Arsenal Muzzle Wolves & Show Greater Bite

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 – 4 Arsenal

0 – 1 Zubar (28 o.g.)
0 – 2 Craddock (35 o.g.)
0 – 3 Fabregas (45)
0 – 4 Arshavin (65)
1 – 4 Craddock (88)

Until teatime today, the Premier League table reflects the how much progress has been made this season, games in hand eliminated from the equation. Yesterday’s win was another indication of what has been put right by growing maturity of younger players, combined with a settled team and stronger central defence.

Wolves started brightly, Arsenal weathering an early storm to pass a tally of 100 goals in a Premier League year. That the century was achieved with two own goals is neither here nor there but indicative of a change in fortunes from November 2008 and the short burst of last season leading up to it.

The hosts could have taken the lead before their own ham-fisted intervention. Gibbs cleared a Doyle effort off the line whilst Berra should have beaten Almunia with a flicked header having been left unmarked in the Arsenal area, instead making solid contact for the perfect defensive header.

Needlessly fouling Eduardo on the left, Zubar let Arsenal create pressure leading to a corner. The resultant set-piece found its way into the Wolves net via his leg, Eduardo failing to make contact with the ball.

Within ten minutes, Wolves two-goal hero from last week, Jody Craddock had turned the ball into his own net, inadvertantly deflecting Eduardo’s chip over Hennessey even further out of the ‘keeper’s reach. Ramsey had been the lynchpin of the attack, retaining a composure to free the Croat to extract maximum damage, a composure that belied his youth. Arsenal were in cruise control without applying too much effort. Having promised his team would not rollover and let Arsenal tickle their bellies, Mick McCarthy’s team resembled a guard dog willing to take burglars to the safe, give them the combination and then help load the swag into bags for a clean getaway.

Chasing the game left many gaps in the Wolves defence. Against a team so effective on the break, it was tantamount to suicide football. The punishment came with half-time beckoning. Fabregas picked the ball up inside his own half, finding Sagna. The full back linked with van Persie who returned the ball to Fabregas, gliding across the pitch effortlessly, finding a calm and collected finish to end the contest.

With a three goal lead at half-time, inevitably the second half was lower key. Arsenal controlled, Wolves chased but to little or no effect. Arshavin hit a fourth halfway through with a snapshot from the edge of the area, emphasising the goal difference gap between Arsenal and United. There could have been more than four but no dount Wenger will look to strengthen his forward line in January as they are obviously not capable of scoring enough goals.

Wenger observed after the game:

We have a style where everyone goes forward. You cannot have everything in football, but I believe we have a good balance between offense and defence, and as long as we score as many goals as we do, we can accept that

The failure to keep a clean sheet will no doubt irritate him but not cause too many sleepless nights, Vermaelen was lost perhaps too easily at the corner by Craddock who jumped relatively unhindered to score at the death.

The pivotal moment in the game no doubt came with the introduction of Alex Song. Whilst the midfield was not overrun with Diaby playing the defensive role, not his natural game. Song’s influence in that position cannot be understated. His presence is similar to that of Gilberto Silva, emphasised when he is absent. A sign of the tremendous strides taken by the Cameroonian in his career, winning over the doubters with every game.

Aaron Ramsey made a solid contribution to the side. He has much to learn but his composure in setting Eduardo free for the second was in marked contrast to the rush of blood he suffered against Tottenham. It is a good sign for the player that he learns that quickly from mistakes. His overall passing was good and he worked hard to cover the pitch in defensive duties, such as they were.

In particular, his inclusion is a signal to other youngsters in the squad. Called in to rotate the first choice midfield, his performance vindicated the manager’s belief that he has a good set of players and his confidence in them. This season is a stepping stone for him in his pursuit of a first team spot in coming campaigns and a template for Merida and Wilshere to follow.

A very good win and one that leads the club into the international break in good shape. ’til Tomorrow.

  4. I thought Song was very good again, good positioning, covering and forward passing -

Did you see in the second half how he was pulling out of challenges to avoid the booking that would put him out of the Chelsea game (I think) but still surprisingly effective?

  5. YW

craddock did not score our first goal

    Ramsey superb

  6. While i do not want to dampen spirits and am as excited as everybody about the way we are playing and the spirit in the team we come back from the international break to games against Sunderland and Chelsea. this will give a truer reflection of where we are, not in regards to improvement, which has been tremendous, but in relation to winning the Premiership. we lost twice in Manchester even though we dominated both games, i would love to get the win against Chelsea by any means and performance whatsoever. if we outplay them it will be amzing and scare the living daylights out of everyone but if we nick a scrappy undeserved win it may prove even more pertinenet to the developement and belief within the club. can i also say what a joy it is to watch a group of players who really are enjoying what they are doing, William Gallas has proved himself to be a real man not the trouble maker we were led to believe maybe other people were more to blame for internal issues than we were led to, or wanted to, believe…..i must admit i have always been proud of doing things our way but have doubted the wisdom of it sometimes (in relation to silverware) but it does make you very proud to a Gooner when we are in the middle of something like this. Up the arsenal!

  7. This is the best Arsenal squad I have ever seen.

  8. but the spuds bench is still better.

  9. it’s amazing how before the game Wolves were touted as tough opposition and now pundits are pointing out that they’re some bottom table club and were so unlucky. Once again our greatness has been denied!

  10. I agree Frank. We have always had some quality first choice players, but we have never had such breadth and depth of quality throughout the squad.

  11. I think any club worth their salt would fear facing Arsenal just by looking at the bench. Rosicky and Nasri alone are not to be sniffed at and it must scare the living shit out of other team when they come on with us 4 nil up.

The only sad thing after this weekend’s performance is that I’m about to get a serious bout of Arsenalitis as another international break starts. 2 weeks is a hell of a long time to wait for a fix of Wengerball.

It was so much fun watching Alan Hansen on MOTD squirm last night when trying to find the words to answer Linekar’s question about whether Arsenal still have a soft under-belly. Shearer couldn’t kiss our arse enough.

  12. Who said womans football isn’t entertaining!! check this out tooo funny!

  14. The Spuds will win the World Cup and African nations cup. Sweeping all the trophies that count.

    Passenal,

I can’t but agree. If we win nothing this year, I’ll be more disappointed than in any season since 2003. We have the squad to do it.

