Midfield Is Strong Enough So Forget Transfer Tales

The transfer window is but two months away and with Chelsea hoping to pull a Sion to get out of their avaricious predicament, the press has started to put two and two together, coming up with another group of players to add to the already voluminous Arsenal midfield. A Daily Star story about Arsenal looking at Lorik Cana has picked up speed despite the fact that the rag failed to register that the player signed for Sunderland in the summer. Cana had a trial arranged with Arsenal when he was 16 but failed to clear customs at Heathrow when he arrived, presumably the fear being that he would abscond if he failed to make the grade. Wenger apparently kept in contact with the player but never pursued his interest in signing him further.

The midfield is exceptionally well-stock if suffering through injury. The African Cup of Nations is going to have nowhere near the impact that it has in previous seasons, the number of first team squad players eligible for the tournament is down. Even so, Song will be a big loss but Denilson can come in to replace him. Arsene may decide to dip into the market and bring in some cover on a short term basis hence the Vieira stories which surfaced in the summer. There is no necessity for Arsene to do so; the experience gained by the squad is often masked by their age. To put some sort of context on this, if the squad remained at Arsenal, they would dominate the list of all-time appearances such is the level they have reached now.

Wenger leaves implications hanging in the air at times though with other positions. It is clear he is looking at strengthening the centre of the defence, the injury suffered by Djourou a big blow in that respect. Ahead of tomorrow’s game, he added almost in passing, that Senderos would be available for the squad. The Swiss international is the forgotten man in terms of first team football, the Carling Cup squad at the moment in his search for club football. He should however take heart from the paths trodden by several of the squad. song and Eboue had long battles to win people over and did so. Almunia likewise. None left the club on loan with the obvious intention of being sold, Song was always coming back from Charlton Athletic no matter how that spell turned out. That Wenger admitted to strongly considering re-signing Matthew Upson shows that leaving the club is no barrier to being reconsidered in the future.

The manager referred to the ‘crisis‘ at Liverpool, drawing parallels with the 2008-09 season for Arsenal. Even if they beat United tomorrow, it will require a Herculean effort on the players part to draw Liverpool into the title race rather than looking on from the sidelines. The current snaffling of shares by Stan Kroenke is feeding a drip-drip of stories about takeovers, something that will not go away until the issue is resolved one way or the other. The template on how not to takeover a club is Liverpool, internecine sniping by the owners driving fans to protest. Whether the American wants to follow the Glazer’s path to excessive borrowing to buy the club may in part be defined by the licensing process that UEFA and FIFA put in place, ostensibly to control English clubs and their excesses.

Sepp Blatter is meddling in the composition of the squads which according to reports this week is going to be nowhere near as draconian as first portrayed with Fabregas, Clichy, Eboue and Denilson all likely to be considered English for their purposes. Such rulings seem to make a mockery of UEFAs intention to curb youth transfers, rendering them almost essential rather than enhancing the quality of native players. If the financial controls being effected are equally obscure, nothing will really stop Kroenke or Usmanov from loading debt onto Arsenal should they become sole owner of the club. What impact that will have is hard to digest without proper details of their plans.

For Arsene, he has made it clear to both of them that interfering on the playing side is a total no-no. It is easy to say that on paper and there is no suggestion that either will simply buy players that the manager does not want. However, Abramovich has done so at Chelsea, to a hugely detrimental cost financially and in his relationship with an ego larger than the Russian’s bank balance. Can either of Arsenal’s suitors afford to make such a basic error?

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Great blog, as ever, YW.

Shout out to Henri Lansbury. It was murder he wrote against Wednesday last night!

Man, I’ve been waiting to do that for ages.

  2. .

  3. I was one of those Gooners who thought A|W would sign a midfielder and a CB. I stilol think he may sign a central defender come Jan 2010, especially given the length of Djourou’s absence.

  4. “The most beautiful football isn’t here, but at Barcelona,” Arshavin told Russian website Bobsoccer. “But after them, perhaps Arsenal.

“We are probably missing two top players.”

