Liverpool arrive at The Emirates this evening for a Carling Cup fixture that relieves the necessity to gaze into the aftermath of Upton Park. It is the opportunity for younger players to renew their acquaintance with a starting place and unusually for Wenger, injured first team ‘regulars’ to gain some much needed match sharpness.
Of course, injuries have prevented Wenger from picking the side that he would like to, it just wouldn’t be Arsenal otherwise. Traore misses out as does Jack Wilshere, who will perhaps be the most disappointing absentee. Still, I am sure that the returning Fabianski, Nasri, Eduardo and Bendtner will try to make up for that.
The Pole is in line to provide competition to Mannone and Almunia according to Wenger. Goalkeepers seem to vex more than most positions with the overhyped “world-class” prefix bandied around, forgetting that most title-winning sides make do with a decent first choice goalkeeper. The enhancements made to the balls these days are designed to favour outfield players whilst any goalkeeper is made to look distinctly average at times. The key thing is to minimise the number of occasions where that arises.
Tonight’s cast is a veritable riches for Arsene to choose from. The defence will largely pick itself with Kerrea Gilbert, Silvestre, Senderos and Kieron Gibbs expected to fill those spots. A midfield built around Samir Nasri should be expected with the Frenchman looking to gain more match sharpness ahead of this weekend’s derby with Tottenham. Alongside him will no doubt be Aaron Ramsey but then Wenger has to start looking at his options.
It would be a chance for Fran Merida to shine although the question would become about width since the three of them prefer to play narrower. That said, Nasri shone when in the wide attacking position so perhaps could do the same job tonight. Whether that would be the case when he returns to the major tournaments remains to be seen, Wenger arguing that Nasri would find it hard to displace Arshavin.
Up front, Bendtner and Eduardo will be vying for a place alongside Watt and Vela. It would be no surprise if Wenger started with both the more senior duo, the Dane’s experience on the right side of attack would leave Eduardo in the centre and Vela on the left.
Such a line-up would be hard on those who contributed to the win over West Brom in the last round but it is more important in the short term that those lacking match fitness get more playing time. Having a bench that includes Watt, Coquelin and Randall gives options for experience to be gained when tiredness kicks in, especially if extra-time looms. A win is a good morale booster for the whole squad and puts another nail in the coffin that this squad has little or no depth. Each season where more games are played in this competition puts those involved a step closer to being ready for the Premier and Champions Leagues. Certainly though each season brings more evidence that Arsenal are streets ahead of the rest of top four in pursuing a sustained and productive youth academy.
Away from the pitch, Stan Kroenke used his Asda credit card to buy some shares, choosing to pay the minimum monthly payment rather than all in one go no doubt. Whilst he edges closer to the takeover threshold, the silence will become even more deafening about his intentions for the club. With a bit of luck both he and Usmanov will realise that any takeover should happen once the season is over and after Arsene has done his shopping, lest anyone get the idea that Arsenal are loaded. Sometimes, the poverty-stricken chord repeated in the media can work in Wenger’s favour.
Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

So whats the team for tonight looking like?
I would like to see…
Fab
Eboue Senderos Silvestre Gibbs
Ramsey Coquelin Merida
nasri Eduardo/Nik vela
I think Merida has to play, if he doesn’t get a game tonight he will have to start wondering what he has to do, a star of the u20’s recently, going really well in the reserves, naturally left footed, more creative from midfield than nasri or ramsey.
I think Nasri is skillful and attacking enough to play in the front three and he will have less rough and tumble to contend with there so a gentler introduction that going back into midfield. But that would be a ludicously small front line, so mabe Nik will get a game with Eddy dropping out.
I would like to see Eboue in for some extra experience at the back as he is in good form as a RB and it might stop AW playing him at RW against the spuds. But I expect AW to play Gilbert.

