Guest Post: The Establishment’s Anti-Arsenal Bias Is A Blessing In Disguise

Darius from Stone Cold Arsenal has a thing or two to get off his chest:

The last week has been a revelation for Arsenal fans, the ugly side of football baring its teeth. Conventional wisdom suggests that you should never under-estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers. The media and the football establishment have succeeded in justifying this theory.

It’s easy to understand how quickly paranoia sets into our psyches. There is a misguided belief that not having won anything since 2005, the club is in turmoil. The detrimental fuel in all of this is the constant demand that the only measure of success is trophies. Equally foolish is the notion that if you don’t buy success, you have failed because galacticos on the team sheet is the only answer. The media is behind this paranoia. It has driven agendas from time immemorial, the last bastion of imperialism.

Hollow statements like “if they don’t buy, they won’t challenge” or “if they buy that club, is there money to invest in new players” are commonplace, sad indicators of how finance has infiltrated football to the point of sheer stupidity. It has a place in football but the tail started wagging this dog a long time ago.

The media attachment to big name players is more than a fashion statement in the current economic environment. Football doesn’t operate in a vacuum and it’s sad to see hacks and pundits relentlessly proclaiming they know what is best, fighting against commonsense. They wield unprecedented power, the media spinning into frenzy over their every misguided word.

Fans face difficult choices about spending their hard-earned money. Many can no longer afford tickets, subscriptions to Sky or merchandise. Yet this eludes pundits, continually peddling an unsustainable model based on huge debts and irresponsible management. Clubs are struggling with their financial demons; Arsenal are different to a certain extent. The decision to build a new stadium totally changed our options, needing difficult choices to be made about managing the club in the short to medium term.

Removing emotion quickly highlights a few facts. Paying for the stadium affects our ability to invest in the squad on the same scale as other clubs. This left Arsene with two options. Firstly, build a squad based on products of the Youth Academy that can challenge at the highest level. Secondly, it must be a unit that delivers scintillating football with panache, causing involuntarily shakes of the head in wonderment and admiration: Wengerball. This project is still fraught with significant challenges.

The key reason that the board and fans alike have confidence is Wenger, perhaps the only manager capable of delivering a sustainable club; a competitive and powerful team that can dominate world football for years to come, negating the need to go out and “buy” success. Even so, these things take time, testing the patience and sanity of every warm-blooded football fan.

These factors provided the media with enough ammunition to use against the club. It still doesn’t explain why there is such a continual negative sentiment. I don’t claim to have the answers but will indulge in speculation as to why this is so.

Throughout Wenger’s reign, Arsenal has been seen as “not English enough”, despite having more English players in our squad than Liverpool. We are the whipping boy for the Establishment and media, which manifests itself in contempt and arrogance. Pundits have an air of disdain so powerful that it is impossible to hide.

The media has ruthlessly exploited the lack of success by their definition. The saddest and most disappointing aspect of this is the fans who believe their hyperbole is gospel, taking on the mantle of beating their own team without a true understanding and appreciation of the journey being undertaken.

Commendably, most fans have kept faith in Wenger’s vision, being strong during barren times. Over the last 4 years, there have been moments where the team has not shrouded themselves in glory, an inevitable part of their growth that we should accept and embrace. We have all seen Arsenal games to forget. These are opportunities to highlight improvement, to make the team better.

I admit to frustration, anger and outright sadness at lost games. I’d be worried if I didn’t feel this way because of the passion and emotion I have for the team. When we eventually win something, I’ll still be an emotional wreck but the happiest kind.

I’ve always believed in perspective and in this project. I’ve had doubts about how much support Wenger has been getting from the board. He is one of the best managers in the world but cannot walk on water. At times, they could have done better in taking the heat off him. He has done a remarkable job fighting against the tide of adversity, fighting against the vision that you cannot manage your club within your means. And he is absolutely right.

Inevitably some fans are disillusioned. Measuring success only in terms of trophies has created the illusion of absolute failure at Arsenal. The blogs and media are full of “Wenger has lost the plot” brigades, proclaiming that it’s now or never. Such sweeping statements create unnecessary pressure whilst ignoring the reality facing Arsenal.

Nobody said it would be easy or that mistakes were not going to be made. The tactical ones were totally avoidable. Many times I’ve contemplated throwing the TV out of the window or storming the Emirates home dressing room because of what I’ve seen on the pitch. Expressing disappointment is OK. It’s a natural emotion because I love the club and I’m passionate about what we stand for.

More importantly, no disappointment has ever stopped me from wholeheartedly supporting the 11 players on the pitch. Human nature is such that we are often blinded by our struggles in life, making it hard for us to recognise what success looks like any more.

A case in point is this season. A section of Arsenal supporters are busy trying to justify and support the squad with its future. Others, significant in number and fed up with waiting for trophies, want success now even if it means throwing the baby, the bath water and the entire bathroom down Holloway Road. The rest hope in blind faith that things will work out soon, believing that “Arsene knows” yet frustrated at having to face friends and colleagues when Arsenal fail.

Despite this, the team is quietly going about its business, maturing, playing with the togetherness and determination you would expect from champions-elect. Unsurprisingly, it will take time for this to be noticed. No question that there is a significant change of character, determination and team spirit in the squad. Their quality and skill has never been in question. It was only a matter of time before they stood up to be counted.

UEFA’s kangaroo court and the raw deal at Old Trafford should act as a reminder to the players of what it will take to be champions. There is more to it than goodwill. They will have to wrestle and grab that mantle from the holders because no one is going to give up the title without a fight.

The odds are totally stacked against them. To prevail, they will have to do more than in previous seasons. Most affected by what is said about Arsenal, they know that this is their opportunity, their time has come. I’m confident simply through seeing the change in how we play as a team on and off the ball, seeing their self-belief. There is a grit and determination that was not been there before. This team is playing with a desire to be champions.

The last week or so can only give them more fire to continue doing so. Do we all realise what is developing in front of our eyes, realise that success is nigh? They are on the brink of sustained success. The least that they’ve earned is the right to be supported absolutely in finishing the job. It’s time for supporters to fall in line, do their part to make sure this team gets there.

The former CEO of a now infamous company was once asked by Wall Street analysts to clarify what he meant by proclaiming that his company will be the biggest and the most powerful in the world. His answer was as breathtaking as it was cynical. “It’s like pornography; you’ll know it when you see it.” I believe we’re seeing the arrival of this Arsenal team.

  1. Good Article Darius

“They will have to wrestle and grab that mantle from the holders because no one is going to give up the title without a fight.”

Unfortunately, it has not been a fair fight. It’s one thing to fight 11 against 11 and another to fight against the ref, the FA, the Media, then injuries and bad luck.

But, there is no life without hope…and inevitably it will happen against all odds.

  2. Applause, Applause

    Brilliant article…very well-made points.

    I completely agree of course.

  3. Good work mate, nice read.

  4. P'TangYangKipperBang

Thats a really good article mate Nice 1

  5. Nice Article. The problem with most people, as I understand it, is that they need to simplify things to make sense of it.

So Trophy = Success is simple enough.

Fighting on all fronts + playing the most beautiful game + maintaining a sensible business model + adhering to principles+ blooding youngsters (capello’s recent comments are heart warming) = confusion in the minds of most media people and fans.

The moment we oversimplify things the context is lost. In turn, whatever conclusions we draw are rendered meaningless (only we don’t realize that). On the face of it “Eduardo dived so punish him and make an example” makes sense. But its not as simple as that is it. It can never be.

One of the reasons why I support Arsene Wenger is his mastery over various interwoven and complex issues and his ability to get very good results on most fronts. He makes mistakes but I really don’t know anyone better.

