Opportunity Knocks As Brum Arrive In Town

Birmingham City arrive at The Emirates this afternoon, Arsenal hoping to continue their winning ways. A new club record will be set for scoring four or more goals in consecutive games if a drubbing is handed out today. A cautionary note though is sounded if we remember that the last time Birmingham were in the Premier League, Arsenal were twice held to draws.

Much is being made in the press about this being the first meeting between the two sides since that winter’s afternoon at St Andrews. Neither protaganist will be playing this afternoon, Eduardo one of the Arsenal walking wounded. He is currently being kept company in the medical rooms at London Colney by long-term absentees Johan Djourou and Denilson with Lukasz Fabianski – a minor setback suffered by the Pole apparently – with Nicklas Bendtner and Gael Clichy joining them following this week’s exertions at home and abroad. Also missing will be Carlos Vela who is a late returnee from World Cup duties.

Manuel Almunia is returning and it would be a major surprise if he does not immediately reclaim his place from Vito Mannone, who will revert to the bench. Abou Diaby has sufficiently recovered from his minor ankle knock to take his place in the squad although with the midweek Champions League fixture, the extent of his injury will decide whether or not he starts this afternoon.

With those in mind, I suspect Arsene will line up as follows:

Almunia; Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Gibbs; Fabregas, Song, Diaby; Rosicky, van Persie, Arshavin

If Diaby does not make it, Eboue will no doubt be preferred to Theo Walcott. Despite playing for the Under-21s during the international break, Walcott is surely still short of match fitness and likely for the next couple of weeks to rotate with Rosicky, alternating starts and substitute appearances. His return though, along with Samir Nasri’s by the end of this month, give Arsene a mouth-watering midfield/attack to choose from. In the same way that George Graham collected centre backs, Wenger has an enviable array of talent in midfield. All of them would sit comfortably in any Premier League squad.

For Kieran Gibbs, this is an important opportunity. He made a good impression last season when called upon and needs to show that he is continuing to improve, rather than stagnating as many his age can. Whilst it is apparent that he is Clichy’s understudy, there is pressure from Traore to keep the England youngster on his toes. Likewise, Clichy knows that he has to keep on top of his game to ensure retaining his place; competition for places is no bad thing.

The referee this afternoon has to step up to the plate as well. Birmingham will no doubt defend robustly but need to be reigned in before matters step outside the laws of the game. Probert has form in late, controversial decisions this season and a comfortable lead might be needed to ensure that any interference from him has no bearing on the outcome. The fixture is of the type where the team has fallen short in the past; lowly opposition, immediately after the international break.

By the time kick-off comes, Chelsea could have fallen at Villa Park, a result that would present an opportunity to close the gap. Should they do so, I wonder if they will be written off as title contenders in the same way that Arsenal are because of two defeats this season already. The other teams above us have emminently winnable matches although City will be slightly more wary of Wigan following the latter’s recent win over Chelsea whilst Tottenham should be too good for Portsmouth. Below us, a weakened Liverpool will be viewing the trip to Sunderland as trickier than it should really be. Chances to open small gaps are emerging as well.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. after international breaks we struggle a bit to find our rhythm , so i predict a slow start and a strong finish .

  2. The only way Arsene can improve Almunia is to let him fight for his position once more. Mannone has done very well and he’s so far not worse than Almunia.

Almunia is decent and is dependable but as he’s proven more often, he can’t win games. If we want to win the championship, then we need a GK that can win games when the outfield players are not playing well. The Fulham game comes to mind.

I’m certain Arsene will play Mannone once more to send a message that competitive environment is the only way to arrest mediocrity.

  3. WE HAVE TO WIN 2DAY BECAUSE I THINK CHELSEA AND LPOOL WILL DROP POINTS THIS WKEND,IM THINKING OF 2-0 WITH ARSHAVIN AND CESC SCORING,LOOKING FORWARD TO GIBBS ASWELL I HOPE HE PLAYS WELL TO PUT CLICHY UNDER PRESSURE GAEL HAS BEEN POOR ALL SEASON AND GIBBS MIGHT WAKE HIM UP A BIT WITH A GOOD GAME 2DAY

  4. just watched last years game with addywanker scoring a penalty bad enough, open your blog and there he is again isnt it about time you deleted him?? Great blog keep up the good work

  5. okey lets talk about the whore later , talk about the game now.

  6. my team will be

    don vito

    Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Gibbs

    Song
    Fabregas, Rosicky

    eboue, van Persie, Arshavin

  7. I think 2days game is a must win game.and if we don’t win the game today then we are not quietly, simply good enought to lift the premiereship this season.and one thing that i hope today is that almunia to be dropped if he is to play.

  8. I wondered the same thing YW.

I also don’t understand where this ‘Clichy has been rubbish this season’ is coming from? He has not been perfect, but no one has even the great Arshavin has hardly set the world alight so far, but I don’t see anyone criticising him.

  9. Arshavin interview in the Telegraph is fantastic. A highlight:

“If I go to a restaurant in Russia and ask for simple salad, there are lots of cut tomatoes, cut cucumbers and a few leaves. But here? Opposite way! There are a lot of leaves and one cut tomato and two slices of cucumber!’’

  10. Bragging Rights Ltd

Highlight? Then the rest must be pure gold.

  11. Flint McCullough

    Good stuff as usual, YW.

