Injuries Whilst Arsene, Cesc & Eboue Get Feisty

Liege is done, finished and over, Wigan instead looming no less large on the horizon and no less impressive. It would not be Arsenal if there were not the odd injury or ten to be concerned about. Denilson has back-knack which will keep him out for up to three weeks apparently. It is not all bad with Robin van Persie apparently set to return for Saturday’s clash whilst Manuel Almunia is either recovered from a virus or not, depending on which news outlet you believe.

Tomas Rosicky tried to brighten Wenger’s day with his assessment of his own form since returning from injury. Whilst 90 minutes in total is a bit of a short time to judge himself on, Tomas believes that things can only get better:

I am not anywhere near my best, and still have plenty of room to improve. I will get better. It is difficult when you are out for such a long time. But when you play, you just have to forget that. I am just enjoying being back. I am fit and itching to play football again.

Let’s hope that the fit part is right. Arsenal suffer a high number of injuries although I suspect it is probably not any worse that other clubs, we are just more aware of it. This is an area that was discussed in this morning’s Arsecast. As footballers become more athletic, they are susceptible to the same strains that can plague sprinters. The more short bursts of movement, the more pressure put on their muscles. Add into this that Arsenal players are the most consistently active of Premier League sides it is a price that has to be paid.

Rosicky is going to be a key player at the moment in allieviating the pressure on Cesc. Too much reliance is placed on the Spaniard when other key figures are injured and anyone who can take on some of the burden is most welcome. Even so, not too much should be expected of Rosicky in the next few weeks as he regains fitness, dipping in and out of matches before being able to complete a full 90 minutes.

One person definitely out is Andrei Arshavin. Wenger commented yesterday that the Russian had a 10% chance of playing tomorrow. Whilst the manager is notoriously poor with his guesswork about when players will return to action, I would be surprised if he was that inaccurate and Arshavin plays this weekend.

Still perhaps Arsene’s mind is elsewhere, conjuring up ways in which Acme can help him bring about the downfall of Karl-Heinz Rummeneigge in an elaborate manner. Some might argue that would be entirely fitting given Arsenal’s footballing philosophy.

The banning of transfers for Under-18s is another ill-thought out concept by Platini and Blatter. They will not stop the cherry-picking of Europe’s best players by the biggest clubs. If French and Italian teams are right royally fed up with the Big Four getting their talent on the cheap, they ain’t seen nothing yet. All this ban is going to achieve is a dearth of talent in those leagues as the bigger clubs seek out players at a younger age and bring them over before they have chance to sign with a native professional team. This is before the Iberian peninsula clubs utilise the fast-tracking of passport applications that they grant to nationals of former colonies.

Rummeneigge is on ground that is shifting so quickly he might think it quicksand. FC Bayern are obviously not the same FC Bayern that has living quarters for 13 overseas players in their training complex. Nor is it the same FC Bayern who has 4 out of their current 18 youth players born outside of Germany. No, there is another FC Bayern who has been trading on the name illegally and in no way is Herr Rummeneigge talking out of his arschloch. Rummeneigge’s legacy to football will be what exactly? Nauseating as a player, beyond irritating as an administrator is my suspicion.

Not that Arsene is alone is lashing out. Emmanuel Adebayor may have received a three match ban from the FA for his stamp on Robin van Persie but the damage was much deeper than that, with a whole host of jelly and ice cream going to others as his former teammates round on him and withdraw their birthday party invitations. The infamous tag team of Eboue and Fabregas defended the honour of Arsenal, keeping the rancour going. The comments by Eboue are the ones which highlight the disappointment felt within the squad the most acutely but hey, we move on to the weekend and a chance to get back to winning ways domestically.

’til Tomorrow.

  1. Well atleast Toure has the respect and honour. Toure knows what Arsenal have done for him and he’s career.

  2. The Wigan match is crucial, I cannot believe I’m saying that word in September, we need all 3 pts nothing else matters. Being 9 pts off the top spot isn’t the end of the world, but again it’s not the best position to be in. Also on the Liege match, over here the commentators must of said that Man City would K.O. us out of the 4th spot like a 100 times, it made me sick to my gut!!! Where do they dig up these retards??

  3. …………Mannone

  4. oi, yogi’s bear, how come you get to listen to the arsecast before its been posted, eh? checked arseblog 8:45 this morning and todays post was’nt in. are you the arseblogger guest last night or what? we need answers

  5. So now Eboue and Song don’t chat with Adebayhore. How many friends has he got? The guy can’t even go back to Togo because he fears for his life…. soon he will have to find another country

  6. Please help! I think I am beginning to love Eboue!

  7. Great post YW- The whole under 18′s rule is unsettling, hopefully it’s just a stab from the powers at epl big four, and not something that will be enforced. Wenger stated that in doing this it will only give powers to agents and cause another set of problems. Am I right in thinking that he expects agents to have so much power they will set up whole ‘Puppy Farms’ of top quality youth to be purchased once 18?

