Arsenal Youth Progress In Carling Cup

Carling Cup 3rd Round
Arsenal 2 – 0 West Bromwich Albion

1 – 0 Watt (68)
2 – 0 Vela (76)

The youngsters progressed through to Saturday’s draw, gaining more useful experience than was perhaps garnered from last season’s 6 – 0 drubbing of Sheffield United. Until the point of Jerome Thomas’ deserved dismissal, it was an even contest, Arsenal the better team in the opening phase, Albion coming to the fore towards the end of the first half.

In the end, Arsenal’s superior numbers proved too much for Albion although the visitors contributed massively to the second goal with a moment that will no doubt turn up on a Danny Baker DVD of comedy defending. Wenger will be pleased with the efforts of the squad, no-one appearing totally overawed by the occasion, particularly those debutants in the first team.

Senderos had the opportunity to prove himself as a contender for a first team spot and did little wrong last night. Equally, he did little prove his doubters wrong either. He will, I suspect, prove to be a useful squad member before moving on in the summer on a free transfer. He had a couple chances to head himself onto the scoresheet but was unable to convert either opportunity early on. The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was Sanchez Watt’s effort that dribbled against the post.

Albion gradually got involved more and forced two good saves from Szczesny and, I think, it was Gilbert who made an important clearance. The turning point of the match was Thomas’ dismissal. He can have little argument about the decision of the referee, raising your hand to an opponent almost always brings about a red card. Wilshere is being criticised for his reaction to the initial contretemps but there is nothing written in the Laws of the Game that says the victim of foul play has to accept an apology nor an outstretched hand.

Wenger hinted that Thomas’ temprament was one of the reasons for his lack of progress at Arsenal and his judgement may not have been amiss in that respect. Whatever was said and I suspect it was a minor infraction, Thomas’ reaction was over the top. Di Matteo’s disappointment in the dismissal is no doubt compounded by the fact that his charges were giving a good account of themselves.

In the end, it was the introduction of Carlos Vela which proved inspirational for an attack that had at times lacked focus. The Mexican is apparently in contention for a place on the bench at Fulham this weekend and his telling cameo last night will have done his case no harm whatsoever. His shot was parried into the path of Watt for the deadlock to be broken and he took advantage of indecisive defending to round Kiely and walk the ball over the line following Randall’s exquisite chip to seal the win.

Of the youngsters, Ramsey set the bar highest to show his colleagues the standard expected to reach the first team for Premier and Champions League fixtures. Szczesny had a good game, providing some good saves and his pleasure enhanced by the clean sheet. Before the match, Wenger observed that he had perhaps overplayed Wilshere last season, raising expectations. Wilshere was industrious last night but on occasion ran into cul-de-sacs. Experience will perhaps cause some more patience in the desire to make things happen, Theo Walcott a template to follow.

Matches like this will go a long way to helping decide those who will and will not make it. None of the youngsters on show will have done themselves any harm last night. A good win, a useful experience gaining exercise even if had been a defeat. Whether such a youthful team would be able to progress against stronger opposition is open to conjecture. Saturday’s draw may well provide an opportunity to find that answer.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Didn’t see the game but reading around the blogs, Ramsey was outstanding and fully deserving his 1st team outings.

  2. Ramsey is knocking so hard on the first team door, it is even like playing a man against boys to have him in the League Cup.

i loved the phrase on arsenal.com

The introduction of vela was like introducing a fox among chicken..

    el classico

  3. arsenalkabisa

You get to see the full game yet?

  4. Personally i thought ramsey was poor. We all know he has creative talent but he is still tryin the spectacular far too often and giving the ball away needlessly. He only shone in the final thirty mins when they tired.

  5. didnt see the game but happy to know the boys played well n won… hope they win it this yr…

  6. @CG.

Nah. just the clips and some reading.

  7. I was at the game, to be honest I really didn’t notice Ramsey much until the second half where he got involved a lot more. Wilshere constantly comes up with inspired moves out of the blue which no one else on the pitch would think of. Gibbs was brilliant as usual, linking up really well with everyone else and always looking to provide momentum going forward. Chesney looks like a dominant keeper who can instill confidence in his defense.

The crowd in my end was good. Lots of chanting throughout, some people pretty much standing up for the whole game and no hassle from the stewards at all. Good stuff.

  8. @Blackstock

    cool.

In your opinion, who will make it and who wont? Based on yesterdays play?

  9. topgunpires

He seems to have had a good start to the season from what I’ve seen. And yes I must agree about him trying too much to do something special. Maybe its the age, but in the 1st team we cannot afford that. Wenger will know when he can trust him and stick him in. Its no wonder Rosicky has been put in CM, Wenger aint willing to start Ramsey just yet.

He will be a class player soon I reckon. The more minutes he gets the better, play him when need be. Hes a good substitute also, we know he can have an influence on games. Im more assured when Denilson is on the pitch right now, and also Rosicky.