    LouGooner,

Every game tells us where we really are. The Sunderland game will be tough because, as usual, players will come back injured, the likes of Gallas & Arshavin will have played, hard, crucial games. Then they’ll be back Thursday, and Thursday afternoon we’ll travel up North not having prepared properly.

  15. link should be http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=4629837

  16. thats right darius. Rosicky and Nasri for Arshavin and Eduardo? We dont lose out in a substitution! We gain different dimensions!

The 2 games after the international farce are pivitol. Sunderland will be tricky no doubt, but we should win it.

As for Chelsea. I’m actually realy confident we will beat them. Not to mention we have lots of players to return plus, our returning players atm will be reaching full fitness.

  17. So many pundits just didn`t know where our goals were going to come from. Everywhere is the answer to that one.

For those who insist we struggle at set pieces the stats don`t add up either. Scored 9 conceded 7 so far.

  18. Well Paulie. All the pundits can hide away as much as they want, but the stats and the table don’t lie.

55 goals in all competitions from 17 different players, as well as a +22 goal difference after a 11 game EPl stretch is absolutely phenominal. That alone is a statement of intent.

Also, someone posted the stats earlier comparing us to Chelsea, Liverpool, Manure and Barcelona looking at shots on target v goals and measuring the efficiency of our lethal attack. Arsenal came out tops at about 20% efficiency.

We’re the in form team in England and in Europe and that feels bloody good. Fuck the pundits, I’m enjoying watching them squirm.

  19. Lou – that is the beauty of this past week, it allows us to spend two full weeks looking forward to those two massive games. No pressure, but a great chance to really put our foot down.

Between now and the new year, Sunderland, Chelsea, Liverpool stand out as the tough games.

If we win against Sunderland it will set us up perfectly for the chavs. We can get the Carling Cup side a run out in midweek, or some of it at least. ( Be surprised of gallas and vermaalen start against Liege)

We might end November top with a game in hand.

  20. Credit to Mick McCarthy and Wolves for not adopting the team coach tactic… :)

  23. Yes we look good against weaker sides – this is nothing new. Van Persie is a key player- and we have coped well with adversity (injuries) recently. Yes Chelsea look to be the strongest team in Europe (and the EPL) at present but are not unbeatable. Can we beat a team which is so massively strong in midfield? Maybe not just yet – even a draw would take a superhuman effort from such a young team- but even by next year it may be a different story. One thing is for sure this Arsenal will be the best ever- if we can keep Rosicky,Fabregas and Gallas we need to keep Wenger and them far more than new players. However Chamahk would be a great January buy.

  24. Arsenal have a very strong team and as one of the Sentanta pundits described it yesterday he used the word LETHAL.

  25. Possible team for Man City in the Carling Cup

    Fabianski

    Eastmond Senderos Silvestre Traore

    Ramsey Denilson Nasri

    Walcott Bendtner Vela

Subs: Mannone, Gilbert, Bartley, Merida, Wilshere, Watt, Coquellin

    Not a bad side that.

  26. van persie on the bench my friend

  27. We beat chelsea away last year with a midfield of denilson, song, cesc, nasri.

Should have done better with the chances we created in the cup semi, but we matched them without a doubt. If that game had been played on a proper pitch it would have made a massive difference, it favoured them hugely.

If we deal with Drogba we will beat them, they cant come to our stadium and play passing football and survive.

  28. Maybe Deano, might come in handy if it goes to penalties.

  29. So when a shot is reflected its an own goal now is it??? so that means Lampard has only scored half his goals then. What utter crap.

  30. deflected

  31. i agree arsenehollis

Drogba is the key man whenever chelsea have managed to beat us.

I will point out that in the fa cup semi he was up against silvestre and djorou

This time he will have to cope with one thomas vermaelen and a revitalised gallas

  32. anyone thinks that song is crucial to arsenal playing well? i wouldn’t have imagined saying this 1 year ago, but i’m happy to swallow my words: arsenal struggles for 1st 20 minutes, Song came on for diaby @ 24mins, and the breakthrough comes at 28 mins, and arsenal looks comfortable thereafter. i guess the goal certainly helped to settle nerves, but i’m beginning to think that Song is an important part of the arsenal machine that will be hard to replace when he’s away at the ACN.
Diaby doesn’t inspire confidence in me that he has the position sense to play defensive midfielder; Ramsey’s a more intelligent player, so i hope he can curb the instinct to surge forward at the drop of a hat soo that he can cover song when ACN comes around…

  33. I don’t think Arsenal should be afraid of Chelsea. In fact, they’re afraid of playing Arsenal. They have more pressure to beat us, and we have better attacking players. They won’t be able to cope with a combination of Cesc, RVP, Rosicky and Arshavin, all of who are world class players. Song will be the key and as long as he can keep Lampard and/or Joe Cole quiet, Vermaelen will take care of Drogba and Billy G will deal with his mate Nico.

But that game will be run by Cesc, RVP, Arshavin and Rosicky. Wenger has the luxury of unleashing Eduardo and Nasri on them for good measure.

I think one of the attitude and mental adjustments needed this season is for all of us as Arsenal fans to also have a winning mentality like we’re fans of a team that are Champions elect. The team have already done this. There is nothing to fear about Chelsea, especially when Wigan and Villa make them look very pedestrian and agricultural.

And Cech is not the same fella in goal anymore.

  34. James

Just checked – I didn’t say Craddock did.

    YW

  35. YW – You didn’t mention that nailed on penalty won by Eduardo at around the 11th minute. I find it disturbing that refs have decided to swallow their whistle when Arsenal players are so clearly fouled in the box.

