Stone Cold Friday: Exposing The Myth of Arsenal’s Soft Underbelly

A robust little opener, the first in a regular Friday column from Darius of Stone Cold Arsenal.

Déjà vu is a feeling that taunts Arsenal fans during this spell of every season. Whether it’s the creeping cold, wet and windy nights that we’re perceived not to be able to handle, or the increasing collection of injured players hanging outside Colin Lewin’s physio room at London Colney – this period of the season during the last 4 years has brought a feeling of “Oh, not again”.

Since our last trophy, the pundit and hack establishment has associated Arsenal with ’soft under-bellies’. There is an expectation on their part that every season, Arsenal will fold and fade away into the dark, cold nights of northern winters. Arsenal is commonly seen as an irrelevance tagged with a big ’NEARLY THERE’ symbol by those who promote sensationalism in the media. But is this accusation about softness levelled against Arsenal a fair one?

After our FA Cup win in 2005, the club has changed considerably. My sense has been that the expectations that we would follow the achievements of the ’Invincibles’ squad were always an unreasonable one. The footballing landscape changed with Roman Abramovich declaring war on the reasonable convention that suggested living within your means is still an honourable thing to do.

Secondly, the imminent move to Ashburton Grove dictated that Arsenal must take a different approach, build a young competitive squad that challenged for trophies whilst we are shackled with financial commitments related to our move.

The courage of Arsenal to follow a vision that secured our future amongst the elite clubs was totally lost on the establishment, and unfortunately, many fickle, glory-hunting Arsenal fans who wouldn’t understand patience if it slapped them in the face. This lack of understanding of Arsenal’s vision and long term objectives, as well as refusing to acknowledge the opportunity cost of such an ambitious strategy, has led to the myth of our perceived weakness.

Don’t get me wrong, the last 4 years have been difficult and disappointing in part but it would be equally unfair not to acknowledge the mileage that this team has travelled in that period. The disappointments we’ve had have been a necessary cost of the youth development strategy and an invaluable lesson to the current team about what it takes to be champions.

Ten men were 18 minutes from becoming European champions with the best defensive record in Europe in 2006. In 2007 mental strength was put to the ultimate test after we capitulated following the sad events at St. Andrews in February last year. Some cite Eduardo’s injury as the point at which things started to go wrong for us, but I would suggest that Rosicky’s injury a month earlier was also a very significant turning point. We missed Little Mozart badly.

Last season, we progressed in the cup competitions, giving way at the semi-final stage. Many people under-estimated how difficult it would be last season to cope with losing 75% of a midfield that was successful the previous season; Hleb and Flamini went to pastures new and Rosicky became Lewin’s new best friend in the treatment room.

While all the invaluable ‘growing up’ was happening, the simpletons decided to settle for that ’Arsenal can’t hack it’ mantra that normally accompanies the definition of soft underbellies. It’s no surprise that as this young team emerges from obscurity into inevitable super stardom and eventual domination of football, many of these hacks, pundits and fickle fans find it difficult to come out of their comfort zone and take note of what has been happening.

The ’Arsenal will drop off as usual’ sentiments, coupled with the hyperbole and perceived threat that disaster and a hostile takeover are looming if we don’t win a trophy, seems to be an easier stance to take. Far easier than trying to understand the virtue of what Arsenal has been developing and why keeping true to this is a sure banker for success.

This year, despite the customary set-backs, only a fool would argue that Arsenal is not intent on winning a trophy. Not only are we playing the best football in Europe, the notion that we have a soft underbelly holds no water. Any examination of statistics of any manner will illustrate that we’re mixing it up there with the best. Many will still attempt to point out that we concede goals, but my belief is that negativity about a leak in our defence is a red herring convenient for those who have no idea how to cope with the notion that this young Arsenal team is actually coming to fruition.

Of course there’s room for improvement. It would be naive and arrogant to suggest otherwise and the sign of any great team is one that seeks constant improvement. But equally, it’s totally naive and arrogant to suggest that Arsenal is an irrelevance particularly if your only argument is based on ’soft underbelly’.

The experience that this team has gained by playing together, for the most part, in the last 3 years, the maturity they’ve achieved and their continued stellar performances on the pitch all make it worth the wait. It’s the sort of experience, team spirit and ethic, and camaraderie that Abramovich or the Sheikhs of Abu Dhabi couldn’t buy with all the tea in China. In my view, being wrongly perceived as weak is a cost worth paying for success in decades to come.

This weekend, another opportunity to dispel any myths about Arsenal’s intent for greatness is at hand. We have 3 points to collect at the Stadium of Light, a tricky fixture for us in the past. It’s a difficult away game after an interlull, and in past seasons, it’s the sort of game that would make us nervous. The boys have ruthlessly dispatched teams that in previous seasons were a challenge, and Sunderland is a team to be respected, but not feared.

I would suggest that this Arsenal team has no intention of showing anybody anything soft this weekend.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Nice piece DS.

The hacks are now jostling for position after they ALL wrote us off at the beginning of the season.

If this squad stays together (and fit) the future is surely red and white.

  2. PS

Can anyone organise a hack-a-thon for our friend Piles the dumb shite.

  3. Well said! Arsenal respect any teams they meet but that’s all! Arsenal do not fear them. Go Arsenal to the Stadium of Light and get the three points!

  4. Fantastic stuff mate

  5. eins, zwei, drei, to me

  6. Ah well, g’nite all fellow gooners.

  7. wow, didn’t take cana long to collect his 5 yellows. he is out for saturday. our lads can sleep a bit easier.

  8. shame that we missed out. what a signing!

  9. Yeah, well said Darius,if as I’m sure you have, you talk to any true Gooner then you are just relating what is being said and felt in the heart with all us true gooners, and what we all saw 4/5 years ago…is finally bearing fruits, its been hard playing this game of belieth and patience though and suffering MUFC/CFC glory….It’s our turn now!!!

  10. Darius as always “doing the right thing”

Neglected to mention we were missing our most influential player for 4 months, adding to that 75% but it was all for good reason as Deni Nas ect wouldn’t be the players and have the steel they do now..

Good to hear Cana and Cattarmole are out but our players will still have to tread safely as Sunderland will have other potential leg breakers to replace them..

  11. good article and my sentiments exactly…….fuck dumb ass Myles & his neersayers!

