Beware Of Greeks Bearing Gifts & Money

It seems somewhat appropriate that the club announced its financial results in the run-up to the second match in this season’s Champions League. For all of the mithering that comes out of UEFA about the debt levels in English football, they actually have handed to them on a plate, the template for a financially sound club. Platini and his mob will not use it though, for to do so will put them in a spin since they firmly believe that all clubs should be debt-free.

More on that later though. The matter of the visit of Olympiacos takes precedence over this. Injury news once more to the forefront of the team selection. Nicklas Bendtner met with Q and believed that his Aston Martin had been fitted out with the latest Bond Gadgetry, an elaborate wind-up courtesy of Emmanuel Adebayor who realised that he had not continued his feud on the pitch a couple of weeks ago.

The momentum picked up in the games since the return from the last international break is slowly building. A win tonight and that continues in much the same way that the twenty-one game unbeaten run sparked into life earlier this year. The difference is that this time wins are replacing draws.

As it is a home game, an attacking line-up could be the order of the day with Eduardo, Arshavin and van Persie the forward trio. An alternative would be the introduction of Tomas Rosicky instead of Arshavin. It seems unlikely that Wenger would go into such a match without at least two strikers.

For the rest of the team, there should not be too much tinkering. Perhaps Diaby will make way for Ramsey but with four days to recover before the Blackburn fixture, there seems little reason to make that many changes to the line-up. I would expect Wenger to go with:

Mannone; Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Clichy; Diaby, Song, Fabregas; Eduardo, van Persie, Arshavin

A win this evening is emminently achievable and would set the double-headers with AZ67 nicely. Two more wins in those clashes would see qualification surely achieved and let the team have ambitions to win every game. That is, however, to get ahead of myself – three points tonight is all that counts.

So to the finances. The property development is dominating thoughts and does not necessarily provide the solace that some have sought. The report mentions that profits from the redevelopment may be transferred into the football club but there is no guarantee that it will do so. Too much is read into this statement. It is covering themselves, reassuring the lenders that they have no intention of using the cash from the property side until the debt is cleared.

Crucially, the loans on this project are a relatively minimal level One of the biggest criticisms is that this development has prevented Wenger from spending. What is apparent that having replaced the buyer of the biggest tranche of flats, the club can move the prices to market levels and return a profit, albeit smaller than the original forecasts.

Frequently, the board has spoken of the need to retain the services of the existing squad. Taking into consideration the increase in the valuations of the players registrations on the balance sheet, the extent of this policy can be realised. Removing the purchases of Vermaelen, Arshavin and the minor deals last summer, it is not unreasonable to estimate that of the £41.3m increase, £10m of that is due to contract renegotiations. That is a sizeable commitment on the part of the board, equally so of Wenger’s faith in those players.

The subject of wages continues to perplex some, failing to grasp that the figures relate to every employee. Trying to guess what portion relates to the squad is futile. We simply do not know and every attempt at calculating it will be based on false assumptions and therefore produce falsehoods as answers. Is there an argument for knowing what the club spends on it’s playing staff’s salaries? To a degree yet the commercial sensitivities of that information far outweigh any righteous indignation felt by supporters that the information is not in the public domain.

And still the media proclaims that there is a huge transfer pot awaiting the opening of the cheque book. Surprisingly, the highest valuation I have seen this morning is from a journalist who is normally sane regarding football finances. In this morning’s Guardian, David Conn added the profit of £23m on player trading to the £42m received (not the profit) for the sales of Adebayor and Toure. Apparently, this total of £65m is ‘nearly £80m‘. So not only is the £80m wrong, the £65m is calculated by adding apples to pears, the outcome being bananas.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Great post YW… always the most logical perspective of Arsenal affairs I ever read

  2. 1st and 2nd!

  3. ChrisGoona has a valid point:

“the £65m is calculated by adding apples to pears, the outcome being bananas”.

… very nice. Keep ‘em coming YW.

    Love x

  4. 3rd and 4th!?

  5. Great stuff YW. Love your headline.

    Anders!

    You’re my hero.

Personally I would love to see this line-up tonght…

Though I appreciate that Rosicky, not yet 100%, cannot offer as much energy and defensive clout as Diaby can. So Diaby’s inclusion is the sensible option I guess.

Hope Ramsey and Vela get on at some point too.

  6. Is that you I see on Arseblogg anders limpar! i’m trying to behave over there, Arseblogger came hunting for us regarding the Ade poster issue previously!! 1st time im really commenting there though..

YW dont worrry ur blogg is still #1!

  7. I don’t pretend to know the first thing about Greek football, but this guy posting on Untold seems to and he expects a tough game….

“Its not secret, Greeks will play 10 players behind ball, and coming closer than 20 meters from their goal will be reprisal of WWI battles in Verdun.
I tend to know a bit about Greek football, so I expect all except easy victory, away they play rough, muscular, always on edge of yellow card, without hesitating to play dirty if necessary. Even after we score, they still wont open game, and wont try to equalize, they will in a fact close even more and try to preserve defeat smaller as possible.
I see this game as opportunity for Arshavin or Rosicky, who don’t hesitate to try luck from greater distances…”

Spot on.,. i do suspect that Gallas maybe rested for a certain Swiss bald bloke

I would like to see RvP behind Eduardo too.. or all 3 rotating during the game. Rosicky i think will start.. Diaby hasn’t done enough really. Not that hes been awful, hes had 1 man of match, but with Rosicky he breathes class for 90mins.

  9. LimparAssist

I live in Cyprus and I dont even follow greek football.!!.

I catch a game every now n then, tactically they are awful some teams. The teams from Greece seem to be able to shut up shop, and attempt to do it often in the Champs league. I remember we had a tricky game at Panathanaikos a few seasons back.

  10. The curse of the injuries continues but at present there seems to be enough bodies to throw into the mx.A home win followed by a battering of Fat Sams mutant hack merchants will top the week. tonight promises to be another tough game but given that Olympiacos have not won in England in 27 attempts that says it all really there for the taking and maybe a run out for Theo.

With Denislon sidelined for 2 months it will be an opportunity for the much maligned Diaby to eventually come good. Eboue, Hleb and Denilson have suffered the same empty ‘whats the point of having him in the team’ jibes. Upwards and onwards.

  11. We should win at Home, away they could pose to be a tricky test. But we should qualify by then ( I hope of course!)

  12. I may be being harsh on Nikclass here, and I thank god he escaped with such minor injuries, but crashing an Aston Martin hardly does wonders for an already mildly ridiculous image.

  13. ChrisGoona:

Yes, that is me over there on Arseblog. It drives me up the wall in a way that is a bit like a self-inflicted pinch on that tender bit of skin under the eye above the cheek. Must be why I get a twitch (though I am not a Spurs fan ;) ) Thanks for fire-fighting me there. Of course ACLF is my favourite, though I have not posted in a long time. The reason I go yonder is because what is said over there is pretty paramount to how it affects the ‘impatientienté’ (impatient).

LimparsAssist: Good line up. I know I am your hero.

    Love x

  14. Hmm, I am expecting based on what I am hearing here to see another bus parked on the edge of the box. Sure we will score, but just in case, maybe we could carve a Trojan Horse and put Eboue inside.

    NB: I love Eboue.

LimparAssist: Don’t worry too much about little Nik. I lived in Denmark for a year, the Danes are a great bunch of people, but their driving is a tad scary.

    Love x

  15. Wenger made one mistake yesterday…he showed us which team will play tomorrow..let me explain..the clips of the team training yesterday on skysports had players in yellow and blue…the players in yellow were

vela, rvp, AA, diaby, rosicky, cesc, gibbs, silvestre, TV, sagna and ???? i didn’t see the keepers…

blue was song, eduardo, eboue, ramsey, gallas, wilshere, walcott, traore…

i think the yellow plus mannone is the team playing…..

  16. anders limpar

no worries mate.. I also felt like posting a similar comment there, I just have to stay away from such arguements for the time being and let the team on the pitch do the talking.

Im pretty confdident they will prove to all these fans that Wenger was right to trust in the players. We have such a quality squad.

