Celtic, No-one Coming Or Going Yet & More

Celtic pitch up at The Emirates for the second leg of the Champions League play-off, trailing by two goals, an advantage which should be enough to see Arsenal progress. Celtic have had a wretched time on the road in recent years, their win in Moscow in the last round apparently their first in Europe’s top club competition since decimalisation came into effect in the United Kingdom. Or at least that’s quite possibly how it felt to their travelling support.

With Cesc injured, Arsene made it quite clear that there would only changes to personnel not the formation which it seems will keep everyone happy with Song and Arshavin both expressding their contentment with the 4-3-3, high pressing game that the team has employed this season.

I suspect that will mean Song coming back into the side with Diaby settling centrally for the match. Ramsey could be preferred but Arsene will believe it important to score the first or at least not concede. Diaby offers more defensive power than the Welshman.

Wenger gave quite a wide ranging press conference yesterday. Qualification is not vital financially but is, according to the manager, from a football perspective. Without doubt, the opportunity to have the chance of winning the Champions League is a key element for the players and Wenger knows it. Equally, for a manager who has lost his three European finals thus far, it will be building into an obsession of sorts, pursuit of glory in the highest echelons of the game.

For tonight, it would be a surprise if Wenger did not revert to a similar line-up to that which worked so effectively at Parkhead a week or so ago. This would mean the return of Sagna, Clichy and Bendtner. Wenger was at pains to praise William Gallas:

He has taken the right attitude which is what you expect from a top-level sportsman. What’s more he has scored three goals in Arsenal’s first three games in all competitions.

What is the most important for me is that he’s looking sharp defensively. We know that he will score goals, although some of them have been a bit accidental but very helpful.

What I mean is that it’s not what I expect from him if he doesn’t score any more – but as a defender I’m very happy. That’s all I want from him.

And that is what he is getting. The decision to sell Toure has put responsibility of being the defence’s senior partner back onto Gallas’ shoulders, a burden he has worn impressively so far this season.

Vermaelen’s start in the side will have helped the Frenchman, knowing that he has a sure-footed defender beside him will enable Gallas to concentrate more on his own game without being concerned about his partner.

I would expect the line-up to be:

Almunia; Sagna, Vermaelen, Gallas, Clichy; Denilson, Diaby, Song; Bendtner, van Persie, Arshavin

Arsene meanwhile is keeping his options open with less than one week to go before the transfer window closes. Blaise Matuidi has not been the subject of a bid although Arsene did not rule out being interested in him. Philippe Senderos has not signed for anyone nor reading between the lines, is he likely to do so before the transfer window closes. The question is whether the player is waiting for January to sign a pre-contract when he can demand a higher signing-on fee and salary since he will be available on a free transfer.

Elsewhere, The Mirror is reporting that Fran Merida’s promotion to the first team squad is to be rewarded with an improved deal as is Alex Song, reflecting his continued presence in the starting line-up.

Enjoy the match wherever you are watching it. ’til Tomorrow.

  1. Morning all, come on you reds!

  2. If NB is worth 50K a wk then Alex Song should be on 100K! The kid has been sensational.

    Come on you Gunners!

  3. random person has an opinion

Why is Arshavin not rested for this game, we will need him fit for the MU’s.

  4. random, because to not play one of your best players in a champs league qualifier would be crazy in my opinion. Were no there yet, sure it’s looking likely. He’s played 3 games he shouldn’t need to rest. I think Us Arsenal fans are a little too cautious about players fitness. For obvious reasons, but after 4 games he should be able to play against Man U easily.

If wenger didn’t play Arsh and then something terrible happend, I think people would linch him and for the reason he hadn’t played Arshavin.

  5. Arshavin’s inclusion brings the strength of the team up to a level strong enough to score the first all important goal, as soon as that is done the tie is all but over and he can be taken off still fresh for Saturday.

  6. Also he is the one player struggling for form so needs the game more than others.

  7. Good on Merida eh. How strong are we in central midfield…

    Cesc
    Song
    Denilson
    Diaby
    Ramsey
    Nasri
    Rosicky
    Merida
    Wilshire

all able to play in that position, and not a bad player there.

  8. Gunner From Nigeria

Thank Goodness this tie comes to end today. The talking about it has been too much.

  9. Arshavin hasn’t stood out in our games so far, so I don’t see why he should be given special protection.

  10. The Russian Mara.. He looks so worthy of praise when he points around like Dunga, telling others where they should be..

  11. Good point, LimparAssist (on the previous post). I knew a man who took part in a bank-robbery, during which he killed a young woman, one of the cashiers. At his trial, he blamed the police. If they had prevented him robbing the bank, he would never have shot the woman.

    He was sentenced to life-imprisonment.

  12. Poliziano, he is no doubt at his best one of our top 3/4 best players. Therefore it’s in the teams best they give him time to click. So as Steww says he finds his form.

  13. @PZ

you just forgot the phrase: “true story…”

  14. YW

i agree with your lineup cause thats how it should be.and if wenger thinks outside the box and plays ramsey in cesc position then we are fucked.and i know he is trying to promote ramsey but this isnt a business company crap this is football here and if ramsey starts he might score but who knows what will happen tonight.

  15. Gunner From Nigeria

It would be nice to see Arshavin in the Cescy role, then Eduardo on the left.

    Song Diaby Arshavin

    Bendtner RVP Eduardo

  16. Riley you not think if we get this game tied up with 1 more goal we could get players like ramsey, gibbs, wilshire, vela (although out), merida on the pitch to give them valuable experience.

And that is managment, look at how playing song in defence and diaby on the left has improved them this game. Those are the kinds of calls our manager makes, sooooooo much better than simply forking out 20m on a player. Give Ramsey as much playing time as possible I say and then next season he’ll be awesome.

  17. Arshavin Hasnt been at his best because we are still not using him in his best position,2nd striker. He is a wonderful player but we wont see the best of him till he plays behind the main striker.A waste of the great mans talents

  18. Arshavin must play so we know we will definitely win, his presence makes the team dangerous and puts opposing defendesr on the back foot

  19. People said Thierry was a winger.

  20. I think we will see RVP rested tonight and Eduardo getting a start. I’d really like to see Eduardo and Arsh alongside Bendy. Diaby’s impressive performance on sat should guarantee him a start in midfield as well.

    3-0 to the arse!

  21. We need not worry about Cesc not playing, we have Diaby who is just as good if not better

  22. Yo Stewwwwwwwwwwwww, hows it going dude?

  23. Let’s just get through tonights game without any further injuries, then maybe we can snap up another player or two, then go forth and conquor all this season.

  24. To all those who doubt that Arshavin is worthy of special protection, I point you to the away game against Liverpool last season. That is what he is capable of doing and that is why he is worth protecting.

  25. The players who are worth protecting are the players who are actually winning games for us at the moment.

  26. I think a clean sheet should be the main priority. We have to develop the habit of shutting other teams out whoever it might be. That would also solidify the partnership between gallas and vermaelen.

We should go through tonight. Quite frankly I would PREFER a 0-0 draw than a 4-2 win for this match to help tighten the defensive mentality of the team. Of course, the ideal scenario would be a 4-0 win, but as long as we keep a clean sheet, it would be beneficial to the team. Dont need to win.

Would love to see ramsey partner song.

    Cheers all!!!

  27. Quite agree PZ

  28. London exactly!

Arshavin seems happy with the role he’s been given as a wide striker but with space to roam. He’ll come good playing as is, maybe just needs a little time to adapt. He’s always been a striker and now in a year he’s played 2 different positions.

As Steww said Henry was a winger at Juve and took a while to adapt to striker but came good, it’s similar but with reversed positions.

  29. Pz, I’m assuming your man at the bank was operating somewhat less conspicuously than a mob of millwall fans in West Ham, at one of the world’s most notorious derbies, and was therefore without the company of riot police and helicopters.

In any case, I’m not blaming the police that were there. It just sounds like there should have been many, many more of them. And if they can’t police it then why not play this fixture behind closed doors?

Or look at Ajax vs Feyonoord, fans aren’t allowed on foot anywhere near the ground, they’re bussed in and deposited through the gates, picked up at the final whistle and bussed off again. The club still gets the gate receipt, the fans see the game and the hooligans go to a park somewhere and have a scrap. Siimples.

  30. PZ what exactly do you meen by protect?

If thats the case then no player would ever come back from injury as 9.9 times out of 10 a player comes back from injury rusty.

Giving a player time to click is essential as if you drop players left right and centre then it becomes difficult to keep your best players and sign future talent. The way to go is the way wenger does it, have FAITH in your players. Arshavin will come good.

Jesus were talking about him as if he’s played bad, he hasn’t not in the least he’s just not scored.

  31. PZ, exactly, Arshavins presence wins matches therefore hemust be protected at all costs. We should also probably assign him two security gaurds for when he’s away from the ground

  32. Still think Millwall AND West ham should both have seat allocations slashed for the rest of the season and have them both booted out of next seasons carling cup. Silly b*ds

  33. steww
Carlo Ancellotti also sold Henry coz he didn’t feel he had the qualities of a striker..

  34. james

i agree cause we are not desperate to see cesc playing tonight.we have diaby if not arsharvin who is capable of playing cesc position.

  35. I didn’t say Arshavin should be dropped. I’m saying there is no special reason to rest him, or to take him off early this evening.

  36. Poliziano

My comments were answering Random at 10:00 but as you seem to want to join in why don’t you tell who you think is winning games for us and therefore worthy of more protection.

  37. oh sorry pz I wen’t off on one, I thought you meant he didn’t warrant being kept in the line up as protection.

    I’ll shut up. :)

Theres an argument for keeping players that are more than able in a squad when they aren’t totally clicking. I still think he’ll come good.