  6. Yet another deluded post

  7. Excellent Darius- I think I love you!!

  8. you only write this rallying crap to take the attention away from the midiocre team we have now got, deep down you know we will fail again this season because the team simply is not good enough and thats the bottom line

  9. I just hope every gooner read this pice of brilliance… I really do..

  10. “Innit” weird to see opposite contrasts in the space of half an hour..One person works hard to write a beautiful article and the other one takes a few seconds to write a scrappy note trying to pull it down?

“Innit” the same exactly like what Wenger is trying to do…build and build the beautiful thing over the years…and then a stupid, useless, and uneducated pundit try to pull it all down in one day?

  11. Lovely observation Gunner4Ever. Destroying something is easy and doesn’t take too much time, effort or talent.

I have always wondered about the pundits. Why don’t they take up management and build something first? Then they would have all the right to pass judgments.

BTW has anyone heard Arsene Wenger as a commentator? Would love to know how he speaks. Too bad I don’t understand French.

  12. I mean does AW constantly criticize people, make sensational remarks and pretend that he knows better. I don’t think he is capable of that but would like to know from someone who has heard his talk as a TV pundit.

  13. Good article, as I keep saying to anyone that will listen, I am a Gooner for life, not just the next couple of years. Wenger is building a dynasty that will be challenging for honours for the next decade.
Oh and Jay Z I think it is you who is deluded.
Stick to rapping and shagging Beyonce mate.

  14. desigunner,

I heard Arsene commentate a couple of times. But he was there for the additional insight. And now you mention it, he wasn’t overly critical. Instead he tended to describe what the players were doing right or what the entire team had to focus on. He did mention who was having a quiet game-one of which Backy Sagna, and who had been decisive , a word he used a lot.

  15. no it’s the people like you who are angel goon

  16. Thanks Ole. I think all the knowledgeable people would take that approach i.e. talk as students of the game, discussing observations, etc.

Most pundits tend to take the position of passing a verdict, often without even looking closely.

  17. “you only write this rallying crap to take the attention away from the midiocre team we have now got, deep down you know we will fail again this season because the team simply is not good enough and thats the bottom line”

And he thinks he is a supporter?

  18. Good piece, Darius.

  19. If you’d had the misfortune to hear the last three Jay-Z records you wouldn’t be telling him to go back to rapping.

  20. clichydoubledeuce

    great post.

  21. YW

good piece but i already know this things.but peolpe who dont know its a good news to them.but we still lack depth in DM which wenger hasnt done something about.

  22. Nice article Darius

“Removing emotion quickly highlights a few facts”
Good to see someone approach our situation with a bit of perspective.
I’ve always maintained that it’s healthy to level some criticism (if one needs to vent frustration) at the team, provided it’s not detrimental to the development/future success of the squad.
What we often get from some ‘supporters’ is much more damaging and often masked as ‘criticism’.

“With greater power comes greater resposibility”
More Arsenal BLOGGERS need to step up and help create an air of POSITIVITY around this young and talented squad.

    @ Guuner4Ever (12:29 am)
It’s not been a fair fight; All the more reason for SUPPORTERS to rise and be counted.

  23. YW

good piece but i was already aware of this artitle before i was reading it.but good news to people who dont know it.

  24. @ jay z

I’m more convinced than ever that you’re either a Spurs, Man U or Chelsea supporter.
…or maybe you’re a tabloid media sympathiser, sharing similar vested interests.

  25. Brilliant. This should be circulated among all Gooners on the official website.

  26. Riley8;

the only way you could be aware of this article before you read it would be if you wrote it.

  27. i take exception to what jay-z said!this is one of the most neutral and incisive articles written by an arsenal fan!keep it up bro.

  28. Darius

Excellent article , lets rally around the team. We are already fighting against the odds and the FA,UEFA, media etc. We ,who are fans of The Arsenal need to stick together get behind the club and the players. And to hell with the rest of the unmentionables out there!! We will prevail!!!

No Fear!!! We Are The Arsenal!!!!

  29. jay-z

Go and take a long walk in a short pier.

  30. great article.
ask any fan of any other team would they take
wenger as manager and the answer is invariably yes. even a spud fan. AW is a visionary and quite probably a genius and like all visionaries he is mocked, vilified and attacked by the dull, backward
and moronic of forces of the media and society..take it as a sign of his class..
    proud to be a gunner

  31. I respect Wenger because he is a principled gentleman, articulate in English, humble, fiercely loyal and totally committed to ArsenalFC. His comments are mainly fair, and it is the distortion of the media who tried to sensationalise his quotes. One example of which is the “anti-football” comment which had been turned into an attack on Man Utd, and an attack on a Man Utd player. While he was critical, he was never intending to attack either targets. Rather, he was talking about what ails the game, and anti-football tactics being one of the more obvious one.

  32. Dupsffokcuf

i dont have to write it casuse my job is not destined to be writer.

  33. Darius,

Thank you for sharing your broad perspective.

  34. You say the answer is not to buy.—The thing is when we buy players, they usually do really well— And we didn’t pay a huge bundle of cash for them either-

    Vermaelan, 12m Arshavin 17m and Nasri. 12m
    Lescott 20m Diego 25m Xabi 35m

the players we bought are better and cheaper.

So the answer is yes we need to buy-

Henry/Pires were all ready well established footballers before wenger showed them the light.

we need to buy experienced players with HEART and a WINNING attitude. No one has that in our team, we don’t go out there to play to win like Man or Chealsea- we go out there to play good football- despite winning or losing. But we need to win.

The answer is a combination of bought players and homegrown talent.

And also the fans don’t care if Arsenal are financially stable we just want to win.

  35. Funny. I was thinking that Darius Stone is good enough to host his own blog, and then before I knew it, he has become a guest writer for ACLF. Good talent spotting, YW. And good post, Darius.

  36. kurt

AW success at the transfer market is mostly due to the fact that he is very very selective. IF he had signed players as often as likes Spuds or Pool, there will be more failures. AW of course is not perfect Jeffers, Cygan and Stepanovs comes to mind but his success rate is so far much better than most other EPL managers and mostly never anything over 20 million pounds.

kurt , fans should care about the financial stability of the team they support. Look at Newcastle, Luton and Leeds and think again.

No Fear!!! We Are The Arsenal !!!

  37. Good article. You raise many good points.. and i totally see your analysis loud and clear..

why is everyone hating @jay z.. he also has a point, as do another couple of comments that state we just dont have the squad.

I love Wenger. I totally support him and his capabilities. But he has to realize that as kids, you can not expect too much from them. completeing a top 4 finish is an accomplishment in its self with such a young and in experienced squad.

There was a reason that Arsene was going after players such as Melo and Chamakh. They have some experience and can help provide a backbone to a team like Arsenal. It is a fact that we are lacking experience and some grit/steel in the squad.

I agree that our starting 11 is as good as any other in Europe, let alone the league, but we are lacking depth in the right spots, mainly DM.

It is a fact that when we see our players play they shine, only and only when they are in their optimal positions. Arsene tries to use players in various roles. Though they may be competent in those roles, there ability may not be as good as when they are in their natural positions.

Rotating/shifting players is a sign that there seems to be a lack in the depth of the squad, and though Arsene tried to address the problems, he came up short with either his stinginess, or his lack of funds. One will never know.

Arsene knows what he needs, and he might not have bought in the players that he wanted yet, but the starting 11 is bar none a Top team. Bringing in players- the like of Arshavin shows that quality can be bought, but Arsene spent sooo long working out this deal that he had to pinch every penny possible.

I believe we have a great squad, but come Jan/Feb, when we will lose a couple of players to ACN, and when most likely a couple of key players will be injured (this is just from past experiences), we will fall short and will drop back in the race.

