Vito’s The Mann – One Nil To The Arsenal Is Enough

Fulham 0 – 1 Arsenal

0 – 1 van Persie (51)

The mark of a title winning team is to play poorly and win. Of course, the judgement of whether a team has played badly is entirely relative, dependent upon the standards that they have set themselves. Yesterday was a halway house, neither outstanding or poor. It was enough. It was a fixture that has tasted defeat in two of the previous three visits. That it did not is in no small amount to Vito Mannone.

Notionally the third choice ‘keeper at the club, Mannone suffered at the hands of his critics believing him to be another Almunia. If the Spaniard plays that well for the rest of the season, Arsenal will walk the league, FA Cup, Champions League and Carling Cup, even if he does not play in some of those tournaments. Mannone in the meantime has questioned the judgement of those who were criticising him.

The match itself was a thoroughly enjoyable affair, not least because the hosts were prepared to try and play football, to attack and to stretch the game in a manner that put many teams above them to shame. The folly in their approach was shown in the result and the fact that Bobby Zamora would have struggled to find the cow, let alone hit its arse with a banjo. Yet hopefully others will take hope from the number of chances Fulham created. Would that every team approached the game with similar intent because quite simply, Arsenal’s ability to win these sorts of games increases.

It was an important win. The surprise defeat of Chelsea created a tightness in the table, marked with the game in hand that Arsenal possess. A win and three points is the gap to the leaders, an inconsequential amount at this stage of the season, especially with two of the teams above us already visited.

Mannone is garnering the praise, quite rightly so. Dempsey, Gera, Zamora, Johnson and everyone else will be wondering how they failed to beat the youngster. He had a helping of luck along the way but as Gary Player observed, “The harder I practice, the luckier I get“. Mannone must have been at London Colney twelve hours a day last week on that basis. He even found time to give William Gallas a wake-up call with his left knee.

Fulham were quicker out of the blocks with Johnson and Dempsey getting an early indication of the form Mannone was in, a double save that he knew little about for the second part. Fabregas had the first Arsenal chance minutes later, scooping his shot over the bar. Arshavin was closer in distance from the goal when he rasped a shot high. It was a signal for Arsenal’s dominance at that point, a precursor to a goal for the visitors, or so it seemed. van Persie blazed a free kick so high that the local aircraft were given a danger warning.

Before the interval, Mannone had one more intervention to make, saving from Gera’s accurate effort. Six minutes into the second half, the deadlock was broken, Fabregas finding van Persie whose first touch controlled the ball, his second sent it into the back of the net. Bendter could have doubled the advantage, drawing a good save from Schwarzer. Fulham recovered and Mannone once more denied Johnson, Zamora and at the end, Zamora once more, stopping a header from almost point blank range.

After the match, Arsene said:

Vito is young with talent and he showed that talent today. You have to give him 10 out of 10 because he did absolutely everything right and that’s all you can ask of a goalkeeper.

The rest of the team were unexceptional in their performance. They were not bad, just did not get going. Criticism of them is missing the point to some extent though. How many times in the past few seasons has a performance such as this resulted in a defeat? The media likes to portray Champions or challengers as those who sweep all away before them yet frequently, the opposite is true. There are probably 5 or 6 wins in every seasons where the performance does not merit that result.

As Wenger observed:

There is an attitude, a spirit and a quality in the side that makes me very positive about this season

I believe it is called resilience. Clichy hinted at that earlier in the week when he observed that the players were more unified, Gallas happier in his relationship with Vermaelen than Toure and Adebayor gone, the disdain of Robin van Persie apparent in his reference to his former team-mate as “Mr Adebayor“. A squad that is willing to fight for each other is one that can challenge for silverware. Whilst yesterday is no guarantee of that, it is a positive indication.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. First and my first post. Nice blog, well thought thru.

  2. I’m glad it wasn’t as bad as the bloggers on here made it seem last night, Yogi!

Couldn’t watch the game. Had a bonfire in the woods with the grandchildren with sausages on sticks. (with the odd sneak back to the house for more wine and a score check). It was obviously a wise choice. Much less stressful that actually watching the game.

  3. Mannone The Match!

  4. To those who think Diaby is crap. I read a couple of Fulham blogs and they were so appreciative of our daddy long legs.