  36. The exaggeration of the importance of Song to Arsenal is starting to get irritating. The team will not collapse if he is absent. We have lost more important players in the past and have not collapsed. It’s remarkable how some people have the uncanny ability to turn even praise into something unpleasant. I suspect there is corruption at the heart of this exaggerated praise. Perhaps it comes from a wish to do penance for needless criticism of Song in the past. Perhaps it comes from admiration of the physical aspect of Song’s game, which is preferred by many to more subtle talents, despite their protestations to the contrary. I have no doubt that the midfield that started yesterday would have managed perfectly well once they settled down. To write off a new midfield combination after 20 minutes is idiotic. I doubt that Ramsey will ever be as effective at winning the ball as Song is; but once the whole midfield adapts to the new demands being placed on it, it can still perform to a sufficiently high standard. It is worth remembering that it was not Song but Denilson that won the ball so often for us last season, and at the beginning of this. Denilson was never embraced by the fans as Song now is, probably because he has less weight to throw around. When, this season, we lost him through injury, we stumbled slightly; but his replacements soon became accustomed to the task they needed to perform, and we have continued winning. Injury or absence might mean we cannot put out our best team; but that is irrelevant. All we need is to put out a better team than our opponents, and that we can always do.

  37. Goongerry: “Yes we look good against weaker sides – this is nothing new.”

If you’re suggesting that we didn’t look good against Man U and Man City this year, I have to disagree with you. Man U’s selection and tactics were desgined to neutralise our strengths. If not for some dodgy refereeing decisions, we would have come away with at least a point.

We would do well not to sell ourselves short with self deprecating comments.

  38. Nasri seems more lethal than Rosicky at the moment.

  39. Shotta-gunna -
It would be truly amazing in Eddy EVER gets a penalty in the EPL ever again.
    Pathetic.

However, it doesn’t matter as Koeman (he really does eat too much cheese) has decided we can win nothing ; we play too much [ too much like Barca!]; we are inexperienced ; and we are not physically strong. Dammit!

  40. Poliziano

Very well put, right on song..

  41. Yes but Rosicky adds something to the team that we don’t have, I cant exactly work out what but he just seems to know where everyone is in relation to the goal

  42. Shall I watch Hull vs Stoke? No I wont, im gonna watch motd again. yay!

  43. hull vs stoke is surprisingly a watchable game- Im routing for Hull, so Phil Brown’s downfall can be momentarily halted until we play them and beat them 10-0

  44. Hull 0-1 Stoke

  45. I don’t want to spoil anyone’s sunday but Hull have just gone 1-0 down to Stoke.

It’s awful. Poor Phil Brown might get the sack.

  46. “Yes we look good against weaker sides – this is nothing new.”

Not been an Arsenal fan for the last few years have you?

I’m constantly amazed at how petulant Arsenal fans are. We give Song a rest, and with Denilson injured (remember him?), we try a new formation. Then an extremely motivated team at home puts pressure on us through a massive and unsustainable workrate (very common).

So what do we do? We give up on personnel that conceded zero goals after TWENTY F*CKING MINUTES!

    Unbelievable. Spoiled brats.

  47. zap, what Rosicky adds is another Cesc. A front 4 of RvP Arsh Ros Cesc is the most fluid formation of vision/passing/finishing skills imaginable.

  48. yeah true, I just hope rosicky’s small injuries stop plaguing him, we just need him to stay fit

so, sunderland away in 2 weeks, miserable outing last time round, cesc rescued a point, hopefully we wont be rescuing anything come saturday week

  49. tim,

    No.

The way it works is that when you go away, and you face a battling team, you contain them first, and then start to play.

That’s what happened. It’s as simple as that.

  50. you’re right nolaboyd..

I usually go to pubs where there’s a good mix of opposition and arsenal fans. yesterday I went and watched the game with only Arsenal fans, and while some of it was good, the negativity was so depressing.

you know…I’ve never in my life come across any supporter of any team suggest for the sacking of a manager when his/her team are 4-0 up.

I don’t know if I’ll be doing that again. I’m still angry at some of what was said yesterday…Maybe I sometimes live in my own bubble with respect to caring for our team so much that I’ll never criticise them while they play, but I’d rather watch Arsenal games with supporters of other teams because they’re much kinder to our boys.

  51. Who would be the best candidate to be slotted in DM when Song is gone for ACN? I don’t think Ramsey is comfortable in that position, he takes on a similar role as Fabregas. I would take Denilson all day.

  52. Poliziano at 1.10pm – absolutely bang on.

  53. dont forget hopefully by that time, we’ll have some or hopefully all of these players in midfield: Fabregas, diaby, Denilson, Walcott, Eboue, Arshavin, Rosicky and ramsey to choose from, though it’s likely some of those will be injured.

we’ll wait and see, first of all we dont know wether we’ll still be challenging for the title come january

  54. Gooner 2 has just scored for Northwich with only minutes remaining.

  55. Charlton have been awful and should have had at least one player sent off.

  56. Mancs start with Evans and Brown at central defence? Squad depth? Looks like a certain Chelsea win to me. Chelsea’s weakness may be Ivanovic as fullback…

  57. bpb;

The mahogany stained twat’s team have nicked it!

  58. Hahaa, Nortwich Victoria to the second round. Let’s all laugh at Charlton, that was just a pathetic display.

  59. Considering how pivotal he’s been to our play thus far, I feel we’d certainly miss Song if he were to get injured or left for the ACN and I really can’t see how his contribution can be exaggerated, alongside TV and RvP they’ve been the top three performers in a fantastic team effort so far…pretty obvious I would have thought…but cope we certainly will, Denilson beckons

  60. FRANK DONT YOU KNOW THIS IS INTERNATIONAL WEEK EVERYBODY TALKS TO THE MEDIA SO SAGNA IS GOING TO JUVENTAS, CLICHY TO REAL MADRID, VERMAILEN TO LIVERPOOL, FABRGAS TO BARCELNA, SONG TO CHELSEA, ARSHAVIN TO MANU, RVP TO MAN CITY, AND EDUARDO TO INTER.WALCOTT TO MIDDLESBOROUGH

THAT LEAVES US WITH JUST ALMUNIA , DIABLY, BENTDNER, AND MAYBE EBOUE.

