The good thing about a Wednesday game is that the weekend is very soon upon us. The visit to Molineux, combined with Chelsea and Manchester United meeting at Stamford Bridge on Sunday is the opportunity to make ground on the top two, provided that Arsenal win, of course.
The players are rightly confident and taking more than a little pleasure in the thought that several hacks are squirming uncomfortably in the press box when the final whistle blows on another Arsenal victory in the Premier League. Thomas Vermaelen appeared to sum up the squad’s mood:
Maybe we were a little bit underestimated at the start of the season. A lot of people were talking about Arsenal not being good enough to be at the top, but we have done well so far in the Premier League and Champions League. We have some big games coming up including Chelsea [at home on 29 November]. If we have a good result against them, then it will be very big for us.
Far be it for me to disagree with the Belgian but the only big game to be concentrating on is Saturday. Get into the international break with wins and then start worrying about Chelsea, which if my somewhat vague memory is correct is preceded by a visit to Sunderland or a trip to the local swimming baths might save on travelling time since they were less waterlogged than the Stadium of Light last season.
Vermaelen believed it was easy to join Arsenal, little persuasion needed to get him to up sticks from Ajax. Hardly surprising that he thinks such thoughts as his move has gone extraordinarily well for him, 5 goals in 10 or so games is better than he or anyone expected. Such has been the confidence with which he and Gallas have been playing, Wenger is looking to keep the pairing intact for as long as possible, forgoing the rotation which has disrupted other sides this season:
I do not like to rotate too much in central defence because we are in a position where they have a good understanding and every point is vital so it’s not worth to take a gamble if I’m not forced to do it.
The key to rotation though is surely that the manager has confidence is those coming through to replace the rested player? Injuries are not rotating your squad but the management of a player’s condition is. The manager can only implement such a policy if he believes that the ‘reserve’ player is not going to have an adverse impact on the team for the match(es) in question.
Is Wenger’s stance influenced by that? For all of the positive comments he makes about Silvestre and Senderos – he is hardly likely to make negative ones in public at least – he cannot share the belief that either of them will ensure that no strength is lost from the middle of the defence. Equally, Gallas is playing as well, if not better, than he has ever done in an Arsenal shirt, certainly the most consistently, which is a big factor to consider.
When the time comes for one of Gallas or Vermaelen to be replaced, is Alex Song a more likely deputy or is Wenger hoping that the duo will remain fit through to the point when Johan Djourou is once more able to don the Arsenal shirt?
Awy from the pitch, Stan Kroenke has bought another 200 shares which has prompted Arsene to observe that a takeover is not inevitable. Given Stanley would have to buy 71 more to be forced to make a bid for shares. Equally, he would be obliged to offer £10.5k per share as this was the highest he paid for any purchases in the past two years. Whilst he may believe that is not a problem, it is £2k more than he paid to PHW for some shares.
It does explain why the chairman was so relaxed about Kroenke buying shares recently. Perhaps he knew that the incoming windfall would settle the drinks tab at the club.
’til Tomorrow.

1st!

I hope the team continues with the approach that the game at Molineux is not a straight forward one and maximum effort and concentration is needed. One or both of Chelsea and Manure will give way but we have to bag the 3 points.
The run of games that Diaby has got this season is truly helping him build the confidence and discipline needed in performing the midfield powerhouse role that Wenger has in mind for him. From what he has shown, I think its clear that a more disciplined and focussed Diaby is going to be a nightmare of a player for opponents with his box to box capability, strength and individual talent.
The squirming of the hacks is truly enjoyable – some are even finding it painful to say Arsenal are playing well, let alone admitting that we’re playing the best football in the EPL and the Champions league.

YW, Well written.
I think much our game involves a lot about understanding your team mates in terms of movement and intentions off the ball and all that so you can understand why the less changes in personnel, the better.
At the back, more than anywhere else, mistakes can be very harshly punished and so much more, the mor cnsistent the back is the better.
If need be am sure senderos and silvestre will step up if needs be that one of Gallas or Tommy V has to drop- injuries, suspensions, any other reason; they are well rested having much played much in the season with the CC providing match practices now and again.
so for now, do not change a winning team

Are we playing better than Chelsea right now? I haven’t watched them so I couldn’t say, but their results have been pretty impressive, and I expect them to steamroller a poor United side on the weekend as well.
Our game against them at the end of the month is going to be massive, probably 1st vs 2nd in the league by then. Wolves and Sunderland to deal with first though, neither will be easy away from home.