Anyway even if this was the case I could well see uefa / fifa siding with this future rather than our premier league continuing to dominate in the youth end of the market.

  8. Though I really hate Emanuel IloveCashMore

  9. What where Eboue’s comments?

  10. thanks drew.

  11. Eboue has really impressed me, that is a man who has a real reason to hate us for what some fans did to him. Yet time and time again he says how much he loves the club and Wednesday aside he has fought hard and played well for the team this season.

A strength of character and a willingness to prove his doubters wrong is a measure of the man and an example Adecashmore could well do himself a favour and learn from.

  12. YES! Thats good stuff.

  13. Wigan will be an interesting match. I don’t recall Arsenal losing to them in the league at any time, though the matches with Wigan have been quite dramatic – from Paul Jewel accusing the referee of wearing an Arsenal shirt and gifting us a game, to a 5 goal first half bonanza at the JJB that gave you goose bumps considering we just about came out 3-2 winners.

Kirkland will be their key player if he starts as he has a history of pulling saves against us just like Shay Given does. But just like with Standard Liege, we should have enough about us to get away with the 3 points.

Those who might think it’ll be a walk in the park may well be warned to prepare for hairy moments that could be heart attack inducing – but it wouldn’t be football if it was straight forward, would it?

I don’t subscribe to the notion that we should go into this match fearing that we’ll lose momentum. Wigan players are the one’s who should be filled with fear the minute Gunnersorrus greets them off the bus. They should go into this game feeling worried about a good hiding if they try and play against us as Martinez wants them to play, they should remember the hiding they got from the Arsenal young guns even with Polassios and Valencia in their team.

Arsenal on the other hand need to play their game and be disciplined about it. They need to be arrogant without being complaicent and they need to do a professional job and then start getting ready for the Baggies.

  14. Darius we really should be fired up for wigan now.

I thought they had beaten us once? Maybe it was a draw that felt like a defeat.

  15. The best approach to Wigan is calmness, me thinks.

  16. Drew10,

You’re so right about Eboue, its just a shame he’s so shit at football

  17. I would just like to mention that Eboue made an important and difficult clearance in the Standard Liege game. He was facing our goal and a low cross came in from the right. Somehow, he managed to clear the ball over the bar when an own goal seems likely. I’m not sure if it is sheer luck or skill. Score then was 3-2.

Another piece of good defending was by the much maligned Clichy. He made a saving tackle inside our box with the Standard player threatening to break through right down the middle.

Those were match turning moments. Credit to these 2 fullbacks for the night. I’m not sure if anyone else noted these moments. But credit given where they are due.

  18. Thanks Luke for highlighting clichy. Although he struggled at times and his offensive game was pretty much none excistent i counted three super interventions. For me he is one of the best 3 full backs in world football, its a shame that people(media) focus on the msitakes. Looking forward to the game on Sat.

  19. After the champions league game with standard liege, I only wonder what is going to transpire as we progress in the competition.

I fail to comprehend when will Wenger stop his “youngsters all the way” chant and try and buy some experienced players. Arsene of late is making a fool outta himself, whether it be standing like a joker in the stands at Old Trafford or being treated as a joker by the media when he always ends up saying “I DID NOT SEE IT”.

It has now all boiled down to Arsene’s ego and arrogance, for if he buy’s new players now his theory of building a team from young prodigies falls flat on the face. What he fails to understand is in today’s scenario a young player who turns out to be a great player for Arsenal will always be attracted to other big clubs. Like in the case of Fabregas, with him going to Barca coming season which is almost certain.

It is time that we change our mindset of losers who play the most beautiful football in Europe.. Coz at the end of the day what matters is the most number of trophies we can win.

I just pray that next time we play at home there are a few gooners in the stadium with a banner that says “BUY SOME DECENT PLAYERS ARSENE” instead of the idiotic “IN ARSENE WE TRUST” posters. We need players who have that swagger and grit, which Patrick and Henry possessed.

Just hoping that Sir Arsene thinks all of what has been said and written, and brings in a few decent players in winter and expands the squad.

    “ARSENAL FOREVER”

  20. Luke Boomer do you not think that his attacking game is sufferng as he has a lot less cover in this system, especially when song and denilson are split.

  21. How come james/ jimbo/ Bimbo. JohnyGun

    always gets mean looking avatars?

Does it say anything about his posts?

  22. Amit Wenger has recently purchased Arshavin, Nasri, Vermaelen none of which are kids.

  23. How come my Avatar is the most rediculous ever created. I dare anybody to compete.

  24. You win the league by beating the likes of Wigan consistently, Manure proved it last season by winning only 1 game against the top 4. We have to show no mercy to the lower sides. Players need to respect these teams and give 100%.

  25. Is Platini the Arschlochness monster?

  26. @1LC

true that. And for that reason i think man U will struggle this time round. They had the fake Ronaldo to turn to as he was adept at bullying the small teams(Think manU had nine 1-0 games )

if we had nine 1-0 games everyone would go ballistic that we are loosing our touch. For us only 3-0 would do…

on a different matter i hope man city defeats man U. So that those two can stay in the media lime light for a little while, while we get a match winning run going under the radar..