I hope we can mount a great start and get results in our opening 10-15 fixtures-this will show where we truly stand amongst the rest, and will give us a better judgment of our team. It seems that we may run out of gas come clutch time, but I am certain within the next 2 years this team will become the Best team in EUrope, as long as we don’t keep on dishing out our stars to other clubs, and as long as we can add 1 or 2 quality players, to add some more depth, over this time period, we WILL be successful .

    UP the ARSE!!!

  38. @ Kurt: You say the fans don’t care if Arsenal is financially stable. I wonder which “fans” you’re talking about there man. Because I know I do care!

The move to the Emirates was always going to constrict our buying ability in the short term while anchoring our future prospects on what is easily the best stadium in London. Anyone who goes into supporting a football club without a long-term plan is like a man who gets married but plans to divorce his wife once she turns 50 so he can go get a younger model!

I want to win, I want us to win so I can personally shove it down the throats of idiots like Myles Palmer who uses his so-called “Arsenal News Review” to constantly attack our team and our manager. His “review” of our win against Pompey was simply the worst, most asinine piece of gutter trash web journalism it has ever been my displeasure to read.

It breaks my heart to see our own fans refusing to support their team because their view of success has been warped by the media and the assorted hacks who have shown time and time again that they hate Wenger, and they hate his Arsenal team because they’re terrified that when he starts winning again, they’ll be shown up for the barren-brained morons that they truly are, and so they constantly attack him and do their absolute best to undermine the confidence of the supporters in him, and sadly, it’s worked on some.

There are those who say they paid good money to watch Arsenal, so they can boo if they’re unhappy. If that’s your attitude, then your money is better spent on the WWE where the performers are expecting to be booed! When you boo your own players, you’re destroying your own club, and it’s astonishing that so many of the boo boys don’t see that.

In my country the CEOs of 5 major financially institutions were recently removed by the Central Bank because of financial recklessness which had brought their institutions to the brink of collapse. They were outwardly successful, but on the inside, things were absolutely rotten, and the authorities were forced to act to preserve the funds of depositors.

I prefer to have a financially stable club that I can take my kids to see in a few years, than to live in terror that years of reckless behaviour will terminate the life of my club. Afterall, before the Leeds scenario occured, everyone thought it was impossible, and now everyone worries about their club “doing a Leeds”!

  39. Arsenal have decided to appeal the Eduardo decision and Eduardo himself might face the Kangoroos himself, some gooners were very critical of the club to do this but it in my opinion its a good thing, Eufa decided to pick on Eduardo and I read in the same gutter press that hung Eduardo to dry that Eufa are uneasy about the whole thing because they can’t follow it with same punishments to others. Once the champios league and europa cup kicks off they will have a pile of DVDs outside their doors to investigate. well I would say its good for the club to make as much noise about it and not disapear quietly. They’ve been warned not to open this can of worms. Now it has been open let them face up to it.

  40. Awful warbling article

  41. great post.

  42. Kurt says “And also the fans don’t care if Arsenal are financially stable we just want to win”. Speak for yourself, mate. I’ve supported Arsenal for nearly 40 years and would like to still be supporting them in 40 years time if I’m lucky enough to live that long. I’m prepared to put up with some barren seasons for long-term gain — after all, I supported the club through the 70s and 80s when we not only won very little but ere often dull to watch.

Most of the supporters like Luke and Jay Z are either young and recent fans, who have only known success, or glory hunters who latched on to us during our undefeated season. Or they’re Spuds. Either way, they’re not proper fans.

  43. the law

you simply dont know what you are talking about.and let me tell you fans only care about winning not the financial stable.and wwe is fake not real.lets take matt hardy for example cause he was the bad and know he is the good guy.and this always happen in wresling cause its shit, fake, fixed.

  44. Another angle of Eduardo’s alleged diving –

  45. random person has an opinion

I fail to understand why most of the mainstream media and “pundits” so passionately hate Arsenal. How can such a huge conspiracy be undertaken with such widespread collaboration?

At first I assumed that it was just a paranoid delusion of the Arsenal fans. But, now after reading many of the news paper articles and their blogs I can’t help but support the conspiracy theory. As there is no other rational explanation.

I may not fully grasp the reasons for such a widespread hatred against Arsenal, as I am not from England. But I have been convinced that there is indeed such a shared feeling in the media.

  46. this is the worst most worble article ever.and darius stone you simply not ready or good enough to write your own blog.

  47. @1LC

“Once the champions league and europa cup kicks off they will have a pile of DVDs outside their doors to investigate”

Nope, it won’t happen because UEFA made it clear that “UEFA DIVING CLAMPDOWN ENDS WITH EDUARDO”.

    http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8652_5535065,00.html

  48. Darius,

Great article, I just wish more of our fans were patient enough to read it and thoughtful enough to understand it. Also, I am heartened that most of the commentators above are true Arsenal supporters and not transitory fans who, in time, will move on to the next fad or popular pursuit.

  49. “Innit” weird to see opposite contrasts in the space of half an hour..One person works hard to write a beautiful article and the other one takes a few seconds to write a scrappy note trying to pull it down?

So true. It’s a wonder how some people choose to cope with their own inabilities.

The other truth is I’ll leave Arsenal if Wenger leaves before he really wants to, no matter how hard that would be. Probably it’s true that no one should be ‘greater’ than the club, but I’m just 24, the first time I fell for Arsenal and be a very young supporter he was already there, the man behind the special, wonderful ‘orangy’ team. I’m not going to leave him behind.

How many times must he say that he COULD buy beyond our means, get the glory for a short time then leave the club in such glory to crash and burn at the hand of other managers before some ‘fans’ get it? And no, he’s no angel. I believe he’s doing good things for Arsenal because it’s his passion and we will be his legacy in life. But still what he’s doing is good for us.

I want to talk reasonably but sometime all I want to do is to stomp my feet and wail ‘don’t put too much pressure on our club!’.

If you for a minute think that the boos and the empty seats at the Emirates before the game ends don’t really matter in the broad picture, think again. When the players and the team don’t play as good as they can after getting boos and harsh criticisms from their own supporters over and over again it doesn’t mean they’re weak or bad. It means they’re human and footballers. They do need the support.

  50. Stuart

May I ask what prompted this statement, and what is your basis? “Most of the supporters like Luke and Jay Z are either young and recent fans, who have only known success, or glory hunters who latched on to us during our undefeated season. Or they’re Spuds. Either way, they’re not proper fans.”

  51. Thanks all for the feedback about the article. Let’s stay positive and do our part of this job, the team will do their’s. Everyone has a role to play to ensure Arsenal becomes the most successful club and remains so in years to come.

Incidentally, most names with footballing clout, including Capello and Guus Hidink, have not hesitated to point out that to be successful in the long term, teams need to follow the Arsenal model of growth and development – with our academy and training regime being touted as first class.

@Riley, Jz and the doom mongers. It’s OK, you’re entitled to your opinions, but like with the media hacks and pundits who are anti-Arsenal, communicating and debating issues with you based on the mind set you have adopted is as fruitless as playing a guitar to a goat.

@Luke. I do have a personal blog, and I also occasionally write an additional Arsenal blog when time permits (the link on my name will take you to my Arsenal blog.

  52. WHO REMEMBERS THE BORING BORING ARSENAL DAYS?

Am a very happy fan; looking back from where arsenal has come from. Arsene spoilt us the fans and now he is being crucified for not satisfying our fantasies…..

i tell you there is alot to be happy about supporting arsenal footbal club and the trophy will come…

  53. Troll identified:

    *Rile-it*

    Don’t feed the troll.

  54. Darius. Thanks. Interesting blog. Will read when I’m free to do so.

By the way, this phrase that you used in the above post seems to have a distinct ethnic flavour to it “playing a guitar to a goat”. Am I right?

  55. Good point @3:43 Luke.

  56. Great article.

The best I have read in sometime – and refreshing after so many negative comments you read.