  5. A simply fabulous result.

We really needed 3 points yesterday, it was the sort of game that we stuttered in last year and never got true momentum going game to game. We now have a very presentable run of games, all winnable, whilst teams above us play each-other.

The first touch and finish, on his weaker side, from RVP was reminiscent of henry.

The team really did not play badly, quite well in fact. Fulham are a good side with an excellent home record. The team deserves full praise after getting 3 points. In the end we had the quality to make and take a opening, the opposition didn’t.

Great game for mannone, but he should have made those saves – that is why you play a keeper. First time this season though that our keeper has been called upon regularly and first time he has done his job in response. Looks grim for almunia, surely he cant have a cold for this long?

Top draw result. We win at home on tuesday and the group stage is almost conquered and we can look forward to resting players later on. Two home games to come in the league that could potentially be 4 wins on the spin. Did we do that once last season?

  6. Ole Gunner

    Diaby IS crap.

  7. Well considering how we got arsewhiped at the cottage last season.ok not in scoreline but they outplayed us, this was a gooden. ok they still outplayed us at times in the first but we weathered the storm which was nice to see. good to see us under the cosh and come through it.

  8. No Diaby is crap for 3 games out of 5.

  9. No seriously Diaby does offer us something Sometimes

  10. Fab still has that Henry in his last season look.

  11. Bob,

After the first save from Vito i felt we would not conceed and was not worried, actually that was the first time in a long time i felt like that.

  12. Of course Fulham appreciates Diaby. He liked to give them the ball

  13. Tense Game yesterday. Ta for the write up Yogi

    A different stat for everyone!
Interestingly Arsenal committed 11 fouls to Fulhams 14. Fulham picked up 4 yellows and Arsenal none.
I know it sometimes seems as though we get hard done by the foul/yellows ratio but it depends so much on how the ref sees a foul what side of bed he got out of etc etc!
Did any one see the Clichy interview on the Beeb.
A very impressive man Mr Clichy.
I will try with a link on the next post otherwise go to arsenal on the bbc
    One nil to the Arsenal!

  14. Bragging Rights Ltd

As I said yesterday; Diaby wasn’t at his best, but he won a few important headers at the back. We needed him against a big team like Fulham. Same goes for Bendtner.

  15. Diaminedave,

You’ve got it all wrong. We do get done by the fouls/cards ratio. Sure, we didn’t get any stupid cards (like Sagna getting booked for Bellamy running into him, or Sagna getting booked for complaining about the referee’s decision minutes after Fletcher & Rooney did the same with no penalty).

The point is still completely valid, and has been for a few years.

We are consistently one of the least fouling, one of the most fouled yet one of the most carded. One game doesn’t change the trend.

  16. Bragging Rights Ltd

    …physically big.

  17. I’m still buzzing about Man One’s performance yesterday.

  18. Please left Mannone N1. No Almunia any more. With Mannote we should take some points agains United and City.

  19. Bragging Rights Ltd

Mannone was great, but I have to say we had as many big opportunities up the other end.

Arshavin was so unlucky with that chance in the first half; the ball took a ludicrous bobble just as he was lining up the shot – it was only 7 yards out. We’d have settled much earlier if he’d scored that one.

  20. We were always gonna win yesterday.

Just because we are expected to pulverize weaker teams, if they play half decent, they are considered to be superior.

We were on cruise control throughout the game, and I always felt we would win.

Clichy on the left is not a defender though. And he does not attack down his flank. Dont know what he brings to the side.

Get a better left back and we will see the best of Arshavin!

  21. Why does everyone still say we have a small squad?

We have a lot of players, and I don’t envy Arsene. It will be hard to keep everyone happy.

  22. Apparently, on the back of one game, Mannone is the new Vermaelen who was the new Arshavin.

When are some fans going to realise that players are not robots who perform at the same level all of the time. Mannone, during his career, will have bad days. Doubtless, some fans will then be calling for his replacement with a ‘quality’ keeper.

I wish Vito a long and illustrious career but have no doubt that Almunia will be back between the posts soon.

  23. What a thoroughly enjoyable game. Both sides came to play, the ref was pretty good and punished them when they didn’t, there was drama and tension and a great performance from a young player there only by chance.
AA felt his way back in after injury, TR7 had another sparkling cameo as he slowly gets back into his stride. That was what it’s all about; a win away with one of our rivals slipping up and a good bit of entertainment to boot. Love it.
For fuck’s sake though can we pat the Don on the back but stop making him out to be the new Lev Yashin after one good game.