  12. Myles is not a true gooner. So whatever he says, its coming from a gloryhunter’s point of view who wants trophies at whatever cost
Be it if it destroys our club

4 years without a trophy is nothing to me
Id rather that than see my club going bust, struggling in the 3rd division

  13. rubbish complete and utter crap write up.

  14. Palmer is NOT a Gooner, he has said it enough times now.

    Anyway, fuck that irrelevant twat.

    He is an intelligent take on the Henry thang, from an ex-Irish player, Kenny Cunningham;

Cunningham said he could have been castigated “a thousand times” in his career if the parameters being used to vilify Henry were applied universally.

What’s more, the Dubliner reckoned that players understood the concept of getting away with what you can and accepted it.

Speaking on Newstalk yesterday, a “devastated” Cunningham rubbished suggestions Giovanni Trapattoni’s men might get a replay.

“No chance. I don’t even think it’s a question of if Thierry Henry admitted that he deliberately handled the ball or not. It doesn’t really matter. You can call it cheating or whatever. If that’s cheating, I’ve been guilty of cheating about a thousand times during my career.

“Every time I block off a forward’s run deliberately, every time I pull an opponent’s jersey deliberately in and around the penalty box; that could be construed as cheating. It’s part of the game, it’s understood by the players and it’s accepted.’’

  15. spit;

    Whats up with you fella?

  16. Thank you sir for this posting.
Clear ideas and tons of common sense.
Too bad that common sense it’s such a rarity these days in many so called arsenal fans.
The truth is that is a pride to support a club that sets the standard for what is a beautiful game.
And I bet my life that there are thousands and thousands of really hardcore and true fans of any other team in the EPL that wish their team would play like us. I doubt they want to be in Champions league or play semi finals or be runner-ups .
They just want their team to play like us. Everything else follows…
They understand more than our oh-so-vocal Arsenal airhead fans.
There will be may years of Arsenal domination to come, and yes…patience is a virtue.

  17. This is a first. A friday post this early in the morning.I like it.

Glad that Denilson,Vela, Traore and Fabianski are back, Theo and wilshire arent that far behind. Roll on Saturday.

  18. This side looks great at times and dismal at others, I think it’s still a case of ‘soft mentally’, to be fair there’s times when the team just switches off.

  19. A good read. The only comment I’d make is that Chelsea have in fact built up a good team ethic – achieved through a fairly consistent squad, all of a similar age.

Chelski’s issue is how to update the squad as they are reaching their peak, whereas Arsenal are on the up up up

  20. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Darius, you’re a far better writer than most of us here in the thread, but methinks your writing gets mired in bringing down the elaborate anti-Arsenal media conspiracy that everyone is so obsessed with.

I agree that we look mighty, might impressive these days but your well-written prose has the tiniest whiff of propaganda, or a the very least, preaching to the choir. Not much tactical analysis, but plenty of colourful statements such as “This weekend, another opportunity to dispel any myths about Arsenal’s intent for greatness is at hand.”

Might get crucified for this but you should know this IS a well written piece and I appreciate your positive attitude, the only difference between yourself and YW being he seems to cast a less political eye over the happenings at our club.

Love the early morning post, love having different opinions up on the blog. Keep it up, everyone.

  21. Dennilson is B.A.C.K.

    Now we are talking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Spit yo game..You are on the wrong blog.Shut the F**kup!!

  23. Bergkamp Ghoulfest.

Thanks for your insightful comments and I’m glad to take them on board.

I’m not averse to doing tactical or other perspective articles. Time and place for each of them I guess. It’s also OK to have and express an opinion about what I feel is not OK. Anti-Arsenalism for me is one of those subjects, but not the only one.

I would hope that by expressing your views, and others having the opportunity to express their’s, we will all have a richer debate. I enjoy this blog because everyone – including BobbyGee has an opinion, and we express them openly.

  24. Got to run for work now, but does anyone know in how many games we have actually been behind this season?

Liege and the two manc games off the memory, but have the rest of our goals all come when leading?

  25. Hollis we were actually leading in the manc game.we came from behind in Blackburns game twice, and the other two you mentioned. the rest we scored first but we havent had a goal the whole season in the 1st 15min of play.

  26. @ ‘Sink

Cattermole is out but Cana should play he missed their last game through suspension.

Great post Darius, like Tiger said Chelsea has had a pretty stable team which puts them in great shape for the season.

In making preseason predictions most hacks/pundits give more weight to past performances than scope for improvement, which i why they wrote of Arsenal.

It wasn’t difficult to see that of all the teams Arsenal had the most room for organic improvement, given the age of the team and the fact that they’ve been together long enough to form a deep understanding of each other.

Add into the mix, experience gained from past disappointments and triumphs, a sprinkling of zest(Arshavin), a return of key ingredients (Rosicky and Eduardo), trimming off extra fat (Kolo), ditching the unnecessary garnish (Ade), and voila! you have a recipe for success.

    Ok I need breakfast now.

  27. If the news is correct, there’ll be no Cattermole, K.Jones or Cana. Logic dictates that if we have 24 quality players and are missing about one third of them and Sunderland have 9 decent players and are missing one third of them of them, we have a quality advantage to choose from of 16 vs 6.

On paper at least, we should cruise. They are without three of their most influential players, and all in key positions.
It could be a long day for Sunderland…

  28. Excellent article, Darius. Pity a few of the 50 cent blogging brigade don’t understand that newspapers have a business model built on selling today, hence the drivel that they produce, whereas football clubs in general and Arsenal in particular need to think rather longer term.

  29. Cana was suspended for their game against the spuds. He’ll play against us.

Time to ignore Myles. I doubt he was really bursting a vessel with rage as he wrote that about Henry, as much as I would love if that was the case. He’s being provocative to attract hits to his site. Hopefully, if everyone ignores him, he’ll go away and write about a book called “The Head Referee” or “The Fat Spanish Waiter” to leech off those clubs instead. It’s sad that a parasite has attached itself to us, but the best way to remove it is to cut off its source of nutrients – our clicks.

  30. fantastic post mate. You are very right that we have been almost there for past few seasons. But this ‘almost there’ syndrome for so many seasons hurts.. :(

  31. I’m tired of being lectured about fair play by media punks.

Aren’t the same guys who encourage teams to kick Arsenal off the park? Aren’t these the same guys who mock Arsene Wenger for trying to build a team without putting Arsenal in debt?