What a class act Rosicky is, Touch wood he stays in good health this season! He deserves it

  10. i loved the phrase on arsenal.com

The introduction of vela was like introducing a fox among chicken..

    el classico

    haha, that is perfect

It really was amazing how quickly he influenced the game. West Brom weren’t ready for him at all.

  11. Blackstock

How did Traore do at LW or LM…??

Give us some player ratings!! :)

  12. Anyone know of where I can download the whole match? Ive tried searching through many torrent sites and no luck

  13. Bentner was right when he said being bought by the club often gets you higher in the 1st squad pecking order, than going through from the youth/reserve league.. It looks like this is part of the reason Ramsey is ahead of the crafty Merida, but I’m confident on his return Merida will show his true qualities in the coming CC games.

For Walcott he brings the kind of pace the team needs but can the flamboyant and greater goal threat of Carlos Vela usurp his position.. I think its good that Wenger still considers Walcott as part of the mid-fielders, nice problems to have for the manager soon..

The team retained possession well but lacked that spark of quality and vision synonymous with Arsenal sides, especially in the first half when Wilshere was the main threat but his better experienced partner Ramsey, over complicated his game by trying too hard to make an impression, when the simple pass would suffice (one can’t blame him though as competition for places looks to be much tighter than last year) lets just hope he’s not too preoccupied with proving he is not the kid in the dressing room anymore.

  14. Traore and Gibbs were a very exciting combination. Coquelin did a Denilson; quiet and mostly effective. JW was irrepressible but Vela is a fucking star. 1st team player all the way for me.

  15. traore was poor but it might just be lack of match practice.
Agree ramsey will be a top player but he’s not there yet.

  16. Congratulations to the lads, didnt catch the game but seen the clips, good opportunistic goals and hmmm… little jack does seem to have a little bit of nastiness about him eh?

Arsene needs to talk to him but its NOT necessarily bad at all! We have to be ready to kick and bite to win and Jack seems practicing that early, carry on, son. :)

Disappointed to hear bartley didnt play, but then the result speaks for itself, couldnt ask for more considering it was our youngsters and they deserve great credit.

    To fulham then…

    Cheers all!!!

  17. Ramsey had an excellent game. I have no idea which game topgunpires was watching!

It was clear that Ramsey felt himself to be one of the senior players in this company and was comfortable in taking control of the game from midfield. I get the feeling that, when he plays for the first team, he feels a bit more the junior and is slightly reticent in taking the leadership role.

  18. In your opinion, who will make it and who wont? Based on yesterdays play?

Well it’s hard to see Gilbert breaking into the first team, but stranger things have happened. Barazite always looks impressive to me, but somehow I don’t get the feeling Wenger is confident enough in him yet. I just would’ve thought he’d be given more chances by now. Hopefully he will get his chance because I really like him.

Aside from all the obvious choices like Gibbs, Ramsey, Vela and Wilshere, the one I would put my money on breaking into the first team has to be Coquelin. He could work on his passing a little bit, but aside from that he is an absolute monster in the middle of the park. Yesterday wasn’t even his best game, but he still looked like everything you could wish for in a young defensive midfielder. I like the way that if he loses the ball, he goes and gets it back as if his life depends on it, and he does get it back.

  19. aj

Every review i’ve read has been very good regarding Ramsey.

topgunpires seems to be the only one on his case

  20. Ramsey is a future captain.

I also didn’t see the game, would love a good breakdown by someone who was there.

  21. How did sunu look Blackstock?

  22. Future Welsh captain..

  23. Blackstock

Come on, give us some player ratings with a brief perfomance anaylsis!

  24. I thought Ramsey had a solid game, not spectacular.

Coquelin looked very good, and composed for someone so young.

    Wilshere looked a threat.

I thought Traore and Sunu were a tad disapointing, neither offered much, and it wasnt until the introduction of Vela that we looked that dangerous.

Watt looked sharp, and is clearly a goal poacher – he got into some good positions.

And Szeceny had a fine game.

  25. Ramsey future President? :)

  26. Bragging Rights Ltd

    They all looked good.

However, it was clear that last night’s XI had never played a competitive game together before. And there was also the feeling I get from reserves games sometimes: We could have done with an old-hand in midfield or attack, just to put his foot on the ball and give a bit of direction to the other players. Vela could probably do that job in the coming rounds.

I feel Coquelin, Sunu and Watt were a bit surprised by the CC level of intensity, but they all improved as the game went on.

I think everyone did well, especially considering that none of our starting front six was older than 19.

Oh, and the whole “will he make it?” grates a little, not least because there are so many twists and turns in the career of a young player.

    Just give them time!

  27. Glad to hear good reviews on Szeceny

We have some promising keepers coming through it seems. After he broke both his arms in the gym there must have been alot of doubt around him

  28. Bragging Rights Ltd

Don’t do player ratings! Football’s a team game.

  29. Analysis blackstock. or we will let YW know…

  30. lol Bragging Rights Ltd

the 11 or so individual perfomances compile the overall ‘team’ performance! We need to look into it ;)

  31. Bragging Rights Ltd

Nah, player ratings are invariably subjective, facile and give no insight into team dynamics.