  57. Good article bro… covers all aspects..

Yogi has some serious cometition.. :)

  58. *competition..

  59. The question is can Arsenal shake off the negativity and focus on winning? We tend to spiral out of control when we feel the world is against us.

  60. Inspired writing Darius. Its typical that the one celled brains amongst us have already been infected with this notion of buying success at all costs and lack of concern for the financial ruin of a club or Wengers genius and foresight.Believe me it wont be long till a big club are starring down the barrel of administration from over ambitious wanton player recruitment beyond their means. Its not only houses that can be repossessed. One Arsenal Minus the twats!

  61. Its anice writting. But, most of the fans are just scared of man city the likes spurs.

so i dont think all gooners will apprecite arsenal finishing in the 6 position, i bet that.

And may be the language being used is so hash.

    Good day gooners.

  62. Fabulous article Darius. Not one word out of place and an echo of mine and I suspect many others’ thoughts.
What we have been watching the last few seasons may not represent the pinnacle of success but it is so far removed from failure that to mention the word in association with our great club is laughable folly.

  63. Brilliant article, thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Makes a change to read something other than the all-too-familiar chest-beating about trophies. Given the financial constraints on the club in recent seasons, we’ve done well to achieve what we have and have built a good foundation for future success. If it wasn’t for Wenger we’d have finished lower than fourth in recent seasons.

  64. Arsene lives our dream too, most of us would give our all, to have trodden the road his young men tread regardless of the wealth that goes with it.

Just to play for the Arsenal was the dream for ourselves, and then our sons and grandsons etc.

To think that anyone would act so irresponsibly, so as to damage our great club is to the majority of the arsenal family an anathema, a crime beyond belief.

So well said Darius, let us bask in what we have, and enjoy the sheer beauty of Wengerball, secure in the knowledge that not only will our time come again soon, but AFC will survive and stay at the top long after these trophy buyers have left for the country from which they briefly came.

  65. Come on guys, its a load of crap

  66. @Luke 7:17 am – LOL. You’re so right about that phrase. Guitars and goats don’t really cut it.

@Sydney Gooner and chkmiaot, thanks for the feedback.

@Osaslog. The fans have a vital role in helping the team shake off the negativity and to maintain a winning mentality. The team is already doing their part, and fans need to do theirs and the team will respond.

@GFL and Mark Adams. Some fans do not realise how lucky we are. Listen to the screams about the fact that Wenger made 40 mil from selling Ade and Toure, and that he’s refusing to spend. Firstly, who are these players out there that they mean, they don’t grow on trees. Vermaelen is an exception, and Wenger got him very early in the season after studying him over 44 times in a period of 2 years since we played Ajax at the Amsterdam cup. That’s how long it took him to get the Verminator and who doubts the results. Besides, no one is thinking of how Wenger paid for Arshavin and Verminator, and where extended contracts and wages are coming from. Buying is fine, but it has to be afordable and it has to be the right mix for the team. Promoting is also part of the game plan. Look at Wilshere and Marida. We couldn’t buy them out there if we tried, yet they are excellent squad players.

As for club finances, it’s only a matter of time before an EPL club goes to the wall. The administrators are camped outside West ham in the car park, and its only the creditors who own it holding them off hoping that a sugar daddy will bail the hammers out and pay them.

Manchester Utd and Liverpool are waking up to the reality that financial backers actually mean business when they say it’s our money and we want it back. Don’t think that they’d even hesitate calling in their loans and cashing in on the brand names if they thought they won’t get their money back.

@Steww…I hear you. Watching this team is like watching a child grow with you. Of course we could go out and buy a fully grown child, but then again, what’s to say that that is success.

  67. An excellent article Darius (if I may).

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I take on board those of Jay and the otheres who are disillusioned. To pick up on something someone else said: I’m in this for the long run, i’m not a fly-by-night supporter who is only here for the glory.

On another point: I just can’t accept that people think that booing our players is in any way productive. Can’t these people see the viscious circle that they are caught up in?

bad performance = booing = loss of confidence = worse performance = more booing and so it goes on . . .

People who think that this behaviour improves sporting displays know nothing about sports (or any form of) psychology. Get behind the team and then you will get the trophies that you so desperately desire.

I have been an Arsenel fan for as long as I can remeber (i’m 40 next year) and I have never spent any time booing the players (not even Gus Ceaser or Eddie McGoldrick!). In fact, if I hear someone shouting abuse at one of our players I have in the past stood up and shouted encouragement to that same player. I think more fans should do that. It would keep the doom mongers quiet.

  68. Darius, you have a talent for whining, and stating the blaringly obvious, well done

  69. Excellent article.

It has long been a gripe of mine that Wenger does not get (from the media & footballing world in general) the credit he deserves for building a squad whilst the club self sustains. It really is amazing.

Whilst other clubs splash stupid amounts of cash, out outlays are from the clubs turnover and profits. I hope the day comes where lots of clubs really sink into problems due to their overspending, whilst the good ship Arsenal continues to grow.

Has Wenger made mistakes?….., without doubt. His confidence in his players is often misplaced, but more often that not he gets it right. He is the right man for this club without question.

  70. Wenger had a point.

The problem is when you use words like ‘witchhunt’ and ‘disgrace’.

    That is inflammatory.

    Speaking of UEFA.

What do you think of the Europa League

  71. I love your article man, and I love you! We need more blogs and journalism like this not the negativists! Keep it up!

  72. The people who didn’t like the article have a point to make. They are concerned. But, I think that they would like to share only the joys with club and not the sorrows. How can these people be called genuine fans of the Arsenal?

  73. Rich,

You love him, yeah, yeah, yeah
You love him, yeah, yeah, yeah
With a love like this, you no that cant be bad,
With a love like this, you know you should be glad

  74. Thoroughly enjoy reading this blog each day.
Today’s words really struck a chord with me.
    Cmon you Gunners

  75. What a brilliant piece of work. About time someone spoke some sense around here. So we haven’t won since 2005; mainly due bad luck and bad reffering. God knows what people would be like if we went back to the bad olds days of the 1980s.

Keep the Faith. In Arsene we trust!!!

  76. One wonders, If poor tony knows there is a difference between the Goons and the Gooners.

He definitely belongs to the first LOL

  77. Darius,
    Great article. Well played.
To the assorted doom mongers. Ok, the article is crap, “innit”. Winning trophies is all that is important etc etc.
Now it’s your turn. Can you kindly explain exactly what you would do to improve things? Only rules are:
    1. You do not have an infinite pot of money.
    2. You cannot play Championship Manager and sell Senderos for £50m and buy Messi for 30 bob.
    The floor is yours.

  78. Goonerandy

Agree with your post at 9:08 am. Except that the first “often” should be replaced by “sometimes”. Both outcomes cannot be described as “often” as they would be considered contradictory. It is either he gets them wrong sometimes, but more often right, or he gets them wrong often, but sometimes right. Sorry for being pedantic.

“His confidence in his players is often misplaced, but more often that not he gets it right. “

  79. Jerome at work, Gadget at home

Excellent post Darius. A wonderful analysis with emotion tempered by logic.

One thing your post touches upon that intrigues me is what the players didn’t have last season. The implication is that it is self-belief, and to be honest, I dare not disagree. However, if it is self-belief, then surely this should do nothing more than stress to all fans how important it is that we encourage, support, & nuture our players.

With that said, Jay-Z you’re a bit of a fool really. I challenge you to state your reasoning as to why you think our players are mediocre, and then explain to me how that same bunch of players managed to dominate the reigning champions of the EPL?