What a load of pundit/poison dwarf driven tosh from Only Fabregas.

You need your goalkeeper foremost to be reliable & competent with the the ability to make great saves.

Almunia has proved himself over the last 2 seasons to be at least on a par with any keeper in the PL, admittedly in a period where there are any truly great ones.

Manuel fell below his own standards coming into this season & I think he had been carrying whatever problem he had during that period, whilst Fabianski was not fit & maybe AW didn’t trust young Vito enough.

If Almunia is fully fit mentally & physically then he will play, because he is still our best ‘keeper.

What this period has proved is that we have 4 ‘keepers, who we can play without any fear.

  12. Flint McCullough

    Correction

period where there are no truly great ones…

  13. Good find crafty bison

“If I’m in a team that lets me dribble and create something special of course I smile.’’ But most players don’t smile. “Well, they don’t play for Arsenal,’’ replied Arshavin.

  14. ….Arsenal…

  15. I don’t see any reason that we won’t pick up where we left off against Blackburn. I’m thinking probably narrow lead at half time, followed by some second half fireworks.

We have so many attacking choices coming off the bench, guys like Theo, Eboue, maybe Wilshere will come on and just murder a tiring opposition team who’ve been chasing the ball for 60+ minutes.

    5-1

  16. What a blessing that demented international horse-shit has ended.

I think we might see Eboue at right wing today if Diaby is feeling fragile. Personally though i would like to see Ramsey get a start.

Is Almunia just keeping the goal warm for Fabianski now?

What a couple of weeks this will be. I think we should win today and Tuesday (be a disaster to drop points this afternoon, even if redeemable). That would put us about through the groups stage and then we can look forward to two london derbies and the kiddie cup.

If we win these next 3 league games we will be looking good, with other teams around us playing each other they must drop points.

  17. I am genuinely surprised by today’s article by the monkeys at Le Grove. Based on fact & reason for a change.

  18. Villa & Chelski are trying to bore each other into submission.

  19. Agbonlahor tries a trademark dive.

  20. Bragging Rights Ltd

Fucking hell. Liverpool must have done a deal with TVE here in Spain. We get one – occasionally two – matches a week on terrestrial TV, and yet again they’re showing Liverpool, for like the 7th gameweek in a row. Not even the smallest sign of Arsenal this season, and we’re halfway through October.

Obviously there’s the scouse Spanish connection that could appeal to an audience here, but really it amounts to one goalie and one regular outfield player. Which is exactly what Arsenal has.

Oh yeah, Rafa Benitez doesn’t count. No sane person would consider him a draw.

  21. But there’s more to tackling than Diaby. (That was on purpose). Essien’s a good reader of the game, so is Song becoming, Essien drives the team etc.

I think they also need to understand how Diaby has been positioned this season to fully appreciate his talents.

  22. The Brain,

I completely agree. Personally I’m just amazed that the guys on Le Grove were for a change willing to go with reason rather than bellus.

I, for example, am still completely incredulous at how in every game Diaby’s played, he’s won the ball more than anybody on the pitch, yet the commonly held opinion is that he contributes nothing to defence.

  23. March 27…..

Will that be a date with destiny for this arsenal team? It is strange that neither dudu or taylor will be playing this evening, but is dudu to have something to say at st. andrews at such a crucial time of the season? A priceless winning goal perhaps… who knows!

Any way I think brum will give us a game boosted by news of their new ownership, but we should see them off.

My prediction 3-1 to the arsenal!

On a side note… I notice that darren bent is the second highest scorer in the league at the moment! He suddenly looks WORTH 18 million pounds, doesnt he? So I guess this is a MESSAGE to spud players.

Rejuvenate your career and find success…. LEAVE TOTTENHAM! :)

    Cheers all!!!

  24. Asianfansince97

Crosses fingers Villa can keep it up. Make it at least a draw at FT.

  25. Arshavin ~
Great article; he says SHIT alot, and loves his salads.
What more do you need from a man ? Alas, he will now probably have some Barca DNA put in his sliced cucumber…

  26. Arsenal: Mannone, Eboue, Gallas, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Fabregas, Song Billong, Diaby, Walcott, van Persie, Rosicky. Subs: Almunia, Sagna, Ramsey, Silvestre, Wilshere, Arshavin, Traore

  27. Arsenal:

Mannone, Eboue, Gallas, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Fabregas, Song Billong, Diaby, Walcott, van Persie, Rosicky. Subs: Almunia, Sagna, Ramsey, Silvestre, Wilshere, Arshavin, Traore

  28. A R S E N A L

  29. Very attacking line up:

Tried to post a paste but Yogi is modding my posts like some kind of Grizzly Bear at the moment:

Eboue in for Sagna, Gibbs for Clichy

Walcott Rosicky & RVP in attack,

Fab Diaby & Song in Midfield.

    Arshavin on the bench,

    Mannone in goal.

    COYG!

  30. How could Chelsea have lost? Didn’t the pundits say they’re more or less invincible? I’m confused!

Come on Arsenal….we cant afford to drop points now!

  31. Villa 2 Chelsea 1. FT. Very nice indeed.

  32. Asianfansince97

Good, Chelsea’s done. Now crosses fingers and toes Arsenal will win.