  27. @els

me thinks that boomer’s avatar is among the top 10 most impish avatars… yours will make the top 20 though.

  28. Bergkamp. Wow

  29. Arsenalkabisa??? His looks like the mona lisa compared to mine haha, but thanks I think. Anyway how DO you get these natty ones like your little bimler. Have you had to post some comments worth reading? If so i’m goosed :)

  30. The Great Yogi is featured on ‘Arsecast’, this mroning.

Interesting points particularly about the injuries. I didn’t know that we covered more ground than anybody else.

  31. Does he talk like jerry adams used to with the crazy voice and that???

  32. els
Yea i think your right, clichy likes to get up the arse of the wingers and sometimes he guesses wrong, but your point about not having cover is spot on, and to be honest that is going to be a problem with 433 imo especially when play has moved inside, with that system its important than ever to not lose posesion, wenger seems to be mixing his formations still to suit players ability/mobility/pace/vision ect. But like they say form is temparary class lasts forever. Now could someone tell me what avatar is, im guessing its my little face but not really sure

  33. If it is then its pretty life like and thats why i dont go out much

  34. Eboue:
“”I am very, very happy because the FA have given him a three-game ban.”

  35. boomer haha sorry mate is yours a photo. I feel really bad now. Haha. (Avatar is the cheeky pic). James Cameron is making a movie about our pics soon.

You got something there I really think the 433 is in early days and all will come good. I’m sure the balance between cover and attack will settle. Sagna and Clichy were always going to have more to do defensively when you take away the wide players ahead of them.

  36. Yogi’s Warrior,

From the stats at Physioroom, Arsenal suffers more injuries than other Top 4 clubs.

The lowlier clubs suffer more injuries.

  37. Jerome at work, Gadget at home

Adebayor shows that he doesn’t undertsand basic conepts such as regret for an event.

    http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_5566676,00.html

Twat! You don’t regret something for intent. Will someone explain to this immoral fool that when I regret crashing my car, the issue of intent is utterly irrelevant

  38. Bragging Rights Ltd

Somehow, I don’t think one will stick! The song’s on Youtube by a slightly ambiguous chap called Samwell. It’s quite unsettling!

I said Watt Watt, Sanchez Watt
I said Watt Watt, Sanchez Watt
I said Watt Watt, Sanchez Watt
I said Watt Watt, Sanchez Watt
Do we want a goal from Watt, Sanchez Watt?
Do we want a goal from Watt, Sanchez Watt?
Do we want a goal from Watt, Sanchez Watt?
Let’s get a goal from Watt, OK!

    He’s running at high speed
    Over there
    We all agree
    He’s got flair
    They don’t have a prayer
    It’s just not fair
    Watch him move
    With his tied-back hair
    Watt Watt

    (chorus)

    It’s OK
If you have a little fright
    Don’t you worry
He won’t bite (not that hard)
    When he hits it
    You’ll see some power
    A football hitman
    He’s deadly like Jack Bauer

    (Chorus)

  39. Amazing…the obsession with Adebayor.
Many of our fans are simply too smug and self-righteous. Of course Adebayor has behaved like a total jackass and deserves every bit of the punishment being dished out by the FA but it simply does not exonerate some of own fans from their own loutishness especially the racist songs and venom that started long ago.
I expect ACLFers to keep the high road and leave the xenophobia and racism to the Le Whore and their ilk.

  40. This injury problem we experience is a mystery to me. I used to think it was due to the tender ages of players like walcott, vela and that their baby bones were still growing, the theory of being more tech-nickle i think is fare also in some cases. Years ago i dont remember it happening that much, but years ago the sun always seemed to shine as well so it could be my faultering memory. What i find enoying is that it always seems to be our best/creative players. What goes round comes round though, so im not planning to cut my wrists just yet

  41. Ade’s only friend now is Susan Boyle

  42. Everyone seems to of missed the fact that Susan Boyle was sitting in the stands at Eastlands, three rows from the Arsenal away fans. He was simply celebrating in front of his best pal

  43. Amit

Wenger making a fool out of himself? He is probably the most highly regarded and respected manager about. Always backs his players, has love and devotion towards his club, feels a commitment to the fans, has a burning desire to bring continued success to the club, implements probably the most attractive footballing teams, breeds young players to play great football at the same time breeding loyalty….. i can go on and on…

So while Sir red nose and bartender Benitez are paying huge sums for proven over rated crap our club is moving forward within our own capabilities, and the rewards will come.

Don’t come on this blogg and take the piss please

  44. Anyway how DO you get these natty ones like your little bimler.

    http://en.gravatar.com

Just do next next next and then done… ejnoy…

  45. @Boomer

might Wengers wasy of rotating players be to “injure” them?

a la Lehman. Gets the pressure off the player and the tam? Maybe he is just rotating…

  46. I agree with Amit

  47. boomer

It is very frustrating, and yes I always feel it us our creative attacking players. I suppose its because they are the ones getting clattered by the opposing defenders.

