The usual injury concerns emerged following the internationals but compared to previous breaks, this fortnight has been relatively kind. Gael Clichy’s ankle knack presumably means Kieran Gibbs gets the chance at left back with the only other doubt from the last Premier League fixture being Abou Diaby who has this year’s vogue injury, back knack.
Manuel Almunia is supposedly only 50:50 which means nothing when Arsene says it given his previous track record on guessing injuries. Nil desperandum since Lukas Fabianski is apparently fit but to be honest, there would be no reason to drop Mannone purely on the basis of the the Pole’s return.
All the while this is going on and Usmanov procrasturbates, Stan Kroenke has snaffled a few more shares, payment terms presumably yet to be agreed. There is a little anecdotal evidence that this is the prelude to a full bid, possibly next summer, since this was the very action that Lord Peter observed may happen:
It does look like he is edging towards a takeover, which I would welcome. I have not asked him if that is what he plans to do, but I am very relaxed about it.
These days, it seems that old PHW has been very relaxed about everything, possibly because all of the others are running around doing the hard work. He is becoming more like the Spitting Image caricature of the Queen Mother, G&T in one hand, wandering around offering inanities and telling everyone that she was “92, you know“.
How much sway he has in the matter of a takeover is open to debate. It is pure conjecture on my part but I would hazard a guess that if Fiszman said he wanted out and Kroenke was on hand to take his shares on the never-never, there is absolutely jack that Hill-Wood could do about it.
He further observed:
If it was to happen, I don’t think you can expect any big changes because he seems to like things very much the way they are.
Kroenke may well think that things are tickety-boo and hunky-dory off the pitch and of course he is happy since he can see profits to be squirrelled away into his own bank accounts whilst quite possibly servicing loans required to buy the club. In that instance, you have to wonder which of the duo is more acceptable or indeed, if there is any difference between them. And then you remember Sheriff Fatman’s past…
Compared to Usmanov, the American has been quieter in public about taking a dividend out of the club but no-one would be surprised if it happened were he to launch a takeover bid. One possible obstacle might be a counter-bid from the Uzbek but one would hope that they will have the good grace to stop their silly buggers antics until the summer when the season is over.
’til Tomorrow.

PHW has no say and no influence. He is the Board’s mouthpiece sometimes and a loose cannon at other times. But he has a very minor shareholding and thus no real power or influence. You hit the nail on the head though. I’m more concerned that SK might saddle Arsenal with debt (like the Glazers at MU) as he doesn’t seem that keen or is maybe not able to pay cash up front for all the shares. But with his business portfolio and background he can borrow easily to fund the purchase.

The quacks at London Colney must be confused about what to do with their time. The Friday after an international break usually keeps them gainfully employed. Big bad Billy G might give them something to think about when he asks them to check out his toothless mouth. Them damn Pharaoh Islanders…LOL!
As for Almunia, I really don’t buy this “chest infection thing”. Wenger has form in moving players out without even the players knowing they’ve been moved out. Take Lehman for example. After his howler against Fulham that let Healy score in the first game of the 2007-2008 season that was quickly followed by his clanger against Blackburn that led to a goal and a needless loss of 2 points, mad Jens was said to have an elbow injury. This is an injury that persisted even though Lehman played for Germany during an international break. Lehman eventually found himself playing in the FA cup in a 3rd round non-match at Turf Moor. And even at this point, folks thought mad Jens will be back.
I’m beginning to think Almunia has the chest infection version of Lehman’s elbow. Fabianski must be cursing himself out to think that Don Vito Corleone got into the mix while he was playing slap and tickle with the nurses in the recovery room – and he missed a chance to show the faithful that indeed he was the Pole between the poles.
As for Arsenal immenently being taken over, any brinkmanship between silent stan and Uzbek Usmanov can’t be good for the club. It’s safe to assume that both are ruthless at what they do otherwise they wouldn’t be billionaires. It’s hard to see Usmanov rolling over and just accepting a takeover bid from the lesser evil. Arsenal doesn’t really need a game of “let’s see who blinks first”, let alone needing to be sold. The only reason or motivation I can think of a takeover is for the sole owner to trouser the profits after giving Wenger a few bob for a player or two every summer. Billionaire businessmen don’t spend over a billion pounds to buy a club so that they continue not to take dividends.
Like most other board members, Hill-wood is just posturing and positioning himself to kiss the right kind of arse when any takeover happens. You’ll be surprised how kissing arse can be so relaxing for some.