  32. @BRL

He can rate the team then???

  33. @BRL

bah! big words for a small argument.

  34. The team did what they needed to do – win! :-)

  35. Maybe when I get home, Chris. I’m on my lunchbreak at the moment.

One final word: I love Wilshere’s nasty streak. As long as he doesn’t turn into a festering ball of evil like Rooney, then i’m fine with it. It says to me that he is 100% Arsenal and ready to show some passion. He is one of us. A bit of a Charlie George character, if you will.

  36. Well if player ratings don’t work then why do the Sun AND The Mirror do it eh Mr Bragging Rights. :)

  37. Bragging Rights Ltd

I think I’ve posted about this before, Kabisa. It’s given me a chance to perfect my jargon.

  38. Read my earlier comment Chris…

  39. Keeper looked good,i know its only the CC.But i have more confidence in him than Flapianski.

Out of all the players playing last night the one player who will make it as a first team regular is Jack.Ramsey looked good but is still a long way from the finished article
    Good to see Vela back

  40. Yes i see it Matt, thanks for that. After missing a game, i want to know more!!!

Still cannot believe that it wasn’t broadcasted anywhere.

Apart from ATVO guys, anyone know where i can download the whole game, ive tried looking for a torrent and no luck

  41. top 5 players of last nights game for me in no particuler order were:

Coquelin – ran hard , made effective tackles and interceptions and controlled the mid-field.

Wilshere – skipped over countless challenges penetrated and drew defenders but lacked support.

Szczesny – Made a couple of very good saves looked sturdy and reliable..

Vela – can’t say much more than what has been said already except that he looked from the set off, a class above..

Gibbs – effectively prevented attacks from the left side

I was also pleasantly surprised by the solid performances of Randell and Gilbert..

  42. Jack is going to be some player, i think Wenger is struggling to hold him down! He cannot keep hiding his qualities from us and the world. You can sense Jack is itching to get on the field and be a regular. So too with Ramsey, and i get that with Gibbs too.

Its all very promising.. you can almost feel their hunger to play footy!

  43. Thanks Kitchen Sink

  44. No mention for Senderos and Sylvestre?

i don’t think this is a game for Sylvestre. It is a game for people who want to prove their mettle…

  45. I thought Randall looked OK too when he came on, although i am not sure he has the work rate or physique just yet for the first team.

It will be interesting to see how he develops though, as he has a lot of competition around his age in Midfield, with Ramsey, Merida, Lansbury and then Emmanuel Thomas and Coquelin.

  46. i thought Senderos played well, and showed some leadership skills with the youngr players, which was good to see.

To be fair – him am Sylvestre were not stretched that much.

  47. Sol Campbell has left Notts County by mutual consent after playing only one game, the club has announced.

  48. ArsenalKabisa

The defence aloud the team the stablity they needed, to retain possession and tire the opposition.

Senderos played very well but his display was marred by a rash tackle in the 1st half which got him a yellow card..

Silvestre’s positional play was also very good but I can clearly recall him being nutmegged 3 times with out recovery and two of those times were shots on goal, which if deflected from the inner of his legs would have made things considerably more difficult.

  49. There is a lot of competition amongst the young players for places and that can only bode well for the future of Arsenal.

Unfortunately that means a lot will fall by the wayside especially among the midfield, on the flip-side those that come through won’t just be making up the numbers they will be genuinely talent players and that we must be grateful to Arsene and his team at the Arsenal.

Personal feelings can always cloud one’s judgement and I must say that for some irrational reason I really don’t like Randall.

However his thirty minutes last night was impressive, none his usual laziness, and lack of application. I may yet be turned around.

  50. I have always thought that Randall clearly has ability, but appears a touch lazy.

He looks like he needs a good shake, and to be told that he only has one chance here at Arsenal, and needs to work his socks off to get it.

    But what do i know!

  51. I was at the game, I was the guy with long hair and a black hat, the atmosphere was great, the lads did what the seniors do, wear the other team out then bang in some goals. the performance was not great but its good experience and you could tell who was ready for the first team and who was not.

  52. Bragging Rights Ltd

“However his thirty minutes last night was impressive, none his usual laziness, and lack of application. I may yet be turned around.”

Maybe that’s the way we see him play in the reserves. I really think he’s frustrated there; he never really looks focused and he loses his rag quite often.

I mean, he has definitely never disgraced himself on the bigger stage; he was great in the Carling Cup last year. Perhaps he needs to be playing at this level every week.

It’s just a shame that Derby wouldn’t take him on in preseason. A loan could really get the best out of him.

    -

Sorry I was spiky earlier. Don’t worry, I’ve already sought help about my hatred for individual player ratings.

  53. BRL,

It was the Carling Cup last year that put his first team credentials under scrutiny.

He had a nightmare against Burnley and was culpable in a couple of the goals.