I wonder YW if it isn’t more about the position rather than the back up personnel? CB partnerships are vital and it’s this he doesn’t want to break. He said he was about to rest Clichy before the injury and is clearly rotating Ebs and Bc almost every other game so has no aversion to defensive rotation just central defensive rotation.
Who knows? The point is any of the big teams would miss their first choice centre backs, no one can have a Vermaelen on the bench – why would he sit there?

Arsenal unfortunately will always be underated till we win a trophy. Thats all that most people care about. But we win and do it with style. Theres a philosophy that Arsene has instilled the club and I hope it will long continue. I dont care about winning and playing boring at the same time. We can win beautifully. I watch Arsenal for entertainment, and for sheer entertainment you cant do better.

Are you surrounded by your fortune (dunelike banks of sparkling gold doubloons cascading from salty wooden chests), or have you stashed them in some sort of rudimentary vault in the rock wall?
Anyway, I’ve long been an admirer of your talents and wholeheartedly agree with you on the philosophy of aesthetics at Arsenal.

Hey gang…a question.
Much as I like to see the Mancs get thrashed…what result is actually better for us?
Chelsea win and, ManU begin an epic fade leaving us and Chelsea in a two horse race…
or
ManU win, putting all three teams right on top of each other points wise. Maybe a loss puts the wobbles into Chels but it risks a boost in confidence in the Manc camp.
Having a game in hand we potentially get out in front earlier in the season and try to run away with it…although in the first scenario the game in hand means Chels an Arsenal could open a significant gap on the rest of the field by Dec.
Thoughts?

By: The Jam on November 6, 2009

Draw sounds good. We’ll top the table if/when we win our game in hand. Doubt it’ll be a draw though. Chelsea may have the upper hand I feel. Utd lack the creativity they used to have. They weren’t exactly rolling all over Blackburn last week. Chelsea on the other hand seem to be flying. They’re definitely the bigger threat.

i think that manure are dangerous because they play as awful as they do and still get results.
Some argue that thats the sign of a quality team. I disagree. The fact is that man u only ever play attractive football when they play us.
I think its more important that damage is done to man u before they whip the chequebook out in jan. Chelsea will fade of their own accord.
On vermaelen, i dont think he’s looking too far ahead at all. The statment dosent suggest an immenent lapse in concentration in the games running up, more the fact that is an important game pivotal and symbolic of this teams intent.

I’m all for Chelsea battering Manure and making them look bad. Manure are weak at the moment and the faster their out of the picture the better.
Chelsea will lose points to us and to Man City before mid December and we should be spear heading the EPL by January time.
Injuries, suspensions and ACN duties will catch up with Chelsea and we’re better equipped to deal with this better than they are. Their suspension from buying players in the transfer window has been set aside until the new year so they’re likely to flash the cash in January for Aguerro or even Torez as they won’t be able to bring in players in the summer of 2010..
The main thing is for us to focus on winning our games and the table will correct itself.

Dupsffokcuf.
The dilemma Chelsea have is that no player of substance is available in January. They’ll pull out the cheque book but who can they really buy. For those who are available, they’ll have to pay obscene Rinaldo-esque transfer fees. Pushing for the band to be suspended might actually work against them long term.

That’s right about Man City. I think if they’re still in the top 4 come January, they’ll probably try to spend like mad to make sure they stay there.
But Man City also has a big problem as they still don’t have the capital to attract world class players. As someone described their transfer policy in the last two windows – “Man City have gone for the brides but they’ve only ended up with bridesmaids”.
They have had 1 win in 6 games and 4 consecutive draws. That’s not even a record you would suggest for a team serious in challenging.
I think the Sheikhs will get rid of Mark Hughes and install a proper galactico type manager like Mourinho to move them to the next level. It’s only a matter of time.
Also in the champions league, it’s a real possibility that both Real Madrid and Barcelona won’t make the knockout rounds with other casualties like Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Real will be spinning after spending over £290 million and not even being able to get past the heats.
By: Darius Stone on November 6, 2009

Also January signings can be a risk in terms of their ability to settle quickly in a new league and country. Arshavin was one, but he was highly motivated to join Arsenal. I’m not sure Aguero is in the same position.

Fun gunner.
I get the sense that Man City have been living on the adrenaline of mega bucks investment and its now fading away. Watching their last two games against Villa and Birmingham, you can clearly see 11 individuals playing with a silo mentality but its hard to see a team ethic. It’s only a matter of time before ego takes over in the dressing room.
Their bigger problem is that the media has over-hyped and sensationalized their new found fame and fortune that its hard for them to grow organically without undue pressure. They’re living in a goldfish bowl right now.
Saying that, they still have shorter odds than Liverpool to win the premiership. And as for Arsenal, a team that had been written off pre-season not to even make it in the top 4, our odds to win the EPl have shortened from an average of 16:1 pre season to 7:2 – and this will shorten after the Chelski Manure game and after we also play Chelski.