Moving to London may not have been difficult on the pitch, but off it Arshavin feels that he has done well not announce every problem that began with the 50 per cent tax bracket.

“On one hand I love it here. On the other, I haven’t said anything about the difficulties,” he continued.

“In Spain, for example, everything seems easier. England, in general, is different from many European countries, in terms of lifestyle and mentality.

is it just me or arshavin doesnt look 2 happy in arsenal . all his barca talks are really getting to piss me off.

i wouldnt be suprised if he is trying to force barca to bid for him. Wenger should do something bout arshavin, he should shut his mouth.

  5. i think he is using arsenal as a transistion to braca, to prove to them that he can do it on the big stage

  6. I’m looking forward to seeing quality English/British players replacing the average foreign players in the team.

    Lansbury> Denilson

    Gilbert/Eastmond>Eboue

    Bartley/Ayling>Senderos/Sylvestre

  7. I agree with spike, we do need additions. With regard to the midfield being full, this is true ONLY in the attacking positions, the defensive position is still a problem.

I disagree with yogi, Denilson is certainly NOT the answer, he could fill in on a 5 man midfield but not as a partner for cesc. When song leaves for the ANC there are simply no natural players for that defensive midfield position. I do hope arsene will bring in the cover.

We need another CB to compliment the two that we have, we are still very much vulnerable to organised ling ball tactics and direct methods.

But if Arsene is short on cash, I think we will have to take that CHANCE and depend on luck going our way in terms of injuries to gallas and vermaelen during the season.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow, Ahh …. and I see zola is making noises about not changing his attacking style even against us, which basically means he is very keen to get fired.

Their only chance of winning tomorrow is to defend well and be tight, but it seems zola is raring to commit suicide which is well and good for us. If we play well and zola keeps his promise we should have the 3 points.

    4-2 to the arsenal!!

    Cheers all!!

  8. Another thought to ponder about.

Youngsters playing for arsenal reserves and youth team are being groomed into becoming a good footballers as well as having good footballing acumen. They also believe that if they are good enough they will play for arsenal.

But the kind of oppertunity that fabregas, denilson and many others had when wenger virtually dismantled his entire first team over a period 2 – 3 year, is unlikely to happen again.

Then how many kids will get the chance to participate. Like already so much competition is there for the midfield slot. Coqulein, Thomas and others are already getting ready to stake a claim in the next 2 seasons while randall lansbury ,merida and others are still on the sideline.

Can’t see any logical end to this. We will just have to let many good players leave. Just hope we manage to latch on to the better ones and get good money from the ones that leave.

  9. Since Denilson filled that position brilliantly last season, it is a mathematical certainty that he is precisely the answer.

  10. Good blog today as always, sir.

  11. man, arshavin is getting to my nerves..he has to shut his goab up….

moving on, lansbury was awesome yest against sheffield wed…the touch, the vision etc were top class…such players should replace the likes of diaby

  12. No need at all to buy!

Players to fill the “DM” position for a month in a 4-3-3 when Song’s @ the ANC:

    Denilson
    Nasri
    Coquelin
    Eboue
    Ramsey
    Djourou
    Merida

(rotate between 2 or 3 of them)

  13. The fact that Wenger has to scrap the bottom of the barrel and came up with Diaby is prove enough that we need to get a midfielder in January!!

  14. Ooops I forgot Diaby!

  15. we want trophis and signings now so we can go brag to our workmates that we won something. dont you guys understand? Doesnt wenger understand? No one cares where the money comes from or wheter we play beautiful or not. No one cares what attitude the players got aslong as we win. Or that is what the attitued of arsenal fans sound like nowadays.

  16. ooh and i forgot..
moan, moan, moan ….moan, moan ,moan and a bit more.. moan, moan, moan midfield is crap, moan moan moan moan moan, Wenger is crap.moan moan moan. trophys trophys trophys,. moan moan moan.. oh and moan moan MOAN..
thank you for listening. I never get tired of moaning me. Its just how i am.

  17. and did i mention i know best to, and am always right :p should have been arsenal manager me. not Arsene. Hes shiiit compared to me.