  24. Is the referee who added 3 mins stoppage time in 1H and 5 mins stoppage time in 2H in our game v Fulham the same referee who refereed the Man Utd v Man City game? Could this referee be trying to act consistently in adding so much stoppage time? I thought it was a bit excessive.

  25. Gunner From Nigeria

Most of the Fulham chances yesterday came through the left by way of crosses into the box meaning that Denilson is seriously needed to help out with that side of defence from the midfield because Arshavin doesn’t help out much with defensive duties. While, we invariably play with Song as the real defensive
player in midfield as Fabregas and Diaby are too soft defensively.
Denilson gives balance to our midfield when he plays.

  26. Vito is Italian and not Spanish. In your second paragraph, you seem to suggest that he is Spanish but equally I am not sure whether you were referring to Almunia or not.

I disagree that Vito was our only outstanding player.

Gallas and Song made some outstanding interventions. Gallas, in particular, had a difficult game against Fulhams attackers.

Fulham put up a great fight and there was a precarious balance that threatened to go either way throughout the match.

We showed great resiliance in the 1st half as Fulham showed power, strength and energy. They were well organised and eager to chase us down, stop our passing game and were always looking to attack us. Were it not for the young Italian, we could have been 2-0 down after 45 minutes.

I am not sure what happened to Fulham during the interval but their energy levels dropped in the second half whereas we kept going and raised our game considerably.

Our goal was not unexpected but our refusal to concede was. I think this is the great positive I can take from this game. Gallas should also be praised for his bravary and strength in keeping Fulham at bay.

It was my first time to Craven Cottage. I really enjoyed it. As the sun set beside the river, the stadium erupted.

Our away fans are amazing. It was like going to battle with such ferocious chanting, feet stamping on the floor. It was electric. Last time I saw that at the Emirates was in the Semi against Villareal. If the Emirates had that level of intensity every saturday, it would seriously frighten most visiting teams into submission!

Credit to our away fans for singing their hearts out.

We are looking good. More please.

  27. I agree Consolsbob @ 11.06 am , just reposting this comment from the end of yesterday’s post

People have very short memories it seems. Fabianski made a few errors of judgement in the FA cup game against Chelsea, but he has also given many solid and a few outstanding performances when called upon. Almunia may not have started the season in the best of form, but he has a good track record and he will be back as soon as he regains his fiitness and form because the same people praising Mannone for a great display today, will be slaughtering him at the first sign of weakness. I’m happy that we have such depth in the GK position so that the deputies can do a job when called upon, but let’s not get carried away here.

Thanks for the link to that interview Diaminedave

Great, balanced post as usual YW

  28. I agree Gunner from Nigeria – we need Denilson back for that balance. I also believe Rosicky can do that when fully fit and Nasri was being groomed for that role too so that we have more depth in that role than people realise.

Diaby is in his first run of games without injury, so he is not as accomplished as he will be in time. But as BRL pointed out, his height yesterday was an important factor defensively.

I’m sick to death of the ‘Cesc is on his way’ comments too. If anyone saw his reaction after the goal, leaping onto the back of RVP and pumping his fist at the away fans, he could not look more committed if he tried. Just let him play his game and stop trying to read his mind.

  29. Merida’s getting stick for going to play in the junior World Cup. It’s surreal.

Some people think it’s more important to play in the Mickey Mouse Cup than it is to go and do well in the tournament that heralded the world class credentials of the likes of Messi, Figo, Fabregas, Maradona, Salenko, Aguero, Adriano, Burdisso, Casillas, Xavi, Mikel, Siasia, Riquelme, Dunga, Mijatovic, Boban, Bebeto….

  30. No Arse Baggins I did not imply Vito was a Spaniard. The point I made was that if The Spaniard (Almunia) plays as well as our third choice keeper (Mannone) for the rest of our season, no-one will score against us.

The only implication was that Almunia will be restored to the starting line-up once he has recovered from his illness.

    HTH

    YW

  31. OG

Criticism of Merida is misplaced. FIFA should be getting the arse-kicking for not having the foresight to schedule an international tournament in the summer. Not entirely unexpected though because for them to do so would be revolutionary, would it not?