  33. Chelsea av bin dunne other

  34. Oh, Willy Gallas & Tommy Vee at CB, of course.

  35. Thank God it’s finally here!

    ARSENAL!ARSENAL!ARSENAL!

  36. You mean dem Chavs are over the hill, all the way down Shooters Hill. Blap Blap!

  37. Anyone got a Guus Hiddink??

  38. Any links guys?

  39. Hey any one got a live stream for me,,, Please!!

  40. thanks guys

  41. Some filthy tackles early on, blatant follow through, ref doing nothing as usual.

  42. Bragging Rights Ltd

    What a knob.

  43. fuck you brums..wallcot looks in trouble…

  44. Thanks all!

  45. RVP…!!!

  46. Absolutely brilliant from RVP, I don’t know how he controlled and finished that quite so well. No other player could have scored that goal.

  47. Bragging Rights Ltd

    This is brutal!

  48. Arsenal playing orgasm-inducing football. 2-0!! Diaby!

  49. Eboue terrorising the Birmingham defence! Where he left off after his last game at RB
    Great selection.

I thought today Eboue and Diaby could really play a big part against these *****. Diaby’s been more making runs to support RVP so has seen less of the ball, but a great finish when required.

  50. Thanks for the links guys.

  51. A balloon scored for Sunderland against Liverpool. Is this a sign of Liverpool’s future plight?

  52. I raised the point on Arseblog that Diaby looks increasingly like Duquan from the Wire. I thought I’d share this nugget of wisdom here.

  53. Is Vito going to lose his don status now.

  54. Not sure how much he was to blame, Duke… but the look on Big Al’s face was funny…is he turning into “Mad Al” ?

    Robin… Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm…tasty!

  55. Nor am i Ponyboy, i saw him jump then freeze in the air then the ball was in the net! then i see Al smirking. My stream is piss poor and now its done a Bendtner.

  56. The gunners are looking good. Up 2-0 I think. Way to go garoto.. This is a little Brasilian slang. this means way to go boy a good show

  57. So surprised and pleased that Rosicky hasn’t picked up any niggling injuries in the last few weeks.

  58. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Phew!

  59. Nearly the perfect goal!

    Unlucky Diaby.

  60. F*ck you Mcleich…i hate this guy, he reminds me of Ferguson

  61. The thought of AW going up to the Leech and giving him a McMaradonna did entertain me for a few seconds.

  62. Instead of shaking hands…er…anyway, great result, fantastic performances all over the pitch.

Just a shame that Gallas didn’t get a goal.

  63. Bragging Rights Ltd

That was definitely a bit of a post-international break match, but anything less than 3 points would have been a tad harsh on us. Van Persie and Diaby stood out for me. Great to keep the momentum up.

  64. So who gets to win man of the match between Alex Song and Abou Diaby?

Diaby says (on ATVO) that the team feel guilty for gifting Birmingham another goal and they’re collectively responsible for switching off after the second goal. They’re blamin g it on concentration levels after an international break.

  65. I agree G4E, all jocks are sort of the same moaning miserable gits.

  66. It’s looking more and more like this could be Liverpool’s season.

  67. @Poliziano.

At this rate and the way Liverpool are playing, Arsenal will most definitely drop out of the top four. I mean, look at today’s game, we were shocking….LOL! Compare that with Liverpool.

  68. Apparently even Man poo were holding on desperately against Bolton and were lucky to scrape the win.

  69. Poliziano
    ha ha!

    ***
    BRLtd @ 5:15pm
Just what I was thinking! But we coped better than we have in recent seasons. Good to have that sticky patch and then have the confidence not to panic, but to come through and win. Well done, boys.

  70. Seems Darren Bent was a big fish in a small pond at Spurs.

  71. Don’t worry Duke, I’m sure the Spuds will buy Bent again for 30 million this time :)

  72. Are Liverpool and Cham$ki in crisis mode now?

  73. No because they hace the squads to get through it, like Liverpool who have..voronin,Vauxhall cavalier, ndog, insure, babel, spearing, the list of quality goes on.

  74. Bradys right foot

Typical post international break performance but we won and chelski lost absolutely delighted. I’m in such a good mood I might even venture over to the blog of doom and see how the anti Song brigade manage to criticise Alex after his fantastic performance today.

  75. Song was terrific today. He is fast becoming the best defensive midfielder in the premiership.

  76. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Better than Lucas Leiva?

  77. Didnt play well but we got the points.MOTM RVP.
Almunia’s face sitting on the bench said he is not happy with being number 2.Make no mistake he was dropped today you dont put a unfit keep on the bench
Mannone went back into our good books with that save when the score was 2-1 when Sagna fell asleep.
What a wonderful finish by Arshavin.World class

  78. Whoop Whooop!

Yup, Song was quality. Gibbs too was great.

Can’t stop for long, I’m off to celebrate!

  79. I have always been a big Sagna fan but IMO he has been our poorest player this season.Again today when he came on he switched off and it very nearly cost us a goal.Great save the Don
I never thought i would say this but i would now put Eboue in front of him

  80. “Mannone went back into our good books with that save when the score was 2-1 when Sagna fell asleep.”

He was not in my bad book to start with anyway.

  81. What a Game ..

What a team… oh YESS 3 more points in the bag..