  18. I dont think Wenger will buy for DM. We have Diaby, Denilson and Cesc who can play together. I am also impressed by Rambo who can fill in if required.

The physical power of Diaby in the one on ones is impressive and in 3 months, I think he will be a monster.

Shava has been talking yes, but I dont think that it is to go to Barca. The guy is just straight-forward and honest. He talks what is on his mind without any false formality and I prefer it like that. Its better that he tells he nearly signed for Spurs rather than tell me he loves Arsenal and then sign for Barca of City.

He is also maybe doing this to cement his rank in the dressing room. He is as big as any star in the team and he has to be respected for that, he belongs to Arsenal too.

If we fans start to raise questions of him, he is not a guy who will take the shit and stay, so lets side by him.

  19. My comments not published?

  20. “The fact that Wenger has to scrap the bottom of the barrel and came up with Diaby is prove enough that we need to get a midfielder in January”

stop being an arm chair expert and dissing our own players, ffs.

The boys been playin well of late and is a going to get better with support. Jus like song, denilson, walcott, eboue, toure and the gez who now plays for man city improved after some difficult days.

they all took stick for supposedly not being good enuff by arm chair experts like you.

what part of the bottom of the toilet do fans like you come from?

have a day off and get behind the team!

  21. I sometimes think that journalists are under so much pressure to fill editorial space and a blood thirsty 24 hour news cycle that most of their articles are written under duress.

They inevitably have to concoct and rehash anything that smells like a rumour or story in order to get things going lest they put their mortgage at risk. Only yesterday I read a business as usual Cesc to Barca story that was an exact copy of one printed less than two weeks ago. No new information and the same rehashed lies and conjecture. Sensational headlines like “Arshavin prefers Tottenham” and “Barcelona give up on January target Robin Van Persie” are flushed around in desperation and hope that they will draw readers.

The situation is made more acute by the fact that the print media is an endangered species as advertisers turn to the cheaper worldwide web as their preferred medium to reach the masses. Perhaps the only way to sell conventional newspapers is to shock the public, and a story about Wenger having wine while watching Fulham play Roma on the evening of his 60th birthday doesn’t sell papers.

We need to get used to Arsenal being a rumour mill target for every Thomas, Dickson and Harriet.

On the footballing side, I doubt Wenger will buy a player for the sake of filling holes left by Alex Song while he’s at the ACN. Isn’t it interesting that the ’song’ before the beginning of the season was a relentless noise for Arsene to sign a “world class” defensive midfielder with a name so big folks down the Emirtes basement would have a problem fitting his name onto his shirt. Apparently, Alex Song was not the answer and it was an experiment that was a step too far. Now, the clammour is for someone to cover for Alex Song and not to replace him as he is so indispensible that it’s sad to see him go to the ACN. Folks do really have short memories, but I prefer to look at it as a tribute to Alex Song for showing the faith in him by Wenger is not misplaced.

I suspect Wenger would shy away from landing a temp on our Payroll for 6 weeks or so, and look to take advantage of existing resources. It’s hard to see anything else happening except a rotation of Cesc, Diaby, Denilson or Cesc, Nasri, Denilson, or Cesc, Nasri, Diaby, or Nasri, Diaby Denilson, or Cesc, Rosicky, Diaby or Rosicky, Nasri, Diaby, or Rosicky, Nasri, Denilson – you get the idea….

  22. arshavin will do an overmars – he will have 2 maybe three brilliants seasons with us and then fck off to barca.

bizarre at the last home game that practically noone celebrated his goal with him.

  23. I have a suspicion Arsene will buy in January, and buy “big”.

  24. I find Arshavin’s honesty refreshing; he made no secret of the fact that his first choice move was to Barcelona and was realistic in his acceptance that he is now at Arsenal and it is his intention to do the best for the club.

The only way he can still fulfil his dream of playing in Spain is, as you say, to have three brilliant seasons with us and if he achieves that then we will have benefited enormously almost certainly with lots of shiny new silverware in the trophy cabinet; so, if after these three brilliant seasons he has a chance to fulfil a personal dream, in what is, to all footballers, a very short career over to most by their mid thirties, I for one will feel let down.