    YW

  32. When Almunia is fit, Wenger will have a dilemma should Mannone continues his fine performance. If I were Wenger, I would persist with Mannone for as long as possible provided Mannone continues from last night.

  33. I was harshly critical of RVP’s “exaggeration” comments, Mean Lean but you have to love these comments from him:

“So it is not simply about trophies, it is the whole story of Arsenal giving me lots of positive things,” he said. “Of course the end result is trophies and I want that, but I am not closing my mind to what is happening day in and day out at this club.”

Take a bow Mr. Van Persie.

  34. Hi Ole Gunner
Sorry small person required walking!!! so did not get back to you

I know that you look a lot at the stats (seeing your posts on anything from the Grauniad to here) so I accept that you are correct.
Just think that sometimes we fans play the ‘we are hard done by card to often’ and we have to accept that other people could have a similar interpretation.
Anyway dont want to make a big thing of it.
Personally I thought fulham really played well but in the end we did the better job. That has got to be good for the team. A hard fought triumph and hats off to the performance of the young man Mr Manone
    all the best gunner fans

  35. 4th place is ours City

We had two heroes on the pitch yesterday.Vito of course but also Gallas who threw his body into blocking challenges. His block on Zamora was brilliant
Gallas is having a new least of life since fat arse left

The midfield was poor though. The defence was exposed too often

Wenger should give Vito a run of 10 games now and not bring back Almunia.

  36. Yet again I must say a brilliant hard fought victory.. On a lesser note I’ve seen the Russian Prince that tired before, he was sweating profusely but at least he’s passed the point of turning red like a beet-root (Tuesday he should start)

It looks like many are ready to lynch Diaby (when he one some good contests), during a 1st half when Cesc made countless glory passes in similar fashion to young Aaron Ramsey which were intercepted, at times when support for a simpler was clearly available.

Cesc’s game recovered well in the second half though, but I am of the opinion that we should produce a lot more simpler passes especially in a game like last night since that visionary through ball is not always there, but if we keep making simple passes and maintaining patient possession the magic ball will become visible and easier to make..

Alas our captain is still growing and getting better but a player who shows this very well is Rosicky, its clear why the Boss compares Denilson to him, in this regard..

Good comments Diaminedave I echoed your words yesterday cos I also thought, for a change the ref had a good game.. also thanks for the clichy link

  37. Diaby is getting a lot of stick, but let me put in some evidence for the defence. Stats of course:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/1EyDz4bms9ATt79g4gK1

  38. Thankyou for a reasoned response to yesterday’s game. It seems some bloggers prepare their post game analysis TOO SOON after the final whistle when their emotions are still running high. As a result you get a mixture of terrace emotion intertwined amongst some bar room discussion.

I always find that second tme around, invariably, we never played as badly as it first seemed or maybe as well as it first appeared.

You need “good” luck in life and football but you have to use that luck to your best interests….we did just that yesterday.

Well done lads! We could easily have lost that game-that we didn’t, is deserving of praise and will hopefully be a foundation for us to push on and climb the table.

  39. Good morning/afternoon Arsenal Family!

Great Stats Ole, all he needs to do is settle when he has the ball and dont hold onto so long. Anyone who knows football knows that he has the ability to be a great player.

Great win, remember last year a team would have one or two shots on goal score and we would struggle to unlock the defence.

Also AA is obviously not match fit but had some good play.

We are on our way to the PL title!!!

  40. “Clichy on the left is not a defender though. And he does not attack down his flank. Dont know what he brings to the side.”

Odds on favourite for most ridiculous comment of the day.

My fave moment was Rvp immediately turning to point at Cesc, acknowledging the world class service and underplaying how freakishly good his own first touch was. As spectacular as Cesc’s pass was, RvP’s first touch was even better.

  41. nolaboyd, the end of the match was great when the players congratulated Vito, its like they were saying you saved butts today.

  42. our butts

  43. As usual some ridiculous criticisms of players many of which played very well.
    OG thanks for the chalkboard.
I looked at the following last night:

Team tackling and passing Fulham and Arsenal both very similar numbers. Arsenal 30% stronger in interceptions. So it was a very “committed” display from both teams.
Arsenal midfield did very well, in particular limiting most Fulham chances to set pieces, from which Mannone did well.