Furthermore, it annoys me that you’ve adopted such a moniker, when Reasonable Doubt is one of my favourate albums

  80. Excellent article. Cuts to the very heart of what Wenger wants to achieve for this club. If you don’t already appreciate it, then read the recent interview he gave to Martin Samuel and Mat Syed. This is a man who’s passion for football verges on religious zeal and he’s bringing this to Arsenal. How lucky is that? How appreciative are some of the fans and most of the media?

It comes down to faith. Do you have faith in Arsene Wenger? Based on the past Henry, Viera, Anelka, Overmars.. Sate of the art training facilities, trophies and the Invincibles. Presently
he’s kept Arsenal in the top 4, whilst chained to a spanking new stadium. We play great football and the young team can only improve. Once the housing market picks up (1 or 2 yrs) the sale of all the flats should reduce our debt substantially (which was the original plan before you know what..). I have faith in him.

  81. Maybe Jay-Z is one of those who know the price of everything and the value of nothing… Our team assembled at reasonable cost is top notch even though we didn’t and couldn’t spend like Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid. Most who left Arsenal at their prime fetched huge transfer fees. Adebayor, Toure, Vieira, Henry, etc.

  82. Darius – superb, thank you for that…

  83. be patient guys come 2020 this team would win something

  84. Judge the team in 2 years Arsene says

  85. Suddenly the problem is not Chelsea’s uncrupulous approach to transfer dealings it’s recruiting teens.

Banning Chelsea for being dirty dealers is correct. But I am yet to see a convincing case for the notion that recruiting a youngster to your academy is wrong, morally or in any way.

Whichever you broach it, most of the kids at academies all over the world are not from the immediate neighbourhoods of the clubs.

As a parent I don’t see what is wrong with Barcelona offering my kid a crack at realising his talent and me and the kid’s parent deciding to move to Barcelona.

There is abssolutely nothing wrong with that in principle.

If my kid was already assigned to say Arsenal, then Barcelona would have to compensate Arsenal for the work they’d put into him.

If Barcelona encouraged the kid to break a contract by paying me money as Chelsea so often does, then that’s corrupt and wrong, and it’s a threat to the transfer system.

  86. Excellent article, Darius, keeping up this blog’s high standard and positive tone.

One thing that so often seems to have been overlooked is Wenger’s sound business sense in looking at the big picture.

He has money to spend but has to consider how much he spends each week/month/season, as well as the multi-million transfer fee.

Historically, the key criticism was that Arsenal did not pay its players enough to encourage them to stay. The club has been very quiet about the level of the extended deals agreed with RvP, Bendtner, Denilson, Fabregas, Walcott etc. and the cash flow each month is critical in maintaining the squad.

if inadequate funds are there to pay the players for their contribution each time their salary transfer comes round, we’ll lose more of these currently promising players who could be fully-fledged stars of tomorrow.

Man City, Chelsea and Real Madrid benefit from sources of wealth which are not as straightforward as Arsenal’s so can upset the market for players who have proven themselves. If such players are overvalued, any portfolio manager (for such is one of the roles of a football manager at a top club) would look to capitalise on such players, if their value on the market is greater than their value to the club (i.e. Adebayor and Toure at Arsenal).

Successful business is the basis of ongoing success and it gives me great pride to observe the skill of Arsenal’s board and Arsene himself for managing this so well.

I think it’s too hard for most sports journalists to understand but Arsenal’s financial stability is demonstrated each year in the Deloitte report and admired by those who do understand. If the FT reported on football…

  87. OG. Chelsea’s folly is that they “induced” the player (and/or parents) to break a contract.

Clubs bid for kids for their academies every day. However, most clubs talk to the training or parent clubs, and with the kids parents to come up with an arrangement that firstly, doesn’t break any contracts, and secondly, doesn’t disadvantage the training club who receive appropriate compensation.

Inducement suggests that some under hand tactics were used, and that is wrong.

The wider issue is a more difficult one though. Football is seen as a sure fire way to get out of poverty. Go to any grassroots set up in Africa for example, and kids are more interested in showcasing their skills for scouts as opposed to developing their game for their local setups.

Football has become a get out of jail card for many aspiring young players and their families, and as long as there’s money in the game at the scale we’re seeing now, there will always be an element of bribery and corruption.

An approach by any established club is never going to be turned down by families in a difficult situation for the sake of morality.

It happens to some extent in Europe, where some clubs will work on the basis that there’s a price for everything.

  88. Some sympathisers (including a fair minded Arsenal fan who is a friend of mine) say that the ban on transfers for 2 windows for Chelsea is harsh. I disagree. If the ban is only for the Jan 2010 window, it renders the punishment meaningless as not much transfer business is done in Jan. Therefore, the punishment is just right, and just enough to hurt. It is a fair punishment.

  89. Nice stuff Darius,

I believe the country`s dislike of us goes back to the 1930`s when we were the Man Poo of that era & we were later tagged with the `lucky` Arsenal label.

Our sides of the 1970`s 80`s & 90`s which were coached or managed by Don Howe or George Graham were never given any credit & labelled boring, functional etc so it`s hardly surprising that when AW produces teams that have played some of the best football ever seen in the UK the media like to pick up on other things, such as `cheating` , discipline or lack of English players.

We are Arsenal – no one likes us

    WE DON`T CARE

  90. An approach by any established club is never going to be turned down by families in a difficult situation for the sake of morality.

I think the family’s situation doesn’t matter. If my kid was outstanding at the age of 13 in violin, or mathematics or acting, I’d do anything to make sure he realised his potential. if that means moving to Lens or to Switzerland, I’d consider it.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. Many people I know have moved to other countries or other boroughs to get their children into better schools for example.

  91. Luke,

I also think the punishment is harsh but I can’t find any sympathy for Chelsea who only recently got Mutu fined for £14M.

  92. A fantastic article. Like the previous guest article, and yogi’s regular good stuff. This is all the more a reason for me to start my daily Arsenal blog reading at A Cultured Left Foot.

  93. Hi, just want to say that’s it’s a wonderful guest post by Darius. Been following ACLF for a few months now and it’s great to see fellow Gooners keeping the faith =)
I’ll rather we have a club to support in 30 years’ time than to have trophies now and watch the club fall apart (i.e. Leeds).
So all those haters who just want to see big names on the team sheet and lots of cash being splashed around, you can go check out the Eastlands or somewhere in sunny Spain.

dandan @ 9:52am : Couldn’t have said it better myself.

  94. OG

The punishment is not harsh, merely in line with FIFA’s recent stand on such matters. Whether the CAS will agree is another issue but they appear to be upholding punishments.

    YW

  95. @OG.

I do agree with you and any parent would seek the best for their children.

FIFA however, are focussing on the unfair consent issue – where inducement was a factor. If for example, all parties involved in the pursuit for the excellence of an individual child are happy with all arrangements e.g. loss of talent to one party like a school or a club, the stress of moving home or even country, etc, I don’t think it would be seen this harshly.

Chelsea weren’t helped by the fact that they have form for Ashley Cole and Obi Mikel, where the tactics used were pretty much under the table.

  96. OG

Agree with your second part though. “Chelsea who only recently got Mutu fined for £14M.” That fine would destroy Mutu.

  97. Unfortunately, “doing a Leeds” is also associated with an ex-Arsenal player who went for broke in trying to qualify Leeds for the Champions league final (they were at the semi-final hurdle) and in the process lost the battle for a champions league place for the following year.

We could very well have said “doing an O’Leary” instead.

  98. ArsenalArseneArshavin

The Arsenal are on the right path. Remember when we escaped from Old Trafford with only 1-0 in the Champions League.
And now remember this Saturday when we should at least have drawn the match. And remember Fabregas was not even playing and he is probably our best player. And remember we only lost because of 2 mistakes with 1 of them being a very very serious mistake.
I truly believe Arsenal will be champions. We are best equipped as Wenger said. No other team have players like Walcott, Rosicky, Nasri, Djorou, Vela and to some degree Eduardo to still come and help their teams.