You just wonder if United or Chelsea or Liverpool had 6 or 7 1st team players out, most being attacking players… how would they fair?

I think our squad is better equipped than all the other top4 in the respect of dealing with injuries, not mainly down to quality, but we know that what ever player comes in now we can trust them as they are likely to have played before, and they have considerable amount of gametime under their belts.

Players like: Djourou, Diaby, Traore, Eboue, Senderos…

these players aren’t necessarily starters, but they have a fair few minutes under their belt. Add on top of them all our more flair players waiting to break through:

Wilshire, Ramsey, Gibbs, Vela, and even Nasri

To think we have 9 contenders for 1st team places out is amazing and frightening to what will happen when we get a few back.

Im very optimistic, and im pretty certain the other teams will stutter in form once a few injuries hit. Especially Liverpool

  48. James / JohnnyGun / Spud MUG

a SPUD would agree of course, you still not found a decent Spurs site? aaawwww pooor little Spud

  49. ChrisGoona,

Tabbed browsing baby, A genius Invention.

So chris, Have you managed to get to a game yet?

And I hope you’ve been studying your Arsenal History like I told you to, I will be testing you later this month, ok?

  50. Well said Shotta.

It’s beyond me how people can get so self-righteous about an OTT goal celebration. Thierry used to wind up fans something rotten, saving his best for the hapless, comedy Sp*ds, and we all love him for that.

Lock Ade up for the stamp on Robin and the shocker on Cesc – but a wideboy celebration, having been provoked all game, it’s just football.

“I scored and I wanted to show people it is not a good idea to abuse me. They were shouting personal abuse at me even before the match kicked off.

“I was running on pure emotion and when you take emotion out of football we are going to have a big problem.”

I hate to say it, cos the man is clearly nuts, but this I agree with.

In the stands you can’t just dish it out all game and then get indignant when your whipping boy turns round and scores against you. You’ve fully asked for it.

A class act will not celebrate scoring against a former club. But Ade’s no class act, so why the suprise? Ade’s just a bit of a w*nker, and now, under the guidance of Mark Hughes, he seems to have become a bit of a headcase too. It’s sad but sh*t happens.

I’m with Eboue, if he apologises I’ll thank God, if he doesn’t, he can get f*cked cos we are Arsenal.

  51. ‘Djourou, Diaby, Traore, Eboue, Senderos’

Chris, theres only one problem with this list, and thats the fact that all the players on it are shit

  52. OG

Physioroom is but a snapshot of current injuries. In two months time, there may well be a different picture.

    YW

  53. YW, Do you believe Arsenal fans were wrong to be so aggresive and violent?

  54. Spud Mug JohnnyGun

Professional and International players are shit? Wierd

  55. I agree with Shotta and LA.

Just because Ade was completety mad to do what he did doesn’t make it serious.

    Kicking people, yes, celebrating, no.

  56. James Wether those players are int’s or not they are NOT shit players.

    arsenalkabisa thanks v much

  57. ChrisGoona,

sp*ddies are on the fall just like everybody could foresee except the tiny totts, so the only way for James eh sorry I mean Johnny to cope with it is to come to an Arsenal blog and stir things up. Sad little sp*d.
We should leave sad little troll alone.

  58. Donkey Dawson, Fatty Huddlestone, Fraz Campbell, Pavlov’s lame Dog, Jermaine ‘I’d rather play tennis’ Jenas, (Or Jermaine ‘Can’t find his penis’ Jenas – dependant on pronunciation), Punchbag Bentley, Alan ‘Instantly Forgotten’ Hutton…

JohnnyGun, here is a list of truly sh*te players.

I’m sure your second string is packed with many, many more. All over paid, all over hyped and in all likelihood, all c*nts.

    See you on Halloween.

  59. Chris, There OK players and thats about it, playing with players like Fabregas and Arshavin they’ll probably be just enough to gain you fourth spot again, but they are still about three classes down from Wengers teams of the past and if they played every game you’d have zero chance of winning the league, thats the Trooof !!!

You do miss me on this blog dont you, admit it.

I am the Ying that inspires the Yang

  60. Limpar, I know, thats what we have to put up with. Now do you see why everyone thinks you are a bunch of whining girls?

  61. Notlager, for the last time, I am not going to marry you, I dont care what you say or what car you drive

  62. Johnny Gun

When you stop posting under so many pseuydonyms, you might find people engage with you. Oh, and have something half-decent to say as well rather than the usual old bollocks.

    YW

  63. So James have you admitted that you are a spud there by saying “just enough to gain YOU fourth spot”??? I just thought ti was an insult and not true.

Erm I think Frazier Campbell plays for Sunderland now Limpar, or where you refering to past and present.