    Individually the usual suspects:
    Diaby
    Tackles 8 won, 6 lost
    Interceptions 5
    Passing 27 good, 1 bad
    Clearances 3
(but he did lose possession occasionally including once late in the game in the wrong third of the pitch)

    Song
    Tackles 8/0
    Interceptions 7
    Passing 37/2
    Clearances 2

    Cesc
    Tackles 4/3
    Interceptions 7
    Passing 45/17
    Assist 1
(down a little on passing accuracy – but he is the main creative element and its not unusual)

All the hard core tackling/interception numbers are very impressive (compared to other top midfields).
Diaby attempted 14 tackles (winning a game high8)! Yet he’s still criticised.

  44. Bradys right foot

Didn’t play well but got the win delighted, cue another round of frenzied Song bashing over at the dark side lol.

  45. Pantsil is a dirty player. Just ask Bendtner.

  46. rvp’s goal was similar to the goal he scored against the pool from nasri’s pass .

i think edurado and vela going to start against olympiacos on tuesday .

diaby should hit the gym .

clichys perfomance is dropping since nasris absence . may be he is still learning the 4 3 3 .

  47. Mean Lean,

“FFS! Perhaps Fulham are a better side than Stoke!

Anyone that is watching MOTD will know what I am ranting about”

I know just what you’re talking about. That manU fancying miserablist had me cursing loudly at the tele, much to the disappointment of everybody else in the room.

Well done Don Vito – stepped up to the plate in style. Almunia will come straight back in when fit though, and rightly so. Manuel is Arsenal’s number one. He’s one of the many leaders we have, the ones Mark Lawrenson can’t seem to appreciate’ along with Cesc, RVP, willyG10, Rosicky, Clichy and pretty soon Vermaelen and Arsh too. And importantly, he is our best goalkeeper.

  48. Diaby has the tools to become top class but needs to add more consistency.

Concentration seems to be a major problem for him (he completely lost Zamora from the late free kick & almost cost us the match) & until he eradicates simple errors he`ll be under the microscope.

Mannone was excellent but Almunia will rightly step straight back in once fit again.

  49. HHmmm….Diaby one bad tackle! yeah right, and im off for a meal with Wenger tonight to discuss Tuesdays tactics.

  50. Sorry thats one bad pass.

  51. If Almunia’s chest infection keeps him out for another couple of games, and if Mannone continues the form of yesterday, I think it would be unjust to dump him out of the team as soon as Almunia returns to fitness.

  52. i am impressed with fulhams fitness coach . here a few word about him. we could do with a guy like this.

Mark Taylor joined Roy Hodgson’s team in the spring of 2008 as Head of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science following spells with Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers. Mark is the most qualified ex-professional football-playing physiotherapist in the Premier League.

Prior to seven highly successful years at the Reebok Stadium, Mark spent four seasons at Blackburn Rovers and worked under Roy Hodgson during the 1997/98 season. Mark’s Sports Medicine and Science department has achieved unrivalled results in injury prevention in recent years.

Aimed at maximising the playing potential of each individual player, Mark’s scientific and proven approach to fitness and injury will stand Roy Hodgson’s squad in good stead this season. Prior to his work in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science, Mark enjoyed a 12-year career in the professional game, amassing 325 appearances for Hartlepool, Crewe, Blackpool, Cardiff City and Wrexham.

  53. Agree with Passenal and Consolsbob’s comments about Mannone. He was superb yesterday but he is young, playing in a position where players often don’t mature until their mid to late 20′s. I really hope that he can continue with yesterdays form but we need to be careful in building him up to be the saviour of Arsenal after all there are plenty of people who will be waiting to knock him down after one so so performance. What saddens me the most is many of them will be Arsenal supporters.

  54. How people can criticise the size of our squad and in the same breath talk about Liverpool being title contenders shows the staggering lack of intelligence exhibited by both supporters and the football press.

  55. Bradys right foot

Anybody been following this guy McCourt at Celtic, I remember he left six or seven spuds in his wake before missing the target at the Wembly pre season tournament. Read a report of his two wonder goals and youtubed him some of this stuff is outrageous.

  56. Bradys right foot – Performing in a mickey mouse league and pre season tournaments is a world away from doing in an average PL team, let alone for Arsenal.

  57. Bradys right foot

True Marc but i can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a guy at any level beating players and dribbling like this kid. He’s like a real throw back, the modern game doesn’t really produce this type of player mickey mouse or not the guys talented.