Shame though Denilson is out for 2 months. I think it gives Ramsey and Rosicky more game time.. we have options never the less, even Diaby can fill in. I suspect someone will step up and give Denilson a real battle for his spot.

  17. Flex Mauto

Interesting… thats hardly conclusive though mate, Eduardo could start unless he was injured for the last game? Anyone know why he was out by the way!

I would put a bet on Gallas getting rested though, and i think Rosikcy is a certainty to start. Wenger cant keep holding him back. He seems itching to play

  18. ChrisGoona: I agree, we have players itching to step up, and let’s hope they can, as well as prove that Wenger’s faith to them rather than spend is justified. I firmly believe it is. Let’s not forget Samir will be back beofre Denilson too. Anyone remember when we tried Samir in the DM position last season. Any opinions on that? I have a sneaky feeling he may pop up there once or twice (or Wenger has considered it) as the African Nations Cup taking Song away for a wee bit and Denilson’s back injury is starting to look serious. Anyway, I am liking the choices in all positions his season.

  19. “Fat Sams mutant hack merchants”

Speaking of which, has anybody come across an alarming 8ft high poster of this repugnant monster on the Underground, for The Times?

It features a terribly distressing image of the giant lout in question, seemingly mid-cardiac arrest. If you can stomach this monstrosity for half a second it provides some wonderful opportunities for photographs. I’ve gone for the simple yet timeless double two-fingered salute – but there’s plenty of scope for the more imaginative amongst you to really go wild.

  20. Chris, I hope your wrong, I have 5 pounds of the wife’s house keeping riding on Gallas scoring at some stage tonight.

  21. Strange when a player who is expected to be in the squad and doesn’t feature, Wenger normally gives an excuse about lacking competition or some other undefined ailment..

Yet when he’s been asked about why Eduardo wasn’t in the squad against fulham, he has completely ignored the question by merely alliterating that he will be available tonight..

Does anyone have a plausible scoop about why Eduardo was not in the squad to Fulham?

  22. Perhaps he just wasn’t picked?

  23. anders limpar

“I am liking the choices in all positions this season.”

I have to agree.. we have suffered numerous injuries already yet our performances have still been good. 2 losses could have easily ended in a better result for us.

6 games played – 4 being away games – 3 against top 5 or 6 teams. Lets see how them teams fair when they come to the Emirates, they can expect a harder game than we gave them when playing at their own homes.

  24. One won’t ever know how much Wenger has to spend. We know the minimum…Zero. We know the maximum, and it’s probably a similar number to what David Conn estimated.

But thinking of the number and splitting hairs over it can be very misleading and can cause a lot of unnecessary angst.

I think it boils down to, how much of a squad revolution the Manager and board think we need.

If you don’t accept that the manager and board should have the right to decide this, but think that pundits and fans should decide it, you will have a lot of problems with the club.

If you believe spending big is the solution (something that hasn’t been the club’s way in recent decades), then you will be unhappy for a long time.

  25. Kingsalami

sorry haha … you never know, if hes a late sub he may still come on and score off his right nipple!

  26. Out of interest, does anyone know the actual date when George Allison took over as Arsenal manager (officially)? .con says June 1934 but a few other places are suggesting it was 28th May. Now it might only be a few days difference but it means AW becomes the longest serving manager on Monday next week, not this week as is being suggested in the press.

  27. Ole Gunner

Agreed, its not about spending money, its about bringing in quality if needed. We have Ramsey, Wilshire, Merida, Gibbs, Vela, Walcott…. and all the other young guns who are tipped for big things. They are being groomed to play the Arsenal way, they will have years of experience with each other by the time they make the 1st team.

Some wont make it, but the best will. If we go out and waste money on signings which are to satisfy fans who think we need to spend so the papers get off our back.. then these very talented youngsters will be blocked in their process. We have a philosphy which is paying dividends financially and on the pitch.

6-0 versus Sheffield United is something that should be looked at closely, all the players were from our 2nd – 3rd choice teams (being from youth or reserve or bench players). If this is their capabilities now or last year even, imagine what it will be when playing together with experienced Internationals like Cesc, RvP, Gallas, Sagna… as they all age and as we keep as many as possible we will be unstoppable.

The signs are their this season… i am fascinated every game to see how this current team performs, and im itching to see the likes of Ramsey, Wilshire, Gibbs, Merida all get involved.

  28. anders limpar

on Nasri : His willingness to track back is a great attribute, he also has the ability to nick the ball but his awareness defensively is not at the level required as in the few times he played in CM gaps were more apparent for mediocre players to drive through in last years system which had more mid-fielders to provide more cover.

Nasri admitted he loves playing in Cesc’s role as he receives more of the ball and it allows him to better display his dynamic passing. Bentner believes the dribbler who deceives defenders the best in our squad is Nasri, when he played on the wing he showed these qualities and a deceptive burst of pace.

Rosicky on the other hand has more experience in central mid-field (both internationally and prior to Arsenal).. Nasri is well suited for Cesc’s advanced role this season but the further he plays back I fear the greater loss as a creative outlet doubling with a loss of defensive stability..

I don’t see him as a Defensive Midfielder although his tracking back helps to relieve pressure..

  29. Kitchen Sink

I think Nasri and Rosicky are quite similar, both able to deceive players, both good passers with good vision ( i would rate Rosicky superior in this field because of his exp ), they both can score too. Technically i would again say Rosicky is better right now, but Nasri has the potential to match or better Rosicky. We will see, im a fan of both players, and i think both can cover Cesc’s position or the wide midfield positions. I just can’t picture Nasri as a defensive midfielder, he has that creativeness and attacking instinct which you would think means he should play further up.

You just never know, Henry never thought he would be one of the best CF’s

Wherever Nasri or Rosicky end up playing this season, they are players that you want on the field. They keep the rythmn of our game going and in a 4-3-3 we can acommodate them better.

We have pace in Vela, Walcott, Clichy, Gibbs.. we have creativity in Cesc, RvP and even Eboue, we have strength in TV, Song, Nikki B.. just the ability to hold onto the ball and kill teams off by starving them of possession is needed i feel.

Them 2 players give us that advantage along with Cesc. Its very rare you see these players losing the ball.

  30. Kitchen Sink:

Interesting points, and I agree with everything you have noted. It is just a curiosity as to why he was played there last season in Wengers mind:

Was he played there; a) solely as temporary cover (which was needed at the time), b) the boss thought he needed to work on his defensive game, c) It is something he sees as curious in the boy.

I suppose we will never properly understand why he was played there. However, it is c) that makes me curious too as we all know he likes a bit of a nip at the ball (as you pointed rightly out) but we also know of Wenger’s ability to see more than meets the eye in a player. And Samir Nasri is still a fairly malleable player. Perhas not as much as, say Manu Petit from LB to DM, but still… curious stuff should we get bitten by injury.

I for one hope we start seeing real solid partnerships in midfield forming, much like Barca’s Keita/Toure, Xavi, Iniesta trio. I think Rosicky, Nasri, Ramsey, Cesc, Denilson, Diaby can all contest for the Xavi and Iniesta roles with gusto!

  31. OG

Conn’s figure has to be wrong because his rationale in reaching his number is illogical – why add a profit to the transfer prices received? Surely, you add two of the same types to get to answer. More to the point, £15m difference is a tad too much to claim ‘nearly‘!

Bandying around figures of that magnitude when he has no real evidence to support them feeds misconceptions amongst the fanbase, some of whom consistently agitate for big signings.

There can be no argument about who has the final say on signings. The manager should identify the targets, the director(s) make the deal happen.

    YW

  32. agreed ChrisGoona

just one niggle ..after winning the World cup at such a young age , what makes you think “Henry never thought he would be one of the best CF’s”

  33. YW

Allison took over as manager at Arsenal at the end of the 33/34 season (May 1934). Not to sure if is was the end of may but the last game was around the 5th.

  34. YW

It must be May 1934, read he purchased a player then

  35. OG and CG.

Great points. I think the brain washing that has gone on unchecked has convinced scores of fans that spending is the only solution. For one, there isn’t any consideration that it takes time and effort to find the right mould of player, and even if you do, they have to firstly add value to the team, and secondly, be affordable.