Are these not the same guys who say, every week, that “winning is everything”, “Football is about winning”.

If you listened to these guys, you’d think there was a clean pristine football culture before Eduardo came and infested it with his diving. Luckilly, they got on the case and nobody else dived until David Ngog English football again.

These guys are arseholes. They don’t care about fair play. They like incidents like Henry’s. It sells them newspapers, and keeps ears and eyes on their programmes.

  32. Thanks for the correction Sooth.

Agree on Palmer. He’s made himself into a traffic magnet.

  33. The Stadium of Light is an excellent stadium and will eventually have a greater capacity than the Arsenal Stadium. The people of Sunderland were originally insulted by the name as they thought that it was a facetious comment about their propensity to eat too many pies. But it was hastily pointed out that ‘Light’ referenced the miner’s lamp produced by Davy (no idea what his surname was) as the stadium was built on a coal mine. Capacity is believed to be around 47,000 although unofficially it is a lot more as a number of ex-miners know a secret way in.

I wish them luck with their football, they really deserve some good fortune. But not tomorrow, oh no, not tomorrow.

    ….Arsenal….

  34. Well said, Ole. Interesting stuff yesterday by the way. Not a ‘stats’ man myself but am always glad when they can be used to support my views.

On the only real sports story, well according to the media, apparently Phil Breakdown is so concerned that the trauma of losing to a ‘dubious goal’ might so adversely affect his three players involved in the game that he wants then to see a ‘sports pyschiatrist’. I think he might just need another trip to his psychiatrist.

    You couldn’t make it up.

  35. Arsenal should invite Thierry Henry over as a special guest for the Hull City game on 19th Dec. The sight of three of their players having panic attacks and hyperventilating on the pitch just before kickoff would be a rare Christmas treat.

  36. Darius,

A good thoughtful post, for a quiet, Arsenal, news day.

The thing to bear in mind is that journalists have to earn a living, and as so many of the ones employed on the tabloid sport pages are second rate hacks at best they have to resort to inventing their news or expanding on any rumour that they hear down the pub.

So many hacks rely on “transfer talk” to boost their column inches that they have to find ways to introduce the subject as often as possible, hence the denigration of the youth and inexperience of the Wenger squad.

Let’s wait untill the end of the season and see them eat their words whilst scrambling to climb aboard the Arsenal bandwagon.

  37. By the way, Consolsbob, thanks

  38. Wengerball thanks for clarifying .. I guess our players will have to tread more carefully.. I like your recipe for success voila..

  39. OK, just how far IS Cumbria from Sunderland. Where is Sunderland? Are we in for a soggy weekend? Is the ball going to move like a local pie and stop dead 3 feet away from Cesc’s pass? Will Arsh be wearing goggles? Will Rosicky be flapping in flippers? Are paddles needed?

Rules aside Thierry even handles beautifully and stylishly. In one move, he glides, controls, chips et voila. Not sure if I wanted the French or Irish to win anyway; which is more Arsenal? Used to be Irish in the 70s, surely. Aujourdhui c’est les Bleus n’est pas? I have a soft spot for both.

Hello Frank. Hello Consols. Thanks for that Darius. Greetings to all gentle ACLFers.

  40. viva algeria!

  41. lol..Yes Zimpaul players develop a divine touch of the ball under Wenger..

  42. Absolutely top class post, DS. Thanks to you and YW.

    @ wengerball
    Great comments at 8:22am

  43. Btw, AW teasingly hinted there is a third candidate for the vacant LB slot tomorrow. Wonder who he is thinking about – Eboue?

  44. As many as 4 candidates, FunGunner!

    Traore, Silvestre, Vermaelen & Gallas.

  45. Is it correct that Turner is also out for Sunderland tomorrow? If so, that puts their best central defender, midfielder and striker out of the game.

Would be very surprised if Gallas and Sagna aren’t rested tomorrow.

    Almunia
    Eboue Senderos Vermaelen Traore
    Song
    Fabregas Nasri
    Rosicky Arshavin
    Eduardo

If Sagna plays, Eboue might move up to the front three to give us more height and physical presence, and Silvestre might get the nod over Traore or Senderos. Finally, Arsene might lean towards Ramsey instead of Nasri. However, I think the XI above should cruise against Sunderland.

  46. OG:

How about a dark-horse for left-back in Ramsey? Arsene did mention him as a back-up in that role when he signed him. Still think Traore should get it, though.

  47. @Fun Gunner, considering that the 1st and 2nd choice LBs are out, how about these for options:

    1. Silvestre
    2. Traore
    3. Vermaelen (if either Song, Senderos or Sly replace him in the middle in an emergency)
    4. Gilbert (capable of playing LB or RB)
    5. Eboue (capable of playing LB or RB)
    6. Sagna (if Eboue plays RB)

Wenger’s headache is not that he doesn’t have options against Sunderland – it’s more who to leave at home.

  48. ArsenalArseneArshavin

The placenta is not working on RVP because the horse had an abortion…….

  49. Never liked Roy Keane but his latest on how Ireland are always deflecting from their shitty performances is admirable, he says they always come up with an excuse they had ample chances to qualify, that they should have cleared the the ball and that from the things Ireland they’ve gotten away with plenty in the past , which people choose to forget “what goes around comes around”

Even David Beckham is maturing like a fine wine, the worse his game gets, stating he honestly feels Titi didn’t mean it, he is not a cheat and that he’s had some bad headlines but you also get some good ones..

  50. Lagooner i wager Gallas to play while Eboue replaces Sagna.Arshavin might be on the bench. Silvestre to play LB instead of Traore.

  51. @ DS, OG

Yes, of course, there are a number of other people apart from Traore and Silvestre who could play there. But when AW was asked by the ATVO interviewer whether he had decided which of those two it would be, there was something in the way Arsene said there was another possibility, which made it sound like he was thinking about one particular player, and I wondered which one particular player of all the possibles.

  52. @ Firstlady

    Hello, btw!
I agree – can’t see Wenger making changes to the backline if he doesn’t have to.

  53. And it’s got to be said – hurrah! Footie tomorrow!

  54. One of your best YW, patience is a dying art in modern life let alone modern football….

  55. *sunderland is a team worth to be respected but not feared* guys here we come!!