  38. Players who need more protection -

    Andrei ‘The saviour’ Arshavin
    Cesc ‘wee willy winkle’ Fabregas
Robin ‘She was 18′ Van Persie
Abou ‘your leg is mine’ Diaby

Players who need less protection –

    Emanuel ‘Pennywise’ Eboue
    Niklaus ‘scarlet pants’ Bendtner

  39. PZ,

It is fashionable for many to hail Arshavin as our ‘saviour’ last season and hero this season and I can understand that such a blinkered mentality puts you off for Football is a team game.

However, I dont think it is right to treat Arshavin as inferior to anybody in our squad. Playing on the left side of midfield for us is something he is only getting used to now having played centrally as a playmaker or second striker for Zenit.

I believe that when one of Rosicky or Nasri return, we may see Arshavin deployed in a more advanced role to benefit from his talent. His talents though hyped by most gooners beyond reason are still considerable.

  40. james

you cracked me up niklaus ‘scarlet pants’bendner.and i remeber wenger fined him cause he was at a night club with his pants pull over and drunk aswell. and so i should call bendner pullups cause of his pants.

  41. I think they were huggies

  42. I say since the system is working out well, play Almunia in central midfield and Diaby in goal….LOL!

    Who needs Cesc?

  43. James,

The next time you call Arshavin a ‘saviour’ we will pit you against Diaby in a 5 a side with him being given instructions to tackle you every time you have the ball.

  44. Alex, Arshavin is my tip for player of the year this season, he’s mustard, even if he does look like he cant read

  45. alex

simply arsharvin is our saviour.and i still dont believe you dont know much about arsharvins talent.and if you watched that liverpool match which he scored all 4 goals then you will know what i am talking about.

  46. I think we will see Rambo and Eduardo get the start today. Arshavin should start, but should also be subbed out the minute we get the 2nd goal tonight. Neither Andrey or RVP have scored yet, but both are playing well. I pick AA to show up Big at Old Trafford on Saturday. He’s a Big game performer!

  47. This conversation started because one person mentioned Arshavin and asked why is he playing tonight. I therefore focused on him. The same person could have mentioned Van Persie and I would have said that he won’t be in the starting line up in order to protect him for Saturday. The same person could have also mentioned Denilson and I would have said there is a strong chance that he will make way for Ramsey in order to protect him for Saturday.

Arshavin has been a great addition but I am not one of those who thinks of him as the be all and end all.

  48. I don’t believe Arshavin is inferior in ability to other players at Arsenal. Nevertheless, if any players need to be saved for big matches, it is the ones who are contributing most AT THE MOMENT, not the ones who stood out four months ago.

  49. riley 8,

I dont think you even read my comment on Arshavin earlier. Going by your last comment and indeed your history of comments, it is advisable for me to simply agree and not debate with you at all.

  50. james

    huggies thats damn funny.

  51. alex

sorry mate i think i miss read your comment.

  52. Anybody remember Andrey’s 4 goals at Anfield last season? The guy is a Super-Star due to go off at any time. Just his presence on the pitch distracts the oppositions backline from the jump. Its obvious the strikers have yet to adjust to the new 4-3-3 line-up.

  53. How about…

    - – - – - – - -Almunia – - – - — –
    Bac – - Gallas- – - TV- – -Clichy
    - – - – — – — Song – - – - — – -
    - – - -Ramsey- – -Denilson – - -
    Arshavin- – - – - – - – - – –Diaby
    - – — – - — Eduardo – - — – –

  54. I agree with Poliziano about protecting the most effective players and allowing those that aren’t firing on all cylinders more playing time to adjust, and improve (match fitness, understanding, etc). Makes sense to be honest.

And will everyone stop feeding that bloody troll! Seriously guys you know who he is, and what kind of a scum bag he is. Why do you entertain the little spud prick?

  55. If Cesc and Arshavin didnt play, you’d notice the difference in the way team would play, they wouldnt be scared and we’d be back to the mediocre performances of last seasons bore draws. Even chrisgoona could work that out

  56. Serk da Turk, I agree 1000%, you sure know your football. Which spud prick are we talking about and i’ll cut off all supplies to him?

  57. darius stone

Almunia in central midfield and Diaby in goal.i think thats a crazy idea mate.

  58. Don’t think anybodies having a pop London, just a health mass debate.

  59. els

I’m looking forward to tonight’s game.

  60. steww

henry was a winger back at his time when he was playing for monaco.til wenger snap him up and brought him to highbury.and no one knew henry’s talent but wenger.

  61. Not wanting to sound like a cock, but recently James seems to be making more an more sense in his comments.

I am relatively new to this site, but judging on what i’ve seen he has a narky sense of humour, and is very down on the team when things look bad. But now that it’s going good, he’s cheered himself up.

If he is a genuine spud them im a bit of a mug, being taken in. But if not I don’t think people should be telling others not to comment with him.

Thats probably put me in the dog house, but as i say I don’t know his past posts.

  62. London, im flying about tonight, If we get through. I’m hoping it will give Wenger the incentive to strengthen and the boys the gee-up to stick it to man ure.

    Up the Arse.

  63. riley he went to juve after monaco where they wasted him on the wing, he never really settled and wanted to sign for us before the Juve move.

Thats when Wenger saved him and told him to stop wasting his time on the wings, and turned him into one of the best strikers of all time.

  64. james

arshavin said he never concentrate at school cause he always gets in trouble making practical jokes on teachers and never took school seriously.and thats why he preferd playing football and i dont think he can read.

  65. It’s not over yet. Come on the Celts!

  66. els

i wanted to say juve but i thought i might have been wrong.

  67. Arsenal…Arrssenal…Aarrsenal

  68. Arshavin has yet to break into a sweat this season, talk about ease himself in… besides, he’s a senior player, he should be playing in pretty much every game at this stage of the season.

  69. I admire your pluck Paul. And no it’s not over yet.

But it will be pretty soon.

    Arsenal…Arrrsenall….Arrrrrrrrsenal

  70. Paul do you no ryan? Well he’s scotch aint he. Can’t be that many of y’s. I got to say I think I prefered him.

  71. els,

Some of my best friends are Tottenham and of course they’ve got to have a sense of humour. Same reason Walruses are so fat.

But they are also a very bitter people, primarily because a cannon will always be cooler than a chicken.

But can this be reason enough to let your bitterness manifest itself in a sociopathic internet splurge of confused jealousy-fuelled NON-sense? For quite so much of one’s life?

I think not. Far deeper and far stranger social and psychological problems lie at the door our piteous troll.

  72. Gunner From Nigeria

Some of these avatars are scary.

  73. els this thread is merely 2hours old and already the only note worthy thing he has said has been this:

Ok lets start from the top.

    “Andrei ‘The saviour’ Arshavin……”

So you’re obviously not familiar with sarcasm then. You might struggle with my analysis here.

    “….Cesc ‘wee willy winkle’ Fabregas”

Yeah. This how all Arsenal fans refer to their captain. Right?

“…..Robin ‘She was 18′ Van Persie”

Very typical of a Gunners fan this. Referring to our star striker in relation to the the false accusations of rape from when he was in Holland (which he was cleared of by the way). Yeah I mention this every time I talk about RVP. “He’s world class; can perform ridiculous tricks; great left foot; and he supposedly raped someone.”

I’m not even going to bother with the rest. But do you know the only common denominator between every single line of that quote? Not one Arsenal player is mentioned without it being followed by some derogatory or sarcastic comment. Just because he said “players who need more protection” before all that crap doesn’t change the nature of his comments.

The only reason he says anything close to sensible is to entice people back in to conversation, so that he can carry on doing what he does best. He’s a troll. He gets on a bandwagon; in this case Arshavin being great (or saviour as he put it so sarcastically) and then proceeds to do his dirty work.

Like I said; don’t feed the troll.

  74. haha at Limpar, that’s some funny writing.

So is he defo spurs? He sometimes seems to know stuff, just fleetingly.

  75. LimparAssist,

You’re getting me angry now, who and where is this bastard?

  76. Alex,

In all fairness – AA impact last season was amazing. So your very correct to point our that its a little rich to accuse him of not playing well, when he’s been so used to playing in a traditional central role and is currently adapting to the left winger position.

The lad is a match winner at the very highest level and IMO the best no 10 in the world today. The speed and deftness of his first-touch is just beguiling at times. Did you see the little half volley – drop flick – sand wedge pass he made for Eduardo in the atletico game pre-season? Something only a player like Bergkamp could have done. He already shown signs of utter genius and in time his talent will be reinforced. And Im not trying to big him up over other players in the team – but he does have an exceptional ability to unlock defenses as does Cesc, albeit, in a different way.

The entire formation is new to the team – and the forward interplay is still a work in progress. But its great to see that we’re finally adapting a formation that is suitable to the style of football we play as opposed to setting up a formation that excludes certain players because they’re 4 inches smaller than others when the opposition is bigger than us. Were playing on our terms – and I hope this continues.

Its also great to see players working for each other and shutting players down starting from RVP down. Defensive discipline is a culture that needs to be drilled into a team. Its not something that can be bought in. Its this change in culture that makes us a markedly different team to last season. And again – I just hope we maintain it.

If we get by Celtic – I then think Arsene will enter the transfer market. A few additions should further bolster the squad and set us up nicely for the season ahead.

  78. Sorry about the double post. I was stuck in moderation.

  79. In all the talk of protecting this or that player, let’s not forget that tonight’s game is actually even BIGGER than the game on Saturday. We could lose to ManU and still win the league, if it goes wrong tonight, we are out of the CL.

Arshavin will be rested if Wenger thinks he’s tired, same as any other player. He’ll put together what he thinks is the best team for this match, taking into account who’s available.

    ***
    @ Serk da Turk
    I agree with you!

  80. Serk Da Turk in De House,

I see now why you’re nickname on here is ‘Brains’.

Everything I say on here about Arsenal is true, just from a different perspective (except diaby being better then Fabregas).

Maybe if you spent more time talking about football and a little less time analysing my comments, which clearly aren’t supposed to be taken too seriously, you could lead a happier life.

Do you get me Serk Da Turk?

  81. Every game is an exciting prospect at the moment, wondering who will be the next one to step up and show us what they can do.