Breaking the bank to appease punditry is just stupid. Spending wisely to refresh the squad is something Wenger will continue to do. Vermaelen, Arshavin, Nasri, Eduardo and Rosicky are only but examples of quality players who Wenger has brought in to add value to the squad he was already developing.

It’s a real shame that winning trophies at all costs is seen as the be all and end all for some fickle fans. Of course, I would like Arsenal to win trophies sooner rather than later, but not at the cost of crippling the stability of the club. Besides, would we be happy if Wenger put on a strong team and won the Carling cup? It’s something that will make our chances for silverware greater, but clearly the CC is not what folks have in mind. However, the experience that the young guns get through the CC is invaluable and you couldn’t buy it anywhere if you tried.

  36. well said anders limpar Wenger knows each player better than any of us..

On your point about Barcalona, I think that if we can learn to be as patient in retaining possession they are, to the point where the opposition become scarily more comfortable with us having the ball than they do, we will surpass them. We have the potential for a greater direct approach then they do.

If the sides met it would be the grandest display of football ingenuity..

  37. chrisgoona

i disagree with you once again cause you said that: its not about spending money, its about bringing in quality if needed, and what quality are talking about cause all i can see is that, you really have to face the truth and see the light rather than hiding in the dark all you life.and let me tell this cause football this days has changed dramatically cause all you can see is people spending money and using it in an appropriate way. and if we dont spend and we stick wih our youth development project which isnt helping at the moment then we will never succeed as a team. cause wenger said that a new player sometimes changes things around and that example will be vermaelen and arharvin offcourse.

  38. Kitchen Sink

Very true, maybe Henry and Wenger did.. but nobody else could have guessed it.

  39. gooner2

Please learn how to speak, and more importantly use commas and full-stops!!

  40. Who is arharvin?

  41. Arsenal fans choose a young player to pick on each season. Don’t worry Diaby, just knuckle down. By next season it’ll be Merida’s turn.

  42. YW – Technical point on the accounts. TV was signed on 19 June and these accounts are to the 31 May, so his value will not be included in player registration figures on the balance sheet, but will include the values of Adebayor and Toure (who hadn’t left at that point). AA will be included in the figure, having signed in January. It also will not include teh effect of wage deals and contract extensions agreed after 31 May, which includes most of the major ones I believe. We will have to wait for the November interim figures to see the impact of all of these (probably annouced Jan/Feb).

  43. chrisgoona

everyone makes mistakes and its not as if you havent made one before!

  44. @Gooner2.

    This may help you.

    Lmao

  46. steve

i appreciate your help but i wont need it coz i will be just fine.and let me tell this chrisgoona cause you seem to have lack of understandings things and dont say my english is crap blah, blah, blah.and both of my parents are english and i should had told you this ages ago.

  47. Nick

Don’t disagree with you – the only issue becomes, I guess, when transfers were concluded. The announcement to the press may well have been a different date to that which the contracts were signed.

If TV isn’t in there, the impact of Adebayor’s last contract increase was even more financially scary than it seemed on paper at the time!

    YW

  48. A young man crashed his car and escaped with minor injuries when he might have died. There is no suggestion of alcohol involved or any other stupidity. He simply spun off the road.

It happens. Good news that he isnt hurt for all teh non-football reasons.

Miles Palmer using that as an excuse to dredge up old photos of his only previous indescretion and lambasted him is a disgrace. HE DID NOTHING WRONG. Palmer is c$nt. He is not half the journalist that bendtner is a football player. Nowhere near, NB will play with the best of the world at what he does. Miles writes a half arsed blog and some self serving music articles no one gives a toss about. He needs to show some dignity and humanity.

  49. Newsflash:

    Arsenal destroys football:

The London club is not only content to destroy the beautiful game by marginalising Andrey Arshavin and inventing ‘diving’, they are also turning in record profits.

Football is the only activity in life that nature has exempted from the necessity to generate surpluses, and this has been the principle on which the English game is based.

By making £35 Million in after tax profits, Arsenal has shaken football to it’s core. Arsenal fans are enraged that their club makes money.

Key Arsenal bloggers reacted manicly to the news this morning, and insisted that if Arsenal were closer to bankruptcy they would win every trophy in sight. And they have a point. It is a well-known fact that for football clubs, the more skint you are the more nature rewards you with titles.

Pundits and hacks are not taking the matter lying low. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, & Tottenham are winning 3 trophies per season while Arsenal win nothing.

Key pundits have pointed out to Arsenal fans that not winning trophies is a serious threat to Arsenal. What use, they say, is a football club if they do not win trophies?

The FA taking cues from these esteemed founts of wisdom have announced that from next season, all the clubs not winning titles will be disbanded, and all their fans will be forced to become chavs, spuds, Arabs.

To save our national sport, the BBC has successfully petitioned the government who have announced that Arsenal’s profits will be seized. The funds will be used for the acquisition of Glen Johnson (£18 Million) and Darren Bent (£16 Million).

Arsenal fans will be overjoyed to learn that Arsenal will immediately win the league and Champions League when the money is spent.

  50. arseneholis,

Leaving football aside. What we see is that Myles Palmer is a disturbed person.

Myles Palmer is not half the man that Bendtner is.

  51. Warning! Criticisim of Wenger coming:

I think Arsene does his team no favours by continuing to call them young. I think it’s wrong that he says it so often.

  52. I’m a fan of Arsene downplaying expectations and subverting hype by playing the young team card. The longer we are underestimated the better. It won’t last forever.

It’s not like it has an adverse effect on the players. They know they’re young, but they also know they are good enough as Wenger reinforces his trust in them time and time again.

Each individual has also found himself in a squad that represents some of the finest young talent in the world, looking around the training field every day must be a constant reminder to each that they are the best in the land.

  53. YW – I agree that the last Adebayor contract will have been scary; as a result it will probably show up as a lesser than expected profit on the sale of the player as much of the value of the contract will have been capitalised.

I would be reasonably confident that the date that the deal is annouced would match pretty closely (a day or 2 out at most) with the conract date to avoid any accusations by PLUS Markets that the Company was not keeping its shareholders adequately informed.

Moving on to tonight’s game, I think some of the “first team” that didn’t start on Saturday will get a run out tonight:

    ————-Mannone—————–

    Sagna—–Gallas——TV—–Clichy

    —–Cesc—–Song—–Rosicky—–

    —–Eboue—–RvP—–Eduardo—-

With Ramsey, Walcott and Vela getting a second half run out.

  54. i think tonights game will be a very tough game indeed.but if our players walk inside the field confidentlly then a victory wont be hard to predict.

    chrisgoona

denilson is shit as i said the day before! and we wont miss him cause he offers nothing to the team beside an average performance week in week out.

  55. Nick, that looks good for tonight. I think Arshavin needs to play himself into form though so for me he should start.

Also, maybe Gibbo deserves a start. He was outstanding against West Brom. I guess we’ll go with Gael tonight as it’s a crucial game, and if we win tonight, maybe Kieran gets a start in the remaining Champs League home game.

  56. DNFTT!!

I am hard pressed to imagine a lineup without Rosicky and Eduardo in it for tonight. Not just because I’ve got both of them on my CL team but because the CL seems to be where Wenger prefers Eduardo to play and for Rosicky to get match fitness and time. At least on current evidence.

I hope that Clichy/Gallas/Vermaelen get a breather at some point. Sagna just had one and Gael got one at Portsmouth so perhaps tonight one of the CBs will get a rest. Just because it’s Fat Sam’s shite army this weekend doesn’t mean we won’t put our strongest team out to crush them.

  57. gooner2

your hilarious… keep the jokes coming

  58. Arsenal the Great

Diaby is under attack on every blog. Fans should just get use to him because that position has been designated for for years but for his injuries.

Diaby was earmarked to replace Gilberto and got injured and Flamini took it with both hands. Again, he was to replace Flamini but his injury problems pushed Denilson forward however, Denilson is not the replacement for Flamini; he’s okay but not great.

Diaby has been off the pitch for a long time that this has affected his development but he’ll come good eventually. Arsene will continue to play him until he comes good which will definitely come this season. He’s naturally so good to fail. He’s the new Vieira.