I am disappointed that fabianski has recovered so soon. I was hoping for sczerpsny to get a chance tonight, I like the look of the lad he has been getting good reviews from the people who have seen him and I have to admit he does look the part to be groomed as our LONG TERM goalkeeper.
From the little I have seen of him he looks to have an assured demeanor and certainly has the PRESENCE required to be a top class GK standing at 1.95 metres. It would have been great to see how he measures up under real match pressure.
Sad, but I really wouldnt be disappointed if fabianski picks up another injury to make way for skrtsly because quite frankly fabianski is a waste of time and if someone like skqrtcy can cement his place and keep fabianski out it will be good for the team.
So disappointed that wilshere is out, but I really want to see bartley, ayling or miguel in action. Its time to give these lads a chance looking to the future instead of the lame ducks senderos and ex man utd 4th(or was it 5th?) choice.
All said, I am really looking forward to the game and I suspect that liverpool will put a strong team out and tonight will be the end of our carling cup adventure for this season.
But I am the eternal optimist and with a bit of luck, Who knows?
Cheers all!!

Arsenal.com have decided they’re not content with marking Wenger’s 13 years in charge, and then his 60th (none of which our great manager wanted to celebrate), they’ve found the 3rd milestone in 3 weeks that they want to celebrate. Apparently, Wenger’s 750th game in charge is tonight.

I have doubts whether SK will actually bid for the club at this moment in time. There are some rules regarding how much he has to pay for the shares if he decides to bid for the club. At the moment, he is paying a lot higher than the average selling price per share and might therefore wait until the expiry of the twelve month period before bidding.

Stadium design is really interesting. There is no doubt that the arena at the Arsenal Stadium is nigh on perfect. The stadium has been built from the centre-spot outwards and so maximum consideration has been given to the playing surface. The seating areas are very, very good given the height constraints imposed by the Islington Planning Department. Tiers are better in terms of closeness to the pitch and the back of a stand with a single tier would be miles away. They have that problem at Anfield…probably one of the reasons they want another stadium. AW gave careful consideration to the pitch and seating areas so not surprising that it is spot on.
The real problem with the Arsenal Stadium is the positioning and behaviour of club level supporters. If they sat in their seats as per DB10’s testimonial then it is no problem…but club level lead the way in non- attendance, arriving late and leaving early. This could be re-arranged easily. Interestingly the Spuds appear to have fallen for this club level thing too..even worse because they have to add more club level seats in the other stands to make up for the lack of them at one end. All about income really.
As for people leaving early…much worse when happens in a single level stand than one with tiers…much worse.
The really impressive aspect of the Arsenal Stadium was project management. It was world-class and put Wembley to shame.
The Arsenal Stadium is a fantastic stadium. It needs the finishing touches to be a supporters stadium.

Tonight is a very good test for whatever team Wenger sends out to play Liverpool.
It’s hard to predict how the game will go, suffice to say that it depends on which Liverpool turns up. Benitez has a dilemma in that he doesn’t have the luxury of playing a full strength side lest they pick up more injuries, or more realistically, they get embarrassed by a rampant Arsenal second string.
This is a game for all the fringe players at Arsenal to put themselves in the shop window and show the manager and the fans alike what they’re made of. For that reason only, I think Arsenal will be up for it.

Sorry Frank, I know we are both Woolwich brothers who believe our fans to be complete wastes of space, I must disagree with you.
The stadium is beautifull, but the terraces are too far away from the pitch, the are also not steep enough, the aqcoustics of the roof are not designed to keep the noise within the ground, and it has zero character.
It blows as a football venue

No supporters crossed the river with the club from Woolwich to Highbury. Norris bought the club for nothing because it had no income, no supporters. He created a new club, with a new name which became famous for innovation.
Lady Nina may yet prove to be a key figure in the future of the club. Her husband’s family have no association with Woolwich Arsenal…only Arsenal….only Arsenal….Arsenal.

First Lady,
No, Frank says it was a different club in Woolwich, which means he’s saying Arsenal FC was founded as recently as 1913, not even a hundred years old.
Our Woolwich fathers who we owe so much will be turning in there graves. Talk about standing on the shoulders of giants.
By: James on October 28, 2009

Well, the 125 year anniversary is coming up soon. It will be interesting to see if the Club recognises its founding members in Woolwich, or if it shuns them into the background like an Illigitimate, ugly child who they are ashamed of, like Frank has.
By: James on October 28, 2009

The club in its current incarnation ‘The Arsenal’ really came about in 1914. The move to Highbury in the previous year was the start of a new club. The first shoots started to show when we were promoted to the First Division in 1919 which must have pissed you off, James, because that is the beginning of the ‘history’ between us. It would have happened sooner but the Great War intervened. The next major milestone in the creation of this fantastic club was the appointment in 1925 of Herbert Chapman. The transformation was complete.

