RvP’s ankle knack is going to keep him out for six weeks the club has confirmed today. In keeping with Arsene’s luck over recent years, this means he will miss around 10 games since the injury occurred in the last international break of the year. A month earlier and he would have missed about half a dozen games at most although no doubt his national coach would have called him up for a squad even though he it would have been patently obvious that he was not fully fit, leaving him to suffer another injury on top of that. Anyhow enough cynicism for one day.
As international week drags inexorably to its mindnumbing conclusion around the globe, it just would not have been the same without a Cesc to Barcelona story or two. Despite the player confirming over the weekend that he is not Mystic Meg and does not know what the future holds five years from now – or twelve months for that fact – the media has decided that the Catalans are going to offer the chance for Arsene to get his Yayas out with a Krkic. Presumably they will be offering a few vowels alongside this deal so that Arsenal can maximise their commercial revenues although no doubt any shirt with his surname on it would be a limited edition when the K’s ran out in the club shop. Alternatively, there is a view that Arsene is going to offer Fabregas for that pair although I think that someone, somewhere got the wrong end of that particular transfer stick and I hasten to add that having read that particular story three times, it wasn’t me.
Angus Kinnear, the Arsenal marketing guru, knows a thing or two about career progression. Step one is a bit of brown-nosing:
I think the board were very judicious in making sure that they appointed somebody who had an absolute understanding of the values of the brand and I think all the fans’ groups would testify that Ivan has demonstrated that straight away
Kinnear speaks of ‘the Arsenal way‘ and one hopes that the marketing department will not lose sight of that. At present, the whims of a single owner are not encountered and Wenger is able to set the agenda for pre-season tours. Kinnear acknowledges that it is a marketing opportunity lost purely in revenue terms. At the moment, the fact that Arsenal is a football club has not been lost sight of. That may come if commercial pressures change drastically, as they surely would were the plurality of ownership to end.
The article is interesting but throws out a curiousity, one that has slid by but in many respects is alarming. Kinnear states:
The 51,000 seats we have on top of those 9,000 are just a bonus
The 9,000 referred to are the middle tier. Does this mean that so long as the premium seats sellout, the rest of us do not matter? Mind you, the speed with which the ground empties before the final whistle, the players probably already know what the atmosphere would be like if the normal seats were unsold.
The club finances are not so strong that they can dismiss 51,000 people so readily. Surely he meant to say the 9,000 were the bonus not the other way around? Such slips can be forgiven but in my mind, it does undermine somewhat, the earlier protestaions that the Arsenal way was all that matters to the club.
Away from that, the deals with Emirates about shirt and stadium sponsorship are almost glossed over, despite highlighting the fact that the deals have been dwarved by the revenues earned elsewhere. The Emirates sponsorship helped build the stadium, something that was necessary and it is difficult to compare any deal signed in isolation and subsequently, by a rival when Arsenal were looking for a package at the time. Yes, the moneys may not be as extensive but likewise there is no evidence that they could have obtained more at the time the deals were signed.
’til Tomorrow.

I think he means “a bonus” purely in financial terms. If he meant the people, he’d have phrased it differently, perhaps saying “fans “or “supporters” or (shudder) “customers”, rather than “seats”.

Off topic, but interestingly, in the Mirror article about Diaby (for which the link posted on Yogi’s previous blog), it said that the physio team were working on getting him fit for the weekend game. Even if he doesn’t quite get there, that would suggest he’s not too badly injured.

Have a look at the Armoury Square splash on Arsenal.com today. There is a man in a boiler suit, half stood up, frozen in horror at what looks to be either a headless Thierry Henry or a headless Theo Walcott standing ominously in the entrance to the Armoury. Angus Kinnear didn’t make a slip of the tongue when he described the 51,000 non-premium seats at The Emirates as a bonus. In the preceding paragraph, he explains that the 9,000 premium seats at the new stadium generate as much revenue as all the seats at Highbury. The premium seats might not generate much noise, but they certainly generate plenty of money.

Doesn’t that mean that the 51,000 seats are the reason the Emirates was built (i.e. the part of the new stadium’s income that is additional to that which Highbury produced) rather than a bonus?

Again, you’ve completely mangled the rule.
The rule exists to prevent clubs from not releasing their players, claiming injury.
In this case, Arsenal allowed Diaby to join the France squad.
In any case, the rule is not automatic. The National team has to ask for it to be enforced. France will have to tell FIFA they want Diaby not to feature at the weekend.

Looking at ‘that’ tackle again on YouTube… he went in so fast and so hard; then he ignores RvP, gets congratulated by team-mates.. it was ugly.
In a meaningless match, wtf ?? So, he got the ball; and that makes it “hard but faur” etc etc.. It’s hard to see easily, but by the way Robin reacted, he was obviously in instant pain, so seems to me, he took some ankle with him.
Yes, it’s happened, it’s kinda ‘old news’ now ~ but would like to have seen the wanker atleast show the humanity to check that RvP was ok, rather than walk away feeling like a hero.

RvP’s injury brings up the issue of height and its importance in the EPL especially during set pieces. Now that RvP, Bendtner are all injured Diaby must be playing.
Playing AA, Nasri, Rosicky, Eduardo, Cesc will leave us short defending set pieces. In that case, Eboue and Diaby will have to play against Sunderland.