At last an end to the Internationals and a return to proper football, Lets hope we get through this one without the traumas of past meetings
It looks a straightforward three points given our record at the Emirates, but who can tell and a comfortable win with no injuries would set us up nicely for the more difficult games of the next couple of weeks as we continue to fight on three fronts.
As for silent Stan, sooner or later someone will take our club whether we like it or not. On the surface it would seem that the experienced hands of the American are a better option for the club than the fat Russian with his supposedly funny money.

YW, I hope you can see more difference between Stan Kroenke and the fat uzbeki than “being quieter in public about a dividend.” I hope everyone can. There is no comparison, in my mind. One is a legitimate businessman with multiple sporting interests; the other is a criminal.
It is interesting that Almunia’s chest infection has persisted this long. I absolutely think this is akin to Lehmann’s elbow. He is being told in no uncertain words that form gets you into the squad and his is not good enough. There can be no favors for loyal servents in professional football. I would hazard a guess that the job is Mannone’s until he loses it.

Don’t get too happy, Almunia is nowhere near in the same boat as Lehmann. Lehmann was a very disruptive figure in the dressing room at the time. Im pretty sure had Lehmann kept his mouth a bit quieter and respected the managers decision to be dropped at the time, he could have found himself earning another contract.
In Almunia’s case he has done nothing wrong, his form was a bit poor at the start of the season but his performances or mistakes are not in comparison to Lehmann’s. After the Spaniard had a very fine season and barely making any mistakes, im pretty sure he will be re-installed back into the team. When is another question, this could actually just be a real chest infection or another illness, if not maybe Wenger is just letting Almunia know everyones can lose their place.
I think it would be unfair in all honesty if he has ‘dropped’ him because of a couple games, we have seen the likes of Cesc go missing for several games and always retain their spot because we know their quality.
Almunia has proved his quality, and will be re-installed. Mannone is just doing a fantastic job also that doesn’t help his cause.

Agree, but we cannot compete against these billionaires forever, even with our sound structure that we have in place, extra revenues, better stadium..etc we will never be able to match these clubs financially… soon they will all have equally as good or better training facilites, scouting systems,… we must keep ahead.
With Kroenke the board seem to trust him to some extent, he is a sports man also having other investments, he seems to be in it for the success and not just as an investment or to sell us on for a profit.
Its sad to think that we could be owned by one single person, we just got to hope and pray that they respect our club and keep going what was started.
As much as Man City and Chelsea fans were excited about the mass investments of foreign money, i would hate the day it actually happens to us and decisions are being made from within by people who are not Arsenal. The board must keep intact.

Me thinks that there’s no way Wenger can drop Don Vito now, Fabianski has just come back from injury and needs time to integrate himself into the team to even understand the new formation. As for Almunia, he will need to “pull many rabbits out of his gloves” in training to be given another chance in the nearest future.

Chris Gooner.
I’m not happy or sad or emotional in any way for that matter regarding Almunia. I’m just stating that Wenger has form.
I do concur that it’s harder on goalkeepers because any dip in form on their part results in goals against us, while an outfield player’s poor form doesn’t necessarily lead to a goal.
My position is simple. We need to play the goal keeper who is currently in their best form and is playing with the confidence the team needs to go forward. I have no problem whatsoever if Almunia comes back and shows he is no.1. Equally, I have no issue with Fabianski or Don Vito or Tech 9 being in between the sticks and doing the job properly.
However, I have a problem with playing a goalie in poor form, regardless of who they are, if one of our other goalies who is playing better is sitting on the bench. Maybe Wenger just needed to remind Almunia what time it is and Don Vito has served that purpose impeccably.
I sincerely hope both Almunia and Fabianski had sleepless nights over the last month with nightmares from just thinking of losing their place to Don Vito. That way, they both know they have to perform at 100% and not take their positions for granted.