    WE ARE IN BIG TROUBLE

  61. Poliziano @1:10 pm

I couldn’t agree more on the “exaggeration of the importance of Song to Arsenal” and feel quite uneasy with that.
Song’s been playing well, but people turn their eyes away from mistakes he makes, but use a microscope for Diaby’s mistakes. I feel that those excessive praises for Song are being used to beat up the scapegoat du jour, Diaby.
I’m certain that what changed the game yesterday was the first goal, not Song’s arrival- equivalent to the departure of Diaby. I’m not even sure who was supposed to play in the holding role, Ramsey or Diaby (I think it’s Ramsey).
It’s deja-vu of last season, some people praying for Denilson’s leg break so that they didn’t need to put up with that “crap” performance of his, but giving the chance to Ramsey instead who was perceived to possess far superior ability to Denilson.
What I fear most is the abuse the player(s) who’ll slot in the holding role in January would be getting if we don’t get perfect results. Already some predict that it’s inevitability for us to drop points when Denilson or Diaby play instead of Song.

  62. Who are these people over playing Song’s improtance? And isn’t it a positive that he IS getting some credit for the job he is doing?

Perhaps there are a few who slate Diaby now, when they used to do the same to Song! But their arguments are as weak as my nan’s tea.

  63. Harnet and Poliziano spot on.
Have we been so sensational in all our other matches in the first 20 minutes that we can now look at yesterdays match and say it was all Diaby’s fault?
I dont think so. The players seem to get into the match as it goes along and then the team looks better.
The other question to ask is how can the team get experience of playing without Song if as soon as he is not playing everyone wants to have a go at whoever is presumed to be playing in that role??
On a slightly different note one of the betting sites had a breakdown of the average number of points gained by the ‘big’ four against ‘lesser’ teams – we are joint top with chelsea at 2.44 per game
    Looking good!
    all the best
    Dave

  64. Nasri, Cesc, Denilson
    Denilson, Cesc, Ramsey
    Eastmond, Nasri, Diaby
    Diaby, Denilson, Cesc

These are are a few combos of our midfield when Song jets off to the ANC.

  65. harnet,

Very well said. Song makes mistakes, and some of those have led to goals. But he’s playing well, and his footwork sometimes reminds me of Ruud Gullit.

Alex Song is doing well. Like Diaby he will still improve a lot.

Diaby has to fix his decision making, knowing when to release the ball. He has to improve his heading technique.

Song has to improve his concentration. He has moments in which it almost seems he blanks out. His athletism has improved but he can and will improve even more.

Denilson has to improve his heading, & build up strength like Song & Diaby have done and he’s potentially the best defensive midfielder of the lot.

Diaby is lucky. His natural attributes give him a headstart over the other two.

  66. Ahh, I now see what harnet, Polizi and others are referring to! Just checked out Arsenal Analysis and yep, Song is being lauded at Diaby’s expence.

How sadly predictable by that particular “author”.

  67. Ah, what a surprise. John Terry getting away with murder in the area, yet again.

    Obviously the referee and linesmen are abiding by FA rule 265 sub section ix, paragraph D;

“Thou shall not book, or award decisions against England players in any circumstance, particularly England captains.”

  68. Man United the better side so far and look the more likely to get the first goal. I didn’t expect that.

  69. We have more goal scoring threat than these two sides combined.

  70. Poliziano at 1.10pm – I couldn’t agree more. The doomers are working on their excuse for January if we have the odd blip. Exaggerating one player’s importance in order to down play the role of another is a pathetic way to support a team. They may have forgotten what Denilson brings to that role, but I’m sure Arsene has not.

  71. These teams play well, but, oh man, are they boring to watch. Rooney gave the ball directly to a blue shirt 5 times in 5 minutes… can see a Drogba/Anelka goal a-comin’…. Who’s going to score for manure ?

  72. Arsenal will cope fine without Song when he heads for the ACN.

Sometimes it almost sounds like we’re the only club dispatching personnel to Angola in January.

  73. Do these teams work on keeping the ball in training?

  74. Terry has just elbowed Valencia and got away with it. He’s just not that type of character to do it intentionally, is he?

  75. This match has all the hallmarks of being a draw – and it most definitely suits Arsenal.

  76. Chelsea’s training schedule
    —————————

    1) Light stretches
    2) Swearing practice (Cole & Terry need not join in anymore)
    3) Drogba practice hitting the ground like you’ve been shot
    4) Lampard deflection shooting practice
    5) John Terry shirt tugging sessions
    6) English grit warm ups
    7) Smashing the ball forward to Drogba’s head (if touched see no. 3)

  77. Guys – I have never seen such a defensive minded set up by ManUSA. Rooney as sole striker, 3 defensive midfielders and 2 ordinary wide players. Sir Alex is playing for a draw or possibly nick one on the countrer as they did with us. Wow, look how far have the mighty fallen!

  78. DS: “The referee dealt with that rather well”.

Terry is an UGLY player. Frankly, he should be off the pitch, and had he been one of us, he might well have been.

Ok – gonna watch something else…this is dull crap. Top two teams ?

  79. Quick change of topic, did anyone see MOTD’s version of Darren Bent’s dive?

Totally ignored the fact that he went down without being touched yet couldn’t wait to crucify Eduardo for being clipped by a crap goal keeper.

I guess it is what we should expect.

  80. Spike @ 4:13pm – Thanks for alerting us to those twats at Arsenal Analysis. They are just the echo chamber of doomer-dom.

  81. Haha! Great training routine there Mean lean!

  82. sotta;

Yeah, I shouldn’t really! I also felt the need to post a respnse on there too. Silly me!

  83. Wow. Is this what the two “best” teams in England can offer in attractive football? This is a dire.

  84. Correction: ” This is dire”. But then the pundits cannot be wrong as either of these two teams is ordained to win both the Premier and Champions League.

  85. Anyone who decided yesterday’s game was won with the replacement on 20 mins of Diaby by Song – implying a substandard performance from Diaby in the defensive role – is barking up the wrong tree entirely. In fact they’re barking mad.

Diaby wasn’t playing the defensive role. Aaron Ramsey was. Diaby may have been playing a little deeper than usual, but he spent almost the entirety of his playing time higher up the pitch than Ramsey who was fulfilling Alex Song’s usual position; sat in front of the centrebacks. He was tidying up, breaking up Wolves’ few attacks and feeding the forwards from the back. He played the role beautifully, if at times with a fractional over-zealousness in trying to be all things to all men – becoming overly comitted up-front, at the expense of tracking back when a move broke down. This only happened once though. Overall he was just superb.