  54. “Walcott a template to follow” – ???
I hope wilshere progresses far quicker than theo has. He’s been a disaster really at arsenal. The only positive thing is that when he does well it really lifts the fans, because everyone wants him to succeed so badly. But being fair, he has taken ages to get anywhere near a decent level, and he still isnt good enough for a top club. Atm, vela dwarfs him in ability, and wilshere would probably be more effective if he played the same number of games.
With walcott, u get 3 or 4 great games in a row, then absolutely nothing for 2 or 3 months. He really is an awful model for the other youngsters. Cesc leads the way, and song and denilson are other good examples of how to improve.

  55. With walcott, u get 3 or 4 great games in a row, then absolutely nothing for 2 or 3 months.
    —————-

Maybe it’s because he is injured for 2 or 3 months.

  56. This is totally Long, and i have plagiarized it some where.

Wojciech Szczesny – Solid performance tonight from the young stopper, I’m starting to think that he should be third choice rather than Vito Mannone. Although he did look a bit wobbly when dealing with crosses, he filled me with confidence throughout, making two fantastic saves. 7

Kerrea Gilbert – Failed to push on up the flanks throughout the match and seemed afraid to risk getting caught out. Tackled well but rarely pushed forward, and did not combine well at all with Gilles Sunu on the right flank. 5.5

Philippe Senderos – Outdone all too often in the air for a man his size, although he did make up for it with an otherwise uncompromising performance. Senderos, playing his first Arsenal game in over a year, was confident and assured in every move he made, winning almost every tackle he contested. 7.5

Mikael Silvestre – His experience shone through this evening as he guided Arsenal’s young guns to victory. He was always on hand to help out the midfield if they got in to trouble, and was assured in defence. Never really tested, but did everything asked of him. 7

Kieran Gibbs – Combined well with Traore on the left and looked menacing when he bombed up the touchline with obvious intent. WBA didn’t offer much on their right flank so there was little for Gibbs to do defensively, but much like Silvestre he dealt with everything that was asked. 7

Aaron Ramsey – Man of the match in my opinion. He started a bit quiet but emerged as a force to be reckoned with as the game grew on, but showed vision and composure well beyond his years to marshall the midfield for most of the match. He was the metronome for Arsenal today, orchestrating his team’s confident performance. 8.5

Francis Coquelin – Think Flamini, but very, very raw. Coquelin wasn’t afraid to get stuck in and was flying into challenges left, right and centre. He could polish his technique and first touch a bit, but he has the desire and temperament to complement the likes of Wilshere and Ramsey in years to come. Ran out of steam in the latter stages, but still put in a solid shift. 7

Jack Wilshere – He’s so good it’s unbelievable. So good, in fact, that the opposition must hack him down at the first available opportunity. Once young Jack develops he will learn to avoid these situations and we’ll see his full potential, but until then we’ll have to live with displays like last night’s. His quality was evident, and he was a constant threat, but there was no end product as he was being hauled to the turf repeatedly. On the odd occasion he managed to beat his man all ends up, and then he’d be so far ahead of everyone he’d have nobody to give the ball off to. 8

Gilles Sunu – Awkward was the best word to describe Sunu’s performance last night. He was isolated on the flank, and did very little to get himself into a suitable position. He was completely ineffective, and on the odd occasion even nullified the rare attacking advances of Kerrea Gilbert. 5

Sanchez Watt – Despite his goal, Watt’s performance was nothing special. The goal was taken well, but that was about the only positive that can come out of an otherwise mediocre performance. He was pushed off the ball very easily, and mis-controlled a number of relatively simple passes. 5.5

Armand Traore – Played in an advanced wide role just as I’d anticipated, and was pretty quiet on the left flank. His crossing was good and his pace is scintillating, but I felt he could have got involved a bit more. 7

    SUBSTITUTES
    Randall – 7.5
    Vela – 8
    Barazite – 7

  57. No – when hes fit u get that. As in he plays badly for months on end.

  58. Bragging Rights Ltd

He wasn’t great, OG, but he certainly wasn’t the only culprit that night.

Randall was among our best performers in the earlier rounds. With last night’s performance thrown in, I’d say he generally takes the step up pretty well.

  59. I agree with BRL in regards to player ratings for two reasons.

No only are they subjective – earlier I read a blog that rated Sanchez Watt a 5.5 saying ‘Apart from the goal…’ I was almost expecting it to finish ‘what did the Romans do for us?’. Fabregas can miss loads of passes and retain a 7 but Denilson gets a 5 if one pass is misplaced. At the Emirates cup Fab passed to Eboue and the ball went two yards behind him. Eboue stuck a leg out behind him to keep it in but the ball went out. Some fans then hurled abuse at Eboue. Go figure. We all see what we want to see.

Secondly players are all interdependant. Sunu had a quiet night (therefore he must be bad) but Gilbert wasn’t linking up with him and overlapping. Sunu could have wandered of looking for the ball but that has been a major reason Eboue has been slated. Gilbert didn’t do the attacking thing and link up with Sunu, but our wingbacks have all been less attack minded in this 4-3-3 formation having been told to stay back. If you notice our wingbacks have all consequently scored lower this season.