As he wouldn’t get involved in the day-to-day managing of our clubs, he wouldn’t have no affect on our chances of winning. I disagree. I think it’s already become unsustainable. Even Chelski are scaling back.
I blame the media for all this nonsense because they create the image that some teams have inexhaustible resources. They say that the Man City owners for example have access to £500 Billion.
You might have access to £500B but I simply dont see them spending even £1B on the club. People within Citeh have leaked the sum of £0.5M as their budget.
I think we can compete if we keep doing what we’re doing, we step up our commercial side so we take the most possible out of brand Arsenal.
I don’t see the rich sugar daddy+crazy spending model as sustainable. It just isn’t

OleG – I agree, but just because a practise is unsustainable doesn’t mean it will be discontinued.
I do think that there is enough evidence to conclude that a lot of the encouragement for people to invest money from outside the UK in British football clubs is political.
Bit of a post that got mod’d yesterday:
Kronke does like to own sports franchises.
Forgetting about “Arsenalisation”, how would people feel about the “Americanisation” of AFC?
I don’t even know what Americanisation means. America is a big place and quite varied. But I do know that if Ashburton Grove ends up anything like Lords, I’ll have to eat my AFC beanie.
Don’t know what the link is between Lords and Kronke is, but if you throw Comedy Stanford into the mix I’m sure it’d be possible.
Stanford, now there was a sign of things to come if there ever was one. A giant intense flashing neon alarm signal. That left one blind and deaf. Says on the BBC that Birmingham FC, owned by ? now have £40M to, er, invest in the club, not weird, inflated agents fees or anything like that.
How I wish we had some scaly Caymans with their jaws locked into our club… the Caiman croc’s preferred method of hunting is to drown it’s prey first, and devour it later, at leisure, I think.

Spot on Ole Gunner.
I also have a question for Chris Gooner and others.
Is the assumption that if a single owner takes control of Arsenal , money will actually be pumped into the club for the purchase of so called Galacticos players? I think there’s an assumption based on the M.O of Abramovich and Abu Dhabi Investment Corporation that a sugar daddy will without question unleash their “sugar” on the club they buy.
These guys will have already spent at least a billion pounds buying the equity. Even the Glazer’s and Hicks and Gillett are watching their chickens come home to roost as the folly of their “cheque book” team development is laughing back at them. They can’t even buy any substantial capital items without the say so of the banks that foolishly financed them. Any money made from gate sales, merchandising and TV rights is being recalled by the banks.

FC Arsenal of London is a reference to the new football clubs set up by Wimbledon and Manc supporters who objected to the destruction of their dream clubs.
In the Wimbledon case their club was basically sold so that someone else could take their place in the league, MKDons. So they set up AFC Wimbledon and started from the bottom in non-league football. They will soon be playing in the league again.
In the Manc case, supporters who objected to the sell off of their club have set up FC United of Manchester and like Wimbledon have started again in non-league football.
I admire these supporters. They are true football supporters and remain faithful to their clubs even though businessmen have taken over their original clubs like cuckoos in the nest.
FC Arsenal of London is my response to single ownership of my club.

As far as I am concerned this club is AW and the current squad, including the youth team. The home of football is London Colney not the Emirates.

The heart and soul of Arsenal was Highbury. Kroenke, Usmanov even Gazidis, don’t understand that….not really. Fiszman doesn’t either otherwise he would not have presided over the building of the new stadium and sponsorship and funding arrangements. Doesn’t matter what Fiszman says…he is first and foremost a businessman and an Arsenal supporter second. That is just not good enough.

Arsene, with a big smile on his face, has just been telling the press about how Arsenal are about to dominate European football.
Hoorah!
Groined: pr. ‘Groyne-d’; or to ‘groin oneself’, is to nobble, tweak or crock the abductor muscles of the inner thigh. Other commonly used terms for this affliction include Crotchinitis and BFSS, or Beach Front Seperation Syndrome.

It isn’t about renaming the club, it is about setting up a new club. For me Arsenal’s true history started with Highbury.

@Frank.
I must say that I agree with you entirely. Single ownership has proven to be the death of many sports teams…in America especially where some teams have been driven into the ground by owners who have decided that they don’t care about winning or who have simply lost the plot entirely.
In Kroneke’s defense…the Denver Nuggets have always been what, say Hull is this year. An awful team that only barely justifies playing at the top level.
Since Kroneke has taken over, the Nuggets have systematically worked their way to being a perrenial threat and have shown themselves very willing to spend money to get the players needed to win it all. I don’t know if any of you are basketball fans but LeBron + role players of real quality over the last years have brought them deep into the playoffs and really one game from the finals. Kroneke’s response to that performance was to go and get Shaq…who may very well be that extra piece that can get them a championship ring.
I’m not defending the idea of a single owner…but from what I’ve seen with his other pet project…we probably could do worse.