Diaby played very well for 20 minutes, helping Ramsey in the same way Denilson and Song were doubling up at the beginning of the season as a platform to release the sublime attacking potential of Faberge. For the most part though, Diaby was looking to get forward – as is his nature. He played one especially sweet first time through ball to RVP off the back of a 1-2 from Arshavin, similar to the one he produced for Bendtner to score in Liege.

What I am noticing is the increased fluidity in our three central midfielders. Since the beginning of the season we have seen the wonderful flexibility of an ultra mobile and versatile front three. Now we’re beginning to see this same efficient role-sharing with the central three. This was partly accentuated yesterday I guess, by the fact that Ramsey was everyfuckingwhere, but still… So much movement in us now it’s scary. And I think it’s pretty revolutionary too. Great days.

  86. “Pride goeth before the fall”, they say. These pundits will rather go through hell than admit they were oh so wrong about Arsenal. It is going to be a very long fall indeed.

  87. Shotta. The media will find another name to describe the game. “Committed, intense, quick” take your pick.

They’re even calling it a game of the top 2 clubs in the country – conveniently forgetting that we’re 2nd on the table.

Truth is the game is boring.

  88. Chelsea V Man Utd

    YAWN

and… WTF – why wasn’t Terry sent off for a blatant pull down in the penalty area ?

  89. Well D.S. – Every moment Rooney gets possession, the English commentators on my feed are wetting their pants, oohing and aahing, even if he runs into a cul de sac. Similarly, every move by Lampard and Terry, is treated as if this the reincarnation of Maradona and Passarella. In truth they have all been ordinary, so far.

  90. What I find mad is the suggestion that there exist an inverse mutually dependent relationship between Diaby’s performance and Song’s, yesterday!
Song’s introduction clearly had a positive impact on the team but should that imply Diaby’s performance was poor beforehand?

  91. the united chelski game is ok…one thing I will say is that the Premier League has some shit refs. I hope whoever referees our game against these dirty folk isnt as garbage.

  92. I woulod love there to be a humongous diving controversy incident involving Terry and Rooney. It would be hilarious the f*ck the pundits and little inglunder hacks would respond to it! They’d blow a gasket in their poor simple minded brains trying to worm their ways out of it.

  93. I agree with you Shotta. There’s a blatant commentary bias towards English superstars regardless of how pedestrian they are. During half time, some hack even suggested Chelsea’s play will become better if Joe Cole comes in for Deco or Ballack who are shit.

This game makes me feel good about Arsenal and our philosophy of total football. The way we win the title playing Wengerball and the determination to build something beautiful is truly a sweet thing. Most of these hacks and pundits are too stupid to understand it.

I’m off to have some dinner…it’s probably more interesting than this game.

  94. Abid: OK, not great. As gooners we are biased and spoilt by beautiful football but there has been nothing sensational, so far.

  95. its just “ok”…I don’t know what else to say about it. I can’t compare it to Arsenal because that’d be horribly unfair.

My concern with playing against these guys is Essien…and goalkeeping.

ugh…chelsea are so disgusting. dirty scribbled across everything they do.

  96. Darius;

A dinner of stale bread and boiled cabbage would be more interesting than this game.

My only hope for any entertainment is a mass brawl. The football won’t do it.

  97. stay like this, 0-0

  98. Draw, draw, draw…

  99. “Guys – I have never seen such a defensive minded set up by ManUSA. Rooney as sole striker, 3 defensive midfielders and 2 ordinary wide players.”

Did you happen to see Arsenal face manure at ol’trafford earlier this season?

  100. would it kill man u to wear a poppy on their shits?

  101. hahaha the commentators are so…ridiculous? and stupid. yes. the fact that they’re actually frothing in excitment over this game is frankly impressive.

  102. “A dinner of stale bread and boiled cabbage would be more interesting than this game.”

That’s the problem; we’re used to the gourmet stuff.

The consensus elsewhere seems to be that this is a “pulsating encounter”.

  103. that was close. You think the sky sports commentators are over-enthusiastic?? Try watching this on an Arabic channel

  104. Seems everyone on this board have buggered off due to boredom. But we shouldn’t as this the Chelsea we will face in three weeks. While we have the talent, that won’t be enough. As Arsene stresses, we will need to draw on our self-belief, determination and self-confidence to see them off.

So far this a tactical victory for Slur Alex; knowing his team’s limitations he is playing this very conservatively and hope to nick it with a moment of brilliance by Rooney. He is a very cynical old codger; evidently he only cares for the results and not for the style of play.

  105. Ha! Andy Gray emphasising how difficult it is for fergie to improve the team due to a lack of options on the nebch. And our squad lacks depth?

  106. um, thats supposed to be bench.

  107. i’ve actually buggered in due to boredom

  108. Injury! Injury! Injury!

  109. Now that’s gotta hurt. How didn’t the assistant see that Evans had his foot so high.

And a booking for Drobga :D

  110. oh

  111. I’m sorry, but this ref is fucking ridiculous.

  112. Atkinson, or whoever the referee is could not see that though.

Goal for chavs. After that you should of for it…

  113. The mass brawl is on the cards… Hopefully red ones too.

  114. dive again drogba, dive again

  115. Man U undone by yet another set piece. They really have a weak underbelly. Losing Ronaldo and Tevez has left them with a massive lack of grit.

  116. A victory for classlessness. Drogba gets his revenge. Who laughs last…..

  117. abid, remember that the referee could not have seen that. Also, dangerous play is a foul, even if the danger is to yourself.

That means Tevez’s landmark diving header to another players feet can be given as a foul against him.

  118. Does Pierluigi Collina have a son?

  119. I hope United equalise, Drogba and Atkinson collide and have to be carried off and that’s the last we see of them.

fuck..I don’t want the blue cunts to move up further up the table.

  120. hahahaha

  121. Spike – we may get a mass brawl at this rate.

  122. okay, its not just that one incident. He’s been making a bunch of really awful calls

  123. Ancelotti said before this game that he’s not worried about Manure and is looking more at the progression of Arsenal who will be their rivals this season before this game.. surprisingly Red nose didn’t respond..