Vp showed his usual class, Song was was tremendous but Abou was simply outstanding.. he was everywhere, like a spider on his web.. He made key intercepts and kept the ball, broke up the play with his power and silky movements..

Its always risky changing two of your back 4 Eboue was a terror going forward, Gibbs did well also but the spaces on his side of the pitch were exploited more when he went forward.. It will be good to have Clichy back..

Diaby’s defense really impressed me today, he really cleaned up a lot of the open spaces ..

Resilient display from everyone especially so soon after the internationals and if you look at the other top four, there’s no comparison..

I see team Rednose are still profiting off intimidation with another crucial own goal to take them to the top..

    KAMAAAAN YOU GUNNERZ

  82. Hahaha. U’re all evil and dirty, with those liverpool jokes/facts.

Today’s results show that liverpool isn’t just a 2 man team. They coped quite easily without Gerrard and Torres.

  83. I read somewhere that an Arsenal fan phoned talksport today and destroyed Collymore, did anybody hear this? Apparently Collymore completely lost his rag, brilliant!

  84. It’s such a shame about Liverpool. Beaten by a balloon and broke. If only Arsenal were in such a healthy position.

  85. It’s great to see the team win under these circumstances. The first game after an International break is always a potential banana skin, but they effectively negotiated their way out of it to claim 3 points. Excellent stuff!

I thought Diaby was great today. The run of games he is getting is really starting to pay off. Long may it last.

  86. If what Ben says is correct can someone post a copy. Collymore is seriously trying to oust Gary Neville as the most odious human being ever to have lived.

  87. Well at least Benetiz has a justified excuse for losing. The balloon really was on the pitch. Unlike Arsene’s the team is young crap.

What brings me more joy after each game, is that it seems Rosicky’s strange injury is behind him. And Nasri is getting closer to a return.

  88. Marc there are a lot of contenders for that title. The one for me in the past was Razor Ruddock. What a piece of excrement he is.

  89. Passenal – It’s amazing that anyone even doubt’s Wenger’s judgement but time and time again he is ridiculed and criticised for getting it wrong only for events to prove him correct all after all.

You’d think the arseholes would have learnt by now.

  90. I agree Passenal. Good to see you. We can deal better with the international’s because we’ve got more depth in our squad than any other team in the EPL. Easier to find balance between tired and fresh legs.

I missed the game, will try to catch it soon. Watched the highlights. Did big Al really had a smirk on his face when Mannone conceded?

  91. Same nonsense from the ref.

Birmingham 16 fouls, 1 yellow card
Arsenal 8 fouls, 1 yellow card.

  92. Apparently the balloon in question was a Liverpool balloon. I can’t wait for Manuel, sorry Benitez to try to blame it all on Sunderland, Sunderland supporter’s, the ref, the FA, UEFA, FIFA, the Catholic Church, God, Allah, Yahweh, Barrack Obama, Jimmy Carter and his Mum.

  93. Bragging Rights Ltd

Have you seen the video of the kid serving the balloon onto the pitch?

  94. They got 2 yellows Dupsffokcuf, but it should have been 4 ..

  95. Lol. BRL, checked the video. The kid looked devastated after that goal. Serves the little prick right for being a pool fan.

Liverpool have great depth. Just look at Jay Spearing; he’s definitely from the deep.

  98. I haven’t seen what happen with the balloon just the commentry on Soccer Saturday. Is what Ateeb said happened correct?

  99. . to you too Ateeb…good to see you around man.

  100. Bragging Rights Ltd

I haven’t seen the kid’s reaction, but I’m desperately trying to find it now!

  101. Bragging Rights Ltd

    This is what I’ve seen:

  102. @G4E, yes sorry I forgot about their keeper being carded.

  103. Can’t wait for MOTD to see what the puppet pundits will say about Liverpool & Cham$ki

  104. I’m going to have to check out this balloon goal – it sounds hilarious!

  105. I’m laughing my arse off and I haven’t even seen it yet.

Is there anything more amusing than a scouser in pain or distress?

  106. They showed it on ESPN. And they decided to show the MANU and Pool game, instead of Arsenal’s. Im quite pissed about that.

The balloon somehow managed to divert the ball into the net, which probably Reina could have saved. A pool fan, was the culprit for throwing the ball on the pitch. And Benetiz is going to blame the poor kid for the loss. Too bad. However everyone could see how crap they were today, Bent shouldve scored atleast 3 more.

  107. There was a Liverpool defender right next to the balloon though, they can’t complain, or they can all they want…

  108. The look on the kid’s face is priceless. I think I’m finally over the CL defeat at Anfield.

  109. Actually what I really want to see is the thug JT throwing a tantrum after their defeat

  110. Thanks for finding the clip BRL – hoist by their own petard!

  111. I think Johnson kicked the balloon instead of the ball

  112. Ateeb – As far as I’m concerned Liverpool have been at best woeful for years now, I mean how can an alleged top team play the Spud’s and not only get beaten but have a bench that makes the Spud’s bench look World class? On top of that you have clowns like Phil Thompson claiming that there is now a top 3 (ManU, Liverpool and Chelsea) and Arsenal will finish 5th. If any team is at risk of dropping out of the CL spots Liverpool are clearly the most at risk.

  113. Bragging Rights Ltd

Haha, Liverpool has its own “balloon boy”.