We will win the EPL and the ECL this year….if the club remains in multiple ownership and success acts as ECT on the supporters then there is a possibility the soul of the club will not be lost. So much depends upon this season.

As for the takeover talk I really hope that SK manages to buy Ursunov shares and that’s it! I really dislike this Ursunov guy as like Yogi pointed out we don’t know where his money is coming from, even in Russia they don’t even know where his money comes from. Therefore the questioning about him is resonable he could be trying to do money laundering!!
As for SK at least we know more about him, some comment said that his teams don’t do well but the Denver Nuggets in NBA are a well run club, maybe not winning but they reach the play-off every other years. As for the other teams I know shit all about Hockey so I won’t commentate but the MLS outfit seems to work better that LA Galaxy where good old beck is playing every now and then and close to reach the play-off according to arsenal.com.
In definitive I just hope it is a plot from the board and SK to push Ursunov out of the club. The current shareholders would be stupid to sell them away now as Arsenal is a club that generates money and therefore good dividends.
Almunia might have had the influenza H1N1 from what we know but I don’t think it is a plot by Arsene to kick him out of the club. He is a good keeper and I think Manone interim will be a good kick in the arse and he will come back strong!
Nasri to come back for the Liverpool game in the CC is great news! I think he will slot in the place of Diaby next to Cesc as he has the technique, the defencive game and the goal scoring ability!
By: gunnerluc on October 16, 2009

One thing that might help with the ownership issue is the situation at Liverpool, West Ham etc…degenerating further, to the point where people are too scared to copy that model. But with the likes of the new unknown owners of Birmingham, Notts County, Leeds etc… & the, er, non-politically/oily influenced purchase of Portsmouth, things seem to be moving in the other direction, in spite of the fact that it is not a sustainable mechanism.
Therefore, it is correct to say this season is critical. The pressure to sell will only continue to increase, winning trophies perhaps perversely, perhaps logically, is the best way to preserve the Clubs status.

It is a form of grief….and that is why our support has been lamentable. Grieving supporters find it very, very difficult to dominate the superfical twats who squat in our stadium. Is it our stadium? The colours are right, the players are right, the game is right. Doesn’t feel right though.

It is too close to Highbury, abid. I think complete separation would have been the best bet. It is almost as though the Board were frightened to make the ultimate move. We are no longer in Highbury so why pretend. The huge site behind Kings Cross would have had us in an even bigger stadium right in the centre of London. If we have to go corporate then we should have done it in style.
Too late now though, we need to make this place our own.
Single ownership though scuppers that… I don’t really see the difference between playing in, say, Stan Kroenke’s stadium or Wembley. Still playing in someone else’s stadium. The home of Arsenal and therefore of football is now London Colney, at least until we supporters are given a chance to make the stadium our own.

I’m just laughing at our arch anti-Arsenal pundit Mr. Stan Collymore reflecting and trying to justifying his stupidity following his comments after the England game on Wednesday.

Our own, Darius.
We have done this all before…but I start with;
1. Clock back inside the stadium at the clock end (we took our clock with us is the message)
2. Let us have real names for the other sections
3. Real efforts by the club to help us get the seats filled for the whole game
4. Get rid of club level
5. Paint out the big picture windows around the outside of the stadium, or open up those areas to ‘ordinary fans’
6. Adorn the stadium with Arsenal stuff. Graffiti would be great
7. Have market stalls on the podium around the stadium
8. Get rid of the Emirates
9. Make the food and drink outlets identifiable, some as pubs with Arsenal ‘names’
10. Let the supporters put together a band to lead the singing
11. Put on a show before the game. We used to have the marching band. We could come up with something better.
12. Above all listen to the supporters. Stop fucking patronising us.

Frank. The spat between Collymore and Bruce is about the award of MOTM to Beckham. Collymore obviously thought Bruce did a Nobel Committee and prematurely awarded Beckham the accolade.

The move to Kings Cross was a real favourite in the early stages. Though besides the obvious commercial issues there were objections on the grounds that the club would then be in Camden rather than Islington. The obvious benefit was that the land was being cleared anyway as part of the Kings Cross and St Pancras developments and the Channel Tunnel link. There are probably a million reasons for that initiative to fail.
Personally I thought the Wembley idea was also a good one, on the grounds that we were losing Highbury anyway. I have many family connections with Holloway and other parts of Islington and love the area, but we might as well have made a clean break. Just as Norris did.