  124. …aided and abetted by Martin Atkinson. What awful refereeing? Serves Slur Alex right cause he is been baiting the 4th official from the start.

  125. why can’t United do just 1 thing right? you know…holding these guys to a draw would’ve been perfect.

  126. “This referee, incidentally, is the one who gave United unlimited stoppage time in which to beat Manchester City earlier this season.”

hah..oh. Why can’t he be relegated to the Championship then? Clearly he’s not good enough for the Premier League. Or maybe he’s decided to balance out what he did last time?

  127. sorry, im really scared of someone like that refereeing our game. We really could do without this.

  128. Manc players, especially Fletcher are shouting again about every decision without getting booked. Of course, miraculously Rooney got booked, so others wont.

Needless booking for Valencia, his first foul in the game? Another proof to Wenger’s opinion that referees ‘go for the spectacular’.

  129. You’ve got to admire Chelsea’s defensive resolve. They will be hard to beat.

  130. A question: were there issues with the pitch yesterday? A lot of our passes lacked precision or went astray. That has been chalked up to the team ‘not playing very well’. But I just figured that the pitch wasn’t very good. Anyone have an opinion on or knowledge about this?

  131. They will be…which is why a draw would’ve been perfect today. Still, we have a creative edge that United don’t and I expect a highly different game from the one today.

If alls fair then I believe we can win. Chelsea are strong but we’re not to be messed with.

  132. well Arsenal stay second with a game in hand. We just need to beat chelsea now

  133. ManU fail to pull another rabbit out of the hat. We remain 2nd with a game in hand. Guys this is shaping up rather nicely. Lets hope our players, especially the defenders, return from the int’l break in one-piece. Our Chelsea game will be significant, not critical. The title isn’t won in November.

  134. When Man United play well you never know if they’ll win. That’s why they’re down to 3rd in the league.

  135. Hmm, looking at the goal from replay, I think it should’ve been offside. Drogba was right in front of Van der Sar and it’s ridiculous to say he didn’t affect the game.

  136. Well, I couldn’t watch Chelsea- Man U, but it sounds like Man U was well and truly robbed. Obviously, what goes around comes around. It kind of serves Sir Alex right for slagging off the refs after benefiting hugely from their favoritism over the years, but it feels like an injustice to Arsenal to let Chelsea get the points.

  137. Yeah…so it all falls down to Arsenal to see if they can haul Chelsea back…Still too early for title race talk but winning against them would be massive.

  138. Fletcher, Rooney, Evans all raved at ref. Arsenal players would have been booked for that.

  139. Have to say also that Chelsea were not very impressive, their passing under pressure is bad. How will the pundits explain this, a third away defeat already for the mighty ol’ Fergie.

  140. Gentlemen, this is looking like it’s going to be a 2-horse race while the poor Man United melt down. They need a strong dominant midfielder.

  141. we need to beat Sunderland, chelsea will get complacent and will drop unexpected points like against wigan and as the season goes on their age will show..

  142. Ole, Rooney was booked, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. A second yellow for a manc player for protesting in the same game would have been plain weird.

If Drogba had a bad injury, instead of only looking like he had brain aneurysm, that is some good news for Arsenal.

  143. What a shame the mancs couldn’t hold out for a draw.

  144. Kitchen Sink, I’m surprisingly confident about Sunderland game. It’s one of those places were Arsenal players will remember last year and want to correct that.

Also, Cattermole and Jones are still out I think. For me, Bent is not as dangerous against Arsenal as Jones.

  145. I am still on board with Ole – Chelsea is an ageing team and together with the ACN departures, odds are they will start losing points in January onwards. ManU is not out of the race.

  146. the sunderland game is a tough one because we’re coming back from the international break…and then we have the champs league right after. it’s a really tricky fixture not to mention all the travelling, lack of rest and training. add on injuries to that.

  147. Fergie made the mistake of slating the refs fitness – I think he has upset them, so we might start to see him and his players treated the same as all others.

  148. Shotta, I expect man u to buy in January, but whether those purchases will be able to settle quickly is another matter.

  149. A question: were there issues with the pitch yesterday? A lot of our passes lacked precision or went astray. That has been chalked up to the team ‘not playing very well’. But I just figured that the pitch wasn’t very good. Anyone have an opinion on or knowledge about this?

No idea about the pitch but it was more because of the rain, I suppose. Everybody slipped the ball or themselves since everything’s wet. Van Persie had quite a spectacular fall at one time actually.

Damn it, should have been a draw. But MU’s losing can’t be too bad. I hope.

  150. We let Man poo off. If we hadn’t gifted them victory, this’d be their 3rd defeat to Top 4 sides.

  151. Chelski will soon have their mid-season meltdown. It usually starts in late November. Hopefully it’ll start with a spanking we hand them at the home of football.

  152. .

  153. *

  154. Manu’s weakness is still the same as last season they lack a mid-field talisman of the calibre of Cesc or Rosicky who would stroll into that 1st team (ronaldo compensated for this with goals and when he wasn’t scoring and the game was deadlocked they could always bring on Tevez who would change the pace and up their momentum). they have plenty of robustness but giggs simply isn’t enough..

  155. good result today. Cant bemoan anything…chelsea looked poor….man u lost.

  156. Now our game with Chelsea is a ‘must win.’ We need to pull them back in their strides and finish them off in January when Essien and Drogba leave to play in the African Nations Cup.

A draw would’ve been great, it just didn’t work that way. MANU looked the better team though.

We need to beat Chelsea on November 29; it will be tough but we can beat them.

  157. RVP: “I desperately want to win the Premier League and the Champions League with Arsenal and I truly believe that’s possible.

“I get the chance to play with the likes of Fabregas, Arshavin, Eduardo, Walcott, Nasri and Rosicky – great players who play a beautiful game.

“Then I watch some teams on TV and think: ‘Oh my God, this is so ugly!’

“That helps me realise how special it is to be at a club like this. I want to win it all with Arsenal.”

  158. John Terry’s dad a drug dealer?

    http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/587550/John-Terrys-dad-sells-cocaine-in-bar.html

  159. yess limpar..

do you happen to know why your facesake the Great Verminator has his hand bandaged ..