  25. I for one will NOT feel let down

  26. Jeeeez, what is it with some of these negative posts man>

I can understand some thinking a defender is needed, but the slating of some of our players is a load of old shite!

    Pack it in!

And enough with nthe Mystic mug impressions!

  27. And if we get 3 top seasons out of Arshavin and he decides to leave, then good luck to him!

By then we will have Wilshire, Vela, Watt, Sunu, Theo and no doubt a few more to come in.

  28. i agree with spike. stop the negative talk were playin v good football at the min lets get behind the boys and stop givin them stick

  29. http://www.dailystar.co.uk/posts/view/104900

read this…lord wenger rules…trustme guys wenger is a real genius!!

  30. Where did these twats come from?

Those Arshavin quotes are old, Why dig them up? Desperate to have a dig are we?

  31. Arsenal still needs a quality striker. When the Gunners come up against the big guys they can’t score goals. A game breaker is needed. In a America we call this a change changer. a guy who can turn a game on its head in as matter of minutes. A cat who can create scoring chances out of nothing. “D” is good but you can’t without scoring.
    http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  32. That’s a load of old tripe too. A striker is the last thing we need, well after that c*ny Usmanov that is.

  33. Whelan scores for Stoke, Spurs have had shitloads of changes but nothing, ha ha ha. And Lennon went of for injury after all subs were used. You have to give credit for Stoke and Pulis, again they are comfortably mid-table when so called experts thought their visit in Premier League would not last more than a year.

I wonder if they’ll say that Spurs need a goalscorer.

bobbygee, and here I just thought that RVP and Arshavin are exactly that kind of players. Your ability to state the obvious is just weird. Besides, it seems you never actually take part in conversations, just give your statement of the hour and leave.

  34. Stoke wins 1-0 at Shite Hart Lane :D

  35. Stoke was BRILLIANT :D

  36. With Torres and Gerrard injured, Liverpool’s team is of a very similar standard to man utd’s. They should have a close game tomorrow.

  37. Excellent results so far –
Phil Orange is going to have to think of a new stunt…dive off the Humber bridge, spitman ? There might be a sunbed dumped down there..

Stoke…you have never truly been on the radar, but well done, lads!

Chavski to draw/lose, or is that simply too much ?

Agree CB… seems we have some new trolls to deal with… hehe…

  38. And Villa….just a point…all good!

  39. fantastic results.

    Love johnathon pearce.

now for chelski to lose 3 in a row?

  40. Blackburn to win 3-1

    Robbinson hattrick

  41. Can you imagine the media response if RVP, Eduardo or Arshavin had got sent off for a really stupid act involving a stamp and a 3 match ban, with Arsenal then dropping points in some of those games We’d hear all about a thread bare squad who aren’t good enough. Now make it the Spud’s and Defoe and not a peep.

  42. Weird to want Blackburn to win, deano… would settle for a draw frankly.

  43. deano – Hpoe your right re: the Chelsea Blackburn score.

Did you ever listen to Jonathon Peace when he was on Capital Gold?

  44. As of this morning, pundits were lauding Tottenham for their strenth and depth especially in attack with Keen, Crouch, Defoe and I don’t know who else. YOu could just see their smug faces as they suggested that Spurs actually have a better squad than Arsenal. Sheesh!

Don’t even know what Keen was doing on the pitch today. He was useless he had to be substituted. And he’s the captain. Crouch might as well have been a lamp post on the pitch. Spurs were just going route one looking for the lanky fella.

We need to keep our momentum going. If we maintain the same pace and discipline in dispatching the teams we need to dispatch, we’ll be riding the top of the table by the time we hit December with a game in hand.

  45. too wright wright wright i did

  46. Marc, absolutely, we’d have been pilloried if one of our players had done that.

Oh and I couldn’t agree more with bobbygee, what we need is a change changer. No team should ever be without a change changer.

  47. We should just enjoy someone like Arshain whilst we have him. I don`t see him being with us for more than a couple of full seasons.