Get use to it, Diaby will play today and every week end unless he’s not fit.

Arsene sees him as the guy who’ll make our midfield tick with Cesc.

  59. I do think tonight is the kind of night you play both Diaby and Eboue. They are both tough players, and euro refs are less likely to allow the tackles from behind on Diaby. Also, while I don’t quite rate them as top Arsenal class, that’s because they cannot raise their game against the very best in the world. They have the talent, but not (yet?) the polish and decision making at speed. But against teams with limited offensive options, their talent is enough to take them through. They’re precisely the kind of players Arsenal needs for a game like this.

  60. What tripe.

Arsene has at his disposal a host of midfield options, all viable and all ready to come in and tick.

Diaby is one of those options, and so is Cesc.

  61. ChrisGoona

i get that alot on the fact your calling me hilarious cause i dont know if you mean that cause you seem to be sarcastic about that or am i wrong and so prove me if you really really mean it

  62. Yogi, can something not be done about the little troll roaming around?

  63. AtG – I agree that Arsene has great faith in Diaby, that he will get a lot more playing time this year (assuming fitness), and that he is a player of much talent. I don’t agree that he would necessarily get the nod over Denilson. I think that they are both viewed as key components by Arsene, and both have been nurtured despite much criticism over a similar period of time.

Diaby has more on the ball talent than Denilson, and is more athletic, but Denilson is a much better reader of the game. He is the classic Deschamps’ style “Water Carrier”; the unflasshy player who keeps the ball moving and stops the other team playing the way they want to. As someone posted yesterday, perhaps he is more valuable in away games than at home.

We play a lot of games (and seem to get a lot of injuries) and I think that Arsene would like to be able to mix things in up in midfield; I think both players will get a lot of playing time this year.

  64. Arsene playing down expectations? You mean how he always says we will compete and challenge for the tittle but somehow mysteriously end up scrapping for 4th place.

  65. Arsenal the Great

Going by his comments and how he brought players in before… you could say that he has higher hopes for lets say Ramsey.. He protects the lad more, doesn’t play as much, and praises him when necessary. Diaby is good, but wenger isn’t blind not to see the mistakes he makes. He aint as bad as many make him out to be, the guy has made appearances for France, its just a matter of being patient and getting the best out of him. Wenger praises him because he feels he needs help off the pitch.

The players that play now are the ones which are ready, like Eboue, like Denilson.. they are good players but maybe Wenger is just trying to protect the up and coming players who he thinks will turn out better end products. If he gives Ramsey a few games now, he might end up being forced to play the young lad week in week out which could turn out to be too much for him and ruine all the work that has gone in to building the lads confidence. Just look at Walcott, Wenger was demanded prior to every matchday to play the kid. Wenger resisted for the most part of a season and eventually he became a 1st teamer. Nobody can say Walcott hasn’t improved a great deal.

  66. In fairness to diaby…everybody thinks he is shite but how is he doing Statistic wise?

    5 games…2 goals…1 assist.

    Viva Denilson.

  67. David

What about when we won the league and Fa Cup all those times.. and went on an unbeaten run.. was that playing down expectations too??

Are you even a fan I wonder?? Learn how to support you spud

  68. Errr…Walcott hasnt improved a great deal.

  69. Nick

That was my point earlier, alot of our “ball carrying” players get injured.. Nasri, Rosicky, Cesc, Denilson i would class as that.. these players keep us possession. For our style to work properly we need at least 2 of these players on the pitch, some speed (not the drug!), and some technical or creative ability to open up defences.

  70. oh the cretin called me a spud. how fackin predictable.

  71. David

“Errr…Walcott hasnt improved a great deal.”

You know the readers on this blogg are quite intelligent mate, we dont all believe what we read in the Sun you know.

Every Arsenal fan that actually sees the game for what it is and ignores the media crap will tell you how far Walcott has come. Obviously you aint one of them

  72. ChrisGoona

    Sheep arent Intelligent.

  73. David

    Who do you support?

  74. David

    Who aree yaaa??

  75. Sheep ask dumb questions too.

  76. A dumb question… no question is dumb, its how you aknowledge and answer the question. You fail at doing so…

Are you a spud, will you admit to it, or am i wasting my time….

    I sense another James here

  77. I think it is high time Rosicky played 90 min.

  78. I mean seriously Eduardo got fit into the team quickly.

  79. Ok David change the subject… u carry on making crappy statements without backing your comments. You will surely get a response from someones else, good luck !

Im off… 5-0 to Wengers Red n White Army!!

  80. Walcott needs to score some goals. This should be a win for the Gunners. Everyone is hurting. When government taxes companies to death they find ways to survive. It’s call free enterprise. The free market always works. It’s ECON 101. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  81. The worst thing about stupidity and stupid people is that stupid people dont even know they are stupid.

    Hence they are doubly stupid.

    …”no question is dumb”

Isnt that the height of ignorance.

  82. David,

Did we not compete for the title in 2007-2008?
Has Arsene Wenger not won 3 league titles and 4 FA Cups? Is this not a team competing for the title again, here and now?

With such a short-termist, melodramatic view of the world, you must either be incredibly new to it or have an incredibly short time left on it.

I sincerely hope it’s not the latter, but if it is, not to worry, you may yet get to see Arsenal win a trophy before you depart, just hang on until May before it’s “Goodbye cruel world! World that dealt me such a blow as to make me an Arsenal supporter, pity me, pity me! Goodbyyeeee!” *splutter*cough*spontaneous combustion*

Oh dear, David the Impatient has died.

But we won the league again!

    So, every cloud…

  83. A lil dramatic dont you think?

No need to bring out the acting skills to make a small point.

    3 league tittles. 4 FA cups…

That was during the David Dein days..when we were Arsenal FC.

    Not Arsene FC.

  84. david

i hear you mate cause arsene always states the same shit year by year and which leads to nothing at the end of the day.but if he stops lying to us and tells us where the fuck has the money gone then i would be hapy to hear that outcome if its to come.and i know most of you here might say that the money goes to paying off the stadium blah blah blah.but my question is where is the money profit which we made from selling kolo and adebayor gone?
and i think the board have something to do with this money which i think they sharp it up their arses

  85. gooner2

We have money. Shed loads of it.

We just happn to be dealing with the most tight fisted manager alive….who doesnt believe in purchasing defensive talent.

  86. @Gooner2

    Are you stupid?

Arsenal’s financial statement from 2004 is freely available for public consumption, find it, read it, and you will know where the money has gone.

  87. David you to? Isn’t Vermaelen, Gallas, Toure, Campbell, Sagna etc… defensive talent?

  88. “It’s not because I’m against spending money, I have nothing against spending money. But I do not spend money because out of tomorrow’s squad is [Samir] Nasri, [Theo] Walcott, [and Nicklas] Bendtner.”

“And yet people want me to buy strikers, but where do I put them? I don’t know. I have to then lose players, who, for me, are world class.”
“If by December we need to buy someone to add to the squad I will do it.”

    —————————————

Doesnt sound like someone who takes defense seriously.

    As i say.

Sheep are incapable of thinking for themselves.

  89. I think that Tomas Vermaelen is on course for being the best defender that this club has seen…ever. Looking forward to watching him this evening.

    ….Arsenal….

  90. TV and WG are the best central defensive partnership in the EPL.

    …..Arsenal…..

  91. The trolls don’t really rate him Frank…I mean he’s not Megatron or anything…

  92. Ah well, their loss, axis.

We get to enjoy watching the best two central defenders in the league this evening.

    ….Arsenal….

  93. Still devastated for Denilson’s injury – he was always on the pitch giving his all, so it just feels so weird that he’ll be out for so long.
Here’s hoping for his full and speedy recovery.

  94. Wengerball…

We didnt purchase Gallas and Campbell.

Just thought you should know that before you call someone else stupid.

  95. This megatron thing, axis?

  96. Actually we did buy WG and Campbell. The fact that they were out of contract and came to us for buttons just makes it better business.

  97. Therefore I think you are stupid too, David.

  98. @ David, you should then be grateful that those talented defensive players were on our books for nothing.

Tight-fisted yes, but I’d rather he’d not spend £17m on a Glen Johnson just to appease people like you.