Song, Denilson, Diaby and Vermaelen have already done it, Eduardo has looked sharp, and Cesc has been up to his usual high standards. Arsh and van Persie are quality, and we all know they will come good.

For me I’d like to see Bendtner through the middle tonight, and bag himself a couple of goals. He needs the confidence boost sooner rather than later.

  82. Anyway I’m off. See you guys later.

  83. Serk his comments regarding have an overall positive tone. His sense of humour is at some players expense, which can be frustrating but if you go through life genuinely taking exception at some of these remarks your set for a coronary matey.

I have heard him mention things about the emirates that only a fan would know, I imagine he goes more than I as I don’t get to see many live matches now.

I can’t believe i’m sticking up for him. I know most of the time he’s a pain but I don’t like being told not to talk to people. I can’t argue I suppose if YW would moderate me for it it’s his site, but his he really that detrimental to this page?

  84. I don’t feed trolls.

  85. Joe,

Perhaps a central midfielder will be purchased and if Senderos leaves, a replacement.

  86. Fun gunner your spot on about Wengers team selection.

Also I don’t think he’ll ever let one player have the power that Henry had over the team. We were lucky fab stepped up in the way he did after losing th14.

  87. play arshy play your best players, remember fa cup semi, he didnt play, everyone (including me) moaned about it. He took 3-4 games last season to get going, could be his night tonight. As for James, i find him articulate and funny and unlike some not at all anal.

  88. boomer good lad.

Shall we set up an ‘I Love James” group.

Maybe all this admiration may freak him out and he’ll f*** off. Only joking.

  89. els I don’t take anything he says seriously and my heart is fine, thank you for your concern. And your more than welcome to your own opinions. I’m not even telling you what to do. If you want to talk to that troll it’s your choice. Nobody’s going to stop you I’m sure. It was merely some friendly advice, and a genuine query as to why someone would want to talk with a troll.

Looking back on the initial comment I can see how you might feel like I was trying to tell people what to do. But I never assumed that you’d WANT to converse with that guy. My apologies if that came across a bit bossy, it wasn’t my aim.

Anyway folks I’m off. See you round.

  90. I think Joe must be a writer for the colour supplement of a Sunday newspaper. He has the uncanny ability to make good things appear disgusting just by describing them.

  91. Limpar @ 10:56,

I make you right about what should’ve been done with these 2 sets of arsehole fans, the Ajax/Feyenord model is by far the safest way to do it. However, after G20 the Police were too scared to move in on a few hundred Tamils protesting and being a complete nuisance to traffic, outside Parliament. That 1 month pussy footing operation cost us the tax payer over £9Million for heavens sake, but hey nobody got hurt. Water cannon would’ve cost a few thousand quid probably.

Our Police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t, just wait and see how their hands are tied dealing with these 3 thousand odd tree hugging Climate Camp lot over the next few days. Most there will be peaceful but you just know others will be there to simply kick off and cause grief. Yet the front line of any protest will be made up of white middle class wankers with dreadlocks holding cameras.

If they do step out of line then water cannon the fu@#ing lot of em I say, same goes for those idiots last night. How many people’s nights where ruined yesterday as a result of these pratts, yet all the Police could do was hold a line and take video’s, fucksake.

You can just see UEFA and Platini rubbing their hands this morning, any shit tonight and you know they’ll come down hard on our teams. It’s ok if your Turkish or Italian though eh.

  92. @Alex & Joe

I’m inclined to agree with Alex, it is very unlikely to be more than one player, if anyone is bought. AW said that a player would have to be “exceptional” to come into the team, implying a high degree of satisfaction with his current squad – and now that Merida is getting a new deal, I won’t be surprised if he buys no-one at all, assuming Senderos stays. AW could even be looking at Coquelin, or Gilbert, Gavin Hoyte and people like that as the defensive cover if someone gets injured while Song and Eboue are away at the ACN.

    ****
    @ Boomer

Players are not codes and a match isn’t a computer calculation – you can’t say that if you play Player X, we will definitely win. AA could have a brilliant night or a not-so-brilliant one. And in any case, we’re not dependent on any one player to make a difference – not even Cesc. Look at what what Diaby did on Saturday, or at how Vermaelen and Song played against Everton and Celtic. We have a number of players who can turn matches for us. The balance of the team is what matters. If AA fits Wenger’s tactics, no doubt Wenger will play him. If not, he won’t.

  93. See ya terk. :) each to there own i suppose

  94. If we do score first tonight I can see us taking the piss. The Jocks will give up, we’ll make some subs and they will turn it on.

  95. Pz

Try to stick to your normal range of sexual analogies, poems and anti-semitic comments. Your better at that!

  96. I expect a 3-1 scoreline tonight. With the following team:

    Almunia
    Bac, TV, Gallas, Clichy
    Song, Denilson
    Diaby
    B52, AA
    Eduardo

Song and AA to be subbed by Ramsey and Rosicky mid-second half.

    Come on you gunners

  97. Such interesting matches coming up … of course, to win something it will always be with pressure matches on top of each other, so welcome aboard … whether Arsh or RvP or Bendtner or Ram or whatever, every one has perform at the highest level in every match, it takes a squad of about 20 really, not the 14 for a match. I really don’t care if Arsh plays or not, Wenger’s decision that, it’s not about him is it, it’s about a team and 8 months hard work and injuries, form, fitness.

I was amazed that the West Ham-Millwall clan war still goes on – in my days in London in the late 70s people talked of it. Traditions? Yeah sure.

Still, I wonder who won yesterday. I bet Millwall.

  98. Forget the Rosicky appearance. Not ready but may for Saturday’s joyful event!

  99. I suspect we will go cautiously hard tonight in the first half, and try and grab one quick. Then it’s about rehearsal for saturday. Excellent warm up.

  100. Alex / Fun G,

I think he has to get a DCM with Song departing in Jan and I do think Matuidi is an option. But I do agree with you FG about Coquelin. I think he’s going to be a great player but he might be a little premature yet.

I also think he wants to buy a CB – but only if Sendy leaves which now looks unlikely. Its a pity really because a move would probably be better for both parties.

I think Chamahk is also a possibility, but not a priority and only if the price is right.

  101. Good one, Joe. I enjoy the anti-semitic comments the most. Which of those comments is your favourite?

  102. Song Rights Ltd

There are loads, but I usually passover PZ’s anti-Semitic jokes.

  103. Song Rights Ltd

Joe and PZ are like chalk and cheesecake.

  104. Dgob

Not sure I’d want to risk Rosicky against the Celts or the Mancs to be honest, not for his first game back anyway, he’ll get broken again.

Actually, probably more so up at Old Trafford seeing as they’re allowed at least 5 meaty challenges before they’re even talked too, let alone booked. Gallas or RVP will of course be booked for their first challenge as is customary in those parts.

  105. I do wonder about the obsession with AA. He’s great that’s for sure, but the real adventure is Song-Denilson – it started last season, and looks increasingly like the backbone for years to come.

I haven’t heard Pz make anti semitic comments, ever. He tends towards centuries old classics at times, and the odd foray into the Italian mindset. I wonder if that is what Honest Joe refers to.

  106. I think the true front 3 for this team is
Dudu–RvP–Arsh, with Cesc as advanced midfield. As well as being scorers, those are four of the best passers in the game. One of the nice things about both Denilson and Diaby (and Rosicky and Nasri) is that they are excellent shooters from 18 and out, which is where they’ll get their chances this season. I can see the front four pulling defenses wildly out of shape all season, with lots of pullbacks teed up for the midfielders.

  107. Le Coq Sportif seems to have consistently stood out in his games for the reserves, and I expect he will get some chances in the first-team this season.

  108. Come on The Arsenal. Big game, let’s send the bhoys home and keep on marching. Like the lineup yogi. About to get on a flight, should be home for kickoff. Come on you Gunners!

  109. Good luck, gris gris, hope you make it home in time!

    ****
    @ Joe

I think he has to get a DCM with Song departing in Jan

I don’t think Wenger sees it in that way. First of all, he looks at defense as a team responsibility, and therefore part of everyone’s role. He looks at what an individual player can do well, rather than what their label is. He might think – Ramsey, Merida, Rosicky, Nasri, Coquelin – all of these players can play in CM and all can defend to some degree, so why buy a player specially for a six-week period? He’s more likely to go for formation or tactical changes. Diaby might even come in. All the noises AW is making – “massive squad”, “exceptional player” etc – lead me to believe he is unlikely to sign anyone except a CB if Senderos leaves. If he comes across another AA or Eduardo or Rosicky at a good price, I’m sure he won’t be able to resist, but apart from that, I can’t see it happening.

  110. Lets take care of business today!

  111. Finsburyparker

    http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/opinion/columnists/oliver-holt/English-football-can-find-its-voice-again-and-Arsenal-are-leading-the-way-article131355.html

Nice, balanced article. It is possible sneer at RedAction are doing, but there is a much bigger context in which their actions are taking place.

Talking of Arsenalisation, can the graphic designer of the new logo/badge be used for Cannon Fodder?

    I preferred the old logo.

“A Cannon is cooler then a Chicken”

Except when the Cannon has just been fired in order to burn some Trolls/S**Ds. (31-10-09)

Tonight will be a great game. I’ve always found the atmosphere at CL and CC cup games to be better. Must be the lack of all those life-long season ticket holders.

    Good luck Gunners.

  112. Yep, think you could well be right there Fun G, he won’t pass up a bargain but otherwise I wouldn’t put any money on us bringing in anyone else.

That’s not to say I’d be happy with that, far from it infact, just being realistic. Still feel we’re depending on 2 or 3 stepping up aswell as 2 or 3 others staying fit, a lot to ask I fear.

  113. That’s a good article, Finsburyparker – thanks. Nice to see REDaction and IG being given the credit they deserve.

  114. That’s the spirit Paul N.

Regardless of who starts tonight…arsh, diaby, nikky b, ramsey, merida…we will have more than enough to progress.