By: zaparodje on November 16, 2009

If you look at last season, he was out for the period that we started to go unbeaten
By: zaparodje on November 16, 2009
at 7:35 pm
I really think only Eduardo can do the job as RVP has done it. Both Vela and Theo have the speed to stretch defenses, but Theo cannot play with this back to the goal and I really don’t know if Vela can. What RVP did so effectively was drag defenders away from the middle. He could then kick the ball out wide or back to Cesc. Cesc has space to run into and either shoot or make a killer pass for an assist. Eddie can do that, perhaps Bendtner will be effective. The other options really offer something different – speed to get behind defenses on the counter-attack.
By: California Gooner on November 16, 2009

I still think his presence last season could have won us a few more points, and what we have to remember is we tend to draw matches a lot

Ignorance…no probs., boringly long posts – same; but negative nastiness ( the German GK) : Full blooded shaking and need to lie down time.
Last thing: AW has realised that height without speed is worse than useless.. just look at Thomas ~ 5′11 is hardly huge, but how that man can jump… am rather proud that we are small, fragile and the best team in the world on our day..
By: ponyboy on November 16, 2009
at 8:22 pm
It makes sense, doesn’t it, Passenal and LimparAssist? A defender in the penalty area will always try to get between the ball and his goal, so an accurate shot is likely to bounce straight back out. A shot that is missing the target will hit any defenders at an oblique angle, and could go anywhere – as we see with Lampard’s shots.
By: Poliziano on November 16, 2009
at 9:01 pm
@ zaparodje:
The reasons for Vermaelen having to stay back more is because of the change of play at Arsenal. The team stretch play and are more direct while last year the Gunners were more intricate so we are breaking teams down quicker.
Still when the opportunity arises, expect Vermaelen to break forward. But from an attacking view, the best thing is that he is so technical assured and comfortable on the ball and is always opening angles. Gallas is also underrated as he is quick to shift the ball away from his tackler.

It seems to me that it is expedient to have a kind of division of labour among supporters, with each making the contribution for which he is best qualified. The section of the support with an abundance of money contributes financially. They can wear their polo-shirts and urine-soaked chinos, chew their prawn sandwiches, and sit in silence, without thereby failing to perform their duty. The section of the support with an abundance of animal-spirits contributes vocally. Their tickets cost somewhat less, but they continue paying throughout the match with their passion. The holders of premium tickets, it might be said, put the players on the pitch, and the holders of standard tickets encourage them once they are there. The real villains, it seems to me, are those who neither pay through the nose nor pay with the heart. At a recent match, it was claimed that 85% of the crowd left before the final whistle. Only a minority of them can have been premium ticket holders.
I didn’t read the whole of that article about Angus Kinnear. From the section I did read, my impression was that Kinnear did not intend to give one section of support priority over another. If sales of standard tickets at the Emirates had generated as much revenue as all tickets at Highbury, then the sales of premium tickets would have been the bonus. The section of the support that was bonusized was purely an accident of the numbers.

There is more to it than that though, Pz. The club level tickets are set out as a thick band around the stadium. These seats rarely have an occupancy of more than 75% and even then only just after the kickoff. The impression one gets even in a game where more than 90% of all seats are occupied…very, very rare…..is that support is poor just because of the empty seats around the middle of the stadium.
Leaving early? There is often almost no-one left in club level at the 80 minute mark.
As for passion…..not a lot of it about in the Arsenal Stadium these days. You can’t market passion…and the more you try the more elusive it becomes.

One problem with in-stadium support in general is that Arsenal season ticket holders have too much money. If the game is televised people decide on the day not to bother, no question of selling the ticket on. Some supporters don’t bother to come even if the game is not televised. The fact that season tickets are paid for months before the season even begins serves to separate the cost from matchday attendance. Of course there is the fact that going to a game can be costly regardless of ticket price…train fares, food and drink etc. But the number of people paying £3.50 for a half-pint of lager in a bottle at half-time would lead one to the conclusion that matchday cost is not a problem.
The marketing boys have a problem….they aim the in-stadium experience at people with real disposable income. But these people are the least likely to contribute to the matchday experience and get behind the manager and players. They will tend to be middle-aged men and women between the ages of 35 and 70. They won’t put up with queuing or waiting around or any form of inconvenience. They will rarely sing.
There are of course people to whom the season ticket was very costly….very costly… and they will be horrified at the cost of the matchday experience. They will turn up but they will predisposed to despise elements of the club.
From a pure matchday support perspective the real supporters have been dispersed. They are now spread around the ground and their efforts to improve the atmosphere through singing, shouting etc etc are much diluted. Of course there is a vicious circle here, as the effect of empty seats, leaving early etc provides a negative feedback loop.
Still as long as the club is making money and the ‘brand’ is in good shape…..

1) “BONUS” SEATS
If I recall correctly, when the Stadium was opened the financial newspapers noted that 75% of matchday revenues come from those box/executive/exclusive/whatever-you-want-to-call-them seats.
That is distribution of revenue, the profit distribution might be even higher.
Further to this Peter Hill-Wood has been quoted in the press in the past as saying that Arsenal has been able to hold down the ticket prices for the general seating basically as a result of cross-subsidy from the exclusive seats.
Which makes sense as, generally there is a lot more demand than supply when it comes to the the cheapest seats at Emirates. In other words, they COULD charge more for those seats if they wanted to.
The flipside is that Arsenal is dependent on that executive revenue. I had though that a finanancial crash in the City would mean slashed expense and entertainment budgets, bringing Arsenal down, but now that the crash has actually happened, Arsenal is surprisingly still managing to sell those crucial seats.
But I see no reason to take offense: Kinnera is only stating the financial facts. Arsenal really only needs to sell those luxury seats to keep the light son and the Stadium open. The rest of the people coming in the stadium are a bonus. So why dont we just enjoy it and fill those other 51,000 seats!!!!