(I hope its not because he’s still glass in preparation for the next Kumate)

Only Fabregas I disagree Sunderland is a must win game not chelsea..

  160. he’s still *punching* glass

  161. Desperately poor fare at the Bridge (soon to be Aldi@stamfordBridge.com) today. Both sides are powerful but pedestrian.

Darren (big game) Fletcher has started to believe his own hype. His, & his colleagues dissent was ridiculous.

As for Chelsea – a team of thuggishness & just when is Drogba`s funeral ? He was shot today, wasn`t he ?

  162. Notlager,

Not really much of a surprise it.

  163. http://www.oleole.com/wallpapers/arsenal/theverminator/mw68c8.asp

  164. Bobby Pires is playing a blinder tonight for Villareal, scored one, made one, Sevilla just equalised. 2-2 much better than Chelski – ManPoo.

  165. Much much better game than the earlier stinker!

  166. I have seen Sagna get a load of stick from Gooners. Some have said he has never got back to his 1st seasons levels of performance and consistency, while others have constantly bleated on about his crossing being “shite” and so on.

It is funny then that he has helped create 3 goals in the last 2 games from his crap crosses and has never let us down and his defending is fantastic.

Just wanted to get that off my freshly Brazilian-ed chest

  167. Sevilla-Villarreal has been a good game, but I’ve mostly been watching Lyon-Marseille which has been a real cracker, It’s now in injury time and it’s 5-5! :D

  168. “Terrific performance from everyone. A really good team performance, one of the best of the year. And I hope we can keep on scoring goals and winning games offcourse.but I’m still not yet convince on our defence this year.coz we’ve conceeding stupid late goals this season.

  169. Can I just say, I fuckin love Arsenal. Brightens up my week no end.

  170. Brazilian-ed chest?

  171. just think about it.. when we concede these late unimportant goals, teams believe they can score against us and they are having a go. If we never conceded they would just stop trying and park the bus. Now they are having a go which suits us on the counter….

  172. Smooth as a baby’s bum Polizi.

You just had to ask didnt you, little minx.

  173. Yes, Spike, I did have to ask, because I really have no idea what you are talking about.

  174. Oh right, sure, course.

A Brazilain wax, normally for the “back, sack and crack.”

Like you’ve never had one of those before?

  175. I hope you had it done for charity and not for some perverted enjoyment Spike.

  176. A little from column A and a little from column B.

  177. FUCK OFF Dupsffokcuf

  178. gooner2 crawl back under your rock you slimy twat.

  179. You made another friend there gooner2 I see. Good for you.

  180. what kept so long Dupsffokcuf?

  181. what kept you long?

    thats what i meant.

  182. AND if i am a twat then you must be a prick Rigtht?

  183. spike

Dupsffokcuf is my Enemy not my friend.coz the problem with him is that he thinks he knows everything.but I sometimes tell him that to stop fucking with me or else I start saying things that which he might not like.

  184. I keep watching Cesc’s goal from the Wolves game…how on earth did RvP do that?! So cool! The way he, in one touch, just steered the ball into Cesc’s path. It was so gentle and precise..

  185. Interesting comment By: ArsenalArseneArshavin on November 8, 2009 at 11:15 pm

“just think about it.. when we concede these late unimportant goals, teams believe they can score against us and they are having a go. If we never conceded they would just stop trying and park the bus. Now they are having a go which suits us on the counter….”

  186. Drogba was convulsing after the Evans’ kick to his rib cage. I thought last rite was needed to be performed. Then he got up and finished the game, making an all important foul on Brown when Terry’s headed the winner.

  187. This is fuc*** ridiculous. The season would be boring as hell, if Arsenal continue to perform like this. The difference between Arsenal and the rest of the teams is too big. Even Pool and Manu would be left far behind by December. And Chelsea by january. I suggest that Arsene, loan Rosicky, Nasri, Denilson, Bendtner and Theo out to Pool and Manu, to make the season a bit more interesting. I am sure the Doomer’s would agree with me, it’s been long that they’ve come out to play. Dear dooooomersss won’t you come out to playyy? Dear dooomers open up your eyes…..Dear doomers let me seeee you smileee….f***ers.

    ARSENALLLLLll RRRVVVVPPP!!!!!!

  188. Van Persie should have atleast scored. He beat the keeper twice and still couldnt slot it! All in all it was a great game despite the nerve wrecking first 20mins.

Was happy mancs lost though a draw would have been good for Arsenal.

    Two very long weeks ahead!!!Damn!

  189. RVP has scored 7 in the EPL this season. Just 4 short of his 11 that he scored last season. By the end of this season he surely, would have scored around 25 goals. And he has around 7 assists already too. It will be a stiff competition between RVP and Cesc for the players of the season title.

  190. @FL – Nerve wrecking first 20 mins? C’mon, it was fun – besides, how are we to know how good our defense is if we can’t weather a storm.

Wolves were stupid to come at us at that pace. For one, you can’t sustain it for 90 minutes, and secondly, it’s suicide to do that against Arsenal.

  191. Darius i agree they couldnt have gone 90 mins at that pace. My worry was they’d score in the 20mins and then park the bus. We did weather the storm though and i am very happy.
The goal we conceded it looked like Vermy got out of its way expecting Alumunia to get to it. Your thoughts?

  192. Knowing that we can be vulnerable would prevent hubris or breed complacency.

  193. About the goal – I think there was a communication problem between Vermaelen and Almunia as to who was claiming the ball.

I’m not too worried about it because I doubt one or both of them will allow that to happen again.

As for the first 20 minutes – I’m sure if Wolves would have scored, we would have unleashed a Blackburn on them. In previous seasons, I would have been worried about our ability to get round buses parked in front of our goal. Now I’m confident we can get the ball under the bus if needed.

  194. Spike,
Should we call you Smooth from now on? I didn’t know that was called a Brazilian wax. I should have thought you are too old for that kind of thing. How old are you? I realise that the ideal these days is for men to look like women, and for women to behave like men. Young men have their body-hair removed, wear earings, and even look like they are pregnant, while young women drink, curse, and belch like troopers. I can’t say these developments appeal to me.