    Keep the faith

  99. Hi Darius,

A clear 20/20 piece. However last season i was frustrated with Wenger, simply because of the backline in the most important game the emirates has hosted. Champions cup semi versus Utd. Whatever is said about planning for the future and the great work Wenger has done, it stil frustrates me when Wenger plays with such awful defenders! I really think if Silvestre had played LB and not CB that evening the result would have been different. In a lot of the big games we have had, Utd away a few years ago when we lost 6 – 1, Spurs 4-4, Liverpool 4-4, Chelsea 1-4 it has not been down to tactics or weak players going forward, it has been down to a really poor taste in defenders! Senderos, Stepanov, Grimandi, Silvestre, Cygan the list goes on!

However there is a cause for optimism, Vermaelen! As long as i never see a Stepanov or Silvestre lining up against Wayne Rooney again i will sleep easier!

  100. Now I am convinced Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen were created to drive me out of my wits.

  101. Mischa Weston-Green

Top article from an obvious believer in we are doing…I love the boys and the club and when I see them play and we are drawing or losing against mediocre teams, I am one of the fans who is still there giving them encouragement and positivity…those who have slammed this article above are the fans who start booing the team and give up.

    Long live the Arsenal!

    Misch

  102. Now that Chelsea have been punished for leading players away from their contract, does this mean that at last we can challenge the likes of barcalona and madrid when they incesentley and pro-activly try to lure fabby away from Arsenal, openly encouraging a player to terminate his contract. The player himself also getting a fine , or are we to discover (not for the first time) that continental teams get the rub of the green

  103. Boomer

I think the crucial thing with Chelsea is that the lad had a pre-professional contract with Lens. According to reports, Lens had about €3m in mind for a fee and Chelsea offered anywhere between €0.5m and €1m, depending upon whom you believe.

Incredibly, Lens claim to have documentary evidence of Chelsea’s inducements. Unless Cesc walks and signs a contract before a fee is agreed, nothing will happen to Barcelona since tapping up is all but impossible to prove.

    YW

  104. If we can get every one fit i cant really see us losing many games, for me having so many injuries last season was the only reason, yes the only reason we didnt win anything, we were good enough, we are not a team of kids who lack experience , that c an no longer be said, no imo it was injuries to key players during a difficult time of the season, if it wasnt for the hard work from the younger sqad we might not even had made 4th, our sqad is up there with the best in europe

  105. Great Article Darius,

I actually e-mailed it to my mate to articulate all the points I have been arguing with him about for ages!

He’s a firmly entrenched in the “we need to spend” “denilson/bendtner isn’t good enough” “Wenger’s lost it” frame of thinking.

    Misguided fool.

  106. I’ve seen journalists trying to compare the Coquelin and Merida episodes with this Kakuta thing.

In Coquelin’s case no compensation was due and Arsenal paid nevertheless, if I am not mistaken.

In Merida’s case it was his parents who chose to take him away from Barcelona. That’s why the penalty of £2M was directed at Fran himself which we’re paying for him.

  107. yw
so its to be left to the morals and standards of the club involved. while i agree with the way we conduct ourself in terms of transfer I have no choice in interpreting these constant views of these clubs as inducement by assossiation, but of course your right if it isnt documented formaly then how can it be shown as evidence, wishfull thinking on my part

  108. Is there any concrete way that fans can show their support for Eduardo online? It must be awful to hear himself be gleefully crucified by the same yammering idiots who kept praising the oaf who almost ripped his foot off his body.

Were I Eduardo, I would f*cking HATE England. Maybe enough to want to leave.

  109. old news i know but we are one of only two english SPORTING clubs in the top 10 rich list. not just football and in the whole world, of course thats how much we are worth and not what we have however i think its a good indicator as to the future

  110. Boomer –

No doubt some idiots will read that rich list as:
Arsene has unlimited transfer funds why wont he buy!

  111. Boomer

It would be quite easy, I think, for Barcelona to put a reasonable doubt in UEFA / FIFA’s mind that they have only responded to media questions regarding Fabregas.

It would be nigh on impossible to prove that they planted the questions in the first place…

    YW

  112. nolaboyd
i would like to send my support also, as for edwardo, this guy can take it on the chin , let me know if you find anything

  113. nolaboyd,

someone suggested that we should sing Eduardo’s name at our first CL match while the CL theme is playing at Ashburton Grove if the ban stands.

I think we should also vote Eduardo player of the month at Arsenal.com.

  114. Tony De Goon –

You’ve been to Croatia? I bet you’ve never left your inbred town.

  115. Tony De Goon –

You’ve been to Croatia? I bet you’ve never left your inbred town.

A bet I’ll be willing to make too.

  116. kinda bored of this whole are we good enough arguement now. fine in preseason but the transfer window is closed now so lets just, as bloody always, enjoy watching the team weave its magic.

no we are not perfect, but the bar has been raised by chelsea and subsiquently man u so high in the last 4 years that we should be frankly astonished that we do at least challenge every year.

major unsustainable investment has been the difference between us and the other 3 but platini IS going to clamp down on the quite blatantly unfair oil money and shakey loan injections by insuring clubs can only buy within their means. when this happens the true genius of how awesomely well run our club is will be all to see.

At the moment we are competing very well on a very uneven playing field, if things get straightened out we could be on top for years upon years.

its hardly our fault that other clubs have been allowed to sink into crazy levels of debt. the fact that chelsea started this all by saying ‘in ten years we might actually start making a small profit providing we are winning everything’ speaks volumes about the criminal lack of bollocks, foresight and determination held by the official bodies regulating football today.

i still kinda hate platini but if actually starts tackling the money=success issues we face today then it should benefit 90% of clubs quite fairly. theres little doubt that arsenal could fly to the very top pretty comfortably in a better regulated model as we are years ahead of most clubs in so many ways.

  117. Great article Darius, really wonderful stuff. Couldn’t agree more with this :

“I admit to frustration, anger and outright sadness at lost games. I’d be worried if I didn’t feel this way because of the passion and emotion I have for the team.”

  118. Yeah right, Tony. I hear Dubrovnik, for example, is just hideous.
    http://www.marri-rc.org/upload/dubrovnik1.jpg

  119. Great post Darius. Been checking out your blog lately too. YW, good one having a guest who can set the same tone you do; upbeat, realistic, and supporting.

A part of me is always amazed that people think there is so much to criticize about this club. We have one of the best, if not the best, current manager in the game, one of the best stadiums, a slick, young, international team that consistently challenges (and that is all you can do, if you put yourself up there enough you will win but no guarantees) for trophies, a youth academy that is second to none in the UK and probably the world, an incredible history that the current squad is building on, and the sharpest looking strip in the league. We also do NOT have a criminal overlord/moneybags who can scupper the club if he decides to pull stakes or sell, a board who is tapping players up and being shady, and a debt load that is tied not related to tangible assets.

Really, if you are still just kicking lumps out of the team/manager/setup you have to ask why you aren’t a supporter of whoever last won a trophy rather than this great club.

  120. Hitler isn’t taking the Chelsea transfer ban too well:

    http://u.nu/9dh53

  121. oops, part should read “a debt load that is not tied to tangible assets.”

  122. Ole, saw that clip too but the version I saw was Hitler reacting to Chelsea losing to some lower league team in the FA cup or something a few years ago. Priceless!