  64. James

We can never miss you, maybe if you stayed rooted to the bottom of the Premiership last year and ended up in the Championship for 50 years I might consider it. Its still a ikelihood that you might go down, never underestimate the shitness of the Spuds. haha

  65. YW, I didnt want to change but you kept banning me.

Have to go now anyway, bye bye

  66. els

We should leave Spud Mug (James or little JohnnyGun) be… just ignore him.. its the same annoying record being played over and over.

I can imagine the little schoolboy now, giggling with his other little Spuddy mates. Get back to your school work young chap, Spurs are shit so get over it.

Find yourself a spurs blogg if there is any? I wonder how awful the discussions would be!!

  67. JohnnyGun is clearly deranged.

  68. Thank god for that

  69. Flint McCullough

    Excellent article, YW.

The combination of no under 18 international transfers with the new PL rule will, of course mean it will be impossible to have a non English or Welsh lads at the club to qualify as 1 of the 8 home grown players in the squad of 25.

Come on Amit, name names & how you do propose finding the £150m to pay for them?

Sell the the soul of the club to Usmanov, I suppose.

    Some sort of “Arsenal Forever”!!

  70. YW,

They used to publish totals, showing how much time was lost to injury per club. Also how many injuries each club had, and how much it cost to treat the injuries.

  71. More “Arsenal on the Never Never!!, Flint.

Any more spuds and I’ll post the link to that great song “Fatty Huddlestone” Again.

I think it’ll be great having Eddy playing at home again, he’ll get a great response all game – and he’ll score to repay us.

Although it’s hard to drop Bendtner on current form.

    I don’t know. Decisions, decisions…

  73. I think we will DEFINITELY win against wigan. I dont see them as a team that would get “stuck in” to us.

Martinez seems more of a passing football kind of manager, which will play right into our hands. We will always beat teams with that kind of mentality. The real test will come with the likes of stoke, bolton etc. Will we cope? Time will tell.

But at the moment I am delighted with our team chipping away till the end, despite going down against liege, that is the spirit, and its highly ENCOURAGING.

Something certainly needs to be done about the team’s collective mental cohesiveness though, or we will pay big time. We need a defensive midfielder and I desperately hope arsene will bring one in during the january window.

Got to say, Aaron needs to play with song behind cesc. The lad is a bundle of energy and he seems to have the box to box quality about him complete with a fearless attitude that will take him very far. I have a feeling that he will become the skipper of the club when cesc leaves.

And oh, yes nikki B as the lone frontman not the wing please….

    Cheers all!!

  74. @Amit

There was once Vieira told Wenger to buy some world class players. Wengers reply?

“When i bought you, you weren’t a world class player.”

    Classic. Go figure.

  75. Limp,

I think it is quite easy to drop Nik on current form personally!

I think if fit enough, Rosicky has to start, and drop Nik for RVP.

  76. Nagagunner – “I think we will DEFINITELY win against wigan. I dont see them as a team that would get “stuck in” to us. ”
I think it is this OTT triumphalism that typically gets the team in trouble and the home fans shell-shocked when a team like Wigan scores an early freak goal and then parks the bus. A day later Nagagunner will shamelessly make a post along the lines that the players are mentally weak, blah, blah. We have got to hold our expectations and emotions in check; nobody in the Premiership (or the Champs League) is going to hand us easy victories, least of all Wigan. Fact is our players are oftentimes guilty of not keeping their emotions in check and just doing the a professional job (Man City anyone) but the fans are oftentimes way out of line.
Tomorrow will be tough and I don’t buy into the b.s. from Martinez that his team is coming to play. He is just blowing smoke up our arse. Man U and City have shown how we can be beaten (sit back and counter-attack) and Martinez would be a lunatic to do anything else.

  77. He did indeed somp on his head. the ban was right for that incident. http://bobbygee.wordpress.com/

  78. Can’t wait till Vela or Walcott are back.

An AW team without some stupidly quick speedsters in it just isn’t the same.

Then we’ll see some serious counter-attacking play.

Maybe not against the 10 man defence of Birmingham etc., but you know what I mean.

  79. shotta-gunna!

“Man U and City have shown how we can be beaten (sit back and counter-attack)”, let me also add, kick us to bits. That is exactly what I am saying we NEED to have mental fortitude to deal with.

I certainly dont think wigan will be the team to do that. As I said above I expect that from the likes of boltons and stokes of this world. You see tony mowbray believes in the passing game as well and we never had problems with west brom or in the recent ties against celtic.

Yes, I do agree with you that the team must not be complacent. Nothing can be taken for granted, you are right, and I HOPE the team hears you as well :)

    Cheers!!!

  80. 4:1 to the Arsenal. Really.
    Just goes to show.

  81. I was listening to some podcast reviewing the champions league games and I’m getting really hacked off with the immediate reference by pundits to Arsenal being that of missing “a Vieira” or “a Petit”.

With all due respect to the legendary status of Vieira, he’s past his sell by date. I’d rather remember him for his contribution to the Arsenal as opposed to a reminder that we need his clone.