    I predict a professional, controlled 2-0 victory.
Eddy to score first and a clean sheet to boot!

  115. FG,

Very interesting perspective in relation to DCM.
However a number of other points I’d like to make:

First of all – Wenger has been trying to sign a specialist DCM for 2 seasons now. The Alonso and Melo bids failed.

What we have done after loosing Flam / Berto and Diarra is try to convert Denny and Diaby into DCM.

I don’t think Diaby is disciplined enough – and is more suited to a drifting – attacking role. Nor is he reliable given how injury prone he is.

Denny has adapted remarkably well and is a great player in the making. But I still don’t think he’s a specialist DCM.

Song is the only natural holding player we have to my mind. Coquelin and Ramsey, while making great strides – are not ready as yet to my mind.

I also don’t like the way we can tinker with the formation and tactics. Sometimes were too clever for our own good and it backfires. When this happens – we end up setting up the team to counter the opposition – which is exactly the opposite to the brand of football we play. This is what Benitez does.

I think Wenger will have been very impressed with Barca last season. They played teams on their terms. 4-3-3. No let up. Even down to 10 men in the 93rd minute in the bridge – they believed in the formation – it never really changed.

Last season we gambled, players got injured and we were very very short – when it mattered most. And we’ve been short for a number of seasons now. We’ve already lost two serious players this season. Our players are very technical – and likely to be injured. Just look at how many have been out already and we’ve yet to get into the meat of the season. Must we be short again, especially with funds in the bank..???

  116. Afternoon off, just got the booze in, oh yes come on you rip roaring gunnerrrrrs!!!

    Love European nights! luv em!

  117. With all the emphasis on who scores the first goal, expect Celtic to start very fast out the blocks tonight.

We will have be switched on, sharp and physical right from the off. No time for a sleepy strolling warm up with casual fluffy passing as has been the case on occasion.

BANG from the get-go. If we can match them for hunger and intensity from the kick-off, the massive gulf in skill and quality will do the rest.

    5-1

  118. Is 5-1 the aggregate score?

  119. No.

    7-1

  120. dreamers…

  121. 4-1. Rvp free kick. Eboue tap in. Celtic ping-pong scratchy header in a crowded box (the usual).

  122. Good luck gris gris…and hey ZimPaul!

    C’mon Arsenal!!!

  123. Gallas has scored with his head, ass and face. In that order. Tonight, I’ve 2/3 odds that he’ll knock one in with his prick. Anyone?

  124. - – - – - – - – - – - – Manuel – - – - – - – - – — – -

    – - – - – - – - – - – -Du Du – - – - – - – - – - – - – -

    Should do it.

If you’re not convinced of 5 goals in that side, look to Diaby and Bendtner coming off the bench to quell your doubts.

  125. hey Ax … arsenal are up for this, I was at the training session yesterday, fascinating, Wenger was telling the boys that this is their practice for ManU as Celtic are “little ManU” in style. He told them to enjoy themselves. He said their time had come. He said pressure is good, we need more.

  126. Oo Bac and Clichy doubling up on the Right.

Hadn’t planned that one out on the blackboard but we’ll take it

  127. I dunno Limpar, according to dem le grove acid heads diaby is shite, Rvp is crocked, Denilson passes sideways and falls over, there’s no leader, no grit or steel, no 7′ CB, no 8′ DM, Dudu can’t be relied on, Wenger is French, Song is African, AA is God and Ram his deputy but can’t do it alone.

I wonder if Gallas has been practicing for that Mr. Scurvy.

  128. In fairness to them they are spot on about Wenger and Song.

  129. FG,

Interesting take on the DCM position.

I think Wenger was deeply impressed with Barca last season. They decided on pretty much one formation – and played the game on their terms, to suit their style, and never budged from that even when down to 10 men in the 93rd min against the chavs.

I think we were a little too smart for our own good when we started tinkering with formations and tactics. It goes against our style of play. This is what Benitez does. We should play our own game and impose ourselves on others and let them worry about us. Our own game is good enough.

We only have one natural DCM to my mind and that’s Song. I think we need another and the failed bids for Alonso and Melo would suggest the manager might think so too. Coquelin and Ramsey are a little short to my mind. And we’ve already seen what happens when we gambled on both Denny (overused) and Diaby (injury prone) last season. We were left short. Given that we’ve not replaced Ade, nor Flam/Diarra/Gilberto with a specialist DCM – I still think were at least 2 players short. We’ve been short for a number of seasons now. Must we be short again, now that we have money in the bank? Is it necessary to take the risk again, given how prone we are to injury? Both Cesc and AA think we need more players too – so I’d be really disappointed if were not active in the transfer market.

  130. @ZP… I had thought that when watching the first match, but it’s good practice regardless because you know ManU will try to muscle us off our game.

We’ve got the momentum coming in. We’ve got the confidence. Burnley took them – we should be looking to make a statement…oooh just think of the papers on Sunday if we blew them out like 4-1 or something. Oh ho…watch the pundits run back to the chalkboard then!

  131. Lol…Limpar

  132. Goodness gracious me, London is full to the brim of Scotsmen. What a to do. This is simply deplorable.

So tonight we are going to shove their Scottish arse pipes back up their arses and send them, frocks an all, back where they came from. Northern Ireland mostly but some to Glasgow.

    ….Arsenal…..

  133. Some of these fellows have been frightening old ladies on the tube by lifting their skirts. Well I say frighten, the ladies I saw giggled hysterically. They just pointed at the offending anatomy and muttered something which sounded like ‘didn’t know they could be that small’ in between wheezes.

One brazen old lady then jumped up lifted her skirt and said toothlessly ‘want sham of ish shan?’….the Scotsmen ran off leaving two cans of superstrength lager, half a plastic bottle of Irn-Bru and some Scottish arse-pipes which let out a reedy squeak when someone trod on them in the kerfuffle.

    ….Arsenal….

  134. Seen many scotch eggs around?

  135. Naaah, Fortnum and Mason is the last place they would have been.

  136. I wonder where they get their hampers from in Glasgow.

  137. @ Joe

Is Alonso a specialist DCM? And Barca’s midfield is stuffed with players who can defend as well as attack. Song is such a player, as is Denilson.

Wenger has certainly been looking for AN experienced midfielder for two or three seasons – not a specialist DCM. (He has just ruled out a bid for Matuidi, btw.) He has also been intending to play Diaby at CM for three seasons. Which would suggest that he does think he can do the job – as defined by Arsene. He has also mentioned playing Nasri in that position. Those are not the actions of a man who thinks we have to have a specialist DM.

You bring up Denilson’s development last year, but that actually backs up my point – Denilson is an all-rounder who played a more defensive role last year because that was what AW required. He’s obviously satisfied with Denilson because he is a regular starter. If Wenger feels that no-one in the squad could replicate Song’s style, he is more likely to change the formation or the tactics than to buy a player.

He paid £10 million for Vermaelen early on in the transfer window. If a specialist holding player or DCM or whatever was a priority, I think he would have bought one by now, or at least be negotiating. (We would have heard – the days of signings coming out of the blue seem to be in the past, sadly.)

Also, anything can happen re injuries etc, but you can’t just keep buying players for cover. And the squad is bigger numerically and in terms of experience than last year. I don’t see it as that much of a gamble.

Regarding your other comments, I was trying to imagine how Arsene thinks and guess what he will do – I guess you’re the expert on what you think and what you would do in his position!

  138. Hamperdon Park?

  139. RVP and Arshavin to score tonight and Song to top it off!

  140. I confess a soft spot for Celtic, and Glasgow, although my overseas heart is more London. Oh damn, I know I know, but what’s a fellow to do really? Thing is, you see, Glasgow are twinned with our second city Bulawayo, and oh lord, the top football team there (my team) is called … Highlanders (even though Bulawayo so flat people call it ‘skies’ because you can see so much sky). That’s why when Pz said 5-1 and Limpar maybe said 7-1, I countered with 4-1, my note of sympathy. But, hell, priorities … Come on The Arsenal.

  141. Zimpaul, you like Glasgow? You must have a big heart

  142. Although, I did try that stuff, haggis, gulp, and thought long and hard about my sympathies. It is not really food in the literal sense – is it?

Mind you I popped in a pub, and asked for the best Scotch I knew (Oban) and the guvnor said ‘crap’, try a real whisky (un-nameable), 55%, lethal, after a few (I take doubles, no ice or water) my daughter had to lead me away before things got seriously out of hand.

  143. Poor Frank. Only out for the day? You’ll be back in your asylum before kick off suitably sedated!

  144. Out of friendship for you, ZimPaul, I’ll settle for a compromise of 4-0. What do you say?

  145. The streets of Glasgow … I was led astray, honest, it wasn’t my fault. I was a visitor! They plied me with strong liquor and asked me to sing, after they had sung in some foreign language. There no greater flattery for an African. I sang.

  146. Pz, deal friend. 4-0 it is, and their tails between their legs *under their kilts obviously.

  147. I was in a pub in Edinburgh, which is near Galsgow I believe, during a Cricket World Cup.

We were playing the Aussies so I went into a pub to watch the match and asked a bloke at the bar who was winning. “We are”, he said.

Contented, I turned to the screen and saw that the Aussies were absolutely stuffing us.

It was the first time that I had my eyes opened to the fact that we are not one nation. 8-0 sounds alright to me.

    ARSENAL!ARSENAL!ARSENAL!

  148. That is, from a cricket perspective, a disgrace. Every cricket fan in the world outside of some distant corner or other knows you support ANY team against the Aussies. It’s the principle.

I thought England did pretty well for the Ashes. Looked like they had cracked without resort to their ‘backs against the wall and a plucky draw against all odds’ cricket psychology. Can only be the influence of the Zimbabwean at the helm.

  149. If you unpack the Scots and Irish cricket teams you’ll find every nation (including a Zimbabwean opening bat) and only the odd token Scot and Irish. Never mind their names start with Mc … they are from abroad. Maybe that’s why.