  114. I wish we had an £18 million full back!

  115. I’ll enjoy the puns in the papers
    “Sunderland burst Liverpool’s title balloon”
    “Liverpool deflated by Bent strike”
    “Red-faced cheek”

  116. BRL,

The clip doesn’t show the kid’s reaction afterwards. Im trying to look for it, but haven’t found it yet. Im sure it will crop up, soon enough on the internet.

    Marc,

The loss of Xabi Alonso was too much to cope with for them. How much I watched of them last season, it was Alonso who was driving the team more than anyone else. And this year, they’re out of quality in midfield.

  117. That kid is dead. Can you imagine what the filthy scousers will do to him if they get hold of him? He’d be safer if a Triad betting syndicate who’d lost a fortune found him first. He seriously needs to go into witness protection, get a new identity and move to Canada.

  118. Ateeb – Agree with what you say but why did Benitez drive him out with his pursuit of Barry from the previous summer?

The man is stark raving mad!

  119. As for retards who were doubting Denilson, last season. Both Liverpool and Manu would be delighted to have him right now. He’s walk straight into their starting 11.

  120. Bragging Rights Ltd

I’ve read about it now, Ateeb. Apparently he looked devastated. This is going to be sweet…but the kid should probably stay away from school for a couple of weeks.

  121. Bragging Rights Ltd

Of course he did, you just said that!

Sorry, I’ve confused myself scouring the internet to laugh at a child’s misery!

  122. Don’t feel bad, BRL. Serves him right for being a Pool fan. No sympathies for him. LOL. And he will have to live with it for the rest of his life. Excellent. Let’s hope he lives long enough, to write an autobiography.

Benitez is mad. No one in his right mind, would trade barry for Alonso.

  123. The funniest bit was Reina going for the balloon..
Apparently it was there before the game even began ~ but that’s Alan “Arsenal can’t win the league” Green’s 606….so MOTD; looking forward to it for once.

[ One advantage of sunday games = MOTD2)

  124. That balloon is Sunderland’s answer to Wayne Rooney.

  125. Was the balloon onside? It was definitely interfering with play. Some people are suggesting it could have been a handball.

  126. Mark Hughes is considering a £10 million swoop for the air-headed young striker. Hughes has been impressed by his low centre of gravity and his ability to lose his marker in dangerous areas.

  127. Being a ‘pool ball PZ, it was their last defender..

And so, technically ..an own goal ?

  128. lol @ “That balloon is Sunderland’s answer to Wayne Rooney.”

That’s the closest thing I’ve seen that resembles Rooney on the pitch.

  129. I’ve seem things dropped by dogs in the park that resemble rooney more.

  130. yes MOTD should be fun today, I guess that’s the scousers answer to Eduardo’s “beach ball goal”..

I guess Marsherano was just as big a loss, as torres and geronki.. The chavs though lack a valid excuse as just a few days ago Ancellotti claimed his team had lost their last game for the season against Wigan..

I felt sorry for the little shit who through it, although that was quickly killed off by seeing one of the Liverpool fans who’s mouth was a literal downward arc on both sides (I really thought that was only possible in cartoons) even the scouser Champion Pie eater looked stuffed, when doing his interview..

G4E That look definitely adds to your dimension..

  131. certainly very happy with a win after the internationals… we are not doing badly in the goal diff area either; this may come in handy this season.

any links to the goals anyone?

  132. loosecannon@8:16 :I’ll enjoy the puns in the papers

Reuters headline: Liverpool left deflated by Sunderland’s beach-ball winner
    :D

  133. Diaby is proving himself now. The run of games is helping him to improve defensively as we all saw today. Diaby is the one picked by Arsene to play with Cesc and Song in the midfield.

When Denilson returns, his chances will be limited because Arsene won’t drop Diaby. AW rates Diaby so highly.

  134. OF ~ sorry, but disagree… ofcourse no-one knows AW’s mind on this, but each can play different roles for different games/challenges..

Last word on that ball… it was a balloon!

  135. “Balloondinho justifies his inflated price tag” ha ha ha

  136. ponyboy, I think Denilson must have stolen OF’s imaginary girlfriend because he never misses a chance to stick the boot in.

  137. What women in her right mind would want a whiner like OF.

  138. Bragging Rights Ltd

    PB,

Denilson lacks strength, recovery pace and the skill to get out of tight situations, while 90% of his passes are backwards and sideways. Also, if he is so good, why don’t Dunga, a defensive midfielder, select him for Brazil. Arsene knows that the average foreigner Denilson won’t make it because we have too many better players coming through.

There, I think that just about covers it.

  139. For every man there’s a woman, for every woman a man.

  140. My mum always said every stale loaf has it’s mouldy cheese!

  141. Oh Passenal…that conjures up some ghastly images…

  142. I always loved that expression of hers ponyboy!

  143. There you go, OF. You don’t have to settle for hard cheese. There’s a mouldy cheese somewhere just for you. The pair of you can quietly decay together.

  144. MOTD! It’s cheesy! And we may get to see 3 seconds of Arsenal at the end… with a short discussion of just how fantastic Birmingham were…

  145. Leave that baby belle to Denilson, OF, and find yourself a fetid feta.

  146. If you’re lucky, you might find a corleggy from Ireland.

  147. Poor old Rafa sounded like he was on the verge of tears!

  148. ponyboy @ 10.34 pm – I think you called it right. ‘Brave’ Birmingham were not outgunned according to many of the headlines I’ve seen around the internet. I expect nothing less from the 2 Alans on the MOTD sofa in their matching grey jumpers!