@Frank.
Your ideas are good and I’ve not only discussed some of them with you e.g. the Legends pub names, but I’ve seen them discussed elsewhere.
However, I doubt if venting this out up in here will in any way influence the decision makers to work any faster even if they were already working on it.
I know for a fact, some of your suggestions are already in the pipeline.
I suspect though, that we’re stuck with the name Emirates stadium for another 4 years. They’ve already paid up.
As for the market stalls, are you a prospective market stall owner? I’m just trying to understand your persistance with this issue.
I have no doubt the clock is on its way back, and the grafitti will take the form of murals possibly of Arsenal legends.
Those big windows with Chino and polo shirt wearing non singing supporters tucking into their prawn sandwiches and pies really gets to you, huh?
I don’t think club level is going to disappear any time soon though, though its possible that the chap on the PA can be convinced to let Elvis leave the building with that song.
But like I said, why don’t you pop over to Highbury House or write Mr. Gazidis a letter with your concerns, and demand a response as a fully paid, card carrying member of the Arsenal.

YW, I know. I just get frustrated when you don’t slag off the Uzbeki more! It was a cheap shot, mea culpa. I am frustrated by anyone comparing Kroenke and Ushmanov in the same paragraph. As I see it there is no comparison and can’t be.
As for the board and the management of Arsenal. I lack the perspective so could someone with more knowledge let me know how the management of Arsenal fits in with other owners/boards in the PL? How many clubs are private and how many float shares? How many have family history with the club like that at Arsenal?
Gunnerluc, thanks for correcting Axis. The nuggets are a credit to Denver now after many years of being, I would contend, even worse than Hull-like. I can’t stand basketball but it is good for the city to have a basketball team they can be proud of after a long time in the woods. The Colorado Avalanche are also owned by Kroenke and they seem to finally be on the right track in terms of spending and patience. They were dominant before the salary cap but found out when that was instituted and the star players got too old. Now they have committed to rebuilding the right way and are punching above their weight this year. The “soccer” team the Rapids are also doing well this year too.

Well, thats what the Arsenalisation is for isn’t it?
But, I feel that it won’t become “our own” unless and until we win a trophy. That will allow us to settle down and reflect on victories at the Grove as opposed to consistently reflecting on our trophies at Highbury. This stadium needs a spark like that no matter how hard people try to decorate it.
It will feel a lot more like our Stadium in the coming years…I’m sure about this. I can’t speak for everyone but I really love this squad…every single one of them. Even that perplexing Diaby and Manual “chest-virus” Almunia hold a soft spot. All we need is for these boys to win, shut those stupid doubters up and give Arsene the satistifaction of watching his grand poject succeed.

It’s not that I prefer Jabba to Stan. I think that if the club is going to be sold he deserves to have his story heard. What I do not accept is that just because the Board says that Stan is the Man, the fans should just accept this. It has been clear to me for a while that Fizsman and the Board are ONLY interested in getting out for the most money. Stan must be made to tell us his plans for Arsenal before he acauires a controlling interest. Inside the club only Arsene has the moral authority to pubically question Stan ob his intintions for the club. I hope he does that. Gazidis is too new, and Hill-Wood isn’t relevent.

Abid,
I would just like to add that the history of Highbury was not built in 4 or 5 years…it’s a history built over 93 years or so. We have to allow time for the new stadium to become the fortress it should be, without forgetting our history in Highbury. We make the stadium what it is as fans, we have to believe this is our new fortress and make visiting teams realise that, regardless if we won a game or not, won a trophy or not.
By: Gunner4Ever on October 16, 2009
at 5:12 pm
Clichy said in an interview that the new stadium still needed ‘bedding in’ and he was excited to be a part of that process, I think.
It’s like when you move into a new home, it can take ages for it to feel like ‘home’?
Agree with the above points and suggestions, though mistakes were made, and may be made in the future, it’s not an irretrievable situation.
By: Finsburyparker on October 16, 2009
at 5:17 pm

I agree G4E and Finsburyparker, in the meantime, and during any ‘Arsenalisation’ that takes place, it’s down to the supporters in the ground to hold their heads up and make it a fortress. Sing up and be proud, like Gael Force, to be part of the bedding-in process. We are so blessed with spectacle, skill and beautiful football -it shouldn’t take anything more to have fans stand up and sing til they’re hoarse in the throat, in celebration and in support of the team.