What is this obsession with the media and looking for a replacement of the old missus since she left us. Arsenal has moved onto a new generation of players and the media and its hacks need to move on. Maybe we should start having pundits in their early to mid 20′s as they are more relevant in this day and age as opposed to the “used to be” experts in their 70′s and 80s and pundits who are stuck in the time warp of the good old days.

  82. Matt

On current form, Bendtner is the forward most likely to score having done so in each of his last three games. Personally, I suspect that Eboue will make way for RvP with Bendtner reverting to the right flank.

    YW

  83. Darius Stone

Agreed, you make some very good points on each post, keep it up!

Your point on getting some younger pundits in on the act could revive the media industry in football. These old guys keep getting on my tits!!

I don’t think we are the only fans who think this also

  84. YW

Bendtner has to start, unless hes due a rest maybe?

  85. My guess on the starting 11 is…

    ———Almunia———
    Sagna-Gallas-Verm-Clichy
    —Cesc-Song-Ramsey—
    RvP—Bendtner—Eduardo

I think Ramsey is in Wenger’s thinking for a start, he looks ready for 90mins. Last season i think it was a bit soon to place so much trust in the young lad. Then again you have Rosicky, Diaby and also Eboue who can be drafter in Midfield.

Rosicky could be given a chance off the bench after starting in midweek. Has Diaby done enough to keep his place i wonder? I doubt Wenger will keep RvP on the bench if fit, so maybe Diaby will sit out.

Gibbs also has a little chance, I think Clichy could well start again because Carling Cup in midweek will see Gibbs get a run out anyway.

  86. drafted… not drafter!!

  87. Here’s some new news. Wenger says he is still interested in Chamakh
    http://justarsenal.com/wenger-says-he-may-buy-chamakh-in-january/851
It looks like we may need him with all these injuries. In fact we may need about another five players!

  88. A very good article underlining our problems,

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8263012.stm

    Cheers all!!

  89. It’s going to be interesting the battle in the middle of the park against Wigan.

Martinez grew up in Catalonia at a time when Cruyff was instilling his model of play at Barcelona. In essence ARsenal and Wigan are playing the same system. Wigan are more direct, leaving their wingers high up to pressure and having strong central midfielders in the centre to break up play and play the ball forward quickly.

This could be a thrashing by Arsenal if they are afforded the space but the key is how we defend on the counter.

  90. Naga Gunner,

If that’s a good article I’m going to start reading the Monkey Arse Times, written by spurs supporting monkey in the London zoo.

  91. Does anyone know the newspaper article on Thursday which alluded to Song’s positional failings?

I would like to know how they interpret it as I’m sure they’re going to look at it individually and blame Song outright. Thanks.

  92. For tomorrow I’d go for:

    Bendtner RVP

    Rosicky Diaby Eboue

    Cesc Song

    Clichy Vermaelen Gallas Sagna

    Mannone

Bench: Eduardo, Ramsey, Wilshere, Checheckznee, Silvestre, Traore, Merida

    Arsene would probably select:

    Rosicky RVP Bendtner

    Diaby Song Cesc

    Gibbs Vermaelen Gallas Sagna

    Mannone

Bench: Eduardo, Clichy, Eboue, Xchexhekzknee, Silvestre, Ramsey, Merida

  93. The Brain,

I have no idea but I suspect it’s David Pleat.

  94. Nik – 3 in 3 games?

Without being pedantic, not for Arsenal he hasn’t.

I like Bendtner, but he is a forward, and should be playing up top.

If Rosicky is fit, he would be my choice on the right of a front 3.

  95. Ole gunner!

Yeah, I hope we do prove it wrong by the end of the season. Leave that…

Your team is about right. I just think song and ramsey should operate behind cesc. What do you say? ramsey instead of diaby?

My prediction: 3-1 to the arsenal

    Cheers!!

  96. Could we have a clean sheet just once?

  97. ‘Amazing…the obsession with Adebayor.’

I think Ade is the one obsessed and needs a break from the mic’s so he can get himself in order.

    Anyway, lets win tomorrow!!

  98. Ole,

I suppose that’s one way to solve the Nikki B or not Nikki B decision – field 12 players.

  99. Brain – Thanks for that insight into Martinez’s upbringing and football philosophy. I really doubt he is going to set-up his team to attack; it would be suicidal. Remember he is a young manger who after 4 games was already under pressure because he had Won-1 and Lost-3. The pressure has eased after the victory over Everton but Martinez strikes me as anything but ambitious.
Let us prepare for a hard battle.

  100. Bragging Rights Ltd

I hope we continue to “wilt under fierce pressure” like we did on Wednesday night, coming back from two goals down to win against a competitive European team in front of 40k of the noisiest fans I’ve heard in a while (way louder than the ones at the dreaded Celtic Park).

Come to think of it, we definitely didn’t wilt under pressure against ManU; there was no pressure. The fans were silent, and their attack was flat. We just self-destructed.