The team for tomorrow virtually picks itself with Bendtner (if fit) coming in for Eboue as the only change from AZ. Eduardo on the bench.

  48. Darius Stone,

    Which pundits were those?

  49. Great performance from Lansbury last night. I was supporting Wednesday as I was out with a friend from Sheffield. Wednesday are a decent side and they can play some nice football, but they were completely undone by Lansbury and Cleverley (on loan from Utd). Lansbury’s goals were a joy to behold.

  50. F*ck the spuds and the media’s ass kissing of em, I say!

  51. It`s more ass kissing of `Arry really Spike. The hacks love the guy in much the same way as that other dodgy blagger Terry Venerables.

  52. Givet scores an own goal. Very similar to Djourou’s own goal there in last season’s game.

  53. Paulie;

Was goiong to mention Venables. He used to get them pissed in his club, called Scribes, I think. That’s one way to get them on your side I guess!

The favouritism shone by the media towards players and managers has a knock on effect and given the way certain players can foul and abuse refs with impunity it isnt hard to see.

  54. `Arry & Tel would make a good double act, a sort of Morecambe & Wise of the Premiership. Well, more Cannon & Ball really.

  55. Those bastards r leading 5 – 0, giving them alot of goal diffrnce

  56. Jay Simpson scores again!

  57. Simpson scored again for QPR.

  58. Ugh, beat me to it, Finsburyparker. Jeff, Chelsea now have the same goal difference than Arsenal, so winning tomorrow would put us back on top again. They’ve scored 24 in 10 games, Arsenal have 27 in 8, and Arsenal needs more goalscorers? Plus, no penalties for Arsenal so far (right?).

  59. “is it just me or arshavin doesnt look 2 happy in arsenal . all his barca talks are really getting to piss me off. ”

Jeff…I’ll assume that you were dropped on your head as a baby and leave it at that, ok?

No? If you really want some satisfaction, I suggest you go to ATVO, look up Arshavin’s “My perfect match” video and see what he says there. If that’s too much for you then look at his performances for us during last and this season.

Arshavin isn’t a player I expect to see at Arsenal beyond 3 or 4 years. I’d love it if he stayed but if Barcelona is his dream, then by all means, he can aim for it. All I’d want is for him to give it his all when he puts on our shirt. So far he hasn’t dissapointed.

  60. QPR’s great form and not so good form of other teams means that they are already sixth with one game in hand. Cardiff is currently second, with three points more than QPR. Would be quite err interesting? fruity? fun? well, something if those two would get promoted.

Well, at least it would be different, no? I think it’s great that in recent years the teams that come up always include some that have not been there at all or have been very long time ago. Which means also that there aren’t so many of what one might call elevator (or yo-yo) teams going up’n'down, up’n'down ad nauseam. Maybe Wolves, B’ham and WBA could be called that though.

Quiet here, well, I have Laphroaig in my glass and football in television (Inter-Catania followed by Sevilla-Espanyol). Bit of a no-lifer thing, but nasty flu is keeping me from going anywhere.

  61. Sorry Anaconda. Think you’re right about the lack of penalties. Ah well, looks like we’ll just have to score goals the old fashioned way this season.

  62. We need 4 new strikers, 7 midfielders and 3 goal keepers, obviously.

  63. you mean the Arsenal way dont you??? we dont score the goals the old fashioned (english) way… :)

  64. Spike.. I think you missed out a few defneders and a new boardroom or 2…

  65. Spike.. I think you missed out a few defenders and a new boardroom or 2…

  66. sorry for the double comment..

  67. chkmiaot-
I meant from open play, but I agree with you too.

    TV5 for the Golden Boot!

That’s a lie, obviously it’s going to be RVP.

  68. There’s a pathetic article in the M*rror about how Arsenal fans are stunned that cesc walked off the pitch the other night without so much as a wave.

I was going to give it the response it deserved, but i have been banned! Must have been the reply I gave to yet another anti-Arsenal piece of shit hackery.

  69. Ha! Not banned after all! They let ,e back in.

  70. Hah, Sporting Gijon – Real Madrid 0-0, while both Sneijder and Robben have scored today. Real’s very very expensive squad seems to lack in depth, hahaha.