  58. Talk about the age when players mature is so much bollocks, I’m afraid. In any case, the only question that matters is whether a player is mature enough.

  59. OG or jbh, do you have any stats on Clichy’s performances as I’m sick of seeing people slating him and suggesting he should be dropped without any concrete evidence to justify it?

  60. Poliziano – I was only warning against the inevitable crap that Mannone will get the first time he makes a mistake. I wasn’t criticising him and I would love for him to be superb all season and go to the World Cup as Italy’s number 1. All I was suggesting is that we keep yesterdays performance in some kind of perspective.

  61. Quite agree Marc,

So much of the art of goalkeeping is down to temperament and experience. Almunia has proved himself at the highest level time and time again. A couple of errors at the start of a season does not condemn a GK. This is part of living your life on the goal line. Mistakes mean goals. Cesc has had an indifferent start to the season at best. He can make 5 – 6 mistakes in a game, giving the ball away each time and we may not be punished with conceding.

Shot-stopping is the first prerequisite for a fine goalkeeper, a box Mannone has firmly ticked. But the more obscure boxes 2-100 don’t get ticked over 2-3 games. It’s about winning tests against inifite variations of goalscoring threats. It’s about experiencing as many new situations as are thrown at you, always learning, always adding to the repetoire – so that when the tests come at you again, you have the full arsenal of goalkeeping solutions at your disposal.

So experience means mental, environmental, situational as well as scenarios on the field and training field. Almunia’s goalkeeping credentials are years ahead in this respect.

  62. Sorry, Marc. I was just making a general observation. Analysis of football seems to be full of false rules.

  63. Poliziano – Agree. I’m probably a little paranoid about certain topics but when everyone’s after you your bound to get paranoid.

  64. In the absence of any Arsenal related controversy emerging from yesterday’s game, I see the media have started on the ‘Vela to Xerez’ BS. Aren’t they embarrassed to call themselves journalists without doing even the most perfunctory research? According to Sky, Vela wants to go on loan for first team experience because he has failed to nailed down a first team place with Arsenal since joining the club in 2005! Apart from the fact that he was on loan until last season because of work permit issues and has been injured since the beginning of this season, their story is completely accurate…not!

  65. Arsenal the great

Consolsbob and the rest of Almunia advocates

Almunia will always save the shots all average GKs are supposed to save but he rarely earns a vital 3 points. In fact, he takes away about 10 points a season.

Almunia in goal means Arsenal can concede anytime after we’ve led a game. It has been so since Jens Lehmann left. Spurs, Chelsea, Manu, Fulham last season, his faulty deeds are many.

Arsene should now fully fill up the remaining hole in the defence by dropping Almunia. He has partially done that by selling off Kolo but now is the time to shut it down by dropping Almunia to the bench.

Almunia is the elephant in the defence.

  66. Passenal – It’s much the same with Cesc when asking him whether he feels he missed the opportunity to join Barca in the Summer. The fact that Barca never even made a bid and most of the talk was to deflect talk of Madrid’s spending seems to have escaped all notice.

  67. Vela to Xerez ? You couldn`t make it up.

Well actually you could – & somebody has.

    Poliziano,

Yes, they are so many false rules in football. One of my favourites is when young players are criticised (for being young) yet when they play well it`s because they `have no fear`.

  68. BRF

The modern game is producing players like that all the time.. what maybe true is Britain aren’t producing this type of quality very often but there are countless players who in their respective leagues beat players like its out of fashion..

  69. I now see whre I was wrong, Howard the Duck.

Thank you for putting me right.

  70. Bragging Rights Ltd

I’m more convinced with each repetition.

  71. Arsenal the great

If Almunia is great, can anyone give me the name of the club that wants him? Has Spain ever called him into the national side?

He has never won us a game that I know of.

To finish a game as a GK and be surrounded and praised by your own colleagues is the highest honour. Mannone had that experience yesterday, symbolising the new confidence they have in him.

As Arsene said, Mannone is the new No.1 for now. Mannone will pull the same trick Almunia pulled on Jens Lewhmann.

We had Jens wrist injury then, now we have chest infection for Almunia.

  72. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Perfect timing.