  150. That would be true anywhere but Scotland I believe. They have never forgeven us for bailing out their nation when they bankrupted temselve on a vainglorious attempt to build an empire.

Mind you, good engineers, your Scots. Also very good men to have at your side with the bayonet when the Hun comes calling again.

  151. ‘temselve’ is Anglo Irish for ‘themselves’ obviously.

  152. No the Scottish hate us English, and we hate the sweaty socks. Alot of history of blood shed between us has caused the relationship we now have with them.

  153. Tough start to the season. 5 tough games (Pompey excepted) in 15 days. Also the draw is very much against Arsenal with only 3 days between Everton and Celtic away and 3 days to MU away (and MU have no midweek game).
For midfielders and forwards 5 games of such intensity in 15 days is not on. The rotation of the last few days suggests that AA, RvP and Denilson will be rested tonight. Although AA has been regularly taken off early in the first few games including last Saturday.
Also bear in mind that in last years qualifying game against FC Twente (away) AW was happy to start Ramsey.

The pre-season and games so far have all indicated that AW will play 2 defensive midfielders in difficult away games (Song and Denilson) and 1 DM at home. This suggests that Denilson will be rested tonight, leaving a starting midfield of Diaby, Ramsey and Song. Forwards of AA, Eduardo and Bendtner (pull AA if leading after 45 or 60 mins).
I’d expect Almunia, Clichy, TV, Gallas and Sagna to all start.

    Joe/Fungunner
Re the end of the transfer window. 4 Central midfielders + Song in reserve is ample. 9 midfielders needs to be looked at:
Cesc, Nasri, Rosicky, Diaby (first line attacking Mids)
    Denilson, Song (first line DM’s)
Ramsay, Merida, Wilshere (young up and comers, but all attacking – Ramsay is definitely not a DM)
With Song away, there is a big risk if Denilson is injured and also AW is playing 2 DM’s in tough away games. However, you remember that he did trial Nasri in the role a couple of times last season, so I think the only question is whether AW was happy with Nasri’s performance in the position. If not fully happy with him then he may go for a Matuidi type. (Note: Denilson has always been (since the age of 11) a DM – he has attacking skills but is first and foremost a DM)

    Re forwards:
RvP, AA, Eduardo (first choice forwards)
    Bendtner, Walcott, Vela (2nd line)
Bearing in mind height deficiencies there is a good argument to bring in a Chamakh type, but that will be last minute if Bordeuax relent for a low price. I’m also interested to follow whether Kalou signs for a contract extension. He would fit well with the 433 formation and has had only limited opportunities with Chelsea.

AW and his scouts have 4 or 5 potential players lined up in every position, with a lot of emphasis on where players stand with their contracts (especially 2 and 1 yr remaining). Most of these players are not in the media spotlight so expect a surprise.

  154. James, James. Oh my, it is indeed a sad day, David Murray has announced his resignation from Rangers, never again will I be able to name drop for you about the directors box.

Last time I was there I shared the box with Alex Ferguson, Bobby Robson, John Motson, Hows that for name dropping.

Sad sad day, My friend I am devastated. LOL

And Duke we don’t hate the Scots, we just resent the rubbish they send down to Westminster.

Now back to football Song and Diaby will make interesting watching tonight. Will be interesting to see who Arsene subs if we score a couple.

The weekend looms and old red nose will be watching no doubt.

  155. Song Rights Ltd

My boss plied me with J&B. He wouldn’t stop. I’m scared of him. I’m too much of a pussy to say no. Now I’m fücked. I want things to happen. I want to be awake for the match.

  156. And I’ve started plieing myself with Gin, hour and a bit till kick off, no probs staying awake here. Can’t bloody wait!

    GOOOO ON THE BOYS!

  157. Wish someone would ply me with J&B. Or Gin for that matter.

I think some cans of Guiness are in order. *checks watch* Right, plenty of time to get to the offy and back.

    Arrrrrrrrsenal

  158. Finished making the pasties. in the oven now, ready just in time for kick off with a nice Cote de Rhone.

  159. Song Rights Ltd

    Gin straight?

J&B is smooth. It mixes with everything. I could drink turpentine with J&B and it would taste like turpentade. Mmmm turpentade. I’m going to make it. It, the match – not turpentade.

  160. this is not Scotland vs England guys. This is the MIGHTY ARSENAL playing. I’m not English but I support Arsenal and I don’t care about your problems with each other.

  161. Prawn pasties?

  162. Even better, Pz. Proper pasties are made with skirt.

Which for the sake of the filthy minded amongst you is actually a cut of beef.

  163. Wow consolsbob, that sounds like a neat way to enjoy the game.

  164. What could be better Alex?

    Arsenal, a pasty, good wine…

  165. Song Rights Ltd

Prawn pasties. It’s something out of La Grande Bouffe. Appropriate for club level orgies. You just need a servant boy with a receptacle for repeats. Prawn pasty will inevitably repeat. He’ll be there to catch it.

  166. HAhahaaa….he said turpentade…lol.

  167. I think this sentence needs to be marked with some sort of moment of appreciation or something…

“Proper pasties are made with skirt.”

    Wow…

  168. Team news
    Eduardo Bendtner Eboue
    Diaby Song Denilson
    Clichy TV Gallas Sagna
    Almunia

  169. Song Rights Ltd

0 results for “turpentade” on google = maximum SEO. There’s a killing to be made – with turpentade.

  170. I refer Axis to my previous post but one.

  171. Thanks jbh. Interesting midfield.

  172. jbh from where did you get the team news?

  173. I was about to ask the same question to jbh.

  174. Eboue as right sided forward! Now that is news.

  175. I think it’s on Uefa.com and I can confirm it. Arshavin and Van persie on the bench so is Ramsey

  176. Eboue on the right? You serious, my God, why?

  177. Maybe he’s going for a hatrick of penalties in one game, the cheat.

  178. Actually this line-up surprises me a little because Wenger said this tie is more important than the United game and then he leaves out Arshavin and Van Persie. But they might need a breather or he sees the game as good as won and rests them for Saturday

  179. Song Rights Ltd

That’s not a team for fainthearts. Baby, it’ll blow your mind!

  180. Fuck knows what he’s playing at, just hope he’s not getting complacent with our season again. If it works then hat’s off to him but shit I’d rather he didn’t play games like this.

Anyone confirm this line up by the way?

  181. Pauley, that is hardly a weak starting 11. I dont know what you are concerned about.

  182. pauley its on Uefa.com. I think the clubs must tell uefa the line-up an´hour prior to kick-off

  183. Song Rights Ltd

It’s on bbc. Only Diaby makes up the front three instead of Eboue…which actually makes a bit moe sense.

  184. What is the alarm?

Eduardo and Bendther up front. Solid midfiels and first choice defence.

Oh, is it because AA isn’t playing? This is a team game, remember?

  185. Eboue up front was what was concerning me Alex, but if it’s Diaby then I’m ok now. I’ll go get myself a refill.

  186. Song Rights Ltd

Mohammad and Jesus #2 got together in Leningrad back in ’83, remember. Adopted an infant son from an orphanage. Eschewed traditional schooling; told their son loads of sexist jokes. Arshavin was the product.

  187. Eboue starting today would cup tie him in the champs league. It could be an indication that he will stay on with us this season.

  188. I do hope you’re not going to hog the pasties, Consolsbob.

    ***

Good for Eboue – glad he’s getting a start. He’ll suit a game like this

    ****
    @ jbh

I appreciate you chiming in, though I’d have to disagree slightly about Denilson – I understood that he was a “volante” and starting attacks was also part of the job description?
However I’m a bit depressed by the fact that you don’t seem to have understood my point.

Anyway, time to get excited!!!! Go Gunners!!!!!

  189. Senderos has consistently not been named in the squad for PL games as well as CL games. Though he is training with the rest of the team, it seems highly likely that he will move on in the next week.

  190. Quite predictable, I was hoping Eboue gets a start today. RVP could do well with a rest, given the upcoming game on saturday. And Bendtner has a good chance to show what he can do upfront. I reckon, Dudu and Diaby on the left, will be the key today.

    EBOUE!!!!!!!!

  191. Good point, Alex at 7:20pm

  192. it’s actually a 4-4-2

    edu and niki up front

  193. Wenger said ages ago that Eboue isn’t leaving.

  194. True, Pz. He did.

  195. Eboue seems like hes playing up front.hes def playing in front of Diaby. Hopefuly we can get a goal soon, and then maybe we’ll get to see young wilshere!

  196. Not a dive at all.

  197. then again it seems like his foot got stuck on the ground. not a dive but lucky any way! Allright bring on little willie!

  198. Fukin el eds why do a fukin Ronaldo

  199. Is that Willie Gallas? He’s due a goal, it’s been 28 minutes

  200. i guess willie is taken, though gallas is not really little. i was talking abt Wilshere, though 28 mins might be jumping the gun a bit.

  201. We dont need to cheat to beat these jocks.

  202. We’re not beating them by cheating, we’re beating them because we are vastly superior.

  203. So we’re sloppy and they are working hard??? Fucking commentators.

  204. gladi

  205. Jesus, we really need to score a second “fairer” goal to shut these idiots up. They’d have shut up about it after the penalty if someone else had taken it.

  206. excuse me, glad i don’t have the same commentators.

  207. Looks like we’re still playing the 4-3-3 with Eboue out of aallll our vaunted offensive replacements playing in the top 3. He isn’t doing too badly either!

  208. Their shit, we know they are shit , thats why we are sloppy.

  209. Great break by Eboue and what a shot from EDS on the end of it.
FWIW I think having a striker well versed in the ‘dark arts’ can be a bonus as defenders will give him that extra couple of inches of space if they’re scared of conceding free kicks and penalties. I don’t mean out and out cheating like that practised by Man U and chelsea of course.

  210. Not too sloppy but missing abit of creativity.

I would hope that Diaby and Denilson might create a bit more in the second half. Three or four screamers might shut the commentaters up.