  56. FunGunner hello
Been the longest of interlulls yet!!What with two of our players coming back injured.Good new is others are back from injuries.
We haven’t had it easy against Sunderland in the past few seasons..I remember that game last season(or is it but one) when Fabrigas equalized in the 4th min of injury time. Sunderland thought they had it in the bag coz they had scored in the 86th min or so(the scorer shed tears of joy).It was close.

Hope tomorrow is the start of better times to come at stadium of light. Us winning 2-1 will be fantastic.better still keep a clean sheet and win 2-0.

  57. Firstlady.

The game was last season – when Cattermole was given the freedom of the park and scored a shocker from 30 yards. Fabregas spared our blushes and scored in the last minute with a flicked header.

We were a different team then.

  58. thanks zimpaul,i`m from algeria and i thought we deserved to go to south africa, what happened in cairo la week was a disgrace, fifa was quick enough to ban maradona for doing nothing and bottled it when our the bus carrying the algerian team was stonned.thanks again.up the arsenal et allez les verts.

  59. Chamack what happened was despicable but still i wanted Egypt In S.A. Nothing against your National team. i just have a soft spot for Egypt. I was gutted by the result but life goes on.I’ll cheer for you come nxt summer. It will be winter in S.A.

  60. Good guest writing again, appreciate this Yogi.

  61. thank you firstlady,i hope we do well in south africa,i`m sure it will be a great world cup,few people on this blog may be dont remember how algeria beat germany(europeen champions back then) 2/1 in our first world cup in 1982.i have got a strong feeling this is going to be a great season,i have got no doubt that arsenal will be crowned champions come may.

  62. Flint McCullough

Thoroughly agree with the article Darius except the problematic Novembers go back far longer than 4 years.

If we do have a weakness “soft under-belly” it is a combination of post CL/Interlull away games against physical teams in bad conditions.

Not sure how physical Sunderland are this season but they look a decent side. The conditions look like they will be extreme so tomorrow will be a big big test, I feel.

For those ACLFers that don’t know Darius’ blog it is well worth a visit:

    http://www.stonecoldarsenal.com

  63. Thanks for what, Frank?

Words of wisdom? The naming of your greyhound? Advice on gardening matters?

  64. I like Algeria Chamakh. (And I also like rai music). I thought Algeria was the better on the day, in neutral territory (!); better organised, more forceful. I’ve never been a big fan of Egypt because of an ‘attitude’ thing they seem to have. Anyway, this era of Egyptian football, a golden era of sorts, is over. They need to start with a young generation.

FunGunner, yes, I think AW refers to Eboue. I doubt Vermaelen would be switched – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. He is at the heart of the back four.

  65. Sock it to ‘em, Darius!

Great stuff, ZimPaul. It really was a rather wonderful caress of a handball, you’re quite right.

KS, Roy Keane, while utterly unhinged and in urgent need of committing – has started speaking sense! Allbeit very aggressively and through clenched teeth.

FG, glad to see you’re as excited about tomorrow as I am. I do think we’re in for a very tough game. Sunderland barely scrape an international cap between them so Bruce has been drilling them for this for 2 full weeks. Question is, will this be enough to stop Team Amazing weave their wonderful magic?

While Bruce doubles the shuttlerun quota and slaps Darren Bent repeatedly in the face; (“I know they’ve got Tom Vermaelen but seriously Dazman, you’re giving the whole squad crazy-eye here with your constant, cowardly caterwauling”)
    - meanwhile, Team Amazing have been; scoring accidentally with their tummies, being knocked out of the World Cup (Andrey – alas!), playing in long, controversial games against teary-eyed Robbie Keane types and festooning ourselves in fetomaternal organs. It’s been a busy week and I wouldn’t be suprised if we’ve somewhat lost our touch.

Reasons to be cheerful though, include: DENILSON! Plus Eduardo has been back for a week, signing contracts and practicing ridiculuos beach skills down Colney way, to dazzle the pie-munchers with tomorrow. I’m backing Eddy for at least a brace. Come on Arsenal!

  66. I’ve pulled in to the station of the moderation nation. For now I must be patient.

  67. I hear Belgrade is a very, very placenta place at this time of year. Autumn leaves and all that.

  68. or early winter, whatever …

  69. That needs a poliziano accent.

  70. Liverpool v Man C should be a bit of dog-fight this weekend. I predict a minus-2 all draw.

  71. What’s the bet we maintain our free-scoring rate this weekend and send all the hacks further into dementia.

  72. Hey Zim,

Have to agree on the Algeria v Egypt game started off supported them in the thinking that Africa’s strongest teams should get to SA2010 but soon into the game I saw myself support the boys in white. (No often you can say that) The diving by Egypt was constant and annoying while the attitude, workrate and excellent goal landed Algeria their 2010 spot.

Also did you notice that all the neutral Sudanese were cheering on Algeria?

  73. As I feel I have been unduly moderated I am about to repost some babble from earlier. I apologise in advance for inflicting my babble on everyone, twice (if it works) – but it’s happening…

  74. Sock it to ‘em, Darius!

Great stuff, ZimPaul. It really was a rather wonderful caress of a handball, you’re quite right.

  75. Moderated again! Can’t for the life of me work out why. How unjust. I feel pointedly Irish all of a sudden. Ah well, thems the rules. It’s your world YW, we just live in it.

  76. The Irish want a replay, the French want a replay, Thierry wants a replay – let’s have a replay. Millions of people will watch and it’ll be a unique spectacle, packed with intrigue.

  77. All of those things, Cb, and more

  78. …..and during that replay we get injuries to WG, Bacary Sagna, Abou Diaby and Gael Clichy? I don’t want a fucking replay at all. The Irish and Scottish FAs complain there ways through every competition.

  79. Am beginning to like Roy Keane very much.
From hate to like..took four years; but he’s fearless. Don’t see him ever managing more than his dogs though.

  80. Yeah Fuck a replay French and Wenger are just doing PR work..

who’s to say there wouldn’t be another controversial unseen decision..