It’s the blog version of I am Sitting in a Room.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Sitting_in_a_Room

  73. Thanks for clarifying YW. I had assumed that you were referring to Almunia but it wasn’t immediately obvious to me.

Perhaps it was the lack of coffee in the morning. :)

Good article btw. I agree with every one else regarding your blog on Arsenal. Easily the best on the net.

  74. “If Almunia is great, can anyone give me the name of the club that wants him?

This is the kind of logic that only children can use when arguing in the playground.

“Has Spain ever called him into the national side?”

    Have you seen the competition?

By that logic, Clichy, Sagna and even Fabregas to a certain extent are no good either.

Perhaps you should just concentrate on your homework and puberty?

  75. Fabregas is 22 and has 44 caps.

  76. Poliziano, I think the point he is making is that Cesc is not first choice yet.

  77. Passenal is right Poliziano. I know that Fabregas has played for his national team but he is not first choice given the array of talent they can call upon. Arguably, Spain have 3 of the best midfieldiers in the world in Iniesta, Xavi and Fabregas.

My point is really a defence of Almunia. His lack of international callups is really a reflection of the talent he has ahead of him.

I have no doubt that Fabregas will be choice in time but Xavi and Iniesta are slightly older and more experienced than he is.

  78. why didnt eduardo feature in line up or bench vs fulham..is he injured..??????

i wud love to see this line up..

    eduardo..rvp..arshavin

    rosicky..song..fabragas

but i feel wenger likes a more defensive midfileder to two attacking ones and bendtner upfront than eduardo

  79. Bragging Rights Ltd

Competition for the Spain GK spot is incredibly strong. Casillas is the best in the world (or near enough) and could be first choice for another ten years.

And the squad’s not easy to break either. You’ve got Asenjo, Diego Lopez, Palop, Victor Valdez and Reina – off the top of my head – who are among the best in Europe. Almunia is on the same level as those guys, but the problem for him is that he left Spain with a poor reputation, as kind of a journeyman, which is a tag that’s tough to shake.

  80. “Arsenal brought something to the game too, of course, with the wonderful loping runs of Abou Diaby, slicing through gaps with awesome power and speed, the compact sensibilities of Alexander Song, who looks to have it all, and that menacing Robin van Persie, around whom you can never relax.”

    http://followingthefulham.blogspot.com/2007/11/new-fulham-blog.html

Its not just real Arsenal fans that appreciate Diaby and Song.

  81. adc, you have to pick the team for the occasion – Fulham have some giants in their team who are good in the air, so I can see why Diaby and Bendtner were selected. It doesn’t mean we’ll never see your suggested line up, but it would have to be the right match because we have to have balance and not put ourselves at a disadvantage from kick off.

  82. I would like to see Rossicky cover for Fabregas at times so that Cesc can get the rest he needs / when needs so that there is less pressure on him.

It really is great to have Rossicky back from injury. For me, this possibly the best piece of news of the summer -alongisde the realisation that Eduardo is back again.

I just hope that fortune favours us in this coming season as incessant injuries have really disrupted our season in the past. However, looking at it in a different light -the players that have had to come into cover for injuries have also flourished.

Look at Song and Denilson! Prior to last season, they were really just squad players but during the course of last season they have seriously raised their game and now can feel that they should be first choice.

  83. Well, it’s true that Iniesta has made 18 more senior appearances than Fabregas. That’s a lot of extra experience. On the other hand, Fabregas partially makes up for his lack of experience at club level with 9 extra international appearances.

  84. Arsenal the great

    Arse Baggins

Your point just reinforces my statement that Almunia is no quality for us. If he can’t do better than Reina then he’s not good enough to play for a team that once had Jennings, Seaman and Lehmann, who were all international keepers and trophy winners.

He has never won us anything and will never because he’s just not good enough.

He’s a basket case, conceding goals match after match since becoming the No.1

When he’s in the sticks, you’re certain we’ll concede cheap goal.

  85. Great photograph in the Sunday Times today, Cesc leaping into a celebration with Robin and Nik B. Stunning image and the huge grin on Cesc’s face is a resounding f*ck you to anyone that says he looks disinterested. As were the hearty congratulations he gave young Corleone at the final whistle. This is a man very much interested in Arsenal FC.

He’s improving game by game. Hopefully we’ll see that again on Tuesday. The assist was a beaut and the 1-2 to put Eboue in around 80 minutes was vintage Fab. Slide-rule perfection.