  99. wengerball

    financial statement?

fuck that cause i dont believe in that crap.cause thats the only way wenger tricks people like you thinking we have financial problems and which we obviously dont have.cause we have money but wenger is to damn stubborn to open his cheque book and sign players that are needed at this stage of the game.

  100. how do you buy a player thats out of contract?

You know what coming in on a free means right?

    Or a swap deal?

    You think i am stupid?

Dont think too hard there frank.

I dont get what is up with people and their infatuation with liverpool on this site.

  101. Thanks Gooner2, you’ve confirmed my suspicions.

  102. Stop grizzling, gooner2, we are about to enoy a fantastic game of football this evening.

    …Arsenal….

  103. You are a fool, David.

  104. The only two teams on the minds of Arsenal supporters today are Arsenal and Piraeus.

    ….Arsenal….

  105. Im a fool because Im informed?

Wow…what a come back. Almost lost for words.

Say there frank…how many buttons do you pay to breathe air?

  106. You watching the game tonight David?

I hope it cheers you up.

  107. Where do these guys come from….?

  108. I have a sneaky feeling that Wenger will have the whole team doing step ups for the next few weeks.

  109. I predict we win 5-0

  110. Actually in biological terms breathing air comes at an enormous, incalculable cost. Just the start of the process took more than a billion years for small organisms to convert the atmosphere to one which contains oxygen. There was then the evolution of sophisticated respiratory processes, not to mention unfathomably complex metabolic systems and the development of specialised organs.

  111. Is this David the ex-Marine?

  112. Oh you missed me. How you figure that out…did you lot go into the animal kingdom to do your research again?

  113. France isn’t a kingdom any more.

  114. David.

Forgive me for being a bit slow. What are you actually bitching about? It’s hard to understand from the intellectual masturbation that you’re indulging in up in here.

  115. I not hard to understand cuz im not bitching.

Seems you are a bit slow.

  116. …and they’re off…

  117. It’s sad to see real fans who are genuinely concerned about the club’s general well-being getting as slammed as sheep and all sorts of other nonsense by a bunch of glory-hunters and hanger-ons who take it upon themselves to ‘free’ the supporting majority from the ‘oppression’ of the board and manager.

  118. Ah well im leaving all that botanical scientific research to the pundits.

Last i checked i dont have anything to do with France…but you’re clearly the expert.

  119. But I guess that happens to the best clubs only =P

  120. thanx for that harnet I feel your pain… now lets get behind our boys and take it to the top..

    __arshenal.__

  121. Right I’m off to the game. Anyone not looking forward to this little beauty can go fuck themselves.

    ….Arsenal…..

  122. I may well be slow David, but the fact that you don’t even realise that your incoherent attempt to articulate a point that you clearly have a problem with clearly comes out as bitching from someone more comfortable with name calling and insult because they can’t get their point across eloquently.

I’d rather be slow every day of the week and twice on Sunday, but then again, any straw poll up in here will quickly put to bed any notion that Darius Stone is a slow fella.

Again, I simply ask for you to elequently express your frustration with Arsenal FC so that we can have a meaningful debate. I would truly welcome the opportunity to illustrate how its possible to put a point of view across without insulting people.

  123. What happened to the fight between David’s marines and the regulars at DukeGoonem’s local pub?

  124. Who won the coveted pink beret?

  125. /…wondering if starting verbal spats online is really that much fun…/

  126. Song wins it, knocks it to Fabregas…flicked on to Rosicky who cushions it down to Van Persie….drops the shoulder, turns…back to Rosicky, touched on to Arshavin, clipped through to Eduardo…who nutmegs Olaf the Viking…piroettes (sp) through an assorted selection of greeks, plays the 1-2 with Rosicky (he’s everywhere), lays it back to Vermaelen on the edge of the area who pings it against the bar, intentionally, to set up Willy G, diving in at the back stick, who gets some unidentifiable part of his person to the ball and it’s there! 1-0 to the Arsenal inside 5 minutes.

    Let the samba football commence.

  127. Arsenal played a reserve friendly with Olympiacos, I suspect that was the game Wenger said he’d organize for Theo.

Arsenal 3-0 Olympiacos. Walcott played I’m not sure how long he lasted though.

  128. Theo got 60 minutes

  129. Nice move, LimparAssist. It’s great that Bendtner isn’t involved. Whenever I think of him getting injured in that car crash, I just can’t stop laughing.

  130. During the last week, the only thing that has afforded me more joy than Bendtner’s car crash is the thought that Denilson might lose his place in the team because of his back injury.

  131. /…why not give it a go, then report your findings back to the rest of us…/

  132. The review of the match says Theo provided the pass for Sunu’s goal and made an “eye catching contribution” to the match.

  133. I still think Man 1 needs to go out on loan.

  134. ArsenalArseneArshavin

poliziano,,, and you call yourself a fan???

  135. I know, AAA, it’s shocking what some people get away with.

  136. ArsenalArseneArshavin

one thing I would love to know about Wenger is, if he goes to expensive restaurants with his family? Or does he prefer cheap restaurants ?

I know he earns lots of money now but still.

  137. I have lunch with Wenger once a month. We don’t go to expensive places, although that is perhaps partly to accomodate me.

  138. I doubt that Poliziano…Wenger has money but he is wise with it that’s all

  139. Wenger is on record as saying that he follows the same regimen as his players. No rich food or alcohol. He does not go out as he is obsessed with watching and thinking about football.

  140. ArsenalArseneArshavin

poli I’m trying to understand the man. He is very tight with money. It might be his educational background that tells him that money should be spent wisely.
I don’t think he is against spending big if you get value for money. But then who is available now for a reasonable price who is also quality??

  141. You might be right, G4E; but it would be typical of Wenger’s tact to suggest restaurants that he knows will not strain the finances of his companions.

  142. If Theo played 60 minutes today, will he play tomorrow?

    Maybe a half hour?

  143. I agree Poliziano, he is very considerate…

AAA…Wenger is the answer to today’s economic disasters. If most of the financial people in control of the economy were slightly as responsible as he is with the money, we would be in a better place. But greed, reckless spending, and no risk management got us where we are now.

It makes me proud that my club still competes for the highest honors, still makes profit, without a sugar daddy, and still without lowering any standards. This is how Corporations & Big Companies should be run.

  144. Well, either Arsene is telling fibs or Pz is…

  145. I don’t think Wenger ever claimed not to eat.

  146. Well, I suppose he might risk an espresso.

Mind you, I’d put nothing past a man who reuses to spend £17 million on Glen Johnson.

  147. He usually has fruit juice or mineral water with his lunch. I’ve never seen him have an espresso.

  148. After Liege I expect the whole team to be fully switched on right from the whistle.

I’m looking forward to a dominant performance with our attackers defending from the front when we do lose possession.

  149. @Poliziano

We’ve already got too many “professional” beligerents on this blog…I guess I just envy your ability to engage them without getting totally fed up.

  150. Poliziano drench them with his wit
Muppet hangs them to dry with his sketches
    CBob…whacks them with his plow
And Frank finish them off in ways I can mention here…

  151. - I Can
    + I actually Can’t

  152. Hello
    Helloo
    Helloooo

  153. RVP….Click Click Click….. click click…click cli

  154. Get ready for an RVP masterclass G4E.

  155. Belligerent ; from the Latin (and, earlier, Greek) ~
    Bellos ; God of WAR!

And in many minds, small and narrow perhaps – Bellus is their god.

    OM

  156. Looks like Eduardo and Vela on the bench, RVP/Arshavin/Rosicky up top with Cesc/Diaby behind and Song cleaning up. Back 4 – Sagna + Eboue.

    Strong lineup!

  157. I’m all eyes and ready to watch LimparA

  158. and Moanhinho is probably crying right now as Inter could only draw 1-1 with FK Rubin Kazan. That is poor in my opinion.

  159. is Sagna on the bench?

  160. cmon you Gunners!

  161. Any one with a stream please? I’m at work…no soapcast or Tv ants

  162. Ponyboy! Where you been?

    ARSENAL!ARSENAL!ARSENAL!