  149. That Liverpool could concede such an unlucky goal and yet still prevent Sunderland from scoring again shows they have the hearts of champions.

  150. The great Alan Hansen will probably still insist Liverpool will win the league and Arsenal doesn’t have the “strength in depth” of the “Top 3″.

  151. Lovely Arsenal review on MOTD..

  152. Nothing that happened at the Emirates today was interesting enough for MOTD.

Alan Hansen didn’t get a chance to double down on his analysis that Liverpool will win the league while Arsenal don’t have the same “strength in depth” that the “Top 3″ have.

  153. We will win the title and this is why.
Liverpool have all but gone in my opinion.
Maunre so far have won 3 games with own goals and they really struggled against Sunderland and Bolton at home, and I think its a matter of time before lady luck and referees finally desert them Fergie did himself no good after his rant about the refs fitness. This time there is no Ronaldo to save them.
Chelsea’s old men’s legs have started creaking with Essien, Drogba and Obi Michael disapearing to Africa and January transfer window will remain shut for them.
I think we are in a very strong position to win the title if we are a little bit lucky with injuries.

There was an uncomfortable silence from the pundits about Arsenal we are shown at the end of MOTD with no analysis of the game, I think they are slightly worried that they might be proved wrong after Alan Hansen predicted Liverpool winning the title and Arsenal possibly missing out on the CL.
After the circus that followed us about Eduardo then ADEwho? we are now quietly going up the table.
I feel sorry for Walcott, he is injured again. It just shows, he is a marked man and he will always get kicked.

  154. Listen, if I have to play you; it’s not because you’re my son and because I love you, it’s because you have the quality. If you weren’t good enough, trust me, you wouldn’t be there. So go out and be yourself’. When you think about it, there’s not a better thing you could say to a player.”

    Clichy on Arsene Wenger.

  155. Ole -I’ve read it. Its a great article. He also said he wanted to play for England and Walcott is his best mate.
    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/arsenal/article6879305.ece

  156. “When Denilson returns, his chances will be limited because Arsene won’t drop Diaby. AW rates Diaby so highly.”

Foolishness. Diaby always looks good against lesser teams, but does not yet make good decisions against top tier midfielders. Against physical teams, we’ll see Diaby…the more technical the opposing midfielders the more likely we see Denilson.

  157. Bradys right foot

Steve Claridge, Stan Collymore, Alan Hansen, Le Grove and the usual suspects in the Sunday supliment your right Arsenal aren’t good enough to win the league as we don’t have an out and out striker just six or seven players who can score goals. And we obviously don’t have the strength in depth just as well then that we’ve been lucky enough to be injury free from the start of the season. We concede too many goals as well, 3 more tham Man Poo at the moment but the goal difference tells its own story.

If we won the title this year it would be so sweet, for so many reasons.

  158. anyone got the highlights? I thought ATVO would have had the game up by now. I had to miss the match because of class and work :(

  159. BRF, they are trying to find any reasons for us to not win the title. Shame, most of them have not got a clue init.

  160. abid, if you have sky it is on football first all night

  161. Don’t have that unfortunately :( I’ll watch the game tomorrow morning so its ok.

    I love Cesc:

  162. California Gooner

    abid, check 101goals.com

  163. thanks CG! Much appreciated :)

  164. “Also, if he is so good, why don’t Dunga, a defensive midfielder, select him for Brazil. Arsene knows that the average foreigner Denilson won’t make it because we have too many better players coming through.”

Dunga prefers Josue, Gilberto and Felipe Melo in the defensive midfield. Each of them is older than twenty five years old. Lucas Leiva and Anderson have each played all of two matches at 150 minutes for Lucas and 78 for Anderson. So it seems that Dunga doesn’t trust the youngsters just yet. Your point is retarded.

  165. re: Liverpool…
I feel sorry for Rafa actually. Talk about bad luck…The United fans are already cracking jokes about Bent winning the Ballon d’or and what not. I hope Liverpool pick themselves up and give United a right thrashing…

This discussion about Denilson vs. Diaby is silly. We need them both and for different purposes. It’s like the people calling for Eboue to be removed from the team when Nasri comes back. Ridiculous.

  166. I think we should stop blaming the balloon, it was Johnson who deflected the ball of the top of his boot and poked the balloon with his toe instead.

You can say the balloon was a distraction to the players, but it was not the immediate cause of the goal.

  167. You got to laugh at how pathetic MOTD really is, they showed the highlights but didn’t comment on the game at all……LMAO, eat your hearts out fools.

  168. Friday Trinidadian Pollard scores in 53 in 19 balls in one of the most extraordinary T-20 innings I’ve seen to keep T&Tobago in the ICL (or whatever). Not a T-20 fan, but still, wow, what an innings!!

Friday Ghana win the under-20 World Cup in Egypt with 10 men from the 35th minute, (!), against Brazil (!), in an exciting penalty shootout. Fantastico.

Saturday RvP scores THE goal of the season so far, just watch it over and over, in Arsenal’s 3-1 win against B’ham, while Diaby shows his class. The lads stroll to a comfortable win after the usually tricky international break. Rosicky and Cesc are inspired. Song is majestic.