  81. Yay!! Walcott in the squad to face Sunderland.

  82. Everyone wants a replay. Let’s have a replay but Monsieur Domenech don’t you dare call up Sagna, Diaby or Gallas!

  83. Kev the clockender

Anyone who believes in fairness and justice would welcome a replay. Those who dont are encouraging cheating
If Bent does the same tomorrow will we all say “thats life get on with it”

  84. Personally i think peopleshould get off their high horse(s), the same Irish team was awarded a “phantom” penalty in February against Georgia, did Robbie Keane refuse to take the penalty because it was wrongfully awarded? Did the FAI off to replay the match? So why are they getting all righteous now?!

  85. not really mate

  86. Nope, I believe in fairness and justice but I don’t want a replay. Far as I can see the best team over two legs won. In terms of decisions France were denied a penalty and Ireland were unlucky to concede a goal. But all was within the rules of the game. Referees decisions were wrong but final….no replays. Everyone knew those rules before the games started in fact everyone signed up to those rules. Roy Keane has it right, if Ireland were good enough they would have won the game anyway…and they are not good enough.

  87. Oh sod off Kev the clockender,

If you don’t hump a cushion like my dog does, then you hate puppies and probably eat them.

Come off all this nonsense. This isn’t talksport. people here don’t fall for such nonsense as you’re dishing.

  88. to be honest, the irish F.A obviously knew thay weren’t gonna get a replay, but they were clever and thought if we’re going down, henry’s coming down with us and has used this complaint, which would inevitably be rejected to highlight the handball and make as many people as possible aware of how unfairly they went out.

I still love henry, and he’s even said himself a replay would be fair

  89. you’re quite “fair ” with your judgments ole..

  90. The replay idea is ludicrous.

There was a bad refereeing decision, shit happens.

Unless you are willing to replay every game influenced by a shite whistle blower then it just a garbage argument based on whines loudest. Much like the Eduardo affair.

If Ireland really deserved to go through they would have taken their chances, or perhaps equalised in the time left.

  91. For almost an entire country to take against one man for a split second action and to try to undermine his status as one of the best players in the world…ever… and for that country to even take it to Prime Ministerial level…then that is injustice. The Irish do themselves no favours with this sort of pious, bullying hypocrisy.

  92. pious, bullying, hypocrisy…

the three words that define this episode.

    Note I didn’t include cheating.

  93. i wonder when everyone’s going to stop talking about this incident?

  94. I agree with Frank…and look at the sun (They should call it the Dark Side of the moon). There is about 6 or 7 headlines calling Thierry Henry a cheat. A player who entertained millions of English people for 8 years like no other player did and now they’re doing everything they can to tarnish his image.

The only “Cheat” in this, is the English Media and their hypocrisy because if this was Rooney, they’ll find every lame excuse on the planet to justify it.

I love you Thierry Henry…I didn’t want you to do this and will not encourage it, but for all the happy moments you gave me, you get a second chance…

  95. Let’s try now, zaparodje. Did you know that at one time the coal industry in Sunderland was so pervasive that everyone and everything was black….including the cats?

  96. I really enjoyed Henry belittling the interviewer when asked why he didn’t tell the ref right after the goal.. (I thought players weren’t supposed to influence the Ref’s decision)

    now for the damage control..

  97. The gang’s all here…hey everyone.

    Darius: Nice post. Thanks.

I had a thought, (as usually occurs reading your posts,) it might serve well for some to realize that the nature of our struggles – injuries, etc. have quite a bit to do with who we are as a team.

Our team is built on blinding pace and intricate passing skill. Half the teams we play are simply collections of inveterate knuckle-draggers. Most of our games – it looks like the boys are trying to waltz through a stampede of retarded bison.

Most teams stay just this side of the rules but it’s like a boxer who hangs on round after round because he knows if he doesn’t clinch immediately he’s going to get knocked on his ass.

All this is to say…if our team is designed to do what it does and play the way we do…then injuries, and hence the need for the type of depth we have finally gotten this season in the midfield, must be, in a way, par for the course.

  98. was it? Was it really??

  99. In fact it’s good because I could not stand the possibility of another Iralnd – Italy tie in a world cup. It’s the most boring game you can ever watch.

  100. What a star you are, axis.

  101. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Keep fightin the good fight, Darius.

We need more Darius Stone types supporting Arsenal, that’s for sure.

  102. Hi Zimpaul, when you are back on could you let me know what you think of Ghana…footballistically of course…

  103. The referee will be well primed to watch out for cheating foreigners tomorrow. Eduardo will have to be very careful. Sunderland will certainly bethinking about all this furore in their approach the game.

It won’t matter in the long run but expect an even rougher ride iver the next couple of weeks from the fefs and good, honest English pros.

  104. Speaking of stars, the sun landed on a small fishing village called Derland, and forever changed it’s future. Who would’ve thought back then that the village would expand and host multiple drug addicts as well as a proffesional football side.

  105. Wenger might rotate the side he says, and leave out gallas, sagna and arshavin for the efforts put in by the trio on intenational duty- surely not? So our defence would be traore, senderos, vermaelen, and silvestre???

  106. they are good players but they probably havent played together….

  107. Hence the Wenger response CB

  108. Ghana are my outside bet for the World Cup this year….

Holland, Spain, Brazil or England I believe will be the eventual winners but I might add Ghana because their Under 20 team won the U20 World Cup and the full side came third in the ACN last year.

  109. …whoops that will be WC2010 of course

  110. saturday will be a sad anniversary, for it was a year ago tomorrow that our title hopes were effectively ended

  111. Darren Fletcher is a psycho:

“I’m going to ask you: ‘Do you fancy it? Do you like getting kicked? Do you like the fact that I am going to be at you for the whole 90 minutes?

“As soon as you get the ball I am going to be in your face. You are not going to like it one bit. And when we have the ball I am going to run you into the corner and you’re going to follow me. Are you ready for that? Because that’s what’s going to happen.’”

    http://fourfourtwo.com/news/england/42674/default.aspx

  112. Cheers Frank.

  113. Thanks Ole…and the lad says Wenger ruined his reputation…seems he’s doing just fine at that all by himself.

  114. cmooooooooooooooonnn

  115. axis,

I’m now worried about his mental health though. His reputation, being already low, had no room to fall.

Poor fool. He’s been traumatised. Cesc & Lampard have short-circuited his brain.