  195. What’s wrong with drinking for women?

  196. Polizi- Women also piss in the alleyways when drunk.
Fergie has shot himself in the foot when he critcised the refs fitness . Chelsea were poor but all the decisions went their way. Its funny Fletcher blaming Wenger’s comment of him playing “anti-football” is the reason the ref gave the free kick against him. The debate now is can Arsenal break the 100 goal record?
The way Chelsea played yesterday I think we will hammer them this year ,We just need a full strength team.

  197. I haven’t been able to conduct a very wide survey, but the handful women in my life – and their friends – have all preferred some body hair, and a bit of body odour.

I’m not exactly old either. And I honestly don’t know if they were just humouring me, or if their views are more widespread among young people.

  198. And what do the handful of women in your life think about men appearing to be pregnant?

  199. Yeah, that’s not so popular *sobs*. The girl in Pulp Fiction said, “Pot bellies make a man look either oafish, or like a gorilla.”

  200. Is it only me or did anyone notice Cashley Cole’s blatant dive yesterday.

I guess his captain must have been preoccupied with the embarrassment of his dad’s drug dealing to bitch slap Cashley for bringing the game into disrepute. What was it John Terry proclaimed – “Us English lads are ‘onest and don’t dive, only them foreigners do that”.

  201. Sorry, Firstlady. I should have said, “With all due respect to women who drink like troopers…”

  202. We have not lost a game since man City rght?

Yet, I find quite it quite baffling that people can still moan and declare we will never win the league without an extra keeper or CB or midfielder.

I wonder what our boys need to do to convince them that we actually can! And indeed are actually more despaarate to win the trophies than the fans are to have something to brag about?

Just one or two games of decisions seeming to go against fergie and he is moaning this much? What we have had to cope with for years including the 07/08 season when the league was ours to win? apart from the loss of eduardo and rosicky to long term injuries

  203. The ref was poo in the Chav-Manc game but he was poor to both teams. Fletcher should have had a red, Evans should have had a red.

Man poo players keep surrounding the ref, showing no regard whatsoever to the arbiters.

I really honestly find that more distasteful than the diving the likes of Rooney also have in their bag of tricks.

  204. Poli, drinking and swearing in both men and women is not nice… How about that?

  205. Yesterday’s game was like watching a boxing match between a couple of those hopeless old British Heavyweights like Richard Dunn and Herbie Hide.

The two protagonists swing wildly at each other for round upon round, never landing a proper punch before grasping each other in a desperate attempt to not get hit or fall over from exhaustion.

A truly dispiriting sight. Boxing was consigned to the outer racges of the sporting public’s conciousness on the back of such ‘performers’. Football could go the same way or descend further into WWF madness if this type of game continues to be seen as a ‘battle between England’s top two teams’.

Thank God for Arsene and Arsenal.

  206. Team spirit in some instances it’s allowed. No one can tell me not to when we are 2-0 up and end up drawing.

One of us, I totally agree with you on 9.22. Give me a hairy man any day of the week!!

  207. Carletto confirmed Drogba is in quarantine this morning, given the deadly strain of Epilepsy he caught from Evans yesterday.

Priest’s been called in, just in case.

  208. Thank God indeed, Consolsbob. Well said.

  209. Ole

Let’s pray for Drogba’s soul; for the many dives he did during his playing life. Amen

  210. For a 6 ft 2 12-14 stone bloke – it’s pathetic for Drogba to resort to such antics.

  211. Alan Green on 5Live during the build-up to Man U V Chelsea remarked – “If player of the season were to be decided right now – then it would undoubtedly be awarded to Didier Drogba”.

Now I know Drogba has scored an impressive tally, but the quality of the goals and in his all-round performances, haven’t particularly shone out. There are a good few flukes in his collection so far, lot’s of shoulder-barging and confusing of Petr Cech at set-pieces – but not a lot of outstanding, brilliant football. Crosses falling accidentally into top corners spring to mind. It’s all strength and no finesse. Goals are goals I know, but it’s not very romantic to use that as the only criteria and he’s a pretty unfortunate role-model. In fact I’d go so far as to say he’s a big, spoilt tw8t.

For romance and outstandingly brilliant football – take a bow Arsenal Football Club. Personally I would say that Cesc is the player of the season so far, some of you may plump for Vermaelen – and with good reason. But I think we can all agree, player of the season so far, has to be one of us.

  212. “Poli, drinking and swearing in both men and women is not nice… How about that?”

I agree that drunkenness can never be good, and that habitual use of foul language is always unattractive. Nevertheless, these vices, for me, are more repellent in women than in men. The particular vices associated with one sex are always uglier when exhibited by the other. Wearing earrings is only a trivial vanity for women, but is ridiculous for men. When I first came to England, I was shocked by the drunkenness of the men; but with time I have become accustomed to it. During the same interval, drunkenness back home has also become more common. About ten years ago, just before Christmas, I first saw a group of drunk women tottering around a city-centre in England. It was an ugly sight. They were no longer young, and their huge thighs, ill-concealed by their short skirts, their thick makeup, and their raucous behaviour was enough to turn one’s stomach. Whenever I think of women getting drunk, my mind always returns to that foul first-impression. With time, perhaps societal progress will deprive even that image of its ability to shock.

  213. Imediately after he went down my first thought was “What a fucking drama queen, what an embarrassment!! After watching the replay i was like.. “mmmhhh, that must have hurt but still……

  214. Perhaps I should say, ‘one of ours’, to avoid getting One Of Us’ hopes up. Sorry OneofUs, you’re not player of the season – at least not yet.

  215. Well, Big Al has a handful of women. Is that not enough to qualify as a player?

  216. LimparAssist,

Drogba’s actually playing his best football this season. He’s scoring freely, and making assists.

I have to agree with Alan Green. I think RVP is the player who’s next best so far this season.

  217. Firstlady,

    what is allowed exactly?

Moaning emphatically in November that we will never win anything this season (which ends may next year) without an extra keeper, CB and Mid fielder?

Because we came from 2 -0 to draw 2-2 in one game out of 11? I think not.

By all means, moan that we should do better than throwing away a 2 – 0 lead because we can do better than that!