We have to be careful about putting values to players in isolation. It is a team game and they all work together. For me the classic was Gilberto who made everyone else look good. He always got slated until he got injured and suddenly it was apparent what he brough to the team.

  60. Bragging Rights Ltd

    Yes. Nail on the head!

  61. wondrinfree

    very very true

Davi – keep your mouth shut, Walcott playing crap for months??!! you chat complete dog shite

  62. Guys..!!…

I need to watch the Arsenal v West Brom!! Where the hell can i download the full match? I have searched practically everywhere…

YW, do you know anywhere?? if not i gonna have to sign up to ATVO once again, problem is I dont have Internet at home to use it properly! :(

  63. JET got an assist for Blackpool last night apparently.

  64. Randall is a clever player who has got a great technique and vision. But as with most English players his decision-making and team understanding needs more work. Looks like a late-ish bloomer like Frank Lampard but such players have got to realise they can’t all be like Steven Gerrard (i.e. explosive and all action even though he’s calmed down somewhat now).

  65. A good win. I kept track of the match on Live scores and ESPN. I was thinking what is going on here when it was zero-zero about half way through the match. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  66. Delightful
You’ve convinced me. Hes a model of consistency

  67. chrisgoona

i have a strong suggestion for you and that is dont loose your own patiences just for a replay of an arsenal match coz i havent watch the match either and i am not whining as you are.

  68. I was at the game last night and was most impressed with Sceszney, Senderos, Gibbs, Coquelin and Ramsey.

Senderos the Milanese was class. Strong, confident, very calm under pressure (Nestaesque you could say!). Great cover for us to have. I’m hoping he stays long enough to battle it out with Djourou to become Willy G’s successor.

Coquelin shone out with his workrate, uncompromising tackling and quality passing in tight areas. Will definitely push for the first team next season.

Gibbs is already a better player than Wayne Bridge if you ask me. So he’s in the top two leftbacks in England. Wise beyond his years, ‘footballistically’ (!), and rapid as f*ck. But we already knew he was class.

Vela – exquisite touch, again, we already know this. Can’t wait to see him in the premiership, turning defenders inside out with a big grin on his face.

Ramsey was eveywhere. Great workrate again. As a senior member of this CC team he clearly feels he must take responsibility in the middle of the park – which is excellent. As has been pointed out, he overhit a few very ambitious passes. I like that he tried the audacious stuff though, it shows ambition and belief. In the premiership, he almost always plays the right pass, and keeps it very simple, nice and tidy. Last night, he tried a bit too hard. He settled down excellently though anyway.

The Jack & Aaron Show didn’t click quite as perfectly as I predicted in it’s pilot episode. There were a couple of genius little moments of interplay but Jack can be very hard to read and it’ll take much more playing time for Ramsey to clock the angles he makes and really start tearing sides apart. It will happen though.

We still need to find the right position for Nacer. He is too talented to let slip.

Sorry this is bit long, I’ll shut up.

  69. bobbygee,

You kept an eye out for us on the ESPN score feed? Cool, thanks for that.

    You tw*t.

  70. It seems that the whole world is against us again- insinuating that our Jackie boy made some racist comments to that Thomas guy. Our english players may be not considered english because they play for Arsenal full of dirty lying cheating foreign bast*rds. Is it only when they play for the national side and score a hatrick that they’ll be forgiven? If Di Matteo does know, as he claims, what Jack said to Thomas was, then why doesn’t he come forward with that and have justice served for Jack? Once a chavs, always a c*nt! And what’s wrong with AW’s comment about having no great vision and worse hearing ability? What is he? The six million dollar man? How is AW supposed to hear what Jack said from that afar?

Anyway, I posted the following article copied from BBC 606 in yesterday’s post as I felt it summarised my feelings towards another round of Arsenal media witchhunt. Now I don’t understand what is wrong with that article to have broken the BBC house rules and now get banned -maybe mentioning the great, honest england players??

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A57490842

    * * *
Whoa…check it out; Wilshere is to blame for Thomas getting sent off and knocking the Baggies out the league cup. What a little horror – he no doubt said something that justified a physical assault from a fellow professional…

Eduardo invented diving and as a result an unfortunate Celtic team got knocked out of the Champions League…hope that blagging Crozillian realises had it not been for his unique form of cheating Arsenal would be in the Europa league, with the Hoops riding high…

And to think, all this after putting Martin Taylor through an emotional roller-coaster for snapping his foot off with an perfectly legal tackle – horrid, insentitive thing to do…

Arsene Wenger – guilty of bringing all these cheating foreigners into our football, destroying the drunken, bone crunching brutal honesty of the English game with that intelligent but sinister European thing he does. The England team are rubbish because of Arsenal, shame on us…

And us, the evil fans of Arsenal football club…upsetting Adebayor by singing songs at him, songs we learnt from opposition fans over the last few years…it upset him so much he lashes out with his great feet, making us fans directly responsible for RVPs bleeding face, Cescs sore leg and a dazed steward…he is a sensitive lad and Sparky thinks we should of shown him some more respect, diddums! Sorry Mark, you are right, now go and teach Bellamy how to box.