  123. Amazing that a club can be so consistently be singled out for hate and bias, when it has played some of the most attractive football over the past decade. And yet it seems that many neutrals appreciate what is happening at the club more than many of the so called “supporters”. Certainly it is within rights to be disappointed and even angry at not finishing higher than any other team in the prem or in europe, but why hate? Surely those other consistently “losing” teams can’t have anything to cheer about? It is funny that we have been so spoiled by our successes of the last decade that we feel entitled to win it all and anything less is a failure, not good enough. I wonder if these negativity spouting “supporters” support their spouses and family with the same enthusiasm? If someone “supported” me the way some of these fans do the club I wouldn’t want to know them and I certainly wouldn’t want to associate with them. In times of adversity people come together, circle the wagons. I wonder how some of these “supporters” imagine that they are on the inside of the circle. Rather than contributing anything useful to the club, their constant bitching only undermines what the club is trying to achieve. When the club eventually wins something I wonder if they will see their “support” as a valuable contribution to the success.

  124. Did I hit a nerve there Tony? My 6-fingered friend.

  125. The ban on under 18s as being proposed by Fifa and Uefa will be good for the local kids. Getting players from out is usually a short term solution that hurts the local lads. In Arsenal we see the problem where the likes of Henri Lansbury, despite captaining the English under 19s, doesn’t even get a look in. In fact the foreign countries gain as the players who stay behind get the chances the English players don’t. No wonder France has much more young talent than England.

  126. Fantastic article. The blood n guts of all that’s good, all that’s exciting, all that’s romantic and all that’s realistic about Arsenal. I’m in no hurry and it’s a beautiful little journey.

Jay-Z could you kindly get every pubic hair slowly but excruciatingly plucked from you nether regions as you immaturity and impatience are all fitting of a prepubescent twit. It sounds like the best recipe is a nice cheap Man U Jersey from you local street market stall. You’ll be a happier man for it.

  127. Have a read of this open letter to mike dean – it’s top class.

    http://blog.emiratesstadium.info/?p=1253&cpage=1#comments

  128. Anyone see John Terry’s press conference earlier?

Asked about UEFA ‘clamping down’ on diving Terry said, “It’s a good thing but not really applicable to the England team. Cos of the way we was brung up, diving isn’t part of our game. It’s not in our mentality cos England is an honest country and we’re all English so we’s all honest.”

A slight over-simplification John, steeped in denial and a little bit of rascism.

Now Terry can live in denial all he wants, but Rooney needs calling out on his ‘I’ve never intentionally dived’ comments. The whole world has seen him dive, on five or six clear cut occasions. Why isn’t he brought to task over these specific incidents? He lies and noone questions it.

Maybe a courageous Croatian journalist can stand up and call him a diver, a liar, a cheat and a granny-shagger at the next press-conference.

Just to level the playing field for Eddy.

  129. I agree with Remonstrate. Well said Darius.

  130. LimparAssist,

One clear discovery from decoding the human DNA is that English players are incapable of diving. What they do is anticipate fouls and cleverly go down. It’s not diving if you don’t call it so.

Honestly, the media will be failing again if Terry doesn’t get wide ridicule for those comments. They’re nauseating.

  131. Nasir Jones-Nasri

Quality post, Darius. It’s time to support Arsenal or side with the corrupt knob sucking media. There’s no inbetween.

And Fuck Jay Z. Nas absolutely slaughtered that phony, style biting (ripped off from Big L and Notorious BIG), wannabe to the point where Jay Z had no choice but to join him and be friendly after getting beat so bad. If that’s what you aspire to be, Jay Z, then so be it. A gullible copycat, with no realistic ideas or insight. Fuck off back to Le Groan.

  132. @OG and Limper.

Is it only me or don’t folks have the sense to see how ridiculous Rooney and Terry have been when responding to the diving questions?

LOL @being clever. The other day Alvin Martin couldn’t help himself proclaiming that Rooney had been really clever in drawing the foul from Almunia. If anything, their intent is more damaging than their simulation.

I guess there’s also another conspiracy to make the England team believe that they’re the best and can win the world cup with Stevi G and Rooney on form.

We have a saying where I come from that “an ape cannot see its asshole, it can only see it’s companions”.

  133. Thanks Darius …
During the period of cutting criticism last season, the signals of success we now see openly were not hard to see, not that difficult to understand and appreciate – the growing quality of players, the trajectory of future success. I had the utmost respect for the club, and its manager, for having the guts to implement such an audacious, far-reaching plan, regardless of trophies or not.

We are extremely privileged to be part of this wonderful adventure – it’s that simple.

    More fire, Arsenal!!

  134. I know Dubrovnik very well…who is knocking it?

  135. The whoe of the Dalmation Coast from West to East is very important to our club. Anyone know why?

  136. Zim Paul…thanks for your feedback.

I too am proud to be part of this adventure. As they say, the difference between insanity and genius can only be measured by success.

Until we achieve “success” as defined by some disillusioned fans, Wenger is more than likely to be considered insane and don’t be surprised if some of them opt for using muti on Wenger and the boys.

  137. Sorry, not the whoe or the whore of the Dalmation Coast…..the whole of the Dalmation Coast!

  138. OG, totally agree that the media will be failing if Terry’s not flagged up here for being such a tool.

Nasir Jones Nasri, totally agree Jay-Z is nowt compared to Big L (RIP). Put it On Big L, Put it On!
If you’re still reading Jay-Z, I nicked an advance of your new album and would have shared it with my mates, but you’ve been let off. Because it’s sh*t.

Darius, “an ape cannot see its asshole, it can only see it’s companions”. – perfect.

ZimPaul, “We are extremely privileged to be part of this wonderful adventure”. Nail on the head.

  139. Frank, I give up, why?

  140. Hitler one, a classic, OG.

Relieved – read it in the Express, so… Wayne, granny-fucker extraordinaire, has told the nation that he has NEVER dived, and thinks it a terrible thing to do.

Thanks, Wayne – English and as honest as the paper who paid you.
Phew! For a while i thought Rooney and Gerrard had been unsportsmanlike.
    Pass the sickbowl, Alice..

It’s a part of the world I know little about, but that should all change once I start my Dalmatia 101 course next year.

Wilshere just came on and won a pen for the England u-21s.

  143. Does Jay z support Arsenal football club??

The honest answer should be “NO”

  144. A real penalty? ;)

  145. OK, well the whole of the Dalmation Coast was part of the Venetian Empire. The Venetians of the time popularised the term Arsenal as we now know it. Turns out that they were very good at making warships…I think Arsenal was originally a term for a workshop. They would start building a ship at one end of a watery street and as the ship floated along the waterway it was kitted out….at the end of the waterway…a brand new and quite brilliant warship. Arsenal….and the Arsenal youth system?…I think so don’t you?

  146. Bragging Rights Ltd

    That’s wicked.

Also derived from Arabic, Sina’ah, “art, craft, skill”.

  147. Wow, cool.

  148. Thanks for the link, Ole Gunner. Real hilarious. I had a real good laugh over it.

In case you’ve missed it, here’s the link provided by OG :D

Don’t believe the hyperbole– its like a murder spree, get sniped verbally..

long may this blog shine the light into the darkness..

    __Arshenal__

  150. Yes BRL it is originally Arabic. The Venetians adapted it to mean workshop, it became a much used word across Europe as a result. It was associated with warships and then arms. The Arabic word still stands though…

On a different note, the English football establishment has to be the most disloyal, dishonest, unintelligent and ignorant bunch of dirty dogs that sport has ever, ever seen.

  151. …sorry the English football establishment has to be almost the most disloyal, dishonest, unintelligent and ignorant bunch of dirty dogs that sport has ever, ever seen. If it weren’t for Scotland for whom one must add whinging, whining, poor losers…the English football establishment would be the very worst.

  152. Seems to me that a lot of time and effort could be saved by having Alex Fuckface Ferguson as Chairman of the UEFA Disciplinary Board, for a short while that is as UEFA will be disbanded within the next 5 years.

  153. Arsenal are not only sustainable as a business and footballing entity, but we are completely outside of the English and European football establishments. This is a very good thing.