  116. Indeed…perhaps they need to up the voltage on his electro-shock?

  117. I’m sure if you asked Cesc the hardest midfield opponents he has faced, Fletcher won’t get into the top 20.

  118. Maybe a team tomorrow of:

    Almunia

    Eboue Senderos Vermaalen Silvestre

    Cesc Denilson Ramsey

    Rosicky Nasri

    Eduardo

Still quite a team and the bench will be brilliant.

  119. ““I’m going to ask you: ‘Do you fancy it? Do you like getting kicked? Do you like the fact that I am going to be at you for the whole 90 minutes?”

Fletcher offers 90 minute sessions now, does he?

  120. For tomorrow I’ll go with:

    Nasri Eduardo Rosicky

    Denilson Song Fabregas

    Silvestre Vermaelen Gallas Eboue

    Almunia

Bench: Mannone, Traore, Senderos, Walcott, Ramsey, Arshavin, Vela

  121. Ferguson used to turn a blind eye to Fletcher moonlighting as rough trade, but he’s got to be worried that these extra-long stints will wear the boy out.

  122. Makes you just a touch nostalgic for the Vierra days though, yes? I’d love to see Fletcher come after Cesc and find he’d left a knee back in his own half.

  123. He sounds like he’s an escort offering S&M, and maybe some bondage, maybe some buggery.

    Don’t he, Poliziano?

  124. The timing is great; less than two weeks after he was whining about an undeserved reputation.

  125. Whoops, Axis already said it.

  126. He can certainly bugger off.

  127. In the end it just isn’t enough anyway…without the obligatory Old Trat 2nd Half Penalty, they don’t win games.

Ol’ Darren like it rough, eh? Well we’ve got a Song for him to hum a few bars of…regardless, it isn’t rough but the sharp thrust he’ll have to deal with…we’ll see how he takes it in the end.

  128. Most likely, OG, unless there are unforeseen circumstances.

Do you think that team will play in the Standard Liege game as well? Seeing as we (ideally) need to win the group?

    ****
Just listened to AW’s press conference and his comments on the furore. Intelligent and thoughtful as always. He basically says either France should offer a replay or not offer a replay, but either way people should lay off Henry and the country and FFA should support him.

  129. And he called for video technology, of course.

  130. Darren needs to be careful. One can meet some very unpleasant characters in his line of work. It’s not all like Pretty Woman. An effete young fellow like him could easily get into trouble.

  131. Song & Diaby will kick Darren Fletcher off the park, if Arsene alloweed our boys to kick the opposition.

    FunGunner,

I see Walcott & Arshavin starting in the Champions League. Maybe Ramsey & Traore as well.

  132. i really hope gallas won’t be rested, i’m sure he won’t still be shattered….

  133. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Darren Fletcher is an average player, at best. Where was he against Aaron Ramsey? Did he fancy getting bossed 3-0?

  134. This Arsenal squad is the best I have ever seen.

  135. darren fletcher is a cheating, arshavin almost injuring cunt, no doubt about that. So are Man u, their team is nothing without
    i) Ronaldo
    ii) Alex Ferguson

  136. sunderland wont have their 1st choice keeper for this, which may hand us an advantage

  137. Zaparodje,

No that won’t hand us the advantage. That’s fully ours whoever plays for them or doesn’t.

  138. I think we have got several of those already, zap.

  139. Merely seeing the predicted line-up is getting me excited.

    Great to see Denilson back.

  140. Who is playing up front for them?

  141. Roy Keane continues to go up in my estimation. He is not afraid to stand out from the crowd and say what needs to be said.

Thank goodness the real football is back tomorrow and the vultures will find new carrion to pick over.

  142. Darius, top post. I am greatly enjoying your guest posts. Kudos to Ole for a great one the other day too.

Passenal and others I agree, I’m liking Keane more and more the farther from manure he gets.

G4E, like the new avatar too.

Also happy for Algeria, they rose above the fracas. I read reports that said there were 15,000 police for the 45,000 fans. Now that is crowd control.

Big game tomorrow, Sunderland have been a team I’ve liked for a few years now. They have some talent and can be strong at the Stadium of Light (which I think is one of the better names for a stadium). They will be tough and organized. The lads need to pick up right where they left off. Having Walcott and Denilson available is quite a boost as well.

Lots have mentioned it but I’ve not seen real comment. What is the deal with the placenta massage? Is it supposed to be stem cells or what? I can’t think what a placenta could bring to the table in terms of helping healing. Whatever it is Liverpool’s players seem to have established some sort of body connection with the placenta as their recoveries seem nothing short of miraculous.

Cheers all and Up the Gunners!

  143. Denilson will only come in and slow the game down with his backwards and sideways passes. The team has done well without him. In his absence, they’ve moved the ball quickly upfield.

We don’t need two DMs, Song and Denilson. Denilson is not good playing in Diaby’s role because he lacks pace to be effective as a box-to-box CM.

If Denilson plays, the draws begin as he doesn’t move the ball forward with his short passes and lack the pace to track back quickly to defend when he loses the ball upfield.

I’m hoping that with the absence of Diaby, Ramsey plays with Song and Cesc to maintain the fluidity and forward passing game.

Denilson is a good player but not great.

  144. Arsene says the France -Ireland game should be replayed. And he is right. That is why we love him. What TH did on wednesday was a million times worse than the Overmars goal and we gave Sheff Utd a replay. If France are really that good what have they got to fear from a replay

  145. Ted, France are not that good and won’t give in to the suggestion because they can’t win. They won the WC on home soil and were hailed as the best that came out of football, forgetting that they won on at home.

Personally, I believe you need to win a couple of WC away like Brazil and Germany before a nation can reach that status.

I still believe France are on the same level as England. They’ve been found short in qualifying despite their so-called Clairefontaine Training Complex. French players are no better than English. People make so much noise about their football but no better.

The English team would have beaten the Irish hands down.

The French-African team will be kicked out in the group stage to prove how crap they are.

  146. f*ck off howard.

  147. 3 of Howard’s personalities posting one after the other and agreeing with themselves. How deluded can one man get?

  148. OK then more of an advantage. Happy?

  149. where is this howard???