  101. Sorry my stats on Wigan were awful; 6 games played in the PL with 2-Wins, 4-Losses. Still maintain my position; this team will be conservative and seek to counter-attack on the break especially down the left flank where everyone and his dog has concluded we have a weakness.

  102. shotta-gunna; The flip side is he’s a young manager who wants to prove something. He’s actually quoted he’s not going to deviate from his plans and if that’s the case, it should prove a good match.

  103. If that tactics board refrerred to in the BBC article is by David Pleat then it needs to be filed right between shit and syphilis.

It certainly wouldn’t do this team any harm to get better at coming back from one or two goals down to win maches. What a better confidence builder when times are tough.

I’m tired with this Arsenal soft underbelly nonsense the media keep regurgitating.

Liverpool have a soft underbelly. Denilson and Song are far better than Lucas Leiva and Mascherano. Phucking punks.

  104. Now let’s not go overboard. Lucas and Mashcerano are fine players in their own rights and I don’t think you can say they are worse than out two. Song and Denilson still have much to learn, as do the Liverpool duo but one would argue they have a greater allround play. Actually Lucas has kopped some flack from the Kop but is as underatted as Denilson.

A partnership of Denilson and Diaby seems to have it’s merits in theory (I like Song, don’t get me wrong). Arguably they would give better passing ability while I feel the use of a tackler is better off a bit higher in Diaby while lower down, greater reading is needed. Also Diaby is good at arriving late and has good drive but needs to work on his decision making.

  105. Arsene is to be respected for rising above what the media wanted, i.e. lighting the fire of controversies to sell their news. I’m referring to this:

…when pressed on the latest developments ahead of the Premier League clash against Wigan at the Emirates Stadium, the Arsenal manager refused to be drawn on the issue any more.

”We have to put that behind us now and focus on what is in front of us,” said Wenger. ”Personally I believe what is very important for us is to focus on tomorrow’s game and forget all that happened last weekend.

”Adebayor plays for Man City, he does not play for Arsenal anymore and I am here to speak about the players who play for our club and not those who do not anymore.

”I believe that what is important is what is good for the club: what is good for Arsenal is that we win football games so let us focus on that.”

  106. We kept a clean sheet 2 nights ago… for the last 85 mins of the match.

Don’t belilttle that effort. We won’t have won the game if we hadn’t kept the “clean sheet”. :D

  107. Brain – I see your point of view but am not convinced. Maybe it is that part of me that says take no team fror granted. Bitten once…and all that.

  108. i dont think arsen will play 433 tomorrow against wigan. if it were me ide play 442

    mannone

    sagna Gallas Vermarlen clichy

    eboue Fabrigas rosicky Diaby

    van persie
    edwardo

    excuse the speeling mistakes

  109. The Brain,

I agree that Lucas is a good player. I agree that mascherano is a good player as well.

Denilson played better than either of them last season, though Mascherano had an indifferent season.

I simply don’t have doubts about our midfield players anymore. The one I still have doubts about -a bit is Alex Song. On the other hand, he is not a worse player than Darren Fletcher who some people have suddenly decided is Vieira+Makelele.

  110. agree with the brain there but diabi and denilson will never be our first choice partnership imo and considering that i think how well they have done as having to fill in for injuries over the past eighteen month

  111. Hope everyone has a safe and happy weekend. come on you reds

  112. Bottom line is, it doesn’t matter how Wigan play, we should be beating them at home if we have any aspirations of winning the league.

  113. The Brain and Ole gunner.

I guess I should have phrased my thoughts as “Song and Denilson can hold their own if compared to Lucas and Mascherano”..as opposed to the latter pair being worse than our pair.

My point was to vent at the media who are hell bent on relentlessly pointing out our warts and all, while the same arguements could be applied to other comparable teams. Selective amnesia is perhaps a good way of describing their collective bias against Arsenal.

My sense is that we will get better at this new system of play as the season progresses and we get the games in and the players get used to the system. One characteristic of the fluid 4-3-3 system is that there is a high dependency on players who are good at keeping the ball and moving it around at pace. Failing to keep the ball has consequences as we are likely to suffer counter attacks that can be devastating if we’re playing a good team as our defense line is high up the pitch. Man City is a case in point. We just have to get better at holding and moving the ball when we have it, and pressing harder from the front when we don’t. The preferred option if we have to, is to lose the ball in the final third nearer the opponents goal giving us options to defend very far away from our goal. Both of these strategies need to be applied by all outfield players and not just one individual. Granted, individuals do make mistakes, but these will be cut out I’m sure as they get used to this new system of play.

Barcelona for example, are better at holding the ball and have had more mileage in pressing when they don’t, and that’s why they’re better at it. For all the galactico superstars that Real Madrid have, their defending is suspect at best and criminal at worst. They just have the players up front who can make up for the defensive frailties by scoring more goals than they let in.

  114. This time tomorrow we’d have played Wigan. If victorious the media will chalk it up to our passing and movement, if not victorious it’d be because we don’t have Darren Fletcher, more proof that we are physically weak and buckle under pressure.