Saturday Chelsea lose 2-1 away against A. Villa, and Terry throws the biggest hissy fit of the season when the 2nd goes in. Watch it over and over. I was worried his head would explode.

Today I think I’ll make a tasty marrow bone stew and put a old Tony Bennett sings Billie Holiday CD on, then Dollar Brand’s “African Marketplace”, and hell Illinois Jacquet to end, why not.

    Do weekends get much better?

Well, hello there ACLFers! And how do you do?

  169. Hey ZimPaul – you summed it up nicely. Only a ManU defeat could have improved the situation. My speciality veggie ‘Toad In The Hole’ for tea and the Clash on the stereo apart from that sounds like we have a similar outlook!

  170. Wouldn’t mind a bit of the Clash either. Reminds me of the late 70s, early 80s.

  171. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Hi G69,

that was just an attempted dig at Only Fabregas, aka Howard, who has been trotting out the same ridiculous arguments for well over a year now. I wanted to beat him to the punch, but he never came back!

Denilson’s my favourite Arsenal player. And frankly, the longer he’s overlooked by Dunga, the better for Arsenal.

  172. Just back from the game. What a performance. Could have and should have been 7-0. Different class. Sublime passing.

    Robin Van Persie…clickclickclick…Robin Van persie…clickclickclick..

Worked his socks off for the whole game.

    Alex Song…I salute you

The decoration on the outside of the stadium is a big improvement. I wonder who the ginger guy in the middle is?

85% of the ‘normal’ seats were occupied at KO. 60% of club level were occupied at KO.

First groups to leave….11mins and 56 seconds before full-time, that is 14mins and 56 seconds before the final whistle.

5 minutes before the final whistle. 70% of normal seats occupied. 40% of club level.

2 minutes before the final whistle.40% of normal seats occupied. 20% of club level.

Final whistle i.e. people left to applaud the players. 30% normal seats occupied. 5% club level.A disgrace.

  173. I had to listen to manu on the radio yesterday afternoon and only saw extended highlights on Sky of the Arsenal game later. Prior to that, while cooking the Saturday curry, I listened to 606.

Two Arsenal fans called. One said that we had a good team and listed all the players who would score 10 plus goasl this season for us and all the great players in our squad. Green then told us that we didn’t have a ‘goalscorer’ and couldn’t win the league because our squad wasn’t good enough.

The second Arsenal caller, pleased him by saying that he had been at the match and that we ‘were not good enough’ to win the league as we ‘had no heart’ and ‘didn’t want it enough’. We needed Viera back to show ‘guts’. He stated that a better team than Birmingham would have ‘had us in real trouble’.

I also heard it said, various times, that the tackle on Walcott that injured him, was ‘fair’.

I then watched the match. Walcott was scythed down brutally but in the words of the commentators, ‘the ball was won’. I saw Fab’s face, he was furious and set about the Brummies like a man possessed. We won comfortably, unlike the mancs or the scousers or the Chavs. Control and heart throughout the side with, arguably, three of our first choice back five missing.

I ranted about this media bollox to the air generally and Consolslel in particular. She brought me up short by telling me that Arsenal fans alwqays seemed to see themselves as poor victims. This from someone who believes the media are biased against us.

She was right. I was enraged by the media’s take on the day. I moaned. I think it’s about time we stopped moaning and stood tall. WQe are a big club with a big past and a big future.

It will be difficult, Sunday Supplement have just written us off again and told me that ‘Spurs’ have ‘potentially’ a ‘better squad’ than us. But that’s it. No more moaning from me about the poor sad, deluded and corrupt media.

We are The Arsenal. We are the best.

  174. What a great day, ZP!

    ***
Love that attitude, Consolsbob – reminiscent of Theo’s after he was “tackled”. He evaded Ridgewell with consummate ease, raced down the right wing and nearly scored a goal. His way of saying, “I am Theo Walcott and I play for the The Arsenal. Who the hell are you?”

  175. As usual, the media are talking bollocks. Especially on a day where Liverpool succumbed to Sunderland, and Chelsea to Villa. Collymore laughed in the face of an Arsenal caller on Talk Shite last night and said he would donate £100 to great Ormond Street hospital when Arsenal failed to win a trophy. He said that after a couple of injuries in December Arsenal would wilt.

When are these pundits and arseholes going to get it ? We already have 8 to 9 players missing due to suspension or injury. Did any of you see Almunia, Clichy, Djourou, Nasri, Denilson, Eduardo, Vela, Bendtner, Ramsey on the bench ?

The significance of today’s victory was that it was achieved after the international break. A game notorious for mid table sides to frustrate us out of a win with their fresher players and our jet lagged injury raggled returning players. Again, not noted by the press.

Let the press get on with it. Anybody who claims that Spurs has a better squad than us suffers from an instant loss of credibility. This Arsenal team is going from strength to strength.

  176. Agree about that 606 caller. How could he say that we had no heart?

Van Persie is fighting so hard for the team. Brilliant performance after an international break. Rosicky played 2 matches in a week so was tired. Diaby was immense and is improving as he gets a run of games. Song’s pass for the goal was Fabregas-esque.

  177. But…..

How could anyone paid to watch and write about football claim Spuds “have potentially a better team” than Arsenal?

