money City
    3. Foul on Gallas against Blackburn
    4. Foul on Vela away to AZ
    5. Foul on Eboue(?) away to West Ham
    6. Foul on RVP away to West Ham
    7. Foul on Vela away to Sunderland
    8. Did I miss any?

  164. All I want for Christmas:

Eduardo to get his clinical edge back.

  165. I forgot the clear penalty on Eduardo against Wolves after he nutmegged the defender.

  166. Ole the clear cuts for me were No.1,4&7.

  167. I think they were all clear penalties.

  168. Well..to atleast get none in 9 shows some prejudice.

  169. I hate to keep pounding this point. Maybe some one will finally listen to me. The Gunners need a striker who can score. I cat who can find the back of the net blindfolded and tied to a chair. This is the problem in a nutshell. Van Persie masked the problem now with him gone from for 4-6 weeks this problem is fully exposed. The Gunners had their chances. Nothing to show for it. This problem reared it’s ugly head against Man U and Liverpool. Trust me on this. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  170. BobbyG, When agaisnt Liverpool? i dont remember us having played them?FFsake its not like Van P scored all 36goals.

  171. Gibbs is in the squad for Liege!

  172. our record against top half team is poor this season .We only won one against them and it was spuds. Should change that against kgb.

  173. spuds are and will never be a top half team, santino. I don’t care where they are in any table.

bunch of tossers on here today. laughable, really, but I guess they only come out like fungus after a bit of rain.

I was impressed by Traore on Saturday. He looked much bigger than I remember too. He must have spent some time in the weight room.

  174. I discovered this blog a few mths back and read it daily now. Props to YW on a well done blog consistently. The comments are usually just as good and i always read down to the end. Those ‘doomers’ only come out as things go bad and are looking for attention. Please ignore them!!

  175. Arsenal just had a bad day.

  176. First step to modern politics