Liverpool fan’s have an interesting attitude to the Carling Cup..They see it as an irrelevant thing but beating Arsenal would be a nice thing.
I’ve never seen it that way, and I’m not sure if you guys do either. I think its hugely important and I really look forward to these matches. We get to see our youngish lads playing dazzling football in a relatively relaxed atmosphere (Woe betide anyone who gives them grief in the event that things don’t go well for them!) and it connects supporters to squad members that we normally wouldn’t see very often.
Maybe Liverpool don’t have a strong youth system? I thought they did. Some of their reactions towards tonights match were a bit surprising. I like how their website posted up a little “facts about Arsenal and Arsene” in their match preview. Nice touch.

Abid. I’ve just read the preview of the match from the Liverpool website. Really interesting presentation about Arsenal and Wenger in particular. It does give a different prerspective to match previews.
For me, the article highlights the glaring difference between Arsenal’s youth development policy and that of other clubs. It’s pretty much clear to see that since Gerrard and Carragher were introduced to the Liverpool first team, very few if any recruits have been successful in joining the first team.
If we’re to be as anal as James and Frank, the Liverpool researchers also left out one factual piece of info. Apart from having played at the Emirates, Highbury, Wembley (between 1998 and 2000 for European home ties), The Manor ground and InVictor stadium, the Arsenal also played some of its early non association games on Plumstead common (clearly in the days we were broke before the then sugar daddy Norris bought the club).

Darius, good point about no places for youth in Liverpool midfield. But these days, i think a good team spirit is essential. Everyone playing for the team and prepared to sit some out for the benefit of the team. How realistic is that ?, im not sure. Of course players want to play every game. I guess there are two sides of the coin here. On the one hand we are so lucky to have such quality right across the middle and all relativly young, on the other hand can we keep them all. I heard someone on tv saying that the days of players staying with one club is as far back as James hair line.

Boomer. The thing is that in today’s football, any team seriously challenging for all 4 cups will play anything near 60 games or more if successful.
Inevitably, there’ll be suspensions, injuries, cases of fatigue, etc, that suggest that having a strong squad is a better approach to a season than depending on certain players to bring out the magic. Such players (Fabregas or Arshavin if you think of Arsenal) will not be able to deliver on every match – so it’s important that the pool of talent is a strong one in the squad. There’s enough matches to go around and players will get their turn.
If the young up coming players are patient, they will get their opportunity to shine and if they take this opportunity, then they can only do themselves some good. Mannone is a classic example in that even after Almunia came back, Mannone has managed to convince Wenger to try him out for two top flight matches – we’ll wait to see who’s in goal against the spuds on Saturday.
Not everyone from our crop of players will make it, but it’s through high pressure games like today’s against Liverpool that you get a sense of who is likely to make it. As much as the Carling cup is enjoyable, playing teams that don’t offer serious compettition does provide a false sense of hope. For some reason, I would suggest that playing the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea or Manu Utd youth teams – or even teams like Villa or Tottenham, provide a more realistic test for this young Arsenal team.
The youth team players also know that if and when they do get knocked out of the Carling cup, there’s a stream of Premiership and Championship managers waiting in line with a ticket outside Wenger’s office ready to beg for the players to be loaned out.

By: James on October 28, 2009

No. Let us not draw a line under this. Highbury is the home of footbal. The current Arsenal Stadium will be the home of football. There is nothing remarkable about Woolwich (it was in fact Charlton) or Plumstead…could have been any other failing club in the early days of the football league. But Norris and Highbury…what a difference…innovation in abundance…everywhere you look. Arsenal was the brainchild of one man and AW has enabled us to rekindle all of the wonders of that original incarnation.
By: Frank on October 28, 2009

That doesn’t change the fact that we were founded in Woolwich. Norris bought the club, he didnt start his own club did he.