  150. Completely agree with those who are singing the praises of good old Roy Keane. He’s a top chap and no mistake. Yeah, yeah, granted, he’s among the filthiest players ever to have played in the premier league, and he ought to be in prison; but that’s all forgotten if he says something reasonable once or twice. I’ve never liked justice anyway. His principled stand against the media furor over Henry’s handball the other day deserves nothing but admiration from all right-thinking people. What courage! What honesty! Cynics, of course, have suggested that Keane’s attitude is merely another manifestation of the disdain he has felt for his national team ever since at the age of 20 he realised he was too good for them. Nonsense, I say. Nothing more than a coincidence. Keane might never have had a good word to say about the Ireland team in two decades, but that is no reason to suppose that his recent comments were anything other than the expression of his passion for justice. What a guy!

  151. Sorry PZ that was meant for Howard…

  152. They won WC on home soil not in Japan or South American so was England. Why do people conclude that they have better skilled players when they used rough tactics to beat Ireland to the WC?

Ireland, one of the greatest football nations?

  153. I’ve liked Roy Keane since he fell out with Ferguson.

  154. Regardless of his motivation, he is right on this issue though Poliziano.

  155. F*ck Off Howard

  156. where is howard have his comments been removed??

  157. Just to debunk the idiotic comment that France is a bad team.

France currently has some of the best players around individually, their problem is they have a crap manager who doesn’t know how to use that talent he has at his disposal as a team & as a group to get the best outcome. Not sure why the French FA is holding on to him, but maybe the question is…who else is there?

Henri Michel I believe is coaching Zamalek Sporting Club in Egypt..he’s one coach I think would do good for France.

  158. Zaparodje…Howard hides behind a few names to avoid the barrage of “F*ck Off Howard” he would get for his idiotic comments.

  159. Maria 6.09 / 6.10,

Yes, great to see Denilson back

S`land will have Bent & (Fraser) Campbell up front if Bruce feels brave enough to go with two strikers.

It`ll be tough particularly with a much changed team if Gallas , Sagna & Arshavin are rested but as Frank says , this is our best ever squad so we should have a little faith.

  160. ————————-almunia—————————–eboue—–gallas—–vermaelen—–silvestre—————song———fabregas——denilson——————–rosicky———eduardo—nasri——–

  162. well that went wrong

  163. ……..almunia………
    ..eboue, gallas, vermaelen, silvestre..
    ……Song….fabregas…….denilson..
    ……rosicky..eduardo……..nasri..

  164. I agree about France G4E – I wouldn’t be surprised if all this furore actually brings out the best in them. A bit of siege mentality might help.

  165. ————————-alm————————————-eboue—–song—–verm——-silv—————————deni———-cesc———-nasri———————ros————-eddie——–arsh——

  166. well it’s a start

  167. Exactly Passenal, and if you remember in they were in the same situation the last world cup and they reached the final even while having a crap manager. So it’s not all the player’s fault.

  168. i’m severely bored. Fuckiing arsenal tv friday night is shhit, i dont want to hear a scottish man talk abt thierry henry cheating. i dont want anyone to

  169. They’re all f*cking hypocrites, they all cheated.

  170. who said life was fair anyway..

  171. This comment made me laugh.

“If Denilson plays, the draws begin as he doesn’t move the ball forward with his short passes and lack the pace to track back quickly to defend when he loses the ball upfield.”

Can we have a repeat of the 1-6 draw at Everton that Denilson played in.

    Twat

  172. nice a caller just said we don’t have to worry about losing Arsene to Madrid but to Fifa .. It’s becoming more and more clear why platini has this vendetta against the him..

  173. keane is so untalented that he hand balled 4 times and it led to sweet fanny adams.

Now henry does it once and it goes in the net.

One could argue that talent still separated the sides.

  174. will be great to see denilson back

  175. HAHAHA good point deano.

  176. LOL…good catch Dupsffokcuf @ 9:28

  177. congrats to darius on a super post too.

  178. Late to the party today guys. Its murder in the salt mine. I hardly get into team selection pre-match day but I doubt Arshavin will play in the same way Gallas and Sagna will be rested. If our defence is altered significantly, I expect Denilson to start to add more protection to the back four. If not, Ramsey will get the nod in midfield. Personally I prefer Denilson at the start.
Tomorrow will be a tough game; we more than most of the Big-3 have been affected by the inter-lull. Historically we always return rusty and lack fluency at the start. This lokks like 2-0 to the Arsenal. Cautiously optimistic!

  179. c’mon Arsenal

  180. i think song will play in central defence

  181. I have just seen Roy Keane’s interview and I gotta say, I now see that guy in a different light. Quality interview. If anyone hasn’t yet seen it, I think you should pop off to You Tube.

  182. i’m real nervous. remember what hapened last time we went there? 1-1, that won’t be good enough tomorrow.

    come on you mighty gunners

  183. This is a headline from the Daily Wail:

“Sportsmail’s guide to the top 10 worst Frenchmen ever… and there’s no Henry”

Is it possible for a newspaper to get more racist and xenophobic than that headline. I didn’t even bother reading the article.

  184. Wenger says Vela and Eduardo will play upfront. Ok, I think it’s a lethal attack, the last time the two were unleashed on a defence burnley were well beaten by us 3-0 on home turf, with both getting the goals. however, vela is yet to prove himself on the premier league level, and last year he didn’t reach the expectations after some dazzling c.c performances, so tomorrow it’s a big day for him.

  185. COME ON

  186. Myles Palmer Has been Attacking Henry, Left this on his site

    Subject: This is Interesting.

    http://archive.arsenalnewsreview.co.uk/anr.features17.html

The prediction of the last pararagraphs of those articles turned out to be really prophetic didn’t it?

The incompetent buffon with an inflated opinion of himself that you are, no wonder you’ve ended up a sad old man spewing with demented indignation from behind your computer at people (wenger, henry) who have achieved more in their lifetime than you’d never achieve if you got reincarnated infinitely once your present sad life is ended.

Continue crowing of having written for Time-out! Even they couldn’t keep you on?!

  187. Mean Lean;

Didnt you see Keane’s rant about the pundits when they were questioning Wenger’s reign and sayinhg there was a crisis, etc?

he came out with some great quotes about how Wenger will be remembered for 100 years and what will they be remembered for…

    Great stuff.

  188. I’ve got ten “I Love Roy Keane” badges to give away to the first ten people on here who say how much they have come to love or admire Roy Keane.

  189. Spike, Mean Lean, congratulations!

  190. Thank you Poliziano! *jumps up and down with glee*

Please make sure to send it first class.