It makes you wonder if AFC could of won a match this season without cheating or being evil…lucky for the world the bastions of the fair game and their Timelord manager, Man Utd, put us to the sword with a dazzling display of boring football and ‘clever’ play by Rooney. I wish Edu was as clever as Rooney.

Had they not of won the universe would of collapsed, starting in Fleet Street.

Arsenal is evil, look at them not spending ridiculous sums of money – EVIL! Look at them developing loads of English players but then not giving some of them a chance or selling them, ruining our WC squad – EVIL! Look at them playing intelligent beautifull football – EVIL! Look at Wenger defending his players with a version of ‘no comment’ – is he blind as well as EVIL??!!! Look at them not winning a trophy for one year longer than Liverpool – thats the evil making them rubbish!

To win we need to learn to be clever like Rooney, win ugly like Man Utd and Chelsea, spend stupid, vile, vulgar sums of cash on established arrogant primmadonnas, get rid of the Academy and save on the developmant costs of the youngsters…this should all be done via a sugar daddy, if possible one with a sinister, possibly criminal background, or by taking loans out worth twice the value of the clubs assets…thats the English way, dagnammit!!

    Not so happy chap today.

  71. Brilliant happychap

  72. happychap,

the BBC can’t be serious for removing your excellent rant, can they?
    What a bunch of a**holes.

  73. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Jack Wilshere has been accused of being racist by the despicable, hypocrite bastard that is the English media?

    That really, truly is laughable.

It looked like Jack just shot down his handshake, which he had every right to do.

  74. Happychap, your post is absolute ownage =D
It’s us against the world as always. Gunners for life!

  75. WFT………???

Racism now………I thought we were missing one….but heck!!

  76. Even Arsenal.com has given up trying to spell poor Wowcheque’s name

    (Wenger talks about)

    “Wojciech Szczesn’s debut in goal”

Did I read on here his nickname in the team is ‘Tech 9′? Isn’t that a machine gun or something?

Tech 9. mm. I think I like it.

  77. Brilliant rant HappyChap. Gave me some cheer!

  78. No player ratings please. I agree with BRL, utterly fucking pointless.

  79. btw, If you’ve not seen it yet, the legends mural looks great.

And Frank, all I could think of as I got the pre-match beers in was your legends pubs idea. Everyone I’ve spoken to think’s it’s a winner. Now to pitch it to the powerful bees.

I’m sure they’re inundated with suggestions, but I think a sound little business plan, some great sketches of this wonderful Arsenalised world, along with some stirring copy from a cross-section of fans, young and old – could provoke some interest.

  80. Tech 9 is indeed an interesting name. I watched the match on ATVO today and Schezzer the Tech 9 was truly impressive. I like his command of the box.

    Coquelin was also immense.

The game was a good test for the team and they passed with flying colours by doing a professional job. It will give them confidence for the next match.

The team that will be interesting to see for the next round is:

    Tech 9
    Gilbert/Hoyte Sendy Sly Gibbs
    Merida Coquelin Rambo
    Little Jack Willy, Walcott, Vela

  81. Good to see so many of the first team attending and enjoying the game last night. I noticed Cesc, Rosicky, Nasri, Arshavin, Eboue and TV and a couple of others in the player area behind the reserves.

Also read the words of Cesc in the Programme from last night:

“Although I wont be playing tonight, I am excited about the game. Its always special for me to watch CC matches, because its where I started and is where you see what the young players can do, keeping an eye out for the special talents that are emerging… I watched much of our FA Youth Cup run last season, including the final against Liverpool here, and the quality of the guys performances was unbelievable – with their confidence and strength you’d think you were watching the first team, and I was very happy to see that. It all goes to demonstrate the quality of our Academy.”

He also mentioned that he was quiet in the last 15 mins (including goal celebration) last Saturday because of a knock (kick he took).

Doesn’t look like the words of someone disinterested and pining for a move away to me.

  82. Limper.

How about starting an online petition on Go Petition and eloquently explain the idea of the Legends pub, the rationale behind it and the spirit it captures for the Arsenalization. It’ll be hard for the administration to ignore such a petition, and the like minded bloggers can spread the word for their readers to sign the petition.

I’d like to see a King Henry XIV pub.

  83. jbh, thanks for the cesc story, it was really begining to piss me off re the stories of why cesc is so quiet. If people dont understand how commited he is by now…
good result last night, more important than the performance at this stage of the season, many wont have played together since the youth cup final. didnt see the game but noticed that there will be highlights shown of an unnamed game on friday sky sports extra, i think 9 oclock, might be us but dont know

  84. I agree…it is an exceptional idea.

  85. At least we have a ready replacement for when Fab goes next summer!!!

  86. Well spotted jbh, that certainly is good to see. Cesc bloody loves us. I left my programme on the train before I’d read any of that so thanks.

Darius, I’ll look into that. I didn’t think online petitions carried too much weight but as part of a strong case put down on paper, it’d certainly help illustrate a point.