And what can one say about Patetico … ahem … Atletico Madrid. Mallorca, while a decent side, are not good away team and missing their best goal scorer. They get two players sent off and concede two penalties in the process. Game ends 1-1…

  71. Anyone notice how if you shout “Carragher” in an underground car park you hear the names of two Liverpool defenders echoing back: Carragher and Agger.

  72. No ,, One of us i didnt. But I just took a stoll down the hall way and gave it a go.. Wow you must have some spare time on your hands. But sure as shit it works.

  73. Good to hear, GJ. Maybe if Carragher’s the problem, then Agger is the answer.

If we don’t see this lineup tomorrow, then serious questions have to be asked about my ability to predict Arsenal teams.

    No idea about the goalie.

    Sagna – Gallas – Vermaelen – Clichy

    Cesc – Song – Diaby

    Bendtner – RvP – Arshavin

  74. I tried some others:

“Why does luck always seem to favour Manchester United?”

    Answer: Knighted, knighted, knighted

“Is it true that the greatest player of the last decade is Cristiano Ronaldo?”

    Answer: Ronaldo, ronaldo, ronaldo

For the purpose of creating the ultimate goalkeeper, what would be the best way of obtaining the DNA of David Seaman?

    etc, etc

  75. eboue will start….bentner on the bench

  76. So, so sorry. That was really tortured stuff.

  77. Abid-Arshavin is a very honest player he says what he feels and he is not a hypocrite. Remember when he was awarded a penalty and he just stood up and he signalled to the ref that it wasn’t a penalty. That is very rare in football. Regarding that stuff you read in the papers its really rubbish , he said he grew up as a Barcelona fan long before he joined us and that has not changed but I will not doubt his loyalty he always gives his best and that all you can ask of a player.
These kind of stories will always appear on papers just today another one in the Mirror about Cesc snubbing the fans in Holland. It is really just bullshit.

  78. And sure as shit, the Daily Star are running it now.

  79. Spike your sentence needs some modification.

    It should read.

And now, sure as running it the Daily Star are shit.

  80. From yesterday and the day before … greetings Frank and CBob, and indeed the all the others.

Regarding my quietness … getting online is a bit of a dog’s breakfast these days. Messy, erratic and cumbersome – and so slow.

I usually get online only between 5-6am, and early evening, and then there’s this thing called work to do (needing internet).

I read the world news and then ACLF, in that order, but can only make the odd post and have my say. How are you?

The bloodsuckers with their long turgid posts (AIC comes to mind for some reason) have slunk back into the lurid swamps and festering holes from whence they come and have nothing to say.

It’s good that most of the ACLF crew is around, but Queen seems to have gone AWOL, and Maria has found herself in Bloemfontein.

Matt seems to imagine that the only ‘true’ Arsenal supporters are able to attend matches – warning Matt, don’t go down that road or I’ll be onto you.

    We are the Arsenal!

(Catch you later at the match Matt, hey?)

  81. Well done tottenham lads yesterday. Things are looking more positive this year. Restricting Stoke to one goal is something to build on. Rednapp is producing the goods. Well done, well done.

  82. All im saying is that AA dosent respect the team and the manager enough to make those comments. The other day, wenger said he didnt think the squad needed strengthing and then AA comes in and says we need 2 players, to me, thats plain rude and lack of respect. He was brought in to play, he should just play and stop saying shit. On the pitch i think he is one of the best, but let him not give the media anything to talk about

  83. And abid, a reckon youre a retard if you cant see this

  84. expect i dont know wenger as much as i think, he would play almunia.. Sagna…gallas…tv…clincy diaby…….song cesc eboue…rvp….AA it would be a close match but arsenal to win 3- 1(its a shame that we would concede a goal)

  85. Jeff

While your reaction to AA is understandable, the line between being politically correct and hypocrisy is a fine one. Honesty on the pitch is all one should expect of AA and showing commitment on the pitch is a better show of respect than mere words can.

  86. You know Arsenal is just one injury away from acquittal, would be nice to have backups