My interest in Carlos and Craig verges on the maternal and is simply that of an Arsenalist. It’s just quite exciting to see someone who I didn’t seem to be one of the stars of the fabulous double-winning youth side, come to the fore like this.

Darius,
I would add that their own management has also over-hyped and sensationalized their new found fame and fortune, not to mention other managers around the league. When your own boss, and other bosses, are hyping you and you don’t perform at the level you’ve been told you are at the heads start dropping and the legs don’t work so quickly.
Thinking about the ACN the run of games Diaby is getting now will stand him in great stead during January. We will need his presence then when the “Star of Song” is on duty down South.

I think its now imperative that Diaby gets more play time, especially in the absence of Denilson. I suspect that during the ACN, Wenger will go with Cesc Nasri and Diaby or Cesc Denilson and Diaby if Nasri is playing up front.
2 of the goals against AZ started with Diaby winning the ball and doing the basics of moving it along to another team-mate. He was at the end of the 4th goal which is undoubtedly a contender for goal of the month. That box to box presence is invaluable and if Diaby can grow into that role, woe betide any team that will give him space. He’s not there yet, but I’m very comfortable that he’ll get there.
PS: I’m still working on the electric shock thingy to stop the bed being used as a bouncy castle. It’s coming with booby trap extensions wired to the bedroom door to stop the brats running in and shouting when I’m having a lie in or taking care of some business with the missus. Only morons come to this conclusion that up and coming players are immediately able to replace their favourite scapegoats such as Denilson and Diaby.
Their judgement is wrong on several counts.
Firstly, one game is not enough to judge a player. Eastmond did very well, granted, but how would he fare in the rough and tumble against one of the dirtier teams in the premiership ?
Secondly, on what basis is Eastmond supposedly better than Denilson ? Hogwash. It can’t be ball rentention, stamina, passing or interceptions.
Thirdly, players that are ready at 18 or 19 come along once every 10 years. Fabregas was, Gerrard was, Rooney was. But these players are truly exceptional. Other players take longer to adapt and form, but nevertheless still become indispensable to the team over team. Coquelin, Eastmond and co, unless they are as good as Fabgreas, will not waltz into the first team and replace Denilson, Song and Diaby who have 3 to 4 years tutelage and development under their belts.

I’d like to respond to an earlier comment made by FunGunner. “Pz,” she said, “is two-timing TV with Barazite.” I deny that allegation. I am very fond of Nacer, and I would never hurt him, and jeopardise our relationship, by getting involved with someone else. It is true that I was momentarily attracted to Thomas Vermaelen, but it was in fact FunGunner who brought me to my senses. As well as claiming Thomas for herself, she refered to me by the derogatory epithet of Mister Greedy, thereby making me conscious that I was being controlled by my animal passions rather than by my authentic self. At first, it is true, it was Nacer’s elegant figure and pretty face that caught my eye; but during the time we have known one another, our relationship has sunk far deeper roots, and we now enjoy a union, loving yet chaste, of which only my good friend Pietro Bembo could give an adequate account.

First of all the design is a carbon copy of the Emirates with its curvy line and I can’t help thinking they are going to embarrass themselves again and we can all laugh.

An article about Cesc in Sport, the Barcelona equivalent of Pravda, that doesn’t suggest that he wants to go play for Barca. Pure praise:
I won’t translate it, but you can get some gist of what it says from google translator or babelfish or the like.
Y hoy vuelven a tenerlo.

The last thing we should want is a Chelsea win. The best result would be a Man U upset, although a draw would be fine too.
For those saying how much Chelsea will miss their African players in January, don’t forget they have a suspiciously (ok, call me paranoid) easy schedule for the entire month. They should cruise through January, and all their key players will be back in time for the February clash with us.
It will be a Chelsea-Arsenal fight. I said before the season that Chelsea will shade it with Arsenal coming second. With a cup trophy to go alongside a huge leap into a top 2 place, the momentum will mean that it’s more likely we will win the league next season, but we’re still in with a great chance this season.
I’d be delighted if we took it this year, but Chelsea have such an easy January, that they will be in good shape coming into the home stretch.
My biggest concern is that somehow they can repair the surface at Wembley as that will be a bigger obstacle than the teams we might face. I’m convinced that even without Arshavin we could have beaten Chelsea on a truer surface but the lumps favoured their lumpy style.
Wolves 0, Arsenal 2 (Song or Gibbs 36, Van Persie 62)

@ 1 loose cannon: Haha, Spurs haven’t got anything to boast about so they’re grasping at straws. I’ll bet they’re gonna say their new training ground’s gonna be better London Colney.