Two issues I can think of, firstly getting local landlords and other business owners onside. Demonstrating the positive effect the Arsenal Legend pubs will have on the area as a whole will be key.

We’d need to include comment and yay votes from local business owners – somehow persuading local landlords that more competition will somehow benefit them – not sure how to do this yet.

The other thing is to show that we are not simply particularly thirsty Arsenal fans who just want more beer, quicker.

Disassociating ourselves from the negative connotations of drinking and selling the Arsenal Legends pubs as platforms for more diverse businesses than simply boozers is important.

Showing opportunites for merchandising, a wider selection of food, a showcase for Arsenal’s history, photography exhibition space, space for the willow foundation and other charities to do their thing, local artists (too jazzy?). All sorts of opportunities to make money whilst importantly making our home more homely, more exciting, more interesting, and more ours. A buzzing stadium alive with real Arsenal people, debating, enjoying each others company and spending money – helps the club in many different ways. One of the things I was first fell for about Arsenal, was Highbury. We must try and have the Emirates pack the same kind of punch, to keep hooking the generations that will follow us. Wenger and the boys are more than keeping their end up, we must do our bit.

And we don’t want just any pubs, these will be the finest pubs around, with timeless interiors, none of this white washed pub-by-numbers rubbish. And if a pub isn’t working, say if ‘Lineghan’s’ is looking a bit rough around the edges and people aren’t coming in, they’re all next door at Sol’s, then scrap it, sell the license to another local entrepreneur who wants to make a go of it, say Coquelin’s Wine Bar, or Robbie P’s Boulangerie (think big smiling picture of Pires in a chef’s hat frosted into the window), and we’re away. again.

  87. Regarding ideas for improvement, if you go to Arsenal.com…contact us, there is an option there for passing on ideas. They do get back to you. Although I think that the Atmosphere Coordinator was a load of bollocks. If enough people write in they may pay attention. I have a suspicion that they have sold the outlets as a single contract to Sweeney Todd Pies for the Gentry plc for a thousand years…but you never know.

  88. Sorry that’s really long and rambling. I need to get a coherent plan together.

  89. I liked your idea to have stalls on the concourse Frank.
Would be amazing if stalls could stay during the week as well. Selling what? Arsenal merchandise of course, but who knows…most of Hackney does it’s shopping down at Ridley Road so there must be a demand. And whenever I venture out past the marshes into Bogland, the markets are always rammed.
Will never get by the Health & Safety/Council Wallah’s I fear.

  90. Very good post Happychap.

  91. The way to deal with the health and safety people is to give them a special invite to a match. Give them a tour of the stadium finishing just before kickoff in the centre circle, and then on a secret arse whistle signal all the supporters stand up in their seats with cigarettes, cigars, pipes and lighted flares. The health and safety people would all have heart attacks and then we could maybe get our own people in there.

  92. Lighted flares?

But then our supporters would be accused of not being ‘English’ enough.

  93. But it would look cool…

    Light ‘em up!

  94. Thanks so much for that Jbh! Glad to hear that Cesc’s ok. Made me so happy ^_^!

  95. Limper.

Good thoughts you have there. Like any idea, they take some thinking through and they need to be chewed over and refined. My sense is that it will be a challenge to keep the campaign going, and there are inevitable stumbling blocks.

However, I also know that publicans are desperate to try out anything that thinks outside the box. With such an idea of the Legends “circuit”, there is an opportunity to build a sustainable community feel and for the pubs to play a role in the community.

There will always be a question about the positives vs negatives of being seen as a “drinking den” as opposed to having a community role. Given the chance, its easy to make a case either way so it does depend on how positive you can sell your story.

I would start by taking a step back and considering what is the objective of embarking on such a project, what are its aims, who are the stakeholders in the club and the local community, and what would be involved. Once that overarching strategy is fleshed out and articulated, then its easier to sell it to anyone who will listen. I’m sure even at the club, there’s folks in the commercial department that would want to look at the feasibility of such a project.

  96. Thanks Darius, good advice.

I’m not sure I’m quite the man to launch a sustained campaign at this stage in my life, but it’s certainly an idea that I’m excited by, as it would improve the match day experience (and every other day, as Finsburyparker says, have the Ems open all week round, shops, stalls, a musuem, restaurants, bars, plenty of room for everyone). I think there’s pots of money to be made from it too.

I will try and take an objective view of the whole idea as you say, think it all through, sketch it out in a way which can’t fail to whet their appetites and drop a letter to the powerful bees.

  97. @ LimparAssist

I agree with Frank, I don’t think there’s any need to go straight for an online petition – just contact Arsenal directly. I suspect you will find they are desperate for fans’ ideas and involvement in the Arsenalisation project. However, I think Frank is also right that the contracts already in place will almost certainly have been long-term. But it’s always worth asking.

    ***

    @ Darius Stone
It’s bothering me on his behalf, so please stop calling LimparAssist “Limper”. He’s clearly anything but limp! :)

  98. LOL Fun Gunner. My bad.

    I’ll call him Anders then.