  154. Great post today Darius.

  155. English players incapable of diving…hahaha…

Maybe because they’re so fat and don’t feel like they dived?

  156. My, my, Mr BRL – almost as clever as Frank:

    Arsenal:

1506, “dockyard,” from Italian. arzenale, from Arabic dar as-sina’ah “house of manufacture, workshop,” from sina’ah “art, craft, skill,” from sana’a “he made.” Applied by the Venetians to a large wharf in their city, which was the earliest meaning in Eng. Sense of “public place for making or storing weapons and ammunition” is from 1579.

    YW

  157. Rooney’s legs are too weak to lift his massive bulk off the ground. I suppose he crumples rather than dives.

  158. When Rooney says he’s never dived he’s referring to the olympic sport. No he’s a footballer. He simulates, he doesn’t dive.

  159. Dived or at least swooped down on some poor bastards nan though didn’t, dirty boy!

  160. didn’t he.

    Sorry.

  163. Luke,

The Eduardo incident is too sensitive at the moment. Please refrain from making jokes about it. Thanks.

  164. Ole G…great reply to the hack.

  165. Richard Williams and I have had intertwining paths, from the days when he stood in for Bob Harris, to the days when our children were in the same class at school. Prig.

  166. OleGunner, your comments on the Richard Williams’ rather rushed and mercenary article were excellent. Very well done.

  167. RVP……Click Click Click.

  168. Thanks guys!

Isn’t the reflexive little englander approach annoying sometimes?

The truth of the matter is that Arsenal have the best academy in England or close to it, and we have young English talent cutting the grade, alongside promising kids from everywhere.

To be fair to Williams he at least acknowledges that all Premier League clubs now scout kids abroad.

Why on earth does anyone think that if Arsenal had 10 English Cesc Fabregases in the academy they wouldn’t be playing? Or if Ferguson had 6 indigenous Ronaldo’s they wont make it at Man United?

  169. Exactly,G4E…don’t forget to tune in to RvP and Holland fucking Scotland right up the arse on Wednesday next. I would like to think that his hattrick will knock Scotland out of the World Cup. But most likely one of the Scottish players will break Robin’s leg and FIFA will ban Robin for 10 games for not diving. What a state football is in.

  170. Riley8

U are; a pig, a bastard an unrelenting excuse for a human being, a jealous twat (cos u are not this brilliant) and above all a sorry Spud fan.

  171. Bragging Rights Ltd

Spain v Belgium looks promising as well. Belgium has great young players in every possible position except up front, where they have absolutely nobody, which is probably why they’re not doing as well as they might. Actually, they’re a bit like Wales in that they could be a real force in a couple of years.

Still, they should give Spain a decent game.

  172. I will be watching RvP demolish the Scotts Frank.

  173. @ Darius Stone

Hey Stone…lovely article. Really well thought out and clear sighted. We’ve (meaning many of us actually,) discussed these issues on several occasions but this is probably the most clearly they’ve been set out.

    ‘Propers’ to you!

  174. RE: Chelsea’s Ban

I understand that it is not actually an issue of traditional media tapping up as such. Lens, it is rumored, have documentation of Chelsea illegally “contacting” the player himself to promise that they would sign him if he walked on the signed contract he had with Lens. This is a significantly different problem than the old talk through the media garbage. This is actually more like “poaching”, and if you have evidence…

  175. Frank:
    “Whispering” Bob Harris… a legend!
    You keep exalted company!

  176. Big IF – but if one can beleve the media, he was as good as kidnapped. Family no doubt looking for a pay-out…but – time another team got screwed, whether fair or not; no longer care…

  181. Did any one see Ramsey’s goal in the Wales under21 against Italy? A must see…it’s on 101goals

  182. 1 loose cannon,

It’s all down to Wenger and the board’s astute management of the club. 7th most valuable club in sports is no mean feat.

It’s not news though. The situation has been the same for 2-3 years.

  183. Ole- its down to Wenger’s vision otherwise we will be down the picking order I’m a little bit worried when Wenger retires . Are we going to make it a must to continue with this style of football? I hope we do. Most people think Bergkamp will take the throne one day, he fits the bill but he is still learning.Anway I think Wenger will stay until he is 70 and he will have a say on who should take over.

  184. is there a reason we don’t have a squad number 13?

  185. Ateeb. Noted your post.

    Have a nice day.

  186. @Harsh.

Many people believe in the superstition that the number 13 is unlucky.

Some buildings for example do not have a 13th floor and skip from 12 to 14.

  187. Hleb was #13

  188. @GFE, So 13 is really unlucky, huh?

  189. In my view, Hleb was under-appreciated too during his time with us. His dribbling was seen as an indulgence, his preference for a pass to a shot was viewed as a weakness and infuriarated fans week in week out. Cries of “shoot” rang out whenever Hleb was in possession and within sight of goal.

Funny how true it is of the nature of many Arsenal fans that they speak of a player with fondness only after he has left us.

  190. Luke…I miss Hleb.

I thought he was a class act, and opened up doors for us when teams parked the bus.

But like an ex girlfriend, we had to move on.

  191. Usmanov is close to a takeover apparantly.

  192. Darius

I have moved on. Hleb can’t turn the clock back and we can’t too.

  193. In a hospital when you go to Ward 13…..

  194. At last Gordon Taylor is supporting Arsenal and Eduardo.

  195. wow … now that’s what i call a thread!!

i fall in the ‘blind faith’ category. loving the writing style. nice!

  196. A very nice post YW.

  197. Hi Dude, you are spot on. All that it important is that we need to utilize the criticisms to better the team and support for the team.

The challenging part is that the referees have tended to have outright bias on us and played 12 against Arsenal 11.

We should also question the club board, they always make public promises about availability of funds to buy players, but do they really release the funds to Wenger? Or they just leave Wenger to swallow the wrath of the fans in the name of collective responsibility in defense of the deceitful board.

Lets keep faith in Wenger, he has tried all he can without adequate resources.

The season is bright, we shall have something.

    Isaac – Uganda

  198. Hleb?

Aw come on – the guy had one great season at which point he started believing his own press and then he left right then. Note that just 12 the year before I remember him (AND Flamini actually) being treated like rag dolls by the West Ham players.

But both felt they were bigger than the team.

What is there to regret about that? We did nothing wrong. You can only regret bringing them to Arsenal, not them leaving. Nobody pushed them out – they left.

  199. The youth project has too many flaws as we saw last year when he sold Flamini and Hleb and did not bring any replacements in, which was quite frankly neglence of the highest order. It cost us a year and meaning the so called ‘transition’ never ends, just sees us rotting away in a vicious circle.

If you waste 5 years building the team around Cesc and he leaves next summer with nothing to show for then what happens? All that for nothing and now are got to start all over again. Its fucking bollocks man.

Yes, the media get carried away sometimes but they have to sell papers, they need to sensationlise matters and that is why everything is black and white.

However, with regards to our recent barren spells in terms of trophies where do you draw the line? Ok 3 years without silverware is not a crisis but what about 4? No, still no crisis? Ok, how about 5? 7? 8? 10? Trophies dont matter anymore?

Come on, lets get real. Arsenal charge the highest ticket prices in Europe, therefore there should be something to justify this. Transfers to make the squad competitive and trophies are a must. Arsenal are not operating in 1983 anymore, we have a world class manager, world class stadium and world class players, so trophies are a must.

And 5 years without silverware is not good enough. If it was out of Wenger’s hands I would say ‘ok, 4th place is not bad’. But we do have money (£40m from the Ade and Toure sales) why did we only sign one player this summer? Why did we not replace Hleb and Flamini last year?

Wenger has many critics but some are justifed, 5 years without success is not good enough and that is why this season is make or break for our gaffer.