  163. Sagna is on the bench notlager, with Senderos, Ramsey, Gibbs, WooCash, and the aforementioned Vela and Eduardo.

  164. thanks Gris.

Can anyone tell me why the Inter game has started earlier than the other CL games?

    Come on you Gunners!

  165. @ponyboy

Was there really a God called Bellos in antiquity? Ares and Mars, Greek and Roman respectively, I thought. Always happy to be enlightened, though.

    belligerent
    from “bellum” – war
    and “gerere” – to wage

    *****

    COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!

  166. any streams people?

  167. Isn’t western Russia -2 GMT? Its already 11:00 pm there. No wonder Inter and Kazan are done for the night.

  168. A R S E N A L

  169. text feed I have makes it sound like Arshavin is walking on water.

  170. I’m watching somebody who is watching the game…..technology these days!!

  171. Come ON Fabregas…this should’ve been a goal.

  172. JustinTV flaked out after 1 minute. Oh well , just have to depend on the FSC replay at 10:00 pm. Thanks G4E.

  173. http://www.justin.tv/laffaloud

Try this one Shotta…a guy watching the game..

  174. It’s like watching a game from 1961

  175. We need a goal

  176. Fiorentina 2, Liv Insolvent – 0

  177. Even Justin tv is targeting Arsenal games

  178. Great stuff from Arsenal so far. Elsewhere, Fiorentina leads 2-0 against Liverpool at home with two goals from Jovetic. Pool has zero shots on goal so far, and here I seem to remember that the pundits thought Viola would pose no problems for them :D

  179. Thanks Chamakh

  180. Well, if we have played a better first half than that, I can’t remember it.

Bloody brilliant football. If only David Bloody Platt would shut up. Oh, and one of those wonderful moves ended up in the back of the net.

    ARSENAL!ARSENAL!ARSENAL!

  181. CBob – I wish I could second your motion but as always you have my proxy vote.

  182. It sure reads like a cracker Consolsbob, can’t wait to watch it tonight on FSC.

Eduardo to come on for Rosicky or Arshavin at some point I think. He’s something different and a home goal here, even just one, is vital.

Can anyone who is watching please tell how big a parking spot Olympiakos has made in their half?

  183. I’m only listening, not watching, but how are we not 5-0 up?

  184. To be fair Gris Gris, they haven’t had much choice. We have pinned them back for the whole half. they have tried to break and could actually have scored.

Tell you what though, i don’t think ‘parking the bus’ will work against this kind of offensive power.

My guess would be Eddy for Thomas at some point. The maestro is not quite upto speed at the moment. That’s perhaps churlish. All eleven have been superb. Vermaelen can organise a defence like no Arsenal player since Tony.

  185. As perhaps we have seen before Fun, one goal might bring a lot more. the finishing has not been the best but the play around the box has been breathtaking.

  186. It must be murder as the ESPN stats show 68% possession for The Arsenal.

Come on you REDS! The flood is building, knock the damn dam down!

  187. Sorry, that stopped working about 2 seconds after I posted it.

  188. Finally PaaulN – a feed that is holding up.

  189. Eddy coming on.

  190. Tomas coming off

  191. Any one got a Guus Hiddink for the game????

  192. Kool Shotta!

    Eduardo will nik a goal!

  193. One goal for us, I hope you mean…

  194. feed down.

  195. grrr!
I said this before many times, we need to work on that finishing. Over the past few games its all that’s been missing!

    Come on Arsenal!!

  196. Love AA’s effort today, on both sides of the ball.

  197. Bob, Can you commontate for us please??

  198. Eds to score!

  199. When he should be banned.

  200. Oh..shit i have been warned for trying to comment to fast! thats a first, my typing must be improving.

  201. Same old story, Duke. Vela coming on though.

  202. Their keepwe has 71 on his back. Must be the number of saves he’s made.

    Diaby off.

  203. GOAL!

  204. Van Persie

  205. Robin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  206. Eddy cuts back for a poke in.

  207. He always comes up with the goods when we need it

  208. Blood-claat Goal to the Gunners.

  209. come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  210. Thats being dirty for Cbob.

  211. Has Diaby been sent off Bob??

  212. No, Diaby subbed off for Vela

  213. “Perhaps the most deserved goal ever” is the way it was described on the text feed I’m following.

    LOL! About freaking time!

  214. OK, Consolsbob, you promised me lots of goals now that one has gone in :)

  215. Is Eboue doing well at RB, btw? It sounds like he is.

  216. Don’t blame Cbob for lack of goals. The Greeks should mount Niko, the goalkeeper on a statue for his performance.

  217. I’ll settle for the one this time, Fun!

    AA pretty good tracking back.

You should hear what consolslel has to say about that, Shotta!

    Robin off, Ramsey on.

  218. AA!!!!

  219. 2-0!!!

  220. Goal of class! Arshavin.

  221. AA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  222. You kept your promise, CB!

  223. Offside indeed but a nice fick, piece of skill by Arshavin.

  224. Bit slow there, Fun. Experience over youth I suppose.

  225. I suppose to you girls, a few extra exclamation marks makes your post cooler.

  226. Offside??

  227. Vela is class. This young talent in one team is simply amazing. But I am biased.

  228. Dudu wins a corner for Olympiacos???

  229. Nah, the more exclamation mark the higher the pitch – that’s me screaming, basically

  230. Different Dudu, Duke. This one plays for the Greeks.

  231. is the game over?

  232. You are very graphic, Fun.

    All over.

  233. Right , off for a greasy kebab!

  234. How long before the replay is on ATVO? Anyone know?

  235. Sorry not replay, but you know what I mean

  236. Ateeb, my Brother! Where are you?

Not letting the bastards grind you down I hope?

Ponyboy. Only one post a week? Better upgrade your internet package.

    Come on!!

  237. Excellent performance. Everyone gets at least a 7.5.

    FAB IS BACK!!!!!

    RVP’s scoring again.

    All is well.

Now to bash Blackburn on Sunday.

  238. That was an amazing display of total football.
Our defense was a thing of beauty!!

We are back to our early season form!

  239. RVP will tear up the PL this season, he’s just gettin warm!

  240. I’m sure they’ll say thank you, Scrooge.

  241. Two points:

    - To all the doomers who were saying that Arsenal were playing the property game and caught a cold. After yesterdays announcement of £31 million profit – Ya boo sucks

    - Eboue was brilliant tonight

  242. Sounds like it was a great game, I only watched like 5 minutes at the begining of the second half.

Now the hard par starts, having the patience to wait until 7pm to watch the game.

  243. Muppet,

Is Eboue playing his best football in an Arsenal shirt?

  244. Yes. He looked mature tonight. Long may it continue.

  245. OG – All the long scapegoated players (Song, Eboue, Diaby in chronological order) who have been hung, quartered and dried by the self-appointed experts, were big tonight. ACLF was one of few places where there was a semblance of unbiased appraisal.
    Trust me, Arsene Knows Best.

  246. I agree, Muppet. Those more mindless moments have gone from his game.

  247. Lovely stuff!!!

Passing in full flow…that goalie single-handedly kept this from being a 5-0 drubbing…amazing day he had.

The “AA” battery looks recharged, almost completely fit…cheeky little behind the leg flick. I ALMOST felt bad for the keeper; letting in a highlight reel goal like that after so much work all game long.

    The boys looked happy…

Problem: We played better, more fluidly, when Diaby left the pitch. He has wonderful flashes of skill but he holds up play…side-note: Song was awesome.

  248. You’re blatantly biased, Shotta.

You think we are the best team and Arsene is the best manager.

Just what kind of supporter are you?

  249. Song was fantastic tonight wasn’t he?

I’m really happy with the performance.

Think back to the Fulham, West Ham or Sunderland games last February.

I think this is the kind of game we’d have drawn then.

Now we’re keeping clean sheets and we’ll grind teams down.

  250. Poor old Merse, According to him, we need a new centre forward and a centre half.

  251. You’re blatantly biased, Shotta.

You think we are the best team and Arsene is the best manager.

Just what kind of supporter are you?

    lol

  252. C-Bob,

I bet he wakes up in the middle of the night muttering “big do-min-ant cent-re half” always in cold sweats.