@Limper assist, I do agree with FG that there’s folks working on the Arsenalization project and interested in the clubs commercial fortunes who will be interested in listening to a well thought out and articulated idea.

However, I don’t think the fact that current operaters having long term contracts is a fact that will hinder the project. A good consultation will give the idea an opportunity to be fleshed out and for current operaters to consider their involvement in such a project. Ownerships and/or contracts do not have to change hands to accommodate the Arsenalization idea.

In fact, it could be a selling point to current operators because the idea makes good business sense.

  99. Is it Saturday yet?

  100. Cheers FunGunner and thanks again Darius,

I’ll of course run the shiny new articulated version of this idea past the ACLF crew once I get it drafted out.

And everyone can have their tuppence worth before I send it off. If it passes the ACLF acid test then I reckon there’s something in it.

It would certainly feel good to open a line of dialogue with the club about it.

I wasn’t going to say anything about ‘Limper’ while you were being so helpful – but yeah, Anders, Limpar, or The Assist are all preferable to Limper. Sounds like I’m in convalescence.

  101. Did any one see the new spuds video on Arsenal Action? It’s funny

  102. Jay Simpsons starting against the Ch*vs.

    COYG!

  103. G4E thanx for a good laugh… although it may not be everyone’s cup of venom..

    No you’re betta… No you’re betta lol

  104. Hope Jay scores against Chelski

  105. How about LimpAss?

  106. Everton is giving Hull a Hell of a spanking…good, well not see brown ass face in the CC. One down, Two to go.

  107. Arsenal the great

    LimparAssist

Neither of Senderos nor Djourou will replace Gallas in two seasons time because they’re not good enough. Watch out for Bartley and Ayling to do that job.

When Nasri comes back and we also have Rosicky where will Denilson play? I have a feeling that that Arsene sees Diaby as a first XI when fit so where will Denilson be?

    Check the midfield of:

    Nasri Song Cesc

    Diaby Song Cesc

    Nasri Diaby Rosicky

    Rosicky Song Cesc

Denilson will be ‘footballistically’ dead when all is fit and will find myself happy to see the back of him. Not good enough.

  108. F*ck of Howard

  109. footballistically my foot

  110. Man U winning, I wonder how much added time today.

  111. 3.28 mins

  112. I am somewhat late, but..

    fucking fantastic Happy Chap!

  113. Arsenal the great

i agree with you on your fact about denilson coz i have been saying this for quite a while know and no one seems to listen to my own advice. and all they do is criticise me on behalf of my own personal opnion and which isnt good and denilson is even worse.and by the way thanks for pulling that out coz i though i was alone on claiming that denilson is shit and even he is not good enough for the arsenal.

  114. F*ck Off Howard…

  115. Denilson is the greatest!

  116. kenyan gunner

no he is not coz he is the shittest player wenger has ever bought and he is not good enough has i said in the below comment i postedt.and therefore i dont know what football do you watch if you think denilson he is the “greatest”

  117. kenyan gunner

no he is not coz he is the shittest player wenger has ever bought and he is not good enough for us and has i said in the below comment i posted you would know what i am talikng about.and therefore i dont know what football do you watch if you think denilson he is the “greatest”

  118. denilson has been our best player this season

  119. To my fellow Americans…did you see the USA.Arsenal.Com?

    It’s not bad.

  120. when Fit the first 11 midfield is

    Dennilson Cesc Song.

  121. Why is there a different arsenal.com for the USA?

  122. Arsenal has lots of fans in America, but many of those fans find the unusual spelling on arsenal.com difficult to understand. Words like “football” also cause them problems. There have been complaints from some that Barack Obama is given too little praise on arsenal.com.

  123. I just had a look – as well as most of the usual .com features, to be fair it’s quite localised to America with info about US Arsenal supporters clubs and a section on Colorado Rapids as well as a feature on ex-gunner Ljungberg and his progress in Seattle things which would not feature prominently on the official site.

  124. Barack who?

  125. He’s the current fuhrer of the Great Satan.

  126. Oh dear oh dear oh dear..this simply will not do. I can see the London cultural heritage of the club going right down the pan here. The current administration have already demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of these issues. The fucking fuckers have fucked up right royally here.

  127. @CB and PZ

you should add the disclaimer IMO.

To others he is the promised Messiah.

To matters football LOL at PZ re: 9:16 am. Will an African version be created? We call a mutmeg Chobo Center backs Baker and we just cant understand some of these nutmeg, center back terms

  128. Any American supporter who does not appreciate that Arsenal is a club in London…thats the one in England, should fuck off.

  129. This USA development is very, very unwelcome news. No wonder it was not announced in lights on Arsenal.com.

  130. For those wishing to engage in a dialogue with the club regarding new ideas for improving the supporter experience, there are links to the supporters forum and to RedAction on arsenal.com, the English version that is.

  131. Intriguingly it does not seem to be possible to get to arsenal.com/usa from arsenal.com…why is that?