  211. We have been superior by miles over the two legs. Celtic haven’t had a sniff of a chance in this match and yet all we will hear is how all the goals were unlucky for Celtic and how they deserved more out of this tie.

I agree with Vince, we need a nice cracker of a goal in open play to shut up some of the f*ckwit commentators. Fergie is watching us from the stands, it will be nice to shut him up as well.

Bendtner really should have scored with that last header before half time.

  212. It’s too easy to start believing we are sloppy and ignoring all the excellent stuff we do when the commentators go on and on saying it and making a fuss over the mistakes.
Just now Nic won a tackle and he said how well the Celtic player did. He did well to lose the tackle? Idiots.
Main plus again tonight is how good TV5 looks.

  213. He catches his right foot slightly in the angle they are refusing to slow.

lol @ Duke. Imagine how Manu supporters must have felt everytime the lesser Ronaldo went for the dive.

Everyone has been quite brilliant. Eboue has been quite good going forward, along with the fullbacks. We could have been 2-3 up, if Bendtner and Eduardo had been a bit more clinical.

  214. Dudu you beauty now that’s winning ugly.. only 23 more goals for you this season..

    Go on my son..

  215. What are you guys talking about? We’ve been creative enough. More direct play, with all the crosses coming in. We’ve had 2-3 good chances to score, that suggests anything but a lack of creativity.

  216. To be fair to Eds though he was probably expecting the keeper to hit him and just went down anyway, so it wasnt like a Ronaldo dive in the slightest.

  217. What Ateeb says.

  218. this is the perfect match for Rednose Wino to watch, considering it shows him nothing aboout RvP Arsha and Cesc..

  219. Song Rights Ltd

We’ve been decent. It’s an unorthodox 11, but I love Eboue in that AM/CF position. We’ve dominated this tie completely – if the goals hadn’t come from fortunate or nefarious means, they’d have arrived minutes late thanks to our brilliance.

  220. The first 15 minutes our passing and movement was so good that I saw Maloney and Brown look dazed as we broke past them at will.

  221. Song Rights Ltd

    later…

  222. No, there is a lack in midfield, perhaps a lack of directness might be more accurate.

It hardly matters, I just like to see us excel. If we did that we would score for fun against this team.

  223. Wenger played eboue as a striker! i definitely don’t know what Arsene Knows..hehe

Dudu is going to score a lot of goals this season. Bring it!

  224. Little spell on the right wing for EDS I think. Sharpen up that chocolate leg!!

  225. I agree with big Al, Eboue has been quite good.

Add Rosicky to that list, Kitchen Sink.

Let’s all turn a blind eye to the dive conspiracy. I mean it wasn’t as bad as that fuc*** Babel’s dive against us.

    Eduardo!!! Another chance…….

  226. Fuck the commentators, I watch with radiohead playing in the background…coz it’s not as depressing.

  227. lol duke

  228. eboue!!

  229. James must be in tears right now. Hahaha……

  230. Nic, Diaby & Eboue – what a move . All 3 have had some flak from the D&G that makes the goal all the sweeter.

  231. Let’s not purport that old “Radiohead are depressing” myth, it’s as outdated and false as saying we play boring football.

  232. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

  233. AA copied Eboue there!

  234. Beautiful Beautiful football! I’ll take some more please!

  235. MOTM – Denilson

    any takers…..

  236. anurag – he usually is for me, but Eboue had a great one too. And TV has been cool and Song worked hard as well.

  237. In all my 128 years of following Association Soccer (or Footie as the younguns like to call it) I have never seen a more disgusting, despicable displap from a baby eating, virgin sacrificing, litter throwing beastly forein person than what I did witness tonight… Of course I am referring to that heinous cheating dive from Eduardo, perpitrated on those honest as the day is long, not at all cheating by fouling, manhandling etc Celtic…

    Oh for shame….

  238. spike
    loool

  239. Spike is right.

We need more honest, English players in the side like Stevie Gerrard…er, is that right?

  240. Sharp play from us in the second half. Celtic had only 1 shot on target all night and that was Donati’s volley at full stretch at the very end.

TV and Gallas were amazing again. Their reading of the game is very good. Eboue and Denilson both had good games as did Song. Now to topple the apple cart of united. Onwards and upwards.

  241. Hey FG!

I know I should expect all this negative bile aimed at us, but FFS! Even before the penalty, the twats on ITV were goin on and on about unrelated shite about us losing at home a few times last season and there being more French players in our team than British, etc ad effin nauseum!

Then after the pen, these gimps are goin over it time and again, completely over looking the blatant fouling and general thuggery of these Celtic honerst pros!

They are even suggesgting FIFA and the PFA should get involved! Micheal Owen was almost cannonised for diving to get a pen for England vs Argentina and Stevie Me just loves a good swallow dive.

Awww fuck em all to hades!

  242. LOL Spike,

Watching townsend and dogleash bang on about it now!

Shut up! talk about eboue’s and arsh’s goals for a bit, you’re running out of airtime!

  243. And yes, Gallas and Vermeallen were brilliant again. Denilson and Song had great games and the general work rate and defensive play by the whole team was great to see.

Eboue played really well and the whole move for his goal was just excellent.

  244. We conceded a goal at the last minute, how typical that is!

It was a comfortable win for us and everyone did very well. I hope Ramsey is ok for saturday.

  245. good summary spike, you should take townsend’s job

  246. Dan;

I switched ITV off as soon as the final whistle went! Bring it on, I remember the stick Pires got, and we ended up winning the league that year!

  247. Too right Spike – f*ck them all to Hades and back via Slough.

  248. That was a good game to win – like the goalless draws but with goals. We can be a bit cautious and contained and strike when it suits us, like cobras. Sorry I’m a bit pissed.

  249. To hear Dogleish go on and on about this foreign diving problem, what a wanker! The fuc#@r practically wrote the book on diving within the English game and that’s before we even had any foreigners.

  250. Andy Townsend has somehow been elevated from average clogging pseudo Irishman to an authority on all things football…. How the fook did that happen?

During a World Cup, Ruud Gullit was trying to explain why Spain sometimes dont make it in tournaments due to the fact Spain is quite disperate due to factions; Catalan, Basque, etc when Townsend jumps in shouting “I aint avin that, they just dont fancy it, dont like it up em, beegorra”

  251. FG; Hahahaha!! Nice

  252. Pauley,

You might be right. Maybe wait until Citeh.

I’m at least on the mark with tonight’s

    RESULTTTTTT!

  253. spike

I enjoyed their relentless badgering of Eduardo .. Suggestions that Wenger should invite him for a cup of tea and a good talking too.. Then they realized Wenger probably won’t give a F*** what they say.. So they suggest the F.A should give Dudu a scolding instead..

Strange how not many cared when fake Ronaldo was scoring 12 penalties and diving for pearls..

I have a feeling old Red nose is a little worried..

    ___Come on YE Arshenal___

  254. no one deserves slough FG..except maybe andy townsend the ugly twat,

I agree, it was very controlled and we took our chances well! apart form the goal celtic looked weak, cobra pray.

  255. jim beglan openly saying that aurelio should have fouled theo at all cost even pick up a yelloww!

but when its arsenal the pfa and fifa should get involved

    what a joke!

kenny daglish went out of his way to mention any foreign diver he could think of, i was thinking of when rooney dived against us to end our 49 run. even stevie ‘phil collins’ gerrrad against athletico last season.

  256. Vaudeville Vermaelen Villain was my thriller of the night ..

They say a pundits mind, would explode from one thought of his memory..

  257. Finally we can go out and buy another player?

  258. Well, I am glad the media will now forget their crocodile tears and fake sympathy for Eduardo. No more of this “Oh its sooo great he is playing again” Or this corker from Beglin tonight; “And Tiny Taylor will be as happy as anyone Eduardo is playing again.” Yeah, of course, you wanker! And as we all know, breaking a player’s leg is no where near as bad as diving.

  259. Sure Sixtay we can. Who do you recommend? Will you give your usual 5 options!?

  260. Sixtay – I imagine arsene’s on the phone right now calling in reinforcements following that dismal display

  261. Spike

    Hypocrites, the lot of them.

  262. Last week it was Strachan on Sky trying to suggest Arsenal did not deserve the 1st leg win, now this week, its all down to that nasty foreign person, diving.

Paul Merson makes us favourites to beat United on Saturday! Way hey! Thats the spirit Merse!

  263. We were’nt great but we were’nt bad either and we were always better than that lot. We hardly got out of second gear first half to be fair.

Not sure I’d want to start with the same team Saturday but it was nice to be able to rotate and still come through relatively comfortably.

    Job done!

  264. I live in Slough you fuckers, don’t send them my way!

  265. I’m furious, if Gerrard, Rooney or even Drogba (I won’t even bring Fat Frank into it) had won that penalty they would all be praising him for his ability. What about Babel 2 seasons ago? ITV are a disgrace, that they have even been allowed to bid for football coverage after the damage they caused to the lower leagues says a great deal about the people that run football in this country.

  266. I call that strength in depth. I just wish Bendtner had scored – he worked his socks off.

Btw Maria, if you’re reading, you can have Carlos all to yourself now. It’s Tommy V for me!

  267. Spike – If Merson is tipping us I’m worried.

  268. I saw Gazidis on the blower as soon as Eduardo dived to con the wholesome, no nonsense pure as a baby lamb Celtic to get the 1st goal. In fact, I am sure Gazidis signalled to Eduardo to dive, so he could sign all the players that Wenger simply refuses to.

  269. Wilshere and Ramsey slotted in beautifully as well. I love us. We’re lovely.

  270. Merson is bi-polar, he was writing us off pre-season, pay no heed, just makes a change he is tipping us. And to swing it in our favour, I am going to put Rooney and Vidic in my dream team!

  271. bad news vince,

townsend’s being fucked though brentford as we speak, you have about 15mins to vacate.

  272. I imagine, Arshavin, Robin and Cesc will start on Saturday and if not Cesc, then Diaby. And, we will have Tomas on the bench too! How fookin great is that???