  86. That ‘I am Sitting in a Room’ is brilliant Big Al. Howard and a lot of other numpties defined to a tee. Fantastic.

  87. Arsenal the great,

You are talking out your arse.

Almunia has kept us in countless games.

Big, big saves last year against Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Roma. And those are just stand out high profile games. He is quick off his line, he’s a quality shot stopper, he’s intelligent, organised, calm, has good distribution. On form he’s a worldwide top 10 goalkeeper. I’m backing him to find that form again and I think Arsene will too.

How about penalty saves from Keane, Young, Martins?

I think if you asked Mannone how he rates Almunia the answer would be, very highly indeed.

Mannone is chock full of promise. So is Wowzer. This is great news. Almunia though, is different gravy and any argument to the contrary is just pissing in the wind.

Pissing in the winds of short term memory loss.

  88. Arsenal the great

    LimparAssist

Spurs 4 Arsenal 4, anyone? Whatabout Ronaldo’s 41 yards near post free kick? You claim somewhere that he saved us many goals in the semi at Old Trafford in the CL games. I mean did he win the game for us? Do you recall Torres second goal at Anfield in the CL semis?

Can you give a list of number of times he’s won 3 points for us in crucial games? I can give you what Lehmann did. Can you?

Almunia and Toure were the elephants in the defence. Now that Arsene has sorted out Toure, its time he finish off Almunia and save the leakages in the defence once and for all.

  89. Arsenal the great

    LimparAssist

Penalty save against Spurs and in the same game got beat by Berbatov at his near post?

  90. And you are the elephant in the room you tit. Why don’t you stick your tusk up your arse.

  91. Is jimjim back?

  92. Arsen Baggins @ 6:03 PM

Exactly right. I saw a couple of Fulham blogs and they were raving about Diaby.

It’s the same way Man Shitty blogs were absolutely buzzing when they bagged Adebyewhore while Arsenal blogs were saying he was the worst striker ever.

Some Arsenal fans start believing their own crap.

  93. Vito had a couple of good games and all credit to him but you can’t judge a 20 year old keeper based on 2 games. He obviously has the ingredients but not the experience …especially in the big games where his nerves will be fried and put to the test.

Almunia is a number 1 who had a dip in form, he is not a bad keeper and you can’t ask for every player who had 2 bad games to leave the club. That is ridiculous.

    BTW….F*ck off Howard
(Whichever way and for whatever you say)

  94. 100th woooooooooohooooooooooooooooo

  95. Arsenal the great

    Gunner4ver

Almunia is not a good GK. He’s an average GK. He rarely plays without conceding. He’s always picking balls from his goal post.

From day one, I said Almunia couldn’t win us anything and since then I’ve been proved right.

For a 21 year old youngman to do so well to be congratulated in turns by his colleagues indicated how long they suffered under Almunia in post.

Next stop, Arsenal v Olympiacos featuring Vito Corleone in goal and the next and the next till he’s off to Spain second divison, where he came from, Celta Vigo.

  96. Why are we wasting time debating whether Almunia will be back? Of course he will.

Still a much better keeper than Vito.

it’s not like we’ll expect Howard to grasp that concept. Why are we arguing it with him?

  97. Agreed Ole G….

A simple F*ck Off should do just fine.

  98. That was an interesting link Arse Baggins, polluted only by the usual alleged Arsenal supporters slagging off one of our players. Have they learned nothing from the departure of the greedy one? They may not have liked him, but he is a good player when he wants to be. Diaby lacks match experience because of his injury record, but anyone with an ounce of football knowledge can see that he has a lot to offer once he gets a run in the team and some more confidence to try some of the things he does in training.

  99. Apologies for messing up with the above, YW.

  100. Very quiet today.

  101. Vito has done really well against Fulham the only way to know wether a player has what it takes is consistency and that comes with experience, Almunia will take back his place but its good to have an emerging keeper who is going to compete for the 1st spot and push Almunia. I also rate Chesney very highly.
Diaby is a great player with great skills he can go past people with ease but he seems a play who thrives on confidence. He does not get a continues run in the team due to injuries and that can be really furstrating.Because of his ability, he can play almost anywhere on the pitch and that can have its positives and negatives.

  102. Poor Benny hope he gets well soon.