No. Norris created ‘The Arsenal’ at Highbury. There is a continuous line of support from that point on. There is no continuous line of support from the Dial Square, Royal Arsenal or Woolwich Arsenal to Arsenal. That is just sentimental nonsense. In fact supporters in the original area support Charlton.
Norris built it all in Highbury and the people in the surrounding area, Islington, Camden, Hackney… responded. The home of football was born. European football was born. Footballing superstars were born. Radio and then TV commentaries were born.
Tonight we will continue in that tradition.
….Arsenal…..

Now that radio and TV commentaries have become so mutated and ugly, I expect Arsenal to be in the vanguard of that change too.

The point is that Arsenal are unique in that we have a history of being modern. A history of being ahead of the game. Our real tradition is as an innovative football club. None of the other fuckers have noticed.

I am very excited now and busting to get out of work early for a few pre-match beers. I am taking a mate of mine for his first visit to The New Home Of Football – in return for him having taken me to his ground, Hillsborough last year. I’m thinking tonight’s entertainment could well surpass that blustery 2-1 defeat for Wednesday at the hands of Fulham in the cup last year.
Does bring back fond memories of a favourite Sheffield terrace cry though: “Tackle Baahhl!” they shout despairingly, and “Pass Baaahll!”, like big northern sealions with breathing difficulties.

What a goal by Merida!!! Not the last, for sure.
Ramsey, Nasri and Merida look incredible in the midfield, although they won’t play much defense, so we’ll have to outscore the scousers.

Note the BBC Sport bias on how they described the first 2 goals. Both excellent goals but….
Fran Merida finds the net with a goal from just outside the area to the top right corner of the goal. Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool.

Well done CC boys. Silvestre did ok , Was impressed by Gilbert during second half, Eastmond was outstanding, that Merida goal reminded me so much of Torres last Saturday.Nice moves Nasri, Gibbs was fantastic, I know Ramsey took MOTM but he reminded me alil bit of Diaby especially during 2nd half, just my opinion.
Liverpool didnt sit back which was a good thing coz that made the game more entertaining. Now i understand why Curling cup tickets were sold out! Our boys were sublime.
By: Firstlady on October 29, 2009

Great performance by the many young and few old heads.
So glad to see Nasri back for the 90 minutes and doing pretty good for someone who’s been out for awhile.
My surprise of the day was Eastmond, very good performance for the young lad. Promising.
And promising future for Arsenal. If we managed to keep most of these players, imagine how strong our bench would be in two years or even less.
By: Gunner4Ever on October 29, 2009

Merida actually reminds me of a left footed Bobby Pires … and I think he was playing on the left wing, cutting in a la Pires for most of the game.
Nasri was fantastic and his skills are amazing, Ramsey was very assured, and NB worked incredibly hard most of the game.
I thought liverpool were pretty good as well — just not as good as us.

Sorry Ca Gooner. I remember Bobby Pires to be right footed. Or do you mean that Merida is a left footed version of (the right-footed) Pires?
By: Luke on October 29, 2009

Craig Eastmond is a good player. That much we already know. But we did pay for the fact that he was making his debut. For the Liverpool goal he was well out of position. Understandable.
I was less impressed with his midfield colleagues in Ramsey & Merida who I felt were rather lazy. Ramsey got MOTM from Sky, I’m told, but he was back to his wanting to always play the pass that looks best on the highlights package. Merida was simply offering very little protection to poor Gibbs who then had a shaky start for this reason.
The person who surprised me was Kerrea Gilbert who shut Babel out when I thought he might struggle. He did have his moments of struggling with positioning but he’ll still get a 7 from me.
Eduardo gave Skrtel a torrid time. But that was well to be expected. And how was that for a finish from Bendtner who got a lot of stick.
Silvestre was immense. Initially I thought, well he’s only playing Ngog & Voronin. But when Aquilani & Benayoun came on we really saw how much he took responsibility and made it all happen.
Fabianski showed why he’s our most dominant keeper (in the air). His decision-making is where he has to improve, but that’ll come from experience unless he’s really thik which he isn’t.
All said and done, Liverpool played very well, as did we. It would have been more comfortable for us if the central midfield had offered better cover.