  273. Wilshere and Ramsey again showed that they have prodigious talent. They are way ahead in development to most of their peers. Ramsey is a brilliant mix of defence and attack and Wilshere’s first touch and vision is almost divine.

  274. spike I saw Roro skipping whilst jogging with the team ..oh the joy he is yet to bring.. he’s easily as good as arshavin..

  275. @ Alex
spot on about Ramsey and Wilshere – very special players.
I was so happy for Eboue as well. One of the loveliest aspects of all the loveliness of the season so far is how much fun the squad are having.

  276. Since when was Rosicky Roro?

  277. Roro? a new signing already?

Is there a youtube clip of his best bits?

  278. I will gladly accept Tomas, Supa Tom, Rosicky, Rozza, TR7, but Roro???

  279. he is the Manga poster boy..

  280. its all in the hair..

  281. Tomorrow’s Sun Headline;

Hang you Ed in Shame Arsenal!

    The Telegraph;

Gallant Honest Celts undone by Underhand foreign Rascals

  282. FG-@10:06

Your right mate, it was a shame that Bendtner didn’t score but then he ain’t much likely to until he finds a first touch worth a shit! I like his effort, really I do but his ball control is shocking at times and breaks down a lot of good moves.

Having said that his back heel to Diaby that set up Eboue’s goal was class. He’s young so hopefully it’ll come.

  283. Dan I’m a big fan of your films here’s one for you of the lil Mozart in arsenal supreme..

  284. Bendtner’s 1st touch is good, if anything, he just needs to add consistency, but that will come, he is still a young player. Lets not resort to lazy assed digs now, please!

But Theo and Cesc were just fookin anonymous tonight, I mean, what the hell did they do? Nuffin, thats wot.

  285. And the least said about nasri, the better, if you ask me.

  286. Spike,

There is a fat chance that the Sun headline is going to be exactly that. Can see the Daily Wail screaming ‘Arsenal stoop to conquer.’

  287. Bendtner’s 1st touch is good, if anything, he just needs to add consistency, but that will come, he is still a young player. Lets not resort to lazy assed digs now, please!

    Well said, Spike.

I am so impressed by the guy’s defensive work, as well.

  288. Pauley, shame we don’t have you in the dressing room, you’re obviously the nurturing, man manager type.

Nice clip KS looking forward to part 2. he’s gonna bring so much quality on his return, and experience.

  289. Gallas Brilliant again. The leader on the pitch

Solid if unspectacular performance, job done

But very sad about Eddy”s dive.Come on Eddy you are better than that.Leave the diving to Drogba,Gerrard and Rooney

    Bendtner was poor.

Now Arsene go and buy the CH and striker we need

  290. Not a lazy arse dig Spike, the guys first touch is way behind the quality of players around him. Ok so he’s young, I take that into account, but you can’t go saying it’s a good 1st touch surely. Consistency? Maybe that’s partly it but I’d be being generous.

Anyway we got through comfortably so let’s agree to disagree and enjoy the win.

  291. Bendtner’s 1st touch v Everton helped him set up Cesc to square to Denilson for the all improtant opening goal.

Thats just 1 example. Aint gonna get into it with you. I think think his touch is class, better than Ade’s by some distance and he is what? 4 or 5 years younger.

Fun Gunner; Yeah, his defensive play is fantastic, the whole team’s pressing off the ball is great to see.

  292. Spike I think you have those headlines spot on. I was actually thinking that myself.

It appears now that Arsenal are the only team in the history of football to have had a player go down easily.

  293. Ooh, double think!

  294. Oh and I thought Eboue was fantastic tonight. When he got into those central positions and ran at Celtic they had little answer.

  295. ML;

Ha! Yes mate. Never before in the history of sports, has one incident done soooo much to create bedlam, we are surely on the road to Soddem and Gammorah now. (Isnt that the name of Cashley Coles lawyers?) Or is it Soddem and Gimmemorrah?

  296. I really really hope Wenger comes out and says ” I didnt see it”

Please please Mr W, do it! You know it makes sense!

  297. With a sly smirk on his face

  298. Oh, by the way, the drag back and back heel wasn’t by Denilson, it was by Ronaldinho.

  299. Gallas is our real Captain

Hate to be nit picker but in the 4 games so far we have fallen asleep in the final minute in 2 games and conceded a goal.It didnt matter but remember we did the same v Villa, sperz and Liverpool last season when 6 pts were dropped.Concentrate till the final whistle

Pluses tonight: Gallas,TV Eboue and Jack(great cameo)

Minuses: Diaby,Bendtner and Eduardo( for that DIVE)

  300. SSN Headlines;

Celtic unhappy with penalty, (pre)judge for your self, as we have the camera angles that make it look like no contact was there whatsoever.

  301. Must be quite embarrassing having nits. Feel for you dude.

  302. Muppet;

Denilson was clearly trying to square the ball to no one in particular, but it got caught under his feet and it squirmed off his boot and slipped behind him, flukerly, obviously.

  303. I am fooking sure, who ever writes the copy for the SSN anchors (thats anchors) must be a spud.

  304. Can someone tell me where Diaby was playing tonight?

I still cannot work it out.

  305. SSN Pole:

Should eduardo be deported for his heinous crime against football?

    YES

    DEFINITELY

I WOULD BE TOO GOOD FOR HIM (bring back the death penalty)

  306. Sorry Poll

  307. Thats what I love about the media over here. They are soooo fair and balanced. They give every incident the same exposure and let natural justice run its course.

Ahem, Nurse! I think my medication needs topping up.

  308. If I do not get answers this time, there will be trouble!

Where was Diaby playing tonight peoples?

  309. In an advanced inside left, central forward role.

  310. I’m just back from the game in time to catch the highlights on ITV – the hypocrisy knows no bounds. Celtic were never going to get anything out of the game regardless of how the first goal came about. I’m sick of us playing by the rules while the likes of Rooney and Gerrard have license to cheat. They can wring their hands until they fall off for all I care. I prefer it when they hate us and we can stick it to them with our results.

GIORC – they only let in those goals so people who feel the need have something to moan about. We had 10 players on the pitch at the time and the game was dead and buried. So the jocks had something to celebrate on the way home. So what? It’s a long way back to Glasgow and the Europa league.

  311. Mean Lean, he looked like he was in the midfield from where I was sitting. And didn’t Eboue do well? He was one of the stars of the night for me along with Denilson and TV.

  312. Gallas is our real Captain

If Utd get a dodgy pen on sat we will go mad.Diving is cheating whether its an Arsenal player or an opposition player. What eddy did was cheat

    ML was Diaby playing tonight?

  313. Owen dived against Argentina in 98 he was called a genious. Rooney dived last year and they made an excuse for him they said he learned it from foreign players. How Celtic were unlucky I just have no idea they were well beaten over 2 legs so how is that? and the line i was waiting for ” We shall see what Arsenal are made of next week when they face Manure” Who care we’ll show them.
Credit to Mowbary brushed any talk over the penalty decision aside and just admitted they were beaten by a better side.

  314. Wenger;
“Look, we had a penalty against us two years ago in the quarter-final of the Champions League at Liverpool that made the difference when Babel dived, nobody ever apologised to us. That was a blatant dive.”

    Loovens
“You can see from the reaction of the boys, they were close to it and if it stayed 0-0 you stay in the game.

“I don’t think he even speaks English so there was no point talking to him. It is very disappointing bit that is football.”
    —————————————-

Nice bit of foreigner bashing, implying he doesnt speak da lingo, he is learning quickly this Loovens fella.

  315. Actually, on reflection, I don’t think it was a dive Eduardo’s foot just got caught under Boruc’s rather substantive midriff!

  316. Gallas; A dive against us??? What? Havent we had enough against us already for you?

Rooney, Ronaldo, Babel, not to mention the penallties NOT given to us.

As Passenal said, the hypocrisy is staggering but so so predictable. What else do you expect when, after 5 minutes all the commentator can focus on is the number of French men in our team

  317. GIORC – except it isn’t unless it is a dirty cheating foreigner who plays for Arsenal. When the pundits start being even handed in their criticism of ‘cheating’, I’ll join you on that high horse of yours.

  318. You just have to look at Gallas being lambasted for NOT touching Utaka on Saturday! Even after it was PROVEN there was no contact, the media were full of Utaka’s indignation about the foul, how Gallas had ADMITTED it to him.

    Un-fookin-believable

  319. I bet there was some contact that is usually enough for the expert pundits to say its a stick on pem. “Well, there was contact and thats all the encouragement you need to go down in the box.”

  320. Thank you guys,

I thought that might be the case, he just looked very advanced at many times during the game.

Agreed Passenal. Eboue, Denilson and TV were great again. I’d have to add Gallas to that collection also.

  321. Stick on Perm or stick on pen?

    Could go either way.

  322. Here is the proof the darling of english football at it against the spuds

  323. Here is another

  324. Whatever happened to “having every right to go down?”

  325. To hell with you, FunGunner! I took Thomas Vermaelen months ago.

  326. Denilson was brilliant tonight. How long will I have to wait before someone suggests he be dropped?

  327. It’s always extra satisfying when Eboue scores.

  328. That second Rooney dive was shocking

  329. Arshavin also was excellent when he came on. We ought to have saved him for Saturday. What are you doing Wenger?

  330. Pz

Or “rested”. That’s the usual code, isn’t it? ;)

To hell with you, FunGunner! I took Thomas Vermaelen months ago.

Possession is nine tenths of the law and right now he is tied up in my understairs cupboard so ner. Anyway, I thought you had laid claim to Barazite, Mr Greedy????

  331. @ Mean Lean

I know. Makes you want to start a course, or at least a diving module, doesn’t it?

  332. The Express headline “Dive into the money” as if the shameful events of what happened at Upton Park is not big enough news for them. using Eduardo to cover up the Hooligans. Well FIFA won’t be fooled, forget about hosting the world cup.

  333. I don’t hear the calls for him to be banned or for FIFA or the FA to investigate on either of those clips.

  334. Pz,

haha. Denilsion’s next side pass will surely come in time.