Always prompted by dreams of Wenger’s face when he told him he was going to be sold.

  253. Oh, I forgot William Gallas. Late last year and earlier this year he suddenly became a poor defender to many. Now he is the rock who forages forward when it is required. What I saw of him tonight he was a monster. I loved Kolo Toure but compared to Gallas, he was always an accident waiting to happen.

  254. “I bet he wakes up in the middle of the night muttering “big do-min-ant cent-re half” always in cold sweats.”

    ha ha!

  255. Yes – I heard that Consolbob.

Not a lot of faith in Eduardo, Arshavin, VP, Walcott, Vela and Bendtner to score goals then.

Bit of a bizarre comment ! Since all of the above players are all basically strikers. (Or in the case of Walcott will be in time).

As for the centre half comment, does that mean he doesn’t rate Gallas or Vermaelen ? Or does he mean as cover ?

  256. We played some wonderful stuff with Diaby in the game. The only thing the first half was missing was a couple of goals, the play was so fluid the whole match, regardless of who was in.

  257. Bob, you are right. Do you know how often i am accused of being a blind supporter of Arsene Wenger? I will declare that we are lucky to be witnesses to one of the greatest modern football managers that we will experience in our lifetime. The team he is rebuilding without the resources of his contemporaries (Mourinho, Ferguson and Benitez) will be recorded in the future as a virtual miracle. Yet our club as Tony Attwood emphasized not only was stupendously profitable but the biggest ever turnover of an English football club.

  258. I think he is just remembering the mantra that keeps him in a job, Muppet.

The joke is, Ole, that merse made a complete prat out of ‘big dominat centre halves’ himself!

Give it a rest, Shotta. Your allegiance is just so obvious. Be a bit more ‘objective’.

  259. So pool got a serious beatin

  260. CBob – You keep me in stitches. How much vino did you have tonight. LOL!

  261. We are jolly red and white giants, walkng the Earth with gunners. These are great days.

  262. PaulN – You saved my bacon with Iraqgoals. They made a magic transition from Greek to English.

  263. Why do we have to endure the same pessimistic drivel from Merson and Platt about Arsenal. How were all Arsenals attempts on goal directed at the keeper and poor finishing. From where I was standing it looked like the keeper and the bar played a blinder.Very good performences from the whole team. Only Adams gave a balanced view

  264. Bugger, you got me Shotta! Best part of a bottle of sangiovese, actually.

  265. @Paul N

You’re probably right…We were incredibly fluid throughout the first half…the whole game really. I just get so frustruated with Diaby. He gets hesitant/indecisive at times and it makes me crazy. I will retract my Diaby comment.

  266. Actually Gooner4Life, Merse wasn’t pessimistic. He thinks we have a good chance of winning the champions league. Conversely, Platt has the charisma of a parisian toilet attendant, and shouldn’t be on TV.

  267. Glad to help Shotta!

  268. Speaks for itself. I am currently under the weather. taking meds but this game was just what the doctor ordered.

  269. Ooh I really feel for the Sky commentators and dear old miserable as fook David Platt. They were willing an upset and we wetn and blew it for em.

    Sorry guys.

RvP is really getting into this leading the line, being the front man role innit!

And yep, Eboue and Song were great too.

  270. He is really ugly. You are right Muppet. Thing is his voice is really irritating too, so radio is out. Maybe he should try managing, perhaps be ‘fast tracked’ for the England job?

    Oh!

  271. Anyone know what the difference between the old Arsenal players…All the ex-English ones slag us off(exept Ray) and it’s only the ex foriegners that dont. Why is this??? answers on a post card please.

  272. Well guys, what will doomers complain about tomorrow? Just wondering.

  273. Muppet;

Haha! How gloomy is David Platt? The man should not be let near the cutlery drawer.

  274. I fancy – Too many shots on target?

  275. I thought Platt was fast tracked for the England job at some point, or was it slow tracked ?

  276. @Shotta…

Only our strikers scored today…no goals from defense. We’ll never make it.

  277. We need to spread the goals around more. We are way too reliant on Robin.

  278. He was, he was. What a delusional bunch the FA are.

  279. Yup…Mannone didn’t even have a shot on goal today…pathetic really.

  280. Arsenal the great

Bye bye Almunia. We’re winning without conceding now. Thank God.

    Bye bye the Spaniush pretender.

  281. Fuck off, Howard.

  282. Anybody see the Liverpool defence part like the red sea for the 1st goal ? That won’t please the defensive master Benitez – LMAO

  283. The Great Tit has spoken.

  284. We should be beating teams like Olimpiacos 4-0 at home. I’m gloomy, we’re doomed.

  285. Doomers beware. Be more creative tomorrow. No warmovers, please.

  286. I am really pissed off with doomers like Ole not realising that there is no C in the Greek alphabet.

People like him believe everything they see on Sky.

    Pathetic!

  287. I laughed so hard to see that one Muppet. Jovetic said open sesame and Liverpool let him in.

To be fair though, the way refs are applying the offside rule these days, it’s stopped making sense.

  288. Whats happened to old Wrighty then? he is now doing a tv show with a couple of dumb co host’s chatting shite. So not much change from his duties on talksport then.

  289. C-Bob

You have to tell me why they’re called “Sky” then? Don’t they have celestial command of the truth?

Next thing you’ll tell me God lives in Milton Keynes and not high up where Easyjet doesn’t reach.

  290. Reports I’m seeing is that Arshavin inspired Arsenal win.

Cesc’s mom and Robin’s son will be mad.

  291. Arsenal the great

Mannone to keep his position against Blackburn; on and on till his No.1 position is cemented.

    Thank God for the Don.

  292. Or untill he makes a mistake and you call for his head.

  293. That was some lovely football.

Thought the ref had a great game too!
Watched the game outdoors on a projection, no commentary, with a Fulham fan who made more noise then many Arsenal fans in appreciation of some of the football played tonight. Came indoors to hear Merson moaning about the lack of a CF & CB in the squad?
    Top performance.

Pz- Sorry I couldn’t reply till now, I must have misunderstood your post yesterday, but as said then, it was not important. More interesting was the performance tonight, a classic!

    COYG!

  294. Seems old Merse has forgotten to take his appy pills today.

  295. Yes yes yes! Scintillating performance. Great entertainment. Strongest starting line up in years I’d say. The whole team fired.

Fungunner, Spike, – Eboue was extraordinary. Different class.

  296. “Or untill he makes a mistake and you call for his head.”

    LOL Duke…you nailed it.

    F*ck Off Howard.

  297. Arsenal the great

Mannone don’t just turn up like Almunia, he makes a difference.

You saw his latest save? Almunia would have let the ball in.

Almunia has a long way to get cured of his chest infection.

  298. Howard you have proved you know nothing about football with your past comments about Song and Denilson.

Now as everyone keeps telling you. F*ck off.

  299. Dammit, I can only hope footytube will havedecent highlights for me in the morn. Sounds like it was a fantastic game. Well done to the players.

And A I the only one that wants to hear Ray Hudson commentary?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS6Np-g_h5w

  300. LimparAssist,

I was thinking too that that was probably our strongest outfield team out there, give or take a Sagna or Denilson here and there.

  301. I’m just back from the game – it was absolutely excellent. Every single player contributed tremendously, with outstanding performances every where you looked. Olympiakos have to be grateful to their keeper and the post for keeping the score down. Even the crowd in my section were excellent as the game wound down without a goal from us, instead of the usual sighing and cursing, they were actually roaring the team on and practically blowing the ball into the goal. What a relief when the goal our performance warranted came. RVP is starting to kick on and the return of our pacy forwards will really help. This has been one of the most enjoyable games I’ve experienced at the Emirates, even more so than some of our easier and higher scoring games. I really enjoyed that.

  302. So glad to hear about Eboue’s performance. And I’m now looking forward even more to seeing the highlights.
    ‘Night, all.

  303. Finsburyparker, as beautiful as RVP’s right toe, love in infinate measure is what I have for you right now!

  304. Arsenal the Great will plainly disagree with me, but for it to be our strongest side, Almunia plays in goal.

I would pick Denilson too, as you say. At Diaby’s expense.