    Media nonsense is constant.

  115. Ole gunner. If we win emphatically, it wil be because Wigan didn’t turn up and we didn’t have any decent opposition.

It will never be portrayed as Arsenal being a superior team. You only have to look at the excuses given for the failings of Everton, Pompey and Celtic. Apparently, none of those wins are attributable to Arsenal’s imperious play. Those wins were supposedly due to the fact that the opposition were crap.

  116. DS and OG – The difference between us and Man U currently is not one of talent; arguably we have a more talented team/squad. IMO they are more experienced and mentally tested. Over the last three years in particular, ManU has proven that they can consistently overcome so-called lesser teams. Not that they haven’t suffered setbacks, being o-1 down oftentimes, but they play with belief they go about winning these games. Of course it helps that they had Ronaldo as their get out of jail card. I think Ferguson wants to instill the same in Rooney. Hopefully this mentality will build and become second nature to our big-time players.

  117. I wonder what the Scottish FA will have done to Israel after Celtic losing last night?

  118. shotta-gunna – Your right about Ronaldo as ManU’s get out of jail card and Rooney being the successor to this. The question I have is if Rooney can do this why play him on the wing so much last season? The answer is ManU did not have a player with the quality and energy to do the job. They have replaced Ronaldo with Valencia but still have no left winger, if Nani wasn’t good enough last season whats changed and if a 35 year old Giggs couldn’t do the job I can’t see a 36 year old Giggs doing it now.

  119. Shotta.

You make a very valid point. Like with anything in life, experience makes you better. A youth development project will always suffer as the team grows and gains this experience together. Unfortunately, patience is no longer a bankable virtue in the glory hunting era of 21st century football.

I feel so excited about the future of this team considering that its nucleas have been playing together for a while and they will only get better. They’re only at an average age of 21-23, it’s scary to think how good this team will be as they continue now and in the future when they average 26-28 years and beyond. Even more scary is the quality that’s following them from the youth ranks, and I’m sure the team will be added to just as Arshavin, Nasri, Vermaelen, etc have come in.

I’ve said before, this is the reason I feel that Gallas, Rosicky and Arshavin have a critical role to play in this team. They’re the most experienced players in the core areas of defense, midfield and attack, and the latter two have frequently captained their national team. They are the players who can grab games by the scruff of the neck and bitch slap us into a victory when we’re down. We saw how important Gallas was at the tail end of last season when we desperately missed him. We saw how effective Rosicky was on Wednesday when he was easily MOTM while he was on the pitch. We saw Arshavin single handedly humiliate the Liverpool defense with his devastating attacks.

We haven’t been able to get these 3 players on a run that will give the team momentum and its inevitable that the players around them like Vermaelen, Cesc, Eduardo, RVP etc will only shine from the confidence around.

  120. shotta-gunna

great post about man utd and experience. They would have draw or won that game at Eastlands last week.Too many times over the last two seasons we have turned winning leads into defeat because of our lack of experience.
Its no good having better players if those better players cant close out a game. You cant beat experience. That is why i would have bought in PV4

  121. OG

We will beat wigan tomorrow and quite easily but it wont prove anything until we beat another top 4 team.If we cant beat a poor Wigan side we dont deserve to finish top 4

  122. Experience, you cant get it without experience.

I do hope as Darius says, that the elder players will step up and lead the line. I would actually put RVP in the class as one of those leaders, there is just something very commendable about the way he carries himself and plays the game. He is a player who with a sec of brilliance can change a game also. I love this guy, for me the best player for Arsenal so far.

RVP is gonna tear the PL apart this season, I just have that feeling!

  123. random person has an opinion

I dont understand why we are after a striker. I personally feel that we are stocked in that department.

RVP will be the main player there, followed by eduardo and nick. I do not believe we need a tall pole of a striker up front and even if we did nick would be good at it.

even for the future i believe we have plenty of striking options from the young gunners.

and wenger would of course wouldn’t buy the chamak guy to put him on the bench where its already crowded.

If any one does get why we need a striker please do expalin to me

  124. Yogi – listened to you on Arseblog… you’re a scary bastard!
It’s in the sound just behind the voice….

  125. Explain, Ponyboy.

I think YW is a teacher. He certainly likes to put on the airs of a school master.

  126. Would explain the book club.

  127. Pb/Pz

A little bit of both – it is the bloggers job to educate and well, 6’4 tall, 6’4 wide, nature made me a scary looking bugger…

    YW

  128. I have not listened to the Arsecast for ages, but I decided to check it out since you were on it Yogi – you were very eloquent just as you are with the written word.

  129. Just listened to the cast YW…very nice man. You should do more of these.

  131. YW.

At 6ft 4 square, maybe you’re the almighty centre half that them folk keep calling for to save the Arsenal defense. How were your playing days?…LOL

I agree that you sounded like a teacher in the podcast. You have that authority. It was good to put a voice to the man behind ACLF.