It’s interesting to read through the Arsenal message boards and blogs after this match. Not only because of Eduardo’s unforgivable, truely horrible act of sin against humanity. But look at the reviews Eboue, Denilsion or Diaby are getting. They begin with either “I have to say” or “I have to admit” and usually end with “though”.

  335. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE..

  336. notlager – they may have been slow on the uptake, but those players are teaching those IKB’s not to be so quick to judge. It won’t stop them doing it to the next group of youngsters coming through though

  337. Celtic star Donati: “Eduardo should be banned” Mirror Football

So in retrospective should Jarosik be banned as well because he dove to set up Nakamura’s winner vs. Man U 3 years ago?

    f*cking predictable hypocrites

  338. So Capello was here to watch Dudu..

    the only darkness is fear..

  339. I was just reminded of the incident when one of the Celtic players decided to have a little dig at Jack Wilshere off the ball. It was good to see Denilson stand up for his team mate, even if it did cost him a card.

  340. Anyone notice the cheating Celtic fan sitting amongst the Arsenal crowd shining a laser pen in Eduardo’s eyes when he was taking the penalty?

  341. Just one question, did anyone see what Eboue had written on his sweat top under his shirt?
Hope it said something like, “feck you Le Grove and the rest.”

  342. Brown was a bit of a thug throughout the game and tried to intimidate Denilson I think Brown will not survive one day where Denilson grew up, one of the toughest neighborhoods in Sao Paolo Brazil.

  343. Deni fears no one

He displays tremendous passion (for any age), a unique intensity almost the opposite to the rest of the team, in that the more warn down and battered his body gets the easier it is for him to pull out his moments of genius..

nice recap Passenal denilson’s desire is ravenous .. I forget which match it was last season but he was pretty aggressive pushing the ref around..

  344. Did not like Eduardo’s dive one bit, I take pride in the fact that Arsenal is not a team of divers! And since I don’t live in England, we don’t get all the hypocrisy here and can actually form our own opinions. Dudu isn’t my favourite anymore, a list that goes something to the tune of:

    Denilson
Arshavin (Love how he called no foul v Portsmouth)

    some distance later

    Cesc
    Dudu

Everybody else (although Song, TV, and Bendtner really are starting to win me over)

Screw the list, I just love Arsenal!!!!

  345. Couple of thoughts after coming back.
Team: First choice back 5, Eduardo, then the rest form the 5 top D&G (troll) targets of venom. Well done that they all performed so well.

Injuries: Central midfielders out (Cesc, Nasri, Ramsey). Just coming back (Rosicky?, Diaby)
Injury curse again coming in one area.

Only fully fit midfielders (Denilson, Song, Merida, Wilshere).
Hope that they are foxing re Cesc, and that Diaby can play 3 games in a week.

  346. Celtic kept going and fair play to them for that, but their exuberant attitude towards getting ‘stuck in’ was nothing to applaud, it’s outdated and ugly.

Eboue was on a mission today, and made some really amazing touches and flick ons to gain space, really happy to see him enjoy his football like he was today.

  347. Must be mistaking Eddy for the new houseboy.

  348. Why thank you FG….wasn’t aware however that you liked abit of ‘rough’lol Pz did claim TV many moons ago btw so go for Gallas I say!!!

  349. Celtic, bar their manager, has gone abit hysterical reacting to the penalty. Understandable though.

  350. Where were those f*cking commentators and media taking the moral high ground when Ronaldo was diving twice between every freaking step-over?

Not condoning diving but sometimes it’s very hard to tell at such speed, a slight touch from the keeper can send the strikers flying.

Anyway…great performance from the whole team. Eboue, TV, Song, and you got to love Denilson waging his finger at that Brown guy after Wilshere’s tackle :)

On to the Mancs…Come on Arsenal

  351. “Just one question, did anyone see what Eboue had written on his sweat top under his shirt?
Hope it said something like, “feck you Le Grove and the rest.””

I hope he did…and if he didn’t…I say, F*ck you le grove and the rest.

  352. It said “Thanks be to God.”

  353. It’s high time for english media to hound Eduardo – England’s next match vs Croatia 9th September.

  354. Good point happychap.

Hope atleast one of Cesc, Diaby or Ramsey is fit to play against the mancs. I cant remember the last time we played them at full strength.

  355. If we can get Cesc back in to play against mancs, then we’ve got nothing to fear for. Bye the way, I read somewhere that Denilson was injured as well. Hope it’s not true.

  356. I Love Arsenal but i hate cheating. What Eduardo did was blatant cheating. Its no good saying other players do it.Eduardo is an Arsenal player and we dont cheat.Sort him out Arsene

  357. Arsene will sort him out in private and we all won’t know about it. Publicly Arsene will say what needs to be said and no more. We shouldn’t be too moralistic about it. This is football.

  358. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

Did you see the empty seats 5 min from time? Disgraceful.

And Eboue was class. He can be devastating in an open game. Still, I wouldn’t use him (as a mid) against the Mancs.

  359. We are arsenal fans why on earth are we joining the media hysteria? We beat them because we utterly outclassed them over both games. End of. Let everyone else whine about cheating – we don’t slag off our own.

  360. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

@ Steww, it’s not slagging off, it’s getting the facts right. We’re not a bunch of sycophant Nazis, we are The Arsenal.

  361. You don’t have to be either BG, to be a supporter you support, you are biased, you love your team you don’t jump on anti Arsenal bandwagons started by the media. Anyway i wasn’t aiming the comment at you.

  362. Bergkamp Ghoulfest

I know, just think its important that fans discourage their own players from cheating. You’re right though, there are some twats on telly.

  363. I agree Steww – look at what happened to Eboue, Wenger made the mistake of publicly admitted he dived in the CL final and said he would have a word with him. That gave license to Arsenal fans to slag him off and made things difficult for him. Arsene did the right thing, support your player in public and keep your other thoughts to yourself. A few Arsenal fans would do well to do the same. The media only choose to highlight such things when certain teams or players are involved and I don’t intend to join this particular bandwagon when it involves one of our players.

  364. Passenal, All Eboue had to do was stop diving, yet he carried on acting the fool every week. Arsenal fans should be applauded for not wanting that from there players.

  365. Hey Passenal – Eboue is repaying Arsene now though isn’t he? Another brilliant performance last night. Is there any position the guy cannot play? With the effort he puts in added to that of Denilson (and no little skill from both) we are well set this season.

  366. James,

When you say “Arsenal fans should be applauded..” are you not including yourself?

  367. James is no Arsenal fan – he keeps on outing himself, but some people still can’t see it.

Yes steww – he was brilliant last night both going forward and supporting Sagna in defence. In fact Celtic’s consolation goal came from the right where he would have been covering behind Bac.

  368. He was just everywhere, as you say backing up the right back Bac, popping up on the left, in the centre to score, tackling, breaking at breakneck speed, setting people up, having a pop whenever he got sight of goal.
Also a mention for Willie G who has won me over completely. Can anyone imagine someone like John Terry skinning a full back then going into the box and shooting like WG10 did last night? The man’s attitude compared with the one the media would have us believe is incredible. To be stripped of the captaincy and play with such heart is amazing.

  369. You are absolutely spot on about Gallas too. The man has been a revelation since losing the captaincy and is going from strength to strength with his new defensive partner.

  370. While I’m at it how about TV – yet another brilliant defensive signing. Oh – hang on though I just checked the “Commentator and Journalist’s Lazy Handbook of Useful Facts” and it clearly states
.. when discussing Arsene Wenger’s transfer dealings the following line should be used: Wenger has an eye for a forward but a blind spot where signing defenders is concerned.
    so I must be wrong.

  371. That was the warm up, Eduardo. Let’s have more of the same on Saturday.

  372. Eboue was man of the match.

  373. Supporters started leaving in significant numbers 13 minutes before the final whistle.

  374. Several Celtic players should have been booked or even sent off as a result of the penalty. Their reaction was appalling, one even grabbed Eduardo by the throat.

  375. Morning Frank. Denilson was MOTM – he always is. But EE ran him darn close.

  376. Nope, Eboue was MotM.

  377. TV was superb as was Alex Song and WG.

  378. Denilson played very well as always.

  379. In terms of class, Celtic are at least a division below Arsenal. Tony Mowbray is trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear. When the going got rough for Celtic and our passing game started to mesmerise them, they reverted to brutality. Culminating in the player Brown threatening JW. How brave.

  380. Good to see Den step up when he had a go though.

  381. Braveheart, my arse!

  382. With our CL qualification in the bag (for the 12th straight year), people who wish the club ill in the media will be crying into their bangers and mash this morning.

    I love it!

Eboue really stood out for me as well – and I had to squint to watch most of the match. It got better though. Sorry for the retarded comments.

  384. What retarded comments?

    It’s not worth it.

  386. Arsenal have gone back to basics with defending forming the platform for attack

    Everton v Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has masterminded Arsenal’s glorious start to the season, sweeping all before them with a goalfest and glorious attacking football.

But just watch out for Arsenal’s most important tactic at Manchester United on Saturday as it will have more to do with defending than attacking. If it works, of course!

Two years ago when Arsenal spent most of the season at the top of the table they played a pressing game.

Last season, they tried to out-pass opponents when they weren’t bickering with each other in the dressing room.

This season, Wenger has gone back to basics with a 4-3-3 formation designed to get his midfield trio scampering all over the pitch to shut opposing players down rather than out-pass them.

Alex Song and Denilson have been revelations as their hard work has allowed Cesc Fabregas to play after hours of tireless work on the training ground this summer.

So when United’s midfield tries to turn into space on Saturday, if Arsenal’s midfield is doing its job, then there will be three blue shirts trying to stop Michael Carrick.

Wenger gets much credit for his attacking play but this pre-season has all been about defending, which goes against the grain for the Frenchman.

  387. Great pic SRL

It looks like Arshavin fears the wrath of his Master, Denilson..