Eboue though, reminded me tonight, just how good he really is. Not only as an attack minded, creative right back, but as a proper defender (though he attacked to great effect). His decision making was spot on. His calmness under pressure, unquestionable. He played a flawless game. And it’s not like he had nothing to do. He was tested, he just kept passing each test with flying colours. Absolute quality.

  305. To Ole, btw

  306. I see the ‘scapegoat de jour’ Diaby is getting criticized again around the blogs – he also got some stick from one or two in the crowd around me, but I actually couldn’t see what they were complaining about. He had a good game and made no more passing errors than Arshavin for example. The only difference was that he didn’t bury his header and Arshavin scored a goal. It’s amazing how people see what they want/expect to see.

  307. And for the rest,

    try

    101greatgoals.com,

    can’t post the link.

  308. What a great game Passenal. Wish I had’ve been there too.

  309. I agree LimparAssist, Eboue was fantastic tonight and there was one piece of skill he used to get out of a tight situation, that was just breathtaking. I think as his confidence grows, we will see more and more from him. I remember Bendtner saying that some of the things he does in training are reminiscent of Ronaldinho!

  310. Ronaldinho at rightback!

    ARRRsenal
    ARRRsenal
    ARRRsenal

  311. Night all. Sweet Red & White coloured dreams.

  312. “Ronaldinho at rightback” Now that would be a nightmare.

  313. Eboue was defensively solid tonight, but if he has got Ronaldinho-esque attacking skills in his locker too, he could surprise us all!

  314. That was proper bus parking from the greeks, it was really furtrasting but it was a matter of time.Great performance from the lads but that cannot be said about the fans they were really disappointing and the stadium was empty with few minutes to go.

  315. I think Eboue should get a lot of credit for sticking around after being “shamelessly” booed by his own fans.

That shows great character. desire, and respect for the shirt he wears….not like some weak spirited someone I won’t even mention his name.

    For you Eboue:

Stiff-necked fools, you think you are cool
    To deny me for simplicity.
Yes, you have gone for so long
With your love for vanity now.
Yes, you have got the wrong interpretation
    Mixed up with vain imagination.

So take The Sun, and The Moon,
And Stupid fans, and Super Stars,
And forever, yes, erase your fantasy, yea-eah!

The lips of the righteous teach many,
But fools die for want of wisdom.
    The rich man’s wealth is in his city;
The righteous’ wealth is in his Holy Place.

  316. Simply a treat..

The patience, precision, the movement .. desire, quality ..

Really starting to find the difference now, 1st half was mesmerizing, quick clever passing softening them up till they’re mentally drained .. reminds me of the 07/08 season..

from the defense to the attack Top Draw ..What a joy it is too support such a team..

    ___.Arshenal.___

  317. We should’ve won by at least five or six. I thought the team as a whole played some pretty good football. There was a spell in the second half where Olympiakos didn’t cross the half way line for a good five minutes.

The stand outs for me were Song, Vermaelen and Eboue.

  318. Great stuff from the Gunners tonight, a little sharper in front of goal and it could have been double figures.

    Eboue was fantastic tonight

  319. Can’t imagine what it must’ve been like at the Emirates. Just watching the highlights makes me nearly cry. So beautiful….our boys are just amazing.

Here’s to more games like these through the season. Arsene once said that you live for moments like these. The brief seconds where everything clicks into place. We got to see that magic for a full 90 minutes.

And as a bonus, the all the whinny dunces have had to shut up because our performance today was beyond criticism.

  320. 4th place is ours City

A fully fit Arshavin and we are a 10% better team. They guy is someone who truly can be called world class. How many players in world football could have scored that type of goall last night.Memories of Henry

  321. Mean Lean

Yes Eboue was good last night but look at the quality of the opposition. Would you play him against any of the top 8 in the prem?Sagna is the best right back in the country.End of

  322. Both Mr Arsenal and the Merse said it on tv last night the CL is easier to win than the Premiership.I agree. And this season we have the Russian maestro pulling the strings. How good was that goal.

  323. Am I mistaken or is Arsenal hitting a bit of form, just when we would expect, about 9 games in?

The standard of play was exhilarating. Some of the shooting was a bit iffy, but it was their 38 year old keeper who kept it below 5 or 6.

Song is the man. Missing Denilson though.

  324. Rex, I doubt Mean Lean was suggesting that Eboue should replace Sagna, so why can’t you just let him have some praise for a good performance without looking for a reason to denigrate him? We are lucky to have 2 right backs who bring different things to the game and in the right game Eboue can be excellent and give Sagna a rest so that he is available for those crunch games when we need to be more defensively solid.

We are not going to win anything with just 11 players, we need the rest of the squad to make their own contribution when called upon.

  325. Rex,

Would you play him against any of the Top 8 in the country?

Delusion is your name. Olimpiakos are the Greek champions and they’ve been in the Champions League for 8 years, and have a very good manager.

  326. Listen Andrey, get in the box, and score an outrageous backheel. Capisce?

    http://u.nu/5kfd3

  327. I would happily play Eboue against any of the top 8 in any country.

Last night’s performance gives AW a very nice problem to solve at rightback.

Eboue for player of the month anyone?

  328. Preempting Pyles Pampers:

Arshavin is like a young George Best, without the prostitutes. Only he would score with an outrageous backheel like that.

30 years ago, I went to the newsstands and my mate told me he’d seen George Best knocking balls into the goal off his arse.

When Arshavin did that, I was excited. Andrey brings sexy back.

He did not let Diaby ruin his game. When headless Eboue crossed with a ridiculous backheel that slow coach RVP should have scored, Andrey thought; Messi would not have done that. Iniesta would not have done that.

Wenger’s pampered babies beat the Greek champions. Can they beat Blackburn?

  329. LimparAssist,

    I already voted Willy G.

I should have voted Eboue. I think he’s playing his best football for Arsenal now.

  330. Love that photo Ole.

All the photos on the site from last night are great. Smiles all round, that feeling of making such a deserved breakthrough late on. Such a mature, patient performance all round. Wonderfully encouraging stuff.

  331. Just voted Manu.

If I win I get to shake his hand.

    Vote Manu!

  332. steve

i have a name and Howard isnt. so i would suggest fuck Howard to. and that goes for you aswel if you want be one of them pricks.

  333. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Haha @ Venables’ beard.

  334. Spotted David Platt in the toilet in West Upper last night, literally.

    What a perfect evening.

    ….Arsenal….

  335. Arsenal the great

At this level, how can the Spanish pretender get into the team?

  336. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Don Quixote?

  337. ole gunner

I dont think i have a problem with you or do I?

    Arsenal the great

i aree with you on your fact about almunia cause once he comes back he will find his ass sitting on the bench.

  338. Yes the Champions League is so easy to win. That’s we have so many European Cups sitting next to our 13 league trophies.

Oh, and I guess Chelsea aren’t really interested in it huh? They probably lose because they are focussing on the league.

By that logic, there is also no chance in hell Liverpool are going to win the league

  339. Some idiot took a bet with me that Eboue would have a bad season on these very ACLF pages.

Where is he? Who is he? Was it James or some other? They all sound the same to me.

I would like my payment please. Or shall we say double or quits for October?

  340. My daughter texted me last night saying, as she got home (from Heathrow after a flight from Zimbabwe) she heard this massive roar (her flat looks across to Emirates, from Holloway Rd). Now that was the second goal! Nice.

Frank, was David Platt taking the piss or shitting himself? Or perhaps being violently sick – ‘barking at the ants’ as we say.

RvP was interviewed after the game on Sky Sports. Such a nice young man and humble. He was full of praise for their keeper.

  341. I am beginning to wonder if your daughter lives in the same block of flats as my dear departed Grandparents lived, ZimPaul. Opposite the Herbert Chapman.

Poor David Platt. Strolls into the Gents, someone shouts ‘There’s David Platt!’…and everyone turns round.

  342. I’m off the Emirates Sunday for my first league game of the season and I can’t wait

Song was immense last night- I remember a number of tackles where he won the ball, left the opposition player on the ground, didn’t concede a foul and had time to drive towards goal.

Both Song and Diaby looked physically imposing in midfield