  191. “Sportsmail’s guide to the top 10 worst Frenchmen ever… and there’s no Henry”

What’s racist or xenophobic about that headline, Darius?

  192. You might have to wait a few days, Mean Lean. As well as the Roy Keane badges, I’ve got to post ten t-shirts that say “I hate xenophobia so much that I even get indignant about things that aren’t xenophobic.”

  193. Oh and I loved your comment to Gooner 2 (Riley 8) telling him that he should be a guess post writer, his response was classic. I was walking down the street cracking up.

So do I get some Poliziano badges as well?

  194. who was the prat that didnt understand what nasri was doing when he was praying?

  195. That was supposed to be Riley 8 not smiley face with glasses on.

  196. where has gooner2 gone. I want gooner2 to come. WHere are you gooner2???? haha that was funnnnyyyyyyy

  197. Dont remember saying I love or admire Keane though Polizi.

  198. Poliziano.

That headline comes with an edge at a time where it’s open season for Henry and the France team.

It’s an ill advised headline written to invoke interest and push up readership and it’s the worst kind of cloaked prejudice that you can find out there. The subtlety of it is more dangerous and the writer might have well said “I don’t like the French and I don’t like foreigners, and here is a list of those who make my blood boil”

  199. just had a look at your blog mean lean, reminded me they’ll be without kenwyne jones.

  200. defense, take a sigh of relief.

  201. If anyone wants the link, click on my name. What link?, you may ask. just click it

  202. zaparodje. Interesting link you have there.

I had my groceries delivered yesterday though – and some of the fruit and veg had seen better days so I declined to accept them.

  203. well it’s tescos isn’t it mate? You have your groceries delivered you say?? i hate tescos

  204. ok i’m talking about tescos. forgive me

  205. Indeed Mr Jones is out and that can only be a good thing.

I remember he caused us a few problems at the Emirates a few years back when we won 3-2. Robin scored his first freekick of the season and I somehow predicted that he would do so.

Not blowing me own trumpet or anything but I can actually see into the future.

If anyone wants to know anything then just drop me a mail and I will send you my paypal details.

  206. And what is wrong with Tesco’s?

  207. I will have another attempt at making a team:

  208. Tescos are very unwelcoming, they do not rise to the levels of fellow supermarkets and i don’t like their ads

  209. ————————almunia——————————————————————————————————————————————————

  210. oh, i forgot the rest

  211. Tescos?

Booo! Tescopoly is a massive issue I think Mean lean! Trying tio take over the world, just like Wallmart amongst others.

More Power to the local shop!

  212. ———————almunia—————————–eboue—-gallas——vermaelen—-silvestre————-song——–fabregas——–denilson——————–nasri————eduardo———–vela—————————-

  213. aw shit, another epic failure

  214. The list is just a joke. Nothing to get upset about. In fact, bien-pensant visitors to this blog would no doubt approve of Napoleon Bonaparte
and Jean Marie le Pen being on the list, althought they might protest about de Sade being included.

    1 Marquis de Sade
    2 Napoleon Bonaparte
    3 Jean Marie le Pen
    4 Michel Platini
    5 Mathieu Bastareaud
6 Rene Descartes, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre
    7 Jean-Michel Jarre
    8 Marcel Marceau
    9 Louis XIV
    10 Arthur Bostrom

  215. i cant do an effing team sheet

  216. And there I was thinking Tesco’s was a pleasant place where I can pick up a doughnut and a drink for a reasonable price.

I have been fooled for so long.

  217. 1 Almunia
    27 Eboue
    17 Song
    5 Vermaelen
    18 Silvestre
    7 Rosicky
    4 Fabregas
    8 Nasri
    12 Vela
    9 Eduardo
    16 Ramsey

  218. Moving away from supermarkets and onto super teams.

I think Arshy and Saggy will be rested. They played 120 minutes and only 3 days rest so a fully fit Rosicky and Nasri will start ahead of Arshain and Eboue will play at right back.

    Well that is my guess.

Does anyone know how to do tags again? is it [ ] or

  219. The missing tags gave it away.

That is a very attacking side zaparodje!

  220. haha, I have just had a message saying that I am posting messages too quickly, slow down.

    The cheek of it.

    *pauses*

    test

  221. Almunia
    Eboue Gallas Vermaelen Silvestre
    Cesc Song Ramsey
    Nasri Eduardo Rosicky

  222. yep, were gonna score 10- no seriously, ramsey i think would be our secret weapon if he starts….he’s in the form of his life.

WHy does arshavin need rest? OK, he went to slovenia, but in all fairness he didnt really do much, he was closely marked and he only played 90 mins.

Surely he’s had the time to wipe away the tears, but I do understand how he must be miserable

  223. Hopefully Almunia will be standing in goal instead of behind Eboue.

  224. Good team ML, we’ll see come 3.00. Lets hope Gallas plays

  225. I think we’d struggle if he did

  226. “WHy does arshavin need rest? ”

Because he played on Saturday and Wednesday while Rosicky and Nasri were sat at home drinking on hot chocolate.

So those two will be more fresh plus they do more going the other way. We would also have the option of bringing Arshy off the bench to get him ready to Standard Liege on Tuesday.

Well, that is my guess anyhoo.

  227. I do have some “I Love Poliziano” badges, Mean Lean, but I wear them all myself.

  228. I guess you’re right. He should come off the bench

  229. It’s real odd on here because when i write in your direction pz, the majority of me convinces me I’m actually communicating with a Green square.

  230. I miss Gooner 2.

I comment on here more than I do my own blog, there is something wrong about that.

Yogi is probably tucked up in bed right now but I must say, great blog. Great comment section, it really makes the site complete.

    *cue violins*

one day I hope to emulate a comments section like this on my own

*end violins they are seriously hurting my ears*

And with that, I bid the last of you a goodnight and here is to three shiny points tomorrow.

Steady Eddie to bag a brace contrary to my somewhat negative prediction earlier.

I feel like we are going to tear them a new one.

  231. the last of us is me unfortunately

  232. aah man i’m as bored as shit

  233. …..aaand noone’s around

  234. Sorry Zap!

Not got a ticket today and last season had 2 tickets and couldnt go!

  235. oh well, should be a good day

    then of course the game

then hoping everton get something from old trafford