Isn’t that degeneracy? I mean, seriously?

I can’t stop being shocked by media crap. I don’t want to.

It keeps me reality-bound to keep highlighting how they talk out of their arses most of the time.

It was only last season that some of those pundits said few Arsenal players will get into the Aston Villa team.

I watch a lot of football, and I don’t see many teams more convincing than us in this league, and in any league.

We’re the best team in the league on current form.

  178. ZP – what a great post! I was delighted to see Ghana win. The emergence of African football is evident all over the world, in the PL, CL and now at underage world cup. And who would bet against an African team making the latter stages when they host the senior tournament.

Consols is right. It never ceases to amaze me how the media persist with interviewing (and publishing) the views of utter idiots. Sunday Supplement being the primary example. Who cares what someone who writes for the Sun thinks? While I accept that there are some journalists who can provide detailed insight and be entertaining at times (which is a matter of opinion of course), it would be a much better show if there were other constributors such as respected ex players, managers…..and chaps like me of course.

But then again – I’d probably have to listen to hansen tell me how liverpool were going to win the league – but he’d probably say the same about me ramble on about Arsenal. In hindsight – maybe it should be kept to ex managers and Journo’s!

  179. i dont normally agree with what muppet says but i think his last comment is spot on…

and i also agree with arshenal…i believe that is the biggest difference from last season…

we dropped alot of points last year because we showed a lack of hunger…teams found it easy to get in our faces and stiffle us and it was so frusttrating to watch because i knew we could do better, but at times it seems we went out without a wimper (the CL semi and the games against chelsea are good examples)

i talked last season about heart and grit and passion and i think weve found those qualities this season…

also, with the return of key players( dudu, rosicky) and the consistent good form of other key players (cesc, rvp, arshavin), the emergence of song and the signing of TV….we look very dangerous and our squad depth is not to be laughed at…

we spent the majority of last season using our reserve players because of major injuries to key players….and we still finished 4th…now we have our senior players back and fit we are showing everyone what we can do…at the minute we are proving we are the best team in the PL

we have better squad overall than all of our rivals…we just need the players to keep focas and keep fighting for eachother….

lets hope the players keep showing the hunger and desire, and we will be hard to beat…we have the quality in the sqaud to play ‘super wengerball’…but we need to earn the right to play it first…and i think thats just what we are doing this season and its why we look so beautiful out there…

le sexy football is back and lets hope it stays..

  180. It is not just the press and media. Arsenal supporters make contact through emails, phone-ins etc and their views are a disgrace. Many of the supporters attending games at the Arsenal Stadium are lazy, complacent, whinging good for nothings. Just take a look at so-called Arsenal blogs.

  181. Frank, good summary – sound views as usual. Song was commanding yesterday – he controlled midfield – and not just defensively – allowing Diaby and Cesc the freedom to roam – and Eboue’s backheels/sideheels and general exuberance were worth the ticket price on their own!

  182. Bradys right foot

Kevin Garside is probably the only journalist who actually has tipped us this year. I love the fact we’ve been written off by everybody but i have to agree with Frank that as fans we could be doing better. Oh and the doomers over at the darkside have been having the usual go at Song, long may the pundits and press keep spouting their lazy analysis it makes every victory just that bit sweeter. Its clear guys like Steve Claridge and Stan Collymore have some deep anti arsenal issues hopefuly this will get worse when we win the league.

  183. What standard do you have to apply for it to seem to you that Tottenham have a better squad than Arsenal?

The I drank too much last night, and shat my brains out afterwards test? The let’s bash Arsenal because it sells papers test? The fucking moron test?

  184. Frank, I thought of you yesterday when I was at the game as the crowd started streaming out while it was still 2 – 1 and the team needed us to back them. But I’ve given up worrying about those idiots who don’t realise what a privilege it is to be watching this team. Who knows what the future may bring, so why not enjoy every minute of it while you are there? Despite a little post-international hangover there were lots of good things to see on the pitch. Birmingham only scored because of 1 defensive error. They were lucky to be playing us at that time because we would have slaughtered them otherwise.

And I can’t love Cesc Fabregas more – he had given his shirt to a Birmingham player, but I loved what he did with the captain’s armband. (Abid posted a gif earlier). This young man loves being part of this team and being captain means the world to him. That is the ‘heart’ that is going to win us silverware this season.

  185. The Doomer's Family

    Operation Jelly Bean:

Receiving heavy fire from all sides. All doomers are advised to retreat. Do not surrender. We repeat, “Do not surrender”. It’s only october, and it’s not like we are top of the table. Thank God for that game in hand.

  186. “The decoration on the outside of the stadium is a big improvement.

5% club level.A disgrace.”

That makes me more angry than any of our performances last season. Its pathetic. We have the best squad and football in the world…doesn’t that merit at least half of the crowd to stay!?

  187. I’m writing to the club about this…something needs to be done. Its unacceptable. If they can’t bother to applaud our players then they shouldn’t be in the stadium in the first place. I can understand people leaving early but this was the first match after a 2 week break AND its an afternoon kickoff…surely getting home an hour late isn’t too much to ask for.

Also, Mcleash was commenting on how Brums performance got the crowd a bit edgy…what is it going to take for Arsenal to convince its own fans to have a bit more confidence in the team?! We’re such a sad and stupid bunch sometimes.
